What's this? Unifications and Kwami swaps?!?
Part 2 of the unifications
While sometimes I can come up with ideas on what a unified miraculous should look like right away, like with Shadow Moth and Dragonfly, other times I struggle way less when I draw out the characters with Both miraculous first.
Viper Noir was kind of the exception since I very intentionally didn't want it to look like Aspik that much.
But for these designs I really felt it was important to get my designs out on paper first. SO! Let's talk Kwami Swaps and then we'll get to the unifications.
Since Pegasus already exists, I couldn't call Marinette with the horse that, but according to my brief research Arion is the name of one Pegasus form Greek mythology.
Much like with Chloe as Champion I base Marinette's on equestrian uniforms, and I've always treated blue as the horses accent color since that's the color of the Voyage portals. Keep the wings cause it both keeps with the greek theme and they look cute. And some little braids in her hair like some horses have to top off her Pony-tail. Also, assume the glasses are like- attached to the mask.
Lapin Chanceux (Lucky Rabbit) was the first design I did, albeit on paper, to figure out what I was going to do. I wanted to make her look different from both Bunnix's so I dropped the dark blue that I used for them and brought in more white and light blue.
I do like giving the rabbit holders some sort of poof around their hands or feet since it invokes the feel of a rabbits foot. In the Bunnix's it was around their arms, Marinette its her legs. The pom poms by her ears were added after the drawings was initially declared done but their so cute it was EASILY worth it.
Onto the unifications, I've actually redesigned both Pegabug and Pennybug before. And the first Pegabug redesign is actually still up on my youtube channel as a speedpaint. Obviously the designs and my artstyle have changed drastically though.
I cut the brown from the design entirely, instead opting to darken the red greatly. But keeping the white accents which were in both my Ladybug and Arion's designs. I also moved the wings up to her pony-tail both because they slightly resemble horse ears like that, and in preparation for adding the rabbit.
Whenever I unify the Ladybug I cut down on the spots drastically because they can make it feel really cluttered. But I tried to keep them in places that made sense. Alluding to buttons on her coat, the ones at the ends of the stripes down her leg, which I kept from my first design. And giving her spots on her hands, just cause. Also got some shoulder pad action because I wanted to-
And finally Lady Luck. Because Pennybug sounds stupid- I assumed at the time we first saw her that Pennybug wasn't called Lady Luck because they were saving it for if when unified the Ladybug and Cat. But no, that's Bug Noir, which also sounds dumb.
So we're going Lady Luck. Since Horses, Rabbits, and Ladybugs are all associated with good Fortune.
That being said- no one should be allowed to combine 3 miraculous on the sole pretense that they almost always look bad. Pennybug looked bad, Shadow Noir (also stupid name) looked bad, Monarch is his own can of worms, but- well you'll see.
I knew I wanted to more the glasses to the top of Lady Lucks head, just because I was kinda getting sick of the normal glasses. Assume just the lenses are the miraculous and the frame changes for the user. Now they are attached to goggles- not that you can really tell because they have black straps on Marinette's dark hair.
The ear/wings were the only thing I knew some people liked about Pennybug so I kept those, albeit without the black ring around the blue. And add white to the ponytail gradient. White gloves because they looked good, and I almost always give Marinette opera gloves.
She gets a few more smaller spots since the rabbit also uses them. And combine the riding coat with the the- it's not really a shrug but I don't know what to call it? Keep the wide pants because why not, and make the red a darker cool red. The blue could have also been changed to better match the pallet but the vibrant blue is an accent I use on all the miraculous' usually so it got to stay. So long as the suit is red I think it still reads as a Ladybug.
Last thing to note are the eyes. Lady Luck's eye look freaky because she's using three miraculous and probably shouldn't. And Lapin's eye's are pink/red with white pupils because my family actually had californian rabbits at one point and they all looked like that in photo's.
Bonus- here's the doodles I did years ago for Pennybug
and Pegabug

Hey hey sorry I haven’t updated in a bit, I’ve been busy with life stuff! As an apology, have some more of my interpretations of the Greek goddesses (notes below)
Hestia
- For Hestia I wanted her to be dressed very modestly. I’ve seen a lot of interpretations of Hestia wearing a veil over her face which I liked, but may change in the future for more practical reasons
- I imagine her face is always flushed from tending the fire on Olympus
Hecate
- The reason why Hecate looks like more of a fusion god is because I believe she was an import god by Hesiod. Hesiod’s father was not native to Greece so it is speculated that Hecate (or a goddess very similar to Hecate) and practices of witchcraft were incorporated by Hesiod into the Theogony as an ode to his heritage
- Her eyes are rimmed with kohl and her jewelry is sharp in case she needs to draw blood
- Hecate’s clothing, while Greek in nature, has influences from West and South-East Asia as well since that’s the area where Hesiod’s father hails from
Persephone
- Though not pictured here, Persephone is going to have curly red hair and (of course) lots and lots of freckles
- I wanted her build to be a mix between curvy and stocky. For the story I’m working on, Persephone helps Demeter with work in the mortal realm for several years before getting taken by Hades. I also wanted her build to directly contrast her sister’s build
- Persephone was drawn in garb I imagined her in as Queen of the Underworld. She’s not happy about it
Demeter
- I love big noses. Demeter has a “bigger” nose
- I also wanted to give Demeter high cheekbones like Hera
- I feel like Demeter would often wear clothing suited for field work or labour on a farm perhaps? Basically clothing that’s suited for a goddess but nothing as extravagant as Hera or even Aphrodite
Despoine
- I have 2 versions of Despoine depicted below: pre- kidnapping of Persephone and post- kidnapping of Persephone
- Unfortunately since there’s literally no information on Despoine, I took a lot of artistic liberties with her. I ultimately settled on making her the daughter of Demeter and sister of Arion and Persephone since that version of her best fit with the story I had in mind
- Opposite of Persephone, she’s tall and lanky, but not boney
- Since she’s the daughter of Demeter and Poseidon, I gave her shells and pearls to decorate her pre- kidnapping
- Her post- kidnapping clothing is very modest like Hestia’s. She also currently has a veil to cover her face though that also may change
- I also, like many other people in their artistic interpretations of Despoine, associate her with winter and snow. Note: this is not a confirmed detail about her

0. GENIE IN A BOTTLE
( genie in a bottle, jay )
long ago, in a realm shrouded by time, there existed a prince whose heart was filled with greed. this prince, known as arion, was the only son of a wealthy king and queen who lavished him with treasures beyond imagination.
among these treasures was a magnificent lamp, crafted from pure gold and encrusted with fine jewels, yet it lay neglected in a corner of his chamber.
one fateful day, as he carelessly feasted on a banquet fit for kings, a morsel of food slipped from his hand, landing on the ornate lamp. intrigued, arion reached to clean it, and as he rubbed the lamp, a great whirlwind of light erupted before him.
from within emerged a woman, a powerful genie, her presence radiating with both grace and authority.
defying all laws of nature and gods, she could grant any wish the owner of the lamp wanted, but only if the master could truly understand the meaning of desire.
at first, the prince, blinded by ambition, dismissed her warnings. with a flourish, he made his first wish. “i wish to command the strongest troops in all the lands!”
kingdoms trembled at the sight of his might. with the help of the genie, the prince owned more land that he could think of.
emboldened by his newfound power, arion crafted his second wish. “i wish to be the most handsome and desirable man in existence!” the transformation was miraculous, he became a vision of beauty, and soon a throng of enchanting women from every corner of the realm gathered at his castle, yearning for his affection, offering themselves to him.
but as the days turned to weeks, weeks into months, and months into years. the prince’s insatiable thirst for power grew. he coveted not just admiration but absolute dominion over all. ignoring the lessons of humility, he prepared to make his final wish. “i wish to have the power of a god!” he declared, his voice echoing with unbridled ambition.
but in his fervor, arion failed to grasp the enormity of what he sought. the moment his wish was uttered, the air crackled with energy, swirling around him like a tempest. the power surged into his fragile mortal form, an overwhelming force that no mere human could withstand. in a blinding flash of light, arion was consumed, his body shattering into countless stars that scattered across the night sky.
in the aftermath, y/n stood alone, the echo of his ambition fading into the cosmos. with a heavy heart, she returned to her realm inside the lamp, a silent guardian of the wishes granted and a keeper of the lessons learned.
the tale of prince arion and his genie became a legend whispered through the ages, a cautionary story of desire’s peril and the fragile nature of ambition.
and so, the stars twinkled with a haunting beauty, a reminder that even the mightiest of wishes can lead to one’s downfall, echoing through the hearts of those who dare to dream too boldly.
centuries later, in an oasis deep in a dessert, a man had skilledfully snuck in a temple, the long lost temple were inside laid the tomb of prince arion, searched by thousands of thieves and raiders.
he had finally found it, bypassing though the security and fool-traps, being surrounded in a room full of riches, precious stones, luxurious clothes and precious royal crowns.
he took out a scroll from his deep linen pants pocket, laying it down ontop of the stone tomb cover, and holding his torch near, black eyes skimming over the worn out drawing.
“i can’t believe it…” he breathed out, the drawing matched the lamp before him perfectly. this small artifact held the promise of transforming his life, of elevating him beyond the identity of a mere thief scavenging for the unattainable. it could make him a king.
jay took the lamp in his hands once again. still struck by the legendary object, he stepped back, accidentally unlocking the last singular trap.
suddenly, the ancient temple began to tremble violently, debris raining down around him as the ancient structure started to collapse. panic surged through him as he realized he had only moments to escape the crumbling ruins, no chance to collect the new found treasures.
he glanced at the lamp, and shook his head, not wanting to waste a wish to get out of here, he would escape in his own way.
admist the chaos, jay’s eyes darted around the room, searching for a way out. his sharp gaze landed on a tattered carpet draped over a pile of treasures, thinking it would maybe uncover a wooden door on the floor.
desperate, he lunged for it, but found no door.
as he grasped it madly, the carpet shimmered beneath his hands, vibrant colors swirling to life. to his astonishment, it began to lift off the ground, hovering just above the stone floor.
“is this real?” he muttered, hardly daring to believe his luck.
with the temple shaking around him, jay jumped onto the carpet, gripping its sides tightly. “take me out of here!” he commanded, and to his shock, it surged forward, darting through the collapsing chamber and out into the open air.
as they soared into the sky, the temple crumbled into nothingness behind him, drowning in the sand, never to be seen again.
the night soon fell in the dessert lands, as jay camped inside a cold cave, his belongings scattered near the magic carpet, in the darkness of the stone.
he hissed as he burned himself, but finally lit up a fire, and leaned back, his back hitting the hard rock.
the scenes of the day played through his mind, as he observed the red carpet that seemed like any house object he had seen. making him wonder what other pieces of magic could have been hidden in the now destroyed temple.
as the fire crackled softly, he reached out for the lamp. with a firm grip, he held the lamp close, feeling the warmth of its metal against his palm.
his eyes absorbed every detail of the it. the surface was intricately engraved with swirling patterns, serpents, temples, and cryptic symbols, all hinting at ancient secrets and the long-forgotten masters who once wielded its power.
jay wondered how many people before him had found themselves in the exact same situation, longing for something that only magic would let come to life.
he began to trace circles along one side, his fingers gliding over the engravings, smoothing the dust that had settled over centuries. each stroke filled him with a feeling of curiosity.
the intoxicating thrill of the unknown pulsed through him, igniting a reckless urge to awaken the genie trapped. and so he did.

