bro i hate when people get mad about logical conclusion. if u make a post like “i hate lily bc she married james and i think he’s an asshole” and u tag it with all the prosn*pe tags, u can’t then be like “i NEVER SAID i wanted her to end up with snape!! why does she have to end up with anyone!” she’s harry’s mom. she does ancient magic to keep him alive in the wake of voldemort. if she ends up with no one there’s no series. or alt did u want james to marry someone else. u seemingly hate james, so i dont think u would be satisfied with anyone who married james. the reason the binary exists is because we’re talking about harry’s parents, without whom the story does not exist. am i fucking insane, or was the boy NOT born from an immaculate conception or the crashing waves of the sea a la aphrodite.

i’ve said it before, i’ll say it again. u can consider SWM as sexual assault, but that understanding has to exist in the context of when these novels were written. between 1998 and 2010 the act of pantsing someone was a widely used trope. it happened in almost every kids tv show i watched growing up. none of those children were supposed to be perceived as being assaulted. see also: wedgies being a super popular trope in media. it’s FINE if u want to present it as the marauders did something heinous to snape in ur own hcs/fanworks/interpretations. idc, i will not engage. but like HOLY SHIT we cannot possibly be living in a world where the cultural context of these things does not exist because it’s not convenient to ur narrative. the canon does not support SWM as an act of sexual assault. what the canon supports is that snape felt humiliated and embarrassed, as it does for any piece of media from that time with a pantsing happening. the canon also supports lily saying she would rather kiss the giant squid then james DURING the incident, and that snape called lily a SLUR because he didn’t want her help.

i’m not saying all this to say u can’t like or enjoy any of these characters. they’re all complex and interesting. you can also attach whatever interpretations on them you see fit. HOWEVER, what i AM saying, is ur gonna have to back ur shit up. ur not “wiping the floor with them with canon” if ur not understanding the cultural context of children’s media at the time, and only saying “but doing this is sexual assault the law agrees!!!!” the law in 2025 might agree but the tropes of the children’s media of the time don’t come with that context. you can write this type of dynamic while being informed of that now, but u can’t exactly be shocked when people don’t see it that way. u gotta back it up with more shit.

i like examining snape as a character. i think he and sirius are very interesting character studies in what could happen in relation to abuse and indoctrination, overt and covert. but holy shit, we cannot be adding things that aren’t there without at least the understanding that the interpretation of these actions will differ from person to person.

and if u are doing these things, u don’t get to turn around and say “oh they ran away with their tail between their legs” if someone chooses to stop engaging with u. people have whole lives outside of the internet. u don’t win a debate just because someone stopped responding. I’d suggest going onto Fanlore (a creditable source!) and researching for yourself, but I’d also like to help explain.

Proship means you’re in favor of shipping. Like how people are pro-choice, or pro-life, or pro-gun. The pro- in proship is NOT short for, and does NOT stand for, problematic. Otherwise pro-choice would be problematic-choice and that doesn’t make sense? Pro- as in for. For the right to choose. Vs anti. Anti-abortion. Anti-gun. Anti-ship.

Proship means “ship and let ship.” It means you don’t harass other people for liking things different to you because everyone is different and has different likes and dislikes. Maybe you like fluff (for example) but someone else likes angst. You may not understand why they do, but it’s just as valid as your love for fluff. Or like A likes pineapple on pizza but you like pepperoni. Or I like cilantro but you think it tastes like soap. Fandom is a big pizza party and we all have things we like and things we don’t. That includes age gap ships, toxicity, rape/non-con, incest, violence, what have you.

When you judge someone for what they like (like that person, who can’t even type out what they despise) you open yourself up for judgement. Proship... doesn’t do that. If you like X and I don’t like X, that has nothing to do with me. You can like X and I can like Y and we can still get along because there’s more to us as individuals than just liking one thing. Antis/antishippers don’t seem to understand that.

Proship is also tagging properly so if people do have problems with certain subjects, they don’t have to see it. If I can’t stand rape/non-con, for example, I’m not going to click on a fic tagged “rape/non-con” if I even see it because I know it’ll only hurt me. But a work tagged r*pe/n0n-c0n won’t be filtered out so I will see it and it’ll hurt me because the author thought they were helping by censoring but they didn’t.

Again, please please please do research. Don’t just take the word of a stranger who throws emotionally-charged buzzwords to sway you into their favor. Please. And that goes for this ask too. If you don’t believe or want to believe me, I implore you to do your research and decide for yourself.

So I'm currently unemployed because I got fired for taking too much sick leave (it was legally sketchy blah blah blah but in the end I just can't work and take care of myself and investigate my mystery health problems at the same time). So I've been spending more time writing!

I really admire your writing and loved Hunger Pangs. I'm looking forward to the poly elements developing and I'm wondering if you have any advice for writing about poly. I've made one of my projects a snarky take on "write what you know" ... Apparently what I know is southern gothic meets Pacific northwest gothic, chronic illness pandemic surrealism, and falling back-asswards into threesomes.

I know this is a very open-ended question and I don't expect an answer, I'm just curious about it if you have the energy. As a writer, trying to write honestly / realistically about polyamory/enm, I'm curious if you have any thoughts on what's different about portraying monogamy or nonmonogamy in books, romance or erotica or otherwise.

I'm trying to read examples but it's hard to find examples that fit the niche I'm looking at. Excuse me if this question is nonsense, it's the cluster headaches.

