Worth the Thought

The dull, thudding dread in your stomach had started around half past three when your phone started buzzing - the monthly reminder from the cycle tracker app that your period should be starting any minute.

It hadn’t. Yet.

You swiped ignore on the notification and flipped the phone over on your desk, hoping that if you just concentrated on the spreadsheet in front of you, you’d be able to ignore the creeping anxiety about the fact that Auntie Flo usually arrived on time like clockwork. Maybe it was just a day or two late.

But you couldn’t shake off the thought that maybe it wasn’t. And the computer screen was getting blurrier and blurrier by the minute and the sound of the clock on the wall opposite your chair was ticking louder and louder. Your fingers felt like lead everytime you added a new sum to the column you were currently adding up.

After about thirty minutes of a half hearted attempt of continuing the work day, you clicked the log out button on the desktop screen.

“Hey, Claire?”, you asked, peering over the divider at your coworker.

“Yeah??” She didn’t look up from her computer screen.

“I’m not feeling too well all the sudden. Gonna head out a bit early, I think.”

She stopped typing and met your gaze - “Oh, I’m sorry to hear that. Go ahead, doll. We’ll sort out these figures tomorrow.”

You nodded your head in appreciation and gathered your things, cramming them into the oversized striped tote that George had given you a few Christmases ago. He reasoned that you loved stripes so it made sense that you should have something striped to carry around everyday - he seemed to always be insufferably cute in his logic of gift giving.

The phone was the last thing you picked up - a new message notification from George seemed to be screaming out from the bright screen.

So glad that you’ll be there tonight.

“Shit.” You muttered it under your breath and hitched the bag on your shoulder.

Geebs, I’m not feeling too well. Not sure if I can make it.

It had taken him a while to gather the courage to ask you to accompany him to what he called “work functions”. You weren’t promoting anything, he had explained, so you didn’t need to be subjected to the endless barrage of flashbulbs and oddly boring questions from journalists. He would understand if you wanted to stay at home and keep everything private. But you didn’t mind. George always came to every office party or dinner, even the annual Christmas do that Claire tended to get too drunk at and cry to him about her apparently never ending singledom. Besides, you loved the way George swelled up with pride when he spoke about his experience working on a film - how much he loved creating something new.

What’s up?

Nothing serious. Just don’t feel too hot. Heading home early rn.

I can ring Donna and see if I can get out of this thing.

Don’t. Isn’t it a BAFTA party?

Yea. That doesn’t matter tho. Been to enough at this point, tbh.

You sure, Piglet?

You couldn’t help but give a small smile at his nickname for you. George claimed that when you got anxious, your voice got higher and you couldn’t stop saying “oh no” just like the Winnie the Pooh character. Also, there was his claim that when you laughed hard enough, you’d make soft snorting sounds instead of laughs. It was one of the cutest things about you, according to George. At least it was better than the nickname he ended up with. Allegedly - according to what you could remember - it started after one night where you had drank too much white wine for your own good and couldn’t find George inside the bar. You’d found him outside in the smoking section, chatting with a burly lighting grip in a Man City beanie. Desperate to leave, you pawed at George’s shoulder, whining - “Geeeebs, I wanna gooo home now. Geeebs, lessssgo. Hooome. Goo.” Man City had smirked and nodded at your swaying frame. “Geebs, looks like your girl needs a bit of help.”

Yeah. I’m honestly just tired and wanna rest. Go! Have fun! Tell me all about it when you’re back!

Ok. Ok. Ok. Party is at Groucho’s. Want me to pick up some ramen from that place in Soho that you like?

Nah. Thank you tho :)

What about Boots? Need me to grab anything?

By the time you’d heard the front door lock click open, the dread from earlier had turned into a tight panic that had threaded itself tightly into your chest. If you just focussed on tidying up the flat, you wouldn’t have to think about what all the tests said. There weren’t thin pink lines in the suds of the washing up.

“Hi, darling.” His voice sounded soft - as if he spoke any louder, he might cause your mysterious ailment to get worse.

You didn’t turn around from the kitchen sink. Instead you squirted more Fairy liquid on an already saturated sponge.

“Hi. How was the party?”

“Just alright. Usual crowd. Usual questions. Managed to see Sam for a bit. He says hello, by the way. I convinced Donna to let me ditch early though.”

You squinted, the mug in your hand slippery from the soap. “Really? You should have stayed!”

George shrugged his coat off his shoulders, laying it over the back of the couch. He walked towards the kitchen, holding a brown paper bag.

“I couldn’t possibly leave my poorly little piglet home alone any longer.”

