Summary: Steve is fond of a particular barista. Bucky has a favorite customer. Let’s see where this goes!

It’s July - early morning and already hot - and the door squeaks loudly somewhere over her shoulder as she preps a fresh batch of coffee to brew. She doesn’t look up or turn around, intent on her task, but she calls a distracted “good morning”, along with her coworkers. The humid morning air has left a sticky fog on the windows and doors, on skin and clothes, and it follows them inside, in spite of the air conditioning. She’s already regretting the long-sleeved shirt she plucked from her laundry pile, though it was the only passable shirt she could find and still be in dress code.
“Hey, you got front?” Bea, her supervisor, pipes up over the headset. Her head bobs over the open door of her bar fridge, where she’s counting milk.
With a nod, she turns back around from the brewing machine, putting on her customer service smile as she sees-
“Oh, morning, Steve,” she laughs, her smile blooming genuine. “I barely heard you come in, sorry.”
“No worries,” Steve smiles. His eyes look tired, but she knows hers are as well - it’s 6:30 in the morning and they’re already into their work day. He ducks his head, leaning a hip against the front counter. “I’m quiet, I guess.”
“What can I get for you?” she asks, tapping away at the screen to open her till. “Just the americano with stevia and almond milk?”
Steve chuckles and blushes under the dark stubble on his cheeks, rubbing the back of his neck with one hand. It strains the seams of his plain white t-shirt, stretched too tight already across his broad shoulders.
“I’m predictable, huh?” his nose scrunches as he asks, and she drops her eyes back down to the screen in front of her, displaying his order as she rings it up.
“Nothing wrong with that,” she shrugs, pursing her lips in an effort to contain her smile. “Anything else for you?”
“Uh, yeah actually, can I get an iced coffee, too? With a little bit of cream?”
“Sure thing,” with a couple of swipes at the screen she’s got the order rung up. She pushes it through, prompts him to swipe his card, and glances down towards the bar, wondering where her coworkers have suddenly disappeared to.
“Well - I guess I’ll get those ready for you,” she quirks an eyebrow at him as she makes her way down towards the espresso machines, with Steve following along, separated by the counter between them. He watches, her head down, labeling a cup and pulling espresso shots, turning for a stevia packet.
“So,” he clears his throat. “How you been?”
“Oh, you know,” she shrugs. “I’m here - and it’s 6:30. And hot.”
“Yeah, yeah,” he laughs. “Tell me about it. I’m already sweating.”
“Same here!” Her face disappears as she bends down to dig in the fridge for a tetra of almond milk. “I mean, I really played myself today - wearing long sleeves. I don’t know what I was thinking.”
“Wow, rookie mistake,” Steve shakes his head.
She slides the americano out at the end of the bar, after adding a cardboard sleeve to protect against the scalding heat of the water. Their eyes meet over the drink, his fingers just slightly brushing hers even as she spins away and grabs the cup for his iced coffee. Conversation lulls; he clears his throat, takes a small sip of the drink and enjoys the slight burn on the tip of his tongue. She’s fast and smooth, never quite looking at him but never turning completely away from him; he’s in the corner of her vision and she’s the center of his. The cream swirls downward into the iced coffee, softening the color and the taste - though Steve has never been a fan of cold coffees, but he knows how Sam takes it.
“Here you go,” she holds out the iced coffee with a polite smile, plucking a straw from the caddy next to her and extending it in her other hand.
“Thank you-” he trips over whether or not to say her name; he wants to say it, and it’s written right there on her apron, offered on the tip of his tongue. He’d like to taste it. But the leap of familiarity scares him, as it has the last two months he’s been coming in here, and he swallows down the letters. Settles for an answering smile.
“Guess I’ll see ya tomorrow?” he half-jokes, coffees in hand, backing towards the door one step at a time. He watches her head bob as she ducks down to grab a rag out of her sanitizing bucket; she wrings it out and wipes down the counter, sparing him a lifted eyebrow, a sly sideways glance.
“Maybe-” she smirks, swiping an already clean spot on the counter before dropping her rag back in the bucket. “I might be off tomorrow.”
“Might be?” Steve’s head quirks to one side. “You don’t know?”
“Well…I asked someone to trade shifts with me so I could have the weekend off…” she sighs and crosses her arms. “But I haven’t heard back from her, so it’s probably not happening.” Her wry smile is accompanied by a one-shouldered shrug. “It’s just as well, though. This place would probably fall apart without me.”
“Oh, definitely,” he chuckles. “So I guess, maybe I’ll see you in the morning.”
“Have a good one, Steve!” she waves as he ducks out the door, bell jingling overhead at his departure. It really is hot today - her cheeks feel warm. Her whole body does, actually; but the cafe is quiet and empty now, the sun just rising over the buildings outside, and she gets a sip of water from the cup she keeps stashed under the front register.
“So how’s your man today?” Bea jokes over the headset. Looking over, she can see Bea’s mirthful expression peeking around the corner from the back of house where she’d been washing whip canisters.
“Yeah, when are you and Steve gonna go out?” Ally’s voice joins in the teasing, innocently sarcastic in her trademark way.
“Come on, guys,” she huffs, glad that neither of them is out front on the floor, where she was unable to hide her smile. “Steve is just a customer. He’s just another nice regular, that’s all.”
“Uh huh. That’s why you giggle every time we bring him up?”
“I do not!”
“Well, you just keep telling yourself that,” Bea smirks, banging through the back of house door with an armload of milk. “But you should know that store is taking bets on when he’ll finally ask you out.”
She chooses not to answer, just rolls her eyes and heads out the front door to set up the patio umbrellas. It’s July, early morning and already hot, but at least there’s a breeze out here - enough to cool the blazing in her cheeks even as she wrestles the umbrellas open to shade the outdoor tables. Her mind drifts away, to Steve’s easy smile and Steve’s breathtaking eyes, and the way he always dropped a dollar or two in the tip jar. Not to mention, the stretch of his white tees across those ridiculous shoulders.
Well, anyway. He is a nice regular. That’s why she enjoys him coming in every day, that’s all.

“She there today?” Sam smirks as he eagerly plunges the straw into his iced coffee, swirling the cream into its depths. He waggles his eyebrows at Steve’s flushed cheeks while he takes the first satisfying sip.
“Yes.” Steve clears his throat, keeping his eyes down on his own drink. They’re sitting in Steve’s office - well, Steve is sitting, safely behind his desk. Sam posts himself in the doorway, leaning against the frame with his feet crossed. He watches his friend’s flustered fluttering behind the desk - Steve shuffles papers, taps on the keyboard of his computer to open his email, moves his coffee to one side of the laptop and then the other.
“Well?” Sam prompts, gleefully swirling his iced coffee, listening to the ice rattle before taking another loud slurp. “You ask her out yet? Give her your number at least?”
Steve scowls up at his buddy over his laptop screen.
“Sam you don’t get it-” he huffs. “This girl…she’s - God, she’s so beautiful, Sam. You know how many guys must hit on her every day? In a town like this?” He shakes his head. “I’d just be another asshole to her; she’d file my number away with all the other guys she’s not gonna call.”
“Whatever, dude,” Sam rolls his eyes. “That’s just an excuse for you to not take a chance on it. You just gonna keep going in there early in the morning and wasting money on coffee you used to brew at home?”
Steve doesn’t dignify that particular dig with a response, instead choosing to take a large swig from his coffee - he had to admit, she made a damn good cup. Simple as it was. But he knew, as many excuses as he made, he was addicted to more than just the espresso; her sweet smile perked him up in the mornings the way caffeine just couldn’t quite cut it.
He’d been going into the cafe at the crack of dawn for at least a month now. Sam practically begged him once to go out for an iced coffee, an early morning at the end of May, and with a sigh he’d agreed, though he complained loudly about wasting money on expensive coffee shop brews when he preferred to make his own in the coffee pot sitting three feet away from his desk.
The bell dinged over the door, the sun already streaming through the windows at the early hour, summer flushing full and bright. Familiar coffee shop sounds and smells carried across the empty cafe as he strolled in, hands in his pockets, taking in the quaint tables and mismatched chairs, an overstuffed sofa invitingly empty in one corner. Cute. He shuffled towards the counter, not really looking, till he heard a voice welcoming him in and-
She turned around from the brewing machine behind her, smiling soft and brilliant, her eyes a 6 am combination of sleepy brightness, caffeine buzzing in her own veins already.
One hit. That’s all it took to get him hooked.

Her shift couldn’t have ended soon enough. The bright sun and gorgeous summer weather had her itching under her apron, aching to get outdoors in spite of the heat. Every few minutes it seemed she turned to the register to check the time, or slipped her phone from her pocket. Never quite time, never quite close enough. Until-
“Okay, if you’ll just wipe down the bar, you’re good to go,” Nat sighs as she ties her apron, looping the strings around her waist and knotting it in the front. Nat usually takes afternoon and evening shifts, so they haven’t gotten to know each other well, but there’s something about the redhead that she both likes and fears.
With a little whoop of joy, she whirls around to her bucket and grabs the rag for the last time (today at least) and wipes away the splashes of syrup, coffee, and milk that have accumulated over the course of her shift. The counter is a little sticky, but a little elbow grease dissolves the tacky syrup puddle, and with a flourish she stows her carton of coconut milk in the fridge under the counter, tosses her rag back in the bucket, and flashes a peace sign to the other baristas on the floor.
“Alright, I’m out you guys!” she calls, already tugging her apron over her head. Her tote bag hangs on a hook in the back of house, and she rolls the apron up into it before stepping over to the computer to clock out.
“Whatcha doin’ this afternoon?” Bea is off now as well, having handed off the keys to Nat, and was tucking her own apron into her backpack, her Juul sticking out of one corner of her mouth.
“Mm. It’s such a beautiful day…” she sighs. “I think I’m going to go read at that new place I like, get a cold brew, maybe sit outside.”
“Leaving this coffee shop and going to another one?” Bea laughs, taking a hit off her vape, a little cloud puffing in front of her face. She’s not supposed to have it inside the building, definitely not supposed to use it inside at least, but the current manager hasn’t quite worked up the nerve to tell her to stop, so she carries on as she pleases.
“Gotta support local business.” She swings her tote bag up on her shoulder, regretting her habit of stuffing it so full that it’s uncomfortably heavy, and then she’s on her way out the door. “See ya later!”
Besides being a proud supporter of local businesses, she’s also totally addicted to the Garage - the other café and pub she frequents whenever she gets the chance. Their cold brew? Smooth and chocolatey. Their patio? Perfectly shaded and comfortable. Their vibe? Grunge-y without being dirty, hipster without being pretentious. She’d loved it from the first moment she stepped inside on her afternoon off, looking for an iced drink and a cozy spot that wasn’t her own home. What she found? A near-perfect coffee shop with amazing sweet potato fries.
“Oh, hey welcome in!”
Well. And there’s that, too.
“Hi, Bucky - how’s it going?” she smiles at the barista and bartender behind the counter, who is currently stocking the pastry case with an assortment of mouthwatering scones. His hair is swept up in its usual bun, and his mechanic’s shirt is tucked into a pair of black jeans, the short sleeves rolled over his biceps to reveal one flesh arm bearing a full sleeve of tattoos, and one gleaming polished prosthetic.
“Oh, it’s going,” he shrugs, a little bashful. He wills his eyes back down the the pastries at hand, though it’s hard with the way she smiles, hands in the back pockets of her shorts as she approaches the counter.
“Been busy today?” she asks, giving the menu a customary glance, though she’s too far gone on their cold brew to ever order anything else.
“Not too bad, no,” he shakes his head, sliding the glass panel behind the pastry case shut and tossing paper box from the bakery in the trash bin. “Little bit of a rush earlier around lunch, but nothing like what you guys get in the mornings.”
“Oof, for your sake I hope not,” she shudders. “The morning rush is wild, you’ve got no idea.”
“Oh, I’ve got some idea, I’ve seen that drive thru line,” he smirks, leaning his elbows on the counter. Unconsciously she takes a step closer, leaning against the other side of the wood, a mere couple of feet between them.
“I’m literally triggered by the words ‘drive thru’,” she says, with an exaggerated eye twitch that makes him laugh.
“Alright, alright, I won’t bring it up again, my bad,” he raises his hands in supplication, an almost prayer, watching her nose wrinkle and rearrange the pattern of the freckles there.
“Well, anyways, can I get a cold brew, please?” she sighs, looking at him under her lashes.
“You got it,” he nods, tapping the counter. “Perfect day for it, too.” They both glance out the wide front windows of the café, where the patio furniture is arranged under a well-shaded awning strung with criss-crossed globe lights. In the midsummer afternoon, it’s a perfect place to be lazy in public, to sip a drink and read, to pretend to be the sort of person who gets to do those things in the middle of the day.
“It is,” she sighs, looking wistfully at the patio.
“You can go on and get a seat,” he lowers his voice as a couple new customers shuffle into the café. “I’ll bring it out to you.”
“Oh, you sure?” She glances around, noticing that he seems to be the only staff member here. Their shop is laughably less busy than hers, able to survive on a single barista for any length of time during the day, but she still doesn’t want to make more work for him. “I don’t mind waiting.”
“Nah, it’s no problem,” he smiles, dimpling his scruffy cheeks. “I’ll have it out in a minute.”
She’s back out the door and at her favorite table; he can see her from his place behind the bar, with her feet tucked up on the sturdy outdoor ottoman, her bag stuffed under her chair and book already cracked open in her lap. She’s not looking at the page, though - the beautiful day seems to distract her, as she lifts her face into the breeze and stretches her legs out further across the ottoman, spreading out to catch even more of the sunlight.
Wanda hip checks him as she breezes through from the kitchen, having come in through the back door.
“Your girl here today?” she teases, raising one brow suggestively. Bucky scowls at her, embarrassed and flustered and a little guilty.
“She’s not my girl, Wanda,” he corrects her. “She’s just a customer.”
“Pretty regular customer,” Wanda shrugs.
“Doesn’t mean anything. We’ve got plenty of regulars.”
“No other regulars that you look at like that.”
He doesn’t respond. Turning his back on her, he takes a straw from the condiment bar and grabs the cup of cold brew he just poured, and stalks around the counter towards the door.
Wanda stands in the kitchen door, a bin full of dirty dishes under her arm, and watches as he crosses the patio, tucking one hair behind his ear and smiling at the sweet girl with the book in her lap. The girl smiles back, squinting in the bright summer sun, and laughs at something Bucky says, while Buck ducks his head and shoves his hands in his front pockets. He lingers, lingers far longer than required for delivering a single cup of cold brew.
Yeah, sure. She’s just a regular, alright.

