2018 Fic Roundup
I did this last year and it was nice to do some self reflection and make some goals for 2019. I encourage all my writer friends to do this! No tagging necessary, just tell each other to do it. <3
It’s long, so putting the rest of the fic and reflection questions under the cut.
Stats:
Fics Posted (Gen): 6
Space Birthday (9,595 words): Hunk can feel it in his bones; it’s his birthday. He wants to have a nice one... and does... after accidentally raiding a Galra outpost with Lance and Pidge.
Pilot (4,340): Shiro finds himself in a different reality post s2. Here, the mechs are called Gundams. (Shiro in the Gundam Wing universe/reality)
Code (7,321): Pidge and the others keep fond memories of Earth through oldies musical trivia. It comes in handy on a mission.
Self Insert (6,357): Lance reads a story to his niece and nephew on the eve he leaves for school at the Galaxy Garrison. The kids have Opinions on how it should go.(i totally still need to change their names to the canon ones)
Too Soon and Not Soon Enough (1,796): Keith is 13 and is supposed to go to the Galaxy Garrison next year at Shiro’s encouragement. Until the Galra invade and plans change.
Welcome to the Neighborhood (2,237): Allura gets used to being not dead and that includes meeting her cosmic neighbors.
Fics Posted (Plance): 17
Wrong Diamond (2,384): Gentlemen thief AU. “At midnight, I will steal the heart of Voltron,” the note says. Pidge has a thief to catch.
Diamond in the Rough (8,045): prequel to Wrong Diamond. How they meet!
Road Trip (4,710): Lance and Pidge are back on Earth. Zarkon has the others and the two are on the run from a bureaucratic Galaxy Garrison that doesn’t want the world to know about aliens yet. Oh, and Lotor is with them.
Exsanguination (16,255): Pidge is a vampire hunter captured by Haggar. She finds some unlikely help in the vampire’s similarly undead servant.
Power Up! (3,500): Pidge is on the cusp of finding out where Zarkon is holding her father using less than legal methods. She’s caught in the act by her lab partner (Lance, a superhero in training).
Plance on Ice (2,300): A figure skating AU! Pidge and Lance are former competitive partners having a date free time on the ice
Being Plance (3,900): Pidge and Lance pull a personality switch prank over on the rest of the team. Canon verse.
Keeping Cool (3,098): Mermaid AU! Pidge is in trouble with pirates and gets some unexpected help from the sea.
The Cake (839): Canon verse, Lance gets a cake for his birthday and assumes it’s from Hunk.
Frostbite (6,109): Pidge is a renowned super villain. Lance is a hero in training with something to prove. Lance over uses his powers one day and Pidge has some soul searching to do.
Crystal Clear (5,516): Another superhero AU. Lance is captured by his arch nemesis. They have a heart-to-heart, taunt, and flirt.
The Secrets of Beasts (2,007): AU canon verse. Years down the road, Green keeps Pidge from going on a mission with the others. It takes Kosmo to find out why.
See You Yesterday (8,132): Lance works nervously as a bartender for a 1920s mafia when all he wanted to do was leave the farming life. One night he gets a strange patron who changes his life - and his perspective of the world. Time travel AU
Shot Through the Heart (1,087): post canon AU. Lance and Pidge keep Nadia and Sylvio entertained.
Seasons of Magic (11,744): Pidge is a mage. Lance is her dragon familiar. Series of domestic-ish one shots. Not in sequential order.
Between Rocks and A Hard Place (8,144): Canon verse. Pidge and Lance are trapped due to a caved-in mine, with pirates waiting for them on the other side. And Pidge is hurt.
Cow-parent Trapped (1,099): s8 canon continuation. Pidge visits Lance at the farm and does not expect Kaltenecker to make them talk to each other.
Lotura 1
Birthday Prompt #5 (5,500): Oh gosh I never named it. Fantasy AU in which Lotor is essentially Rapunzel and Allura is Aurora with a better (depending on who you ask) birth-prophesy. Tiny hint of Shallura in this as well.
Collaborations: 3
First Encounters for the (Altean Plance AU): Pidge is an independent noblewoman and Lance is her bodyguard. Writing done with @hushman and @pidge-suggestions
To Sail, To Break, To Earn (Plance - 10,268): Lance is a pirate and Pidge is a mermaid. There’s also a curse involved. With @sp4c3-0ddity
It’s Beginning to Look a lot Like A Christmas Carol (Plance- 14,384): post s8 canon verse with @hailqiqi and @sp4c3-0ddity. Exactly as the title says. Lance is the subject of a ghostly intervention. Crack treated seriously.