I'm sorry to hear you've been dealing with all that and solidarity on the cluster headaches. But I'm glad you're finding an outlet through writing! And I hope you're happy with an open-ended ramble in response because oh boy, there's a lot I could talk about and I could probably do a better job of answering this sort of thing with more specific questions, but let's see where we end up.

There's definitely a big difference between writing polyamory/ENM (ethical non-monogamy) and what people often expect from monogamous love stories.

Just even from a purely sales and marketing standpoint, the moment you write anything polyamorous (or even just straight up LGBTQIA+ without the ENM) you're going to get considered closer to being erotica/obscene than hetero romances. It's an unfair bias, but it's one that exists in our society. But also the Amazon algorithm and their shitty, shitty human censors. Especially the ones that work the weekends. (Talking to you, Carlos 🖕.)

So not only do you start out hyper-aware that you're writing something that is highly stigmatized or fetishized (at least I'm hyper-aware) but that you are also writing for a niche market that is starving for positive content because the content that exists is either limited, not what they want, or is problematic in some fashion i.e. highly stigmatized or fetishy. And even then, the wants, desires, and expectations of the community you're writing for are complex and wildly varied and hard to fit into an easy formula.

When writing monogamous love stories, there is a set expectation that’s really hard to fuck up once you know it. X person meets Y. Attraction happens, followed by some sort of minor conflict/resolution. Other plot may happen. A greater catalyst involving personal growth for both parties (hopefully) happens. Follow the equation to its ultimate resolution and achieve Happily Ever After. 

But writing ENM is... a lot more difficult, if only because of the pure scope of possibilities. You could try to follow the same equation and shove three (or more) people into it, but it rarely works well. Usually because if you’re doing it right, you won’t have enough room in a single character arc to allow for enough growth, and if ENM requires anything in abundance, it’s room to grow.

And this post is huge so I’m going to put the rest under a cut :)

There's also a common refrain in certain online polyam/ENM circles that triads and throuples are overrepresented in media and they may be right to some extent. Personally, I believe the issue isn't that triads and throuples are overrepresented, but that there is such minuscule positive rep of ethical non-monogamy in general, that the few tiny instances we have of triads in media make it seem like it's "everywhere" when in actuality, it's still quite rare and the media we do have often veers into Unicorn Hunter fetish porn. Which is its own problematic thing. And just to be clear, I’m not including this part to dissuade you from writing "falling back-asswards into threesomes." If anything, I need more of it and would hook it directly into my brain if I could. I'm just throwing it out there into the void in the hope that someone will take the thought and run with it, lol.

I’d love to see more polyfidelitous rep in fiction, just as much as I’d like to see more relationship anarchy too. More diversity in fiction is always good.

Another thing that differs in writing ENM romance vs conventional monogamy is the feeling like you need to justify yourself. There's a lot of pressure to be as healthy and non-problematic as possible because you are being held to a higher standard of criticism. Both from people from without the ENM communities, and from the people within. Granted, some people don't give a shit and just want to read some fantastic porn (valid) but there are those who will cheerfully read Fifty Shades of Bullshit and call it "spicy" and "romantic," then turn around and call the most tooth-rottingly-sweet-fluff about a queer platonic polycule heresy. That's just the way the world works.

(Pro-tip for author life in general: never read your own reviews; that way madness lies. I glimpsed one the other day that tagged Hunger Pangs as “ethical cheating” and just about had an aneurism.)

And while that feeling of needing to justify yourself comes from a valid place of being excluded from the table of socially accepted norms, it can also be to the detriment of both the story and the subject matter at hand. I've seen some authors bend so far over backward to avoid being problematic in their portrayal of ENM, they end up being problematic for entirely different reasons. Usually because they give such a skewed, rose-tinted perspective of how things work, it ends up coming off as well... a bit culty and obnoxious tbh.

“Look how enlightened we are, freed from the trappings of monogamy and jealousy! We’re all so honest and perfect and happy!”

Yeah, uhu, sure Jan. Except here’s the thing, not all jealousy is bad. How you act on it can be, but jealousy itself is an important tool in the junk drawer that is the range of human emotion. It can clue us in to when we’re feeling sad or neglected, which in turn means we should figure out why we’re feeling those things. Sometimes it’s because brains are just like that and anxiety is a thing. Other times it’s because our needs are actually being neglected and we are in an unhealthy situation we need to remedy. You gotta put the work in to figure it out. Which is the same as any style of relationship, whether it’s mono, polyam or whatever flavor of ENM you subscribe to* And sometimes you just gotta be messy, because that’s how humans are. Being afraid to show that mess makes it a dishonest portrayal, and it also robs you of some great cannon fodder for character development.

Which brings me in a roundabout way to my current pet peeve in how certain writers take monogamous ideals and apply them to ENM, sometimes without even realizing it. The “Find the Right Person and Settle Down” trope.

Often, in this case, ENM or polyamory is treated as a phase. Something you mature out of with age or until you meet “The One(tm).” This is, of course, an attempt to follow the mono style formula expected in most romances. And while it might appeal to many readers, it’s uh, actually quite insulting. 

To give an example, I am currently seeing this a lot in the Witcher fandom. 

Fanon Netflix!Jaskier is everyone's favorite ethical slut until he meets Geralt then woops, wouldn’t you know, he just needed to find The One(tm). Suddenly, all his other sexual and romantic exploits or attractions mean nothing to him. Let's watch as he throws away a core aspect of his personality in favor of a man. 

