Vito x Lerche (vaguely. probably.)

Lerche is a pleasant company on the condition that he not be accompanied by Vito. It is not to say that Vito perhaps does not enjoy being around Lerche. Saying so would be absurd, when often he went on months on end with only the older man to dissect his thoughts. Dear Celestial. He didn’t even think he’d had problems with his few lingering thoughts.

The problem lies within the fact that Lerche felt far too interested in his thoughts– for someone who merely wished to survive day in and out. 

“Vito,” Comes the steady voice he’s long been familiar with, “Have you had enough of dancing around me?” 

“...” Quickly averting his eyes, Vito tries to not look constipated. Because he’s not- At least shouldn’t be. Lerche’s last gambit with an odd looking snake still left him feeling queasy, but not ill. “If anything, I wonder if it even matters to you.”

“Why you wish to live?” Lerche laughs in that curious way of his, “I find that rather important.”

“Years down the line does not count for importance,” Vito pauses before tilting his head, “And that does not seem to be something you can afford down on the Surface.”

Lerche leans back onto the withered tree, lamp light flickering against his weathered skin. That specific look comes over the man- one Vito has seen several times before. One he pretends he didn’t have the name for.

“Landmarks are those that are weathered and worn.” Lerche’s smile turns tighter, “Isn’t it so, even the most astute would only know what stays?” 

Vito muses over that for a second. There is not much fault in that.

“Well, why do you?” Vito replies earnestly. It’s not something grand or terrifying he needs to keep close to his heart. He’d rather not, counted as enough reason to him. Want and will was the way he lived.

Lerche seems mildly taken aback.

To the Vito who followed him around, it was the equivalent of stumbling backwards in shock. Lerche is emotive- all good storytellers were- but the genuinity hidden in that mere gesture sends Vito into an emotional recoil. He’s not sure what to do with the fact that he might be a bit endeared- and not just obligated.

“Me?” Lerche echoes, as if haunted with what thoughts came from that. It’s only fair that he gets cross in the ricochet of his own question- but to Vito’s disappointment Lerche laughs. “Isn’t my age enough? Seeing everyone scour research to reach what I’ve long got.” 

Vito shakes his head, assuming that his question will lead nowhere once more.

“I don’t need a reason, I just don’t feel like dying.” Vito muses over it some more, before he makes a move to sharpen his knife. Cleaning would be a good call too- goop covered and dull from trudging through an unfriendly thrush. All that for an unidentifiable plant he’s sure Lerche will discard two days past. 

To his surprise, Lerche elaborates.

“Instinct and want do not always go hand in hand,” he grieves, “Did you know I had a child?”

Vito very carefully does not react. He doesn’t touch the feelings that come hiding behind the thin layer of curiosity- he’s finally learning more about his companion. 

“Well, I would only know of what you’ve told me.”

“A legacy” Lerche sighs, “A legacy is a treasure one may not often get to have.”

Vito’s not sure if he should point out that his child is very decidedly not there. But as tragedies are on the ark, he has the grace to let Lerche say as he wills.

“As such, I like the idea of a legacy. Not being one- I wouldn’t dare.” Lerche smiles, “Owning a legacy though… Not that is what that child was.” 

“Then what do you mean?” 

“Well, I’d like to one day tell a legend I see first hand. Change? Destruction of what we know?”

Vito’s stare could only be described as disbelief.

“That’s what it is? Or- well, then what?”

“I lied,” Lerche smoothly adds on, “Perhaps I just want to see all that I can see- you know I’m fond of things like that. My child has long gone on her own path and I have no need to haunt her steps.”

Vito doesn’t believe him. Vito surprisingly doesn’t believe in a lot of things Lerche says. Perhaps it was the trust in what he’s fed is for some greater part of living. Brushing off the implication that Lerche just had a family he’s long separated from Vito can’t help but feel irritation at how easily Lerche marks his words as bullshit.

“Alright.”

Lerche barks out in laughter, “Maybe you’ll be a part of it, Vito. You’d be a brilliant talent to bring into my stories.” 

Vito sighs and shakes his head with exasperation before settling back into the rhythmic grindstone. 

“You won’t get much story from me- or at least more than you already have. If there’s a journey it ends with that terrible escape. I just wanted to live.”

