New interview by hunskate with our beloved Ivett, in where she talks about her new training enviroment, new programs and other personal stuff. Translation by @fanpower98, please don’t repost!
Ivett Tóth successfully passed her final exams so now she can concentrate on training with full power. Our olympic figure skater can start the new season with a new SEAT and supported by MOL*, after two weeks resting she started training again. We looked back to last season with her and we talked about her new programs, plans and goals.
[*N/T: MOL is a famous hungarian oil and gas company]
Congratulations on your graduation! There was a fully scheduled year behind you. How did you get by?
Thank you, I’m happy I could finally check this off. In the olympic season, when I trained in Switzerland, the school took a backseat, I couldn’t travel back home for the exams so I had to do grade 12 again. It was hard but it affected me on a positive way, where something also got my attention beside skating and didn’t overthink while training. In the last weeks I spent less time on the ice because of the exams, I usually had one practise a day. I could get to work again after the written [exams] then Vasas had an outage where, without ice, meant us a two weeks break. In the meantime I got beyond the oral [exams] so now the intensive preparation can start.
You started the last season with the Italian and the Finnish challengers. How did you evaluate your performance there?
I’m happy I started the season earlier like in the previous seasons because it made me feel calmer, I didn’t had to rush or act in haste to go through the road I planned. Thanks to a good short program, I could do my free in the best group at Lombardia Trophy and I got 7th place overall, so I got ranking points with that. At Finlandia Trophy I did a lot of stupid mistakes so I slipped really down, in the end I didn’t need that much to reach the settled goal. I learned from both competitions.
Then you had two competitions at home: you had the lead at the Halloween Cup after the short program, but you got bronze at the end, at Christmas Cup you were able to keep the first place and you won with high scores. Is the pressure bigger if you have to compete at home?
I always have some nervousness in me but it rather gives me safety when I can compete at home. Moreover they organized the Halloween Cup in Vasas where I practice day by day and since I live close to the rink I just walked to the competition. This is why it was special to me, because it was the first time I competed there. However I already got a lot of experience in the Gyakorló Jégcsarnok (Practice Rink), Christmas Cup went better because it was more than one month later and I could get in shape until then. Actually we should keep out where we compete but of course we know that at home there are more familiar faces, there are more hungarian fans in the spectators’ area which affects me in a positive way on stressful situations.
Yet before Christmas Cup you could be glad for a foreign win: you got a gold medal in November in Riga at Volvo Open Cup. How do you recall that competition?
I did my short program for the first time in the season where, when I got off the ice, I was satisfied with my performance. The free wasn’t perfect, though. But I accomplished it better than in the previous competitions. There was this feeling where for the first time I felt I was able to show for what we worked so hard that I started to find myself. It was a little milestone for me from which we could build.
However at Four National Competitions, which is also the Nationals, you didn’t do well. How did you prepare after that to the European Championships?
I’m a very nervous type of person, I have to consciously pay attention to relax even if the training went very well. Although the competition was here in [Buda]Pest and I felt the fans’ support, I couldn’t relax for some reason. I didn’t perform well but at least my performance was enough to not to have to participate in another sorting competition so I could concentrate on the training with my nerves. I knew if I keep calm and only follow my coaches advices, we can reach our goal.
This goal was to be in the top ten but at the end you managed to get the 13th place from last year. You had some trouble with the double Axel in both programs but you got an ISU season’s personal best for the free skate. You could perform before a big crowd, how did you live it through?
I was very surprised that so much people came, I didn’t think figure skating or any other ice sport is that famous in Belarus. The audience encouraged all competitors, clapped through the programs, it had the feeling like the stands were full with asian fans. I still haven’t found whys for that two double Axels, maybe some short circuit [I can’t remember the word we use in english fs fandom]. True, I haven’t got into the top ten but I feel like I managed to get better at both programs compared to last year and I think back with with good feelings to Minsk EC. Particularly to the free, I slapped into the air at the end, I felt like I did my best this time. When I looked into my coaches’ eyes, that said everything, I knew they are proud of me. Through that one year together Zsófi and Zoli [Zsófia Tokaji-Kulcsár, Zoltán Tóth] became extremely important persons in my life, there isn’t bigger pleasure than the fact I could bring them joy. These are the unforgettable memories what drives us forward in gray weekdays and in trainings and I hope we can live through more moments like this together.
After your fifth European Championships came your fifth World Championship where unfortunately you couldn’t perform your free skate. What was in you when you got off the ice and got your scores?
Between EC and Worlds I would’ve had an another competition but I got sick and I rested so much that my muscles got down so I had to concentrate on getting back to my condition instead of competing. I did succeed on it quite well but I felt the lack of the competitions’ atmosphere at Worlds. I would have liked to finish the season with a good performance but the missed jump and the stumble on the step sequence cost a lot. That hurt more that getting in the free depended on these .3 tenths but you also have to know how to handle this. With a harder heart we tried to take the opportunity that we were in Japan: we went to sightseeing in Tokyo, watched almost all the competitions and I could learn a lot from the others’ performances. We enjoyed the banquet very much and then when we came home I had to start to prepare to my final exams so I couldn’t stay dwelling on for long what happened there.
If you had to describe your season with some words, what would you say?
Maybe that that I did everything full of love and now somehow every training and every competition went easier than last year. Because I started to work with new coaches it was also a very good experience. A lot of times I couldn’t bring it out of myself during competitions what I did at practices but they always stood by me and helped me.
In May the selected ones could work with Alexandr Abt, who you could met at the competition in Riga. What gave you these four days?
He had great results as a figure skater and I already knew him by sight because I have competed many times with one of his Swiss student. Although it’s not possible to do miracles in four days he did a very good job with us, we learned a lot from him and we could get to know a fantastic person by him. We paid attention to steps, spins and also jumps, we mostly did exercises to move us out from the comfort zone and try other steps into the elements. We benefit from this a lot at practices and it’s sure I’ll build some little things into my programs from those what he showed us.
Since you already mentioned your programs: would you reveal what music did you chose for next season, what style will you come out with [this time]?
It’s important to me to stay interesting so I’m showing a new side of me again in my short program: I’ll skate to swing. It has a plenty of challenges in it but I enjoy it very much. It’s choreographed by Nóra Hoffmann and my coaches, in regards of the costume and make up still no decisions were made [T/N: the interview was in July so it’s probably done by now]. Because we performed the short many times I definitely wanted to change it so neither the judges and neither the fans would get bored. However I kept the free because I loved it and I feel I can make a lot more out of it. I haven’t had the opportunity to work with Benoit this time but we are in contact and I hope next year we can continue our work together.
What are your main goals for next season? In what would you want to evolve the most?
My main goal is to have a more balanced season, to get in shape earlier and to increase the number of my triple jumps. In the short program I would like to make my triple-triple more difficult, we will see which one is the best during practices. To the free I would like to put back the Flip, what was in it at some competitions in autumn but then we took it out. Besides this we are also working on them [the programs] performance-wise a lot and since my short was choreographed here at home and I have performed the free for a year I can practice them better.
Although you got two weeks resting, for you half of it was about studying. Do you still have the opportunity to go on a holiday to really get relaxed?
