Smash Bros. - How fast the hours I have on this game went from 20 to 180 should tell you something.

Nintendo in general - I love Nintendo. I always have and I probably always will.

Worldbuilding - I’ve been doing this in such a specific way for so long that I just feel kind of empty without a world in my head. Hopefully at least one of mine can become an actual piece of media. Though, I have my other blog for this, so don’t expect too much of it over here.

Writing - As in, creating fictional stories. Any other kind of writing is 👎 in my opinion. And my creative writing is kind of garbage, so don’t expect me to make it public and tell you about it anytime soon.

Pokémon - Ah, yes, the longest of Buddy’s known hyperfixations at four years straight, five years total. How much I care for the electric rat varies from day to day, but I’m pretty sure I’ll always like the franchise.

The Legend of Zelda - Or more specifically, the Breath of the Wild subseries. I beat BOTW in four months, which is a record time for me. I’ve beat the Wind, Water, and Lightning Temples in Tears of the Kingdom, but nothing beyond that, so no spoilers, please.

My Singing Monsters - Ah, yes, the fourth longest of Buddy’s hyperfixations, at 16 months. Though I’m not hyperfixated on it anymore, I still try to log in every day and the occasional song gets stuck in my head.

Plushies - I like the idea of owning plushies, but I feel like I’m wasting money on them because I never do anything with them.

Bugsnax - I really like this game, I totally recommend it if you’ve got a spare 30 bucks.

Minecraft - Ah, yes, the third longest of Buddy’s interests at two years. I like Minecraft and everything, but I kinda stopped keeping track of updates around after the Nether Update. Remember when Update Aquatic was the new cool thing? Good times.

SCP Foundation - I used to be annoyingly obsessed with this fictional organization a few years ago, but now I’m less interested. I’m trying to get back into it, though.

Digimon - Ah, yes, the second longest of Buddy’s hyperfixations at three years straight, four years total. As much as I love this franchise, I’ll be the first to admit that I know nothing about it. I only finished the first season of the anime (which I don’t remember because it was years ago) I watched and thoroughly enjoyed, but didn’t finish, seasons two and three, and I lost interest in season four when I saw that the Digi-Destined didn’t get partner Digimon. I also finished Fusion (which I also don’t remember because it was more years ago).

Splatoon - I’ve only ever played the smallest amount of Splatoon 1, but I’m hoping to rectify that this September. Hopefully there’s just as much, if not more time in between Splatoon 3 and 4 than there was between 2 and 3.

Fire Emblem - I started gaining interest when I realized that I knew literally nothing about Fire Emblem, especially compared to the other 1st party Nintendo games. I’m specifically interested in the 3DS games and more specifically in Fates; yes, that Fire Emblem Fates. The one with Corrin in it. The anime swordsman that nobody likes.

Game of the Year 2024

Going through my beaten games posts, here’s what I finished in 2024.

Of these, I’d put Stardew Valley, Chained Echoes, and Vampire Survivors on the top of the list, and Dawntrail at the bottom. I’m honestly not sure which is #1! Probably VS...? that hyperfixation was real & I rarely experience something like that.

I also replayed through the Trine series with Majoracle and my brother. We played 1, 2, and 4. We’ll probably get 5 in 2025. We also played through Hammerwatch and most of Borderlands 3, but didn’t finish before our PS+ ran out. The PS+ autorenewed for my brother even though he’d taken off his credit card, because he had used Paypal to buy something during the sales and PS immediately jumped at the opportunity to charge him another way. (total BS!!!). We will probably go for a 3 month sub to finish up sometime and then say “adios Playstation” forever.

Other games I didn’t finish:

Triangle Strategy – I nearly finished it! But came to the conclusion I wasn’t enjoying it and kinda hard stopped.

Final Fantasy Tactics – because I wasn’t enjoying Triangle Strategy I was inspired to play the classic. I got to that battle in Chapter 4 at the ruins with Celia and Lede and then Vampire Survivors happened and I just didn't get back to it.

