Release: July 2022, Playdate (May 2020, PC) Beaten: February 23rd, Playdate
A really solid little puzzle game that also happens to be the first Playdate game I've beaten. Well, I say I've beat it, but I technically skipped two levels. The game is a bit too big-brained for my small-brain at times. What I did play was delightful, often challenging (and usually manageable), and overall charming. The game works with its constraints pretty well, making use of the tiny screen size and limited color options (Playdate is 1bit), but it's really readable. I like that the music changes a bit depending on which of the two colors you currently are (grey or darker grey). Overall, I thought this was a solid game that was worth the couple bucks I spent on it. There's 45 puzzles in this package and they're all pretty decent.

favorite games of the 2010s
Games with an American release within the 2010s. Arranged roughly in the order I played them, because figuring out favoritism is hard. Spoiler-lite. Also, in case it needs to be said, saying a game is my favorite doesn’t mean I endorse everything the game endorses.
Also important: this is about favoritism, not quality. I’m not saying these are the best games.
Okay.
Tumblr media
Persona 3: Portable (Atlus)
P3 was always secondary to P4 to me until Persona 3: Portable came along. This isn't everyone's experience, but being able to play games as a female character is a big deal to me. FeMC's positioning as a capable, respected leader who isn't temporary and isn’t just some guy’s love interest is so wonderful. And I love that the game allows her to social link the entire main cast. While Ken's romantic option was a terrible choice, many of the others benefit: her friendship with Junpei is rich, touching, and believable, even when it devolves into resentment; Akihiko's and Shinjiro's arcs are sweet, but also melancholy; Yukari, Mitsuru, and Fuuka are supportive best friends without all the baggage of the male MC's love routes; even Koromaru gets his spotlight. Ryoji's social link adds important depth to his character, reframing the later stages of the game. As wonderful as Elizabeth is, I find I like Theo even better. The battle system is vastly improved, and while the visuals suffer in the PSP transfer, the story's still told well. P3P remains one of my absolute favorite games and was a great start to the decade.
Tumblr media
Nier: Gestalt (Cavia)
Something you’ll see repeated across this list is that I love strong, complex character bonds. The emotional core of a game is really important to me. In combination, this game has one of the most unique main casts, and, in their closeness, one of the most powerful. The jaggedness of Nier, Kainé, Emil, and Weiss fit together as an intense and sympathetic whole. You want so much to see them all safely escape the dark stories surrounding each of them. Nier's secondary strength is its New Game +, which is wrenching, but reminds the player that you never see the whole story in just your first glance.
Tumblr media
Fate/Extra (Type Moon & Imageepoch)
For seven weeks, Hakuno fights her way through a blood tournament; the story never spares her from it. Most often, a repetitive story structure is a liability, but in Fate/Extra, it builds the drama. Knowing from week to week that most of the cast is going to die – understanding, increasingly, that Hakuno may not have a happy ending waiting for her – the repetition and inevitability adds to the experience. All three of her potential Servants are interesting, funny, lovable, and morally troubling, and each plays well off of Hakuno's personality. Which Hakuno, despite being a silent protag, has plenty of. The game falls short in a number of areas, but for me, intercharacter relationships are always a big deal, and Hakuno's bond with each Servant is detailed, compelling, and develops across the entire game.
Tumblr media
Tales of Xillia 2 (Bandai Namco Studios)
The original ToX is the richer, more complete, more epic game, and definitely the place where you should first meet these characters and this world. But for me, ToX2 edges out its parent for the uniqueness of its premise, its endearing silent protagonist, and the shattering twists and turns of its later plot points. I don't usually like kid characters, but Elle is a useless sidekick worth fighting for, every inch of the way.
Tumblr media
Resonance of Fate (tri-Ace)
Set in a broken post-apocalyptic city, this game feels like a combination of Wild Arms and Xenogears. The story is intense and cryptic with a carefully controlled delivery to the player. The three main characters hide their wounds as well as their strengths – until circumstances force them into the open. There's some regrettable juvenile humor, and the story remains too shadowy in places, but Vashyron's, Leanne's, and Zephyr's bond kept me wanting to know more about them and the punishing circumstances they've been left in.
Tumblr media
Nier: Automata (PlatinumGames)
Nier: Gestalt taught me that not everything would be as it seemed, and Nier: Automata fulfills that warning a second time. But what makes me love it are the three protagonists, 2B, 9S, and A2. Throughout the different story paths, each one sees their role change from hero to antagonist or antagonist to hero relative to the others' positions. This is such a stand-out concept, and it's written very well. Even when a character shifts from hero to antagonist, they still keep your sympathy; perhaps you don't agree with them, but you still feel for them so much. Incredible music and rideable moose are also a plus.
Tumblr media
Horizon Zero Dawn (Guerilla Games)
I can always find room for improvement, but, for me, there's just too much to love about this game. Traveling over the gorgeous environments is wonderful by itself. The gameplay is engrossing, allowing you to try so many different strategies across different fights. The npcs are intriguing. The setting is unique. The monster designs are fantastic. The game gives you reasons to want to fight the villains, yet doesn't leave them unrealistic or ludicrously unrelatable. The hero, Aloy, is no-nonsense but not invincible, practical but also tender, and it's so satisfying building her legend alongside her. The story ends satisfyingly, but leaves the world wide open, just waiting for a sequel. This is a horizon I want to cross again and again.
Tumblr media
Transistor (Supergiant Games)
People complain about the story being too obscure, and that's justified at times. But the heart of the game isn't about plot – it's about emotions. Specifically, the emotions Red and Boxer have towards the city, and the emotions Red and Boxer have towards each other. The game organically builds both of these relationships across five hours of gameplay, latching right on to the player's heartstrings and making you worry and fight every step of the way. The gameplay is deeply customizable, the art direction is velvety and lush, and the music is not only gorgeous, but sometimes subtly intermixed with the narrative. The world is shrinking around these characters, and you want to see them through to safety – and you wish you had more time to know them better.
Tumblr media
The Banner Saga (Stoic Studio) (all three games)
Its narrative overlaps different plot arcs. There's more than one hero. The story is mature and serious, often threatening you with despair, but still urging you to believe that somehow your brave characters can make it through safely. Your decisions directly influence who lives, who dies, and where the story turns. The music is haunting. The game evokes Lord of the Rings, from its art style to its Norse influences to its focus on the significant actions of humble people. But it still shoulders its way out of that shadow with its giants, centaurs, and multiple central female characters. A game you want to play repeatedly, if you can stand the responsibility of having so many characters’ lives in your hands.
Tumblr media
Pyre (Supergiant Games)
Purgatory Basketball sounds like a nightmare premise for me, focusing on the kind of gameplay I'm terrible at. However, the game is accommodating enough that I not only won my rites, I enjoyed the process. Even when I was bad at it. But what makes me love the game is its cast. While not all characters can get equal focus on a single playthrough, each is interesting, some very outside the typical RPG character cast. The main villain is handled atypically, and the story avoids many of the tired plot beats I've gotten sick of over the years. The main character, the Reader, is given a surprising amount of flexibility, and they're just another one of Supergiant Games’ protagonists who are silent, but still make a definite impact on the game's story and playing experience.
In short, this was a good decade for me, game-wise, especially in the last two years. Hopefully there will be lots of stand-outs in the 2020s too.

5 Proven Ways to Master Instagram Reels: What Brands Need to Know
Tumblr media
The powerhouse of visual communication, Instagram’s Reels is more than a place for dance challenges and quick how-tos. With its wide reach and griping format, it is one of the best places to generate a buzz around your brand and reel in more customers.
From high fashion brands to individual contributors to the NBA, everyone is on Reels trying to bring in more business, right after Instagram introduced Reels.
