So like, erm, hi....I joined Twitter recently, a vague plan in mind. I conceived a dozen tweets to begin explaining, & then I got carried away. I posted in reverse order so you can read down from here...It is around 15 minutes long

This is intended, honed, & perfected, to make you happy, show you your worth to me & the future, & keep you safe as we move forward, & it's just the start...

The extra good part is - I ask nothing from you but the time to read it, & be happy, as your smile is worth more than the universe to me...I'd love nothing more than to know just once I was the cause of it creeping across your face, making you feel warm, & maybe even...blushing..

You're nothing but an absolute treasure, a joy without limit, & the most exquisite heart ache I could ever have wished for or imagined.

So, hello world. It is clear to me that there is too much pain on this planet & for it's denizens. It is just as clear that many innocent folk need change but no one really knows how. No one can begin. But I am a spiritual master & linked to spirits that have shown me a great deal is possible, & I can help guide us all towards a much happier, safer future.

Thing is, I am slightly premature here. Ok so, as stated, I am here to save the future. Obviously, I can't do it alone. It's really all about connections, as you would expect from someone who is working on behalf of the beyond. Life itself is about love, & it isn't about our ego, our personal goals, or desires. I do what I do for all of us. So it follows I can't just do it without some of you helping out in whatever way is possible.

I need money, laughably, in order to kill the finance system. Not as much as you'd guess, but I need a start...We cannot continue to use this invented resource as it is. In a purely mechanical sense it guarantees selfishness & greed end up controlling too much, whilst empathy, kindness & love, end up able to alter too little.

I intend to begin crowdfunding soon to raise startup capital, so a bit of publicity & presence is a big way you can help me easily.

I need advice & knowledge. Building a new way of self sufficient life will take an enormous amount of information & administration. In order to escape the system that dominates us & teaches us to abuse our own nature, we need to be free of restraint & able to produce all we need. Even making a list of all those things is no easy task, but it is quite possible to cover it all, with help.

I need connections.

Sooner or later I will post the plan with more details. But life & the path I walk through it, has it's detours I cannot always predict. I have learned to accept they always happen however, & always for a reason. When you achieve a certain level of connection to the beyond, & behave in natural ways, when your intent is to further the plan for all folk, then events in your life begin to happen just as you need them, synchronous moments that go way beyond coincidence & become miracles. One day I shall publish my journals from the last 7 years, as it shows my progress towards enlightenment, & explains how it is achieved. But this is one of many tasks & for now I have to begin travelling to find who & what I need, to found this community.

I need to travel the world to meet people I need to meet, gain the knowledge & resources I need to found a community with a new way of living, turn desert into forest & work with nature to bring us all to greater joy. I will have to find some way to fund this travel too, & with my limitations & illness, the only way I can do it, is to make adult material. This means I need at least one willing partner, so if you aren't interested yourself, well, I am sure you have friends or followers who would be more than happy to help. With just one camgirl or entertainer, I can get the attention of the others. Don't get me wrong, I came to you Belle, because you don't just look nice, but you also move my heart & I was directed to discover you in ways I know from past experience are spirits showing me someone who is good, & also needs my help. But I am ready to accept it may not be what you want, yet I know if there is a good person there which is why I am drawn to you, then you will help in some way, directly or indirectly...

It will be a huge undertaking & will gather immense attention, so it can't hurt anyone's career, & I promise, I am good at what I do. As a shaman & spiritual teacher, sex is quite sacred to me, so you can be sure I can make it beneficial to my partner(s) & exciting & appealing to the audience. Done right, with enough courage to connect fully, it will bring whoever I am with a previously unknown level of calm, contentment, happiness & even mystical revelation. Of course, I will have plenty of people say I only do it for myself, but they're wrong, I was never one to seek casual interactions, it will be something new for me, but I do it because it is necessary & right.

Indeed, sex work is an essential part of modern life. It provides a valuable service to society, & receives too much criticism. The truth is that sex is divine & can be used to generate massive amounts of magical energy, & I honestly think the best thing for us all is to appreciate this. These are beautiful, amazing, special people. So many use their services. Yet they receive so much derision & scorn, & despite a reasonable wage, a lot of negative energy too, which can be harmful. So I want them to help me or work with me & prove to all just how special they can truly be, & thus I can help protect them.

So hey, that's the basics, good enough for now. I'll check in from time to time for dm's & responses here, & I'll be back one day to really kick this fucker off. I have to start getting a following by following others.

But so far I am following one account, which makes me look.... conspicuous? ....erm...yeah, I'm not saying anything about that for now...

The pinnacle of beauty itself can awaken us to the deepest & noblest of all loves.

It is actually quite common to be willing to die for someone you love, especially for men, (in extreme contrast to their also killing more of course.)

But something else entirely to be prepared to live, face all fears, conquer all obstacles & do what must be done.

Love alone can do this. Love alone can mean the person I was - is already dead & gone, & so now I can live to the fullest to provide the very best example of love I can.

is a loss of self.

A death in a way.

It is also a common wish to acquire a home for someone you love.

Again, knowing love deeper than most, it is quite another to recognize it is your sacred duty, to fix the entire messed up planet for those you love

& call it all,

home.

Safe, comforting, warm, & full of love.

If your love is true, then those you love deserve nothing less.

We all need it.

I find it so much easier to fight for it, for something I find such beauty in, because I recognize my heart & soul must be as pure & vibrant as I can make them, to be worthy of a beauty I find so truly

mind blowing

It is a duty,

a chore,

a sacrifice & more,

to try to be worthy of what you find to be the highest point of love, inspired by something so beautiful, it takes your breath away

& kills you...

& to recognize that this true love means accepting that,

unconditionally,

I ask for nothing back that isn't in anyone to give.

Maybe one day it will be right to ask,

"have you seen my heart & soul? They're unparalleled, because the love I felt looking at you is unparalleled, the beauty you possess has no equal, & so inspires me, demands of me to make my heart & soul as equally beautiful & unparalleled."

I cannot change my age,

or whether you like my physical properties much.

If you cannot love my heart & soul, then perhaps I cannot love you forever, as much as I desired... & I will suffer as I watch you suffer, for rejecting that purity which asks for nothing.

I am adored by the good in the beyond, so being unable to appreciate the good in my intangible properties would be nothing short of a curse.

