Hybrid chocolate toxicity question(s).

The avians can’t have it, I’m assuming the dog hybrids (Ren and clan) and the cat hybrids (Lizzie) can’t either… how far does this extend? Can Etho eat chocolate? Can Doc? Can Joel?

Additionally, theobromine (the compound in chocolate that is toxic to most companion animals) is also present in tea, cola, and coffee. Do they have to avoid those as well?

Finally, how much does the human hybridization affect the tolerance for theobromine? Humans have about a million poison immunities (because we’re insane and we eat anything), which is the reason why caffeine and theobromine don’t kill us like most other animals. Let’s say a dog hybrid does eat a whole bar of baker’s chocolate. Is it cardiac arrhythmia, kidney failure, and seizures, eventually leading to death over the span of 36 hours? Are they feeling like hell for a week and then fine? Dogs have a slow mechanism for the removal of theobromine, requiring an unusually long hospitalization time for theobromine toxicity (compared to other poisonings). Are dog hybrids also down for the count for that long? Does the human hybridization make it less long?

I really hope you don’t mind the way my vet med brain just went off there, but I’m so curious as to how your world works.

I just made the birds not eat chocolate because it was a bit I read in several other Avian/wing fics and I thought it was funny…and yeah I do intend to make it canon that Ren also can’t eat chocolate…but as for like what actually would happen to him if he did I was just gonna imagine it like a severe allergic reaction, like if Ren did eat chocolate he’d just be laid out like he had really bad food poisoning for a week but it wouldn’t, like, kill him or anything unless he ate a stupidly large amount.

as someone who worked with reptiles in vet med i especially appreciate how the effects team of hotd gave sheepstealer the telltale physical signs of calcium deficiency in real-life reptiles, especially the discolored patchy skin and malformed wing finger bones. love that they based some reality and interesting facts onto a magical fantasy creature to make it more believable :)

YES!! And we know Sheepstealer doesn’t eat any bones , so he could definitely eat some more calcium. Makes me wonder what the Targaryens are feeding their dragons. There’s no way the dragons look that healthy based on livestock alone 😆

I wish Lady was this easy about pills. She used to be in the first months after adoption. But here we are 2 years later and Her Majesty won't even eat her favourite wetfood if it contains HALF a crushed pill for travel sickness. She'd rather suffer on a train than take her meds. Stubborn.

I had to give my previous cat, Cherry, pills and other medication by force, she didn’t enjoy the experience so I tried doing things differently with Smudge. As he’s very food motivated I’ve abused that to my advantage and I’ve yet to force a pill down his mouth. He gets dry food daily so to him wet food is a huge treat. His medicine is also stored in the same tin box as his treats so he has no idea what he’s going to get 😆. What’s funny is that he’s learnt where his plates/glass bowl is kept and will happy scream when he sees me reaching into that cupboard.

If you’ve not tried it yet may I recommend trying a fish wet food for tablets - the stinker the fish the better? Cats are very sensitive to smells so if a favourite food smells “off” they wouldn’t touch it - this is the same reason an elderly cat goes off their favourite food, it doesn’t smell the same to their aging nose.

Actually I wish Lady was as good about travelling as Smudge is, too 😂 Your fur son seems so laid-back and accepting of a LOT and while my fur daughter is like that about cuddling, she should meet Smudge and learn a thing or two from him 🤭

The goal was always making vet trips as easy as possible for both of us and honestly Smudge’s travels are all practice, approximately 5 years of practice.

I wish he’d be okay with being in a car/taxi as it would make vet and cattery trips much faster buuuuuut he HATES them and will often SCREAM the entire time….soooo it’s almost twice the travel time on various public transport. Luckily his vet is one bus journey away, unfortunately the cattery is 40 minutes by car it’s 1-2 hours depending on making the train connections.

On the flip side if I feel he needs a break I can let him out of the carrier (he’s always in his escape proof harness of course - his middle name is Houdini for a reason) for a cuddle, walk, water or snack. I recently got him a Cat Pack (Cat Backpack) and he seems to like it better than the previous carrier, it might also help that there are tuna treats in one of the pockets that he can smell though the fabric 🤭

Sometimes I like to mix it up when I have free time and instead go to the park, cafe or just sitting at a bus stop for as long as Smudge is can handle. As soon as he indicates he’s had enough it’s back in the pack to go home for a treat. It all adds up to him not associating the harness/carrier with negative trips and makes it easier for everyone. My husband has had to bring Smudge to the vet as I had work and there was little to no fuss.

