I just wanted to say that I absolutely love ur Leon AUs and am forever in awe of how well u manage to blend together insect and humanoid parts. I've always liked the human-with-mandibles aesthetic but could never figure out how to draw it realistically. How do u do it? Love the art, u deserve more recognition!
AW HECK THANK YOU ;_;
Honestly Im always really nervous posting stuff cause its niche and obvs not everyone's cup of tea but I’m really glad people like it! I think i’d die if I got more recognition lmao
As for how I do it......... :^) that’s the fun bit, I put this simple tutorial/breakdown together so I hope it helps!
Disclaimer: Its extremely not anatomically correct but I throw that away a bit for the sake of fun, but it’s important to keep in mind when designing anything you want to be believable! A key to this in body horror I think is it looking like it could possibly work (a lot of factors go into this though)
First the basic structural breakdown of placement. I usually default to this style because it hugs the face nicely and gives you a lot of range. I use really simple shape language to get started, each mandible can be broken into three lines. The beginning segment, the middle, and then the third which extends to the tooth/claw/thing
Tumblr media
Expressions are the best way I think to sell it as feeling realistic. They’re part of the body, and specifically the face! They’re gonna react to emotion or whatever the character is doing (i.e. if they’re eating a burger, have those bad boys help out! grip the foot etc.)
Tumblr media
Let them move dynamically! Use them expressively! Its extremely fun! I like to think of them as weird fingers that stick out of the face, but give them some limitation. Think about how joints, muscles and ligaments work and how they allow and constrict movement. My rule of thumb is to have limited movement on the 2nd and 3rd joints, just up down movement like your fingers. But where they connect to the face they have a little side-to-side too like your thumb! If you grip your hands but leave your forefinger and thumb loose and try doing a crab pincer thing with them you’ll see what I mean. You can Sort of rotate your forefinger at its base, not as much as your thumb but the joints beyond that really only go in an up/down motion.
An alternative design option if you want to go more traditionally looking insectoid is to have them extend outwards from more inside the mouth
Tumblr media
You can do a lot with this but keep in mind there isnt much space in there if you want them to fold up inside the mouth, but that makes for a fun surprise!
I think a good exercise for getting started is have your character you want to apply mandibles too, draw them normally and then toy around with stick lines on their face as like a very basic bone drawing of where they would sit, where on the face do they start (top and bottom jaw near the ears for me) and where do they extend? I always start with gesture lines when I sketch to get the placement looking good and to determine how I want them to sit on the face so I don’t obscure much of the nose/mouth depending on the camera angle of the picture.
Here’s some extra goodies for fun, a creature design I made in 2017 and my halloween costume from 2019 (on a very tight budget lmao I didnt have much work at the time BUT you can always make a fun costume from basic cheap materials! We had a mini party at our house and handed out candy to trick or treaters while we were all in costume)
Tumblr media
Remember none of this is a rule or ‘correct’, its just my approach for fun and there’s so many ways you can do it depending on how far on the uncanny valley/body horror scale you want to go!

To say I am overwhelmed by the positive response to the Kaleidoscope blanket would be rather understating it. To be honest, I’m quite gobsmacked by how many people have joined the FB group, or contacted me, or bought colour packs! It’s so lovely seeing so many of you choosing colour packs or your own colours, and sharing in your excitement as we creep closer and closer to the beginning of the CAL.
I promised to tell you all about my inspiration for this blanket, so that’s what I’ll talk about today.  Bear with me; this is a bit of a meandering story 😛
It began, as so many of my blankets do, with a book.
It begins with ‘The Children of Green Knowe’, and indeed the other five Green Knowe books, by Lucy M. Boston.
My childhood copy, alongside a replica of Toby’s mouse –  a key detail from the story!
I don’t remember when I first read these books, but I must have been young – five or six, perhaps. Some books are like that – you simply don’t remember a time when they weren’t part of your life. I have known and loved them always. They are, quite simply, magical books that, for me, form part of the foundations of my love of literature. Like Narnia, they have always been there for me. Even now, as an adult, I go back and re-read them often, particularly if I’m feeling a little worn down by life and need to remember how magic the world can be.
The first book begins with young Tolly Oldknowe, sent for the Christmas holidays to his great-grandmother’s house Green Noah (formerly Green Knowe), in the fens of East Anglia. He arrives to a flood, discovers his ‘ancient’ and magical-seeming granny, and slowly begins to uncover the secrets of a very old, very interesting house.