“Is that so?” Lerche taps the binding of his book, “If that’s so, you should’ve just stayed with the Order.”

“...What?” 

“Wasn’t it easier to live up there? You certainly don’t seem pleased with the state of ‘life’ down and around here. The endless faction wars, the greed, sitting ducks that we all are,” Lerche flicks to a page with sketches of the corpse of a Unity Order soldier. One that Vito had to fend off and bury, “All you had to do was submit Show your hackles and your neck. They wouldn’t bite the herd they lead.”

“Just because I miss ignorance does not mean I will simply retreat back into it.”

Vito hadn’t meant to let it sound so harsh. He knows his decisions are impractical, after all he saw Reue fall his way to the top. He’d seen plenty of people go that path. Easy. Safe. Convenient. He can’t help but wonder if they felt nothing of it. That submission.

Or was it truly the thought of yielding to another that plagued him?

“It’s not that much different down here.”

“It is.”

“How so?”

Vito struggles to find the words. Before laughing mirthlessly.

“For one, I like to think that everything I did was of my own will.”

“So it was the idea of choice? Is that it?”

“They didn’t give me a second option, so I had to find it.”

Lerche seemed to think that Vito was hiding something deeper. Perhaps something more inspiring- more meaningful- something worthy to document in that almost eternal book of his.

“If  that is what you consider true,” Lerche relents, ”But besides instinct and beside will, there is something else that is controlling you.”

Vito carefully does not let himself linger on what that implies.

“Factions are like sheep,” comes Lerche’s abrupt voice. “Led by the nose until they must meet their use.”

Vito laughs, “Aren’t livestock like those far too valuable for slaughter? Not even your generation would have been familiar with them”

“Words that outlived their time, I fear.” Lerche simply shrugs off, “Perhaps it’s poetic that only people are merely livestock now.”

Vito hesitates as he holds onto Lerche’s bloodstained bag. No sign of wear or struggle as if the owner was attacked. He’s not sure he’s ever seen Lerche try to fight. Patience was a learnt trait and he’s reminded of it constantly when confronting the oddities that cling to that man.

“Is there any particular reason you’re telling me this?”

“You seem bothered.”

Vito wants to bite back with ‘shouldn’t you be as well?’ or ‘It’s natural.’ He could afford pity and grief on the ark- he could not assume that Lerche had the chance to be the same.

“...Weren’t you just talking to them?” Vito tries to grasp some kind of fact to relate back to Lerche, “Wouldn’t you lament the fact they will no longer have their story recorded?”

Lerche smiles very slightly. 

“Oh Vito, I record deaths before I record lives.” 

“What’s the point of recording deaths if you don’t even- If they don’t even live?”

Left with silence, Vito stands up from where Lerche was waiting for him. This time it didn’t look like a simple raid done by another faction- the kills were too brutal. Too careless with equipment that had long been forced into scarcity. They didn’t have the knowledge the ark did, but they developed technology too quickly- in a way the head of the church likely couldn’t agree with.

The itch comes again. Why had they let Lerche live?

“Do not take me for a biased person, my friend.” Lerche nods to the broken crowd by his feet, “But I warned them appropriately.”

“They never had a chance.”

“Indeed. Another late night for you?”

Vito glances at the buildings and then to Lerche. 

“If factions treat people as livestock, what are you?” Vito lets the unspoken ‘we’ run away. He knows that he didn’t want that answer.

“I don’t know.” comes honestly. “But I find that doesn’t matter.”

Vito doesn’t catch himself fast enough, but he catches Lerche just fine. His hands moving faster than his mind- he grabs Lerche’s arm. 

“Lerche.” comes seriously, “What do you want from me?”

Objectively speaking- the answer Vito wished most for was to be a simple mercenary. The trade off of daily necessities being provided in order for putting his neck on the line was simple, but anything that came from this guy couldn’t be. Vito’s done this same routine until his nails stained red and his mind worked on practicing indifference. It’s cruel that the only moment he truly acted on the hesitation was when Lerche felt so distant. 

The world was cruel anyways, so Vito packs aways those feelings.