Out of the corner of your eye, you could see him place the bag on the island counter. Tonkostu. That ramen place in Soho you liked. He was making it even harder to tell him what you needed to say.

“Besides, we’ve both been busy and you know, I just wanted to be home instead of trying to come up with some clever line for who knows what”, he continued, unbuttoning his suit jacket.

There wasn’t any way the mug in your hand could get cleaner. You sighed, placing it on the drying rack and turned to face George. He smiled as he met your eyes.

“How are you feeling?”

“I’m still just fine. Knackered.”

“You’re being awfully vague about what’s going on. Did something happen at work?”

Biting the inside of your lip, you turned back to the sink. It would be easier to have this conversation without having to actually look at him. George in a suit was a particular weakness of yours and he’d been loaned a new double breasted one for the BAFTA party. Your mind was already all over the place.

“Well…”

“Well….” He replied as he pulled a water glass out of the cupboard next to you, nudging you a bit to let him get to the faucet to fill it up. You relented and turned off the water after he was done.

“Maybe you should look over there.” You said, gesturing towards the brown bag.

“You had a takeaway issue?” He laughed, leaning against the counter edge as he took a sip.

You sighed and adjusted the messy bun on top of your head. “No. The other thing on the counter.”

As he walked the short distance to see what was there, it felt like your heart was going to drop out of your chest. You hadn’t planned to have this conversation. At least not tonight.

“Wait. Are these what I think they are?” His brow had furrowed as he picked up the group of white plastic sticks.

You didn’t answer.

“Pigs? Are...you...you know?” His voice seemed to be getting a little higher. A little faster. He set the test back down, unbuttoning his sleeves and rolling them up.

“Am I what?”

George turned to you, his blue eyes wide with surprise - “Pregnant!”

The silence in the two seconds that it took you to answer was suffocating, weighing itself down on your shoulders.

“Apparently so”, you flatly responded.

“Fucking hell.”

“You can say that again.”

The joy in his voice made the nervousness you felt sting more - “You’re gonna have a baby. We’re gonna have a baby!”

He took two wide steps towards you, his arms reaching for your waist. You sidestepped away from his embrace. You’d wanted to hear George say this, watch him slowly realise what was happening as he read the test for so long. Longer than you could remember. But for some reason, this felt all wrong. This wasn’t supposed to happen just yet. There were so many things you wanted to do before this. Career advancements to be made, trips to be had, awards to be won, plans to dream up.

“Hold on. Let’s talk about this for a minute.”

“What’s there to talk about this? This is..I think...probably...no.. the best thing that’s ever happened.”

Exasperated, you grabbed the dish towel and twisted it around your hand. “I think we should really think about this. I mean. It’s a big step and we only just started thinking about getting married.”

“We’ve been together for five years. We’re still going to get married but it looks like we might be changing up the timeline of life events, though. I thought you were on the pill...”

“I was. I am. But I forgot my birth control that weekend last month

He had leaned back over to the island and picked up one of the pregnancy tests, examining it more closely.

“Mmm..”

It would be easier if you didn’t say it straight to his face. You turned back towards the window over the sink, the red lights of the London skyline blinking silently back at you.

“Maybe I don’t want to have this baby yet.”

There was a hitch in his voice - you didn’t need to see him to know that his face had fallen.

“What do you mean you don’t want to have this baby?”

“I’m not ready. At least I feel like I’m not ready.” The words felt like bombs dropping.

“You’re not bloody ready? Are you mental? You’re going to be the most amazing mother to walk this earth.” He ran his hand through his hair, his face tightened in confusion.

“I mean. I dunno. I just hadn’t really felt like I was at the point where I could take care of another life.”

George moved closer to you, ignoring the sound of you turning the sink faucet. “You’re so ready.”

“Oh”, you responded dryly, “Did you have a conversation with my mind to get that information?”

“Ok. No. You’re right. I didn’t. But I know you. And I love you. And I know that you’re gonna be fine. You’re gonna be grand.”

Picking up a sauce pot, you resumed the washing up. You were stuck in now, but maybe the Fairy liquid could smooth over how awful this talk was going to get, you thought.

“You’re not getting it. I don’t want this. Not yet.”

George gingerly laid his hand on your shoulder. “Wait. What are you trying to say?” His voice faltered.

“I don’t know! I don’t know what I want!”

“I thought you wanted children...”

“I do! Just..not right now.” Your throat felt like it was clamping up as your voice rose. “We haven’t planned for this shit at all.”

“Well. Yeah. We'll sort it out though.”

You slammed the saucepot down in the sink. “No. You’re not listening. How are we going to fit a literal child into our lives? We live in a tiny fucking one bedroom flat. You’re about to leave to go to Australia for 3 months. Do we even have enough money to have a kid?”

