Kung Fu (1972/1993) | Kung Fu (2021)
So I just watched the new series, Kung Fu, which is based on the original series of the same name and decided to do a comparison.
*spoilers ahead*
Kung Fu (2021)
The story follows Nicky Shen (Olivia Liang), a law student dropout who wished to carve her own path and find her place in the world leading her to the Shaolin Monastery where she became a martial arts student with her master, Pei-Ling Zhang (Vanessa Kai) for three years before it was attacked by “ninjas” lead by Zhilan (Yvonne Chapman) who is later discovered to be the sister of the master. Zhilan wants the ancient sword (The Sword of Liang Daiyu) which was wielded by female warriors in the past and she hopes to unlock it’s powers.
After the burning and destruction of the monastery, Nicky finds herself returning home to the United States where things are not the same as she last remembered as her brother and mother are upset and furious with her for abandoning them for three years to go on her spiritual journey to China. While her father and sister are more than happy to have her back and be a big happy family once again. But things are not what it seems when she discovered that her parents are involved with the local triads due to money issues.
One thing lead to another and she finds herself not only protecting her own family from the gangs and saving them but saving others outside of her family too who are in need of saving but had no one else to turn to for help but her. But she began to question herself if this is what she is meant to do with her life while trying to overcame her own fears of the past of losing her master and the fear of the unknown future where she has to stop Zhilan from obtaining the sword.
Kung Fu : The Legend Continues (1993)
The story takes place after the prequel, Kung Fu (1972) which follows Kwai Chang Caine (David Carradine). In the prequel, it shows Caine, an orphan son of an American man and a Chinese woman in mid-19th Century China, where he became a Shaolin warrior monk. When his master, Po, is killed by the Emperor’s nephew, an enraged Caine retaliates by killing him after which he had to flee China to the United States.
In Kung Fu : The Legend Continues (1993), Caine is now a head of a Shaolin Temple in the United States where his son is also a Shaolin student. But an intense rivalry with a fellow Shaolin warrior monk whose philosophy of war clashes with Caine’s peaceful ways, caused Caine to banish him and his followers from the temple as his beliefs goes against Caine’s master’s teachings.
However, the insulted monk and his followers return one night as “ninjas” to attack Caine and burn the temple to the ground. After the destruction of the temple where he believed his son to be dead, he embarked on a monk pilgrimage across the states in search of peace. But things changed when he passed through Chinatown and helped the locals from the triad gangs. Along the way, he reunited with his son, Peter (Chris Potter) who is now a Detective and together they try to help the locals from the triads, which is later revealed to be run by Caine’s arch enemy, Tan (Ernest Abuba), the rival monk that burnt down the temple.
My Thoughts
Both the original and the new series are amazing and interesting in different ways, as both have something that the other does not or does not have something that the other does.
For example, I feel that the life philosophies, discussions and life lessons of the original to be more compelling and the soundtrack is much more memorable as the new one feels a bit generic. I was hoping the new one would have a song something like Netflix’s Marco Polo. But the fight scenes of the new series is much better and the struggles of the main character is more relatable as she’s like everyone of us, struggling to find her place in the world, questioning her purpose, asking what she wants in life and finding inner peace.
There’s one thing which I think is a wasted opportunity not to focus on Wing Chun, which is not only used by the famous Bruce Lee and Ip Man but the pioneers and founders who happened to be women, first by Ng Mui, a nun who survived the destruction of the Shaolin Temple that passed on her teachings to Yim Wing Chun who wants to fight the brute fighters of her town to avenge her father who was beaten up by them.
The thing about Wing Chun is that the way of fighting is more graceful and feminine, considering that the founder was a woman, but nevertheless, effective and deadly, especially against brute strengths, which make the martial arts unique and beautiful, that it’s hard for the male martial artists to master it, with the exception of Ip Man and Bruce Lee, which what makes them great.
Instead of using the character, Liang Daiyu, which I am not sure of whether is based on a real life character or a character that actually exist in Chinese myths or purely fictional character, which I am curious about and intend to find out.
Anyway, you can read more about my findings on Wing Chun in my early post which includes a TED Talk video by a real life female Wing Chun martial artist of today, named Yvette Kong Man Yi. From the video, you could see that she’s very humble, polite, graceful but at the same time, has that look where she could beat you up in a heart beat.
But nonetheless, as an Asian and a martial arts fan, I think it’s definitely awesome seeing more martial arts films making a comeback!

Hi....If you don't mind me asking, who are your favorite MXTX characters (top 5 from each novel)? And why? I'm sorry if you've answered this question before.
It’s absolutely no problem at all!! I don’t think I’ve been asked this before, but hey, I also have zero object permanence, so it keeps things fresh and new. And it’s interesting to see how my answers change over time! Lemme see, I think I’m going to go in reverse order, because I feel like then I’ll be doing the worst agonizing up front.
