Can you talk about the 3 of their different dance styles or interpretations of the same moves in the 3J dance? I'm also curious if you think that they each shone the brightest in own solos or do you think another choreo would've suited one of them more. Also versatility of the members? The 3 dances were similar enough in style (I think at least) but had different feels to them and who do you think was the most consistent throughout and could channel the moves and feelings of all the dances?
❗️❗️⚠️⚠️ i know that most will be going off of the home party 3J URBAN DANCE video instead of the bts+/channel+ fancam video(s) in my post !!!!! it’s a shame that non-subscribers can’t see the solo ver because there is always SO MUCH that the camera misses when zooming around❗️❗️⚠️⚠️
“Can you talk about the 3 of their different dance styles or interpretations of the same moves in the 3J dance?”
in the performance, each member stuck to their usual style in all three combos. you can watch other fancams (JH/JM/JK) of the same piece to see how they differ (note: i just linked the ones for “fire” since things are easier to pick apart there, but lmk if you want me to explain more)
1. hoseok
was definitely strongest with the upper body out of all the members. i know that it’s a stylistic choice to have very controlled arms (looking @ you PJM), but i prefer when they’re looser for combos like their first one. the only thing i didn’t like about him was sometimes the hands were too splayed and his snapback prevented me from seeing his eyes, which is an important part of a dancer’s stage presence. it also covered half his face when the stage lights were on him :/
0:40 - hobi’s arms are the “floppiest” out of everyone’s. he doesn’t hold/place them into positions, and it gives the illusion of more freedom with his movement
0:51 - shoulders are most fluid. they move the both horizontally (side to side) and on the diagonal (one is up higher than the older). just watch the vid to see the difference; maybe slow down the speed to really see how he interprets that step
1:35 - 1:40 - the amount of movement he’s able to achieve in that single eight count is unreal. the way he packs so much into so little is 😛😛😛
2:14 - his body rolls move thru his whole body + the connection he had when he kept his arm on jimin’s shoulder was a nice touch
thanks kat 4 the gif!
uhhh and the fact that he was able to switch legs on the way down …..the Control you guys. the CONTROL. he maintained the split while sinking down to the floor and that’s some hard shit bruh. bitch is more flexible than we thought :/
thanks kat 4 the gif!
2:42 - the way he bounces so hard when he pops back….tru talent you guys + the musicality thru this whole song is off the charts
2:45 - i love the range of motion he uses with his head here. he’s really using his eyes and chin to address the whole theater/audience and even looking to the ceiling, which is a nice contrast to the shadow that you get with his snapback on
3:19 - 🗣🗣🗣🗣 HIS FUCKING HANDS OH MY GOD 🗣🗣🗣🗣
3:55 - usage of head & the connection of his hand (it’s literally touching his chin and it moves his neck instead of the two limbs being disjointed and moving on their own)
i’m not gonna bother to timestamp the rest of the combo bc the whole thing is just an example of hobi really fitting the choreography !! this post would literally be 2x as long !!! im sorry
2. jimin
i’ve talked about his style before, but he really blew me out of the water during this performance. i was pleasantly surprised by his versatility. of course, as with everyone else, i don’t think he matched up completely with all the combos, but he really brought his a-game to this performance. he shone the most in take you down
0:13 - 0:25 - Pure Sex™ 😛😛😛😛😛 he hits every beat w precision and power n there’s so much energy thru his whole body, but he still executes the choreo precisely
0:40 - the resistance….holy shit
0:46 - the way he turns his feet out and inclines his head to the side although the steps are super fast. it’s always in the tiny details, and his lower/upper body coordination is impeccable
🗣🗣🗣🗣 THAT ENTIRE SECOND COMBINATION I’M FUCKING SORRY HE REALLY OUT THERE DOING THE MOST™ HITTING EVERY COUNT, PULLING THRU THE MOTIONS, HEAD TO TOE, GOING 500%, SNAPPING SO HARD THAT HIS HAIR IS GOING EVERYWHERE BUT STILL MAINTAINING ELASTICITY MY ENTIRE FUCKING HEAD FLEW OFF AT THAT POINT (lmfao)
1:28 - the contrast of his whole body contracting in VS the minimal isolations w his chest right after like. wow. an icon
2:09 - his snap . bye.
