i’m being slandered by an artist on here who i commissioned in feb, who dropped my commission over an innocuous comment (“i also wanted to say if you lose interest in this commission or don't want to draw it, that's totally okay too! hope you're doing well”) and is now blasting me on their blog — including really nasty tags on their post that try to paint me as an ableist (which is rough, given my own medical problems as a disabled person).
it’s really disheartening and i’m sad this is my first experience with this particular community, and i’m considering sharing our entire DM convo (minus their username, i do NOT want anyone messaging them) so anyone who comes from their blog can get my side. i think more than anything i’m just hurt that my genuine attempts at being understanding were so woefully and maliciously interpreted. and it’s in such a silly community too. what a bummer of a friday. i even overpaid on my commission (their post initially asked for $15, i paypal’d $25) and told them to keep the money, as it’d probably just end up causing more stress. but like, damn, i could’ve been using that for bills!

Status Update: Conflicting Thoughts
(Apologies for the lengthy status, but just thought I’d clarify and state things that are going on. I’m treating this like some kind of thought journal in a way.)
So whatever has been happening in our world for the past month has hit me so hard today that I had an anxiety attack at work and went home early. I really don’t know what to do anymore...I follow rules and protocols, only to end up getting myself in trouble in the end...
What Went Down:
So for as long as I can remember, I was told that we’re not allowed to give refunds (aka give money back) if an item’s sale price has been expired. It was a very chill day (The quietest day I’ve experienced since the past month) until an angry customer came in wanting her money back on a couple items that rang in at full price when she thought they were on sale. I told her that we’re not allowed to do that if the sale price is expired (Which it was), and that we even have signs everywhere stating that we’re not allowed. She argues and pries on, even twisting her words and confusing me with “I’m not bringing the items back, I just want my money back” and all that, when I didn’t even mention about her bringing her items back at all. So I call a manager on duty who comes down, only for her to say that she can get her money back. I questioned the manager if it was actually ok because I was told that we weren’t supposed to be doing this kind of stuff and what the signs everywhere were saying, which was my 1st mistake I made in this situation. Never question a manager’s decision. She says, “Because I’m a manager, I give the say on what’s allowed and not allowed. We have a ‘make it right’ or ‘override’ policy”. I complied and did what the manager told me. But because I was so confused and flustered from what went down, I made another mistake of giving the full refund to the customer when I should’ve just given the price difference refund. After all that, the manager comes up to me and gives me a lecture of the situation that went down. I apologized profusely, served the next customer no problem. But then something in me snapped to where I had to relieve myself and cry...A lot. What’s funny is that I’ve dealt with these kinds of situations before where customers still got refunds and all that after having talks with managers, and even me complying no problem and not questioning them. But today seemed to be different. I think what happened was that I got so overwhelmed and perplexed with the constant rule changes, and I’ve had so much negative emotions bottled up inside from what’s been happening for the past month that this situation set me off. It was the final straw to let loose all the stress out of me. Like a volcano effect. After crying for some time, I wanted to have a talk with the manager on duty to let her know what problems I’m facing, but she ended up being off duty for the day. So I have a talk with the other manager, telling him my problems that I’m facing. I even had a talk with my supervisor on duty, and both of these people said really great things that helped me to keep moving forward. And it encouraged me to not be shy to ask for help if I’m ever in a bind. The problem with me is that I would think I have everything under control and am too shy to ask for help, only to end up having problems in the end. This is one of the reasons I can be proud to work this kind of job. The people that work here are pretty awesome folk.
