FEBUWHUMP 2025 PROMPT LIST
this year's prompts were chosen through an open suggestion poll (in which we received over 4,000 prompts) and a subsequent vote, where 5,019 votes were submitted. the top 28 make up the core prompts, and the febuwhump mod's favourites that remain have become the alternates. the first prompt in the 28, "vocal chords", was our number one prompt of the vote, with 1,625 total votes.
i am so insanely excited to see what you all create with these prompts, and i hope they're inspiring enough to trigger a whole month's worth of creativity for you!
as an extra added challenge, some creators will be undertaking another, smaller goal, of including apples in each of their prompt fills as an ode to the wildly popular prompt suggestion of "apples" that didn't make it through to the poll. this is totally optional, but is a good extra challenge if you'd like to take part in it!
if you have any questions, please check out the faq before sending an ask, or skim the blog's previously asked questions to see if your question has already been answered.
please note: notifying the blog of completionist status will happen through a google form released towards the end of febuwhump, and if you are interested in joining the febuwhmp discord server, the link will be available to do so for one week towards the end of january.

favorite fics of 2024/basically just batfam fic rec list
It's that time of year guys, here is my favorite fics of 2024 in no specific order (aka my master batman fic rec list bc that's all i read this year with some spider-man thrown in there lmao). most of these have been in my previous rec lists, but this is just like one big frankenstein’s monster of a fic rec with all of them in one place <3
starting off strong, anything @bluelotuswrites's hands have touched is pure gold. Red is the Color of Sinners placed post UTRH where after being hit by bruce's batarang and now mute, jason decides to leave gotham and go to hell’s kitchen for a fresh start, but he keeps running into daredevil both in and out of costume. this is possibly the best jason of all time i rotate him in my mind like a microwave all day
The Hellblazer's Apprentice is an all blades jason fic where instead of continuing his lost days world tour, he meets john constentine and decides to learn magic to piss of bruce. blue added some lore to jason’s character in this that to this day makes my brain vibrate with excitement and the dynamic between john and jason is just ?? so good. both of these fics haunt me, they follow me wherever i go, i love them. read everything she's written, trust me
going with the theme of my favorite authors i read this year, @cdelphiki wrote my favorite read of the year and possibly all time Life Happens a fic that hit me like a sucker punch where tim and damian are both sent to a different dimension where everyone they know are comic book characters. with no other choice, they have to start a new life in this world while they wait for rescue. words just dont do it justice, please please read this fic. it’s the most beautiful story on growing and life
their other fic Jason and the Three Terrors crosses my mind at least once a day if not three times. jason is still with the league when talia charges him with getting damian, his cousin mara, and his secret sister athanasia to bruce safely from ra's. the rest of the fic is jason going from "i cant wait to get rid of these kids" to "these are my kids, i need to provide for them and keep them safe and i would die for them" 100/10 jason's character development is some of my favorite in any fic.
The Time Before is another of my favorites where jason is sent back in time to when he was 9 and goes to bruce for help and realizes maybe his memories of bruce maybe aren't all accurate. just read everything cdelphiki has ever written, trust me <3
Split by @wolfsbanesparks i have never been hooked on a character i previously did not know much about faster than when i read this fic. Billy and shazam are forcefully separated into separate bodies by black adam and then they have to try to keep billy's identity secret somehow while working with the justice league to fix them. the end of this fic had me sending paragraphs and 5 minute voice notes to my friends, trying to explain why i was so absolutely distraught and obsessed.
also by wolfsbanesparks, From the Shadows is basically everything you could ever want from a billy batson joins the batfam fic. it's got plot, it's got identity shenanigans, it's got badass magical billy, what more could you possibly need! seriously idk what is up with everything wolfbanesparks writes, but the endings are always so fucking good, 100/10.
Something in the Static by @bonerot19 is one of my favorite jason series ever, i go back to it constantly and think about it all the time. this is a series where jason's mom doesn't die and his dad isn't in prison, instead he's 17 working nights at a convenience store when everything changes and suddenly batman won't leave him alone. this is my favorite jason & steph best friends fic ever and the way this fic is paced scratches an itch in my brain, the flow of the story is just perfect
Buy Back the Secrets by @vinelark is the only ship fic on here and it deserves a place of honor. every time i get an email that it's updated an angel gets it's wings and my friends all get texts in all caps. Timkon fic where kon still doesn’t know tim’s civilian identity, but tim keeps calling for superboy when he's in trouble which leads to kon meeting him as a civilian. the identity shenanigans are just so top tier, its a 5 + 1 fic so every chapter is just just a new world of fun tropes. the chapter with tim's fake uncle and jason is actually probably my favorite chapter of a fic ever its so dear to me. as far as i'm concerned, this fic is the only timkon ever <3
Honoring Promises by LananiA3O is the shortest fic on this list and is the most important jason & dick post UTRH fics i've ever read. this fic both scratched an itch and created an itch because i need 100 more chapters and for it to never end. set post UTRH when dick starts to rethink his opinion on a note jason left him and realizes it was jason reaching out and decides to find him and fix things. this goes up there with RITCOS in the post UTRH fics where jason decides to just fuck off and do his own thing, i love them
Adopting a New Plan by A_Silly_Gander is yet another fic where jason winds up with an adoption problem when he first comes back to gotham. however, my favorite part of this whole fic is how the author writes jason making mistakes and being flawed and how those mistakes affect him. absolutely 10/10 character development and jason rejoining the batfam + damian and jaosn meeting in the LOA tag is just a mixture of all my favorite things, i love this fic so much
A Collision of Masks by MOVAZ is my favorite dick grayson fic ever, its set in a young justice AU where batman never joined the JL and YJ never met dick, so when the YJ team is sent to investigate a new vigilante, nightwing, identity shenanigans ensue. this is seriously such a fun fic, i loved all the crossover between dick's many identities and the YJ team
Cards on the Table by @wesslan is just!!! so fun oh my god. the chapter titles are to this day my favorite things ever they enhance the experience. it’s about tim being a scam fortune teller who knows a lot more than he should about the upper class due to his nighttime stalking. he winds up meeting the batfam and giving some scarily accurate advice which leads to him being tied up in their business and lots of lying <3 it’s such a fun fic and i just love the vibes 100/10
Hand in Unloveable Hand (a chokehold) by @a-large-orange-cat is by far my favorite fucked up tim fic! while tim’s out taking pictures of batman and robin as a kid he gets kidnapped by black mask and raised to take over his crime empire. cue 50k of manipulation and angst, the ending is so satisfying and the sequel with jason always makes me :’) very good, this tim lives in my mind in a little house he and jason built
Dark Matter by @mysterycyclone because would it be a fic rec without the loml? i love this fic so much oh my god, it sent me back on my spiderman obsessed bullshit which in turn led me back down my marvel bs. post infinity war peter is dusted and wakes up in the DC universe with the ghosts of the dusted avengers following him. i love this fic so much, nothing compares to this peter in my mind. the dynamic between him and the batfam + the identity angst is just so well done
keeping up with the peter theme, The Teenage Vigilante's Guide to Saving New York (And Making Friends Along the Way) by candlesneedflame is such a good team red/mentor matt fic oh my god. where peter goes against tony’s wishes and starts hanging out with daredevil and his friends and maybe starts getting mentored by new york’s vigilantes. 10/10 i love peter interacting with the other vigilantes and also matt mentoring him
anyways, that’s all folks! 2024 was the year for the DC and marvel fics clearly and hopefully 2025 will be the year of me binding all of these finally and having them sitting pretty on my shelf <3

Fanfic Plagiarism alert!
Attention, especially for the people in the following fandoms: Mission: Impossible (specifically Benthan) and Top Gun Maverick.
It brings me no joy to say that we have a big problem in these fandoms - a shameless serial plagiarist who copies other people's fanfics from other fandoms, changes character names and sometimes a few desciptions of the settings or adds a few sentences or paragraphs when they feel generous, and posts them as their own. It is literally Ctrl+C / Ctrl+V type of thing.
My friends and I have reported this person repeatedly on ao3, but we still have not received any response from the staff.
Seeing posts from fellow Benthan fans who are excited about the fact that we are getting close to having 1000 Benthan fics on ao3 makes me sad because of this, because I know quite a few of them are just not legit, and, since ao3 has not responded in months, I guess I have to do a good old public call-out.
This person is known on ao3 by the pen name rosexpetals. If they are reading this, I can only recommend them to delete the stolen works (not just the ones listed in this post, if more are stolen, they can be found later anyway) and take a long look at themselves and reflect on their actions. I wish for them to discover the actual joys of writing something of their own, of expressing their own feelings instead of hijacking other people's.
Below the cut are the links to the works and their sources that I and a couple of friends were able to find using just a simple quick Google search. Out of their 96 published fics, at least 29 are provably stolen (and those are just the ones we were able to find via simple searches), which gives off a strong feeling that none of their work is really original. Some of them were copied from the same source twice. 9 more fics are copies of each other, but in different fandoms (very likely just copied from the same sources). As you will see below, sometimes they didn't even bother to change the title of the original fic they were stealing from or its summary:

Hello, I came to say that dragons are mythical creatures often depicted to be possessive in mythology and literature, sometimes known for their immense power, territorial instincts, and the symbolic association with hoarding wealth and treasures...
Twisted Wonderland in context, Malleus Draconia was confirmed to be a dragon fairy (essentially a dragon who can take a shape of a man), and I was curious if Malleus may have exhibited possessive traits in canon, whether through main story or vignette...?
The reason I ask that is because mischaracterizing characters or making them OOC is the last thing I want to do when it comes to writing or analyzing...
**Sorry if I was not able to word it in a way that you can understand what I'm trying to convey because sometimes I feel inferior that my wording may come off as blunt or insensitive. I just want to leave a brief note that I don't mean to come off as rude or dismissive. I appreciate your understanding!**
In my opinion, Malleus in canon is protective but not possessive. What do I mean by that? Glad you asked. Let's start by laying down some definitions.
In this situation, when I say “protective”, it implies good intentions. It means actively looking out for others' safety and wellbeing. To be possessive, on the other hand, implies a more controlling desire to own or to restrict another's actions. It’s commanding and demanding all of a person’s attention and love. It means having a disrespect for others' autonomy and instead trying to displace it with your will. (Yes, I know that you're probably automatically thinking of The Big Exception of book 7, but I will address that later in this post so hang on for a moment!)
This gets long, so buckle up! We’ve got a lot to talk about.
First thing's first, a lot of the "possessive Malleus" interpretations originate from fandom, especially when it comes to yandere, yume, or generally romantic fan works. (And to be clear: This is NOT to shame the folks who enjoy these kinds of works; I am only listing them here as examples.) Oftentimes this occurs due to individual fans bringing in ideas from media outside the bounds of Twisted Wonderland. This is totally expected and normal; there is no such thing as someone who has an interest in ONLY a singular thing. We will naturally apply our previous knowledge to help us understand and interpret new information.
For example, in irl mythology, fae are hurt by iron--and even in Disney's own films, such as Maleficent, iron is depicted as harming fae and sapping them of their power. This led to many Twst fans headcanoning that iron does the same thing to fae in Twisted Wonderland. However, we learn in book 7 that this is NOT true. Fae, particularly nobles, do find the smell of iron nauseating, but the metal does not appear to impede their powers or hinder them in any way. Lilia and his men are still able to dispatch several Silver Owls (who are dressed in iron arm and battle with iron tanks and other machinery) without issue.
Another example that’s pretty popular is fans believing that whole “if you tell a fairy your name, it grants them power over you” thing. Some have claimed this will come into play in book 7’s final battle. Others claim this is the deeper or secondary reason as to why Malleus doesn’t reveal his own name to Yuu until book 5, as giving his name would grant Yuu power over him. However, there’s nothing in-universe to suggest that names have cultural significance to fae or that any sort of power or status is granted by relinquishing one’s name. Yuu (or Malleus’s hundreds of other classmates) have also demonstrated no such control over him.
Remember: what is true outside of Twst, including in Disney's own works, is NOT necessarily true inside of Twst.
Going back to the initial question, I believe that "Malleus is possessive" is also a headcanon of a similar vein; fans are coming into Twst familiar with other mythos which state that dragons are possessive, territorial, and greedy on top of being powerful. Because Malleus is a dragon fae and is known to possess great power, it's very easy for fans to see the parallels between him and the dragons they already know of. This then leads to them filling in the gaps of his personality and projecting other stereotypical draconic traits onto him. In Malleus's case, this was extremely easy to do because it took a few years for him to see any significant spotlight in both event stories (Glorious Masquerade) and in the main story (book 7).
I think the easiest way for us to analyze whether Malleus is protective or possessive is to examine his closest relationships in the narrative of Twst. I will not be counting Sebek and Silver individually here, as they are both his bodyguards and Malleus maintains a mostly professional relationship with them. Instead, we shall look at Malleus's attitude by looking at his relationships with Lilia and Yuu, then proceed into discussing related behaviors.
I believe it's indisputable that Lilia is one of the most important people to Malleus. Lilia trained him, taught him, and trained him. He is basically Malleus's father figure. The fear of losing Lilia is what causes Malleus to emotionally spiral and take drastic measures in a desperate attempt to avoid that unhappy ending. His entire motivation for unleashing his UM is "not losing [Lilia]!" You would think that if Malleus was going to be possessive of anyone, it would be with Lilia. But the truth of the matter is... he's mostly just... not? Lilia is a very sociable person in the student body. He's frequently gaming with Idia, taking care of or lending wisdom to others (Silver, Sebek, etc.), hanging out with Cater and Kalim in their club, interacting with dorm leaders and freshmen when Malleus is absent for ceremonies, and more--yet Malleus doesn't seem to express any jealousy over sharing Lilia. I'd also like to add that although Malleus lacks parents, he doesn't really show envy over Lilia treating and calling Silver his own son instead of himself. Oh, Malleus certainly does express jealousy to some extent. Who would forget the time in his Dorm Uniform vignettes when he crushed Lilia's phone? The thing is though, the times when Malleus is upset are not fueled by not wanting to share Lilia or wanting to monopolize his time. In the previous example I cited, Malleus broke Lilia's phone because Lilia had received a picture Kalim and the other dorm leaders took after a meeting. Even the dialogue exchanged implies this; Malleus did not automatically get mad when he noticed that Lilia had a notification, he only got mad after realizing he was excluded from something the other dorm leaders were all involved in. Malleus was upset that he was not invited, not that Kalim was texting Lilia. Additionally, it is stated that the dorm leader must grant permission for others to use the lounge. If he wanted to, he could withhold the permission for Lilia, who wants the lounge for his farewell party (which everyone is invited to), or stipulate that he wants a more formal affair with just Diasomnia members present. Malleus doesn’t act in this possessive way though. He grants Lilia what he desires without issue.
Next up for scrutiny is Yuu! Now, there's some gray area here because part of Yuu's relationship with Malleus is defined by how much the player projects onto the self-insert/blank slate character. Please note that, when I discuss Yuu, I am leaving out individual interpretations and going STRICTLY by the information presenting in canon.
It can be said that Malleus slowly develops a fondness for Yuu's company over the course of the main story. At first, he is surprised and maybe even a little disappointed that someone has taken residence in Ramshackle--it used to be desolate, which makes it a perfect spot to visit on his nightly strolls. However, Malleus soon finds amusement in the fact that Yuu, not being of this world, has no clue who he is or what his status is. This grants him the freedom to speak at ease with this human and to "be himself" in a way that he cannot be with others, who typically cower at his name. You could also argue that Yuu telling Malleus they may have found a way home expedited the despair he felt in book 7, as he learned so quickly that two of his friends would be exiting his life soon. This, however, is not possessiveness. It's normal to have fear and anxiety about losing the people you love.
Malleus's voice lines also do not indicate possessiveness. Yes, there's the usual and expected fanservice-y lines where he invites Yuu to come and engage in various activities with him, but nothing in those suggests he would exclude others or become upset if they also wanted to join. (Are you telling me that Malleus wouldn't want to talk for hours on end about the glory of gargoyles to TWO people instead of just one?????) Additionally, all the characters get similar fanservice-y lines, so it's not something exclusive to Malleus. There was one line that gave me pause: "You always seem to attract a crowd... More so than I'd like, really." Buuut I think this could be read a number of ways, not solely in an ‘I want you all to myself’ way. Malleus actually goes like to be alone, hence his nightly strolls. The line can therefore also be read as Malleus enjoying solitude or one-on-one conversations as opposed to addressing a group. In that case, it's a personal preference and not necessarily a sign of possessiveness. He’s definitely not completely averse to group activities though; there are lines where Malleus invites Yuu to do things with him and other characters. For example, from his PE Uniform: “Sebek has been badgering me to help train him. I'll permit you to join us. ... You're coming, I trust?”
The guy generally doesn't get angry or annoyed if Yuu mentions having other friends or managing the 7 member VDC/SDC group. In fact, he sometimes encourages Yuu to interact with others. One of his birthday lines is, "You needn't linger and focus on me to the exclusion of others. I want everyone to enjoy the party, yourself included." Malleus doesn’t so much as flinch or react when a complete stranger kisses the back of Yuu’s hand either. If he was truly possessive, wouldn’t he have gotten angry or—at the very least—have frowned or tried to put some distance between Yuu and said stranger? Yet Malleus doesn’t really react or comment on it despite being present.
Malleus seems to understand that it's not very polite to demand all of someone's time or attention--and this makes perfect sense of his character. He is a royal, and that means he was taught proper manners. Malleus has even indicated before that his grandmother stressed the importance of observing etiquette, particularly around invitations. You don't just invite yourself to functions or insert yourself into others' lives if not extended said invites... and Malleus, for the most part, adheres to those rules. In various voice lines, he even frets over committing social faux pas, wondering if he has offended his peers with certain behaviors. For example, from his Masquerade Dress: "Flamme shoots me stern looks on occasion. Have I behaved improperly in some way...?"
Malleus is also not generally possessive when it comes to his items or territory. He wants to share cake with others; eating a whole one gave him heartburn and now whole cakes are his least favorite food. Additionally, he tends to welcome people to Diasomnia rather than chase them out or expel them. (After all, they so rarely get visitors in the first place.) Malleus will at least hear out the reasoning for seeking him out. As an example, Leona (someone who has had a rocky history with Malleus) goes to Diasomnia in his Ceremonial Robes vignettes to exchange robes after a laundry mix-up. This is a stark contrast to the highly territorial Leona, who attacks a magicless human in thd Botanical Garden and also allows his own students to wail on Yuu and co. for simply walking being in Savanaclaw. Leona joins in on this bullying too. I think it's pretty clear that Malleus handles guests with far more tact, grace, and patience than his fellow prince.
I want to point out that though Malleus is usually amicable with guests, there are exceptions. Ramshackle, as I mentioned earlier, is a place he enjoys a lot. He indicates in his Halloween Dress card that “If anyone dares to damage [this] dorm, I will be as a lóng and reduce them to cinders. I have become rather fond of that place, after all.” Indeed, he does act on this promise in Terror is Trending and comes close to striking down Magicam Monsters for disrespecting a place he holds so dear. Is this possessive though? Yes, it’s a place he loves—but it’s also a place where his friend Yuu lives.
There are many other examples of Malleus going to extreme lengths to protect the things he loves. He vows to destroy Rollo Flamme, who poses a threat to his people, the fae (who depend on magic as their way of life, and the sentient gargoyles, whom he has recently befriended. He unleashes his mighty magic to attack those who wound his pride. He stops time and kidnaps the entire student body all for the sake of including ghosts in a Halloween celebration. And, of course, he sends Sage’s Island to sleep in a desperate bid to stop losing everyone. The majority of these behaviors involve him lashing out at those who pose legitimate threats to things he cares about. It’s not as though be is acting for no discernible reason or because he is doesn’t want his loved ones being with people other than him. Does that make these actions right? No, absolutely not. But I would say they are definitely more protective than possessive.
Very rarely is Malleus actively preventing his peers from spending time away from him. Sure, he gets upset that he’s not invited to join them and sure, he wishes people would invite him too—but there’s a difference between longing and being mopey about this and acting so domineering he’s breathing down the necks of others to only be with him. He is not stopping people from being with their friends and family. He is not stopping people from using his things or entering his territory. Even when he makes everyone sleep, he grants them the space to craft their own dreams and doesn’t even make the dreams center around him and his own involvement on their lives. Oftentimes the dreams involve several other characters that are important to the individual dreamer and Malleus does not appear at all. (Again, this doesn’t mean using his UM was the best move to resolve his issues; I’m just saying his actions were not necessarily possessive.)
So, in conclusion, I stand by the thesis at I proposed at the start of this post: Malleus is largely protective, not possessive, despite what many fandom interpretations would have you believe.

The Art of Not Saying "I Love You" pt 2
Master List
Characters: Soldier Boy, Ben x Reader, other characters from The Boys
Warnings: Angst, language, SMUT! (all sorts of fun, unprotected sex-cover it up people), violence
A/N: This chapter starts breaking down the enemy part of our reader and Ben. Also, Tom is a dick 😂 Not sure if I’m going to write another chapter after this. I might have one more for this one.
I do not own the rights to the characters in this story. This does not follow The Boys timeline, and is a work of fiction.
All work is my own, please don’t take it or use it without permission. Reblogs and Likes are always welcome.