As a business, there are some benefits to being on Instagram with Reels. So, what are these, and how can you use this feature to drive engagement with your customers?
Let's find out.
What Are Instagram Reels Exactly?
Instagram Reels are short videos that are usually accompanied by music and last from 15 seconds to 30 seconds. Like its most prominent competitor TikTok, Reels videos are fun, casual, and easy to pass on a message.
Since its Instagram, filters are also a part of Reels; you can use its AR-enabled tools to make exciting videos with special effects. Basically, there are endless creative options when it comes to Reels.
Why Should Businesses Consider Instagram Reels?
As a business owner, Reels gives you a quick fun way to tap into trending content or jump on the latest challenge to create a buzz for your brand. It is less time-consuming than a long-form video, but its short duration makes it less expensive and quicker to produce.
Reels are usually people-focused that make your brand human, handing a possibility to a lot of sharing and engagement, if done the right way. Reels is the perfect place for your brand to let its hair down and connect with the audience.
Take a look at Sephora beauty chain’s Reels strategy that blends the internet’s cat fixation with its product launches. The cat video where the products are props has 1.2 million views! Sephora also features some make-up tutorials as well as discount promotions.
Tumblr media
Reels can be an effective way to reach out to your audience and brand your business. The trick here is to attack the explore page by engaging with your audience through a fun and informative video.
Unlike traditional marketing platforms, your videos need to move away from just your product. Instagram Reels are a chance to focus on the story behind the brand. Let us look at some ways you can master the art of marketing in 15 seconds.
1. Repurpose TikTok Videos
Have a TikTok video idea that has a lot of views? Use it on Reels.
Since Instagram’s video sharing tool is relatively new, viral trends and challenges tend to appear on Reels a week after TikTok. Use TikTok videos that received a good response to stay ahead in your IG Reels game.
Tumblr media
French luxury retailer Balmain takes this a step further and uses the same video on both platforms to maintain consistency across social media channels.
In this case, the highlighted video has received more views on Instagram Reels than TikTok. And the difference is drastic!
2. Share Educational Content Fun Way
Since Instagram Reels is all about entertaining content, your products can not be the video’s primary focus. You can create bite-sized content around it that is informative and set to catchy music.
Take a look at this Reel From Grammarly. The brand is very active on Instagram and taking maximum advantage of Reels for the Brand. The brand is all about fixing grammar for businesses and individuals. They simply showed how you can replace “very” from your content and make it more catchy.
Tumblr media
It is a perfect example of educational content. And the Reel runs trendy music in the background so people can quickly relate to the current trend. This Reel received almost 70k views on Instagram.

3. Showcase The Application Of The Products Quickly
You have about 15 seconds to showcase your product and even less time before your viewer moves on to the next reel, so jump right in and show them how to use it.
Remember that reels are just a way to pique their interest, and you do not have to elaborate on the benefits of the product and why they should visit your site to know more.
Tumblr media
Take the example of MAC Cosmetics who is condensing the hours of make-up into short videos that give you a quick look into using their products. This is a clever way to get the customers interested in heading over to their site to know more.
MAC receives 500k views on the Reels on an average, and 10k+ likes on every video! For more take a look at An Ultimate Guide to Build an Instagram Story Content Strategy.
4. Behind The Scenes
Instagram Reels is a great place to show the story behind your brand and connect with your audience. Take them through the process of launching your next product or the next marketing campaign idea, or even a website update.
You could have a fun clip about your employees taking on a dance challenge or just pranks at the office. Remember to keep it light and people-focused.
Tumblr media
Take a look at this fun video from the HubSpot team on last-minute Halloween Costumes! It’s fun, casual, and talks a lot about your company culture.
5. Display Offers & Discounts
Who doesn’t like free things? Another sure way of getting your customer’s attention is by displaying your offers and discounts. Catchy music, a big banner that tells them where to find the deal, the coupon code, eye-catching visuals, and you are set. Special offers, especially around the coming holiday season, will definitely get you the eyeballs you need.
Reels can help you increase customer engagement and help you stay connected with your audience. It allows your consumers a break from the hard sell and gives you the chance to market your product subtly.
The short videos are especially great for small businesses as it is not very expensive and does not require a large budget. By jumping on trends, you give them an insider’s look into your business. They enable you to reach out to a broad audience and create a buzz around your brand.
4 Tips For Crafting Successful Instagram Reels
You may think that Reels and TikTok are the same, so why invest in making videos for Reels. While they do belong to the same format, there are two main differences.
First, from 15 seconds to 30 seconds, the Reels are shorter than the 1-minute videos TikTok allows. Two, Reels are a part of a much bigger Instagram ecosystem. With posts, stories, and now Reels, you have to see it as one big strategy to succeed.
Instagram also clocks in more than 1 billion monthly active users, according to Statista, and you have only 15 seconds to convince them to head over to your site. So, let’s see how exactly you can execute a fine Instagram Reel that brings you engagement.
1. Post It On The Right Time
Content on Instagram moves fast, and if you post at the wrong time, it will likely be buried. A study by Sprout Social indicates that the best time to post anything on Instagram is between Wednesday at 11 am and Friday at 11 am. Mid-week blues make Wednesday the best time to post anything, while Sunday is the day people give social media a rest.
Tumblr media
This is not to say your Reels should be silent the rest of the time but keep the more engaging videos about launches, discounts, and viral challenges for these days when more people can see your content. You can also use scheduling software to manage your time and ensure you set aside time to post the content at regular intervals.

2. Stay With The Trend
Trends are a great way to use an already popular theme and create awareness for your brand.
However, viral trends have a short shelf life, and you have to continually stay on the Trend watch to strike it when it is gaining popularity. If you are still doing the Renegade dance in October, you will not drive any engagement.
One way to do this is to take a look at TikTok for possible trends that are gaining traction. Most of these viral trends tend to start with video by individual creators, but once celebrities jump on it, their reach amplifies. You can quickly check for the “Discover” section in TikTok, and find the most trending topics:
Tumblr media
3. Use Humor Wherever Possible
As a brand, you may be tempted to make content only around your business, but remember Reels should be light and entertaining. There is no better way than humor to get more views and drive engagement.
As I said, Reels are people-focused, and you can use your team to come up with humorous content that may not even be related to your core business.
Tumblr media
Take fitness instructor Cassey Ho’s Blogilates page that uses humor around food and exercises to drive more engagement. Notice how her Reels are not just about workouts but pokes fun at eating habits. By using humor, she is connecting with her audience and making herself more relatable.
4. Use The Right Background Music
The music sets the tone for your Reels and is a crucial element in its success. Choose music that is popular and also fits your content. Since the music is only for a very short duration, ensure that it is not too abrupt. Also, opt for trending music like the recent rise of K-pop music that includes BTS and Blackpink.
Reels also allows you to upload original audio. If you plan to use your music, make sure that it is clear and sounds like professionally recorded music.
These are just some of the basic ideas that will help you use Instagram Reels to benefit your business. However, there is no structure to them, and you should innovate and get creative with your visual content.
Since Reels is a new platform, you have the chance to attract more viewers and become one of the top creators. Get the first-mover advantage with these tips to create a name for yourself.
Bottomline
With its existing user base, Instagram Reels is a great way to tie up your marketing efforts on the platform. With Shop, Stories, and now Reels, you can create an all-around image for your brand and also lead them right to the checkout counter, all on the same platform.
There are two major things to remember here - First, Keep it casual, lighthearted, and fun. Secondly, stay relevant to your brand and create content around it.

“Asparagus, Tiny Toad Brown, Shadow Blur”
3) If you're aware of the wider pattern, at least you have somewhere to fit behaviours? I also fight being insanely judgey, but Boyfriend's complete lack of cynicism towards his fellow human does help. I've never read Banner of the Damned, is it worth reading?
