ok so @abby-the-bass-clarinetist asked:
why do we hate steve rogers? pardon me but I'm just really confused
(edit: tagging also @khrrxehk who asked the same thing)
and that's a fair question bc a bunch of people follow me here for other fandoms other than MCU so I'm gonna give a little bit of context, but remember y'all that this is my opinion and I'm biased, obviously. also, warning, spoilers of Captain America: Civil War ahead.
so. the MCU (that stands for Marvel Cinematic Universe btw, which includes the Iron Man, Captain America and Thor movies, plus the Avengers, the whole "new heroes" aka Black Panther, Doctor Strange, Spider-Man, Captain Marvel, I'm probably missing a few idk, and the Infinity War and Endgame movies (the last two being Avengers movies, but you can't exactly box them with the first two avenger movies in my opinion)). the MCU is different from, for example the comics, or the animated series' or whatever, there are a bunch of versions of these characters, which is mainly why I said "hate mcu steve rogers", because from what I hear the rest of them are fine (I haven't consumed any of the other marvel media other than mcu).
ok so yeah, there are a bunch of movies on the mcu, long story short there's one movie, Captain America: Civil War, which, ignoring the plot and the why, it was about Iron Man versus Captain America. the whole media circus before the movie was released was all about #TeamCap or #TeamIronMan, literally. I mean look at the movie poster for example:
[Image ID: Movie Poster for the movie Captain America: Civil War. it shows Captain America and Iron Man (without the armour helmet) on a staring contest really up close, behind Captain America stands the Falcon, Scarlet Witch, the Winter Soldier and Hawkeye also each on a respective staring contest with Black Widow, War Machine, Vision and Black Panther respectively, them standing behind Iron Man. the background looks like Captain America's shield, an outer red circle, an inner blue circle and a white star in the middle, with text reading Marvel Captain America Civil War in the centre of the star. End Image ID.]
for months and months people were talking about team cap or team Iron Man, before the movie even came out, with little context clues as to why they were separated into these teams and/or why they were fighting eachother.
I'm not gonna get into the plot reasons for it, honestly, it's a bit of politics and a lot of personal ideologies. a lot happens in that movie.
anyways the mcu fandom took a bit of a split after this movie, those who sided with team cap and those who sided with team Iron Man. there were of course those who decided to ignore canon completely and live in a 2012-like MCU universe where the core avengers all lived in the avengers tower and Clint ran through the vents and there were prank wars and everyone was happy or whatever. and there were a bunch of people who wrote fix-its, but I think 99% of the fix it fics out there are either team cap or team Iron Man, I don't think you can write a fix it otherwise unless you ignore the movie completely.
anyways yeah, the fandom took a big fucking split, and fanon content started to come out, biased towards one or the other side (and just for the record, that's amazing, I'm not condemning anyone for it, I love a thriving fandom, don't like don't read and that whole thing). so now like 98% of the people on the mcu fandom have very clear preferences, what team they are, who do they think was right, etc.
so basically the short answer for your question, "why do we hate steve rogers?" is "because of civil war" or "because of what he did in civil war" I would recommend watching the movie yourself if you want to actually know, because I could give you a rundown but it'd be biased obviously, and only half the story. also keep in mind that I, personally, knowing that "I'm team iron man" choose to go reading fics that paint steve rogers as the bad guy and worse that he probably actually is in canon, but that's the type of content I like to read, so when I made this post last night was coming from there.
I, personally, don't like mcu steve rogers. I think that as a character he falls short, and that as a "person" he was an asshole. he lied and manipulated his friends, all for his own personal gain. he (like literally all the original avengers and shield) emotionally abused tony stark and took advantage of him, used him for his money and brain while wanting him as far away from them as possible. he then proceeded to lie to him, avoid him and avoid his help, causing the death of what must've been hundreds of civilians, just so he wouldn't have to tell him the truth. he made poor choices with little to no thought because he thought himself to be above it all. he thought himself to be Captain America, puncher of Nazis, representative of the Truth and American Freedom and Patriotism and who knows what other bs. he thought himself to be above the law. he thought himself to be good, without realising that good and bad, like opposites, like black or white, don't exist. he thought himself to be The Chosen American Hero, above the law and above the people, all because some scientist doing illegal shit on the army 70 years ago chose him as his pet project when he had no other options. he decided that the memory of a friend he had 70 years ago was more important than every friend he'd made on the past what, like five years? and he decided that memory was more important than the law of like seven different countries, more important than the United Nations and the vote of ?? how many countries are on the UN?? well, he thought a memory to be more important than that. and I say a memory of a friend he had 70 years ago, because even tho that friend may be there, that friend has also been a prisoner of war for 70 years, tortured, manipulated and used for 70 years. I don't think that person is the same they were 70 years ago, I think they need help, and I mean like medical and psychological help, not seeing your face and "oh look im your long lost friend from 70 years ago, look I'm here, everything's gonna be fine, it wasn't you who did all those horrible crimes for 70 years you're fine I'm.here and you're fine we're gonna be happily ever after now because we're together again" and immediately making then escape the law, break more laws, become an international terrorist escaping said law and go into hiding again.
as you can see, that's my incredibly biased opinion. and I'm not saying that Tony Stark is perfect, or that the accords were perfect, nor anything else. I'm just saying that mcu steve rogers is so fucking stupid and the biggest hypocrite on this side of the sun. also I could keep going and make this make more sense, or talk about Tony Stark or a lot of things, but I woke up an hour ago, spent 45 minutes writing this and I want breakfast, so imma go do that.
hopefully this helped/explained something?? honestly if you wanna know just watch the movie, there's not much context you need to know to watch it I think, or if you want I can look up some good meta people have written about it and more in depth analysis about it and the characters written by someone who's been awake for more than 30 minutes lol
anyways yeah, if anyone wants to know anything else/wants me to explain something better/clear something up y'all can always hmu, DM me, respond this, send me an ask, whatever yall want, I'll always try my best to answer
friendly reminder that on this blog we hate mcu steve rogers and I'd say he can eat my ass but honestly, no, he wishes he could eat my ass
also friendly reminder that mcu Tony Stark is not by any means perfect, and he's made mistakes, but he's an amazing character and I love him regardless
also also friendly reminder that the russo brothers fucked up the mcu working with a franchise they hated with characters they hated only bc it was smth that'd give them money
