hello this is very silly but I managed to accidentally vote on your poll.. I am not on your SWTOR server I just follow you because I love your OCs and like your content. Truly my brain just turned off and I hit a button. I'm so sorry but I hope it makes you laugh. I voted yes btw so you can factor that into the final results. Again I am so sorry I have no explanation
You're fine, you're fine, Nonny! ♥ (and you're also very sweet! I'm glad you like my dorks, even if, erm, the blog has recently been overtaken by BG3 brainworms)
I was kind of just joshing with you guys in the tags, as I know there's like this instinctual impulse with a lot of people when they see a button to PUSH THE BUTTON. It's right there, taunting you with it's incomplete state. Something something human nature.
I do wish tumblr had an option where you could just see the results of a poll without having to commit to any answer... but then, would it be a true tumblr feature if there wasn't some awkward element of unintentional PVP involved?

Arise Story Poll Response
(poll for story opinions) (did you like the story as it was or not?)
Thank you all for your responses so far, and for keeping it civil in the tags and replies. As someone who is new to the Tales fandom (relatively; I picked up Arise the week it was released and have yet to play a Symphonia copy I picked up in March), there is a lot I don't know about the other games and the fanbase as a whole. Judging by what I'm seeing after a couple days of voting, my choice of "No, the story is not incomplete (first Tales game)" is very much a minority.
Granted, I'm considering it complete despite the flaws I've been seeing. I would've loved spending more time on Lenegis and seeing more of the consequences of our and the Helganquil's actions to the Renans, but clearly, the game developers had other things they felt they needed to focus on. (Either because of money or time constraints, but I'm not in the video game industry, so I can't judge.)
Your opinions have all been interesting to read and it makes me curious about how my own opinion will change as I pick up other games. I respect where you are coming from, as more experienced players who have played more of the Tales anthology, and I look forward to seeing the older games for myself.
(Play first, analysis second, to be clear. I want to enjoy the games, then pick them apart, much like I've done with Arise on my own. Going in with an analysis/comparison mindset first would just ruin the experience.)
For what little context I'm willing to offer for posting these polls, I had someone comment on one of my fics with an essay of a request. This commenter asked me to "complete" Tales of Arise by writing the "missing third act" of the game by giving the governmental reform a spotlight after Dahna's and Rena's merger, as well as touch on the problems that come with getting Dahnans and Renas to treat each other as equals.
I told them that wasn't in any of my plans for fanfics, but the essay of a comment rattled me enough that I wanted to see what other fans thought of the plot, hence my polls linked above.
(If others attempt to add to that comment thread, know that I intend to delete comments rather than add more fuel to the fire. I've gone from rattled to annoyed over the whole thing, and the conversation is done. Adding more voices won't help. Besides, you can bother me about it here instead, if you really feel a need to.)
Concerning Arise, It seems that most of you are more focused on how the world-building and the overall polish felt, as well as your opinions of the characters and how they interacted with the plot and each other for their development. Some people liked the story and the characters, and some people thought the story wasn't good enough to hook them and maintain their attention.
And that's okay! Not every story in an anthology is going to hold your attention the same way that your favorites will. Everyone's got their own tastes and that means our likes and dislikes are not going to be completely identical. We can all be fans of the Tales anthology, even if we have different opinions about the games that exist within it.
In fact, I doubt that my love for Arise is going to fade as I go into other Tales games. It's my first, and despite its flaws, I very much enjoy it. And I can see that others also enjoyed the game despite its flaws, or felt fairly neutral about it. At the time of this post, no one's taken up the third option of "I wanted it to be more like [insert Tales game here]," but I suspect that's because of the wording. Apologies; these are the first two polls I've made on Tumblr and I didn't mean to ignite tempers. Wanting a game to be like one you've played before is a very valid desire.
Honestly, your responses are making me relieved more than anything. Because it means that there are other, more experienced Tales fans who acknowledge the game has an ending, even if it doesn't satisfy some of the people who have played it.
(Besides, if we go by the standard Three Act Structure, Act 1 is basically Calaglia the Tutorial, Act 2 is the majority of the game on Dahna, and then Act 3 could arguably be just the final dungeon, maybe Lenegis for good measure. Unpolished and rushed as it was, this is what I see.)
Don't get me wrong, my opinions of the characters are different from some of you, but the noticed flaws in the latter half are something I will agree with: the last bit of the "second half" did feel rushed, and I wish there had been more to, say, Lenegis, to give the plot time to breathe before we got shuttled off to Rena. Maybe we could've met families of the Lords or something (except for Almeidrea's since she killed everybody for her shot at the title).
As a fanfic writer, a story with perceived flaws is something that I can absolutely work with when I have the inspiration to write. An incomplete one...not so much.
So, again: thank you for telling me your opinions on the plot of Tales of Arise. While I don't expect to make extensive use of this knowledge (at least, not in the near future), I hope the data is giving others something to think about, too.

// ► for the Funny Pizza Game
It's about an anxious Italian man who has to kill cheese
Tumblr media
//-I've given serious consideration to adding Vigilante to the muse list. Partially because writing Cowboy Speak is kinda fun, partially because his fight feels very Classic Mega Man, and partially because I joked about adding him once and the thought stuck in my head. Plus, you know. Pizza Land is on my mind a lot, as 60% of my Tumblr experience is now reading P.eppino And His Son Go Crazy Because Of Frogs KASJBCJABSKC
//-Honestly, the main reason I haven't acted on it at all is because I can't exactly pinpoint how he would actually. Feel about P.eppino if that makes sense? My immediate thought was that he would be neutral towards him after the game, but he does still show up during the boss rush at the end. Does he still think Peppy's a criminal? Does he realize he got tricked? A secret third option? I can't pinpoint an exact answer I think works 100%. No doubt in part because I probably missed/don't know some story things I probably should. I think about it slightly more than I probably should.
//-But I dunno! I think he's a really interesting idea for a boss fight, the whole. Getting tricked into fighting the MC. It could be an interesting perspective on the whole story to explore. Or maybe he just does funny cheese shenanigans and shows up randomly to collect his bounty again. Who knows! I sure don't!
//-If this ever changes and I do add him, I need you guys to bully him for me. Despite what I said about how his fight feels, it's the only boss fight I can never get down to a science and still lose it on like every other re-fight

an excellent post by tshirt, but let me add on to it, because... i thought it might be helpful for a subset of people! so without further ado...
TIPS FOR WRITING ESSAYS FOR PEOPLE WHO HATE WRITING:
so if you're anything like me, you actually don't enjoy the process of writing very much--but you want to have written. and more than that, you have thoughts in your head that you just can't stand having in there anymore, and the only feasible option is to write them out. and unfortunately, writing is just the best way of communicating and preserving ideas.
obviously you could make the argument that some part of us does enjoy writing... but that's honestly not relevant to get into right now. because at the end of the day you're probably experiencing frustration with getting your words out and not really enjoying the process for the most part. if that sounds like you, or sounds like it would be you if you tried to tackle essay-writing, here are some tips
make your writing into a Thing.
so you don't necessarily enjoy writing itself. or maybe it's difficult for you to enjoy writing when your writing is supposed to be some ambiguous, abstract, "pure" representation of your thoughts. now, with academic writing, the priority is information, clarity, and soundness. you may not enjoy it, but at least there's a clear structure and direction, and in cases where you're really just trying to drag yourself through it, a ready-made concept of prioritization you can fall back on. "i may not like it, but it does its job. i may not think it's great, but it's sound." with narrative and prose writing, it's similar. you know what to prioritize if you really have to.
but more than that, all these different modes of writing produce a clear "end result." there's nothing wrong with writing something academic and being proud that it sounds smart. likewise, prose should sound good. your writing in these cases produce an "object", and i mean that in a neutral way. being able to view your writing from a third-person perspective in this way is helpful for a variety of reasons, from getting internal direction to helping the flow of the writing, and most importantly if you hate writing, feeling like you're "making" "something" outside of yourself. because if you're writing an essay just for yourself, and not under the strict limitations of writing for school... that does free you from a lot of constraints, but it may also leave you a bit directionless and without a structure to cling to. combine that with the idea that your essay should reflect something deeply personal, or at least deeply "you", and it can be extremely easy to get stuck.
that's why tshirt's suggestion to make your writing into a bit is so good and genuinely helpful. this section has been a bit long, but what i want to emphasize here is to view your writing as an object you can appreciate from the outside, rather than dwelling on the process if you don't enjoy it. that can mean paying attention to making the cadence sound nice, prettying up the formatting, giving it a specific voice not necessarily your own, making it a parody, having a specific hidden composition goal in mind, etc. and on that note:
2. all writing is a stylization of thought.
this is closely related to the first point, and it's something i think about a lot.
if all writing is already inherently a stylization, why should you feel constrained in the degree or method of stylization? again, here i return to the idea of the bit. you're not actually writing an academic essay for school--though i will note that emulating academic writing has been extremely effective and entertaining for me personally. it's almost like a form of writing drag to me. anyway. with that mind, you can style your essay any way you want. can essay-writing be art? why in the world not?
writing may not be enjoyable in and of itself. but adding an extra layer on top that's amusing to you, and maybe you alone (though probably not!) can make the entire thing suddenly much more fun.
3. citations are good.
now, this experience may be far from universal, but when i was in school i was mostly relieved about being allowed to default to citations and just let someone else explain something for me. learning to process and integrate information is an important skill.... but not having to write something if you don't have to is great! when you hate writing. so citations are good in general, yes. but i want to speak here specifically about the idea of citing in the context of writing your non-school, for-fun essay--in particular in a fandom context, though not everyone who was interested in tshirt's post may have had fandom in mind.
simply put, citing your friends is fun.
here's something that happened to me. tshirt wrote an insane piece about a manga they read at my urging, and i wrote an equally insane (but in a different way) 20-page essay in response to it that was really about completely different things and yet that could not have existed without their first essay, and then they late wrote another follow-up piece to my follow-up.
this is the kind of back-and-forth that makes the fandom experience fun. and i cannot stress enough how much having those original ideas to build off of--or to be inspired by, no matter if only in part--helped me both in deciding to write my essay and in the actual writing of it. because trying to cover everything, to get all your thoughts on something on paper when "all your thoughts" is naturally an unending chain of associations between thoughts you've had throughout your entire existence, is not only difficult but deeply unpleasant.
citing someone--your friends, some random author you've developed a parasocial relationship with for the bit (i'm just subtweeting tshirt here don't worry), the writer that originally inspired you to write on a certain topic--helps alleviate that. the idea here is not literal "citations" like in academic requirements, but the idea of building on another's work, referencing something else. as in...
4. draw absurd comparisons.
yes, that 18th century writer was absolutely talking about your blorbo. i'm serious. for real. you should write that.
take yourself seriously. that's the only way to not take yourself too seriously. place yourself and your ideas on an equal scale to the most illustrious thinkers or famous writers of the past few centuries. apply iconic theories and frameworks to your favourite anime analysis. but also, that thing you thought or wrote about one series? apply it to another one that has no relationship to it whatsoever. again, i have to invoke tshirt's rule of the bit--but also, this is yet another way of giving yourself that external prompting and direction, and helping yourself enjoy everything about what you're doing that's beyond just the writing.
i can't tell you how much developing a certain framework writing my own essay changed how i engaged with other texts. this goes all the way back to point 1, but is also essentially what point 3 is all about. i turned my writing into a Thing and now even after writing it there's a Thing that i can take with me and use. and of course it'll be ever growing and expanding as you have new ideas. but even if you hate "writing", this part of it is genuinely delightful, because of course it's all about so much more than the act of putting words on a page.
essay writing helps you do these things because, of course, it's the best way to condense and organize abstract thoughts. and the best thing about it is that once you've done it once... you can just reference that going forward. i've realized that even with things like fandom analysis, it really helps you delve much, much deeper (with the side effect of making you look insane) into any given topic, because rather than having to backtrack and explain yourself all over again, you can simply... well, cite the previous work! and move along. this is how you and your friends can drag each other into an ever-deeper, neverending whirlpool of incomprehensible meaning-making.
ON THE TSHIRT METHOD TO WRITING ESSAYS IN YOUR OWN TIME:
i have had a couple people mention to me that they would like to write essays too, but they are a little out of practice. so i thought i should gather some scattered thoughts into one place. this is not a systematic guide. i am young and inexperienced and still working out things for myself, but this is my basic process and some things that have helped me, summarized.
my biggest single piece of advice is to write with your proverbial pussy. you are not writing for a grade so don't act like it. forget rigor, forget academic style, etc. read what you're interested in, and write following up on the threads that you're interested in. don’t sweat the details. just do you.
if you still need more advice..... here’s a long winded post.
step zero: if you have no clue what you want to say yet
read. and read a lot.
but be realistic. be kind to yourself. your attention is a precious resource, and it is getting eaten up by shit out of your control all the time. if you’ve had a busy day, you may still have the brain power left to read. i almost never do. lol. so make sure to carve out time on a day off, if possible. otherwise you might end up completely fried, reading the same sentence over and over, and ending up scrolling on your phone LMAO. <-- painful lesson also to this end, if you haven’t picked up a denser book in a while, start with shorter articles, especially ones written more recently. if your attention wanders, try getting a physical book instead. the most important thing is just starting things you’ll actually read.  i’ve seen a lot of people (and been that person) who was like. “oh i’m going to start with THE canonical text in a subject i’m interested in” which makes sense right? but that book is inevitably long and dense and convoluted and boring. you can come back to it later. this shouldn’t feel like a chore!
genuinely this is the most helpful thing you can do is just. read anything. it may be difficult at first (or always), but it is still the easiest way to engage with the foremost experts from around the world and the entirety of written history on any subject you are interested in. there’s not really a substitute to this.
note: you may say that people can and do come up with brilliant ideas independently of their access to written works. this is true! but if you are one of them, you should skip this section/post, because you already know what you want to say.  okay that was a little too facetious. let me revise: when i say that, without reading, it will be hard to come up with more complex ideas than what you have now, that isn’t necessarily pejorative. maybe your current ideas and impulses are original and meaningful and complex. if they aren’t, however, you don’t have to resign yourself to it.  your experiences in real life are the most valuable thing you can bring to the table, but it can be very difficult to articulate and contextualize them without community—whether that be irl, or the simple textual company of other writers. you can let other people help you and teach you.  basically, this is a long winded way of saying something extremely simple: reading is not the only way to gain knowledge, or even the best. but it is an extremely consistent and relatively egalitarian way.** **scihub and libgen and sometimes the public library are your friends. (my local library’s book coverage is spotty) who cares about piracy. LMAO.
you may surprise yourself by how nicely you fall into little spirals. you read one thing. and you are enamored with the way the author approaches their subject. so you end up reading everything else they’ve written, and then you start on the authors they list that inspire them in their interviews. maybe you just read one article that’s a little dry but it cites something else that seems far more interesting. read that next. and so on.
if you are struggling to read that’s okay. you have options. start a book club (or just get a friend who also wants to read more). if that sounds like too much work, pick a friend to keep updated on all your new facts. you just want to get used to reading something, and telling someone your favorite parts again. skim books. skip the boring parts. drop them entirely and find a more interesting one. no one’s going to quiz you. this is for your own enjoyment.
also important here: read books that make you want to write. sometimes this is because the methods and/or prose of the author are so exciting, you want to do something just like that. sometimes it’s because the content is so exciting, you want to say something about that too. sometimes they speak so powerfully to your own life, you want to tell people this is me!! i see this!! there are books i just enjoy reading, sure, and i do read them. but you know how, like, a good movie makes you want to tell stories too? good theory should do that too, in my opinion.
step one: you have some ideas now.
these ideas don’t have to be set in stone. but you should have an idea now of what you might talk about. personally, for me, i have two interconnected types of essay ideas.
interventions. this is like [tumblr voice] Why Is Nobody Talking About This. i see some sort of hole. maybe i know how to fill it, maybe i don’t.
free associations. basically i read one thing, or some analysis of one thing. and then it reminded me of another thing. and i’m like. i want to tease apart their connections, their similarities, and their differences.
there are more types of ideas, i’m sure. but these are the ones i consistently have. with me, the second kind is more common. very rarely do i find that my thoughts are that original. rather, i’ve found that one of my strengths as a writer is being able to make connections that other people haven’t made, or haven’t made in depth before. IN MY OPINION.
so i find it quite flexible. maybe i watch a movie, and it reminds me of my own life, because i think two women in the movie could be sad queer freaks. and i’m a sad queer freak. or it could be that i think scum villain could be analyzed through the framework of freudian psychoanalysis. you get the idea.
at this stage of the process, i don’t have a thesis, necessarily. but i have a couple phrases i’m drawn to. i have a bullet point or two. i have vibes.
to use an example from this blog, one of my friends hui once mentioned that that one fan image was going around again. we were going ughhh it’s victorian not chinese! together and they said “you should write a meta on it.” i wasn’t sure quite yet what i had to say. but i knew a couple things.
this is, incidentally, because i had done some research into chinoiserie before, because i had cited the zuroski book for a paper i had to write for an english class some years before on pride and prejudice and its use of descriptions of material culture, an essay that in turn was inspired by my random yet deeply felt conviction that jane austen hated me personally and wanted to kill me.  this is why i encourage reading a lot. i think.
to work on this stage, make lists. lots of them. i have a .txt file where i keep every essay idea i have. a lot of them are a sentence. or they're lists of books or theorists i think i could make something out of. or they're theses that feel true, but i’m not sure why yet.
it took me a while to get to this point. just like with writing fic, there was a period when i first started where i was like. i only have one idea. i’m going to write it, and then i’m never going to write again. and then i had just one more idea. after a while. eventually you will find you have so many ideas and the world is full of possibilities. it’s a muscle you have to flex. like reading. and telling people about what you’re reading.
actually, i feel like there was a step 0.5 here that i completely skipped.
step zero point five that i skipped: how to generate ideas
my very truly complete “first time writing something semi-academic that was original” (with a loose definition of the word original) was literally just me reading literary criticism of one book, and saying “i think this author’s thoughts can be applied to this other book” and found some textual evidence that supported that the process could be replicated.
this is like, writing with training wheels on. eventually i got better at it (see aforementioned chinoiserie essay. i hope you agree.). but that was a good place to start for me. it made the proverbial blank page less intimidating, knowing i had a scaffolding.
i suggest trying this. see how it goes for you. read around until you find some piece of criticism, or just some theory about how something works, that you like. and using your newfound hammer, go look for some nails.
note: i know this expression is meant to like. be a negative thing. but you do have to start somewhere. it’s okay if it sucks. it’s just for your practice and your enjoyment.
be cautious of stances. weak writing (in my OPINIONNNN) tries to unilaterally defend or condemn a behavior. what you need to do is treat your writing as a bit. and then you need to run with it. you need to take it farther than what is reasonable. if this bit is truly actually deeply true, then what does it mean about yourself? it’s like using a new set of pronouns as a joke or something. you know what i mean? (that was an example of what i’m trying to communicate here)
what else is key to look out for... look for oppositional pairs or tensions. look for perverse incentives and vicious circles. look for embarrassing ideas. that is, what would be extremely embarrassing if it was true? (or to admit that it was true) you may go—tshirt, here you’re just describing things that are sexy. yes, exactly, that’s the point. you want things that thrill.
just keep reading and making notes until everything echoes with something else. now you’re ready for step two.
step two: refine your ideas further.
let me do this by demonstration. once more extending my earlier example of my chinoiserie essay, i knew that i really wanted to take zuroski’s points and basically... steal them. this is called “citation,” i guess. but i thought the following insights were useful to me:
british women were invested in chinese material objects
they incorporated them into their own subjectivity
past a certain point, they no longer “consumed” these signifiers, but these signifers became theirs
critique of one was able to stand in for critique of the other
and from being on fandom twitter, i already had the following insights:
people deliberately blurred the lines between china and england when it came to fans and tea
people also liked talking about victorian modesty when it came to china
so it seemed like victorian england and china had a privileged relationship, in a lot of people’s minds in fandom.
so it didn’t really seem a stretch to say... how can we look at one history, and apply it to our present?
it was a bit of the combo of the two: i saw something i didn’t see people were talking about, and it reminded me of something else i’d read before.
something that helps me a lot is tweeting about my essay ideas. if you have me on my private account, you already know this. it forces me to explain myself to someone who doesn’t know what i’m talking about in a very succinct way. oftentimes, i tweet something out while i’m brainstorming, and then i steal the phrasing back into my essay. see? tweets can be writing too.
this is microdosing on step zero’s “read something and practice telling a friend about it.” now you’re writing something and telling a friend about it.
step three: okay now you can like. open a google doc
make an outline. i know i know i know. i’m sorry. you can start just barfing thoughts if you want, but eventually everything that was on the top of your head will be out. and now you can start thinking about structure. the reason the outline is important is because it makes clear the logical progression from one idea to the next.
i know i usually bounce around in my writing (a tendency which has been magnified here because this is so casual LMAO), but i always want to make sure that my points are substantiated. if we want to talk about how a causes b, we should prove a, we should prove the causal link, and only then can we infer b, for instance. it doesn’t really matter what order that happens in (or even that we set about it that way), but the more complicated your idea is, the longer checklist you need. it’s just a checklist. that’s all.
as you start writing, you’ll probably need to read some more. you’re going to want to say something you think is true, but you’re going to realize that you haven’t proved it (or you can’t). go look to see if someone else has proved it.
maybe you’re right. add that evidence in. maybe you’re wrong. now your essay has a new direction. there is a living thing beneath you. actually, on that idea—
i tend to structure my outlines (if i’m not sure yet what my point is) by pasting a bunch of quotes in a document, and reorganizing them until they make sense, they seem to flow. and then i start explaining why, until i realized i have begun to walk off in a new direction. always embrace that new direction. eventually you will find that you have not been taking twists and turns, but actually you were dizzily walking along a straight path. (unless you have been unfocused and you are trying to say too many things at once. ask a friend to read your essay if you’re not sure which is the case.)
quotes are the smallest unit of your analysis. work with evidence. or, at least, i do. it makes writing an essay like solving a mystery. the idea of just spontaneously generating something new fills me with terror. rather, i want to autopsy something, trace its steps, and then discover how it came to be dead. this may not be true for you. but it’s true for meeeee and this is my post.
tl;dr
0. read something and tell someone about it/post it out
0.5. come up with a bit and run with it
1. think "why is no one talking about this" or start free associating
2. come up with weird connections and tell someone about it/post it out
3. collect all of your posts and ideas into a gdoc and organize them.
anyway i like reading posts like this because i’m incredibly nosy. so i tried to write out the sort of thing i like to read from other people. i don’t suggest you actually try to replicate it (if anyone would even want to.) practically basically i just encourage you to try any single part of this that you think was interesting or relatable or helpful. personally, i suggest reading a book and posting your favorite lines from it. if you do this a couple times, i think you will find the seeds of an essay waiting for you in your own posts.

