Once in a lifetime, forever in a lifetime

A/N: Okay so im sorry it took me such a long time to sit down and write a second chapter, but the story continues, I hope you like it :)

Summary: Childhood friends with maknae line, coming-of-age kinda thing all the way through college, that will eventually include the hyung line as well, but i wont spoil anything for you, can get hardcore later on, i will put some trigger warnings, when i get to it;;

very many angst in this chapter, +a hyung line charcter appears yay

You woke up to the sound of your alarm abruptly beeping from under your pillow. Your head was pounding with pain and you barely opened your eyes, blindly moving your hands around the bed to find your phone. When you did, it took around five minutes to assimilate the time and to remember why and where you were.

Right.

In your apartment. But you barely remembered how you got here. There was a party yesterday night for the beginning of the first university semester. And you drank. Oh boy, did you drink. In your mind flashed images of a number of cups, half-naked boys and girls sleeping one over another on a couch. So college parties weren’t a myth.

You lifted up the bed covers to get up and head towards the bathroom, stumbling. You looked like a mess because you haven’t even bothered to take of your makeup, so you decided to just take a shower. The hot water ran all over your body and soothed you tense muscles and your headache. After what seemed like half an hour, you propped a foot out of the shower, and then another one and wrapped a towel around your body. You stared at the reflection in the bathroom mirror. You face was still puffy, but it wasn’t too obvious because you had lost a lot of weight during the summer and the stress for college applications. You had also cut your hair short the moment you left Busan and it was now barely reaching your shoulders. Maybe the only thing that had not changed about your appearance were your eyes. Still a color too light for most Koreans, since you were a mixed child, with specs of green in them. Almost all kids throughout middle school made fun of you for them. Good thing Jimin was always there to tell them off and assure you of how beautiful he thought they were. Jimin…

You shook your head to get rid of the painful thought of him. When you stepped out of the shower the cold air hit you as expected, and you prepared to sprint to your warm room. What you didn’t expect however, was bumping into something on your way. Someone. You looked up and saw a boy in the middle of the hallway. More importantly, a boy you didn’t know. You were so surprised, your brain could not formulate any words, so you just stood there like a wet cat for about two minutes, before the boy started laughing. Not just a little, he was bend over, arms wrapped around his stomach as if he had seen the funniest thing in the world. Or had he?

“Excuse me…” you finally decided to speak out. “Stop that!”

“Stop what?” the boy straightened up, wiping away a few tears that had formed at the corners of his eyes.

“Making fun of me! And who the hell are you?”

“Oh wha- you don’t remember me?” his eyes were now seemingly sad.

Wow. Great actor, you thought.

“Should I?” now you were starting to feel a little bit nervous after the oddness of the situation wore out and the realization that there was a stranger in your apartment hit you.

The boy let out a heavy sigh, as if you were a five year old and he was trying to explain to you and two and two makes four.

“How about you go and get dressed up and I’m going to tell you all about it?” he suggested heading back to the kitchen.

“I’m sorry, how dare you tell me what to do, on my own ground?” you were not liking his attitude.

He didn’t even bother to answer when he disappeared around the corner of the hallway. You stomped with your feat for a few seconds, pondering if you should go after him in that same second and smack him with something, but you soon realized that any action would be better with clothes on, so you feistily turned around and slammed the door of your room.

No more than five minutes later you were out in the hallway again, hair still wet, wearing the first sweatpants and shirt you grabbed out in the wardrobe.

When you turned around the corner that lead to your kitchen, you were prepared to shout, but what you didn’t expect was to see him putting a stack of golden pancakes in a plate on the wooden table and another two plates next to them.

You stumbled back to take a better look at him. He was fairly tall and had lean, but well-built body. His light brown hair was messy and strands were sticking out of everywhere, which much to your annoyance, made him quite charming. His face was thin, but whenever he smiled, his cheeks were forming cute dimples and his eyes were glowing as well. He was handsome, that you admitted. You were so lost in your thoughts that you didn’t realize he caught you staring.

“Quit standing there, come over and let’s eat” he motioned with his hand. “I don’t bite” he added a smirk.

“Quit being a fuckboy, and I might” you scoffed, but still approached your seat, since you were very hungry.

“That was uncalled for, Y/N”.

You scrunched your nose and his comment, but soon enough that grimace was replaced by a look of content, because these pancakes… they tasted like heaven.

“I’m glad you like them” the boy let out anther smirk.

You looked at him straight in the eyes.

“Wait, how come… do you know my name, and I don’t know yours?”

He looked at you and crooked an eyebrow.

“I told you my name at least a few times yesterday, Y/N?”

“Well… I don’t remember it. Or you, or anything really” you suddenly felt a little ashamed by your actions even though you couldn’t remembering any of them.

“Okay, well. First of all, no we didn’t sleep together”.

He knew what you wanted to know. You let out a relieved sigh, taking another bite of the pancakes.

“Thanks to me though, because you were really going for it”

You choked.

“I- I don’t believe you” you squinted your eyes.