D R A M
The title of this post is actually what I named the Word doc that I wrote this up in.  This write takes place in an AU inspired by a post that said something along the lines of “supervillain winds up marrying the ex-spouse of their superhero archnemesis”.  I saw that post and was like “time to make another version of the Superhero/villain AU”.  So here you go.

              Stan slid into his regular stool at the bar. At the sound of soft muttering, he looked over.  He raised an eyebrow.  Normally, no one sat next to his stool.  But today, a young woman sat there, staring morosely at her drink and mumbling something.
              “Hey, hot stuff,” he said cheerfully, leaning in. She held up a hand.  Light glinted off the golden band around her ring finger.
              “I’m married,” she said dully.
              “You don’t sound too happy about it,” Stan remarked. She glared at him.  “I call it like I see it, toots.”
              “Don’t call me ‘toots’,” she snapped.
              “Fine.  What should I call you, then?”
              “By my name.”
              “Which would be…?”
              “…Angie.”
              “Angie.”  Stan held out a hand.  “I’m Stan.” Angie shook the offered hand. “So, what brings a troubled wife to my favorite dive?”
              “My dick of a husband,” Angie groused.  She slumped over the bar.  “I swear…some days he acts like a completely dif’rent man than the one I married.”  Tears shone in her voice, along with a distinct southern accent.  She picked up her drink and pulled on the straw.  It rattled in the ice at the bottom of the otherwise empty glass.  “And I’m all out.”
              “I’ll cover it.  What’s your drink?”
              “Long Island iced tea.”
              “Oof.  Maybe I shouldn’t get you a second one of those.  Those are a bad decision in a glass.”  Angie straightened, her eyes boring into Stan’s.
              “I can handle my liquor, sir.  I bet I can handle it better ‘n you can,” she snarled. Stan held his hands up.
              “Okay, okay, I believe you.  Man, you’ve got claws, don’t you?”
              “Maybe.”
              “Heh.  I like a woman with a bit of fight in her.”  Stan winked.
              “Still married.”
              “To that dick?  Why?”
              “He treats me right,” Angie mumbled into her drink. “…Sometimes.”
              “Sometimes?  What about the rest of the time?”
              “He tries to get me to quit my job and be a housewife.”
              “Why?”
              “If I knew, I’d tell ya,” Angie said with a shrug. She tapped the rim of her glass. “So, about that drink…?”
              “Hey, barkeep?” Stan called, flagging down the bartender.  Out of the corner of his eye, he saw one corner of Angie’s mouth turn up, into a ghost of a smile.

              Stan had just about finished putting his boots on when his favorite coworker, Undertow, stormed into the locker room.  He watched with a raised eyebrow as Undertow tore open his locker, muttering under his breath.
              “You’re in a mood today,” Stan commented.  Undertow sighed.  He looked back at Stan.  The crew’s general policy was to keep masks on at all times in HQ, since there were some new heroes with telepathy who might be able to take a peek at a villain’s memories.  Undertow’s outfit had a full cowl, rather than a domino mask like Stan’s, but even partially obscured, he had one of the most expressive faces Stan had ever seen. And at the moment, Undertow’s expression was frustrated and saddened.
              “I thought she was fin’ly goin’ to leave him,” Undertow said.  Stan’s second eyebrow raised to join his first.
              He’s pretty damn upset.  Normally, he keeps that accent in check.
              “Who?” Stan asked.
              “My sister.”
              “You have a sister?”
              “Two.”  Undertow sat on the bench next to Stan.  “But the one I’m speakin’ of is my twin sister.”  Stan racked his brain for any hints about Undertow’s background.  As someone without villainous family connections, he wasn’t privy to information that some of his coworkers had.  But he remembered hearing once that Undertow came from a long line of villains.
              “Is she…in the trade?” Stan asked.  Undertow shook his head.
              “No.  When we were younger, she wanted to be.  But she decided not to, when she started datin’ the feller what became her husband.” Undertow scowled.  “Her husband’s a real piece of shit.”
              “Did he prevent her from being a villain?”
              “Nah.  He don’t know ‘bout our fam’ly bein’ full of villains.  But he’s on the straight ‘n narrow, and wouldn’t have liked his wife to be breakin’ the law.”  Undertow sighed heavily.  “As it is, he don’t really like his wife doin’ much of anything.  Which is why my sister needs to dump his sorry ass.”  Undertow rubbed his face.  “And I thought she was goin’ to do it this time.  But she didn’t.”
              “What happened?”
              “They had another argument about how he wants her to start poppin’ out kids.  She don’t want to yet, ‘cause she feels like takin’ maternity leave right now would cripple her career trajectory.  And his response was that she won’t need maternity leave, ‘cause she can just quit her job.  He keeps pushin’ that issue over ‘n over.  He don’t like her workin’.”
              “Sounds like a douche.”
              “He is!  And after that fight, she came to my house fer a shoulder to cry on.  I did my best to sway her, but she still went back to him once she’d calmed down.”  Undertow groaned loudly.  “Honestly, at this point, I can’t think of a single thing that’d get her to leave him.”
              “Maybe I should make a pass at her,” Stan joked. Undertow snorted.
              “I wouldn’t be opposed to that.  You’d be better fer her than what she’s got right now.”

              Stan went to the bar every night, hoping to see Angie again, but it took a month before she showed up.  This time, she arrived after he did, visibly in tears. She made her way to the stool next to Stan’s and sat down.  Faint breezes danced around her, kicking up her caramel-colored hair.
              Is…is she a super?  I knew she was something special.  Stan wordlessly slid her his whisky, which she downed in one swallow. He winced.
              “Your husband again?” he asked.  Angie nodded morosely.  “Well, at least he lasted a month before he pissed you off enough to make you drown your sorrows.”
              “Nah, I just went to my brother’s last time,” Angie said hoarsely.  “He’s got real moonshine, and I wanted somethin’ strong.”
              “If your brother’s got hooch, why are you coming here?” Stan asked.  Angie slid Stan’s empty tumbler back to him, determinedly avoiding eye contact.
              “I…wanted to talk to you.”
              “…Really?”
              “Yes.”
              “Look, lady, I’m not a marriage counselor.”
              “I know.  But you don’t have an agenda.  My brother does.  My whole fam’ly does, all my friends do.  All they say is ‘leave him’.”  Angie met Stan’s gaze.  Her eyes were a bright, brilliant blue, swimming in tears.  “I just need someone to listen.”
              “I can do that, but you’re gonna have to pay for another whiskey for me first,” Stan said.  Angie managed a watery chuckle.
              “Fine.”  Angie waved over the bartender and ordered herself a Long Island iced tea and another whiskey for Stan.
              “All right,” Stan said once his drink was in hand. “What’s going on?”
              “My ma became a stay-at-home mother when I was a tot.  She kept house and raised six kids-”  Stan coughed roughly.
              “Six kids?” he croaked.  Angie nodded.  “What the-”
              “We’re Catholic.”
              “Ah, okay.  Carry on.”
              “Props to her.  It’s a rough job to have, and I don’t look down on it.”  Angie slammed her hands against the counter.  A wind picked up, rattling the old beer advertisements on the wall.  “But it ain’t fer me!”
              “Lemme guess.  Your husband wants you to be a stay-at-home mom.”
              “Yes.  Which I knew. But this time- this time, he brought my ma into it!  Told me that I’d be good at it ‘cause my ma clearly was.  I just-”  Angie gestured wordlessly.  “How- how could he think that’s a compliment?”
              “Probably ‘cause he’s so dead set on you doing that,” Stan said with a shrug.  “He’s already decided you’ll do it, so he’s already started complimenting you on it.”
              “…That makes sense,” Angie said softly.  She groaned loudly.  “Why is he like this?”  Stan shrugged.  “I want to stay with him, to get him to change his mind-”
              “That’s not your job.  Your job is-”  Stan frowned. “Wait, what do you do?”
              “I’m a zookeeper.”
              “Your job is to keep zoos,” Stan said.  Angie furrowed her brow, like she couldn’t decide whether she was amused by Stan’s phrasing or not.  “Not to drag your husband out of the fifties.”
              “But I’m his wife.”
              “And?”
              “I’m s’pposed to help him change.”
              “What if he doesn’t want to change?” Stan asked. “What do you do then?”  The winds that had entered the bar with Angie abruptly died down.
              “…Yer right.”
              “I am?”
              “He don’t want to change.  He don’t want to listen to me.  I can’t force it, I shouldn’t have even tried.”  Angie dropped a twenty-dollar bill on the counter and stood to leave.
              “Hey, uh wait-” Stan started.  Angie looked at him.
              “Yes?”
              “I, uh, I never got your last name.”
              “It’s Hillcrest.”  Angie slid her wedding ring off and tucked it into the pocket of her jeans. “But not fer long.”  She paused for a moment, watching Stan, then leaned in and placed a gentle peck on his cheek.  With that, she left the bar.
              Stan stared at the door long after she had gone, his mind running a mile a minute.
              Did I just get her to break up with her husband?

              Stan walked out of the shower and headed for his locker to get dressed in his civvies.  After he had his pants on, Undertow entered the locker room and went for his locker as well.
              “Hey,” Stan said.  Undertow grunted.  “Is it your sister’s husband again?”
              “Hmm?”  Undertow turned around.  “Oh, no, she finally dumped him.”
              “Really?  Good for her.”
              “Yeah.  But she’s got a new beau, and she insisted on dinner with him tonight.”  Undertow sighed.  “I’m not looking forward to it.”
              “Is he a dick, too?”
              “Don’t know.  Haven’t met him.”
              “Ah.  I get it. You don’t wanna meet your sister’s new man just yet.”
              “No, I do not.”
              “Well, if it makes you feel any better, I’m not looking forward to dinner tonight, either,” Stan said, slipping on his T-shirt. “I’m meeting my girlfriend’s brother for the first time.”
              “Oof.”  Undertow looked at him sympathetically.  “Don’t worry too much, Flamethrower.  You’re a great guy.”
              “Thanks, but I dunno if her brother’s gonna think that. My girlfriend says he can be a bit tough.”  Undertow walked over to Stan and clapped a hand on his shoulder reassuringly.
              “I’m sure it’ll go great.”
              “Hopefully,” Stan muttered.  Undertow smiled at him.
              “If her brother doesn’t like you, he’s a damn fool.”