QUITE. It’s one of the Inda books, the one that’s not actually an Inda book but takes place 400 years later. I love it and miss it; someone in NC has my copy, and I haven’t gotten another yet.
It is an Inda book though, so it’s quite long. Let me know what you think!
unfavorableinstigation replied to your post “Asparagus, Tiny Toad Brown, Shadow Blur”
2) I was definitely the Worm Saving Kid as well - I seem to remember a large, writhing bucket one post-rainstorm when I was feeling particularly crusader-y. It was partly about being sad, partly the waste of *not* having them in the gardens, and partly the fact that I was proud of my strong stomach. I really do love a good snake. They have the coolest texture! PLEASE gush about Hyacinth if you want to!
Hyacinth is... I get to call him every night when I go home from capoeira, and tonight we spent the whole time trying to explain the same movement to each other. Slight variations, because we play different school, but the whole car ride trying to visualize and explain in different coordinate systems what turned out to be the exact same thing.
I would never have believed that I could stay up late talking to someone about sports, but here I am.
He changes the way I think about the world - the way I identify people, the way I see movement, the things I think to look at. It’s an endless source of fascination. Like. Being able to put on the facsimile of that lens that I am currently capable of? The idea of spending years with him and developing it stronger and stronger, except that he’ll be developing at the same time, with his own independent thought patterns, and I will get to learn from that as well? The things I am interested in, the things I am not, the ones that I’ll get round to just because I enjoy spending time with him... Being able to identify people even when my glasses are off. Endless conversations about what art is.
Being patiently reminded, by someone infinitely more patient than I am, that he is not a nice person, and the cheerful denials of things we both know to be patently true, for the sake of denial, and being able to know which grin he’s wearing as he gives them.
He is, technically speaking, not an attractive gentleman. He’s all kinds of disproportionate. He is Most Beautiful, and he is Prettyboy. And just... that he takes this strangely-put-together body of his, and inhabits it, without this monstrous division of self/brain/body that the stupid Greeks gave us, and that in so doing, he makes poetry that laughs out of it.
(Clarification: He’s not put together in a way that really stands out or causes physical discomfort, it’s just that some bits are longer than usual and some bits are shorter in strange combinations.)
You should see him play. Everyone should see him play. I wish I could just show everyone how he plays, because you don’t really know who he is until then. And then half the time he wastes it being polite, do I have to import his co-teacher as well just to explain to people why I am dating this incredible boy?
unfavorableinstigation replied to your post “Asparagus, Tiny Toad Brown, Shadow Blur”
1) You'll notice I'm extremely sparing about political posts on here, and even more so about American-context stuff - that's one of the reasons why. Left-wing radicals make me... Not quite as nervous as right-wing, but that's likely only because only one looks to be gaining enough power to harm at the moment. Plus, my heritage (and to some extent culture, if not religion) is Mennonite and justified violence is... A *fraught* subject.
I... If you get a chance, read The Friendly Persuasion by Jessamyn West. I am thinking specifically of The Battle of Finney’s Ford. It’s about violence, and Quakers. (I’ve been reading a lot about Quakers recently, but this is the one I grew up with.) This story concludes with one brother saying that he had to go fight this battle, because he can’t abide violence, and it was a thing that needed doing; and the other saying that he could by no means go fight, because he loves a good scrap. It’s sitting right by my bed, let me get the exact quote...
“Thee?” asked Josh, for whom the events of the past twenty-four hours were still uncertain. “Thee wasn’t fighting, was thee?”
“Well, I was a little,” Labe admitted.
“In the Guard?” Josh asked.
“No,” Labe said, “just kind of privately.”
“Why?”
“Well,” said Labe, “When I’s hunting thee a man sung a song.”
“I wouldn’t fight anybody about any song,” Josh said.
Labe didn’t say anything.
“I purely hate fighting,” said Josh. “Don’t thee, Labe?”
“Not so much,” Labe answered.
“I hate it,” Josh said. “That’s why I got to.”
“And I got not to,” Labe said, “because I like it.”
The other Quaker opinion I have on the matter is a more recent one, from a fellow who was happily following non-violence practices, and then he was in the grocery store watching some poor person get - I forget whether it was just verbally or also increasingly physically abused. So he stepped forward, made about two movements to get the offender on the ground, and then politely kept him there until other people could step in; and that gave him all sorts of hangups, because he realized he was not going to be able to believe in the complete absence of violence, because that was the most appropriate response to the situation, it was not otherwise going to be defused.
So I don’t know where I stand on violence. I know I’m much too predisposed to it, but at the same time, I play the one martial art that involves almost no touching, has no winner, and if anyone gets hurt it means everyone messed up. I know I don’t like fencing or aikido because they require you to try to hit people with weapons.
Maybe it’s what my mom said about spanking: If you’re going to spank your child, you have to do it with your hand, and in such a way that it hurts you more than it hurts the child, both physically and emotionally.

Pump it Up: How to Maximize Your B2B Content Marketing Campaign Investments
Let’s talk shoes for a moment. Years ago, I purchased a stunning pair Jimmy Choo stiletto pumps; they were all the rage at that time. I’d been eyeing them for months and I convinced myself that this rather spendy investment would pay dividends in style and wearability. When my Choos made their public debut, I was showered with compliments on how gorgeous they were. I was feeling great.
via GIPHY Of course, a few hours later a shooting pain in my Achilles tendon meant it was time to give them a rest, so I changed into tennis shoes. Today, those shoes are collecting dust in my closet. And every time I see them, I feel a mixture of regret (perhaps not my wisest investment after all) and longing to take them out for another spin (with the right insoles at a sitting event). B2B marketers are making huge investments in content this year, and that trend will only continue. From what we’re seeing across the industry, many marketers are investing in splashy content marketing campaigns. But like my Jimmy Choos, after the initial thrill and luster subsides, campaign content can start collecting dust at the back of the resource center and you may even wonder if it was worth the investment. The good news is, with the right insight and planning you can regret-proof you campaigns. Taking the time to ensure the right messaging, promotional strategy, and long-term opportunities can help you extend the life span and visibility of your campaigns and drive results that are meaningful to your team and brand. Here are five key considerations to help you do just that.
How to Maximize Your B2B Content Marketing Campaign Investment
#1 - Nail the hook.
This first step may be the trickiest, but it’s critical to build the foundation for a successful campaign. Creating a campaign hook that will inspire your target audience to engage, share, and talk about and remember your brand is both art and science. [bctt tweet="Creating a campaign hook that will inspire your target audience to engage, share, and talk about and remember your brand is both art and science. @Alexis5484 #B2BContentMarketing" username="toprank"] Let’s start with the science. In short, go with the data. Who is your ideal customer or prospect? Not just their job title and company size, but rather what problems are they trying to solve? Who do they trust? What are they interested in aside from doing their job? Where do they spend their time online? Leverage both quantitative and qualitative sources to bring this data together. Talk to your sales team or customer service reps since they are typically the most connected to your prospects and current customers. Engage in social media listening. Gather third party data. Perhaps consider creating your own data by designing and deploying a customer or industry survey. Then run the data you collect through the business lens. How do you solve your customers’ problems? What key features or benefits are deserving of more attention? What types of content (e.g. webinars, white papers, interactive infographics) can you create to garner the most attention and interest? And finally, how can you bring everything together under a creative umbrella for maximum resonance? This is where the art piece comes in. Tap into your best listeners, creative thinkers, and strategizers to finalize a theme and key messages that you believe will connect with and move your target audience. Now, this piece of advice can be key to testing the viability of your content hook both short- and long-term. Do some acid testing. Ask your network for their initial thoughts or run a few A/B tests on social media to see if your hook is resonating. You’re not just looking for thumbs up. You’re looking for messaging that is memorable, creates brand affinity, and propels the user to take action.