“Believe whatever you want. I don’t know when you came to the party, but we met” he chuckled, “we met because you spilled your drink on my shirt, then continued drinking and flirting, so at the end I had to ask where do you live, because there was no way you could go home alone-“.

He looked at you. You were blushing, even if you had no proof, his description of you sounded accurate.

“Then I took you here and you… um, you cried”.

You choked for the second time.

“You fell and started to talk about some… Jimin, Jangu or something, I don’t know you were slurring. Anyway I couldn’t leave you on the ground, so I took you to your room.”

The boy threw another look, just to make sure if you were following his words, hence the info was a lot to take in.

“At that point, you started kissing me and taking of my shirt, which I have to admit was probably the highlight of our meeting, but I had to stop you and soon after you fell asleep”.

You were once again left without words, or any speaking abilities whatsoever.

“I could have left, but see I’m a nice person, I stayed to make sure you’re alive by the morning” he smiled at you toothily.

When you didn’t respond to his smile, he dropped his act and looked at you curiously.

“I’m sorry. For that. You didn’t have to stay, or cook” you said dryly avoiding his demanding eyes.

“I don’t mind” he stood of the chair.

“The way I see it, you’re a really lonely here and you were apparently hurt really bad in the past. I am too. I didn’t stay out of pity, I stayed because it’s nice meeting someone who goes through the same thing as me.”

You lifted your head this time. He was an honest guy, you had to give him that.

“Anyway, its 10am, which means if I don’t go now, I will be late for my lecture” he moved quickly through the living room, taking his leather jacket of the couch.

“I’ll see you around Y/N?” he smiled once before closing the door after himself.

You found yourself smiling. You embarrassed yourself, and yeah the guy was kind of ticking you off, but there was also something about his demeanor that intrigued you. You would see him around.

You would see… who around?

Suddenly you jumped from your chair, and headed towards the door of the apartment and rushed down the stairs. You caught him right when he was closing the door of his car.

He also saw you and stopped in his action. His eyes looked at you once again, this time expectantly, waiting for you to ask the question.

“What’s your name?” you breathed out.

He flashed one of his half-smiles at you and his eyes glinting with content.

“Hoseok” he said and closed the door, leaving you on the side of the street, with his name in your mind.

After that you came to realize that Hoseok, or Hobi, how most people called him, was also a medical student like you in the university, but was a third year, while you were first year.

He was the first friend you made there. And probably the only real one.

At the beginning, it didn’t seem like anything changed for you and Hoseok. The only difference was that you went out together more often. Much more often. You would sneak out of the apartment long after midnight and Hobi would wait for you outside on the driveway with the same car he had left with on the day you met. You would spend the night often in more than two or three bars. You would enter in through the veil of darkness, smoke and hasty music, look around. Get free alcohol from the often illegaly drunk waiters and would leave before anyone noticed your presence, or absence itself. That slowly turned into a routine every weekend. You never really focused on what you were doing or where you were going. It was like you were drugged on the experience and it kept you alive. After all you understood each other in some type of way that was not possible to be described with words. Or maybe you gave each other something that you hadn’t received from anyone else before. It was perfectly balanced…until you fell in love with him. It was not right away. It was unhurried and unexpected. You were slowly starting to notice a sparkle light up deep inside you every time you saw him. You would notice the way he walks, slightly tilted to one side, the way he talks when he hadn’t slept the night before, studying for anatomy exam, or the way he talks when he has drank three cans of different types of energy drinks to keep him up because he couldn’t miss out on the new material for the pathology exam next week. You would notice the way he would throw his arm out of the car window and his hand would trace the wind as if he was flying, as if he was catching something through the wind that fueled him with gasoline to continue driving the car itself. You would notice the way his light brown hair falls into his eyes when he was looking down at you or when he fell asleep on your lap. You would notice the way his colors shifted constantly. You didn’t know when you fell in love. It was slow at first and then all of a sudden with no warning. Just as easy as falling asleep.

He noticed you too. He noticed the way you slowly got used to him. He noticed that you slowly stopped flirting with every guy you met on Sundays just to distract yourself. He maybe wondered why. He noticed the way your shoulders would fit perfectly in the crooks of his arm when he put it around you (which was fairly often, since that was the way you would normally walk through campus as if no other mechanism worked). After that he noticed the way your eyes would light up when you were looking at him. He would notice the way you watched him when he drives. And even though, you didn’t know, he would feel your fingers in his hair, when you thought he was deep asleep on your legs after a long night of studying the parts of the human heart. He knew you were in love.

You could probably go on like that forever, your dynamic was just the right amount. However, life was not gonna go easy on you.

It was a sunny day in May and you and Hobi were outside preparing for your last exam for this year before the summer. You were both laying on a picnic blanket, your head propped on his chest, while he was reading out the steps for conducting an appendectomy, and you were staring at the clouds. As hard as you were trying to focus on his voice, you ears were occupied with listening to the even sound of his heart beneath you. You stayed like that for a while, taking in the warm breeze, when you were distracted away from the sweet sound of his heart.

