Re-Making Ghost King function

Ghost King is a lot of OP!Danny and skipping other avenues to explore how that could work, so i have IdeasTM to add weight to the role and make it Worse For Ghost King or add costs to acting outside of the role.

Adding possible story ideas to each example i give, and up for grabs just tag me if you do anything :D

Ghost king is a curse and death sentence.

It drains your core and keeps you from your obsession. It is the realm’s denizens deciding ‘fuck this guy in particular’. The draining of the king’s core causes them to go insane (known problem) and the energy goes to sustaining a number of youngers and newly forming ghosts in the Ghost Nurseries.

Yes, Danny’s main area of the Ghost Zone is included in Nursery where ghosts of similar species and backgrounds intermingle with parents of neverborns, form firghts and later move deeper into realms, unless their obsession includes the living. Then they tend to gravitate to portal rich areas, and areas that spawn in their preferred time and regions of living world.

This means Danny? Is possibly going to deal with going insane if he’s crowned, especially as Pariah is around still. Realms are convening on if Danny’s a bigger threat than Pariah after defeating him. Go nuts on court and legal arguments between various ghosts. JLD may be called in by [character] to find a way to save Danny from this BS, while Danny is staging another prison break and probably forming another army on his side that he does not lead and like him enough to keep around but do not agree with him in terms of leadership. So his new friends are kidnapping him for his own good, while a trial is held over if a halfa can be given the cursed role of ghost king, and if Danny should be cursed to future madness

Ghost king is the loosely diplomat between the Infinite Realms. And other realms sometimes.

Ghost King is Extremely Limited in living world regardless of previous powers

Ghost Kings only have their full powers in the realms of the dead, and said powers vary by monarch and region they are present in

Yes this helps explain Danny’s weekly new powers if we include Clocky as a previous king who saw Dan become king and thought early intervention on powers might prevent Dan. Did not work as intended.

In the living realm danny acts more as a medium and can answer questions about the dead, but cannot use his powers anywhere but Amity as Amity is a Veil City (city that exists in both the IR and Living Realm) but is anchored more on living side… outside of the city wandering about as it pleases

Danny is mostly human in human word besides having an encyclopedic knowledge about the dead, burial sites, which death realm one resides in or returned from, ect.,

In the infinite Realms he is eldritch though. As a treat.

Danny is not able to be summoned unless he’s in the infinite realms. Pariah is the backup summon though. And he’s bitchy about it.

High crack, comedy and angst potential

Summons can be anyone, and danny is Done with Cultists and makes a point to tell them to fuck off with the power crap. He will take questions about the dead, and only if he gets a burger shake.

As King Phantom he’s basically a Glorified Realms Secretary in his opinion. He makes Pariah the King when he wants to be bitchy to people, and vice versa.

No rule against Pariah and Danny in a weird joint custody of the title as ‘i beat you, i won’ vs ‘you only meet the credentials half the time. We work in shifts’

Ghost King with Serious Limitations the way most monarchs have.

King Phantom cannot help you with… finding your missing friend. Danny Fenton can.

Fenton gets no access to his powers when going against what Phantom is allowed to do. Including his healing factor!

Since the conversation, if you can call it that, about trans people always seems to come down to bathrooms, I am sure of one thing.

I would much rather share a ladies’ room or a locker room with Sarah McBride than with Nancy Mace.

McBride, of course, was just elected to Congress and, in January, will be the highest-ranking elected official in America who is transgender. The 34-year-old comes to the US House of Representatives after serving in the Delaware legislature; before that, she was the national press secretary of the Human Rights Campaign.

Mace, a member of Congress from South Carolina since 2021, has been on an ugly campaign in recent weeks clearly intended to belittle and marginalize McBride – and to get on TV as much as possible doing so. She has filed a resolution, and the House speaker, Mike Johnson, has given it his nod of approval, that would somehow force trans people to keep out of the congressional bathrooms that reflect their gender identity.