I ordered room service but couldn’t eat anything. My stomach was in knots. Ben’s words echoed in my head, “He was with his wife. They have a 5 year old son and she’s pregnant.”
I felt sick. I’d been dating, and sleeping with a married man. Now I understood why he never stayed and why he’d never let me go to his place.
I felt so stupid and used. Now Ben knew and I’m sure he was just loving this. I ran my fingers through my hair and let out a shaky breath.
Turning on my phone I called Tom. I had no idea what I was going to say.
“Hey, Y/N. Are you okay? Butcher and Annie are looking for you. I’ve tried to call a million times.” Tom’s voice made my stomach turn as soon as I heard it.
My heart pounded, “Is it true?” Was all I could manage to get out.
“Yes, baby. We’ve all been worried sick.” I scoffed, “I’m not talking about that. I’m talking about your wife and son, and let’s not forget your unborn child.”
The line was silent. “Ben told you, didn’t he? Stupid bastard. I told him I’d tell you.”
“Oh no! Don’t you fucking blame him for this. You’re the fucking liar who cheated on his PREGNANT wife with me!”
“Baby, I swear I can explain.” “Ha! There’s nothing to explain. You’re married with kids and lied to me. That seems pretty cut and dry to me.”
“It’s not that simple. Vicky and I were having problems and I met you at the bar. Things happened and I fell in love with you.”
“No, Tom. You don’t know what love is. This, what we had isn’t love. It’s wrong and it’s over. Lose my number and don’t contact me again.”
“Baby please don’t do this.” He pleaded.
“I’m not your baby, Tom.”
“Fine, go ahead and throw this away. Go fuck Soldier Boy. I know you’re dying to. It’s obvious he wants my sloppy seconds.”
“You know what Tom, I might just do that. I bet he can actually give me an orgasm!”
“Fuck you! You know nobody is going to love you like I did. You’re damaged, fat and pathetic, you know that.”
“Okay, Tom. I’d rather be damaged than a fucking cheater. Enjoy what’s left of your marriage.”
I hung up and could feel the anger rise in me. I tried to call Annie and Butcher but they didn’t answer.
I took a deep breath and called Ben. “Hey doll face. Are you okay?”
“Not really, but I will be. Ben, I’m so sorry I didn’t believe you.”
“Hey, where are you?” I bit my lip. I knew what would happen if I told him. He’d come to me. Part of me wanted it, but another part was still so angry at him.
“I’m at the Park Avenue hotel, room 233.” “I’m on my way, sweetheart.” “Okay” I whispered.
My heart fluttered in my chest at the sound of him calling me “sweetheart”. I liked it a little too much.
A few minutes later there was a pounding on the door. Swinging the door open I saw Ben. He looked so tired but relieved.
He grabbed my shoulders and pushed me into the room, kicking the door shut with his foot.
His lips were on mine in an instant. I moaned into his mouth. He started kissing down my neck, “Tell me to stop and I’ll stop.”
I didn’t say anything. I wanted him to keep going.
“You have to tell me to stop, because once we cross this line we aren’t going back.”
“Ben, don’t stop, please. I need you.”
His hand found the hem of my shirt, lifted it up and pulled it over my head.
His lips back on my body as his kisses left a tail of fire on my skin.
“You’re so fucking beautiful.” His hands slid to my back and unhooked my bra. My breasts sprang free from the confines of the material and Ben licked and sucked each nipple.
My skin, my body was on fire. He gently laid me back on the bed and removed his shirt. I bit my lip and clenched my thighs together at the sight before me.
He climbed on the bed, legs between my thighs and he hovered over my body. His hands trailing down my body to the waistband of my pants. His green eyes, dark with lust, looked at me and I nodded. Hooking his fingers in my pants he pulled them off. Leaving me in nothing but my panties.
He stood, and removed his pants and his boxers. I licked my lips when I saw his long, thick cock spring out of his boxers. “Fuck” I whispered.
He smirked, “Like what you see sweetheart?” I nodded, “Yes, I need to taste you.”
He raised his eyebrows, “Are you sure you can handle it?” I nodded eagerly. I leaned up, took his length in my hand and guided the pink, swollen tip to my mouth.
I licked every inch of him from the tip, down the veiny shaft and to the base. Pulling moans from Ben’s lips. I licked back up his shaft and opened my, taking every inch in.
Ben’s hands went into my hair, gripping and pushing his hips further into me. His cock so long it gagged me a bit, but I was able to adjust to his size.
As I pulled back, my tongue swirled around his shaft. “Fuck sweetheart, that feels incredible.” He moaned as he pushed my head back down.
I hummed with him in my mouth and he groaned, loudly.
The pornographic sounds filling the room were soaking my panties. The wet sound of me sucking him and the grunts and groans falling from his lips were absolutely sinful in the best way.
His hips slammed his cock deeper in my throat. “Fuck!” He pulled me off, “Sorry sweetheart I was about to cum down that pretty little throat of yours and I’m not done with you yet.”
I wiped the saliva and precum from my lips and Ben kissed me, deeply. He helped me lay back on the bed and he spread my legs. He smirked, “Damn baby, your panties are soaked. All this from sucking me.” He hooked my panties in his fingers and pulled them off.
Taking his thick, calloused fingers he slid them in between my folds, pulling a moan from my lips.
“You’re so fucking wet, darlin’. You’re ready for me aren’t you?” I nodded. My body ached for him.
His large hands parted my thighs as he slid down. “I need to taste you, make you cum on my face before I give you a proper fucking.”
I bit my lip. His tongue and fingers went to work on my pussy. His tongue swirled, sucked and lapped at my swollen clit as his fingers pushed in and out of my pussy.
My hips arched off the bed with each thrust and lick. I was overstimulated but not stimulated enough. My mind was a mess and I was starting to understand why all those women looked so fucked out when he finished with them.
Ben was a sex god, and right now he was mine. “Mmm, look at you. So flushed and ready to cum. You want to cum, baby?” I babbled something incoherent and nodded. He smirked, “Cum then.”
My body responded to his demand. I screamed his name and arched my body off the bed. It felt like I was floating. I had never cum like this before. It was amazing and I wanted it again.
Ben kept working my bundle of nerves again. My legs were trying to close, but he pushed them open. “I’m not done with you yet. I know you have another one there. Cum for me baby girl.”
Without warning I was coming again. My body was overstimulated and I was breathing hard. “Ben, please. I need you.”
Ben leaned up, kissed my lips softly and nodded. He pumped himself a few times and lined up with my dripping wet entrance.
He slowly pushed in. I grabbed the sheets and then his shoulders. “Relax baby.” He whispered in my ear. Kissing my lips as he slowly pushed every inch of himself in me. His thick cock stretched me in the most delicious way.
Ben rested his head in the crook of my neck, “Damn you feel incredible, so tight.” Ben leaned up and slowly pulled himself out of me. I could feel every inch moving in and out.
It was the most incredible feeling I’d ever felt. My hands gripped his shoulders with each thrust. I’d secretly imagined how this would feel, but nothing prepared me for this.
I’d heard Ben when he was with other women. He was always fast and hard, satisfying both him and her, but this was different. He wasn’t in a hurry. Ben was savoring every second we spent together.
Ben changed position a little bit, he was on his knees and took my legs, throwing them over his shoulders and his hips slammed into mine.
“Look at you, so fucked out, so beautiful and mine.” I bit my lip, “Yes, Ben. Yours.”
That spurred him on because he slammed into me. His grunts and thrusts louder, faster. “I want to coat your pretty insides with my hot seed. Fuck a baby into you.” His words took me by surprise, Ben was always so careful when he had sex. Otherwise he’d have hundreds of kids running around.
Just as his words hit me I felt it. His release inside me, coating my walls. His thrusts ragged as he emptied himself in me.
I felt his cock stop twitching and he slid out of me. Some of his cum spilled on the sheets. Ben walked to the bathroom, grabbed a washcloth and came back to clean us both up.
This took me by complete surprise. I never would have thought the infamous Soldier Boy was into aftercare. Once I was clean and so was he, Ben pulled me into his arms.
Placing a soft kiss on my forehead, “Damn that was better than I imagined.” My heart thumped in my chest. I nodded, “Yeah, that was incredible, Ben.”
He lifted my chin and kissed my lips. We laid in silence for a while, then Ben spoke first.
“Y/N, I’m sorry I couldn’t protect you from Tom.” I looked confused, “Ben, it wasn’t your fault. You and I just met. How could you have known Tom was married?” “I knew something was off when he refused to stay with you and you’d never been at his place. I should have said something.”
I placed my hand on his chest, “Ben, honestly I don’t think I would have believed you. You told me when you found out, so that’s what matters.” “I should have snapped his neck when I saw him.” I shook my head, “No, Ben. His wife was there and you would have gone to jail. He’s not worth it.”
I laid in his arms and thought about the conversation Tom and I had on the phone. “I did confront him, you know.” Ben looked down at me, “I’m glad.”
I told Ben what Tom said about Ben taking his sloppy seconds, then I told him what he said about me. Ben was pissed, “What a fucking pussy. If I see him again I’m going to kick his ass.”
“Ben, he’s not worth it.” “He might not be, but you sure as hell are.” My heart fluttered in my chest.
Shit! Don’t do it. Don’t fall for him. He doesn’t have long relationships. You’ll only end up hurt and alone.
A few hours later I woke up alone. My heart sank. I rolled over and could still smell him on the pillow he was laying on.
Looking over I saw a note. My heart beat wildly in my chest as I took it in hand.
Y/N,
Come home.
-B
“Home” A smile spread across my face. I grabbed my stuff and started to head back to the apartment. Maybe he could have a relationship with me.
Ben’s POV
I look down and see her sleeping peacefully in my arms. God she’s so beautiful. How could anyone ever hurt her?
Brushing the hair out of her face I placed a soft kiss on her lips. I slid out of bed and wrote her a note telling her to come home.
Pulling on my clothes I left as quietly as I could. Walking out in the cool air I could still smell her perfume and shampoo on me. Then I saw him. Walking down the sidewalk all smug.
What he did to her, said to her played in my head and an anger rose in me. I could feel my chest burning hot, glowing. I tried to breathe to calm down, but seeing him holding hands with another woman just set me off.
Before I knew what I was doing I walked up to him, grabbed him by his throat and pinned him to the wall.
The woman with him screamed. “You stupid son of a bitch! You have another one?!” The woman begged me to let him go, I turned and looked at her, “Doll I’d leave this one alone. He’s married and has two kids.” She looked at Tom and gasped. She walked away.
“Now where was I?! How dare you call her damaged, fat, and pathetic!” I punched him in the face. He yelped in pain. A crowd gathered around us, a smirk tugging at my face.
“Please, stop. I’m sorry.” Tom begged. Y/N’s face, tears and pain played in my head. I just kept punching him.
“Ben! Stop!” A deep voice came from behind me. I turned, it was Butcher. “Do you know what this son of a bitch did, Butcher? What he did to Y/N?!” He placed a hand on my shoulder, “Yes, Ben I know, but this isn’t going to solve anything.”
I released Tom and he fell to the ground. “You better bet glad he showed up.” Tom stood up and scampered off.
Reader’s POV
Walking back into the apartment was strange. There was a heaviness to the air, a tension between Butcher and Ben. “Hey sweet pea.” Butcher said as he pulled me into a hug. “Hey.” I looked over at Ben, he couldn’t look at me. A pang of sadness stabbed my heart. “Welcome home, Y/N. Glad you came to your senses.” “Butcher, this is temporary until I can find a permanent place.”
That’s when I noticed Ben’s jaw tighten and his eyes met mine. “Hey doll face. Glad you’re back.” I smiled and nodded, “Ben.” As he stood I noticed his hand.
“Oh my god, Ben. What happened to your hand?” He looked at it and chuckled, “Eh, it connected with some pussy’s face.” “Why don’t you tell her who’s face, Ben.” I looked at Butcher and then back at Ben.
“Drop it, Butcher!” Ben growled. “No, Ben, tell me who, please.” I stepped closer and put a hand on his chest.
“Tom. He was out with another woman. Fucker hadn’t learned, plus he had to pay for what he did, said to you.”
I didn’t know if I should be pissed or flattered he beat Tom up. “Oh Ben.” I leaned up and kissed his lips. He pulled me close and deepened the kiss.
Butcher stood with his mouth on the floor.
“I had to defend my girl. Besides, he had it coming. A real man doesn’t cheat on his wife.” I smiled, “What about his girlfriend?” “That too.” He smirked and pulled me close. “Now, let’s get you settled back in.”
He took me by my hand and led me to the bedroom, shutting the door and helping me settle back in.

GL odds and ends 29 December 2024
The end of the year kicked my ass, but I wanted to get one last one of these out for 2024! The last one before this was 10 November. If you're interested in GL older than that, check out my GL rec list through Feb 2024 and my #gl recs tag for the other odds and ends posts. New series marked with an asterisk*.
Currently airing (with thoughts up to 29 Dec):
The Fragrance You inherit 5/8 (Japanese, Friday/Saturday-ish, no official distribution but fansub on @isaksbestpillow's blog [thank you Siiri!] I have been really enjoying this show and have been writing when I have time (last post was for ep4). At its core this is a gentle show about kind people who love each other doing their best, which is always my favourite thing. Subs are on pause for the moment so you have time to catch up before the finale!
Pluto ep 11/12 (Thai, Saturdays 9:30 AM ET, YouTube) This plot continues to be absolutely wild. There's a lot of discourse around Oom this week, to which I'll just say: Setting a test to see if the people you love will hurt themselves in order to make you feel better is not loving or healthy behaviour, even if your motivations are understandable and sympathetic. Namtan is doing a great job making these twins feel like different people, and she and Film are still gorgeous together. And I have no idea what's up with the messy lesbian sides, but I'm on the side of all of them need a time out! I've been pretty dialed out of this show because it's not my thing, so I'm not that invested in any of the relationships going into the finale, but it's been a wild ride and it seems to be holding together for those who enjoy the high drama of this plot.
*Petrichor ep 5/10 (Thai, Saturdays, 10:00 AM ET, iQIYI) The procedural aspects of this show are unfortunately not well executed, but Engfa and Charlotte have fantastic chemistry. I'm also really loving seeing Na and Max again even though I am very worried about getting too attached to their characters. It's always hard for me when a show is about a police officer trying to do good work in a corrupt system because the only takeaway I can accept is that that is not possible lol but I'm enjoying seeing these two on my screen every week (except this week, because we sadly did not get a new episode today).
*Mate, 6/12 (Thai, Tuesdays, WeTV (uncut version)) This one is hard to describe. It seems to be trying to do for trauma in a GL what Love in the Air and Bed Friend did in BL--show a realistic depiction of trauma in one of their characters and have them fall in love, and be taken care of and healed that way. But that also makes it extremely hard to watch. The trauma flashbacks and trauma responses is rough. The main character is not very likeable but that's kinda the point, I'm not minding that part of it so much. There are a lot of things I like about this show, so I don't want to discourage views. Just go into this one informed, and make the decision that's right for you.
*INTP 1/? (Korean, Fridays (?), YouTube) This is the latest short series from RedQ, who produced some of my favourite GL short series including More than or equal to 75 degrees C, and To the Ex who Hated Me. No info on how long it will be or if it will be weekly, so that Fridays release schedule is a total guess. The setup of this one reminded me of Semantic Error if SangWoo realized he was attracted to JaeYoung at their first group assignment meeting.
Recently Completed:
Apple My Love 6.5 50-min eps (Thai, Oct 12-Nov 16, GagaOOLala and YouTube) I ended up feeling like this one bit off a bit more than it could chew, as much fun as I had with it, it was a wobbly landing. I was ok with the ending at the end but I spent a lot of time watching the finale uncertain about how I felt about all of it. There's a 30 min "episode 5.1" that is an important bridge between episodes 5 and 6 (and also includes a 10-min fingering scene, thank you show) that I think resulted from either poor pacing or realizing they needed to set up the episode better? It was odd but something to make sure not to skip. The show does a lot of what I love about Kongthup's latest BLs: it avoids the worst drama pitfalls and calls them out in the show itself when it uses them, and it is largely about being kind to its characters who are figuring themselves out. Warning for extremely hard to watch secondhand embarrassment in the first couple of episodes lol Kris is such a cringefail lesbian I love her. With the caveats above, if you don't mind secondhand embarrassment and want a comedy GL and are willing to be a little patient with the ending, give this one a try!
The Loyal Pin 16 65-min eps (Thai, Aug 4-Dec 1, YouTube) Anin was the bravest right through to the end. I really liked a lot of this show, but I found the pacing a bit uneven and the finale a little rough. It's hard, because I actually am happy with the way the show ended--it makes perfect sense and was where I was hoping they would get to the entire show. What I didn't like was how we got there. It seemed wild that Pin and Anin didn't at least talk about this possibility before we got there; and didn't feel like we ever resolved the disparity between the two leads, though the show was aware of it the whole time which I did like. And you may have seen the shouting about the prank in the finale, it was in really poor taste. In the end, this show was beautiful, gave a platform for promoting Thai culture (food, clothing, history), and had excellent intimacy. I really enjoyed the slow burn between Anin and Pin, and I loved that every character had and used the agency they had, but that the show was realistic about what was in and outside of their control. If you want a slow-burn and high-heat romance and are willing to be a little frustrated for the sake of the drama, and/or you really like a pigtail-pulling romantic dynamic, you should watch this show.
Red Whisper 8 10-min eps (Korea, Oct 2-Nov 11, YouTube) Honestly this show never got better after what I wrote about it a month ago about how its portrayal of bisexuality and nonmonogamy was upsetting. For the record one last time: Not all bisexuals are nonmonogamous, and entering a monogamous relationship under false pretenses and then acting like your partner is being unreasonable by not wanting an open relationship is shitty behaviour. This one is sadly not recommended.
The Nipple Talk 10 30-min eps (Taiwanese, Nov 8-22, GagaOOLala) I highly recommended the first half, and so I am so sad to say that I can't say the same for the second half of the show. I was really enjoying how much the show seemed to support a mix of monogamy and nonmonogamy, but the second half of the show leaned heavily into 'everyone wants a monogamous relationship when they meet the right person', which disappointed me. The show also tried to introduce some themes that felt very dated in terms of how they handled them (e.g. HIV) and I ended up just not really liking the Pony character as a person by the end. The lesbian relationship was super messy in a way that I did not find fun too. Mama was the best part of this show, and I hope we get more characters like them in future (better) shows!
*Soul Sisters 24 12-min eps (Chinese, iQIYI) This entire show dropped this week so I binged it in one go. The basic setup is a GL version of Meet You At the Blossom, except the gender fuckery lasts for most of the series and they don't actually ever get to kiss. I loved this little show; it is a frenetic, very silly and censored comedy, so calibrate your expectations accordingly. But it walks the line in a way that is palatable (or was for me, anyway). Without giving too much away, it is an open happy ending. The caveats for this one are that there is no wasted tape, so the pacing is rollercoaster fast, and the cuts are sometimes jarring. But it's a surprisingly beautiful show for the budget, and I really appreciated all of the ways they came up with to give these women shippy moments. Also, good lord this main character is so competent, which is a major weakness of mine. I had a great time!
*Whisper Me a Love Song 12 25-min eps (Japanese anime, Apr-27 Dec, HiDive) This started airing in April but there was a delay and the last episode didn't air until yesterday. High school lesbians in a band having embarrassing confused and misunderstood feelings all over the place (with good endings including a kiss for at least one of our couples). I appreciate that this anime is not playing with the 'are they friends who joke about wanting to touch each other's boobs or are they more' line, they outright say they want to be more than friends and then kiss. The music is good too! Recommended if you are feeling like a high school dramedy with good tunes that stays pretty light and is in the 'bubble'.
Recent One-offs, Side Couples, etc.:
My Hot Butch Roommate (actually a 2-parter) aired on bilibili 1, 2) and was subtitled by @douqi7s on YouTube (1, 2) These two are very cute, and this little short does a ton with the very tiny 5 minutes of total runtime it uses. Give the original bilibili uploads a stream so they get views, even if you watch the YT subbed version!
Fufuknows put out a new lesbian short titled The Choices of Two Lesbian Couples in Love on YouTube This was a great short (11 min) film featuring the story of two couples at different stages in their relationship, and the different choices they make about their futures. I really enjoy Fufuknows as queer short filmmakers, and I appreciate that they regularly include lesbian and wlw content in their bi-weekly (as in, every other week) fictional shorts that they produce and release. This one is recommended!
Aim's Lesbian plotline in the new Love Sick 2024 remake concluded (this was not a plotline in the 2014 version and it's one of the changes I really like and that I think works really well) Spoiler: she doesn't get a romance happy ending but her story ends with acceptance from her friends about who she is, which was lovely to watch
There was a brief of-the-week lesbian couple who wanted to marry in Spare Me Your Mercy Spoiler: their story is tragic, which is par for the course in a murder mystery
I am suspecting wlw sides in See Your Love I may end up eating these words but I was getting vibes, and so I'm putting this out in the universe now in hopes I'm right lol
There is a new Korean shorts production company on YouTube called Lovememory (Their first BL ep is out and the GL, First Love, has a trailer)
Mom Ped Sawan started airing but I don't have a source so I can't give any info or links unfortunately. If anyone knows of a subtitled source for this show, please let me know!
My Ex's Wedding came out in Thai theatres waiting for an international source for this too
Korean short film What's In my Bag was uploaded to Matchbox I haven't seen it yet but the trailer is on YouTube if anyone is curious! The film is available now for a small fee on Vimeo (runtime 12 mins).
Sastra film app YouTube channel has several short Cambodian GL series that come out weekly Honestly they are not to my taste but I don't like gatekeeping GL especially from smaller markets. I check in on these time to time and if there are any that I think are great I'll give them a shout-out
Ditto above with JPC media YouTube channel for Thai GL shorts if there are any that stand out to me I'll say so; that being said I haven't had time recently so if I've missed anything good let me know!
Starting soon:
Us the series, Thai, 18 January 2025, most likely YouTube (as this is a GMMTV show) Caveat that this date is a rumour, see comments
Fragrance of the First Flower s2, Taiwanese, 18 February 2025, GagaOOLala ok this isn't that soon but I'm just so excited we're getting this second season after all!
It is so, so nice that we have this much GL to keep track of, I can't complain! This covers a whole month of content and it was a month I was very distracted from my QL consumption so while I always welcome anyone pointing out stuff I missed, I would particularly appreciate it this round.