#2 - Make promotion part of the planning process so you’re ready for launch day and beyond.
Your team has put a lot of effort into building your campaign. But far too often, promotion is an afterthought rather than an integral part of the planning and strategy process. This ensures integration from the beginning, minimizes stress as you draw closer to launch day, and allows you to think more globally about how you can promote or repurpose into the future. [bctt tweet="Content promotion can’t be effective if it’s an afterthought. Your best practice would be to make promotion part of content planning. - @leeodden" username="toprank"] As you draw closer to launch, create a promotional timeline that includes your tactical mix and content types. Ideally, that timeline will be at least three months in length. This will help you prevent a campaign from flaming out after two weeks of heavy promotion. Your promotional timeline and plan could include:
Adding crosslinks and/or banner CTAs across your website or blog
Emails to customers and prospects
Social media messages, images, and video across major channels
A paid social targeting plan
Press releases or other third-party editorial
Repurposing plans (which we’ll get to in the next section)
Of course, when launch day arrives, the real work begins. Day 1 promotion is important to gaining campaign buzz, so plan to get all your promotion engines firing. But perhaps the most important piece of building out that promotional timeline is creating a cadence; tactics can be used beyond Day 1 or Week 1. (e.g. Just because you sent an email or press release on Day 1, doesn’t mean you can’t again on Day 7, Day 14, or Day 30.) For more insight on designing your promotional timeline, check out these 50 content promotion tactics.
#3 - Optimize … and repromote.
Since you did so much research and planning upfront, hopefully your message is resonating and you’re seeing great results one, two, three, or even four weeks out. But whether you’re meeting, exceeding, or falling short of your expectations, post-launch is the time to really maximize your investment. At launch, establish a regular check-in cadence with your team to review results and discuss campaign optimization opportunities. This is not the time to sit back and just watch the results roll in. You can start optimizing campaign performance on Day 1. There are two key areas to focus on during your check-ins:
Reach: Are you reaching your goals in terms of visibility? If not, you may need to look at additional channels (e.g. third party editorial) or adjust your paid investment (if you haven’t already). In addition, look at what channels are driving the most visibility and put more investment there.
Engagement: This is a time to review what messages, visuals, and channels are driving the most people to take action. If certain messaging isn’t working, swap it out. Take a look at the bounce rate, conversion rate, and time spent on your landing page. This is usually a prime place to make adjustments.
Optimization will help you throughout the course of the campaign to learn from what is working and make adjustments to ensure more reach and engagement (and less regret) throughout.
#4 - Repurpose … and repromote.
Every brand is sitting on a dust-collecting gold mine of content. Whether you’re launching a brand new campaign or you’re trying to resurrect (or reimagine) one from a months or years past, this consideration has unending relevance and applications. Also, if the above mentioned recommendation to create a three-month promotion production timeline felt too long, you may not have been thinking about repurposing opportunities. Here are a couple repurposing scenarios for your consideration: Repurpose to extend the life of your campaign. In this scenario you’re repurposing elements of an active campaign to drive back to your primary content hub. An easy way to repurpose content is to change up the format type. For example, pull out nuggets from a text based eBook and create a video for social media or YouTube to drive back to the original asset. If your content was audio or video, pull quotes and create a series of text based blogs driving back to the main asset. A new infographic, motion graphic, or blog content is a good reason to re-promote, remind your existing audience, and reach new prospects. Repurpose to create your next campaign. Even after the lifespan of a campaign is mostly over, that campaign investment can absolutely be leveraged for a future campaign. You can create an entirely new campaigns by bringing together previous content from other campaigns, blog posts, and influencer contributions. It can also work really well to freshen up an evergreen piece and re-release with new information. Here’s a recent example from *LinkedIn. The Sophisticated Marketer’s Guide to LinkedIn was a cornerstone campaign a few years back, and a helpful asset that had long-term appeal. And in honor of its fifth anniversary, the content and design was refreshed, re-released, and repromoted. Bonus tip: In order to be really effective at repurposing content, it really helps to have some kind of searchable repository of all the content that has been created organized by topic. Your website isn’t always the most reliable or complete source of content created. Read: A Tasty, Strategic Addition to the Content Marketing Table: ‘Repurposed Content Cobbler’
#5 - Integrate your B2B content marketing campaigns with your always-on strategy.
If you really want to maximize your B2B content marketing campaigns, you have to think long-term. Campaigns work hand-in-hand with your ongoing, always-on marketing efforts. Ultimately, your marketing efforts aim to fill the funnel, foster brand affinity, and achieve business ROI. If you design campaigns that fit within your core objectives, strategy, and marketing pillars, then they’ll always be a make-sense investment. In addition, integrating you campaigns within your always-on strategy can help you enhance your nurturing capabilities as they relate to your customers, prospects, and target audience, as well as influencers, by creating an interesting, steady drumbeat of content. It also makes repurposing easier and helps extend and keep conversations top-of-mind.
Pump Your B2B Content Marketing Campaigns Up
Flashy, attention-grabbing campaigns can be great investments. They can drive valuable spikes in traffic, engagement, or conversions, as well as help you target specific audiences or verticals. However, without an eye toward the long-term, campaigns often end up like my beautiful Jimmy Choo pumps: A wasted investment that’s collecting dust. By spending time upfront to thoughtfully identify your creative hook and robust, longer-than-a-few-weeks promotional strategy, you can continue to promote and optimize your campaign content for maximum impact and ROI. Are you notching some serious big wins on a recent campaign? How do you keep that momentum going? How do you apply your learnings to what comes next? Check out my post on driving continuous content marketing improvement. *Disclosure: LinkedIn is a TopRank Marketing client.

Case Study #1 Renée Green : Zoned for Unforeseen Contact
I am drawn to Renée Green research rich approach to her practice, with no fidelity to materials outside their phenomenological equivalencies and her affective intersubjective worlding of the very personal with the universal. I sense a strong identification with the states of being that she continuously investigates, as well as her invested interest in history, philosophy, literature and their related offshoots.
Tumblr media
Linguistic scholar Mary Louise Pratt introduced the concept of the contact zone as, “the space of colonial encounters, the space in which peoples geographically and historically separated come into contact with each other and ongoing relations, usually involving conditions of coercion, radical inequality, and intractable conflict.”[1]
Although, Pratt initially developed this term in the context of linguistic and language theories, the term has found resonance in several other disciplines and practices. In 1994, reconfiguring the concept of the contact zone, Renée Green created a complex, multipart bilingual work called Negotiations in the Contact Zone, in collaboration with a group of invited participants that included Miwon Kwon, Lynne Tillman and Manthia Diawara among others.
“Renée Green organized and moderated a watershed symposium entitled Negotiations in the Contact Zone, in which the artist expertly framed a set of issues that identified a burgeoning international phenomenon within the field of contemporary art. In the relatively intimate gallery space of The Drawing Center in Lower Manhattan, Green assembled what she intended to be a ‘provocative and fruitful dialogue’ between ‘cultural producers (visual artists, video producers, filmmakers, writers)’ and ‘cultural critics’ and steadily asked, ‘What happens when art seems to be taking the face of theoretical critique, in addition to traveling outside of the gallery?’”[2]
Writing about Negotiations in the Contact Zone, Green states that her interpretation of the contact zone within this work is “not only in reference to a past colonial conflict but in relation to the manifestations that ensued from that contact, as well as the various moments when negotiations between different cultures have to be made. The negotiations […] in a broad sense as ranging from the literal special instances to the psychological ways of coping with what appears to be foreign, by using creative enabling approaches.”[3]
The contact zone exists as a contested space of unexpected encounters foregrounding negotiations, mediation and arbitration that make destabilization a durational experience necessary for any form of orientation. Beginning with 1994’s Negotiations in the Contact Zone Renée Green’s works engage, activate and operate within and also as a contact zone, not only in the relationship of the works to the audience but also of the works in relationship to one another. Renée Green’s practice is zoned for unforseen contact.