He pulled his bottom lip between his teeth and looked away. “I’ll drop the damn film. You know we’re financially sound.”

You wished that you’d turned on more lights when you got home. The half lit kitchen wasn’t helping the dark mood at all.

“Ok. Well maybe this isn’t a we situation then. There are things besides those. I have a promotion at work I want. A career. I want to move up the ladder. I know as an actor you can get that. It’s like getting bloody famous or something.”

He rolled his eyes. “Alright. Let’s not get petty.”

The sink groaned a sharp metallic click as the water suddenly stopped.

“This fucking stupid sink! George. You were supposed to fix it!”

He nudged you out of the way and quickly shut the faucet off.

“Pigs. Let’s not get into the sink right now.”

You threw the towel onto the counter, staring at the strawberry print. “Ok fine then. Maybe I don’t want to be like your mum and give everything up to raise this child.”

George snapped his head towards you, his voice low and harsh. He only spoke like that when he was truly angry.

“Don’t you dare bring my mother into this.”

“Why? You know she gave up her costumes for you and your sister. And now she’s a fucking nursery teacher.”

“She had a choice. You have a choice.” The sound of his hand hitting the counter reverberated around the two of you.

“Well. Maybe my choice is that I’m not going to keep it.”

“That’s not your choice!”

Shocked and open mouthed, you grabbed one of the tests. The plastic felt like it could cut into your palm, you were gripping it so tightly.

“Are you.. Are you fucking seriously fucking telling me I don’t have a choice?” You waved your closed fist in front of him, his eyes following the white stick. “I cannot believe...you arsehole.”

He held his hands up in surrender. You didn’t stop.

“You of all fucking people would tell me that what I want to do with my goddamn body isn’t my choice.”

“That’s not what I meant….”

“What did you mean then? That you had the final say in what happened to your child in my body, huh?”

“No.” He grabbed your wrist to stop you from waving the test at him.

“Let go of my fucking arm.”

“You need to calm down. That’s not what I meant”

You jerked your arm free and threw the stick at his feet. “Don’t fucking tell me to calm down. I’m going upstairs. I swear to god, if you follow me.”

Even forty five minutes in the bath felt like it wasn’t enough to make you feel better. You loved the clawfoot bathtub - it might have been your favourite thing in the cramped apartment you and George shared.

The doorknob turned and you slid back under the water, scrunching your eyes and letting your nose stay slightly above waterline; hoping that if you stayed like that long enough, he would eventually just leave.

“Hey” His voice sounded sad even muffled by the water.

You didn’t respond.

“I know that you can hear me. And I want to tell you that I’m sorry...I...shouldn’t have said that.”

You opened one eye to his fuzzy form slouched above you.

“You’re absolutely right. It is your choice about what you want to do. And I need to support you. But I need you to talk to me about it first. It’s still going to have an impact on me. On us. But that doesn’t mean it will change anything about us. Or how I feel about you. How much I love you.”

The water sloshed quietly as you slid yourself up the back of the tub. He didn’t notice that you were listening fully.

“And you are going to be, whenever you want to be, the most amazing mother. You’re so kind and you love so deeply. You’re so fiercely protective that nothing will harm our child. I can’t wait to see that. I can’t wait..”

“Geebs, it’s not an interview”, you said, laughing quietly at the way he tended to ramble when saying something he felt was important.

He looked down at you, surprised.

“There you are!”

You smoothed your hair back, relishing the cool air of the tiled bathroom.

“Thank you”, you responded quietly.

“I needed to say it. What I said was wrong”, he sighed, perching himself on the edge of the tub, his back to you.

“I’m so scared.”

“I’m scared too.”

You looked up at him, slightly astounded that your take on everything the hard way George had responded. He gently drew a line back and forth on the water’s surface - “In fact. I’m bloody terrified.”

“Why?”

He concentrated on the line, avoiding your gaze. “Well, what if something goes wrong? What if...you know..we...loseit. Or it hates us? Or it doesn’t learn anything we try and teach it? What if I’m not a good father? Or god forbid, it’s an Arsenal supporter?”

You pulled yourself up further, bringing your knees to your chest and laughed. “Geebs, what football team our child supports is the least of your worries.”

“Are you ready?” Bathwater rippled outwards from his arm as he placed his large hand softly against your stomach.

You paused and took his other hand in yours, water streaming into the crisp blue of his shirt - “Yes. I think I am. It took this bath and a good long cry. But...I dunno. Feels right. I’m still worried though.”

“You’re going to be an amazing mum.”