You couldn’t point by what right away, so you kept your eyes closed. Soon enough though the familiar noise became too loud. Your eyes fluttered open, hands were sweating now, and your own heart sped up its rhythm. It had been a while since you had been reminded of their voices. It took you another minute or so, to realize that his laugh was too real to be in your head and was getting closer and closer by the second. You stood up, startling Hoseok in the middle of his sentence.

“What’s wrong Y/N?” he asked already used to recognize when you were uneasy.

You didn’t answer, just moved your eyes around the field in panic.

“Y/N?” Hobi called out once again, grabbing your hand.

And then you saw them. Propping a blanket a few meters away from you. Their faces were also changed. Taehyung was placing a heavy load of books on the ground and was talking about something to Jungkook. His eyes were the same, the smile was the same, his face only a bit more mature and his frame was much larger, as if he had grown an extra pair of shoulders for the last year. You tried to hear what they were saying.

“Do you think she is here somewhere?” Taehyung asked.

“I don’t know, she should be” Jungkook frowned, looking at the opposite direction of you, searching for you.

He wasn’t changed much either, only his face had nothing to do with a child’s face anymore, making him more handsome than when you two dated.

“Why won’t you try calling her again?” Jungkook asked turning to the third boy.

“How many times do I have to tell you, she blocked my number about a year ago” Jimin’s voice rang in your ears almost bringing tears to your eyes.

You almost audibly gasped when you focused on his face. The first thing you noticed clearly was that his chubby cheeks from before were gone, his jawline and cheekbones now becoming well defined in the sun. He had lost at least 10 kg from when you last saw him. His hair was no longer black and poorly styled with gel, but blond and his locks looked like they were made of cotton. And piercings. A few of them actually. Without moving your head, you could see all the girls in radius of 10 meters scanning him up and down. And you looked just like one of them. You couldn’t take your eyes off of his.

“Is that them?” you heard Hoseok’s voice right next to your ear, his lips touching your skin lightly.

“Yeah…” you gulped and barely said.

Suddenly Jimin sensed your glare and lifted up his eyes, meeting yours right away, stopping in his very movement. His face had now became paler than the buildings behind him. Jungkook and Tae noticed his distress and followed his gaze to you. But you couldn’t look at them.

After what seemed like 10 years, Jimin stood up and you found yourself doing the same. But as he was taking a step towards you, you took one back, suddenly feeling the salmon sandwich you shared with Hoseok for lunch coming back. Now all three of them were slowly approaching and you stumbled back and would most certainly fall if Hobi was not behind you to hold your waist.

“Where do you want to go, Y/n?” his voice was stern.

He repeated his question a few times, before you could sum up an answer.

“Away” was the only word you could say, barely keeping the sandwich in your stomach.

Hobi needed no repeating, with one hand still on your waist and another grabbing yours, he lead you away from the grass field, into the building, giving you a few seconds without Taehyung, Jungkook or Jimin in sight.

“Hey, look at me!” he said propping you on the cold marble ground.

“Y/N if you want to finally tell me what happened between you and them, now is the time, if you want me to help you!”

“I-“

“Y/N?” you heard Jimin’s voice calling your name and suddenly everything turned upside down.

You weren’t feeling the cold and warm waves from a few seconds ago, and you weren’t sweating anymore. You stood up just in time, before the faces of your childhood friends appeared behind the walls of the hallway.

You stood motionless, waiting for them to approach, every seconds making it harder for you to keep your calm. When he was just a meter away from you, Jimin smiled.

“Hey” he simply said and scratched his head.

You took a step forward and then another and Jimin spread his arms, welcoming you for a hug. But you had other thoughts in mind. Before he knew what was happening, you took one last step and the loud sound of a slap filled the corridors.

The next thing you knew, was Jimin was folded in half, holding his cheek with one hand and you weren’t finished. Everything in your sight had become a shade darker and the only thing you could focus on was Jimin and your fists that were landing one after another anywhere they found fit.

“You asshole! You absolute piece of shit! How dare you come here after so long and…” you took a step back to take a break, so you could breathe.

Jimin couldn’t say a word, so he had just squatted on the ground with hands over his head, waiting for another round of punches. And you were about to give it to him, but Taehyung cut your way in an attempt to stop you.

Which failed.

“And you…” you muttered. “How fucking dare you!”

Your focus shifted on him now and he soon followed Jimin on the ground. Hoseok didn’t even try to stop you. After he had gone a year with you, seeing you suffer because of them, he was enjoying the scene a little too much. Which could have continued for much longer on its own, if finally Jungkook hadn’t decided to step in.

You lifted an angry fist once again, but it didn’t land. You looked up to see that the boy, who didn’t seem even a bit amused, was holding your wrist.

“We get it, okay? You can stop now!” he growled and picked you up in an instant, to which you made a sound of displease.

“Hey, be careful” this time you heard Hoseok’s low voice from behind you, and Jungkook slowly turned his head towards him.

“And who the hell are you?” he asked cockily looking at the man up and down.