TGCF
Fifth favorite: YIN. YU. I know that he’s a minor character and him even making it onto the list is pretty solid performance, but I do feel guilty that he isn’t higher than this. He came out of nowhere in my first reading and punched me in the stomach with emotions. I find his sections so hard to read, and I was DEVASTATED when he died and BEYOND stoked to find out he was still alive in the extras. His story hurts so much! I am weak against characters who have relatively modest goals and still see them snatched away (see also: my next entry) and have to struggle on. I wish wish wish I had a way to see more of how he made his peace with things after being thrown out of heaven, and the nature of the (distant) relationship with Hua Cheng and what happens with Quan Yizhen now that he died in his arms, and still came back anyways, my god!
.
Fourth favorite: He Xuannnnnn. I have a hard time articulating particulars, but. I love him a lot. I love a character with a grudge, with a deep, painful grudge, where the grudge is hurting him almost as much as it’s hurting the people around him, and setting the grudge aside would also hurt, and then what has any of this been for-- I've used this metaphor for other characters, but I don’t care if I’m overusing it, because I love it. He feels like a character caught in a thorn bush, where simply being there... hurts, but trying to escape or move in any ways is going to hurt worse, and there’s no path forward that doesn’t involve pain. And like... I don’t love the way he hurt Shi Qingxuan (who didn’t quite make this list adfasgdafsd I’M SORRY) but I wouldn’t have liked to see him swallow back down all that pain and set aside everything that happened to his family and fiancee either! I’m always, always soft for characters who have no good path forward and who grit their teeth and set out anyways.
.
Third favorite: MU QING!!!!!!!!!! I have done... extensive screaming about him. And I love him veryvery much. I can already tell that this list is going to have a lot of mean boys on it, and like... no regrets. Especially since this is one of my FAVORITE flavors, an unapologetic mean boy who is rarely (but sometimes!) soft for the people around him, and who regularly tries to do decently by people, but who consistently gets shat upon and misunderstood and accused of acting in bad faith. I screamed when he and Xie Lian finally got to talk their friendship out in the book. I also screamed when I realized how immediately after Xie Lian’s return he started looking out for him again, and how sincerely, despite his horrible attitude about it. I still want to write more fic for him so badly. I love him so much.
.
Second favorite: Xie Lian! What a good boy! The best boy! He’s so sweet and gentle, but also the best fightboy this world has ever seen, and also so gently snarky with the people he loves! I just... really love me some traumatized characters who have trouble recognizing that they can be Loved, and I’m not going to write this whole essay right now, but I think in some ways, he’s the most... passive about his romance, out of all the leads? Shen Qingqiu is aggressively oblivious, but Xie Lian kind of gently shrugs off the idea that he might be Hua Cheng’s special someone, until he finally gets hit with the cluestick. I generally shy away from the idea of a character “earning” love, but he’s maybe the mxtx character who moves me most with ‘you deserve to be loved’
.
Most favorite: Hua Cheng. HUA CHENG. Oh my god, gotta love this boy. Gotta love this devotion. I love a mean boy who is soft for one person, and he EMBODIES it. I mean, I love Shen Jiu, but he barely manages to do the soft thing at all, while Hua Cheng is over here like ‘if I could only be the stone beneath your feet--’ It’s hard to talk about him separately from Xie Lian, because they’re a unit in my head more than just about any other characters on this list are. I don’t want to get this list to get out of control, so I’m not going to scream for too long, but... I could just watch him go forever. I want to write him forever, and that’s a huge aspect of what draws me to some characters.
MDZS
Oh god, I think I lied, I think this book is going to be hardest. Making these choices is AGONIZING.
Fifth favorite: .....Lan Wangji. Oh god, I feel bad about how low he is. But this story is just packed SO full of wonderful characters, and I’m already consumed with guilt over all the characters who aren’t going to make it. I don’t love them less! But my love for characters in this particular story is very evenly distributed. And I think that Wang Yibo’s acting is possibly scoring points with me that the book might not have earned all by itself. Microexpressions and subtle body language add SO MUCH to a character with such flat affect, and I would be drawn to such a closed-off character anyways, but it really helps. And I love, like... the combined subtlety and intensity of his relationships. It’s not that subtle once you know what to look for, and the brother/sworn brother network makes for varying degrees of how much other characters understand of the things he chooses not to explicitly express, and it gives a really interesting character to the way he interacts with the people around him. Also, love me a man with intense separation anxiety.
.