firsts with itadori yuji
Tumblr media
I hope you don’t mind I’m kind of running with this idea and adding more than you asked lol I just...i don’t know it butters my biscuit. Also gender neutral reader~
First meeting:
It’s at his old school
You’re in his class, but you never talk to each other! Itadori is shy with you, believe it or not! He wants to say something but whenever he thinks about going up to you, whether you’re alone or with a group, his stomach twists in knots
Luckily though, you’re also in a club that ends right when he goes to the hospital to see his grandpa, so he’ll walk a little slower to see you coming out of your club room talking and laughing with your friends and he’ll imagine what it must be like to be in a club with you
Will not ask you to join his club tho, shy shy shy he is
It’s only when it’s raining and, yes you guessed it correctly folks, you don’t have an umbrella!
Itadori Yuji has a few options here lads, what do we think he’ll pick?
Option one: be a cool guy and slide right up to you with his umbrella already open in his hands and tell you that he’ll walk you home
Option two: ask politely if you’d like to walk under his umbrella together to your house and maybe stop at a convenience store along the way for a candy?
Option three: be a cool guy(again) and just put the umbrella in your hands and tell you to use it and he walks out into the rain with only his hood on, enticing you to run out to him and say that you two can share an umbrella!
What option do you think he’s chosen?
Now was Yujis chance. You were alone, standing just inside the school entryway rocking back and forth on your heels, a little pout on your lips at seeing the downpour. It had only just started raining, it was clear weather all week, so this rain is more than just a little unexpected.
Gripping his umbrella tightly in his hands, Yuji walks up to you, intent on asking if you want to share his. He’d be more than happy to walk you home, his grandpa would be happy to hear that he walked his crush home instead of ‘wasting his time’ coming to the hospital.
“H-hey!” Yuji’s voice goes higher than he intended when he drops his umbrella and kicks it forward as he walks, launching it at your feet and making you jump a little and turn around. His face erupts in a fiery blush when you pick it up and look at him quizzically.
“Here you go.” You say, holding it out for him to take. Yuji shakes his head almost violently, much to your confusion. “Uhm, Itadori, what are you trying to say?”
You know his name. Oh fuck, you know his name and here he is making a fool of himself.
“I-I- no, take my umbrella.” His brain is in critical overdrive. He truly might pass out. “Take my umbrella! I have my hood, and I’m not going very far! Just to the hospital, to see my grandpa! They’ll probably have an umbrella there I can borrow if it’s still raining!” He really, honestly, truly didn’t mean to say all that, but the words came out like vomit.
“Oh, that’s nice, thank you so much!” Your smile warms his heart but does nothing to calm him down. “But I’m-”
“(Y/N)!” One of your friends shouts from down the hall, and they quickly round the corner with their own umbrella in their hands.
“Hey!”
“I got my umbrella from the classroom, let's go home now!” Your friend quickly notices Yuji. “Hi Itadori, what’s up?”
“He offered me his umbrella. Thanks again, Itadori!” Grabbing his hand, you put the umbrella back in his possession.
“Uh- yeah! You- welcome! Welcome!” Yuji stutters out, waving dumbly back at you as you wave at him and leave the school with a cute little smile on your cheeks.
Yuji was never going to wash his hand again.
First hangout:
This one happens as a going away party for himself after he’s accepted into his new school
He wants to say goodbye to his clubmates, and somehow word got out and a few classmates are coming as well - even you!
Everyone got him a little cake and you’ve all signed a going away card, and Yuji hones in on your message, a cute swirly one written in a glitter gel pen with a heart by his name
Afterschool in the classroom, you all decide to play games and stuff, and that’s when he gets to be close to you
“(Y/N), Itadori, you’re up next!” Somehow a tournament style game has started of who can hold their breath the longest. Standing face to face at the front of the room, you give him a big thumbs up.
“You’re probably going to win, Itadori, I’m bad at this kind of thing.” You laugh.
“Let’s see.” Is all he can say as a reply. You’d talked a bit more after your first meeting, but he could never get more than a few words out at a time.
“Go!” Sucking in deep breaths, you stare at each other with puffed out cheeks. You’re already struggling, fighting back laughter and clapping a hand over your mouth. Yuji thinks he might lose just from seeing how cute you are in front of him.
“Ahhh!” You lose, just like you said you would. Dizzy from lack of air, you stumble forward into him, laughing and gripping the front of his jacket. “Told you!” His hand lands on your shoulder and Yuji is sure he could pass away happy right now.
“Yeah, you are pretty bad.” Yuji laughs, finally breaking his nervous shell around you the more you laugh and pat him on the arm.
After this game, you form a team and play with a ball, help each other with cards, and you even paint his nails in a pretty polish you’d brought from home. At the end, Yuji is still too nervous to ask for your number, so this is the last time you see each other.
First confession:
It’s been two years since then, he’s a third year now and Yuji still thinks about you. He still checks in with his old school friends from time to time and asks about you, and he follows you on Instagram and sees the things you post and how much you’ve changed over the years
He’s not content living this way, only seeing and hearing about you like this, but it’s been two years since you last saw each other and you weren’t exactly close before you left, so he couldn’t just slide into your DM’s
And in the past two years he’s changed. A lot. Not only has he been swamped with his new life, he also has a whole nother soul inside of him that quickly learned of his long lost crush and teased him about it nonstop
But on a free day in the city with Nobara, he’s quite literally buzzing - you’re in the same area. He saw you post last night about going to a certain cafe and all he had to do was ask Nobara if she wanted to go to the city and she said yes immediately.
And now he’s standing in front of said cafe, and he can see you inside. Surprisingly you’re alone, and his fingers itch to go in and ‘casually’ bump into you
Nobara knows of his crush on you as well, and as soon as she spots you she’s pushing Yuji through the door, and of course they cause a fucking scene
“Get in the fucking cafe!” Nobara is shouting not so quietly. There’s people walking past them, looking confused, and Yuji could literally die right now, especially when he makes eye contact with you.
He gives up then, letting himself get pushed into the cafe. He expects Nobara to follow after him but she’s running down the street cackling evilly. Yuji has no other option than to go in and order a drink, albeit shamefully.
“H-hi. Is this seat taken?” He asks you. You’d been watching him ever since you saw him with a big smile barely concealed by your hand.
“Of course not, Itadori.” You giggle.
God, he’s missed you.
Sitting down across from you, Yuji takes a quick sip of his drink to soothe his suddenly parched throat. Sukuna knows better than to pop out in public, but that still doesn’t stop Yuji from putting a hand over one of the marks below his eyes, just in case.
“How have you been (Y/N)?” He tries to say casually, but his voice warbles and Sukuna chuckles quietly for only him to hear.
“I’ve been good! It’s been so long, Itadori, I’ve missed you!” You pout, a wicked sight for his heart, and you reach across the table to pat Yuji on the arm. “I’ve been wanting to message you on Instagram for forever now but I’ve been too nervous you wouldn’t really remember me!”
“You have?” Yuji gasped dramatically, and he could hear not only you but Sukuna laughing at him.
“Yeah! I’m actually really surprised to see you here, I thought you went to a school out in another prefecture.”
“N-no! I’m still in Tokyo!”
“Really, we should totally hang out sometime!”
“Yes!” This couldn’t be going any better for Yuji. There’s a pause in conversation where you both take a sip of your drinks.
“So, was that your girlfriend pushing you into the cafe?”
“What?!” Yuji nearly shouts, almost spitting out his drink. “G-girlfriend?!” His cheeks blush lightly, and he shakes his head. “No. No way, she is not my girlfriend. She’s my classmate.”
“That’s good to hear, actually.” Now is your turn to be embarrassed, and a bashful smile spreads on your cheeks. “Because I’ve always kind of liked you.”
What.
“What?!” This time Yuji does shout, Sukuna is definitely laughing at him and teasing him, and you’re nodding in confirmation. “Oh my god.” Running a hand through his hair, Yuji doesn’t even have to think about his next words. “I like you too! A lot!”
“Really?” Your brow raises.
“Yes! Ever since first year. I’ve had a-” was he really about to say this? “A massive crush on you.” He realizes what he’s said is a little heavier than what you said. A massive crush is much different than kind of liking someone, but he can’t help it. And Sukuna is quick to point out the difference in his head as well.
“Then we really have to hang out!” Yuji laughs, relieved you feel the same way.
“It’s a date.” He says and delights in the way you share a cheeky smile.
“Definitely a date.”
First date:
Yuji never thought he’d ever have the opportunity to go on a date with you, at least not in this lifetime
You exchange numbers at the cafe and as soon as Yuji gets back to the dorms he’s texting you, asking if you got home okay and to let him know when you’re free
That first text is a gateway drug because now he can’t stop texting you all the time, even when he’s in class or should be training
He’s staying up far too late to message you but no one can stop him
When your schedules finally align again, you both settle on going to a ramen shop close by his old school
6pm. That’s the time you agreed to meet up. So why was Yuji already down the block from the restaurant at 5:15?
“God you’re so desperate!” Sukuna laughed as Yuji sat in an empty park waiting for time to go by.
“I know, I know.” He groaned back, tilting his head back and squeezing his eyes together. “I was so nervous about being late I didn’t even think!”
“Ya know, when I had my own body, I used to go on dates all the time! Women flocked to me, I was a god!”
“Yeah, yeah.” Slapping a hand over the mouth that had appeared, Yuji rolled his eyes. “I’m not like you, we know this.”
“I was hoping I’d be rubbing off on you, kid, but it seems not.” Sukuna sighed in disappointment. When 6pm finally came, Yuji all but ran to the restaurant. He was still ten minutes early, and when you came strolling up the nervous jitters he had increased.
“Hi!” You looked so cute, Yuji could pass out.
“H-hey.” He waved stupidly, and then stumbled to open the door for you. Quickly grabbing a table, he was paying more attention to you than the menu.
“What’re you gonna get? I can’t decide!” You whined, slapping your menu against the table.
“Oh uhm, maybe this one?” Pointing at the first thing he saw that looked mildly interesting, he watched you nod your head and hum. “Or maybe this.” Looking at the menu properly, Yuji pointed at something he’d actually get.
“Ooooh, I wanna get that too! If you get it, will you let me try some?” Your face lit up and you bit your lip, eyes darting between things on the menu.
“Of course!” Yuji nodded without any hesitation.
“Yay! I just can’t decide, everything looks so good!”
“It does!” As he laughed and kept looking at things on the menu with you, Yuji finally let himself relax a little bit. You made great conversation, asking about his new and how he’d been, how he got those scars under his eyes and what his new school was like.
Yuji had never had so much fun talking with someone before, and when the date came to a close, he could nearly cry. He wanted to be with you all the time, see you more often and build more memories together. The thought of going back to his old school even came back.
“I’ll walk you to the station.” He said instead, pushing away all the thoughts in his head.
“Thanks.” You were side by side walking down the block, and Yuji was beginning to find it more and more coincidental that your hand kept bumping into his. He could feel you looking at him from the corner of your eye, and he knew he had to make the leap.
Slipping his hand into yours, he wound your fingers together and squeezed. Both of your palms were kind of sweaty and neither of you looked at each other, but you squeezed his hand back and held it tightly until you got to the station and your train arrived.
First kiss:
After the first date, Yuji is hooked
Any chance the two of you have to be together, he takes even if it means shirking his responsibilities a little bit(Fushiguro is upset but who can stop love?)
You go get ice cream together, go to the arcade, the movies, the park, you even meet Nobara and Fushiguro on a chance day
You do all these things together, but Yuji still hasn’t kissed you!
He wants to, so so bad, but he just can’t, he’d die of embarrazzment if he fucked up and like hit you in the head or something
But sometimes, as nike said, you just gotta do it
It’s raining again, just like when you first spoke to each other. A torrential downpour, but this time you didn’t have a friend coming with their umbrella to the front of the school to share with you. Yuji was coming to your school after your club to pick you up for an impromptu date.
“Hey!” You shouted, braving the rain and meeting him halfway when you spotted him coming up. Hugging him tightly, you shivered from the wind whipping through the air.
“Hi.” Slipping your bag from around your shoulders, Yuji slung it over his shoulder. His arm settled on your waist, holding you close and making sure you were completely covered. Walking so close together like this made him happy, and he almost pressed a kiss to your head.
“Yuji.” You said as you were walking, stopping by a low river lined with trees.
“Hm?” He still couldn’t get over the fact that you were now saying his first name. The both of you stopped walking and you stepped back a little from him, wringing your hands nervously.
“We’ve been going out for a while now and…” Biting your lip nervously, you couldn’t meet his eyes and looked out at the trees being pelted with water. “And I was wondering if you uh- if you wanted to be my boyfriend?”
Oh shit. Yuji was so shocked, he nearly dropped the umbrella.
“B-boyfriend?” He squeaked, his cheeks spreading in a bashful smile. “I’d love to.”
“Really?” Letting out a relieved sigh, you clasped a hand over your heart. “That’s good! I was so nervous.” The way you were looking at him, Yuji knew this was the perfect time to kiss you.
“C-can I kiss you?” His question made your eyes widen, and silently you nodded your head.
Sliding his foot forward on the wet pavement, Yuji faltered a few inches from your mouth, suddenly nervous. He had never kissed anyone before, and what if he was horrible at it and you hated it?
He didn’t have any time to keep thinking about it though, because you closed the gap and kissed him. Dropping his umbrella in shock, Yuji’s eyes widened and he kissed you back, grabbing your shoulder to steady himself.
It was a sweet and innocent first kiss, soft and gentle for the inexperience shared between you. It didn’t even last that long, but it was the most memorable moment of Yuji's life.
“How was that?” He asked when he pulled away. The two of you were getting absolutely soaked with the rain and it dripped down his face into his eyes and mouth.
“Great.” You giggled shyly, putting a hand on your face to hide yourself. Yuji laughed as well and gave your cheek a kiss before picking up the fallen umbrella.
“You wanna go to that ramen shop?” Yuji whispered close to your ear, adjusting your bag on his shoulder.
“Sure.” Turning to him, your eyes dropped to his lips and you gave him a quick peck, breaking out into a fit of giggles again. Beginning to walk down the street, if anyone saw the two of you, they would immediately know what young love looked liked, as it was perfectly plastered on both of your faces.

Fixations and love.
Pairing: Spencer Reid x Reader (I’m fairly sure I didn’t include any pronouns so it can be read as gender neutral)
Summary: Just fluff honestly, it’s quite short but it’s pretty much just Spencer coming home from a case, you’re making bread and lots of cuddles and kisses. Pretty much just fluff with plot.
Word count: 1674
Warnings: None just a load of fluff.
Prompt: 7. “Well the probability of that is 0 but knock yourself out”
A/N: Thank you so much for the request. i posted this like 10 days ago but it was unedited and honestly awful, I haven’t had any inspiration to write in ages, i tried to fix the mess that this was but I still don’t think its great, its ok but anyways. I’m going to try and get out of this slump.
A/N2: My old account got deleted so I'm just reposting my fics I would appreciate if you could bust this so i could get back to where my account was thank you for your time.
Tumblr media
God you hated mornings. They are just horrible, people that like them should not be trusted, they must have issues if they enjoy leaving their nice warm bed.
That’s why you always stayed up late, it had always been that way, when the sun was down is when you felt your happiest and most productive.
And that is why you are currently up at 2am making bread in your kitchen, well attempting. You had wanted to have had the bread done by now or at least by the time Spencer got back home from their latest case. But maybe your plans to bake in the morning got pushed back by the fact you slept until 2pm (it’s the weekend so no judging) and then had some work you brought home to finish so yeah, you’re doing it now. But better late than never.
You were currently sitting on your couch watching greys anatomy while you let your dough rest (for the third time because you may or may not have been very unsuccessful thus far but third times the charm right).
While you were completely wrapped up in the current episode you heard the keys turning and your front door opening to reveal your very handsome boyfriend finally home from a weeklong case.
As soon as you both made eye contact smiles appeared and you rose from your spot and ran straight into his open arms were your face buried into his chest welcoming his familiar smell and he buried his into the top of your head letting the smell of home engulf him, your smell.
You stood there for a minute or two like you always did. After every case when Spencer came home to you, you hugged him, you held each other because that’s what you needed what you both needed, sometimes longer than others but without fail you needed to feel him to feel that he was there and that he had gotten home safe.
He needed to feel you to feel at home and grounded and at peace, he needed to feel the happiness you could only bring to him in contrast of the sadness and horror he was stepping away from.
Spencer was the first to break the silence as you gripped his cardigan , he kissed your temple before speaking “I don’t think I will ever get tired of coming home to you” you smiled at that, home you loved it when he called you home, “I truly hope you don’t, I know I will never get tired of coming home to you” you said the last part as you looked up at him and saw he was already looking at you with a love sick smile, he brought one of his hands up you cup your cheek and you leaned in welcoming the familiar touch.
“I love you y/n” you smiled, god you had heard him say it so many times but it would never fail to make you smile, and so you leaned up and capture his lips in a kiss that said more you ever could.
The first kiss after a case was always all consuming, it was filed with so much love, lust and emotion. It was powerful and wonderful; it was everything you couldn’t share while you were apart and everything you did; all the I love yous and the I miss yous shared over the phone all in one kiss all to show that even though he you couldn’t always be together physically the love and care would always be there. It made you feel loved and any insecurities you or he had about themselves or the relationship were wiped away. It was a dream.
You pulled away first cursing your lungs for needing air, neither you or Spencer opened your eyes just leaned on each other’s forehead basking in the moment and relishing in the love just shared, “I love you too spencer, so much”.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Spencer had gone to shower a little after and you were making coffee, currently adding his mountain of sugar. You had gotten him to cut back on it a little, but it barely mattered he still took it like there was no tomorrow.
You heard him coming out of the shower and approaching you, your back was still to him as you made the coffee so he hugged you from behind and rested his head on your shoulder leaving light scattered kisses on your neck his half dried hair tickling you as he did you giggled.
“Spence stop your tickling me” you giggled while wriggling in his hold, “fine but only because I see coffee and I haven’t had any in too long”.
You half turn around to pick up his mug while now being caged in between the counter and him and handing him his mug.
He takes it from you with a grateful smile and takes a sip “thank you love, it’s perfect” he says after tasting it and kissing your cheek, you reply with a simple and very cocky ‘I know’ before picking up your own mug and taking a sip. Spencer simply sighed out a breathy laugh and shook his head.
Spencer set his cup down on the counter behind you and rested his hands on your hips one hand mindlessly making its way under your shirt, circling your left hip with his thumb without even thinking about it more of just an instinct to need to feel you in any way possible, you both stood like that in comfortable silence.
Spencer broke the silence as the thought popped in his head “so, what were you up to so late” your eyes widen with excitement, you had completely forgotten about the bread dough, it should be ready by now. Jumping up and setting your mug down you practically ran to where you had left your dough to rise.
“Oh, I nearly forgot” you paused in front of the bowl and looked at Spencer who was looking at you with an amused grin, while leaning on the counter and sipping his coffee. So, you explained plainly “I’ve been making bread”.
He raised a questioning eyebrow at you and repeated your statement but as more of an amused question than a statement. “You’ve been making bread?” you just scowled at him and answered very overexaggeratedly, “yes Spencer I have been making bread” you answered strongly, and he just gave you a look before you continued.
“Fine it hasn’t been very successful but this time I know it will be perfect I just need to check that my dough has risen”.
Spenser loved how you got these hyper fixations, you would obsess over shows and hobbies, you would have so much joy and passion for each of them and he loved you even more for it. This time it looks like it was bread, but he quickly saw your face drop as you took the cloth of the top of your bowl.
“Did it not rise” you simply huffed and looked ultimately defeated as you leaned on the counter behind you crossing your arms looking like a sad puppy, you looked up when you heard steps and saw Spencer making his way to you.
“I don’t get it I followed the recipe exactly why do I keep messing it up” Spencer hugged you once he had reached you and rubbed circles onto your back “it’s alright love, bread is a really difficult and delicate thing to make, I’m sure you’ll get it.” This didn’t really make you feel better, you simply grumbled and inaudible response as your face was buried in his chest, Spencer tried his best not to laugh, you were just so adorable when you were tired and slightly grumpy.
“Tell you what love, its late why don’t we go to bed and try again tomorrow”.
You just grumbled into his chest again and this time he couldn’t hold back a tinny   giggle, you knew he was right, you were tired plus you had run out of flour so tomorrow would be the better option.
