Lion and Wolf

timing: At the start of the full moon parties: @letsbenditlikebennett, @laylacooke, @walker-journal summary: Adam meets Layla on the eve of full moon and has to decide if its stabbing time, Celeste saves the day.

Adam was in Took’s General Store purchasing the essentials for “Big Moon” days. Previous trips to The Armory and Excalibur had taken care of most munitions and blade requirements. However there was always miscellaneous stuff. Materials for molotov cocktails, chloroform, poisons, and other essentials were all readily available within Took’s cheery confines.

Plus soap, gonna need ...lots...of soap.

To Adam’s surprise there was a small hesitation inside of him, a passing flicker of hope that none of the wolves he’d encounter were Winn or Lucas inside, or Lucas’ brother whom he’d never met. It was an unusual train of thought for Adam and he shoved it away. All threats needed to be eliminated no matter who they were. This kind of thinking wasn’t what he needed during this critical part of the lunar cycle. Focus.

However the athlete’s mental coaching actually made him lose track of where he was, leading him to almost run over someone in the aisle.

“Hey look where you’re…”

It was about this time that Adam’s eyes took in that the human roadblock also happened to be a bombshell. Brown eyes traced curves before finally arriving to her face with an appreciative smile.

“Sorry about that,” he said in a markedly more diplomatic tone. “My bad.”

Layla had only been in Took’s a few times. When she had managed to find some money here or there and could afford a small snack or something to drink. But being able to freely go in and just look was something she was able to do now. And since finding a home with Ari, Ulf, and Celeste, her mission was to explore the town and familiarize herself with everything without as much worry as she once previously held. Of course, tonight’s only issue was the full moon, which was rather big, and she knew she’d have to head back home soon.

Perusing the aisles, Layla wasn’t looking for anything in particular, however, she also hadn’t been paying attention to where she was going, so when she ran into someone she quickly started apologizing, “I’m sorry, I got caught up in looking, and I didn’t...see you.” The guy staring back at her had caught her attention with his smile.

It had been a long time since anyone had looked at her like that, and while she was flattered, she was also reminded about the serious relationship she had been in for a few years now, “It’s cool. I should have been paying attention to where I was going.”

---------------- “No problem,” Adam said with a lavisciously distracted grin.

Yet with the young woman’s (was she legal...oh god, hopefully?) presence came a feeling of cold that prickled long his skin in ripples of goosebumps and washed down his spin like he’d stepped under a waterfall. Something about this chick’d set off his Hunter senses. She was likely an inhuman, but of what kind he had no idea.

“Adam Walker,” he said, reaching a thewy arm across the card to offer his hand, trying not to let the heeby jeebies change his expression. “You from around here?”

Was this guy flirting with her? He had to have been. That smile that seemed to be permanently etched on his face was alerting her to the fact. She had seen it so many times in high school and when she would go out with Frankie and their friends, but the biggest difference now was that Frankie wasn’t here.

“It’s nice to meet you Adam Walker.” She stuck out her own hand to meet his and shook it gently. “Layla Cooke. And no. I’m actually from the South, but I decided to give White Crest a shot. What about you?”

“Going to college here,” Adam replied, keeping his expression neutral as the touch of her hand brought a rush of inhuman wrongness into his nervous system. The conditioned response of adrenaline entered his veins, years of training and violence filling Adam’s brain with visions of throwing Layla against the mental counters and slamming her skull against the tile floor over and over..

Focus. This is a public place. He knew nothing about her.

“Part of Delta Iota Epsilon,” Adam continued, and shoved a thumb towards the sleeveless t-shirt with the acronym of DIE he was wearing. “Parties all night on Friday and Saturday,” Layla received another appraising look that was devoid of shyness or shame. “You should come check it out...you’d be a great fit,” he assured with a slow nod.

“Yeah, I’m hoping I can go there one day, when I’m able to get my life in order.” She slowly pulled her hand back and let it drop to her side. She couldn’t tell anything different about Adam, just that he seemed to be a huge flirt. It was weird talking to a college guy, considering they were probably about the same age. But after the bite, life just didn’t seem real anymore.

Seeing him motion to his shirt, she smiled, but something about the letters he was pointing to began to make her uneasy. His smile never seemed to falter though, “You know, I wasn’t as big into the party scene as one might think. My parents weren’t too keen on the idea of their only child going out and getting drunk on the weekend.” No, instead they had her training how to hunt and kill werewolves and other creatures of the night. “But I guess one party sometimes couldn’t hurt.”

Looking past Adam, Layla had noticed it was starting to get dark outside, and that meant that the moon would be coming up sooner than she would have liked, “Well, this has been fun, but I think it’s about time I head home, you know, with it getting dark and all.” Layla started to feel faint and sweat slowly began to build on her brow.

Adam’s sinewy shoulders shrugged. “Sounds like a drag...but guess its better than them now caring?” The footballer seemed a little uncertain on that last point. “But hey definately welcome anytime.”

She excuses herself and Adam had far more preparations to complete before the moon was high. “Yeah no prob see you arou….um, Lyra” (it was an L name right?) “you ok?”

“Uh, yeah, I guess.” She was starting to get worried for multiple reasons. “I’ll look you up.”

Layla began moving forward, but stumbled slightly. And there it was. The feeling she dreaded with a passion of a million fiery suns, “Layla. It’s Layla.” Forcing back the lump in her throat, she looked to him with an uneasy smile, “Yeah. Totally. Just need some water.” She began looking around for a cooler with drinks in them. She had to get away from him. Had to get out of the store. Get home.

Adam frowned in concern as L-chick stumbled. Her weak smile only deepened his downturned expression. Adam went down one of the aisles to the coolers in the back. He placed a water bottle by ?Laura? And went up to the cash register to pay.

“Any better,” he inquired upon returning.

----------------

Layla felt like she was going to leave a lung on the floor of the store. Seeing the water, she grabbed the bottle and opened it, chugging it down. She had never changed in front of anyone before. She had always managed to find privacy, but tonight might have been the night, and Adam was the last person she wanted to know or see what she was.

Finishing the water in one long drink, she let the empty bottle fall to the floor, “Thank you. A little, but I really...I’ll see you around, yeah?” Heading for the door, she forced the door open allowing the cool night air to hit her in the face causing some relief to her pale, clammy skin.

After a courteous goodbye Adam gave Layla a minute or so headsteart. He was strapped for time but his instincts were picking up weird vibes here. All kids of weird shit went down around the Full Moon, furry and otherwise. If this chick were a supernatural and acting weird, then that's something he needed to follow up on for security’s sake, at least until he was sure it wasn’t going to be a public incident or Pet Shop of Horrors in some back alley.

Adam’s eyesight wasn’t human, thus he could give Layla a very wide berth while trailing her, keeping it casual and hoping to blend in with the crowd.

With each passing moment, Layla could feel her human side getting weaker and the beast growing stronger. She just wanted to shed her skin and feel better. To have this continual growing ache to disappear, so the animal inside her could be free, but at the same time, she wanted it under control. So far, with every shift, she hadn’t been able to remember what had happened the night before, and it scared her. Hurting someone or something was the last thing she wanted to do, but everytime it happened, Layla seemed to wake up covered in some kind of blood.

Clutching at her side, she could already feel things starting to happen, and the pain had been worse from her little scuff with Francesca and Orion a few days prior. Unable to control it, Layla let out a yowl of pain. With people staring at her, she began running back towards the place that had been discussed with Celeste as a good place to be locked up for this very occasion.

Adam darted into the back allies, mentally visualizing the direction Layla was probably heading. Unimpeded by the crowd, the Hunter place the purchased gear in his backpack and broke into a full sprint, vauling over obstacles, and scale fences in a few alacitious motions. Adam let his mutant physiology take control, hurtling forward over, around, and through the gaps in obstacles as he tried to gain on Layla.