              Stan walked up to the address Angie had given him. When she divorced her ex-husband, she had moved in with her twin brother, Lute.  Apparently, Lute was thrilled to have her with him again.
              I get it, though.  That twin bond is strong.  Stan stopped in front of the door.  He took a deep breath and knocked.
              “Comin’!” Angie called.  Stan felt some of his nerves disperse at the sound of her voice. The door opened, revealing the beaming face of his girlfriend.  “Stanley!” She stood on her tiptoes to kiss him. “Thank you so much fer agreein’ to this.”
              “You said it’s important, so…”
              “It is,” Angie said softly.  “It really is.”  Her eyes lit up.  “Oh! And, um, remember how ya told me that yer not exactly…on the side of the law?” she said, her voice low.  Stan nodded.  Telling Angie he was a villain had been nerve wracking, but she had proven herself once again to be the best possible girlfriend and taken it in stride. “Well, the reason I took it so well is ‘cause I have a lot of fam’ly members who ‘re in the same career.”
              “Wait, really?”
              “Yep!  Lute’s one of ‘em.  If things go well tonight, I can prob’ly convince him to put a good word in fer ya, get ya moved up in the ranks a bit.”
              “You really think so?” Stan asked eagerly. Angie nodded.  “That would be awesome, Ang.”
              “Just be charmin’, okay?”  Angie messed with his shirt.  “But that shouldn’t be a problem.”
              “Hey, Angie, the oven just beeped!” a voice shouted. Stan’s head whipped up.
              That almost sounded like Undertow.
              “All right, I’ll come take care of it,” Angie called back.  She kissed Stan on the cheek.  “Come on in and take a seat in the livin’ room.”
              “You got it.”  Stan kissed the top of her head and entered the house, following the hallway until he arrived at a cozy living room.  He took a seat on the brown couch.  Shortly after, a young man that looked eerily similar to Angie entered, holding a glass of water, and took a seat next to him.
              “So, um…” the man said.  He cleared his throat.  “Yer Stan?”
              “Yeah.  I’m guessing you’re Lute?”
              “Yessir.”
              “Nice to meet you,” Stan said, holding out a hand. Lute shook it, visibly reluctant. “Angie speaks pretty highly of you.”
              “She does the same fer you.”  Lute cleared his throat again.  “What do you do?”
              “I sell used cars.”
              “Used cars?”
              “Yeah.”  Stan shrugged.  “It’s just to make some dough while I work on my passion projects.”  Lute eyed Stan with interest.  Much like when he had heard Lute’s voice earlier, Stan was reminded of Undertow.  Something about the look in Lute’s gray eyes was eerily familiar.
              “Passion projects?  Like what?”
              “Oh, uh, I’m keeping them to myself until they work out,” Stan said.
              Don’t wanna spill just yet that I want to become a villain full-time.
              “Ah.”  Lute seemed disappointed.  He looked down at his glass of water.  After a moment, he spoke again.  “You a super?”
              “Yeah.  You?” Stan asked without thinking.  He fought back a wince.
              Angie just told you he was a villain, of course he’s a super, you dumbass.  Lute smirked. The water in his glass shot up, hovered as a sphere for a split second, then zipped around the room before returning to his glass.  Stan’s jaw dropped.
              “Whattaya think?” Lute asked snidely.
              “…I think you’re a super,” Stan said.
              Shit, it is Undertow!  How did I wind up dating my coworker’s twin sister without realizing it?
              “Yup.”  Lute winked. “Better yet, I’m a mask.  Give ya twenty bucks if ya can guess who.”
              “Lute!” Angie scolded from the kitchen.  Lute groaned.
              “Fine, I’ll drop it.”  Before Stan could think of what to do with the information that Lute was Undertow, the villain in question spoke again.  “So, ya sell used cars.  What’s yer education like?”
              “Uh, high school.”
              “That’s it?” Lute asked.  Stan nodded.  Lute frowned. “My sister has a-”
              “Doctorate in herpetology, I know,” Stan said.
              “And you don’t think it’s odd at all that someone so educated is with someone who only graduated high school?” Lute pressed. Stan shrugged.
              “It just means that she’s smart enough for the both of us,” he said airily.  Lute froze. His eyes began to frantically search Stan’s face.
              “…What did ya just say?” he whispered.
              “That Angie’s smart enough for both of us,” Stan said.  A memory abruptly surfaced of a conversation he’d had with Undertow a few days ago. He had mentioned his relationship, as well as the discrepancy between his education and his girlfriend’s.  And Undertow had simply replied that Stan’s girlfriend would have to be smart enough for the both of them, then.
              “Hmm.”  Lute leaned back, still staring at Stan.  “Say, yer a super, right?  What kind?” In lieu of a verbal response, Stan snapped his fingers.  A flame burst to life on his fingertips.
              “Whattaya think?”
              “Flamethrower,” Lute whispered.  Stan extinguished the flame.
              “Undertow.”
              “Yer- I-”  Lute dragged his hands down his face.  “Consarnit!”
              “Yeah, I gotta admit, finding out that my girlfriend’s twin is my favorite coworker is pretty weird,” Stan confessed.  Lute groaned.  “But you seem to be taking this way harder than you should be.”
              “It’s just- yer my fav’rite coworker, too.”
              “You make that sound like it’s a problem.”
              “It is.  I like ya, Stan, which is goin’ to make it difficult to be hard on ya.”
              “Wait, what?” Stan asked.  Lute sighed.
              “I have to be hard on ya to make sure yer all right fer my sister.”
              “What?  Come on, man!”
              “My sister just got out of a bad relationship. I don’t want her to wind up in another one right off the bat.”
              “You know me.  I’m a good guy.  I treat Angie right.”
              “That’s what I thought ‘bout Max,” Lute said softly. “Hell, we’d been friends since we were in diapers.  I thought he was a decent sort.  So when he ‘n Angie started datin’ in high school, I didn’t bat an eye.  I should’ve.  If I had, maybe I could’ve stopped Angie from needin’ a divorce.”
              “Lute.”  Stan and Lute looked up.  Angie had entered the living room.  She crossed over to Lute, knelt in front of him, and placed a hand on one of his knees. “Don’t blame yourself.  The only person to blame is me.  I should’ve left the minute he became a hero, and I was goin’ to have to abandon the dream of followin’ the fam’ly tradition.  But I stayed.  Even when he started raggin’ on me ‘bout how I needed to be a more traditional wife.”
              “You were in a toxic relationship,” Lute said softly.  “Yer not to blame.”
              “The only person to blame here is your dick of an ex-husband,” Stan said.  Angie and Lute looked over.  “Lute’s right, Angie.  It’s difficult to leave a toxic relationship.  My mom’s proof of that.  But Angie’s right, too, Lute.  It’s not your fault, either.  Sometimes…sometimes people start out good, but then they get worse.  Even if you had been hard on Max when he started dating Angie, things still could have played out the way they did.”
              “Yeah,” Lute said.  He sighed.  “Yer right, Stan.  We should be blamin’ Max, not ourselves.  Especially since he’s apparently a hero.”  Lute directed the statement at Angie, who paled.  “Banjolina, what’s that about?”
              “Banjolina?” Stan mumbled.
              “I didn’t share information either way,” Angie said tartly, getting to her feet.  “I ain’t a snitch.”
              “Ya won’t be tellin’ us what his hero name is, then?” Lute asked.  Angie shook her head.  “Hmph. Guess we’ll just have to figure it out on our own.”
              “Speaking of secret identities,” Stan said, “why didn’t you warn us that we already knew each other?”  Angie grinned.
              “I might not have ever gotten into the villainy game, but that don’t mean I ignore the chance to stir up some mischief.” Something in the kitchen beeped.  “Oh, I’ve got to get that.”  She rushed back into the kitchen.
              “Given what ya just said and what I already knew about you,” Lute said slowly, “I’ll drop the protective big brother speech.” Stan leaned back.
              “Cool.  I mean, no offense, but you’re not as intimidating as you think you are,” Stan replied.  Lute rolled his eyes.
              “Whatever.”  He leaned closer to Stan.  “Between the two of us, I think we could figure out which hero it is what broke Angie’s heart and trapped her in a bad relationship fer years on end.”  Stan nodded.
              “I agree.  That motherfucker needs to get a firm ass-kicking.”

Disclaimer: This is all in good fun! I wanted to do a really nitpicky re-watch of the series and found some really cool and interesting things I didn’t notice before. This is meant to have a Cinema Sins-esque tone. However, I did take off a lot more sins than Cinema Sins would have because I do genuinely like the series and the people that made it possible. So all of the good things got one sin off and all the bad things got one sin added. This is a really long post, so grab some popcorn. If there’s anything that I missed, feel free to add it!
I would also like to add that normally you wouldn’t watch a show this way. I am purposefully looking for mistakes, easter eggs, and other things that we’re not supposed to notice. I am watching not with the goal of entertainment, but for analysis. So most of the things that I sin, I am seeing for the first time.
Also, no I can’t do better. I am in no way qualified to give this level of criticism about anything. 
[Today we got the s2 release date!! I am so excited. To answer any questions about that, I will probably do a season 2 version of this a year after it comes out. Since some of my sins involve fandom and any fic tropes/theories we might come up with, I want to make sure that has time to happen.]
The Day that Wasn’t 
Only Dave notices Klaus coming to Vietnam via briefcase. The flashing blue lights and loud “oof!” isn’t loud enough to wake anyone else up. +1
Cody Ray Thompson’s workout routine. -1
“Katz” isn’t a fandom thing! The dude that is yelling at all the soldiers and Klaus to get ready (some sort of commanding officer?) calls Dave “Katz”! -1
Klaus is so confused that he just puts the pants on without really questioning it. What the fuck was going on in Klaus’s head? +1
Where is Ben? +1
Right where I’m paused Klaus’s face is hilarious. “It was at this moment Klaus knew. He fucked up” -1
The Power of Boners is what keeps Klaus in the fucking Vietnam War. +1
For all future Dave sins, I am calling it The Power of Boners because Dave gets one line. As soon as the show corrects this and shows us why Dave was so wonderful, these remain sins. Sin for the show for not providing more Dave content. +1
Overly saturated forigen country cliche. +1
Seriously, why is Vietnam so orange? +1
The Doors. -1
This one shot in the foreground of the girl with white boots. I want those boots so badly. Costume people, where did you get them? Sin until I know, damnit! +1

Or any other indication that Dave and Klaus didn’t just make out once and decided to remain friends. Please give me more Klave content show. If anything, just to flesh out this character who motivates Klaus for half of the season. +1
Luther barges in on people in the bathroom. He has six siblings! Anyone with at least one sibling knows that barging in on people in bathrooms is a shitty move. Heh, shitty move, bathroom, get it? +1
Klaus’s face when Luther deadpans “the world’s ending in three days”. It’s the face of someone who completely forgot about that since he’s been in the 60s for ten months. -1
Also, the way Luther tells Klaus “the world’s ending in three days” is the same way I might tell my brother that it’s time for dinner. +1
“Five’s a little- [coo coo whistle]” Emmy Raver-Lampman kills this line. -1
Luther’s face when Allison asks “what did Five even see?” brings me so much joy. That is the look of complete panic. Love that. -1
Luther can’t lie for shit. Checks out. -1
Anyone with siblings can relate to Diego, Allison, and Klaus’s reaction to this bull. -1
The dramatic music leading into the little “we died” followed by a sip of coffee. Priceless. -1
Title umbrella scares the shit out of Klaus! -1
Comic power foreshadowing? Sin until we get answers. +1
Foreshadowing that Five is in HQ by sending orders that don’t follow the same format as the rest of the ones on the shoe. Fiveshaddowing? -1
Kate Walsh plays an excellent villain. Part of that evil demeanor is getting all up in Five’s personal bubble. This is the closest Five has been to someone in the entire show without any injury or being drunk. -1
The Handler is creepy. +2
Five makes demands after setting foot in the building for less than one minute. +1
The masks from the comics are on the wall in the briefcase room. -1
Based on the two agents we see in the briefcase room and Hazel and Cha Cha, the uniform of the commission assassin is a blue suit, yet all of Five’s are grey or black like management. Inconsistency. +1
Typewriters. I hate those things. +1
I think Aidan Gallagher forgot what he was doing in this scene. His expression doesn’t look like Five, it looks like some kid who is letting a math lecture wash over them. You could make the argument that Five is sort of letting this wash over him too, but I would call bullshit. Five knows how dangerous of a situation he’s in right now. He shouldn’t look this calm. +1
The Handler touching Five’s face. +3
Dot has the “i’m in danger” expression when meeting Five because Dot let Five live in hell for 45 years. Five also looks like he wants to kill her. Great acting, Patrice Goodman. -1
Five’s expression when Dot says “No hard feelings” brings me so much joy. And fear. -1
The Handler makes Five the teacher’s pet on his first day by calling him leadership material in front of his new coworkers. +1
Kate Walsh was temporarily directed by Tim Burton for this scene. +1
That weird look one of the commission management people gives Five once Five sits down and starts working. I don’t like it, I don’t like it! +1
The Hargreeves mansion looks really fucking chaotic on the roof. I don’t like it. +1
Leonard’s face at finally being allowed inside the Hargreeves mansion. Just the right dose of satisfied and creepy. Well done, John Magaro. -1
Leonard is raising so many red flags that he may as well be a stop sign. +1
Umbrella Academy action figures. Oh, Reggie. +1
Luther has to explain that everyone in the whole world dies and not just them. The Umbrella Academy School of Delayed Reactions due to Stupidity was too long of a name so Reggie shortened it to The Umbrella Academy. +1
Allison’s right, Vanya isn’t being fair. However, Allison isn’t specific about how Vanya is family but Leonard is not. Sin for both of them for being dumb as hell. +2
“I’m gonna go find Vanya” “There isn’t time, we need to figure out what causes the apocalypse” irony. +1
“Nuclear war” cited as one of the possible causes of the apocalypse. Comics fans, enjoy this sin off. -1
“But I’m thinking this is about the Moon, right?” well yeah, but not for the reasons you think. Foreshadowing the moon. -1
That creepy portrait of Five behind Diego. No, not the big one, the other one by the bar. What the fuck, Reggie? +1
Leonard steals the action figure of The Monocle (reggie for those who don’t know the comics), which symbolizes the way Leonard feels he is controlling the Academy through Vanya. -1

Ben doesn’t realize that Klaus is going through withdrawal despite seeing it the day before. Sure, Ben could have been more focused on the tourture, but because Ben points out Klaus’s withdrawal by name in Man on the Moon, we can assume he noticed and that this is a continuity error. +1
Vanya’s powers affecting the world around her as soon as she is a safe distance away from the academy because reasons. Seriously, there should have been at least something while she was confronting her siblings. Show plays fast and loose with the rules of Vanya’s powers. +1
“If you tie me up after.” “Come again?” Diego and Klaus have the most sibling like relationship on this entire show. -1
Klaus’s Diego impression. -1
Excessive use of the word “bro”. One sin for every time I have to hear it in this scene. +2
“Mr. Five”. Is Five’s first name “Number” or did he not give the Commission any other name? Does this imply that he doesn’t go by Five Hargreeves? +1
This is one of the few scenes where Aidan Gallagher no longer looks like Aidan Gallagher and instead looks like Five. Acting. -1
Dot is really trying to get murdered. Don’t engage the man you put through hell for almost fifty years, moron. +1
The Handler has nothing better to do than to stalk Five. Does this lady have a job or did she take the day off specifically for this? What was she doing in the tube room?+1
The origin of “deadly little thing” is fucking Gloria? Really, fandom? +1
Five is too good of an actor. I understand why Aidan Gallagher might make some of these choices as an actor but I don’t understand how a man who grew up alone in the apocalypse can act this well. +1

Also, I’m kind of bored with this episode at this point. It’s such a low episode with the only interesting parts that make me as excited as the last episode Number Five, being the Commission parts. Everything else is kind of boring. Pick up the pace, show. +1
Reggie is a dick to Luther. +7
Luther looks so lost and broken and sad. I’m sad. Fuck you, Reggie. +1
Why the fuck was Luther carrying an axe?? +2

