The last thing I reblogged really resonated with some feelings I’ve been having about queer media.
Now I love romance as a genre, I really do, but sometimes I just want to read a story that is about life as a queer person, in all it’s facets, and not one solely about the romance aspect.
Recently, I’ve been reading Allison Bechdel’s comics, specifically Dykes to Watch Out for. It talks about one specific group of lesbian friends in the 80s/90s, how they react to world events around them, their friendships, their job struggles, all of that. There are relationships too, but rather than being grand love stories, they are simple everyday relationships. Don’t get me wrong, some of these relationships have their fair share of drama, but they never take over the narrative. They talk about the issues sapphic women face in relationships without it feeling like thats all the story is about.
(Little bit off topic but: They’re also allowed to be butch & fat, sometimes both! It’s really nice).
I can’t really think of a modern queer story, comic or TV, that does this? When I go searching for queer stories, most of what I find is romance. Sometimes you get a coming out story (that seems to be all that exists for aro and ace folks, with the exception of koisenu futari), sometimes you get a story where the characters are queer but it’s incidental and doesn’t affect the story at all. That last one can be refreshing, but personally I feel like my queerness affects my life more than being a bit of trivia tucked away on a wiki page.
Give me stories about queer friendship! About queer community! Give me slice-of-life stories! There’s more to being queer than coming out & dating!
And if you know of comics/books/shows like this PLEASE recommend them. I’m dying for some slice-of-life stories about queer people.