You could feel Spencer’s chest move as he laughed at your response “come on love I’m sure you will get it tomorrow; I don’t have work so I can help you it will be fun” you simply replied a slightly less muffled response from your spot in his chest “Well the probability of that is 0 but you can knock yourself out“.
“Oh, come on grumpy boots, it will be fun you’re just tired just wait until tomorrow evening when you get your energy back”. “Fine Mr 187 maybe you’re right”.
“Yes I am, now come on I’m tired too, plus I’ve missed sleeping with you in my arms”.
You removed your face from his chest and looked at him while moving your arms up around his neck playing with the damp hair in the nape of his neck “I missed having you in my bed too, your hoodie isn’t the same, it smells the same, but it isn’t you”.
Spencer looked at your sad eyes recalling the nights alone “I know but I’m here now and I don’t plan on leaving your side while I am, now come on”.
You squealed as Spencer swiftly grabbed the top of your thighs and picked you up your legs wrapping around him out of habit. “Spencer I can walk”.
Spencer smirked and patted you bum with one of his hands as you hid your face in his neck to hide how flustered he was making you, “yeah well I want to carry you, I told you I’m not leaving your side while I’m home with you, I’m keeping you as close as possible”.
And with that he walked you to your shared room and laid you down, having already been in pj’s you didn’t need to change, he got under the covers with you and you held each other sharing kisses and I love yours until you drifted of feeling complete once again now that you were back together.
๑ Requested by a lovely Anon! ♡
๑ Characters: Tomohito Sugino (Assassination Classroom)
๑ Quick Note: Hello, darling! Thank you so much for requesting this! I had a bunch of fun writing this, sorry if it’s a bit long or not 100% like the request, but I feel like I got the major stuff. I really hope you like it!
๑ Warnings: None, really. Just fairly angsty, though, as always, there’s hurt/comfort vibes and a happy ending. :)
๑ Word Count: 3,562
(Y/N) (L/N) considered herself to be at the top of the world.
They were exactly where they were supposed to be so far in her life, getting exactly what they wanted and what they aimed for from how much work they put in. (Y/N) may have been one step down from the very top, but they were more than willing to take the place they earned. They were the top girl in the entirety of Kunugigaoka Junior High and there was nothing more satisfying than knowing that, aside from her place on the student council, but even that wasn’t quite the same. High grades came with high status, and in a school as ruthless as this one, she loved nothing more than knowing that the fruits of her own labor were what were keeping her safe.
Granted, it was lonely at the top. No one really liked anyone at Kunugigaoka for the most part. Sure, there were friendships, but all of them seemed either fake or hanging on by a thread. The admiration of others like her or the principal’s son wasn’t all that real, either. That admiration became jealousy and envy in seconds. People were willing to do virtually anything and use almost anyone to keep their grades up. Anything to avoid getting transferred to 3-E, that is. You were doomed if you managed to drop down to the “End Class,” no one had ever heard a story of someone being sent there coming back. It was like a story made up to keep everyone in line, only it wasn’t a story. It was very, painfully real and the stories served their purpose.
     (Y/N) had once had friends with her. She still did to an extent, but it wasn’t the same. Or, at least, they didn’t think it was. There was her cousin, Maehara, and Sugino, her best friend. They were thick as thieves, though, E Class brought separation, putting up a barrier between herself and the boys. The barriers were different for each boy, though.
Maehara was family, close family at that. He was (Y/N)’s first and best friend in the universe. The added bonus of sharing blood, however, was what kept them close. The two had to attend family gatherings, meaning that even if their academic endeavors kept them apart, their personal lives weren’t going to get in their way, either.
     Sugino, however, was a friend. A friend without any family ties or any true reason to seek (Y/N) out, or at least, that’s what he had thought. (Y/N) left things fairly open when Sugino had to switch classes, completely putting her reputation on the line for him. They had always sent soft smiles and friendly winks his way when they passed each other on campus, but they never got any sort of response or reaction. It just created shame and embarrassment on both of their ends.
After a month or two, (Y/N) worked to make herself move on. They couldn’t forget him entirely, nor would she let herself, but they also acknowledged all of the variables that came with Sugino’s new situation. His world was essentially being turned upside down. Everything he had and had known before being shipped up the mountain was being taken away from him and changed. (Y/N) couldn’t even begin to understand what he was going through, and honestly, she didn’t want to. At this point, (Y/N) just wished things could go back to how they were. They missed their best friend, and they missed not feeling hurt by him.
It was only a matter of time until the universe pushed the two back together, though.
Despite being one of the best students and having absolutely nothing to worry about, (Y/N)’s stomach and heart dropped, they were called to the principal's office. (Y/N) wasn’t sure if there ever was or would be a point in time where the man didn’t scare her, but that was the least of her concerns at that moment. They could have been asked anything in that office. They could have been told anything in that office. Anything could have happened, and the worst part was that it likely couldn’t have been something she could share. Even if they wanted to, or it  was deemed that it was something they could share in the first place, but wasn’t sure they’d even have it in themself to. Even though Principal Asano paraded himself as some kind of borderline neutral and caring man, everyone knew that he was the exact opposite.
“You wanted to see me, sir?” (Y/N) fought the shake in their voice, but it wasn’t quite enough to get rid of it. She may have closed herself off after Sugino and Maehara left, but the man’s intimidation factor was something that couldn’t be ignored. It was all too intense and the dark appearance and atmosphere of the room did nothing to calm her nerves.
“I did.” His deep voice sounded almost cheerful, more than (Y/N) would have liked to hear. She would have preferred his rumbling monotone over this. “I have been doing some thinking recently and as it turns out, you’re the only one I can think of to handle this job.”
(Y/N) stared at the man in front of them curiously. They weren’t sure what he wanted, and they didn’t like that. The worst part, however, is that (Y/N) knew she wouldn’t have much of a choice. “Oh yeah?”
“Yes. I believe Class 3-E needs a bit of extra help.” (Y/N)’s stomach began to twist. “Unfortunately, I need my son to stay where he is, but you,” he paused, peering up at her from his desk, “you are a bit more flexible in regards to things like this. You help people all the time after all.”
(Y/N) felt herself swallow heavily. There were so many possibilities of what could happen that they felt like they might not be able to cope. Sure, Maehara was there, but that seemed to be the only bright side. (Y/N) knew going up the mountain would be rough, and she wished she could find even the slightest bit of wiggle room to decline his so-called offer.
Asano, however, did not appreciate (Y/N)’s silence. He hated the obvious hesitance to answer even more. For someone in her position, (Y/N) seemed to have more resolve than he expected; others would have already given in with panicked compliance. He had noticed (Y/N)’s change over time, however, it made her the way she appeared; unmoving and closed off. Then he thought of his best bargaining chips. “You know people there, correct?”
“Almost everyone.” (Y/N) replied, not answering with what he wanted to hear on purpose. “I fear that not everyone would appreciate my presence, no matter how nice I am, though.” It was the truth and (Y/N) felt it needed to be said. It was a genuine concern and (Y/N) didn’t want to overstep; they would have every right to not like her and (Y/N) would never be able to blame them.
“I’m sure that’s not true. You have family in the E class. A cousin, correct?”
“Yes, sir.” (Y/N) knew at this moment that he had officially backed them into the farthest corner he could.
“I’m sure he’ll love to see you.” His words were final; there was no getting out of this. “Now, there are a few things that will make this arrangement different.”
(Y/N) ignored the memory that wouldn’t leave them alone in the last few days. They hated that they let themself  be cornered that way and hated that they weren't too surprised even more. Kunugigaoka was corrupt and heavily classist, they knew that, but it was still wild to them. That was the environment they were growing up in, and because of the principal, it was arguably getting worse.
There were multiple things that (Y/N) had to face that morning that they weren’t ready for. All issues varied in their severity, but (Y/N) viewed all of them as something to worry about. Once (Y/N) thought of them, however, they noticed that their priorities may have been a bit skewed.
The strangest part that (Y/N) had to worry about was the main teacher of Class 3-E. The teacher, who was named Koro-Sensei by his students, was actually an alien. Not only that, but an alien that destroyed most of the moon and planned on doing the same to Earth. As much as (Y/N) wanted to ignore it, the gun and knife tucked into the waistband of their skirt and meeting a government agent absolutely destroyed that option.
There was also the class itself. (Y/N) once knew all of them and was even on good terms with almost all of them, but things definitely change once you’re booted off the main campus. (Y/N) was sure that no matter how nice she made sure to be to them that they wouldn’t accept any of it. She was considered top tier while they were nothing as soon as they got transferred. (Y/N) knew she couldn’t blame any of them for how they might feel or react to her.
Then, of course, there was Sugino. In (Y/N)’s mind, Sugino was the scariest thing about that day and their foreseeable future. Would he be even a little happy to see them? Would he talk to them at all now that (Y/N) was in his territory? It seemed dumb to (Y/N) that this was what got to them the most, but it was what it was. They had been inseparable, and now things were different, so wildly different. (Y/N) didn’t think she was ready.
(Y/N) let out a breath as they stood in front of the door to 3-E. She wasn’t sure if it was something that had been held in because of nerves or the trek up the mountain, but it helped remind them to breathe. They rolled her shoulders back and took another deep breath. (Y/N) could do this. If they could talk shit to the principal’s son’s face, they could face their old classmates and friends.
They knocked on the door, waiting for the ‘come in’ before moving. Carefully closing the door behind them, they quickly glanced between their peers and the being in front of them. Bewildered by the teacher didn’t even truly begin to describe what (Y/N) thought, but they decided it was a good start as they continued to stand awkwardly by the door, purposefully ignoring all of the eyes on them. There were only two people (Y/N) felt they could look in the eye and they were Maehara and Nagisa Shiota, a boy who they swore didn’t have a mean bone in his body and reciprocated (Y/N)’s kindness. The fact that (Y/N) felt like they couldn’t look at Sugino definitely didn’t get past them, but they were absolutely going to force themself to forget it for the time being.
“Ah! You must be Miss (L/N)! Welcome!” The alien enthusiastically greeted. It was almost overwhelming if (Y/N) was being honest.
“Uh, yes, hello.” (Y/N) felt bad about their feeble response, but that was all they could seem to say. Honestly, (Y/N) knew the experience was going to be something else, especially as time past and (Y/N) closed themself off to the world. Everyone in the building probably saw her as two-faced, they were sure of it. “Truth be told, I’m not sure why I’m here.” At this point, (Y/N) figured being honest was the best and only way to go about things. “I know it had something to do with being a tutor or student teacher or something, but I saw your guy’s test scores, none of you really have anything to worry about.”
“You’re probably here to help off him more than anything, (N/N).” Maehara laughed. “He doubts us so much.” He trailed off sarcastically.
(Y/N) was grateful for it; they felt like it took some of the pressure off of them. “Right. I mean, nothing was said about spy work or whatever, so I guess it could be literally anything else.” (Y/N) tried joking along, though they knew it didn’t land as well as they would have wanted.
“Right, well, it likely was for the assassination, so good luck! I’m Koro-Sensei and I wish you luck in killing me!” Koro-Sensei’s face changed and (Y/N) felt their stomach drop in dread.
---
A few days had passed and things were going as smoothly as they could in the End Class. (Y/N) was definitely feeling the pressures that came with the new environment and couldn’t help but mentally commend everyone for how well they all seemed to keep up with everything. (Y/N) was admittedly rather shocked, though. Everyone seemed to warm up to her again, despite the clear change in her exterior. No one knew how the change came about, but they didn’t question it much, other than Karma who took a fair amount of joy in poking at (Y/N) every chance he got.
That being said, not everyone really interacted with (Y/N) if they didn’t have to, and she was more than okay with it. It did hurt, however, that Sugino was one of those people. (Y/N) wasn’t sure whether they were shocked or not, but it still left them with a weird sense of being hurt, despite how it was presented as indifference. That was their best friend, someone they considered to be their soulmate, platonic or otherwise, and now he wouldn’t even spare her a glance.
(Y/N) was torn between wanting to move on and wanting to fight. They knew that Sugino was the only one who could truly change his mind, but (Y/N) still held hope that their bond could be repaired. That hope only grew as time went on and (Y/N) spent more time in 3-E with everyone. (Y/N) felt as though they could feel that Sugino still felt something towards her and hoped that it was something positive, or at least neutral enough to talk to her a bit more than when he needed to.
To outsiders, (Y/N) could understand how some of it may have seen it as somewhat ridiculous or weird that she was still holding onto something like this, however, there were things that no one else knew about the situation. Funnily enough, that just so happened to be the majority of the details. The details, truly, were as clear as day if someone were to think about it for a moment, however, (Y/N) supposed it was the fault of anyone who misunderstood, not hers, and definitely not Sugino’s.
Whether anyone thought about it or not, Sugino’s transfer really wasn’t all that long ago. Just long enough for their mutual dread to set in and become part of their routines. It was a shame how quickly everything came about, but there was nothing either of them could have done about it. Neither of them were sure where they stood with the other.
Another seemingly obvious detail is that the two never said anything to the other about the situation. Not obviously, anyways. The news of someone going to the E Class had always been something that spread like a wildfire. Even though Sugino didn’t say it, he didn’t need to and (Y/N) only had words of comfort to offer. Sugino hadn’t wanted to hear it, though. He stormed away and (Y/N) was so shocked they couldn’t calm their mind enough to consider any of the possibly things he must have been feeling.
It was all a fiasco. There were other details, but they were far more miniscule compared to the others. After thinking about it, (Y/N) knew there were things that they were missing, things that they were sure that only Sugino was really aware of. He was the other half of this, after all. Much like how (Y/N) didn’t know what was going on in his mind, Sugino didn’t know what was going on in (Y/N)’s, and they weren’t even sure Sugino would ever want to know.
That Thursday afternoon, however, things were going to change. Much like when (Y/N) was called into Asano’s office, their world was going to shift once again, and drastically.
(Y/N) had assumed that if Tomohito Sugino were ever going to speak to them, it would be because Koro-Sensei needed him to, or because Maehara forced him to. When (Y/N) saw Sugino storming up to them like a man on a mission, they were sure that Maehara was behind whatever was about to come their way. Regardless, they weren’t going to take this opportunity for granted.
“Uh, (Y/N)?” His voice was hesitant, yet strict with nerves. The small, petty part of (Y/N) wanted to ignore him or seem uninterested, but it wasn't as simple as that. Mainly because (Y/N) couldn’t hide their interest, even though they wanted to.
“Hey, Sugino. What’s up?”
“Not much.” He answered stiffly. “I was just wondering if we could talk for a minute?” (Y/N) nodded at the boy and followed him to a quieter place where the two could talk.
(Y/N) wasn’t sure whether Sugino genuinely wanted to talk or he would have rather been anywhere else. It seemed almost as though Sugino were fighting himself; like he wasn’t fully allowed to embrace the fact that since they had become slightly reacquainted with each other, he had become more comfortable around them. Their situation seemed to get weirder and weirder every time (Y/N) thought about it, making her head spin.
“So… It’s been a minute since we’ve spoken.” Sugino awkwardly started, trailing off and not daring to look (Y/N) in the eye.
“Yeah, it has. I mean, you kinda ran off and never even looked at me afterward.” The hurt and slight bit of spite was obvious in their voice. She couldn’t help it; their issues were finally being addressed, and even though (Y/N) was going to be polite enough about her feelings and take any of his into account, she still wanted Sugino to be aware of how badly they were hurt because of his lack of communication. “I’m more than willing to hear you out, but I also hope you know that what you did hurt.”
Sugino nodded his head, finally looking at them. “Of course! And- And I didn’t mean for it to happen that way, really.” There was a brief pause before he continued. “When I got the news and when the word got around and stuff, uh, I was honestly kind of a wreck, but it didn’t really hit until later in the day when I saw you. I know that sounds bad, but like, it wasn’t your fault.”
(Y/N) almost wanted to laugh, to reach a comforting hand out onto his shoulder. Despite their time apart, it almost felt like nothing had changed. (Y/N) still felt the immediate need to show him their support, to make sure that he knew he still had someone unconditionally in his corner. Just sitting there and listening to what he had to say made it feel like any pain that was there didn’t exist, as though it had never been caused in the first place.
“I just- It was dawning on me how my life was ruined, and it bothered me that people spread it around so quickly and so easily. My life was officially over, and all of our classmates and so-called friends were just laughing about it!” He exclaimed. “I was so scared and so ashamed that I felt like I couldn’t face you. I guess, I was just scared that you were going to reject me.” He quieted himself down, letting his fists clench tightly.
(Y/N) finally broke, resting their hand on top of the closer of his hands. “Sugino, I’m so sorry.”
“I know it’s dumb. You just mean so much to me that I was scared that you wouldn’t want anything to do with me. I completely messed our relationship up, and I’m sorry. You mean a lot to me, (Y/N); that’s never changed and never will.”
A deep frown settled itself on both of their faces, their fingers now intertwined. The silence was heavy and thoughtful. Neither of them wanted the moment to end, however, they both wished for better circumstances. That being said, they were together and it felt like old times. By that logic, they were on good terms once again, at least to some degree.
“You’re dumb, Sugino.” (Y/N) laughed and gently bumped shoulders with the boy next to them, pulling a laugh from him too.
“So are you, (Y/N).” He answered back, finally letting a small smile rest on his lips. “Wanna go catch up over food?” Sugino sheepishly offered.
(Y/N) laughed, completely unsurprised. “Sure.” She laughed, pushing herself off the ground. They dusted themself off and held out a hand towards Sugino to pull him up, not letting go of his hand. “Let’s go.”
Teenage Rebellion
I wanted to do something completely different. And I realized I had never really used Adrien’s character that much. Apart from the standard salt. So I decided to give him a better voice. Test my skills with a new character.
Adrien didn’t know what happened. What snapped inside of him? But he just knew that, one day, while his father was giving him a lecture and laying out demands, a funny little word popped in to his head; no. Then he started to wonder if he could say no. Then he heard Marinette her new internship only allowed her to work so many hours because she was only a kid. Then he heard something magical; child labor laws. He looked them up and was amazed. He wanted to know more; wanted to know what his options were. So he went to Marinette and Nino. Then explained that he had rights. When he mentioned about getting taken out of school, they gave him options of how to retaliate.
           Nevertheless, it would be weeks before he decided to implement his new idea; not daring to yet. When he finally struck, he knew exactly what the final straw had bene.
“You’ll be taking Miss Rossi to the gala next weekend,” Gabriel told his son.
           Adrien blinked, “No.”
           The room went silent. Nathalie and gorilla looked stunned. Gabriel glanced at his son, “What do you mean no. This is not up for debate.”
Nothing ever was, Adrien thought, and that was problem.
“You’re right,” Adrien nodded. “Which is why my answer is still no.”
           Gabriel assessed his usually obeying son. “I’m not asking.”
“And yet my answer is no.”
“And if you could no longer attend that school of yours?” Gabriel threatened. It always worked.
           Adrien shrugged. “Then I will no longer model.”
           More stunned silence.
“Adrien,” Gabriel pinched his nose but was cut off.
           Adrien crossed his arms, “You can’t make me model.” He looked around at his three caretakers. “And if you try, I’ll scream loud enough for every reporter in Paris to hear me. And while we’re on the subject; I read something about child labor laws. You’re breaking them. I’ll scream that too. If that doesn’t stop, if I don’t start working normal kid hours and eating a healthy amount of food,” He threw the last part at Nathalie. She had been instructed to keep him on a strict diet. “I’ll go to the police. CPS. The news.”
           Gabriel opened his mouth to speak again but again was cut off.
“Even if you try to keep me in here,” Adrien added. “It will just look worse. People will question where I am. The Brand will hurt. My friends will look for me. They’ll ask questions. They’ll spread what it’s really like for me. How unhappy I am. My fans will riot. Even more when I finally do get out of here and go straight to the police, a reporter; maybe do a tell-all on Alya’s blog. Oh wait, I already left several copies of that already previously recorded interview that will be released if I don’t show up for class for a few days.”
           The three adults stood with opened mouths. Nathalie was the first to recover, “Adrien, we can discuss this…”
“No!” Adrien glared. “I’m done. You worked me to the bone, starved me, neglected me,” He threw that viciously at Gabriel who flinched, “Attempted again and again to isolate me from my friends. All of which is called child abuse. And now you want to control my romantic interests; tell that shrew Rossi to stay the hell away from me. I will never work with her again. Let me make this very clear. I have evidence of the child labor laws broken. I have video proof the various meals I’ve been served that never once met my nutritional intake. Recordings of various times you threatened me with my removal from school if I didn’t meet various demands and achievement. I have witness testimony from other models, my friends, current and former Agreste fashion employees of my treatment. I have no trouble releasing every last bit of information.”
           Adrien took a breath after his rant. “This is my life. I will live it my way. From now on, one third of every paycheck I earn, and I do know the amounts, will be deposited into my personal bank account. The rest of into the saving account mother set up for me. In fact, I want the last six months of checks deposited the same. I want freedom. And if I have to destroy you to get it, I will. Push me, and I’ll push back.” With that, he spun around and left the room. Gorilla followed after him dutifully.
“What do we do?” Nathalie asked. “About Adrien, sir?”
           Gabriel glared harshly at where his son at stood, “What can we do?” As much as it killed him to admit it, his son had them on the edge of cliff and looked rather happy at the idea of pushing them off. “I don’t look good in prison orange.” He sighed. “We’ll get him back under control soon enough.”
           Nathalie nodded. Neither did she. “I’ll call Rossi and tell her plans have changed.” Everything had changed.
           Later that day, Nathalie presented him with his bank card that she taken at Gabriel’s demand and gave him a stiff nod. He turned with a beaming smile to Gorilla, “We’re getting McDonalds!”
           Nathalie let out a cry of protest but was ignored.