Ranking 2024 anime, Pt. 2: #40-31
hey, this post is also available on my ko-fi, so please check it out and consider tipping/donating as i do this for free and am currently between jobs. you can find part 1 of the list here. thanks!
Alright, on we go to the list proper. The first post was probably whiplash-inducing, going from a bunch of shorter stuff I loved to whole seasons I hated, but we can only go up from here. I watched a lot of anime this year, as the numbers indicate, so there's a little positivity to be found even in the lower rankings.
As always, OPs are linked in the series titles. Watch them, they're almost all great.
40. Metallic Rouge
One of the biggest disappointments of the year, one which I didn’t think could be outdone (and I’ll get to that one shortly). Metallic Rouge had so much going for it as a Studio Bones original for its anniversary, and managed to fumble all of its promise and goodwill in slow, agonizing fashion.
It’s a shame, too. Metallic Rouge still looks awesome; the character and mech designs are excellent, the space-cyberpunk aesthetic is undeniable, and the animation can be terrific when it counts. The story, on the other hand, is so completely asinine that I was sick of this show before it ended. I’ve mostly forgotten what even happens, partly because it was that infuriating to keep up with, and partly because I feel like the writers forgot too; the bulk of any actual story felt backloaded into the last two or three episodes because they focused too hard on vibes for a while. I think they were trying to go for some “G-Witch by way of Detroit: Become Human” something or other, but all of it rang hollow. I’m still not sure whether it needed more runtime or better writers. Probably both.
Not worth your time. Just watch the OP and imagine a better show than what we got.
39. Mysterious Disappearances
I’ve thought so little about this show since it went off the air that I don’t really have anything new to say. Looks pretty lousy most of the time, not that interesting, oddly horny, and the plot structure gets kind of cloying after a while.
I know I harped on that last point when I reviewed it at the end of the spring season, but something funny happened after I did. Back in July, I mentioned that I took issue with the formula of “we encounter a paranormal anomaly, it’s identified as a yokai or urban legend, we learn its tragic backstory, our protagonists give it closure, and we move on” because it felt manipulative after I realized that it happened with every arc, and then I went ahead and read DanDaDan, which basically does exactly the same thing but a hell of a lot better. Comparing a middling work like this to DanDaDan of all things feels unfair, but they cover pretty similar ground. Maybe it’s sharper writing, or maybe it’s just a more engaging work. Who’s to say?
I’d also said in my review that Mysterious Disappearances unintentionally gives off the vibe of a poorly-archived mid-2000s series, but I hadn’t realized just how right I was: It turns out that studio Zero-G just went ahead and made up its own ending even though the source material is still ongoing. Better shows did the same this year, but the studio and I seem to have the same level of faith that this anime’s ever coming back.
38. My Deer Friend Nokotan
Honestly? Fuck this show.
I’ve already gone into what I did and didn’t like about Nokotan after it went off air a few months ago and I don’t care to revisit that while it’s still relatively fresh. Not nearly as funny as it pretended to be, yet still not even confident in its own sense of humor. The OP's still a bop (calling it "Shikairo Days" was a genuinely great joke), and a small handful of gags do land, but not enough to prevent this from being a massive disappointment. At the same time, Nokotan was still somehow not the biggest letdown of the year.
37. Uzumaki
This was the biggest letdown of the year.
When an anime adaptation of the legendary Junji Ito horror manga was first announced in 2019, it was hard not to get excited. Even when I’d mostly fallen out of anime fandom, I knew damn well who Junji Ito was and I knew Uzumaki. Adult Swim was funding the project, a prestige studio in Production I.G. was handling the animation, and they even nabbed Hereditary composer Colin Stetson for the score. Ito’s manga is famously very difficult to adapt well, and it looked like we finally had a project being taken seriously. Delays and radio silence in the ensuing years were disappointing, but I was willing to be patient if it meant everything was being handled right. When the trailer dropped this summer, it looked like it would be worth the wait.
And for one glorious episode, it seemed like everyone’s patience paid off. Uzumaki’s debut episode was one of the most visually arresting pieces of animation I’ve ever seen: The entire look and feel was faithful to Ito’s inimitable style, from the meticulously detailed linework to the stark black-and-white color grading of his manga’s pages. On top of that, the animation itself was absurdly good; the process of rotoscoping 3D motion capture seemed arduous, but the end result was beautifully lifelike for a story where that quality could only serve to instill further terror. Several of the most iconic images from the early chapters looked incredible in hi-def motion. Sure, the pacing was a little fast, but this was a four-episode miniseries. We could deal. This was just too good.
And then came the second episode.
I’m not going to over-elaborate or relitigate every single thing that went wrong here, because it’s a lot. Uzumaki was in development for a long time, and that five year gap between announcement and release included several detriments to the production process, not the least of which being COVID, animation production changing hands between several studios, and new leadership for Adult Swim’s parent company that now favors profit over product, especially when it comes to animation that doesn’t involve DC characters. Plenty of us figured that all of these delays and a run of only four episodes meant that they had the time to hammer out all the issues and give us the best possible product. That, unfortunately, was not the case.
Responding to complaints about the decline in animation in the second episode, executive producer Jason DeMarco (who, to be blunt, has overseen several mediocre-to-awful anime products released under the Adult Swim brand, including my bottom-ranked anime of 2023) claimed in a quickly-deleted Bluesky thread that there is indeed a higher-up to blame and that they were left with an ultimatum to either drop Uzumaki after just one episode, let it go the way of so many other Warner Bros non-releases under David Zaslav’s disastrous leadership, or release the whole miniseries in its half-baked state. They went with the third.
So, what we got was an uneven, often sloppy work; another mediocrity to throw on the pile of failed Junji Ito adaptations. All goodwill established in the first episode is soon undone by wonky character models, uncanny walk cycles, and movement that looks like PNGs being dragged across a background at the most inopportune times. Plenty of viewers, myself included, were willing to overlook the accelerated pacing after the first episode, but that issue was thrown into stark relief by the second when entire chapters of the manga began playing out simultaneously, and one was even reduced to an afterthought for a cheap “scare” at the end of episode three.
Not that I thought Uzumaki necessarily needed a full 12-episode season for a proper adaptation or anything; Ito’s output can often be light on story, and dragging it out too far risks losing interest. What makes Ito’s stories actually work, though, is a proper sense of setting and space to let tensions rise. That didn’t entirely happen here; while the atmosphere of Kurozu-cho does plenty resemble what we’ve seen from Ito’s pages, and Stetson’s atonal saxophone does a lot of work to raise the level of unease, things just kind of happen. Few things really get the chance to land as intended, in part due to the production quality cheaping out at climactic moments.
This was the last anime I finished this year even though I’d watched the first two episodes after they aired and it went off the air in October. I was looking forward to the last two episodes that little. There are still bits and pieces of great animation and faithful adaptation here and there, but not enough to regain any goodwill from the second episode’s wheels visibly falling off. Maybe it’s finally time to declare Junji Ito’s works unadaptable once and for all.
Definitely watch that first episode, though. At this point I kind of wish that’s all we’d gotten.
36. Hokkaido Gals Are Super Adorable!
Straitlaced Nice Guy moves to a new town, laid-back gyaru from his class immediately takes a liking to him, a couple other girls enter the picture, shenanigans ensue, and a slow-burn romance begins in parallel. Nothing special on paper and nothing much more special than that in execution. The setting is lovely, though, and it really made me want to visit Hokkaido one day. Nicely done, tourism board.
If you watched this and were put off by it, I don’t blame you; I probably would’ve been too if I hadn’t decided to read ahead in the manga. I will say this, though: If you liked Hokkaido Gals even a little, read the manga. It’s a minor investment, but if you can get over the halfway mark, it gets surprisingly good and has a really lovely ending.
The anime, on the other hand? Meh. Doesn’t look super great and didn’t have enough time in 12 episodes to overcome most of the issues the source material had to move past to get to what made it worthwhile. It would take another season or two to get there, and that probably isn’t gonna happen. Great OP, though (I'm starting to repeat myself, I know). Just read the manga.
35. No Longer Allowed in Another World
Boasting one of the most audacious premises for an isekai I’ve ever seen, No Longer Allowed in Another World doesn’t shy away from the implications of an Osamu Dazai isekai, has the dark humor to match, and provides some fascinating commentary on the type of person who tends to consume wish-fulfillment isekai. Unfortunately, the presentation was a little lacking and threatened to lose my attention several times. I think the idea is much better on paper, to the point where I might test that theory and go read the manga.
34. The Wrong Way to Use Healing Magic
The next dozen or so anime in the rankings fall into a category of either “well-made anime that I found kind of frustrating” or “middling anime that I kind of enjoyed.” The Wrong Way to Use Healing Magic is very much the latter. It’s a standard isekai on paper; demon king, special powers, what have you, but it has a likable cast and laid-back vibe for much of its runtime that made is pleasant enough to watch.
As I said after the winter season, I really liked that Wrong Way spends a lot of its early story ensuring that the protagonist expends the time and effort necessary for him to become the hero he’s meant to be instead of the narrative just handing it to him from the start, which instantly sets it apart from most other wish-fulfillment isekai. It’s far from the best-looking anime I watched this year, but it has a mid-00s throwback look and feel to it that works more to its benefit than in Mysterious Disappearances. Nothing groundbreaking and a little too backloaded, but an enjoyable enough experience and one I’m looking forward to seeing come back.
The only really upsetting thing about this show is that Atsuko Tanaka (Major Kusanagi, Bayonetta, Kainé), who was tremendous as the intimidating Captain Rose, is no longer with us. She was an exceptional talent with an iconic voice who will be sorely missed, and future seasons of this show won’t be the same without her.
33. Go! Go! Loser Ranger
Though not a bad anime by most metrics, I still consider Loser Ranger a minor disappointment. It mostly looks great, and “what if The Boys was a sentai series” is a killer premise, but the story so far is extremely frontloaded. Almost too much happens in the first four episodes, and then the bulk of the last arc of the season takes place in a goddamn parking garage. I’m still annoyed by that. Still looking forward to season 2, but I wish the debut season had been 24 episodes to avoid the sour taste in my mouth.
Did you hear that echo? Yep, that's me telling you to watch yet another OP. Easily the best part of the show and one of the best of the year. Tatsuya Kitani can't keep getting away with it.
32. Astro Note
2024 turned out to be a banner year for Rumiko Takahashi’s older works making their way back to modern screens, and one of those entries wasn’t even hers.
Astro Note is an overt homage to Takahashi’s less-famous romcom Maison Ikkoku, which ran parallel to Urusei Yatsura for most of the latter’s run. Like Ikkoku, Astro Note follows a down-on-his-luck young man living in a boarding house full of bizarre miscreants who only stays because the manager is super pretty. Unlike Ikkoku, and unbeknownst to our protagonist, said manager is actually an alien who is practically turning the house over to find a secret alien MacGuffin.
This show looks lovely and has a delightful cast and some surprisingly moving subplots, but it’s nothing too special otherwise. There are some fun creative flourishes here and there, like the alien stuff shown in flashback being made to look like an older space opera anime, but aside from a very fun turn near the end of the season, Astro Note rarely rises above the level of simply “pleasant.” And that’s fine, but it doesn’t quite live up to the material it’s aping, and what we’ve ended up with is just a nice distraction.
I’m so glad I finally decided to read Maison Ikkoku though.
31. Shangri-La Frontier, second cour
It’s been a running joke for me that the more I watch Shangri-La Frontier, the less I’m sure whether I like it or not, and now with 25 episodes in the tank, I’m less sure than ever. The back half of the debut season improved on a few of the things that annoyed me about its first cour by focusing more on the high-quality action and introducing minor stakes to the proceedings, and then everything else surrounding it made it feel no less like I’m just watching a guy playing a goddamn video game, and the stakes still mostly seem to amount to "he wants to be good at it."
You may notice that I didn’t include the second season in this review, and that’s because I flat-out didn’t care to pick it back up. I’d been busy during the fall season and continuing a show I didn’t enjoy that much just wasn’t a high priority. It’s continuing into January, so there’s time to catch it while it airs, but I’m still not in any hurry.

