Where the line between partner and son is blurry, when he asked Bruce why he was never adopted, when Bruce used that against him later to claim Dick had always hated Jason so Bruce could use that to allow himself to scream at, blame and hit Dick.

And Dick kinda believed him, believed that he was at fault. God, what a cruel thing, to use someone’s desire to be your son to claim that means they hated your other son.

And need versus want. Because even with Jason freshly dead, maybe a part of Bruce still knew he wanted a partner but he convinced himself he didn’t need one, and since Jason died, he decided that he shouldn’t have a partner. And for Dick to feel unwanted and not needed and have those feelings affirmed years later again, to be told that Bruce regretted ever having not only Jason, but also Dick in his life.