Hoseok made another step towards the younger man, but you cut him in his track.

“It’s none of your business, who he is! And no, it is not enough Jungkook. For what you three did, it’s not even near being enough”.

“Y/N” Jimin spoke from behind Jungkook and you could hear the hurt in his voice.

Not enough.

“Why are you here?!” you screamed once again directly at Jimin.

“I am so sorry Y/N. For everything I did, okay? I’m sorry?” he was afraid to look at you in the eyes.

“I didn’t ask you if you were sorry, I asked you what are you doing here?”

“We came here for you… we want to fix everything” Taehyung was now standing up and his beagle eyes were practically pleading forgiveness.

But you couldn’t. Not now and not like that. The intensity of the situation suddenly hit you and you finally felt the tears that were threating to spill from your eyes.

You quickly turned on your heal and sprinted out, not allowing them to see how hurt you still were. You ran until you reached the parking lot of the university. Now knowing when Hoseok had followed you and got to you, you just fell in his arms, that wrapped around you securely, letting the tears make wet spots on his shirt, and his lips kiss softly your head.

My story for you my friend

Hey friend,

Sharing my story with you is scary and gives me a lot of hesitations, but you deserve to know. So I’m just gonna start from the beginning if that’s alright with you.

I was diagnosed with depression and anxiety when I was about 13 or 14 years old. I am now 19 and continue to struggle with it. I started my medication when I was 14 I believe. It has changed so much since then though. I’ve been on at least 3 different depression medicines since I started. The first one didn’t work with my body and the second one made me gain a ton of weight, so I wanted to get off that as soon as possible since I’m pretty self conscious of my appearance nowadays. The medicine I’m on now seems to be working perfectly, so thumbs up to that.

I’ve always been a really happy and outgoing kind of kid with loads of confidence. But somewhere in my early teens I noticed a lower self of steam and less love I once had for myself.

I had a really hard time in high school with my depression. I went into freshman year as I told you before, confident and HAPPY. I had so many friends and was so well liked by many. I made the varsity cheer team and had a boyfriend and didn’t have many insecurities at all.

Sophomore year came and I fell behind in school and got dumped by my boyfriend. I was crushed. My ex was a super well liked type of guy who played on the football and basketball team. (I was super into popularity and labels back then, so I needed to add that in). Because of this breakup I shut down and isolated myself from everyone. I lost all my friends and I never understood what I was doing so terribly wrong in my life. Some kids from my high school would call me and/or leave nasty text messages on my phone.

I went to the doctor to get myself checked out because I knew I was depressed. They ended up diagnosing me with a learning disorder, called Executive Function Disorder, as well as some OCD, Anxiety, and Depression. I felt so defeated because I knew that there was something wrong with me, but NO ONE would listen to me. I started to doubt myself and see my struggles as "not real" or "just in my head". I started believing people when they’d tell me I’m being a baby or I’m too sensitive or I’m overreacting. Girls that I thought were friends would tell me I’m being rude or starting drama for sticking up for myself when someone would deliberately try and hurt me.

Through sophomore and junior year I struggled with rumors and horrible, petty girls and even guys that made it their mission to hurt me. I got made fun of for things that were spread about me having to do with a boyfriend I had freshman year. It is no secret that I made some mistakes with guys in the past, but I was the only one taking the heat for it.

I tended to my pain through cheerleading. I stuck with it because it was truly my passion and I loved with everything in me. To this day(even though my body can't physically bend/move like that anymore) I have cheerleading and new groups of girls every year to thank for being a huge support system for me.

Junior year was the hardest, most lonesome year I’ve seen in my whole life. I remember the rumors were at its peak during this year. I remember one particularly really harsh rumor about me going around my whole school that I had Herpes because I was out of school for a week. I was actually in the hospital for depression and almost taking my life. This was especially hard for me because the ENTIRE school believed it. One of the teachers told her class "Be careful because I heard one of the Jr. girls has herpes." A girl from my team had this teacher for her class and told me that she announced it in class. From that day forward I walked around Saint Viator with no self confidence and a frown on my face.

I’ve got one more rumor to tell you before I move past this horrible subject. But hey, you needed to hear it’s much as I needed to tell you.

There was one Jr./ Senior party that I had no desire to go to nor got invited to over winter break of my junior year. I was in Canada on vacation I think...I can’t remember where I was, but it was out of the state at least. The next week I get back to school and a lot of people I would smile to in the hallway would ignore me. I started noticing those same people were unfollowing me on social media and subtweeting me. Basically their party got busted and the first person they thought to blame was me for reasons I’m unaware of. This one really pisses me off because all I can think of is someone telling one person it was me and it becoming a “thing” that I busted their party. Well for those arrogant children that thought of me in my absence, thanks???

Thinking about everything its really hard to write this out for you because I don't think the emotion of the situation and what I felt is really getting through, but Im trying to summarize this the best I can, so bare with me, friend.

I had no girl friends junior year other than my team. I was alone and at my worst. I so desperately wanted to transfer. But I didn't. But, my troubles were only the beginning.

