List of anime that influenced me
While watching CDawgVA talk about the anime that influenced him, I got to thinking of what has influenced me. I’m older than many fans now, so what I grew up with isn’t what everyone else grew up with.
1) Sailor Moon
This show was the first real anime show I ever watched, though I had watched “anime” when I was younger in Voltron and Akira. However, they didn’t have nearly as strong an impact on me as Sailor Moon. I heard about it from one of my friends, and she was the kind of overly obsessed fantard that makes you cringe when you think of anime fans, but that came a bit later. I was in 6th grade and she told me I should try watching Sailor Moon in the morning. So I did.
I was instantly hooked. The girly clothes, the magic, the romance, the daring and mysterious Tuxedo Mask... I was in love! And so I got as many Sailor Moon things as I could get my little hands on. I got the small dolls, I also managed to get a hold of an Artemis plush that got ruined, and a big Sailor Venus doll. I really, really wanted a Tuxedo Mask doll, because good God he was pretty, but I could never find him.
Over the years, I frequented anime stores, or Japanimation as we called it. I got a couple of Sailor Moon CDs, one of which was an import from Japan. I got a couple of imported manga from Japan that I could never read. And when the manga started being translated by Mixx Entertainment, I got the Mixx Manga magazine, which was kind of like Shoujo Beat or Shonen Jump except they smashed both the Shonen manga in with the Shoujo manga. I think I sold my copies to Half-Price ages ago because I needed whatever money they were willing to give me for it. And when I saw that Mixx was finally putting out the manga volumes for $10, I got my grandma to buy them for me. I was in high school when they were coming out then.
I learned to draw anime style by copying Sailor Moon’s style. My first attempts were awful, but I kept trying. I had a Sailor Moon character of Sailor Neptune way before I ever knew about the outer senshi showing up later in the series. (she was Serena’s sister and showed up to take Tuxedo Mask.) And later in 6th grade, my too obsessive friend not only claimed she had written a script for a Sailor Moon play that I was to play Sailor Jupiter in, but that, over the phone, she claimed she was turning into Sailor Moon when she looked into the mirror. And that she was having adventures in the mirror while talking to me on the phone. As I said: too obsessed.
Needless to say, Sailor Moon is one of my staples. It broke my heart when I had to sell my old Mixx manga Sailor Moon volumes and the newer ones that I had collected so that I could get some money. It’s okay. One day I will get them again.
2) Tenchi Muyo! or Tenchi Universe
I had not watched a lot of anime after Sailor Moon. There just wasn’t a lot that interested me and no real way of watching it unless I convinced my grandma to pay for it. I think I was in high school when Tenchi Muyo! showed up on Cartoon Network. I know I was thrilled to learn that Cartoon Network was airing Sailor Moon, so I was still in Sailor Moon mode. Whenever it showed up, I was hooked. I got on that train and careened right off the cliff. I love this stupid show, but the manga is soooooooo much funnier. Oh so much! This is where a lot of my old humor came into play when drawing my Harry Potter fancomics in high school, as well as the numerous comics that I started, but dropped when I got bored with them. (Attention span of a gnat.) It became more fun to just tease the shit out of my friends who wanted to know how the stories ended, but were sorely disappointed when I didn’t bother with them.
When I started writing out my super long and stupid Harry Potter fanfictions, it was a few years after high school. Before then, I was drawing them in high school when I wasn’t doing homework. And lo and behold, I’d copy the page layouts from Tenchi Muyo! and Oh! My Goddess, but only Tenchi Muyo! got a lot of interest from me. It might have helped that Tenchi Muyo!’s humor is pretty on par with Monty Python and other such British comedies I had grown up on, so it wasn’t a huge stretch to start picking up on how to draw some of its humor.
3) Fullmetal Alchemist
If you’re a long time fan of mine, then you know that this was bound to show up. FMA was one of those animes that I had no idea about until I randomly caught it on Cartoon Network when I was staying over at my great grandpa’s house. I was with my grandma and we were taking care of her dad--my great grandpa--who was suffering from dementia among other problems. The rest of the family took turns taking care of him and accompanying him on trips so that he was never left alone for too long. He had a problem of ending up in trouble and never bothering to ask for help when he couldn’t get back up. Now, I knew about a few more anime at this time, because I had anime loving friends in high school and out of high school who knew of stuff to suggest to me. I’d watch it on Cartoon Network and be somewhat interested in it. I watched Cowboy Beebop, Trigun, Outlaw Star (which has one of the best anime closing themes I’ve ever heard omg)... I can’t remember anything else at the moment.