Fourth favorite: Jiang Yanli? I think it has to be Jiang Yanli, but these rankings are hard. So. I just talked about how much I enjoy the flat affect and closed off nature of Lan Wangji? Well, guess what, I also love it when m’girl is just very GENUINELY AND OPENLY an absolute sweetheart of a person, and I love the contrast between her genuinely kind nature and the uncomfortable pressure that her family’s dynamics put on her to start parenting at a very young age. It’s not necessarily a happy situation, but she adores her brothers so much and they adore her so much! And it’s... a very understated element of the story, but after her parents died, her baby brothers went off to war, and one wreaked havoc as a straightforward commander and one of them disappeared for months and returned as a creepy-ass zombie puppeteer. And she STILL dotes on them like before, despite knowing what they’re capable of. Like, yes, Wei Wuxian just raised an army of corpses and forced a man to eat himself, but I shall still boop him on the nose and feed him Soup. How can I not adore energy like that?
.
Third favorite: Wei Wuxian, I think. I do adore him a lot. He gives me some of the same vibes that make me ache most with Xie Lian, where he is trying his best, and is struggling to hold on in the face of lots of suffering, and I find it really interesting that when the suffering peaked, Xie Lian was forced go on because he couldn’t die, while Wei Wuxian... expired. That line about ‘he thought that no matter how large the world was, there was still no place for him’ always sticks with me, and hurts me deeply. Xie Lian had most of his personal attachments stripped away, and was left to wander on his own, while Wei Wuxian still had a number of strong connections left, but abruptly exited life. And that informs their respective trauma so interestingly! The way Wei Wuxian bounces between high energy chaos and drained exhaustion is really fascinating to me, and was the thread that held me attached to the book through a very confusing beginning. And I’m still very drawn to how intensely he loves, whether it’s Xiao Zhan’s fantastic acting, or it’s him busting out with how much he wants Lan Wangji in the middle of the Guanyin Temple scene. He’s a fantastic character, honestly, I don’t think such a convoluted book would have held together very well without a protagonist this strong.
.
Second favorite: Xue Yang :X Look, he’s a good boy and I love him. Who among us hasn’t done a few mass murders that we are completely unrepentant about, but that we would really like to keep hidden from our current boyfriend, actually? Anyways, as always, love me an angry boy who makes terrible decisions for understandable reasons. And I do love a character who is consumed by agonized ragrets (see my next entry), but I DO also love me a character who has no regrets at all and doesn’t even have much interest in trying to justify himself to anyone else around him. Just look at that confidence! Look at him go!!
.
Most favorite: Jiang... Cheng....... I knew he and Xue Yang were going to be at the top, but those were the only parts of this list that were easy. I mean. Love a self-sabotaging angryboy who is also super super sad and keeps hurting himself in his own confusion. And while I love the romantic thread in all of the mxtx books, the agonized family thread in mdzs is one of my favorite parts, and something that I don’t really see echoed in any of the other stories. I need ten million jc+wwx reconciliations, at LEAST. He’s so sad! And so angry! And I want to see him becoming less of that thing, and for Jin Ling and Wei Wuxian to demonstrate very firmly how much they love him, because they do. I am invested in his happiness in a way that goes far and beyond any of the other non-main characters, haha
SVSSS
Fifth favorite: Tianlang-jun. I think? Oh god, but moshang. THIS IS REALLY HARD, I HATE THIS ;-; But especially since writing my fic, Tianlang-jun has really won me over. And like, he already hurt me good in the novel, just thinking about how he was an innocent young guy, just! Trying to have a girlfriend! And instead got trapped in sensory deprivation, body-rotting-hell for twenty years, when he didn’t do anything wrong!!! He suffered, so much! And I live for his intensely strained relationship with Luo Binghe, because it’s! Perfectly understandable and painful, from both of their perspectives! And he wants to hate humans so badly, but in the end, when he’s told that Su Xiyan never betrayed him, he starts helplessly asking the people around him, ‘really? is it really true?’ and then in the end he loses the only family member he has left who cares about him, and it’s just! Everything is terrible! I have a su xiyan au brewing in my head because I can’t stand it! Someone just give this man a loving partner!!!
.
Fourth favorite: Shen Qingqiu. But... moshang??? Goddammit. Anyways, this dumbass. I find him so endearing, in his dumbassery. I sometimes get a bit frustrated with Wei Wuxian for being oblivious, and Shen Qingqiu is just asking for me to react the same way, but I... don’t, for the most part? Because he thinks he has good information, and he’s slow to react to a changing playing field, and I still haven’t read another transmigration novel that strikes the same balance of hypercompetence and intense incompetence :ppp It’s a funny book, and he’s a funny character! And I really vibe with him, in most parts of the story, which covers a pretty darn wide emotional spectrum. Plus, the running internal commentary is choice.
.
Third favorite: Liu Qingge. Look, I’m a woman of simple needs, and sometimes I just need a high-quality fightboy who clearly cares deeply and is absolute garbage at expressing his emotions. I can’t articulate it much better than that. I absolutely howl at the succubus extra, when Shen Qingqiu is talking to Madam Meiyin about his future partner, and Liu Qingge is like ‘oh my god, sHE IS CLEARLY DESCRIBING ME’ and Shen Qingqiu is like ‘haha, liu-shidi, i thought you thought this was stuupidddddddd’. They’re both so dumb. I love them so much. But stupidity plus war god fighting energy has a narrow lead over stupidity and internal commentary track.