“I know,” you said, smiling cheekily. “You’ll be a better father though.”

“Oh..c’mon now.”

You blushed and pulled your mouth tightly into a smile - “You know, I actually decided I wanted to have your children after our sixth date.”

He pursed his mouth, trying to remember the exact memory.

“Wait...are you talking about the time we went to that karaoke bar in Shoreditch with Anna and that lot and I sang that Heart song?”

“Maybe..”

“Are you telling me that my show stopping rendition of Barracuda made you figure that out? Wow...it must have been really sexy then..”

“Oh fuck off!” You said, splashing his thigh.

“Hey! Watch the trousers! This is Dior! I’ve got to give it back next week!” He feigned horror at the mark growing on his leg.

The two of you sat silently for a few minutes, content with the immense agreement you had made. George lazily rubbed his thumb on the back of your hand as you leaned back against the embrace of the curved tub.

“Piglet?”

“Yes,” you murmured.

“When did it happen? It couldn’t have been that long ago...do you think it was after Daisy’s housewarming when we were too pissed to make it to the bedroom and we fucked on the kitchen floor?”

You didn’t respond, chuckling quietly instead.

“Or...was it the other night. You know. When the new Attenborough series about Antarctica got a bit tedious..”

“Geebs, it doesn’t really matter. It’s happening regardless.”

“Yes. Quite right. It probably would be pretty disturbing to learn that you were conceived to the soundtrack of a squawking flock of Emperor penguins. Anyways..Regardless...We should probably think about moving soon. I’ve actually been thinking about looking in Barnes for a while now. I want to raise our children there. In a proper house. It’s a bit more expensive than when I was a kid..but I think we can manage...I’ll speak with mum...see what she can find out..

“Geebs?”

“Yes, Pigs?”

“We’ve just decided to have the bloody kid. I’m too tired to figure out where we’re going to put it right now.”

“Oh. Of course.” He jumped up, reaching for a towel off the rack. “Let’s go to bed. I’m exhausted too.”

You gently lifted yourself out of the water and stepped into the open towel, wrapping it around yourself - “Go get ready. I’ll be there in a bit.”

He came back five minutes later, changed out of his suit and into his favourite pair of pyjama bottoms; printed with sock monkeys and so threadbare, they needed to go in the bin but you couldn’t break the news to him. You dragged a comb through your wet hair as he wrapped his arms around your shoulders. His bare chest was cool against your bath warmed skin.

“Darling?”, he murmured, resting his chin on the crook of your neck. “Can I tell you something?”

“Sure.”

“I’d almost forgotten how great your tits look when you’re in the bath.” His eyes met yours in the mirror.

You rolled your eyes. “Well get ready then. They’re only going to get bigger these next nine months.”

His face lit up - “This pregnancy is going to be the best thing that ever happened to me.”

You quickly turned and tapped him on the stomach with your brush, laughing.

“You pervert.”

“Ow! That hurt!”

And you wish that you’d known then, in all that doubt and worry, that in nine months and a few weeks time, you’d open your eyes in a sterile room full of blinding light to see George holding a squirming bundle of pale pink in his long arms. So small in his hands. The tears wouldn’t stop and you won’t be sure if it’s the pain of the feeling of your hips broken, body split in two or the waves of joy that kept washing over you again and again, the elation almost drowning your heart. He would lean down, a small cry emerging from the bundle. “Look, Pigs. Look at her. I’m sorry they gave her to me first..hold her.” And the words wouldn’t be able to form as you moved your mouth into a yes. The bundle on your chest while George, his eyes tearful as he delicately placed his thumb on your daughter’s rosebud lips. She would blink, her eyes the same sea blue as her father’s as he brushed her cheek. And he would look to you, a vastness of love you’d never seen. “She’s so perfect...you’re perfect. You’re so bloody perfect.” His kisses against your crying eyes. On your lips. And all the blood, the doctor’s commands, the panic, the nausea, the doubt. All that doubt and worry would be worth it all.

The end of my RN career, health nuts, and gut health

I was an RN for a few years before finally letting it go before my 2nd child was born. But somewhere along the way, I lost faith in conventional medicine. I even began to think my own midwives were too “medical”, aka medwives. I felt like protocol and paperwork were becoming more important than people. I was concerned that my work was not actually contributing to people’s health but contributing to their chronic illness. I felt like I was just following doctor’s orders and becoming a pill-pusher. Yeah, how about those side effects? What is okay about being told the drugs (and vaccines) were safe and effective even though they weren’t really? Don’t my patients have right to informed consent? How do I offer to patients when I am not fully informed myself? And with the pro-death culture we are heading to, I don’t even want blood on my hands over issues like abortion and euthanasia.

