I wanted to translate this one post from a Chinese RWRB fan on Weibo that summarized a lot of Taylor did on the day of GQ events and how the fans felt about him, because it’s really sweet

Translation:

He laid down on the bow of the boat to sign for fans. And for the fans who didn’t come, he accepted taking video calls to say hi to them. He made hand hearts with fans, and when a fan asked to hold his hand, he didn’t even hesitate. He wrote “I flew across the ocean to see you” when signing books. He even shaved his facial hair which he kept for a long time to match the taste of the people around him, transforming back to ACD. Taylor sincerely praises every single staff member he crosses paths with and treats them like new friends. He’s spreading happiness with so much passion.

There’s still so much more, Taylor is just such a wonderful person, he’s just the best. 😭

The translation of Taylor's name in the original post isn't his official translated name 泰勒 (tài lè, or "thai"-"le") which is just phonic, it's the fan translation 忒樂 (tè lè, or "Tay"-"le" ) which is arguably more phonic and means "too happy"

Regarding the dress code thing, all of Taylor’s outfits from yesterday came from a Chinese local menswear brand that was established in 1980

Regarding his facial hair, the beauty standards of China prefer men to be clean-shaven. If you look at mainland Chinese celebrities of Taylor’s age, unless a role demands it, which is really rare, they rarely keep facial hair. I honestly don’t know if this was the reason Taylor shaved, this part in the post is just speculation, but there is this connection.

Regarding the excessive use of the word sincere, there really isn’t a better word (at least in my vocabulary) to describe what the op meant. But sincerity is a really, really treasured quality to Chinese people

Please understand that Chinese celebrity culture and fan culture is pretty different from Western celebrity culture and fan culture, so certain things they did are viewed differently on this side of the web/ world. ok so I have no idea how to tag the anonymous but here you go!

so there are great Y novels (known as m/m romance in western writing and danmei in china, not sure about korea) and there are terrible ones.

There are a few key things to look for:

1. When and where was it written - early chinese danmei, before censorship got hardcore can be VERY dodgy and full of non consensual or dubious consensual sex as well as really harmful tropes for example... in contrast later censored danmei may not have enough smut for you - it all depends on your tastes! If it was written on a fanfic site or wattpad then it could be good or really really terrible!!

2. Is it a self published web novel (or kindle)? If yes, then there is no way of knowing if it is any good. Some self published authors are wonderful, despite having no editor or publisher. Usually working or studying full time while writing, they produce amazing content. Priest, Meatbun, Mo Xiang Tong Xiu, Chai Jidan and Wu Zhe are prime example of this from China. If no, then there has probably been some editing and proof reading but the book could still be bad!

3. Who translated it? So if the novel is not officially translated, and you did not pay for the translation then the book could be amazing and what you read might suck anyway. Some authors will give fan translators permission to translate but there is no guarantee of quality. If you want high quality translations of Thai Y novels where the author actually gets money for their efforts you should be buying these things on Meb. There are also some great translation sites where you can pay a patreon or other subscription cost to read a decently translated version but the author may not get anything from that and since they are still usually fan translations there will always be a possibility of quality issues.

But to answer your real question are all Y novels bad... definitely not.

Are Thai Y novels worse than Japanese, Korean, Chinese or western m/m fiction? Nope, there are heaps of good and bad in all... it’s just that when the original was not written in English you risk a great book being a poor translation, so they have two chances to be a bad read not just one. This is true for all us non Thai/Korean/Japanese or Mandarin readers. But i can tell you now I have read a lot of English language m/m content published on Kindle (which has reasonably high standards for editing etc) and some of those books are badly written too!

Next we have the issue of taste. Like BL shows, you end up with the same issues where some really great novels almost everyone will love, but others are divisive. Some people do not like smut in their novels, others will stop reading a  book if it doesn't have enough smut! There are plenty of tropes and conventions used in western m/m novels as well, they are just different from yaoi/danmei tropes and conventions. Western m/m content is less likely to have dub con stuff unless the book is specifically written in the bully trope but they can cover all sorts of sexual interests and tastes that some people really don’t like such as age play, hardcore bdsm including blood and knife play etc.

The bottom line...

Only you know what you like and don't like and the only way to know for sure is to try it and read. 

I am perfectly willing and able to give recommendations, but because i have read 100s of translated novels and many 1000s of m/m western novels you have to give me some likes and dislikes to help shape my answer!