I turned on the TV and found cartoon network was playing its late night anime block and watched FMA. And never looked back. Now, while my love of FMA is not as apparent as my love of Sailor Moon, it’s still there. I made my own Edward and Alphonse Elric dolls, for crying out loud! I would get the manga and I loved the art style so much I started trying to incorporate it into my own a little, much the way it happened with Sailor Moon and Tenchi Muyo. I would sit and listen to the soundtracks I would get from one of my friends. I have a signed picture of Vic Mignogna that I have stored away in a nice, safe place. I’m a fan. And it still stays with me to this day. I spent so much time playing with Harry Potter and FMA with one of my friends that we blended them together.
Yeah. That’s right. My Mini-Erik series shows this bizarre shit in there and i will always be proud of how insane we got with it.
4) Princess Tutu
This one sounds goofy, and it is a little goofy, but it is so much deeper than you can possibly imagine. if you love magical girl stories as well as ballet, then you will love this. I love this. I LOVE THIS. This seriously came about when I found out that we had an anime channel. Back when my mom had a premium package for the cable, I could get free anime series to watch. I watched Pretear on there and a few other things, but what I took to the strongest was Princess Tutu. And trying to get my mom to sit and watch it with me because I know she will enjoy it if she gives it a chance was ridiculous. For some reason, she can’t handle anything where the characters have high pitched voices. She equates it to children’s voices and she can’t stand that. Not only that, but she, to this day, equates animated shit to cartoons for children. As I said, it’s fucking ridiculous to get her to watch this thing and enjoy it even though I know for a fact it has everything I know she will enjoy if she just stopped being a dumbass about it.
So this one has forever inflicted itself upon me. I still want to come up with a knight and princess like Fakir and Ahiru, but that will come when it comes. In the mean time, it will never leave me. Ever. I will always recommend it.
5) Fate/Stay Night (Fate series)
If you’re a long time fan of mine, you also know of my obsession with this series. It will never leave. NEVER. It always calls me back! Just like FMA, Princess Tutu, Tenchi, Sailor Moon, and a few others! But I think the most inspiring thing about the series is not so much the story, but the characters. Namely the heroes. See, I had a book I had taken from my great grandpa’s house upon his death. Actually, I had a lot of books that I had accumulated after his death, and all of them were mythology based. I staked a claim on those faster than you can blink. I have a Welsh Mythology book, an Irish mythology book, and two Scandinavian folk tale books that I got from his house. Well, I had read through the Irish one and enjoyed the Cattle Raid of Cooley and Cuchulainn, but it didn’t stick in my head. It was Fate’s Lancer that shoved that bastard right into my brain and he made a home there. I had always been a huge fan of King Arthur, and seeing a female King Arthur kinda weirded me out at first, but I liked the idea so much that I kept it for my own versions of King Arthur.
“The Dark Queen”, “The King’s Hound”, and “Hound of the Dark Earth” all came from utilizing the images of the characters of Lancer Cu and Saber Arthur, but using them in my own way. So even now I’m still playing with these stories, and it has everything to do with fate/Stay Night being a huge influence on me.
6) Axis Powers: Hetalia
Oh, Hetalia. We have a love/hate relationship, you and I. I love you to pieces, but your fans tend to be fucking psychotic and/or stupid. Or at least the ones I always encounter minus one of my besties. My bestie Alex introduced me to Hetalia and I keep coming back to it while she’s kind of stopped caring. I always come back to things I enjoy, such as Harry Potter, Narnia, Lord of the Rings, King Arthur, yadda yadda.