Lerche meets his eyes calmly. If it had been someone else, that would be a sign of sincerity. Instead, Vito watches as Lerche studies his own face with strong fascination. As if he didn’t feel any real threat at all.

… Not that Vito would do anything anyways.

“I just find you interesting to have around. This old man has the luxury of boredom after all.”

“...”

Lerche turns his body fully as Vito is hit with the hilarity of it all- one who sat through a bloody conflict and one who didn’t. One would think Vito had been there for the massacre judging by the blood on his hands.

Taking a sticky step closer to Vito, Lerche leans into his shoulder. 

“It’s not often you run into someone who values death as much as you do.” Vito feels oddly stifled- unsure what to do with any part of his body. Lerche laughs into his neck- warm air brushing against Vito’s scarred ear. “And I’m not keeping you here, Vito. I’m not your shepherd.” 

Vito’s heart clenches hearing that.

He couldn’t. 

Would he survive? 

He pauses. He’s not entirely sure what to make of that thought that suddenly hit him. Not so gently as a ship hitting shore- but as if a heavy caravan had derailed and knocked into him.

Never before had the air felt so arid. A miracle despite the (bloodied) puddles around them.

“Aren’t you?”

Lerche’s face is hidden from view, but he can feel the way the man’s face shifts against Vito’s stiff body. 

“Now what does that mean?”

Somehow Vito isn’t convinced that Lerche doesn’t know- if anything Lerche knew better than Vito himself. Feeling intense resignation, Vito lowers his head and looks down at Lerche’s shoulder. 

“You’re exhausting.” 

“And yet you stay.” Lerche smiles, “It’s not like I treat you poorly, so does the reason matter?” 

It does. Vito reminds himself.

“Alright,” Vito says.

Perhaps Vito was like a dog. Loyal even when it bites back at him. He still can’t get used to the killing no one calls murder. He can’t stand finding Lerche’s neutrality despite claiming the same for himself. And yet he stays.

Backing away from Lerche in a poor attempt to separate himself with these feelings, he wonders how he’s still falling into the same pitfalls he criticized merely years ago. Nothing changed except the environment. Vito wonders why he’s fine with that.

Lerche is smiling. Looking at him as if he was ready to accept whatever Vito chose- including leaving. There is no choice in that- he knows that he cannot leave and still be himself.

Want and will are different things, Vito acknowledges.

“... I don’t know why I bother.”

Lerche takes that as an affirmation that Vito would be following once more. Turning heel without checking behind him, Lerche heads for their next destination sooner than expected.

“Well, I managed to bargain for some dried meat for you before it happened.” Lerche gestures backwards (presumably to the sack Vito was carrying for him), “Nothing they would bother to confiscate.”

The bag feels heavier than mere food supplies should be.

Torao Mido: (IDOLiSH7)

Torao is the kind of character where you're like "literally why is he in the main cast when everyone else is a banger" and then you realize that his arc is just 4-5/6ths of the way into the story and you go Oh. Oh. I get it now. That's him. That said, I want to blast him with a fire hose.

Haruka Isumi: (IDOLiSH7)

Haruka was my discord pfp for several months and I think that says a lot already. I love him so much, he's like. so bulliable and he should be bullied. Dramatic ass teenager baby that dresses like an e-boy. I love him so much and every time he bleps (:P) in official art I want to Die. Prime blorbo material.

Nagi Rokuya: (IDOLiSH7)

I'll admit outright that, as someone who had Ouran High School Host Club change my brain chemistry forever when I was a child, and with i7 having a main character named Tamaki, I CONSTANTLY called Nagi "Tamaki" during the first season just because he was the silly blond weeb guy!! I was like holy shit there's two of them. And then I got to parts 3 and 4 and I was like Oh Holy Shit they're even more similar than I thought :'). Nagi is a BELOVED character of mine but it took a moment for me to grow into loving his character. I wish I saw more fan content of him because he fucking rocks, but he's also just on a different plane from a lot of the more popular characters and I get it. I love how everyone respects him as they should though. My king forever and ever.