Fey AU (Plance): with @vivalachocolate this was @sp4c3-0ddity ‘s prompt to Viva but I was nosy and added a chapter and I’m so glad she wasn’t mad at me for it. 😅
Ship/Character breakdown:
Ship breakdown:
I guess the 17 Plance fics speak for themselves. I did write one Lotura fic as a special birthday prompt because @ritsykitty is such a good friend.
Character breakdown:
I have a gen fic for each Paladin, but then the Plance fics outnumber those, so Lance and Pidge would be my go to.
Characters that had the main focus:
So for character POV, each Paladin has one, then within Plance, Pidge has 12 and Lance has 7. Interesting, I thought it was more even. Hunk had a POV in a Plance fic too briefly!
Specifics:
Best/worst title?
Best title: Urgh I liked a lot of them. Too Soon and Not Soon Enough probably. I like how it summarizes the story without telling you how, but by the end you know.
Worst title: Seasons of Magic aka I tried to come up with a clever title when I realized I wasn’t done with it. It’s so bland to me. I’m also basically trying to rebrand from mage/familiar AU. I don’t think it’s working 😅 (not that I care I’m trying to make it easier to reference but I’m too late)
Best/worst last line?
Best: “I love you too, Pidge,” he [Lance] says, nestling her head to his chest and not bothering to correct her. “You’re the best nemesis a hero could ask for.” - I love that line so much, from Crystal Clear. Enemies to lovers is such a good trope.
Worst: Pidge groans. At this rate her double life is definitely doomed to unravel. - for how much I love Frostbite, I really hate how lame it ends. Like I totally could have said that better or continued the scene a bit but I am LAZY.
General questions:
Looking back, did you write more fics than you thought you would this year, less than you thought, or about what you predicted?
I wrote waaaaaaay more than expected. I figured I’d write something every few months. Now I can write a 2k fic in a setting if I’m on game.
What pairing/genre/fandom did you write that you would never have predicted last year?
I was just doing gen fic last year, never would I have expected to be so taken by Plance that it became my main muse.
What’s your favorite story this year? Not the most popular, but the one that makes you the happiest.
Honestly? Probably Pilot. It was one of my earliest VLD fic ideas to do a Gundam Wing crossover and to actually finish a one shot early in the year (when I was still dipping my feet into fandom again) just made me so so happy. I still smile thinking about the continuation possibilities. One of my favorite parts of Shiro’s character is that he is the ace pilot. Because of Keith’s role that sometimes gets overshadowed. I was so pleased to get to highlight that.
Okay, NOW your most popular story.
On Ao3, that would be Exsanguination. No surprise there, it was my first posted Plance fic and I continued it.
On Tumblr it’s First Encounters, the first of the Altean Plance AU based on the art and headcanons. I was just struck with a clear opening image one afternoon and wrote it all right then and there. I had no idea it would be so well received.
Story most underappreciated by the universe?
Space Birthday. It may have been a bit of a mess since it was my very first VLD fic, but it has everything I love. Hunk bonding with an ‘enemy’ over cooking, Team Punk, Plance in distress, Hunk saves the day thanks to mechanics. Also heartfelt stuff with Keith. And he’s the only Paladin besides Lance to get an actual birthday themed fic from me.
Story that could have been better?
I really hate to say Wrong Diamond, but I totally could have done much better with it. It feels skimpy. Probably why I am still writing in the AU.
Sexiest story?
Ha. That would be a tie between Crystal Clear and Exsanguination. The first I actually tried and the second completely by accident. I’m not sure it worked though.
Saddest story?
All my sad fics have a bit of crack to them. Pilot is pretty melancholy. Crystal Clear has a good Plance argument that gets heated. Road Trip in general though might take the cake. It’s full of angst amid some humor due to the premise.
Most fun?
Shot Through the Heart in terms of tone.
Story with single sweetest moment? Space Birthday
"Uh, Keith, hold up a tic."
Confused, Keith turned back around. "What?"
Hunk rubbed the back of his neck. "So uh, you know we're friends right? Like, I meant what I said we're like brothers. We're tight. I mean, we share a mind inside of a giant robot."