The house in the book is based on a real house – The Manor, in Hemingford Grey, not far away from where I live (it’s in a village between Cambridge and Huntingdon). It’s one of the oldest continually inhabited houses in the country – built and in use since the 1130s! Lucy Boston moved there just before World War Two, and all six wonderful books (as well as several of her other children’s novels) are set in and around the house.
I’ve been there on several occasions, and it’s absolutely incredible, as a lover of the books, to walk into the house where the stories actually take place. Things described in the book actually exist: outside, a statue of St Christopher carrying the child Jesus; carved wooden cherubs in the corners of the entrance hall; an enormous fireplace big enough to stand in; an embroidered picture made from human hair (which features in the second book, ‘The Chimneys of Green Knowe’; and, when you climb a winding stair up to the attic, Tolly’s bedroom, complete with bird cage, rocking horse, wooden chest of toys and a replica of a carved wooden mouse that plays an important role in Tolly’s discovery of the magic of the house.
The garden, too, is magical. It’s famous for its roses and irises, but when my grandma took me there, as a child, to an open garden day, all I was interested in was the yew animals that I found – the Green Deer and Green Squirrel that exist in real life as in the books (although, unlike in the books, in real life they don’t come alive and start wandering around of their own accord!).
Not seeing the connection so far? Bear with me 😀
Because Lucy Boston isn’t just famous for her children’s novels – she also created some incredible patchwork quilts.
This is another connection to my grandma, who was also a quilter. Never quite on Lucy Boston’s scale, but she definitely knew about and had seen these quilts, many of which are on display in the Manor.
They’re very carefully looked after, separated by dust sheets and handled only with gloves, to keep them in good condition, but when you go to visit, sheet after sheet is removed and quilt after beautiful quilt is revealed. Even to a non-quilter, the display is incredible. Lucy’s skill in matching colours and fabrics, her tiny stitches, and frankly her unending patience, are all immediately evident!
And, bringing it back to the novels, patchwork also features heavily in the second of the Green Knowe books, when Granny Oldknowe tells Tolly stories of previous inhabitants as she uses their old clothing to replace sections of worn-out patchwork for the curtains that, in the novel as in real life, hang in many windows around the house.
The quilt that I love most of all the ones I’ve seen in the house, and in the above book, is one called ‘Kaleidoscope’.
‘This patchwork nearly drove Lucy made with its complexity’, writes Diana Boston. ‘On the other hand she found it the most exciting to make.’
I began thinking about reproducing patchwork quilt effects in crochet some time ago, but for a while it was just that – a vague thought in my mind. Then I remembered these beautiful quilts and, last December, I bought myself a copy of this book and settled down for a good, hard stare at the pictures.
It really is incredibly complex, and I understand completely how driven by it Lucy Boston must have been, when she made it. There are no circles in it – it’s entirely made up of squares and triangles. Can you imagine how much work Lucy put into this? The colours, the patterns, are all perfect matches, and she worked all of this as paper pieced patchwork in the proper English tradition.
I knew I couldn’t replicate this exactly. I needed to use fewer colours, and I thought that I would replace some of the triangles with octagons, to simplify things a little. So I looked carefully at the shape of it, and at colour placements, and slowly began to sketch out my ideas.
After drawing out the shapes I needed, I started playing with colours, working out ways to replicate my favourite bits of the patchwork blanket in a way that would be translatable into crochet. It took a little trial and error, but eventually I ended up with something that, on paper, felt to me like a success. It’s definitely ‘inspired by’ rather than directly replicating Lucy’s patchwork, but I was happy with it.
As usual, I worked up my shapes in a single colour first, to concentrate on the pattern rather than the colours. Then I began to work it up in colour, and it was only then that I decided I would run this blanket as a CAL, rather than simply offering the whole pattern at once as I normally do. That decision made, I realised I should offer more than one official colourway. A little more playing around with colouring pencils and yarn pegs ensued! Luckily I had photocopied the blank sketch before I started colouring, so I had spare copies to play with 🙂
Old Rose on the left, Tequila Sunrise on the right
The three official colourways then came into being.
#gallery-0-20 { margin: auto; } #gallery-0-20 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 33%; } #gallery-0-20 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-0-20 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */
Jewellery Box
Old Rose
Tequila Sunrise
And that, as they say, is that!
The Manor is now owned/occupied by Lucy’s daughter-in-law, Diana, who runs tours to help support the running of the property – no National Trust here, just a cosy, well-loved family home. You can sit, in the music room, where airmen sat in WWII when Lucy ran music evenings for their entertainment. You can explore ‘Tolly’s bedroom’, and touch and hold the things so familiar from the books. You can’t touch the patchworks, but you can see them and marvel at them. And in the garden, you can ramble around four acres of beautiful ‘cottage’ style garden for as long as you like.