There’s a time and a place for life saving medical interventions .... but dealing with the root issue and experiencing true healing rather is a more sustainable method of addressing illness than band-aid solutions that can create more problems later on.

Many people ask me if I will go back to working as an RN once the kids get older. I say no. Partially it’s because I plan to be busy homeschooling and bearing children as long as possible and plenty of other dreams that involve being my husband’s helper and blessing the world in other ways. But also partially is because I don’t think it would be ethical of me to participate in the medical industry as an RN. It is against my conscience and against my current views on health care.

Oh Michelle, how about the people you might reach through your career? How about all that time and money you invested in your education?

I could go on a multi-part blog series on this topic of career later lol. But in short, I can be reaching my children and those who enter our home, and the experience of nursing school was not a waste. (In some ways I might argue it was a waste but it’s part of the journey God led me on.) I do have dreams apart from being an RN. I’m not enslaved to my career choice. I do have dreams of reaching others and promoting health in the future but in a way that suits my conscience and involves truly doing good to others. I have plenty of other dreams too but that’s for another blog post.

I met a few nurses that did regret letting go of their nursing jobs to be with their kids, but that doesn't concern me. I don’t have fear of letting go of this profession. I think the only reason I would ever go back is if I were widowed and desperate. I would have to go back to school to get my experience up to date anyway. I think there are other paths to choose from that don’t result in personal compromise (some may disagree, that’s okay.)

So, my story on health nuts.... I think I was around 23 when I made friends with someone I considered a health nut. She ate stuff like... quinoa. I mistakenly pronounced it “kih-noah” vs. “keen- nwa”. Lol. I also remember during my nursing school times I was on the bus, feeling pretty lonely and met a lady who used to be an RN. I asked her why she was no longer an RN. She told me she kept getting sick in the hospital and quit. Now she works at a health food market. Huh.

I think over the years I have become increasingly a “health nut”. In the sense that I am pretty open to natural alternatives, of course with some skepticism to all things that I take in. However I figure, if we are going to question the things people pitch to us such as pharmaceuticals, or nutriceuticals, than... we should definitely question the things we put in our body every few hours, every day, 365 days a year then. I have failed to be consistent and desire to grow more consistent. I think I have health nut dreams, that I never thought I would dream about. Like having a farm, growing my own food and raising my own animals. A city girl like me, saying that?? I see the problems of industrialization and everything coming to us too conveniently. I see the value of hard work and knowing where our food comes from. I guess the scene from Little House on the Prairie, where Ms. Ingalls receives sweet potatoes or yams for their Christmas dinner and she is just SO GRATEFUL. That really moved me, and caused me to wonder if I think that daily provision of food is really a big deal to me, and why or why not? When you work hard to grow on your food, or when the food really costs you something, it does generate this sense of... value for the things we have put our efforts into and get to enjoy the fruit of that work and nourish ourselves. Now with the modern supermarkets, I feel that there’s a disconnect with ourselves and our food, and the processes that happen to allow us to nourish ourselves and bless the world.

And recently I have come across something that I am really excited about. It’s gut health. I remember a few years ago or so, being in a bookstore in a ferry and there was a book about the story of the gut. I just looked at the cover and that’s it. Then a friend told me about the GAPS (gut and psychology syndrome) diet. Also I have a couple of friends who can’t stop talking about their health products that address “the root of the issue” - namely, gut health, balancing sugars and addressing inflammation. Then, I watched a video from the Highwire with Del Bigtree that discusses the discovery of fecal transplants in improving the lives of children with Autism, along with the amazing animal studies around fecal transplants. Then, a light bulb came on for me. I see sick people EVERYWHERE. Including myself. I need to improve my gut health. Afterward, a friend suggested I watch “The Gut Solution” docu-series”. The content is amazing so far. My husband kindly let me purchase the package. I really don’t think this information will be just for my benefit. I trust the Lord will bless those around me and the future generation with this information.

I feel pretty dumb, considering I was a "health care professional", for not knowing such basic concepts about health ... Like did you know you are supposed to have at least 1 bowel movement a day? And since you eat 3 times a day at least, that means 3 bowel movements a day is even better? Did you know that having those regular poops is how your body cleans out the toxins that build up in your body? Did you know there are negative consequences in holding those toxins in too long, and that the food you eat starts becoming poison to you if it isn’t properly digested and eliminated? Did you know that if you take the best supplements in the world, it actually won’t benefit you much unless your gut health is in order so you can properly absorb those nutrients?

