HIII if you don’t mind sharing, what are your fav klaroline fics? New and old, I’m in need of new reads 🙏
I'm probably not the best person to be doing new fic recs. 🥲 I have sadly not been reading that much Klaroline myself these days. When I do read fic, it's for other stuff. So my recs are either old or new-ish. 😂 But hopefully you can find something to your liking that haven't read yet here.
Buckle up because I took my sweet time with this list, nonnie.
Tumblr media
. Inertia Overcome by @avari20
The first KC fanfic I remember reading the reason why I finally got pulled into the fandom after years of watching TVD as a reasonable spectator (so rly, if you guys can't stand to see me around anymore after all this time, it's this fic's fault for being so good). Honestly one of this fandom's statement works. If you haven't read it yet, please do.
. Timeless by @marvelouskatie
Same as the above. One of the most iconic KC fics of all time imho. The canon AU to end all canon AU. When I first decided to come out of the shadows and create a tumblr and actually start interacting with folks, this was the first fic that was recced to me. I was very grateful then, and now I'm here to pass this knowledge on.
. Picturesque by @supernutellastuff
Honestly of the sweetest, most heartwarming fics I've ever read! It's a human AU that's a How I Met Your Mother sort of adaptation, and honestly the first time I've ever enjoyed HIMYM. I love a good ensemble fic and this is just it! Supernutella is so talented.
. Quiet Light by @definedareasofuncertainty
This fic was WRITTEN FOR ME because of how much I pestered my friend Luiza about Carolijah and this will forever feel like a trophy to my heart. 🥰 It made me feel ALL THE FEELINGS. I hated Caroline, I loved Caroline, I loved my baby Elijah, I hated him, I also hated Klaus (he's such a fucking asshole omfg), but then the end was just DHAGHDDASAS!! You think you're in for a certain kind of story and it turns out to be so much more. It is, deep down, about the brothers, how selfish they are, how they can hurt each other more than anyone, but how they love one another above anything else, even when they want to kill each other (and fall in love with their brother's girl!!!). It's beautiful, like everything Luiza writes, and it genuinely made me cry.
. long limbs and frozen swim by @definedareasofuncertainty
I saw a discussion the other day about how whoever wrote this fic JUST GOT IT, and I have to say I completely agree with the person who made that comment. Luiza just NAILS Caroline's grief and loneliness after her mother's death, how isolating and gut-wrenching it is. Klaus being the person who finds her, who knows exactly what to say without her ever having to spell it out, the one who can truly see her, is so honest too. This fic is sensitive and absolutely beautiful. Luiza's writing is perfection and this is for sure one of my all-time favorites.
. Whisper to me, Help me remember by @lalainajanes
This story reimagines the plot with the "villains" of TO S3 in a way that proves my point that the premise of that season was good, but execution was absolute crap. All of the potential the De Martels had to be incredible antagonists was completely destroyed at the hands of the show writers - but explored to perfection by Laine's much more capable hands. Klaus is freed after 10 years in captivity to find that Caroline had been working with Tristan this whole time in order to take him down - except something is not quite right about that. While you're at it, please read all of Laine's fics! It's a delight.
. Into the Woods by @jinxedwood
I wept when I read this because it's the post-TO canon fic I didn't even know I needed. Caroline's search for a way to stop her twins' merger ends up leading her to someone who's been watching over her on the Other Side. 😭 I thought I'd always rather live in denial when it came to how TO ended, but this fic made my heart so full! Also, jinxedwood's use of fae mythology here was incredible.
. All I Need by @euvixen
This story is HOT. It taught me things about the werewolf AU universe I was not prepared to learn, but I am a much happier person after reading it. It's a canon mates AU that will leave you 🥵🥵🥵🥵 I speak as though the story was merely about the smut, but it's actually much more than that. A TVD S3 reimagine of sorts that is incredibly satisfying. That's my favorite season of TVD, but this is still even better.
. the birth and death of the day by @little-miss-sunny-daisy
Anyone who's known me for a some time knows how this fic was my entire personality for a while there. I'm obsessed with Kelly's writing, and I have this fic on a freaking pedestal. I first started reading it when it was on a six years hiatus, and I was *so* into it I didn't even bother me that it might never get updated because it was so good I was just happy I'd found it. But then my silly comments inspired Kelly to come back to it, finish it, and it has honestly been my greatest accomplishment as a part of this fandom because this is a masterpiece. It's a TVD/Supernatural crossover where Caroline is a step-sister to the Superbros. It's truly, truly epic, with beautiful writing. This could genuinely be a show. It's amazing, just read it.
. this is a harvest by @highgaarden
This, right here, is the perfect Klaroline-within-canon story. This is the story that put my revolt to rest and gave my spirit some much deserved peace where those two are concerned. This is exactly what canon should've been like. I'm not even joking, this is IT. If you'd asked me what I thought the perfect Klaroline development should be like I probably would've said something very vague because I couldn’t explain it, I’m not that great or creative a writer, but now I can just show you this story and let you bask in the amazingness of a fantastic read that will not only keep you thoroughly entertained, but will also be the answer to all the questions you didn't even know you had.
. Paradise Lost by Borzoi
When i grow up, I want to learn how to write like Borzoi. All of their fics are incredible novella-like reads. It's addictive. And this is probably my favorite (it varies though, sometimes I'm in a Parisian Deal era). What happens after Klaus and Caroline sleep together in 5x11, and how they eventually find their way back to each other. It's just one of those stories that you can't stop reading after you start. It's so rich, so deep, so perfectly IC. One of those fics to end all fics.
. The Stubborn Grace of Being Loved Regardless by @helpless-in-sleep One of the modern day classics, if you will. This fic is such a stunning, vivid and delicate picture of Caroline's mind as she was dealing with the consequences of the abuse she suffered at the hands of Damon. She's still human, but she's probably more IC than we've seen her ever on the show when it comes to this. The bond she forms with Klaus is truly incredible too, and speaks a lot of how the two of them really do have a lot in common (even with Caroline still as a human), but it's really the Caroline study part of the story that touches me. The writing is absolutely beautiful as well.
. it takes a while to settle down by theviolinist
This story is a punch to your stomach, but it is PERFECTION in 8k words. It's hot, it's bittersweet, it's SO in character and, in my head, I kinda like to pretend that this is what happened before Caroline married Stefan. lol
. Wanderlust by @bellemorte180 Anybody who was a part of fandom around the time this story was being published can tell you how much of an EVENT it was. There were discussion groups about the mystery. It was so entertaining. Erica's attention to detail and how she wove the little clues throughout the chapters made this a genuine thriller. I particularly some of the side-characters here. It's honestly another fandom staple I think everyone should read.
--
In terms of newer fics that I can rec you, I have two that are on my TBR. One of them is a WIP that I've been slowly going through, and the other one I know was recently finished.
. make them bow by @stars-and-darkness
This was recced to me by two friends recently and I started reading it a while back and thought it was incredible! I have sadly been awful with keeping up with stuff, but just based on the raving reviews and the five chapters I read, I fully believe it to be just as awesome as it seems to be. The writing was so good, and I was just in love with Klaus' voice in this story. It was so reminescent of early-days TVD Klaus, which is by far my favorite Klaus of all. Sexy and dangerous and so smooth. I loved it! Need to get back to it.
. Wolf Club by @Radioactive79
Listen, if you like kid fics, this is absolutely for you. The whole story is narrated by an eight-year-old OC, the daughter of Ray Sutton, the first werewolf Klaus kills when he's trying to start his mass-production of hybrids. She's a little wolf herself, and a while little thing who was subjected to her fair share of child trauma. Klaus has no idea what to do with her, but ends up taking her with him as continues on his journey, and ends up forging a bond with the little girl. I cannot tell you how delicious this story is. It has Klaroline, yes, but for me the little girl is the absolute star of the company. I usually hate OCs, especially children, in fics, but this one is AMAZING. Seriously. The way this story is written is glorious. I can't recommend it enough.

Don’t mind me, still brainstorming ideas for fics. In fact, how about this one? It’s a combination of two of my biggest fandoms.
Stranger Things/Inception AU
Richard Harrington has a reputation as a ruthless businessman. Anything he wants - sales, mergers, whatever the fuck - he gets. Even in situations where the other party is emphatically against complying no matter what, he seems to convince them… somehow.
But then, [X Business] comes into his crosshairs. Previously run by a guy named Al Munson, he has since passed away, leaving the business in the hands of his ne’er do well son, Eddie. His son, who surprises Richard with his resistance to corporate takeover, if not his actual business acumen. He’ll need to be dealt with. So Richard calls in his secret weapon.
Enter Steve Harrington, Richard’s long suffering son, who went into dreamshare at his father’s request - demand, more like - to give him (Richard) a leg up when dealing with stubborn people. If someone refuses Richard, he’ll just send in Steve, who’ll secretly go into their dreams and, after some adjustments, have them completely changing their minds about things. Steve is damn good at this, but he also hates it. The ruthless business side, at least. He’s often wondered if he might do other, more positive things with this job.