I instantly fell in love with America and continue to this day. I also fell in love with England, and later France, Germany, Spain, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, China, Russia, Lithuania, and Japan. To this day, I have characters that are at least in some part influenced by the characters of Hetalia. My character Jimmy Stark was influenced by America, my character Bastian Wylde came from England, same with Fabian Santiago from Spain. I think even Darius Lis came from my usual portrayals of Lithuania in roleplays. How these came about was from a lot of role playing with Alex in various stories, including, but not limited to, Twilight and Harry Potter. We always paired Alex’s version of India with England, so in Twilight they became vampire lovers and in Harry Potter they were students. And then we used India in The Witch’s Son/Phantom of the Opera type shenanigans back when I was just trying to figure out how to make The Witch’s Son work.
However, I stayed far from the fandom outside of making overly dramatic fanfictions of a dumb parody cartoon. I know I had at least two Mexican idiots try to tell me that the Texas Revolution was America stealing Texas from Mexico instead of Mexico being an abusive dickwad and Texas raising a shotgun to his face and saying “No More.” Or that Palestine would have never picked on a young Israel, even though Palestine, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and a number of other places around Israel all declared war on Israel for simply existing. Israel won its independence in fire and blood, and then kept on surviving every single time these same nations never learned their lesson and declared they would “drive the Jews into the sea” ie kill them all. Or that America was never a conservative nation. However, they’re small fry in comparison to the bizarre fantards on gaiaonline. Had at least one of them molest my America and then, when I played such a thing straight and had America scream “BAD TOUCH! I NEED AN ADULT!” they started screeching about “straight helatians” being impossible and “straight hetalians” in their fandom. Like... dude? Seriously? The boys liking Hungary’s tits and ass don’t connect with you anywhere?
7) Hellsing
This one is more for two characters, specifically Alucard and Anderson. I played Alucard for years and then finally wanted to incorporate him in something without like... actually doing Alucard. If you know me, you know what I’m referring to. Anderson, however, kind of more just... visually influenced another character that has absolutely zero to do with him... though I suppose you could make the connection because they’re both priests that murder. The image in my head was more of the scarecrow variety, though, with Anderson’s long arms being more lanky, as well as his body. So perhaps a little of Batman’s Scarecrow fell in there somewhere, too.
8) Fushigi Yuugi
I literally only heard about this when I was... I think high school and then got out and ran into it later because of my bestie Amanda. This one is one of the lesser influences, but I suppose it still counts because some of it still lingers with me today.
9) Ouran High School Host Club
A silly manga and a silly anime that makes the Captain a super happy person. This influenced more because of the stereotype characters in the same way Hetalia did. I’ve been noodling with the idea of romances surrounding similar types, including twins with a chick. We’ll see where that goes... if it goes anywhere.
10) Anything CLAMP has created
Not gonna lie... I was a huge CLAMP fiend when I got out of high school. While I don’t really give a shit about the yaoi in the stories, my interest has always been in the cute, girly, adventure, or the DESIGNS. Jesus fuck, I would kill to be able to design some of the outfits they design. I’ve never been that imaginative with clothing. The detail put into the designs made me try to do the same with my own artwork, for good or ill. And the art styles were ones I emulated, particularly from eeh... Angelic Layer and Tsubasa Chronicle. I, in fact, used to rely on the manga from Tenchi, Sailor Moon, and Tsubasa Chronicle to get ideas for page layouts and whatnot when I drew comics. I incorporated a lot of it into my drawing style and then let it relax into something else when I finally got bored with keeping up with CLAMP.

MAGT (My Original Story that doesn’t have a very good title yet) Chapter 1
(A/N: Depending on the feedback from this, I may post chapter two. Enjoy!)
It’s so quiet in the waiting room. Far too quiet for me to be calm. It’s a struggle to just breathe, my breath so obvious in the silence. I’m being too loud, too noisy in this silent place. It would be easier to remain calm if I were the only one here. Unfortunately, I’m sharing the small waiting room with a hyperactive blonde boy. He keeps tapping his pen against the metal chair he’s sitting on. Damn him, it only makes it worse, the stupid noise ringing in my ears, all too much to bear. The noise, the breathing, the lack of sound...it’s all echoing, ringing, and I can’t think. I try to stay calm, to not curl up into a tight ball as I glance at the clock directly above the metal door that leads to the rest of the academy. I mentally curse, as I’ve been sitting in this cold metal chair for the past two hours! Does nobody here have any sense of time? I run a hand through my long black hair, and sigh as I catch my reflection in a mirror.