“If you think this bill is about protecting women and not simply a ploy to get on Fox News, you’ve been fooled,” wrote Natalie Johnson, Mace’s former communications director. She added, pointedly, that a real effort to protect women would involve “a bill to bar Matt Gaetz, a sexual predator with an affinity for underage girls, from ever walking those halls again”. (Trump, as you know, tapped the far-right former Florida representative as his attorney general as part of this month’s parade of appalling cabinet choices. Gaetz later withdrew from consideration.)

On Wednesday, McBride reacted with dignity to all the performative insults and abuse. She simply responded that she would follow the rules and that she’s in Congress to represent her Delaware district; I’m sure she’ll eventually find ways to continue her admirable advocacy.

Mace, on the other hand, can’t be described as dignified. She’s running around pasting the word “biological” on restroom doors for photo ops, and snidely tweeting in McBride’s direction about International Men’s Day.

And she’s getting plenty of the media attention she craves.

On one level, this is all part of the unending circus of the Trump era.

On a human level, it’s scary, wrong and damaging.

“As a trans person myself, I’m really worried about where this is headed,” wrote Parker Molloy, who writes incisively about politics and media in her newsletter the Present Age. “I spend each day worrying about whether or not the healthcare that keeps me alive will remain legal, whether I’m going to face new restrictions on where I’m allowed to exist in public, what would happen to me if (god forbid) I wound up in prison for some reason, and whether or not my identity documents like my passport will be retroactively made invalid.”

She added poignantly: “Now, more than ever, I feel alone.”

Trans students may have it even worse. Again, it often comes down to bathrooms.

A lot of children, especially transgender and gender-nonconforming children, avoid bathrooms all day, since that’s where the bullying can be most intense. Thus, advocates say, trans kids often are prone to urinary tract infections or eating disorders because they’ve avoided eating and drinking.

As for the right’s obsession with trans students on sports team, the vast majority have no unfair advantage on the playing fields (or courts, or pools). They are just trying to reap the same benefits of sports as do other kids – leadership, teamwork and friendship.

The meanspirited and misinformed narrative about transgender people makes it difficult for them to feel cared about and to live full lives.

But don’t try to tell that to Mace, whose preoccupation is not with kindness or decency, but with getting attention and winning the culture wars.

As the Daily Beast reported last year, Mace’s staffers were given a handbook that outlined just how intensely this mattered to their boss; they were told to book her on TV multiple times a day, amounting to nine times a week for national outlets and six times a week for local outlets.

In 2021, Mace depicted herself as supportive of LGBTQ+ rights. That was before the tide turned so forcefully and, as Philip Bump of the Washington Post put it, before “the Republican base had been fed a steady diet of anti-trans rhetoric, making trans issues fertile ground for anyone willing to engage in the fight”.

Mace, clearly, is more than willing.

If that means being cruel, then so be it. As writer Adam Serwer observed about Trumpian politics: “The cruelty is the point.”

Meanwhile, vulnerable and marginalized people are made to suffer for trying to be true to themselves. And despite the progress shown by McBride’s election, the world around this milestone seems to be getting increasingly harsh.

Hero stirred to the feeling of bumping and jostling while wrapped in something warm. They didn’t remember falling asleep. They went to open their eyes, and a blurry, dark world came into view. There… wasn't much to see.

Some, if not many, of the photographs looked to be taken from very suspicious angles. Little hearts hung next to some of the pictures.

Hero was not used to the concept of having fans. Sure, they had them, but they had never gotten comfortable with the idea, preferring to leave an area before the crowd of reporters and excited civilians found them. They could barely speak, let alone raise their voice.

“I’m Civilian!” the stranger answered, “and your new partner!”

“…What?”

“Hm… that sedative must be making you slow,” Civilian tutted sympathetically, “that’s okay, I’ll explain it as much as you need me to.”

Civilian ruffled Hero’s hair. Hero shuddered at the touch.

“I’ve planned it all out! Today, our first meeting. Next week, first date. A month from now? Who knows! Of course, we’ll go at your pace, I won’t rush your feelings. They’ll come in their own time.”

Hero glanced at the IV pole then back to Civilian. Civilian tilted their head, then giggled in realization.