He swung over a chainlink fence and out into the street again. He advanced after Layla with cold purpose, feet pounding on the broken sidewalk. “Heya Layla…,” he piped up, warm amiable tone not matching the hard agates of his eyes. “You ok?...Do you need me to call emergency services?”

Her mind was focused on getting to safety. She just wanted to be left alone, aside from someone to keep watch to make sure she stayed locked up. Layla definitely didn’t want to die, but if she had gotten out, she knew it was a real possibility and one she could support, despite her every effort to convince her parents not to hunt or kill wolves, but to subdue them by safer means.

However, her ears had picked up on something as she was scrambling to get home. The sound of feet hitting the ground at a rapid pace, and it wasn’t long until she knew exactly whose feet it was chasing after her. “Adam?” Her eyes were filled with shock, but also worry, “I don’t know how you got here. Or why.” By now she had a pretty good idea why, “But it’s not safe okay? That’s all I’m saying. So you need to leave.” She hated being blunt, but she couldn’t handle the possibility of attacking him or lashing out unintentionally.

Adam advanced in firmly purposeful steps, his expression steadily losing its warmth until it had cooled into an iron neutrality. Eyes that once regarded her with playful lewdness were now sizing her up with a calculation that held a surgical edge, something to be assessed and possibly disposed of rather than a woman to court.

“Why is it not safe Layla,” he asked with level calm.

Layla’s strength was diminishing. She was going to have to change sooner rather than later, and along with her strength, her patience was growing thin. It was the animal inside that made her want to lash out and rip his head off, but she resisted the urge, knowing deep down inside, she couldn’t live with herself if she ever did hurt someone, “Because, Adam, I’m not feeling too good, and I wouldn’t want you to get sick…” She looked over to him, the softness of her own expression gone and easily turning into something harder.

Adam looked around at the courtyard we were in. Cracked cement and empty storefronts long closed where dotted around them. Small plants and mosses eaked out starved existences in the small fissures spidering through cement and tarmac. The dusk cast waning crepular light over the patch of urban decay that Layla and Adam found themselves. The street’s activity was muted in the distance. “Thanks, that's very considerate of you,” Adam said, still advancing. He lifted a necklace from under his thin shirt. A six-pointed star caught the wan light, pure silver contrasting with the young man’s skin, still ruddy red from the sprint over here.

“You should really let me help walk you home though,” Adam said, winding the sliver symbol through his fingers as he drew closer. “This town can be pretty dangerous at night.”

Layla hadn’t yet been in contact with silver, since the night she received the bite that changed her. Seeing the glint in the rising moon, the girl’s demeanor completely changed and a low guttural growl escaped her lips, “What do you want with me?” Her body ached and the animal raged inside of her begging to escape, but the moon still hung too low in the night sky. Her breathing was rapid, and she could feel the sickness in her growing, “Are you gonna kill me? Is that why you won’t just leave me alone?” Tears formed in her eyes. Was tonight the night Layla was going to die at the hands of a hunter not much older than she?

She continued to move forward. Her only goal at this point was trying to make it back to Celeste, unless a fight were to ensue, which there was a very good chance she wouldn’t survive.

Perhaps seeing that subterfuge held no further purpose, Adam reached his free hand behind his back and under his shirt and withdrew one of the two blades he kept there. A cruelly serrated and silvered tactical knife danced easily in the Hunter’s fingers as he readied it.

“Depends,” Adam said coldly, keeping a steady pace but not yet rushing forward. “Where’re you going this Full Moon? If you're going to be out and about then yeah,” the athlete affirmed with a shrug of his shoulders. “You’d be too much of a danger to let live.”

Layla’s entire body was starting to ache, but she knew she was getting closer to where she needed to be. However, it didn’t deter Adam from continuing to follow along or threaten her. Finally at her wits end and her breathing growing shallow, she stopped and confronted him, “I’m trying to get to the place I was told to go so I can lock myself up, you nosey piece of human garbage.” Sweat was pouring down her pale face, and it was taking everything within her not to just give up and let the monster take control of her body.

Adam stopped when Layla did, posture slightly slanted as he kept his weight ready on his back foot. The insult didn’t seem to phase him however her claim provoked a moment of contemplation, brawny arms folded in front of him. However the way the silver tactical knife was nevertheless held in the outermost arm in readiness hinted at the deception within this face of casualness. The muscles within the Hunters arms and shoulders were still taut and knotted in this state of stillness, as if he genuinely expected Layla to drop this obvious charade and lunge at him any second.

“Really now.” Dubiety dripped from the worlds as tawny eyebrows raised in an expression that asked Layla if she ...really...wanted to play this way. There came another shrug. “Cool, let’s go and make sure you’re chained up nice and safe.”

Layla knew hunters. She knew the tricks they played. She was taught how to play games by her parents. And if she had really wanted to snack on his flesh, she would have done it already, but the idea of meat grossed her out, and that idea still lingered behind all the rage and thirst bottled up inside her, “Geeze, yes. Really. Quit acting like a smug, fuckboi hunter and just help me get to the place I’m going. Unless you’re really just looking for a fight, because, yes, you’d probably win. I’m a baby wolf that doesn’t know shit, except animal instinct, which you’re going to experience, if you don’t quit slowing me down. Embrace this moment, you ass. Cherish it, because I’m sure it’s not often you get a willing participant to play your little cat and mouse game that actually just wants to go lock herself up.” She growled at him, before resuming the walk at a quicker pace. She was dispelling more energy, but if it got her away from him and in chains faster then so be it.

Adam let out an exhalation that evinced that confusion was stronger then frustration. “Yup, it definitely is different,” he admitted while keeping pace. “This isn’t cat and mouse so much as if you're lying, I size you down to fit in those dumpsters,” Adam replied with tactless frankness, nodding towards some waste receptacles they passed.

“Kay, so should I hold you up, carry you..” Adam asked in a more amenable tone, not about to throw an angry she-wolf over his shoulder without permission.

Layla rolled her eyes at his comment about the dumpsters, “Let me make it easier on you, Adam. You don’t have to size me to fit into anything. I know I fit in dumpsters for a fact. No shame here, because it’s where I used to get my food. So if you want to murder me, then go ahead.” She had almost regretted saying that. Almost.

The teenager closed her eyes in defeat, before reopening them and training them on the hunter in front of her, “If you think you can get me there faster, then be my guest.” She held out her arms waiting for him to pick her up.

There Hunter shook his head at his quarry and companions second slip into submitting before the knife. “Not that I don’t appreciate an easy kill to move the night along and all,” he began. “But you give up too easy Layla. It doesn’t matter if you’re small or young. Hit the right tendon it doesn’t matter. Fuckin dead is dead.”

On that cheery note, the Hunter put away the silver chain and sheathed his blade. He took the girl into his arms and hefted her weight without visible effort. This done, the athlete took off in a brisk run that steadily accelerated as the mutant fell into a stride that’d have had most fully-human soldiers panting before long.

“So, where is this place?”

He was right. She did give up too easily. Somehow she had made it this long on her own, but why? Why had she still been spared? Layla couldn’t figure it out. The one thing she did know was that she was angry at the world. Her parents. The wolf who had bit her. The people who had turned her away when she was at her lowest…

The only semblance of hope that had started to return was the day Ariana had offered her a hot meal and a bed to sleep in.

Feeling him lift her up, without resisting, she tried to hold herself up so as to not put all of her weight on him, but it didn’t seem to be much of an issue, “It’s deep in the woods, just past the drive-in theater. Adam, why are you helping me? Why not just kill me when you had the chance?”

“Because it's not the killing that’s important,” Adam huffed as he continued in a boot camp pace up various hills, across cul de sacs, vaulting over property fences using his free hand, and ignoring the residents cry of outrage as he just took the next fence at a run without responding to their questions.

“It’s about removing threats to mankind,” he continued between breaths while running off the paved streets onto the more rugged roads that signaled one was drawing nearer to the drive-in-theatre and woods. “If you stay out during the full moon then you’ll lose control and be a threat to everyone.”