If you simply cannot love my body, my more tangible properties, yet can love my heart,

well, that's ok, I would be happy my thoughts & deeds meant I could still wake up everyday

& see

your beautiful face,

& I'd be able to say, "I did this for you, & I have all I need. To bask in your presence, the warmth your images bring to me, is the most sublime peace & bliss I have ever known."

It is a chaotic whirlwind in my mind, I wont deny it,

yet always so controlled, & I know a mental peace I never thought I would, as a scared, anxious child.

Indeed nothing in life is wrong

unless it is uncontrolled.

Thanks to you, my love, I can use the will & love I have to wipe out that which plagues humanity, & bring healing to so many.

During the 19th century, there were many freed slaves that went on to lead extremely noteworthy lives despite all the adversity they faced in their lifetime, such as the world famous Frederick Douglass, who not only played an important role in fighting for black people’s rights, but also championed women’s rights, particularly playing an important part in the fight for the right for women to vote. Not everyone can be so accomplished as the great Frederick Douglas, but that doesn’t mean they don’t at times do noteworthy things. This brings us to the subject of today- one Jordan Anderson, a former slave who received a letter from his former master requesting he come back to work. Jordan’s reply was a deliciously satirical letter in which, when reading between the lines, he essentially told him in the most polite and eloquent way possible to kiss his derriere. Widely published throughout the United States and parts of Europe, the response made Jordan a media darling overnight.

Given his background as a slave, we unsurprisingly know very little about Jordan’s life prior to being taken from his parents and sold as a boy. What little historians have managed to piece together is that Anderson was born in December of 1825 “somewhere” in Tennessee. In fact, we know so little about Jordan that we’re not even sure if that’s how he actually spelled his first name, since it’s written as “Jourdan” on some documents, such as an 1870 federal census of Dayton Ohio where he lived at the time, and “Jordan” on others.

This said, historians are confident that Jordan was sold into slavery at around age 7 or 8 to one General Paulding Anderson. Anderson then took Jordan and gifted him to his son, Patrick, who went by his middle name, Henry, for most of his life. Exactly what role Jordan served during his formative years isn’t clear, but we do know that at the time it was common for slave owners to give their children similarly aged slaves to function as servants who doubled as playmates; so it’s likely Jordan served such a function for Henry who was around his age.

As he grew into a man, Jordan took a more active role on the Anderson family plantation in Big Spring, Tennessee, apparently becoming one of Henry’s most reliable and able workers. At an unknown point in time in 1848 while working on the plantation, Jordan married a fellow slave named Amanda McGregor with whom he eventually sired 11 children.

When the American Civil War began in 1861, Jordan’s life changed very little and he still continued to dutifully work the plantation for his master with his wife until one fateful day in 1864 when Union Soldiers happened upon the plantation. Upon encountering Jordan, the soldiers granted him, his wife and children their freedom, making the act official with papers from the Provost Marshal General of Nashville, documents Jordan would treasure for the rest of his life.

Upon being granted his freedom, Jordan immediately left the plantation which angered Henry to such an extent that he shot at Jordan as he was leaving, only ceasing to fire when a neighbor grabbed Henry’s pistol from him. Reportedly, Henry vowed to kill Jordan if he ever set foot on his property again.

Following his departure from the plantation, Jordan worked briefly in a Nashville field hospital, becoming close friends with a surgeon called Dr Clarke McDermont. When the Civil War ended in 1865, McDermont helped Jordan and his family move to Dayton, Ohio and put him in contact with his father-in-law, Valentine Winters, an abolitionist who helped him secure work in the town.

For the most part, Jordan’s life in Dayton was uneventful, with his time spent working with a stoic sense of quiet dignity, supporting his family and making sure his many children received a good education, something the illiterate Jordan was never given the opportunity to have. (In fact, it was noted that while still a slave, when an unspecified white girl tried to teach one of his children to read, the girl was beaten for it and forced to stop.)

Jordan’s quiet life was briefly shattered in July of 1865 when out of the blue he received an urgent letter from his former master, Henry. As Jordan couldn’t read, he took the letter to Valentine Winters and asked him to read it to him. As it turns out, following the Civil War, the Anderson Plantation had fallen into complete disrepair, as is wont to happen when your entire workforce leaves pretty much all at once. Deeply in debt, in a desperate attempt to save himself from total financial ruin, Henry reached out to the only man he knew who not only had the skills needed for the harvest, but also potentially the clout to convince some of the other slaves to return for paid work- Jordan Anderson. The letter also promised that Jordan would be paid and be treated as a free man if he returned.

At this point, most people would have screwed up the letter and thrown it in the trash while taking some sordid satisfaction in that karma was doing its job, but Jordan had a better idea. After several days of pondering the letter’s contents, he invited Winters to his home and dictated an exquisite response:

Sir: I got your letter, and was glad to find that you had not forgotten Jourdon, and that you wanted me to come back and live with you again, promising to do better for me than anybody else can. I have often felt uneasy about you. I thought the Yankees would have hung you long before this, for harboring Rebs they found at your house. I suppose they never heard about your going to Colonel Martin’s to kill the Union soldier that was left by his company in their stable. Although you shot at me twice before I left you, I did not want to hear of your being hurt, and am glad you are still living. It would do me good to go back to the dear old home again, and see Miss Mary and Miss Martha and Allen, Esther, Green, and Lee. Give my love to them all, and tell them I hope we will meet in the better world, if not in this. I would have gone back to see you all when I was working in the Nashville Hospital, but one of the neighbors told me that Henry intended to shoot me if he ever got a chance.

I want to know particularly what the good chance is you propose to give me. I am doing tolerably well here. I get twenty-five dollars a month, with victuals and clothing; have a comfortable home for Mandy,—the folks call her Mrs. Anderson,—and the children—Milly, Jane, and Grundy—go to school and are learning well. The teacher says Grundy has a head for a preacher. They go to Sunday school, and Mandy and me attend church regularly. We are kindly treated. Sometimes we overhear others saying, “Them colored people were slaves” down in Tennessee. The children feel hurt when they hear such remarks; but I tell them it was no disgrace in Tennessee to belong to Colonel Anderson. Many darkeys would have been proud, as I used to be, to call you master. Now if you will write and say what wages you will give me, I will be better able to decide whether it would be to my advantage to move back again.