My light blue eyes stare back at me, studying my appearance from my band shirt to my worn sneakers, from ghostly pale skin to the nervous jump of my leg ever so often.
The pen falls to the ground, and I jump. I stare at the ground, ignoring the boy as he sheepishly retrieves it and returns to his chair. Avoiding eye contact, I stare at the door, waiting for whoever leads us through. I jump again as the boy clears his throat. I look over at him.
“D-Do you need something?”
“No, I just want to talk!” Talk? What the hell is he thinking?! I’m a total stranger, this can’t be happening. No, no. It’s not, it’s not happening…
If you couldn’t tell by now, I hate social interactions as much as Westboro Baptist hates homosexuals.
“I-I’m Sunny Jilt! Who’re you?” I look away, deciding it would be worse to ignore him. I might as well answer.
“I’m...Styx. Styx Wrought.”
“Nice to meet you, Styx!” He beams at me as I nod, looking away. Just as he’s about to continue the conversation, the door I’ve been staring at swings open, and we stand up simultaneously. I grab my bags and suitcase, shifting awkwardly as I stare at the woman who enters through the door.
She’s wearing a putrid pink sweater that matches her equally hideous knee-length skirt, with a nametag: “Dolores”. If Harry Potter has taught me anything, I should not trust this woman. But then again, this is not some magical book.
“Sunny Jelt and Styx Wrought?” She smiles, a sickly sweet smile as Sunny nods, rocking back and forth on his heels. It’s annoying to watch, but I can’t complain-I’m picking at the skin around my nails. It’s not as noticeable...until I bleed. I should really get some gloves.
I shake my head, earning a stare from Dolores and Sunny. Solemnly, I look up. “Yes, I’m Styx Wrought. Where do I take my baggage?” She turns to glance at my torn and dirty bags, wrinkling her nose at their horrid state.
“Leave them here. They will be taken to your rooms by workers.” I nod, only keeping my backpack, which causes Dolores and me to have a silent stare down. I win, since there’s no way in hell that I’m leaving it. She sighs, and turns to write on her clipboard before turning and walking down the hallway. Sunny looks at me before rushing after her, and I follow him.
The halls are solid white with white tiles and bright lights, with hallways branching off, and hallways branching off of those, like an endless maze. I struggle to remember the way out, but soon enough I give up, glancing around occasionally at the monotonous scenery. I pause, noticing security cameras following us.
Is it intentional? Do they not want us to know how to leave, how to escape? Why are they watching us? I see everything clearer, but I struggle, wanting so desperately to trust that everything’s okay, just like how Grimm said it is. Sunny clearly wants to talk, but what am I going to talk about? The older brother I haven’t seen in three years, the strange circumstances that lead to me coming here? Oh, I know, I’ll just mention my dead parents. That’s a perfect conversation starter. It takes a few minutes to realize that we’ve stopped, and I look at Dolores. She stares back, that disgustingly fake smile still on her face. “Sunny, you’ll be going with Ms. Smith to get your paperwork filled out, and then to your uniform. Styx, you’ve already been processed when your brother came, so we’ll just go straight to the uniforms. Come along.” Sunny looks at me curiously, obviously surprised that I have a brother. He’s led off by a woman in a white pant suit, and I follow Dolores down yet another hallway. We stop at a set of double doors, and she scans an ID, the doors opening automatically.
We step through, and my eyes are assaulted by colored clothing. Dolores clears her throat, and a tall man with shaggy brown hair and a tan complexion comes bustling out, mouth full of pins.
“Oh, hello!” He removes a few from his mouth, waving with the same hand.  “Nice to see you again, Dolores! And you must be Styx, wonderful to meet you! I’m Mr. Prastickition, but you can call me Prast. Come to the back, I have your uniform. We asked your Aunt for your measurements, so all I need to do is sew the patch on. What’s your mark?” I look at him before realizing what he’s talking about. I pull up my long sleeve that covers my hands, and show him the dark blue tear-drop shaped birthmark on my wrist. He hums and grabs a matching patch, stitching it onto a light blue button up top.
“So, what aspect of water do you control?”
Aspect?
“I-I don’t understand. I suppose...all?” He pauses for a moment before nodding, resuming his sewing.