Dusk deepend and shadowed lengthened, even with the Hunter’s superhuman stamina nightfall proved an implacable pursuer.

“But if you're inside and chained up then you’re not a threat and I don’t have to kill you,” the Hunter finished with the brutally linear logic that the Code demanded. “Me helping you means less people die.”

Layla latched onto Adam. He was so much stronger than he looked, and she was impressed. And as she watched the town fly by as he ran, she listened to him explain the answer to her question. The fact that he didn’t outright want to kill her, she could respect, and it reminded her of the many arguments she had with her mother and father about that very issue; killing. However, where they differed was that she didn’t want to kill at all. She had just wanted to subdue the beast, despite knowing that there were wolves and other creatures that would kill regardless. And it’s part of the reason she was in the situation she was currently in.

“Well, I can respect that, and I greatly appreciate you giving me a chance. Not all of us want to be killing machines. Some of us just want to be normal human teenagers that go to college and spend time with their girlfriends and paint our nails.” She sighed. “And not have to be locked up every time there’s a full moon.”

She rested her forehead into his shoulder in defeat getting a whiff of his body spray, “Huh, you actually smell really good.” Looking up, she noticed the small structure just up ahead. “There. Celeste should be waiting.”

“You’re welcome,” grunted Adam as he leapt over the makeshift barricade at the far end of the drive-in theatre. Cicadas whined as the Hunter bounded through the open field towards the woods. Tall grasses and thorns tore at his fatigues, staining the light beige with slashes of green and yell as his breakneck pace barreled through dandelions and knots of knee-height weeds. The air was filled with the smell of fields yielding to the seedy pungence of the woods.

“Heh well I can’t really pretend to know what normal is like,” admitted the mutant who as a child needed to be carefully taught how to interact with non-Hunters so he didn’t accidently break his classmates. “Glad your’re more ...Ya-Ya sisterhood stuff then... murder though,” he huffed as they cleared the treeline, branches snapped with like firecrakers under his pounding feet. “And I guess that’s just life ...when you got’ crazy moon virus,” he said with characteristic tactlessness on the matter of being locked up. “It isn’t fair...but that shits the breaks. “Heh, you mention your girlfriend ...then tease me with the smelling good and getting up close in my grill like that,” Adam noted with a hoarse laugh as they entered the home stretch up towards the woodland house, blinking as sweat stung at his eyes. “You're cruel,” he joked. While the relative intimacy of her so up close against him might’ve been more..distracting...under different circumstances, Adam was actually more concerned about Layla shifting in his arms and taking a big ‘ol bite out of his neck.

“Kay here we are, not much time”

Layla continued to stay latched on, but she could feel her body starting to make miniscule changes. Things got a little brighter in the night. Smells were more apparent and distinct. And she started to feel sick again. She had done a good job of suppressing it as Adam raced her towards the safety of a makeshift cage, but it was getting harder now. And she could start to hear the blood pumping through his veins, which left her mouth watering. But, of course, she kept her sudden needs on the DL.

“Crazy moon virus. Best name for it yet.” She felt her arms go around him a little tighter in both a manner of trying to hold on, but for deeper innate reasons. She was praying they would make it there soon, and despite him being kind of an ass, she didn’t want to hurt him. There was something about him that she valued, especially considering he was willing to risk his life to get her to where she desperately needed to be.

“What can I say? I must just be a heartbreaker.” She laughed weakly as they inched closer, and when they had finally made it, she slid off his back, nearly collapsing to the ground. Her eyes searched for Celeste as she tried to make her way to her feet, “Celeste! Please tell me you’re here...Please be here…”

As it got darker, Celeste found her nerves were dancing under her skin. Layla should have been here by now. She’d headed over to their spot early to ensure the chains were set up and ready to go for Layla. After many tests to make sure they’d be safe, she’d waited patiently, her fingers idly drumming over the tranquilizer gun on her hip. Except as the sky got darker, her patience soon wore thin. She was practically pacing a hole into the ground beneath her feet.

When she heard people approaching, she briefly felt relieved until she heard another voice with Layla’s. Her brow furrowed, she wasn’t keen on anyone else knowing about this spot. “Layla,” she called out, running toward Layla and the man carrying her. She looked over him carefully, waiting for him to set her down. “You’re late,” she said simply before asking, “And who is this?” With Ariana not too far off, Celeste felt on edge having someone else here.

If Layla consented, Adam set her down. He leaned back and placed both sinewy arms behind his head. The run here carrying another person had been taxing even by Hunter standards, and the footballer’s shoulders rose and fell in a steady rhythm as he tried to get some breath back.

“Adam,” he said with a flushed grin despite his brown eyes scanning the area, looking for if this lock-up was legit or if his sweaty gullible ass was about to be ambushed at this murder-cabin. “It’s ok, I’m used to hot gingers climbing me like a tree.”

He looked to the sky and then cautiously between both women. “So...where’s this safety room?”

“I know. I got held up.” She shot Adam a look. But as the moon was nearly high in the sky, the young wolf started to feel a more severe shift, and without being able to control it, cried out in pain. It was starting, and if Layla didn’t get chained up soon, then bad things were bound to happen.

Stumbling towards Celeste, Layla’s eyes held agony, “Do it. Whatever you’ve gotta do, do it.” She had done this many times alone, but there was no one around her that she feared she would consume. Of course, that wasn’t to say she hadn’t eaten people before, she just couldn’t remember it, and that always scared her.

Looking between Celeste and Adam, she had hoped they would both be safe and leave when need be. She had also wondered about Ariana, and if she was being locked up as well, but she didn’t want to say anything with fear of Adam trying something.

The idea of bringing a stranger into the space she’d set up was not something Celeste was keen on doing. Gently grabbing on Layla’s arm, she looked at Adam with narrow eyes. “I’m Celeste. If you haven’t noticed, I don’t really have time to give you a tour.” There wasn’t much time for a debate either, so she led Layla over to the abandoned underground room she’d found. It’d taken a little work to get the chains adequately reinforced and Ulfric didn’t love the idea, but it was what Layla wanted. If this Adam followed then he followed. Once Layla was restrained, she could pay more attention to him and determine if he was a threat.

Layla’s pain was apparent as her bones were shifting. She rushed down the stairs of the abandoned building and kept Layla close to her, placing the cuffs of the chains around her wrists as quickly as she possibly could before looking back to see if he had followed.

--------------- Adam would like to say that he was the kind of person that could’ve just accepted that this Celeste chick, though she felt human to his Hunter senses, was some nice wonderful person who definitely wouldn’t just let the almost shifted out to run free and gnaw off citizen’s gnads. Celeste’s concern looked genuine.

But Adam’s life hasn't been the kind that really left much room for faith in anyone. Faith was too dangerous.

Thus, he followed the two women with a feigned expression of mere idle curiosity.

Following Celeste as she grabbed onto Layla’s arm, the young wolf could already feel the crack and tearing of bone and muscle begin. But it wasn’t long before she was on the ground being chained up. It was the first time the girl had ever had chains around her body, and it scared her. But her mind couldn’t process words to speak from the pain that was taking over her form.

Curling up into a fetal position, she wailed out in pain as the horrific transformation continued to take place. It seemed like an eternity, before all was said and done, but when she had fully shifted, she lay on the floor panting, regaining her strength, before she managed to climb onto her two hind legs. She was smaller than most of the wolves, but she stood at least another foot taller than she previously had. Her fur was a warm, reddish-orange, and her eyes glowed brightly.

Sniffing the air, she looked around until she had laid eyes on Celeste and Adam. Food. Lunging came naturally, but she was quickly jerked back and hit the floor moaning slightly, before crawling forward trying to reach out swatting at both the hunters, but restrained from the large, heavy chains.

Celeste watched closely as Layla transformed, making sure the chains held. When she lunged and got jerked back immediately, she allowed herself to relax a little and look back over to the man who’d brought Layla here. “Adam,” she said slowly, “I suppose a thank you is in order. I appreciate you getting her back here safely.”