As to my freedom, which you say I can have, there is nothing to be gained on that score, as I got my free papers in 1864 from the Provost-Marshal-General of the Department of Nashville. Mandy says she would be afraid to go back without some proof that you were disposed to treat us justly and kindly; and we have concluded to test your sincerity by asking you to send us our wages for the time we served you. This will make us forget and forgive old scores, and rely on your justice and friendship in the future. I served you faithfully for thirty-two years, and Mandy twenty years. At twenty-five dollars a month for me, and two dollars a week for Mandy, our earnings would amount to eleven thousand six hundred and eighty dollars. (About $178,000 today) Add to this the interest for the time our wages have been kept back, and deduct what you paid for our clothing, and three doctor’s visits to me, and pulling a tooth for Mandy, and the balance will show what we are in justice entitled to. Please send the money by Adams’s Express, in care of V. Winters, Esq.,[267] Dayton, Ohio. If you fail to pay us for faithful labors in the past, we can have little faith in your promises in the future. We trust the good Maker has opened your eyes to the wrongs which you and your fathers have done to me and my fathers, in making us toil for you for generations without recompense. Here I draw my wages every Saturday night; but in Tennessee there was never any pay-day for the negroes any more than for the horses and cows. Surely there will be a day of reckoning for those who defraud the laborer of his hire.

In answering this letter, please state if there would be any safety for my Milly and Jane, who are now grown up, and both good-looking girls. You know how it was with poor Matilda and Catherine. I would rather stay here and starve—and die, if it come to that—than have my girls brought to shame by the violence and wickedness of their young masters. You will also please state if there has been any schools opened for the colored children in your neighborhood. The great desire of my life now is to give my children an education, and have them form virtuous habits.

Say howdy to George Carter, and thank him for taking the pistol from you when you were shooting at me.

At Jordan’s behest, Winters sent the letter to Henry with the simple, informal title, “Letter from a Freedman to His Old Master”. Winters later had the letter published in an edition of the Cincinnati Commercial with the same title. The letter proved to be immensely popular, both because of the sheer level of snark displayed and the eloquence with which Jordan had told off his former “boss”. The letter was later reprinted in papers across the country and even published in parts of Europe, making Henry a world-renowned laughing stock.

Unsurprisingly, Henry never took Jordan up on his offer to pay him 50 years of wages in one go and the letter likely stopped any of his other slaves being tempted back when he wrote to them as well. As a result, the crops that year were never harvested. Henry, deeply in debt, had to sell the plantation for a fraction of its worth and he died penniless and destitute a few years later at age 44.

As for Jordan, he lived and worked in Dayton for the rest of his long life, dying at the age of 81 in 1907.

ROBIN HOOD IN REVERSE – Government has been accused of being a “willing accomplice” in robbing poor Barbadians, with Prime Minister Mia Mottley’s Budget reversing the Robin Hood approach. The charge came yesterday from Opposition Senator Caswell Franklyn, in the Senate during debate on the Appropriation Bill 2019. In his more than 90-minute contribution, Franklyn blasted the Mottley administration for heavily taxing the poor, increasing bus fares while easing taxes for slot machine owners, and sending home hundreds of workers at the bottom while bringing in big-salaried consultants. He also accused it of repaying those who supported the Barbados Labour Party during the 2018 election campaign. “Now, the IMF [International Monetary Fund] has come down and we allow them to manage our show. They see numbers, they don’t see people, and that is what they [Barbados Labour Party] were all elected to look out for, the people, the most vulnerable, and the people who are most vulnerable are not be assisted. TICKETS NO HELP TO THE POOR – Two senators believe that the discounted tickets promised by Government, will not protect or ease the most vulnerable in society. Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley outlined a discounted ticket plan Monday night aimed at easing the burden of the increase. However, Senators Caswell Franklyn and Lindell Nurse are both concerned about how the ticket will work for those who earn minimum wage and are not in a position to pay for the discounted tickets upfront. The two are equally concerned about the poor bus system. Franklyn asked: “Will the people who earn $250 a week be able to afford these ticket packages? Sometimes they are barely scrapping the $2. We have people in this country who are living pay cheque to pay cheque. These things need to be thought out before implementation. It sounds pretty. It sounds real nice but talk to the fella from St Lucy who I spoke to…” “He says they don’t have a bus on mornings so they have to catch a PSV to Speightstown then from Speightstown they have to catch a bus to Bridgetown. So a guy working in Wildey has to catch another bus. He is paying five bus fares a day. When he gets this fancy ticket will he get the discount on the minibus? I think not …” Senator Nurse pointed out that while the discounted tickets were to be lauded it would not work for the less fortunate in society. “When you have that class of person who is working for $300 a week they can’t afford that $82 up front to benefit from that discount. The discount would defeat the whole purpose for which it is set up. We hear of cases where commuters are really, really disadvantaged because of the bad inefficient system. Senator Nurse said he had no difficulty with an increase in bus fares but commuters in turn deserved “substantial improvements” to the bus system. “You cannot ask commuters to pay $3.50 and still continue with the level of indifferent, bad service which they now receive. You can’t ask them to pay $3.50 and yet they have to sit in the busstand for four hours before they can get a bus. We would hope that by putting more revenue at the Transport Board by increasing the busfares that we will see substantial improvement to the operations of the system. …” Speaking during the debate in the Upper House, Franklyn said poor people did not benefit from any of the measures in the Budget, but rather the rich gained plenty. “We had this reverse Robin Hood budget. They are putting more stress on the poor and giving the rich a free pass. You sacrifice those people at the bottom and increase the salaries of the others. You are disadvantaging the poor and helping the rich…” The trade unionist said the Public Service Vehicle (PSV) owners stand to gain more from the $1.50 increase than the Government which is counterproductive to routing cash to a hemorrhaging Transport Board. “The minibus men will get a windfall. COUNT US IN! – Privately-owned Public Service Vehicle (PSV) operators are following Government’s lead and looking at a discount system for commuters but they remain concerned that some measures, including the fare hike, may cause them to lose customers. In fact, Chairman of the Alliance Owners of Public Transport (AOPT) Roy Raphael told Barbados TODAY that operators were expecting an immediate fall off in business when the increase in bus fare takes effect on April 15, although he acknowledged that the sector had received 50 cents more than it initially requested. They fear that while their wish for a fare hike has been granted, it may turn out to be a cost to them when the fares go from $2 to $3.50 next month. “We will see a great fallout in the first place. By the 15th of April, we expect to have a fallout from the number of passengers travelling on our buses . . . . because of the discount,” he said. Yesterday, Prime Minister Mia Mottley announced that frequent travellers on Transport Board buses would pay less for their trips, and the Ministry of Transport would be meeting with PSV operators to see how they too could put systems in place for high-volume users. She explained that the ministry would issue multi-trip tickets in ten, 14, 20 and 28-trip tickets, with discounts ranging from 30-50 cents. Mottley also pointed out that the Transport Augmentation Programme (TAP) has committed 40 PSVs to work on Transport Board routes. Raphael told Barbados TODAY PSV operators welcomed the TAP and were willing to meet with the ministry on the matter of implementing a discount system on PSVs, adding that it was something that was already discussed among the members. “There is no way we can survive as owners and operators of PSVs under the conditions in which the bus fare was given. The $3.50 we welcome, but I believe for us to really capitalize on it we have to roll out a few initiatives that will see more people catching our buses,” said Raphael. “Long before the Prime Minister talked about that we felt we had to meet. Actually, we have a cashless system that we are going to be rolling out very shortly, where you will buy a ticket and a discount will be given to you. We have already started to look at it – a PSV discount card – we are going to roll out that probably in the next two to three weeks when we will have our first bus out there with the cashless system,” he explained. He said PSV operators also feared they would lose passengers because of government’s decision to have more cross-country routes for Transport Board buses that would eliminate the need for commuters to go to Bridgetown, from where the bulk of PSV buses operate. “For example, those people working in Warrens (St Michael) and Six Roads (St Philip) will not want to go into Bridgetown so that will be a fall-off for us. We wont be able to access those commuters,” he explained. He is also of the view that the behaviour of some PSV operators would cause the travelling public to gravitate more towards the Transport Board buses. However, pointing out that the AOPT was closer to implementing a command centre to monitor the behaviour of PSV operators and root out the bad apples, Raphael issued a stern warning that the days of bad behaviour of operators were numbered. “If you are able to improve your customer relations you will get more people travelling on your bus, but you can’t continue with the loud playing of music or the use of alcohol. Those days are numbered,” he warned. Stressing that it simply cannot be business as usual for PSV operators, he also pointed out that commuters would have to play a greater role in helping delinquent PSV operators to clean up their act, while explaining that many of the court cases against PSV operators involved passengers catching the mini-bus or ZR van at a location other than a bus stop. “The driver and conductor are not to be blamed solely because sometimes the passengers deliberately [stop them away from a bus stop],” he said. “We would like the support of the passengers, the travelling public and everybody to make things right. It cannot be a one-way situation,” he added. He said when the PSV operators meet with the Ministry of Transport officials in the coming days, they would also be discussing outstanding issues including the lack of access to duty-free concessions and high insurance costs. BUS AVAILABILITY WILL PUT STRAIN ON STUDENTS – The increase in bus fares will have a negative impact on families already struggling to send their children to school, President of the Barbados Association of Guidance Counsellors (BAGC) Margaret Grant has said. However, she said it was an opportunity for schools and non-governmental organisations to come together to create different programmes to help those most in need. As from April 15, bus fares will increase from $2 to $3.50. Grant said while school children would still ride free on the Transport Board buses while in uniform there were many of them who simply could not catch those buses because of the constraints facing the board. “In every school there is a programme that is designed to help students who are in need whether it be breakfast or lunch and busfare. Seeing that the Transport Board has the school children free, that is not an issue but we know also that the Transport Board has its limitations so some children are forced to catch the private PSVs,” said Grant who was speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the 13th National Career Showcase at the Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre. “I think it will also push schools, parent teacher associations, NGOs to now come together and see how we can help each other. But at the same time, rather than looking out, within each school I think there are some programmes that can be developed – we can have some fundraising events that can really go towards a fund to help children who are in need. So I think it is just a need to look out for each other and being creative at the same time,” said Grant. (BT)