We always go somewhere with family but it won’t come together this year. I’ll have some free weekends but frankly, now I don’t feel like I need some rest. I couldn’t do intense training because of exams and I really missed the [physical] stress, I couldn’t wait to continue the practices. I really enjoy the work, I can absolutely give myself to the music we’ve found for the short and I also want to level up my free program. Based on all of what we went through last season with my coaches, I dare to say that there is “kraft”* in our collaboration and we still can show a lot of things to the audience.
I feel that I found my place.
*[T/N: “kraft” means “strength/force and Ivett used this word and I wanted to keep it. We use a lot of hungarized german words.]

In Honor of The News / Also I need to start posting stuff for this
Here’s some stuff for my long and involved Overwatch fanfic about Gabe’s family I’ve been working on for like four months now?
Read under the cut!! 2k words, it’s an interview so it reads pretty quickly | read on ao3
NPR Broadcast, 14 June 2076
Miranda Jennings, NPR News: We’re now sending it over to Karley Pierce, with our special miniseries about the remains of Overwatch five years later.
Karley (Narration): It’s been five years since the Swiss HQ was destroyed in a terrorist attack and the UN shut Overwatch down for good. And while some are writing articles about what could be happening with the possible survivors of the attack, we wanted to cut away the conjecture and look at the lives of survivors we know. Over the next two weeks, I will be interviewing those people whose lives were affected most, as well as possibly some of the people behind the decisions made by the often controversial organization.
My first interviewees are none other than Penelope and Julia Reyes, wife and daughter to one of the most powerful - and some would say corrupt - men in the world, at one time. But the picture they created, both of Commander Reyes and the life they led together, is something very different than the public ever heard.
Penelope: With us, you know, it was very different. He could be - well, difficult - but he wasn’t what you’d see in the tabloids. Complicated, sure, but a genuinely good man.
Karley (Narration): We’re sitting at the marble counter in Penelope’s Central Park-bordering apartment. It’s Saturday, Penelope is finished with her grading for the moment. In the background, Julia is putting the finishing touches on a watercolor piece she is entering in a school contest. A typical familial scene, but there’s a weight in the home that I felt upon crossing the threshold.
Penelope: That kind of thing, it really doesn’t leave you. It’s not that I haven’t tried to pick up the pieces, I just - It’s a heavy loss, not just a husband, but friends, coworkers. A job. With the attack, I lost a huge piece of my life. I’d been there for almost twenty-five years, and then I was just left, alone, an eleven-year-old to take care of, no job. I felt lost.
Karley: What did you do afterward?
Penelope: We did what we could. Julia finished the grade, I signed her up for school and counseling. I got a job at Laguardia, so I could start making my own money again. But - it’s a process, you know, it’s not something that happens overnight. And I miss him every day.
Karley: He was at the center of a lot of controversy and intrigue in the later years of Overwatch, but you were out of all of it - there’s a video of you -
Penelope: Right, that was during the trial.
Karley: May I ask why you didn’t get involved?
Penelope: It was our private life. I didn’t want that out in the open. I know that the trial was about something he did publicly, but it was tabloids asking if we were divorcing, if I knew anything about what he was planning, was he involved with Doctor O’Deorain, all that. I had no desire to answer any of their questions, so I took myself out of the equation.
Karley (Narration): For her part, Penelope says she never stopped loving him.
Penelope: Even through the worst of it, I still loved him. It maybe took some convincing, but I did. I do.
Karley: And what of the allegations he was in league with Talon? According to -
Penelope: I know what they said. No, he never was, nor were the facts of that report straight. Jack and Gabe may have been at each other’s throats by the end, but neither one would risk the lives of friends and family for their petty feud. I think the picture painted is one of Jack trying to keep Overwatch afloat and Gabe trying to undermine him at every turn, but it wasn’t like that. Petras was all over everything after Blackwatch was revealed, and Gabe wanted freedom, yes, but he felt the organization wasn’t doing enough. He’s the reason we went into King’s Row, you know.
Karley: Really?
Penelope: Yes. I remember when we went, months before the orders were given. He genuinely cared about what was going on there, the destruction. I think he saw another Crisis starting. And having gone through one before, we were both… He knew how to force Jack’s hand. So he did.
Karley: So a freedom fighter, not a terrorist.
Penelope: Tired, I would say.
Karley: Do you think your relationship affected how things worked in Overwatch? I mean, were he alone, would he have done what he did?
Penelope: I don’t know. He was headstrong, to say the least. I don’t think I ever really stopped him from doing something he thought needed to be done. But I think - Before we knew each other well, according to people who knew him better, he was pretty… reckless. I think after we were married, and certainly after Julia, he became less so. More concerned with how his recklessness would affect us, back at home. But he still - I mean, Julia was nine when he killed Antonio, so he was still himself, even after us.
Karley: I know you haven’t answered questions about Venice in the past, but I’d like to ask…
Penelope: There were other factors involved. He was right, Antonio wouldn’t have stood trial for anything he’d done. Gabe did what he thought was right. But there was a lot more besides that, and that - we got through it eventually.
Karley: Can I ask what your relationship was like? Not to barge into your private lives, but there’s the Commander Reyes we all heard about, but you knew a different side of him. In our conversation so far, he seems a lot less brash and rebellious than the man I thought I knew.
Penelope: No, no, he was still brash and rebellious, at least, he could be. I - Hm. Well, for example, it took us two years to start dating. We just kept dancing around the subject; I’m sure it was annoying as hell to live through. But that’s the kind of man he could be, too. He told me once, we were actually here, looking at venues for the wedding, he told me that he didn’t think I would have been interested in him, given I was a music theory major and he was a soldier. Can you believe! He walks around looking like that and he thought I wouldn’t be interested.
Karley: Were you one of those women during the Crisis?
Penelope: Oh, God, yes. Not outwardly, of course, I’m too reserved, but I may or may not have bought the TIME magazine he was on the cover of.
Karley: Just because he was on the cover?
Penelope: (laughing) Yes, of course! You’ve seen it, I’m sure. He looked - I mean, let’s just say I was two parts happy and two parts very nervous to be his assistant. Anyway, our relationship.
Karley: Right.
Penelope: He was, well, he was tender with me. With a lot of people, honestly. You were saying, there’s this picture that’s in people’s minds of what he must have been like, all gruff and overbearing and domineering. He wasn’t. He was the man who cried at his best friend’s wedding, who wanted to name his daughter Grace because the concept of divine forgiveness was his favorite part of religion, who stress baked and made our Halloween costumes. He bought me a piano, because I was sad and I missed playing. He and Angela - Doctor Ziegler - would talk horror films while she was working on her Valkyrie suit, just to keep her company. Of course, he was a person and therefore had faults, he could be so aggravating sometimes, but… you know, he was a good man. He really, really was. And it pains me to know that so many people will look at his life’s work and not see the man behind it.
Karley (Narration): I remember when Julia Reyes was born - it was everywhere when I was starting college. Fifteen years later, she’s an amateur artist, ceramicist, and a vivacious girl, despite the traumas of her past.
Julia: This is one I entered in the New York Youth Modern Art Exhibition. I didn’t win anything, but like, I’m proud as hell to have been included.