.
Second favorite: SHEN JIU. GOD. I’m still arguing with myself over whether he should go first, but Luo Binghe hurts me consistently through the whole entire story, so I think he wins. Shen Jiu just stabs me in the heart at strategic moments. This is it. My ideal mean boy who is soft for one (1) person, and who BOTH does unconscionable things for terrible reasons (someone just. give him a pile of girls to teach, it will be much more pleasant for everyone involved), and who ALSO gets blamed for things he didn’t do even when he tries to act in good faith. It is the best of all painful worlds. And even at the end, when he has a powerful person who wants desperately to protect him, he still tries his hardest to shove that person away, to keep him safe. I’ve got like four aus where he gets to live. I’m so invested in this character, I love him so much.
.
Most favorite: Luo Binghe. He was.... made for me............ Like, the overwhelming amounts of childhood angst were baked in by Shang Qinghua, but the in-story pain and suffering is PRECISELY my jam. I love a character with separation anxiety! I love a character with massive anxieties over being unwanted! Over nobody ever, EVER just choosing him! I love a character struggling with the idea that the person he loves most in the world thinks that he’s intrinsically Disgusting! I love the kind of stubborn determination that leads him to preserve a corpse for five years, desperately hoping for a way to revive it, constantly cooking fresh food, in case, in case he someday wakes up. The way Hua Cheng loves is overpowering, but he’s had time to like... learn to be mellow when he needs to be. Luo Binghe doesn’t have a chill bone in his body, and if he’s acting chill, it’s probably because he’s done some mental math and decided that being more clingy right now will probably get him pushed away harder. I love the combination of manipulative tendencies and a very, very genuine fear of rejection and being unwanted. There is nothing I don’t love about Luo Binghe, including his worst decisions. I love him so so much.

Live Watch: Guardian Episode One, Part One
It's Guardian! The show that got me interested in this genre! I love spooky things and I love mysteries and fantasy! I simply adore it so much! When I can't sleep I just put on a playlist of Guardian in the background. I was aware of censorship before - every country has some version of it, but to some degree this was my first deep dive into how it might effect a piece of media. Guardian is exceptionally acted and incredibly written, as well as suffering from obvious dubs where the dubbing voice actor sounds nothing like the previous actor and odd cuts that are disrupted. In some ways it's the little drama that could fighting its way past their studio going bankrupt while they were filming, reshoots, and being taken down and altered several times.
In some ways Guardian's struggle fits the spirit and aesthetic of the show. Worn in like an old pair of jeans but still making an effort. Putting emphasis where things count and hoping the kindness of the universe will make allowances for the rest. Attention to detail where the story really matters. It has the charm of a community production put on out of love with actors and crew who would not be anywhere else in the world for any amount of money. That feeling of love comes through, and whether or not I'm barely literate I have so many words to share.
Part of why I love it as well is it has that feeling of 80s and 90s fantasy, like Moomin, Xena or Condor Heroes. Everything feels lived in, nothing's been spit shined except for Shen Wei's suits. It's an old city street of a show, it has history and character built in.
*After all that I don't know that I have a tonne to say about the intro. It's very good but it's also full of spoilers. I think having the intro song be in English does make a difference in making it appealing to English speaking audiences as well as standing out as different and interesting, which the show is. Speaking of Spoilers! Spoilers below!
* The obligatory beginning narration is beautifully animated, I have another post that will be done some time before the heat-death of the universe talking about the fascinating world building options. Unlike some Make It SciFi plots, this one has legs and implications.
* Remakes rarely are able to meet the original on equal ground - and I struggle to believe the actors would Fit as well - but part of me really wants to have a chance to have the Dixingren worldbuilding really leaned into. The writing is good enough we get implication but no real follow through. I want fifty episodes of how Dixing functions, give me more pseudo-science behind the mutations, what are the biological differences. I'm hungry for more!
* I love the cameos of later characters, and the way there was some effort to be discrete with spoilers.
* It's Ya Boy! I love Shen Wei. With that music cue and that sinister turn around they really set him up as dubious. I wish they went with something a little different with the intro so his character wasn't spoiled. The writing, directing, and acting was so good and spoiling who Shen Wei is kind of took the teeth out of that.
* Also cheers to the costume designer who outfitted Zhu Yilong so well and made him look jacked with the fit of those clothes.
* Also you can tell this is a real university because the staff has to sit in tiny student chairs. I'm not joking, please be warned if you're going into academia. Unless you have tenure life is An Adventure - and even then.