Thanks for thinking of me! . . I should really do this before 2024 is up, right? 😂
BTW its still Dec 31 here where I am, so I'll say it counts.
I've done a lot more than I expected this year, as I look back. And I'm kind of proud of myself.
I started writing for another fandom - RWRB. Its been fun adding these characters to the mix.
I managed finishing 1 multi-chapter fic and a 11 shorter fics.
I'm still plugging away on 3 longer multi-chapter WIP, adding and posting chapters as I go.
I have compiled an additional WIP list of (*stops to count*) 16 other fics that are not posted yet, but are in various stages of readiness. I flitter around adding bits to each when inpiration hits.
I think that's about it for me for 2024 - still writing, slow and steady. 😊
I'm always so happy to see any of kudos and comments if you have left any . . . and I'm still really apologetic that I haven't gotten to responding to many. There's only so much time in the day. I will try to get to them!
WRITING GOALS FOR 2025: Basically write more, and write as often as I can. There are so many of my WIP I want to get into and finish . . hopefully some of you will find them interesting to read!
Wishing you all a Happy New Year and a productive and creative 2025! I look forward to seeing/reading all you create!
See links and descriptions to everything under the cut!

Pretty Shiny things (Klaine fic) - 1,943 words
Summary:
The clangs and shrieks of the alarm system at Christie's Auction House filled the corridors, echoing through the mostly empty building. He worried his bottom lip between his teeth for a few moments as he considered his options. “Come on,” Alex softly cajoled. “You can’t just say things like: ‘I played Elvira in a school production of Blythe Spirit’ and not expect me to ask for pictures . . or at least the lowdown on it all.” Alex pouted again to prove his point. “I’m a weak man, H. These are the types of things I need to know more about.” ***** From a Friday Ficlet prompt: "Tell Me anything. Everything."

Kurt had all of his mother's crystals, divination tools, and journals tucked away in her old trunk up in the attic of their home. He could read tea leaves and scry with the best of them. He had long ago lost focus on the chapter Professor Holiday had assigned them for the evening, so at this point, any other distraction would be welcome. Even if it was prefect duties.
Originally this was a bit of a false start for my fic, Advanced Potions

He’s lonely, stressed out and miserable. He’s almost ready to throw in the towel and return home to Ohio when a chance meeting with a musician in Central Park changes everything. (Klaine) Sanctuary - (Klaine Word Scramble 2023) Crown Prince Blaine has stumbled into a secluded glade, trying to escape the horrors of the bloody war his father had brought upon their kingdom. 2024 Fic Writer End of Year Roundup
Answer and then tag three or more creators to keep the game going!
(If you're in my answers consider yourself tagged if you'd like to play!!)
1. How many words did you publish on AO3 in 2024? 619,247... with the way A03 calculates I don't think that's entirely accurate but that's what it says... I would take off 225k and guess it's more around 350-400k
2. How many fics did you complete this year?
18, those event weeks really had a chokehold on me
3. How many in progress or ongoing fics did you start this year?
I have only posted a couple of WIP this year. I have stared at least 20 more, but have yet to post anything on them. Hopefully, I will have them all organized by this evening so I can start with my 2025 goals of getting them all done or at least well on their way!
4. What was your favorite thing you wrote?
I had the best time with What We Deserve!! It has to go at the top of the list.
Honorable mention would be Mother Save Us From Your Twisted fate just because it came out of nowhere and I think I started the first part and finished it in a day or two like a madman and posted without really giving it a second look. Truly a fic of strange passion.
5. What piece was your most experimental or different from your usual style?
probably Lighthouse in the Woods. Exploring a poly dynamic in a fic I didn't originally intend to be poly was an interesting choice for my brain lol but a fun and rewarding challenge!
6. Did any fics surprise you - either while writing or their reception?
Under the Weeping Beech shocked me just because it demanded I write it but there was very little reward with how sad it is. Y'all know I love sad angsty shit but I always seem to find a way to make everything ok in the end. Not so much this time but I simply couldn't make myself write it any other way. This was how it was supposed to be
7. Do you have a fic you wrote and loved that went under the radar? (This is your sign to reblog/repost it!)
Everything kind of went how I expected it to this year, but a fic that went under MY OWN PERSONAL RADAR was When Even Moonlight Burns. I adore the outline but couldn't make myself get serious about it this year. I'm waiting for my depraved self to rise to the surface for that one. It needs to be a beautiful disgrace
8. Who is an artist that inspired you?
I'm not sure I could name anyone without naming EVERYONE. If you have created Azris, you're on this list.
@queercontrarian inspires me daily with her work. Her attention to detail and the fashion work in her pieces are notches on my bones, that's how permanently they have changed me. I find myself staring at them for entirely too long to be appropriate and keep coming back to revisit my favorites!
@elleybug has a vision for her art that speaks to me on a cellular level. Every single piece supplies me with endless amounts of emotion that just make me want to create and create and create!
9. Who is an author that inspired you?
This question is really testing my memory because every time I read something I get inspired. All of you are just too damn good so if I forget to tag you it's only because I am stupid or I simply haven't been able to get to your amazing work yet BUT I WILL... and not because you don't belong on this list!!!
@fieldofdaisiies for her sweet pieces, @born-to-riot for her funny pieces, @acourtofladydeath for her thoughtful pieces, @secret-third-thing for her weird pieces, @iftheshoef1tz for her poetic pieces, @g00seg1rl for her horny pieces, @pippsmcgee for the dazzling intricacy of that piece she is teasing me with @talibunny30 for characterization in that nesta fic that wont leave me, @jules-writes-stories for the emotion she brings, @the-darkestminds for her dark mind that's like a twin flame, @mistandmemories for all that edging and absolute adorableness, @yanny-77 for the mastery of the dynamics between characters, @fourteentrout for the delicious intimacy, @brunetterebel010 for the vulnerability, @neciebee for the lyrical prose, @whisperingmidnights for the soulful prose, @mudandmire for the gorgeous and unique ideas, @unanswered-stars for the heartbreaking beauty!
10. Who is a new author you discovered?
so so many this year! Special mentions to @jules-writes-stories, @the-darkestminds, @mistandmemories who I really consider to be the big three of 2024 for me! Following along each of your beautiful stories this year has been a highlight!
11. Did you do any collaborations? How did it start?
not this year!
12. What accomplishments are you proudest of?
Everything I managed to finish lol. I was worried it would be nothing at all!
13. What did you learn about writing or creating this year?
I work best when I am just dishing out what's been gnawing at me, and trying to participate in too much just for the sake of it was too draining!
14. Any advice you’d like to share with new or aspiring writers?
It's fanfic, take the pressure OFF and just write the thing! If there is a story in your heart you really want to have exist in the world, you need to get it out and let it breathe! Don't focus on numbers or style or craft while you're just getting started. Have fun and create because you NEED to, everything else can come later.
15. What are your creative goals for 2025?
I have approx 12347576412 projects I would like to get written... I'm here to mass produce simply because I can't keep up with my brain. LOL. But truly if I can get one full multichapter fic completed this year I will be very happy!

"What the FUCK does this have to do with fandom?"
Funny. The answer is right there in front of you, yet you're either so clueless you don't see it, or you're purposefully feigning ignorance just so everyone who points it out looks like they're bringing it up for no reason, so you can shut the whole conversation down.
This isn't a reply for that person though, more an explanation of some of the major things that came to my mind for everyone else who is curious.
Discord servers are filled with people who announce every time they "switch", who say laundry lists of topics "trigger their alters" so everyone needs to memorize lists just so they don't have a fit (won't even get into how ableist this is for people with actual memory and memorization issues), and who engage in portrayal policing because they identify so much with a character they pretend to have an alter and can't stand the thought of people sharing other thoughts on said characters.
People eating up tangibly bad disinformation, either tiktok-derived or from non peer-reviewed studies, and using that disinformation to diagnose themselves, then attack people for daring to write characters more realistically, because they perceive the disinformation as correct instead.
Trauma olympics. People, mostly kids as others have graciously pointed out, readily disclosing their traumatic experiences with no warning. Many an ex-faker, intentionally or not, have even admitted to fabricating stories because they wanted people to pity and pay attention to them. See: "sick role". And people don't want to hear all this shit when they just want to talk about their blorbos.
Fakers in tumblr roleplay calling others ableist and shunning them from their groups when those people say they're not comfortable rping with them, even though it's obvious the person is faking because you can throw a rock and hit someone with 100+ alters of recent shows and movies, including them.
Characters are a big part of fandom, and it's a pain in the fucking ass to go into tags for your blorbo and see someone roleplaying a Freddy Fazbear alter.
Performative activism. It's a big problem in fandom in general, between the reblog bait, "if you don't share this you're a bad person", and so on. These people with fake DID take further advantage of peoples' desires to do right, and mislead them, intentionally or not, and make fandom feel even more like you could step on hot coals any second if you don't humor something, even if it sends up red flags. And using one's common sense makes them susceptible to being called ableist or (surprise, surprise) "exclusionary" because hey, nobody wants to be called either of those things, that would be awful.
So forgive me if I don't call the post I'm replying to a load of horse manure.
Posting as a response to a previous ask.