Karley (Narration): The painting in question is a still-life of a bouquet of half-dried lilies and roses. The paint is thick and expressive, shades of blues and reds staccatoed with bright flashes of neon pink. She directs me to a table in her studio filled with plates, bowls, mugs, and other assorted ceramic creations.
Julia: This is all my newer stuff.
Karley: You’re really good! These plates look like something I’d buy downtown or something.
Julia: Thanks! I really enjoy it, unfortunately for my mother.
Karley (Narration): There is no denying that Penelope and Julia are two very different women. Penelope is clean, hair in a well-kept updo, dressed in an expensive white blouse and dark grey slacks, a Cartier watch on her wrist. Julia, on the other hand, has her hair in a loose ponytail, paint and clay spattered on her jeans and face, wearing a T-shirt for a band that was old when she was born.
Julia: Dad loved Weezer. He grew up in California, so like, I think he had to.
Karley: What do you remember about him?
Julia: A lot, I mean, I was eleven when he died. I remember - like, it’s funny, I was actually just learning about this in my current events class, but I do remember the trial and everything, after he shot that Antonio guy out a window? Mostly I remember that Mom and I moved back here, and they weren’t talking for, like, ever. But that’s not - like, that’s not my dad. Not like I knew him anyway.
Karley: That’s the sense I’m getting from you and your mother. We as a public really only saw one part of him.
Julia: Oh, yeah. Yeah, like, he did shoot a guy out a window, but he was also - I mean, he was my dad. And he was a super good one, from what I remember. Like, he would read me stories at night and stuff. Mom told me, like, he was the one who got me the tutor. Mom wanted to send me to France for school, but he wouldn’t let her, so I got my tutor instead. And I mean, looking back now, I must have had full run of the base, because I doubt anyone would have told him, ‘Hey, get your daughter out of here.’
Karley: That’s right, you grew up on the base.
Julia: Yep. What you were saying before, I mean, there was a lot of focus on all the bad shit he did. And I’m not saying he didn’t do it, I’m just saying that if people had been around him, they would have seen a guy who, like, loved his kids and wife and watched the sunrise. He was definitely not the cold-blooded murderer everyone portrays him to be.
Karley: Do you think he could have been?
Julia: Like, in his heart of hearts, he was actually just a sociopath?
Karley: Something like that.
Julia: Nah. Look, Jack Morrison killed people too. I love him a lot, he was like an uncle to me, but he did. But no one talks about him the way they talk about my dad. Dad had a hard job. He was the commander of a stealth unit, he was going against a terrorist organization, he was sick, like, he had a lot going on.
Karley: Sick?
Julia: Something they did in the SEP, yeah. I was super young, I don’t remember at all, but I know he was.
Karley: So there’s no chance he was part of Talon.
Julia: He almost got fired trying to take them out. There’s no chance.
Karley (Narration): This seemed to be the consensus between the women - Gabriel Reyes, to the two people who likely knew him best, was not a secret agent for the international terrorist organization known as Talon. I wanted to know what else in that report might have been misunderstood, so I headed off to Switzerland to speak to another woman mentioned in the report. Tomorrow, my interview with Dr. Angela Ziegler.

Tips for starting sixth form
Okay so I have survived my first year of A Levels and sixth form! These are the tips I would give to upcoming Year 11s. Enjoy :)
1) the step up
I’m not gonna lie - there is a big step up from GCSE to A Level, both in terms of the difficulty of what you are learning, and the workload you have to manage. But it’s not as bad as you might think, as long as you are prepared.
It’s very common for people to find that their grades slip in the first term, so don’t freak out if that happens! I got an E in one of my first Maths topic tests aha. Also, teachers are really understanding at the start of the year because they know people are adjusting, so they won’t get angry if you’re struggling. They’re really supportive and helpful.
2) organisation
Over the summer, make sure you get all the supplies you’ll need. I would suggest 2 options (but feel free to do whatever is best for you, whether it be one of these or not). Either:
write notes in exercise books and have a small folder for each subject (for handouts etc)
write notes on loose leaf paper, and then file them into arch lever folders
I chose the second option, but it really doesn’t matter what you do as long as you have a system.
VERY IMPORTANT: I recommend printing a copy of your specification to go in each subject folder. You need to be able to keep track of the content you are covering in lessons throughout the year, so I use it as a checklist to make sure I’ve covered everything.
3) notes
It took me a while to figure out what the best note-taking process was for me. I think the process I ended up with is great (even if sometimes I’m lazy and don’t stick to it):
STAGE 1: pre-reading
I don’t always have time for this stage because life can be hectic! But I’d really recommend reading the textbook pages and getting an overview of the topic before the lesson. It’s incredible what a difference it makes, and it means you can focus on trying to understand the more difficult concepts
STAGE 2: class notes
During the lesson I will take some rough notes in a notebook, just jotting down any key points that my teacher says. I don’t take them from the textbook because in my opinion that’s a waste of lesson time
STAGE 3: final rewritten notes
After the lesson, either during my free periods or at home, I will re-write my notes. I use a mixture of the following resources: my class notes, the textbook, revision guides, & any PowerPoint slides that are available. For bio & chem I will also often watch a YouTube video on the topic, usually from Khan Academy or E Rintoul.
[Of course, this is just my method of note-taking! Study in the way that is most effective for you.]
4) free periods
This year, about 1/3 of my timetable was made up of free periods, and next year it will be more as I’m dropping English Lit. It is absolutely vital that you make good use of this time. For each A Level subject, it is estimated that you should be doing 5 hours of independent study a week, and a lot of this you can do in your frees.
I’m not saying you can never have a chat with your friends during frees (I know I definitely do), but that should be the exception and not the norm. Make good habits from the start of the year, and be productive in your free periods. It doesn’t always have to be studying! Here are some suggestions of productive things to do in your free periods:
do your pre-reading, notes or homework
watch some academic YouTube videos
research university courses / apprenticeships
email professionals about potential work experience
book open days
read (around the subject or just for pleasure)
do some exercise (we have a leisure centre attached to our school so I sometimes go for a swim; some people I know go to the gym together)
5) revision
Start early by using spaced review. This means revisiting topics you have covered in lessons several times; re-writing your notes comes in handy here!
Tumblr media
Secondly, take topic tests and mocks seriously. Revise for them properly and then when you come to actual exams, you will have already revised the content a few times over.
6) teachers
Talk to them!! They teach the subject because they love it - they’ll be happy to answer any questions you have, or explain things to you if you’re struggling. It’s not like GCSE where you can memorise a revision guide and get away with it - you really have to understand the content at A Level, and teachers are your best resource.
Show enthusiasm! You should (hopefully) be studying the subject because you like it, so don’t be afraid to show your interest. It will also make a really good impression to your teachers, who ultimately will be writing your reference & giving your predicted grades. Having a good attitude will go a long way; even if you mess up a few exams they will be more likely to view you favourably.
7) volunteering
At the start of the year, if your sixth form is anything like mine, you will be bombarded with opportunities to volunteer in school, e.g. mentoring younger students, becoming a prefect. It’s great to take up at least one of these activities and - more importantly - stick with it. It is commitment and dedication that will impress, rather than a massive range of things done half-heartedly.