My Thoughts And Feelings:
But even after the nice talks, I have so many conflicting thoughts happening that I really don’t know what to do anymore and how to feel. I question whether I’m a really good person, or if what I’m doing in life is worth something or is the right thing. But at the same time, I take what some customers have been saying about how where I’m working is worth something during this epidemic situation. I have been thanked and praised a few times which puts a smile on my face. And I do get positive comments from people about when it comes to what I do and what my personality’s like. And not just customers and the employees either, it’s even my relatives and social media followers/friends. I try to aim towards the positives, only at times to be blocked or hit by the negatives. I just hope that whatever negative things come my way doesn’t stay and make me do something drastic. The other thing too is that I have atychiphobia (Fear of failure) so whenever I make a mistake (Even if it’s minor), I can make a huge deal of it to the point where I beat myself up and question my intelligence level. One thing I can admit about my intelligence level though is that I have poor common sense (One of the reasons I’m struggling to get certified to sell alcohol at this job). I’m aware that making mistakes is ok since it’s very common and is a way of learning, but I guess I’m just afraid that I’ll get in deep trouble if I fail. I’m not a fan of people getting mad or frustrated with me, especially when it comes to situations where I have no control over the actions that take place. Being a cashier for 10+ years has mentally deteriorated me to the point of just getting tired of everything. I’m tired of dealing with ignorance, stupidity, spoiled brats, highly esteemed individuals, constant rule changes, and an inconvenient or inconsistent shift scheduling system. I really can’t wait till my aesthetics business opens up again, and that it becomes successful enough for me to finally stop working as a cashier. I admit that I will miss the employees there and some of the usual customers that always put a smile on my face. Even the health benefits I’ll miss (The other reason why I still have this job, lol).

Opposites Attract (Henry Bowers x Reader)
request: the reader is really shy (like me) and she has a huge crush on Henry. Henry finds out one day that she has a crush on him, and he teases and flirts with her and does sexual things to her until he gets her to crack and admit her feelings for him. then Henry asks her to be his girlfriend.
a/n: thank you for the request @kaitlinp0rrini, and I hope you enjoy it! this is the cheesiest thing I’ve ever written
It all started when Clark Freeman, number 52 on the Derry High football team, got tripped by Henry Bowers in the first floor hallway in between class periods five and six. You’d been standing by your locker, organizing your papers for science class, when you saw it go down.
Clark was a complete asshole, not only to you, but to everybody around him, one of those popular jocks who thrived on thinking the world revolved around him. No one had ever challenged that idea before. Henry seemed to take it into his own hands to fulfill such a task single-handedly, while walking towards the cocky quarterback one fateful Monday afternoon.
You’d heard a rumor that the whole football team had a secret fear of the Bowers gang, a club of four delinquents that made games out of terrorizing their peers. You’d never thought much of them, until you turned around and saw a flash of a letterman jacket fly to the floor before you.
Clark gasped as he turned around to see the perpetrator of the crime - Henry Bowers in the flesh, turning around to look at his victim with a sneer.
You froze, anticipating to be in the VIP section of the fight of the century, but saw nothing of the sort transpire.
Clark scrambled to his feet, keeping his eyes on Henry, giving a death glare that was undermined by his body language.
“You wanna fuckin’ go, Bowers?” He asked, though it seemed he didn’t want to know the answer, as he scurried away without another look behind him.
You couldn’t help but start to laugh. It wasn’t something you did often - you were extremely shy, and hated drawing too much attention to yourself. However, it was just too funny. You fucking hated a majority of the football team, it was chock-full of assholes like Clark. Finally, you saw one of them get a taste of their own medicine.
The other witnesses around you looked just as shocked, just as amused, but you were the only one to outright laugh, granting you the momentarily undivided attention of Henry himself.
His eyes locked with yours, and before you could nervously look away, he spoke.
“Somethin’ funny, sweetheart?” Henry questioned with the ghost of a smile. Your eyes widened as his scanned over you, making eye contact once again before stalking off.
That’s all it took for you to develop a crush on the most dangerous boy in school.
Patrick Hockstetter loved people watching.
People watching at Derry High was like studying an ant farm. Students and teachers scattered mindlessly wherever they needed to go, and interacted with each other for arbitrary reasons, and all looked so normal until you picked just one to study and tried to figure out its motives.
Of course, it was never very hard to do, but it was a way to pass the time far better than paying attention to the teacher.
One day in science class, Patrick picked you as a specimen.
Quiet people were usually the most interesting to watch, and were always the best fucks - you were even one of the more attractive girls in that class - but the potential of developing even remote interest in you hinged on whether or not you were entertaining to observe.