I’m not a doctor but I’m totally amazed by this very basic information. Other things I know I need to work on is just avoiding processed foods, eat whole foods, drink enough water and get to bed at a decent time. And exercise and enjoy deep breathing. Anyway I hope in the future I can share about my current health issues and goals and track some progress. So far I was inspired to go out and buy Slippery Elm and see if it improves my bathroom issues.

I see so much of God’s design in learning this stuff. It’s so amazing to learn how God designed us to function! It’s encouraging to know there is hope and healing for everyone if they are willing to learn this information and pass it on.

Once you piss me off...I'm Heartless

Once you piss off a person like me I’m done, I’m emotionless. I don’t care about you or your life…fuck you fuck your feelings fuck your family all that…it takes so much to really make me angry. If you keep picking at me Ima blow up and I’ll knock you out. I had anger issues growing up all of my life. I learned to control them, I keep my mouth shut. Sports and hobbies helped as well as good friends. My mom helps a lot, I can tell her anything and she calms me down. Im genuinely a nice guy I go out of my way to help people. I work hard and do my job at work. Because I don’t kiss up or act worried fragile egos crumble. They think I don’t care. I start off going 100 mph doing everything I can to show I care. Once you mess me over or I peep game, you fucked up, now I push the limits to fuck with you as a joke to me. I don’t care about what you say or think. I shut off emotions proudly. If you want me to be happy then don’t take me for granted, then I’m the best person in the world. So, the reason I was so angry this morning is because my supervisor Sam showed up this morning picking at me again. He’s been doing this for the past year. When I came to this job, I never missed work I always came early, I knocked out all of my jobs. I was eager to learn and do everything, then Sam started showing his Hoe tendencies. At that time it was to other people, which I peeped it, but it didn’t really effect me. When he started picking at me it started when I had all of the credentials besides one more year to get a promotion. At my job we have 3 positions, Mechanic 1,2 and 3, 3 being the highest. A Hispanic guy who is younger than me who I went to orientation with jumped from a mechanic 1 to a 3. How? I don’t know. He got the job no issues. I went up the ranks from a 1 to a 2 tried to go 2 to 3 I was here for a year and a half at the time. They tell me “you did everything right but we want you to wait another year.” So I waited. Job never came back even though sam said he would save the position. Now he’s a hoe to me. You messed me over. He had no issues giving the Hispanic guy the job. I still worked hard and did my job, but I lost my respect for him. He spineless, so basically its fuck you. I stopped trying to kiss up to him point blank period. For an example, he throws yearly Christmas parties for the body shops we bring food and we sit together and eat at the main location. The last two years I skipped them. The reason, “I don’t fuck with them like that.” That’s it, I don’t get paid to make friends I get paid to work. I did go to the thanksgiving party at my location with the truck mechanics up front. This is basically where majority of the black people work at the Kelly location in 5th Ward. So I recall sam crying saying “I give you guys a day to sit and not work, I throw a party and guys don’t show up?” Oh well shouldn’t have fucked me over. From that point on, Sam tries to pick at me. Critique every little thing that I do. Every single job. Even when we knock all of the work out he’ll cry and he actually said, “How come when I show up Tay-Shunn never acts like he’s busy?” The lead tech peter said “Well Sam we don’t have any work.” So Sam said “When I come everyone should jump up and act like they’re doing something even if it’s nothing to do.” Sam is scared of me, he always goes through peter when he has a issue because sam knows I’m unpredictable so he don’t know what he can and can’t say. Mainly because I act unbothered when he tries to yell or I look at him like he is stupid. Just like he sound stupid for what he said. Even if it’s no work, if I show up act like you are doing something WTF…if it’s no work then it’s no cars, what am I suppose to do jumping jacks??? That’s why I don’t have respect for him. It seems like he is one of those guys that got bullied in school and now that he has this position he wants to be treated like Jesus. All he have to do is send more work, not cry like a baby. So basically what happened today, we come in at 5am for overtime, get off at 3:30 so 50hrs a week. Since we don’t have any work Peter was face timing to some woman on his phone, I was writing blogs. So Sam shows up, he don’t blame Peter, he blames me for siting down. So he cuts overtime in half and he says (again telling peter not me) “if I didn’t see Tay-Shunn sitting down you guys would still have overtime. So yal go home at 2:30 (regular time) and come in at 5 (1 hr early). So basically it’s my fault that the overtime was cut and the guys should blame me. So I told peter "Fuck Sam and this Job! I’m quitting.” I know I can make more money at METRO painting and they been calling me. They make is equal to mechanic 3 over here with the overtime added. Peter is trying to talk me out of it, even though he kissed up to sam talking about “I don’t know what he was doing I gave him a job and the vehicle wasn’t here so he sat down.” And he said “Don’t let sam get to you. Let’s try to outlast him.” Even though I’m semi cool with peter it’s still fuck him too. He was sitting down as well. I talked to my mom. She is good at calming my nerves, she said apply and don’t let sam get to me, always act professional, and keep letting him think you are unpredictable. The supervisor at metro, especially on the night shift he said “We don’t get much work at night so bring a tv if you have one, bring snacks, and chill out until something comes in.” I’m just trying to get paid until I finish my bachelors degree so I can become a RN then work towards my next chapter in life. But I’m not going to get picked on by a spineless bitch plain and simple. After talking to my mom I’m good now, I’m calm…but one thing people have to know about me. I’ll bend over backwards to keep someone happy until they do something to make me change…then I’m heartless…