* Also shout out to Shen Wei's Prized Cabbage and the Queen of our hearts, Li Qian. Why is this actress not in more things? She has such an expressive and lovely face and she really goes all the way in with her acting. I respect an artist that acts from their chest. Also that windbreaker, white skirt combo is chic and fun all at once, it draws the eye and makes her melt into the background all at once - perfect for the character. I love her so much.
* Here's another one of Shen Wei's coats, it's a lovely color for him but it also is so thin that it looks like it crinkled up just from being worn.
* I'm being distracted by details and missing plot stuff.
* Story of my life.
* I love Li Qian hovering along behind Shen Wei like a duckling following their mother. A) Mood and B) it quietly informs their dynamic. Shen Wei has like one person he can trust but no one he can really confide in and it's the same for Li Qian. A ship will find a port in a storm and Shen Wei has Big Da-ge Energy. My fanfic heart hopes they found comfort in the pseudo familial relationship with each other while it lasted.
* Even in episode one we receive foreshadowing, we love and respect some excellent writing. For those of you who missed it - Professor Ouyang is talking about Lin Jing who I love partially because he's so outrageous large but has the total opposite of intimidating energy.
* What did they feed you Lin Jing? He is so tall and wide, but they do a lot with camera work to try to make him not quite as big. Side note, I would really love to see the actor who plays Lin Jing (Liu Minting) both in more dramas but more specifically in a role where he was like a minister or scholar - someone intellectual. I think the combination of being such a big gentleman and also someone who like plots or plans would be really dynamic if it was written well.
* Also I like the exchange where without a word Professor Ouyang indicates he has one last thing to say, it's private and that he would like Shen Wei to ask Li Qian to leave. That's What You Can Do With Good Actors!
* Li Qian is just so pretty and the actress emotes so well!
* Shen Wei totally understanding what's going on with this shady research immediately and wanting to stay as far away as possible. We see one of the first examples of him being aggressively polite to remove himself from a situation.
* "i'M jUST aN oRDINARY sCHOLAR." No one buys it Shen Wei.
* Angy Thinking Face
* One thing the show is really good at is using establishing shots really well so you always know where everything is and everything is going
* Guo Changcheng, all around good boy and angel. We stan a nervous legend
* Zhou Yunlan Arriving. Why is everyone on this show an Absolute Legend
* Guo Changcheng protecting himself with his certificate is too cute. This young man is trying his best and I support him.
* Also that coat is Young, Pure, Stylish; I love it
* Zhao Yunlan, what's wrong with you? You are amazing!
* His irreverent style and disregard of usual policy makes him fit in really well with his band of misfits and special cases
* Guo Changcheng's OO face is too good, elastic face
* Da Qing my love!
* Jin Ling, I think he has an all seeing eye on his hoodie thing. Illuminati Confirmed.
* Also they filmed the shots so well, so you always know where everyone is in relation to everyone else
* Our Prized Cabbage! I love her!
* Great handheld work: shaky and unhinged, but not migraine inducing
* Foreshadowing in the form of a shadow and reaching for the necklace
* Da Qing's cat behaviours. I really want behind the scenes of the actor discussing how cat was he going to cat
* We get our first real example of how Zhao Yunlan doesn't feel safe emoting negatively and so he uses a super sunny mask to hide his feelings, except with Da Qing who he lets his anger show with because he trusts him.
* I'm not even halfway through and I've written so much, peace and blessings to the readers of this.
* Zhao Yunlan's swagger, after his childhood having a little power must feel comforting and good
* I love how Da Qing is talking as a cat less than a meter from the medical examiner. Does the examiner not care or does he know? Is he deaf?
* Harassing Guo Changcheng is the new team sport
* Zhao Yunlan Realises Something Music
* Also, Lollipop Measurement
* It's nice to see Zhao Yunlan just being himself with Da Qing, he's able to really be honest and genuine with him
* Slow Look Moment
* This moment is so fascinating! Shen Wei doesn't know what's going on yet. He just sees an old friend who winces when he sees him and disappears. We mostly see things from Zhao Yunlan's point of view, but from Shen Wei's perspective this is a first part of just some Odd and Confusing Happenings
* This cat though! I love him!
* The delicate way they’re both feeling each other out. This must be so confusing and startling for Shen Wei and Zhao Yunlan is trying to figure out if this teacher is going to bust him or what.
* He forgot to let go, way to set off Zhao Yunlan’s suspicions
* “Mark Stewart” Is he though? Who picked out that English name?
* Li Qian! I love her and I love that striped blouse. Fashion. Got to look good when you’re resisting a mental break. *Also she hears a meow and looks around at eye level, I love that for her.
* Zhao Yunlan! You can’t take pictures of young ladies without their permission. What is wrong with you!
* I love Da Qing’s very cat attitude of I Will Have Vengeance for These Wrongs
* Two for one! Shen Wei meets two faces from his past.