For example, I’ve been volunteering at a care home for people with Alzheimer’s and dementia for nearly 2 years, something that when I’ve had interviews has been picked up on. But it’s not just about making you look good - I really think volunteering is rewarding and worthwhile. I know it’s definitely helped me grow as a person.
8) part-time jobs
I can totally understand why many sixth formers work part-time. The money is much needed, and it’s also great experience to put on your CV.
However, a line must be drawn when your job is affecting your studies. Most sixth forms will have a guideline, but in general I would say if your work is asking you to do more than 2-3 shifts a week on a regular basis, it’s too much.
Personally, I didn’t have a job this year, & I still found it hard at times to juggle everything with my A Levels. I’ve found a compromise this year, & I’ve just gotten a waitressing job with a zero hours contract. This is perfect for me as I can sign up for events as and when I feel I can do it.
Ultimately, it’s a very personal decision about how much you can manage. If you are considering applying to study a competitive course such as Medicine, that requires really high grades, it might be worth reading this by @dxmedstudent.
9) socialising
The most important thing with socialising is simply: know when to and when not to. It is absolutely fine to meet up with friends and go to parties - in fact, you definitely should do because it’s a great way to have fun and relieve stress (more on that later). But sometimes your studies have to come first. If your friend is having a party the night before a test, maybe reconsider.
Don’t let anyone pressure you, and make informed decisions for yourself.
10) stress relief
A Levels can be really stressful at times, and the absolute best thing you can do for yourself is talk to people: friends, family, or just writing in a journal - get it off your chest before it builds up and causes you anxiety.
Do extra-curriculars like music or sports, because sometimes you need a distraction to take your mind off school. I play the piano, and recently stopped doing grades as it was causing me unnecessary stress. Now I play for pleasure and relaxation, and I love it so much. Also, READ! Reading is the single best way to get lost in another world and relax (in my opinion at least).
Post-18 pathways
start thinking and researching your options early
if you want to do an apprenticeship, applications open all throughout the year, so be looking out for them!
tell people what you’re interested in (e.g. head of sixth form, your tutor, careers adviser). The school / college get sent promotions for loads of different courses and summer schools etc so if they know you want to do x, they can tell you about any opportunities that come up
Super-curricular activities
These are the sort of things you want to be writing about in your personal statement. They are evidence of your academic interests, and dedication to the subject you want to study. Here are some examples:
reading beyond the A Level syllabus (I recently read this one on medical ethics)
listening to podcasts (‘inside the ethics committee’ is one I’ve been listening to that was recommended by @muststudy)
following accounts on twitter
joining school societies / clubs that are relevant to your subject
getting some work experience!!
Side note: another thing that looks really great is applying for senior roles in school. I’ve just been appointed deputy head girl on the senior leadership team, and I’m going to include it in my personal statement.
I hope this has been useful! I’ve also done some posts on my A Level subjects (except Biology, but the advice in Chemistry is pretty much the same):
Chemistry
Maths
English Literature

Feel Like You’re Going Out of Your Mind? Consider Your Mind-Set
If you were a manager, what actions would you take to help your subordinates develop a “growth mindset” rather than a “fixed mindset?”
About 13 years ago I made a mistake in a column written for this newspaper. In the hierarchy of errors, it wasn’t a major one, but it was embarrassing.
I said daylight saving time had begun when it actually had just ended. And making matters worse, it was in the opening paragraph. A correction had to be written and affixed to the bottom of the article, where it will remain for as long as the article exists. I was deeply annoyed with myself.
As I sat there a few days later ruminating about the correction and my self-directed anger, I began to wonder why so many of us hate our mistakes so much. While we may be told early in life that mistakes are OK and we can learn from them, we quickly discover the opposite — that we won’t be lauded for messing up, but admonished.
When and why does this change? Is it universal? And how does the way we think about our mistakes affect our ability to be resilient to the ups and downs of life?
My following column examined some of these ideas, and it grew into a book published in 2011, “Better by Mistake: The Unexpected Benefits of Being Wrong.”
As I learned through my research, if we see every mistake as a crisis, every failure as a sign we’re losers, then we avoid taking risks, we become less creative, we even learn less deeply.
But if we’re resilient enough to understand that mistakes are inevitable, that we often make them when we’re trying something that challenges us and that the learning process is (or should be) as important as the final achievement, then we’re far more open and able to accept them.
A major source for my column and for a chapter in the book was Carol Dweck, a professor of psychology at Stanford University and one of the foremost researchers on how we think about mistakes and failure. She laid out her findings in a book published in 2006, “Mindset: The New Psychology of Success.”
Over the years, her ideas have gained wide popularity in the growing field examining how we develop resilience and grit. And more important, they were adopted by numerous teachers and schools with real success.
Her work focuses on mind-sets — that is, how we view our own abilities. She distinguishes between what she termed fixed mind-sets and growth mind-sets. Those with a fixed mind-set don’t believe their abilities, intelligence and personalities can really change and evolve. They see mistakes, challenges and setbacks simply as signs of stupidity or incompetence and give up.
Those with a growth mind-set understand that intelligence and capabilities are malleable. Even if we all won’t become world-class mathematicians, for example, we can get better at math. They are more likely to be resilient in the face of obstacles and failure, seeing them as necessary to becoming better at just about anything.
How do you know which mind-set you have? First, we’re all a mixture of both. But if you agree with the notion that “everyone is a certain kind of person and that there’s not much they can really do to change that,” you’re more of a fixed mind-set sort of person. If you are more likely to agree that “people can substantially change the kind of person they are,” you tend toward the growth mind-set type.
Professor Dweck said that if children, starting as young as possible, were taught about these mind-sets and could genuinely adopt a growth mind-set, then they would become adults who were more willing to experiment even in the face of possible failure, to move out of their comfort zone, because they weren’t so afraid of failing. They will embrace the process of learning, not just the grades or prizes.
The concepts of fixed and growth mind-sets are not limited to education, although that is where most of the research has been done; they have been used in workplaces and in areas like conflict resolution and mental health research.
Professor Dweck’s research caught fire around the world. Her 2014 TED Talk has had almost 11 million views. In 2015, the U.S. Education Department granted almost $2 million to a number of school districts across the country to promote social and emotional skills, including learning about mind-sets. The Organization for Economic Co-Operation and Development found that a growth mind-set was one factor associated with academic resilience internationally.
As the ideas spread, however, critics emerged. Efforts to replicate a few of her studies failed. Some wondered whether Professor Dweck’s ideas on growth and fixed mind-set — and particularly how they were defined and taught — “overpromised and underdelivered,” as a Scientific American article put it.
So, I decided to revisit Professor Dweck — this time virtually — and find out where the issue stood now. How resilient was she feeling in the face of some of these criticisms? Do mind-sets have anything to offer us in this time of great uncertainty and fear?
In an interview from her California home, Professor Dweck said she hesitated to discuss mind-sets a panacea in the current crisis.
“I get at least two podcast invitations per day, and I do not accept any of them,” she said. “I’m not a Covid expert, and I don’t want to seem to be saying when people are sick or losing their jobs, ‘just have a growth mind-set.’”
But she and other mind-set researchers did want to see if they could learn anything during this time that could be useful in the future, and began interviewing teachers and administrators on the front lines.