EASTMOND OUT – Come tomorrow, the fledgling United Progressive Party (UPP) will have a new leader. That’s because current chairman Lynette Eastmond will not be contesting Wednesday’s elections when a new Executive Committee is named. In an interview with Barbados TODAY, Eastmond, who founded the UPP in 2016, confirmed she would not be running for the post. She said Ambrose Grosvenor, Everton Holligan and Wayne Griffith had so far signaled their intention to contest the top position. In a release the UPP said “The United Progressive Party is in the process of choosing its Executive Committee for 2019-2020. Nominations for positions are being processed via online nominations and voting which also helps to facilitate our overseas membership. The names and positions of the new UPP executive will be made public on Friday March 29, 2019.” Eastmond explained: “I thought it would be appropriate to give as many people in the party as possible as much exposure as possible because obviously we are training up people in order to be able to take up big roles in Government,” Eastmond explained. “It’s important that we have different individuals who can step up and lead the party.” However, Eastmond maintained her decision not to run for chairman was not a signal she would be joining Opposition Leader Joseph Atherley in his soon-to-be formed political party. “No this doesn’t signal anything. I know nothing of Atherley’s plans,” Eastmond replied when asked of her plans to possibly join him. But political scientist Peter Wickham told Barbados TODAY he believed the party would falter without Eastmond at the helm. He said that while her decision not to seek re-election was surprising, the move did not “move the political needle one way or the other”. In fact, Wickham suggested it would be more beneficial if Eastmond and Atherley joined forces. “I think that without her as the chairman, the party will eventually come to nothing. The party was really about Lynette Eastmond, she was the face of the organisation. “There’s talk of an alliance between herself and the current Opposition leader. I think they are curious bedfellows…but politics is always the order of convenience and I think that is a convenient relationship now, largely because they are both opposition operatives that want to gain some level of relevance,” Wickham pointed out. “She can bring some structure to his party. He wants to form a party so he can benefit from the funds which are available for parties in Parliament, so he has something that she wants and she has something that he wants, so ideally it’s a marriage of convenience.” However, Eastmond, an attorney-at-law by profession said even though the UPP did not win any seats in the 2018 elections, she still believed the party was relevant. She contended there was room for political parties apart from the Barbados Labour Party (BLP) and the Democratic Labour Party (DLP). “Since the last election the UPP has been making its contribution to the Barbados democracy by reviewing policy, critiquing them and giving our own recommendations with respect to those policies. “We think that is important for democracy and we think it is important for Barbados to be able to listen to more than two voices in a democratic space and that is what we are about. We are making a contribution and we know people are listening and hearing us and we are going to continue in that vein,” Eastmond said. (BT)