Full jäkla bil påväg till återbesöket idag på nus! Första gången vi åker allihopa och de funkade helt okej! Tänk att denhär skruttbilen jag bara skulle ha en stund för att slippa köpa nåt dyrare o ta lån skulle bli hela familjens klippa 😂 bästa bilen jag haft! De finare bilarna jag haft har bara varit dyrare än vad de ”smakat” eller vad man ska säga 😆

Iaf! Idag kollades vikten på båda igen och de kontrollmätade även gulsot. Gulsotmätningen såg jättebra ut och även viktuppgången på båda! Fick beröm för det, så jag har visst lite SRB i blodet 😂💪 Pojken får visserligen lite ersättning på dagarna för att optimera upptjockningen på honom, men det blir väl kanske 4 flaskor på ett dygn så ganska 50/50 🤷‍♀️

Lukas var också nöjd för han fick åka mamma bil till stan. Hans liv kretsar MYCKET kring att berätta vilka fordon han åkt för dagen, vilken färg det fordonet har och vem som äger fordonet 😂

Tjejen låg på 2715g när hon föddes och 2650 vägde tjejen idag.

Pojken föddes på 2565 och låg idag på 2500.

(Bäbisar tappar alltid i vikt sina första dygn pga de har sovdygn och sedan amningsdygn innan mjölken kommer igång och börjar mata upp dem igen, till de som funderar varför detta är en grej😂) och för barn som är för tidigt född har man kvar bäbisen för koll eller extra åtgärder om de föds på 2500g eller under. Nu var pojken på gränsen med 65g över det, men vi fick komma hem dygnet efter ändå då jag kände mig trygg i att få i honom mat. O nu är han inte för tunn för att han är så tidigt född utan för att det är tvillingar. Nu överförklarar jag bara för de som kanske inte vet 😂

Iaf. Vardagen börjar flyta på bra nu med dessa. Det är fortfarande ett jävla sjåande men ändå hinner jag göra stall, Lukas får egentid med nån av oss varje dag, jag hinner städa och tvätta och Isak handlar o lagar mat.

Since you updated with them today, how about the HSH Downfall Duo in for the ask thing?

Thanks for the challenging ask! I haven’t done too much with either character in HSH just yet.

What I love about them: Hyrule is a sweet, hardworking cinnamon roll who went into medicine with high hopes and higher ideals. He’s somehow managed to cling to that positive attitude despite the grueling hours and the work itself. You see some bad shit in a day on an ER floor, and yet his optimism perseveres.

I honestly love that Legend doesn’t trust right away. He’s not impolite to strangers by any means, but his respect needs to be earned and is not freely given. Once you have earned his trust and friendship, though, you have a stubbornly loyal friend for life.

What I hate about them: I want to say, “I wish Hyrule would just lose it one of these days,” but then I remembered that he already did, in a small way. But my approach to writing HSH has always been “go big or go home.” Let’s let the cinnamon roll have one (1) murder, as a treat.

I hate that I haven’t used Legend more! Which isn’t his fault at all. I think that when some of my current WIPs wrap up, we’ll delve into Modern Witch Legend and his shady business with Ravio.

Favorite Moment/Quote: Hyrule’s “I’m the doctor now” moment in The Board Exam and Time’s response to him… That was a hard lesson that I had to learn myself. Being a good doctor doesn’t mean that every patient will live, and losing a patient doesn’t make you a bad doctor. I really owe my own internship mentor, who is very dear to my heart, for helping me realize that.

My favorite Legend moment so far comes from Sugar and Spice (no babies were harmed in the making of this fic):

As soon as the door closed, the entire kitchen froze. They listened to Time’s footsteps fading down the sidewalk before the garage door rolled open. It wasn’t until Epona roared to life that they finally breathed a sigh of relief.

“Well, that was nearly a disaster,” Legend huffed, reaching down to lift their troublesome little bundle off of the floor.

As he hefted her up, there was an audible thump that jostled the kitchen table before the baby began to wail.

“Legend!!”

What I would like to see more focus on: I’d like to spend a day in Hyrule’s work life one of these drabbles.

For Legend, as I mentioned above, there is a bit of a story behind his business with Ravio and I just have to figure out the most dramatique way to make it interesting to read about.

What I would like to see less focus on: I should really flesh Hyrule out a little more than “med student,” although if you’ve ever gone to med/vet school you know that during your training you don’t have much of a personality outside of “med student.”

This one stumps me for Legend! Perhaps showing less Snark and more Soft would be beneficial.

Favorite pairing with: Trick question! 😆

Favorite friendship: Okay so I’m clearly biased as fuck, but their respective relationships with Time are probably my favorite friendships. Time goes out of his way to make sure the two of them know that they are cared about in the townhouse — helping Legend come to terms with a part of his past, sharing some of his private space in the house with Hyrule exclusively — and in turn they both have a strong bond with him as well. Even when things begin falling apart in The Brave, these two are more than likely going to stick by his side.

NOTP: Hyrule is so kind and sweet that I think he could get along with just about anyone. Warriors/Legend is not a compelling ship to me, too much friction with not very much payoff.