Haruhi Fujioka: (Ouran High School Host Club)

SPEAKING OF OURAN HIGH SCHOOL HOST CLUB. Haruhi's arc in the anime and manga is a little different, and obviously the anime wasn't supposed to end where it did, but with the changes the director and writers made, I truly believe that it would be impossible for the animeverse to end the same way the mangaverse did. Anyways Haruhi is a really funny character because she's supposed to be the straightman in a lot of the jokes, but she's just as dramatic and silly as everyone else. And it's great. 10/10 protagonist, every time I think of her I think of that tumblr post about her with the big brown eyes and I go Yeah. yeah.

Jason Todd: (DC Comics; Batman)

(If you can't read that square, it says "SCOTT LOBDELL")

Jason was NOT my favorite DC character or even Robin for a long, long time. I only really got into his character when I started working on my fic, Beyond Imagination, and had to start analyzing what a younger Jason was like and how he would interact with the world in a modern day and age. All of the Batman characters get flanderized and mischaracterized by fanon and canon a lot, so it's hard to figure out what was generally agreed upon as canon unless you read yourself, but Jason's got a strong story and personality that really shined with his resurrection. I'd say it's one of the best uses of reviving a character thought to be dead, and every time I think about his death and like. both the in-universe and real life events that lead up to it, I get emotional. Great character that makes me deeply ill to think of from a meta-perspective.

Maya Amano: (Persona 2 Innocent Sin & Persona 2 Eternal Punishment)

Okay so. You may have noticed I tagged two Persona games for her and that's because, spoilers for Persona 2, the first Persona 2 (Innocent Sin) is a timeline that fails. The game with you resetting the timeline because you fucked up that badly, and the second Persona 2 (Eternal Punishment) is your second shot and doing things over. HOWEVER. Maya changes with the timelines because she was doomed to die with how things were set up in Innocent Sin, and fixing that to give the timeline a shot in Eternal Punishment changes her as a character. This bingo is more about Innocent Sin Maya, who is a 23 year old girlfailure reporter that makes me Deeply Deeply Ill. If you're ever curious, you can send me an ask and I'll talk about her more in depth because Persona 2 isn't the easiest game to play

ok so I was writing this in the tags but it got too long and started annoying me so

firstly, I think there's a panel in re:member of momo bleaching his own hair! I like to think that he did it himself the first few times (and probably messed up a little, because it takes, like, a lot of patience to properly section your hair like that, especially if your hair is short and you have adhd <- speaking from experience), and okarin got him an actual stylist as soon as he could. yuki should definitely not be trusted to do momo's bleach, but I do think he knows his way around basic hair dye (which I'll get to in a second), and since momo would probably need at least one or two other products on top of the bleach to actually get to white/silver I can see yuki insisting on doing those for him after the first time he sees him doing it at home. also, for context I'm pretty sure this was because of his earrings but after the first time I watched i7 had a very vivid memory of momo's hair looking something like this (I made a diagram in ibispaint just now because I didn't feel like describing it)

and I think that yuki would have done something like that for him, probably just with one colour, maybe in their earlier days to match an upcoming album or something, cause I find it kind of hard to believe with their image and everything that neither of them have ever had their hair coloured for things like that (plus yuki already has for the shuffle units).

anyway. about yuki (this is gonna be the long part)

so he also has that white(er) streak in his hair right? that's also not a natural anime hair thing. I'd have to check the exact point it appears but I know for sure that he doesn't have it when he meets ban and he does by the time he meets momo.

so the first option is that yuki just. decided to start dyeing his own hair. but i'm kinda mixed on whether this makes sense for him or not? he seems to be around the right kind of scene for stuff like that (looking at a lot of the side characters in re:member and their old band members in the anime) and I can see him just doing it on a whim one day, but consistently? for like, 3 years before joining an agency that might have made him do it to maintain his image? momo could reasonably grow his hair out a little before it gets too obvious, but yuki's being directly at his roots like that probably not so much, and I know I'm over-analysing and they probably weren't thinking about any of this when they gave him the streak but I just dont think he would bother with it unless he had a good reason. but maybe he just really loves that streak. who knows. maybe there is a canon explanation for this that I've just missed but i,dont care I love making things up

the second and more plausible option to me is that it was ban's idea. I know we never see him with anything but I like to think that he had them dye each other's hair when they started the whole idol thing, and maybe yuki decided to keep his and ban didn't (there's potential angst here). or maybe yuki fucked up really badly trying to do ban's and they ended up having to just dye it back to blue. maybe he keeps it because ban insists that he likes it and/or that it's part of his brand now, and it's not as much of a bother when ban does it for him - and momo gets the idea to dye his own hair as well when he inevitably takes over. or maybe yuki starts doing it himself after ban's disappearance, when he's clinging on to all the things they did together.