Dragon’s Dogma 2 – Majoracle played this constantly, so I kinda got burned out even though I myself wasn’t playing it.

Pokemon Brown – a romhack. I think I just don’t have patience for romhacks. I picked it up after watching a video on romhacks and seeing it had my boy Pidgeot on the cover haha.

Long answer: I closed the ask box over six months ago and I'm pretty sure all I've posted both here and on AO3 in just as long is about Thai dramas so,,, I think it's pretty self-explanatory.

I have a lot of requests answered sitting on the drafts but tbh, the hyperfixation just isn't hyperfixating anymore and there's no telling when it'll come back, so who knows when I'll post them, if I ever do. I had to empty out my ask box cause over 50+ requests I never got to were piling up, it was overwhelming af and I knew if I ever answered them, it would be in a LONG time.

Maybe, if the Yakuza hyperfixation returns, I'll come back to them in the future. Thing is, the chances of that are very low because I have no way to know if it's gonna be like Ace Attorney (a hyperfixation I go back to every once in a while and that never really goes away) or Fire Emblem (something I hyperfixated on for a long while but once I lost steam and was no longer interested, that was it and I never came back to it again).

hmmm hard to say definitively but probably not anytime soon? the last characters that i got this fixated on were chrom and robin from fire emblem awakening. that was years ago and they still occupy a space in my brain. a smaller one than they used to, but i still like them a lot.

it's unlikely that my level of submas hyperfixation is ever gonna spike back to where it had me drawing them every day for over a month but i do still like them a lot and want to draw them again. eventually. haven't really felt up to doing art lately though.

Unicorn Overlord and Tactical Minutiae

So, back in august, I got sick enough to be laid out for several days. Not covid, thankfully, but equally as debilitating, and when I'm sick, I tend to hyperfixate on video games, and my girlfriend and I had just gotten a great, big pile of new games for our birthdays (which fall around two weeks apart from one another). One of those games, the one that I played the most while in a haze of cough medicine and snot, was Unicorn Overlord, a brand new tactical RPG from developer Vanillaware.

I was already a big fan of this developer for their past hack and slash games like Odin Sphere and Muramasa: The Demon Blade. So to hear that one of my favorite developers was making a game in one of my favorite genres, I was really looking forward to this. And lo and behold, it's really good, a very nice fusion of ideas and systems from series like Ogre Battle and Fire Emblem, both series that I really, really like.

At first, however, I was worried that the game was going to be a bit on the boring or more automated side; the overhead view of the battle sees you summoning your units to the field and then commanding them to move to a place to either capture strategic locations or engage enemy fighters. In combat, you have no control over how the battle plays out when it's happening, you're just watching your units and the enemies spend passive and active points to attack each other until both sides exhaust everything they can do, and whoever's left standing, or has the most percentage of HP left, wins. Repeat until victory.

Yes, you do have control over who is put into each unit, so I thought that the primary strategy was just going to be figuring out how best to build balanced, reliable units that could stand against most enemy combinations. Build cavalry units to take out basic infantry, focus on high accuracy units against flying or scout types, that sort of stuff. And for a few hours, that was as deep as it got, and it worked fine for those few hours, but I was worried that my interest was going to wane the longer the game went on.

But just as I was starting to have that worry, the game introduced a new mechanic now that I had enough characters to create a decently sized army: the tactical menu. Every character has a number of active and passive abilities in combat, and they learn more as they level up. These can be fitted with a bunch of stipulations on how and when they use certain skills. Like, when I say a bunch, I mean a BUNCH.

You can make it so they will prioritize using certain moves against or on specific unit types. You can make it so that they ONLY use that move on certain unit types. You can make it so they will only use an ability when an enemy or ally is above or below a certain HP threshold; when they have a certain amount of AP or PP; when other characters perform certain actions; Whether it's daytime or night time, it's ridiculous how much control they give you over how a unit will act in combat when you have no control over them. You can assign up to two stipulations per move and those stipulations can also override how the move generally works, i.e. only triggering at the end of combat, or when an ally is attacked, etc.