S2E2 - The Clue Write Up P6 -Land of Uz: from the final return to present day onwards
I am sure I can get this episode wrapped up with one last section so let’s jump on in. I suppose the first thing to note is that the double spread we see Aziraphale staring so intently at is different to the one that started this flashback sequence off. Presumably he has, in the present day, been reading through the pages as he been reminiscing. There are a few figures missing from the drawing we can see on the plate, most notably Crawley himself. The figure in the background would appear to be Aziraphale, though the features are vague and make it difficult to say with any certainty. I find Crawley’s absence interesting in particular, seeing as the presence of his adopted character of Bildad the Shuhite is documented in the Epilogue of the Book of Job, and it makes me wonder if Aziraphale was intending to ask Crowley about this when he emerges from his reverie (only to find the demon gone of course). I have so many silly little questions about this turn of events in the book shop: what was Aziraphale going to ask? Was he simply confirming that the footsteps he heard did in fact belong to Crowley? When did Crowley leave? Why did he leave? Where did he go? Was there a one-sided conversation where he announced his intention to go? Did he speak to Jim before he left? I don’t know why this bothers me so much that Aziraphale comes back to the present to find himself alone with us having no explanation as to where Crowley has gone, and perhaps it wouldn’t bother me so if Aziraphale didn’t clearly have the start of a conversation on his mind. I doubt we’ll ever find out the answers to these questions now either ☹
There is something to be said for Aziraphale’s character assassination of Gabriel at this point in the storyline.
AZIRAPHALE: You know, you really used to be… awful. I mean… SO awful.
He’s not wrong, by any stretch of the imagination. It’s clear that Aziraphale is confident with his evaluation, and I do believe that there is a part of him that says this both to help him try and muddle through the oddities of his situation and to provide some background for Jim himself. I also believe that his making this statement, out loud, to someone other than himself, should signal to us just how far his character has come since the days from Uz that we’ve just seen. It’s fairly clear to see how uncomfortable he is with Gabriel’s attitude and actions in the Land of Uz scenes, but he manages to reconcile this discomfort with the assurances that it was all for the will of God that things had to be so. Nothing has changed in the present day - Gabriel’s thoughts and actions have already happened and the reasoning for them is constant - and yet Aziraphale’s evaluation of the situation is entirely different. No more the compliant angel that can forgive any unpleasantness by attributing it to God’s will; he has seen the vile being for what he was and, perhaps due to his present company (or lack thereof), does not fear the wrath of God (or the Heavenly host) by pointing it out. Not only that, his perspective on the entire incident has changed. Where he previously showed discomfort with the actions being taken by Heaven, his focus now lies of the behaviour of a particular individual. In short, it’s a much more human-like response; judging thoughts and emotions rather than actions and outcomes.
Remember all those questions I had earlier on about Crowley and his whereabouts? Well, the next scene doesn’t really help to answer a single one of them, and may in fact just create new ones to add to the list because we see him walking back towards the book shop. So, wherever he went, he went on foot. And given the way the scene unfolds, it looks like he’s on his way back to the car to… what? Leave the Soho area? Without saying anything to Aziraphale? Perhaps it was simply to get something from the car and take it into the book shop. Whatever the reason, the car isn’t parked in its usual place. Usually I might say there’s something to be said for this but in this instance I think it’s just a convenience for filming as it could have made the conversation between him and Nina a little difficult if he hadn’t had to walk past the coffee shop before arriving at the car. Talking of subtle inconsistencies though, there’s this tiny detail:
Not getting the basis of reference? Alright, here’s a little comparison conversation from the previous episode:
So, despite the fact that Crowley is very capable of understanding and using sarcasm (as explicitly stated during the previous episode), that piece of subtext appears to have gone completely underneath his radar in this conversation with Nina. Personally, I think this has something to do with his personal stake in the topic of conversation - the likelihood of success of his rainstorm idea as a surefire way for people to fall in love. He does look genuinely disheartened that Nina doesn’t seem to consider his grand idea for romance to be all that love-inducing at all. This observation aside, the biggest thing this streetside conversation does for me is further cement my dislike of the Nina character (it’s the contemptuous “Mister-Six-Espressos-in-a-Big-Cup” line. Seriously, what’s that about?), and I don’t think that’s the intention. The entire exchange doesn’t even feel particularly natural to me - Nina’s contempt, the sudden rainstorm questioning that leapfrogs into an unspoken probing about Maggie, the defensive conclusion about Nina’s partner. It just feels so stilted to me. Perhaps it simply goes hand-in-hand with the Bentley’s unusual placement on the street - as a scriptual stepping stone to get us to THAT conversation about the Bentley. Speaking of which…
I think this is Aziraphale at his most adorable. Just look at his little face, so excited! If we ignore for a moment the fact that we can actually see him crouching down behind the car if we look through the passenger side window, there’s a little something that might be worth mentioning. There’s a little music “sting” we can hear as he pops up from behind the car:
Now, this could be just a sweet little noise inserted into the soundtrack for comic effect. In a really sickly sweet and fluffy way, it could also represent the feelings invoked within Crowley when he sees Aziraphale (*simultaneous “ahh” and gagging noises*). There is another possibility though, because it sounds a little like a miracle noise (hence why we have to ignore the fact we can see him crouching down beforehand). It is entirely possible that he miracled himself into position to greet Crowley, something which we have seen him do before (albeit at a time when Crowley might have simply turned and walked away if he had spotted him). And I actually feel like there would be more questions about his behaviour if he doesn’t miracle himself into position: how long has be been there for? Why is he hiding? Why does he wait on the passenger side given he’s about to talk to Crowley about the possibility of driving the car? How does he know Crowley is going back to the car in the first place? Just another batch of questions I doubt we’ll ever have the answers to, although these ones I feel less bothered by. I do love Crowley’s assumption that Aziraphale just needs a lift to go somewhere, and I find the idea that the angel just conveniently miracles himself next to the passenger door if ever he needs a lift to be highly entertaining.
This angel 100% knows he’s crossing a line, doesn’t he? He’s hilarious, honestly. And for once, has actually managed not only to read to cues he’s getting back from Crowley, but has pre-empted them, having already constructed a counter argument for what he knows will not be a receptive response to his suggestion.
I’m sorry, what’s that now? What sort of “use” are you both getting out of it with that facial expression, Mr. Fell? I don’t think there’s a single person in the world that would watch that and feel like the sentence was devoid of double entendre. Regardless, and skating over the comedy that is so delightfully crafted into this scene, there’s a clear statement here about the state of their relationship - that Aziraphale no longer considers the two material objects that they hold dear to one another no longer belonging to just one of them, but are shared. And it’s nice to see that the ability to read cues from one another has returned to business-as-usual so quickly - I love watching Aziraphale arguing that he can of course drive the Bentley because he has a license. I don’t really think that’s what Crowley meant when he said the angel couldn’t drive his car! And yet, the end of this conversation has also been carefully crafted by Aziraphale; he presents the care of the book shop to the demon as a sort of an exchange of trust between them (you can trust me with your car, and to prove it, I’ll entrust the book shop to you in my absence), but really he just needs someone to watch Jim, which I don’t think Crowley would have been happy to do in any circumstances. Honestly, this demon really did just get the bum end of the deal. This entire exchange, apart from being hilarious (especially that little hand slap that we sadly only get to hear and not see), is actually a lovely insight into a side of Aziraphale’s character that we really don’t get to see very often. He’s cunning and crafty, and mischievous with it. And confident. This isn’t him stuttering his way through a problem he doesn’t know how to get out of - there’s no hand wringing, no flapping. Just calm asserted application of plans. And it’s clear to see that Crowley knows he’s been utterly ambushed by it. Delightful.
Back inside the bookshop, we’re treated to an array of book titles. It’s been a while since we had such a richness of potential subtext, so I’ll break them down into a table and try and keep it brief. Here’s the shot of the bookshelf that Jim is “sorting”:
And the table below contains their details with possible links to the Good Omens storyline:
Link to @fuckyeahgoodomens post about The Crow Road.
There are another two books added to the shelf after the shot of it leaves our screens:
Pride and Prejudice, which follows the turbulent relationship between a young couple, who must overcome their pride and prejudices before they can be free to fall in love. Possible connections: too obvious to write down.
Good Omens. Meta-as-fuck. ‘Nuff said.
Jokes aside, I’m sure I have but scratched the surface here. I may come back to do a more thorough deep dive if I have time before the finale drops. Or maybe not if I think it might involve actually reading some of them - as I’ve said before, I find classic literature beyond dull. If anybody wants to take up the mantel on that one, have at it.
This last trip to Uz is one I think we all know and love dearly, and I don’t want to really spend a lot of time simply retelling what you can all see on the screen with your own eyes. Instead, I’ll just highlight a couple of poignant take-aways, for me at least:
Devastated as he clearly is, Aziraphale has resigned himself to his fate of being cast out of Heaven completely. No fuss, no mess - he intends to simply allow himself to be taken to Hell.
It would seem that, ever since the Garden of Eden, Aziraphale has been dispatched to Earth on a full-time basis. How much of his upset is caused by his sadness at being removed from Earth, rather than his removal from Heaven? Granted, this angel has proved incapable of separating “who/what he is” from “where he comes from”, which would present something of an existential dilemma to him, I just don’t hear an awful lot of regret specifically over the possibility that he could no longer be associated with Heaven.
We know from Crowley’s brief retelling of his fall that it involved a very long, very painful, descent from the Heavens and into the bowels of Hell. Presumably Aziraphale would remember the details of how the rebellious angels were originally cast out of Heaven, yet he appears to believe his descent will be somewhat more dignified.
Aziraphale openly says that he knew it would be Crawley sent to escort him to Hell. Why would this be? If he genuinely believed that his rebellious actions had been discovered, would it not be more sensible that he be summoned back to Heaven to face trial and punishment?
Crawley’s response to Aziraphale’s tearful please is simple - I’m not taking you to Hell because I don’t think you’d like it there. I think this speaks volumes about Crawley’s state of mind towards Aziraphale at this point - he likes this angel just the way he is, and even given the chance to place them on an even keel, allowing them to spend more time together, he wouldn’t do it.
Despite the fact that he has just had a hand in saving the lives of three innocent children, Aziraphale is still incapable of understanding that being good or evil isn’t as simple as being one of the other, that there is something of a spectrum involved. Not only that, the action he believes that has tipped him over into demon territory is simply lying, the insinuation being that if he had done what was expected of him, he could still call himself an agent of good. So, to sum up: lie to Archangel Gabriel = evil demon; allow three innocent children to be killed without reason = good angel. I don’t suppose it takes much of a genius to comprehend why this particular moral dilemma might have sparked a severe identity crisis in him.
Crawley’s actions towards Aziraphale (aside from laughing at his clear distress!) are (sorry Crowley) extremely kind. He understands what Aziraphale is going through, having gone through his own crisis of faith (and suffering the consequences) thousands of years before. And he’s not just kind in what he says, but gentle with it. He leads the angel to the only conclusion that feels truly justified and offers an olive branch of friendship between them with a veiled confession of his own loneliness, planting the seed in Aziraphale’s mind that perhaps they don’t need to be alone in their own individual lonely states.
Phew, that was a lot of subtextual stuff in that little scene (it’s less than three minutes long), and I don’t think it’s a surprise to any of us that the acting between Michael and David here is stellar. There’s one last thing about the scene that I think is worth noting, and it’s to do with the soundtrack.
Sound familiar to you? It’s no secret that there are musical motifs that run throughout David Arnold’s score for both seasons. This one (a particular treatment of the main theme tune for the show) can also be heard in the final episode of season one, as we see Adam running through the orchard:
There are some subtle instrumentation and tempo differences, sure, but the motif is the same. And why do I think this is important? Well, the subtext for Adam’s final scene in season one is one of personal growth - the events of the previous episodes have forced a change in his perspective that triggers the beginning of his movement from childhood into adulthood. Where he starts to understand that good and evil can’t always be simply defined by labels, that there are subtleties are play. And isn’t this exactly what is happening with Aziraphale in this final Uz scene? I think this is Aziraphale’s metaphorical “leaving the garden” scene. And, just as we saw him do in the final episode of season one, he goes through it with the guidance and support of Crawley. It’s a really beautiful parallel between the two seasons, and an excellent way to end the episode.
And there we have it, the end of this episode. Looking ahead to my notes for the next episode, it looks like I might manage to get that one done if a few less parts (and that is likely to do with the fact that the Crowley and Aziraphale are largely apart for present day parts of the episode!), but we’ll see. For now though, and as always; questions, comments, discussion, always welcome. See you for the next one!