“I suppose that does make sense, after all, we don’t have someone like you in the water category yet.” I nod, pretending to understand as I glance around. So far, the uniform is a collared blue button up shirt, with black jeans, and black boots. That looks seriously uncomfortable. He finishes the sewing, and hands me the uniform, pointing to a small room.
“Tell me if you need anything.” I nod, and walk over, locking the door behind me. The room is covered with various mirrors, and I sigh, beginning to undress. Goodbye, My Chemical Romance band shirt.
After changing, I fold my clothes and place them in the matching blue bag I was given with the uniform. I unlock the door and step out, scanning the room for the man...Mr. Prast. I hear his loud voice echoing around the room, and make my way to the front where he’s chatting with Dolores. He turns and smiles, happy with way the clothes fit.
“Perfect! Now to make a few more copies of that, and some others for performances. While in your dormitory, you can wear your own clothing and pajamas. You said you’re hydrokinetic, yes? So...you’ll be staying with Bodaway, Avani, Althea, and Enlil. Bodaway is pyrokinetic, Avani is geokinetic, Althea is vitakinetic, and Enlil is aerokinetic.” I look at him confused, but nod, and follow Dolores out of the room with his goodbyes cut short by the closing of the metal door. I have the feeling no one would explain anything anyway, even if I asked.
I glance around nervously, becoming more anxious as we get closer to the tall elevators that will lead to the dormitories. Dolores scans her key card again, causing the elevator to open, and we step in. I pick at the skin around my nails, and I see Dolores glancing at me in disgust. I roll my eyes, and freeze as the doors slide open, my breath becoming shorter. I follow Dolores in a daze, feeling as though I’m watching myself follow her.
We arrive at another set of metal doors, and she slides her key card yet again. The doors open, and we step through into what appears to be a lounge area. There are small glass tables surrounded by fuzzy orange chairs, and a few TVs scattered throughout the room. Dolores hands me a matching key card with my name, birthdate, and face on it. In big blue letters, it reads “HYDROKINETIC/13”. She indicates for me to scan it, which I do, and the doors slide open.
I step in, looking around as I notice my bags outside another single metal door, with my name on it. We seem to be in a lower level, a living room of sorts, with two couches and a large TV in the center. Up a few stairs is the kitchen, and to either side are doors. The side that mine is on has two doors, whereas the other side has three. I turn to ask Dolores what I should do, but she had already left.
I walk up the steps quietly, and scan the key card on...my door. Once the door opens, I grab my bags and tug them inside, dropping them on the floor as the door slides shut. I glance around the room, feeling a slight draft from the metal fan on the ceiling. I flick on a light, and the room appears to be rather...plain. The walls are grey, as are the doors. A small metal bed is in one corner of the room, and another small TV adjacent to it. To my right is a door leading to...the bathroom, with a grey sink, a cramped shower, and a small toilet. On the left is a rather large closet with a few hooks for coats. I sigh, and begin to unpack.
Inside the closet is also a bedsheet, which I place on the mattress along with the matching sheets. I pull out my Hetalia blanket, and lay it on the bed, straightening it. After making the bed, I hang up and fold my clothes, and place the books on the shelves. After a few hours I’m done, and I collapse on the bed, closing my eyes until I hear a knock at the door.
“Hey! You’re Styx, yeah? I’m Bodaway, time for dinner!” I stretch, and walk over to the door, straightening the uniform shirt as I open it. He smiles, motioning towards the table.
“I hope you like pizza, because that’s what we’re having! The information package said you’re lacto-vegetarian, so we got cheese pizza and salad!” He’s very...loud. Does he ever brush that mess of black hair? I notice a few others around the table. A solemn girl with brown hair pulled back into a ponytail nodding at me.
“Hello, Styx. I’m Althea.” Someone who looks similar to her jumps behind me, smiling.
“And I’m Avani! It’s nice to meet you!”
I nod a bit, nervous.
“Enlil stays in his room for dinner, so you’ll see him tomorrow.” I smile at Althea, picking at my nails again. We grab the pizza, and sit around the table awkwardly, eating quietly.
“So...Styx, why don’t you tell us some stuff about you?”
I freeze nervously. “Um...I’m thirteen, I enjoy reading, and...I have an older brother named Grimm?” Was that enough? What if they ask more? Shit, this is an awkward situation. What am I going to do if they ask about my family, or my home life? This is not good…
“Wait, Grimm? Grimm Wrought? I told you guys they were related!” Bodaway looks around triumphantly.