           That day Adrien had his first big mac and fries. It was the biggest meal he’d eaten in months, so his stomach hurt a little, but he couldn’t stop smiling.
           He got a call from his father when he was finished. When his dad immediately began to yell at him about not following his diet; Adrian hung up on him. The blond shook his head. He had warned his father; push and Adrien would push back.
           He looked around and spotted some punk skaters skating down the street. Adrien smirked. Oh, he had an idea.
           Marinette had been thrilled when he called to see if she was free to go shopping with him. Less thrilled, when they wound up at Hot topic.
“Why?” The bluenette whined. “Just why? I have so many ideas.”
Over the last two years, the two had become really good friends. They got even close when Chat Noir and Ladybug revealed their identities to each other. Mostly because they lost their crushes on each other. Marinette on Adrien. And Adrien on Ladybug. It was just too weird for either of them.
“This is what I want!” Adrien smiled as he looked through the band Ts and a lot of nightmare before Christmas merchandise.
“But sunshine!” Marinette pleaded. She started to pull out shirts and accessories that look like they would fit Adrien’s build. “Happiness?”
           Adrien laughed, “Storm cloud. Make my father miserable.”
           Marinette paused. “Happiness.” She nodded. She had wanted to stick it to Gabriel Agreste for years; the rotten bastard.
           The girl ended up approving seven potential outfits from Hot Topic. Adrien bought them all. Then Marinette dragged the boy to other various stores. If Adrien was going to punk rock; then it would be a fashion and, dare she say it, chic punk rock look. Though she did have to drag Adrien away from the piercing salon.
           When Adrien got home, Gabriel attempted to discipline him again but was met with stony silence. Adrien pulled out his phone and played a recording of Gabriel chastising Adrien not being thin enough and that his diet would be limited to 1000 calories a day.
           The blond boy raised an eyebrow, “I can have this trending within the hour. Your move.”
           Gabriel growled and stomped off. He had honestly thought his son had been jesting about the recordings, about evidence, or at very least could be cowed not use any of it. He was wrong, apparently; very wrong.
           When Adrien left for school the next mornings, he caused his father to have a panic attack. Gone was the preppy, sunshine child the world was used to. The fifteen-year-old Adrien wore dark green ripped jeans; a studded leather jacket over a black My Chemical Romance shirt. He wore combat boots and eyeliner. “You were warned,” Adrien told his father on his way out of the door. “Keep pushing though.”
“Oh my god, he’s dead,” Nino said to Adrien when he got to class. “Gabriel Agreste.” He started to pretend to tear up. “You want something for so long. And when it finally happens. You wonder what to do.” He suddenly straightened. “I know let’s throw a party. It will end will a conga line over the SOB’s grave.”
“My father’s not dead,” Adrien rolled his eyes as he took his seat in the back. When Marinette had been moved there, he had follow much to the complaints of Lila. “Though it was a pretty close call this morning.”
           Most people hadn’t recognized him as he walked through the halls of the school. It was a relief to just be normal.
           When the other students arrived, he had gotten double glances. The first was when they said hello, then quickly looked again when they realized something was very, very wrong.
“Holy shit,” Juleka said loudly. The loudest anyone had ever heard her speak. She blushed. “Sorry. You look rocking, Adrien.”
           Rose just kept blinking at him. “But, but, team sunshine?” She whispered. Adrien cooed. The two had been dubbed that by the class after a bad storm came in and all the class got soaked but the two kept smiling and trying to cheer people up.
“Team positive?” He offered.
           A squeak let him know, Marinette had arrived. She looked over him, “What did I do?” She sat went to her desk. “What did I do?”
“Not enough,” Nino stated. “A little bit more. And we could’ve been doing the Cha slide over Gabriel’s grave right now. Step your game up, dudette. Cause you’re slacking.”
           Marinette just closed her eyes and prayed for patience; having boys as her best friends wasn’t easy. Adrien and Nino had become her closest friends, after Lila came and tried to tear everyone away from her. She sort of succeeded. Alya was no longer her friend. Neither was Mylene, Sabrina, Ivan, or Kim. Everyone else in chose to believe the girl they’d known forever over the some chick they just met. Unfortunately, this cause Alya and Nino to break up. Nino was fine with remaining a neutral about whether Lila was a liar, though he thought she was, to keep the peace with his girlfriend. But Alya hadn’t budged and kept harping on the situation; about Nino being friend with Marinette. Nino had no choice but to end things which just cause the girl to get even angrier.
“Group selfie?” Adrien asked. “Juleka, you too. Come on, Rose.”
           The five grouped together, and snapped a picture of Adrien’s phone, “Hashtag: new Look, new me. Hashtag: Smells like Teen Spirit.”
           More gasps were heard as Lila and Alya, their posse, arrived. “What happened?” Lila frowned.
“Got a new look,” Adrien grinned.
           Lila glared. She had been warned that Adrien had gotten out of Gabriel’s control but hadn’t believed it. “You won’t wear that on our date to the gala, right?”
“We’re not dating,” Adrien said bluntly. “I’m not going to the gala with you.” He shook his head. “I’ve told you too many times already, Lila. I will never date you. I don’t like you. I have never liked you. I’m sorry.”
           Lila huffed, “Your father!” She started.
           Adrien cut her off, “Can my ass!” He yelled. “I don’t care. Call it teenage rebellion or whatever. But It’s my life. Get over it.”
No, Lila thought, this couldn’t be happening. Adrien was her ticket in. At the gala she’d be on his arm and get attention from all sorts of celebrities.
           Alya bristled on behalf of her friend, “You don’t have to be so mean.”
           Nino glared back, “He wouldn’t have to be if she could take a hint. No means no.”
“He could give her chance,” Alya continued. “How will he know if he really likes or not if he doesn’t.”
“Because he said he doesn’t,” This time it was Rose who spoke. “Adrien, and everyone else, is allowed to decide that they don’t like someone; that they don’t want to date them. You should respect that.”
           Lila started crying, big fake tears rolled down her cheeks, “I like you so much,” She pleaded. “I know you’d like me too if you got to know.”
           Adrien scoffed, “I know exactly who you are, Lila. And that’s the root of why I don’t like you.”
           At this Lila had to force herself not to glare. Fine, she thought, if he wanted to be like that, then she had another card to play. “Marinette put you up to this, didn’t she? She’s been bullying me. And got inside your heard with all her mean words; that’s why you don’t like me.”
  Everyone on Lila’s side turned fierce looks toward the Asian girl, accusation on their tongue.
“How could you?” Mylene asked. “You’ve changed, Marinette.”
“Not cool, Bro,” Kim added. He had been crushing on Lila for months and followed her around like a puppy.
“You’re as bad as Chloe ever was,” Alya shook her head. “I can’t believe you’d hurt Lila over your jealously!”
Adrien wasn’t having it, “I. Don’t. Like. You!” He yelled at Lila. “I didn’t like you the moment you first came to this class. It has nothing to do with Marinette. It’s you. You’re the problem. Get it?  Got it? Good.” He looked at Lila’s friends. “Marinette is not a bully. She is one of my best friends; my sister, even. And unlike you, she actually listens to me; what I want. Not pant after Lila’s every word.”
The class blinked, stunned because they never really heard Adrien tell anyone off before.
“Well, who are you taking to gala,” Lila asked snidely, and gave a quick mean look at Marinette.
“His boyfriend!” Nino suddenly blurted. “Ouch!” He hissed.
           Marinette had kicked the glasses-wearing boy’s chair as hard as she could.
           Adrien just went with it. He had come out to most of the class the year before and never made his sexuality a secret; he liked guys, or at least preferred them. His desire for Ladybug had come from his love had for the freedom he got whenever he was Chat Noir. He was happiest as Chat Noir, and seeing as Ladybug had always been present; he thought he’d be happiest with Ladybug. He was only a little right.
“He’s looking forward to it,” Adrien smiled, or at least, whatever guy he could convince to go with him, hopefully would be.
“What were you thinking,” Marinette hissed at Nino as soon as the bell rang ending first period, and they were in the halls.
“What?” Nino asked. “You’re the only who can make an attempt on Gabriel Agreste? Nope. Don’t think so. First best friend gets dips.”
“I don’t have a boyfriend,” Adrien whispered.
“So, borrow Marinette’s,” Nino shrugged.
           Marinette gasped, “I’m not sharing my boyfriend with Blond Wonder over here.”
“What? Can’t take the competition?” Nino asked.
“I’ll end you, Lahiffe!”
“That’s not a no.”
           Adrien laughed.
           Juleka brushed by him, “I can ask Luka if he’s free,” She asked with a whisper. “If you want.”
           The three paused. It was a good suggestion. “Aurore would come for blood,” Their newest friend had the biggest crush on the guitarist.
           The rest of the school had been interesting. Adrien’s photo was trending; though nearly everyone in school had tried to get look at him.
           When Adrien got home from school that day, it was to Gabriel and Nathalie’s angry looks. They had tried to do damage control. But for everything they released, Adrien had been quick to either deny their claims via tweets. Or lease video on Instagram about his new fashion direction.
“This is enough, Adrien,” Gabriel stated calmly. “You’ve gone too far. You will be escorting Miss Rossi to the gala, and this look will never be seen again. Am I understood?”
           Adrien pulled out his phone, dialed a number, and put it on speak, “Hey man, do you still have that video of my dad pulling me out of school, during an important, test to go to a photoshoot?”
“Sure do.” Nino replied smugly.
“What about all the videos I sent you from overnight shoots?” He asked. “Where I worked like all night. Videos that clearly depicts that child labor laws were broken.”
“Saved on several different clouds.” Nino answered. “I can have them online in five minutes. And sent to the police and CPS in ten.”
“Thanks, talk later.” Adrien disconnected the call. “You were saying?” He asked his father. Silence was all he got. “Thought so. I’m taking my boyfriend to the gala.” He turned around. “I’m going out.”
           Gabriel pinched his nose, “He’ll ruin us.”
“No sir,” Nathalie said. “He’ll destroy us.”
           Adrien showed up at Marinette’s room an hour later, with a pleading look on his face and a box of hair dye.
           Marinette took it with a sigh, “Are you sure it’s not me you’re trying to hurt.”
“It’s not permanent?” He offered weakly. “Should last a week, maybe less. I wash my hair a lot.”
           When Adrien came to school sporting bright blue locks, three girls fainted.
“Awesome,” Nino high-fived the former blond. “How’s your dad?”
“Collapsed and fell down the stairs.” Adrien gave a small smirk. At the sight of Adrien’s hair, Gabriel had clutched his arms and just fell. “He was near the bottom so he was hurt too much.”
“Righteous,” Nino said and turned to look at Marinette in her seat, “What part of bestie gets dibs do you not understand?”
           Marinette crossed her arms and sniffed, “Maybe I’m not the one needs to step their game up.”
“What?” Nino gasped. “Oh it’s on!”
           Nino would later met Adrien and Marinette for ice cream, he’d come on the back of some guy’s motorcycle. “Hey,” Nino waved. The dude he was with gave them a stiff nod and a cocky smirk. He was blond with a cool haircut, tattoos, and two different colored eyes. “This is Jace. I know him through my cousin Simon. He’s seventeen. He has tattoos, drives a motorcycle, dress primarily in black and leather, and he’s been to jail. He agreed to be your date to the gala.”
           Marinette and Adrien just stared. Adrien blinked too hard to shake the shock away, “Wow you really want my dad dead.”
           He blushed red. Jace was rather attractive. He was the type who knew just how hot he was too.
“Hi I’m Marinette,” Marinette waved to Jace. “You’re freakishly hot. And if you manage to take out Nathalie too, I’ll be your best friend.”
           Jace chuckled. This could be fun. Maybe Simon hadn’t steered him wrong when he told him to hang out with his cousin if he had the time. He had research Nino and his friends to the last detail, just in case. “Hi Marinette. I’ll do my best to try. My sister Isabelle and my best friend Clary love your MDC designs. They’d kill for them. Won’t even make it look like an accident.”
           Marinette blushed, “Pull this off and I’ll design the dresses of their dreams for free.”
           Jace fought the urge to wince. Failure was no longer an option. Clary and Izzy would hunt him down if he failed. So would Magnus for that matter. He’d been wanting to meet the young designer since he saw Jagged Stone’s latest red carpet look. And then Alec wouldn’t be happy about his sulky husband… even if he turned Jace into a toad.
           Jace nodded and put an arm around the pink hair boy, “Let’s make it count.” The smaller boy blushed. Jace gave him a wolfish grin. “This is going to be fun.”
           The rest of week had Adrien dodging a whining Lila and her attempts at getting her hooks into him in time for the Gala. She had been Akumatized three times over it. A fourth when Adrien had enough and got her mother to come to school and where truths were revealed.
           Alya still refused to budge on the matter. Lila was Ladybug’s best friend after all. She couldn’t be lying, or so she said. Which caused most the class to groan. Marinette didn’t understand. After Ladybug had disavowed the Ladyblog for too many lies, asked Alya to take down Lila’s stories, and even went as far as getting a new fox hero (Juleka); she thought Alya would’ve wised up now.
           Sabrina who had been converted back to light side after Lila’s mom had confirmed they had only ever lived in Italy other than France, said that Alya was probably just stubborn. She would have to admit that she struggled that she turned her back on her best friend, ruined her relationship with her boyfriend, and been a bad friend to most of the class for nothing. It was a hard pill to swallow.
           Outside of school, his dad and Nathalie’s attempts to get him back under their thumb had gotten desperate. The first time they took his phone and his laptop. He had already gotten a prepaid one hidden in his room, once he got back to his room, he texted Marinette and Nino. Second later, a video of Gabriel ranting at his son for failing to be perfect during a photoshoot and threatening to remove him from school had surfaced. It took the media by storm.
           Less than an hour later, someone knocked on his door.
“Come in,” He called from his bed.
           Nathalie stared at him for a moment. “You posted the video.” She sounded like she still couldn’t believe it. “We didn’t think you would.”
“Now you know better.” Adrien stated. “My things.”
“This will hurt the brand,” Nathalie said as she place his phone and laptop on the bed. “Hurt the business. Stock prices will from the bad press.”
           Adrien put down the book he’d been reading and leaned forward, “Then maybe you and dad will finally learn this is a game you won’t win,” He said. “I’ll see Gabriel Agreste’s entire legacy burned to ashes before I give in.”
“…Your mother would’ve done the same,” Nathalie whispered and was gone from the room before Adrien could say anything else; door closed behind her.
           The day of the Gala, Saturday, Adrien had go to Marinette’s first thing in the morning. He left suit his father had laid out for him the day before in the fireplace. It wasn’t lit but he knew his dad would get the message.
           Marinette had designed him and Nino suits for the dance. Adrien had made sure to add his two best friends to the Gala’s invite list months ago. The host of the Gala’s daughter was a big fan of the blond; it took an autograph or two to get two more invites. Normally, Adrien would wear a classic black suit of his father’s design.
           Adrien wanted something different, something to make everyone talk, something to go with his pink hair. When he told Marinette this, she got a spark in her eyes, and he knew he’d get exactly what he wanted. And he did.
           The pink-haired boy arrived to the Gala on the back of a motorcycle to the stunned faces of the Paparazzi. The valet who took the keys from Jace had looked excited at parking the bike though.
Adrien wore a slim fitted glittery sliver suit, that under the right light reflected a rainbow look, with a black tie and shoes. Jace wore ripped jeans, tight sleeveless undershirt, and his leather jacket. His tattoos on his neck was plain to see and he had on a eyebrow ring he didn’t before. Jace wrapped his arm around Adrien and escorted him inside. Just as the paparazzi suddenly got their senses back.
The pair found Marinette and Nino by the refreshments. They walked right by an angry Lila who looked ready to kill. She’d come with Alya, and how his father managed to swing that on such short notice, Adrien didn’t know. Nino wore a black and green suit. Marinette wore a sparkly midnight blue pixie dress. Marinette’s boyfriend Connor had arrived not after. Connor brought his friend Cassandra who seemed interested in Nino.
           Adrien and Jace danced after speaking with the four a bit. As the two glided across the dance floor, Adrien found it hard to keep an eye out for his father when Jace kept looking at him so…
           Well in a way that left him frazzled.
           However Adrien’s first clue that his father had arrived was the sound of someone choking.
           And then Nino shouted, “Yes, I did it!” Was his second clue.
“Gabriel’s fainted,” Nathalie yelled. “Call for an ambulance.”
“That’s one,” Jace whispered in his ear. “Care to make it Two for Two.”
           Adrien looked thoughtful for a moment before nodding earnestly. A second later, Jace’s lips caught his own. Then they were making out on the dance floor.
“Nathalie’s down,” He heard Marinette cackle. “Poor thing. Must be the stress.”
           The kiss broke. Jace smirked down at Adrien, “Not bad Agreste; might make this a permanent thing.”
            Adrien hid his blushing face in his date’s chest; content to ignore the chaos erupting around them.
           Freedom never felt so good.
5e Olaf, the Beserker build (League of Legends)
Tumblr media
(Artwork by Phroilan Gardner. Made for Riot Games.)
youtube
youtube
Olaf sounds like ProZD’s Archibald voice. Especially Olaf’s voice lines for using his Q it sounds exactly like ProZD’s “Huah! I think that enemy got the point!” Like I’m not crazy right? Please tell me I’m not the only one who hears this.
Anyways Olaf has been on my To Do List ever since I realized that I haven’t made a single champion whose name starts with the letter O. My desire to make Olaf was only further accentuated by the Sentinels of Light event, even if his inclusion in that event could best be summed up with...
Tumblr media
But I won’t ignore Olaf just because the Sentinels of Light event was a flop. He’s still a compelling character that I have actually gotten some requests to make. After all: the dual-axe wielding Barbarian is an iconic image!
I mean, Olaf is probably just going to be 20 levels in Beserker Barbarian so I don’t know why you need me to make a build for that.
GOALS
C'mon, I won't hurt you - We’ll need ways to heal when we harm in the middle of combat.
Death by steel! - Swing axe, throw axe; unga bunga me play Olaf.
The might of Lokfar approaches - I didn’t manage to do so with Mundo but Olaf is going to need to have CC immunity.
RACE
Olaf is a human; feel free to pick a different race like Goliath or even Custom Lineage to justify him being Iceborn but Variant Human is still the best option. Increase your Strength by 1 as well as your Constitution, grab any skill proficiency of your choice as it honestly doesn’t matter much for Olaf (maybe you should’ve been Custom Lineage for Darkvision after all?), and the Primordial language because I’m sure you picked up on the language of the wild.
For your feat you have a choice: Dual Wielder will let you wield two d8 Battleaxes (instead of d6 Handaxes) and also increase your AC by 1 while dual-wielding, but the Fighting Initiate feat will let you grab Two-Weapon Fighting which will let you add your Strength modifier to your second axe’s swing. I persually opted for Dual Wielder as it gives you more benefits overall, and we’ll be getting ways to throw axes without having to hold onto them first.
ABILITY SCORES
15; STRENGTH - I mean, you’re a shirtless Barbarian running around with two axes. You thought this would be a DEX build?
14; CONSTITUTION - The reason you can’t die is because you’re so hardy. Sucks!
13; CHARISMA - Despite Riot’s great attempts at writing you as poorly as possible you do still have some sort of Charisma. Remember that Charisma is force of personality, not necessarily good looks or personal hygiene. Charisma is needed for Intimidation as well as multiclassing.
12; DEXTERITY - You need to be quick on your feet to run at your enemies with reckless abandon.
10; WISDOM - If you were wise you wouldn’t be trying to kill yourself.
8; INTELLIGENCE - You stopped caring about education the moment you were born. Battle is the only thing in your blood!
This build is also quite viable with Point Buy, going for a stat array like 15 / 12 / 14 / 8 / 8 / 14 if you want lower mental stats but higher combat stats.
BACKGROUND
The Uthgardt Tribe Member background from the Sword Coast Adventurer’s Guide is basically the Outlander background but you actually belonged to Freljordian society once. Regardless you do get proficiency in Athletics as well as Survival (”Survival” as in finding food to eat, not as in keeping safe on the battlefield!), a musical instrument or artisan’s tool of your choice (choose whatever you fancy and make your own Olaf, as long as it’s something a warrior would do! I personally opted for Smith’s Tools to sharpen your axes), and a language of your choice (pick whatever language they spoke back in the villages.)
Your background Uthgardt Heritage is the Outlander’s Wanderer feature with extra steps: along with being able to find food and water you are also treated well by nomads and wanderers who have heard of your glorious battles!
THE BUILD
LEVEL 1 - BARBARIAN 1
Starting off as a Barbarian because what else would we be? You get proficiency in two skills from the Barbarian list: Intimidation is an obvious must and Perception will help you find good fights to take!
As a Barbarian you get Unarmored Defense equal to your Dexterity plus your Constitution, which is currently a 13... Well Medium Armor is an option if you want to finally put on a shirt. And of course as a Barbarian you can Rage to deal more damage and resist incoming damage! You can’t cast spells while Raging, but that won’t matter, right? It’s not like I’m about to give you caster levels.
LEVEL 2 - FIGHTER 1
Quickly hopping over to Fighter to further your martial skills. You can grab a Fighting Style like Thrown Weapon Fighting to draw weapons in the same action you make to throw them, and also do +2 damage with thrown weapon attacks. See? Told you we’d be able to throw axes easily!
You also get Second Wind for some not-quite-Lifesteal to keep you in the fight to claim even more glory! Certainly not to stay alive.
LEVEL 3 - FIGHTER 2
Well another Fighter level for Action Surge is certainly worth it, as you can push yourself to destroy your foes!