Eddie and Steve eventually meet in the dreamscape. And, surprise surprise, Eddie has experience with dream-sharing. And he’s smart enough to figure out that this Steve guy is not one of his own projections. But he strings him along a bit, because why not, right? He is fucking gorgeous, after all. They’re together for hours in dreams, but of course Steve is always long gone by the time Eddie wakes up. Steve, meanwhile, is STRESSED. No matter what he tries, he can’t seem to dig any deeper into what actually makes Eddie tick. So that he can work his magic, you know? And he’s worried about how his dad will react. Also he is absolutely falling for Eddie. Falling HARD. (Eddie is too)
Fast forward. They somehow meet IRL. Recognition. Confession. Smooch. (Maybe more than smooch, but I’m flexible on that part.) Maybe some angsty misunderstandings - does Eddie actually care for Steve, or is he just leading him on? Is this all part of Steve’s (really Richard’s) plan of corporate manipulation? - but they work it out eventually. They realize that, not only does Steve hate doing this constantly for his asshole dad, but Eddie isn’t even interested in running [X Business] at all - he hated his dad, and he just wants to be a musician. But he also doesn’t want the company to end up in Richard Harrington’s grubby hands. Which is fair. And so, plans are made.
Insert exciting plot stuff here. Steve tells his dad off, essentially that he’s either gonna have to actually pay a dreamshare expert to do his dirty work (unlikely, as he is a stingy fuck and dreamshare, even the more legitimate kind, ain’t cheap. The more underhanded stuff doubly so), or he’s all on his own, because Steve is OUT. Eddie gives complete control of [X Company] to someone else (Wayne?), who turns out to be EVEN MORE stubborn than Eddie. And then Steddie rides off into the sunset, happily dreaming together for the rest of their lives.
Alternate ending idea: Steddie turns the tables on Richard and incept him instead. Maybe inspire him to dissolve his company like Robert Fischer in the movie. A heist-esque story where the heister becomes the heistee. Either way, the important part is that Steve and Eddie are together and happy.
Needs work overall, of course, but I like the few seeds of idea that I have. Plus the world always needs more Inception crossovers. The world of dreamshare is a hugely untapped gold mine. Every fandom should have at least one Inception AU.

You know what I want (that I don’t think has been done but please correct me if it has)–
Genshin Impact, but School– like a Twisted Wonderland AU sort of school thing.
Now, I’ve not played TW (*cries in EU*) but from what I know I don’t think it would actually affect potential story stuff too much; it’d be a relatively clean merger. I’m literally more just thinking in terms of: the elements or countries are different houses, the Archons are their respective Head of House and MC/Reader has been Isekai’d here via wishing means despite lacking a vision (means of enrolment?).
Now just some random brainstorming thoughts because the idea consumed me–:
As a general thing, either GI is already a TW sort of game in MC’s world or it’s not changed from how it already is and this is just an alternate world to the one MC and we know and remember. Maybe they play both games and this world is a weird merger of the two (not that MC is imagining this or has any influence over it; it’s just a weird coincidence, but that would probably muddy the waters so likely not)?
Because of Zhongli being a hidden/retired Archon I could see the dorm being more so run democratically, maybe having Ningguang being voted/recommended for the position by her fellow classmates while Zhongli chills out (read: slacks off) in the local gardens (boi still probably gets straight A’s in everything except Business & Personal Finance/Economics).
In regards to the Fatui and how they’d fit into this… I think it’d depend on how the Houses are set up. If the Houses were represented via Country then they could just be fellow students, but aged down where appropriate. If the Houses were represented via Element then I’d be tempted to make them teachers, or students from a rival school. The problem with the Element option is the Tsaritsa; I wouldn’t know how to keep their connection with her while keeping her as the Head of House. Something to think about maybe.
Aether and Lumine could be transfer students? Or just not in the story at all? Or maybe from a different school? Up for debate; depends on how much you’d want them there I guess so it’d be up to the writer. Paimon could literally just take Grim’s spot regardless lol, but again that’d be up to the writer.
Acts/Chapters wouldn’t change much, both games are similar in that each Chapter and Act is set in or revolves around a different Country/House (to my limited understanding of TW at least). So A/C1 (not constellations) is to do with Mondstadt, A/C2 is Liyue and so on and so forth. How you’d transfer the actual story to this world’s format though is… ehhhhhhhh—
- For Mondstadt, the idea of Dvalin being a little chibi version of himself is too adorable to pass up and so maybe the stuff with him still happens, being corrupted and saving him before he goes on a massive rampage (either the stuff with the Abyss/Khaenri’ah isn’t a thing here, or it’s one of two options: 1. Rival school that dabbles in the “darkness” element or 2. Is the old school that the current school was built on top of (what the story would be here though I don’t know; I’d need to brush up/know more about the lore)) and by the end he continues to be a sort of cute familiar to Venti that occasionally makes an appearance. Should note that he’s still normal sized/a big boi when corrupted, but after MC frees him he takes on a smaller and more approachable form (please don’t ask me how that works in this world, I don’t know—)
- Liyue would be… not too different from the original? Actually, maybe this is how Ningguang becomes the new Head of House? The whole of Act 2 was orchestrated by Zhongli wanting to see if Liyue could continue without him in canon, so maybe this is the same? Maybe the identity of this Head of House is a secret that only other HoH know about (as well as Childe; he and Zhongli are maybe surprisingly good friends and so the latter gets Childe to help him “step down”). So they do something really stupid and summon Osial— which could be an obnoxious rival of Zhongli’s from another school that’s come to ruin the House’s reputation or something, or is straight up some sea monster they’ve summoned to up that stakes. I kinda like the first idea, especially if you did a twist of him owing Zhongli for whatever reason so he’s only here to help in order to remove Zhongli from his long-standing position (I’m thinking just keep the fact that Zhongli is actually a dragon a thing and that he’s only still here because he can be, likely because of ageing differences or because despite him being a great student he deliberately flunks the important exams to get held back; fully up for debate though)
- For Inazuma… I don’t know dude, it’s just a dictatorship? Maybe something happened with Makoto and she either left or sadly passed and Ei has no idea how to run her House so just straight up takes full control of it in a negative way? And MC shows her the power of friendship or something— I don’t know, I really don’t know. All I do know is that Yae Miko would be a menace; personal space? What’s that, she’s never heard of it. Girl be overtly flirting with MC every step of the way regardless of gender; fingertips trailing across their shoulders as she circles behind them, tipping their head back with a gentle pressure against their skin, leaning way too close to their ears and space as she talks to them… yeah, other students would not be too happy about that (tbh Yae got me bad lol; not my favourite character, but she’s fun and I’d definitely give her the waifu title– anyway!)
Is it too late to mention this is intended to be a “romance game”?
And considering my love of yandere’s— fuck it, throw a load of them in here too if you want; take your pick.
- Sumeru— I don’t know, going through these is kinda exhausting. All I will say is that this is the tech House and that Dottore has to be involved with whatever happens here. Maybe it’s still an experiment he’s running and has roped the kids into (if he’s a teacher, though I doubt it’d be much different if it was a student either) or something else, but he has to be there. My bias for him is really showing lol, but he has to be; he needs to be the villain of this Act/Chapter. Plus it’d be kinda funny to see him the next time MC went to class and have them freak out as to why he’s still here when he should probably be in jail (man totally either has some sort of dirt on the headmaster (Heavenly Principles?) to keep him in the school or he’s kept as a teacher to better monitor him and his movements).
Naturally we can’t talk about Fontaine at the moment, so I won’t go into it (—except for the fact that I am weak for Neuvillette; what is it with tall, sophisticated dragon (alleged/theorised) men that completely knock me off my feet 😭 urg, I want him and Zhongli to passively-aggressively battle for the right to court me, is that too much for a girl to ask??)
Anyway, I don’t think there’s anything else I want to add right now. Just throwing thoughts out into the aether, so to speak--

Ok, new profile picture new me I guess! so here I am considering to make a list of all the wips I have under my belt just to hold myself accountable (while simultaneously convincing my stupid brain I have no time to join a new fandom... I’m looking at you Evilive):
Let’s split this between fandoms shall we?:
Word of Honor:
- Children of the Red Dust: the modern!au where ZZS is trying to adopt ZCL but WKX’s job as a Mergers & Acquisitions lawyer gets in the way, with a sprinkle of traditional chinese opera on top
20/33 chapters already done, a new one on the way. I feel vaguely positive about this and I think I can manage updating before the end of the year or the beginning of the next. I’ve updated very little this year, compared to 2022 but.. I do love the story and I want to see it through;
- They Got Exits Covered: the sci-fi!au where the author knows nothing about omegaverse trope etiquette and rolls with it anyway
2/3 chapters already done......... fellas is is bad that I can’t bring myself to finish this one? I have re-written the last chapter at least 5 times, I discovered that I hate writing smut (unfathomable, ik, considering I have written even 45k of dirty sex in the past) if it involves baby-making (??), and I hate myself every minute that I have to sit and work on this project so.......... it will take some more time I fear. the premise was good, we stan a good premise and I love the vibe I got going on but.. meh. we will see;
- (unnamed project 1): aka the noir!au that I really want to bring to the surface but currently have no energy to plan out
0/0 done, none, nada. this one is fun bc I really want to write it and I got at least two chapters done in my drafts already. I wanted shorter chapters for this one, little to no dialogue, more ambiance and vibes than plot.. it’s so close to get started...! but I want to PLAN this right. never been much of a planner tho. idk where to start. does anyone know how to go beyond the ‘plot-points checklist’ phase? bc that’s honestly all I can muster for this one and it frustrates me to no end.