High school teachers in cities around Texas, including Houston, El Paso and Fort Worth, who had studied in a growth mind-set program, said students with more of that mind-set were able to adapt faster to online learning. And the teachers themselves are using what they learned to guide students; as one teacher said in an Education Week article, he tried to make sure his students were comfortable enough to discuss their struggles “That’s the big thing from growth mind-set. What do you do when you have that struggle? I try to push onto them, ‘you use it as a learning opportunity. You ask questions, you can’t just give up.’”
As far as criticisms of her work, Professor Dweck said it had spurred her to do more and deeper research on mind-sets. But she also acknowledges things change when theory becomes practice.
For example, she and other researchers didn’t anticipate the many nuances that could be lost when practiced in the classroom.
For example, one major part of developing a growth mind-set is focusing on effort, rather than results. But in the classroom, too often that translated into a teacher simply praising a student’s efforts without offering new approaches to solve the problem or overcome the obstacles.
“’Just try hard,’ they would say to the students,” Professor Dweck said. “Well, OK, effort is one of the ways you can develop your abilities, but there are also strategies and support from others. An exhortation to try harder, especially in a culture that believes if you had ability you wouldn’t have to try hard will not be effective.”
Ultimately, effort is “supposed to foster learning,” she said. “It’s not just a consolation prize.”
And then there was the problem that the notion of a fixed mind-set had become so negative that teachers and students were ashamed to admit they had them.
“So, they professed a growth mind-set even when they didn’t fully understand or believe it,” Professor Dweck said.
So, what how should we try to develop a growth mind-set?
Beware of assuming that because something doesn’t come easily, you won’t ever be good at it and then quit. Focus on the process — what you’re learning — rather than the final product.
Just trying the same thing over and over isn’t enough. When you run up against a brick wall, you have to come up with new strategies, skills and input from others to figure out the right approach.
Be aware of what triggers you from a growth to a fixed mind-set — when you feel vulnerable? Anxious? Stressed? When those emotions surface, don’t get annoyed with yourself; just try to bring yourself back to a growth mind-set.
The next big challenge in mind-set research is understanding when and under what circumstances growth mind-set works and how to create skills and opportunities to sustain it. “We call it the next Mount Everest,” Professor Dweck said.
This article, the one you are reading, proved to be a mini-Mount Everest for me. Somehow I couldn’t get it right. My editor offered some helpful comments, but a second try also fell flat. My first thought was “Oh forget it — this just won’t work.” The second thought was an internal wry smile and an acknowledgment that I wasn’t demonstrating much of a growth mind-set. Back to the computer.

Karina Pujols: How Cannabis Helps Deal with Social Phobia, Motherhood and Everyday Triggers

Karina Pujols (@_karieee) is a 28-year-old mother and survivor from Manhattan, New York. In this interview, she shares how weed helps her to heal and cope with lifelong social phobia, depression, anxiety as well as PTSD from sexual assault. We also discuss how she has been impacted by issues of access and affordability, negative stigmas and pharmaceutical alternatives.
Content warning: rape and suicide ideation
What was it like growing up with social phobia?
I’ve been social phobic all my life. Since pre-K, I wouldn’t speak in class. They thought something was wrong with me and held me back twice, even though I did the work. So I was a lot older than other kids, which made me not want to socialize. It still hurts when I walk by that school.
I’d been through a bunch of therapists because of this, but still was only comfortable talking at home, so my mom recorded me secretly in her bra. I heard my own voice over the recording and got traumatized. I felt she betrayed me with my own voice. It took me a long time to communicate over the phone after that.
Fast-forward to junior high, there were three or four other shy people that I felt comfortable with. By freshman year in high school, I was dating someone but we hadn’t made out yet. He forced himself on me when I was pushing him away, and took my virginity. I was 16 going on 17, it was my birthday. I didn’t have sex for three years after that and went through this whole depression throughout high school.
Eleventh grade, I started drinking. It helped me socialize, I was the life of the party but then it got out of control. I would get into fights with my sisters, embarrass myself in front of family members and the whole block, and just wake up in the morning like, what happened? I also did coke in high school, before I smoked weed.
When did you first start smoking weed?
I smoked once in high school but not again until after, in 2010 when I started working and everyone at my job smoked. You’d think I would have started sooner, because in my neighborhood, you’re always gonna see a bunch of guys outside smoking. But I didn’t talk to anyone here until I started buying from them to smoke on my own.
And it was like, wow, I can actually smoke and not lose control. I’m still myself. I would smoke blunts, starting little by little. It made me less anxious and helped with my depression.
But back then you could only get sour or haze. When I smoked sour, it was very strong and I would smoke a lot because I was a beginner and didn’t really know. It made me paranoid, like everybody’s staring at me. So then I smoked haze, which didn’t make me so paranoid.

How did you realize it was helping you as a medicine?
I first started just to try it, and continued because it made me feel good and like I didn’t need to drink. But I didn’t see it as medicine because it was illegal. I started doing research, and also studied Chinese medicine so I started seeing it as an herb, not an illegal drug. I learned how it affected me, calmed my fears and helped me work. I could go smoke on work breaks and be fine, instead of smoking cigarettes, which I used to do to calm me down.
I stopped smoking cigarettes when I got pregnant. But I did do research about pregnant women who smoked weed, and their kids turn out perfectly healthy. During my first trimester, I had so much nausea that I couldn’t eat or drink. So I would roll on hemp paper, take a couple hits and it was just like, finally! But I didn’t smoke in my last trimester, which I’m not sure was a good idea for me – I ended up having high blood pressure and they had to induce me into labor.
My daughter was born in 2013, when I was 24.
When did you start smoking weed again?
I didn’t smoke right after, I didn’t want to get arrested or have her taken away from me. I was going through a lot during that pregnancy, including issues with the father and his addiction. My anxiety and depression came back really hard. When I started smoking again, I could only get sour, which made me even more stressed. I got a lot of throat and ear infections, like I thought I had cancer or something but the doctors couldn’t find anything. It turned out just to be all the negativity that I was internalizing from what everybody was saying about me smoking weed as a mother.
I was also hanging out with the wrong crowd – I had friends who sell so there was a lot going around. At some point I was abusing it, overdoing it way too much. When you smoke the right amounts it helps, but then you smoke too much, and you’ll still feel good but you don’t feel as motivated to get out. Now that I see weed as a positive thing, it doesn’t affect me like that. I don’t even get paranoid at all. It’s amazing how when your perspective on something shifts it affects everything else, too.
Where are you at now?
Less than a year ago, I had to get help because I was way too depressed and my anxiety was getting worse. I’ve been depressed since I was little so I always thought about ending my life but never had a plan. The only thing I knew was the George Washington Bridge. I was scared to walk by that bridge, I was scared my body would jump without me even acknowledging that my body was jumping. I was scared of myself and my decisions, so I went to get help. I went in and they were like, oh yeah, you young mothers come in here all the time, you’ll need somebody to pick up your child because you’ll be here for 24 hours... So I was like, nevermind.
Weeks later, I went to a psychiatrist. Right now I can’t afford the cannabis or CBD that I need, but I do have health insurance so they put me on the antidepressant Effexor, and Xanax for anxiety, which helps but it becomes addicting after a while. And research has shown that Effexor is harder to get off than heroin.