the third option is my favourite and it could follow either of the first two. I'm also not entirely sure if this is a thing that can actually be caused by dye/bleach but some people think it is and I know one person who it miiiight have happened to so let's just say it can for the sake of this post. but basically my theory is that at some point while they were doing the streak yuki and/or ban somehow managed to damage those hair follicles so badly that they stopped producing melanin and that section of his hair is just permanently white now. I'd say it happened because of stress but I don't think that would affect just the one area and it's funnier to me to think that one of them just fucked it up really really badly. the actual permanent damage could've happened at any point too it could've been yuki trying to do it on his own for the first time after months or years of ban doing it for him. it could've been momo he would feel so awful about it. endless possibilities all very amusing to me anyway this has post officially gotten way too long now thank you goodnight

The funniest thing to me is that when we see pre-idol Momo, his hair is blue. You're telling me this boy painstakingly dies the ends and the underside of his hair white every few weeks and not the top? Like, they could have just made his hair white and had the whole style make a hell of a lot more sense, but no, now I get to spend the rest of my days picturing Momo sitting in his stylists chair, getting really chummy with them because he spends almost as much time there as he does in the studio

(And that makes it better, doesn't it? The intentionality of it. The lengths Momo will go to twist his life around Yuki's)

(I would love to picture Yuki doing Momo's hair for him but tbh I do not think that would go well for Momo LOL I bet they do it once anyway, and it goes horribly, hilariously wrong and they both vow to never let Yuki touch hair dye again)

Gaku x Tsumugi from IDOLiSH7, what a power (and based) move to remove the otome aspect in the I7 anime but have one of the guys be purely in love with the manager of the rival boy band... they're not even "rivals" exactly, they're just co-workers in a somewhat competitive field, is the enviroment that gives it a forbiden fruit/rivals-to-lovers taste but they're actually friends all around lmao

There are many lovely married couples in JoJo, but from the non-canon that I like?? Kakyoin x Holly. Ho boy i have opinions. I have so many opinions. Especially on the idol side lmao.

Shipping:

obligatory shipping is fiction and tag all your things correctly. Write what you want and ship what you want bc again shipping is what you think would look good together not what is canon or healthy. what you ship is not reflective of who you are, yeada yeada

1) shipping slash parings as a fixed pairings isn't a sin. yes irl the concept of fixed top and bottom is kind of ridiculous as an attempt to heteronormalize queerness and many couples switch but shipping is fiction. you're allowed to break away from reality as long as you're aware that gay couples irl don't conform to one set role

2) Shipnames like spiritshipping was cute even if it was hard to tell who was being shipped. confusing as all hell yes but still cute

3) Idk if this is unpopular or not but shipping is not inherently romantic? Its relationshipping, relationships come in all shapes and forms. You can absolutely pair characters together in platonic, familial, whatever manner you want. Shipping is not automatically romantic! (though please do tag your shit properly... i don't want to read a platonic relationship when im browsing the slash tags)

4) Polyculing a ship definitely doesn't solve every problem but it sure makes them more interesting!

5) My absolute favourite shipping trope of all time is when person A is head over heels obsessed with an oblivious person B, full on stalker, possessive, and pining so much you could probably grow a whole forest from it. What person A doesn't know is that person B is equally obsessed with them. God i love that so much, just two people so obsessed with each other that they don't care about morality, they are each others morality.

A slightly different but no less tasty flavour is that person B knows and enables person A for non-malicious reasons.