My parents have been married for 28 years, a week ago, my dad was an alcoholic and my mom is a self centered, reputation freak. My dad went to rehab in 2004 when I was 5 years old and my brother was 4. He was gone for months. He didn't tell me any of this until I got to highschool because it is obviously a heavy subject.

My parents have fought for as long as I can remember and it haunts me to this day. I always used to put their relationship on my back and felt like I needed to protect my dad from my moms abuse. I have nightmares and flashbacks of my mom physically and verbally abusing my dad. (There is a lot more to this story that I don’t have the time to write about at the moment, but if you are wondering I’ll do a desperate story on that)

One night over the summer I vividly remember my mom sending me a text that was meant to be sent to my dad while I was out with my two best friends. The text was basically ripping my dad and I apart. She said that I'm a loser just like my dad and I will never amount to anything. It hurt to hear those words coming from my own mother and I lost it. I called my mom’s parents and her siblings and basically told them how she's been treating my dad and I. I went into panic mode and cut myself and overdosed on drugs and basically did everything to numb the pain of my moms hateful words. But none of that worked because I started believing it to be true myself. (This would be whole other story if my dad was actually a loser, but he is the most selfless person I have ever met and I'm not just saying that because he's my dad, but I really mean it when I say he works so hard everyday for his family and deserves the best. He is unhappy, but he wakes up every morning at 5 am to workout for an hour and half and then goes to work until 7 every night and comes home to no food or hello from his wife. He is the most incredible guy and he needs recognition for it.)

Senior year I decided to stop talking to my mom and stop chasing after the girls who were so cruel and horrible to me. I decided to make friends outside of my school and hold my head high while I was still at Viator.

I started seeing a therapist sophomore year and really kicked it up a notch once I was a senior because I knew I had to get better before I went off to college. My medication was stable and my health was great and I was doing ok. I still sat in the bathroom at lunch, but I was getting by. Ever since then I’ve been somewhat stable. Ive had boughts of sadness don't get me wrong, in fact the past few days have been a low for me and thats why I’m talking to you right now, but for me college is what saved my life and I'm extremely thankful my dad was able to send me to such a great school.

With my mom and I, we are working towards a relationship, but taking it slow. Living away from home has been just what I needed to be able to deal with this relationship healthily. So I guess we will see what happens for my mom and I. For my parents, I'm not really sure where they stand. All I know is that I've learned through years of therapy that I can't take on all the pressure from a relationship that isn't even mine. So I've stopped worrying about them for now and have decided to focus on myself.

As for me, I’m alright. Mostly numb to all this by now, but it’s definitely still part of me and my past and I’ll have to lug it with me the rest of my life. And that’s what it is.

What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger, I guess.

Thats basically me and my luggage I take with with me through life. I wanted to finally talk to you about this and let you know who I am and why I am the way I am. I feel like I've left it in the dark for too long and I’m done hiding it.

"I am always willing to learn from my mistakes and learn better, more efficient methods of getting the job done" will suffice. 6. Can you work under constant supervision? this is long and stupid. i just don’t have anyone to tell this to so i’m vomiting my problems into the tumblr void

getting ready to go back to school after a year and a few months off is making me think of my first couple of years at SC. i made the stupid mistake of looking through my facebook pictures and seeing all of the people i lost contact with. i honestly miss so many of these people but it’s been years and i think it’s time to let go. i hardly go on facebook these days and i’ve hardly posted anything. but most of the posts and photos on my account are from people tagging me. over my entire medical leave, i have posted one picture. a selfie. i’m wearing lipstick for the first time in ages and i put time and effort in my appearance. only i wasn’t going anywhere. i was just in my room as i always am. social media is stupid and only fuels my feelings of loneliness and sadness. it’s weird to see how little i’ve lived this past year. i maybe left the house once every two weeks. most of the time to go to therapy or to run an errand. i’ve been holed up in my room, on my laptop, putting in too many hours on this site and building nothing for myself. but i’ve been this way for so long i don’t know if i can leave it. going back to school will make me so aware of my body, the space it takes up, people looking at me, my fatness, my hairiness, my ugliness. acquaintances coming up to me asking why i’m on campus and having to explain i didn’t graduate in 2016 like i was supposed to. meeting with college administrators and proving to them i’m not a liability anymore. i’m so scared. all of my friends have graduated. i have 2 friends in town but they’re done with college. all of my problems seem so small and self inflicted. i’m making them worse in my head but i can’t stop crying and i can’t sleep anymore. i’m in this weird space of desperately wanting to leave my parents house to escape my room and to escape their abuse and to live as an open lesbian again. its been so tiring being here. when i went on medical leave i knew it was going to be tiring. going back to school isn’t ideal either but i only have one semester left and i need to truck on and finish. every session my therapist asks me what i want to do after i graduate. what are my goals? ambitions? i don’t have any. i’m not talented. i’m not that smart. i’m ugly and immature. i want a job and a place to live, food and some money to start paying off my loans. post-college future terrifies me. pre-going back to college future scares me. i’m scared now. and im tired. my brain and emotions are running this never ending circle. no solution in sight. the solution was supposed to be therapy, medication and rest. and those have helped. i seem like a totally different person now apparently. i told myself that at the end of my medical leave, i would be glad i did this. i would be ready. but honestly at the end of the day, i wish my suicide attempt was successful. i’m a mentally weak person, immature, who can’t handle these basic things. i’m not going to hurt myself now or the near future so don’t worry. i have things im looking forward to. upcoming dramas, packages on their way, skype dates with friends, my birthday plans in a month, the plants my friend is going to give me when i go back to school, my horticulture class, the new thai rolled ice cream place. i have to stop going back to that never ending circle, stop thinking small.