A completely random, self-indulgent thought based on a snippet from our conversation about Damon's character... But I'm now really curious about how you'd rank the DN boys based on their attractiveness levels in canon. Personally, I always saw Damon as the most physically attractive, even if he's not my favourite, just because the context in DN points to Damon being very handsome. Though a personal headcanon is that I always saw his looks as close to a dark, fallen angel rather than classically rugged handsomeness.
I've never ranked them in order, but saw them as being attractive for different reasons. That's why the idea of ranking them took me by surprise! So, this isn't my official ranking, but more of what features I think of when I think of them.
I see Kai as the more classically handsome, with his clean hair cut and mixed features. He sticks out the most because of his Japanese features, which draws a lot of attention. We know his mom is gorgeous, and that he got some features from her, such as his lips and smile. He's swoon-worthy, for sure. Along with that, I imagine he has kind, warm expressions that are inviting.
-
But speaking of smiles, Will's got the best one, hands down for sure. His smile makes you smile and you don't even know why. I do picture him having dreamy green eyes, which probably goes a long way. He's attractive, but somewhere between boyish and handsome. In the first chapter of NF, Emory mentions his scruffiness. Because of this, I headcanon he looks much younger when he's clean shaven, leaning in those boyish features, and more of a rugged manly type of handsome when he's growing a beard. In the bonus scene, Kai mentioned him having a nice voice, which is an interesting thing to note, so that adds to his attractiveness.
-
Michael is the most average, with brown hair and hazel eyes. Still, there's something about him that is still captivating. Obviously being attractive, he meets the typical standards of facial symmetry, having good skin, and being naturally athletic which keeps him in good health. However, I think most of what makes Michael attractive is what's behind his eyes. It's unspoken, unexplainable, just something about him. People wouldn't be able to put their finger on why exactly they're drawn to him other than his features. That and he's the tallest at 6'4, which wins him points regardless of what his face looks like. His good looks are a bonus.
-
Like you, I see Damon as not being the typical rugged handsome type. There's something about him that's slightly off, and yet. . . What sticks out right now is that part of the bonus scene from Michael's section, where he comments that the longer Damon makes them wait, the more they want him. Sometimes I wonder if Damon really is that attractive or if people are building him up in their minds (keeping in mind that I see most of their peers as being above average in terms of attractiveness, just on the basis that they're all rich and can afford the best of the best. That goes a long way in being considered physically attractive). Regardless, Damon's undoubtedly, undeniably the most captivating to look at and watch. All the appeal of a dark, fallen angel, as you said. Whether he's the most "attractive", I think most are attracted to him for one reason or another, even if their personal preference is one of the other three.
A lot of it is influenced by personal preference. But like you said, Damon's probably the most attractive even though he's not your favorite. To me, I wondered how the other girls felt about them. You have girls like Arion, who clearly had a thing for Damon, but probably would have settled for one of the others if they'd given her a chance. But were their girls who were only interested in one of them and none of the others, even if they could admit they were good looking. There had to be, right?
Sorry I can't give you my official ranking. I agree that Damon is made out to be the most attractive, but I have no idea where the other three would land. All four are tied in my head.
Thanks for the question though! I'll be interested in hearing your answers if you feel like sharing!

Parting Ways
I've decided I'm going to stop supporting the thegoldfiles blog after how much time has passed since my last post on Mobox87 and Miles.
Before I do go over why I'm no longer going to morally support the blog in anything that they need a hand on.
I would want to start off in defense for them on these claims as a last thing to have from me. ⬇️
On May 20th Cagney went on a Hiatus after receiving backlash for talking about Piaojun in response to an anonymous user seemingly to badmouth them.
I wanna Clarify that Cagney does not think Piaojun is a bad person at all. They consider them a great artist with a focus on enjoying William x Renata pairing. Clearly shown in the translation of their first sentence.
What I can understand from where the angry mob started attacking them is when they started pointing out that they considered the drawings between William x Renata romanticizing their abuse when clearly it's shown to not be the case with Piaojun displaying her art.
Plus, when she does display abuse in her art it's barely projected much but it still remains true with the FNAF Affinity story. Either way, Piaojun has her own interpretation of pairing.
Besides that a statement that still remains true is that Piaojun supports Mobox87 which I can understand why that is looked down upon by them but again they're still young. I wouldn't put them accountable for it.
Anyways, I did reach out to Piaojun about this and they suggested to never bring them up on the blog.
In my opinion, I agree that you should keep questions like that out of the blog and usually that's what I do or I'll just tell people to shut up.
Now then!-
Let's talk about why I'm parting ways with the gang after being a formal ally that supported their causes by reblogging posts, giving opinions and statements, and offering evidence whenever I could do so.
Well as of recently I've been mostly talking about Arion the kid/Blue's Journey to bring awareness onto this blog as a way to support Red Radiant, including many other victims alike.
It's been a rather serious situation to go over and I've been trying to get this well known for anyone out there to share the truth and clear the names of victims who have been impersonated into being falsely accused of harassment.
So, you would think that hitting up Cagney to help out would work well under the circumstances that Red Radiant, Andikai, JR-Verse and many others are going through.
Wrong-
"I'm not really planning on getting into it"
"Though I've heard a little bit about it, and considering he impersonates people that call him out, neither of us mods would really want to take that risk"
"You've already done a good job with it from what I've seen though, but we don't really wanna get involved into the sort of stuff involving him"
Of course, they didn't wanna talk about Arion instead they wanted to reblog my other post because it's convenient enough for them to talk about Mobox87 and Miles.
Upsetting as this was to be confronted with the fact they didn't wanna help. I had to convince them by getting AndiKai and Red Radiant to talk with Cagney in a group chat on Discord. (Keeping Discord names and pfp censored for safety reasons)
We didn't get a reblog to get notice for it until May 19.
And a follow up on May 20th
After those posts were made. Nothing about Arion was mentioned or reblogged to discuss the controversy. Instead they went on a hiatus after being chewed out for talking about Piaojun.
Now of course, I already talked about thegoldfiles blog not wanting to talk about this "important topic" on my "A Scam and A Spiteful Client?" at the very bottom and upon doing so. It triggered Cagney to respond to me on discord in our private chat.
I chose not to respond at all because
I was busy dealing with the Arion drama and still am.
I don't wanna deal with Cagney nor apologize because it's the truth and I think that it should be acknowledged.
I think the decision has already been made final once I was kicked out of the private community.
I don't give a FUCK if you're mad
So
Don't expect me to get involved in your "shenanigans" at all! I stick my neck out for you when there are topics to discuss on thegoldfiles blog especially if you need support in tight situations but when I need the favor in return. You don't want to commit to it unless it's in your interest or you're just too much of a pussy to take it on.
Though I should've expected much from them considering that you had made a deal with Miles to never bring up stuff he's done on the blog and wanted me to delete my post when I called him out for harassing an artist on DeviantArt awhile back.
And the same thing happened when Cagney didn't want me to post about his grooming on "Miles ownership drama timeline, part 6".
To further confirm this is all true. It's been mentioned in this post of me responding to Cagney's anonymous submissions defending Miles ⬇️
https://www.tumblr.com/minerwarfare-suzuya/734730284201902080/miles-anonymous-defense?source=share
"But now let me back track for a moment about that deal that Miles claimed has been promised. Apparently Cagney was told to keep Miles off as a topic and not be mentioned on the Moboxcritique blog."
Yeah, y'know if I was Miles under that situation then I would totally be mad as well because I would've felt backstabbed. Though again you're making a deal with one of the mods for the critic blog against Mobox87 and her supporters.
The fuck did he expect was going to happen when he pays her constantly for OCs?
Honestly Miles should know better but he doesn't. Like seriously don't ever come back to say your sorry and start doing shit to someone behind people's backs.
Man, fuck it don't even interact with the critics or Kevonica at all. Considering that you'll be staying on Tumblr still.
Anyways, I'm just done. I've held back long enough and I'm already tired. If anyone should be mad it's me and anyone else expecting more integrity out of Cagney running the blog.
If you're expecting anything new out of the thegoldfiles blog.
It's either going to be criticism or discussing about
Mobox87's recent activity on posting new pages to her comics that continue in with the same themes that people are aware of.
Mobox87's latest YouTube video which was uploaded for a school assignment and made within a week.
Responding to submissions about previous Mobox87 work that's been reviewed or overlooked.
Being reminded of posted artwork that Mobox87 made back then because someone asked.
Something about Namygaga.
Responding to this post.
Basically what I'm saying is that there's nothing news worthy that will be posted unless it's lost media of Mobox87's work brought back up and saved in the archives since everything that's been shared against Mobox87 has been put into the archives, as well as expressed. Or any further updates on that unfinished FON game.
I think with clear indication is that the blog is running out of things to say or just doesn't wanna commit to talking about other serious topics.
So, It's whatever at this point and I'm not going to help out or support the thegoldfiles blog when needed.
I'll be doing my own thing as usual. Good luck to them I guess.
I'll see you all in the next post.