Winter Begonia:
- The Way Home: which is the retelling of the entire drama, episode by episode, through the lenses of a heavier, more overt romantic vibe between the leads (basically a drama retelling with additional historical context from the novel and my own research)
14/49 chapters done and I have already drafted most plot points up to the 25th.. but see my issue here. I love this fic. I. Love. This. Fic. but I cannot focus on it until Children of the Red Dust is done, bc I need multiple steps to get this over with:
need to rewatch the drama diligently, while taking notes (would really like a dvd set of this one, but subs alas..);
need to use the existing dialogue of the show and put it on the page, describing how characters move and react on screen;
add my own new fresh scenes to the already existing plot, which takes a lot of time;
research the hell of the time period and the details of the traditional opera technicalities (bc I’m not very smart, I love to suffer and I love this stuff too much to care);
come up with ways to tie everything up nicely without it sounding cringe;
read the actual novel to tweak things and fill up details from side characters’ lives and.. if you know the original story you probably know how annoying some of the characters are, which makes it difficult to handle at times.
so....l..........I need me time to mentally prepare for that ok? but it’s a long term project and I don’t care if I have no readers. I’m cool;
- Everything will Bloom: aka the follow-up to The Way Home............so it means I have to finish that one first
2 drafted chapters done already. but I need me TONS of research for this baby. it will be set in the early 50’s so I want to get this right. which means that I am reading everything I can and sourcing everything I come across as I go and I’ve been doing this for almost 3 years now. I’m not messing around. I want these characters to have a life after the epilogue!
MDZS:
- necRomance: the crack au people still reblog from my tumblr, the idiotic one, you know the gist
80/100 chapters done, not picking it back up. I don’t care for it anymore, it was a crack project anyway. also, not a fan of receiving comments and get excited to open the inbox just to be told to go fuck myself for not finishing this one. so uncool mate! totally got me out of the fandom. I don’t think I’ll ever get back to it so.. yeah. pick your battles folks *shrugs emoji*
STUFF I AM TOTALLY NOT PLANNING DESPITE BEING BUSY WITH IRL STUFF/RESEARCHING/WORKING ON WIPS:
that one Good Omens human!au inspired by an Italian comedy I am not writing;
that one Evilive fix-it I am not fantasizing about on the daily and I really want to dig my teeth into rn;
that one (extremely unnecessary) [insert classic Victorian novel title] epilogue retelling I’ve not lost sleep researching for;
(3 hypothetical original works that will definitely never see the light of day)
———
and that shall be all folks :D please admire my new profile picture, which I took from the manga She loves to cook and She loves to eat and edited to have a sense of continuity with my previous one (which was Jin Ling from the MDZS manhua). please get yourself a treat after reading this! and check out any of my current projects on ao3 if you’d like but please read the tags! most of my stuff is pretty heavy and at times either obscenely long or dead-dove-ish so.. please be careful!
- Niki (they/them) on my way to 30. can I get a wahoo??
my AO3: humble_prompt_machine

A lot like ‘Us’ masterlist
Tumblr media
Monday morning rose brighter than it had a right to be; to the point that the sun was stabbing you in the eyes. You had been over and over the plan in your head throughout the weekend. By now, you were absolutely sure that you had mapped every second of the day and nothing could go out of hand.
The plan went sideways almost as soon as it started.
You dropped your bag at the threshold of the lecture room with a loud crash. All of the last row turned to look at who was that much of a klutz. You did not meet anyone’s eye as you took a seat at the very end of the top row. Maybe that would make you inconspicuous.
It did not.
“Y/N!”
Madison slid next to you on the bench, followed by her brood of friends. Lacey and the other two, whose names you didn’t remember.
“How are you, Sweetie?” Madison asked sympathetically. “You looked awfully ill when you left the other day. We were so worried about you! Weren’t we, Mer?”
Meredith- you remembered her name now- did not look worried in the least.
“What happened?” Madison asked.
“I was just really faint,” you answered automatically, having anticipated this. “I’m feeling much better now. Thank you so much.”
Madison looked relieved. “I’m so glad, Y/N. I wanted to check on you over the weekend, but I didn’t have your number or knew where you lived. You have to give me your number right away.”
You did, and she texted you immediately.
“Awesome!” she said. “Now you have my number, too.”
You tried to smile. “Hey, if it’s not too much, could you tell me what I missed in the two days?”
Madison became animated instantly. “Well, lets see. After you left, there was advanced legal writing by professor Mills, then Supreme Court Litigation by Professor Mcleod and Organisation and transactions law after that. Most of Friday was free except for another lecture by Professor Mills. I have the notes. Once you put your email id on the class database, I’ll forward mine to you.”
“That’s seriously more than I can ask from you,” you said, feeling small.
She placed her hand on top of yours. “You’re not asking. I’m offering.”
“Thank you!” You said, looking down.
Madison huffed. “You thank me too much, Y/N! Besides, you really didn’t miss any of the fun.”
“What do you mean?”
“Professor Winchester didn’t show up either,” Lacey giggled. “Didn’t we turn up fifteen minutes early for his class on Thursday? And the man never came.”
Your stomach lurched, a feeling you hadn’t quite experienced in years had you feeling lightheaded.
“Well, he didn’t completely disappear,” said the blonde. “He did turn up for the last half an hour of his lecture on Friday and outlined the syllabus of the semester.”
“He looked stiff and serious. Nothing like his first day here. And even that day he stormed off, remember?”
“Oh yeah,” Madison nodded. “Right after you left, Y/N. It was a bit weird.”
You swallowed nervously, your forehead already clammed up. What was it? Was it fear or worry that you felt for Sam? You had been so wrapped up in your chaos that you hadn’t stopped to consider about Sam, assuming that he must have grown passive and wouldn’t care about the past anymore.
Sam had looked warm and at ease with himself that day, happy even, while you had only survived all these years. You’d be lying to yourself, if you said that the image of Sam on the podium, smiling at the students hadn’t felt like a knife in your gut.
But if he had not turned up for classes either… did that mean….
There was noise at the front and you saw Sam on the podium. He looked every bit as dressed up and neat as he had on your first day, if not a bit more severe.
He greeted the class curtly, and instantly jumped to the lesson. You tried not to stare, but it was hard to look away. It was harder still to keep looking. His features seemed more angular now, and he was definitely leaner than when you had first set your eyes on him. Today he was dressed in a dark grey suit and no tie, the button at his throat was undone.
He spoke for an hour about the merger of disputes and cases where it had benefited the original plaintiffs and not once did his eyes stray towards the corner of the class where you sat. It was as if he was deliberately avoiding that very portion of the classroom. He wasn’t genial today. A good teacher, just like he always had been, but absolutely formal. When the class ended, he retrieved the attendance sheet from a kid in the first row and exited the class.
“Well, that was quite intense,” whooshed Meredith. “Hadn’t pegged him for the serious sort.”
Blonde hair giggled at the double entendre, and you almost gagged.
“He’s actually quite good,” Madison murmured, uncharacteristically serious. “He knows what he is talking about.”
Absentmindedly, you nodded. Not that you had paid much attention to the lecture, what with your heart struck in your throat.
The classes that followed weren’t as eventful as the morning and you were more than grateful about it. The other professors all seemed so knowledgeable and expert. You had enough on your mind by the time you left the university, your plate already full of assignments.
When you got home, Meg was sprawled on one of the two sofas that came with the house and were perched in the living room.
“Hey,” you said tentatively.
Meg raised an eyebrow, clearly surprised that you were initiating a conversation after a whole week of thoroughly avoiding her.
“Hey,” she said.
You placed your bad and laptop on the side table at the entrance and went to sit on the empty sofa. “I’m sorry about not greeting you earlier… I was going through some stuff.”
“Clearly,” she snorted.
The hurt must have shown in your eyes, because she straightened up into a sitting position.. “I’m not offended,” she said. “Locking myself in my room and avoiding human contact like it’s the fucking plague is my monthly PMS schedule. I’m not mad or anything.”
“Oh, alright,” you breathed out.
Meg looked amused. “Your face is like an open book,” she said. “If you keep that up, you’re going to be a terrible lawyer.”
You didn’t fight her on it. It was a problem… it always had been. Over the years mostly it had been a blank and your boss had commented on your excellent poker face… but clearly even the dumb expressive face was back with all the feelings.
“I don’t know what you’re studying,” you changed the topic.
“MS, Applied physics.”
“Damn. That sounds hard.”
Meg chuckled. “You really think that, don’t you? You look terrified.”
You rearranged your expression into what was just polite interest. Enough with Meg’s expert face reading class.
“You wanna grab dinner?” Meg asked.
“Sure,” you said. “What’re we doing?”
“I made some stir fry. I didn’t know if you’d be up for dinner, though.”
You felt terrible about skipping the meals and in turn her company over the past week.