“He was kind and strong and vulnerable and beautiful” that’s great, show. Why don’t you show us that instead of having Klaus say it. Just once scene where Dave shows these qualities so that he’s a real person instead of someone created to drive Klaus’s storyline? Please? +1
I feel really bad for Ben in this scene. From Ben’s perspective, he wasn’t good enough to motivate Klaus to get sober, but this random guy was. Ben angst. +1
Also, Justin Min manages to convey this without any lines. Major props. That takes some serious skill. -2

I can’t tell if this is Ben walking away or if this is the transition between Diego and Klaus’s point of views. If this is meant to imply the pov switch, It would have been easier to have Ben disappear from the same spot. If it’s Ben walking away because he can’t take being told that he isn’t good enough to get sober for, Ben angst. Either way, it’s a sin. +1
“Aww shit! I need to pee.” Diego’s expression is amazing. -1
“If this [having powers] is even true, everything I know about myself would be different.” That is Vanya’s storyline in a nutshell. This line is really underrated. -1
All of Leonard’s lines point towards the book. All of them. Which makes total sense. -1
Vanya is starting to show more sass and personality because the pills are gone. I wish fanfic writers would explore this. Including myself, I am sinning fanfic writers for not taking into account how cool Vanya is without the meds. +1
“I’m sorry you got stuck with the ordinary one” See! +1
“Ordinary” This word keeps coming up. Probably because of the whole rumor situation that we’re not supposed to know about yet. Rewatches are fun. -1
“My life is so weird” “I like weird”. And if you weren’t such a colossal creep, Leonard/Harold, I would like you too. This line is super sweet. Sin for manipulation. +1
Ellen Page isn’t my girlfriend. Have you seen this scene recently? She looks so cute/hot/beautiful here. +1
No transition, just straight from Leonard and Vanya kissing to The Handler slurping her smoothie. It’s jarring. +1
I want to know why they decided that killing Archduke Ferdinand would start World War I. Noodle incident. +1
“I had a bad Twinkie in the apocalypse once. Kinda put me off desserts.” Yet you still ate the fluffernutter sandwich, Five? +1
The Handler’s office is really cool. Once again, set designers you win this one. -1
Why would Five go straight for a decade instead of a flavor? How does something taste like the 1950s before it tastes like a popular candy from the time for example? +1
The suit is blue like the rest of the time travel assassins have. This suggests a uniform that the Commission didn’t make Five wear before, and suggests a sort of power play. Details. -1
The Handler is a fucking creep. +1
“M26 grenades from the Vietnam war”. This is the comment that sparked the theory that the Commission killed Dave. I want answers. +1
The candy that tastes like the 50s is really chewy. Why is Five still chewing it? +1
The Handler gives Five a pistol and he doesn’t immediately shoot her, which suggests that the pistol is empty. So why was the grenade still operational if the other weapons were not? You would think she would make sure that the grenades couldn’t be used against her. +1
The Handler is a fucking creep. I think Aidan Gallagher was a little uncomfortable in this scene. The look in his eyes isn’t something you can fake. +1
Kate Walsh is an awesome actress. -1
Out of all the candies in the bowl, Five conveniently takes one that is an actual candy and one that is a tracker. +1
So I want to talk about Luther. I think the show did him a great disservice by setting up his story this way. Compared to the Commission stuff, Luther’s story arc doesn’t seem important, hence the “Dad sent me to the Moon” jokes. If this was in a better order, then maybe the fandom would like Luther more. Not that I know what that order should have been, but it definitely shouldn’t have been this one. This whole episode seems kind of disorganized and Luther’s character suffers for it. After this sin, I’m going to shut up about it, so I’ll just add a few and move on. +5
“Four years of my life. A lie” “What an asshole” That’s a bit of an understatement, Allison. Seriously, this Moon research has got to have some value to it. Luther was studying the moon for four fucking years. Who knows what kind of crazy shit he could have found out about the moon’s atmosphere and what the Earth was like when the moon split from it. Those soil samples would tell us a lot about what the developing planet Earth was like. Luther’s moon research is important scientific material. And Reggie just locked it away. +3
This scene is excellent independently. Tom Hopper and Emmy Raver-Lampman play off each other extremely well. -1
“Can I show you something?” +1

This is a really human moment for Cha Cha. Burning the note shows that deep down, she cares about Hazel. -1
However, I don’t understand why she’s so pissed about Agnes. Is the show trying to ship Hazel and Cha Cha? Because that would be a stretch and I really don’t see it. +1
Klaus asking for one last hit is believable. Diego’s reaction is really good too. Well done. -1

The wound on Dave’s chest has to be an exit wound. He was behind the barrier, so there’s no way he could have been shot from the front by the enemy. Someone (like a Commission agent) shot him from the back. So I guess we sort of got answers? I’m going to sin this until we know for sure. +1

Why is the chandelier still on the ground? You would think somebody would have attempted to pick that up at this point, right? It’s been two days. +1
Grace’s more relaxed hairstyle shows that she isn’t under Reggie’s strict control anymore. The tight pin curls are now replaced by gorgeous waves. Symbolism, well done hair stylist. -1
Grace lies because Pogo is standing behind Diego. Otherwise, I think she would have told him the truth right then and there. Secrets. +1

Also, it was bright daylight when Diego was talking to Grace and now it’s pitch black out. What happened in those hours? +1
Talking about their regrets, Allison says “we can’t go back”. Insert every season 2 headcanon and the whole “Where are they?” tag line from the season 2 promos. +1
Allison attempts to see the silver lining of child abuse. This works and is a valid coping mechanism that I think is totally in character. Well done, writers. -1
The kiss on the cheek is very “this is the last time I will see my sibling whom I love very dearly and who also loves me for me”. This should have been it for Allison and Luther kissing because it’s a really good moment. -1
I love the dancing in the moonlight scene because it’s a reference to something from the comics. -1

If you look closely at Five’s hair, it looks sort of like the triangular shape from the comics. I can’t tell if that was intentional, but it was a good detail. Hair department. -1

Overall review:
After the powerhouse that is episode 5, this episode feels odd and out of place. My favorite parts were the Commission parts, and everything else felt like an interruption. Even more so when you consider that the commission parts are the only parts of the episode that actually happened. Sure, it’s great character building, but without any consequences, it feels cheap. I feel like I’ve said everything I needed to say, so I won’t get crazy with the analysis. I would say more if anything in this episode actually mattered.

Life Changes Part 4 || Paul Bissonnette

Summary: It’s crazy how quickly your life can change...one minute you’re a struggling personal injury lawyer and the next you’re working for one of the hottest sports podcasts to supplement your income. A new job and the end of a long-term relationship was just the beginning for Leigh Thompson when it comes to life changes. Thankfully she has the one and only Paul Bissonnette at her side to help her handle them all. 
Authors Note: I added 568 words to this one plus the social media posts that accompany it. Next chapter is probably going to be the one that gets the most editing but please let me know what you think about this one as I kept both Leigh’s and Paul’s pov in it.

“Change is never easy.”
Waking up my third day in Arizona I felt nauseous, but it wasn’t bad enough that I needed to bolt for the toilet. Deciding that I needed breakfast before getting some work done, I slipped a sweatshirt on before heading out to Paul’s kitchen. There I found the man himself cooking up some eggs and bacon. The smell made my stomach twist but I fought back the urge to throw up, instead grabbing a bottle of water and murmuring good morning to him.
“Good morning, want some breakfast?” He questioned peering at me over his shoulder while he cooked. When my stomach once again twisted after catching a whiff of the smell, I could only shrug my shoulders, pressing a palm to my stomach.
“My brain says yes, but my stomach is suggesting that maybe I should hold off. I’m managing to hold onto my stomach but just barely,” I admitted, wishing that my body would pull itself together and get over this whole nausea thing because it was really getting old. “So maybe I’ll just have a banana and go get some work done.”
Grabbing a piece of fruit from the bowl on the counter, I tried to ignore the look Paul was giving me as I peeled the banana and then headed back to the guest bedroom.
Staring at the words on my computer screen as I tried to work made my head spin a little, so I put everything to the side, instead just laying back down for a few minutes waiting for my vision to clear. I was almost back asleep when Paul appeared in the doorway declaring that he was going to go work out and then he had some content to film so he would be back around dinner time. Raising my hand in a thumbs up in acknowledgment I rolled back over and laid in bed for a few more minutes, the sound of the front door and Paul leaving following just a few minutes later.
Any additional rest I was attempting was cut off abruptly when the nausea took over and once again sent me bolting for the toilet. Throwing up was really the worst and left me feeling drained and gross. I couldn’t understand why I kept getting sick in the morning, other than that maybe it had something to do with drainage from sleeping and the humidity and air pressure. Deciding to clean up a little, I brushed my teeth and then turned the shower on, letting the heat from the water flow over my skin and the steam fill my lungs as I bathed until it ran cold.
After cleaning up, I redressed and my little bit of self care seemed to settle my stomach enough that I was able to spend a few hours working. Deciding I was done for the day around 1, I padded back out to the empty kitchen, digging through Paul’s cabinets for anything that my stomach might tolerate. He had a few boxes of protein bars and since only one sounded moderately decent, I grabbed two bars from the box and worked on breaking off pieces to eat while I changed to head out to the pool.
With my suit on under shorts and a tank top, I slipped my sunglasses onto my head and sandals onto my feet before pulling my book from my bag and phone from its charger. As I passed through the kitchen I also grabbed a bottle of sunscreen, a bottle of water, and the pool pass and condo key Paul had left behind. Arizona weather was nothing like the east coast this time of year and the sun on my skin felt wonderful. Laying out on a patio chair with my book was the perfect way to spend the rest of the afternoon and I couldn’t help but be jealous of the snowbirds that spend their winters like this while enjoying the more mild summers up north. 
I was still at the pool hours later when Paul found me, appearing over my chair as I lounged watching some of the kids playing before dinner. He was in his own swimsuit and simply plopped down on the chair beside me, setting a fresh bottle of water down for me next to my empty one.
“Glad you’re finally enjoying the pool.” He declared. “Or at least the pool deck…” He clarified because there were no signs that I’d gone into the water, though I definitely had gone for a swim an hour or so earlier.
“A girl’s gotta work on her tan.” I teased and once again I felt his eyes graze over my body before he smirked and slid his sunglasses back on. 
“Yeah...you are pretty ghosty looking.” 
He laughed as I chucked my empty water bottle at him. Moments later some of the kids in the water spotted Paul and called out for him wanting him to come play with them and I raised an eyebrow.
“Go on…you can’t let those kids down…” I teased, grinning over at him. Standing he sighed and turned to go to the pool but before he got two steps he turned and suddenly his hands were reaching for me, tugging me to my feet and then carrying me over to the pool where he promptly dropped me into the water before jumping in himself.
I was sputtering a bit when I came up for air, and spotting him mere feet away I simply shoved him before splashing as much water as I could manage his way. The kids didn’t give me much time to be angry even if I wanted to be (which I really didn’t) as they quickly pulled both of us into their game, tossing a foam football around. Their laughter was probably the best medicine I could ask for and Paul was unsurprisingly a good sport, getting super into the games. Watching him play with these kids only reaffirmed in my mind what a good guy he was and I knew that I was lucky to be in his life, even as just a friend and coworker.
We stayed in the pool for nearly half an hour after the kids went inside for dinner, just swimming lazy laps and watching as the sun started to set. Back inside, Paul set to start dinner while I changed, having picked up steaks and some broccoli to grill at my suggestion. After dinner, he made a fire once again and we spent the evening just relaxing and enjoying the weather outside. My week here was flying by way too quickly and I didn’t want these moments to end.

Paul’s POV
It was eight in the morning and once again the sound of Leigh vomiting served as my alarm clock for the day. She had been in Arizona for four days and had vomited or been nauseous each morning since arriving. Though she kept insisting that it was just stress, my gut was telling me otherwise. 
Pushing myself out of bed, I slid on a pair of sweats before padding to the guest bathroom, again pulling her hair away from her face while she spilled whatever might have been left in her stomach at this point. Squatting down beside her, I rubbed my left hand over her back gently. Once she appeared to be done, I stepped out of the bathroom while she finished cleaning up, grabbed my phone from the bedside table and proceeded into my bathroom pulling up my text conversation with Whits. 
She threw up again.
Brushing my teeth after taking a piss, I splashed some water on my face waiting for a text response.
Seriously? This is what day four?
That I’m aware of…
And she hasn’t been drinking tap water? And she’s fine the rest of the day?
Yeah, still think it’s just a bug? Because if it is I’ve never seen one like it.
No. Gonna get her to see a doctor?
I mean I think I have to. I don’t think she has any clue.
Or she does and is just in denial…
Man…good luck with that. Can’t say I envy you. Definitely sounds like your suspicions may be right though.
Man do I hope I’m wrong…
Within fifteen minutes I’m ready to go for the day and after checking with a buddy who operates a local clinic I’ve got a spot for her in an hour to be seen by a doctor. Convincing her to go is another problem entirely. Peeking into the guest bedroom, I see her curled up in a ball and after tapping on the door I walk in, moving to sit on the edge of the bed next to her. She looks so small like this and my chest clenches at what she’ll have to go through if my suspicions are right. 
“Come on. Get up.” I prod and she groans softly murmuring that she just wants to rest. “You can rest after you see a doctor.” Her face pales at my words and I start to wonder if she actually knows what is going on and is in denial. “Come on. I got you an appointment at a clinic a buddy runs.”
“I’ll be fine, it’s just a bug.” She declares attempting to get me to leave her alone.
“If it’s a bug then they can get you something to help your body fight it so you aren’t praying to my commode every morning. Come on. Let’s go. Get dressed.” Part of me feels bad because it’s clear she doesn’t feel well this morning but I’m not sure that continuing this routine is going to do her much good.
Finally, she works herself to her feet and motions for me to leave the room so she can change. Moving to the kitchen I grab one of the protein bars she seems to like so that she can eat it in the car as well as a bottle of water before making myself a quick smoothie so that we can get to the appointment on time.
When she enters the room I take in the dark circles under her eyes and her hair thrown up into a messy ponytail, simple shorts and a t-shirt covering her body. To say she looks tired is an understatement and after grabbing my keys I usher her out the door and into my car. 
Once in the car, she slumps against the window and winces as I start the car and music fills the cab. After quickly reaching to turn it down I back out of my parking spot and drive silently to the clinic, my worry growing the closer we get. The whole point of her coming out here was to get her feeling better and currently she looks worse than when she landed after not sleeping at all. 
Arriving about fifteen minutes before her appointment time I couldn’t help but smile seeing that she had fallen asleep. At this point, any rest that she could get would be to her benefit. Slipping out of the car, I move around to the passenger side door, opening it gently before reaching out to shake her awake softly. As she stirs, her face turns pale and after quickly unbuckling and scrambling out of the car she was puking once more into a bush at the side of the building. A soft groan falls from her mouth when she finally finishes and she gratefully takes the mint I offer shooting me a look that suggests I’m better off not saying anything because she doesn’t want to admit that I was right and she needs to see a doctor.
Guiding her inside I watch as she fills out the paperwork as best she can while feeling sick and not having full mental capabilities. When a nurse calls her back I softly murmur that I will be here when she is done unless she wants me to go with. Standing, she shakes her head, so I sit back in the chair, pulling out my phone to serve as a distraction until she is finished.