And the drabble for Arion yes!
Arion put his phone into his back pocket after reassuring himself that Halia was home and not out with friends. He took the steps two at a time and threw open Halia's front door, shouting "happy birthday, sis."
"Shhh," Halia hissed putting a finger to her lips.
Smile fading Arion glanced over at Javon who was sprawled out on the couch, eyes closed but his face was pinched as if he were in pain. "What happened?" he asked.
Shoving her brother towards the door he'd just come in through Halia said "not here."
"But," he tried to move around her but he was not match for her. He never was even though he was almost ten inches taller and several pounds heavier.
Closing the door firmly behind her Halia pointed towards the deck chairs. Silently Arion followed her.
"Well," he asked looking at her "are you going to tell me what that was all about?"
"He has an awful headache," she said.
"So you're not having a birthday party becaue his head hurts?" He frowned "I thought you both danced through the pain. Surely a little headache wouldn't prevent him from wanting you to have a party."
"Of course not but it's not just any old headache, it's concussion."
"Concussion? How did that happen?" he asked instantly alert. "Can I do anything to help?"
Smiling "don't worry Javon will be fine. No need to worry."
"But what happened?" he persisted.
"Well," Halia's cheeks flushed as she looked down, her fingers drawing circles on her lap. "He was doing a dance move we hadn't practiced much and he fell off the stage."
"And he fell on his head?" Arion said suspecting there was more to the story and by the way his sister was acting it was probably because Javon was trying to impress Halia. He felt a sting in his chest as he tried to convince himself that he wasn't jealous; after all it wasn't her fault that the man he liked was in love with his sister.

Hazel Levesque with Lover? (I barely see any hazel content 😭)
౨ৎ ⋆˚ LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, WILL YOU PLEASE STAND?
☆ LOVER: send a character and i'll give you a few romantic hcs!
— HAZEL!!!!!!!!!!!!!
— why does nobody pay attention to her like that's my girl right there!
— most powerful demigod who?
— anyways... back to the topic
— hazel levesque. oh my gosh. everyone knows she's the SWEETEST girl ever!!!
— but she doesn't get close enough with people for other's to realize how hilarious she is.
— except you, of course.
— you are subjected to hazel's torment teasing of campers behind their back...
— it's okay though she's allowed
— you can't count how many times hazel has ranted about octavian and his.. interesting.. personality.
— you've told her to save her energy for other things, but she's just so funny that you're on the floor crying with laughter.
— it's not that she's angry, she's just making fun of him.
— she doesn't really get angry angry. she gets irritated, but she reserves her anger for when people mess with her loved ones, including you.
— octavian made an offhanded remark about you being hazel's partner during a senate meeting, and she had to grip the table so she wouldn't lash out and rip him a new one. literally or figuratively, you choose.
— octavian can suck it! hazel is confident in her relationship with you, and knows nothing can break it. not even that stupid blond dummy!
— anyways
— hazel loves to treat you to presents. gift giving is her love language, along with quality time!
— after she got used to modern technology, you realized she loved to play video games.
— and i'm not talking animal crossing or stardew valley, though those are amazing games!
— what i'm trying to say is that hazel goes crazy on overwatch and valorant. like, crazy. she even dabbles in fortnite (but thinks it's a little silly)
— she likes to play matches with you, and is either your personal pocket healer, or your crazy damage dealer winning potg or mvp.
— hazel loves to buy you skins! she knows you like being cute in matches, and loves the look on your face when you open a gift box.
— gaming isn't your only shared activity, of course. hazel has been taking up dancing, and loves to practice with you! and of course, riding on arion (though it scares you to death).
— don't tell anyone, but you're hazel's muse. she has sketchbook after sketchbook of just your face, your smile, the way your hair brushes against your face in the wind.
— she's scared to show you, because she doesn't want you to think her drawings are creepy. being creepy just comes with being a daughter of pluto, though!
— at some point, hazel introduces you to nico. that meeting was incredibly awkward. you've heard so much about him, but the way he threatened you to treat hazel well (which of course you do and will) made you almost pee your pants.
— nico finally approves, and you end up going to the underworld for festivities and family events. you are still scared every time.
— but hazel wouldn't make you do anything you didn't want to do, and she's amazing at calming you down if you get overwhelmed or stressed. she knows exactly the words to say.
— anyways, hazel supremacy!

Drabble 1 || Drabble 2 | ???
♥━━━━━━━━━━━♡━━━━━━━━━━━━♥
You're torn.
While he's clearly the same kind that's currently on the hunt for you to bring you back to your destroyed home planet, he also clearly needs help to survive. He's barely breathing, chest hardly moving as he struggles visibly to hang onto life. His clothes are soaked, his skin is pale, lips turning blue and eyes closed shut.
You don't know how he got in this situation- but somehow, he reminds you of yourself a little. You're clumsy after all- constantly hurting yourself on accident, legs almost always littered in bruises from accidentally hitting tables and other furniture.
Though nowadays, it's more or less from your little illegal adventure to this planet.
Earth is basically dying; with no recourses left and the remaining one's heavily limited and restricted, humans riot more than they live their lifes, and some, like you, try to escape elsewhere in hopes of a different and better future. You've snuck yourself onto a cargo spaceship, and made it to Arion- and while your life is hectic and you don't have a home, it's definitely a lot calmer than back on earth, were people constantly riot and fight over the littlest of things.
You slip a little as you make yourself down the slippery sides of the creek, scratching your thigh harshly, provably drawing blood. But by now, your mind has been made up- you're gonna get him out, call for help- and as soon as you made sure he'd been noticed, you'd just run as fast as you could.
Yeah, that's a good plan.
His eyes barely open as you approach him, head turning to the side to glance at you- but he doesn't say anything, doesn't move otherwise, as if he knows there's no use in it anyways. You're chewing on the inside of your cheek as you think about how to get him out of the cold water- freezing river already biting harshly at your own legs, pants soaking with it instantly- you can't imagine how horrible it must be for him. "sorry.." you apologize in advance, before tugging on his arm, slowly pulling him out of the riverbed and onto the side. He groans in pain for a second, and you apologize under your breath again.
Though you're not sure if he understands.
While the race living on this planet seems to be very aware of human language, it's not the same for everyone. Politicians from this planet speak the human language just fine, and you've read somewhere in a news headline that they apparently are able to speak in a way that makes it understandable to anybody and that language is something they don't really have nor understand, but you're not sure if you understand that correctly.
It's a lot to unpack, and you don't really think of yourself as smart anyways. It's not like you need to either- you don't talk to any of them.
Your plan now would be to call for help and run- but the problem right now, is that pulling him out took away a lot more strength from you than you thought it would. Your legs feel heavy, and the tiredness in your bones makes it almost impossible to get up again. Especially now that it starts raining. Heavily.
You sigh, accepting your fate at this point, before you yell out for help.
You've pulled him out of the riverbed- you won't let your efforts go to waste now, even if he is the same kind that will probably kill you as soon as they find you for illegally living on this planet for months now. But it's fine- you've at least did something good, filled up your karma a bit, so you'll maybe get to heaven if there is one.
"...why?" he croaks out as you interrupt your shouting, looking down at him. His brows are furrowed, sharp pupils focused on you as you shrug, before lights suddenly shine down on you.
"good comes to those who do good." you shrug. "or so my granny said." you mumble more or less to yourself, as the trees bend and sway under the heavy force of the winds the spacecraft produces as it hovers above you both.
"step away from the body.!" the loudspeakers announce harshly, and you chuckle, before slowly getting up on your knees before you stumble backwards. "further!" it barks out from the speakers, and you trip yet again- though it seems like it's enough. "do not move. Any movement will be taken as an act of aggression, and dealt with accordingly." the announcer says, and you just laugh to yourself as you stay on your back while two people are led down with a stretcher, landing close to the man you've pulled out the creek.
They work on him for a bit, before he says something that makes the fully armed first responders, turn their helmets towards you;
But you're unable to know what happens next, as fatigue makes you black out under the heavy rain and deafening aircraft above.