You were very entertaining, much more than he anticipated, but not because of your unconscious mannerisms - you’d kept your eyes on Henry for a majority of the class period.
Henry attracted many girls, but Patrick noticed that they were a particular type of girl. The loud, raucous ones, or the dangerous, wild ones made up his fan club. Very rarely would the quiet librarian type develop feelings for him, or at least make it as obvious as you made it, without using words.
Only at the end of class did you turn and notice Patrick staring at you one row over. Face reddening, you looked down as the bell rang, folding your textbook into your arms and walking out of the classroom in a rush.
Henry approached Patrick, hands in his pockets.
“We goin’ downtown today?” He asked, apparently completely oblivious of how you’d stared at him all period. Patrick smiled slyly.
“Sure thing, Henry.”
Patrick intended on telling about you later that night, but that evening he’d completely forgot by the time the Bowers gang was huddled around a table at Barry’s Burgers, and it had completely slipped his mind.
“You guys should’ve fucking seen it.” Henry laughed, taking a bite of his burger. “He fell like a ton of fucking bricks, and ran the fuck away like the pussy he is. It was hilarious.”
The guys laughed with him.
“I would’ve fucking paid to see that. Did any teachers catch you? They basically worship the football team.” Vic sarcastically questioned.
Henry shook his head. “Not this time. Thank fuck. I’ve had enough bad shit with teachers.”
“You had an audience though, right?”
A nod. “Yeah, everyone looked fucking thankful I did it. This girl from my chem class burst out laughing when I did it, like, loud, and she’s one of those quiet girls. He must’ve fucked her over or something.”
Patrick immediately perked up.
“What?”
Henry blinked, taking another bite before his reply and talking as he chewed. “Everyone was happy I tripped that little bitch. You guys should’ve been there. It was like, two months ago.”
“You said a girl was there?”
Henry smiled when he thought of you. He swallowed.
“Yeah, I think her name is Y/N? She’s in our science class. She was there when I tripped him, and she laughed out loud about it. He must’ve fucked her over or something. Or she just hates him like everyone else. Surprised more people didn’t laugh. He’s such a dick.”
Patrick smiled.
“That’s interesting.”
Henry scoffed. “What, have you met Clark? Cuz-”
“Do you like that girl?”
Henry had thought you were hot since the beginning of the year, but had a feeling you were one of those out-of-reach girls, either with a boyfriend, or with standards too high for the head of the Bowers gang, much less any of the other members. Henry rarely attracted shy girls, and he was positive that he’d never heard a single peep out of you before the day he tripped Clark.
“She’s a babe.” Henry said, furrowing his brow at Patrick. “Why?”
Patrick had gained the attention of Vic and Belch, and the whole table stared at him.
“That girl’s totally in love with you. She spent the whole fucking period today staring at you.”
Henry blinked, perplexed, trying to imagine you doing such a thing without him noticing.
“How the fuck would you know?” He asked, nearly insulted.
“I had nothing to fuckin’ do, and I looked around the room and I saw she was fucking staring at you, like, the whole period. Like a freak.”
“Don’t fucking insult her man, you’re a freak.”
“Fuck you.“
Henry had already known about Patrick’s tendency to people-watch. Maybe he was telling the truth. There was no reason for him to lie anyway, and Henry had caught you looking at him a few times.
As Vic and Belch picked up a conversation, the gears in Henry’s head began to turn, and he smiled, turning to his best friend.
“Well, thanks, Pat. I think I’ll put it to the test.”
Patrick rolled his eyes. “You really don’t fuckin’ trust me?”
“I do. I just wanna see how right you are.”
It was perfect, it really was - on most days, you’d sit with desks about two feet apart. On testing days, they’d be even farther apart, sometimes positioned in random opposing directions - but due to an upcoming project, Mrs. Baxter was sure to separate people into partners for the week ahead. Fifteen minutes before the end of class that Friday, Mrs. Baxter began her weekly process.
The two of you had never been paired before. Henry knew full well it was time to strike.
“I think I’ll pair you with Roger this week, Calvin… and Y/N…” the teacher glanced around the room, until she spotted Henry with raised eyebrows, as well as a raised hand.