She scanned him carefully, he was young and looked strong. It seemed likely they had a shared background, but he’d brought her here instead of killing her. “So, I can assure I have things under control here. I went through rigorous testing with the chains and have a little help handy if I need it.” She patted the tranquilizer gun on her hip, “Do you normally pick up shifting werewolves on the full moon?”

--------------- “No problem Ma’am,” Adam said in a distant distracted voice as he looked on the russet monstrosity that Layla had become. The air of inhumanity Layla brought to his Hunter sense came off the Werewolf in choking waves now that she’d shed her human shape. The silver knife tucked secured in the back of his pants under the sweat-soaked shirt seemed to dig painfully into his spine. There was a moment of regret where Adam’s heart faltered in the conviction that was the right choice.

Look at that thing. Why save Layla when it just meant that an innocent would likely pay the price for Adam’s weakness on a future full moon?

Adam pressed the thought from his mind, knowing first hand where that line of reasoning often led.

“Thank you for making sure the creature’s secure,” the Hunter said with an unconscious lapse into depersonalization. “Not usually how I roll,” he admitted, brown eyes drawn again to the luminous gaze of the straining lycanthrope. “But this seems a regular thing for you...Celeste, right?”

The young, wild animal paced back and forth knowing she was limited in her range on the chains, but she was hungry. Saliva dripped from her long fangs as she continued to snarl and growl at the two humans in her presence. And when innate hunger became too overpowering again, she took a harder lunge, only to be yanked back once again; her efforts proving fruitless.

Any indication of Layla was gone. She was just an animal looking to fill her stomach with anything, and they had been her targets. She was young and dumb, still new in her ways as a werewolf. She had many lessons to learn, but right now she was running simply on endorphins and the animal instinct that had come with the curse.

She wasn’t sure why it was so hard for her to believe that maybe another hunter had a more reasonable code than her parents had, but Celeste would be grateful for it. She’d have to find a new spot for the next month though. She didn’t want anyone outside of them knowing where they were. Too much of a risk. “I see,” she said, calmly and slowly, blinking a few times before she finally added, “I think I can figure out the rest, thank you.”

With a more serious face, she assured, “It is, yes. I’ll make sure she’s on time next time. She cut it entirely too close for my liking.” She let out a breath she hadn’t realized she’d been holding. Just another layer to this whole fucked up puzzle of keeping both the kids and others safe. She figured she’d refrain from mentioning the bit about being what her parents would call a deserter. Most didn’t take kindly to that. ---------------

Although this particular encounter had ended happily, Adam’s night had really only begun. By this point those wolves that were still out had already changed, and Adam’s duty shifted from containment to elimination. “Thank you ma’am appreciate it,” the Hunter said, wishing he still had enough faith left to take Celeste’s assurance at face value.

Making a polite excuse to leave, Adam began the long trek back to town to retrieve his supplies and take up the night’s patrol

Plus soap, gonna need ...lots...of soap.

However the athlete’s mental coaching actually made him lose track of where he was, leading him to almost run over someone in the aisle.

“Hey look where you’re…”

It was about this time that Adam’s eyes took in that the human roadblock also happened to be a bombshell. Brown eyes traced curves before finally arriving to her face with an appreciative smile.

“Sorry about that,” he said in a markedly more diplomatic tone. “My bad.”

“No problem,” Adam said with a lavisciously distracted grin.

“Adam Walker,” he said, reaching a thewy arm across the card to offer his hand, trying not to let the heeby jeebies change his expression. “You from around here?”

Focus. This is a public place. He knew nothing about her.

She excuses herself and Adam had far more preparations to complete before the moon was high. “Yeah no prob see you arou….um, Lyra” (it was an L name right?) “you ok?”

“Uh, yeah, I guess.” She was starting to get worried for multiple reasons. “I’ll look you up.”

“Any better,” he inquired upon returning.

Adam’s eyesight wasn’t human, thus he could give Layla a very wide berth while trailing her, keeping it casual and hoping to blend in with the crowd.

“Why is it not safe Layla,” he asked with level calm.

---------------

“Thanks, that's very considerate of you,” Adam said, still advancing. He lifted a necklace from under his thin shirt. A six-pointed star caught the wan light, pure silver contrasting with the young man’s skin, still ruddy red from the sprint over here.

“You should really let me help walk you home though,” Adam said, winding the sliver symbol through his fingers as he drew closer. “This town can be pretty dangerous at night.”

She continued to move forward. Her only goal at this point was trying to make it back to Celeste, unless a fight were to ensue, which there was a very good chance she wouldn’t survive.

“Kay, so should I hold you up, carry you..” Adam asked in a more amenable tone, not about to throw an angry she-wolf over his shoulder without permission.

“So, where is this place?”

The only semblance of hope that had started to return was the day Ariana had offered her a hot meal and a bed to sleep in.

Dusk deepend and shadowed lengthened, even with the Hunter’s superhuman stamina nightfall proved an implacable pursuer.

“Heh, you mention your girlfriend ...then tease me with the smelling good and getting up close in my grill like that,” Adam noted with a hoarse laugh as they entered the home stretch up towards the woodland house, blinking as sweat stung at his eyes. “You're cruel,” he joked. While the relative intimacy of her so up close against him might’ve been more..distracting...under different circumstances, Adam was actually more concerned about Layla shifting in his arms and taking a big ‘ol bite out of his neck.

“Kay here we are, not much time”

A Penny for your Health?

You see it sitting there, on the countertop positioned conveniently next to the change dispenser. You sometimes reach your hand in and take from it because you’re lazy or selfish. Other times, you’ll empty your hand into it simply because it’s harder to open your pack of Marlboro Lights while carrying out your six-pack of Busch Light with change in your hand. I get it. No judgment here. What is this well of human generosity? The penny tray. Seen in all 50 states in nearly every gas station convenience store. The very idea of it is pretty great. Take a penny, leave a penny. Fucking genius. I mean why not drop a few cents in there anyway? It’s like a pay-it-forward savings account. It’s a way to be a good person while putting in the least amount of actual effort, an important quality of our American social contract. Besides, isn’t it better to help out your fellow man than to totally forget you even have that extra change until you either find it under the couch cushion next to a Dorito of questionable age or even months later in the pocket of last winter’s coat? Shit, it’s only a penny unless you’re one of those really rich motherfuckers that leave something bigger than a nickel.

I can’t remember a time that these trays didn’t exist, and I’m older than the SyFy channel and the original NES. As far as I’m concerned, the penny tray is a part of America, like NASCAR and cheating on your taxes. And the funny thing about it is anyone can use it, regardless of race, religion, sexual orientation, place in the economic strata, whatever gender pronoun you are, etc., without so much as an utterance of disdain or unfairness. It’s true. Never once have I seen protest from the skinheads, or the Black Panthers, Westbrook Baptists, the anti-war hippies, the ACLU, not even fucking Scientology. Nobody gives a flying rat’s ass that these things exist. So why the fuck can’t we have this same outlook on other things that might actually be of some use for the nation as a whole? Like, say, healthcare.

Healthcare coverage in the U.S. is pretty fucked up when you think about it. People usually get the best options through their employer, but just like friends with benefits, it starts out great but sooner or later it comes with some strings attached. For one, employers don’t have to offer group rates, or even offer coverage to employees working part-time or doing contract work. Even then if you do get coverage through your employer and you have a pre-existing condition, like diabetes, then the insurance company can tell you to get bent and deny service. Even better, when you do have insurance but they conveniently deny paying for treatment because something is out of network, or not covered by your plan as stated in the fine print that nobody reads. And don’t get me started on dental insurance. The people that usually need it the most, the poor and the elderly on fixed incomes, have trouble affording it and oftentimes rely on cut-rate plans or Medicaid (which has plenty of its own faults). On top of all this, private insurance doesn’t do a damn thing when it comes to controlling costs, because why can’t the medical and pharmaceutical industries rake in a fuck-ton of money from a chemically dependent consumer base that’s getting bent over and prison raped from a lack of options. It’s an awful lot like a strong arm robbery just for the privilege to get treated when you think about it. That’s capitalism’s influence for you. Anything else is unAmerican and downright evil, right?