My Life Struggle from Poverty to Poor and Finally winning the Battle.

So I've seen a few posts on social media about the cycle of being poor and poverty. I'm not knocking any of those, as sometimes perception by people can be different, but there is something that I wanted to bring to everyone's attention (some of you may already know this); but there is a difference between being poor and impoverished. I've statuses regarding living paycheck-to-paycheck, struggling to make car and house payments and buying groceries and clothes for oneself or the family. Essentially, this is poor; you have money coming in, you may or may not qualify for state/federal benefits, but somehow, with a struggle you're getting by. Poverty is a question of a paycheck or if you have one, it is so little that the idea of having a house payment or a car payment is a pipe dream. You likely rent some low-down, slum home/apartment or something, and that is a struggle to maintain payments for. You ARE state/federal assistance for everything that you can and it's not maybe; you DEFINITELY qualify! You do most of your clothes shopping at thrift stores or take donations from friends, family, or some charity organization and just are thankful you have clothes, let alone if they're new for work/school. You continue to wear these clothes, even after they are totally worn out, too big/small for you, because you can't afford to worry about anything else. Grocery shopping is limited to community cupboards, cheap grocery stores that sell super cheap bulk "filler" foods like macaroni, hotdogs, block cheese, and peanut butter you could grease an axle with. If you're lucky, someone in the home works at a food restaurant with a really cool and giving boss that lets you take spare food home to the family; or even makes a whole meal for the family once in awhile for you to enjoy... yes, enjoy, because it's a "rich-feeling" welcome change. Everyone has experienced different struggles in their life like this... Let me tell you about mine, growing up... My mother married at a young age when she became pregnant with me. She divorced within a year; the reasons differ, depending on who you ask and I quite frankly view it as something in her past and not mine; so I let it go and live my life. Later, she met my stepfather, who was an Army Vet and a Telecommunications and Electrician (by how he was trained in the military). Of course, cause he did not follow the customary apprenticeship programs, it was difficult to find work because he didn't have the official license. Eventually we found ourselves living in a 2-floor, slum apartment in the outskirts of Philadelphia, PA. Water and electricity was the occasional luxury, but somehow it rarely got turned off, but it was always cold or hot in the house because there was no A/C and the furnace was only occasionally ran. My mother worked as a telemarketer for minimum wage for a photography studio and my stepdad was a pizza delivery guy, making less than minimum wage as tips were expected to supplement this income (yeah right). Cheap generic cereal with powdered milk was breakfast (if we had any), and thankfully, I got free school lunches in kindergarten. Dinner was macaroni and cheese; everyday, because it was a cheap filler meal. Most of my clothes came from family hand me downs that I wore until they fell apart; because we couldn't afford anything. Understand this was 1977-1979, and this is while we also received public assistance for food, welfare; we had no medical insurance to speak of. Somewhere in all that, my stepdad applied and was accepted into Lincoln Tech University in the Electrical Engineering Technician program. My stepdad continued to work 7-days a week for scraps and the occasional pizza that the owner would send home with him when he got off work after midnight. Nothing was better than being woken up at 1 a.m. to enjoy some pizza; a real treat! My stepdad would rarely sleep, except for when he was so exhausted, he collapsed with his face in a tech book. Fortunately, my stepdad was a genius; he would dream about his homework, answering the Calculus equations and wake up in the morning and hurry and right down the answers. I remember looking at his transcript later in life; he maintained a 3.6 GPA throughout school. Things never got better during that time. My occasional babysitter taught me how to read at 4 years old, so when I started kindergarten at 6 years old, I was already reading at a 4th grade level. My mother didn't start me at 5 years, because she didn't know how and was too busy trying to work to keep us alive. Fortunately, public school invested in me and I streamlined my way through gifted programs for reading, science, and mathematics. Eventually, after my stepdad graduated school he began looking for work in Electrical Engineering. It was hard, because most of the time, the hand-me-down VW bug didn't work, unless my stepdad could perform a miracle with scraps he found or someone gave him parts (we couldn't afford otherwise). My stepdad eventually found a job in Sherman, TX with Texas Instruments making around $12/hour; this was 1979 and that wage was approximately equivalent to about $38/Hour today. So I went and lived