soup (Caged, Whumptober Day 4)
Whumptober comes a lil bit early today. Here it is: the aforementioned, infamous ‘soup drabble’. Be aware of a lack of editing, haha. I’m very impatient and I wanna air the other piece I wrote last night that goes with this. Enjoy some really, really angsty comfort.
CW: tiny!whumpee, tiny!caretaker kind of, mention of self-harm as a coping mechanism/out of boredom/to distract from pain, food, (nonsexual) forced nudity, torture (...Arion is forced to straddle a bar for. Awhile. Nonsexual. Just really really painful.) Implied withholding of food and starvation, neglect, caged, mention of systematic hunting of tinies for their wings.
They had to put tape over his hands, this time, to keep him from scratching himself, from making his own wrists bleed. It was the only thing Arion could do to distract himself from the pain, the only thing to keep him from going insane all alone, with nothing to see, nothing to hear, nothing to talk to in the cage. And now Arion can’t have even that. They’d kicked him once they saw the blood, and Andras pinned him down with his boot, while they wrapped his hands together with a square of big, dull, silver tape from Heston’s drawer.
And now he’s alone again. The others are gone. A part of him is horribly grateful that they’re out, hunting for new victims, for new arivies Heston can mutilate and sell. Part of him hopes they don’t find anyone. Part of him hopes that they do, and that one survives the saw, and that they will become Heston’s favorite toy. Arion hates that part of himself. But it’s the only morsel of hope that he can hold onto… so he does.
They hadn’t always made him stay in the cage like this. They used to just tie him, for the first few weeks after he was taken from the tree, over a year ago.
The cage was a red, decorative candleholder, originally, so right in the center was a raised circle and a sharp protruding spike to mount a candle. It was too short, too thin to tie him to without an easy escape, so right from the beginning Heston had welded a small angled, L-shaped rod over the top of the spike in the shape of a T to keep the twine from slipping off when lifted.
And then-young and naïve little Arion saw something that looked like an opportunity, and he took it. Untying the rope hadn’t been that hard. He ran. Or, tried to. He didn’t make it far. Not even out of the garage. They’d dragged him right back to the cage, slammed him against the sharp metal bars, and tied him again. Differently, that time.
“I think we need to teach little birdie here a lesson, though. I’ve got a funny idea.”
That was over a year ago.
Now, even still, long after he’s been broken and long after he stopped trying to fight it, stopped trying to run, stopped clawing through the ropes, it’s the same rule, the same funny idea. He straddles the crooked angle bar, with his feet barely unable to touch the ground. Unless tied there, and they do. They do tie his feet, to a weight. His heels shouldn’t be able to touch the ground but they do and it hurts but there’s nothing he can do, nothing he can do but wait for mercy. Every night, every morning, whenever they’re gone, he waits to be let go.
There’s no more tying for his hands, now, though-- this day being the only exception, with the tape. They don’t even lock the door. They know he won’t run. Couldn’t, even if he wanted to. He can barely move after so many hours of sitting there, can’t even stir his legs, let alone try to climb off. Someone always has to lift him. And often, they forget to. Or… they don’t care.
They only left a little while ago, but Arion’s been here since dawn. It will be a painful wait, today.
After so long, after sitting over a sharp metal angle for hours, everything becomes numb and unfeeling. The hurt dulls to a low unrelenting hum. Still, it hurts, and he can’t take his mind off it, can’t think about anything else. Arion draws a long, shallow breath, and he tries to wipe away the mess of tears over his face with a shoulder.
Small footsteps come from the other side of the desk, out of his line of sight until they round the corner. Arion tenses. His stomach flips. He thought… he thought they all left.
Someone steps up to the cage door, pushes it open.
It’s Ven.
Arion notices he hesitates before stepping in. He sees the discomfort flick across his gaze, the same way it does with Andras and Kai. They all hate the cage, except Damon, and he’s never figured out why. And next to the discomfort, Arion thinks, maybe, he sees a little trace of sympathy in Ven’s eyes. But it could have easily been a trick of the light.
Ven sets something down that Arion can’t see, and then he moves closer.
Arion flinches. His breath picks up, his heart starts racing, mind goes blurry. His head shakes wildly, pleadingly. “D-don-don’t, don’t, please, please, I’m, please, please don’t, don’t-I-I, I’m, ‘m, ‘m so, tired,” he begs, voice breaking, panic sinking into his gut like sharp poison. He keens, eying Ven with wild fear, frantic dread. He can barely talk, barely form words over tears and uneven breath and his raw, scratchy throat. “Please, don’t h-h-ur-ur, hur, hurt me, please, please don’t, d, nh, hn, pl-“
“It’s alright,” Ven murmurs. It’s sudden.
Arion’s breath hitches and he quiets, and for a moment, he stops breathing.
He nears Arion, sinks to his knees without a word, and unties the weight from Arion’s bleeding ankles. “I won’t hurt you,” he says. He stands, briefly looks Arion in the eye. “I’m gonna help you off of this now, alright?”
Arion swallows hard, pushes away the whiplash of emotion and braces himself for the moment when the weight shifts and all the feeling comes flooding back, when all the pain that was building up crashes into him anew.
Arms snake over his torso. But they’re gentle.
“On three. One, two-“
A harsh metallic taste meets Arion’s tongue when he bites it, when his breath hitches after Ven lifts him up and over the bar. He’s set carefully on the floor, on his side, which he’s grateful for. Heaving, heavy breaths take his mind off the horribly searing pain, but don’t ease it. Eyes screwed tightly shut, Arion presses his face into the cold metal floor of the cage. He fights the sniffling and his wobbling lips, wills himself to keep it together.
A soft voice comes from over his head. “Better?”
Arion gives a small nod. A small squeak of a timid thank you catches in his throat. He hears Ven shift to stand and then he’s walking back toward the door, but only to pick up what he’d set down when he came in. It’s a little bowl, Arion realizes. A little wooden bowl. A bit of steam wafts from the top and Arion’s mouth waters. Of course, it’s not for him, he knows. Couldn’t be.
That’s what each of the others were given before they left. Arion hasn’t earned one. Hasn’t been hurt this morning yet, so he can’t be fed. Those are- those are the rules.
That’s what he thinks even as Ven comes back to him with the soup in hand, even as he sits down next to Arion and holds it up to him. “Here, um. I want you to have this,” he says.
Arion’s eyes gloss over in unbelief and hesitant gratitude. He glances up at Ven, checks his expression, checks for any hint of malice or trickery, and he finds none.
“You need it more than I do,” he murmurs. “But, um. I can’t. I can’t take the tape from your hands. I’m- I would. But they’d, they’d be worse to you, if I did.” Ven pauses. Arion can see he’s genuinely apologetic. He’s seen flickers of that in Ven before. But it’s never been like this. “I can… I can help you, though, if you’re okay with that? I don’t. I’m not going to make you eat out of the bowl like, like an animal.”
Arion stares at him, bewildered. There’s a question, there. A choice.
Arion’s starving. He nods.
With that, Ven sets the bow aside. He helps Arion sit up, lets him lean on him to stay upright. Ven brings one of his black wings around him, partly to keep Arion from falling, and partly in respect, to cover him.
Then he brings the bowl into his hands, whispers one more thing to him. “Don’t feel like you have to drink it all at once. Nice and slow, okay? It’ll be easier to keep down that way.” As an afterthought, he adds, “It’s not going anywhere, I promise.” Arion nods without taking his teary eyes off the food. Ven tips the bowl to his lips, then, without any demand, without force, and just lets him drink. Lets him lean against his shoulder, and take the only food he’s been allowed to have in nearly a week.

1985 was a flat year in the animation world. Let’s ask the hit makers who hit the home runs on how to put an end to this situation.
HAYAO MIYAZAKI (writer and director of “Laputa: Castle in the Sky”)
(Blurb)
What are the animated works that the young ones, the ten year olds to fifteen year olds want to watch? Doors will surely open if you keep them in mind.
It’s unthinkable that new hope can come out of TV when one episode from a TV series needs 3500 cells to be drawn. On the other hand, in movie theaters as well, there are no films that will mobilize moviegoers other than anime fans. I think that filmmakers have forgotten the basics of selling movies. Collaboration films intended for overseas markets are all the rage, and even though I want the fans who are in Japan to see these films, they can’t and all I’m left with is frustration. Only deterioration can come out of this situation. Actually, there isn’t even one anime today that is aimed at older kids in elementary school to kids in middle-school - the very kids who should be watching anime. (The anime available now) is aimed at younger kids at elementary school and then jumps straight into anime for college kid anime maniacs. It’s a tough time for fifteen year olds who are put aside by society. Twelve year olds to fifteen year olds are the kids who need the most comfort and yet the situation now is that they get their comfort from handheld video games. Those who produce animation are losing sight of their targeted audience. The remaining anime fans are making anime that they want to watch, and this is a symptom (of the present situation) that is beyond redemption. This is why video animation is still backward in terms of its production, and only its format is new.
If one has an earnest approach, children will definitely react. This is a real example - in a run-down middle school, in his morning greeting, a new principal said, “I don’t determine a person’s value by his or her grades or appearance”. Miraculously, all misbehavior was gone from that day’s afternoon onwards. What children want has always had just one theme - an adventure that saves the mind and heart.

The hero “Pazu” and heroine “Sheeta” from “Laputa: Castle in the Sky”. Mr. Miyasaki comments that “For a young lad, living at all times in itself is an adventure. The reason why Japanese adventure novels are boring is that the hero (in these novels) makes a living out of going on an adventure.”
SUGII GISABURO (executive director of “Touch”)
(Blurb)
What people want nowadays can’t be found in data. What is the secret of the hits “Night on the Galactic Railroad” and “Touch”?
Honestly speaking, if anything, I genuinely make animation to match my desires, not thinking that today’s animation is trending towards this way, or future animation should be this way. In other words, I think a great deal about my daily life, figuring out what is lacking and coming up with desires felt by everyone else. I just happen to be a person who creates, so I vent out those accumulated desires and discontent and let them combust in my work.
My works are quite heavy in terms of cycle and tempo, whether it be “Night on the Galactic Railroad” or “Touch”. I sometimes think if this kind of heaviness is ok or not. But that is because I have a desire for this heaviness, and also because I have this easy pleasure within me. Instead of work that is borne out of being hung up just on data, I think work that is borne out of my inner natural desires is more acceptable to people. In the meantime, “Touch” will be shown as an hour and a half movie in the spring so please look forward it.
ISAO TAKAHATA (producer of “Laputa”)
(Blurb)
Movies that make the mind and body come alive are what’s important. As for me, I am trying my hand at my first live action film. I am shooting a documentary.
I think nowadays, the thing that a lot of people working in anime has forgotten is the excitement they felt watching adventure movies when they were kids, the kind of excitement that even your body moved spontaneously. In that sense, I think that works such as Hayao Miyazaki’s films should be brought out to the rest of the world and after (producing his) “Nausicaa”, I am still producing. When kids’ minds are liberated, there’s no reason to think that they won’t spontaneously move. In this day and age dominated by computer games, a lot of kids’ play involve just using the brain and nerves so I’d like them to experience things that energizes the blood and makes the body dance. The difficulty is, I think it’s a difficult time now to have a situation in place wherein you let them experience adventure. If you can’t make people believe in the world portrayed onscreen, you can’t pull viewers into the adventure onscreen.
It’s not that I’m not doing my real job as a producer. I am now producing a live action documentary movie set in Yanagawa in Kyushu. It is about how our Japanese ancestors developed towns which utilized waterways. There is also a part in the movie that has graphic illustrations using anime. It’s less than 2 hours and is slated to be shown after the summer.
MAMORU OSHII (scriptwriter and director of “Angel’s Egg”)
(Blurb)
This is a warning!! Please reduce the number of collaboration animes before Japanese animation is annihilated.
If I’m going to be severe about it, I’d say that I want all collaboration animes gone.
Those who work in big studios and places with systems in place may not feel a sense of crisis yet. But in the case of freelance animators like us who work together and put together a workplace and disperse once our anime is done, a part of our actual work is outsourced. Recently however, the small video studios and finishing studios that we outsource to are loaded with collaboration work. Japanese animes can’t compete with collaboration animes in terms of profit so when that happens, we just have to rely on the goodwill of the studio bosses, or make them feel the same way we do with regards to the contents of our work, or by chance see an opening and aim for that, or appease them or plead with them. We can’t work in just that kind of a situation. That’s why it’s almost impossible to make highly compact and solid animes in Japan now. Even without going that far, it’s almost impossible to make even decent animes in the country today. In fact, anime TV series are almost all in shambles, and I can’t even be optimistic about the video quality of the anime we have now. In this kind of situation, I can’t help but seriously think if next year, our ideas can be made into anime.