So I’m still on that. If I had money I wouldn’t be, but I had no other choice. I felt stuck. I couldn’t get out of bed or do anything. I have a kid, I have to do stuff. I also was just diagnosed with social phobia. I knew that something was weird, the way I was communicating wasn’t normal, I would just cut people off. My last therapist cut me off because I kept missing it – it was really hard for me to talk to someone, and they didn’t understand I had social phobia.
There’s some people I’m super comfortable with, I don’t need to smoke or do anything but other times I need something extra so that I can function. It has to be the energies of people, because when I’m alone or with a good energy I’m fine, I don’t feel any type of way.
Cognitive therapy has been really helpful in forcing me to do the things I’m most afraid of. My anti-depressant helps with the social phobia but the anxiety is still there.
What are some of the ways that weed helps you?
It has helped with anything and everything that I have dealt with. With the issues from childhood, with my triggers. I get triggered a lot because I’m at home, in this house where my virginity was taken. And that wasn’t the only time I was raped – there have been more times. I’m triggered every day, but cannabis helps.
When I smoke, I’m more outgoing, instead of lazy and depressed. I’ll actually start cleaning up my house and doing stuff with my daughter. I’ll be way more active, I can do anything. I don’t use it around her – I don’t want her to think I’m smoking cigarettes but when she’s older I will educate her about it. Cannabis helps me figure things out when I can’t think straight. When I’m in panic mode, I’m walking in different directions, I don’t know what to do or who to call. And if I just take a couple hits, everything slows down, like okay, I can think straight and not make rash decisions.
It also helped once I started having sex. I wasn’t getting pleasure – I wanted to do it but was just too tense. So when I started smoking and dating somebody who also smoked, I was actually able to let go and not be so self-conscious. And it helps me communicate better with the other person.

Do you communicate these reasons you like to smoke with the other person? I don’t really, I keep that to myself because then they’ll be like oh, you can’t have sex if you don’t smoke weed… it’s not true because I have. And it’s not like I don’t want the person or I’m afraid of them, it’s just the social phobia, these things I’ve always had.
Education is key so that everyone can understand what they are consuming, and it helps those who don’t consume it to not judge what they don’t understand.
Do your doctors support you using cannabis?
The doctor I’m seeing now supports me. He didn’t want me smoking at first, so I told him about how it’s the only thing that helps me and now he doesn’t bother me about it. He told me to buy CBD but I can’t, so he gave me Xanax. I only take it when I’m about to have an anxiety attack.
All my pills are completely free of charge with my health insurance. It’s expensive to buy CBD out of pocket. They told me to get a card, but it’s really hard to get here.
I wish they would legalize it here… it would also create more jobs. I’ve done my own hydroponics before and was offered a job, but couldn’t take it because I didn’t have someone to take my daughter from school. Now, I live with my mom and my sisters are helping with my situation.
Why did you decide to share your story here?
I decided to share my story with you and future readers because I always felt misunderstood due to my social phobia. I recently opened up to my sister and it felt like weight lifted up off my shoulders. Sharing my story feels liberating and now I can make space for more positive things. I also want people who have similar mental health issues to feel less alone because when I hear someone’s story that I can relate to, that’s exactly how I feel.
I am also sharing to end the stigma. Cannabis has been extremely helpful in my journey to healing and dealing with everyday life, especially as a mother. I want other mommas to know it’s okay to medicate even if it’s still not legal where they live.
Lastly, I’ve been practicing my social skills and communicating with my friends more on how I feel – I have lost less friends and also made many because of it. Sharing can be helpful for others in similar situations and I hope that anyone who can relate keeps on going, because change is constant and nothing can last forever. Just keep riding the waves as hard as they may seem.

Dental Insurances in California...?
I live in California. What is the difference between HMO vs PPO? Meaning there cost and coverage. I know that HMO has a very small selection of Dentists and PPO means you can pick from a larger selection, but I am asking about costy and coverage. I am in need of either Dentures, Bridge work, and eventually Dental Implants badly. 2 emergency dentists that I have seen have mentioned something about... if I have a PPO then they will cover everything, but when I ask them to explain, they tell me to look it up because they don't have time to explain it to me. I have tried to look it up, but I can't seem to figure out what they are talking about. What did the dentist mean by... they will cover everything? As in I will not have to pay anything out of pocket? One dentist even said that if I have a PPO then he can do the work while I wait for the insurance to start, pay him directly, then he will give me back my money when the insurance pays him. But what does that mean? All the PPO and HMO plans I see say that I would still have to pay 50% of the cost. I am unemployed so money is a huge problem, but with my current problems with my teeth, I can not go on interviews. What are my options regarding insurance?
My insurance coverage ended on Dec 9 and i forgot to pay for the renewal. According to the letter I received last week my insurance company will reinstate me if I paid by Dec 29th. So I paid today. However a guy hit a bunch of parked cars including my car in a parking lot and died on the spot. This happened last night. I will get the police report next week from our local police station. So now what should i do? Should i wait for the police report and file a claim against this guy's insurance company? Should I contact my insurance company and ask them to deal with it? Will they actually agree to handle this claim?

Cheap insurance for new drivers? Please help!!!?
Hi guys, I really need some help. I'm just pricing up car insurance, I currently have a provisional licence and i take my driving test next week, I'm doing insurance quotes for a 2005 volkswagen polo s 55 petrol 3 door Manual car, and I've being looking at prices for provisional drivers and newly passed drivers and the prices are ridiculous. Provisional is coming in at approx 1300, which I can cope with for the year but as soon as I pass my test BAM! prices are looking at about 2,700. I've done everything right according to the advice in the internet, we have a secure garage, off-road parking, during the day it will be kept in a secure office car park. I've tried confused.com, comparethemarket, confused.com, gocompare etc and the prices between provisional and full licence are topping 1,200 in difference. Does anyone know of any websites designed for new drivers or maybe places i could look and get quotes which aren't on comparison websites? or maybe any tips that I could use to reduce the quotes because they are ridiculous. We've added on two drivers with over 30+ years each on and also my boyfriend with 7yrs no points. all have no convictions, record, points etc. Thanks :) Kirsty""
How should I insure my now deceased father's house?
My father has recently passed and his house is currently vacant. It is a small home only around 1,000 sq. ft. It hasn't been estimated recently but I would guess it's value around $60,000. Homes in the area are going for foreclosure for less than $30,000. My son plans on living in the home a year from now. How should we insure the home in the mean time? If we can find someone we know and trust we may rent it out in the mean time, if not, how should we? The home is currently in my sister and I's name. What do we need to do to keep costs down? I'm talking about insurance and taxes. Thanks for any advice!""
Why is my insurance going up?