I want to specifically focus on Endless Dreams and Water Between , a 2009 commission from the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, UK, that was also exhibited at the YBCA in San Francisco in 2010. “It includes banners with ‘space poems,’ audio works, a feature length experimental film, three short films and printed ephemera. Sensations and perceptions are intertwined with various histories, sites and people surrounded by water. The installation unfolds from a script written by the artist containing a series of long, contemplative letters exchanged between four female characters and their engagement with a memoir by French novelist George Sand. It is saturated with images of the sea as well as the Bay Area, Manhattan and Mallorca, locations where the fictional characters live.”[4]
Tumblr media
In Come Closer: Prelude to Endless Dreams And Water Between, Green writes, “For over a year I’ve been searching for points of entry into an oceanic mass of material I’ve collected over time. It has as its basis my repeatedly evidenced interest in, and attraction to, large bodies of water. It’s isn’t only my interest but also the force or forces of movement as well as the desire to move through water of many others, generations before me, that has been a stimulus for a project about ceaseless desires and attempts to fulfill these – no matter how fertile the attempts might be – and the diverse impetuses leading to the traversal of water and what is or isn’t.”[5]
The installation work Endless Dreams and Water Between  creates impossible encounters via shifting sites within a trans-temporal and trans-locative zones of a poly-indexical present. The term poly-indexical is my attempt at developing an extension of the conceptual artist Adrian Piper’s idea of the indexical present, which she defines in her book Out of Order, Out of Sight: Selected Writings in Meta-Art, 1968-1992. I wanted to connect Piper’s concept to my own practice’s approach to the present as a conjugated present, where the past and the future are tenses of the present also present in the present. The prefix ‘poly,’ denoting many as opposed to one, many-s both the referential index and the context in which it is dependent to connote meaning. The poly-indexical present allows for conjugation which in turn allows potentials of mobility, layering and perceptual shifts. It also exponentially manys the negotiations necessary to navigate Pratt’s “spacial and temporal copresence within radically asymmetrical relations of power.” In Endless Dreams and Water Between, by imagining the contact zones between islands, both mapped and fabled, Green obliquely addresses the complex and intertwined relationships between self/other, history/literature, margin/center, fact/fiction, the past/present, as well as representation/misrepresentation and more.
“The film installation epicenter resides in Endless Dreams and Water Between, a feature film with four fictitious characters sustaining an epistolary exchange in which their “planetary thought” is weaved with the physical locations they inhabit, visual and aural characters in themselves: the island of Manhattan, the island of Majorca, in Spain, and the islands and peninsula that form the San Francisco Bay Area. The characters reflections and dreams enact what could be described as “an archipelagic mind,” linking worlds, time, and space. This film’s stream of sounds, images, and thoughts contrapuntally intersect the two silent films, Stills and Excess; the former is a film of related still images taken from the different international shooting locations, interrupted by a phrase alluding to the paradoxical processes of photography and memory noted by Henri Bergson; the latter film presents a reflection on structuralist film, as a mixed homage and further rumination on avant-garde film aspirations. In this combinatory projection space, the perceiver’s attention splits and circulates, allowing water-thought forms of world-perception to emerge.”[6]
Prioritizing a durational experience within the contact zone, for its YBCA iteration, the exhibition’s entrance ticket, “is good for unlimited returns, with no additional fee, for the run of the exhibition. This generous gesture encourages engaging with this show in stages, so that one may focus on a single part or piece at a time, allowing the texts, images, sounds, and themes to accumulate and make ever-greater meaning. When experienced in this way, this exhibition becomes very personal. Just as one cannot properly experience a book by picking it up and flipping through, this exhibition needs to be engaged like an exploded multimedia novel of great depth and beauty. It develops a relationship with the attentive viewer.[7] In an interview with the San Francisco Gate, Green says, “someone asked me if there is a best way to enter the show and I said, ‘No, not really.’ An interesting approach could be to go through it and observe its formal arrangement without trying to focus and then return and see what calls to your attention. It's not like I'm trying to teach you anything.”[8]
In addition the phenomenological expression of the contact zone in Renée Green’s work, her very specific choice of materials and her method of utility of those materials also operates through this disrupted relational region. The materials also make unexpected contacts. In the installation work Endless Dreams and Water Between, words function as water, banners whisper poems instead of screaming declarations, video transmits dreams and paper presents historic correspondence between people that never existed. In Green’s works, the materials are also zoned for unforeseen contact.
And then there is another form of unforeseen contact she creates with the reconstitution of earlier works into new exhibition, conjugating the cycles of each piece. Green practices a continued rebeginning. For example, “a new series of prints produced for Sigetics provide an elaboration on the Endless Dreams and Water Between constellation: a cast of characters and their colorful thoughts, a compressed textual presentation of the feature film, and a proposal for the material emergence of the ‘momentary nexus’ that constitutes The September Institute, a non-utopian vortex of thinkers, creators, and artists that gather each September in the island of Majorca.” Sigetics was Renée Green’s 2011 exhibition at Elizabeth Dee Gallery in New York, two years post the opening of Endless Dreams and Water Between.[9]
In the one of the video portions of Endless Dreams and Water Between, a voice over narrates the following text, as images of various islands flow across the screen, “We have to get back to the movement of the imagination that makes the deserted island a model, a prototype of the collective soul. First, it is true that from the deserted island it is not creation but re-creation, not the beginning but a re-beginning that takes place. It is not enough that everything begin, everything must begin again once the cycle of possible combinations has come to completion.”[10]
Islands are impossible potentials for contact. In the work Endless Dreams and Water Between, Renée Greens zones islands as sites of continuous unforeseen contact.

How the HubSpot Content Team Overcame the "Pivot to Video"
You've probably heard. 2017 was the year of the “Pivot to Video.” Publishers decreased or entirely scrapped their written editorial operations to focus on creating video. And right on cue, the internet erupted with opinions (and a fair amount of panic) on the shift.
People began asking: Are writing skills still worth it? Will this shift to video last? And how hard is it to learn video anyway?
Some of the panic was warranted. Talented writers from MTV News, Vox Media, and the like were losing their jobs. Meanwhile, publishers were scrambling to find their next viable business model.
The motivation behind the movement was two-fold: money and time. Publishers can charge more for video advertising than banner ads in text-based articles. It’s simple math. But it’s also about where and how people spend their time online. According to HubSpot Research, 54% of consumers want to see more video from businesses and brands. With more consumers turning to video, media outlets and social networks began prioritizing content that kept viewers on-site.
The Post-"Pivot to Video" Reality
So now that this "pivot to video" buzz has largely subsided (at least until the next major Facebook algorithm change, am I right?), where does the future of content stand? One thing is certain, consumers are not abandoning written content completely. While people may be consuming more video content than ever before, the popularity of video content and written content aren't mutually exclusive.
But that doesn't mean we should ignore this "pivot to video" either.
Here on the HubSpot content team, we wanted to take on the shift, responsibly. We had a dream to create high impact, editorial videos to (1) make our campaigns more interesting, and (2) create content in the format people were increasingly consuming.
So, over the the past year we did just that: Demystify the “pivot to video” by transitioning a small team of writers who enjoyed consuming great multimedia content into a team that actually created that content.
So, how'd it go?
Not bad. While the past year has had it's fair share of trashed scripts and late-night tutorial binging, our content team was able to create some of the highest performing videos for HubSpot in 2017. Overall, we created 30+ videos and brought in over a million views … and that’s just on YouTube.   How did we do it? After a year of refining, here's our playbook for creating a high-ranking YouTube video that complements our written content strategy, not replaces it.