PROSECUTE THEM – Senator Caswell Franklyn believes those companies which owe Government large sums of unpaid Value Added Tax should face criminal prosecution. As debate on the Appropriation Bill moved to the Upper Chamber today, the lawmaker said those who collected VAT as an agent of Government but did not hand it over were essentially stealing from the Crown and should face criminal charge. Senator Caswell said: “It is a crime. The [Director of Public Prosecutions] can choose not to prosecute. Stealing VAT is a crime in this country that should be prosecuted. I don’t know who is being protected or who is being hidden. I don’t want to guess. But those people need to come before the courts and face a judge or magistrate and be sentenced for their crime. The VAT that you collect is not yours. I will not rest when people are stealing and getting away with it.” The trade unionist said the VAT funds owed to Government could be put to better use. He then chastised the Prime Minister for forgiving defaulters. He told the Senate: “We are suffering by people not paying the relevant taxes. You fail to collect the taxes from them and you also write off the taxes that they owe… people who owe taxes for years. We met in here in December to write off taxes to benefit the people who should be in jail for not paying taxes. Now we are proposing also to write off the VAT from 1996 to 2000 for people who actually stole it. “Government is giving away money that is not theirs to give away. This elitist Government that we have elected that said ‘Gimmuh de vote and watch muh’… well the people are watching and they don’t like what they are seeing . . . . Stop thinking about friends and family and look out for the best interest of this country.” Senator Franklyn told the Upper House that while he understood that some businesses are facing financial challenges and may not be able to pay salary and income tax, VAT was in a different category. He added: “If you are in business you may not make enough money to pay the salaries and the taxes. However, VAT is money you actually receive. So when you get it pay it over. When you collect VAT you are doing so as an agent of Government and when you refuse to pay that money, you are depriving the country… because you are stealing the money. And then the Government would decide to forgive thieves. The Government has no authority to forgive thieves.” (BT)

OPPOSTION LEADER: PLASTIC FINES TOO HARD – A ceiling of $50,000 on fines for sellers and importers of plastic bags is way too high, Opposition Leader Joseph Atherley has told Parliament. He contends that the measure, which is part of the Control of Disposable Plastics Bill, was onerous and could cripple small businesses. He argued that instead of a one-size-fits-all approach to the deterrent component of the bill, the ceiling should have been lowered for those caught using plastics in their retail businesses. Atherley told the House: “I have serious concerns about the hefty fines for infringements on the ban on plastics beyond the given date. I believe those fines are too high. You could have made two separate stipulations, one that applies to the importers and manufacturers and another for the sellers. Charging the manufacturers and importers $50,000 is fine but I am not comfortable with it being so high for the sellers, especially the small vendors.” Introducing the bill in the Lower House, Minister of Maritime Affairs and the Blue Economy Kirk Humphrey revealed that businesses breaching the ban, which was extended from April 1 to July 1, could be made to pay $50,000 in fines or face a year in jail if convicted. Under the new legislation, offenders would also have to pay a further $1,000 for each day or part thereof during which the offence continues after their conviction. But Atherley said that while he understands Government’s rationale for such measures, he was not comfortable with giving a magistrate such a wide scope of discretionary power. He said: “We trust the competence and the compassion of our judicial officers, but I don’t know why the law would have to prescribe for a $50,000 fine. Could you imagine what would happen if a Magistrate gets up in not too good a mood and hands down an $8,000 fine to a small shop owner or vendor? Such a fine would cripple that business overnight. I understand the principle of the ceiling up to $50,000 but this is left to the discretion of the Magistrate or the judge and I have my concerns about that.” Atherley has said that business owners who stand to lose out as a result of the soon-to-be implemented ban on single-use plastics in Barbados should be compensated by Government. The ban meant that jobs would be lost, at a time when Government was also looking to make cuts in the public service, he added. During debate in Parliament on Monday, Atherley said that there are people who are involved in enterprises, whose main business relates to the use of plastics and this ban and the breadth of it will have implications for them going forward and their jobs He said: “This loss in their case will not be as a result of bad business practices. It will not be resulting from failure of their business…but they now will be forced to suffer economically and financially because of this measure, through no fault of their own.” (BT)

TOO FEW SCHOOL COUNSELLORS – Guidance counsellors across the education system are under tremendous pressure having to deal with three times the ideal number of students. This assessment has come from President of the Barbados Association of Guidance Counsellors (BAGC) Margaret Grant, who is calling on individuals and organisations across the island to help provide guidance for students who were experiencing “difficulties”. She said while guidance counsellors would receive help from various community leaders and associations in cash or kind, they were still under pressure. “Sometimes we only see crisis when they really happen, but many times there are signals that we tend to ignore. We need to, as a people, wake up and recognize that all of our children need help, not just the ones that you might think have issues. We have children in every school that need help,” Grant told reporters at the 13th National Career Showcase at the Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre. Every public secondary school in Barbados currently has one guidance counsellor, with the exception of St George Secondary and St Leonard’s Boys’ School, that have two each. At the same time, Deputy Chief Education Officer responsible for schools Joy Adamson revealed that the Ministry of Education currently has only two social workers and one senior psychologist to man all the secondary and primary schools. However, she said the Sandy Lane Charitable Trust has provided an additional six individuals to give assistance at the primary school level and other non-governmental organisations were giving a helping hand. Adamson said that Government was aware of the situation and was working to make sure that the needed resources were made available over time. Grant told reporters that the situation of one guidance counsellor for up to 1,100 students was “really not saying anything”. “I say that because for the model that we use it is really designed for one counsellor to 250 students. So when you look at having one counsellor in a school of 900, 1,000 or 1,100, we are really disadvantaging the children,” said Grant. She said, ideally, each secondary school in Barbados needed a guidance counsellor, a psychologist and a social worker in order to effectively tackle the myriad of challenges students were faced with and to help guide them in the areas of career and personal development. Grant explained that besides how to cope with concerns relating to puberty, students needed to be taught health and family life education, how to deal with social issues and burdens, as well as career planning. “It is not just the children who come out of crisis situations . . . we are faced with situations every day, there are follow up cases that you have to see,” said Grant, who explained that sometimes there were walk-in cases that required guidance counsellors to “drop everything and do crisis intervention”. “Then you have bereavement counselling, you have children who are abused, children who have poor self-esteem, who are struggling in school and have lost interest in school. These are real problems. Then you have children who want to get out of a situation, they are carrying the burden so to speak, for the family or the community. We see it every day, and as counsellors our heart goes out to these children because we can only do so much,” she added. The trained guidance counsellor said while some people would argue that parents of some of those students could seek help from a private psychologist or psychiatrist, many of them simply could not afford it. “We need urgent help. So I would reiterate that, yes, I understand the economic situation in Barbados right now but I think we need to recognise that a team effort is needed,” said Grant, who said more help from the community was also required. It was in her mini-budget last June that Prime Minister Mia Mottley first announced that a special scheme would be implemented, which would see the introduction of school safety officers, social workers and guidance counsellors. However, she said given the financial constraints, the initiative would initially cover only seven schools. “In addition we will introduce a new designation of Master Teacher so that we may allow our best teachers to remain in teaching and to be compensated in so doing,” said Mottley, who pointed out that this, along with initiatives to address issues relating to nurses, would cost government approximately $6 million. STAFF CUTS STALL CHILD MONEY – It is almost the end of March and a mother is crying out that she hasn’t received a cent in child maintenance from the court for the year. However, the Registrar of the Supreme Court says the retrenchment programme is to blame for the lack of staff to deal with the disbursement of such monies. The mother, who only spoke on condition of anonymity, told the NATION Monday night that the funds would be deducted from the salary of her daughter’s father and sent to St Matthias Magistrates’ Court around the 20th or 21st of each month. “I would normally get a cheque, because you don’t collect the money anymore; they send cheques out to you. They mail out money twice a month – the middle and end of the month. Most of the time I get the money at the beginning of the next month. I have not received any money at all for the year – January, February, and I still waiting for March,” she lamented. (MWN)