“No worries,” she said, getting up. “I’ll just toss some pasta and we’re good to go.”
“Hey, Meg?” You asked, “I see you’ve stocked up the pantry. It’s incredibly kind of you. I might drive to the supermarket tomorrow after classes, why don’t you let me know if there’s anything you want.”
She looked at you with some surprise and a hint of actual liking. “Sure. We can make a list over food.”
“Great,” you smiled.
The rest of the week passed without any more surprises, and you took your time to settle in… getting to know Stanford- both, the University and the town. You attended all lectures regularly and gave your hundred percent effort to every assignment.
In classes, you listened with utmost concentration… all except one. Civil Procedure wasn’t a lecture, it was slow seething torture. Watching Sam talk on the podium, interacting with students simply made it hard to breathe. The walls of the lecture room converged in on you while you gasped for air. On Sam’s part, he ignored you completely. It was as if you didn’t exist at all. Over the course of the week, his stiff, formal stance loosened and you could see more and more of the guy who had introduced himself on the first day. You didn’t know what you had been expecting from him? That one day he would suddenly look at you with hatred and throw you out of the class? That he’d lose his mind and yell at you? Ask you the questions that you didn’t want to answer?
But even for all that, he’d have to acknowledge your presence. Look at you. Somehow the ignoring and pretending that you didn’t exist was so, so much worse. It was killing you. Every second of the class, you fought your tears. However, you did not miss a single class.
Apart from those two hours everyday, you were doing well, all things considered. On Thursday, you packed more food than just your lunch, and after classes, walked to the Green Library. It was just as breathtaking as it had been on the first day. You set out to find that one table that felt right. After a quarter of an hour of testing and teasing, you finally found a desk that looked oh so inviting. It wasn’t the one below the tall, arching windows, but rather a small desk niched between the bookshelves. It was perfect.
You unloaded your bag, and set to work with the assignments that had been set for the class by Professor Mills. You personally thought Jody Mills was a total badass. She took up cases that others were too scared to touch. Her assignments didn’t require you to reference too many books, so you could make yourself comfortable in the chair. Your mind wandered as the time passed. There were a lot of things to be thought through. For starters, if you had to afford living here, you needed a job. Your savings would last a couple of months at most.  The expense of moving across the country then having to pay for the lease of the apartment had taken a massive toll on your bank account. By the time holiday season began, you’d be as broke as the china in your grandma’s old cabinet.
Earlier, you had put in an application at the Student’s employment centre for oncampus jobs. You weren’t hopeful, given the number of applications they received, but you sure meant to check in on them next week in hopes that something suitable might have come up.
It was past 8 in the evening when you finally wrapped your stuff up, somewhat satisfied with how your assignment had turned out. You lowkey congratulated yourself on finishing it a week before the deadline as you made your way back home, crashing the minute you found your bed.
********************
18th July 2008
“Y/N! There’s someone here to see you!” Jo hollered from somewhere in the living room.
Thankfully the door to the room you were sharing with Jo was open.
“Coming!” You yelled back, wondering who could it possibly be. Maybe it was the postman with your grandma’s letter. She was a weird old lady who still loved writing handwritten letters. Gramps had been to the war and their love story had blossomed over letters sent across borders. Even though gramps had passed away many years ago, she still got that rosy look on her face whenever she talked of him. You wanted a love story like hers. Was it too much to ask for?
You made your way down the steps two at a time, excited for the letter. Maybe she had sent cookies along with it. Oh, how you loved her.
On the bottom step, you stopped. Sam Winchester was standing in the hallway, one hand balancing a lot of books, the other scratching the back of his neck, looking adorable in old jeans and an open button up over his t-shirt.
“Hey!” He said.
You were wearing a loose shirt without a bra over a pair of boy shorts, with hair falling over your shoulders. Needless to say, you were mortified.
“Give me two minutes,” you muttered and rushed back upstairs.
As you were pulling on a pair of leggings, it occurred to you how dumb the interaction had been. He was here to see you and neither had you invited him in nor asked him why he was here.
To add to your embarrassment, when you returned downstairs, he was still standing at the bottom of the stairs five minutes later, exactly where you had left him.
“Why’re you still standing here? Please come in!” You urged, scandalised that you had kept a guest waiting like that. Gran would have tutted so hard had she been here.
Sam followed you into the living room. Jo was lounging on the smaller sofa chain and you glared at her. She could have easily invited him in when she opened the door.
But no! How else would Y/N suffer in life?
Jo gave you the evil grin and waved to Sam.
“Would you like something to drink?” You asked, not meeting his eyes.
“I’ll have coffee!” Jo ordered and you threw her the stink eye again.
You gave Sam a chagrined look. “I’ll put the pot on the stove for her anyway. Do you want coffee?”
He looked like he was trying very hard to smile. “Black please. With half a spoon of sugar.”
You tried to calm your nerves as the pot boiled. Being a nervous wreck wasn’t going to help your case.
When you brought the two mugs of coffee outside, Sam was reading one of the books he had bought along and Jo was nowhere to be seen.
“Where’s Jo?” You asked, carefully placing the steaming mug before him on the table.
Sam shrugged. “She said she suddenly felt sleepy. And that you should drink her coffee because you both like it the same way.”
Oh, that sly girl.
“So, what brings you here?” You asked, taking a seat next to him on the sofa.
Sam smiled shyly. “You said you could use a second pair of eyes for the application.”
He had come all the way from wherever he stayed just to help you with the applications?
“Really?”
“Sure.” He tilted his head, the bangs on his forehead sliding to one side. He just had such beautiful hazel eyes. You have to avert your gaze so you wouldn’t just blatantly stare at him.
You excused yourself a second time and pulled out all your application stuff. Forms, copies of essays, documents and everything. It would be absolutely stupid to not make the most of this opportunity.
Sam took his time with all of it, going through each paper carefully and you counted your breaths to keep away the anxiety. At least he wasn’t laughing at how ridiculous your applications were. That was something. When he was done, he slowly put the papers down and looked up at you.
“Where else have you applied?” He asked.
You told him.
“You didn’t think of applying to any major universities?”
You shook your head. “I didn’t think I had a chance… and I don’t even think I was cut out for those.”
Sam reached out to place his hand on top of yours. A tingling sensation went up your spine. “Y/N! This looks great. Your essays are top notch. You should apply to Ivy Leagues.”
“I’ve already missed deadlines for them… and there are some good universities on my list as well.”
“But you deserve better!” He insisted.
You shrugged. “I don’t have that sort of money, and before you say scholarships, I don’t have those types of recommendations either. I come from a small town. People who are born there, spend their whole lives in the same house. They are happy with what they have.”
“Are you happy with what you have?” He asked, the light from the setting sun hitting his face, illuminating those eyes so they looked like burning topaz.
“I’m happy,” you said, looking at your lap where his hand rested on yours. He seemed to have forgotten about it. “But I know I can do better… for myself and my Gran.”
You made the mistake of looking up then… into his eyes, and they were closer than you had expected them to be. As if, he had no control over it, his hand reached out to touch your hair, the fingertips caressing your cheek on their way there. Slowly, but surely, he drew your face towards his… and you went, willingly. His lips had barely grazed yours when there was a loud noise in the hallway.
You sprang apart.
“Y/N!” It was Jo.
Ordinarily, you’d have flicked your tongue at her or something for interrupting like that. Afterall, she was the one who kept egging on you to get lucky, and the one time you had… that too with Sam frigging Winchester, she had to come barging into the room. Uhgg… Jo was going to get it.
But her face was completely white, and her hand, which was holding the phone, was shaking.
“Y/N,” she whispered again. Your neighbour called. It's your grandma… she passed away last night.
********************
You woke up in a cold sweat to the sound of the blaring alarm.
Gran!
The worry felt so fresh, you had to remind yourself that it had been seven years since she had passed away. Grief was peculiar like that… even after years and years of feeling it, some days it just felt fresh and new. Sad memories opened up the box of more memories, not all of them sad. The thought of gran was always accompanied by a warm feeling and memory of sunlit kitchen, and freshly baked bread.
This… dream or whatever it was had triggered more than just that… you could almost feel the whisper of Sam’s lips on yours. You had suppressed it so long that the feeling was almost forgotten now and how it ached knowing that you would never feel it again. The raw, desperate part of you tried to cling on to that feeling, the memory of his touch. It was three in the night, no one could blame you for wanting this comfort of your own memories. As painful as they were when you were completely in your senses, in this darkness, they were all yours to do what you pleased with them. However, like a dream, the memories kept evading your grasp. The more you tried to hold on it, the further away it slipped. Sleep eluded you completely after that.
Needless to say, you were tired and sleepy and irritated by the time the last lecture for the week commenced. You hadn’t memorised the lecture schedule yet…. you only knew when the Civil Procedure class was. First lecture on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday and the last lecture of Thursday and Friday. Lacey had mentioned something about Sam having to travel to the City for work on the first three days.
Sam was dressed more informally today. He was without a coat and glasses, hair just a little out of order… less sleek.
“Oooohhh looks like the professor had a rough night!” Lacey giggled.
“You don’t know that,” Madison shushed. “Maybe he’s single.”