HubSpot's "Pivot to Video" Playbook
It's no surprise there's a lot that goes into making a video. Days or even weeks of work often translate to mere seconds. While crafting those sort of knock-your-socks-off, creative videos is the ultimate goal, there was a major hurdle we needed to tackle first: process.
Here's what that looks like today:
Sure, it’s pretty involved, but we’ve found that the secret to making a high-preforming video in the least amount of time is having all parties involved from the beginning. No matter if you're a writer, designer, or producer, you're in it from the start finalizing the point-of-view, brainstorming graphics, and revising the final animations.
With this spirit of collaboration established, we generally break our video process down into five key stages.
1. Research
Not all topics warrant videos and it’s important to only dedicate video resources towards the ones that do. Therefore, our first step in the video process (and one that's consistently ongoing) is to identify content gaps.
Run through your high performing blog posts to find topics that could be good candidates for videos. Next, go through both Google and YouTube search results to see what information and content already exists for a topic of interest. If the topic has high search volume and is a good fit for your audience, consider making a video.

Consider our "What is Artificial Intelligence (or Machine Learning)?" explainer video. A quick keyword search for "what is artificial intelligence" told us the topic was growing in popularity fast. And after scouring the existing videos on YouTube, we began to brainstorm a storyline that would differentiate us from the pack, and ultimately, rank near the top of the list for the term.
  2. Writing
Writing for video is drastically different than writing long-form copy. Of course, you can and should use existing research or blog structures to get your script started. But with video, shorter is usually better. We try to keep scripts around 500 words.
You’ll also need to hook your audience in the first 5 seconds. If a viewer makes it through the first 5 seconds, they’re more likely to stick around and have a longer watch time. Longer watch times give your videos higher authority which leads more views and more views lead to a higher ranking.

For example, see how our video on "The Power of Advertising Slogans" grabs the viewers attention before they have a chance to bounce.
We recommend writing scripts in Google Docs for easy collaboration with other team members. This also allows for later steps, like art direction, to begin earlier on in the process. We break our scripts into two columns with the actual script on the left and the art direction on the right.
3. Production
With the words on paper and art direction generally set, we move on to production. The time and work required for this step can vary greatly between videos.
Typically, the main decision we need to make is if the video will be a talking head video or an animated video. If we want to create a video to complement a blog post, we typically stick with a talking head. These are low-budget quick wins and generally can be completed in a day or two. On the other hand, animated videos can take multiple weeks to create, but lend themselves well to more complex topics that need to be explained with visuals.
Talking head videos are filmed in our studio with the help of a three-point lighting setup and an iPad teleprompter. Don't have a dedicated studio? Be sure to check out our Ultimate Guide to Video Marketing for some unexpected tips, including transforming that spare conference room into an ideal video production room.
For animated videos, we start by spending a day or two on art direction. Here, visual ideas get added to the right column of the script. Our designer can then take those ideas and design out a set of artboards using Adobe Illustrator or Photoshop.
Meanwhile, we record a voiceover of the script. All you need is a basic microphone, your laptop, and a few deep breaths to calm the nerves. Remember, it's best to remain conversational as opposed to sounding to sales-y.
Although video requires a large time commitment, we can assure you that you don’t need a Superbowl ad budget to get started. Check out this chart for equipment you can buy on any budget:

  4. Post-Production
You have your footage, audio, and designs. Finally, it's time to bring everything together. For talking head videos, use Adobe Premiere Pro, iMovie, or another equivalent video editor to cut and arrange the footage.
If you're looking to take on animated videos, this stage will claim most of your time. We bring our videos to life with the help of Adobe After Effects and Animate, a process that can take one to three weeks. If you have a dedicated video editor or animator on your team, you’re all set! If not, you’ll need to invest in freelance talent or training up your own willing colleague with the help online tutorials. We've found great success of School of Motion, Lynda, and Skillshare.
More and more we are combining the talking head and animated videos to solve for efficiencies while keeping our creative standard high. Check out our explainer video on the Internet of Things to see how we split up an engaging script between talking head footage and quirky animations.
    5. Promotion
Once video production and editing starts wrapping up, it’s time to come up with a promotional strategy and get your video ranking on YouTube. Including relevant keywords in your video title, uploading closed captions, and including your script in the description box are easy ways to optimize your video for search.

We also embed our videos in relevant blog posts and site pages to help drive organic views. If you need to boost your views, consider putting money behind your video. A few hundred dollars can go a long way on YouTube. Finally, be sure to promote your videos on your other social channels to help drive engagement.
Although video production requires some upfront costs and can have a steep learning curve, we don’t see this trend disappearing any time soon. Businesses that wish to drive engagement should consider making video a part of their marketing strategy.

SWOT Analysis
Strengths
I feel like I have good social skills, I am personable, friendly and have the ability to get on with almost anyone, regardless of ace, race, nationality or sub-culture.
I posses an Avant-guard nature, I find it easy to think outside the box and often use this to aid me in conceiving original and interesting ideas. I can write film in a standard fashion but with my own twist. This means I have locked down the classic elements witch make people comfortable with film, like the mise-en-scene but can bring exciting, odd new narratives to the table.
I am experienced on many platforms (e.g. Ableton, Avid media composer, Premier-pro, Photoshop and the entire Microsoft office software package).
I love watching and especially love making film, the way you go on a journey on which you learn along the way is excellently clever. A film is visually pleasing but there is a lot more to a it, we as human beings are inherently smart and as we watch a film we slowly piece together an ideal/ideal derived directly from the film, this idea can influence the way we interact with others and live our life’s.
I wish to enter into the film industry, working for an independent production company, most probably based in London. I have made this decision as I wish to be employed in the film industry, as films are not constant work like television, I must be attached to a production company as this way I will receive constant work in my desired industry.
Film as apposed to television is more interesting, things seem to be more serious in general and the space for experimentation is much larger. You also work in a bigger team of people, I love being on set and several things happening at the same time but all united under a common cause. Also although there is constant reoccurring money with a good TV show, the amounts of money that can be made in the film industry is a lot more. A lot of TV shows rely heavily on set work, for British film we shoot on location a lot, this is something I find exciting as you get to see and be in new places a lot.
A film set has the need for people who can think on there feet, make decisions quickly but be respectful and considerate in your actions. I can do these things well and plan on using these skills to help chisel out a place for me in the industry.
Ultimately I wish to end up directing film but I realise that this is not really an entry level job. I will more than likely have to start as a runner, work my way to production assistant. From there I will be in a good enough position to start to apply for 3rd assistant director and from there work my way up to 1st ad and then to director. I do realise that this is an extremely long process, however I 100% plan on directing on smaller self run projects all along the way to help home in my skills.
I love working with people and I love having to interact with them, I find it very interesting and I find it helps make your job a lot more pleasurable as you receive such variety of personality in the way of people. I also really love having creative control over a project, it is a position like this which I feel I can extend my self to my full potential as I know I am in space which offers freedom, which is something I strive for.
When looking at the people who are directors, they are my type of people, they are odd and always have an alternate creative rational, they are not afraid to be bold.
These are all things that I feel I encapsulate and this is reason as to why I feel I can direct, also everyone I have worked with has commended me on my directing skill and professionalism which has pushed me to strive further.
My most notable achievement so far has been my graduate film, nothing else I have made or help make has ever come close to the professionalism and overall quality of the final product. It is not decorated with festival awards and accepted submissions, however we do definitely plan on taking it to festivals….and an even though it is early, I’m pretty darn sure that we will be showing at the BFI graduate show.
I attribute my success to hard work, dedication, love for the project at hand and having the ability to comfortably think outside of the box.
Society places success under a banner of material possessions and the amount of money you have. I measure my success in feeling, success is a feeling you can only achieve if you succeed in the way you want and have something you can be proud of, therefore according to this way of thinking, I am the only one who can tell me weather or not I am successful.