i’ve been so fortunate to have had a lot of good people in my life. to have a lot of good people in my life. so good that their absence makes me feel sad. college is such a weird time. my cat came to comfort me and im going to self medicate my shoving my emotions aside to watch a drama or movie or something

Yes, I’ve Been Hit by Students, But I Still Believe Suspensions and Expulsions Are Not the Answer

Betsy DeVos wants to end the Obama-era discipline guidance that addresses the over-suspension and expulsion of students of color.

Betsy DeVos is wrong. And I say that as a special educator serving high-need students, who has sometimes even been beaten up by my students.

As teachers, we have tried to get Betsy DeVos to listen. A group of Leading Educator Ambassadors for Equity, myself included, wrote to Secretary DeVos asking her not to remove the guidelines about school discipline because of the civil rights issues involved. I was particularly concerned because those guidelines also protect the students I work with, who have special needs.

The secretary has not replied. In that absence of leadership, we must take the conversation to the public.

Let’s talk the bigger picture. Congress has just given billions in tax cuts to the richest 1 percent in the history of our country, but it has never bothered to fully fund the decades-old law that ensures children with disabilities receive a proper education (the law is called IDEA, the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act).

The federal government has never given the assistance promised to the school districts. This means school districts don’t have the money to hire adequate staff—teachers, counselors, social workers, nurses—to handle all the students with special needs.

Instead we pay for it in the form of teacher attrition and medical bills from injuries. Worse, we are paying the highest price of all, the lifetime costs to our students, when we don’t help them address their behavioral challenges.

For those of you who think a kid with behavior issues should be kicked out of school, I ask you to ponder this: When you leave school you enter general society. Do you want our youth entering society without the skills to control their behavior? What is the benefit in that? The only people cheering on that idea are the owners of private prisons and the elected officials they have bought.

Keeping that violent kid in school means there is a chance to teach them better behavior. If we do not do this while they are young and teachable, then what life are we condemning them to?

I’ll tell you. If that kid has the disabilities and needs that my students have, then they will live in an institution or a lock-down group home. They will have little to no freedom. They will not have jobs. We will pay for every single thing they do and for every person in their life who has to support them.

If that kid is a general education student, suspensions and expulsions can mean missing too much school to graduate. The punishments can lead to a high dropout rate. So that student, who clearly needed our support, is now condemned to a probable life of poverty. Even military service will be out of their reach unless they can get a GED. Many will end up in juvenile detention or jail. On average, jail costs us $31,000 or more for an inmate each year. In some states that can rise to $60,000 a year per inmate. And it’s all taxpayer money.

Is it not cheaper to spend $100,000 a year on a counselor and a behavior specialist who can help 50 kids, rather than spend $31,000 a year, 50 times over (which equals more than $1.5 million a year) for each of those kids in jail or juvenile detention? You don’t have to be a STEM teacher to see that money spent to address behavior in childhood is a fraction of what will be spent on the consequences of unaddressed behavior problems in adulthood.

District Leaders Should Be Marching in the Streets

School board members and superintendents should be marching in the streets to demand the full funding of IDEA. Instead, too many of them have forgotten they are the champions of the children and have become Ye Who Kill by a Thousand Tiny Budget Cuts.

If you know people who work with children with disabilities in your district are being hurt because there simply is not enough staff to keep them safe, then you must step to the higher ground. You must. Yes, you will take some heat. I guarantee you though, heat for a good fight is honorable. Those burn marks will show the world you stood up for the children in your care.

Your teachers will stand with you. I will stand with you.

Do you hear that? I have shared my stories of being assaulted. I did not flinch when I shared them. I did not hold my punches. Champions don’t hold their punches when their work is to better the world for their kids.

It’s Time To Speak Up, For Ourselves and Our Students

When I told my story of being beaten by my students, I quickly had hundreds of messages from teachers, paraeducators and some health care workers sharing stories from their own careers. The stories I heard were not far from the same stories you would hear at a shelter for battered women. Assault, after assault, after assault, each one breaking off another little piece of my heart.

I have no shame in the tears I shed reading your stories because I am mourning for how many times I heard, “I had to quit teaching,” because of the physical abuse. And even worse, how many of you were told to be quiet because it is what you signed on for.