“Yes, Henry?”
“I’ll be her partner.” He volunteered.
Your heart nearly did a backflip. What was he doing?
Though it caught you off guard, you weren’t about to turn down such an offer.
You swallowed and nodded at a crossed-brow Mrs. Baxter.
“Yeah. We’ve never been partnered up before.” You added. Henry shot a smug glance at you from the back of the room.
“Alright.” She said, moving onto the next student.
It was the protocol to go to your partner and talk about the study guide, start going over the first page if you had the time. As you turned to look at the boy you’d been partnered with, it seemed that he wasn’t going anywhere. You’d have to go to him.
You stood up, your textbook and your notebook wrapped in your arms, nervously walking towards his seat in the last row. You passed Patrick Hockstetter, who wore quite an ominous smirk, staring at you intently. Shifting your gaze to the floor, you continued, looking up only once more to see Henry.
His stare sent waves of butterflies through your stomach, blue eyes bearing the same sly grin that his lips did. He probably loved how nervous you were.
The end of class was near. You could do this.
For a minute, neither of you spoke. Mrs. Baxter reminded everyone of the test date, the material being tested on, and asked everyone to become familiar with their partner and inquire about study sessions outside of class, if possible. No one ever met up for science studies.
Finally, it was silent, and she momentarily left the room, everyone breaking into conversation.
Another moment passed, your mind racing for something to say, wondering if you should say anything at all. That’s when he spoke.
“My friend Patrick said you stare at me a lot in class.”
It felt like your ribs caught fire. You stared down at your paper, embarrassment washing over you. Thanks for that, Patrick.
You swallowed before speaking, organizing your messy thoughts, flipping open your notebook to distract yourself.
You could feel him staring at you merely inches away.
“W-Well, I don’t. He must’ve gotten me mixed up with someone else.”
Henry leaned back in his seat. “You can admit it, babe, a lot of girls are obsessed with me.”
Immediately, you scoffed, underlining sentences of your notes randomly. You refused to look at him.
“I’m not obsessed with you.” You quietly remarked.
“Then why do you stare at me in class?”
You shrugged. “Patrick lied to you.”
“Why would he lie about that?”
You finally turned to him, and your anger was offset by his jovial, entertained expression.
“Patrick is crazy.” You said, as-a-matter-of-factly.
Henry cocked an eyebrow, looking at his nails.
“I dunno, Y/N. Crazy people stare at other people in class. I’ve never caught Patrick staring at me.”
You let out a sarcastic laugh. “He was staring at me the other day!”
Henry smirked. “Sounds like a match made in heaven. Two crazy people.”
The boy looked at your lips, making you nervous all over again. You turned back to your notes and flipped open the study guide.
“You don’t talk too much, do you?” He teased in a low voice. His voice turned you on.
You hesitated a moment before replying. “You never talk in this class, either.”
“Well, I fucking hate science. Is that your excuse, too?”
The fact that the guy you’d developed a crush on months ago was finally flirting with you now was a high you’d ride out until it died.
“Yeah, science sucks. But… I mean, my friends all say I’m shy. So I guess I really am just shy.”
After a moment of hesitation, you suddenly felt his hand on your knee.
Goosebumps spread over your skin, from your legs up to your back. Henry smiled at you, tracing his nails over your kneecap.
“You’re not being too shy with me, today.” He said.
Your cheeks must’ve been bright red, your heart beating a million miles per hour.
“Neither are you.” You nervously joked.
Mrs. Baxter had left the room. None of the kids facing forward remotely seemed to notice Henry’s advances. At least you didn’t have an audience.
His fingertips gently trailed up your thigh, going further up and further inside. He tightly grasped your leg, making you gasp.
You put your elbow on the table and rested your face against your hand, covering your face from his view.
“I can’t help myself. You’re so fucking hot.”
The compliment made your heart flutter, but also put a bad taste in your mouth. He was probably one of the boys you’d been warned about by your parents and the TV shows - saying anything to butter you up and get in your pants.
Please let the bell ring, you mentally pleaded with the clock on the wall, edging closer to the end of class, his fingers edging the hem of your skirt.