A girl from Mamoru Oshii’s original video anime “Angel’s Egg” (drawn by Seikou Nakura). Mr. Oshii revealed that he is having a hard time because there aren’t enough animators to make even just one anime video.
YOSHIKAZU YASUHIKO (director and screen director of “Arion”)
(Blurb)
I haven’t decided yet on what I will make after “Arion”. I will not take part in the new Gundam series.
I am very busy now with screen work for the anime “Arion” which will be shown in theaters on March 8th. But as far as I’m concerned, I’m conscious of the fact that this is my anime for 1985. Therefore, I haven’t decided yet on what my anime will be for 1986. I feel like I want to take a break for a year.
“Arion” is quite restrained for an anime to be shown in movie theaters. I’m happy that this movie is being touted as “the” main animation movie this spring but conversely, it’s a shame that there aren’t a lot of big anime movies for theaters. It’s already been decided that “Arion” is going to be shown in top-class movie theaters throughout Japan. It just shows how much anime has received recognition. I’d like to wait for animes that will pick up on this trend.
With regards to anime TV series, I was in charge of character design for “Z Gundam” this past year but I’ve decided not to be involved at all in the sequel’s new series. I think it’s better to relegate “Gundam” to the younger animators, starting with Hiroyuki Kitazume, who have grown so much in their craft. Now I sincerely think, if only someone as good as Kitazume were around eight years ago to help with “Gundam”, I would’ve been saved…
(Caption for illustration at the bottom of the page)
The heroine “Lesfina” from “Arion”, which was produced, character designed and screen directed by Yoshikazu Yasuhiko. This is the drawing touched-up by Mr. Yasuhiko. As we have discussed in a series of character designers in last month’s issue, he breathes life into his anime characters, showing genius capabilities.
(Box at the lower left side of the page)
If there were animes like this I’d watch it!
MASAMI YUUKI (manga artist)
As a rule, the three things I’d like to see are: “something that isn’t originally from manga”; “robot animation that isn’t dark”; and “in one year, a collaborative anime by Osamu Dezaki and Akio Sugino for release in Japan”. I can watch TV anime while casually lying around but I’d like anime that I wouldn’t be able to take my eyes off of the screen, something that is both easy to watch and amusing. And as written in other magazines before, I’d like to see Mr. Hayao Miyazaki’s version of “Atragon”! (Translator’s note: “Undersea Warship” in Japan)
YUUKI KUDOU (actress and singer)
I’d definitely watch anime that’s fun to watch, anime that will make me happy. At any rate, I’d like a hero on the side of justice who will beat the hell out of the bad guys and put them in a bind.
RYOKO YAMAGISHI (manga artist)
If there were an anime like Disney’s “Fantasia”, I’d watch it!

(Article Title)
Major producers from each of the anime/production companies talk about their hits for 1986 and foresee what their companies will be producing
KENJI YOKOYAMA (Toei Animation Co.)
(Blurb)
The new hit TV show Gegege no Kitaro from the fall of 1985 which received top ratings reflects modern times.
This is what I’ve been thinking with the third conversion of Gegege no Kitaro into animation. One is the change in children’s thinking with regards to ghosts/monsters. Of course “Ghostbusters” and “E.T.” have influenced this change, and now kids consider ghosts almost as pets. So in this way I think that if you match the present mood and go in the direction of lighter anime, you’ll be able to create different things from before. Children’s lives are too managed now, so they’d want an outlet to vent too. And in a society that has too many things and where, if you have the money, you can buy anything, things like the Toyoda Company fraud scandal and shady investment journals can also be construed as monstrosities. This anime has this overall theme: In the ideal world of Kitaro, monsters, people, animals, grass and trees should all co-exist so I thought I’d have various new approaches within the anime.
As a new endeavor, our company is going into video anime. It’s called “Amon Saga” and we’re not just going to sell it in video format, (I’m also hoping) we can show it in any movie theater even for just one week otherwise it’ll just be too sad. Especially with regards to original works with names that aren’t well known, I think it’s dangerous to rely on just one production studio. After “Konpora Kid” ends, beginning February, we’re planning on animating “Kinka”, a serialized manga in the weekly magazine Shonen Jump.
(Caption for illustration on the left side of the page)
A figure from the very popular “Kitaro”. They can’t keep up with the demand for a ghost eraser that they’ve produced and now it is a hit product. It’s also been decided that there will be new movie releases for this anime in the New Year and in the spring.
EIJI YAMAURA (Nihon Sunrise Co.)
(Blurb)
Find common ground with your viewers and defeat this lethargic mood!
Sunrise has now expanded into six studios and at any given point in time, we plan to work simultaneously on two to three anime TV series, video anime, anime for movie theaters and collaboration anime. Overall, anime today is manga magazine-driven, so our question is how far can we go in staying on an original anime track. Robot animes have vastly decreased in number, so conversely, I think this is a chance for us to come out with epoch-making anime. I’d like to make anime that will allow us to seriously converse with our child viewers.
TOSHIMITSU SUZUKI (Artmic Co.)
(Blurb)
Making anime that will be understood by the whole world! The robot anime boom is shifting from transformation-type robots to robots that merge into one.
Speaking of Japanese products in the international market today, mechanical products come to mind. This is also true in the animation world since Japanese robot animes are extremely in vogue. Especially in the American market, they already have transformation-type robot animes, so animes that have robots that merge into one are new to them. We’ve already exported “Beast King GoLion”, following that, (we’re going to export) “Dancouga Super Beast Machine God”.
We at Artmic plan to make animation that can be exported to foreign markets and we also are also keeping in mind to configure these anime with universal values. The video anime “Gall Force” is the first step in that direction.
NOBUO INADA (Tokyo Movie Shinsha Co.)
(Blurb)
Our track remains the same - making collaboration animes for foreign countries but we also have new anime.
I can’t necessarily say that the present state of anime is good. But the passion for anime during the anime boom of “Gundam” and the like was an anomaly so I feel that the state of anime now is the real one.
As you may know, not only do we make anime for Japan but we also produce anime for foreign countries. It’s a difficult situation for us now to concentrate on anime just for Japan because of production costs. It can be said that Japanese anime should be improved from the very basic level.
In 1986, we plan to have “Little Nemo” and in the fall, an anime for movie theater release by the duo Desaki and Sugino. At any rate, we’re doing our best.
JUNZOU NAKAJIMA (Nihon Animation Co.)
(Blurb)
We’re aiming for improving the quality of our masterpieces and we’re also trying our hand at new anime!
As you may know, our company has mainly been making masterpiece animes for more than fifteen years but I think we’ve made a habit of making similar anime. But we’ve been able to improve on our animes’ degree of perfection precisely because of the buildup of our experience in animation. We’re also working hard on our technology, and on the authenticity of our masterpieces. At any rate, we’re trying to make anime that is still interesting to watch even after five or six years have passed. Next year, we plan on making “Pollyanna” after “A Little Princess Sara” ends, and a new SF series called “Space Sagittarius”. We’re also going to have one TV special around May.
HIROMICHI MOGAKI (Tsuchida Production Co.)
(Blurb)
Just like what we did in “Tsubasa” and “Kimengumi”, we’re adding our original flavor to animation adapted from manga!
Even with regards to animating manga, the time when you aren’t creative when adapting something is over - just like our approach to our anime “High School! Kimen”. In manga, the fun is enclosed in a comic cell. Differing from that, we were able to bring out fun that moves freely (in the anime format). (Our decision to) put two episodes in one anime has also been well-received. We are also planning to have an anime TV series next year but all will depend on how long “Captain Tsubasa” will last. Captain Tsubasa’s storyline is that the finals will end in March, and the European leg will begin. This will catch up with the manga version’s storyline so I’m thinking of making a new one or taking a temporary break.
MASAYASU SAGISU (Eiken Co., Ltd.)
(Blurb)
Please watch the cooking scenes in the manga “Oishinbo” animated in a live-action format.
The anime “Sazae-san” is going to be seventeen years old. I think that the things that last for a long time are not manga for boys or manga for girls but manga for adults such as “Sazae-san” that has a family theme. But there aren’t many of this kind of anime today.
There has been a lot of SF space anime but nowadays it’s quite possible for kids to go to space someday. But the world of “Sazae-san” where the grandma, the grandpa, the old maid and the troubles they encounter while living together is farther than space in today’s world of nuclear families. Conversely, this makes Sazae-san’s storyline fresh.
For next year’s anime, we are developing our plans to animate Mr. Shinji Wada’s manga “Pigmalio”. We’d also like to do SF action animes, and a totally new genre - animating Big Comic Spirit’s serialized manga “Oishinbo”. Following a ten-year cycle, monster animes might come out next year but we’d like to try out new genres.

We are developing original videos for the anime “Dancouga”
Our company has concentrated mainly on original anime and we are continuing with this direction in 1986 and beyond. Even though our animes are popular, I don’t know why we are edited a lot. Even “Dancouga” which originally had fifty-two episodes was reduced to thirty-eight and the final story was changed. We are going to sell a one and a half hour video in March and we’d like to include the real final story in it. Seventy percent of animators in Japan today are working on collaboration anime. The pay (for collaboration anime) is more than double, so we have to do something about it.
TOSHIHIRO NAGAO (Kaname Production Co.)
I’d like to see different kinds of SF anime. “Windaria (Once Upon a Time)” is the first step in that direction.
Generally speaking, I’d like to go with polar opposites - simplistic anime that has funny gags and anime that explores heavy themes. I think our company would like to take a short break after “Windaria” ends and then we’re going to do a lighter anime. We’ve also talked little by little about producing an anime TV series, but can we really do it with the present situation? Companies we outsource to are doing a lot of collaboration anime and we don’t have the confidence that we will win the price war and if we dabble in (anime TV series) incorrectly, it will be a death blow. With this situation, it seems like we will be concentrating on video anime for now. With regards to the direction of our anime, we’d like to consider doing SF anime with our own touch and foray into different parts, for example, making modern anime like “Radio City Fantasy (Machikado no Marchen)” that merges footage and music.

“Magical Emi, the Magic Star” will end in February. We’re working on the anime that will follow this.
Ever since our “Dallos” anime, anime in the video anime genre have increased, and it’s becoming more and more difficult to foresee what’s ahead. But I feel our viewer base will return to children after the continuous increase in anime fans.
In our animes’ genres, it seems that we foray into unprincipled things but through trial and error, we are at that stage where we are aiming for our own style. In 1986, we plan to stop producing transformation-style anime after “Emi” and we are now working on an anime with a witch theme, with a nod to our very first anime. We have also decided that we will make a sequel to “Rumic World”.