“Oh, c’mon!” Lacey rolled her eyes. “He lives in the faculty residence on Alverado row. And his house is definitely a family house, not a bachelors pad… So that means he at least has a woman.”
You caught your breath. Alverado row was right behind your Santa Ynes street, where you lived. Literally right behind, less than a block away. You knew a majority senior faculty staff resided there, but it had never crossed your mind...
“I don’t see no ring,” snarked Rebecca, Madison's blonde friend, who was sitting a row ahead of you to the left.
You quickly looked. She was right… there was no ring. Your heart skipped a beat.
“Doesn’t have to be a wife,” Lacey made a face. “Could be just a girlfriend.”
“Whatever,” Rebecca rolled her eyes. “Doesn’t mean we can’t try our luck.”
It stung, listening to them talk about it stung more than you wanted to admit even to yourself.
“Before we start today's lesson, I have a question for you,” Sam said, calling everyone’s attention and the gossip promptly stopped.
“Basic Property damage,” he said. “The plaintiff has proved beyond a shadow of doubt that the defendant is liable. The only issue of debate which remains is the amount of damages to be recovered. Before the last hearing, new evidence comes to light about a completely unrelated matter where the plaintiff has unintentionally harmed the defendant. If you were playing the part of the DA, what would be your obvious course of action.”
‘Settlement’ you muttered to yourself, just loud enough for the few people around you to hear.
“Anyone?” Sam asked, and on cue, Rebecca raised her hand.
“Settlement!” She called out.
“That’s correct,” Sam said, “It should occur to you faster than lightning to draw out a settlement. Good job there. That was quick.”
Next to her, Madison was looking at her friend incredulously. Then she turned around and gave you a sorry look. The boy sitting on her opposite side, the blond one, who had snickered at you on the first day also raised an eyebrow.
You didn’t care one way or another if Rebecca got the praise for your answer. You were simply relieved that you got that answer right… and that you were able to concentrate in the class better than you had been able to uptil now.
Perhaps that was the reason that it caught your attention, the quickest flick of Sam’s chin in your direction, before he stiffly averted his gaze. When the class ended, few students rushed to Sam’s desk, while you made to leave the room.
“Hey!”
You turned to see the blond dude standing right next to you.
“Y/N, isn’t it?” He asked.
You nodded.
“Brad,” he offered his hand. “Brad Rowan.”
“Nice to meet you.” you murmured, shaking his hand whilst glancing at the door.
“So, we have a party tomorrow evening,” he said, grinning with too much confidence. “Down at the western dorms. Everyone cool is coming. You should, too.”
“Thank you,” you said politely. “But I already have plans for the weekend.”
“Better than spending time with me?” He winked, stepping ever so slightly in front of you.
You were firm this time. “Yes.”
“Oh, let her be, Brad.” It was Madison, who had come sauntering down the aisle. “If she says she’s busy, she probably is. We’ll miss you, Y/N!”
You threw her a grateful look… Madison didn’t seem to catch it.
You said your goodbyes to her and Brad and left the room quickly.
Maybe it was your imagination, but out of the corner of your eye, you saw Sam’s gaze flicker towards you… if only for one moment.

Arranged: Chapter 3
Modern AU. Set in 2018. Where Claire and Jamie are arranged to be married.
CH: 1 - 2
AO3
A/N: Sorry it took a while to write this. The past month just has been incredibly weird and strange. But I am happy this is up now, I had a wee writers block on how to make them go forward but I think I found the way. So excited to write what's next. Hope you like this chapter and it's always good to see and hear your comments and suggestions <3
CHAPTER 3: The First Afternoon
It was the morning after the dinner, Claire was on the bus heading to uni to start another day. Usually, she’d spent the 10-minute ride browsing through class notes but today, she found herself staring out the window and watching the city scene go by. Musing with recent events, Claire can’t help but think about Jamie.
Jamie Fraser wasn’t a stranger in her life. On the contrary, she cannot remember her life without him.
Looking back, she remembered their days, growing up in their family dinners. Jamie was two years ahead of her, he was basically in her life even before she knew it and they practically grew up together.
Sure, Jenny and Willie were also there in that scenario as well but with the recent arrangement, she focused on the times she was only with him. Before any of this, she only thought of him as a really close family friend but didn’t think they were really that close. But the more she thought about them, the more wrong she found herself.
She remembered playing in the green fields of their backyard, stealing toys from each other or playing tag; carpooling to and from elementary school for some years, heading straight to either of their house until a parent can come and pick them up; watching the same cartoons, singing the theme song together once it was on; how they would take afternoon naps after watching said show and be woken up exactly at 4PM for some afternoon snacks; how all of them - her, Jenny, Jamie and Willie -  would all play house or castle rescue, and how her and Jamie were always deemed the “king and queen” combo or the “prince and damsel” duo, where in the end, he would always save her; In some days, they would even have wedding scenarios played out as part of the story of happily ever after. It was all very innocent and fun, and at the time, no one thought any malice into it. It was just pure childhood fun.
Everything sort of changed when they entered high school. Jamie and Claire went to exclusive boys and girls catholic schools and naturally, they had their own circle and friends and their interactions were limited to their family dinners. Heading off to college, Claire took a pre-med course and Jamie took-up a pre-law course and now, she’s in medical school while he’s busy running the family’s publishing house business. Although they both stayed in Edinburgh, their paths never crossed as often as one would think.
However, despite growing up and somehow, maybe, growing apart, when they do see each other, they would talk and interact as they normally do – the long-time friends they are – and update each other on the status of their lives. All very civil, normal and nothing more.
What’s even more puzzling to Claire, now, is in these times and nobody ever teased them about the “what ifs” of them ending up together. Nobody ever spoke to them in that way, nobody gave an inkling about this merger ever happening. Nobody had a rumored crush on anyone. Nobody gave them any thought and no one gave her any indication to. As far as she knew, Jamie Fraser was and will always be just a long-time family friend in her life.
The shock of the engagement was wearing off but Claire was determined to get to the bottom of this. Jamie was right – their parents aren’t impulsive enough to set this up lightly. There is a deep, real reason for it and she will know it and put a stop to it.
-
“Darling, there you are!” Frank called as she stepped out of the car, breaking her thoughts of Jamie.
Frank – her very new and current suitor. They’ve been seeing each other for over a month and Claire was totally smitten with the professor right from the moment they met at the university library when he helped her carry her loads of medical books from the shelf to the table.
He make a joke – she can’t remember it anymore – but it made her laugh in what was a stressful exam week and she was charmed by his aristocratic elegance and wit. They got to talking after that and she found out he was a history professor and almost a decade older than her (though she thought he didn’t look like it).
She hadn’t told her parents about him because of what they might think of her dating a much older man and how it can affect their position in the university. She was a student (she can argue that she’s in medical school and not some undergraduate bimbo) and he was a teacher – that scenario doesn’t look good in any way, shape or form. Also, she wasn’t entirely certain of him yet -  so she’s taking her time to get to know him a little bit more before she allows him more into her life.
As they met in the middle of the courtyard, Frank noticed her somber aura. “What is it, Claire?” he asked, concerned.
“Oh, it’s nothing. Just got up in the wrong side of the bed” she lied. He took it at face value and thought nothing more. Clearly, he doesn’t know her yet as he hadn’t caught up with the jig.
“Okay!” He said, really not noticing it. “I gotta run to class. I’ll see you in the afternoon?”
“Yes – No! I forgot I have a group meeting later and don’t know how long would that be. Uhm…maybe just call me later and see where I’m at?” She said. Frank just nodded and went on his way.
-
It was technically a groupmeeting – they were two people, that counts. She was going to see Jamie in a nearby coffee shop and start this ridiculous quest. The day went by with Claire mostly working on autopilot student mode. Her mind ran scenarios on where they should start to investigate, people they can ask favor for to look into their family company. They should also fix their schedules and think about how this will affect their studies. This investigation was going to take over their lives and both seem to be in agreement with it – Claire, simply, wants it to be over.
He was already seated when she arrived, her favorite beverage, hot and waiting, on the table. “Sorry, I’m late. The bus was late and there was so many people waiting in line…” Claire explained herself. “It’s no mind, Claire.” Jamie stopped her before she went on a long narrative. She just smiled and took her seat across from him.
“Oolong Tea” Jamie pointed to the cup. “I hope ye dinna mind me orderin’ for ye. I canna choose which pastry ye’d like today though, so I’ll let ye choose that one.”
“It’s fine. That’s what I was going to drink anyway and I’ll order the bread later.” Claire thought about how Jamie knew her drink but with their long history, she thought she shouldn’t be shocked about it. After all, she knew his drink even though the lid of the coffee cup hid its contents – it was black, three sugars.
“Where do we begin?” she asked, hoping it’ll shift her thought from their apparent familiarity.
“Well, what did yer parents say to ye again?”
“That this was a business merger of some sort, which honestly, doesn’t make sense. Your business seems to be fine, ours is as well. Do you have any idea about the financial status of your company?”