It truly is a very special place to visit, even if you aren’t familiar with the books, and I do urge you all to go if you’re close enough.
If you’re in the UK and fancy reading the books, having read me ramble on about them, you can buy them directly from the Manor, which helps Diana Boston keep up the house.
I hope you all enjoyed hearing about my Kaleidoscope journey; I’m so looking forward to seeing all your blankets. Don’t forget the CAL starts 3rd January, and colour packs are available now 🙂

Tumblr media
Finally I got round to making this post! I thought this might be helpful to all those who are studying physiotherapy, these are by no means the best books for PT out there I just found them really useful in both first and second year. I would recommend maybe checking these books out in the library first before buying them to see if you like them. I’ll sorta give an overview of each book and why I found it useful so you guys can sort of get a feel on what’s good about it. Also I’ll link where you can buy it on amazon, but you can get it on second hand book websites or eBay for possibly cheaper.
Everything will be under the cut so this post isn't hella long on people’s dash
1. The physiotherapist’s pocketbook
Tumblr media
Good: SO MUCH INFORMATION! It has info on dermatomes/myotomes, the origin/insertion of all the main muscles, normal levels of obs, common drugs used and so much more.Small which means it can fit inside the pocket of your tunic quite easily so you can carry it wherever you go on placement.
Bad:
Only ‘bad’ thing I can really say about this book is that it is a little on the pricey side considering how small it is, but in my opinion it is worth the money because for placement it literally has everything you can possibly need.
2. Principles of neuromusculoskeletal examination and assessment
Tumblr media
Good: This book is very detailed when it comes to the assessment of the different joints of the body. It has the general subjective and objective assessment but then it also has separate chapters going into more detail on each joint so highly useful for specific special tests on the joint and how you perform them
Bad: I found it was very repetitive in each section and when I read it I have to sort of just skim read the pages because I get bored reading the same thing again and again. So I have to flick through a lot of pages and read a lot of the things I read in the first section before I get to what I really am looking for I guess
3. Principles of anatomy and physiology
Tumblr media
Good: I actually only mainly used this in first year because thats when our anatomy and physiology exams were. Out of all the books this to me was the easiest to follow and understand, has your standard anatomy and physiology no different to other textbooks it was just the layout I preferred
Bad: It has the same info as other books as expected, sometimes it wasn't as detailed in certain sections so I had to look for other books which was kinda a hassle but no single book is perfect so I did use this with other anatomy and physiology textbooks too but this was the main one I found myself using
4. Joint structure and function
Tumblr media
*side note that I actually used the 3rd edition and preferred that edition
Good: I used this book when the principles of anatomy and physiology didn't have enough information on the biomechanics of a joint e.g. scapulohumeral rhythm. I found that this book really explained concepts clearly enough for me to understand, the 3rd edition had black and white drawings which I found super useful
Bad: As any other book, some sections I found way tooo long to read and sometimes I just wanted them to get to the point haha but also it is kinda just filled with words not too many diagrams so if you don't learn like that then I'm not sure if this book is for you
So those were the main 4 books that I mainly used last year, obviously I did use other textbooks depending on the topic I was studying but for general information I used the books above, I’ll link other books below that I didn't necessarily use a lot but I used sometimes and they were good/books my course mates used
Honourable mentions:
Tidy’s physiotherapy - I didn't use this a lot but it is a good alternative to book 2 and my friends have preferred this over that book because it is easier to follow they said. But I haven't used it enough to give a thorough opinion on it
Concise book of muscles - I really only used this in first year when I needed to learn origin and insertion of the muscles but it is very accurate and has very good images of the muscles
Gray’s anatomy flashcards - Now I never actually bought these because I personally felt I didn't need them but one of my friends did buy these and loved them as they are very detailed and are a good way to learn your anatomy. I have heard there are other cheaper alternative to these flashcards so I’d recommend looking around first
The anatomy colouring book - Again I don't actually own this book (I own an alternative book) but this is the colouring book most people find the best out of all of them, so if you learn like this then I’d recommend having a look at this as I do know it is detailed and a good learning resource
So those are the books! Sorry for the hella long post, I thought I would at least make it a little detailed so you guys have an idea on what they were good for/not so good for. Hopefully this was helpful to some of you since when I started my course I was stuck on the kind of books that were good, check if your course has a reading list as that is always a good place to start. If you have any other questions on particular books or other books I used then feel free to hit me a message!