Keith blinked, clearly surprised. "Yeah, I kinda got that from the hug you gave me back then. It was nice," he said with a smile. "And we work well together."
"Yeah so - wait what? No, I'm supposed to be giving you the pep talk here."
"It's fine, Hunk. I'm doing important work and so are you. I already had this talk with Allura."
"Oh. Well, what I'm trying to say is that we're friends. I care a lot about you and your feelings. So if I say something that's weird or you don't like, you gotta tell me. I'm a terrible and nosy person and I'm sorry."
Keith stood silent, processing the words, and then smiling. "I've accepted the side of me that's Galra," he said simply. "It's still a little weird, but I've always had this feeling that something didn't add up." He smiled a bit. "I don't mind a question or two, but I'm still learning myself."
"Deal, no Galra questions for a while then. Just as long as you come visit more often, okay? We all miss you.
"...hug it out?"
Keith snorted and obliged into Hunk's waiting arms. "Always."
Hardest story to write?
I struggled with the ending to Exsanguination. It took forever to come to me.
Easiest/most fun story to write?
I wrote The Secrets of Beasts in one setting and I still can’t believe how easily it came out. I blame the Plance discord folks for putting everyone on a baby craze.
Did any stories shift your perceptions of the characters?
Not particularly? I write based on my existing understanding of the characters and nothing really surprised to that note.
Most overdue story?
Welcome to the Neighborhood. I wanted to write that Allura gen fic all year (as I wanted one for all the Paladins) and I hoped s8 would give me the motivation. It was not worth the cost.
Did you take any writing risks this year? What did you learn from them?
Collaborations! And participating in a zine! And signing up for events (exchanges and bangs)! I learned that it’s not that scary. People are chill and so easy to get along with. Also the task isn’t as daunting as I think of it’s an idea I love.
What are your fic writing goals for next year?
This is hard because I’m already doing above and beyond what I ever expected to be doing writing wise. I suppose it will be to finish my gen fic since I’ve been writing a lot of plance lately.
#rueitae#my writing#end of year ask#goals#everyone go do it its time consuming but relaxing#and really fun to look back on everything#tag me if you do it because I want to see everyones!

20 Questions Tag
I got tagged by @reinkings to do this tag game, thank you so much :3
1. Is there any scene from any piece you’ve written that actually scared you? If so, describe the scene.
Hm… I’m not really one for horror? I don’t really like watching or reading it so I haven’t really written any, either.
2. What genre do you feel most awkward writing?
Romance. I'm horrible at anything concerning flirting and stuff like that xD Horrible!
3. How many different types of writing do you write? Types of writing include novels, short stories, poetry, song lyrics, etc.
Mostly novel-length stuff, though they usually end up getting longer than just one book. Also short stories, and one-shots. I wrote poetry when I was younger (but I am probably rather bad at it). Also I never wrote a song, lyric-wise, only making up melodies etc without lyrics.
4. How old were you when you first started writing?
Writing as in writing stuff down, or storytelling? I can't remember a time when I didn't tell myself stories (out loud, until I managed to do it in my head later on). I started writing them down as soon as I could write, haha (so near the end of first grade). Most of the stories from that time are about "Feelie" ("Fee" means fairy in German...) who was, oh wonder, a fairy! And had veeery long hair. And a flying unicorn. xD The stories are kind of very cute and slightly embarassing, and very stereotypical XD Also there was Lisa, my next ... "OC". There were a lot of different iterations of her, because I never finished anything before getting a better idea and subsequently starting again from scratch XD
5. How confident are you in your writing?
Hm. Sometimes I am really sure that what I'm doing is amazing (usually when I just came up with a really mean plot twist or magic system or found the perfect solution to a plot hole) ... only that usually doesn't last very long XD I would be lying if I said that I don't care about what others think, but at the same time, I also don't? I'd love to be published one day but if it comes down to it, I'm writing for me, and only me. I feel so blessed to have found this community, and that there are others who are coming to love my characters as much as I do. But I would write these stories even if nobody were interested in them. So... I don't know, I think I'm getting better at the confidence thing :)
6. Have you ever written and posted anything that was very personal to you?
I don't think that I've ever posted anything? I write Morning Pages (sadly not as frequently as I should), which are 3 pages of stream of consciousness, first thing after getting up in the morning. It helps a lot. But it's also the sort of thing I won't ever upload anywhere cause it's deeply personal and I would feel very uncomfortable giving it to anyone. I've been thinking about uploading a cutesy (rather personal) short story, though. I wrote it for my mother as a birthday present some years ago :D