Jamie shrugged. He already knows falling numbersis not the problem but this was the ruse. As much joy it was to spend with her, it equally pained him for it to be this way. “I guess we can start there?” He suggested. “Let me call Rupert and Angus Mackenzie from Finance, I’m sure they can discreetly hand me the finances since…2010? I’ll just go that far back just in case.” Real reason was to accumulate as much paperwork to get lost themselves in.
Since the Frasers and Beauchamps are both stakeholders in each other’s company, they both had access to the numbers for both companies. Acquiring the data was not that hard.
“Hi, Rupert! I’m okay, just settling back” Jamie said as he called Rupert. “Rupert, I was wondering if you could send me the year-end numbers of our company and the Beauchamps dating back in 2010? Yes, - No, I would just like to study the trends…”
“No need to explain. I got you, Jamie! I’ll send it in an hour.” Rupert answered back with a knowing laugh, interrupting Jamie’s ramble of an explanation. His parents must’ve set this up too. Jamie sighed hopelessly, thanked Rupert and ended the call.
“Files will be sent in an hour” Jamie said.
“I guess we got time to kill. Would you mind if I did a bit of studying? We’re already here and we gotta wait.” Claire asked.
“No, no, go ahead. I was just going to ask the same thing.” He replied with a smile as he started pulling out his stuff from his bag.
They were occupying in a four-seater table, the space just enough for each of them to claim a side. Claire put out her laptop, two medical books, a notebook and lots of pencils and ballpens. Jamie, also, pulled out his laptop, three novels, a notebook and lots of highlighters. Both silently went on their respective study sessions.
A little over a half hour in, Jamie disrupted Claire’s thought with a question. “Claire, do you need a refill?”
She looked up, a little disoriented. “Hm, what? Oh, yes, please, thank you.”
Jamie took her cup and went to bar to fill her tea with a fresh pour of hot water. He refilled his coffee too. As he set down her cup, Claire inadvertently let out a question. “How did you know I refill?” She was curious as to how much Jamie really knew her. She saw him turn a little shy in her question as he placed a hand on the back of his neck.
“Well, ye’ve been drinking Oolong tea since we were wee bairns and ye always made sure that the tea bag is always well-used and that meant two, maybe three, uses until it lost its flavor for ye. Also, you’re doing that eye-scrunch thing when ye’re thinking so hard of a thing ye canna or tryna figure out. Thought it a good time to distract ye.”
“Well, it was. Thank you” Claire said monotonously as she took a sip of her tea. “I see you’re still coloring your books with highlighters.” She said, pointing at his many colors of markers on his table.
“And I see ye’re still placing wee snacks on each paragraph in yer book.” Jamie retorted back and they shared a small laugh.
“It’s been a while since we studied together but it seems like some things never change”
“Aye, some things never do, Sassenach” Jamie said tenderly, looking straight into Claire’s eyes.
“Hey, you haven’t called me that in forever!” Claire exclaimed excitedly. “What does that mean again?”
“Och, nothing. It just means Englishman, or in yer case, Englishwoman. An outlander, not from Scotland”
“Right, right! That’s the only name you’d call me growing up, I almost forgot my own!”
“Really?” Jamie never knew the name meant possibly more than Claire let on and he was curious to know the story behind it. However, a ding on Jamie’s computer alerted them back to the task at hand.
“Ach, the email is here” Jamie informed Claire and she quickly got up, went over to his side, pulled out a chair and sat beside him. She peered so close at his computer their cheeks were almost side to side.
“Open it, open it!” Claire said, waving a hand to Jamie to hurry up.
“Patience!” he chuckled as the file filled the screen.
Both simultaneously groaned when the file they got was filled with so much number, just pure numbers, neither of them can make it out. Rupert must’ve made it so complicated, they’ll never figure anything out.
“Seriously, Rupert!” Claire rolled her eyes, annoyed.
“I’ll call him –“
“No. He might get suspicious if we ask so much and so frequently. We, erm, we…can figure this out”
“How about we call it for the day? We got the file, we can look at it tomorrow instead.” Jamie said, looking to prolong the evidence. If they start on this now, Claire will never stop for the rest of the afternoon and probably evening. “I got an exam I have to study for anyway. Unless, you want to have a go at it?”
Claire shook her head. She’s got to study too. “No, you’re right. I have to study too.” She sighed. “We have to talk about a schedule where this research is not going to interfere with our studies – which is our top priority”
Jamie just nodded. “How about we meet here every after class and maybe spend 2-3 hours looking at this, then we go back to our studies? Sounds like enough time to balance our day?”
They reached an agreement and let the investigation stop for the day. Claire reached for her stuff to pack but when she noticed Jamie didn’t move and just continued to go back to highlighting his pages. “Aren’t you going home or somewhere else to study?”
“Och, I’m already here and the ambiance is good, thought I’d stay until the evening.” Jamie replied with a sheepish smile. Claire looked around and the atmosphere was good. The smell of the coffee was inviting, the people were quiet, and a change of scene was probably what she needed to focus. It wasn’t bad either that she’s with Jamie, they were friends after all. With that, she put her stuff back on the table and decided to stay as well. Jamie stayed silent and they went on their own business but she saw the small tug in his lips and he smiled.
-
A loud ringing of the cellphone brought them out of their space. It was Claire’s phone and Claire’s mother calling.
“Hello, yeah – I’m sorry. I’m on my way home. No, just got lost in studying” Claire rapidly explained as Jamie could hear her mother’s rapid line of questioning. “Yep, I’ll be there in 15 minutes. Love you, bye”
“Ye’ll be there in 5” Jamie said. “I’ll take ye home”. It was already 8:00PM and they were going to miss dinner.
“What? No, Jamie. It’s fine. The bus by this time are probably not that full.” They were quickly packing their stuff while, also, quickly negotiating their travel plans.
“I have a car and we live in the same neighborhood. Ye canna argue with that logic, Claire.”
Claire grumbled but relented. It was certainly easier and convenient and again, Jamie was no stranger. On some unsurprisingly absurd level, she trusts him completely. She reasons it’s probably from the years they’ve known each other. Nonetheless, if Jamie acts inappropriately, she’ll just tell him to their mothers.
The drive home was quick and Jamie, being the true gentleman he was, insisted that he open Claire’s passenger door and walk her right in front of her doorstep. She was about to protest but his actions were quicker and for the fourth time that day, she let him…erm…look out for her.
“Thank you for a lovely afternoon. For the tea, the records, the study time, and the ride home” she said as she turned around to bade him goodbye. They were standing in a respectable distance from one another, just as friends do. “Would you like to stay for dinner? It’s the least I can offer for the tea.”
“Ah, no. My family is waiting on me too. I’ll have my hide if mam doesna see me on the table”
“Well, then, goodnight, Jamie.”
“Goodnight, Sassenach. I’ll see you tomorrow?”
“I’ll see you tomorrow.”

Year of Review - Writing 2017
I was tagged by the lovely and doubly talented (awesome fics and awesome art, and so much of it, how do you do it?) @timesorceror (and it only took me three weeks to finally get to it…sorry)
Total number of completed stories:
20
Total word count:
Also counting wips that haven’t been posted yet, 207482
Fandoms written in:
Dragon Age
Looking back, did you expect to write more fic than you thought you would this year, less, or about what you’d expected?:
I wrote more one shots than I thought I would and less chapters for my wips than planned. All in all, I’d say less than I hoped for but about as much as I expected.
What’s your own favorite story of the year?:
I have several stories that are my favourites for different reasons, and it also changes depending on what mood I’m in. To narrow it down a little, I think Why are you looking at me like that and Dear Justice might be my absolute favourites. Maybe. I feel the urge to name at least five more coming up, so let’s move on to the next one quickly.
Did you take any writing risks this year?:
Not really. I posted several fics without much (or any) editing/proofing/rewriting (which I normally tend to do quite a lot of) because I wanted to meet a deadline; that was a first for me. Dates and cakes was probably the biggest risk for me in that regard. It has several chapters, all of which were outlined, written, edited and posted in less than 24 hours as I wanted to finish it in time for a special occasion, and while I would have loved to add one or two more chapters, I’m very happy with how it turned out.
Do you have any fanfic or profit goals for the new year?:
I have a couple of prompts in my inbox that I still need to finish, as well as a few short gift fics and my Christmas fic (yes, it’s gonna be super late but you will read it anyway…like…pleaaase?). When those are done, I want to finish my wips on ao3 (Truce or date, the Stepping stones series and (W)hole lotta love and then finally get back to working on a few half-finished wips that have been lying around for almost two years now (in particular my mermaid au fenders, a justice-centric drunk sex fenders, a fenhawke longfic, and a one shot detailing what happened in the tent between chapters one and two in Ten times you kissed me). But most importantly, I want to take a few weeks to take a break from writing and finally read all the awesome fics on my ever growing “to read” list. I’ve been so focused on writing this year, I think I need to step back for a while.
Best story of the year?:
I have honestly no idea how to answer this. There are so many different aspect you could judge them on, and you’d probably get different “winners” depending on which you pick. But well, I have to pick one so… given the amount of thought, planning and structuring that went into it and the fact that I feel it brings across the points I was trying to make/the feelings I was trying to evoke, I guess Ten times you kissed me is the most likely candidate.