* Also, I get a little frustrated about people making a big deal about the 10,000 years versus 1,000 years age thing with Da Qing. a) He has amnesia and b) the thousand years refers to the amount of time needed to cultivate to a certain stage in Chinese mythology - usually by absorbing energy from the sun, moon, or depending on the animal other sources.
* I feel so bad for Shen Wei, who knows what he thinks. Were his friends brainwashed? Did they forget? Can they not say for some reason? What is happening?
This review is getting a little long, so join in tomorrow for Part Two~~!

Word Of Honor - 1st watch insta thoughts - Episode 5
Episode 1
Episode 2
Episode 3
Episode 4
FYI (If you haven't read the previous summaries): Smirky Xing = Wen Ke Xing, Baby Xu = Zhou Xu/alcoholic tanned tragic hero lord guy, pleated skirt soldier boss guy = shen something, 5th brother from 5 Lakes
But let’s get started with Episode 5:
Okay, pleated skirt soldier boss guy chases the grandparents away and then wants to take the two mini wangjis with him. But the tree undies master guy isn't having any of it. So pleated skirt soldier boss guy isn't on anybody’s side. I see.
And there is another mention of 5 lakes abusing their power. Ominous.
The kids even wanna stay with tree guy. Must be bad.
Oooooh, pleated skirt soldier boss guy is indeed after the glazed armor.
Oh, uncle Zhao and his peeps and everybody come to the rescue.
And uncle Zhao respects tree guy's wish to keep the wangjis. Is he genuinely a nice guy or just worried about everybody around, including Baby Xu and Smirky Xing and the kid?
Ooooh, super pretty scenery. Why can't we all live in places like that?
Wheee, they get to feast with the family. And Smirky Xing is reciting poetry again. Everybody likes him it seems.
LOL, Smirky Xing is trying to feed Baby Xu. Who must get headaches from all the eye rolling.
Yo, what's up with tree undies master guy, why is he coughing?
Wait, are the little Wangjis also the kids of some 5 lakes brother? (Sorry, random thoughts about how things piece together, and lots of confusion)
Somebody's shouting for help. What's happening?
Young leader of something something, it was gone too fast. He'll be called magenta leader guy, if he ends up important. Ah, wait, he's from Broken Sword Manor. Have we been there before? I forgot.
Oh and he's chased by a ghost. And there's the smiley potato things flying in again. So the red masked ghost gang?
Oh, okay both magenta leader of broken sword manor guy and tree undies master guy vanish in the fog.
Pleated skirt soldier boss guy acts like an ass around the kid, encouraging him to drink along while drunk himself. What a jerk.
Uncle Zhao saves him and sends both to bed - individually i mean, obviously - , and seems genuinely nice, but I don't trust him still.
Whoa, pleated skirt soldier boss jerk guy is awake and just pretended! Even more of a jerk. What is he up to?
Oh, Baby Xu spots him and follows. Thank goodness, somebody needs to keep an eye on the mean guys.
There's some masked dark figure fighting with pleated skirt soldier boss jerk guy.
Something is going on at the main gate, and everybody runs there. Except maybe Smirky Xing, he's just cautious in general.
Oh no, somebody hung tree undies master guy outside the main gate. And it's raining smiley potatoes. Baby Xu is watching and they're all suspecting some happy ghost, because there's a batman-joker smile carved into the dead guys' faces. And happy ghost is apparently one of the masked ghost gang, which makes sense, because of the potato smiley paper crafts.
Oh, now they're worried about the kid. Was it a trap?
No, he's with Smirky Xing and Baby Xu. How did Baby Xu get back there so fast?
Okay, Smirky Xing says some masked ghost guys were going after the kid but were bad fighters and he instantly chased them away. But can that be trusted? If he himself is nuts guy, they wouldn't fight him, would they? But then again... if he were one of them, why would he spare the kid? None of this makes sense.
Okay, magenta leader guy isn't dead yet. He's in some bed, and somebody is lying in bed with him. Some woman. Who is she? Oh, she says she's a ghost. Wait, does he know her? So has she REALLY died, like a dead ghost, not one of those living ghosts?
Dude, stop begging, if she IS a ghost, she's not gonna let you go, you fool.
Oh, ghost girl channels her inner Arya Stark and drops her face for effect.
And magenta leader guy faints like a good damsel in distress.
Wait, she has a face again, but a different one (I think, not entirely sure) and she's one of the ten devils of ghost valley. A beauty ghost. Yeah, she's really pretty alright. And she's got a ton of friends with her.
Okay, what are they going to do with the unconscious guy? Kill him? They're just sharing make-up tips so far.
Baby Xu is trying to say goodbye to the kid. Aww, but the kid is gonna miss his dads. :(
There's a flashback to some kid crying. There was also a name but I have no idea who he is. Was it Baby Xu?
Baby Xu sees a rooftop and flies up, I have no idea why. Was there something suspcious about the building? Huh?