7. What inspired you to start writing?
I... have no idea? I've told myself stories before I could write, so... I have no idea. I should probably ask my mother if there was some sort of catalyst xD I didn't even start reading of my own free will until 2nd or 3rd grade, but since then I've never stopped so... xD Anyways, my father read me bedtime stories every night when I was small so maybe that? I never really watched a lot of TV until 10th grade when I discovered the mysteries of the online stream and suddenly had a lot of stuff to catch up to... and now I'm studying film xD (My parents are still confused by that because I was a kind of late bloomer concerning cinema and tv :D )
8. Which of your OCs do you relate to the most?
Uh... let's see. I think maybe Jouka? He’s from my wip firewings, and I love him a lot.
9. Have you ever written self-insert fanfiction?
Maybe not *fan*fiction but maybe self-insert fiction when I was young xD All that fairy and princess stuff... most definitely self-insert, haha.
10. What is your favorite piece you’ve ever written about?
Uhm… I haven’t written it yet? But when I’m done with Dreams and Shadows I’ll go and write Icicle Soul. It has some of my favourite characters, plot lines and plot twists in it and I’ve been looking forward to properly writing it since forever :D
11. How frequently do you actually sit down and write?
I try to write every day. It does not work. I always end up doing tag games instead because there are still so many to finish.
12. How many hours at a time do you do research on your writing?
Sometimes it escalates and I spend the whole day reading up on stuff on wikipedia and then end up source-riding until there’s no way back and I have 3000 tabs open. XD
13. Do you like to branch out in your writing or do you tend to stick to what you know?
When I was younger my stories tended to include a lot of the stuff I was interested in at the specific moment, and were influenced strongly by the things I’d read recently. Now I try to challenge myself a bit to write stuff that I’m bad at, or to use writing to explore things that I don’t really know yet :)
14. What would your antagonist of your current WIP say to you if they saw you in person?
I think that depends on if they know that I’m the writer or not xD If not I’d be far too insignificant. If yes, I would probably be subjected to a lot of threats, and curses. And assassination attempts, so they can wrangle control back.
15. Do you consider yourself your OCs’ god or just kind of a guiding hand (or other? If other, please list)?
Well. I’m not very good at being a god, I guess, since they always decide everything on their own. Or change, without me wanting them to. Or do something totally unexpected. So, I’m probably more like a guiding hand, haha.
16. What do you think you’d be doing with your time if you’d never gotten into writing?
Well, I do study 3D animation and do art, so I guess I’d be somewhat better at that because I’d have more time to practise. xD
17. Have you ever written a smut piece?
Nope. I'm very bad at romance and smut and stuff like that.
18. What was the first thing you ever wrote about?
Oooh. I remember a story about a tiger and a rabbit :D Also, the Feelie stories above… the first thing that ever got longer than a few chapters had no title and was vaguely like Eragon.
19. What is the most creative creature you’ve ever created for world-building?
Creatures are the best! Hm. The most creative creature… I don’t know, actually? They’re usually very plausible creatures because I want them to feel possible. Like, if that world really existed, it would totally make sense if the creature did, too, you know? I always think of evolution, too, and how it could have been formed by its environment and stuff like that. I have very big folders filled with that stuff :D I have bloodthirsty and very murderous unicorns in Morning Star, though, and for Dreams and Shadows there are tons of different kinds of dragons that I’ve put a lot of thought into. I have rebuilt Alearis’ ecosystem from scratch, and I just vaguely remember the horse-like creatures that exist in the world of Firewings instead of horses. Honestly, there are so many more but I have probably made more creative creatures for art-purposes.
20. Tell me one random fact about your WIP that you have yet to tell your followers.
Dreams and Shadows was born during German class in 11th grade. I had an image of a young boy in my head, standing behind his mother who was crying in front of his comatose body. It was only ever supposed to be a short story, and it was supposed to be this melancholic, sad and beautiful thing. And then I wrote it during NaNoWriMo and the original plot was done after 30,000 words but I still had 20K words left to write in order to win so Ava, his little sister, got a storyline of her own, and angels and demons entered the fray, and now Ava has somehow taken over the story and that slow, beautifully-sad thing has grown and become something else entirely :D It’s also no longer set in our world, the angels and demons have become something else, it’s one of my favourite worldbuildings yet and there are dragons! 200% better ;)
tagging: @madmooninc @romenna @asttralhell @lynnafred @authordai if you want to :D

Who was your first celebrity crush and who's the most recent one?