“Styx, does your brother go here?”
“Of course he does, Althea!”
“Yes...he goes here.” Bodaway looks more serious, and rather nervous. By the way the others look at him, I can tell it’s not an expression he dons often.
“Are...are you sure that’s him? No, of course you are, he’s your brother. But...I wouldn’t advise you to be around him. Judging by how you spoke of him, he’s probably changed since you last saw him.” I wrinkle my brow in confusion. While being rather serious, Grimm has never been someone that people dislike. In fact, it has helped us many times that others tend to trust him more than they should.
“What do you mean?”
“Well...he’s just a bit, uh, cruel.”
“Come on Bodaway, that can’t be him, he’s never like that!” He glares at me.
“Well, that’s how he is. You haven’t seen him in years, yeah? I’m pretty sure we know what he’s like more than you.” I scoff and roll my eyes.
“Please. I’m certain that I know him more than a few of his classmates. Hell, you’re not even in his classes! How old are you, fifteen? He’s sixteen, so he’s in a class over you!” Bodaway scowled, and stood up.
“Oh yeah? He’s been hanging out with that group of...of freaks, monsters, for the past few years, of course he’s changed! Why are you so damn stubborn?! I’m just trying to make sure that our newest member doesn’t get killed!” Seriously, what the hell? I’m not even sure if we can trust you, with you being his sister and everything, but I’m still trying to protect you!”
“Well you can stop that, Grimm is my brother, and I’d trust him with my life!”
“Enlil, you’re awake! Styx is here already, pizza’s on the counter.” I could tell she wanted to change the subject. Enlil glances at me and nods before walking over to get pizza.
“You arrived just in time, Styx. School starts in two days, I hope you’re prepared.” I nod quickly, not wanting anyone to think I’m slow. Enlil sits with us, quickly chewing his pizza, although I notice he begins with the crust. The entire dinner is awkwardly silent, Bodaway still silently fuming. In fact, is that literal smoke coming from his chair…?
“Bodaway, you’re on fire again!” Avani sighs and my eyes widen. What the hell?!
“Crap!” He runs to his room, and I see that his shirt is very literally on fire. I suppose he really is pyrokinetic…
“Don’t worry, that happens all the time,” Enlil states calmly, picking apart the toppings on his pizza. “And about the shouting match, he’ll calm down soon enough.”
After a few minutes, I quickly finish, and put my dishes in the dishwasher.
“Styx, do you want to stay? We’re watching Sherlock!” I nod slowly as I see Enlil encouraging me to do so. I follow them over to the couches surrounding the large TV, and we begin to watch A Study in Pink. About halfway through, Bodaway walked over to us and sat next to me with a change of clothing. After the show, he turned to me.
“Hey...Styx. I may not agree with you about your brother but...well, you’ll see what I mean later. I’m not going to argue about this, and while I can’t trust you yet, I will be civil and give you a chance, okay?” He looks away. Clearly he’s not very accustomed to apologizing.
“It’s alright, Bodaway. Thank you. Goodnight everyone, I’m going to bed now.”
I walk away as a chorus of goodnights follow me. Once the door slides shut and I’m safely inside my room I sigh, and quickly change into my pajamas. What could they possibly mean about Grimm changing? I hope he’s alright. We’ve been through so much, I hope nothing’s happened to him.
I flick off the light and climb into bed, knowing that I won’t sleep. I roll over on my side, staring at the wall as I think about the day.
“She seems to be settling in well, Miss.” The woman nods slowly, her dark face shadowed by the hooded coat she is wearing.
“I agree. She appears to be very adaptable, which will most certainly play in her favor later on.”
“Are you concerned, Miss? When will the plan begin?” A sigh echoes from the chair, the woman shifting in clear exasperation.
“Several years, now. We must be patient, and prepare her. After all, it wouldn’t be fair to throw her to the wolves without any proper training, now would it?” The security guard shakes his head, and she continues. “Although, I highly doubt she’ll last long, given the fact that she’s the youngest here...not to mention that while she may seem to be in control of her emotions, I know for a fact she is repressing them, and in turn, any sort of ability she once had. This is clearly due to her past, as I have shared with you. You remember, correct? I hope you haven’t forgotten so soon.”