LEVEL 4 - FIGHTER 3
But we need one more Fighter level to be able to get our axes back after we throw them. Eldritch Knights get Weapon Bond, allowing them to always keep two weapons on hand and never lose them. While bonded with a weapon you can’t be disarmed of them, and you can use a Bonus Action to recall a weapon if it’s not in your hands. My suggestion would be to bond to a Battleaxe and a Handaxe, so you can’t be disarmed of at least one of your main weapons and can also call your thrown axe back to throw it again!
You also get Spellcasting as an Eldritch Knight: You learn two cantrips from the Wizard list, and three spells as well. You may be thinking “wait; didn’t you dump Intelligence?” That is correct, but you don’t need Intelligence to cast Light to see with your dumb human eyes (I mean technically you need Intelligence if you want to cast Light on someone else but it’s probably easier just to light up your axe and throw it at them) or Prestidigitation, which is a better spell for creating bonfires than the actual Create Bonfire spell.
Your leveled spells have to be from either the Evocation or Abjuration schools, but thankfully Absorb Elements and Shield are both from the Abjuration school and also don’t need Intelligence. Protect yourself from damage to have a truly glorious death! Because it’s not like blocking attacks will keep you alive.
You can also learn one spell from any school and uhhhh... Pick your poison between Jump and Longstrider, to make it easier to chase your foes. Are there probably better spells? Yeah, but do they fit Olaf?
Tumblr media
(Artwork by Xiao Guang Sun and West Studios. Made for Riot Games.)
LEVEL 5 - PALADIN 1
Jumping over to Paladin for a few abilities, such as Divine Sense to find some things that will put up a good fight like Fiends, Undead, or... Celestials? I’m sure they hit hard! You can also find a good desecrated (or consecrated) battleground with this ability, as I’m sure there will be good enemies there! You only know of an enemy’s type however, not their name. And if they’re hiding from you this ability won’t make it any easier to find them.
You also get Lay on Hands, which is like lifesteal you can give to allies! You have a pool of hit points equal to your Paladin level times 5, and you can use it to either heal (at a rate of 1 point per hitpoint) or neutralize a poison or disease affecting a target. (5 Lay on Hands health to neutralize one poison or disease.) Dying to natural causes isn’t a glorious death, brother!
LEVEL 6 - PALADIN 2
We’ll also need second level in Paladin to get a Fighting Style, but since Wizards of the Coast hates fun you can’t can’t take Two-Weapon Fighting, and since we’re running around in our birthday suit Defense also isn’t an option. The best official Fighting Style you can take is Blind Fighting (Blessed Warrior is okay too if you want Guidance I guess) but talk to your DM about potentially letting you take Two-Weapon Fighting? It’s not like it’s OP or anything (in all honesty it’s kinda shit.)
Paladins also get... more Spellcasting?! Disgusting! Well this spellcasting is based on your Charisma modifier instead of your Intelligence, which might be why we have it at a 14. But even so you can’t prepare that many spells: Divine Favor will let you empower all your attacks with more damage for some Vicious Strikes, Cure Wounds will again be acting as life-not-quite-steal, and Shield of Faith will let you or an ally absorb more blows, not that you want to live or anything. Also remember to check the Player’s Handbook to see how many spell slots you’d have after mixing two casters together.
But I still think the best course of action for your spell slots is to use them for Divine Smite! Throw caution and magic to the wind to make a Reckless Swing that does extra Radiant damage (depending on the level of the spell slot used.) The Smite deals 2d8 of damage for a first level slot, and an additional d8 of damage for every slot above first. (The simple way to remember this is that you roll a number of d8s equal to the spell slot used plus one.) If the enemy is a Fiend or Undead the damage increases by a d8! The maximum level spell slot you can use for this is a 4th level slot (for 5d8 damage, or 6d8 against a Fiend or Undead), but I doubt we’ll get spell slots that big.
LEVEL 7 - PALADIN 3
We may as well take a third level in Paladin for a Sacred Oath, and you swore an Oath of Glory in battle! Along with Guiding Bolt and Heroism being added to your spell list (as if you can cast spells lmao) you get two Channel Divinity options: Peerless Athlete turns you into... well, a Peerless Athlete with advantage on Athletics and Acrobatics checks. You can also carry, push, drag, and lift twice as much weight as normal, and to top it off the distance of your long and high jumps increases by 10 feet. This boost lasts for 10 minutes which should be more than enough to give it your all in battle!
Alternatively for some more not-quite-lifesteal Inspiring Smite can be activated after you Smite to give yourself or nearby allies within 30 feet temporary hitpoints. The total number of temporary hit points gained by this ability equals 2d8 + your Paladin level, and you can distribute them amongst yourself and your allies however you wish. Technically the most gameplay-accurate way to split the Temp HP would be to take it all yourself but being helpful has its benefits. A battle is truly glorious if fought alongside an army of companions!
You also get Divine Health, because Glory doesn’t die on sick days!
LEVEL 8 - PALADIN 4
It’s about time to take that 4th Paladin level to finally get an Ability Score Improvement: +2 to Strength for stronger axe swings is an obvious choice!
You can also prepare another spell like Bless, which will make it easier for you and your allies to smite your foes and survive their blows! Wait, what was that about surviving?
Tumblr media
(Artwork made for Riot Games.)
LEVEL 9 - PALADIN 5
Since it’s so close we may as well take the 5th level of Paladin so you can finally make an Extra Attack. That means you have two attacks normally and a third attack with your Bonus Action thanks to Two-Weapon Fighting!
You can also prepare second level Paladin spells now, and the Oath of Glory gives you Enhance Ability and Magic Weapon as spells you can cast. Believe it or not these are actually useful, even with your low spellcasting modifier!
LEVEL 10 - PALADIN 6
The 6th level of Paladin is honestly too good to pass up: even though Aura of Protection is only adding +2 to all your saving throws (since your Charisma is kinda uhhh... not good?) that’s still +2 to all your saves, as well as the saves of your allies within 10 feet. That’s like, two whole Rings of Protection!
Speaking of rings: Warding Bond was added to the Paladin spell list thanks to Tasha’s and it’ll let you take damage for your allies to die in their place! As long as you don’t mind wearing some platnium rings in your beard, at least.
LEVEL 11 - PALADIN 7
What we’re really here for is the 7th level of Glory Paladin. Aura of Alacrity will increase the speed of you and your allies within 5 feet (not 10, because Wizards of the Coast are weird) by 10 feet, so you can charge at your foes with the might of Ragnarok!
LEVEL 12 - PALADIN 8
But we may as well take the 8th level of Paladin for another Ability Score Improvement: cap off your Strength for the deadliest strikes possible.
You can also prepare another spell but it would be wise to wait for...
Tumblr media
(Artwork by JoJo So. Made for Riot Games.)
LEVEL 13 - PALADIN 9
9th level Paladins can prepare third level spells like Crusader’s Mantle to give all your nearby allies the Divine Favor buff to rush into battle with you! But the main reason we’re dipping this deep into Paladin is for the two spells from the Oath of Glory: Protection from Energy perhaps isn’t all that fitting, but Haste is insanely useful and powerful. More attacks, more speed, more... armor? Well, it’s no matter. More glorious battle!
LEVEL 14 - PALADIN 10
10th level Paladins won’t be swayed by magic swaying their hearts! Aura of Courage will let you (and your allies within 10 feet) laugh in the face of death as you gain immunity to the Frightened condition!
You can also prepare another spell like Aura of Vitality: you can use it to heal yourself but healing your allies will lead to a far more glorious story to tell of your death.
LEVEL 15 - PALADIN 11
I promise that we’ll go back to Barbarian levels soon but 11th level Paladins get a huge boost to their damage output thanks to Improved Divine Smite. This ability affects all your attacks (not just your Smites despite the name) to give them an extra d8 of Radiant damage. This has obvious synergy with your choice to swing two axes since your Two-Weapon Fighting attack will also get that extra d8 of damage!
LEVEL 16 - PALADIN 12
Okay but let’s quickly grab the 12th level of Paladin first. You can either increase your Constitution for more health and AC, or your Charisma for better saving throws and spellcasting. I personally opted for Charisma but if you value health and AC then Constitution is good too!
Oh and yeah you can prepare more spells, but there aren’t really that many other third level spells I want.
Tumblr media
(Artwork by Alvin Lee. Made for Riot Games.)
LEVEL 17 - PALADIN 13
That’s because 13th level Paladins finally get 4th spells which most importantly means Freedom of Movement! There you go you finally have Ragnarok’s CC immunity! You also get Compulsion which sure would be a good spell if you had any Charisma to actually cast it.
But you can also prepare more spells like Aura of Purity so you and your allies can shrug off whatever your foes might throw at you to stop you from reaching them, or Death Ward which you ABSOLUTELY WILL NOT USE ON YOURSELF.
LEVEL 18 - PALADIN 14
Okay but the 14th level of Paladin gives you Cleansing Touch, letting you cleanse spells without spell slots to cast Freedom of Movement. You can use this feature a number of times equal to your Charisma modifier and regain all expended uses at the end of a Long Rest.
You could also perhaps prepare another spell like... Aid? I don’t know really by this point the magic is secondary. We’ll be going back to Barbarian soon anyways.
LEVEL 19 - PALADIN 15
But 15th level Glory Paladins get Glorious Defense, and we can’t pass that up! When you or another creature you can see (technically an enemy if you so desire!) within 10 feet of you is hit by an attack roll, you can use your reaction to grant a bonus to the target’s AC against that attack equal to your Charisma modifier. If the attack misses you can make one weapon attack against the attacker as part of this reaction, provided the attacker is within your weapon’s range. You can do this a number of times equal to your Charisma modifier, and regain all uses at the end of a Long Rest.
LEVEL 20 - PALADIN 16
But since it’s so close one final level in Paladin would be good for one final ASI: again more Constitution means more health and AC, but more Charisma will boost all your Paladin abilities!
Speaking of Paladin abilities you can prepare one more spell before we start taking more Barbarian levels... honestly you can pick your poison as it won’t matter much when your Raging!
...Wait.
WHY NO BARBARIAN LEVELS?
There’s a lot of things that I can’t do as a Barbarian. The most notable option that would be restricted if I went pure Barbarian would be Freedom of Movement, and while crowd control is somewhat rare in D&D being able to ignore it is far more important to Olaf as a character.
There’s also no Barbarian that has lifesteal besides Path of the Beast, and the only Barbarian that can throw its axe easily is Path of Wild Magic. Obviously neither of these fit Olaf.
Ultimately Paladin gave us more of Olaf’s abilities. The only ability that Barbarians have which fit Olaf other than Unarmored Defense and I guess Unarmored Movement would be Feral Instinct. But even the Barbarian subclasses don’t fit Olaf with the only ones which make any sense being maybe Totem Warrior? (Despite Olaf’s title Berserker wouldn’t fit him well, mostly because Berserker is a bad subclass.) But we miss out on so many of Olaf’s actual abilities by making him a Barbarian.
tl;dr Barbarians can’t do magic and Olaf has a ton of abilities that can only be recreated in D&D with magic
FINAL BUILD
PROS
Urge to kill rising... - Two-Weapon Fighting really doesn’t get the respect it deserves by the D&D community. You wouldn’t be able to get three attacks as a level 11 Paladin in any other way, meaning that you can truly capitalize on Improved Divine Smite. Not to mention the general increased DPS of 3 attacks and 3 chances to Smite!
Faster to battle! - It was not my intention but Glory Paladins are surprisingly good team players with a variety of spells and abilities that can keep your team alive and increase their strength in battle.
Obliteration! - You’re fairly hard to kill... oops. But between decently high health, spells to defend yourself, and damn high saving throws no matter how you increase your Charisma you’ll be quite a challenge to eventually take down! Sure your AC might suck... we should probably talk about that.
CONS
The worth of a man can be measured by the length of his beard, and the girth of his belt buckle - Hey remember that one Barbarian level I took pretty much entirely so you could have Unarmored Defense? Yeah honestly it’s gimping you hard, to the point that even Mage Armor would give you more AC. Honestly playing this build as Fighter 4 / Paladin 16 would be far better as you’d get one more ASI at the cost of actually having to wear armor. Hell going full Paladin 20 would give you the Living Legend capstone which is crazy strong, and while the loss of Action Surge would hurt you can grab the Thrown Weapon Fighting Style with a feat. (Or just take Two-Weapon Fighting style with your Variant Human Feat and run around with Hand Axes.)
If you’re really dead-set on going unarmored beg your DM for a Barrier Tattoo: either a Rare one (you’ll still need 14 DEX for something something legally-not-Medium Armor) or a Very Rare one (so you don’t even have to worry about Dexterity.) You can even go the Tahm Kench route and grab Eldritch Adept for Disguise Self to look unarmored if it’s really that important to you.
Well that was a pretty long con to say “Barbarian Olaf bad.” What else is there?
Chop chop! - Who would’ve guessed that dumping both mental stats would make you a dummy? While Aura of Protection saves you to some extent the party won’t be turning to you for any History checks.
Finally, some fun! - You have a rather silly amount of spells relative to your spell slots, and a good number of them are Concentration as well. Throwing all your slots to the wind to Divine Smite with reckless abandon sounds fun but managing both your Concentration and your spell slots will take some effort.
But your choice to go in without armor is just a self-handicap after all: you really want to die, and prove yourself in death! Fight the toughest fights and take down the strongest foes until you finally prove your prophecy wrong and fall before the blade of the mightiest foe! But perhaps you should instead sit down and have a muffin, and think about why you truly want to die die die.
Magical person in history, on not intervening on human rights issues
I am writing a dating sim/visual novel set in the present day. A major (non-romanceable) character is an ancient sorceress who moved from France to the Pacific Northwest in the 1850s. She is white. She is shown to have powerful magic. She also works closely with the main characters and develops personal relationships with them as she teaches them magic, giving each character comfort and advice during their respective stories.
Considering the events in America around her move-in date, there’s no way she could have missed the horrible human rights abuses going on, and there’s no way she was too powerless to help, even when most of the fighting and slavery was so far away. So I’m having trouble balancing “don’t make her a white savior by having her personally fireball Robert E. Lee” against “Hogwarts University is cancelled because Dumbledorette didn’t care about slavery.” I had the idea that the magical regulating body back home in France didn’t want her to intervene due to political reasons, so she helped out in small ways that could safely fly under the radar. She later realized that she prioritized her social standing over the suffering of countless others, so she began making a point of reducing human suffering as much as she could.
I can’t imagine this will show up in more than one small scene, but doing it wrong could really sour the whole thing. Is this backstory still icky? Should I just not mention it and let readers headcanon what they please?
I’m wondering what you think was happening in the PNW at the time for the fighting and slavery to be “far away.” Washington State had the Cayuse War at exactly this time period, Oregon didn’t ratify treaties and was calling for the extermination of “the I*dian race” in roughly this time period, and California’s Gold Rush created the California Genocide starting heavily in the 1840s, picking up steam in the 1850s, which included slavery of California Natives thanks to a law enacted in 1850 that lasted for 13 years.
This is all from the top five results of googling “pacific northwest genocide 1850”, for the record. It’s not exactly hidden history.
So suddenly your character’s lack of movement in healing the poisoned populations as disease ravaged the area, in attempting to stop or at least buy and free the enslaved Natives being auctioned on their doorstep, or in attempting to get treaties ratified and honoured looks a lot more damning.
This is not counting any of the future events that happened at the turn of the century, including the Chinese Exclusion Act, the Hawai’i monarchy being overthrown, and Federal Order 9066, which is the WWII concentration camps (that included Japanese, German, and Italian individuals). This is just to name a handful of coastal issues in the next 100 years, completely ignoring Jim Crow, residential schools, the San Francisco Earthquake (which nearly had Chinese people relocated to the worst land imaginable for gentrification purposes, had the Empress of China not stepped in), and many others.
In short: she would have had hundreds of opportunities to end suffering, and focusing on a single event as a small scene feels disproportionate to how much she could have done.
And honestly? The French were no angels.
The Second French Colonial Empire was one of the largest empires in history, and it began in 1830, covering roughly a third of Africa. The First French Colonial Empire began in the 1600s, and had both India and North America, primarily Canada.
She was white. French. You don’t specify her birth year other than “ancient”, but considering the sheer amount of territory-grabbing France has been doing since Normandy invaded England in the eleventh century AD, I’m going to assume her birth year is somewhere more recent than that. Therefore, I’m going to assume she has been around the Catholic Missionary Attitude that France had; one could call that attitude the bedrock of its existence for at least a millennia (and is still visible in modern day).
So tell me: when did she break out of it? What made her even care about human atrocities, when she has likely grown up watching France commit them her entire life?
Because let me just say, she has had plenty of opportunities to realize she did nothing in the face of her neighbours’ hatred of people not like them, and she has never taken them before.
Did she (or her parents, if she was born around this time) decry Napoleon re-introducing slavery in France in 1802? Side with Haiti when it declared independence in 1804, and hate that the government forced Haiti to pay for the “theft” of slaves and land (that was only paid off in 1947)? Is she presently championing for France to pay Haiti the money it wrongfully took from the country? Did she hate the delays in stopping the French slave trade, which took 11 years to actually stop after it was banned on paper?
Unconditional emancipation was only reached in 1848, after all. I don’t care if she was born in 1830, there was some sort of major racial event happening in France all throughout the late 1700s to mid-1800s. Where did she side then?
Abolitionism was not an unknown concept in France, so it is possible she had already been working towards it quietly, but that would mean she would have felt guilt at inaction much earlier, depending on when she began decrying slavery—if she was even delayed in decrying it, which I will admit is possible.
And if she was an abolitionist, would she have even listened to the French government in not at least easing the genocide around her? Because she would have watched nearly 100 years of the French dragging their feet on stopping slavery in their empire, and known how BS it all was… if she saw it that way.
That’s just abolitionism, and is not even counting the French relationship with the Native population in Quebec and the Great Lakes region, which is a giant tangle of proxy wars, colonialism, missionary work, and very, very, very complex relationships that started off good and ended terribly.
So I ask again: why did she only start caring then?
Speaking of proxy wars, the Napoleon Empire wanted a Confederate victory, because the Confederacy was its source of cotton and the American Civil War created a “cotton famine” in France that basically forced the textile industry into a massive downsizing. The Confederacy also tolerated Napoleon’s plans for expanding the empire in Mexico, which actually had begun in December of 1861.
So when it comes to how a magical board would rule—even though France was officially neutral in the war, the court of public opinion (among politicians and capitalists) was more on the Confederate side than the Union side. Many politicians secretly worked with the Confederacy, until they abandoned them when the Union showed signs of winning. The only reason France officially remained neutral is because a war with the British was inevitable if they acknowledged the Confederacy, and Napoleon didn’t want that.
I shall work under the assumption that because it was rather literally on her doorstep when she moved to America, she lost insulation to it (if she hadn’t thought about it before), but I will say how iffy that makes her look in the long term if she had so many opportunities beforehand (at the very least, seeing slaves in France).
My other option is the word “ancient” is liberally applied and she was only in her 20s or 30s when 1850 hit, and therefore had not had many opportunities to see otherwise (but she still would have seen slaves in France, likely).
Onto the white guilt and white saviour aspects
Strictly from a writing perspective, you have to determine if she changed the course of history, or not. This would not necessarily be within the realm of white saviour, seeing as white people were the only ones listened to at the time. You can see people who changed the course of history in this period by looking up the pastor who insisted Lincoln hold fair trials for the Dakota, which brought the execution count from over 200 down to 38. You can also look at Alice Fletcher, who made quite a few laws designed to protect Native people, but whether or not they were successful is up for debate (and she regretted some of the laws she helped enact).
If not, then you have the current tangle you’re dealing with.
Option 1
She was unestablished in America and relied on the magical regulations board to protect her, and she figured working small and under the radar would mean she could do more good long-term by not being killed, so long as you establish that such a threat is viable.
This option only works if she’s an active advocate for the slew of other racist acts that pass once she’s settled in America, of which I gave many examples above.
Option 2
She actually did change the course of history in perhaps a mixed way, or perhaps a positive way. She could have relied completely on being a white, well-to-do voice in the community, which would have granted her some privilege without using a drop of magic.
This can apply to any point in history, seeing as there were a lot of others to pick from. It would be particularly useful once suffrage was achieved, and if she was part of suffrage, did she call out Susan B. Anthony’s racism? Did she encourage allowing non-whites to vote?
Option 3
She was slow to care, and did not actually understand what a big deal it was that such atrocities were happening until it was too late. This leads to her dedication to atonement the strongest, but you have to be careful about white guilt. This option can go along with option 1.
This allows her to be a passive player in future racist events, but makes her an even more privileged white character who PoC will have a hard time seeing as kindly, and you should go out of your way to show white players how unkind and privileged she was, and perhaps still is.
Option 4
she doesn’t actually care much, because she has a president of not caring about atrocities happening in France, and her bigotry shows up in other ways in modern day and she’s just a kindly-but-bigoted character. She’s your wonderful grandma who you have beautiful memories with… she just doesn’t care about anyone not white.
This can go along with option 3, as she was so slow to realize that she is still bigoted and hasn’t done any work, but her racism is going to be more covert and you’ll have to do research on microaggressions and how to frame them.
Based off the way her lack of action is framed in-story and how little a plot role it plays, I would say that option 4 with a dash of option 3 appears to be the most likely interpretation of her character by PoC. She’s lip-service to progress, at present, but seems to have made no strides in losing her social standing to be an ally.
Now here’s why I don’t think you should let readers headcanon her however they want:
White players in particular are going to minimize her culpability in what happened, and think that she did all that she could, and she is a Totally Redeemed Character now. In fact, they’ll probably wonder why she’s even an Atoner, because she did something, right? She helped, right? And now she’s helping and that’s plenty. She’s good to the players, so she is a Good Person.