If there were animes like this I’d watch it!
MIKI TORI (manga artist)
And yet there are only a few animes wherein you can feel each anime’s distinct character. I understand that anime is a group effort, but like manga, the director’s tastes dominate. If the time comes when the writer can say “that is good but this is also good”, I think that anime will become more vibrant.
AKIO YOSHIDA (manga artist)
If I’m going to watch, I might change the channel if they’d revive anime like the long adventure animes of Toei. It would feel just like watching the movie “Mothra”.
YUKI SAITO (actress and singer)
I was in a manga research group when I was in high school so all I watched were anime from Sunrise. I like “Gundam” and “Ideon”. If there were anime in that vein, I think I’d be obsessed again.

A Glance at the Anime World: The Hit men and their Predictions
SHOJI KAWAMORI
(Blurb)
It’s important to have interesting anime that will be universally accepted!
I haven’t really watched TV anime these past two years. Once you get rid of a habit, it’s not good. Once you distance yourself from anime, you won’t even be able tell which anime is good and which is bad. It’s scary to think that I’ve been watching anime by force of habit.
I also haven’t watched that many video animes to be fussy about it but I feel that video animes have become closer in form to manga. I can’t say though that it’s already at the serialized manga level, but it’s just a matter of time. But if you’re going to make video anime and you don’t make it differently from TV anime, it will be a waste. Probably change the design a bit…just like what Mr. Oshii is doing. Once your attempts go beyond the realm of attempting things and once you’ve achieved something basic, I think we’d probably be able to see the direction of video anime for the first time. If I were to create video anime, I’d like to make a short sixty minute one, something that is highly concentrated and can’t be fully “digested” in a TV anime format. Sixty minutes is too short for a movie and too long for TV, and I think it is a length that is untapped and put aside.
Compared to video, TV’s strong point is that you can make serialized anime on TV. Nicely put, TV is a medium wherein if you don’t have “ordinariness” (badly put, “mass appeal”) you won’t succeed so in this sense TV is a more demanding form of media than video. I also don’t like the trend wherein anime that don’t appeal to the masses are turned into video anime. I think that video anime should also have universal appeal.
For 1986, if there are proposals that come my way, I’ll do them. I still don’t know exactly what I’m going to do.
TOMOKO KONPARU
(Blurb)
With regards to video anime, I have “The Super Girl” and I’d like to try my hand at a new kind of animal anime.
Anime is said to be on a low note right now but I think that the number of anime being produced now is just right because there was a time when the anime that was being produced went over the production capabilities of those in the anime world. I even think that the number should be reduced by just a little bit more, but only if the quality is improved. It seems that 30 animes will be released in 1986, but I think that in terms of quality, (those that aren’t good) will be culled.
I don’t have any children yet but as a housewife I don’t think that anime has a bad influence on children. Since I was little, I myself grew up watching anime. Even now, from the standpoint of someone making anime, I don’t want to forget about the children. But on the other hand, I also think that mothers who just park their kids in front of the TV to watch anime isn’t good either.
The anime following “Hai Step Jun” will be “Maple Town”, an animal anime but I don’t want it to be anime with just “good” characters in it. I want to try making anime for young girls, which will be a new thing for me.
ICHIRO ITANO
(Blurb)
There must be anime that only young animators can do!
I think that mass media has a very strong influence on children. I want people to be more conscious of that. I feel that anime that is being made today just to make money is overly increasing - animators don’t question things, or assert themselves. An extreme example is the Lolita complex boom of late. If a person is being shown something like (a Lolita anime) from way back (from childhood), that person’s imagination takes precedence instead of the ability to adapt to another human being, and stress builds up as a result. I think we should oppose this current reality, and as for myself, I plan to try different things. I wonder what I’d be able to do before I turn thirty-five, and I also think that you can learn from failure.
MITSURU KANEKO (MK Productions)
(Blurb)
The computer is absolutely infiltrating the anime world.
It’s possible to think that in the future, the possibilities of computer graphics will first be used in the industrial fields. For example, the depth maps of the Japan Coast Guard just have numbers on them now but if you input these numbers into a computer, you’ll be able to see valleys (under the sea) that continue for miles as video images. And if this (technology) presses forward, for example, there is an (American) masterpiece special effects movie called “Fantastic Voyage” wherein they (physically) made the sets and then shot the film but in the future, you can make the movie set by inputting data in a computer.
Speaking of another side (of this technology), take the example of video images shown on large screens that have been demonstrated at an expo. Just like what was shown in the expo, video images and 3D images shown on dome-like screens can only be made using a computer.
In this way, the spotlight is now aimed at anime as a means to (showcase technology). Animation’s possibilities will also become limitless as it will need to respond to the diversification of people’s demands.

This is Cindy, a young girl from a biker gang in the anime “Megazone 23 Part 2”. Mr. Yasuomi Umetsu’s character design is original, as personified in this drawing. This anime has a different kind of appeal compared to Part 1.
KEISUKE FUJIKAWA (scriptwriter of the anime “Once Upon a Time” or “Legend of Fabulous Battle Windaria”)
I researched and compared the recent trends, the trend in fans’ consciousness about anime and anime programs and from around last year, it seems like the age of wanting “salvation” has come. I think that in so many ways, we are being stifled and we are seeking breakthroughs. I think that how anime as a medium is going to lift this issue up is going to be important. Even “Once Upon a Time”, which we will show in 1986, takes up issues of the present times. I’m putting emphasis on what I will say to the youth of today through SF that has stories of people in it instead of just hardcore SF. For this year and the next, I’d like to dig into aspects of the youth in different ways. I’d like to make anime that makes viewers think that there is something out there that matches their present selves perfectly.

This is Anasu, the heroine of “Windaria”. Illustrated by Ms. Mutsumi Inomata, this character personifies the pure themes of Mr. Fujikawa’s anime.
YOSHINOBU NISHIZAKI (producer)
(Blurb)
I’d like to make a video anime that will be a preview of a movie theater anime
With regards to “Odin: Photon Sailor Starlight”, I didn’t make excuses and I haven’t commented on it but there are clear reasons why that movie ended in failure. That anime was originally a one-hour program, twelve episode TV anime - in other words, it was an anime made to be aired for twelve hours. I think there was a big mistake in the producers’ thinking that they could digest this into a two and a half hour movie.
I used to say that after 1955, there wouldn’t be a hit anime made for movie theaters. The same thing is about to happen in the video anime world. If the overproduction of low-quality anime continues, there will definitely be a backlash. It seems that the most basic idea during planning anime has been forgotten. And this basic idea is this: things expressed through anime must rouse people’s imaginations.
We’re planning on releasing an anime for movie theaters on July 9, 1986 based on “Desler”*. But before that we’re planning on selling a promotion video about the movie in April. In making this video, budgetary issues, which have always been a concern in video animes, have been set aside so I’m planning on making it in the same high-quality as the movie. I’m also thinking of releasing a trailer of the movie at the same time.
*Translator’s note: Desler is a character in the anime “Space Battleship Yamato”.

If there were animes like this I’d watch them!
FUJIHIKO HOSONO (manga artist)
I like the works of Mr. Hayao Miyazaki. I heard that he said that he wanted to make an anime about the Period of Warring States (in Japanese history) so if that anime is made, I’d definitely want to watch it. Personally, I’d also like Mr. Miyazaki to make ninja anime. With regards to other animators, I like Mr. Mamoru Oshii, the one who made “Beautiful Dreamer.
SHOJOTAI (a singer/actress trio)
Reiko: Among animated characters, I like Peter Rabbit. I’d like Peter to guide me into a dreamy nature scene.
Miho: I really like Phillips. I’d like to plunge into a world adventure with a kitty cat.
Tomo: More than anything, I like Snoopy. I’d watch any number of animes with Snoopy in it. I’d like to watch happy animes.