Thanks to @di-42for tagging me! I had to write this on my phone, hence the delay.
What fandoms do you write in?
Currently just Good Omens. (I am graywings on AO3.) I used to write Beatles fanfic in the 90s and early 2000s, but it’s on friends' websites (if the sites still exist.)
How many words have you published in 2024?
About 116K spread across eleven stories.
What is your greatest achievement this year?
I feel it’s finishing The War of the Hs, the 93K sequel to The Language of Forgiveness.
What are your favorite top three fics you wrote this year?
Top of the list for me is The War of the Hs. Yes, it deals with Hell and Satan and a lot of original characters, but it also features angels and demons fighting with silly string and Nerf guns, a dance-off, Freddie Mercury, and more. Two and three are harder to pick. I’ll say “The Bentley and the Pumpkin” and “Passer and the Popcorn Ball.” The first story is about the Bentley needing a companion in the South Downs, and the latter was written for the Desk Job in Hell prompt. The focus is on original characters from “The War of the Hs,” but I like the character development.
What was your greatest pit of despair moment?
I hate to answer this one because it’s complaining, but I would have loved more reader engagement like I had when I was writing The Language of Forgiveness. What I write might not be what the typical fanfic reader wants, but I just want to connect with the people who get what I want to write about.
What have you learned?
To be humble about my writing and that there are a lot of other great writers out there. To put more passion and description into my stories, even if that’s hard to do at the end of a long day.
What fic did you want to do but never made it off the ground?
I have three partial stories, including one where God treats the Job minisode like a research experiment. In the second, Aziraphale and Crowley are teaching other angels and demons how to eat. Aziraphale is so nervous that they stop time and have sex, but that’s the part that’s not coming (pun very much intended!) The third one is about Crowley accompanying Muriel and two original angels to a nightclub where they learn how to dance.
Did you beta any fics? Any fics you want to shout out?
Sorry, I haven’t betaed anything. Maybe next year.
What three fics have you read this year that you love?
Sky Clear Blue
The Last Angel
Sins of Knowledge
What ideas are percolating for next year?
This won’t be for AO3, but I want to take an original angel/demon pair I created for The War of the Hs and write a romance for them in a non-GO setting so I can indie-publish it. (They are an asexual couple in GO, but they might reproduce in the new story.) I’m not much of a romance reader, so I’ll learn a lot writing that story.
For AO3, I want to write more stories about God observing Aziraphale and Crowley. For STP’s birthday, I want to write another story about a nightingale at the South Downs cottage. But mostly we’ll see where the Muse takes me next. Maybe I’ll return to some of my original fiction, but I doubt the Aziracrow brain rot is curable.
2024 fic roundup
Finally getting round to doing this! Just in time for the end of the year!
Many, many thanks to @curiouspupsicle and @bellisima-writes for tagging me all those weeks ago, ant to @cheeseplants for creating the questions. Enjoy curious's answers here, bellisima's answers here, cheeseplants's answers here.
What fandoms do you write in?
Good Omens, only Good Omens, nothing but Good Omens.
How many words have you published in 2024?
133k. Huh! Me?
What is your greatest achievement this year?
In the context of fandom and fanfiction, being brave enough to put myself out there and share my work is probably my greatest personal achievement. But I'm also quite proud to have plotted an 85k fiction while working 55 hours a week (and being lucky enough to have a husband and friends to spend my free time with).
What are your favourite top three fics you wrote this year?
That's an easy one! None of my favourite three are the ones with more engagement, strangely enough!
And I Did, rated E, 85k.
While I know this could have been written much better, I am incredibly proud of this fiction. It's whole season 3 fiction where I managed to pour all my headcanon in a way that hopefully doesn't feel too forced. I think it has an original plot, good side characters and tension. I tried to throw in some humour wherever possible as well. It features Supreme Archangel Aziraphale and Grand Duke of Hell Crowley. They haven't talked for almost two years. The end of the world is approaching. They are on opposite sides. And they both know neither of them was ever going to make a different choice to the one they made.
Only Ever Meant For Someone Else, rated T, 9k.
My first human AU, wheee! It was so much fun to write! I think writing human AUs allows so much freedom, although one shots and shorter stories can be a bit harder than canon compliant short stories. But I had a chance to explore some versions of the characters that I don't really see in canon, but very much enjoy in fictions, and wanted to try my hand at that. And I liked the result! Written for the Scribbling Vaguely Downwards advent calendar.
Every year, the night before Christmas, taxi driver Aziraphale drives passengers to and from the hospital for charity. On the Christmas morning of 2023 he was ready to go home and rest with a cup of tea, a mince pie, and a book after a long night.
Guess who?
“No, you may not!” Barked the other. Then he started pacing up and down the pavement, rambling to himself. “Anathema’s going to kill me. She’s actually going to kill me! She had to go into labour on fucking Christmas day, just my luck!”
Oh, dear.
“In-into labour?”
The stranger stopped pacing and, yet again, looked at Aziraphale sternly. He joined together the tips of his right thumb and forefinger, and punctuated his next words with a gracious movement of his hand.
“Yeah. It means she’s about to give birth.”
“Does it, now.”
Angel! Angel! They're At It Again! rated M, 5k
I really love this little story of mine. I've been told that it made some readers cry and laugh at the same time, and it doesn't get much better than that.
It's the year 2030. The world never ended. Aziraphale and Crowley are living happily and safely together as a married couple. Everything would be well, if it wasn't that lately Aziraphale has been a bit busy. A bit distracted. Now, Crowley can't have that, can he? He seeks the advice of his girlfriends, who unwittingly give him an idea on how to liven up his marriage.
A fluffy story about how we get to a certain cottage.
What was your biggest pit of despair moment?
Tying up all the loose ends in And I Did. Sometimes it felt like I was just hitting a wall and I couldn't possibly ever go through. I felt so embarrassed -mortified, really- that some people had read the story up to a certain point and I had just to let them down, because I couldn't possibly write anything that would make sense with the rest of the story. Even though the main points were planned from the beginning, there were still all those little details that write themselves, basically, and I had no idea what to do with some of them towards the end. I still don't know how I managed to pull it off, honestly, but somehow I did it in a way that I found satisfying enough.
What have you learned?
That people are so much better than I am. Really. And I don't mean at writing fiction. Well, people are better than me at writing fiction, but that's not what I mean here. The amount of people who are ready to read about someone else's ideas and headcanons with an open mind, enjoy stories that they don't necessarily agree with, is astounding. I have very much to learn from this community.
What fic did you want to do but never made it off the ground?
I could tell you. But then I would have to erase your memory.
A fiction that has never made it off the ground is a fiction that has yet to make it off the ground.
Did you beta any fics? Any favs you want to shout out?
I was asked a couple of times, but due partly to my lack of time, partly to English not being my first language, I had to reluctantly decline. I do offer my thoughts on my betas' fictions, though. One of them hasn't published her work yet, and the other has a fantastic one shot on Ao3, called The Corset.
Aziraphale never understood just why he had been issued with a body likes his. He was the Guardian of the Eastgate, after all! So when in the 17th century corsets for men were fashionable again, he had an idea ...
What three fics have you read this year that you love?
Hah! We both know it's not going to be only three, don't we?
Some of these fics were written before, some long before, 2024, but I only read them this year. It's quite hard to pick my favourites among so much talent and creativity, but I'll do my best. I also can't help but notice that my all time favourites are not among the superpopular ones, so please don't be shy and check them out! (And leave kudos and comments!)
The Beginning Of The End (Again), rated M, 78k.
Season 3 fiction full of plot, great characterisation, humour and pining. It has of course a happy ending. It is beyond me how this fic didn't get more engagement, especially when it first came out, closer to the end of season 2.
The Anon Before Christmas, rated E, 66k.
One of my favourite human AUs. The characterisation is spot on and the slow burn is just absolutely perfect. But I did love the whole array of characters surrounding Crowley and Aziraphale. I love how this story is as much about friendship and chosen family than it is about love and romance.
The Bookseller And The Garden, rated T, 13k.
Canon divergent fiction where Crowley is a demon stationed on earth, Aziraphale is an angel stationed on earth, but they have never met until present day. There's no end of the world in sight, only an angel and a demon falling in love and not knowing how to break it to the other that they're not human. I laughed all the way through.
Wrong Turn, rated T, 37k.
Honestly, I don't know why this fiction touched me so much. I just couldn't stop thinking about it for days after I finished it. It's a post season 1 fiction where Crowley suddenly finds himself in a parallel universe at the time the apocalypse is just about to happen. The Crowley and Aziraphale in that universe have a different history to our Crowley and Aziraphale. All our Crowley wants to do is to go back to his universe and his very own angel, but how? As you follow the main plot and focus on Crowley's thoughts and actions, you'll start slowly feeling the other story get hold of you, and it won't let go until the very end and beyond.
Happiness, More Or Less, rated M, 21k
This human AU moved me so very much I cried. Crowley moves into his new flat in Soho, only to discover the flat in haunted by the ghost of the owner of the bookshop downstairs. I won't tell anything else about the plot other than it does have a very sweet happy ending, and it gets there via a rollercoaster of emotions. This is really one of those fictions that leave me in awe of the fandom's talent and creativity. Read it, read it, read it!
One last one that I haven't finished reading yet, but I know it's one of my all time favourites, is The Last Angel, rated E, 162k.
Canon divergent fiction where Crowley and Aziraphale were never assigned to earth, Armageddon happened and hell won the war. I've said many things about this fiction, among which that I can't believe the writer does this in her spare time and writing is not actually her job, and this is the most Good Omens-y fic I have ever read. It's astoundingly good.
What ideas are percolating for next year?
Watch out for The Angel Horror Show! When I learned that Peter Hinwood, the actor who played Rocky in The Rocky Horror Picture Show didn't have a long career as an actor, bout instead went on to become an antiques dealer, I knew I had to write this fiction with Aziraphale as the actor who many years ago played Angel/Rocky in The Angel Horror Show and subsequent film The Angel Horror Picture Show and is now living a comfortable life as a book and antiques dealer, and Crowley as the actor who played Demon/Frank, and went on to become a successful movie and theatre actor and director. I've just started writing it and I'm extremely excited about it!
Who do you want to thank?
Without the shadow of a doubt @sabine-smitten-obviously and IneffableShortCake who have been so incredibly generous with their time and support in the past 8 months! But also everyone who's ever left me a comment making me feel like my stories were liked, from the long comments to the ones with just enthusiastic syllables, from the incredibly witty ones to the more personal ones, thank you, thank you, thank you!
Tag, answer any Qs that suit and play along!
I think because I'm so late in the game that most of the writers I would usually tag have already been tagged by someone else, but perhaps a few haven't done this yet.
@smua70 @ngk-668 @ineffable-duck7
And anyone who wants to answer!
This was fun!