Idol Games:

1) idol games don't need to be dark to be fun please stop making everything dark and edgyTM sometimes we just need good fun songs and thats it

2) on the same vein but idol games with dark themes doesn't automatically make them good. I7 succeeded because it touched upon how fan culture is inherently toxic and the pressure that idols face both on a corporate and public front. Enstars was good because it tackled very real themes like self belonging, the aftereffects of bullying, unresolved trauma and the many many vicious cycles that arise from it, and capitalism. Just inserting dark themes willy nilly without care for what topics you're addressing will get you nowhere and just makes you seem silly and an asshole

3) The plot of forming an idol group to save your school is cheesy and overdone. Forming an idol group to save anything is just such a dumb plot point

4) a very enstars specific gripe: the sakuma's are vampires or at the very least use vampirism as a coping method to deal with a dominant genetic illness. They aren't human, never have been never will be.

Otherkin/copinglink in my hot takes? inconceivable

Other character hot takes include: Kanata is a fallen god who has lost his followers and those who try and worship him are doing it in a fundamentally wrong way thus never restoring his power. Only Madara knows how to properly worship Kanata but refuses to do so as he wants him to live as a human. Kuro is absolutely a dragon youkai and simply didn't want to think up of a convincing name and named himself dragon oni to throw everyone off. Mika is a discarded doll who is learning to be human. Sakasaki practices modern magick and does incorporate science in his magick, yes those two can exist together. The idea that flowers rejuvenates Ritsu actually makes sense? Flowers contain sugars and water which can be accessed through biting and are known to have herbal properties which would theoretically combat whatever genetic ailment they have. Rose petals specifically are associated with collagen and skin care which would be a perfect option to use in order to combat sunsickness. Flowers are also equated with youthfulness so yeah. it makes sense why flowers could act as an emergency store for vampires

5) idol game fandoms suck. plain and simple. you either get fanwars, character discourse, or kinnies and neither of them are things i have energy to deal with

Saint Seiya:

1) saint seiya was good in the sense that it was quintessential shounen. There is so much shounen gumption stored into those bronze boys its not even funny. Makes for a great template tho (its why every new StS series keeps adapting/remaking the 12 temples and nothing else...)

2) Poseidon and the Marina did very little wrong. Most of the Poseidon arc was kickstarted by Kanon who had a very valid reason for waking up a grumpy primordial (possibly cathonic?) god from his sleep. The other marina were protecting their home and following orders much like the bronze saints. It just so happens that their goals didn't quite align

3) Kuruma really doesn't do justice to any of the characters. theres so much potential in everyone to be really interesting but he just... doesn't deliver.... Silver saints, the secondary bronze saints, female saints, just those alone carry so much potential but nope. nothing is ever done with them. Marina and Spectres too. Even asgardians have so much going on that it is fascinating just to speculate on what they could do and what they could bring to the table.

4) Half of the StS experience is creating a whole cast of OCs for the universe. I feel like its a rite of passage at this point and its half of what makes staying in the fandom fun

5) If you don't treat the netflix adaption as an adaption and just as a standalone show its actually not that bad. y'all just want to hate

Biomutant - Early Impressions

So. Biomutant’s out starting tomorrow, the reviews are in and, well…

From the looks of it, if you’re a fan of excessively safe design trends mashed together and of original works only coyly iterating on tested-and-proven mechanics, you’ll love it. Some games can take in common mechanics and rise past their milquetoast heritage thanks to bits and pieces of technical genius (see Monolith’s Shadow of) duology and others seem to bask in how unabashedly okay the end-product can be. Judging by the reviews, this is largely where Experiment 101’s freshman effort stands.

As far as pros are concerned, the level design and obvious Breath of the Wild undertones are praised. Biomutant oozes personality and charm, the art design is gorgeous, and its crafting and character creation systems allow for the creation of unique permutations. There’s a lot of room for generalists and minmaxers alike, with even restrictive builds having plenty of internal leeway. This obviously sets the tone for a high degree of replayability, especially considering how investing in some resistance buffs early on can allow you to tackle certain high-risk zones earlier. Combat feels generally fluid, and no amount of class-specific tinkering changes the fact that all classes can use the game’s full arsenal at any given point. You can play as a Commando without ever investing in your character’s Wung Fu (the in-universe martial arts system) that you’ll still have a base amount of proficiency with punches, kicks and jabs.