Every few minutes I find myself glancing at the clock, my knee bouncing as I try and occupy myself while I wait. Multiple other patients come and go as I sit there growing more worried the longer she’s back there. After what feels like forever the door finally opens, but when I glance up its a nurse and not Leigh. Seeing that she has my attention she silently motions for me to follow her and we walk back to an exam room where she knocks softly on the door before opening it and motioning for me to enter.
The sight in front of me immediately breaks my heart, Leigh is clinging to a nurse, her body shaking uncontrollably with sobs. The same instinct that had propelled me forward when she was crying outside of the building in Boston caused me to do the same thing now and seeing me in her periphery the nurse helps slide Leigh from her arms into my chest. Wrapping her up tightly, I rub her back, a litany of curses filling my mind. I wanted to be wrong, I prayed that I was wrong and that my stupid male brain was just missing something. For once being right is the worst feeling in the world. 
Eventually, she stops shaking, though I can feel the moisture of her tears continuing to soak through my shirt. Moving a hand from her back, I rub my fingers over the top of her head before pulling back just enough to wipe at the tears in her eyes. When she finally looks up at me, her mouth opens and then shuts repeatedly, words refusing to form. As more tears fall, I continue to wipe them away not sure what else I could possibly do to comfort her. 
“Why does the universe hate me?” She finally mumbled, the faintness of her voice signaling that she was barely holding herself together. Honestly, I didn’t have an answer for her and so I just shook my head, bending enough to press my mouth to her temple, kissing softly.
“I don’t know.” Swallowing hard, I sighed softly. “But it’s all going to be okay…” Though my words were meant to be comforting, it seemed like they were anything but when she pulled away from me like she’d been burned.
“What do you mean it’s all going to be okay? I’m pregnant! I’m pregnant with my fucking married ex’s child. The same ex who lied to me for the entirety of our relationship. Who made me the other woman. How am I supposed to have a baby?!” Her rant came with a raised voice that was just short of shouting and suddenly she slumped back down into a seated position on the exam table.
“Oh my god…I’m having a baby…” I could almost see the wheels turning in her mind and while I wanted to say something, I was certain that anything leaving my mouth right now would be the wrong thing. “I’m having a baby…what am I gonna do Paul?” Suddenly her eyes were focused on me again and feeling the shift in the air I pulled her back into a hug.
“You’re gonna be a kickass mom and a milf. That’s what.” Her body shook briefly, this time in more of a laughing manner than a sobbing one, and when her eyes met mine again there was a bit more light in them than before and I let out a sigh of relief that my humor had actually helped for once. “You’ve got your parents and sisters, all of your extended family to support you. You know you’ll have the rest of the guys, they all think of you like a sister already. And of course, you have me.” A second after I finished speaking it hit me that maybe she would get the wrong impression by the fact that I separated myself from the rest of the guys, so I opened my mouth again in hopes that she wouldn’t notice. “That fucking moron doesn’t know what he’s missing out on.” The small smile that had started to appear on her face disappeared and I quickly realized it would have been better if I had just stopped and let her dwell on my previous statement. Stupidly mentioning her ex was a mistake and I watched as she pulled her bottom lip between her teeth, an angry glare flickering in her eyes. 
“I’m not telling him. He doesn’t get to be a part of this.” She paused almost like she was waiting for me to tell her that he deserves to know. When I didn’t, because I had already fucked this up enough, she continued. “You know, considering everything, this was probably the only good thing he ever did for me and I’m not going to let him ruin it by letting him be involved. He chose her, by breaking my heart and lying to me he lost any right he had to ever get to know this baby. This baby is better off with no father than with one who doesn’t see the harm and lying and cheating his way through life.” I couldn’t really fault her for that and instead just nodded rubbing her back again.
“Wanna get out of here?” I questioned certain that this wouldn’t be the last breakdown she had about this but for the moment she had seemed to accept it which is probably better than I would be in her situation. When she responded affirmatively, we left the exam room and checked out of the clinic, a nurse handing her a million and one pamphlets as well as what looked like two prescriptions.
Sliding back into my car I asked if she needed to go get the scripts filled and then if she wanted to go home or wanted to go do something distracting? Her response about the pharmacy was certain but she seemed to waver on the latter, glancing at herself in the mirror and cringing. 
“Why don’t we just go for a drive?” I suggested, causing her to smile a bit brighter from beside me. While we waited at the pharmacy drive thru she pulled up a scenic driving route and after a little prodding I convinced her to try and eat the protein bars and to drink some water knowing that she had to take care of more than just herself now. 
The sun had set before we returned home, having driven the Apache Trail with music blasting over my radio and the brunette beside me singing at the top of her lungs from the passenger seat before we eventually stopped for dinner. Settling onto the couch, Leigh seemed much more relaxed than earlier that day or even since she’d gotten off the plane in Phoenix.
Peeking across the room, Leigh was going through the million photos she’d taken on her phone, trying to decide which ones were the best and worth sharing on social media. I’d already decided what I was uploading: a few scenic shots, a short clip of her performing car karaoke, and a photo of her from behind while she was gawking at the landscape in front of her.
For a few hours, it had seemed like she’d forgotten all about the life-changing news thrown at her that morning. Forgotten that thanks to the idiot who had broken her heart that she was about to become a mother.
A knock at my door around 2 am signaled that the illusion had been broken. After waking up, I motioned her into my room, lifted the covers for her to crawl into bed and then tugged her into my chest and wrapped my arms around her. Feeling her tears against my skin I sighed softly and began running my fingers through her hair just tucking her as close to me as I could.
This was going to be a long and emotional journey for her and it looks like I’m along for the ride and all of these big life changes.