3:01 - his back/left arm still moving up (u can compare to jungkook) when hobi has a mini-solo. an example of moving the body even when you have no technical “choreography” to keep things from looking dead
3:37 - i like his interpretation of that move the best out of the rest of them. his elbows are close to 90º angles and his opposition is good
3:48 - this is probably bc he’s technically the most flexible out of dance line (though debatable w hobi) and his classical background, but his jump is the nicest
3. jungkook
okay. to be brutally honest here, jungkook was incredibly underwhelming in this performance. he didn’t stand out to me in any particular fashion, especially when hoseok and jimin really went IN. i think it was a combination of 1) stress/exhaustion/etc bc bts relies heavily on him when they’re on tour just because of line distribution and the songs they choose to perform 2) not enough rehearsal time or prior dance experience 3) his costume hindering movement
the only person’s outfit i was happy with was jimin, because his pants were tight and his shirt was tucked in and the sleeves weren’t baggy. you could clearly see all his movements and all his facials and the motion translated easily from his body to the clothes he was wearing.
jungkook’s giant hoodie swallowed up a ton of details, and there are nuances in stylistic interpretation that i missed because of it. i know this is probably not his fault, but i was still disappointed since i couldn’t see any shoulder stuff (unless it was large) or how he used his torso
this aside, let’s get to it
0:48 - i can’t see super clearly, but he seems to have the footwork timed correctly compared to the other members. i’ll have to check with the original choreography bc timing can differ depending on how you want to deal with it, but the legs are clean to the point of being able to stand out, which is Güd Shit
0:51 - again, his hoodie is obscuring a ton of upper body movement, but he seems to be really throwing himself off his axis and curving the torso
2:06 - adslkghasdg his hands are so sexy here … i love the way he flicks his fingers out and then twists his wrist? i don’t know what it is, but it’s just so confident n reassured and In Charge i love
3:01 - he’s bouncing and grooving with the music when hobi has his solo, and i really dig it
3:12 - the way he telegraphs movements up from his lower body to the way he flicks his chin out
3:55 - you can definitely see it better on his solo fancam (sorry ugh. it’s only available to bts+), but he used his head effectively and it looked really cool w the rest of the choreography (hands etc)
again, there isn’t much to talk about with jungkook. i watched their stage over and over and compared their fancams multiple times, but he really wasn’t giving it his 100%. even at the beginning of “his” combo, there was a ton of choreo that he missed that hoseok and jimin had picked up on, and i’ve seen him do much better in other settings, so i’m not holding it against him as a dancer
this isn’t me being biased against jungkook (i love him a lot ok), but i am looking at it from a purely critical standpoint. there wasn’t anything particularly amazing; it looked like he didn’t rehearse as much as other members or he was too tired to perform well. touring for that long with such a taxing show really takes it out on you, and i was already unsatisfied with how packed their schedule is this summer….
“I’m also curious if you think that they each shone the brightest in own solos or do you think another choreo would’ve suited one of them more”
with the exception of jungkook, everyone looked the best doing their solos. however, jk seemed to be more comfortable/rehearsed w hobi’s solo
“Also versatility of the members? The 3 dances were similar enough in style (I think at least) but had different feels to them and who do you think was the most consistent throughout and could channel the moves and feelings of all the dances?”
i think jimin was easily the most versatile out of the three members here
he managed to make something in every combo & therefore consistently stood out when i was watching the group as a whole. there were some things that hobi interpreted well, but jimin was solid as a fucking ROCK during this performance
from the power in the first combo……the way he moved in the 2nd (i’m still fucked up about 1:26 im sorry) …and parts of the last piece
of course, this is just personal preference, and i would say that hobi is definitely on the same level with him in terms of knowing/learning/performing choreography; i just vibed with jimin’s style more during this stage~
regardless, thank you so much for the detailed questions, and i’m sorry it took me this long to answer! i was trying to do it as best as i could, so please don’t hesitate to send me more specific messages (maybe to discuss only one member at a time or just one combination, etc) because i’d love to discuss more about dance with you guys