TIGHT SECURITY AT POLYCLINIC - Security is now tight at Barbados’ most visited polyclinic, after it reopened to the public yesterday following a one-week shutdown. And while it meant long lines and delays in getting into the facility, staff and patients welcomed the new measures at the Winston Scott Polyclinic in Jemmotts Lane, St Michael. The beefed-up security stemmed from recent incidents which left nurses traumatised and in tears. One involved a patient chasing another with a chair, and the other a patient brandishing a knife, which prompted a work stoppage last Wednesday. Patients and visitors are now being scanned by security officials using hand-held metal detectors. But there is still cleaning up going on, as the polyclinic was only able to reach about a 70 per cent capacity yesterday, a senior nurse told the NATION. (MWN)

MOM MUST PAY FOR ‘MISSING’ SON – An accused who left the jurisdiction has left his mother who posted bail on his behalf with a court-imposed financial burden. The mother now has five months to come up with $2,500, half of the amount that she put up as collateral for her son Ryan Anthony Omar Bentham, of Brewsters Road, Worthings, Christ Church. He is accused of committing serious indecency on a nine-year-old child between August 12, 2012 and May 9, 2013. The case has been before Magistrate Douglas Frederick but stalled when Bentham stopped appearing at the District ‘A’ Magistrates’ Court. Today his mother informed the magistrate that she nor the accused’s five children have heard from him in a while. She further explained that his ex girlfriend spoke to him sometime back but he did not give information on his whereabouts, only asking about the wellbeing of his children. “Your son has no regard for you,” Frederick said. The magistrate then informed her that she would have to forfeit half of the bail amount on or before August 20, 2019. A warrant remains out for Bentham’s arrest. (BT)

‘COMPLEX’ MATTER ADJOURNED – Bridgetown Magistrate Douglas Frederick has made it clear to six accused who are currently on remand on a series of “complex” matters that the cases against them will not be dismissed anytime soon. The District ‘A’ Magistrate made his position known after one of the men asked for a final adjournment in the case after the prosecutor informed the court that there was a file in the matter that was not yet completed. Station Sergeant Carrison Henry was referring to several matters involving 27-year-old Richard Shamario Worrell, of Derriston Road, Grazettes, St Michael; 21-year-old Rachad Justin Bowen and 21-year-old Ranako Kadeaine Brathwaite, both of Fairfield Cross Road, Tudor Bridge, St Michael; 28-year-old Adigun Rabbi Hinds, of 5A, Maddison Terrace, Deacons, St Michael; 17-year-old Malik Derick Fenty, of 2nd Avenue, Redman Road, Deacons, St Michael and 28-year-old Richad Barry Boyce, of 2nd Avenue, Kellman Road, Black Rock, St Michael. “Sir I would like a final adjournment,” Worrell told Frederick this afternoon after the prosecutor requested an adjournment in the cases. The men have been on remand at HMP Dodds since May 2018. Among the charges, the six men are jointly accused of discharging a firearm along Fairfield Road in a manner that placed a man in danger of death or serious bodily harm. It is further alleged that they had possession of two 9 mm caliber pistols, two 40 caliber pistols, 17 rounds of 40mm caliber ammunition and 29 rounds of 9 mm caliber ammunition on May 20, 2018, while Hinds, Fenty, Bowen, Boyce and Worrell are alleged to have discharged a firearm along Kew Road on the same date which placed four people in danger of death or serious bodily harm. “There had to be a reason for the police to charge we . . . so [the file being incomplete] means they do not have enough evidence in the matter,” Worrell stated. That argument did not move Frederick who responded: “This is a complicated matter. This is not an old matter . . . it involves not one accused but several . . . all these things are alleged to have happened at the same time, so it is a complex. “Right now society is crying out about firearms in these types of occurrences . . . . I am not going to dismissed this matter in any hurry,” Frederick said. However, Hinds and Worrell stated that they were currently in prison and the current situation has “nothing to do with we”. The six have been remanded to Dodds for a further 28 days. (BT)

BURGLAR PLACED ON BOND – A St Michael man has been placed on a bond for the next six months after he was found guilty of burglary in the District ‘A’ Magistrates’ Court today. However, Matthew Renaldo Boyce of 130 Denton Road, Grazette Housing Area continued to maintain his innocence even after Magistrate Douglas Frederick told him the evidence against him was overwhelming. Boyce who was 26 years old at the time of the offence was charged with entering the home of Keryn Carrington as a trespasser and stealing a $500 cellular phone. “I feel the system making a big mistake. I feel like I am being made a scapegoat for something I didn’t do,” Boyce stated. However, the Magistrate told him the evidence against him proved otherwise. “The evidence against you is overwhelming. The problem is that you have some serious issues. When a fella drunk or under the influence and does something, the next day he swears that he didn’t do it. . . . But in this case there was convincing evidence,” Frederick stated before imposing the bond. If Boyce breaches the order he will spend three months in prison. He remains on $3,000 bail and will return to court on April 18, 2019 when another burglary case against him will continue. (BT)