Hiii guys I’m back!! Here’s part 2 of Sue Me! It’s a little longer and it turned out better than I initially planned so hope you all like it as well,, please leave me comments and feed back!
“He what?!”
“Shhh,, Jesus keep your voice down Mina, I don’t need the whole office knowing,” you quickly whisper as your gaze searches the empty office floor for any intruding listeners. You show her the invitation and as her eyes flit across the paper, she can’t help but grin, stifling a squeal. Her heels tap excitedly against the carpet instead, the muffled taps an outlet for her excitement.
“I can’t believe he offered to go with you, and just after that one run in at the club, ugh y/n I don’t know how to deal with this!” Finally letting out her squeal she gives your arm a squeeze while you gingerly smile in response.
Mina has been the only other soul you’ve told about the reunion and Jungkook’s offer of course. At least there was someone else in your life you were thankful for to tell your thoughts to. Mina was your senior by a year, personal assistant and secretary to Jeon Junghyun, the other dastardly charming and handsome Jeon lawyer and Jungkook’s older brother. Having gone to your college and subsequently landing a job at the law firm as well, she quickly sought you on your first day of work before you could introduce yourself. Mina was the very kind and passionate woman you could only wish to be someday in the near future. Her poise and professionalism, however, only a workplace facade as you quickly got to know her more quirky, spontaneous personality. She quickly took you under her wing, both at the office and literally when you were temporarily homeless after being kicked out of your apartment. Regardless of the brief time the two of you spent with each other, the relationship with Mina peaked when she offered to be roommates, claiming her plants at home “needed more love and another source of oxygen”. Since then you and Mina commute to the office and school everyday, becoming one another’s sister you never knew you needed but always wanted.
Over the course of wine-drunk nights and girls-night-in, Mina knew well of your history with Hoseok. She wasn’t surprised about his desperation of being a fuckboy, acknowledging the social flourish of guys like him in college settings, once they’ve surpassed the awkward stages of high school. With Mina, you poured out your heartbreak consumed by emotions and alcohol, the understood break-up starter pack. Too many times had Mina drop kicked your body pillow drunkenly, claiming it was Hoseok’s cheating ass, or visualized his face on the dart board of your favorite bar. All in all, Mina was your number one supporter of using, no requesting Jungkook’s presence to emphasize your post heartbreak move-on.
“If only Junghyun had enough romance in his body to realize what a smoking hot secretary he has and offer to aid her in some devious revenge slash I’m the bigger person romcom plot,” you say sighing, waggling your eyebrows at her. Sure enough, you really wish Junghyun had the hots for your friend, they both looked ridiculously and illegally good together and you weren’t surprised if there were unintentional feelings masked by both their strict adherence to professionalism. You swear you’ve seen Junghyun linger the eye contact with Mina, or maybe it’s the way he waits for her every morning at the elevator, or even his tone differs with her. You mentally slap yourself for not compiling physical evidence of the potential blossoming of love in the office.
“Hey! My boss isn’t the one you should be worried about having any romance in him, seems like yours might have a little too much huhh??” Nudging her foot against yours, you push her swivel chair as she spins away laughing, your face heating up at her simple comment. There’s nothing romantic about Jungkook going as your date, its merely, no strictly, correcting yourself, an offer to gain a little self-confidence to finally get over your first heart-break. It’s just another opportunity in the road of life you tell yourself, acknowledging the immense kindness your boss is extending towards you. And in no way did he appear to make it a charity case, rather it seemed like he wanted to see you find closure and perhaps wipe that smirk off your ex’s face while you’re at it. Grinning, you roll towards Mina and pull her closer but your conversation is suddenly interrupted by the surge of co-workers arriving back from their lunch break. “We’ll talk tonight y/n,” Mina whispers, sending you a wink as you both turn towards your desk.
“Mina can you come into my office.”
“Y/n, you as well, I need some things.” The Jeon brothers peek out from their offices at opposite ends of the sector, both dressed in handsome attire though somewhat lax in appearance like the rolled up sleeves or unbuttoned collar. The pair of you stand to walk towards their respective offices but not before you had the chance to make kissy faces at Mina, she slapping your ass in turn as you both hope nobody witnessed the exchange. As Mina disappears into Junghyun’s office, you gingerly close the door to Jungkook’s.
“Y/n, I need you to research previous rulings similar to this case and make a list of laws relating to the client’s situation, focus especially on loopholes that the prosecution may pinpoint or any extraneous details that could possibly give us leverage. Also formulate the agreement for the Jung case that we observed earlier, I need that by tomorrow if possible, we will meet with them in person and have it dealt with. Email a copy to their legal team when you’re finished and remind them of the meeting.”
Jungkook looks up after assigning the tasks to you, realizing you haven’t responded due to your diligence in writing notes. As he waited for you to catch up, he quietly observes the way you support your notepad with one hand while your other grips the pen, marking the page in quick flourishes; the way your soft hair spills over your shoulders, a strand you haven’t had the chance to tuck behind your ear as your face scrunched in concentration. Slowly, he begins to acknowledge the tug in his chest, a pull of admiration and something more. He had always been praised for being the youngest lawyer to work at his family’s firm, an aside to being an accomplished one at that. Moreover he’s used to the fawning of others in the workplace that aren’t his actual family, especially the female coworkers who can only stare and sweetly smile at the lawyer, hoping for acknowledgment. In truth, Jungkook had dreaded having an intern who would double as his secretary, he didn’t need the help nor did he need the prospects of a clingy “fangirl”. He had always respected the office as a professional setting and although he would casually smile to the women vying for his attention, he wasn’t fond of it either. Junghyun had convinced Jungkook to accept the proposal after telling him that his work would be more efficient and having an official secretary made his position more, well official. When Jungkook conceded, his brother made sure his own secretary would pick and choose the ideal candidate, hoping to gain insight from someone as good at the job as Mina was.
Meeting you for the first time, Jungkook immediately acknowledged your professionalism and your immense passion that unraveled over the course of time. Since then, Jungkook saw you as his equal, no less than him despite still being a college student, and no less despite your position as an intern. He understood the dynamic of lawyer and intern/secretary, Junghyun and Mina the perfect exemple of equal parts trust, efficiency, and professionalism, that which you and him immediately gained upon the first week of your arrival. He really did enjoy your company, not only because of your work ethic and your proficiency but even then your personality. Though he only got to know one facet at work, he witnessed many more that night at the club which made him all the more curious about you. Jungkook himself wasn’t sure why he was so adamant about accompanying you to your reunion but when he saw your douchebag ex and the greasy smirk permanently etched onto his face, the way you actually opened your heart to him willingly, trusting him when he encouraged you to go on, he felt a little bit of his professional demeanor falter. He sought the desire for his intern to be happy, to be able to move on from the past and seek closure herself, much like what he always strives for in helping his clients. Jungkook wasn’t so twisted that he would consider the offer to you like that of a client, but a part of him— a very large part of him wanted to see you shining in brilliance and happiness, exuding the same amount of confidence you have for your job to be equal to that of your personal life. And if Jungkook was able to be the source of that, by all means adamant he would be.
“Is that all Mr. Jeon?” you inquire, glancing up from your notepad. You realize that Jungkook was already looking at you but you fail to break eye contact because you were the one who had the last word. You tensely smile and manage a gulp, hoping he wouldn’t notice your attempt to shrink from his intense gaze.
“Please call me Jungkook y/n. If we’re gonna pull this off, I can’t have you calling me mister the whole night,” referring to your reunion.
“Of course Jungkook, sorry just a workplace habit.” Your tone wavers and you grip your notepad, but nonetheless forcing yourself to inquire further, “Are you sure you still want to go through with this Jungkook?” completely aware that you had dropped your professionalism in an effort to confirm your thoughts.
Jungkook smiles at your awkwardness and the unease that appears to cross your face, softly chuckling he confirm his offer, adding a quick “no returns or exchanges cause you’re stuck with me now” which causes you to widen in expression, surprised that he too had dropped the professionalism. As you turn to leave his office after you wave your notebook in the air and tell him you intend to get your work done, Jungkook can’t help but feel a little lighter, reminiscing the same way he felt that night when the both of you were just a little intoxicated and a lot more comfortable. xx
As Jungkook moves forward in shaking the client’s hands, you stand as well bowing towards their departure. Sighing, Jungkook takes a seat and leans back, body lax in an attempt of relieving the stress he had accumulated from the week. The reunion was in a week and the two of you still had to bring the topic up to the table. Seeing as the meeting ended the work day and you would be subsequently going home afterwards, you wondered if you could bring it up to Jungkook. Your thoughts are interrupted when Jungkook calls you out. Sipping his drink, he inquires: “Y/n, do you know what you’re wearing yet?” You take a moment to think and shake your head no, mentally adding one more thing to your infinite list of things to stress about. “Hmm, are you doing anything else for today then?” and again you shake your head no, not understanding why he felt the need to ask that nor what his intentions were. As Jungkook rises to stand, he quips his head towards the door, motioning for you to follow him. “Alright, well let’s have a dress rehearsal then, shall we?”
Both of you pile into his car, you not too foreign with him driving the luxurious Maserati across town to attend court rulings and client meetings. Yet as the sun begins to set in the city and Jungkook turns on the radio to soft music, you can feel the work stress of the week dissolving from your body, able to let go of the professionalism of the office to just chilling on a car ride. You guess the same goes for Jungkook as he drives steadily with one hand, the other dragging through his soft hair, touselling the usual neat hairdo as the wind blows through it as well, his elbow resting on the windowsill. You never had the opportunity to fully take in Jungkook’s appearance, you’re usually too busy taking care of his tasks or dedicating yourself fully to the case to spare a moment to admire the man all the other women can’t seem to get enough of. You never understood their’ obsession with your boss, giving you the side eye or whispering about you when you first landed the internship, eventually you learned it was all laced with jealousy. You simply recognized Jungkook’s ability and work ethic that you only had respect for the man you would be working with.
However, in the moment of driving like this you truly realized how handsome he was. His side profile contrasts against the disappearing light of the setting sun, his eyes bright and soft though worn with fatigue, the curve of his nose, your gaze tumbling towards his soft lips that are now pulled at the edges as he hums to the song. He truly is remarkable and you regret not being able to see it sooner, his youth honestly exuding from his appearance, in his smile, as he slowly turns his head to face you. For some reason you can’t look away, and you don’t. You stare at him, hoping your gaze isn’t too intense as you take in all his features. His soft smile only grows wider and you notice two perfect imperfections on his face, the whisper of a scar against his left cheek and the devious mole right underneath his bottom lip. He redirects his attention to the road but not before taking in your own soft features, your eyes that still have not abandoned him.
Inhaling, you take in a deep breath of air filling your lungs, able to grasp at the relieving freedom. As Jungkook drives across a bridge, you lean back against the seat and turn towards him again, hands folded between your face and the leather seats.
“Thank you,” you softly say, hoping the wind doesn’t carry your words away from his ear. Without glancing over at you, Jungkook asks “for what,” feeding you the confidence to keep speaking.
“For believing in me I guess.. for believing in my right to closure. No matter how much of a front I put on, it all comes down the moment I remember what happened. Curse my impeccable memory but I can recall everything like it happened yesterday,” you speak with a small, sad smile. Jungkook finally looks over at you again and this time, your soft eyes are lost in the past, lost in the very real, very valid pain that you barely speak about.
“We were slowly fading, I could feel it. I tried so hard to grasp at whatever was left but I just couldn’t, like you know when you lose a balloon and it just keeps drifting away but no matter how high you jump or how hard you run after it, the ribbon just keeps slipping out of your grasp.” Jungkook affirms by nodding so you continue.
“Day by day, his temper grew shorter and the things he would say to me just hit harder. He would tell me that it was my fault we were falling apart, unable to keep up with his affections, unable to cater to his needs, unable to be what he wanted.”
“He didn’t just reject my attempt but he rejected me overall. The things he once adored about me burned with annoyance until he couldn’t even look at me, my appearance and my personality, it all shattered. I felt disgusted with myself, out of my own skin. Because someone couldn’t love me anymore, I couldn't love myself.”
Jungkook caught the tear that escaped your eyes, as it slowly rolled down your cheek, the sunlight glinted off of it, enticing him to reach a hand towards you and brush the memento of pain off your cheek. You looked over at him, catching his gaze as you forced a sad smile. Jungkook could only return with his own small smile, not equal in pain but equal in understanding and empathy.
He didn’t ask for the rest of the story, recalling that it had ended with you catching him in the act with no one else but your childhood best friend. What a fucking dick Jungkook thought to himself. How could anyone do that to someone like you he seriously wondered, his dangerously impassioned thoughts seriously contemplating the sick humanity of some people.
As he parks the car and climbs out, you look around curiously acknowledging the place he had driven to as one of the classiest boutiques in the city. You could barely afford the cheapest clothes hanger here being a college student and all but you guess window shopping would be nice for the soul and easy on the eyes. Silently thanking god you were still dressed in your work clothes, you could walk around without standing out, even more so walking alongside Jungkook. You quickly catch up to his long strides and he chuckles at your fervor to walk next to him. As he pulls a door open, you enter the store hesitantly and wait for him to come inside as well. Your eyes immediately marvel at the grandeur of the place, the crystal chandelier and the endless displays of designer shoes, and couture clothing, the overall extravagant gold aesthetic the store feeds. Your eyes are lighting up and Jungkook makes a note of the way you take in the little things, the subtle glimmer of the waxed floor and the array of mirrors that reflect the crystal light. Too afraid to touch anything, your hand simply graces above the clothes as a small exhale escapes your mouth as if you were holding your breath. Jungkook admires you from behind, your frame walking along the store as your hand is outstretched, lightly skimming the couture, a smile of humility on your face as your eyes reveal the joy you have for art, a simple sight but nonetheless beautiful in his eyes. As Jungkook moves to approach you, he swore to himself he would never ever forget the look on your face, the way his heart skips a beat at the awestruck look you give him, gratitude flashing across your face thanking him for showing you such beauty.
“So what was his favorite color?” Your thoughts fall back down to reality and you stutter to answer before finally responding with an “Excuse me?”
Jungkook gives you a smirk, something you rarely ever see in the office, as he explains himself. “I was thinking that you should wear his favorite color…because then whenever he thinks about the color, it’s associated with how good you will look that night and he will always regret the fact that now his favorite something was something he lost sight of?” his confidence faltering at the end of his scheme. You couldn’t help but giggle at his cute attempt to make the entire comeback plan worthwhile, appreciating his efforts because you can literally see the gears turning in his mind, you take a step closer and give him the most genuine smile you could possibly show.
“Green. Green was his favorite color.”
“Oh and Jungkook? I like that. A lot,” referring to his idea, saying so before he quickly scans the store for any green dresses. As his eyes land on one near the back of the store, he grabs your hands and yank you towards it, your excitement bursting as you grip his hand tighter.

Jungkook anxiously sits outside on the plush sofa in the changing rooms. He’s silently grateful there weren’t many customers in the store so that he could sit in the changing room waiting area without looking too suspicious. He picks up a magazine to skim through while you try on the dress he had chosen for you.
As the heavy velvet curtain slowly moves aside, Jungkook’s eyes gaze up and peer out over the magazine. Immediately he breaks out into a grin as his hand flies up to rub his neck, the tingling in his ears bothersome against the suddenly loud thumping of his heart.
You looked beautiful in green, more so emerald, but nonetheless the dress hugged all the right curves as it stopped mid thigh, the micro slit teasing for more while the top cascaded down your chest, an appropriate amount of cleavage that left much to one’s imagination. The emerald brought out your dark features, the brilliance in your eyes and the subtle blush now on your cheeks.
You had first saw Jungkook’s wide smile and as you took a couple steps back, he got up and took a couple forward. As he came closer, your heart pounding the sound reverberating through your ears, you search his face as he tucks a strand of hair behind your ear.
“Y/n, you look beautiful.”
It was the simplest compliment anyone could’ve said to you but because it came from Jungkook, it meant so much more. You couldn’t help but flourish at his genuine smile, encouraging you to finally accept how beautiful you are, true to his words.
Eye contact was a frequent occurrence this day, and it didn’t lessen any as you stood there staring into his eyes and his into yours, the proximity much closer than you expected.
The both of you snap back to reality when the pretty sales attendant clears her throat, obviously awkward in her place as her eyes shift around. You recall her earlier attempts at flirting with Jungkook, laughing a little to yourself as she clearly underestimated your relationship with him, feeling the embarrassment flood her interactions with Jungkook now especially with your presence. But not that there was any relationship between you and Jungkook anyway..the mere absurdity of the situation amusing you, you conclude.
Jungkook appears to have concluded just as much also as he also lets out a light laugh and turns towards the attendant. “Thank you for your help, we’ll take it.”
As he moves to help you with the zipper, an unexpected but not intruding gesture you realize the quick reality of the situation. Whipping around and mentally hoping the sales associate was no longer there, you whisper to Jungkook, “Wait! What do you mean take it? Jungkook I can’t afford this!” He laughs at your alarm and simply turns you around before undoing your zipper. “I’ll be waiting outside.”
Confused and even more alarmed when you finally see the exact numbers indicating the price of the dress, you feel your hands nervously shake as you gingerly place the dress on the hanger, fearful for anything to actually happen to the garment. As you step outside the changing room, Jungkook snatches the dress before you could protest and hands it to the sales attendant, swiping his black card as you stand there in silent anguish, knowing you were unable to argue with him now.
Exiting the store, Jungkook has the goofiest grin plastered on his face as he observes your reaction, ranging from your tireless attempts to walk beside his steady strides to mumbling about paying him back in installments. You don’t make much of an effort to speak while trying to catch up with him but after finally settling in the car, you start rambling on how to pay him back and how he could spend so much money on you and how dare he go around spending his money like that, speaking in terms as his secretary. You’re still talking in equal parts dismay and irritation even as you reach a red light, Jungkook’s eyebrow raising as he’s never witnessed you speak so fervently and just, so much. An idea pops into his mind and he’s grinning from ear to ear, but of course you’re oblivious because you’re still in denial at Jeon fucking Jungkook spending so much money on your ass that you’re thrown into shock beyond oblivion when he leans over and presses a kiss to your lips. That better shut her up Jungkook thinks to himself in amusement as he suppresses the smile that’s threatening to escape, concealing it with a cough and bringing his free hand to rest on his philtrum instead.
Your heart obviously can’t take anymore of this and you sit stiffly, making an effort to not make another sound or move. You glance over at Jungkook as he drives, a stupid smirk still on his face and you seriously don’t even know how to begin to comprehend the situation.
He’s still silently observing you in amusement, the way your hands are politely folded in your lap, your head positioned forward but he knows you’re taking glances at him. Jungkook mentally pinches himself for not getting to know you sooner, ultimately deciding that you were definitely someone who has his heart.
As he pulls up to your house after you gave him your address, him quietly prodding your attention to snap you out of whatever state you were currently in, your shoulders immediately release and relieve yourself of the tension you yourself created. You get out of the car and sigh as you turn towards Jungkook getting out of his car as well. He leans against the car from his side, resting his head in his arms on top of the car roof as the night wind softly blows through his hair. Something tugs at your chest and you really don’t want him to leave, upset that for the last leg of the car ride you withdrew yourself over the embarrassment that Jungkook had kissed you.
“Thank you Jungkook. For today, the dress, everything.” You softly smile, hoping to express your genuine gratitude and in some way apologizing for your immature antics after the kiss.
“I’m sorry about the kiss y/n. I didn’t mean to intrude and I don’t have any ulterior intentions either..” Jungkook offers you his most sincere smile, horribly attempting to mask the realization of utter humiliation of his actions, or even worse the consequences of what he did. He was so lost in enjoying your quirks that he failed to realize any misunderstanding of his intentions. Eyes widening, he immediately stammers to offer more of an explanation for his actions, having no actual reason besides the fact that he might be in love, finding any excuse but that.
With the both of you having an equal and fair exchange of self-actualization, embarrassment, and futile attempts to make up for any misunderstanding, you silently listen to his rambling before breaking into a larger grin, soon laughing at both of your antics. Jungkook looks on at you in confusion and so you wonder if he’d like to come in. Shifting the weight of the dress neatly packaged in the designer shopping bag, you ask him, “Um do you want to come in? For a drink or to refresh yourself?” A part of you silently hoping he agrees because you really aren’t ready for the night to end.
And so the night goes on in subtle flirting and obnoxious laughter, you pushing his chest multiple times as he teases at the other people in your office like Mr. Lee, the paralegal, who obviously has the hots for Ms. Min, the single mother lawyer who treats you like her own daughter and whom you have come to love. Competing against Jungkook’s own observations, you point out the prospects of a relationship between Moon-Hee and Dong-Hyuk, the other two lawyers of the legal team.
“No way! They’re always at each other’s throats, no way there’s something between them.”
“Okay but think about how they only tease one another, the way they vie for each other’s attention. Obviously they’re trying to get the other to notice them and they’re both so hopelessly and cluelessly in love that ultimately they resort to bullying one another.”
Jungkook contemplates your observations and slowly expresses his realization with an open-mouthed gasp. “You are such a drama queen, please Jungkook,” uncontrollably giggling at his reactions. He begins to poke at your sides as punishment for calling him out and you really can’t breathe, tapping out on his shoulder.
Jungkook stops before getting serious again, his gaze darkens as he looks at you, “Okay, but what about my brother and Mina though.” He turns sly, his eyebrow quips up as he anticipates your reaction. You nearly jump him, clutching his shoulders and settling on your knees. “OHMYGOD I KNOW RIGHT? YOU CAN SEE IT TOO?” Excitement bubbling in your outburst after finally finding a confidant about the obvious affection between your best friend and the older Jeon. Jungkook just adores your quirk and can’t help but smile. His cheeks are getting sore from all the damn smiling he’s done today but it's worth it because he really wants to show you the genuine happiness you’ve brought out of him.
The two of you ramble on about everything you’ve noticed between Mina and Junghyun, affirming your suspicions but ultimately sighing at their own stubbornness and failing to realize how they truly feel about one another. You’re glad that Mina hadn’t come home yet and you wonder if she was ironically at the office with Junghyun working over time. Eventually Jungkook leaves, and you realize you’re still smiling, if you could smile yourself to sleep that's probably what happened.
Over the course of the next week, you and Jungkook exponentially grow closer than you had over the past year. He calls you into his office more often, even for small things like if his tie was crooked or if his socks matched his pocket square. You attended more meetings with him, followed him around more, brought coffee into his office consistently while he invited you for lunch and dinner almost everyday. You became accustomed to his quirks, not just in the office but on his free time, joining him on more sunset city drives with the windows rolled down, soft music playing, or people watching from the office rooftop after you told him about that place you came to be on top of the world.