To every paraeducator who got notice their hours were being cut and to keep insurance meant losing another fifth of your paycheck, I get on my hands and knees and thank you because not only are you the punching bag in the classroom, you are the punching bag of the budget cutters as well. I am ashamed when I see the job you do and know that your paycheck is a fraction of mine. I once had a coworker paraeducator who had his finger bitten off. He returned to work. He didn’t give up on those kids. That’s badass. You are all badass.

To the nurses and mental health care workers, I hear you loud and clear. “That’s part of the job” is not cutting it for you either. Your cuts in staffing have left you vulnerable, too. Sure, nurses get hit. They get hit because there is no staff there to keep them from getting hit.

I have one ask for all of you, fellow badasses in the struggle. Take a minute this week to call Betsy DeVos and tell her not to rescind the Obama-era guidance on discipline. Demand funding for IDEA. Show your elected officials the cost of investing in a paraeducator now is a lot cheaper than paying for jail for a lifetime.

Why I aborted 2 very wanted pregnancies

April held several anniversaries for me. The anniversary of an unrealized due date, the anniversary of an ended pregnancy, the anniversary of my birth40 years ago this year. All three of these dates gave me pause to reflect on the choices Ive made.

Choice. The word feels big and comes up often lately. When faced with my strong-willed 3-and-a-half-year-old son, Ive learned to give him only two choices or else Id lose my mind. On a larger scale, Im considering leaving a career Ive pursued for over two decades and whether or not to add to our family. Such choices are par for the course as we grow and enter new phases in our lives.

But more significantly, Ive been thinking about the right to choose in the debate over abortion, which is not only threatened under the Trump administration, but also often misunderstood. The nuances that can go into making a choice to end a pregnancy are often unseen, unspoken, and never casual.

Unfortunately, my husband and I were faced with this choice. Twice. We terminated two very wanted pregnancies. To put it bluntly, Ive had two abortions.

And as our government tries to strip us of our reproductive rights, I am reminded how lucky I am to have the financial means and to live in a state where laws didnt prevent me from the choices I made. My abortions left me heartbroken, changed, and grief-strickenthat is indisputable. But everyone should be granted those choices. Those are choices Id still make today.

Itd be easy to peg me as your typical pro-choice advocate. I grew up in a liberal household. Feminism was at the core of my progressive private Los Angeles high school education. I went to a super hippie-dippy college where grades were for eggs, not people. But while I was taught to think critically about various perspectives, I was primarily surrounded by politically and socially like-minded individuals. To be honest, I never questioned whether I was pro-choice. I just was.

And then I visited a Body Worlds exhibit. This particular show featured skeletal muscles, nervous systems, and healthy and diseased organs to demonstrate the complexity of the human body. It also included a wall of 42 embryo and fetuses preserved in a glass case.

These embryos and fetuses were humanized by Body Worlds. I saw their form and I saw their potential. I saw them as life. (Not so dissimilarly as I saw the meat that I no longer ate when I became a vegetarian 10 years prior.) I remember very clearly, standing over a nine-week embryo in a glass case thinking that I believed in choice, but couldnt imagine making such a choice.

Fast forward 10 years.

I became pregnant in the summer of 2011. In September, I went in for the routine 13-week NT scan, the ultrasound that assesses your babys risk of having chromosomal abnormalities. That day, we found out that our babys nuchal fold thickness was outside of the normal range.

We sat with the genetic counselor as we gave our histories (nothing outside of the ordinary) and was given a primer on statistics and chromosomes and karyotypes and various horrifying conditions. At that point, we still didnt know exactly what it all meant for our child.

As we drove home, my husband, through his stifled tears, said to me, We cant think of it as a baby. I remember feeling aggressively defensive at my husbands reality. I had stared at the doctors screen and saw a body. I had stared at my belly and saw it swollen. Of course, it was a baby. That was never a question for me.

Test results confirmed that our baby had a significant chance of having some kind of severe abnormality that could be fatal or would likely cause him to suffer. We consulted doctors, got second opinions, and endured more testing. We were candidly, though not casually, advised by doctors to terminate and try again. And at 14 weeks, thats what we did. We made our choice.

I grieved, I processed, I sat on the couch in therapy and tried to find meaning in my experience. I planted a letter in an olive tree that I had written to our son, explaining to him why we made our decision, and that it was ultimately a decision made out of love.

I became pregnant again, at the beginning of 2012. This babys due date was exactly one year after we terminated the previous pregnancy. I found solace in that kind of synchronicity.

But of course, when I went to my routine 13-week NT scan, I was still anxious.

As I lay on the exam bed, facing a flatscreen monitor with just my name and my estimated due date, the technician asked me, Would you like me to turn the monitor off after you confirm the information is correct?

She was asking if I wanted to see my baby. Without hesitation, I told her to leave it on. I did not take my eyes off him. Here was my baby alive and living inside of me.

Soon, though, my husband and I would be faced with the same godawful, painful decision that we had made just months before.