There has been a lot of debate on what we can do as a nation and body politic that can help millions get healthcare that isn’t frustratingly shitty and increasingly expensive. For starters, some believe we should just leave the shit as it is and not change anything. Let the free markets reign supreme and the weak will die off leaving a healthy race of super citizens. Under this solution, you are free to choose the insurance company you want to pay your ransom to and they handle the rest. The companies dictate how much you pay and how much they pay or if they pay for any service or medication. Have you ever tried to negotiate what you actually get for your money? No? Didn’t think so. This solution is American as fuck so the argument should stop here, but what fun would that be just listening to one option and calling it a day. That’s like watching the same news channel all day.

Another solution is a more socialist approach in which you pass a law that levies a tax on all Americans earning income and then whatever government bureaucracy is in charge of the money pays out benefits to all Americans. The will of the people can then, through representation, effectively bargain for better prices and more expansive coverage because at that point our tax money is the only game in town. See, I know that’s not the American way, that’s the way of the rest of the civilized world’s way and how can the United States be special if we do the same shit the rest of the developed world does? We can't, and that’s why that commie shit isn’t welcome here.

Now I dare ask the question, what’s the fucking difference? Really. What is it? Because as far as I can tell, both possible solutions are the fucking same. You pay money into a big pot, where there are people hired or appointed into positions that control the money and payouts are dispersed on an as needed basis. When you get a bill from a hospital or doctor’s office and you only owe a fraction of the total, where do you think that money comes from? It sure as hell isn’t all the money you paid the company because that would be more like a rainy day savings account. No, other people paid their monthly bill allowing more money to be used for you. Everyone paying money to the insurance company helped you pay that bill. And just like the tray at the gas station, you’re okay with that. Sometimes, the insurance company doesn’t want to pay that much. Maybe it was an unhealthy month and there were a lot of claims, or the board didn’t think you were worth saving. Who knows. Either way, your bill was subsidized by your fellow policyholders. So to everyone that likes to say that they don’t want to pay for someone else’s healthcare “cuz, this is Amurica, and that’s commeynism,”- shut the fuck up because if you have insurance or pay taxes, you already do.

Can someone explain to me how buying healthcare coverage is different than paying a tax for the exact same or possibly even better outcome? Is the fact that you voluntarily pay money to a business for a servi™ce mean that you are freer? I can’t wrap my mind around how just because it's a business doesn’t mean the concept isn't a socialist idea. It just is.

Maybe there is a difference. Perhaps that difference is that a private corporation operates with profit in mind. These entities, especially in this day and age with boards of directors and publicly traded stock have more incentives to make money, meaning higher prices and fewer expenditures. Now, I’ll grant you that the government can be real fucking dumb, but these corporations are profiting on your desire to not be fucking sick while maintaining the right to deny coverage for any reason. Pre-existing condition? Fuck you, you’re a high priced liability. Cancer? We’ll pay some but you’re still getting stuck with a bill you most likely can’t afford. Want to see a healthcare provider that’s out of network? Fuck you too. These insurance companies can be real fucking assholes sometimes. In my opinion, by supporting this system, you give a tacit agreement to this shit continuing. So you’re an asshole too. Sorry. Guilt by association.

I’m not saying government-funded healthcare is perfect. Far from it. Especially with the current government we have. They’ve lost money before and most likely will again. They’ve borrowed from social security. They’ve been openly corrupt. I get it. We shouldn’t really trust these motherfuckers with much, but it could be better than what we have now. The people united and holding those in power accountable through elections and protests. It is, after all, the job of the government to work for the people, for their betterment and safety, to regulate commerce between the states, and to work towards a common goal. All of those things government tax-funded healthcare can provide. Remember finishing the pledge of allegiance with “liberty and justice for all?” Think about the liberty you’d have not having to worry about the cost of being sick and the justice knowing that your fellow American chips in to help his neighbor because it is the morally correct and just thing to do. It still falls short of utopian but at least it's a step in the right direction. Do I think everything should be covered under the people’s insurance? No. I don’t. Sorry, but your penile implant will just have to wait until you can pay cash.

The health of the people shouldn’t be a for-profit industry. It belongs outside the realm of normal capitalist behavior. Healthcare is something that benefits us all. And the healthier the nation is, the more productive, the happier, and better off we can all be. Right now, the healthy are the ones who can afford it. Is that right? Depends on who you ask. Is it just? Not in what should be a united, civilized people. How can us Americans sit by and watch our fellow citizens fall sick, stay sick, and possibly die and not think that the system has failed somehow? It’s morally bankrupt. Also never forget that we as a nation pay more per person on average than many of the other countries with socialized medicine. So even at the very least, socialized medicine can save you a buck or two. And who doesn’t like to save money? It’s certainly less time consuming than clipping fucking coupons.

So just like the little penny tray, a new system of healthcare can be a benefit to everyone, not just those that can afford it already. You put in a little and other times take what you need without questions. It’s there when you need it and can make your day just that much easier. Let’s, as Americans, make the tray just a bit bigger and make things a little better for everyone. You’re already doing it and just didn’t realize it, comrade.

The Best Life Advice for Gay Guys

I’ve been around a long time and I’m so grateful for everything! The younger people have it so much better than we did when I was coming of age. The overall societal acceptance of who we are and who we love is phenomenal!

That being said marriage equality isn’t the here all be all of your well being.

Therefore, I want to give some advice to the next generation to live a happy productive life

1. Get right spiritually!

Many gays and lesbians turn our backs on spirituality because of how we’ve been treated by church folks.

That’s certainly understandable and please note when I say spiritually I don’t necessarily mean church. I don’t go to church and probably won’t go to church ever again.

However, if you have inner wounds they must be attended to. Manifestation is a great program that I’ve used to help change my thought patterns permanently and alter my subconscious to become a better human being.

2. Travel! If you’re still in your 20s then travel a bit!

You’ll learn not only more about the world that you live in but more about yourself as well. The truth is your experiences will have more weight on your psyche than material things.

There’s no reason not to travel. You can get a tour package to South East Asia for like $400. That includes food, drink, transportation, and an English speaking tour guide!

There are even sites like tourradar where you can compare packages from different companies. Hell, there are even contests you can enter to travel for free!

3. Find something you’re good at and focus on that!

I don’t care what it is. If you’re good at making balloon animals then become a clown and focus on that. If you’re good at debating become an attorney. If you’re good at organizing then become a professional organizer.

It doesn’t matter! Find something (that’s singular) and focus on it!

It takes at least 10,000 hours to become really good at something. If you’re an entrepreneur you’ll most likely fall on your ass the first few times.

Don’t give up!

Find a way to support yourself and support yourself well! Your dick or your asshole can’t pay the bills forever.

4. If you’re fat lose weight!

Yeah I said it.

You wanna tissue?

In most things in life there are trade offs. If I get this I’ll lose that but if I don’t do this then I can do that and so forth. There is no advantage to being fat. Period.

Sorry...

It’s unhealthy, you’ll just be a burden on society, you’ll be miserable because a lot of the people you need to network with won’t want to talk to you, and you’re more likely to be single for the rest of your life.

It’s hard but not that hard to lose weight. There are programs like the this one that can make you lose 21 pounds in 21 days.

There’s no excuse to be fat, son.

Fat people earn less money, have fewer friends, have more health problems, and die sooner.

Physical fitness is very necessary for human beings.

5. Get a boyfriend!

Don’t believe the nonsense that we can be happy being single forever. The creator(s) made us to want companionship.

There are numerous studies that clearly demonstrate that being coupled is better than being single. If you want a boyfriend but can’t get one go here.