I have quite a bit of knowledge about the so called ‘street’ subculture and feel that bringing their influences to a company would be extremely helpful as it will widen there demographic and ultimately earn them more money.
I feel my greatest asset Is my ability to take something quite normal and standard and turn it into something interesting, unusual and uncanny.
Weaknesses
My punctuality could me more on point, I will be at every single meeting or organised event I am required, however I am late some of the time and this can get in the way of the task at hand.
I’m very free flowing and this translates to my organisation being not well kept, unless I specifically put a lot of effort in to adhere to the way others have outlined.
I also do find my memory isn’t to good, unfortunately if I don’t write something down or have 100% interest in that thing I’m likely to forget it.
I should avoid situations where I allow myself to much freedom, freedom is important but I feel that I must channel it in order to benefit from it, otherwise I am running feral.
I like to avoid bad vibes where I can, this does not mean that I wont stand up for what I believe in but when I get hot headed I can say things I do not mean, avoiding confrontation by being companionate helps me the most. I should also avoid getting to heavily involved with one element in filmmaking, I can sometimes become fixated on something when I’m so passionate about it, however when working in a team, which is nearly always in the industry. The way I move on is that someone usually advises me to move on, which I easily do, just after I realise what I am doing.
Professionally I find that when I like an idea, I find it hard to move on from it and try something else, even when I know what I want to do is the wrong thing. I like to push the boundaries however I need to know when to know to push or back down from the boundaries. This can equal me wasting time which, obviously on set is of the essence.
I Must remember that a set is like an office, it is a place of work, it is not a place for any messing around. It is a playground for thoughts and ideas but not for actions, I must stay composed and calm on set, which is easily done, I just must remember to adhere to that way of thinking. If I don’t adhere to this, I will appear unprofessional and this will hinder me from getting future employment.
I don’t fully understand every aspect of filmmaking, which is something that must be required of a director. However, this is something that will come with time and at this stage no one would expect this of me. This will make the production process a lot slower as people will have to be explaining things to me along the way.Another weakness is the fact I have type one diabetes, this can affect me greatly if not well managed. It can cause me to have fits and blackout, however if I stay on top of it, I can avoid this from happening.
When younger my Avant-guard nature was not popular with the majority of students, I felt like I required neish community to integrate into. I would always them find eventually but its not easy, this has created me to feel conflicted as I feel like I am being to full of myself, giving requirements for being mates with me but then on the other side I want to be with like minded people, people who truly get me and accept and love me for my oddities.
Opportunities
Luckily I live just over an hour on the train to London, this puts me at a huge advantage as I am located close to the UK’s central hub for the TV and film industry. I also will leave university with a degree, hopefully at a high level which will definitely advance my job prospects for the near future. I cannot rely on public transport to be able to get from set to set as it can change frequently and can often run to early times in the morning. Therefore, this summer I am going to learn how to drive as this is something that seems to be required for prosperity in this industry and it will help with post-graduate life in general.
My chosen profession is directing, which is mainly revolved around interacting with people, this relies on little to no technology. The state of the art in my chosen profession would probably just being up to date with contemporary happening which I will use to help my actors understand roles and motivations well. Also having a well rounded personality which is focused on being calm as this in turn is picked up by your actors and out turned by them.
I am aware of what needs to be done in order top succeed in my industry, and I am doing what I can at this point in time. Unfortunately, I am required to network, however I can only network inside of university as this is where my life is focused. I am also planning on shooting some a couple of shorts now that university has finished to keep my mind on point and have continues involvement with the industry.
To be in a better position for employment should beef out my showreel with some new pieces, focusing on the acting and overall aesthetics of what I’m putting in it.
Id somewhat familiar with the Arri Alexa camera and but I definitely need to become familiar with the RED cameras as they seem to be used quite a lot in the industry, yet university has given us no training on them at all.
Unfortunately, I have realised that to become a director at the level I wish to be, it is going to take many years and a lot of hard work. No one will trust a random person to direct their production which has cost them ridiculous amount of money, which is why I am going to have to slowly build up a name for myself with in the industry, in order to gain the trust of investors and producers. Something that is going to affect my industry is Brexit, after leaving the European union we lost the MEDIA / Creative Europe funding, which means the British film industry will loose over 100 euros’ worth of funding also unfortunately British content will be much less attractive to European broadcasters however this doesn’t bother me to much because I specifically wish to make stereotypical British content, and that markets its self.
Threats
There are a lot of people I my desired industry and there are a lot of people who are Justas good as me, but luckily, they are not me. They will not posses my director’s traits, my tricks, my methods and my personality and these are vitally important things to my desired job role.
I am very lucky in that technology will never threaten my prospective position because my selected role is based on opinion, in fact it is the most defining element of directing, until artificial inelegance is created a machine will have no chance in doing my job. I need to be able to work closely with people, I need to evolve with them and understand what kind of person they are and how to motivate them to get what I am envisioning, this cannot be done by a computer because it cannot truly learn and respond to a situation.
Directing has obviously change in the way of the rules and regulation you have to adhere to with filmmaking, however the actual act of directing people hasn’t changed since the early days of the 1930’s ‘talkies’. People still require and will always require to be directed by someone who has an ultimate creative knowledge base of the project, someone who can make decisions and can evolve to the situation which ever way it goes.
Directing in vital to the film making process, essentially you are creative god on set, the role takes up all of your attention and efforts, therefore I don’t need to worry about my job being combined with any others in any downsizing efforts. One person is required and always will be for my desired job role, it is essential to any production, a set with out a director is a ship without a captain.
My role is subject to many internal conflicts, mostly centred around the actors and the personalities clashes. The main issue I ever have with film making is the people aspect, unfortunately actors as a breed are impulsive and melodramatic, due to me being an essential people wrangler, I have to deal with and overcome these problems, sometimes with the help of the crew but often on my own.
If I have done wrong or even if I haven’t I will be respectful and try to be as understanding as possible. The most useful piece of information I have learnt when dealing with actors is that if they are insistent on a scene going how they want; you shoot there take to plicate them. However, you always ensure you get at least one take the way you envisioned it, because after all, you are the director, not them. You must always remember to be calm and composed when dealing with any situation and remember that people are only getting stressed because they want to make a good film, so you have to remember that at the same time as making them understand that they are not the director, they can play these games with you but ultimately, they will loose.
Brexit is in full swing at the moment, as I listed above, it will have big implications on the British film industry but at the same time it will also create a bigger space in the market for downtime as people will have to be working harder. People like to work hard and play hard, this future time of stress will ultimately result in people wanting to chill out, and film is one of the biggest forms of inside chilling.
Hopefully who ever I get a job with will give me constant work, it is in the industry I chose so therefore will undoubtedly enjoy it! As no production is unlimited in the film industry, unlike television, I will be constantly being faced with new subject matter and projects I can sink my teeth in to, and as they say, ‘variety is the spice of life’.
In the case of sudden employment, my showreel and accompanying CV will be strong enough to ensure that I can find work. There is a lot of people in the industry, however I am lucky that I posses an Avant-guard nature, as this way I make a lasting impression. My odd nature mixed with my high quality showreel and good CV will hopefully lock me down employment.

Letter of intention
Dear Sir or Madame.