I've been working with my employer for 7 years, as of right now I have employee & spouse coverage, I pay about 150 a month (auto deduct from paycheck) and that amount gets me a $5000 deductible and about a $25-$30 co-pay. this morning in a company meeting we were told that our insurance is going to go up (starting June 1st) now for employee and spouse it is going to be $410 a month (everything else the same as before co-pay and deductible) last year my hubby had some medical issues and we have about $7000 in medical bills (on a payment plan we pay $400 a month) so now when my new rate kicks in (in about a week) I will have to pay a total of $800 a month just for medical stuff... I can't afford this. my employer is very upset and wants to shop around but has been shopping around for 8 months now and can't find anything better than this. why is health insurance rising?? I am thinking about dropping myself from health insurance all together (I am 31 and healthy), also i plan on getting rid of my cable and internet (which would save $140 a month), my husband (with medical issues) will get health insurance through his work (about $160-$200 a month) and I will go without for a couple of years just so we can keep our heads above water... I just have a question about my plan of action- can I drop my Health insurance? will I get fined for opting out of health insurance when Obamacare goes into action next year?""

How to get the best damage offer from insurance company ?
I am a university student in Toronto(Canada). I saved up $5,000 and bought myself a car in 2006 -- a 1991 white Acura Legend in excellent condition with only 140,000 km. No major repairs were required up to now. I T-boned a car which was making a left turn this Saturday; my car is now totalled. The other driver will be charged by the police with making an improper left turn. I only took out liability coverage (no collision coverage); my own insurance comp is offering me $1900 for my damaged car, but I would like $2500 as the loss of my car is totally not my fault. My adjuster said that the insurance is quite firm on the $1,900. I would like to know what will happen if I dispute this amount? What can I do to get more than $1,900? Can I get compensation from the other drivers insurance company since she was at fault, if yes, how do I go about? I need a car to drive to school due to the distance. Thank you very much.""

How much should I be paying for car insurance?
I live in the Philadelphia metropolitan area, although not in the city itself. I'm 25, and I've had my license since I was 18. I've been in one accident, and the other driver was ruled at fault. I've had no traffic tickets. I have a two year college degree and good credit. I drive a 2006 Chevy Cobalt that will be paid off in August. It's currently under my parents' name and on my parents' insurance policy. Once it's paid off, they're supposed to sign it over to me. (I'm reimbursing them for the car and insurance.) My parents might be ripping me off on the insurance costs; my father bought a second truck around the time of my 25th birthday, and there hasn't been any drop in the policy costs. Where can I find affordable health insurance?
Where can I find affordable health insurance without a deductible that makes it pointless to have insurance? We live in Nampa Idaho. We are on a tight budget but I can probably make room for a couple hundred dollars. I would need family coverage for myself, husband and 2 year old daughter. I have tried looking around online and all of the insurance plans are about $400+ a month and still have a deductible of $2500+ per person. I have looked into welfare and their income limit is $317 a month, and they have no options for paying a monthly premium for people that can't afford the other plans. I just wanted to see if anybody had any recommendations for something that might be a little affordable. We have chronic health conditions so we do tend to use a lot of medical services.""

California Health Insurance?
I am looking to get health insurance for a year, more to take care of neglected issues than to cover my butt if I get sick/hurt (I'm 27, betting on youth and good health!). Kaiser seems to be the most appealing because they cover a broader range of services. I am namely interested in physical therapy (winged scapula), dermatology (oily skin/acne), perhaps mental illness services as I have suffered from depression (although I somewhat consider it a problem of my past). I'm aware insurance plans won't cover preexisting conditions, but how can they really prove these issues didn't start yesterday, right? I'm overwhelmed with my choices. Is it worth paying $330/mo for $0 deductible, 0% coinsurance, $40 co pays and a max out of pocket @ $3000? Or is it smarter to pay $166/mo, $2700 deductible, 0% coinsurance, $0 co pays after deductible, and max out of pocket @ $5000 (including deductible)? Etc. I have put off getting insurance because I'm scared I will pick a completely inappropriate plan. Can anyone shed some light on this for me?""

Dr. Amy Wechsler, Dermatologist & Psychiatrist
New Post has been published on http://skincareee.com/dr-amy-wechsler-dermatologist-psychiatrist/
Dr. Amy Wechsler, Dermatologist & Psychiatrist
“I’ve been a dermatologist for 12 years now. I knew I wanted to be a doctor probably in seventh grade. I chose Cornell for medical school because I wanted to be in New York—I did my internship in emergency medicine, then adult psychiatry, and then child psychiatry for a couple of years. When I went back to do dermatology, I studied at SUNY Downstate—it’s in Brooklyn. Dermatology and psychiatry connect the most internal aspects with the most external. There are actual connections between the mind and skin—lots of them. I had horrible acne as a teenager. I remember how that felt—to wake up in the morning and not know how many pimples I was going to have. That would dictate how I would feel about myself that day. I’d often talk about having a bad skin day, which is like having a bad hair day, and how frustrating it was, how it affected my self-esteem. Then, as my skin cleared up, how much better I felt—more confident.
In my practice, I treat acne pretty aggressively because I think it’s important to clear someone’s skin up. I don’t think it’s cosmetic—I think it affects their their life in so many different ways, and it’s totally treatable. If someone has an ulcer, that individual has to deal with how it feels—no one else can see they have it. But if you have a bad breakout, psoriasis, or eczema from stress, you have to deal with how it feels to you, what it looks like to you, how other people will respond to you, how other people do respond to you… I love treating people with severe acne because it’s really rewarding to help them. When they [first] come in, they often avoid eye contact and their posture’s not great, their grooming isn’t awesome, and their life is often not going so well. As I start to help clear them up—and it’s not overnight, it takes months—I watch them stand up straight and smile and make eye contact. They start to try new things, maybe go for a job interview, or go on a date. It’s pretty awesome to watch.
After my first magazine article in 2006, my practice kind of went off from there—I did a little bit of consulting with Clinique, so I did TV around the country. I was on the Today Show and the Tyra Banks Show. I’ve been kind of a go-to person for editors, because they know I will not lie. I’m very honest and I care a lot about science and data, and I’m critical of claims that aren’t based in truth. I’m a person who won’t B.S.—I’ll always be a straight-shooter. When I first started out, if I said no to a procedure for someone, they would just go across the street. But I think at this point now, people really trust me and my recommendations. It’s all about looking natural, looking like yourself, turning the clock back on yourself—not trying to look like someone else. There are also a lot of options now, which is fun! There are injectibles, like Botox, that relax muscles and—when used properly—really rebalance the face and help treat and prevent fine lines and wrinkles. Thin fillers like Volbella are great for lines around the mouth, and then thicker ones like Voluma lift the cheek and restore volume. And there are lots of lasers that target sunspots, acne, hair removal, skin-tightening, and fat-freezing—that’s called CoolSculpting. It works really well. There are lots of ways to nuance all of that. You can be artistic in that way.
SKINCARE My skin is easily irritated. It can’t tolerate a lot of harsh products or a lot of manipulation. Often it gets rashy or itchy from things like fragrances, and it has to be treated super gently. I can’t just go to a random hotel and use the products—I will get a rash. I have to use fragrance-free laundry detergent. And I have to moisturize every day, twice a day. Dove Sensitive Skin Soap or Purpose Cleansing Bar are my soaps and cleansers. I’ve used them in high school—a long time ago—and I just now went back to them. If something works for you, no need to change it. My everyday moisturizer is Solution 10 from Chanel, which is a sensitive skin moisturizer. It’s only got 10 ingredients and is fragrance-free, with some Silver Needle Tea extract in it. I’m really into tea, and Silver Needle has got the highest concentration of active antioxidants. This is the first product I’ve worked on from scratch. Chanel has these awesome, state-of-the-art labs in France that I go to every year. For a science geek like me, I can do a lot of really good research there.