Things get a little muddier if the game’s less-favored aspects are considered. Your avuncular narrator’s propensity to jabber along can be tweaked in the Settings menu, but the consensus seems to involve the notion that constantly having someone step in to translate an NPC’s gibberish breaks the game’s immersion. I fully expect some streamers to crank the Narrator’s slider all the way to the left, in order to reduce him to all but the most essential of voiced barks. In a way that’s somehow associated, some reviewers have lamented the game’s eagerness to tackle difficult topics while smothering them in baby-talk. Obviously, this is in place in order to evoke things like Mad Max’s linguistic shifts or the notion that you’re effectively looking at non-specific mammals voicing concrete thoughts in a borrowed language, Planet of the Apes style, so some shifts in terminology can be explained. As far as the Narrator’s concerned, for instance, you lost your Mooma and Popsy as a kitling. Most characters have similarly simplistic names, and it’s not that much of a bother if you recall how other world-builders noted for their lack of confidence gave us the Gunganese patois of Basic, in the Star Wars canon. If, however, you’re not a fan of vocally restrained British men cheering your display of psionic energy with an approving “Crackazam!” like you’re watching a Michael Rosen video before it turns into a meme; chances are you’ll get tired of the overall presentation fairly quickly.

Then, there’s the fact that the game’s mechanics are a little iffy, at times. You’re expected to be able to attack, block and counter with the same ease as in an Arkham or Shadow of title, but some parry prompts are frustratingly easy to miss, with the auto lock-on system not being entirely helpful. I’ve read of cases where the player character fully disengaged after dispatching a single enemy, requiring either manual target selection or manual mêlée or ranged attacks to re-enter a fighting stance. Each Wung Fu technique also comes with a “Super Wung Fu” attack that can only be landed once the requisite meter fills, with the associated wind-up oftentimes being long enough to ensure that by the time your flying pile-driver lands, the enemies have long-since vacated your immediate vicinity. Not every stance seems to be equally useful, and not every mutation or permanent perk seems equally balanced. As for what gets you to attack the locals ad nauseam, the sidequests are noted as being nondescript. Only the main quest has any real character, with the rest consisting of Ubisoft-alike fetch-a-thons, of outposts to clear and merchants and service providers to unlock. So far, so open-world.

The morality system is also noted as being dated in design, seeing as nearly anything that involves some sort of choice is broken down to simplistic black-or-white choices. It also comes across as being meaningless, as apparently nothing stops a purely evil character from bucking their trend at the last possible second to snag the Good ending. There’s precious little in terms of bonuses or perks to gain either as a benevolent warrior or a rampaging marauder.

Otherwise, stability issues have been noted on all consoles, with the PS5 being unable to render the game in native 4K thanks to nebulous issues encountered by Experiment 101. The PC seems the most stable of all options, with some reviewers needing some resolution scaling in order to offset their sub-30 FPS counts and others stating that a 2080 Super and a current-gen i7 with 16 GBs of RAM nets them a rock-solid 60 FPS with VSync enabled. Considering the environment’s detail levels, consider me cautiously optimistic for a no-holds-barred 1080p experience.

So, is it worth it? I haven’t played it yet, but it looks like one of those games you’re probably better off putting aside for a decent sale. Luckily for us all, the Steam Summer Sale is right around the corner, and THQ Nordic isn’t shy in gutting its price tags…

Based on what I’ve seen, it doesn’t seem like it’s worth a sixtyburger. Thirty or forty bucks, however, seems like a decent proposition.

Neither machine has a screen you could honestly describe as good. Colours are none too vivid and the viewing angles mediocre. There’s not a lot of brightness about either. But the Acer’s glossy screen - the Samsung’s panel is matte - is the least worst of the two in all ways, unless you plan on being outdoors a lot, when reflection becomes an issue, as it does with all shiny panels.The Acer is also the better connected, with three USB 2.0 ports, 10/100Mbps Ethernet, HDMI and VGA connectors against the Samsung’s single USB 2.0, one USB 3.0 and HDMI. Both machines come with single-band 2.4GHz 802.11n Wi-Fi but without optical drives. Samsung gives you Bluetooth but Acer doesn’t.I’m not a fan of Samsung's positioning the USB and HDMI ports at the back. I prefer my ports, sockets and power jacks on the side where I can see the little buggers. Twice I folded the Samsung shut only to notice something I’d forgotten about sticking out the back as I made to shove it into my backpack.