Though part of you absolutely loved the attention, the pursuit from the guy you’d wanted it from most, you were so nervous, so unsure of what to do. Mrs. Baxter reentered the room, and seemed completely oblivious, sitting down at her desk. She was probably used to ignoring Henry.
“Why are you doing this?” You asked, in a nervous yet enthused, moving your arm back down to rest on the table. You didn’t have to look at him to know that he was smiling.
“Cuz I know you like me.”
You rolled your eyes, still turned away from him. “I told you Patrick was lying.”
“Even if he was, I know you still like me.”
You finally turned to look at him.
“How?” You sarcastically questioned. He answered you very simply.
“Because opposites attract, sweetheart.”
Your nerves were at an all time high as he gently moved his hand in between your thighs, ever so slowly, the eye contact single-handedly killing you - right as the bell rang.
“The study guide is due Monday!” Mrs. Baxter said, almost pleading, as the room broke into loud conversation and laughter. In the midst of it all, you quickly stood up, grabbing your books and walking away with them in a rush. Your only goal was to get out of the school as fast as possible, leaving Henry in the dust.
You felt scared, so exhilarated, and you knew there was no real reason for it - but he was too bold, too terrifying, to have anything to do with you.
You threw your books into your backpack and speed-walked out the door, melting into the throng of students moving through the hallway. Within minutes of urgently flowing through the crowd, you made it out the front doors, and finally you felt the first waves of calm. That was, until someone gripped your shoulder.
“Y/N!” Henry Bowers groaned, in an exasperated tone. You nearly jumped, turning around with wide eyes to see him. He was breathing heavily.
“I’m sorry.” He said.
You didn’t expect him to follow you. For a moment, you just stared at him.
“For what?” You asked.
“I think I scared you off.”
You took in a slow breath, unsure of how to phrase your concern.
“I like you, Henry. I just think we’re too different.”
Other students passed by, but the two of you barely noticed, completely focused on the other.
“Sure, we’re pretty different, but it’d be boring if we were the same.”
You looked up at him, blinking in the sunlight. He stepped closer.
“I like you. A lot. And if Patrick wasn’t lying about you starin’ at me, I wanna take a chance on that.”
He smiled, putting his hands into his pockets. You were surprised how he seemed so… Nervous.
“Do you…” He picked up his gaze from the ground and looked at you. “Do you wanna go out?”
You narrowed your eyes at him, hiding all signs of mental explosion that you experienced.
“You mean, hang out after school to study for our test?” You coyly questioned, cocking an eyebrow, unable to hide your growing grin.
“Do you wanna be my girlfriend?” He finally asked, smiling back at you.
He was bold, he was terrifying, but you couldn’t say you didn’t like those things about him. It was true - you had no idea how well you'd do on the test - but you knew for sure in that moment, he’d proven to you that opposites attract.
Holding eye contact, the two of you beamed at each other.
“Of course.” You quietly replied.

AskReddit - Cruise Ship employee stories
Tumblr media
“If I can fart in the passenger cabins, I do”
----------
“I worked a single 5-month contract as a musician about 10 years ago. I’m sure every company is different but here’s a few things that might be of interest:
There were a handful of crew-only stairwells that were designated smoking spots. They were peppered across the ship and almost constantly occupied by a handful of staff. The butt disposal method was a nasty ass bucket of water that some poor soul from housekeeping probably had to empty periodically.
Speaking of cigarettes, they were ridiculously cheap for us: duty free, and without the markup the passengers would buy them at. It was $2 a pack when I was working, regardless of brand. Alcohol was similarly inexpensive.
Different employees get vastly different treatment and privileges; that’s not that crazy sounding, but because everyone also lives on the ship, it gets a little weird. You have officers, staff, and crew. Crew are the lowest level employees; they sleep four to a room, and can only eat in the crew mess (which had the lowest quality food, but also really good Indian and Filipino food sometimes). Waiters, cooks, housekeepers, stage hands, and the people actually making the ship operate are all crew. Staff would sleep two to a room, and got their own nicer mess hall (although we could also eat in the crew mess). Musicians, dancers, photographers, spa workers, and some managers were staff. Officers got their own restaurant-style mess that others could only eat at by invitation, and all got their own studio apartment-style cabins. Management were all officers, as well as the literal ship’s officers, like the captain.”