It's amazing how specific you can get with it, and yes, that does run the risk of making a unit a bit too specific to be generally useful, so I mostly kept to just using the broader, more basic stipulations, and I generally didn't even have to do that. After that point, the game started to auto-assign specific tactics based on a unit's class and what they were best at. The most I would have to do would be to tell my healers not to just start healing the moment that a unit dropped below 100% health because that wasted a lot of the healing potential. But the option to fine tune was always there, and I did do a lot of experimenting and fine tuning as the game went on.

The good news is, at least for the difficulty I played on (normal), the minutae of doling out various tactics to every single unit isn't entirely necessary. Your opponents, for the most part, won't use any tactics beyond the basic ‘hit whatever’s directly in front of me' strategy, so you have the advantage there, and while, yes, not using the tactics menu at all will put you at a disadvantage, the combination of the game automatically assigning certain things to new recruits, and a helpful ‘optimize’ option in the menu if you don't want to deal with it yourself, means that you can largely ignore the more intricate parts of the tactics system of this game if you really want to, or slowly push yourself into it more and more as the game goes on. It's not strictly optional, but you can downplay it if you don't want to get too deep in the weeds.

Really, what blows me away the most about it is just how many options it gives you to control your troops in battle without actually controlling them. None of the other systems in the game attempt to be this deep, not that they have to; the overworld pathfinding works fine, but I do wish I could make micro adjustments here and there without having to completely redirect my units, the rapport system is very easily exploited when you get access to taverns, and the deliveries and town rebuilding system is very simple and basic. That isn't to say that they're bad systems at all, they serve their function well and help to add upon what is a very nice, intricate battle system, but you compare all of that to what you can do with your unit's various behaviors, the synergies you can put together between specific attacks and buffs, and it all comes together amazingly well. 

While I don't plan on replaying the game too soon (it's a long game after all), I do want to see how higher difficulties push me to use the tactics in more in depth ways, but the fact that it isn't all encompassing on lower difficulties keeps the game accessible to even those who aren't very familiar with this genre of game. I hope to see more games that give you the option to tinker and fine tune how things work like this in the future, I think it's a really fun feature that a lot of strategy games could use to add some intereting depth and replay value to their tactics, especially if interacting directly with your character's actions is somewhat limited.

Silly Game Time: Who are some of your favorite magician characters? And what do you like about them?

They can be of any class or variety of magic-user (wizard, witch, sorcerer, warlock, healer, druid, etc.), of any race or species, so long as using magic is *primarily* their thing in the story. Not just something they do occasionally, but something that is a major element of their role and their identity.

OOOOOOH BOY-! THIS WILL BE LONG! (And possibly involve a lot of Final Fantasy).

First of all, possibly the best example-

VIVI! From Final Fantasy IX! He's just a little guy and I love him for it! Condemned to die young (as he's made basically from pure magic) but determined to live his best life! Vivi is nothing but a sweetie that always sees the best on everyone and everything, he must be protected at all costs. On that last note: his sibling relationship with the protagonist, Zidane, is DIVINE! I really have a soft spot for these.

Cereza/Bayonetta: She's such a fabulous Girlboss. She went through so much trials to be the person she is (or at least is during 1-2, since 3 is a different Bayo as far I'm concerned but- uhhhh I won't get in that can of worms since I haven't played 3 yet) and I honestly love her for going from timid, meek, helpless little girl to the most powerful Umbra Witch. She had good genes ofc, but all that would go to nothing if it hadn't been for her hard work.

Quina (again, from Final Fantasy IX): They're no thoughts, head empty, eating only... which is how they gain spells, so... are they hungry for food? Are they hungry for knowledge? Maybe both? We shall never know as Quina is a riddle and I love them for that, their frog hyperfixation, and their love language being giving food 👏 such a mood.