Meanwhile PoC players are going to see yet another white author ignore the fact that colonialism was happening en masse at the time, and that white people deeply benefited from it, and are going to see the “it happened in the past why do you keep bringing up racism?” defence continued.
Let her be flawed. Let her be on stolen land and acknowledge it every time she teaches them something, and let her sit and exist in the guilt that happens when she realizes she could have stopped the theft but didn’t. Let her not wallow in self hate, but acknowledge her mistake with every lesson the main characters receive, and let her work on righting that wrong by championing “land back” causes that centre Indigenous voices.
Let her dialogue options show every trace of how the past is not over because the past’s actions are still being felt and reparations have not been made. The settler state is still controlling the land she has made home and she knows exactly what they did to get it, and she passes that knowledge on.
Let players be uncomfortable with the knowledge that, if they sit by and “only do small things when they can, to not lose anything”, they are complicit. Let white people see they must well and truly denounce what has been given to them by their racist, colonial ancestors in order for PoC to “stop talking about racism.”
Make her use whatever income she makes be paid in part to Native causes, as rent for the land she occupies unfairly. Make her refuse to teach bigoted students who want “mystic secrets” that aren’t hers to give, that were appropriated centuries ago. Make part of her life’s work be hiding away Black and Indigenous spiritual leaders to minimize the loss.
Let her past be imperfect. And do not force redemption on her, but instead let her own the fact she made catastrophic mistakes that will not be redeemed until land has been returned to the Native population. Until all forms of slavery are abolished. Until colonial powers give back all the resources and finances they stole from their colonized regions. Until the privilege that white people spilled so much blood to secure is no more.
Because if you want her to truly be a good character who does not support racism? That is the level you have to step towards.
Everything else is simply whiteness trying to make itself feel better.
Could I request a story where Bill gets jealous because MC (gender neutral) is spending more time time with Barnaby Lee? I saw some drawings where Bill got jealous of MC hanging out with Barnaby and Charlie tells him MC was also wearing Barnaby’s sweatshirt and that’s where I got the idea from!
No problem! I think I saw those drawings some time ago, I really tried to find it in the tags but I couldn’t :(
Anyways, here it is! I hope you guys like it!
Title: Weasley’s Woes
Generally known for his calm and collected demeanor, Gryffindor Prefect, Bill Weasley was considered, all-around, a cool guy. Considering this reputation, it was safe to say that most students were surprised when he stamped into the library wearing a menacing look.
“What’s up with you?” Asked Charlie, clearly amused, “get into a box of Pepper imps before you came?” he sniggered, earning a harsh hush from Madame Pince as Bill slammed his book against the oak table.
“Whatever, Charles,” grumbled Bill, aggressively flipping the pages of his Advanced Transfiguration book. Charlie was so surprised by his older brother’s behavior that he set his book down to stare questioningly at him.
Feeling Charlie’s gaze on him, Bill furrowed his eyebrows and grumbled to himself as he continued flipping the pages of his book.
“William, if you’re not caref-” but before Charlie could warn his brother, his words were cut off by the unmistakable ripping noise of a book page and Bill’s frustrated groan.
“Mr. Weasley,” snapped Madame Pince, “I will not warn you again”
Muttering a small apology, Bill frustratedly shut his book and leaned back in his chair, a noticeable scowl on his face.
“So,” Charlie spoke up, “Are you going to tell me what’s bothering you or are you going to act like Percy after Fred and George take his toys?” Charlie did not flinch when Bill shot him another threatening look, instead, he waited quietly for his brother to speak.
“Fine,” sighed Bill deeply, crossing his arms over his chest, “I’m just upset about something”
Charlie let out an audible scoff, “Yeah, anyone could’ve gathered that. I thought a giant was stomping around when you walked in!”
“I thought you were supposed to be making me feel better,” muttered Bill, his frustration rising again, “because you’re not doing a very good job at it”
“How am I supposed to help you when you’re not straightforward with me?” asked Charlie patiently, returning to his book as Bill calmed down.
Bill contemplated his options, he could either tell his brother and get over his frustration quickly or just internalize it and spend the rest of his school year in anger.
Both options seemed acceptable to him.
“It’s (Y/N),” He stated plainly, deciding against internalizing his feelings, “I think (Y/N) might have feelings for Barnaby,” admitted Bill, a small tinge of pink appearing on his cheeks.
Charlie quickly covered up his laugh with a cough, earning another disappointed look from Madame Pince in the process. He acknowledged her with a wave, subtly bowing his head in apology before turning to his brother, who was clearly unenthused.
“Well,” Charlie started, “They have been spending a lot of time together, but I don’t think (Y/N) is interested in Barnaby,” he reassured, recalling the conversations he would share with (Y/N) in their care of magical creatures class.
“But you should hear (Y/N)!” exclaimed Bill in a whisper, “Do you know how many times I’ve heard about Barnaby and his favorite creature? Even when we’re alone, it’s honestly a little frustrating.”
“It’s frustrating because you fancy (Y/N),” Charlie stated bluntly, enjoying the look of shock on Bill’s face, “Well, am I wrong?” he asked.
It was as if Bill was a deer Charlie had caught in his headlights, his mouth fell agape and he stared back at his brother, who, again, did not flinch.
Was it truly that obvious? It was no doubt that (Y/N) and Bill spent a lot of time together, Bill was one of (Y/N)’s closest friends and usually accompanied them on their missions. He had even gifted (Y/N) one of his old Christmas jumpers for their birthday after they expressed their love for the comfortable material.
(Y/N) walked around Hogwarts wearing Bill’s jumper like a second skin, almost always obtaining stares from the other students. The large golden ‘W’ immediately catching the eye of those who looked towards it, inciting speculation of the nature of their relationship.
“Bill Weasley wouldn’t give his jumper to just anybody!” said a sixth-year Hufflepuff girl, a frown clearly evident on her face as (Y/N) passed with Bill, “This must mean they’re together, right?”
The group of girls glanced over at the pair headed down the corridor, observing Bill closely to see if he would secretly make a move.
“It must be,” agreed her friend, “Let’s go ask around to see.”
Rumors at Hogwarts traveled like fiendfyre through the four houses, by the end of the day almost everyone was aware of (Y/N)’s new article of clothing and made no effort to hide their stares.
“Well, you’re right,” admitted Bill, determinedly keeping his gaze away from Charlie’s, “I just thought I would finally ask them out, but I won’t do it if they like Barnaby.”
“I can’t believe my ears,” Charlie sighed in disappointment, “My brother scared to ask someone out?” he said, shaking his head disapprovingly before a smile appeared on his face, “We’ll just have to get your confidence up.”
“And how do you plan on doing that?” asked Bill while rolling his eyes at his brother’s statement.
“I’ve got a couple ideas,” shrugged Charlie, “but if you want to see (Y/N) marching around in Barnaby’s sweater, I think I saw them wearing it in the Great Hall,” he added casually, smirking at Bill’s look of irritation.
With that, the two Weasley brothers scooped up their school materials and determinedly strode out of the library with Charlie explaining his plan along the way.
After receiving Charlie’s briefing, Bill made his way towards the Great Hall with a concerned look plaguing his features.
“Are you sure this will work?” asked Bill, straightening his maroon and gold tie in his bedroom mirror as Charlie messed with the trinkets on his nightstand.
“Totally,” reassured Charlie, happily rolling Bill’s crystal ball in his hands, “You’re jealous so all you have to do is make (Y/N) jealous!” he stated, setting the ball down returning to sit on Bill’s bed.
“I hope you’re right,” muttered Bill reluctantly, “So, all I’ve got to do is flirt with a couple of girls and (Y/N) will come by?”
“Pretty much,” Charlie stated, “Think you can handle that?”
“Of course I can,” snapped Bill confidently, striding out of his dormitory without another word.
In all honesty, he wasn’t sure if he could handle it, but he didn’t have a lot of options to choose from so he decided to follow Charlie’s “master-plan”. Pushing open the doors of the Great Hall, Bill’s eyes landed immediately on (Y/N) who was sitting peacefully at their house table.
Bill scanned his surroundings for a suitable person to execute his plan on, but struggled to find a student above the third-year. Feeling defeated, Bill turned to exit the Great Hall but was halted by another student grabbing his arm.
Startled, he turned to face the sixth-year Hufflepuff girl, immediately noticing the mischievous grin on her face.
“I’ve got a question,” she asked plainly, allowing her fingers to linger on Bill’s bicep before she released it, “Are you currently seeing anyone?”
Bingo
A smirk spread across Bill’s face, his eyes darting back to (Y/N) who had noticed his presence, “No, I’m not,” he answered confidently, hoping his voice traveled far enough for (Y/N) to hear.
“Brilliant!” the Hufflepuff girl exclaimed, “We all thought you were with (Y/N), we really couldn’t understand why you gave them your sweater”
The confident look on Bill’s face vanished as he listened to the girl speak, “What do you mean by that?” he asked carefully, his eyebrows furrowing at the fixed smile on her face.
The Hufflepuff girl laughed snobbishly, “Well, it’s just that someone like you, should be with someone like–”
“What?” interrupted Bill, the anger clearly evident in his voice, “someone like you?” he sneered, quickly wiping the gratifying smile off the girl’s face.
At this point, most of the students were tuned into the altercation occurring at the center of the hall. His original plan of making (Y/N) jealous vanishing as he glared down at the girl in front of him, “I don’t appreciate you talking about (Y/N) like that,” he said dangerously.
Multiple heads turned to look at (Y/N), who now wore an embarrassed expression as a blush crept up to their cheeks. As a prefect, it wasn’t unusual to see Bill scolding other students in public, but this was an entirely different conversation.
This time, Bill was glaring down at a student as if she had broken all the school rules.
“No! That’s not what I meant!” The Hufflepuff girl exclaimed, raising her arms defensively, clearly aware that she had struck a nerve.
“Either way,” shrugged Bill, the smirk returning to his face, “I’ll have to report you to Professor Sprout for bullying another student,” he stated, pointing at the Prefect’s badge on his chest, “It’s my job, you see?”
“Bill,” a familiar voice spoke up behind him, “It’s alright, she didn’t hurt my feelings,” said (Y/N) softly, greeting their friend with a smile as he turned to face them.
“(Y/N),” Bill muttered breathlessly, a blush appearing on his face as he caught sight of their pearly-white smile, “Are you sure?” he asked, his heartbeat quickening when (Y/N) grabbed his hand reassuringly.
With a single glance at their hands, the Hufflepuff girl stomped off with a shrill huff, joining her friends at her house table.
“Definitely,” (Y/N) grinned, “She’s not worth it anyway, but thank you for standing up for me”
A soft smile appeared on Bill’s face, squeezing (Y/N)’s hand as he reached up to tuck a strand of their hair behind their ear, “I’d do anything for you,” he muttered, his blue eyes locking with their (e/c) ones.
Then it hit him.
He didn’t need to pretend to around (Y/N). If he wanted (Y/N) to know how he felt, he needed to be completely honest with them, like they would like him to be.
“Bill?” (Y/N) questioning, the blush on their cheeks deepening as Bill stepped closer to them, his eyes never leaving theirs.
“I’d do anything for you because I fancy you, (Y/N),” Bill admitted confidently, his free hand cupping the side of their cheek, “I’ve been wanting to tell you for a while, but I thought you might fancy Barnaby…”
“Barnaby?” (Y/N) chuckled in surprise, “We’re just good friends, Bill… You’re the one I truly have a crush on.”
Overwhelmed with happiness, Bill wrapped his arms tightly around (Y/N), effectively lifting them off their feet in excitement, “Yes!” he exclaimed, all his worries melting away as (Y/N) returned his hug.
“I’d like to formally take you on a date,” Bill stated blissfully, “Next Hogsmead weekend, I’ll pay for your lunch and everything!”
“I love to go on a date with you, Bill.” (Y/N) grinned, pressing a kiss against Bill’s warm cheek before gleefully exiting the Great Hall.
Grinning to himself, Bill picked up a sandwich from the Gryffindor table and made his way out of the hall, determined to tell his brother he didn’t need his help after all.
Hello! I really love your writing and I just saw your requests are open yay 👏🏻 So my idea is that the reader (female or neutral, as you prefer it) is a third year who takes art lessons as an extracurricular subject or something and the teacher ask their students to draw posters of the sport teams, and the reader got the volleyball team. The thing is the reader knows the third years but they're not really close, so they talk just a bit. (Part 1)
a/n: definitely not my best work and im super sorry for that, but i hope you still enjoy it 👉🏻👈🏻
a warm spring breeze blew strands of your hair in front of your face, laying against your rosy cheeks as you watched the horizon. the bright yellow sun teased the sky with hues of pink and orange, bound to mix into the darkness of the sunset. school had ended a few hours ago and now you were sitting in your art club waiting for your teacher to dismiss you. she was in a middle of a spiel explaining your next art project, but your brain struggled to follow.
your hand ached from drawing for hours, your wrist tender from constant pressure, and now you could’ve sworn you were going to get carpal tunnel sooner or later. it was worth it, anyway, you were doing what you liked doing as you honestly felt being an artist was your only talent. it was merely the only thing you focused on besides your academics. dating was certainly out of the question.
instead, you watched the birds fly past the open classroom window as your teacher explained the assignment something along the lines doing sports teams posters.
“i will be walking around the classroom with a box filled with names of sports clubs,” the teacher starts, pulling you out of your train of thought as your attention was finally set on her. “you will pick a random piece of paper from the box and that will be the sports team you will be making a club poster for.”
whispers erupted in the room as others verbalized which team they wished to get.
“i hope i get the volleyball team, they’re literally iconic.” you heard one girl say.
another voice exclaimed, “drawing the equestrian team sounds super fun too!”
the murmurs continued to the buzz even after the majority of the class had already picked out their sports team from the box. you were the last one to choose as you opted to sit in the back of the class.
“and last but not least,” said your teacher as she serpentine through the desks towards your sitting figure.
your hand dug into the small cardboard box only to feel one last piece of paper. you wanted to scoff slightly, but you stopped yourself the moment you grabbed the last slip of paper and read the messy handwriting. it took you a good second to even understand what it said as it was complete chicken scratch (no offense to the teacher).
“(y/n), what did you get?” your friend who sat in front of you turned with a smile on her face.
"i got the volleyball club,” you answered, eyes widening when your friend gasped.
“that’s literally the best one to get! i’m so jealous,” she sighed as if she just inhaled a rose scented breeze.
perhaps you were lucky to get such a sought after sports team as your main focus for the assignment, but you couldn’t help but feel an overbearing weight suddenly falling upon your shoulders. shiratorizawa’s volleyball team was the epitome of the academy. they were the ones who brought a significant name to the school with only the smartest of intellects but one with the best athletes. depending on how well you created this poster could potentially make or break your reputation. it was a visual representation of the team, anything less than iconic would dig a deeper hole for you.
it certainly doesn’t help the fact that you actually had to talk to the volleyball team now that you were in charge of their school poster. you internally groaned. you barely interacted with the third years, let alone being completely enamored over a familiar red-head.
your after school activities had ended in the midst of your running train of thoughts as you absentmindedly gathered your things and walked out of the classroom. you gripped the handle of your bag as you strolled through the near-empty hallways of the academy, your mind in a complete spiral as you had already tried visualizing what the end product might look like.
it was common knowledge to everyone who had known about you was well aware how amazing you were at art. no matter what medium you were given, you were known to be the girl who had magical hands that could create even the most beautiful things out of ash and smoke. you had this some innate, almost magical ability to have others stop in their tracks just to admire your works.
perhaps that you were too caught up in your own thoughts and the hypnotic tapping rhythm of your loafers clicking against the school floors that you hadn’t even notice your arrival towards the gym.
even the loud shouts of volleyball players from the ongoing practice wasn’t enough to pull your gaze away from the ground and towards the flying volleyball hurdling towards you.
“(y/l/n), watch out!” you heard a familiar voice shout out, immediately pulling you out of your own jungle-like psyche and into the real world.
everything had happened so quickly, all you knew was a blur fly past you to retrieve the ball before it knocked out of conscious. semi eita quickly turned to you, his figure greatly towering over you as he gave you a reassuring smile. “are you okay, (y/l/n)?”
you gulped, nodding almost too quickly. “yeah, i’m okay.”
“good,” he mutters as his brows slightly furrow in confusion. there was a thin blanket of awkwardness hovering above both of your heads as you both stood there in silence for a good five seconds—five seconds too long that is. “so what brings you here?” he finally breaks it, scratching the back of his head in the mean time.
right, you had almost forgotten why you were here in the first place.
“it’s about the art club, we’re doing sports team posters and i was wondering if i could talk to the third years for ideas.” you asked gently.
semi’s eyes immediately widened, the already prevalent smile on his face only increased at the statement. “that’s cool! come with me, i’ll show you to them.” he quickly motioned you to come inside the gym, feeling the brisk air difference of the air conditioned gymnasium to the warm spring breeze outside.
a shiver flowed down your back. not from the sudden influx of cold air surrounding your body, but the fact that towering volleyball players and their ever-so-intimidating nature causing nervous habits to take over you. soekawa jin, the vice captain of the team quickly flickered a look towards you before tapping ushijima’s arm for his attention. turning to see what his teammate wanted, soekawa swiftly pointed at you and semi approaching.
“it’s a surprise seeing you here, (y/l/n).” ushijima greets you in his deep, guttural voice. it caused you to gulp nervously, struggling to even put on the tiniest of smiles as you meekly muttered a ‘hi’ to the rest of the third years. however, it seemed as if the one you were most familiar with was not in sight. it did seem a tad bit quiet in the gym now that the practice game was on a time out.
“um,” one of the wing spikers approached you, ohira reon was it? “sorry for almost hitting you, by the way.”
you swiftly shook your head, “no, it’s okay. i was the one who wasn’t playing attention, so that’s on me.”
“so, you’re here for the poster?” ushijima cut into it like a sharp knife, bold and straight to the point.
“yeah, um, i just stopped by to ask if you guys had anything ideal you want to see on your club poster.” your voice was softer than you hoped it would be when you spoke.
eyebrows furrowing, ushijima glances among his teammates as provocation for an option saturated his hums of curiosity.
semi then clears his throat, “we’re not really sure if we have any input for you, (y/n). besides, i think your poster will be amazing nevertheless.”
“that’s still a lot of pressure,” you mutter, “considering i would be mauled to death if this poster isn’t amazing.” sarcasm drenched your words like saccharine, hoping that the tall athletes would at least get your banter and share a laugh with you.
but they didn’t. instead, they stared with wide eyes at you in a mere worrying glance. perhaps the joke didn’t exactly translate well.
god, this is so awkward.
however, it wasn’t like you were exactly lying. as the face of shiratorizawa academy, you were aware that they needed to look good and if it were any less than that, you might never see the light of day ever again. not to mention you always liked adding twists to your artwork, which was technically the only reason why you were so infamously known to have such amazing works. but in the past half hour, you’ve came to the conclusion that it possibly isn’t the best option in this case.
“i’m kidding, by the way,” you let out a light huff.
“well, if it helps you in any way, you could always focus on ushijima as he is our ace.” soekawa cuts in, patting the captain’s back the moment he braided his arms over each other.
any form of leftover conversation (or lack thereof) was sliced—cut off from the sudden opening of the gymnasium doors and the (quite obnoxiously) loud middle blocker. tendou satori entered the giant gym with a bright beaming face of glimmering lights and cherries. tendou was perhaps one of the first people to talk to you the moment you entered this academy, eyes glazed in a honey-like optimism with every bright ‘hello.’ you always tended to be the quiet and secluded one in your classes with him despite being known to be infamously sardonic, you seemed to be the only one to which his overly comic ways of banter didn’t annoy you like it did with others. he, himself, was a sunray, and yet you couldn’t bring yourself to expose that thought as your eyes fall onto the approaching boy.
out of all the third year volleyball players, you and tendou had talked the most, yet considering you two as more than just mere acquaintances was a bit of a reach.
“yo!” the redhead’s loud voice thundered throughout the gym and you could already feel it echo within your heart.
“you’re back,” mused ohira with his hands on his hips. “are you okay?”
“yeah,” tendou says, fixing the loosened athlete’s tape over his fingers. “but the school nurse was already gone by the time i got there, so i had to fix myself up—oh hey, (y/n)!” he had cut himself off the moment his eyes fell upon yours.
your breath had hitched the moment he greeted you. it was as if your heart had immediately jumped into your throat and prevented you from even muttering a word as you can already feel your palms getting clammy. “hey,” you mutter almost in a whisper.
“so what are you doing here?” questioned tendou as his eyes suddenly widen the moment the words came out of his mouth, “uh-that sounded really rude, um—i actually meant that in the nicest way possible, by the way.”
you couldn’t help but chuckle at his sudden burst of scattered thoughts, noticing a faint flush of pink upon his cheeks.
“she’s here for the club poster,” ushijima answers in your place as you seemed to not answer even after a beat had passed.
“oh nice! i’m sure it’ll look really cool!” the middle blocker grinned at you to which a sudden wave of monarch butterflies attacked your gut. you could even feel the heat coursing through your cheeks and all the way to the tips of your ears until they were as red as tendou’s hair.
“hopefully,” you modestly commented, eyes then falling upon tendou’s wrapped wrist and couldn’t help but be filled with curiosity. “what happened to  you?”
the middle blocker shook his head dismissively. “i tried blocking one of ushijima’s spikes again, but as you know, it is a bit impossible and i ended up hurting myself. it’s no biggie, though.” he shrugs.