----------
“Very common occurrence actually (especially considering the average age of people who go on cruses) there is a morgue on board every ship and they can actually get quite full during long voyages”
In reply to above ^ “Can confirm, we’ve had 10-15 people die on our ship. Due to the large amount of elderly folks that travel on cruise ships it's fairly common to have people die on board (natural causes, heart attacks, etc). As a result, just about every cruise ship has some sort of morgue that acts as a temporary hold for the deceased.”
----------
“I did this (being a cruise ship employee) for almost 5 years ending about 4 years ago. Here are the cliff notes.
Yes alot of people are hooking up. People that are married with kids at home are gay or have a wife/husband they married in another country on board. One of my contracts there was a outbreak of chlmydia. My now wife and I knew we were faithful because of neither of us caught it. Also it's common for a person to sign off and the SO be sleeping with someone else that night (or trying to at least)
yes people die. Yes some are due to old age but trageties do happen as well such as people going overboard. During my time on ships the non "old age type" deaths were two suicides and one twenty something year old who went overboard that we never found. Back to the old age deaths. We would bet on the really long cruises (due to average client age) how many emergency doctor calls over the PA system there would be.
yes there are cruise ship accidents. Another cruise liner hit our ship while docking in Puerto Vallarta Mexico. Same ship the following weekend with a new captain slammed into the pier shattering the pier. Side note this same ship was one stranded at sea a few years ago due to engine fires.
there are morgues and there are jails. The joke is that when the morgue fills up they start giving ice cream out to the crew. Unfortunately I've seen the jails used for people other than fighting or unruly drunks.
rescued refugees in the carribbean and the Mediterranean several times. It puts the world into perspective at times.
contracts depend on your position but can vary from 10 weeks to 9 months.
it's a melting pot of cultures living in a tiny bubble.
you see cool places, you don't sleep slot but you sure drink a lot. Yes the crew parties can be wild.”
----------
“As a Former Cruise ship employee of A ships entertainment division, these are my tidbits
-A lot of employees have “ship wives/husbands” even those with marriages on land. My manager had a ship wife who he shared a cabin with while he saw his wife and 4 kids every two weeks.
-Cruise ships are actually crazy clean. There’s different levels of cleanliness based on the amount of total sick guests on board. I’ve been pulled off shifts before to help sanitise the theatre under extreme conditions.
Sleeping or even going into guest cabins (that you’re not registered with) is a fireable offense. Security literally watches your every move if you’re allowed in guest areas
Ships, at least mine, do what ever they want in international waters. Example: They incinerate literally anything including batteries, theatrical moving lights, a literal pallet of brochures due to ONE typo. Waste, human or otherwise is sent into the ocean so long as it’s “organic”, sometimes treated.
As technical sailors, we all have emergency roles. We were learning the protocols behind suspicions package discovery one morning and all was well... until I learned what crew did in this case. We literally search for this package that more than likely would be a bomb. In my work area, this involves walking each row of a 1500 seat theatre and hoping not to step on this object and blow up.
In Emergencey situations, most guests get life boats, crew gets life rafts. Life rafts hold ~16, boats ~120 with mandatory sea sickness pills administered upon boarding. They don’t always work in high seas and the thing is, you’re literally sitting in other passengers butts and crotches the way you’re crammed s in there. If I’m ever a passenger, I’d opt for the raft.Large scale sympathetic puking is not my thing.”
----------
“The crew have their own bar. They are technically never allowed to have a BAC over 0.02, even off duty, so getting drunk can get you fired and kicked off the ship in whatever port you're in.
Guest areas and crew areas can be differentiated in that passenger areas have carpeting.
Every crew member has a safety role in case of emergency.
Shit is ridiculously clean, but there can still be a "Code Brown" where a virus breaks out.
Getting caught fucking a passenger (or even being in a passenger area without a good reason) will likely get you fired.