Yeah... that sure showed those societal norms... 

If I were being generous, I’d say it’s a poor attempt at showing New Relationship Euphoria and how wrapped up people can become in new relationships. But honestly, it’s monogamous bias eking its way in to validate how special and unique the relationship is. Because sometimes people really can’t think of any other way to show how important and valid a relationship is without defining it in terms of exclusivity. Which is a fundamental misunderstanding of how ENM works for a lot of people and invalidates a lot of loving, serious and long-term relationships.

This is not to say that some polyam/poly-leaning people can't be happy in monogamous relationships! I am! (I consider myself ambiamorous. I'm happy with either monogamy or polyamory, it really just depends on the relationship(s) I’m in.) But I also don't regard my relationship with a mono partner as "settling down" or "growing up." It's just a choice I made to be with a person I love, and it's a valid one. Just like choosing to never close yourself off to multiple relationships is valid. And I wish more people realized that, or rather, I wish the people writing these things knew that :P

Anyway, I think I’ve rambled enough. I hope this collection of incoherent thoughts actually makes some sense and might be useful.

*A good resource book that doesn't pull any punches in this regard is Polysecure by Jessica Fern. It's a wonderfully insightful read that explores the messier side of consensual non-monogamy, especially with how it can be affected by trauma or inter-relationship conflicts. But it also shows how to take better steps toward healthy, ethical non-monogamy (a far better job than More Than Two**) and conflict resolution, making it a valuable resource both for someone who is a part of this relationship style***, but also for writers on the outside looking in who might have a very simple or misguided idea of what conflict within polyam/ENM relationships might look like, vs traditional monogamous ones.

** The author of More Than Two has been accused of multiple accounts of abuse within the polyamorous community, with many of his coauthors having spoken out about the gaslighting and emotional and psychological damage they experienced while in a relationship with him. "Hi everyone!" you whispered excitedly at the camera. "And welcome back to my channel! I have to whisper because Jaehyun is downstairs and I don’t want him to hear my intro," you explained before turning the camera around and pointing it down your staircase towards your living room. Your boyfriend was facing away from you on the couch and you zoomed in on the back of his luscious head of hair before you tiptoed back into your bedroom. "Anyway," you continued to whisper, "today is a special day! Why is it special you may ask? Well it’s because I'm going to be doing yet another--," you paused for dramatic effect and took a moment to bring your face close to the lens so your lips took up most of the frame, "--PRANK.” You pulled away from the camera and shook your head in offense at how much that last word hurt while whispering. “Hold on. Let me move again.”

You moved to sit on the floor inside your closet. But it wasn't that big, so you ended up trapped in a corner with some of the clothes you had hanging up dangling in your face. “So many of you have requested that I do the 'I can’t stop kissing you prank' and I figured now would be the perfect opportunity since Jaehyun has come to visit me for the weekend.” A sound bite of applause and cheers played as clapping hands emojis appeared on the screen with a burst of confetti. “I’ve already set up the camera downstairs and it’s currently recording Jaehyun playing Mario Kart. His favorite game these days. Well, his only favorite game because that’s all he ever plays.” You rolled your eyes dramatically with the matching emoji appearing next to your head. “And we have a special treat! You remember our close friend Yuta from my vlogs, right?” Just then the thirst-trappiest picture of Yuta you could find on his Instagram popped up in the corner of the screen. “Well, he’ll be calling during the middle of the prank to ask Jaehyun something complicated whilst I slobber him down.” You rapidly flicked your tongue between your lips as if you were a lizard and accentuated the sound it made. “It’s going to be great!” In your excitement you raised up your arm and accidentally hit the stack of shoe boxes next to you, causing one of them to come tumbling down with a loud thump on your head and then one on the floor. “Shit, ow!” you cursed under your breath.

“Babe?” Your boyfriend called to you from downstairs. The audio of his voice was low, therefore subtitles were placed onto the screen whenever he spoke. “Is that you?”

“Yeah!” you answered him while making a nervous face at the camera. “I’m just changing clothes!”

“Oh, okay--MOVE PEACH!”

You rolled your eyes again and exaggerated the deep breath you took before addressing the audience one last time. “Let’s start this prank before he comes up here to check on me.”

With an old school static transition, the video cut to a front view of Jaehyun sitting on the couch with you descending the staircase in the distance behind him before coming into full view of the camera. You sat down on the couch next to Jaehyun and wrapped your arms around his neck, startling both him and your puppy who was laying between you, and who seemed to forget your existence whenever Jaehyun visited. 

“Oh, hey babe. How was your nap?” he said, pausing the game to fully greet you.

“It was alright. I woke up because you weren’t lying next to me anymore.” Ew! How were you able to say that with a straight face?! It had always amazed you how sappy you got when the two of you were together. You forced a pout onto your lips before hugging his upper body and moving your face to the crook of his neck to plant a soft kiss onto his exposed collarbone. He smelled like peppermint mixed with his unique man musk. 

“I almost woke you up,” he said as he let you kiss your way up from the base of his neck to just below his ear. 

“Oh, really. Why?” you said against his skin before nipping at the bottom of his earlobe.

“Because I missed having you next to me, too.”

You jerked your head back to look at him in mock disgust. “Jaehyun, you’re so freaking cheesy,” you said then went back to his neck and placed a loud wet kiss against his Adam's apple. “I appreciate the sentiment, but it just sounds so icky coming from you.” It was one thing when you did it, but when he did it it made your insides all gooey and gross. You hated that you loved it.