Hi, I've read the Residuum comic, and I think the characterization of the boys is really good. I was wondering if you have any tips on how to write them? Especially Mikey, please.
I'd actually recommend re-watching the show with one character in mind. All my notes on the turtles come from doing separate re-watches for each of them. The key is to ONLY watch the character you are focusing on.
In the end, you'll probably be happier with your own personal interpretation. As we are with ours lol
TL;DR
Massive post under the cut
To preface: we'll be contrasting (this Mikey) against the fandoms version of Mikey, as our interpretation is very different. Don't worry if you prefer the fandom version, there's nothing… wrong per se with writing him this way. We just find him flat and uninteresting. (Main author: not me, I just hate him, lol).
Every reader or fan comes into a story with their own biases and experiences. A ton of our view of Mikey is based on how our siblings acted. We see Mikey as the young sibling that got preferential treatment from the whole family, simply due to being the youngest, but is now aging out of the privilege. Which all youngest siblings do at some point or another.
The fandoms version of Mikey is empathetic, naive, vulnerable, co-dependent and quite often a door mat who cries at the drop of a hat. And as much as the fandom like to say that people love him… when this particular character archetype is in other media, they seem to attract the most criticism. Mable pines, Bolin from Korra, people rag on Aang all the fucking time, and Steven Universe is a whole other bag. These characters don't deserve it, and yet it happens anyway.
To flatten Mikey to simply 'the baby' is a disservice. We don't see or write Mikey as the fandom “baby” version (cinnamon roll uwu). Part of this comes from having multiple siblings, so we interpret the times when Mikey does the puppy dog eyes as typical younger sibling bullshit, mostly by the way that the other turtles rarely react to it, if at all.
The other turtles traits can also get projected onto Mikey. Mikey being the fandom therapist is in the same category as this. He isn't a therapist, he's a psychology nerd who likes to psychoanalyze people and meddle in their relationships. (Donnie and Shelldons relationship, Splinter and Draxums...) he's not trying to resolve your emotional issues. Of the turtles, the character that cares the most about people's feelings is Raph. And Leo is more of a consoler than Mikey ever is. It flattens all the turtle's characterizations when you start doing this because you are ripping out parts that are integral to another characters' complexity.
Co-author has told me that they've seen people become confused when going into the show after only reading fan fiction or coming from the movie. They see his characterization as inconsistent and become upset when their view of him is contradicted. This also happens when a fandomized version of him becomes the primary characterization that they use. Sometimes when this disconnect happens (or if they just don't like the character), Mikey characterization is swung in the complete opposite direction.
They make him manipulative and abusive, or someone who is hyper violent and avoids being held accountable for anything. This is an uncharitable interpretation of him and can come off as pretty racist depending on the circumstances. (like if someone considers the turtles black or not)
Every version of Mikey is a shithead (affectionate), even this one. Especially this one, really. When Mikey not doing the "baby schtick" hes mean. If you pay attention to what he's saying, and just not his tone of voice, he's consistently saying pretty mean or condescending stuff. (You could take this as simply naïveté, but he still says mean shit pretty often regardless)
The times he does say genuinely nice stuff the turtles don't exactly expect it from him, at least, in the early season. And while he is mean, and seems to find saying mean things to be funny, Mikey isn't cruel. Nor will he ever be.
This shit-headery behavior is found in both 2003 and 18 Mikey. They have a degree of social intelligence that lets them use it to annoy people into doing what they want. 18 just has the advantage of being baby faced and having better tonal control. He's good at using people's perception of him to get what he wants.
Let Mikey have his problematic traits, but don't overexaggerate them. He doesn't revel in fooling people. He loves doing character bits, and the baby faced one just happens to be one of them. However, to infantilize or to deem him incompetent is to piss him off, he wants to be viewed as a competent part of the team and competent as an individual. He's not insecure about being young, he just doesn't want to be treated like he can't do anything.
Mikey above all is an optimistic character, he sees the brighter side quite often and is conscious of the harm his actions have on people. Mostly after the fact, but he consistently attempts to rectify the harm he has personally done to peoples lives. (Todd, Bullhop, Draxum). Food and shelter seems to be a thing that he considers to be a right. He doesn't cross a boundary twice once he learns of it, and he never pushes people too far (if he likes you, that is. if he doesn't know you or doesn't like you, he doesn't give a singular shit. But that is standard to most people.). He doesn't care about people's stuff, though. He breaks things all the time.
Mikey understands boundaries, but he doesn't automatically recognize them. He needs them to verbalized or for there to be a very obvious reaction to the boundary being crossed (unfortunately, for Todd and Donnie). Sometimes people mess up (esp. younger people), and it can take a while for teens to learn where boundary is, but he fully respects the boundaries he does know about. He doesn't act petulant when he's told about boundary, he apologizes, accepts it, and moves on. He doesn't dwell.
Mikey doesn't hold on to distressing emotions. He bounces between emotions quickly, but isn't effected in the long run. One thing Iv'e seen people often conflate is the difference between sensitive and vulnerable. Mikey is sensitive, but I have never seen him vulnerable to others. To be sensitive is to be easily influenced by the current situation. To be vulnerable is to hold that influence for a long time. Characters can have one, both, or neither of these traits. But Mikey is not vulnerable. It is the difference between compressing memory foam and a piece of metal until they deform. One will pop back, the other does not.
Those who are vulnerable but not sensitive will take longer to effect, but once you do, they will hold on to that emotion for a very long time. The vulnerable, are grudge holders. (leo). But like I've said, Mikey bounces back. What a character does has an effect on his emotions, but it doesn't make a lasting impression.
Forgiveness is another thing people like to push on him. It is not that Mikey forgives people easily, it's just that he doesn't hold grudges. He neither forgives nor forgets, but he does not ruminate. He's generally affable, first impressions seem to be a big part of how he views people. He is idealistic, and doesn't assume people are unchanging and/or evil, but he's not a mark.
Mikey isn't so much as naive or overly trusting… it's just that he's inexperienced. He doesn't get fooled by anyone in the series except meat sweats, and that's because Meatsweats is on Todd drugs. Mikey just didn't notice when he started faking. He's not… actually all that aware of people's emotional states, passively. He has to tune in to notice things like that.
Mikey isn't someone who really tries to regulate others emotions, either. The fandom like to make Mikey afraid of his brothers fighting and others being upset, but Mikey doesn't actually care. The most distressed we ever see him in a fight is in the movie, and he's not SCARED, he's just concerned (and then alarmed once it turned physical). If anything, outside extenuating circumstances (like the movie), Mikey actually seems to find their fights annoying.
(Mikey actually seems to have a pretty short fuse, but his bounciness doesn't really let it linger very long, lmao)
(One pet peeve of fandom Mikey is the constant crying, crying at fights, crying at insults, crying for no reason all the time. Sure, he tears up when he gets emotional, but when Mikey is genuinely crying It's when he's desperate, like when he's hungry, or when he's trying to save Leo from certain doom. Same thing, really.)
Mikey respects no one (we love him for this). He admires people, he admires his family: April, the turtles, his dad, Lou Jitsu. He admires Rupert Swaggert, but he respects none of them. No one is sacrosanct to the Mikey.
Above all, the way we write characters is to give them a past that informs how they act now. We view Mikey and the other turtles as teenagers that were kids, and that will be adults. Yes they all have “problematic” traits, but 1) good characters need flaws, and controversial traits are one of the best to use, and 2) they're teenagers, don't expect adult behaviors from them, also don't expect them to be kids. They're minors, not toddlers.
This is getting as long enough as it is, so we'll stop here, but this is a very broad overview of how we characterize him. There's a lot we didn't cover here, but if we even started on hobbies, or the real minutia of his quirks and ticks, or even how he feels about other specific characters... we'd be here all day. So I hope this is good enough lol
If there was something you wanted to know in particular, you'll need to get specific. Feel free to ask again ahahh
#residual asks#rottmnt#rottmnt michelangelo#rise mikey#side note:#do not write the characters based on archetypes ah la heroes journey/hero with a thousand faces#(john campbell is a racist sexist pos)#hollywood was ruined by the attempts to copy Star Wars ad infintium#everyone thank co-author for deleting all my vitriol#i am full of rage and too many opinions on the show and how people handle the characters#but co-author is a patient soul who has removed all my dumbassery and wrote half of this#thank you co-author we love you#honestly there is so much i want to include here but i didn't want to make you wait longer than this ahahahah#if any of you want our stuff on the other characters you'll have to ask for them separately#and then wait a week or two lmao#also we have a list of mikeys verbal ticks if you want#ough.. writing words give me tummy ache

im completely feral over all your jelsa stories!!!!!! do you ever write established relationship jelsa or have any headcanons about what they would be like together in a serious relationship or marriage????
THANK YOU SO MUCH. 😭😭😭😭😭😭💕💕💕💕🙏 thank you thank you nonny for this super sweet ask and this really lovely question and all of your love and support!! 💕💕💕💕💕
i have... never actually written established!relationship (in any fandom), now that i'm thinking about it? that said, i guess i can come up with a quick list of some headcanons, maybe? 😂 i will have to think about this more, but for now, here's a quick drop:
elsa is an early riser; elsa helps jack create more sustainable sleeping patterns and habit formations 😂
when jack gets Impetuous Urges to Do Something Rash and Impractically Spontaneous, elsa will ground jack, reminding him to think before acting. (he occasionally Still Does It, anyway.) elsa knows what she signed up for, lol.
jack loves to play Harmless(!) Pranks, just to watch elsa’s reaction. (he is no longer allowed to sneak up on her after The Incident).
they also quibble over the definition of "harmless" and the specific logistical implications of that; for a while, jack was banned from further pranking, but then he got more creative at showing elsa that pranks could be wholesome and genuine, in which they could both be in on the joke. however, due to elsa's deeply-rooted Need to Excel and her (Not-so)Secret Competitive AF Streak, her retaliation in escalating the Cleverness Prank War quickly resulted in jack's prompt implementation of the Prank-Free Zones and Time Periods. (no, he was not scared.)
elsa, usually reserved, has learned to let her playful side show more often with jack. she might still pretend to be exasperated by his antics, but sometimes it's part of the game (or habit).
elsa sill struggles with opening up emotionally sometimes, but she progressively feels safe enough to share her innermost thoughts and fears. with time, she confides in him more about her worries. she still never likes the idea that jack sees her Imperfect Parts, but at least she can tolerate the discomfort (and, yes, take comfort in it) now
(jack loves elsa's Imperfect Parts, and jack admits that he is Weirdly Proud and Competitively Honored to be one of the only people, even including anna, who gets to see them. he also is strangely Comforted and Validated that elsa is, in fact, not perfect because for a while there, he was pretty freaked out and intimidated by how fancy she is.)
until he realized that no one ever let her actually be a Weirdo before, and once he realizes the Truth of Elsa Also Being a Secret (albeit perhaps more Subdued) Weirdo, the Universe Aligns.
jack listens to elsa's Big Conversations intently, activating varying levels of Serious Mode.
jack is getting better at recognizing the moments when elsa needs him to play and needs him to listen or Give His Opinion or any combination of those things.
jack learns that it's not always about Saying the Right Thing (which he is not very good at, anyway, or so our Serially Unreliable Narrator thinks), but rather being able to read elsa's mood and anticipate what she might need (even if she is not aware of it herself yet).
elsa is meticulous about planning and preparing for special occasions.
elsa likes traditions! jack likes tradition only because elsa likes them, lol, and hey, okay, these are more fun than he thought?? (who knew fun could be organized??!!?)
so he really wants to show (off to) her by pulling off Incredible Planning Feats in her honor, too (they do not go as smoothly, lol).
jack will often go out of his way to spontaneously create something meaningful, a moment or a gift or a gesture, that reminds elsa that he cares. he is big on words of affirmation, gift giving (but like, souvenirs that he collects on adventures like, "i saw this rock and it reminded me of your cousin olaf, we should put it on the window after we paint his face on it"), and acts of service, as well as physical touch and quality time. HE WANTS LOVE. he wants TO BE LOVED. he wants to prove that he is worthy of being loved.
(and elsa has to get him to Chill Out sometimes, remind him that he doesn't have to Do Things For Her/Anyone in order to be deserving of care; he is more than what he provides for other people.)
(jack gets its, and appreciates it, but also, the Urge to Provide and Protect is still strong, even after so much time, and sometimes Old Habits Die Hard.)
i get the sense that he'd be the type to he wake elsa up in the middle of the night to take her on a surprise adventure, or convince her to Do a Fun Thing without any preparation (/warning).
and she would Be Alarmed at the Lack of Plan (especially if/when jack Did Not Think This Through), but he also took precautions to ward off Concerns by pacifying her with tea, or reassurances that yes, he did call ahead to make sure the restaurant was open before they left the house, of course he did, he would never just leave home without double-checking beforehand (and frantically googles it two minutes later when he thinks she's not looking; she is, naturally, and even occasionally pretends not to be).
elsa approaches conflict with a desire to resolve things Calmly and Logically. she tries to understand jack’s perspective, even when she disagrees, and she’s careful with her words, not wanting to escalate the situation.
however, she can sometimes withdraw emotionally, fearing that she might say something hurtful if she’s too overwhelmed.
jack was initially (and, honestly, still is, even though he understands more now) hurt by her tendency to shut down when she Feels Too Much, and understands (although it's still hard) that elsa needs time to process her feelings and organize her thoughts.
jack also helps elsa actually Feel her Feelings, instead of just trying to intellectualize and analyze them. (she hates it, BUT sees the value. jack lives for these moments in which he realizes that he's actually contributing positively to her life and helping her in some way, rather than just being a burden or a nuisance, as was/is his fear.)
his initial reaction might be to push for a resolution quickly, but he’s also deeply afraid of Creating Distance between them, so after the first few fights, he really makes an effort to find the right balance between Pushing Hard Enough and Not Pushing Too hard, so that he doesn't drive a wedge between them as they work things out.
jack FEELS intensely, and can be so stubborn. he does not always have the most precise vocabulary or tools to describe his thoughts and feelings, or identify the root causes of what is actually going on inside him; sometimes elsa asks a lot of insightful and guiding questions that help jack come to the conclusions himself, and other times, she Puts Into Words the very thing that he had been thinking or feeling, but could not name, and it is very reassuring to have someone who understands him well enough to be able to do that.
after conflicts or arguments, they take time to Decompress and reassure one another (especially if at least one of them, if not both, was Overthinking again).
when they argue (and healthy couples do, remember!), it’s a dance of patience and understanding: elsa might need a moment to Collect Herself, and jack learns to give her that Space while also making it clear that he’s ready to talk whenever she is, and that he is going to try very hard to be Rational and Patient About It.
in the end, they both prioritize their relationship over any disagreement, always finding a way back to each other.
#now that i am really thinking about it#i have not written ANY established!relationship stories (for jelsa or any other ship) actually! why??#that is probably a good question to ask myself. 😂#my first instinct is that it's because i am personally a#Steady Serial Serious Relationship Monogamist#and i already experience so many lovely and wonderful aspects of having a Life Teammate and a trusted partner in Marriage#so i don't typically feel the urge to explore the possibilities of an already-established relationship in fiction...#i feel like my storytelling/fanfiction is based in exploring similar tropes and the base core journeys in different contexts and universes#(e.g. modern mermaid colonial!america regency!england frozen-verse frozen-and-rotg-verses)#because i like playing with how such core ideas can happen so differently (and so similarly) in various worlds with so many different rules#i got into a flow state while writing this and had to stop because i reached the tumblr text post character limit 😅#also you may or may not be surprised to see that many of these characteristics i've listed here in this est.!relationship mindset are#things that they already do in many of my getting-together stories#that's the nature of human relationships for you i guess haha 💕 it's a process! (not a destination)#HERE ARE MY TAKES ANYWAY please enjoy comment reply etc.!#thank you again!!! 💕#therentyoupay anon#therentyoupay ask#jelsa#therentyoupay thoughts on characterization

it has occurred to me that it is truly preposterous that I, the Maker Of A Ridiculous Number Of AUs, have never yet played that ask game that's like "send me an ask with a character pairing and an AU and I'll write 3 sentences"
anyway, send me an ask with a character pairing (or just some characters) and an AU and I'll write probably way more than 3 sentences
#ask game#wait now I have to elaborate don't i#ok ok so#AU ask game#i'll do ship stuff for... yeah basically any ship i've mentioned on here before (too many to list haha)#(and if you're not sure about one you can still send it! I might just write a not-shippy ficlet if I don't really ship it.)#and i'll do ANY non-ship character combinations!#any they don't even need to have met in canon! I will gladly write cracky character interactions#or normal ones too lol#and any kind of AUs are ok too#canon-divergence or wildly-different-canon or not-even-in-the-canon-universe or even maybe a crossover#but it doesn't need to be anything crazy either! like if you just want an obitine coffee shop au or something that's fine too#ok I think at this point I might be rambling#anywayyyyy please send me asks I'm trying to procrastinate on other things