Oh, somebody's pissed because their glazed armor got stolen. Ah it's pleated skirt soldier boss jerk guy and uncle Zhao who's not pissed just sad. Ohhh, so the ghost guys just wanted to steal the glazed armor and anything else was a decoy. I see.
Ahhhh, Baby Xu is on top of the roof, removing the tiles and listening in on their conversation, right when they say no outsider could know anything. Wow, they sure have a foolproof system.
Ok, 5 brothers of 5 lakes kept the 5 pieces of glazed armor? That does make sense.
Wait, why is nobody confused about pleated skirt soldier boss jerk guy being awake and sober all of a sudden????? Had uncle Zhao known that he was only pretending?
Man, that guy is made of pure anger and insults. If he dies at some point, he's probably gonna explode like a pinata hit by a dozen sticks at once, just because all the anger needs to get out first.
Ok, mad respect for uncle Zhao, because he is indeed a good guy it seems. He is capable of feeling guilt, and he doesn't want anything to do with the glazed armor anyway.
Okay, pleated skirt soldier boss jerk guy from now on will be called a-hole guy. Because, if the shoe fits...
BabyXu sees Smirky Xing flying away and is confused as to how he could also eavesdrop without being noticed by Baby Xu. I mean, that was Smirky Xing, wasn't it?
Oh, smirklord flying over the tree tops.
Yeah, Baby Xu, I wanna know too what Smirky Xing is up to.
Aww, "our little cheng ling". Smirky Xing is already feeling their dad status.
Oooooooh, Smirky Xing saved Baby Xu from the spiderweb wire stuff.
Okay, some ghost talk, I have no clue what's going on. lol
I'm focusing on the important details. Like Smirky Xing fishing for info on Baby Xu's virginity.
Wait, who's bleeding from above?
Ah, there's the sleeve cutting. Yes. Nice.
Oh the dead guy in the tree is the son of uncle Zhao? Wait, was he fighting with the dark masked guy? Not a-hole guy? Did I get them confused? I am so unable to understand anything, lol. I hate being faceblind. Somebody please let me know in the comments who did what while the manor was under attack.
Okay, dark masked guy's face is also shown and Bab Xu drops a name. I have no idea who that was, nor do I recognize the face. I'm so bad at this. Help?
WTH is "iron hook"??? Is that some special martial arts technique that only a few people can do?
Now they're speaking in riddles about animals. Owls, cicadas, yellow sparrows, praying mantisses. I have no idea what's happening. But it seems to be some sort of flirting.
Ok, now Smirky Xing says he's afraid of ghosts. I'm not sure if I believe that. He’s kinda looking a lot like nuts guy, after all, who is part of the ghost gang himself.
Oh, sure. When you're afraid of ghosts and more people dying... just go into the coffin house, because that makes so much sense.
Ooooh, Baby Xu saved Smirky Xing from the spider web stuff this time. Niiiiice.
Aww, they're asking each other who they are. So... does that mean Baby Xu is interested after all? Hehe
Smirky Xing answers that he's a good person. Yeah, like that's not the exact thing a bad guy would say. Not suspicious at all.
Why are there paper animals all over the place anyway? Can anybody tell me?
Also, who lit the incense sticks?
Why are they splitting up? That's how you end up dead in a horror movie, wth???
Wait, what? That's Smirky Xing's dad? His dad looks the same age as him? Is he hallucinating?
Whoa, why is it day time? Ohhh, blurred vision. Definitely something shady going on.
Baby Xu is hallucinating people too, I think. Leader of Four Season's Manor. Is that his dad? Zi Shu, wait, was that Baby Xu's real name?
Anyway, dad guy is doing an Anna impression and asking Elsa Xu to build a snowman.
Oh, Baby Xu saw through the hallucination. Got out of it by cutting himself. He really is into pain, isn't he?
Eww, zombie guys. What did I say about horror movies? But, nice make-up!
Oh no, Smirky Xing is still stuck in the visions.
And, more fabric is cut off. Baby Xu really doesn't like blood. Smirky Xing was not wrong.
HOLY SHIT! Smirky Xing called Baby Xu by his real name while hallucinating. So they DO know each other!!! :O
And THAT'S when they end the episode??? NOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!
Gah!!!!!
Okay, okay. I'm calm.
So, what have I learned: 5 lakes alliance can't be trusted. A-hole guy is a complete jerk. AND SMIRKY XING KNEW BABY XU WHEN HE WAS A KID!!! Also, side note, I miss my purple queen :(
Goals for the next episodes: Find out how they know each other!!! Also, why doesn't Baby Xu recognize Smirky Xing? Is he also disguised? I still need to work on the name chart thing, because there's new characters showing up in every episode and I'm so lost.

Guardian Ep 39: WeiLan moments by run time
There be massive spoilers!!! Previous eps can be found in my archive cuz searching by my tags almost useless.