“But it's true.” He grabbed your chin with his thumb and forefinger and tilted your head backwards, allowing himself easy access to your lips. He gently pecked your lips and you revelled in the soft plumpness of his moisturized skin cells. He moved his hand to grab the side of your face to steady you as he deepened the kiss and his tongue swept across your lips, asking for permission to enter. But as soon as your tongues connected, your dog whined and climbed onto Jaehyun's lap, feeling left out from the attention, and thus breaking yours. 

Now that you had planted the initial kissing seed, it was time to move into phase two of your prank. “Do you want a snack, babe?” you asked him and stood up from the couch.

“Sure. Surprise me.”

Having previously set up the camera, the video cut to you walking into the kitchen, then to you opening the freezer, and then to you popping a plate of pizza rolls into the microwave. While they were heating, you walked over to the camera and pulled out your phone to send a quick text to Yuta telling him to commence the next part of your plan. When finished, you held up your phone to the camera and showed the exchange between you and your friend.

You: It’s your time to shine. 15 minutes.

Sir Yuta: I forgot I had to do this. Umm lemme search the internet and find something to call him about lmaooo

The video cut again to you placing the plate of pizza rolls and two bottled waters on the coffee table in front of Jaehyun right when he let out a shout of victory as his Metal Mario crossed the finish line in first place. 

“What cup was that?” you asked him, pretending to be interested.

“Flower cup, 200cc,” he said as he reached for a pizza roll without looking and ended up burning his finger on the hot snack. “Ow! It’s hot!”

“You knew that before you picked it up!”

Affronted by the pizza rolls, he grabbed one of the bottles of water and took a sip before returning his eyes to the screen. “Do you want to play?”

“Nope. I’ll just watch you play.”

“Are you sure?”

“Yep!”

You watched him customize his kart with some of the new items he had just unlocked before he selected a different cup to play. When the opening sequence of the first race began to play, you repositioned yourself on your knees on the couch cushion next to him and planted a kiss directly on his lips. You felt Jaehyun hum against your lips in satisfaction as he returned the kiss, but when he heard the countdown for the start of the race he quickly pulled back and moved his head to look around you at the TV.

But of course, that didn’t stop you. You forcefully grabbed him by his head and began kissing the spot just below his jaw that you knew drove him crazy. It was a relentless onslaught of teeth, tongue, and lips all at a slow, teasing, and torturous pace.

Believing that Jaehyun was already feeling totally affected, it was confirmed by the absence of noisy cartoon chaos from the race right before Jaehyun ripped you from his neck to counter your attack by shoving his tongue down your throat. The kiss was so heated the two of you had to be censored on the screen by a big blushing emoji. The video quickly cut to the end of the kiss, which lasted way longer than you had anticipated, to where Jaehyun was gently pushing you away from him. “Lemme finish this race and then we can make out or whatever afterwards.”

“Okay,” you agreed happily then popped a (now cold) pizza roll into your mouth.

You allowed him to play through a full race before you resumed your kisses, this time foregoing his neck to smooch him on his cheeks, nose, and anywhere else there was skin available on his face. You obviously prevented Jaehyun from seeing the TV screen and he quickly paused his game before he lost his first-place spot at the beginning of the second race. 

“Did you dream about me?” he asked you dumbfounded but still bearing a smile on his face. “Did I promise you all these kisses in the dream?”

You planted a kiss on each of his eyelids before shaking your head and looking him in his eyes. “I just love you.”

“I love you, too. But--”

You didn’t let him finish talking as you threw your leg over his lap to straddle his waist. You proceeded to kiss him hungrily on his lips, your tongues doing a dance once again as he kissed you back with gusto. You were overcome with a sense of satisfaction when you felt the thud of the pro controller hit the couch next to you (in which the video zoomed in on it as it was falling) and then both his arms wrapped around your waist. 

You revelled in his kisses, thankful that you had a boyfriend with soft, pillowy lips whose kisses you could get lost in for days if allowed. You were so into the makeout session that you forgot you were filming a video and the scene had to be censored once again with another big emoji and quickly cut to the next clip. Luckily, before the two of you got too crazy, Jaehyun’s phone began to ring with Yuta’s name lighting up the top of its screen.

“Noo, baby. Don’t answer it. Kiss me instead,” you genuinely whined for him to keep going. Yuta was a part of your plan but now you just wanted his attention to remain on you. 

Jaehyun removed your hand from his face and picked up his phone off the arm of the couch. “Hold on. It’s Yuta. Let me get rid of him, first.” You pouted at him as he swiped his thumb across the screen to answer the call. “Hey Yuta. I’m kind of in the middle—" You don’t know what was said exactly but you were able to hear Yuta’s tiny hysterics through the small phone speaker. “Wait slow down? When did you get a hamster?” asked Jaehyun in confused concern.

Was that really the best Yuta could come up with???

“Y/N is here, too. Let me put you on speaker.” He did so and held the phone next to your heads. “Okay, start from the beginning.”

Since Yuta’s story was bound to be dumb, you decided to up the hotness on your kissing. You grabbed Jaehyun's face with one hand and planted a kiss on his lips slightly less aggressively than the ones prior, but still pretty roughly.

Yuta’s words appeared as subtitles at the bottom of the screen since the camera’s mic couldn’t pick up his voice that well from the phone’s speaker. “I purchased a hamster the other day from the pet store down the street from my house. His name is Hamster--“ 

“Ow!” Jaehyun pulled you from his lips and gave you a displeased look. You had accidentally bitten his lips a bit too hard as a reaction to Yuta’s dumbass statement. You mouthed an apology to him before returning to nibble on his ear.