“I made that solution just for you,” Civilian said, “I know waking up in a new life can be scary, and that you’d probably do something impulsive once you did, so I took your recklessness out of the equation completely!”

Civilian tapped the bag.

“Thermal serum to keep you from making any ice, and a mild sedative so you won’t freak out. See, I’ve thought of everything!”

Oh, but Hero was freaking out, quite a lot actually; their body just wouldn’t show it.

“Let…me…go…”

Civilian carded their hand through Hero’s hair.

“Haha, no, I won’t be doing that. Not now, not ever.”

“People will be looking for me,” Hero said, “you have to let me go.”

“Oh I’m sure they will,” Civilian said, a certain glee in their voice that frightened Hero.

Civilian showed Hero a newspaper.

Beloved Hero Missing.

Early this morning, an anonymous caller told police that they saw Hero being overpowered by notorious criminal, Villain. They claim to have followed Villain to the docks, where the criminal promptly climbed aboard a ship heading to Morocco, the unconscious Hero in their arms. More details to come as we learn them.

Civilian read the front page to Hero in a giddy voice.

“I made sure to put on a good performance for those cops,” they said, “and I used a pay phone, so they won’t be tracking that call.”

Hero stared up at Civilian with wide eyes.

“See, I’ve thought of everything! Now we can be together forever!”

Civilian hugged Hero’s near-limp form. Hero was too weak and in too much shock to protest. Villains kidnapping them? That they could deal with. This person had thought of everything though, they had even found a way to disable their powers. How were they ever going to get out of this?

Throughout the month of October, the Cartoonist Cooperative will be sharing interviews with members of the Co-op who have a new comic available at the ShortBox Comics Fair 2024!

We’d love it if you could introduce yourself and tell us about your background in comics.

BENNIZONE: Sure!

I’m Benni (she/her), or “BENNIZONE”. I’m an independent comic-artist, making an effort to fill my life with as much art as possible. My work usually centers around lesbians and/or gender-nonconformity, in some shape or form. I work with a lot of mixed media; traditional art is my one true love!

As a kid I’d scribble my own little sequences in stapled booklets. They’d be lying around everywhere, in every drawer and cabinet. As I got older, I got into comic-zines which are homemade, stapled booklets! Exactly what I’d always been making! Who knew they had a whole community based around them. To this day, zines are my favorite medium.

Tell us more about your new comic?

B: Yes, Stagnation Seed! It’s the story of Candy and Violetta, two roommates(?) who try to fix themselves and each other… by pouring their emotions into the project that is The Android Girlfriend. And then having second thoughts! It’s been rummaging in my head for years… It’s a love story, almost a tragedy… but the ending makes me happy!

It’s a narrative that reflects a lot of pent up emotions of mine… The feeling of not progressing fast enough, projecting your feelings onto others, trying to run from yourself while being convinced that you’re chasing the right thing… it’s tough. The comic is special to me for sure.

What are some early experiences as a cartoonist that shaped you or your process?

B: Hmm, I was always just… trying to make connections to others, through art. I wanted people to feel how I felt. The internet wasn’t as big when I was a kid–I didn’t have any friends who shared my passion for comics; I thought I was alone in being absolutely obsessed with them. I think I’m still just trying to reach out, anytime I draw. An endless game of Marco Polo.

What were some challenges you faced with this comic and how did you overcome them?

B: The ending changed a few times. I wasn’t sure how open-ended it should be… it was important to me that there were loose ends to be explored by the reader after the story concludes, since it deals with themes in my own life that I haven’t figured out a solution for. I didn’t want to answer a question I didn’t know the answer to, but I also wanted to deliver a message. In the end, I went with something that felt true to me.

In the same vein, the story jumps back and forth in time, and there’s some sequences that aren’t logical. I wasn’t sure just how experimental I could go, without losing grip on reality; it was a constant dance.

She sees herself going home and Beatrice telling her she’s got a date. Then it shifts to her asking Ava if she might see if she can work late so they can have the place to themselves.