CHARGES AGAINST JUSSIE SMOLLETT DROPPED – Illinois prosecutors on Tuesday dropped charges that accused Empire actor Jussie Smollett of staging a phony hate crime attack to gain publicity, an incident that attracted international attention, his lawyers said. Cook County prosecutors said in a statement that they had dropped the charges but did not make clear if anyone would be charged for the attack, in which Smollett said his assailants put a noose around his neck and poured bleach on him. The decision, which emerged at a brief court hearing in Chicago, was the latest dizzying twist since Smollett, a gay black man who plays a gay musician on the Fox hip-hop drama, told police in January two masked men attacked him while yelling racist and homophobic slurs and expressing support for US President Donald Trump. Prosecutors brought felony charges against Smollett after concluding he had paid his supposed attackers to stage the assault in an effort to advance his career and secure higher pay. Smollett’s lawyers in a statement said the attack occurred as the actor described, calling him a “victim who was vilified and made to appear as a perpetrator”. Smollett briefly addressed reporters after the hearing, saying, “I’ve been truthful and consistent on every single level since day one.” “After reviewing all of the facts and circumstances of the case, including Mr Smollett’s volunteer service in the community and agreement to forfeit his bond to the City of Chicago, we believe this outcome is a just disposition and appropriate resolution to this case,” the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office said in a statement. Smollett had pleaded not guilty to the charges against him in a Chicago court on March 14. The case garnered an outpouring of support for Smollett on social media, including from celebrities and several Democratic presidential candidates. Two brothers were arrested after they were recognised from surveillance footage. But prosecutors accused Smollett of writing a $3 500 check to the brothers and giving them money to buy rope, ski masks, gloves and red baseball caps, all in an effort to use the attack’s notoriety to raise his profile. A spokesman for 20th Century Fox Television said the network and studio did not have any immediate comment. In a statement, Smollett’s family said he was “falsely accused”. “He was the victim of an assault and then falsely blamed for his own attack,” the family said. “While many were quick to rush to judgment before hearing the actual truth, we are grateful that the truth about Jussie has come to light.” (MWN)

SOUTHWEST 737 MAX 8 PASSENGER-LESS FLIGHT LANDS SAFELY AFTER DECLARING EMERGENCY – A Southwest Airlines Co Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft without passengers and of the type that was grounded two weeks ago, landed safely on Tuesday after declaring an emergency over an engine-related problem leaving Orlando International Airport in Florida, the US Federal Aviation Administration said. The plane was headed to Victorville, California for repositioning but returned safely to Orlando at about 2:50 p.m. (1850 GMT). The FAA grounded the 737 MAX following two fatal crashes since October but has allowed airlines to conduct flights without passengers to move planes to other airports. A Boeing spokesman said it the company was “aware of the incident and supporting our customer.” Southwest did not immediately comment. (Reuters)

NO BCA FALLOUT – The results of the Cricket West Indies (CWI) elections will have no impact on the operations of the Barbados Cricket Association (BCA). BCA first vice-president Calvin Hope, made it clear there will be no fall-out even though the local body did not support Ricky Skerritt’s triumphant bid for the presidency of CWI. “The Barbados Cricket Association is 126 years old. West Indies cricket cannot do without Barbados cricket, Barbados has to lead. “Barbados cricket supports West Indies’ cricket through thick and thin. So because one may assume or one may feel, that the BCA supported a candidate that did not win, does that mean the BCA will stop operating at the highest level it has always operated on? “This is not the first time the BCA has supported someone that didn’t win. A West Indies cricket board president does not operate at a secular level. No president has ever done that. He is the president of Cricket West Indies not the president of those who voted for him,” Hope said. (MWN)

TENNIS BRONZE FOR MEN, WOMEN – Barbados earned bronze medals in both the men’s and women’s team events yesterday at the Pan American Qualifying Table Tennis Championships being played at the Cliff Anderson Hall, Georgetown, Guyana. The Bajan men played with authority in the group exchanges, losing only to the Dominican Republic on the way to a semi-final berth against Puerto Rico. The Puerto Ricans proved too much in the semi-finals for Barbados who had to share the bronze medal position with Guyana after they went under to the Dominican Republic. The Dominican Republic went on to beat Puerto Rico 3-0 in the final to defend their title. The Bajan women finished third in a round-robin contest in which they defeated St Kitts and Nevis as well as Jamaica. Against Jamaica, Janae Lewis led the team to a 3-1 victory by beating Sandra Riettie 11-2, 11-6, 11-4. (MWN)