Soren from Fire Emblem: he's a prince, he's the dragon protecting the tower, he's a damsel on distress, he's an orphan, he's actually not an orphan, he's definitely gay yet pseudo-flirts with the merchant girl to get these sweet discounts and gets away with it bcs home girl likes being flattered, what is there to not love Soren? He has always been of my best units in my every Radiant saga playthrough, I'll forever remember when he killed a buffed up golden tank unit with a staff. Much like Bayonetta, I love how Soren grew from a miserable little lost kid barely surviving on the streets to the master mage/tactician that he's now, he fought hard to have his happy ending at the side of the man that gave him a will to live and he's such a Girlboss for it too.

The Wizards from Terry Pratchett's Discworld book series: they're batshit insane and wasted all their points in intellect completely forgetting they needed wisdom too. They're the Wizards in Arby's before it was even a meme.

Ace from Final Fantasy Type 0: I like that he's not such a typical mage even though his movesets are 100% around magic, you won't catch homeboy with a staff, he's got cards to channel that magic. My poor son was basically trained (not to say experimented on) from a young age to have a great magic potential and be the great soldier his mom wanted him to be. I honestly like him better from the complementary content (novelization, mobile game, opera omnia, yadayadayada) as there, there's a much more deeper focus on how much messed up it was, though IG that's also why I like Ace so much, despite it all, and despite trying to keep an stoic bravado, he's just a kid, he wanted to learn to sing and be happy with his chocobos.

While I like many other things such as Stardew Valley, Chainsaw Man, Splatoon, Fire Emblem, Cult Of The Lamb, BTD/TPOF, and so on, I have a very big soft spot for the Call Of Duty games and it’s characters! Military related things have always been one of my biggest hyperfixations growing up as a military brat* myself, so when I got into the games earlier this year, it just consumed my autism and I love it.

*Military Brat: A child who grew up/grows up with in a family where one or both parents are in the military. In my case, my dad is in the Army and I have many memories of growing up on base and going to the armory. Some good, a lot terrible, but I still fondly remember my childhood.❤️

(Call Of Duty totally doesn’t help me cope with my daddy issues and childhood trauma pffttt you’re crazy-)

This is actually a fun question. Vulture is the call sign of one of the characters I’m writing! I’m still in the works of making the character, but the way she got her call sign is simple: She’s known for looting bodies of dead enemy soldiers like how vultures eat their food. Also, I also think it’s just a badass call sign lol.

A/N: Decided to convert one of the fics I made during my month without Wi-Fi into a reader-insert! This is rather self-indulgent since ABO is a massive weakness for me- It's a little short since I don't like writing long pieces on my phone, but I thought some folks might like it! I also think it's a travesty I haven't written anything for FE:3H at all on this blog, so here's a Yuri fic because I think he's neat! I'm also spiralling into my Fire Emblem hyperfixation again since I bought Three Hopes recently. I know I'm late- ;-;

It’s a blur, simply put.

This whole, strange relationship is a blur.

It’s touches on skin at night, only ever at night- when the Goddess could not see beyond the thick fog, with only mist-filtered moonlight faintly lighting patches of hair and wrinkled clothes. The reflections dance upon exposed skin and floats high on breathy calls and sighs. The highs sing like angels in the dim of night, and those tingly, pleasant feelings bloom like delicate flowers upon your sullied flesh. 'Heavenly', you think vaguely to yourself, before the guilt and scorn of feeling unworthy settles in the afterglow.

It’s hot and cold. Unrelenting heat boils beneath your skin and sighs like steam at his touch, and for just a moment- you're complete. Like the final stroke of a brush against a littered canvas. Entangled as one, it feels like sweet relief that calms the burning inferno inside for just a few minutes. The kettle cools and it’s like the sip of fresh lemonade on a summer’s day, and you're parched beyond belief... But all too soon that euphoria slips away and it’s so hot- too hot again. There’s an aching itch that burns like an addiction, and no matter how much you scratch- it never stops. There is no respite. This heat, this supposed "cycle", only sleeps for what feels like a few minutes. There is no cycle, only a merciless craving that digs its cursed fangs deep into your biology.