6. Get Married!

Seriously, we fought so you guys could get married. Don’t waste it!

If you’re older than 32

If You’ve been living if your guy for 1-3 years

If You can stand to be around him,

If You can still fuck him with the lights on

Then just marry him!

You’re not gonna find anyone better and if you keep trying to hold out for guy with a bigger dick you’ll just end up old and alone.

But John, he’s gained a few since we’ve been together…

So fucking what?!

Are you the same weight as where when you got first got together? Even if you are and he’s fatter..so what?! Marry him anyway!

But John he does things that really annoy me sometimes...

So fucking what?!

You probably do things he doesn’t like either. That’s life. Marry him anyway!

There are only 2 reasons not to marry your partner of 3 years or more:

Infidelity

He can’t hold down a job

He has a drug problem (okay its 3)

Married people are happier, live longer, are less likely to have serious health problems, and make more money.

Man up and get married!

Ask yourself this. If something really bad were to happen to you like you got paralyzed or some shit like that can you confidently say that he would he stick around? If you can confidently say yes. Marry him!

If you don’t get married by your mid 30′s what will happen is once you reach about 35 or 38 you’ll notice all the guys you’re attracted to will be much younger than you. The ones that don’t laugh at you will just want to date you for one thing ($$).

7. Adopt children!

The United Nations estimates there are over 100 million orphans in the world!

That’s a lot of orphans and frankly I think its time we gays stepped up to the plate.

I believe in my heart part of the reason our Lord put us gays us here is to take care of the forgotten children and there’s a hell of lot of them that could use a good loving home.

Make a difference and adopt a foster child!

Spending your life clubbing and drinking will just leave you a sad bitter old man if you even make it that far.

In the service to my country I’ve had a total of 5 comrades die under my command. The ones that had kids had peace in their eyes like they knew they were leaving the world in good hands. Right before one died he told me “make sure Haley knows that daddy died keeping her safe” and smiled. The ones that just wasted their lives screwing any bitch that would let them and partying were full of fear and regret.

Sorry son but leaving a pet rock behind isn’t the same as passing on your legacy to another human being.

8. Stay out of debt!

The only things you should go into debt for are:

An education

A house

To start a business

A car

Anything else isn’t necessary. If you have more than 10k go here. Debt will do nothing but bring you down if you don’t keep it under control!

What if I don’t take your advice?

We’ve all seen that old bitter queen at the gay bars. You know who I’m talking about.

That old goat that doesn’t have any friends because he’s a jackass, doesn’t earn much money because he never focused on anything productive when he was younger, and is living on government assistance.

What’s worse is he tries to chase guys 1/3 his age and they either just laugh at him or take what little money he has and leave. He’ll most likely die alone.

That’ll be you if you don’t listen to my advice...

'Sorry, we don't accept cash.' That is likely to be a familiar phrase repeated by staff members and information posters alike for the rest of 2020 as major retailers begin to reopen on mass in mid-June. Whereas at the turn of the last decade, many local, smaller businesses didn't accept cards, this has been flipped on its head in a matter of years, with better card payment devices and networks alongside the rise of 'convenient' contactless, the limit of which is now £45. Even our local ice-cream man is only taking card payment now: you have to go on his website, book a slot, pick your flavour and pay by card, before he jingles his way into your cul-de-sac. Will he accept cash again in the near future? This question can be repeated for all manner of businesses and services big and small – will many choose not to return to handling cash payments once this pandemic is well and truly over? Shops will currently say it's safer and quicker to use card in the pandemic and on the whole, they're right. Firstly, they don't have to handle it - but the jury is out whether it really is a less germ-ridden way to spend. All parts of the economy relied on cash payments, so paying for the security vans that moved the money to banks or topped up ATMs was shared across a massive base of transactions, Ceeney says. Before the crisis, use was already dwindling. In 2017, the volume more than halved to just one in three of all payments overtaken by card. It was forecast to halve again by 2028 to just one in six. This now looks unrealistic depending on how retailers behave post-lockdown and consumers, who have switched to card, and never go back. Experts warn a decline in cash use expected to take place over five years could now happen within five months. MPs have stepped in and written to the Chancellor this week demanding urgent action to save the UK's cash system from collapse. A letter signed by 37 cross-party MPs says: 'Cash is a lifeline for many and an important budgeting tool, particularly for the hundreds of thousands of vulnerable people that depend upon it to go about their daily lives. 'Covid-19 has highlighted the importance of cash, especially for those needing others to food shop on their behalf, whether elderly, vulnerable or self-isolating.' It's worth pointing out that card payments are extremely useful. During the pandemic, it has been handy to pay for items in advance using card to then pick-up or have delivered. But there are a number of reasons why the accelerated death of cash should be a worry. One of the key ones is removal of choice: people should be able to pay by cash or card as they choose. There is no law stopping them. It means the fightback begins with the shopper, from ice-cream fans to fashionistas. We are not a rich country follow ECCB regulatory guidelines so figuring out how to provide relief to all sectors isn’t so easy for us… Some banks are giving sine relief but we don’t all have the income to afford mortgages, this only benefits some… (I’m not hearing from Courts at all eh…) I also agree that our priorities should have been skewed more towards that move to OKEU sooner, but again, we may do so now and experience all the issues of a lack of readiness that we have been warned about. So let’s not shout too loudly about it being done now because of the pandemic. You wouldn’t try to walk on a broken leg, but if a lion was coming for your ass, you’d find a way to run… And yes, we have to finish St. Jude’s (while managing the risks) because we need more hospital beds, services ans staff if the shit hits the fan… And BTW… Thanks Dr. Belmar! I had to shout out to a special group of persons who are working really hard right now and putting themselves at risk for little remuneration… the security guards… They’re working 12-hour shifts while standing though most of it in many establishments…. They are acting as doormen all over the place with no masks in many instances. They sometimes distribute hand sanitizer to incoming customers and handle crowds that are sometimes times irate and showing a lack of patience while lining up outside supermarkets, banks, etc… I wish them well and we should grant them all the cooperation we can right now… their pay is really crappy…

GOING HYBRID - MY 18 MONTH UPDATE

INTRODUCTION Back in late 2015, I ordered a BMW i8 - a plugin hybrid supercar thing with futuristic styling, technology, construction, and different spin on client service. It was a massive departure from my usual choice of car.

Arriving in March 2016, I have now had my i8 for 18 months and 9,000 miles. It’s my only car.

LOW COST SUPERCAR The car is averaging over 50mpg and over 50% of my journeys are completely emissions-free electric. Even longer journeys (see pic) see over 40mpg which may seem average when compared to a regular 2 litre TDi rep mobile, but the BMW i8 is an exotic GT car, complete with carbon-fibre tub, dihedral doors and stying to die for.

It’s been rock solid - there has been no service costs, no warranty claims, no problems, no VED/RFL, and no consumable costs - aside from £60 per month on fuel and about the same on insurance. I’ve traveled into central London without paying the congestion charge - on-street parking and charging in Westminster is free! (for now)

Despite the £111k purchase price, with the BMW deposit contribution, LEV subsidy, and the 100% WDA the net-to-me-cost is around £50k (and it’s probably still worth £65k).

With some prudent tax planning the car has actually cost net zero to run so far.

So, aside from having to fund the upfront purchase, and including the balancing tax charge I will have to settle when I sell, it is by some margin, the lowest cost of ownership of any car I’ve owned in the last 20 years at around 50p per mile.

Compare that with a high of £3 per mile for my Aston Martin, and even my cheapy Porsche Cayman cost £1.20 per mile. Yikes!

Anyhoo, enough history and dull talk about cost savings - it’s been 6 months since my last update - so what’s new?

THE WORLD HAS CHANGED Transportation will change more in the next decade than it has in the past 50 years and the age of the internal combustion engine (ICE) is coming to a close. Much of the world is moving away from a reliance on fossil fuels and towards EV and hybrid vehicles.