Horse Trading
(link to ao3 on title, or continue reading after the read more)
“Octavian was an asshole,” Reyna said, a contemplative look on her face as she laid on the floor of Hazel’s Praetor Villa, “but sometimes I think, can you really blame him?”
“Yes,” Hazel said, from her position on the floor next to her, where she was trying to sketch Reyna, a task made inordinately difficult by the older girl’s constant moving around. “I really can.”
Reyna sighed. It was a long and contemplative sigh. It wasn’t unusual to see Reyna with a brooding, thinking look on her face, but the relaxed and content expression added a new dimension to it. It was something structural; it somehow made her look younger yet more self-assured at the same time. “Octavian,” Reyna repeated, “was an asshole. But this Villa, Hazel. This Villa. I can see why Octavian was so desperate for praetorship. This house almost makes up for the stress of leading a child army.”
“It does not,” Hazel said. “It really does not, Reyna. Distance has just made your heart grow fonder. And delusional.” She sighed as Reyna shifted her position yet again. Reyna winced as a wordless apology. “Also,” Hazel said, reaching for her eraser, “Octavian didn’t want the praetorship for the house. He wanted it because he was a power hungry and blood thirsty politician.”
“At least you agree the bed is worth it?”
The bed was very nice, Hazel had to admit. Californian King, which seemed excessive, but was appreciated, and the fluffiest pillows Hazel had ever laid her head on. “Maybe. But I’m not agreeing with you when you literally opted for laying on the floor instead of the bed.”
“Fair enough,” Reyna said. She stretched on the floor, some complicated starburst. Hazel decided to give up her endeavour at drawing Reyna and flipped to the previous page in her sketchbook where she had been working on a drawing of Arion. It was half completed, and it was an attempt at drawing purely from memory, but Hazel enjoyed the challenge. “But it’s good for your back, believe me.”
“You’re an immortal Huntress now. Does that really matter?”
“Also fair enough,” Reyna agreed. Reyna rolled over to prop herself up on her elbows and peeked at Hazel’s sketchbook. She raised a single eyebrow. “Oh, that’s certainly more...horse-y than I usually look.”
“I gave up. You move too much.”
Reyna inclined her head in acceptance. Still on her belly, she folded her arms and laid her head down on them.
It was weird to see Reyna so carefree. Weird in an undoubtedly good way, but weird nonetheless. Immortality had, perhaps ironically, taken years off her shoulders.
Hazel hadn’t invited Reyna to New Rome to draw her, but inevitably, that was what the visit had come to. She had written to her asking for advice — advice on running an entire city, advice on leading a quote unquote “child army” in times of peace, advice on not going crazy with stress — and Reyna had accepted so readily that a ventus spirit had brought her letter the very day Hazel had sent hers. Hazel had prepared for the visit with a single minded focus; she had brought a notebook for note taking, three different colours of pens, a highlighter, and her firmest handshake.
But then they had skipped the firm handshake and instead had hugged, tight, and Reyna had snagged a bowl of jelly beans from the Praetor office, and for the next few hours they had done nothing but lay on the floor of Hazel’s newly acquired Praetor Villa, swapping stories after stories, lazing around and sketching. Reyna had told her about the Hunt’s newest undertaking, some mythological boar or the other, and also about Thalia’s new obsession with 80’s rock. Hazel had told her about Lavinia’s latest shenanigans, and Gwen’s new job as a much valued mental health counsellor for the Legion. No notetaking had taken place. No praetor advice had been shared.
“It’s very good,” Reyna said, gesturing to Hazel’s drawing of Arion. “The likeness is stunning.”
Hazel beamed. “Really?”
“Of course!” Reyna scrambled to sit up. “It’s uncanny. This is really, really good, Hazel. It’s like…” Reyna made a hand gesture like she was pulling something; Hazel recognised it as an unconscious tick that Reyna had, one usually employed in Town Hall meetings when she was struggling to find the correct words to use for convincing reluctant denizens. “It’s like make a career out of it good,” she finished.
It was a warming compliment. Hazel’s smile grew wider; this was a pride unlike any other, something simple and easy and painless. Hazel had convinced herself to take pride in the smaller things more often. It made a dreary life just a little bit happier and easier when she could take pride in mastering her mist magic, in baking a sweet cupcake to perfection, in a good sparring session, in making a friend smile. But this pride in her artwork was somehow—brighter. It was something she’d dedicated long hours to.
“Horse artist?” Hazel said. “You think there’s a market out there for that?”
“Are you kidding me? Pet artist! Lucrative as they come.” Reyna laughed, an easy, lovely sound, and this too was unusual, this too was good, this too warmed Hazel. “People go crazy when they get pets. Put them in all cute little kinds of outfits and hire professional photographers, artists...I’m serious, Hazel. Business idea.”
“I’ll keep it in mind,” Hazel said, with a laugh of her own. Then she sighed and set down her pencil. “I appreciate the business advice, though honestly, what I need more is Praetor advice. I feel I’m going insane.”
“You’re doing wonderfully,” Reyna said. “You don’t need my advice, Hazel. You’re a force of nature.”
This was a sweet sentiment, and Reyna probably meant it, but it didn’t help Hazel’s case. “Thanks,” she said. “Like—genuinely. But I do feel...I do feel like I’m going insane. It’s—it’s a lot.”
Reyna’s eyebrows furrowed. She looked older at once, older in all senses of the word. Like the Reyna of before the Hunt, and the break from her duties—Reyna in charge, Praetor Reyna, sixteen year old Reyna with the world on her shoulders. She sat up straighter. “Is someone giving you trouble?” Reyna asked. “I was joking about Octavian earlier, but gods, if someone’s coming up to take his spot as Asshole of the Year—“
“No,” Hazel said quickly. “It’s nothing like that. That’s nothing. I could deal with someone like that no problem. It’s just—like you said...child army.”
Reyna exhaled softly and closed her eyes. “Yeah.”
Hazel hated bringing the mood down, hated evaporating Reyna’s good cheer, but she set that uncomfortableness aside for the time being. She pulled up her legs to her chest and rested her chin on her knees. And there was solidarity in this too, acknowledgment. “Yeah,” she agreed. “Everything’s—okay, now, for the time being. Doesn’t mean it’s going to stay that way forever.”
“That’s not really ever in your control,” Reyna said with a rueful smile. “But I do...I do get what you mean. I understand.”
“I thought you would,” Hazel said. “That’s why I wrote to you.” She’d thought of going to Frank with these thoughts too, and she was sure he’d give good advice, and be kind about it, but a part of her—a stubborn part, maybe, a conscious part, sure, but a valid part, nonetheless—hadn’t wanted to show a weakness to her co-Praetor, even one as familiar as Frank.
“I don’t know if I can give you any great advice,” Reyna said at last. “I don’t know if I can tell you anything you don’t already know, and you are doing a great job.”
Hazel tried to keep the sadness out of her smile. “Hm.”
“What I needed?” Reyna said. “What I needed when I was a praetor was...gods, just a ear. Just someone to bear it with me. Someone to understand. Jas—he was gone, and it was just me. For the longest time. But then with Frank, it wasn’t as hard again, because we could...we could switch off. We could share. That’s the only thing I can really tell you, Hazel. Only advice I can give you. Share. Share it with me, always. With Frank. Lavinia. Nico. Your friends. Don’t make the mistake of thinking you’re alone. You don’t have to be.”
“I know,” Hazel said. She’d been alone for so long in Asphodel she had thought she could survive loneliness, if she had to. But she didn’t have to. And she didn’t want to. “And you sold yourself short Reyna—you do give great advice.”
“Sounds like I didn’t say anything you didn’t already know.”
“But I think I needed to hear that from you,” Hazel said. “From someone else. You said it yourself—I just needed to know someone else understood. Otherwise it gets...it gets lonely.”
Reyna’s smile was soft. “You’ve got good instincts, Hazel. You’ll be just fine.”
Gods, she hoped. “Thanks for coming out here on such short notice. You probably were busy with the hunt.”
“Hey, don’t worry about it,” Reyna said, and there was that strange new lightness to her again, a relaxed happiness. “Haven’t you heard? I’ve got time now.”
Hazel picked her pencil back up. “You know, if you try sitting still, maybe I can still do a quick sketch. Before you leave.”
“Actually,” Reyna said, and was Hazel imagining things or did she actually look self-conscious? “I have a sketch request, if you’d accept.”
Hazel was intrigued. “Oh. Oh. Sure. Who?”
Reyna smiled a little sheepishly. “Don’t laugh okay? I miss him. Scipio.”
Pet artist...Hazel let out a small giggle. “Oh, so when you said people go crazy when they get pets, you meant—“
“I told you not to laugh!” But Reyna was laughing herself. It wasn’t sad, but it was sort of wistful. “I never dressed him up or whatever, but he’s been on my mind lately; I’ve been wondering when he’ll reform. Pegasi reform slow, apparently. I thought I’d never see him again in this life, but now that I’m a Hunter—holy Pluto, I can. And you drew Arion so well—“
“I think it’s sweet,” Hazel said. It was, exceedingly so. Hazel was trying to recall Skippy in her memories, and she felt a pang of sadness as she remembered him soaring above them during the War Games. It had been a long time since she had seen him, but she thought she remembered enough to manage a sketch for Reyna. “It might not be a perfect likeness—“
“I’ve got a photo.”
Now, Hazel absolutely couldn’t control herself. She smiled wide, a fond laugh bubbling in her chest. “Oh, Reyna—“
“Will it, or will it not make it easier to draw him?” Reyna asked, tips of her ears a faint pink.
“It’ll be perfect,” Hazel promised. “Where have you got it? In the Praetor office?”
Reyna reached into her pocket and brought out a worn out photograph. As much as it was hilarious, it was also heart-warmingly sweet, a touch melancholy. Hazel sympathised with her—she couldn’t imagine losing Arion. She probably would start carrying a picture of him everywhere too; it wasn’t a bad idea.
“Sure,” Hazel said, studying the picture. “I can do a drawing for you no problem. You can carry it everywhere along with the picture. A horse drawing in exchange for solid advice. My first political quid pro quo as Praetor.”
“That’s a terrible deal, Hazel. I can literally commission you, if you want.”
“I’ll settle for a refill of my jelly beans,” Hazel said, gesturing at the now empty bowl of jelly beans. They’d made fast work of it. It hadn’t survived the first hour.
Reyna sighed and stretched out on the floor. “Oh, I forgot,” she said glumly. “One more piece of advice, Praetor to Praetor.”
Hazel looked up. “Yeah?”
“Stock up on those beans,” Reyna said mournfully. “And never let anyone break into your stash. You’ll need them.”