It’s a deep-set ache. When you roll to your side, Yuri is gone. Like the whispers of the wind, he’s temporary and loose like grains of sand. A fleeting pleasure, like the haze of a debauched party you can't remember anymore. The only "mark" of his presence is the phantom touches upon your skin. The sickening warmth pooling already in your gut once again that yearns for more, but just a little quieter than usual. When you breath in hard, like the shaky exhale before a sob, you regret it. It reeks of your antidote. Your medicine. An Alpha. It smells like him. Instead, you take a shallower breath; one that strains to calm the throbbing in your chest.

That relief seldom stays, yet the relationship remains all the same.

You would be a fool not to know this wasn't good for you anymore. That this was hurting you. You don't know how much longer you can last, staring into soft, purple eyes that remain guarded even in such a vulnerable position. It's so hollow. That smile. Those sweet nothings. The gentle touch caressing down your body with the mannerism of a lover, but the method of a stranger. It's so painfully empty.

But when Yuri rolls his hips, those thoughts fuzz and blur. Your brain can't think straight when he touches you with such precision and practiced ease that almost made your chest hurt- if you tried to think about it too hard. Stirring up your insides only numbs your head more, body arching into Yuri’s as his tongue laps at yours. It tastes so sweet to be consumed by him, as you lick desperately at his lip to get him to do it again. To consume the rest of your thoughts and drag you further into the abyss. There's this satisfying ache that heat suppressants can’t provide. That being alone can't provide.

In the grand scheme of things, who were you to ask for more in this? You are an omega. Yuri is an alpha. It was only natural you would feel drawn to him. Those desperate, intrusive feelings- that unerring need to be loved by him- they're nothing more than the cruel urge to be fucked until you couldn't think anymore. He didn't even need to help you, but he does. That... That's good enough.

It’s lonely. It’s scary. It’s feverishly cold. It’s bitingly hot.

You curl into yourself, panting beneath the covers as you call a name you don't quite realise you did. You don't know why you did it when it finally registers. As a new presence paces quickly across your room's floor, you can only cry for that name again- borderline pain flickering through your heightened nerves.

Lavender. It smells like lavender and honeyed fruit; it's overwhelming yet comforting. It spins your head pleasantly, in a way that makes you whimper that name again. More slick runs down your leg as arousal spikes deep in your core despite your confusion. Your hand reaches below your waistband, needing to feel something now you decide, as you paw at your already hard cock and slide your hand down to feel the wet trails running down your thighs.

Ah…

You need him again.

When that blur of purple embraces you again, those loud, frightening, confusing feelings dampen. You can ignore your problems as you cling on to him- pulling him as close as possible, listening only to the sound of Yuri mumbling your name. Hands gently push your own away, electrifying your senses as he thumbs at your tip. Simmering in his touch, you gasp and groan when he spreads your hole open with long, dextrous fingers- delicate yet teasing. It’s so easy to lose yourself when he looks at you so kindly like that. When he talks to you so sweetly like that. When he holds you so tenderly like that. Even if it's all fake, in the maddening pit of engulfing heat and heady lust, it’s so easy to pretend that even for just a moment…

Pokémon Reborn Screenshot Let's Play: Chapter 27

So, within the last week, I’ve given myself quite a new hyperfixation. I really like Fire Emblem, and someone out there made a Fire Emblem TTRPG system, and it was really cool, and I wanna run an adventure with it. However, knowing the way my brain works, I was worried that my fixation on Fire Emblem would kill my motivation to play more Reborn, as has happened with many games I still need to finish. 

Luckily, as you can probably gather by the fact that this chapter actually exists, that didn’t happen. So far, despite how eager I am for TTRPG action, I’ve kept to my work routine for this Let’s Play- will it stay that way? I have no idea, but for right now, let’s just be glad Chapter 27 became real in a timely fashion.