Every morning, even in the winter, I always wear sunscreen. It’s not necessary when it’s dark when I leave and it’s dark when I come back, but I’m a creature of habit and I don’t want to ever get caught off guard. I use the Chanel UV Essentiel SPF 50. It does have a little fragrance, but I don’t react to it. It has 17.1 percent zinc oxide and some octinoxate, so it’s a physical and chemical blocker—mostly physical. It’s so thin that’s cosmetically elegant. You don’t feel like you’re wearing it. It doesn’t feel greasy, it doesn’t clog pores. It’s actually sweat resistant and it’s compatible with all my other skincare. The skin is just a good barrier at keeping the good things in and the bad things out. If we absorbed any of those chemicals [in sunscreen], we’d be dead. You don’t want to eat any of those products, but it’s safe to put on your face. Some people just want an excuse to not put on sunscreen.
I don’t use masks regularly. I have nothing against masks, I just don’t have time. The only mask I can use is a hydrating mask, and occasionally I make one at home with whole milk yogurt and honey. It gently exfoliates, moisturizes, smells good, and doesn’t bother my skin. I’ll do a light chemical peel with salicylic every couple months or microdermabrasion, and that helps to exfoliate and get the dead cells off. If my skin’s particularly bad, I have a serum. I use the Chanel Hydra Beauty Micro Sérum—that one’s really great.
MAKEUP I didn’t know much about makeup growing up. I was such a tomboy for so long that I kind of missed the boat on that. I remember my friends making me up for fun, because I didn’t know how to do it. I started wearing eyeliner, but that was about it. Since then, I’ve gotten a few makeup lessons. My daughter is excellent at it—she’s teaching me a few things. I always do my eyes in the morning. I usually do eyeliner, a little upperlid eyeshadow, I curl my lashes and do mascara, and then I’ll do some undereye concealer. I’ll either use the Chanel Le Volume Mascara, or I like Covergirl LashBlast. My eyelashes are long but thin, so I need a mascara to make them thick without being clumpy. It literally takes me 10 seconds to put it on and it doesn’t irritate my eyes.
I’ve gotten some makeup advice from some great makeup artists over the years, and my eyes are my best feature, so I want to define them and bring them out more. To do that, I’ll do a liner on the lid margin. Then I usually use a neutral eyeshadow from the Les Beiges Healthy Glow Eyeshadow Palette in the brown/gray/taupe family, and I put on a little blush—Chanel Les Beiges Blush in No. 23. That one is rosy, not peachy—I don’t think I look good in peachy. I use a brush from Chanel…I’m so lucky! [Laughs] As long as you wash and take care of your brushes, you can keep them forever. I don’t know how to contour, but I wish I did. I’ll finish with Rouge Coco Stylo in 218. I have it in my desk at work and I have it here at home. I feel like it enhances my natural lip. It’s a little bit darker, and it’s appropriate for work. And I use Vaseline to moisturize my lips. People always say, ‘You can’t use that!’ And I’m like, ‘I’m putting it on my lips, I’m not eating it!’ And as a rule, I don’t use lip plumping products. If something is plumping your lips, it’s just because it’s irritating your skin.
HAIR I have very fine hair, which is annoying. I kind of splurge and get my hair done a couple times a week, but it lasts for a few days so that’s good. I go to Julien Farel. Julien’s French, and most of the women who work there are French, and for some reason whenever I go to France, French hair people always understand my hair—they’re really good with fine hair. They’re able to give it some movement and some curl and it lasts. They’re so nice in that salon and really low-key. It’s not a scene at all. I get [my hair] highlighted—I do that every three months. I think it just brightens my face to have a little bit of gold around it, but I also think it gives a little bit more texture to my hair.
To style, I use Phyto’s Volumizing Spray. You put it on your wet hair before it’s blown, and gives me a little bit more volume without being sticky. To wash my hair, I use the Julien Farel Shampoo and Conditioner because it’s good and it’s easy. They cut my hair there [at the salon], and I get my nails done there too. I don’t wear polish, I just have them buffed. I’m in and out of gloves all day, so I just want them to be neat and clean.
BODY & SELF CARE After I shower, I moisturize my entire body. I probably don’t do my ears, but I moisturize my face, my neck with the same products. Neck down, I use body products. Right now, I’m using Cetaphil’s Restoraderm. If I don’t moisturize after I shower, my skin actually feels tight and uncomfortable. Sometimes I’ll do a scrub or some microdermabrasion because afterwards your skin is like a sponge—it absorbs moisturizer really well. But I think Americans overly scrub and cleanse their skin and remove the natural oils you’re supposed to have. A lot of people come to me and their skin’s irritated and when I go through what they do, they’re just over-scrubbing.
My deodorant is by Dove. Aluminium deodorant is totally safe—it does not cause cancer. This one has a light fragrance of green tea and cucumber. I don’t wear it every day because I’m not a sweat-er.
Stress also affects the skin so many ways, and it affects all of your organs. It’s not helpful to just tell people to ‘relax.’ If somebody tells me to relax, I yell at them, or give them a glare. [Laughs] Stress makes everything worse, for sure, but I don’t think stress causes something de novo. Like, if you’ve never had acne in your life, and if you’re not prone to acne, you probably won’t break out just because you’re stressed. You could, but probably something else would happen to you. I think being mindful and taking a look at what’s going on in your life is always so helpful. If I see a patient whose acne has been cleared, and they didn’t change anything since they started breaking out, everything is the same, then I ask, ‘What’s going on in your life?’ and there’s always something.
Sweating is fine for your skin. Increasing circulation in the skin is a good thing for it. When you work out, you’re creating betaendorphins, which are healing and anti-inflammatory molecules for your brain, your body, and your skin. My most important self-care things are Pilates and working with my trainer and my physical therapist. Having had 16 orthopedic surgeries in my life, Pilates has never hurt me. I’ve found something that is whole body-focused, helps with posture, and is so healthy. And I have an awesome Pilates instructor, Kevyn Zeller. And I definitely focus on getting enough sleep—I try to get 7.5 or 8 hours of sleep for sure. I can’t skip on that. It’s helps your mood, it helps to heal, it’s helps to stay young… It helps everything.
SUPPLEMENTS I take Vitamin D3—I eat dairy products but I take D3 because I think it’s important and to offset the sunscreen I wear every day. I also take calcium. Women really need 1000 miligrams of calcium per day and it’s hard to ingest all of that. I want to have strong bones my whole life! I take calcium in a chewable form called Adora, the dark chocolate one. I’m lactose-intolerant and there’s no lactose in that.
ON INJECTIBLES I think less is more with Botox and fillers, but I definitely have Botox and filler in my face. I use low doses myself. I’ll do fillers every two to three years and it lasts. A lot of what I do keeps people out of the plastic surgeon’s operating room, or is a bridge, so they can hold it off for 20 or 30 years. I’m hoping that’s the way of the future. People don’t like aging! In our heads, we’re younger than we look and when the disconnect is so big, it doesn’t feel good. And people have abused their skin so they’re aging prematurely. So if there are ways to safely turn back the clock, why not?”