This episode was one-tenths heartache and nine-tenths frustration for me...I guess I can pretty much say that for the entire show. Ugh. I’ll save my rant for the end of the post once again so that it can be skipped if you don’t want to deal with me being a total downer.
from 2:09 - 4:26:
Can I just say yet again this show really did not deserve such stellar actors as these two gentlemen and the heart-wrenching performances they gave??
My heart hurt so damn much for them...just seeing these images again is causing the pain to return
The way ZYL called SW’s name brought tears to my eyes.
And then, how ZYL kept on yelling at Ye Zun to kill him since he obviously didn’t want to live anymore now that SW is “gone...I’m thinking he was probably hoping YZ would swallow him as well so that he could end up in the same place as SW. Omg the pain is back.
But then we moved on in the episode, unfortunately.
Shen Wei only scenes:
[4:27 - 4:40, falls into Ye Zun’s very poorly CGI’d tummy]
[5:16 - 6:00, talking with Tech boy, Ling Jing, in YZ’s tummy]
[19:00 - 20:07, tells Tech boy to stab him deeper when time comes]
[34:22 - 34:34, being protected by Tech boy from YZ’s rumbling tummy]
[36:09 - 37:00, Justicair and Dixing King gets thrown into tummy as well (geeez)]
Zhao Yunlan only scenes:
[4:40 - 5:15, begging YZ to kill him (sadness)]
[6:31 - 8:35, being tortured by YZ to scare the Dragon City peeps]
[11:12 - 15:46, having drinks with YZ (the hell)]
Ok, I just have to interject here...this was such an abrupt mood change that my head was dizzy from it. But I didn’t hate it at all because, Zhu Yilong works well with Bai Yu no matter which role he inhabits, Shen Wei or Ye Zun, so it was still fun watching ZYL interact with YZ even though I technically should be totally hating YZ.
[25:35 - 26:08, go to Dixing bar]
[27:55 - 32:48, confronts Ye Zun at the bar, broadcasts his deception to all of Dixing]
[33:30 - 34:20, YZ combining the Hallows]
[34:35 - 35:21, YZ is hurt due to his hiding a Dixing bullet in the Ghost Lantern]
[37:01 - 39:21, finds out Little Guo is the wick for the lantern]
[39:48 - 42:39, SID arrives, confronts YZ]
Rant ahead:
I wish so very much that I could just turn off my brain while watching this show and just sit back and enjoy the tiny morsels of WeiLan-ness that are thrown our way once in a while, but unfortunately that’s not how I watch things, my brain is a big part of my being able to even enjoy shows/movies/etc, so I am forever tortured by plot issues, inconsistencies, gaffes, etc.
Here’s the thing, I was totally bracing myself for this ep, fully prepared to sob my eyes out considering how the last episode left off, but disappointingly, even though it hurt my heart to watch what was happening in the first five minutes and I actually teared up for a quick second, I ended up mostly just ok overall, which is a real bummer because I think I should be more devastated than that? I mean, everything just happened so quickly that I didn’t even have time to be sad. Feels like neither did Zhao Yunlan. I mean, one minute he’s heart-broken at Shen Wei’s demise and then the next he seems pretty much back to normal. I know he’s still angry at Ye Zun, but I guess I wanted more? And it’s not like I don’t think it’s in character for him to put duty before his own personal interests, but I wish he just had more time to mourn. Another example is Da Qing and his kitty girl: her death was a sorrowful moment, I wanted to feel something cuz I was rooting for them to be together, but then before we had time to really digest the loss it’s like we’re off to some other nonsense. It really makes me sad and frustrated at how the writers are handling this last portion of the show. Things feel rushed and yet at the same time draggy because we’re constantly jumping to so much nonsense. Well, ok, technically not everything’s nonsense in terms of the overarching story, I guess, but I just can’t bring myself to give two shits about all that noise. Hell, I wish we even had more time with Ye Zun because his scenes with ZYL are so fun to watch. In better hands their back-and-forth negotiation could have lasted a whole episode and would’ve been utterly delicious to watch, like two chess players at work. But it was done and over with within like minutes. Makes me hate how much time we spent with lesser, case-of-the-day characters in the past. Like why did they take their sweet time with someone like the merit brush owner and yet Ye Zun’s saga is being rushed out the door. Ugh.
I can’t believe it’s all over by the next episode. I hope they stick the landing somehow. I know I shouldn’t raise my expectations at all since I’m just setting myself up for disappointment. I know folks were really not happy with the ending overall but I’m still holding on to the teeny tiny hope that I won’t be that upset? I don’t mind my heart being broken, but it damn well better be broken in a satisfying, logical and earned way. And honestly, the bar is set sooooo low now for this show that the writers would really have to work hard to not even reach that.
I’m frankly terrified that they will still somehow manage not to meet it.