As the fall progressed, Calypso, who had brought a couple of her favorite paintings with her to her new flat, decided to show some of her art to Annabeth. The architect student complimented them and encouraged her to continue creating art, but Calypso admitted that sometimes it was hard to find the motivation to do it on her own. She preferred making things that she could actually use, such as clothes, but she wasn’t opposed to continuing the art hobby if she found a motivator. Annabeth suggested she join the university art club that had classes for various skill levels and where she’d get feedback to help her get even better. The blonde girl wished she had more time to draw just for fun because her university assignments took a lot of her time, but in Calypso’s case her studies had quite little to do with art so maybe the club would offer her a nice break from history.
And so, only a week later Calypso was participating in her first art class at the university club house. She looked curiously around her to see if she might know someone there from her history lectures, but it turned out that wasn’t the case. However, her attention focused on a girl with curly brown hair, dark skin and eyes so unusually colored that they stood out even from afar. Something about her fascinated Calypso and she decided to approach her.
“Hi!” she greeted.
“Hello. Is this your first time here as well?” the other girl asked.
“Yes! An architect student recommended this club for me so I decided to give it a shot,” Calypso explained.
“Mmmh. I’m not a college student – yet because I’m graduating from high school a bit late – but they graciously let me join when I showed them my art portfolio. I just felt like the high school art classes don’t have much to give me anymore so I wanted to try something different.”
“I see. So, is art something you’d like to do for living? Or just a hobby?” Calypso asked.
“To be honest? I’m not entirely sure yet,” the girl admitted. “Something happened that I was kind of out of it for a few months and that’s why it was hard to think about my future for a while. But one way or another I’ll probably still keep doing art no matter what.”
“Oh. I’m sorry about that…” Calypso said sympathetically.
“It’s in the past now, I’m fine!” the girl reassured. “Uh, I already told you that but I didn’t even ask you your name yet… What is it?”
“Calypso Astal. Yes, I know, like that music style… or that Greek sorceress…”
“I was not going to say that.” the girl shook her head, smiling politely. “I was simply going to say it’s nice to meet you, Calypso! My name is Hazel, Hazel Levesque.”
“Well, nice to meet you too, Hazel,” Calypso said, shaking her hand. “Sorry, I hope I didn’t sound rude… I’m just used to people making weird comments about my name.”
“Oh, don’t worry about it! I can understand that very well. I’m a little too used to people’s comments about anything related to my life at this point…” she said sadly. Now Calypso knew what had drawn her to Hazel in the first place: somehow she had sensed that the girl was an outsider, just like she was.
“So, how long have you been drawing, Hazel?” Calypso decided to change the topic.
“Since I was small. It’s always felt like a good way to express my thoughts and also distract myself when things weren’t that great. What about you, though?”
“I think I’ve always been more or less interested in it, but I didn’t start drawing and painting more seriously until I was in high school. I had a lot of time in my hands then…” Calypso said vaguely.
“That’s cool! What else do you do in your free time?” Hazel asked when she realized Calypso wouldn’t elaborate more.
“I like all kinds of handicrafts – you know, from sewing to building small objects and tending flowers – and I also enjoy singing… although usually I do that just on my own…” Calypso admitted, sounding a little bit embarrassed.
“Wow, sounds like you’re such a multitalent!” the younger girl exclaimed. “I help take care of a horse – his name is Arion and a friend who is good with horses claims that he’s loud mouthed even though I have no idea how he can say that. Arion is just vocal, that’s all.”
Calypso snorted at that.
“Yeah, I believe you. My flatmate would probably claim that he’s entirely capable of understanding everything his dog says, though.”
“Aw, your flatmate has a dog?” Hazel asked.
“Yep, he does, but he is not allowed to have it in our flat. Though he still did, when I arrived, and the dog broke my desk. I wasn’t too happy with my flatmate after that but he hasn’t brought the dog in since then,” Calypso said, now able to smile at the memory.
“I’d love to have one too but for some reason a lot of the dogs seem a little afraid of me. I don’t know why.” Hazel shrugged. “But my, uh, friend studies to become a vet and he’s around animals a lot.”
“That sounds like a cool career. I never really got to be around animals a lot in my childhood… But I do remember enjoying watching birds from the window.” Calypso also remembered wishing she could fly freely like them but she decided to not say that out loud, wanting to focus on more positive things.
The conversation died off because the teacher started explaining the participants the schedule of their meetings and what kind of projects they would make. The first assignment sounded like a fun one in Calypso’s opinion: it was called “If I could be any other living creature”. That meant the students were allowed to draw or paint themselves as any animal or plant they could imagine themselves being. At first Calypso thought about drawing one of her favorite flowers but then she remembered her and Hazel’s discussion only from a moment ago and how she had wished she could be a bird. And that gave her an idea.
The bird she chose was called the Golden Oriole. She had only seen one in her childhood on a trip to northern Greece but she still remembered the yellow feathers and the dark wings very well. Her own hair had been lighter back then as well, more of golden blonde than the caramel brown it was naturally now (before the dyeing) which had really stood out with her dark eyes. That’s why her mother had teased her about looking like Golden Oriole. Thinking about those times made Calypso feel a bit homesick but she decided to channel her emotions into the painting instead of wallowing in them. Once she had gotten started, she took a peek at what Hazel was making. Hazel herself had depicted herself as a horse but somehow she had also time to sketch a bear next to it. That confused Calypso. “What does the bear represent?” she asked Hazel.
“It’s gonna be a panda,” Hazel clarified, “and it’s supposed to depict my best friend. I felt he deserved to be drawn too. He is big and strong like a panda but surprisingly soft inside… I want to show how these two animals, though very different, can get along really well.”
“That’s a great topic. And he sounds like a good guy,” Calypso said approvingly.
“He is,” Hazel nodded and took a look at Calypso’s work. “That looks pretty! So, you consider yourself a bird?”
“Well, at least I’d like to be.” She shrugged. “Maybe one day.”
“I sense something is restricting you,” Hazel commented. “But don’t worry, you don’t have to tell me more.”
“Thanks,” Calypso said with relief, and after that the girls focused on their drawings again.
…
Once the class was over, the girls continued talking on their way to the bus stop.
“I’m sorry, this might be a strange thing to say but… I got a bit different vibe from you than from most people in the class. Do you know why?” Hazel inquired.
“Could be because I’m technically a foreigner,” Calypso replied. “I was also homeschooled so… I haven’t really been in touch with people of my age a lot.”
“Really?” Hazel raised her eyebrows. “Where are you from?”
“Greece. But we moved from there when I was 10.”
“Your English is so good that I wouldn’t have been able to tell you’re not from here. I’ve lived in many places too. I was born in New Orleans but I’ve also lived in Alaska and San Francisco…”
“What brought you here, then?” Calypso asked.
Hazel seemed to hesitate a bit. “Uh, it’s a very long story. One I’d rather not talk about right now. But after I recovered from an accident I’ve been trying to find my place. My best friend moved to study here and he’s the closest family I have so I decided I’m gonna follow him.”
Calypso noticed that Hazel blushed a bit when she was talking about her friend.
“And your parents were OK with you moving?” she asked, having too much experience with overprotective parents.
“Uh…” Hazel started awkwardly. “I don’t really have any. Mom is dead and my dad only shows up when it’s convenient to him. I lived with a relative for a few months before I turned 18 but once I was that old, she told me that I was free to make my own decisions.”
“I’m so sorry. About your parents.” Calypso said sympathetically. For some reason she seemed to be pulling a lot of people with tragic backgrounds towards her.
“It might be awful to say this but I think my mom is in a better place now. She suffered a lot in her life,” Hazel said as an afterthought.
Calypso only nodded, because really, what could you say to that? The other girl seemed to sense her hesitance because she continued:
“But don’t worry about me. Frank is the best and most protective friend I could have. And here I have found some new ones as well!”
“That is good!” Calypso said genuinely. She already felt like she could relate to this girl and wished a brighter future for her. “Um, I have some things I need to do at home but I’ll see you next week, right? And if you ever want to hang out outside the class, just message me.”
“I will!” Hazel promised and waved to her as goodbye.
…
Leo was making something to eat in the kitchen when Calypso arrived and he looked at the package in Calypso’s arms curiously.
“Hiya Sunshine, what you got there?” he asked.
“I was at the art club and did this,” Calypso said, taking the drawing from the bag and showing it to Leo.
“That’s a cool bird,” Leo mumbled while trying to swallow his sandwich. “Is there some deeper meaning to it?”
“Yes, it’s supposed to depict me,” Calypso answered, emphasizing the last word.
Leo looked back and forth between the drawing and the artist.
“I’m not really seeing the connection there.” He narrowed his eyes as if trying to see the drawing clearer. “You look nothing like that bird.”
“Leo Valdez!” Calypso yelled and marched angrily into her room, leaving poor Leo wonder what he did wrong.
“I just meant that you’re way prettier than any drawing of a bird could ever be,” he mumbled to himself before sighing and focusing on his meal again.

Because I want to talk some headcanons/background about Demeter, here we are!
Both she and Hera actively fight in the war against the Titans, though Demeter is there from the beginning while Hera joins later.
She meets her first lover, a minor (or demi) agricultural god in Crete, before the start of the war. After it, she goes back to Crete and she and Karmanor hit it off very well. It’s a relationship that lasts (and is exclusive) for years, and they get two children from it, Khrysothemis and Eubouleus. Pretty much everyone expects them to marry, because... why wouldn’t they?
Except they don’t. Hera and Demeter have a few arguments about it that ends in a pretty ugly fight and Demeter’s first longer stay away from Olympus. It’s pretty easy when Crete is right there with Karmanor, and her kids are happy to spend time there. She doesn’t quite escape all her family like that, though, since Zeus is attending festivities on Crete every year. It’s probably that (he does come to talk to her), that becomes the start of and later leads into her relationship with Zeus.
It doesn’t last long, but they do have fun, and it’s an easy, companionable thing - and so Demeter is pretty surprised when Zeus starts talking marriage, but he at least drops it when she puts her foot down (neither of them know she’s even pregnant at this point). She’s relieved, but not necessarily surprised. More surprised he doesn’t demand she take an oath of virginity/to remain unmarried, however. Persephone’s birth means she’s back to staying more consistently on Olympus, but it doesn’t mean Demeter is there at all times, and Olympus means there’s many willing eyes and hands to watch her daughter as she goes about Greece.
That’s how she meets her third lover, a little after Poseidon and young Athena had their... dispute about would-be Athens and it gained its name. Mecon is mortal, young (and Athenian), and absolutely star-struck by this goddess, and Demeter is (perhaps unfortunately) drawn to that. They have a romp hidden away, and unfortunately right afterwards Demeter realizes she went through with sleeping with a mortal and gets a bit of a panic attack... and loses control of her divinity. We all know what happens to mortals caught in the full glory of a god’s divinity. Mecon dies in Demeter’s arms, and she turns him into a poppy as a memorial and to remember him by (it’s one of her sacred plants from hereon out).
Little Persephone is her light in this, and the young goddess grows beautifully; later, youthful but old enough to draw attention, Persephone gets several suitors and when Demeter gets annoyed and starts barring people from her and Persephone’s rooms but then that not being enough (her daughter should not need to marry and will not be made to), she up and leaves with Persephone.
Persephone then disappearing quite a bit later is a blow, and a much worse one when she finds out what happened, because Zeus knows what she thinks of marriage, and she thought he respected her better than he apparently does. One could think Poseidon would have better sense of timing than trying to approach Demeter while she’s upset and searching for her daughter, but he... does not. (The result of that is Arion and Despoina, and Demeter has so little of an idea how to care for Arion, as he seems nothing but a horse at first, that she leaves him in a mortal, if royal, stable.) This incident hardly makes her any more inclined to return to Olympos aside from the rare meeting, so she splits her time between Eleusis and Crete (Karmanor is a stable, long-running “friends with benefits” relationship at this point and they like it that way).
The marriage of Cadmus and Harmonia is, really, the first greater divine celebration Demeter has attended. It’s also where she first meets Iasion, son of Zeus and Elektra. This time, she doesn’t immediately rush into anything - this time, she’s both more reserved and careful, but there’s an immediate spark between them and, even if Iasion is a mortal demi-god, she keeps going back. Better prepared Demeter might be this time, but she’s also less careful when she does end up having sex with Iasion, and Zeus... well. He notices.
It does not end well.
(Usually Iasion just dies after this, but as for my headcanon, since there are some vague indications you can use;) Luckily for both Demeter and Zeus and their continued relationship, Demeter basically blowing up and breaking down on Zeus has him resurrect Iasion, but he’s now just plain mortal. She gets a mortal lifetime with him, though, and they have three children (Ploutos, Philomelos, Korybas).