with my grandparents for the summer, while my parents drove to Oklahoma/Texas area to look for a house. They found a beat-up old trailer in a trailer park in Cartwright, Oklahoma that we settled into. It was like moving into a mansion for me. My stepdad never missed a day of work; even when the car broke down (very often) he would walk over 20 miles each direction to get to work and back home. Fortunately, he would occasionally get rides to work from strangers on the side of the road. Continuing with our good luck, he made friends with a guy named "Mark" that in exchange for gas money, would drive from Denison, TX to Cartwright, OK to pick my stepdad up for work and then drive him home again. Eventually, we saved money and was able to buy from a stranger, an old 1978 station wagon that lasted a few years. My stepdad worked hard and was given good pay raises, never laid-off, and even was promoted a few times. My mother found a warehouse shipping job at "Crazy Crow Trading Post" dealing with Native American and Frontier-style clothing, shelter, etc... for those that participated in frontier-style re-enactments. I got into Native American dancing and would go to Pow-Wows all over the place, wearing stuff that I was able to put together from what my mother was able to get for me (at a discount) from work. My mother was eventually able to go to night school at the local Vocational-Technical school (Kiamichi Vo-Tech) and get her LVN license. While my stepdad's career, combined with my mother's warehouse work, moved us from poverty to poor, my mother becoming an LVN is what helped us to move from poor to lower middle-class. I later graduated high school and pursued military service and it was during those 6 years, my mother became an RN and her and my stepdad moved into middle class and was able to finally buy new cars and a house. My life repeated much of a similar path. I left active duty with strong leadership/management skills and a California EMT certification (that Texas would not accept). I lived in a trailer home I rented, while working for K-Mart in undercover security for $6/Hour, with a girlfriend and a baby daughter on the way. I used WIC and medicaid and it was a God-send. Things changed some and I eventually found myself working in Carrollton, TX as an EMT-Intermediate for $8/Hour. I worked hard, got increased responsibilities, more pay ($12/Hour, in 1999). I left to go to school for medical ultrasound and eventually got a job, with overtime, that helped me to make over $80k/year. This was short-lived as I was soon activated in the National Guard and my income dropped to $27k/year. I had two cars, a house, and was looking at solid middle-clas with eventual quick movement to upper middle, when I lost it all in bankruptcy due to the dramatic change in income and a spouse who (unknown to me) couldn't manage money/bills properly and was having an on/off affair with an old boyfriend (we eventually divorced, when she tried to proposition one of my best friends and I was told). Upon release from active duty, I pursued a career as a police officer, rising in the ranks until I was at the Executive Command Staff level at almost $82k/year. Due to politics and burn-out, I retired 2-years ago, but fortunately had money in retirement that helped, along with temporarily returning to EMS for $10/Hour, while I went to night school. Granted, I already possessed a BA in Criminal Justice and a Masters in Public Administration. I worked on an ambulance 45 hours a week, taught college government classes on my days off, taught CPR, ACLS, & PALS on the weekends, and went to night school for almost a year. Fortunately, working 3 jobs and using my Texas Veteran's Education benefits, I didn't need public assistance, but it was still a struggle. I now make $42k/year (government IT job), own a home, and I don't really struggle anymore. However, I remember the struggle. I remember living in poverty, I remember living poor, and America needs to really look at itself and make some changes to help those still struggling to get by and even fighting to raise themselves up out of the poverty line. I have friends that make this struggle still. I see them and try to help them any way they'll let me. I don't do it because I pity them; pity is for the weak and by no means is my friend weak, but a strong, independent, fighter. I reach out because I truly care and love them. I fought the fight and won; if there is something I can do to help them win the same battle I will. Even if it's providing that little bit of sunshine to their life (like my stepdad's pizza owner did for us), with stuff for Christmas or something I know they like to have but just can't afford it right now. Very few were ever there for me, but I can be there for my people. Not out of charity, but out of love and understanding. I'm not saying if your struggle was not like mine, then you don't know what you're talking about. I'm simply trying to provide context for those that may have a hard-time understanding what poverty and poor is like; the difficulty of the struggle to rise above it and the fact is, you can overcome it, but it's hard work and you will have setbacks and triumphs; however, you can win!