“Yes, Miss! I remember, you specified to all of us!” She nods, taking a sip of whatever is in her glass before resting it on the table beside her.
“Of course you do. I’d be gravely disappointed in you if you didn’t. I have a lot to think about, and how we are going to go about her training without her hydrokinesis. You are dismissed.” The guard nods, and before he leaves he pauses, watching her monitor the TV that clearly depicts Styx’s room. He remembers the principal, the woman sitting in front of him, had ordered a camera to be placed in the televisions within the dormitories. They had been warned that Styx is paranoid, yet she seems to be rather naive to him. Not to mention the fact that she can’t use her abilities, she’s so weak.
“She’s stronger than she looks. She’s survived this long, with all of the difficulties she’s faced after her parents’ murder. Surely you read the file?” He nods quickly again, anxious to not disappoint. “I have a lot to think about right now. Leave.” He nods sharply, and turns to walk to the door.
“One more thing.”
“Yes, Miss?” Her lips curled into a sinister smile, clutching her glass again. He felt himself shiver despite his best efforts to remain still. No matter how long he worked here, he could never become relaxed. She not only intimidated him; no, she terrified him. She took a long sip before lowering the glass yet again, crossing her legs as the cloak shifts beneath her.
“Keep her away from Grimm.”

I was writing something for someone who I beta and it turned into this big motivational speech that might help others, so I decided to post it for the one person who needs it.
(Um, this probably isn't the best, but here goes nothing!) Hello, Littwink here! Combining sentences is important because: ~It demonstrates the connection between (or among) similar and/ or continuing ideas. ~It allows for greater variety in sentence structure. I believe that it is important to note and use sentence combining strategies when writing as it illustrates a deeper awareness of what you write and gives your writing a complexity that it would otherwise lack. It shows your reader what you are capable of as a writer and helps smoothen out the story; it shows that you have mastery over what you write and illustrates to your audience that you can take charge. It’s simple psychology really-- by showing that you are in charge of your writing you demonstrate that you know what you are doing and where you are going ---> your reader will then give you the power to lead them into your imagined events = your readers will rely on your story. My best example for those in the HP/LV fandom is ObsidianPen. Her series, Haunted and Hunted, has become widely acclaimed due to her mastery of language, her engaging plot, the long chapters she pulled out (each is from 5,000 to 12,000 words), etc. (In case you haven’t read or been actively in its fanbase,) When Hauntingly was active, OP had a fanbase (which included me) that became obsessed about the story. It developed into “The Church of Hauntingly” in which Acarna (a fellow fan) was declared the official Pope and ObsidianPen was who we worshipped and yeah, I’m getting off topic but it was pretty amazing (and bizarre) to watch and be a part of. The main point is that this is the aspiration of every writer: to create a widespread story complex enough to warrant discourse on it. This is not to say that this is something to judge yourself on: OP has written plenty of other stories and has enough experience to create such a masterpiece. So DO NOT take this by comparing yourself to her. DO NOT rate yourself against any other stories or tropes. Each story and writer is unique, and even if sometimes you feel as if your story plot has been done before, do it anyways! Don’t be dissuaded! If everyone never wrote anything because it’s been done before, we’d be stuck in a Fandom with basically no stories because “the Muggle AU has been done already” or “the time traveling trope is one of the biggest Tomarry plots” etc. And if you seem to not be getting much attention on your fic, don’t be ashamed or embarrassed. There are a number of reasons that this may happen; sometimes it takes time for your story to spread around. Alternatively, DO NOT LISTEN to any flamers! At all. Unless they are giving you a reason or constructive criticism, it is total bullshit. Even the best of writers experience bad reviews or flames at times, so do not let this stop you from writing! Don’t forget that your Fandom and fanfiction is valid and a wonderful world to be in, whether you are in a big fandom such as Harry Potter or the Sherlock Fandom, a more obscure one like Winnie the Pooh or Thomas the Train (yes it exists!), or a dying one such as Hetalia or Rise of the Guardians. And if your trope hasn’t shown up yet-- kudos to you! You can be the first, the founder! Just be yourself and have fun!