The day finally arrives and you’d be lying if you said you weren’t the least bit nervous. Like electricity surging through your veins, your fingers could barely hold steady. Slipping into the dress, your hands skim the fabric, unable to control the tick of your fingers. Mina helps you with the zipper, your nervousness apparent, as she moves your hair to spill over your shoulders and down your back, lightly squeezing your arms to turn you around. Facing the mirror once more, you force your gaze to trail from your legs up until you’ve built enough courage to look at your reflection face on. Truly the dress Jungkook chose does wonders for your legs, your dips, your curves, and most of all your confidence. As you meet your own eyes in the mirror, you can’t conceal the nostalgic sense of love for yourself that you had lost for so long. Not that the dress made you finally acknowledge your worth or beauty, but the fact that it was able to draw out those feelings you had buried. You recall Jungkook’s simple compliment and finally, your own worth and beauty were no longer marred by Hoseok’s damaging and toxic love but rather determined by your own resolve. You were in love with yourself and you couldn’t help but want to save a part of that for someone else as well.
You’re putting on the heels you borrowed from Mina when you hear her stifle a sob, her eyes glistening with tears as if she was daring them to fall.
“Don’t fucking do this to me Mina, stop it, I can’t have my girl crying like this,” as you pull her into a tight hug.
“I’m sorry y/n, you’re just so, so beautiful, and a-and brave, and I hope you wipe that fucking smirk off that dickhead’s face oh godawuehh,” she says in between sobs.
Brushing wet hair out of her face, you grab her cheeks and tell her to get her shit together.
“Min you have your date with Junghyun today, did you really forget? Sis, you can’t show up puffy and red like this even though I’m sure he’s whipped as hell for your ass regardless, but still! You have to look exceptionally pretty tonight so no. more. fucking. tears. Understood?” She carefully nods and is grateful that sometimes you wear the bigger pants around in the house. The tone in which you gave her pep talk was also your own desperate attempt to inject yourself with some confidence, to calm your own nerves.
Well screw that because the apartment buzzes and you open the door for Jungkook. He inhales a sharp breath as he takes you in, his eyes fluttering over your features, bold and elegant, defiant and radiating in his eyes. He’s at a lost for words and you help him out by softly saying “You look amazing.”
Your gaze finally settles on how your boss looks, the perfectly tailored suit flaunting his slim but built physique, the lack of bow or tie and instead the bare collar opened by a couple buttons. His hair is neatly styled except for a couple loose strands that fall the wrong way. Unhesitantly you reach up to brush it out of the way, your hand lightly skimming his dark features, his eyes, the slope of his nose, the curve of his lips open as he follows wherever your hand moves.
Ahem! Mina coughs, or clearing her throat, whatever, interrupting your moment as you quickly withdraw your hand and step back, trying not to notice the way Jungkook’s ears are furiously red.
“Oh, um these are for you Mina,” handing her a bouquet of roses. He explains that they were a pre-date gift from Junghyun and Jungkook rolls his eyes at his brother’s absolute cheese. Mina laughs before accepting them excitedly, composing herself when she realizes you and Jungkook staring.
Glancing at the imaginary watch on her arm, she rushes the two of you towards the door, making you abandon Jungkook to gather your phone and purse. When you turn back around Mina is whispering something into his ear, his face contemplating her words as his eyes widen and fear creeps into his face. As he moves away from her, clearly shaken, she pulls you into a hug instead, smiling innocently.
“Don’t worry about coming home too soon, enjoy your time my beautiful. Bye I love you.”
Finally settling into his car, your curiosity gets the best of you and you turn to ask him what exactly Mina said. He nervously glances back at your apartment building, chokes a little, and mutters something about his dick being tied into a pretty bow. You had to give credit to Mina’s creative integrity whenever it came to instilling fear in people, but certainly you pitied the boy even more so tonight. As Jungkook drives away, fear still blatantly marked across his face, you feel the same equivalence in fear as you realize the night is only beginning.
The sunlight slowly begins to diminish and Jungkook looks over at your tense figure, hands gripping the hem of your dress, knuckles white. He notices the way you chew your bottom lip, your gaze clearly lost in your own thoughts. Jungkook really does feel something for the girl next to him and reaches over, intertwining his fingers with yours. You immediately look over in surprise but the feeling of gratitude washes over you as you hold onto his hand and sink into your seat, grateful for having him by your side and maybe even falling a little into love.

Jungkook pulls up to the Grand Resort Hotel, dropping his keys off with the valet and grabbing your hand once more. Naturally, you intertwine fingers and the feeling feels like home to you. He glances at you again, offering you a mischievous smile.
“You ready to do this?”
Although your heart wants to say no, still afraid of being hurt again, still wary of the throbbing numb and the sinking feeling in your chest, you close your eyes and take a shaky breath in.
“Hell yeah let’s do this,” and with that resolve, you’re smiling right back at Jungkook, matching his quirky smile with your own, ready to get the closure you deserve.
Entering the ballroom, you grip Jungkook’s hand tighter and naturally he pulls you in closer. The room is filled with familiar faces, all the same but just a bit older as you recognize a couple people. Walking past a group of women, you feel their eyes on you as you recall the similar condescending and jealous gazes from high school. You were so intent on proving something to yourself, the resolve stemming from Hoseok that you had forgotten the other ugly parts of high school. The same girls that threw themselves at Hoseok while you guys were dating, the same girls that would speak about you to him, each and every comment laced with the intention to patronize you. Hoseok ultimately falling into their words, believing them and making them a reality. Your confidence falters and you temporarily lose sight of who you’ve become, of who you want to be. Why are you doing this stupid comeback? As if you do have something to prove to these people. What are you even doing y/n?
Jungkook senses your hesitation as you momentarily stop for absolutely no reason and he immediately concludes that it must’ve been someone you saw. His eyes scan your peripheral and they land on the very obvious, demeaning eyes of a group of girls. Jungkook sighs, understanding that whatever happened in the past is out of his control, however he’s intent on making the most of the night for you.
He steps in front of you, blocking your line of sight from whatever it was you were staring at as you were lost in your thoughts, simultaneously snapping you out of it. He places his hands on your arms gingerly and simply says, “Don’t worry about them okay? Just focus on me, me alright? I’m feeling selfish today, sorry y/n but I want your attention to be on me tonight.”
His unexpected method of saving you from your thoughts dissolves any anxiety you had earlier because now you’re only occupied with his face, occupied with his hands touching you.
“Y/n!”
“It’s her! Dude see! I told you!”
You and Jungkook snap out of your moment as you search for the source of your name. You’re immediately flooded with nostalgia and taken back to the happier times in high school. One by one the boys come to surround you, getting their fair share of hugs as you smile at Seokjin, Taehyung, and Jimin. Despite their history with Hoseok, they also had a history with you as their friend. You missed hanging out with them, going AWOL after you broke up with Hoseok. They all chastised their friend for being such a dick, taking your side by all means but choosing rather to give you the space you needed. They all loved you in their own way and you wish you could go back in time to relive the shared memories you had with them, even if that meant dating Hoseok.
Seokjin being the oldest was the best brother you always wanted but never got, period. Taehyung and Jimin were your sun and moon, revolving aspects of your day that were never complete unless they ruffled your hair and pinched your cheeks. Namjoon, who was to arrive later Seokjin explained as you immediately pouted, was your one and only advocate every time you needed someone to listen to your troubles, especially when it was about Hoseok. And finally Yoongi who Jimin pointed out was getting a drink over by the pop-up bar was the one you hung out with the most when Hoseok wasn’t around; you loved Yoongi because of his calm and quiet demeanor, something you both shared as well as your distaste in physical contact. You loved doing anything and absolutely nothing in his company, grateful for the times you were just in his company to cry about the break up.
In a blink, Yoongi was over by your side and you reached for a hug, lingering a while longer than the rest because you genuinely missed him. He eventually pushed you away with a grunt and eyed Jungkook suspiciously.
“Are you gonna introduce us or not y/n,” he stated gruffly, you knowing he was just trying to intimidate your date. But of course it worked and Jungkook took a couple steps behind you, trying to play it off. Tugging Jungkook to your side and pushing Yoongi out of the way, to which he scrunched his face in distaste which you ignored with an innocent smile, you introduce him as your date. As the guys move in to shake his hand, Yoongi clapping his back both reassuringly and threateningly, you feel yourself more at ease knowing the guys were just as happy to see you had moved on. Amidst the excited chatter with your date, everyone freezes as they gaze behind you.
“Y/n, I knew I’d see you again.” That voice. The effortlessly enticing and saccharine sound.
Closing your eyes in an attempt to brace yourself you turn around, and there he is.
“Hello Hoseok,” you say quickly forcing a compromising smile.
His eyes quickly glance between you and Jungkook to your intertwined hands, prompting Jungkook to greet him first again.
“Pleasure seeing you here Hoseok,” Jungkook merely nodding rather than extend his hand. You as well as the others witness Jungkook’s actions, a daring move that earns respect from your old friends.
Hoseok twitches in annoyance as his tongue prods at his inner cheek, studying the two of you as if waiting for the opportunity to strike. At the pulsing tension, the other guys surge forward to greet Hoseok instead, momentarily breaking the strain. While they keep Hoseok occupied, you quickly tug on Jungkook’s hand as he follows you towards the bar, averting any further stare-off between them.

The reunion banquet continues with slideshows and fun photo memoirs of the years that your class attended the school. Several embarrassing photos strewn across the hall as Jungkook whipped out his phone to snap several quick pictures for later black-mailing purposes, despite your strenuous efforts to stop him. Both of you maintain a clear distance from Hoseok, avoiding him by all means, and the guys, especially Taehyung and Jimin did a better job of keeping him away. More so, Yoongi kept you and Jungkook company, the two men getting along more than you had hoped and, to some extent you were very happy about their compatibility. After several speeches by Namjoon, former class president of course, and former teachers who you were surprised weren’t retired and living somewhere closer to God’s waiting room, you slip away to the restroom to freshen up.
Squeezing Jungkook’s arm and giving him a quick peck on his cheek while excusing yourself from the table you sat at with the guys and their own dates, you walk towards the women’s room. Before you could push open the door, a hand tightly grips your wrist and pushes you against the wall. Before you could scream out, you realize the hand belonged to Hoseok and instead your fear was replaced with annoyance and exasperation.
As you struggled to free your wrist from his hand, he simply lets go with a smirk played on his face. Yet his eyes hold yours hostage and refraining from losing you push him away. As you begin to walk back, ignoring the urge to wash your hands and spend another moment near him, he stops you with a scoff.
“Y/n, you can’t look like this. No one will ever buy into how you look like this.”
As you turn back around, your expression is completely indifferent and at peace with yourself, all remnants of fear and humiliation dispelled as you finally realize his petty desperation, the pitiful attempt to bring you down like he had done before. Your mind was made and now you had someone you needed to get back to. Looking him square in the eyes, the most self-loving and indulgent smile playing at your lips, you challenge him.
“Oh yeah Hoseok? I’m a lawyer so sue me.”