STANDING TALL – Fifteen-year-old Harrison College student Samara Murrell is looking forward to saying goodbye to a pain she has known all her life. From a toddler, a brave Samara has been fighting a battle with a painful growth disorder that has warped her legs and affected her ability to walk. The disorder was made even more painful when people who were ignorant to her condition laughed at her. But October 17, 2018 marked a new beginning for the teenager. She underwent corrective surgery for Blount’s disease at the St Louis Shriners Children’s Hospital, a US$500 000, 18-hour procedure that was paid for by the Sandy Lane Charitable Trust. “All I can say is that I am forever grateful to those who played a role in helping me to get to where I am today. It has not been easy. But since the surgery I have been going to physiotherapy and everything is going well so far. “My feet are hurting a little, but it is good to be back out,” Samara told Barbados TODAY last Friday, while in the stands at the National Stadium where she took in the action on the final day of the Barbados Secondary Schools’ Athletic Championship (BSSAC). Standing with the assistance of crutches and fixators on her legs, Samara said returning to school on February 25, after five months of recovery, which is ongoing, was a humbling and heartwarming experience. She had been away from school since September 2018. “When I went back everybody was willing to help me. My classmates and even teachers are willing to carry my bag for me. But I like to keep positive. “It would have been a little hard. Sometimes I don’t want to get up; sometimes I don’t want to go to physiotherapy. But at the end of the day I will be walking strong. The road to recovery isn’t easy, but it can only benefit me positively,” she said. Commonly mistaken for ‘bow legs’, Blount’s disease is a growth disorder that affects the bones of the lower leg, causing them to bow outward. It can affect people at any time during the growing process, but it is more common in children younger than four and those in their teens. Samara’s mother, Faye Murrell, is also extremely happy to see the progress the first of four children has been making. “The tears were worth it. When you see her now, you can see that the legs are perfectly aligned. For the first time in her life, both are aligned. It is just about healing right now,” Faye said. Faye who accompanied the teenager to St Louis, Missouri, said that while she was now feeling a sense of joy, she would never like to walk that road with her daughter again. The 42-year-old said it was the most difficult thing she has ever done in her life. She said she often had to leave the room to wipe away tears so that Samara would not see them. “From the very next day after Samara had the surgery, they had her up, on her legs and walking round. That in itself was a big difference for us, because here in the Caribbean we are accustomed to having a surgery and lying down. “But with that programme you were up and moving around. Of course, she was on a lot of pain medication because she was in a lot of pain. There are no excuses. She had physiotherapy for hours at a time, whether you wanted to do it or not. With this type of programme if you don’t move, the pain gets worse and they would have to take you back to surgery,” Faye said. The mother recalled that in addition to having to force herself to move around while enduring a lot of pain, her young child also had to be treated for multiple infections. Samara is currently fighting an infection. “There are different wires and screws that are going through the bone, and everything is exposed. So as you could appreciate, you are picking up whatever is in your environment. I mean I have been going with Samara and supporting her through umpteenth surgeries, and this was a first for us,” she explained. “But I must commend Samara for being brave, because it is not easy. If I had to show you the videos we took as she was progressing and how they were turning these devices in the legs, at different degrees every day. That was somebody turning your bone every day. “She shed a lot of tears but she did not quit. At one point they were saying she wouldn’t be able to return to Barbados in December as was planned, but like more around April, because of the amount of healing and getting her up walking and stuff like that. “And Samara took a child’s crutches and walked with them, and they freaked out. The doctors could not believe what they were seeing. And they give her her own crutches and allowed her to come home”. To assist the teenager, who competed in the 2017 Junior Monarch Competition to stay on top of her school work, Harrison College provided an alternative three-tier programme that included tutoring during last summer vacation, online tutoring via Google Classroom while she recovered in Missouri, and a combination of face-to-face and online teaching as she underwent therapy treatment in Barbados. Faye said her family was grateful to Harrison College for ensuring that Samara does not suffer academically. While in Missouri, Samara’s story was highlighted by the CBS network. She also opened for international recording artiste Javier Mendoza during his popular Christmas Charity event, and was featured on the front cover of Town and Style Magazine, a trendy publication featuring the who’s and who of Missouri. Faye thanked The World Pediatric Project, Sandy Lane Charitable Trust, Sagicor General, John Roett, Hilton Hotel, Faith New Testament Church of God, Pegwell Community Church, Soaring Eagles Ministries, Home Away Ministries, and the principal and deputy principal and teachers at Harrison College for going above and beyond to ensure that Samara was comfortable whilst at school. Auto Insurance Question on a Hit and Run?

My boyfriend is not listed on my insurance because he has a company vehicle that his boss lets him drive. Anyway today he decided to take my car to go pick up our daughter from school. Anyway I was out shopping later this evening and got a phone call from my partner stating that the cops were at our house and wanted to see my insurance slips and ownership. So I went home and gave them all the information. They ended up letting my husband go on fleeing the scene of a accident but gave him a $110 fine for failing to report the incident. Now here's what I am wondering, I have to call my insurance company tomorrow and notify them that he was driving my car and let them know all the information but I'm unsure what will happen? I can almost guarantee that my insurance will go up but is there any regulations about hitting a parked car within a private parking lot? I know that if she decides to go through the insurance company (which I'm sure she is because she gave all her information to the cop) then I was told I am able to request that she gets 3 quotes from 3 different places so that she doesn't try to stiff me and go for the most expensive. The cop also told me that I have the option to call her and maybe see if she will take cash but I know this teacher and she is one of the worst teachers I have ever met so I highly doubt she will be so accepting of the money. The cop also told us that he went to go view the damage on her vehicle and he said the front number was cracked so it would need to be replaced. He said it's not extensive damage at all but damage nonetheless. What is my best bet in this situation? I am screwed either way? Because I know when I signed up for insurance one of the questions she asked was is there any other licensed drivers in the household and I told her no but my boyfriend is a licensed driver but just doesn't drive my car. I was involved in an accident in which I struck a vehicle in the rear on 11/15/2004. It was not a bad collision and I was starting to walk-up to ask the driver of the other vehicle if he was okay, when a car rear-ended me and then two more cars hit that vehicle pushing my jeep under the vehicle which I had hit causing severe damage in excess of $3500. My insurnce payed the driver I hit, but I have not received a dime from farmers insurance. I placed a call to the insured vehicle that strcuk me and they told me to use my insurance company to hash-out all the details and to collect funds for repair my vehicle. I told this to my insurance agent (Progressive) and they said they would do that but I didn't have full coverage so that will not happen, I need to deal with the other partie's insurance companies. I have no Idea where to go from here. If I had the money, I would get a lawyer and I am sure that I would have this resolved right now. Does anyone have an idea for me? peace""

I got my window broken when someone broke into my car and I had an appt at the dealership where I bought to the car to get it repaired ASAP (and was going to) but my insurance nixed the idea. They said they wouldnt pay a dime if I did that. I HAVE to go to their suggested business. Now I have to drive to and from work with a taped up window for 2 more days till THEIR guy can fit me in. My car is a 1994 Lexus ES300 with 125,000+ miles on it. I would say it is in good or fair condition, the leather seats are cracking badly and it has a few scrathes, etc. I'm just wandering if it is in my best interest to repair this car or for it to be totaled out. The estimate for repairs in $3500.00, which could always go up once repairs start for unseen damage. I'm just not sure the car is worth repairing for that amount considering its condition. The damage is to the drivers side rear panel which is now rubbing something when I turn either way or go over any kind of bump in the road. The estimate does not consider repair for that since that could not be seen by looking at the vehicle. But that includes the price of the land, etc. I now have to renew the home insurance policy and realized maybe I should reduce the amount of the coverage from $96,000 to around $80,000. The dwelling amount for the insurance has been the price I paid for, $96,000. But if something happens and the house needs to get rebuild, the cost of building should not be as high as $96,000.