My name is Camilla Winqvist and this is my letter of intention as I am applying for the bachelor in Graphic Storytelling at The Animation Workshop. You can find my online portfolio here: https://camillawinqvist.tumblr.com/ My reason for applying might initially sound like a mundane one, but there is no other way to put it. In short: I love art and want to spend the rest of my life doing it. I have previously dipped my feet in other careers, but time and time again I find myself beckoned back by the pencil and the sketchbook. Drawing and illustration have given me a unique voice to express myself, and if art is a language I want to be able to speak it fluently.   It all started when I was a kid. I remember the night where I lied down in the damp, cold grass in our backyard and looked up at the sky, as I often liked to do. But this was the first time I saw it. It had rained earlier that day and the smell of raindrops hadn't quite left the air yet, and I could hear distant shouting from our neighbours down the street. In that moment, I was dazed. Astonished. Somehow this speckled sky managed to make my own worries seem infinitely small compared to the deep, timeless darkness that expanded above me. That night this newfound curiosity about Earth, space, and everything in between, awoke. I started to observe everything around me, letting myself take it in, and then scribbling it down. The walls of my bedroom were covered with drawings of space, people, animals - anything I could think of. I began to write and create accompanying worlds for my drawings and I put the stories down in little notebooks. This is something I still do. I love creating my own worlds and trying to capture the peculiar little anomalies that already surround us. Reading this, you've probably figured out that I'm a bit of an astronomy nerd – which originally led me to the path of becoming a scientist. I initiated my studies at the physics program at Lund University in 2013, but even though I had been excited to start, I quickly figured out that something didn't feel quite right.
While everyone around me were entranced in their notes, listening closely to the professors words, I, on the other hand, was more captivated by his many different facial expressions - trying to sketch and get the right feeling of his hands flapping above his head as he tried to explain the intricate formulas written on the blackboard behind him. I just never felt quite at home. So I changed my whole plan. I took out all of my paints, bought new sketchbooks, and I drew. I drew every single day. I got accepted into Lunnevad Art College and after just the first few days I felt like I truly belonged.
I studied everything from pottery making, to colour theory, life drawing, and graphic printing. During our second year we got to choose what courses to study and we ultimately decided entirely on what we wanted to work with. I chose to focus on painting, and then later on, animation and illustration. I graduated from Lunnevad Art College in 2016 and have since moved to London and started working as a freelancing artist and part-time bartender. I've always been a huge fan of travelling and I'm truly enjoying my time abroad. Coming from the small, shy country of Sweden I'm amazed at the diversity and friendliness of people here in London. They're always happy to let you get to know them and that's what I truly enjoy when it comes to my bartending job.   As for my work as a freelancer I mostly do commissions for private persons. I have also made illustrations for a few different companies and I'm currently working together with an author to design and create artwork for his two main characters from his book series Sam Hain.
I have lots of experience using Adobe Photoshop, as it is what I am currently using for most of my artwork. I'm also very familiar with Paint Tool Sai. When it comes to video editing I have experience using Adobe Premiere as well as Sony Vegas and I've animated short films in TV Paint. I have novice knowledge of Adobe Illustrator and InDesign as well.
On the topic of my professional work I'm very inspired by current digital artists, an example of which is Lois van Baarle, of whom I'm a big fan. She's a Dutch digital artist whose art has been featured on the covers of several Wacom products, and she's done work for Blizzard, Lego, among others. Her art has an iconic style with inspiration from both comic books and Disney and you can look at any of her drawings and instantly tell it's hers. I want to achieve the same thing with my art. I want to develop my own signature style which makes my art instantly recognizable. I also love how she plays with colour. A toned down orange could be juxtapositioned against a neon turquoise or a soft gold next to a rich, deep, purple.
Another current artist I'm inspired by is Igor Artyomenko from Russia. He's most known for his work on the Banner Saga video game series and does absolutely amazing environmental paintings, as well as character designs. Again I'm a fan of his colours, although he uses a more toned down palette than van Baarle. Artyomenko's ability to play with saturation to create depth is something I admire, and I wish to learn more about colours so that I could use them in the same way. His character designs also leave me something to strive for. He has a definitive style to his characters but they always have something unique and interesting about them, and he has an ability to notice the small details that really make a character stand out. An animated series that I really enjoy is Over the Garden Wall, created by Patrick McHale. It is a short series, coming in at only ten episode at ten minutes each, but it is still a truly great one. It features two brothers, Wirt and Greg, as they are lost in a forest, or “the unknown”. The animation is flawless. The amount of detail they put into their characters and settings is astonishing. You can see the individual specks of dust floating around in the sunlit air by the window in one scene, and the characters are visually able to tell you who they are without even opening their mouths. The show not only features great visuals - the story also leaves just enough unsaid to keep you thinking, wondering. It's one of those shows that stays in your head days after you've finished it. Aleksandr Petrov is an animator I absolutely look up to. His short films, usually around ten to twenty minutes long, all look like moving oil paintings. You get mesmerized by the story, but not just the one told through words, but the one of how light contrasts the dark, how the colours interact, how the characters move, what their faces are telling us. My favourite of his films has to be The Old Man and the Sea, based on the story of the same name by Ernest Hemingway. The story is an all time classic and combined with the animations of Petrov this film is just breathtaking. Another film maker, and comic artist I'm a huge fan of is Satoshi Kon. He has directed films such as Paprika and Perfect Blue, amongst many others. He's an expert at blurring reality with fantasy. Especially in Paprika, which is my favourite of his films. The story is set in the near future and features a psychotherapist who uses a newly invented device that lets her enter the dreams of her patients. The editing in this film is like no other, just the scene transitions alone oozes of creativity, and Satoshi Kon is a master of composing beautiful scenes. A lot of them have become so iconic that they have been reused in other popular films – Inception and Black Swan being just a few examples. I love how Satoshi Kon can find a way to show you what's happening without actually showing it happen. For example, there is this scene in Tokyo Godfathers where an old man is dying. He is surrounded by windmills that are all turning at a constant speed. As the windmills are slowing down and eventually stop you realize he has passed away. As much as I'm learning by watching and reading great books and films, there are things to be taught from the bad ones as well. Not only should one learn what to do, it's equally important to learn what not to do. Gaming is a big hobby of mine and the Fallout game series is my all time favourite. However, the latest addition; Fallout 4 by Bethesda Game Studios, left something to be desired. Claiming to be a role playing game, you start the game off as either a father or a mother trying to find their infant child out in the post-apocalyptic world. As much as I appreciate the story element, this completely removes the ability to create your own character and choose who you want to be in this game. As the game progresses you realize that the choices you make throughout the game have little to no impact on how the story plays out and it feels like you're going through a written script instead of actually being a part of the world.
Another thing that can truly lessen a work is uninteresting characters. Twilight by Stephanie Meyer is a great example of exactly this. At the end of the book all you have learned about the main character is that she dislikes the rain, and that she's clumsy. Never do we learn why she feels the way she feels or why she wants to do the things that she does. I've always been of the mindset “simple stories, complex characters,” and this book does not live up to that standard.
To expand on this, I also want to talk about stereotypical characters and predictability. I recently watched the pilot for the live action series Supergirl, and only a few minutes in I could already pinpoint what the major characters personalities would be like, what their relationships were and how their story arcs would play out. This is something I try to avoid at all costs in my own work. I love thinking of new ways to tell a story or discovering unique quirks and backstories to give my characters. I want to keep people wondering, pondering, and questioning what will happen. To make them feel like they just have to turn to the next page.
As I'm finishing up my letter I would like to allow myself to dream for a bit. In the future I would love to get the chance to make my own full-length comic. I think it encapsulates everything I love about art. Storytelling, character creation, world building, telling my stories using colours, expressions, movement, and composition. I would get to utilize my whole range of creativity and that thought sincerely excites me. I would also love to work with concept art and character designs for games and films. Storyboarding is also something I find really intriguing.
I think there will always be a place for graphic novels, even in the future. As 3D animation is becoming more and more popular more people will find comfort in actual drawn images and stories and I hope I get to be one of the people who creates them. If I were to get accepted to The Animation Workshop I would finance my studies using student loans from CSN. I also have money saved up if needed. Thank you for reading my letter Best regards, Camilla