“t-that’s amazing.” you breathed out before you could catch yourself. and you swore, you saw the light pink hues of blush upon tendou’s face had darkened.
how cool, you thought with the stars in your eyes. the thought was a bit controversial, but you couldn’t but find tendou satori cooler than ushijima at that very moment. the fact that he knew very well how difficult and painful it was to block his spikes, tendou still attempted it to the point at the cusp of being injured. you began fiddling with your fingers for far too long as you’ve come to realize how long you were standing there for no more reason. you mentally face palmed as you cleared your throat, “anyway, if you guys do have any preferred ideas let me know before friday.”
before the boys could even say a proper goodbye, your legs were already carrying you towards the exits of the gymnasium as if it was running on autopilot. she did hear their shouts of good lucks from across the room as your long strides pushed you to quickly leave.
why was i so awkward for?
Tumblr media
in retrospect, perhaps you were more nervous than you thought. it had been an entire week since you had received the assignment to create a club poster for the volleyball team and there hadn’t been a night filled with peaceful sleep. instead, they were brimming with 2am moments of inspired antics. working on the large poster filled you with nothing but utter confidence even after it was finished, but now that you were actually at school with the rolled up poster of the incredible volleyball team, you couldn’t help but feel waves of reluctance and insecurity.
it was always like this with you. where everything was fine and your confidence within your works were expected, but the moment you did have to present such things, you couldn’t help but think of what you should’ve done differently. you assumed that you could’ve improved your mixed media skills by a little bit as there wasn’t much you could’ve done either way in that murky little head of yours that obviously lacked sleep.
the hallways of shiratorizawa were still pretty empty as it was still quite early in the morning. most of the students were outside anyway, so you quickly took this chance to unroll the large poster. taking some push-pins from the side pocket of your school bag, you hung the poster up in it’s place.
you breathed out one last sigh of ichor before picking up your bag and walking away from the masterpiece.
throughout the entire day, you had come across dozens of stares of others as you walked through the hallways, bringing your endless sea of nerves to heighten until you were dragged upon its tides. there were whispers everywhere. they were probably talking about your poster for the volleyball club and immediately you felt drowned in sorrow.
within a snap, had already thought of the worse possible outcomes that others were talking about how terrible of a job you did. perhaps that leap of faith, that tiny step out of the box when creating your poster was too much of a risk that you ended up falling to your own demise.
“(y/n)!” a voice called from behind you.
turning over your shoulder, you saw a familiar redhead making his way towards you in a bright amble. you immediately felt your heart drop as you whip your head back around and started to walk away.
shit, shit shit. you thought, tendou was definitely not the first person you wanted to talk to you when the possibilities of what he had to say to you was tangling in your psyche. as if they were tangled vines yearning to be untangled for his closure and yet, you refused.
your shoes clicked rapidly against the floors of the school when suddenly your wrist was pulled back, turning towards his familiar tall figure.
your direct gaze was on his chest, but you couldn’t bring yourself to look up upon his eyes. you couldn’t, at least. as if you were, your face would resemble something similar to a tomato.
“listen, tendou.” you muttered, still not attempting to meet his gaze. “i’m kind of late for class, but if you want talk later then we can—”
“no, i want to talk now,” he stated seriously, almost too seriously as it caused you to look up to him in surprise.
your mouth gaped to say something, yet nothing seemed to come out.
“i just wanted to say thanks for the poster.” tendou says as his breath almost hitched from the mere sight of you. he could recall the rushing feeling of blood coursing towards his cheeks and ears the moment he stepped upon school grounds and saw your poster. there his painted figure was, stood more prominently than the rest of his team. it was as if he needed the taste of sweet-tongued cough syrup just to ease his aching cheeks from smiling so hard.
the feeling was amazing. that from the smallest little action of you focusing on him rather than what he thought was going to be ushijima (like always) it was you who chose him. the loud middle blocker over the incredible ace of shiratorizawa. he knew validation wasn’t everything, and yet, his immense feeling of being at the top of the world certainly didn't help the fact that he had always been in love with you. you and tendou had the same class each and every year, that each first day of school, he would always sit giddily at his desk just so he could watch your angelic figure walk in.
in spite of it all, from his loud and upfront nature, he could never bring himself to even talk to you everyday besides an occasional ‘good morning’ whenever you would walk in. perhaps seeing this poster of himself was a little push into the deep end—to finally grow the guts to spill his unspoken epiphanies of built up feelings for once.
“usually, it’s ushijima who’s the face of the shiratorizawa team, but it’s nice seeing a change.” continued the middle blocker on the cusp of rambling, “i really didn’t expect you to focus it on me though, so that was a surprise... which by the way,” he hesitates as if he was do embarrassed to even ask. “why did you choose me?”
you pursed your lips the moment your breath was snatched from your lungs. “um,” you sighed, your mind speedily trying to come up with a plausible answer—something other than perhaps inevitably revealing you feelings for him, “i just think you’re really cool.” was all you could come up with and quite honestly, you wanted to face palm yourself for how stupid it probably sounded.
but to tendou, it was an absolute godsend. his heart thumped rapidly against his rib cage as his cheeks reddened into crimson wine. he didn’t know what else to say afterwards as that was his final push. it was then the idea popped inside his mind. a cheeky smile melted upon his lips as he patted your head gently.
“you’re an amazing artist, (y/n).” he complimented, amused by the fact he was the one who caused your reddening face before turning his heel and waving, “see you tomorrow!”
“u-uh, see you?” you stammered over his sudden departure, briefly waving before hold your hand to your chest. you felt as if your heart was to inevitably combust at the sudden overflow of ardor and vehemence of tendou satori’s actions.
a sigh left your peachy lips, why am i feeling like this?
Tumblr media
tendou could’ve sworn he had enough time to make it back to practice before stirring up any suspicions from his team, but the unfortunate tides have come across and drenched him in ill-fate—all gross and sticky.
ever since seeing your poster of him the day before, the thought of you had been on the middle blocker’s mind enough that even ushijima noticed his change in demeanor.
“what’s up with him?” the captain asked semi as they watched the redhead stumble into the gym.
“i think it’s about (y/l/n),” he answers in a hushed voice in case the disorganized tendou somehow heard. “he’s been in love with her since first year and seeing the poster of him is finally forcing him to make a move.”
ushijima refrained from chuckling, “so all it took was a poster with him as the center instead of me?”
“yeah, pretty much.” says semi.
tendou had been non-stop running back and forth between his classroom, the gym, and the art room after that burst of serendipitous ideas clouded his brain until it was all he could focus on. he had already missed the beginning of practice just so he could do something special for you for when he does muster up the courage to confess.
it was something along the lines of returning the favor of what you did to him, but he was well aware of the fact that he was a volleyball player for a reason and not an artist. honestly, most of the work was done with the help of you friend from the art club to which she basically did the drawing and tendou just colored it in. however he liked to think that it was the thought that counted, either way.
“sorry i’m late,” the missing middle blocker finally appeared. he was trying to catch his breathe as he rested his arms upon his bent knees. perhaps he quite disliked how gigantic the shiratorizawa campus was when it came to this. “i had to take care of something.”
ushijima gave semi an amused look before hardening his gaze on tendou, he tried not to laugh as he cleared his throat to hide that fact. “what’s more important than volleyball practice?” perhaps in the ace’s rarity, he was in the mood to tease the guy. “a girl?”
and immediately, the look on tendou’s face—of complete and utter fear that his captain would potentially punish him with extra conditioning was going to be the death of him—was instead replaced with chuckles him ushijima and semi.
“i’ll leave you off the hook as this was your first time missing a practice, not to mention you missed it for a girl you’ve liked for three years now.” said ushijima surprisingly out of character, than even he found himself shocked by saying it. “but if you miss another practice for (y/l/n), you’ll have extra conditioning everyday before and after school.”
tendou nods rapidly, “yessir!”
the rest of the day was filled with the sound of firm volleyballs being hit and slapped across the gym before falling to the floors with a coupled thud.
and despite trying his very hardest to focus his mind upon the practice game, he couldn’t help but let his thoughts wander to you in your bright enormity. his mind was on you, and yet he was playing the game harder than ever with each and every block he endured. perhaps it was the nerves, the aching adrenaline that flowed through his veins at the mere thought of  confessing to you by the time practice ended fueled his fire.
even if this was just a practice game against his own teammates, he was going to win for you and leave the gym with a confident aura enough to give him the guts to walk up to you.
the thing is, the game had already ended before he knew it. his side of the court had won and reached 25 points before he could even blink with the fact that he was in a ready stance even after the whistle had been blown.
“tendou,” ushijima called out to the redhead. “good luck.”
with that, the middle blocker’s head had cleared as he gave a smile to the setter. he walked over his bag, snatching it up and over his shoulder as he grabbed the rolled up poster within his clammy hands.
god, i’m was nervous. he thought to himself as he walked out of that gym.
the loud, boisterous guffaws from the rest of his teammates faded and echoed into oblivion as he walked the opposite way from everyone else. as the rest were going home, it was him who was on his was to your classroom. he had heard from your friend that you had cleaning duties today after school and it was the perfect time to just swallow his pride and just say.
but his actions were definitely faster than his thoughts as he had impulsively slammed the classroom door open without thinking.
you had thrown a shocked glance at the redhead at the sudden harsh action as he had thrown an embarrassed smile at you. chuckling at that adorable look on his face, you quickly set you mop aside. “tendou? what are you doing here? is your practice over already?”
the redhead nods, “yeah, just a couple minutes ago—um, i-uh just wanted to uh—”
he sighed frustratingly. this was the first time that the tendou satori—the third year infamously known for his innate way of speaking to others in such bright confidence for once, had his tongue tied. the reason why was obvious. it was because of you and your beaming eyes and that godforsaken smile of yours that made him go utterly crazy.
he was still trying to find the right words to say when your gaze fell upon the rolled up poster within his shaking hands. “what’s this?” you asked innocently as your hand reached for the poster and took it out of his hands without much force.
“w-wait! that’s—!”
you unrolled the poster, honey glazed your irises as your mouth gaped slightly.
it was you. a painting of you sitting under one of the large trees on one of the campus’s courtyards, sketching who knows what along with tendou’s large handwriting sprayed at the top:
WILL YOU GO OUT WITH ME, (Y/N)?
you breath was snatched out of your throat as you flickered your widened eyes up to him. red and pink hues adored tendou’s cheeks and ears, scratching the back of his head as his chestnut eyes refused to meet yours. if he were to look at you then and there, he would immediately melt into a puddle of blossoming cherries.
“did you make this for me?” you asked gently, still absolutely moonstruck at the poster. it was a simple painting that was definitely not drawn entirely by tendou as you could tell your friend had something to do with it, but you couldn’t help but be absolutely astonished that he even went out his way for this. “i love it,” you whispered, capturing tendou’s attention.
“y-you do?” the redhead huffs in disbelief.
tendou was closer to you, more than you were comfortable with, but you didn’t fight it off. you didn’t bother giving a little space between you two. “i was serious when i always thought you were cool. you were the only one out of that group of popular kids to talk to me and was actually nice about it.” you suddenly professed. your consciousness mentally slapped you over and over again from the embarrassment of saying such a thing. and yet, the signal in her mind didn’t releasse itself until the moment you felt your eyes fall upon tendou’s chamomile lips. and to your peachy ones, did tendou even dare to think of the impossible, of the serenity that filled them under your blushing cheeks,
“i really like you, (y/n)... and i have for a while now.” he muttered.
you bit your lip at the sudden downpour of feelings that you didn’t even notice yourself clutching and perhaps accidentally crumpling the poster he made. “me too,” you said in a mere whisper, your gaze flickering back down to the floor. “and to answer your question... yes, i will go out with you, tendou.”
the redhead felt his breath hitch in his throat, pausing with his eyes almost wide and doe-like when he looked at you underneath the last rays of the setting sun. he let’s out a bright chuckle, “cool.” he attempted to act casually only to break the moment he found your embrace.
you gently laughed as it muffled within his chest, “cool.” you repeated.
The Ties That Bind 17 of ???
I collapsed languidly into the bath, more thankful than I could say that Elanor had started preparing it when I landed at the Keep. A bath, a change of clothes, and moment to feel like myself was the best welcome home I could have possibly asked for. The only way it might have at all been improved on was if I’d had time to wash my hair. A solid week since we’d left for the Mistari. Maybe more. The days were all starting to blur together, and their accumulated grime clung to me. If only the weight of everything else that had happened in those days could be so easily lifted.
Elanor sat behind me, working scented powders through my hair. The familiarity of the ritual soothed me even more than the heat of the blessedly still warm tub. How many hours had we passed like this, talking and gossiping, her fingers working on my hair or with a needle, her words working on the threads of my thoughts.
“You are a wonder, Elanor. There are no words.”
She laughed and scratched at my scalp, earning her a soft murmur of appreciation.
“I’m still your lady in waiting. And that’s all I’ve doing these past few days. Waiting.”
She said the last with a not so subtle hint in her tone. I joined in her laugh, feeling better about things than I had in days. Talks with Elanor had a way to making everything seem less dire.
“I’m sorry you’ve been kept out of the loop, dear friend. You’re right; there is much to talk about.”
I closed my eyes and drew a deep breath through my nose, trying to gather my thoughts. The soft scents of the water made me sleepy; we’d tried many herbs and flowers of the years in attempts to soothe away my bad dreams. I wondered now if our attempts had only ever succeeded in keeping me asleep, locking me in my nightmares rather than banishing them. I still hadn’t quite come to terms with my apparent sleeping through Zane Cobriana flying madly up to my room those few nights ago.
Nor with my best friend doing said flying.
“I still cant’ believe you snuck Zane up into my room,” I muttered, sinking lower into the bath. “Isn’t that treason or something?”
Elanor’s fingers stilled. I rolled my face up to look at her, shocked to see the dismay on her face.
“Elanor! Elanor, I’m kidding!” I reached to take one of her hands in mine, sloshing water. “Please, it was a joke. I’m not angry. Without you...”
There was no way to know what events might or might not have been set in motion. Perhaps Zane would have been mad enough to scale the Keep walls by hand--or more sensibly, surrender himself like his sister Irene had. I had no doubt Zane would have found a way, so determined he was to end this war. Determined enough to marry himself off to a hawk. My toes curled at the thought. I pushed them aside and focused on my distressed friend.
“We’re all going to have to do drastic things to end this war. Mad things. I’m not angry with you. Just... surprised.”
The look Elanor gave me was so full of grief it took my breath away. It looked so alien on the familiar avian face. It looked too much like Zane, and Adelina, as they’d grieved over the loss of Gregory.
“Dani, you have no idea how scared I was. Zane... he’s very charismatic, as I’m sure you’ve noticed.”
I nodded, my expression caught between a laugh and a wince. Charismatic seemed an understatement.
“It just all seemed so reasonable, with my aunts’ story of his convalescing in their home, and his words about how you’d tried to work things out at the Mistari, and if he could just see you--“
She cut off, shaking her head. “It feels so stupid now, after the fact. You’re right; it was treasonous. It scares me to know that I could do such a thing. To anyone, let alone to you, Dani. I... I just can’t believe.”
I squeezed her hand, wishing I hadn’t started this conversation while I was in the bath. I wanted to put an arm around her, reassure her that she was still one of my dearest friends. Instead I lay there wet and naked and awkward, wondering how to offer comfort. In times of hurt or grief, I would sing. But to the best of my knowledge, there was no lullaby or ballad for revolutionaries.
“Zane spoke to me of Fate,” I said slowly, trying to see the words before they came out of my mouth. I was going on instinct, and as I’d learned recently, that could sometimes just make things worse.
“He told me Fate brought him to your aunts’ house, and I believe he’s right. Maybe what possessed you wasn’t serpent wiles, but the gears of something larger than any of us.”
I gave up on decorum and decided I wanted out of this tub. “Help me dry off, and let me fill you in on all you’ve missed.” Brightening, I remembered a particular bit of gossip that would certainly lift her mood. “And you can give me some advice on how to proceed with Rei--now that we’ve kissed.”
He girlish squeal was exactly the effect I’d hoped for, and my bubbly, dreamy, daring Elanor was back. I told her of Rei backing me before my mother and all but naming himself my alastair, of the rush and confusion of our first kiss, how badly I wished I hadn’t made such a decision now, with the serpiente en route for peace talks.
“I’m sure that’s what urged his hand,” Elanor said as she did up the laces at my back. Nearly all of my formal gowns had laces for the demi-wings of my third form. “What with Zane galloping in on a big black horse and asking for your hand.”
“He didn’t ask for my hand,” I shot back, already tired of quelling that rumor before it had even properly circulated. “The Mistari suggested it as an option. Zane and I haven’t had a chance to discuss anything else.”
Elanor snorted but I didn’t let her voice whatever goading point she was about to make.
“Did you know he gave that horse to your aunts? His and Adelina’s. ‘For all the trouble’, apparently.”
Elanor gasped. “That’s-- those horses must be worth a fortune! Gods, and probably cost a fortune to upkeep. Do you think he’ll be offended if they sell them?”
I shrugged. “I have no idea?” Slyly, I added, “Why don’t you ask him when he gets here?”
We lost ourselves in giddy laughter, needing the release. It was so good to laugh with Elanor while she dressed me for the assembly. Almost good enough to distract me from my nerves.
Of course, my mother coming in to strategize about said assembly pretty undid it all that in a matter of seconds. - Sitting in my ante room, ignoring the tea that Elanor poured before quietly retreating, my mother and I were getting no where.
“You can’t be mad about this, mother. You’re the one who pulled us from the neutral lands we’d already agreed to meet on. What other options were exactly left for us? You made it clear you wouldn’t tolerate us camping in the woods.”
“Danica-- you know why-- that isn’t the point. The point is what exactly do you plan to do with him now. Here. In the heart of your kingdom?”
I resisted the urge to rub at my temples. Instead, I allowed myself a different breech of decorum: honestly speaking my mind.
“I wish all this had happened after I’d taken the throne.”
My mother sighed and nodded. “Agreed. Things would be so much simpler if Rei was already your alastair. Then maybe the Disa might have suggested something useful--or at least something less offensive.” It was my turn to sigh.
“Mother, Zane is a perfectly fine gentlemen--“
“He’s a serpent--“
“Who has not once raised a hand against me. Do you understand that, mother? The sheer number of times he could have ended my life by now--“
“That is hardly reassuring, Shardae.”
I grit my teeth. What I wanted to do was scream. What I did was take another careful breath.
“I need you to back me on this, mother. We need to present a united front, one that is in control and unafraid. If we’re seen to flinch around the serpiente, this will never work. The citizenry will panic and the Keep will be bathed in blood in a matter of moments.”
It was one of our most sacred tennets that blood never be spilled within the Keep. Even meat was prepared off the grounds and brought in, to keep the heart of our kingdom free of death. It was at the foundation of our wards, and utterly unthinkable that anyone would dare break the taboo within its walls.
Just as unthinkable as a cobra marrying a hawk.
My mother straightened, and I could almost see her pulling her reserve back into place around herself.
“Of course. We will do whatever it takes to keep our halls secure.”
Hardly a reassuring phrasing, but it would have to do.
“So. What are your plans for introducing this visiting dignitary to your court?”
Note
I want you to answer A-Z on the fandom asks so I can peer into your psyche 👀
Wow I love you. This actually took around three hours since I wanted to think about the answers. See them under the cut!
A - Ships that you currently like a lot. (They don’t have to be OTPs because not everyone has OTPs.) Friendships, pairings, threesomes, etc. are allowed.
From Hanyou no Yashahime — Sesshomaru and Rin
From The Mandalorian — The Mandomera’s been creeping up a little bit.
B - A pairing–platonic, romantic or sexual–that you initially didn’t consider, but someone changed your mind.
Honestly can’t think of one. I’m very set in my ships.
C - A ship you have never liked and probably never will.
From Naruto — SasuSaku. Sasuke was cute as a kid so I get Sakura having a crush on him then, but I think she would have gotten over it when he became a homicidal clown who abandoned the village and tried to kill her and her teammates multiple times.
D - A pairing you wish you liked but just can’t.
From Harry Potter — Ron x Hermione. I’ve always thought their personalities didn’t match and not in the good “opposites attract” kind of way.
E - Have you added anything cracky/hilarious to your fandom? If so, what?
I only know how to write angst, drama, and introspective musings so no.
F - What’s the longest you’ve ever been in a fandom?
Over fifteen years in the Harry Potter fandom, but I’ve had to separate that from JKR herself in the recent years.
G - Have you ever had an OTP? If so, do you remember your first one? Who was in it?
“Have I ever had an OTP”? *laughs from shipping hell*
From The Witch of Blackbird Pond by Elizabeth George Speare — Nat and Kit were my first OTP. Read this book in fifth grade and was immediately loved them. Boy literally risks banishment from the colony to help prove she’s not a witch.
H - What is your favorite source text for fandom stuff (e.g., TV shows, movies, books, anime, Western animation, etc.)?
I love visual media, so TV, anime, and film
I - Has Tumblr caused you to stop liking any fandoms, if so, which and why?
I’m not going to let tumblr dot com put me off of a particular show/book/etc. itself, but it has definitely made me think less of certain types of fans who are in a fandom.
J - Name a fandom you didn’t think about until you saw it all over Tumblr. (You don’t have to care about it or follow it; it just has to be something that Tumblr made you aware of.)
The...period drama fandom? More widely, the history fandom. They both create some of the most beautiful edits celebrating history and I love it.
K - What character has your favorite development arc/the best development arc?
 From Avatar: The Last Airbender — It’s gotta be Prince Zuko
L - Say something genuinely nice about a character who isn’t one of your faves. (Characters you’re neutral about are fair game, as are characters you merely dislike. Characters that you absolutely loathe with the fire of ten thousand suns are exempt, as there is no point in giving yourself an aneurysm over a character that you hate.)