“Is everything okay?” asked Yuta.

“Yeah, keep going.” 

“Gladly.” You replied before sticking your tongue in his ear, causing him to flinch violently away from you in protest.

“Ew! Not you!” Jaehyun whispered harshly as he tried to wipe the inside of his ear with his shirt.

“Well, I was cleaning out his cage, but I think I forgot to secure him in his temporary cage and now he’s disappeared! I’m afraid to walk anywhere, so I need you to come over and help me find Hamster.”

“Umm, can’t you call Johnny or Taeyong or--” You started playing kiss tic tac toe with Jaehyun’s forehead.

“They didn’t answer their phones. Trust me you weren’t my first choice,” Yuta said flatly as if he was actually disappointed that he had to call Jaehyun for help.

You couldn’t help but laugh, and now you were trying to locate another PG-rated place to kiss Jaehyun.

“Yeah, I’ll come over.”

“Cool. Y/N can come too after she stops trying to suck your face. Y’all are gross.”

Jaehyun’s brows knit together in confusion. “How did you--” he began to ask, but you snatched his phone from his hand before he could finish his question.

“BYE, YUTA.” You hung up the call and tossed your boyfriend’s phone on the other side of the couch. “Now, where were we?” You leaned in to continue kissing him, but he dodged your lips by turning his face away from you. Your kiss landed on the side of his jaw instead.

“Hey, cool it, babe. Lemme finish this race and we can go to Yuta’s to help him find his hamster.” Obviously, Yuta’s lost (made up) pet wasn’t more important than finishing first place in the special cup on 200cc. He was just so competitive.

You grabbed his arms to thwart his attempts at resuming the game but he was quicker as he threw the controller down his shirt before grabbing your legs and gently tossing you on the other side of the couch. 

“Jaehyun!”

“Y/N!”

You turned your head and the video zoomed in on your eyes as you narrowed them at the camera before launching yet another kissing attack on Jaehyun. In doing so you knocked over two of the pizza rolls and the bottled waters while Metal Mario got hit with three red koopa shells in row.

“Babe, alright! Enough!”

Jaehyun never was one to get this perturbed, so seeing his distress was something new for you. He grabbed you by your thighs before standing up and hoisting you over his shoulders. “Let me give you what you want.”

“Wait no! Jae, stop! STOP! It’s a prank!” you yelled as you flailed helplessly in his grip.

“You can’t back out now--“

“No! Look behind the switch!”

“What?” He turned around completely to walk towards the camera, your butt now on full view as your front side faced the couch. He found the camera hidden behind the game console and picked it up while he lowered you back to your feet. He stared blankly into the lens as he tried to comprehend what had just happened between the two of you.

You swiped the camera from his hands and smiled triumphantly into the lens. “Hey, again everyone! I hope you enjoyed seeing Jaehyun lose his cool and literally THROW ME.”

Your boyfriend stood behind you, still void of emotion and staring into the camera. “You kissed me for a prank? And not because you wanted to?” Aw, no! Why did he sound so dejected?!

“Wait, no! I wanted to but...yeah?”

“I’m hurt.” He said while clutching his chest. Nooooooooo! A bunch of crying faced and heartbroken emojis appear sporadically on the screen.

“Why are you hurt? I was being annoying!”

“Yeah, but I was still into it.”

“We can continue what I started if you want to, babe.” Holding the camera with one hand, you reached out to him with the other to give him a one-armed hug, in which he returned unconsciously.

“No. I’m over it. Let’s go help Yuta.” You smiled at him mischievously and then looked back at the camera. “What?”

“That was part of the prank, too. Yuta was in on it. He doesn’t have a hamster.”

Jaehyun looked at the camera, then at you, and then back at the camera before walking away from you and sitting back on the couch. “I’ve been tricked,” he said absolutely flabbergasted.

You followed him to the couch with the camera and sat beside him, then linked your free arm with his. “Well, that’s it for today! Thanks for watching! I’m going to reheat our pizza rolls now and then I’ll kick his ass in Mario Kart.”

“You wish.”

“Give me a kiss, babe.” You puckered your lips for him, but Jaehyun had other plans of the revenge variety. He cornered you on the couch and put his big body on top of you as he placed sloppy wet kisses along your neck, causing you to shriek and drop the camera to the floor. The only thing visible on the screen was a slanted view of your puppy ripping apart one of his plush toys underneath the couch.

You giggled and squealed as your boyfriend prevented you from closing out your video in one of the most pleasant ways. You knew he didn’t plan on letting up on you anytime soon, so you had to manage. “Don’t forget to like and subscribe, and follow us on social media,” you began yelling from the top of the couch. “I put out a new video every week--Ah! Jae, wait!”

How are y'all puzzled by the end and how TPTB, Dabb and Singer seemingly got the wrong message about fandom, when I've seen countless of Destiel shippers being "pro-ship". Advocating to treat incest, pedo*lia and best*ality the same as queer ships, and how it's totally ok. TPTB are all business, and they made a last minute business decision based on backing the Walker horse and not wanting Destiel to distract from Jared/Sam, whilst being fearful of the gAY scaring away the CisHet Male audience that they so desperately wanted to cling on to for Walker.