Summary: AU. Reader is given the task of running a popular love advice internet show when her coworker is fired. Her cynical attitude toward love makes her offer some harsh advice, and more than a few hearts are caught in the aftermath. Will hers be one of them?

Out of all the places you thought you’d be this week, Steve Rogers’ apartment was not one of them.
It wasn’t really something you could have avoided. Natasha’s birthday party was in full swing, and you were expected to be there. You wanted to be there.
You weren’t alone, either.
Scott had agreed to come (after you promised there’d be single ladies around), and obviously Natasha and Steve were there. Clint and a couple other firemen had shown up for the free food and beer. Steve’s friend Bruce, an NYPD officer, was standing at Steve’s bookcase reading the spines of his book collection. Even Maria was over in the corner, grinning at someone you didn’t recognize.
And of course, Bucky Barnes was there.
Oh yes, Mr. James Barnes was sitting with you and Scott at the dining room table, watching in amusement as the two of you played Go Fish.
“Have you got any fours?” Scott asked, eyeing the cards in your hand.
“Nope.” You nodded to the pile. “Go fish.”
He groaned. “I’m never going to win. You only have three cards left.”
“Yes, be jealous of my Go Fish skills,” you replied dryly. “Also, be jealous of my ability to socialize at parties.”
Bucky snorted at that one. “That’s the one I’m jealous of.”
“Hey!” You glanced over at him, trying to keep a straight face. “I don’t see you doing any better, Bucko.”
“Who would want to miss this competition?” Bucky leaned back in his seat, grinning at you. “Does he have a ten? Find out on the next exciting turn of Go Fish!”
“Don’t tell him what cards I have!” You looked at Scott sharply. “Don’t even think about it, Lang.”
Scott rolled his eyes, handing over the ten of diamonds. “When does this party actually become fun?”
“We could do shots,” you suggested, shrugging one shoulder. “I haven’t had any in a while.”
“All right, shots coming up! No peeking.” Scott set his cards face-down on the table, then stood and went over to the makeshift bar, leaving you alone with Bucky.
Your eyes met his cautiously, and he offered you a small smile.
“How’s work going?”
“It’s fine. You?”
“Fine. They find the emailer yet?”
“No,” you replied, shaking your head. “Still on the loose.”
Bucky frowned. “There’s no reason for this to be taking so long. Did Natasha get the flash drive?”
“Yeah, but we don’t know anyone who can interpret stuff like that.”
Natasha had come through when she loaded all the documents she could find that were relevant to the show onto a flash drive, including the most recent email threats that she had received. Now it was just sitting in her bag, while the little investigation the two of you started made no progress whatsoever.
You watched Bucky glance around the room until his eyes landed on his cop buddy. “Hey, Bruce?” he called out. “Come here for a second?”
Bruce, a short but intimidating man, stepped over to the table. “Barnes,” he greeted Bucky. His eyes flickered to you, but only for a second.
“Bruce, this is Y/N. She’s a friend of mine, and she and Natasha have been having a lot of trouble from an email stalker sending threatening messages to them. Think you might be able to have a look at what they’ve collected?”
“Sure,” Bruce replied. “I think I’d rather be making myself useful than being here, anyways. Do you have copies of the emails?”
“It’s in Natasha’s bag. Let me get it.” You stood up and wandered over to Natasha’s bag. When her eyes met yours from across the room, you mouthed the words ‘flash drive’ and pointed to the bag, and she nodded her approval.
Once you had it, you handed it over to Bruce. “These are just what we personally received, as far as I know. Mine had been forwarded to my personal email, so you’ll see that server trail.”
“Got it. It won’t be able to be used as evidence should you need a case against this person, but we can always subpoena with probable cause and reasonable suspicion.”  Bruce gripped the drive tightly, looking back at Bucky. “I’m gonna head over to the station now. Tell Nat I said bye, would you?”
“You got it, man. Thanks.” Bucky watched as Bruce turned and walked away, then looked up at you. “Progress at last.”
“Thank you. Hopefully he can find something.” You flopped back down into your seat.
“And hopefully Scott can find shots,” Scott spoke up, setting three small cups down on the table. “Oh wait, he just did.”
“So who was that guy you gave the flash drive to?” Nat asked, stifling a yawn.
The party had finally ended, and you were lounging on the sofa beside her and Steve, while Bucky sat in the chair adjacent to you. You had offered to stay after and help clean up, but Steve insisted that everyone have a seat and relax.
“It was Bruce,” Steve answered, glancing at his girlfriend. “I think you met him once before?”
“Oh, the cop? Does he normally take on stuff like this?”
“No, this is sort of off the record for now, but he’s got connections who can if he hits a wall.”
“Speaking of hitting a wall, I’m gonna head out,” you spoke up, feeling like you probably shouldn’t have done any shots. “I’m really tired. I hope you had a happy birthday, Natasha.”
“Sure. Thanks for coming.” Natasha stood up with you, giving you a warm hug.
You glanced at Steve. “Goodnight Steve! Good party.”
“Night, Y/N.”
You turned and were about to say goodnight to Bucky, but he stood up, too.
“Mind if I walk you home?”
Your first instinct was to refuse. First of all, you were a grown ass adult, and you could handle yourself on the streets of Brooklyn for the most part. Second, were you in a position to want a walk home from Bucky in particular?
But, you remembered your promise to be a better person, a forgiving person. You promised to be friends with him, and friends do nice things for each other.
“I don’t mind at all,” you said finally, offering him a small smile.
The two of you left Steve’s apartment and made your way down to the sidewalk, where you fell into step beside him.
“At least it stopped raining,” he commented, squinting up at the night sky.
You glanced up, too. You couldn’t really see stars this close to the city, but you imagined they were beautiful right about now. “Come on, Bucky, we’re past weather small talk, aren’t we?”
“I’m just trying to be the friend you need me to be.”
Bucky’s voice was soft, and you felt your heart clench a little. You nudged his elbow with yours. “You are. Thanks for walking me home.”
He looked over at you for a second, then set his gaze back on the sidewalk in front of him. “Any time.”
You sighed. “I’m just over this whole debacle, you know? It’s exhausting.”
“I can’t imagine how it must have felt, getting all those anonymous, hateful messages.”
The path back to your apartment would have led you past the charred building where the restaurant once stood, so you turned a block sooner than normal. Bucky followed, not missing a step, and he looked almost relieved.
“I can’t let it stop me from living my life,” you continued. “I have goals and plans, and I want to be helpful at the community center, and I don’t have time for that nonsense.”
“It could be a real threat, though, Y/N. We’ll just have to wait and see what Bruce finds.”
“What then?”
“I don’t know,” Bucky admitted. “But whoever it is, I’m gonna do my best to not let them get to you, okay? Steve and Bruce won’t let them, either.”
“It’s not just me now, it’s Natasha too. It was Leah before us.” Your eyes widened. “Oh my gosh, why didn’t I even think of that? Natasha and I had her on our list! Maybe one of us can ask Leah?”
“The girl in the job before you?” He scratched his jawline idly.
“Yeah! She might have been intimidated to keep quiet. What if she knows who it is?”
“What if it’s her, though?” Bucky shook his head at you. “I don’t think it’s a good idea to confront anyone until we have a solid lead by evidence.”
You were excited now, though. Sure, Leah was on the short list of suspects, but if you asked to meet her in a public place, maybe she would agree and spill the details. Your feet stopped moving as you pondered how to get a hold of her.
Bucky stopped short, too, looking back at you. “Y/N?”
“We’re here,” you pointed out, nodding at your building. “And I’ve got work to do. I have to see if someone has Leah’s contact information.”
“Come on, Y/N. It’s just not a good idea.” Bucky’s hands went into his pockets, and the face he was making showed just how frustrated you were making him.
Well, you were frustrated, too. You didn’t ask for any of this. “What is, though? Getting involved in that stupid show? Terrible idea. Not getting to know you before I let myself have feelings for you? That didn’t work out so well, either.”
Bucky recoiled as if you slapped him across the face. “I see. Well, I can’t stop you. I walked you home like I wanted. See you around, Y/N.”
He moved to brush past you, but you reached out and grabbed onto his jacket.
“Wait, I’m sorry. That was low.” You shook your head. “I’m just tired, and I’m upset over this whole email thing. I’m pissed that we haven’t found them yet. I didn’t mean it.”
“It’s fine, Y/N. I can see now that maybe being friends is too hard for both of us.”
Your brows furrowed in confusion. “How did you get that from me being snippy and tired?”
“Never mind. I’m gonna take off, so-”
“No, tell me,” you insisted. “You had to have a reason to react like that.”
“I, uh...” He gestured behind him. “Natasha told me you’ve been dating.”
Why the hell was she talking about it to Bucky? “I’ve been on a few dates, nothing special.”
“And from that outburst, you’re clearly not going to ever be able to move on from how we started, are you?” He let out a deep breath, turning away from you, his eyes searching the empty street in front of you for distractions.
You felt the sleepiness hit you again. “I’m trying here, Bucky. I said I would, didn’t I? I don’t know how else to go about it except to be friends first.”
Bucky’s expression softened when he looked back over at you. “Well I’m trying, too, Y/N. It’s all my fault, I know it, but...it hurts to see you and know you’re dating other people. It hurts that-“ His voice caught, and he looked away again, running hand through his hair.
“That what?” You shifted in front of him, staring into his blue eyes and wondering where exactly he was going with this.
“That it’s off the table for us,” he finished, looking down at his feet.
Was it, though?
You were dating around, desperately trying to find the same sort of …anything that you’d felt when you were with Bucky for that short time. You knew that after having those moments with him, the ones that felt real and that made your heart flutter, it would be hard to settle for anything less.
“It’s just been a few dates, Bucky. I’m not seeing anyone exclusively.”
Bucky looked up at you, this time with a little bit of hope burning in those eyes. “Why is that?”
You shrugged, not wanting to make anymore promises where he was concerned. “I’m keeping my options open.”
He found a way to move even closer to you, the corner of his mouth lifting slightly. “No spark with anyone else?”
“Sparks are overrated,” you shot back, feeling your face heat up. His proximity to you was causing your body to remember other things about your time with him, like the chemistry between you. “Sparks can cause fires, explosions even. Sparks aren’t always good.”
“Did you really just make an analogy like that to a fireman?” He let out a chuckle, and the laugh lines around his eyes made him look even more charming. “So cheesy, Y/N.”
“I’ll have to come up with a better one next time.” You were grateful for the subject change; you weren’t quite ready to decide whether or not the door was shut on that kind of relationship with him.
Bucky looked a little surprised. “Next time?”
“Yeah,” you shrugged. “Friends, remember?”
He studied you carefully for a second, before nodding. “Friends.”
You smiled again, then turned to go inside your apartment building. “Goodnight Bucky. Thanks for the walk home.”
“Goodnight, Y/N.”
Once you were safely inside the door, you turned to look at him again. He was still standing there, smiling brightly back at you.
Yeah, you definitely weren’t ready to give up just yet.
The sound of your smoke detector blaring from the kitchen woke you up in a panic.
Your first thought was that you hadn’t replaced the battery in a while. It was on your to-do list on the fridge, but with your old job and new job, you just kept forgetting.
You threw the blankets off and reached for your robe, sliding your bare feet into the fuzzy slippers Natasha had given you last Christmas. You trudged sleepily out into the hall, the sound getting louder as you got closer to the kitchen.
You paused, eyes wide, when you realized you could smell smoke. It took you seconds to run to the kitchen, where you saw your window had been smashed in and your curtains were on fire. There was a trail of debris and muddy footprints that led to the living room.
The only thing you could do now was call for help. You tried not to panic as you ran back to your bedroom and grabbed your phone, dialing 911.
”9-1-1. What’s your emergency?”
“My name is Y/N, and my apartment is on fire! It looks like someone broke in through the window in the kitchen from the fire escape. I think it was intentional! I don’t know if they’re still in the apartment or not!” You quickly rattled off your address, staring out at the hallway where the light from the flames in the living room was now dancing on the walls.
“Okay, ma’am. Try to remain calm. Do not go near the fire. I’m dispatching local fire and police to your apartment. Stay on the line with me, all right?”
“Okay,” you replied, your voice wavering. You were scared for sure. This was that damn threat being carried out, you just knew it. If only you hadn’t ever taken that stupid job, if only you-
“Y/N?”
You turned at the sound of Bucky shouting your name, so grateful to hear his voice. “Bucky, I’m back here,” you yelled back, before remembering the woman on the phone. “The firemen are here,” you told the dispatcher. “I’m going to hang up now, thank you.” You pressed end before she could reply, and ran back out into the hallway.
Bucky, Steve, and a couple other fireman you didn’t recognize were there in full gear, but they didn’t see you just yet.
You held up your arm to block the smoke as they started to put out the fire using a long hose from the hallway. Another hose was being dragged through the open window in the living room. You could barely make out the shape of another fireman on a ladder.
“Bucky!” you shouted again, trying not to choke as you stepped closer to the living room.
Finally, Bucky must have noticed you in the hallway on the other side of the fire. He called your name again, but you were now coughing so hard you doubled over.
“I got you, Y/N! I got you! I’m gonna get you out of here. Hang on!” You felt pressure on your arms when he reached for you.
Bucky’s deep voice was the last thing you heard before you blacked out.