Hyun Bin, a Korean actor. Klay Thompson, an athlete.
What story would you like to share about your first love?
I was his first love and he was mine. He never knew I loved him, though. Back then, I was the only one whom he had his eyes on. He surely loved me and had waited for me for about four years. Most of my memories in high school were about him. But I was a man-hater for some reason and so he might have thought that for that long years of pursuing me, he didn't stand much of a chance. We were about to graduate in high school and we'd probably part ways so I decided to tell him I'd give him a chance — I was secretly falling for him anyway. It was my birthday when I came to school, ready to tell him everything but to my surprise, he and my best friend were already in a relationship that same day. Some of my friends told me that he might have done it just so he could ruin my birthday and to give a signal that he had finally given up. He had been in three succeeding relationships since then but I hadn't had one until I finished college in 2012. One of my old friends told me that he was constantly asking about me during the time I was away (I moved to Manila to study for college). I never knew that until then. I saw him just recently as I happened to be on the same public transport with him. I wasn't sure if he saw me. What I was sure of was that I had completely moved on.
What was the last thing you talked about in a deep conversation with someone?
Life. People. Relationships. Career. Self-fulfillment.
What is your biggest regret or disappointment?
When I did not enroll in any review center prior to taking the board exam. When the results were out, I saw that I lag behind top ten.
What was the most recent event that you got frustrated about?
So... I knew this person for years because he used to be the emcee in the youth fellowship I used to attend when I was in college. I was a complete stranger to him but I knew him a bit. Few months ago, I saw his instagram account by chance when I was browsing for pictures of nature (which I would spend time looking at on instagram). I browsed his gallery and I was in awe of his nature photographs. But more than that, I was captivated and moved by every caption (turned piece of writing) he had in each photo. I then hit like on each of which amazed me. Surprisingly, he sent me a follow request and a private message. He must have browsed my gallery as well because he said I had a nice ig. We went on a short conversation for a few days and then he suddenly asked me out. I was also curious about him so I did not hesitate to tell him I'd love to — firstly, because I knew he's a Christian so he won't do me any harm, and secondly, I was really interested to go out with him because I find him a perfect fit. That was actually the first time that I agreed to go out with someone I barely knew. So there... He told me one night that he was going to our place the next day and asked me to tour him around the city. I was ready and excited to meet him but then I hadn't heard from him since the night he told me he was going to visit. He obviously stood me up on that day! *insert 20 different disgruntled emojis* I didn't ask why he didn't show up. Why would I? Haha.
*What’s more frustrating is that I’m still looking forward to meeting him. LOL!*
Do you like the beach or the mountains?
I like both because I love nature. (But I prefer hiking and trekking than swimming, which I particularly dislike).
What is your biggest achievement?
I do not have much for myself. But to hear my students tell me that I am the best teacher they've ever had, I consider it as one.
Are you usually early or late?
Late. I’m not a morning person.
When people come to you for help, what do they usually want help with?
Relationships. Family problems. Personal struggles.
What’s the best way to start the day?
Pray and thank God that you’ve got to live another day.
Who has impressed you most with what they’ve accomplished?
RV. He’s my ultimate crush (for more than a decade now). He’s a DOST scholar and, I believe, a polymath. He’s good at English and Science and Math. He’s my batchmate. He’s a physics educator who’s already doing his PhD at 26. He had presented his academic papers abroad and had traveled to many places in and out of the country. (I know many things about him but he doesn’t even know I exist. LOL)
What’s the most annoying question that people ask you?
“When will you ever have a boyfriend?”
What could you give a 60-minute presentation on with absolutely no preparation?
Most topics in biology and some topics in chemistry.
What quirks do you have?
I like animals only in their cutest form; I always wish they won’t grow up lol. I hate wearing pants; it’s so uncomfortable. I've got a sense of precognition or clairvoyance or whatever that’s called as; some people (usually the ones whom I haven’t seen for ages) would cross my mind all of a sudden, with no particular reason, and shortly afterward, they either appear out of nowhere or reach out to me through SNS.
What was the best compliment you’ve received?
“Maybe there isn’t anything you can’t do well.”
Who inspires you to be better?
Jesus.
What is your biggest dream?
To be a philanthropist.