Most popular story of the year?:
I wasn’t sure which criteria to base this one, but it turns out Ten times you kissed me is the most popular one regardless of whether you look at kudos, comments, hits or bookmarks. It’s a chaptered story that was posted over the course of several weeks, so it had more time to gather readers than one shots, of which Oh let me how at the moon in your pants is the most popular one by far (also for all of the above). (Technically, Truce or Date is still number one in all categories, but while I did post several chapters this year, I’m pretty sure most of the feedback is from 2016.)
Story of mine most under-appreciated by the universe, in my opinion:
Fics for pairings I don’t usually write tend to get very little response. Why are you looking at me like that, Until we are free (both Kanders) and Things we lost (Fenhawke) in particular are some of my personal favourites but hardly got any readers at all.
Most fun story to write:
There are several candidates for this one:                                                              Superstition – I just wanted to have fun with Anders talking his way out of trouble, and wrote the whole thing in under an hour. One of the most relaxed and enjoyable times I ever had writing                                                                Mounds of marble – I got to give Anders a statue and then have him (and Hawke and Fenris) fuck said statue…need I say more?                                                 Oh let me howl at the moon in your pants - Again, the goal was to simply have fun. I’d been sick for several days, and just wanted write something silly (and sexy)…So when I saw a fun prompt, I wrote a lot of stuff about mage ass…           What he deserves was a different kind of fun. Less puns and silly jokes, but writing handers with a supportive Hawke after the Chantry Boom was just really satisfying.
Story with the single sexiest moment:
I think my personal favourite is (W)hole lotta love (which is still ongoing). And the throne room scene in Truce or date was also pretty popular… If we’re talking completed stories, probably Heatwave.
Most sweet story:
There’s fluff in most of them, but And Pounce makes three probably wins this category as it is nothing but high fructose newlyweds fluff. That said, Dates and cakes is also very sweet (also literally, because…well, cakes. Lots of cakes.)
“Holy crap, that’s wrong, even for you!” story:
The statue fucking in Mounds of marble is probably the closest thing to weird stuff I’ve written posted this year, so not much to offer here I’m afraid.
Story that shifted my own perceptions of the characters:
There are two stories that are more Justice-centric than most of what I’ve written so far, with a more in-depth look at/a slightly different take on Anders’ and Justice’s merger. Dear Justice focuses on the friendship between Fenris and Justice in a pre-fenders setting, which I’d never explored before but really enjoyed. Fading into you has Fenris and Justice interacting physically (yes, they’re banging), which I’d never really given much thought to before either.
Most unintentionally telling story:
I guess all of them are telling in some way or other, but so far, I’ve remained blissfully ignorant as to how (I mean, aside from the obvious stuff). I guess Setting sail would be the most likely candidate, as it’s by far the most personal one.
Hardest story to write:
Both my fenhawke stories Reckoning and Things we lost took disproportionally long to finish considering they are relatively short pieces. The core parts were jotted down pretty quickly, but it took forever to tweak the details and hit the tone I was aiming for. And while coming up with the chapter titles and general outline for I spy…ruffled feathers and unlaced leathers was some of the most fun I ever had, putting the whole thing together afterwards ended up being an extremely slow and exhausting process.
Biggest disappointment:
Not finishing Truce or date. I’d planned to use December to finally finish first drafts of the remaining chapters (all of which are already half-written and have been lying around for months), so I’d be able to get back to a regular weekly editing/posting rhythm in January. But then things happened and I didn’t have time, so now I’m going to have to devote February to this project.
Biggest surprise:
There were a couple of surprises, but I think the biggest one was how well Dear Justice was received. It was posted in early December and after just three weeks, it was already my third most kudosed fic of the year. It also received quite a few lovely comments. It was one of the stories that were written in only a day and didn’t really get any editing/rewriting, and I wasn’t sure anyone would be interested in this approach to Fenders at all, so that was a really lovely surprise.

I think I'm going to merge two of my AUs into one: "Everyone Has a Story" and "Winter Wolves.
My most popular series is Winter Wolves. But, believe or not, that wasn't originally the AU I prioritized the most. No, my most valued AU was Everyone Has a Story - a rewrite of the show as I wish it'd gone, with a lot more attention to character development and less fridging.
The thing is, a lot of the Teen Wolf worldbuilding of Winter Wolves is just stuff I originally thought up of for Everyone Has a Story, adapted to a world with the MCU in it. I actually still have twice as many notes for Everyone Has a Story than I do Winter Wolves! I did a tremendous amount of supernatural worldbuilding for the Everyone Has a Story series, but at the rate I'm going, it'll be literal decades before I get to use them in EHAS, and meanwhile, I keep using those ideas for Winter Wolves.
I detail some of the reasoning for it under the cut, but tl;dr version is that the plots would combine really well, and it would give a lot of story to some characters in Winter Wolves that I didn't originally have as much planned for. Granted, a lot of EHAS story would get lost when combined with WW, but honestly, that AU wasn't that popular, anyway, so I wouldn't call it a huge loss.
Plot(s)
The general plots of Everyone Has a Story and Winter Wolves are the same - in that neither of them were contingent on a dramatic change of the plot of Teen Wolf. For both of them, I was going to follow the plot of Teen Wolf while changing it for the purposes of that AU (though both would also diverge further away from canon as time went on).
And ironically, while I'd originally planned for them to both go completely off the canon rails by Seasons 5 and 6 (since most of this was getting planned back during and after Season 4). But Season 6B has actually ended up playing right into the themes I have planned for both those series. *shrugs* Go figure.
Honestly, a lot of my "season"/Teen Wolf plot rewrites for Winter Wolves are watered down versions of what I'd planned for Everyone Has a Story (mostly watered down for breadth/space in the story, rather than depth/complexity).
I'm thinking of sort of abruptly ending the Everyone Has a Story "series' where it is, and instead re-establishing "Everyone Has a Story" as a fic/sub-series within Winter Wolves. The "plot' of Everyone Has a Story would get cut out, focusing primarily - almost exclusively - on character development. The "actual" plot would be Talking Cure, and Everyone Has a Story would be wrapped around that.
I think it says something that it would take very little retconning and editing of Everyone Has a Story, as it currently is, to make it "compliant" with Winter Wolves.
I feel like this would also be easier on readers. Partially because if I kept them as two separate stories, then reading them would get repetitive. But also because, weaving them into one story would make updating them easier.
Character Development
This would involve a lot of greatly expanded and nuanced expansions of characters who I didn't have much planned for in Winter Wolves. Jackson and Danny would take a much more prominent role, especially. Danny's story from EHAS involved, among other things, a sexual assault subplot that was gonna go to some pretty dark places, which could either match up perfectly with the hints of a Rising Tide background for his WW story, or completely work against it. Not sure, yet.
Though this merger would probably mean cutting out a pretty funny abortion subplot. I mean, hopefully I'll find a way to work it into the merger, but I'm not exactly counting on it, either...
The downside is that that I'm probably going to lose Cora. She was barely in EHAS, and not in WW at all. Since I'm keeping Erica alive, I was going to 'keep' her dead/not miraculously bring her back to life for just a few episodes and then pretend it never happened. *side-eyes Teen Wolf* But her plot from EHAS was already incongruent with the story as it was (I wasn't too happy with it), and 'keeping' her dead works out a lot better for Derek's story and the worldbuilding in general. Kinda sorry, but I don't want to include a character just for the sake of it when I don't have much of a story planned for her.
The other confounding factor will be the twins, especially Aiden. I guess I'll wait and see what happens to Ethan in 6B to be sure, but Aiden's EHAS story and WW story don't mesh together very well, or even outright contradict each other, even though they ironically end the same way. Ethan's EHAS story will either fall on one extreme of really not working well with the Winter Wolves universe, or will work really well with it.
The downside is that some characters' stories would be pretty fundamentally incompatible. In particular, Everyone Has a Story was originally built around Scott, Stiles, and Allison as a "core" of the AU, so their stories would get subsumed to Winter Wolves, and most of my EHAS plans for them would be lost.
Gender and Sexuality
I guess I also have mixed feelings about the taking the greater role of gender and sexuality from EHAS and introducing it to Winter Wolves. But overall, I think it would be a good move. All too often, trans characters and queer characters (outside of gay white males/queer fetishization) tend to not be included in fanfic that much, or they appears predominantly in fanfic that is about someone being trans or non-binary or a asexual or whatever.
A big theme of EHAS is that, being teenagers, a lot of the characters are sometimes exploring their gender or sexuality - but at the same time, it always takes a backseat in the story, not because their identities aren't important, but because life-and-death supernatural shenanigans are the main focus. Trans and non-binary and queer characters can have stories that aren't about their identities just as much as straight/heternormative characters do in mainstream media and cis-slash/gay ones do in fandom.
I like the idea of furthering this with Winter Wolves - i.e. teenagers exploring gender and sexuality in the context of not just supernatural drama, but the politics and chaos of the MCU as well. I just don't want those stories to get too marginalized or underwritten, either. This will be a pretty tricky balance to maintain.
