I met a cat once, the cat was a stray. Orange, bright fur that made it stand out with brown eyes akin to the earth's fertile soil, with a white underbelly to represent its pure intentions. It was friendly to all, and loved playing with anyone it met. Never would it pass up a chance to get as many head rubs as it could or get the tasteful delight of tuna and treats whenever an old lady walked by. I always saw a certain woman who came to feed it, it meowed in delight whenever so. It often lurked around the cleaner's shed, next to the carpark, curling up calmly under the bicycles or where the cleaners rested. Other times, it rested on the ledge of the carpark where vehicles parked, taking a peaceful nap or grooming itself to perfection.

It meowed happily whenever I walked by to pet it, brushing against my leg with a smile I couldn’t see. But it radiated warmth, and stared blankly and quietly whenever I left. Never would it refuse my visits, running up to me the moment I crossed the small road from the pathway to the cleaner's shed, endless choruses of noises came from it till I replied back with a sound of my own, as if it thought I was a lifeless body. Even the cleaner's knew me by the time I came by the fourth time that week, the cat ignoring the bashful chats in the background as its tail swayed happily, watching my keychains clang against my wallet with a hypnotised gaze.

Then came school, as if the hourglass flipped, my time came shorter and shorter to the cat with each visit, its cries growing fainter in the distance with my mind clouded with worry. Had I forgot something? Did I miss a deadline? What if I'm late?! My mind ran wild with thoughts, drowning it all out with the music that blasted angrily into my ears. If only I could notice the longing eyes that I felt bore into me, faded into the morning breeze that blew soon after as I ran off into the distance, awaiting my friends.

Why was it so quiet now?

There were no more greetings at the other side of the road, no longer did I see the pumpkin coloured fur that excitedly greeted me whenever I walked pass. No longer did I feel my heart swell with pride as fur brushed against my calf, no longer did I see ears twitch and tail wagging when the sounds of paper plates shift along with ravenous chewing. I stared blankly under the bicycle, now the carpark that laid dormant, not a single piece of cat hair insight. Maybe if I had stayed a little longer, ignored my restraints for time a little while more, held back on the music's volume, I would've notice the soft coughing that grew louder with each passing day, the black and red bloody spot under its eye too. I wept quietly as I trekked away, numbly clinging onto the fish bait of hope it would still be around, just another night. Another night where the moon would shine its glimmer of light down on us, where I could feel its soft fur one last time, and comfort its cries as it struggled to walk.

Maybe it crossed the road, the rainbow road. I miss you discord, please don't go, I know you're there.