Singer has always been a bronly. Has always seen any queer subtext purely as homoeroticism and is definitely the kind of person who would queerbait fans to get views.

I don’t know what you mean by destiel shippers advocating those things? Unless you mean supporting AO3 not being censored and regulated of course? Because if you are one of these people that thinks that AO3 needs censoring then you are part of the problem. Believe me, no one in Destiel fandom that I know of is normalising incest, pedophilia or bestiality. No one thinks those things are part of queer spaces.

Some people multiship though. So long as they respect tagging systems and don’t force other people to have to see nasty stuff like what you’ve mentioned, then let people be into what they’re into. Also something I feel I need to be very clear on, which I haven’t mentioned before but um “meta crew”. Which meta crew would that be? There are many many meta writers in spn fandom. We are not a hive mind. Some are some of the nicest people I have ever met, some I don’t interact with much but write some really beautiful stuff and seem to be good people, but there are others who call themselves meta writers who are just bullies, who mock and harass anyone who disagrees with their opinion. Do NOT lump us all into the same boat.

Why any meta writers would call you a terf or a fascist without a good reason is beyond me. I don’t have context here do i? Could you look back over what you said and consider if it sounded terfy? Or fascist? I dunno man I don’t have a say in this, if people have called you out for something you’ve said, maybe look back over what you said and try to see it from their angle? Especially if it was transphobic.

A general rule of thumb for interacting with any fandom:

Ship and let Ship - in other words, don’t judge people on the pairings they like, even if they are problematic, so long as those pairings are well tagged and labelled so people can block as necessary.

Your kink is not my kink - Don’t kink shame people. If people wanna write really fucked up shit, that’s their right. Again, so long as it is all tagged and clearly labelled with content warnings, then there shouldn’t be a problem. It’s not on you to psychoanalyse people for their reasons for being into twisted things. Some people may genuinely be abuse survivors who are using it as a coping mechanism. You don’t know.

The Archive is a fandom holy place - it is protected. It is adored. Do not attack it or you will feel the wrath of 100 different fandoms coming at you. The archive is free from censorship, free from corporate manipulation, free from outside sources trying to mess with it. The archive belongs to US.

Just generally don’t be an asshole. Fandoms tend to attract people who are different from the general norms of society. We were the nerds and losers in school, the queer kids, the ones struggling with MHI. We all have a lot of shit and are all just trying to navigate our way through life via our passions. Don’t shit on peoples passions. You’ll come across a load of people who disagree with you, and occassionally you might be unfortunate enough to come across actual bullies. But most of the time, it won’t take much to rub someone the wrong way because everyone in these spaces tends to be at least kind of emotional, and attached to their passions. So you really do have to be polite. I can’t even tell you how many people in this fandom hate me - some to the point of obsession and slander. I’ve got a block list a mile long and continue to add people to it. There are posts out there with my name and screenshots from my SM spreading lies and hate about me, encouraging people to laugh at me and accusing me of doing things that I have never had the time or the energy to do. Shit happens. Don’t be those people, and you’re golden.

Superwiki is well known by SPN writers for being a bible of information for the show. The writers have previously confirmed that they refer to the SuperWiki when wanting quick research for their episodes. Yes, Bobo named a character after the person who runs the wiki, but I doubt Bobo is aware of how problematic that person is. The name was just in honour of someone who put a lot of work into building the wiki, hell, even I use the wiki! But I certainly don’t support any of Jules personal views. Don’t read into things like that. It never means what you think.

The thirsty women part I would have agreed with back 6 years ago. But they have adapted with us now. We are no longer Becky in season 4. We became Charlie remember? And after that we became intelligent teenagers wanted to tell an exciting story. If they thought destiel shippers were all about the hot guys banging, they certainly wouldn’t have made the love story canon, and they did that. Remember? Cas confessed his love for Dean, and it was the most beautiful, touching, heartfelt moment in the entire series. They did that. Not because they wanted us to objectify the actors, but because they knew how much that love story meant to us. Unfortunately, the network had other ideas for the actual finale. But that doesn’t take away the writers intentions up to that point. So please don’t erase what they worked for.

Ultimately I’m not sure what point you were trying to make with this ask, but this post is I suppose my very long way of saying you are wrong.

A lot of your justification for pro shipping seems to hinge on the argument that “teens know what they’re doing and know that people on the internet lie, especially if they have grown up on the internet”. This is very minimizing, invalidating and victim-blaming towards the swathes of teens and children who are targeted by online groomers specifically because they do not understand social cues and the concept of people hiding their true intentions for personal gain. These are mostly autistic children, children with undiagnosed mental issues such as bpd or children who have experienced trauma like parental abuse that has stunted their emotional development. So in my opinion, a huge portion of your argument is ableist. Please try to remember that some children and teens are incapable of protecting themselves as well as others through no fault of their own, and the solution to that shouldn’t be “well get off the internet then, you clearly can’t handle it and nobody is going to curate your experience for you”. I’m genuinely not saying this to try to “own” you or imply that you’re an evil person, it’s just something that I believe you haven’t thought about and that I think is important to note.

You’re talking to a mentally ill autistic person. You’re talking to an autistic person who came to the internet with zero prior knowledge when it was still completely unregulated and had zero safety features like blocking, tags, and warnings.

I managed. Loads of people managed. You know how? By the very simple social contract of “don’t like, don’t read”. If we lied about our age, we knew that this might have unpleasant consequences. If you choose to engage in behaviour that’s damaging to you, that’s on you. Neurodivergency or not. Moving about on the internet requires a certain understanding of risk, personal boundaries, and acceptance of consequences. If you don’t have that, you should not be on the internet. End of discussion.