From Harry Potter — I think Ginny is a Mary Sue but I loved when she stood up for herself in Half-Blood Prince when Ron was trying to slut-shame her.
M - Name a character that you’d like to have for a friend.
From Parks and Recreation — Leslie Knope. Unending positive affirmations, thoughtfulness, and support!
N - Name three things you wish you saw more or in your main fandom (or a fandom of choice).
I don’t really have a main fandom but I haven’t mentioned Free! yet so let’s go with it for this one.
1. Less Nitori because I can’t stand him.
2. More female characters! I get half the appeal is the boys, but I’d love to see a girls swim team in some capacity.
3. More Haru and his family dynamics! Doesn’t have to be a ton, but I want to know what his relationship with his parents like, especially as an adult.
O - Choose a song at random. Which ship or character does it remind you of?
Salt and the Sea - The Lumineers. “From the destruction, out of the flame. You need a villain, give me a name.” Such an Odesta song. (Finnick x Annie from the Hunger Games)
P - Invent a random AU for any fandom (we always need more ideas).
For The Mandalorian — A historical AU set in early 1900s New York City where Mando’s just some government agent sent to “report” on slum conditions to satisfy some housing law. He goes meaning to write up a generic report but then finds the orphaned Baby Yoda abandoned in one of the tenements. Shocked by the conditions of the slums, Mando goes from being an apathetic, middling-level bureaucrat to being an anonymous investigative journalist reporting on the corruption in the government that allows for the city’s most vulnerable citizens to live in squalor, leading the government on a search to find who within their ranks is exposing them.
Q - A fandom you’ve abandoned and why.
Sherlock, because it just took so long for the third series to come out. I had moved on to other fandoms by the time it did. Still have fond memories of when I was active in it, though.
R - Which friendship/platonic relationship is your favorite in fandom?
From Lord of the Rings — Aragorn and Legolas. This is played up a lot more in the films but I love it.
S - Show us an example of your personal headcanon (prompts optional but encouraged)
For Lord of the Rings — Boromir definitely taught Faramir swordplay when they were little kids since their father didn’t want to.
T - Do you have any hard and fast headcanons that you will die defending?
From Hanyou no Yashahime — Rin made the first move. Sesshomaru would be way too clueless to even know how to go about it.
U - Three favorite characters from three different fandoms, and why they’re your favorites.
From Pirates of the Caribbean — James Norrington: Commodore in the Royal Navy during the 18th century, must I explain any further? Cool, calm, and collected on the job while looking v good while he does it but a nervous wreck in front of the woman he fancies. Tell me that’s not straight out of Austen.
From Star Wars (OT) — Luke Skywalker: An unapologetically good person in a crapsack world, doing his best to bring light into the world. A classic hero archetype who grows out of his naïveté to become a cunning—but still benevolent—Jedi.
From Prince of Tennis — Yukimura Seiichi: His duality is *chef’s kiss*. Super scary and in charge on the court, gentle sweet boy who loves art and culture off the court. He struggled for so long but was able to overcome it all through his hard work and willpower.
Bonus favorite, because I couldn’t resist...
From Band of Brothers — Doc Roe: He’s doing the MOST for his guys but he really just needs a hug. Plus he’s got the accent.
V - Which character do you relate to most?
From Little Women — Jo March, especially as portrayed by Saoirse Ronan in the 2019 adaptation. Writer, holds grudges, opinionated, stubborn, eschewed “girliness” in her youth but is more open to it and romanticism as an adult.
W - A trope which you are virtually certain to hate in any fandom.
I’ve gotten to the point where even the hint of a love triangle tests my patience.
X - A trope which you are almost certain to love in any fandom.
It’s about the yearning: Longing Look
Also will definitely always ship the Brooding Boy and the Gentle Girl
Y - What are your secondhand fandoms (i.e., fandoms you aren’t in personally but are tangentially familiar with because your friends/people on your dash are in them)?
Anything in the MCU or general superhero content.
Z - Just ramble about something fan-related, go go go! (Prompts optional but encouraged.)
I love fandom so much. I’m sort of facetious about being obsessed with people who aren’t real on my other social media accounts, but in all seriousness, being able to escape the real world to get excited over characters and relationships that face their own struggles, triumphs, and emotions is such a gift. So often they speak so powerfully on the human experience—How can you read, or watch, any of Tolkien’s work and not be moved by what he has to say about humanity and the power of good? Even if the stories are fictional, the messages they impart about life aren’t, which is what I love so much about them.
The Reveal
Happy Friday :) It’s time for the penultimate chapter! Enjoy and thanks for reading!
Kat groaned loudly into her dark bedroom. Coco was supposed to be on a run with the club, and yet, someone was banging on her front door at 2am.
She grabbed her pistol off the side table, leaving off the lights as she walked down the hallway. Katarina carefully stood on her toes, looking out the peephole. His face was almost completely hidden behind his hood, but Kat would recognize Happy just by his silhouette.
“What the fuck are you doing here?” she grumbled, pulling the door open. Happy pushed his way past her, not waiting for an invitation this time.
He closed the door behind him, making sure to lock the deadbolt. He walked to the window next, looking out between the curtains before making sure to close them tightly.
Katarina was instantly on edge. Happy’s behaviour definitely gave her the impression that something was wrong. It felt like there was a hidden threat looming just outside her view.
“Happy, what’s wrong?” she asked, moving towards the lamp. He caught her hand, dragging her back to her room. Happy closed the door behind them, finally letting Kat turn on a light. She gasped when she saw his bruised face as he pushed the hood back. “What happened?”
Happy stayed silent, pushing her hands away when she reached for his face. Katarina squared her shoulders.
“I’m not doing this. Either you tell me what’s wrong or you get out,” she told him, her voice firm. She had let him block her out plenty of times, but she wasn’t going to let it continue. “Now,” she added, staring him down. He took a deep breath, sitting down on the edge of her bed.
“The dumbasses that broke into my house are making a lot of noise,” he admitted slowly, grinding out the words.
“Noise? I thought all they wanted was who ordered the hit,” Katarina thought out loud, knowing she should have expected it to be far from simple. She grabbed a washcloth, wetting it with cold water. Happy hissed as she pressed it against a split just under his eye.
“Prospect is somehow poking into things from the cartel side.” She looked at him for a moment, realising exactly how EZ was managing that.
“Shit,” she swore, closing her eyes. “He’s looking for paperwork, and he knows exactly who to ask.” Kat shook her head briefly, focusing on cleaning Happy’s face up. She scrubbed away the dried blood. “That’s going to need a couple of those butterfly bandaids,” she murmured, patting at the cut on his cheek.
“I’m gonna kill him, Kat.” Her hand froze on the first aid kit. Katarina was glad he had waited until she was just out of sight before saying that. She didn’t want him to see her flinch.
“I’ll handle EZ,” she replied, walking back to him. She pulled out three little bandaid strips, glad she still had some of these supplies. Happy reached up, stopping her hand.
“His brother told Bishop it came from you. He was protecting me,” Happy said softly, catching Kat’s gaze. “I made you a promise that no one would ever hurt you again.”
“Let me reach out. If it doesn’t make a difference,” she paused, raising her shoulders. “Then you do what you think is best.”
“No, I handle it now,” he disagreed, starting to stand up. He didn’t have time to let her fix him up. This needed to be finished now. Kat put her hand firmly in the middle of his chest, pushing him back down.
“You don’t call the shots anymore. You’re going to let me try, Hap, or so help me,” she snapped, shaking her head. Happy started to speak again, but Katarina talked over him. “I’m not going to argue with you.” He closed his mouth, the frustration clear in his eyes. “Now, let me finish this,” she instructed, standing between his knees so she could easily reach. Happy rested his hands on the outside of her thighs.
Kat finished placing the third suture strip, leaning in to make sure everything was in place. Happy tilted his chin up, his nose brushing hers as she inspected the other large cut below his eye.
“I couldn’t live with myself if something happened to you,” he murmured, bringing his hand up to cup her cheek.
“Back at you, killer,” Kat whispered, letting him pull her in a little closer. She caught herself at the last moment, stepping back. “I can’t,” she said with a small smile.
“He ever treats you as badly as I did, there’s a special spot just for El Coco.” He lifted the hem of his shirt, pointing to an open space on his stomach.
“If he breaks my heart like that, you’ll have to beat me to it,” Katarina replied, looking down at her feet. The atmosphere around them felt heavy now. “You’re welcome to sleep here. EZ knows where I live, but I doubt he would tell anyone.” He shook his head.
“I parked near the building.”
“Honestly, I don’t give a shit who might see your bike out there. I just want to get some sleep, and it will go better if I know you’re safe at least for tonight,” she said, grabbing a blanket and pillow from the hall closet. Happy got up, walking towards the living room.
-
Kat’s head snapped up as she heard a group of bikes approaching. She had taken the afternoon off from work and was sitting at the picnic table just outside the Mayan’s clubhouse, scribbling more notes on a work order.
Bishop rode in first, closely followed by a few other members. She stood up and shielded her eyes from the sun, watching as Coco parked his bike. He nodded at something Bish said, hanging his helmet on the handlebars of his motorcycle.
Another bike rode in, parking outside of EZ’s trailer at the back of the scrapyard. She recognized Happy’s Harley, making certain she didn’t stare for too long. It had been two weeks since he’d shown up at her apartment.
“Hey, dulce. You miss me?” Coco asked, a grin on his mouth as he approached her.
“Oh, yea,” she assured, nodding. Kat tossed her arms around his neck, feeling Coco’s arms slide around her waist under her leather jacket. He pulled her flush against him, kissing her in a way that made her ears go red.
“Think you got time for me to come over tonight?” he asked, still dotting kisses against her lips. Katarina grinned.
“As soon as you’re done here, I’m all yours, Cocopuff.” Coco groaned but didn’t argue.
“Coco, templo in ten minutes. Don’t show up with a fuckin’ hard on,” Angel snapped, walking past them. Coco leaned his forehead against hers, groaning.
“You guys still on the outs?” she asked, stepping back enough to look at him. He tilted his head, shrugging.
“Somethin’s still up his ass, but I got no idea what it’s about.” Coco caught sight of Happy walking out of EZ’s trailer, closely followed by the prospect. “Y’know why he’s here?” Katarina struggled to keep her expression neutral.
“No?” she replied, shaking her head. There was no reason for Coco to assume she would know anything. Something was definitely on his mind. “Is there something I should know about?” Coco lit a cigarette, the corners of his mouth tipped down.
“I got questions later. You wanna wait here?” Kat nodded, feeling entirely uneasy.
Less than five minutes later, the Mayans came pouring out of the clubhouse. Happy and EZ approached the group, sensing something was wrong. Bishop stared at Katarina, giving her the definite impression of not being welcome.
She took the hint, squeezing Coco’s hand as she walked past him. He’d let her know what was going on when he could, for now, she knew leaving was the smartest option. Happy’s bike was blocking her car, his way of manufacturing a moment with her.
“Padrino’s in trouble,” Bishop explained, clearly thinking she was out of earshot. Kat made sure to keep her face neutral, knowing she wasn’t supposed to hear that. She slid into the driver’s seat, watching the guys rush to their motorcycles in her rearview mirror.
“Sorry for blocking you,” Happy said loudly, waiting until Kat had leaned out of her seat to look back at him. He held out a hand, pretending to point at her rear tire. “Looks low.” She heaved a sigh, wondering what he was up to.
Katarina walked to the back of the car, squatting down next to him. The first few bikes started up, giving them a little sound cover.
“Whatever this is, it’s gonna get messy,” he said quietly, his gaze focused on the imaginary spot on her car. Kat’s heart seized. For Happy to say messy, it was likely they wouldn’t all be coming back. “I love you.” Happy stood up abruptly, brushing off the knees of his pants.
“Hap,” she started, wanting to say more. He didn’t look back at her, tossing a leg over his bike and firing it up. Coco rode up beside him, glancing between Happy and Katarina.
“Come back in one piece,” she said, raising her voice to be heard over the bikes. She blew a kiss at Coco, forcing herself to act natural. He gave her a low wave before following the rest of the bikes out, Happy just behind him.
-
Kat grabbed for her phone, relieved to see it was a text from Coco. They had been gone nearly eight hours, and her nerves were past frayed.
*Get to the clubhouse. Lockdown*
“Shit,” she muttered, grabbing her backpack and tossing a change of clothes into it. Kat jogged down the stairs, not stopping to talk to her neighbor on the stairs. A lockdown was serious.
Coco was sitting outside the clubhouse, stubbing out his cigarette as she walked over. There was blood on his sleeve and dirt smears on his face and neck.
“Sit down,” he said, gesturing to the spot on the table next to him. His tone was serious. “I didn’t wanna do this shit here, but…” he paused, taking a deep breath and looking away from her.
Katarina perched on the edge of the picnic table next to him, reaching for his hand. Coco resisted, pulling out another cigarette and lighting it.
“Padrino’s busted up real bad. Nestor took a bullet in the arm. One of Galindo’s other guys took two shots in the vest.” Kat lowered her head, catching his eye. Coco took a long drag, his next words slower, like he didn’t want to say them. “Happy ain’t come back with us.”
Kat felt her heart stop.
“I didn’t want you to hear it in there,” he continued, finally putting his hand on her knee. “You ok?” Kat blinked a few times, nodding at him. “Chucky saw his bike at your apartment.”
“Ah, questions for later,” Kat realised, sighing. “You sent Chucky to check in on me?” she asked, trying to grin at him.
“Is he your ex?” Coco asked. Katarina shook her head slightly. She assumed he already knew, but this was the first time he’d asked directly.
“I will tell you anything you want to know, just… I can’t think about it right now,” she said quietly, her expression blank as she boxed away her emotions. If she thought about it too much, she would breakdown in front of his brothers.
“S’why I caught you out here,” he admitted, moving his arm to put it around her shoulders. Kat swallowed and nodded. “We’ll figure it out, yea? This, the club business, the cartel bullshit.” Katarina leaned into him, resting her head on his shoulder. Coco was her safe place now.
   After last night, you began to think that maybe Narcissa should’ve reevaluated her options. She could’ve done any number of things before getting you involved. If she would’ve asked Pansy (and Pansy would’ve easily complied) this probably would’ve in a completely different direction. But she chose you.
   She said it was because your connection with Draco was different than his connection with any other person and for awhile you believed her. You saw the way he looked at you and you knew that there was something special there. But now, you weren’t quite sure.
   When you woke up that morning, you had dozens of missed calls from Draco and even more texts. You didn’t even bother to look at them, choosing instead to completely ignore your phone for the entire morning. As you went on with your day, your phone buzzed a few more times and you only hesitated briefly before continuing to ignore it. You didn’t want to speak to Draco right now and you were determined not to waver.
   You wondered just how long you could get away with it. Eventually, he would find some way to get in touch with you and even if you did manage to evade him, Narcissa wouldn’t let this go on for very long. It was only a matter of time.
    There was a knock on your door and you realized that you’d already run out of time.
   For a moment, you considered ignoring it. But then another knock came and you knew that wasn’t an option. If it were Narcissa, she might give you one more knock before simply apparating in there and if it were Draco, he might be desperate enough to stay out there all day. Persistence ran in the family.
   With a third knock, you crossed the apartment and threw open the door. Draco was standing on the other side with a bouquet of roses in one hand, a bottle of wine in the other, and an apologetic smile. You crossed your arms, trying to keep your face entirely neutral.
   “I gave you my address to write, not to visit.” You turned away from him and walked back into the apartment, sitting down on a couch across from the door. He stepped into your apartment, shuttin the door behind him. He stared around the room, taking everything in. You realized that this was the first time he’d ever been in your apartment and instantly, you began to feel slightly self-conscious.
   “Well,” he said absentmindedly, still surveying the room. “I figured, if you weren’t returning my texts or calls, you wouldn’t return a letter.” Finally, his eyes snapped back to you.
   “I wasn’t returning your texts or calls because I didn’t want to talk to you.” His eyes softened slightly and for a moment, he looked almost like a hurt puppy. He stuck his bottom lip out slightly without even thinking about it, which only added to the effect. It took everything in you not to retract that statement.
   “So, you’re mad.” It wasn’t a question because he already knew you were
   “Oh really? How could you tell?” He let out a breath, shaking his head slightly.
   “I didn’t think flowers would be enough, which is why I brought the wine. I thought maybe we could talk about it over a glass of wine. Do you have any glasses?” He looked at you expectantly.
   “I think it would be best to have this conversation when you’re sober. I don’t usually like the things you say when you’re drunk or hungover.” He nodded quickly, sitting the wine and flowers down on the coffee table.
   “Right. Well, make sure to drink it eventually, it’s one of my favorites, I think you’ll like it.” He stood there awkwardly, staring at you. You stared back with an unchanging expression. “So uh...what happened last night?”
   “You were there, shouldn’t you know what happened?” His brows furrowed slightly in frustration.
   “I thought we were having a good time and then all of a sudden you started freaking out.” You shot him a look and instantly he backtracked. “I don’t mean it like that, you weren’t freaking out. I just mean all of a sudden you were upset,” he said carefully, ”and I don’t understand why.”
   You turned away from him, shaking your head. He would never get it. He didn’t care enough to even try. This was all in vain.
   “(Y/N),” he groaned. He walked around the coffee table and knelt in front of you. He plaaced a hand on your knee and said, ”I know I’m not good at this but I really am trying here. But you have to talk to me, love.” You hated the way you loved hearing him call you that.
   You looked down at him. He had this serious look in his eyes, almost like he actually meant what he said. You tried not to let the hardness in your eyes fade.
   “Did you go home with Pansy last night?”
   His face instantly contorted in confusion. “I-what? No. I left right after you left. I couldn’t have fun knowing you were upset. You would’ve known that if you had answered any of my calls. Why would I go home with Pansy?”
   “She said some things last night that insinuated...that there may have been something going on between you two and maybe it isn’t over yet.” You crossed your arms and tried to sink further into the couch.
   Draco took a deep breath, leaning away slightly. “I...I’m so sorry. I mean there was something between us, if you can call it that. It was really just sex but I cut it off the last time I left the country, that was over five or maybe even six months ago.” He reached for your hand and was glad that you let him take it. “I would never do that to you.”
   “How do I know that? We haven’t even talked about what we’re doing, what even am I to you?” Draco looked down at your hand, twisting his fingers between yours.
   “You’re so much to me. Much more than Pansy ever was. Pansy, she was just...fun. The best I could get when I was lonely but now you’re here and that’s all I need.” He continued to avoid eye contact. “And I would never do something like that if I ever thought I would have even the slightest chance with you. I don’t want to hurt you. I should have just left with you last night and I’m sorry I didn’t, if I knew what she was saying I would’ve. Actually, I would’ve told Pansy off then we could’ve left.”
   He finally looked up at you, only to be met with a smile. “I’ve missed that smile.” He leaned forward and you did the same. When you met in the middle, his lips connected with yours. You reached upward and wrapped you fingers in the hair at the base of his neck. You pulled away and he leaned closer to you trying to chase the kiss.
   “Pansy is an arse,” you mumbled, bringing your hand up slightly higher on the back of his head.
   “I know love. You’ll never have to deal with that again. I prefer spending time with you alone anyways. I really just want to go away with you, far away from everyone else. Just you and me.” You laughed slightly.
    “We can’t just run away from the world.” He looked up at you with a serious look in your eyes.
    “And why not?”
    “Unlike you, I have responsibilities.” He frowned.
   “Hmm, well, if you could go anywhere in the world where would it be?”
    “Draco...” You weren’t gonna let him drag you into this.
    “Come on.” You rolled your eyes, trying to ignore him. But he pulled on your hand, bringing you closer. “Where?”
   Finally, you sighed, giving in. “Fine, I don’t know, how about...Paris.” Draco quirked an eyebrow at you.
    “Paris.” He sounded slightly unimpressed and you felt foolish for saying it.
    “What? You asked?”
    He shrugged. “Yeah but I don’t know. That’s a bit cliche isn’t it. Paris. I’ve been thousands of times. We used to vacation there when I was younger and I guess I just don’t see the appeal. It’s just Paris.”
    “Well, I’ve never and it always looks beautiful. But like I said, I’m too busy to run away with you.”
    “We’ll see.” Draco got to his feet and pulled you up with him. “I should go but we’ll talk later. I assume you’ll be answering my calls now.” You rolled your eyes again. He wrapped his arms around you tightly in a hug and when he pulled away he tried to suppress his smile but you just barely caught it. You knew he didn’t want you to see him smile like that because it almost immediately disappeared into a casual smirk. But for just a moment he looked happier than you’d ever seen him.
    “Oh yeah, my mom’s holding this thing in next week. It’s one of her dinner things. I thought maybe you’d want to come with me.” You could feel anxiety creeping in at the mere thought of it. Having to go back to one of those damn parties just might be the death of you and if you went with Draco...who knew what people would say.
    “You want me to go as your date?”
    “Yeah, why not.” He seriously saw no problem with the prospect of this.
    “Draco, I just don’t think I’m the type of girl people want to see you with.” His face immediately looked confused. “It’s gonna be a room full of your family and friends and I just-”
    “Those people incessantly gossip about me and my habits. If anything, I think having you around would give them less to gossip about, they might be quite mad about that now that I think of it, having nothing to whisper about while they have lunch but then again who cares. We’re going show up, looking great and give them a show of how happy you make me. We can watch them try not to stare, it’ll be great.” Your bottom lip stuck out the slightest bit. Draco gave your hand a squeeze. “If you get uncomfortable, we’ll leave.” He leaned down to kiss you and you couldn’t help but to smile into him. If he were there maybe you could do it. Maybe.
    You leaned away slightly, pressing your forehead against his. “Okay, I’ll go.” You had to try.