Favorite headcanon: After leaving Koholint together, Hyrule invited Legend to come and stay with him, “At least until you get back on your feet.” Legend would have liked to refuse, but he had no other options at the time. He realized how poorly Hyrule was taking care of himself since he was so freakin’ busy with school, and he started automatically doing things like washing his laundry or making dinner for both of them. It wasn’t until Hyrule came home one night and was all quiet and blushy over dinner that Legend realized how his actions could have been interpreted. And even if it wasn’t his original intention, he didn’t really want to “correct” Hyrule.

Various goldfish update. Idk. Some is happy. Some is not. It’s pretty long.

Lilac is in a bad way and I’m pretty devastated. About 2 weeks ago she started tipping nose up and then very quickly ended up entirely on her side. I thought it could be a nitrate issue again since she’s been sensitive to it before but after a day of continuous water changes she never improved. Best guess as to the culprit is the mass in her side that’s been growing for a few years. Probably got to her swim bladder.

We went to the vet yesterday and the prognosis isn’t great. If it’s a tumor she wouldn’t survive surgery; it goes all the way through her body and is too close to her vertebrae. There’s a chance it’s an infection of some kind that her body has been walling off, so he gave her injections of fortaz and meloxicam. I’ve got more of those to give her every three days or so.

Till now she’s still been happy to see me, tries to corkscrew around to say hi and beg for food, eats well, was thrilled for the mysis shrimp treats everyone got last night. I have her in a floating 8x11″ basket in the main tank, doc said she didn’t need to be quarantined and water quality is easier on me to manage this way. Plus she can still kinda be with her friends. I don’t want to watch her get sick and waste away. I don’t want to make her suffer for a treatment that isn’t certain to work anyway. I’m going to try a few rounds of the shots, because I can’t just do nothing. But if the meds are too hard on her and she loses that spark, I’m gonna have to put her to sleep.

On happier news. I just realized Nyoom and Zoom are probably close to 12 years old now and not slowing down at all 🥰 Nyoom has some tiny little tumors, including one over her right eye which is probably making it hard to see out of that one, although you wouldn’t know it from her masterful food gobbling skills. I caught Zoom being um, flirtatious, at her this morning, so he’s still struttin’ his stuff 😆

Lady, the little one who lost both eyes, has adjusted really well. She’s consistently showing up at food time and finding the pellets. I see her grazing around on hair algae during the day and she doesn’t seem to have much trouble navigating the tank. She does tend to sit in the pothos roots a lot but for now I’m not too worried about that. She might just be more comfortable somewhere she can feel her surroundings.

Peaches is so fucking cute. I don’t really have anything more to say about him and I wish I could get a decent picture but just. Imagine a perfect little red oranda with a squishy little face and also you just know he’s committed multiple felonies but aw man that moosh....

So today was nice. We ran lots of errands. We took the kids to the (very empty) mall to practice their hoverboard. They have a seat attachment but a strap got lost in transport so we jury rigged a strap out of a belt and leash we had in the car 😆 it worked pretty well. The mall walkers got to watch us fooling around. 😋

I made my sister get me an iced coffee because (I didnt take my night time meds, but..) I was very sleepy and having a hard time. 😶

Went to Aldi's where we got lots of goodies. And Wal-Mart. I've been getting veggie trays, and i have to try really hard not to eat the whole thing at once because fucker's expensive, right? Well I figured if my sister could find me a knife and cutting board, i could pay my ADHD tax and chop up a shit load of veggies when I got home.

I got cauliflower, broccoli, carrots, celery and a couple peppers. It filled 2 stuffed to the brim gallon ziplocks plus a quarter gallon of leftover broccoli and cauliflower. 😳 I'm so excited.

I took Reno back to the vet cause his sneezing was getting worse. Doc gave him a booster of the last antibiotic and said to buy him these 5mg dissolvable claritin.

30 pills were 20 bucks and we're cheap. 👀💧

We found children's liquid claritin. It was dye free, i made sure it had no xilitol. I googled this other ingredient and it said it was safe for all animals except cats. So my sister ran back to compare it to what the doc wanted. I was sent on an errand.

She decided on the original meds. But she didnt get the right dosage.. He only needs half a 5mg. I dont think I can quarter a 10mg. 😅 which is what she grabbed. We might go back tomorrow. I hope we will.

I really wanted to pick up yarn. But walmart did not have a good purple. I'm dying to make a needle felted gengar. 😩😖

Hopefully we can go to hobby lobby tomorrow. 👀

We passed by some bacon in the store and I'm like what happened to the last bacon we got? WHAT HAPPENED TO MY BACON SANDWICHES I WAS PROMISED?

So then we got turkey and bacon clubs for dinner. Omnomnom 8D