The UK government has stated that by 2040 latest there will be no new ICE-only cars on the road. As a lifelong confirmed petrolhead, and recent convert to PHEV, this has raised a lot of eyebrows, questions, debate, and downright argument.

With diesel car engines now shown to be a dead duck in all but a few edge cases, many manufacturers are committing to switch even sooner (Volvo by 2020), we’re likely to see the death of mainstream diesel cars in 5 years and petrol cars in 15.

ELECTRIC CARS FTW? So, electric is in, and the traditional ICE is dead?

Erm, not quite. (PH)EV is still on the early adopters curve (read: for the well off, or mad). The Tesla might have outsold the BMW 7 Series and Mercedes S Class collectively in the US but it’s still a relative rich mans choice.

Over the last 15 years, regulation, policy, and technical development has driven the cheaper-end of motoring towards diesel. As diesel is now mostly dead, and petrol development stunted, the current investment in passenger car powertrains is all about hybrid and pure electric. But, it will take time for these developments to work their way through to the average motorist.

We’re unlikely to see folks trading their 5 year old Ford Fiestas in for Nissan Leafs anytime soon. The cheapest new EVs are now around £15k, yet you can still buy a new petrol car for less than half that. Worse still is the secondhand market, £5k is the cheapest you can find an EV, and that’s more money than many people spend on their car today.

Also, EV doesn’t entirely fill the gap that the death of ICE is going to cause. We’ll need wholesale changes to mass transit, charging availability, how/where we work, and economies of manufacturing scale to see universal adoption. But, it’s coming - and quicker than you might imagine.

I’M LOVING IT I jumped a little early in PHEV, and chose an expensive way to dip my toe in the water. I had a pretty decent budget that could have stretched to all sorts of nice exotica, but elected to buy an innovation flagship from a mainstream manufacturer.

Leaving the ICE world was most definitely a jump into the unknown, but after 18 months I don’t regret one bit. In fact, its the best car choices I have made in the last 15 years, or maybe more.

I’ve never had, or seen a car that attracts quite as much positive attention as the i8. Fic. Warstan (yes, still). Epistolary. Containing massive spoilers for Sherlock S4E1, major character death (more than one), a huge amount of very bad language and ALL THE ANGST.

I’ll get it up on the various fanfiction sites tomorrow probably. But I churned out 2850 words of fic in about four hours of work which is by FAR a record for me and I wanted to capture what I can do when inspired by rage.

The following letters are selected from the archives of material donated to the library as part of the estate of noted author and adventurer Captain John H. Watson, M.D. (hons), Ph.D. (h.c.) The originals are handwritten and undated, thus the ordering has been chosen based upon textual and other cues within the m.s. Itself.

I am writing this under duress. Because that miserable prick Sherlock broke into our flat and said, “John, I take my responsibility as your friend and Rosamund’s godfather seriously, and as such, I must tell you that I am concerned for your wellbeing.”

And after a lot more shit like that including some actual threats I got hauled back to another fucking therapist and got another fucking psych diagnosis (traumatic grief, if you were wondering) and another fucking stupid writing assignment.

So here we go: let’s send a mash note to my dead wife. I’m sure that’ll make me feel much better.

Sherlock took my bloody gun. And our friends stay over in a rota to make sure I don’t off myself, not that I would. I have Rosie to think of. I’m not like you, I wouldn’t ever leave her that way. You selfish bitch.

She keeps fucking crying for you and I don’t know what to do, she’s too little to understand things like “forever” and-

I dreamed about you last night. You had on your purple dress and you were sitting in the restaurant we liked and you explained to me that it was all, obviously, just a trick. I forced myself to wake up.

Because I know, I know that that doesn’t happen. The people who die don’t come back to us. But there’s this little part of my brain that keeps whispering, “Well, if it happened once...”

If it could happen again. Please, please. If I could get one more miracle.

Dear Mary-

I’m trying this again. The life insurance policy we got when Rosie was born finally paid out today… the cheap bastards took forever to investigate it, given the terrible circumstances of your death. And when I opened it up and saw the cheque I immediately thought I should text you to tell you, that you’d be happy that we could pay off the mortgage, put some money away for Rosie to go to university someday.

About three times a day I think of something I’d like to tell you. And every time there’s that “Oh” moment right afterwards. I don’t know when that’s going to stop.

Things are… better, I suppose. I don’t feel like I’m living in a horror movie anymore. I don’t really feel much of anything, honestly. Everything is grey, including this city. I’ve thought about moving, but you’re not supposed to make decisions like that in the first year, and I don’t want to disrupt Rosie’s life any more than it has been already.

She’s getting so big now. She’s started to stretch out and she looks like a toddler, not a baby anymore. She has a bunch of words, and she can say a few little sentences like “want cup” and “Wosie up.” Sometimes she sort of cocks her head and looks at me and when she does that she looks so much like you it’s actually physically painful.

I was jealous of her, though I didn’t really realize it at the time. It’s petty and terrible but I was. I’d just found my way back to you and then she was born and all of a sudden I felt like I was alone on the outside of this little circle of mother and child, and I made a terrible mistake.

Did you know about that? I hope you didn’t. I hope that your last months weren’t tainted with that. It wasn’t as bad as it could have been, but it was enough. And now Rosie’s all I’ve got left of you and I have to live with myself.

Guilt on top of grief’s one hell of a thing. Would you forgive me, if you knew? If I could ask you to your face instead of writing these letters to nobody?

Rosie and I went to Baker Street and spent the afternoon there today. I bet you’d have been happy about that.

It’s not the same, anymore. Detective work is over for me: I’m a single parent now and I can’t afford to take those sorts of risks. And honestly I think Sherlock’s considering hanging up the hat himself. He talked about his cases but none of them really seemed to capture his attention. A lot of the heart went out of him when you died.

But it was good. The bastard has been my best friend for the better part of a decade and you can’t hang on to blame forever. He shouldn’t have provoked the woman with the gun. I should have gotten there first. You shouldn’t have leapt in front of a bloody bullet.

None of us wanted any of this to happen. But here we are.

He doesn’t like to talk about you, but he got misty when he was playing with Rosie… which, speaking of, he literally went out and spent two hundred pounds and bought her a chemistry set. I pointed him to the “Ages 8+” on the box and he said “Well, surely that’s more of a guideline than an actual rule. And there’s no enforcement mechanism in place.” But I played the bad guy and put my foot down because she’s still too young for hydrochloric acid, so she spent the afternoon making snakes out of clay while he and I grew silver crystals on a copper wire.

It was almost like old times, except of course for the missing person at the heart of it.

I keep thinking it’s going to stop hurting, eventually. You know how many people I’ve loved who have died? And I’ve always been able to put it behind me, sooner or later. But it’s been two years now and it still fucking hurts, every day.

I dreamed about you last night. And in this dream we were back in Morocco and you were sitting in my lap and kissing me.

All we did in my dream was kiss, though that night we did more. If I’d known then that it would be the last time together. If I hadn’t been feeling guilty, even then. I’d have paid more attention, made more of an effort… because now I don’t really actually remember it. It’s just a blurred compilation of the thousand other times we were together. Two bodies, seeking comfort in the dark.

But in my dream you were warm and I could smell your perfume and you kissed me like you loved me. I didn’t want to wake up and have it end. But I did, in an empty bed.

My dear Mary,

I just got back from the funeral. I took Rosie, kind of against my better judgement, because the bloody books all say that you should respect the child’s wishes about these things and let them decide how much they want to engage with the process, and she said she wanted to go. It was closed casket, so I didn’t think it’d be too distressing.

She was a champ throughout the actual service but in the car on the way home she had an absolute hysterical meltdown, and kept repeating, “She’s never going to come back! She’s never going to come back!”

Father of the bloody year material, I am. I pulled over to the side of the road and took her out of her carseat and let her cry it out in my lap, until she hiccuped herself to sleep.

I cried too. I’m crying now.