It's possible your crew member works triple shifts 6-7 days a week.”
----------
“ I've been working on ships for about 3 years. For the most part it's operationally not a whole lot different from a large hotel, except that it floats from country to country and the staff never leave for months at a time. A few notable things;
We drink the same drinks as you for a lot cheaper, and we drink a lot of them.
We are notified of who high profile guests as well as problem passengers each cruise so that we know who to keep and eye out for most.
If you ever hear ambiguous coded messages over the PA system, it means something has gone wrong and somebody below decks is scrambling to fix it. One interesting thing I've found is that British cruise lines don't use coded announcements, they will just announce a medical or fire emergency plainly. I'm on an American line now and people always seem perplexed when I tell them there are lines that do that.
There's usually a "black market" of crew selling or trading their department's services. Room stewards will clean your cabin once a week before inspection day, photographers will trade photo prints for a haircut in the spa, stuff like that.”
----------
“I worked on a cruise ship for a few months in the engine room and have sailed on other commercial ships as well. If you have any specific questions then please feel free to ask and I'll see what I can recall.
I worked in the engine room so I don't have any juicy passenger interactions of my own. If you think that you don't have much space in your room then you should see the crew's quarters. The crew is packed in like corn on a cob. Take that single person room you have, double the size, but now 6 people are sleeping and living in there. Sanitation is a big issue and as a result the crew's rooms are regularly inspected.
The crew has so much sex. There was a place in the main crew area with free (shitty) condoms but the STD rate is still through the roof. Well over 50%. It honestly amazes me how much sex everyone has when everyone is also sharing rooms. But most employees will be on the ship 8 months out of the year and all that pent up tension will get released one way or another.
I'd advise not eating the sushi.
You would be amazed at what people will flush down the toilet. Pool noodles, t-shirts, shoes...pretty much anything that people don't want to pack with them when they leave. Cruise ships primarily use vacuum flush systems. These are very efficient but very sensitive. A tampon or condom can take out the toilets for everyone above and below your room. Then somebody from the engine department has to start braking open black water pipes or ripping open pumps to find where your blood stained cotton has managed to stop a whole lot more fluid flow. Toilet paper only in the toilets.
When the ship pulls in to port they usually hook up a water hose to fill up on potable water from the municipal supply. Once the ship is underway (and away from the nasty port waters) they then take water from the sea and distill it to keep the capacity up until they reach the next port. It's probably a lot cleaner than the water you have at home.
The ship also needs to fuel up (bunkering) and sometimes passengers are on board while that is going on. No open flames are allowed outside while bunkering is ongoing and this becomes a problem with passengers who need a smoke. To get around this they smoke in their rooms which sets off the smoke detectors. There is also a regulation that bunkering must immediately stop if a fire alarm goes off until the hazard of a fire has passed. So somebody from the crew has to go to your room and make sure it isn't on fire. Then they call down to the engine room to report it's a false alarm. Then we can start the pumps again. On average, bunkering is usually interrupted 3 or 4 times due to this and it's annoying as hell.
EDIT: A few more things. At least the ship I was on would have crew parties and events that made things a lot of fun. It really sucks for the people who have to work the customer parties because you know all your crew friends are having a blast.
Excessive fraternization or sex with passengers is against the rules. Simply entering a passenger's room without a reason is a firing offense.
Speaking of firing, it was not in our contract for the company to pay for your return flight if you get fired in an area where you are a citizen. So let's say you were hired on the U.S. West Coast by some big cruise company and you get a ship on the East Coast (some people want to change it up a bit if they get tired of the same route). If you get fired on your ship them the return trip is on you. I can't really give too much info without saying exactly which ship/company I was with but those return flights could cost $600 to $900. The local McDonald's had some ex-cruise ship workers saving up money to get home.