This time around, my babys NT scan showed that his nuchal fold thickness measured twice the normal size, putting his life at even more risk than our first. My husband and I searched for a medical explanation or any scientific data that could give us an understanding as to why this happened to us not once, but twice. I scoured medical journal articles and reached what felt like the end of the internet looking for affirmations that I could carry my baby to term and not feel like I was putting my child at a significantly abnormal great risk by bringing him into the world.

We sat with the facts, the data, the expert opinions as well as second and third and fourth opinions. I had a CVS, a microarray, a full counsel on recessive testing. We had ultrasounds with specialists at both Cedars-Sinai and UCLA. We reached out to various genetic and prenatal and neonatal specialists. We made it our job to find an answer.

Despite the extensive research on my pregnancies and all of the testing, every doctor we saw was at a loss to explain why this developed with our babies twice and couldnt come up with anything beyond compassionately telling us it was two strokes of bad luck.

We made our choice. Again.

I think about what our story would have looked like under different circumstances. In another state. With abortion restrictions. With fewer means. Fewer resources. What that trajectory could have looked like in a parallel universe. And it makes me realize that while others might not agree with our choiceand I certainly can understand why some do notit was our choice to make, not our governments. It was philosophical, it was personal, and it was ours.

The Oklahoma House of Representatives passed a billin March that would ban all abortions based on genetic abnormalities. In other words, Oklahoma legislators believe that the agonizing choice that my husband and I made as a couple, both times, should have been theirs to make. Theyd get to make this choice for us even though they would do nothing to support the aftermath of that decision: setting aside funding for his medical care, holding our hands while he underwent a lifetime of treatments, alleviating our pain if he died not long after birth.

In Kentucky, there is only one abortion clinic left in the state. One in 40,400 square miles, and the governor just tried to close it. In that scenario, I think about the big-picture trajectory again: If my husband and I lived in Kentucky and we didnt have a car or have the funds to get to the closest clinic and subsequently had a child with severe and costly life threatening medical issuesa child whom may or may not have been even able to survive after being bornwhere would we all be now?

But in what could be the most damaging legislation given my situation, the Texas Senate just passed two obscenely restrictive bills: One outlawing dilation and evacuation (D&E) procedures, the safest and most effective abortion procedure for women in their second trimester and what doctors used to terminate my second pregnancy; and another called the wrongful birth bill that would make it legally OK for doctors to lie to their patients about fetal abnormalities so they dont get an abortion. Yes, doctors could make the choice to withhold my babys health issues from my husband and me, while we went on in ignorance, unable to have a choice in the future of our family.

The list of laws and states and circumstances that hinder choice goes on and on.

While it may seem like what the Republican Party wants to do first and foremost with such restrictive legislation is prevent women from getting abortions, that motive is only secondary. Many studies have shown that women arent going to stop choosing to have abortions under strict lawstheyll find other, unsafe means to terminate their pregnancies that could put their own lives in danger. At its core, these laws are about controlling women and perpetuating feelings of shame and guilt for making choices over their own bodies.

Women have long lived with the burdens of shame; nevertheless, we have persisted. We do not shut down after making the choice to have an abortion. We do not go through with the procedureand never feel again. I have never felt so much pain, anger, sadness, grief, and confusion as I did after choosing to end my pregnancies.

Worse than the pain I felt in their absence, though, would have been not getting to make that choice at all. And to clarify: I understand why others would not make the same choice. But being forced into a life based on a doctors whim or a legislators personal ideology, being robbed of making the best personal choice for my family, would have been a pain I could not endure.

After that 13-week appointment, I decided to make the most of each day with my son while he was still in my body. We went to the beach. I showed him the ocean and the sand. We ate Indian food, Italian food, Mexican food, Mediterranean food. I read to him. I talked to him. I sang to him. I wrote him letters daily. We listened to a lot of Florence and the Machine. I explained everything that was happening to us as best as I could, as we went into each ultrasound appointment.

After considering and reconsidering all of the information we had collected over five weeks, we made the decision to go in for a D&E the day before my 35th birthday. He was 18 weeks. I woke up on my birthday longing for him and missing him terribly.

While my husband and I grieved together, I felt oddly alone in my experience. Simply put, there was a literal voidinside of me. Unlike my husband, I had pregnancy weight gain and pain and cramping and bleeding and hormonal mood swings that were constant visceral reminders of my baby whose life we chose to end. And so I took the pain pills prescribed with wine every night as I watched countless episodes of TLCsWhat Not to Wear to escape all the pain that was too hard to feel.

Because he was a baby, my baby, we had him cremated. Until we came up with the right spot to place his ashes, I carried him around with me. Some might think it weird or dark or sick, but I couldnt fathom leaving him home alone, and so he came with me in my purse to my appointments, my errands, and my work. We eventually found his spot.

My husband and I eventually tried again seven months later. I quickly became pregnant and gave birth to our son in August 2013.

I would be lying if I said I did not often see his two brothers when I look at him. All three are part of my fabricour son is here because of them. And one day, I plan on telling him about his brothers and our journey. A journey and a family we wouldnt have without choice.