It wasn’t like with you… it was sad, but not tragic. She had all the long years you never got, and she just went to sleep one night and never woke up. It’s how I’d like to go, someday. But as far as I can tell Rosie has no memory of your death and so this was like the first time for her.

She left the house at Baker Street to Sherlock, obviously. I got all of her jewelry, to hold in trust for when Rosie is old enough to wear it. Some of it’s really nice. It’s all sorted into custom-made boxes, and as I went through them I noticed there was a missing space.

It was those earrings, the ones she basically forced you to take because you made the mistake of admiring them where she could hear you. I got your jewelry box out of the attic and took them out, and put them back with the rest of her collection. There’s a necklace and a bracelet that go along with them. Maybe someday Rosie will wear them and get to remember you both.

She was such a good woman, the nearest Rosie came to a grandmother, and a second mother to all the rest of us. She got herself out of a life she hated and built a new and better one. And now she’s never coming back.

If you could come back to me, to us, I would do anything at all to make that happen. I’d harrow hell like Orpheus for Eurydice.

Rosie’s awake, and she’s calmed down now, enough to start agitating for ice cream. I think we’re going to do that.

The thing you’re supposed to do with a child to help them adjust to the loss of a parent is to maintain a space where they can feel free to talk about it and come to their own conclusions. And so every bloody day I talk to her about you. Just enough that she knows it’s not a secret and that she doesn’t have to hide her feelings about it from me.

But I haven’t looked at your photos with her in months now and, well…

I don’t know who she’s thinking of, in that drawing. Based on the hair I’d say Janine or Molly. They were both around a lot back then, Molly especially. Even though she’s off in Sussex now she still visits and skypes with Rosie a lot.

She does remember you, at least a little bit. I asked her about that tonight, and she thought about it for a minute and said, “Mummy said not to hurt the spider.”

And my jaw literally dropped because I had completely forgotten about you and the bloody spiders. You would never let me swat them. You’d always trap them under a glass and take them outside.

You said, once, “There’s a difference between ‘can kill’ and ‘should kill.’ I’m clear on that one now.”

That’s a good thing for her to remember about you, isn’t it? Kindness?

Though seriously, woman. Spiders.

Rosie made me completely forget what I was going to write about, tonight. So what else do I have to tell you? The ‘hevin’ bit? Yeah, even after rowing with you about whether we’d get her baptized and whether we’d raise her religious, it turns out that when your beautiful daughter asked me, swimmy eyed, where you are, I lied like a fucking rug.

And hell, maybe I’m wrong about this being all there is to it. We go down to the little church in our neighborhood from time to time. She likes to play in their playground. And I’ve prayed for you. Even if I don’t have faith I figure it can’t hurt. Maybe somewhere you’re actually reading these letters.

I’m not sure if that idea makes it better or worse.

She’s so bloody brilliant, Mary, and it kills me that you aren’t here to see it. She asked me how to spell ‘picture’ but the rest of that she did all on her own. She’s the best writer in her class, and she’s always emailing everyone little stories and letters.

Yes, we give kids that age email addresses now. We live in the future.

I think she gets that, the writing, from me. I’ve been writing again myself… fiction, this time. It may actually be a novel, though it’s still coming to me. It’s a good yarn, I think, a Victorian detective story. I’ve got a lot of raw material to use though obviously I have to change the details around. I gave one of Anderson’s lines to the genius detective character. The actual genius detective read over that chapter for me and I thought he was going to murder me with a toasting fork. It was great.

I don’t know exactly what Rosie gets from you. Some of it’s obvious… her fine bones, her big eyes. But I never knew you when you were young, and there’s nobody I can ask what you were good at in school.

I have to look for the other stuff. She’s got your kindness, anyway. And your courage.

As a legacy, I don’t think you could do much better.

My Mary-

It’s been a long time since I’ve written one of these. And the reason for not writing and the reason for writing now are the same.

I’ve met someone.

I think you’d like her, actually. She’s funny, and smart. And I think you wouldn’t want me to be alone forever, though… I truly don’t know. You could be possessive of what was yours.

And I was so yours. Mind, body, heart, soul.

But Rosie needs a mum. No, that’s not true, though Gemma will be a good stepmum. She’s got two girls of her own, thirteen and seventeen. All of them get along really well. What Rosie needs is you, and the rest of the mum stuff can be handled by anybody, including me. I’ve got this “single parent of a daughter” thing down to a science, now. I can make three separate types of plaits and I’ve already got the menstruation talk queued up for… sometime next year, probably. I want to get it out of the way before she’s likely to need it.

I need somebody. And so I joined a “Parents without Partners” meetup group and went out to do just that.

It’s not like it was, with you. There’s an element of calculation to the whole thing that I’m not entirely happy with. I need someone to help me get through life. And she had been a stay-at-home mum for fifteen years when her husband died and they’ve been scratching ever since. She needs someone with money, which is, actually, me now. “A Study in Scarlet” stayed on the bestseller lists for twelve weeks. I’ve got a three-book contract to follow it up.

Neither of us are going into this with any illusions it’s a grand love story. But we get on well and I think it’ll be happy enough.

This is going to be the last one of these I will write. Gemma deserves for me to freely give whatever of my heart I have left.

So here’s the truth. Let the record show that when John Hamish Watson married Mary Elisabeth Watson, nee Morstan, nee Rosamund… it was because he couldn’t bear not to. And even though I’ve been your widower far longer than I was your husband, even knowing how it would turn out-

Why I see the Barclays share price as a buy for my pension

It’s been many years since the full State Pension, currently a little over £8,500 per year, has been seen as enough to get us comfortably through our more mature years. And with the age at which we qualify for it steadily rising, the sooner we plan for retirement the better.

I’ve had a couple of company pensions through my career, and while having my employers contributing to my fund was a very good thing, the ability for pension fund managers to deliver an attractive retirement income is not apparent to me. The classic route of buying an annuity would leave me with two things I definitely don’t want — a poor annual return, and the capital gone should I die even the day after I retire.

Managing your pension

I’ve already transferred one of my pensions to my Self-Invested Personal Pension (SIPP), because I’m convinced that the best person to manage my long-term interests is me. And I’m in the process of transferring another, so I’m building a shortlist of candidates.

Knowing that shares in top UK companies have wiped the floor with other forms of investment for more than a century has convinced me to base my pension strategy on dividend-paying FTSE 100 shares. I think that’s especially valid today with the index set to deliver a yield of almost 4.5% — and picking the better yielders can surely get me a better overall dividend return than that.

I also see another advantage to doing it myself, in that my long-term horizon means I can ignore the market sentiments that would turn many big fund managers away from currently unpopular stocks. They really don’t like to be seen as holding short-term losers when it’s time to release those quarterly figures.

Barclays on the list

That’s one of the reasons I’m seriously looking at Barclays (LSE: BARC) shares right now. Taking a contrarian position on the stock, I like buying shares when I believe the market is wrong about them.

I know the whole banking sector is in the dumps because of Brexit, and the major uncertainty it leaves hanging over the business. But while the City institutions hate uncertainty, I’ve grown to love it over the years and have managed to use it to buy cheap shares many times.

On the dividend front, Barclays is forecast to deliver a yield of 4% this year, with 2019 predictions pushing that up to 4.8%. Yield alone is not a sufficient reason to buy a stock, mind, as there’s no guarantee it will be forthcoming. But Barclays’ dividends are set to be covered around 3.3 times by earnings this year, with cover still coming in at 2.8 times, even after the mooted 2019 hike in the payment.

I see undervaluation

The other attraction of Barclays is that its shares are trading at only around half the Footsie’s long-term P/E valuation, with the predicted multiple of 7.7 this year, dropping to 7.2 for 2019.

I’m not going to pretend that Barclays doesn’t still face potential problems, but I found my colleague Roland Head’s take on last month’s Q3 figures enlightening. Roland’s thoughts suggest to me that Barclays is now past the turnaround point, and it’s firmly on my SIPP shortlist.