One more edit: Cruise ships are trying to become more environmentally friendly. There are whale zones where they go slower to give whales more time to get out of the way. We install scrubbers in the exhaust stack to help remove excess sulfur and carbon. Companies are now also working on reducing NOx emissions through advanced engine timing technology and stack gas treatment. Instead of using harmful chemicals to clean sewage waste we are now using UV and biological systems to break it down. Lube oils around the shaft are being replaced with biodegradable versions. Pretty soon ballast water will even begin to get treated. These are all new and upcoming improvements to try to reduce the environmental impact these ships have. But they are also 1,000 foot long floating cities which must provide food prep and storage, heating, A/C, lighting, water and sewage, recreational areas, and power for thousands of people while also moving them around on a floating piece of steel. There will be an environmental impact no matter what.

“I used to do wet and dry dock maintenance. Used to find quite a lot of drugs left behind. Passengers thought they found a clever hiding space in the cabin but we would take every inspection hatch off every cabin’s bathroom. There used to be a customs guy in Miami we called Dirty Harry, we just handed it to him. Cool guy. No: we did not use it ourselves.”
----------
“Former steward here. Finish your fucking food quick so I can go on break. If you're lounging at your table while were clearing other tables, we all hate you.
Also, housekeeping is all about time. When you have 2 hour to clean 5-6 rooms, short cuts happen.”
----------
“One thing is for sure, passengers ask the dumbest questions. We hated walking in guest areas because we would get asked dumb questions. Passengers were SHOCKED that we lived on board, once I was so annoyed one day I responded that I was a mermaid and actually jumped back in the ocean after my shift. The strange part is the person that asked apparently believed me. Another common question is "excuse me, do these stairs go up?" -- umm duh. They also go down. I think people turn their thinking caps off when on vacation. Which I guess is normal? My all time favorite question is, as soon as they step foot on the cruise: WHERE DA FOOD AT?? Ha! Never got old! Oh the memories.”
----------
“I worked on cruise ships as an engineer for 3 years and it was some of the best fun I've had in my life
I worked 10 hours per day every day for 4 months but the social life was enough to keep you going. My first trip was largely uneventful however as I spent my time focussed on work as I wanted to make a good impression but in my last month of that contract I met a cool Italian guy who was an absolute player and he took me under his wing.
I was/am an officer and this brought the benefits of a large cabin with double bed and windows (windows are rare for crew as they mostly have internal cabins) I realise I could use this to my advantage and went from the shy 20 year old to an absolute whore. I'm not bad looking either so that helped me a bit.
The travelling was fantastic and I travelled the world. My favourite part being the very north of Norway where in the summer the sun didn't set and there was sunlight all day long.
Alcohol (including spirits with my company) was very cheap and you would often find your self buying drinks for an entire room of people for very little cost.
I could, as an officer, order room service and there were even some crew cooking in there cabins and selling it to other hungry crew members.
All in all it's a hard lifestyle to maintain and sleep is limited if you're social and want to go ashore at the same time but in my opinion, totally worth it.”
----------
“I worked on a major cruise line out of a port in Florida.
Crew bar has cheap drinks, but you're technically never supposed to be drunk. You can find most crew there usually always smoking cigarettes, drinking beers and getting a little too drunk. (Not much else to do when the ship is at sea). Most crew members have families back home and a lot have girlfriends on board as well. That is just apart of ship life.
Crew members are super hard working and work weeks are 70 hours a week without a single day off for 6-8 months at a time. Most crew members rely on tips for their wages. My position was salaried for $58/a day, I was an officer on board working in the guest services office. Came out to roughly $1400 a month after taxes. No one else is taxed besides Americans on board.
The best way to describe no days off is, waking up to your alarm and every single day feels like a Monday morning (for those that actually have normal work weeks).
My position shared a bedroom with bunk beds and really small bathrooms. You could shit, shave your legs, and brush your teeth all at the same time. Depending upon your position on board determined if you had guest area privileges. I was allowed in guest areas, but after spending all day with the guests that's the last thing I wanted to do. You're always on duty and your supervisors have 24 hour access to you at all times by just ringing your phone and waking you up in your cabin. Sleep was very limited, so every off hour was spent trying to catch up.
Wifi was $5 a day for 24 hour access to limited social media apps or $10 for 100 minutes unrestricted. I spent way too much money on the shitty wifi.
Overall the people you live and work with is what makes your experience on board. Some days are worse than others but you somehow manage to get through it.”