That’s not victim blaming, that’s common sense. If you’re on the internet, especially on a site with complete anonymity like tumblr, you gotta expect people who are not exactly well-meaning, and your best defense isn’t someone shouting “death to all pedos” in a post or five, it’s knowing how to recognise a predator and how to get away from them. It’s not about assigning blame, it’s about practically keeping kids safe in adult spaces on the internet.

And online fandom is an adult space. It was built by adults for adults. Teenagers are welcome to parts of it, but not to all of it. I have no idea where that little factoid got lost. Adults in fandom should not have to censor themselves for the sake of little shits who don’t respect personal boundaries like “if you’re a minor DNI” - no, that’s not just people “covering their asses”, it’s a boundary. Stick to the PG stuff, please. Don't lie about your age to people. if you meet another teen online, ask for a facetime before meeting them. And even then don’t go to the meeting place without a trusted adult. Because sometimes teenagers are used as lures by predators. If someone shares sexually explicit stuff with you or asks you sexually loaded questions, run. Take screenshots and share those with mods and/or a trusted adult - this especially goes for discord servers. People can’t get rid of predators in their midst if they don’t know who the predators are. “You’re so mature for your age” and other compliments in that vein are a major Red Flag. 

No, not every adult on the internet wants to hurt you, but some do, and that’s the sad truth. But you are not defenseless, and no matter what kind of fucked up shit someone may or may not write as fiction - most people, the vast majority of people, would never condone harming a real kid.

one thing i want to clearly lay out at the start is that i firmly believe that having access to your own sexuality and being able to explore it is a human need, and it’s one that is systemically denied to children under the guise of ‘protecting’ them but - protecting them from what? predators? we’re not doing a good job of that anyway. insisting that children aren’t capable of sexuality is wrong. that doesn’t mean they should have sexual interactions with adults, or even with other children. we all develop at different rates, and as such have different needs. some of us don’t feel the need to explore sex and kink, but those of us that do should have the resources to do so safely.

i’m drawing on my own experiences here. i discovered other people’s sexuality at the age of about 8, and began exploring my own soon after. without going into much detail - the fact is that my sexuality did not develop along ‘normal’ lines or in ‘normal’ directions, and that was a source of shame for me for a long time. but i was also shielded from the worst of the shame by a confluence of factors like parents that were apathetic about my internet usage, a certain natural tendency to resent being shamed, and an inclination to furiously hide these parts of myself.

there’s no doubt in my mind that seeing other people’s reactions to the things i was into would have ruined me emotionally and probably led to me being abused. the fact is that it didn’t happen like that, and i developed my own sense of my sexual preferences and boundaries all by myself by the time i was 15 or 16 - which is when i entered fandom spaces as more than an observer, and was immediately hit with other people’s baggage about minors being sexual (even on our own terms). that baggage caused me more harm than anything else.

i’m using this to illustrate a point; we deny children this natural growth / evolution / self-discovery, and in doing so handicap us for life. sexuality doesn’t magically appear at the age of 18 (or 21). it’s always there in some form or another. denying its existence and forcing children with sexual thoughts into deep closets of shame and self-loathing ensures that

1. they will latch onto the first person/place that gives them an outlet 2. the only people willing to engage sexually with children are people already willing to commit unethical acts, and therefore more likely to be predators 3. they will have nowhere to go after this happens except further into shame and victim-blaming.

and we can keep saying ‘okay but it’s not the job of adults in nsfw spaces who tag their shit to take care of children on the internet - parents/schools should do it instead’ but homes and schools are the primary institutions of child abuse. this in itself is an enormously compelling reason to stop retreating to the lazy argument of ‘parents need to watch what their children are doing online’ like yeah sure you can want that if you want kids dead. like it’s not Your Responsibility but the eagerness with which people wash their hands of it is fucking depressing. no one has to have the conversation but people get mad when anyone does, and it’s honestly a mess. 

and yeah, the internet’s a bad place to get your learning from, but that’s not a permanent state of affairs. the internet is a much more level playing field. everyone has access to the same moderation tools, even if most of those tools suck (newsflash! they don’t have to suck!) and though power imbalances exist online as they do in real life, they’re not quite so unavoidable as, for example, someone who can control whether you go to the bathroom.

the discussion of how to create better moderation tools online benefits all of us, not just children. it’s a good one to have, and it would be nice if we [as people who care about not censoring fiction] didn’t go to such lengths to censor actual children speaking about problems which affect them. you don’t have to listen to antis. there are plenty of pro-ship minors, who are regularly fucked over by the adultism running rampant in pro-shipping spaces.

but this discussion will go nowhere if we don’t respect the right of children to have some say in what they can and can’t handle seeing. there are some boundaries you can set, but ultimately you can’t control everything, and it feels like high time to loop minors into the conversation of how to deal with censorship because this is an issue that affects them perhaps more than anyone.

i am leaving a lot of things out because it’s late and i should sleep and it was hard enough to gather my thoughts to this degree, but i hope this clarified my point somewhat!

(Because how else are you supposed to process your emotions, much less heal?) But if your definition of “talking about your eating disorder” consists of glorifying symptoms that you know could trigger another person, then you’ve crossed the boundary of expressing yourself and entered pro ana territory. 