Now, I’m sure there’s bound to be plenty of excitement in this upcoming section. But there was a lot of excitement in the last chapter too, so let’s remind ourselves of just what tomfoolery happened. 

Xera runs through Beryl and Jasper Wards in order to find Cain after seeing the incident in the Underground Railnet, running into him just outside the Reborn City Police Department. He leads her into the building to discuss everything further.

Xera finds Amaria working on a computer inside the building. Apparently, Cain ran into her after escaping the Railnet and gave her the item Anna threw to him: the data chip from the Ruby Ring. Amaria finds herself unable to decrypt the files, but claims someone else is about to arrive to help. To Cain’s shock and confusion, Ace then walks into the room. 

Amaria explains that after Xera and Borealis escaped Rhodochrine Jungle, she confronted the woman known as Agent Grass- or, more accurately, Lin. Lin soundly defeated her in a battle, then brutally attacked her in order to obtain a pair of items she has, the Sapphire Bracelets. However, Ace intervened and opted to have Amaria captured instead, to Lin’s dissatisfaction.

As a result of their interference, Ace was fired from Team Meteor, and as such they helped Amaria escape with the Sapphire Bracelets. According to Ace, the new Systems Manager is a woman only going by “T” at the moment. 

Having made a deal with the police and having Amaria’s full gratitude and trust, Ace gets to work decrypting the chip files. After doing so, the group discovers plans for three currently active PULSEs, some information being new to even Ace. The PULSEs are located at Apophyll Beach, the Byxbysion Wasteland, and Reborn City’s Peridot Ward. 

Cain is still concerned for Anna and the rest of the kidnapped children, but Ace assures him that the children are not to be harmed, as per Dr. Connal’s orders. Additionally, Amaria points out the importance of the safety of the general Reborn public, which is at risk with a PULSE in Peridot Ward. With few other options at the moment, Cain and Xera agree to help bring down the PULSE in question.

Ace leads the trio to the PULSE’s location: Blacksteam Factory. They use their magician prowess to help Xera and Amaria access an entrance on the roof while helping Cain separately. 

Inside the factory, Amaria and Xera are swiftly met with resistance, but Amaria is able to make quick work of the Grunts (with a little help from Xera). However, running into the main room, they find themselves surrounded by even more Grunts, who were surprisingly quick to mobilize.

After Xera puts her trust in her, Amaria uses Deliverance the Lapras to create an opening in the Grunts for Xera to run through. Amaria is now surrounded, but she insists that Xera go and shut down the PULSE while she holds off the mooks.

Down the hallway, Xera runs into Ace, who soon reveals themselves to still be working with Team Meteor; while they were removed from their position of Systems Manager, they were given a new job instead. By gaining Amaria’s trust, they were able to delete the information off the Ruby Ring data chip (although they still saw things they did not know about before, which they still wish to investigate) and split the group up, leading to Cain’s capture. They then capture Xera as well by…pushing her onto some trapdoors in the hallway. 

Xera plummets into a room full of caged Pokémon from Team Meteor’s Day-Care scam. With the help of these Pokémon, Xera is able to put the guard to sleep and destroy the iron bars trapping her in the room, allowing for her to escape and make her way back into the facility proper.

So yeah- we’re still in Blacksteam Factory, and Ace is still a double agent, and not the kind of agent these guys thought they were! Well- okay, I never completely trusted them, and neither did Cain or Xera, so their betrayal came as very little shock. If anything, I was more surprised they revealed their true allegiance as quickly as they did, like- the raid had barely started, and they were already like “aha, I tricked you all”. If they were gonna reveal something like that, I thought it might have happened closer to the PULSE location.

So, Cain’s captured somewhere, Amaria might be in a similar plight (although, given how strong her team is and she was just fighting Grunts, maybe not), we’re sealed inside the factory, and Xera is left on her own to deal with all this, as usual. But Xera’s team is strong in its own right, so we can…probably handle this! I’m 90% sure! Let’s get into the action and see if those odds are accurate.