I say dive in, there are so many WONDERFUL stories out there...

this might be a hot take but I haven't read any Y novels mostly because I've gotten the impression most of them are kind of.... awful? Or at the very least employ a lot tropes I'm uncomfortable with.

I cannot really comment on this. I tried to read a few and what I found is that the way written Thai translates into written English doesn't work for my taste in books and writing style. I can't comment on tropes or anything else.

But I try not to judge an entire genre by any one specific metric. There could be tons of good ones in there that I don't know about and there could be tons of toxic ones that I do (see: Mame Cinematic Universe also available in Y novel form!)

I just don't know anything about this side of the fandom.

In average, a buffet breakfast in the hotel cost around 250 bhat that usually is included in the room price. Consider this extra cost if you decide to bring a Thai girl with you.

Personally, I prefer having breakfast in the small shops around Chiang Mai because is cheaper (below 100 baht) and the girls prefer it to the hotel buffet.

Make sure that the hotel is girl friendly. In other words, you don’t get charged extra for bringing back girls to your room. Not only is embarrassing but it can cost up to 1.000 baht per girl.

I didn’t pay any extra during my stay in Chiang Mai…

• Food and Drinks Prices

Chiang Mai has some of the best food Thailand has to offer. These cuisine doesn’t damage the wallet either with plenty of options.

Street food can range from 30 baht to 80 Baht per dish. Expect to double that amount when sitting in a standard Thai restaurant which can reach up to 600 Baht for two.

When dining in a higher class establishment usually serving Western food, costs can surmount to 1000 baht per person and higher, should you order alcoholic drinks.

• Cost of Transportation in Chiang Mai

From Chiang Mai Airport

Chiang Mai airport is located a short distance from the city center. Songathaew and tuk-tuks are readily available to provide taxi services outside the terminal building and the fastest way to reach town.

Expect to pay 160 baht for a taxi to most destinations in the city, while the return trip to the airport costs around 100 baht.

Check with your hotel to see if they provide this service, most arrange free transfer to and from the airport.

Inside Chiang Mai

There are lots of ways to get around Chiang Mai; Perhaps the most common is by songthaew (a shared transport pick up trucks) with fares around 30 baht.

Taxi apps such as grab are also available and doubling the cost of a songathaew depending on where you want to go.

Tuk Tuks litter the city which includes an authentic Thailand experience. Expect to pay up to 100 baht per trip.

Lastly, there are buses available which start at cost of a very affordable 20 baht.

• Cost For Entertainments

Most girls will ask 2.000 baht for short time, but the standard rate is between 1.000 to 1.500 baht. The cost of all night is highly negotiable starting at 2.000 baht.

Go Go girls shot for the highest price as a way to test you and see how far they can go in taking your money. Don’t let them play around, you’re the master and you decide her pay.

2. Beer Girlie Bars Prices in Chiang Mai

There are many beer bars in Chiang Mai but most are located in Loi Kroh Road, inside the Chiang Mai Entertainment Complex where I’ve counted 25 beer bars.

Everything is slightly cheaper than Go Go bars, with drinks around 70-160 baht, bar fine at 500 baht and lady drinks on 130-150 baht range.

The girls ask for short time about 2000 Baht, but personally I offer 1.000 baht for a standard girl and max 1.500 baht for a hot and young spinner. For long time, 2.000+ baht.

3. Night Clubs Prices in Chiang Mai

Chaing Mai has a good variety of nightclubs where you can party while picking up Thai women but also foreign girls.

The clubs located in Nimman – Soi 7 & 9 are mostly oriented to Thai people. The entrance is free, the booze is cheap all below 100 baht while most of the girls are genuine and not freelancing.

Always in Nimman, outside Soi 7 & 9 there are larger clubs with better bands but an entrance fee of 200 baht including a drink. Also, the beverage is more expensive.

In the old city, the clubs have an international crowd where you can get Thai freelancers for 1.000 – 1.500 baht all night.

You can take advantage of happy hours that can greatly reduce the cost of the drinks and offer a bundle pack of drinks

4. Chiang Mai Freelancers Prices

Freelancers are cheaper than picking girls from the go go and beer bars.

Chaing Mai has a wide selection of massage shops that might offer extras, erotic massage SPA and soapy parlors.

Most “happy” ending massage shops are located in Loi Kroh Road but the girls are average looking but offer lower prices:

Due to their conservative nature, once they think that you are boyfriend material, beware. They may ask you to visit their parents, and then their expectations are to get married.