You still have freedom of speech, so you still have the right to post pro ana, by all means. But it hurts people in the process, and it’s against tumblr’s policies, so be prepared for whatever consequences you might face if you keep going in that direction. 

Just stop looking up pro ed content.

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve avoided doing so and still found pro ed content on tumblr.

Even if you simply wanted to talk about your eating disorder and browse the tags related to the affliction you’re suffering from, you’ll end up finding a buttload of people glamorizing your eating disorder, expressing how great it is to starve/purge/engage in behaviors and how great weight loss is at any cost and how it will get you everything you want in life... When no one asked, and in the cases where someone does ask, the decent thing to do is not give them tips on how to hurt themselves.

I don’t want to see recovery-related posts because the idea of recovery can be triggering to me. Pro ana understands me where I’m at.

I put this here because it was exactly how I felt for years.

(Story time. There’s a tl;dr at the bottom.)

I was in a place where I weight restored out of fear and had no real resources, so my body no longer “reflected” my anorexic mindset. The people who were supposed to care about me refused to take my eating disorder seriously (after that especially) and told me some really triggering shit. (In fact, they were the ones who caused my eating disorder, but I digress.) 

That was what turned me off to the idea of recovery completely. I needed to get “sicker” first. I couldn’t forgive myself for weight restoring. Being a physically recovered anorexic with a sick mind, and no will to actually let go of the ED, is a horrible place to be in. And as a society, we don’t talk about that nearly enough. Media doesn’t help with its portrayal of eating disorders as simply a matter of weight loss that is fixed by weight restoration. I felt completely alone and my triggers got worse as I continued managing my symptoms for years, never believing that I was ever sick enough. 

Because of the abusive environment I lived in, I developed PTSD from weight restoring. 

“Recovery” was what triggered me, because all I could associate with it was weight restoration. Pro ana spoke to me. Pro ana was triggering, yes, but at least it understood me on my level. 

When I discovered the anti pro ana community,  though, something clicked. It often consisted of people who had eating disorders themselves and opposed the promotion of them, specifically because they knew what it was like. Because they didn’t want anyone else to experience the pain of an ED or be pushed further into their struggle. In fact many of these people used to be pro ana bloggers themselves. They pointed out the BS logic in many of the pro ana posts they came across. Guess what? APAC is against the use of before and after photos to illustrate ED recovery, because we all already know that it can’t be measured by a person’s looks or their weight. An APAC post disucssing this is what actually helped me discover APAC in the first place! I was like, “FINALLY”

I used to think pro ana bloggers were the ones who were sicker than everyone else, but it turns out, a lot of them were chasing after the idea of having an ed, which was why they glorified it or viewed it as a diet instead of warning people of its dangers.

I stopped looking up pro ana as a way to trigger myself. Still, I wasn’t sold on recovery and wouldn’t be for a while. 

I finally sought help after 8 years of refusing to get help because someone triggered me so badly that I couldn’t take it anymore. It was reminiscent of what I’d experience in my PTSD nightmares. I had reached rock bottom a long time ago. 8 years of refusing to get help can take a toll on your mindset, and your body, too. But the damage it does to your mind alone is bad enough. I really needed help. I needed it from the beginning. I guess I could say I was lucky because i didn’t discover pro ana until after I developed my eating disorder. I don’t even want to think of the damage it would have caused if I had discovered it before, or during its development. 

If you don’t want to recover, that’s okay. The beauty of recovery is that it’s your choice. Recovery means different things to different people, and you’re in control of whether you’re ready for that or not. 

The anti pro ana community may be in favor of recovery, but we’re not trying to push it on anyone who isn’t ready.

The problem is, you might never be ready. There will never come a point where your restrictive eating disorder will go, “okay, you’ve done enough here. I’m satisfied.” It will push you to your death, or if not death, years of misery and wasted opportunities. 

That’s hard enough to deal with as it is. You don’t need an incentive to get sicker. People don’t realize how sick they are until they do enough work in recovery. I can’t convince you you’re sick enough. What I can do is encourage you to seek out resources that could aid you or at least not make you sicker. 

And in the meantime, I will continue to fight against the pro ana movement as much as I can. I’m still in recovery and there’s a lot of work left to do. This might even involve staying away from APAC. If it does, so be it, but for now, it doesn’t and I’m here. 

TLDR; I found the idea of recovery triggering for years (and still do to some extent) because I weight restored without mentally recovering and it was an incredibly invalidating experience. Therefore pro ana content spoke to me on my level, because there were few to no resources that acknowledged how it felt to essentially be a dry drunk in terms of anorexia. But the anti pro ana community validated that without encouraging disordered thoughts, and pro ana no longer served its purpose for me. The anti pro ana community supports recovery but understands that recovery is a choice you make on your own timetable. But your eating disorder will blind you to how sick you are until you get enough help, and you will never be ready to recover if you listen to your ED. It’s important to avoid worsening your eating disorder if you’re not ready yet, or at the very least, avoid triggering other people if you are not willing to do that yet.

This was a SUPER FUN EPISODE! I couldn’t really tell where they were going and I LOVED EVERY SECOND OF IT! I wish we had gotten Huey in some wrestling gear but maybe next time. I like the message that doing the right thing isn’t always popular but I kind of feel like Dewey getting the crowd on his side muddled the message somewhat. Poor Dewey needs therapy or something so he doesn’t feel like he needs CONSTANT approval. Again, he’s 11 YEARS OLD and shouldn’t be put into such a serious position. LP was VIP this episode.