Jackson's is going to be the most confounding. His plot was heavily dependent on Season 3, and involved him coming to terms with his asexuality (and still working out a relationship with Lydia who had to come to terms with being aromantic, yet still having quite a libido). In Winter Wolves, though, he's not going to be around for Season 3. I hope I can work it into Season 4. I enjoyed this arc specifically because they were portrayed as highly sexual or romantic in the first two seasons. While not true for everyone, some aces and aros "overcompensat" for their lack of the attraction in their youth, so I wanted to explore these characters from that angle.
Kind of a mixed bag on a trans arc. The only real story I had planned for Cora, herself, was about her being trans. But as I mentioned, a big part of EHAS was that while exploration of sexualities and gender identities was a huge part of the characters' stories, it wasn't the center or entirety of their stories - but I didn't have much of an arc for Cora. I don't want to keep a character around just for the hell of it, or tokenize a trans characer. On the flip side, while I do have a story planned for Hayden, it's a little shallow - mostly just because I was waiting to see how her story would end (I hadn't known until 6B started that she wouldn't be in it), so I hadn't gotten around to it, yet. For a variety of reasons, her being trans would actually work pretty well with the story, and this way, I wouldn't just have a 'token trans character', and could have a pretty solid story about Hayden being a trans girl that isn't contingent on her being trans. (Not to mention that while Hayden's story isn't dependent on Liam, her having a trans arc would actually play well into Liam's arc.)
I've got mixed feelings on how I'm going to include Stiles' story. He's pretty firmly bisexual and that's never really a question for him. But in EHAS, a pretty dark consequence of the nogitsune so thoroughly mind-raping him is that Stiles basically loses his sense of bodily autonomy, which leads to some pretty unhealthy sexual practices and attitudes towards his own body. It fit well with the themes and structure of EHAS, but I'm not sure how well it would work in Winter Wolves, which is a lot more plot-oriented than EHAS, and in which Stiles' arc is a lot more specific to his mental state, rather than his 'relationship with his body' so to speak. Not sure how well I can keep both of these balanced, but I think I can work something out. The downside is that this subplot for Stiles in EHAS was also heavily dependent on Derek, whereas right around the time it's happening is right around when Derek leaves Beacon Hills for a bit in Winter Wolves. (Don't worry, he comes back, and a lot sooner than in canon!)
Gonna be interesting to try to work demisexual!Scott into Winter Wolves, though. His love life in Winter Wolves is, in style, kind of a mish-mash of Bucky's and Steve's comic-book love lives, so it'll be simultaneously very easy and very difficult to rework that around demisexuality.
For most of the other characters, though, my plans for them in EHAS should work out nicely with WW.
Politics
I guess one downside is I'll lose a specific element of worldbuilding with this merger - supernatural politics.
A huge element of the worldbuilding, and the "expansion" of the plot, from EHAS, involved some nuanced supernatural politics...especially a somewhat more realistic take. I've seen a lot of urban fantasy politics, including in Teen Wolf fanfics, that read an awful lot like high fantasy politics jam-packed into a contemporary environment. It's a bit like fitting a square peg into a round hole. I wanted to take on what supernatural politics would look like in the modern world.
But the MCU already has so much politics as it is, that while I could "start" the political storylines from EHAS in Winter Wolves, the reality is most of them would get subsumed pretty fast by the superhuman politics of Winter Wolves/the MCU.
That said, I'll definitely preserve one of those 'political' subplots: the Hunters. Specifically, when Allison changes the Code, she fucking changes the code. While the Argents aren't the only Hunting family, they are the most prominent and longest-lasting, and the leader of the Argent family is often an implicit leader of Hunters as a whole. But that doesn't mean they are the leader, and Allison still has a bit of an uphill battle in effecting real, systemic change. At the same time, Hunters aren't a monolith - even as a lot of people oppose the changes she's trying to make, many Hunters support it, and have been quietly shifting in that direction for a while, anyway. This merges quite nicely with what I have planned for Winter Wolves.
Similar deal with Scott. While not at all a leader like Allison is, being a True Alpha does give Scott some unique abilities even for an alpha, and does get him a lot of attention and a certain amount of wary respect among werewolves, and supernatural creatures in general. He does have to deal with that a lot, which I can carry over from EHAS to WW - though WW actually turns this up to 11, which means the actual, original EHAS story of him dealing with it will likely go out the window.
Stiles' political subplot also goes out the window, but mostly because magic takes a greatly reduced role in WW compared to EHAS. In WW, I'm taking a very scientific bent on the supernatural (as anyone who watches Thor or Agents of SHIELD has likely already started to suspect), whereas in EHAS is was still much closer to the 'fantasy' part of Urban Fantasy. On top of that, Stiles already has a superhero-related political arc in WW, one which is pretty incompatible with his supernatural/magic political arc from EHAS.

i was hoping that this au would give me idea for some of the actual characters, and like, its helped with Zeke and Lyndelle a little, but i cant use almost anything from Endlyn for Gwendolen. like, ok, she’s a rule stickler??? so she doesnt like Rhia because even though Rhia is a cop (and a good one) shes also a member of a gang and assumed a false identity to get away from one of Gwendolen’s friends? its really complex. there is no way in hell Gwen was the one who accepted Elliot’s suggestion that Rhia take his place. like Gwen’s just like.... what? she’s a criminal though? and it gets kind of complicated from there but eventually its likely the other elite 4 members (and perhaps even the guy who left) eventually go ‘just fucking let her do it, Gwen. we can find a replacement later’. except of course, they dont, because Rhia earns her position and has her identity legally align (some sort of complex merger of Seren’s files and Rhia’s to make it less funky. theres some adoption papers filed in order to make shit line up. some backdating. its really messy but its essentially a favour for her cooperating with the xerophyte/exordial investigation). and because she was essentially forced to join, thats not a knock against her. so it sorta fades away. Gwen’s not a huge fan still.
but that is all ive gathered. she’s a rules stickler. big law enforcement type, even though she isn’t actually a cop. but the League are a form of like, ~government~ of sorts, so she’s not a vigilante. v important. not a vigilante fan. which also wouldnt help with her opinion of Rhia, because if you get Split end (which would be the default unless you actually like. sorta work to help them sort their shit out), Rhia goes off and goes vigilante up until the end of the postgame story with Lyndelle and Felicity. so Gwen does noooooot like a Split Rhia. so in the hypothetical sequel, where important values carry over, a split Rhia will not have made any progress within the elite 4. a reconcile Rhia, who didn’t become a vigilante, she might have. im not saying a reconcile Rhia would suddenly be the champion or anything, but maybe she just moves up in order. though that does depend on like..... whether the elite 4 has an order or its like all the new games where you can pick it. idk!
i mean theres not a lot of impact Gwendolen can specifically have. she cooperates with the International Police, helps found the new Urica police force after Exordial collapses. she could /possibly/ restrict Rhia’s progression through that new force? but thats all pooooost post game, thats in between shit, it wouldnt have any actual effect on the game. as far as Gwen being weirdly controll-y? could be something. im not sure when Gwen would show up, is the issue. perhaps she shows up in William’s town (Geelong, rmb) or in uh, Henry’s (beeeeeendigo?). admonishes the shit out of William for ignoring his towns plight but doesn’t actually do something about it herself. gives you a smile but warns you not in interfere with this sort of stuff - the police and gym leaders should be handling it. which makes Two individuals telling you not to fight Xerophyte, but for different reasons. Gwen’s not telling you this because she cares about you as a person, she’s telling you because she doesn’t want you to become a criminal, because she dislike criminals. no vigilantism, please. i bet she shows up after the raid where you arrest Samson and she’s like ‘what the fuck did i say?’ and then Dante shows up and go ‘maam, please calm down. they were attempting to rescue a friends pokemon, and were reinforced by the Exordial Police Force. I’ve also been informed that the CEO of Exordial, my wife Felicity, has specifically endorsed this individual. This is no more an act of vigilantism as you yourself coming to police their behaviour. :)’ and Gwens just like -.- fine. Gwen doesn’t like you either. god, if she finds out you ended up locked up trying to track down Xerophyte in the east town, she’d kick your ass. or shed say ‘thats what you get for trying to be the hero’.
which is a similar sort of vibe to Rhia, except that Rhia wants to protect you. Both Gwen and Rhia see you being hurt through ‘vigilantism’ as an inevitablity. But while Rhia explicitly wants to protect you from it, even if that means she has to hurt you to make that point clear (its a little contradictory and in her defence she TOLD them not to hurt you), Gwen isn’t going to stop you and will actively punish you on top of that. so Gwen does not like you. Rhia probably does! She’ admires your pep. She pities you, mostly, for getting tangled in Elliot’s bullshit.
and both of them have to give up, on some level. Rhia has to accept that you can hold your own, and allows you to make the conscious choice to proceed up the tower to fight Felicity and Dante. Gwen has to accept that the police force has been corrupted, and sends you and Elliot to track down Dante, because clearly this shits gotten fucked and she has to actually step in. but she does specifically require that you go with Elliot and do what he says. because at LEAST Elliot is was an E4 member once (8 years ago) so theres /some/ semblance of authority, rather than a god damn vigilante child. wild.
theyre similar on some things but completely contradictory on others. Rhia doesn’t want you to trust Elliot at all. Gwen wants you to completely trust Elliot. wild.
