Random thought that S1 could have instead had more consistent hinting/detail to it that Tommy *suspected* Grace in some way, and therefore his seduction of her wasn't entirely just the hearteyes it tried to be sold as, but rather attempting to sway her to his side. Because, given every other series has Tommy using his body/self/sex as a way to leverage influence he wouldn't otherwise have, it'd be consistent to have seen a hint of that with Grace.

And then to *still* have their revelation moment after the Garrison killings, because then how much more meaningful if he throws away his suspicions in favour of finding someone he feels sees him and gets him.

2.14 Born Under a Bad Sign

-Meg possesses Sam which forces the brothers’ dynamic to develop. Dean really reclaims a sense of himself this episode after spending all season in various degrees and types of turmoil over what to do about Sam. I don’t think he ever really considered killing Sam, but he agonized over his role and what he should do. He lied to a drunk Sam in Playthings and said he would kill him.

- Dean has called Ellen multiple times about Sam going missing, so much so that Dean doesn’t even refer to him by name on the phone, he just calls asking Where is he. Dean says “I’m losing my mind here.” He’s desperate to find Sam. I wonder if Dean ever lost Sam when he was a baby, like at the store or something.

- Dean also says it’s like when John went missing all over again. Dean sought out Sam for help and comfort when that happened. It’s a little kernel of insight into Dean’s state of mind when he broke into Sam’s house in s1, he was probably a lot more afraid than he let on to Sam because he was trying to keep it together.

-when he gets to the motel room Dean kneels in front of Sam, who’s sitting on the bed. He’s off to the side rather than right in between Sam’s legs but when he zeroes in on the blood on Sam’s shirt, on his lower stomach, he starts moving aside Sam’s jacket and touching the bloody fabric. It looks very intimate. Dean reaches directly into Sam’s personal space and even moves his clothes aside to check for injury.

This quick shot of his fingers feeling Sam’s stomach is particularly intimate. Meg!Sam says that he doesn’t think it’s his blood. Dean certainly thought it was Sam’s blood, he wouldn’t have been considering other options at that moment. So Dean is touching Sam’s wound on his lower belly, as far as he and the viewer know. It’s a sexual and feminine image. Although he’s not actually injured, Sam’s body has been invaded and controlled by a demon. It’s a sexual assault parallel, a first taste of Sam’s fall from grace. Throughout the episode, Dean fights for him and refuses to harm him. As long as Sam is still in there somewhere, Dean will protect him.

-Meg is inside of Sam’s brain and body and she has a pretty good understanding of Sam. She’s acting the way she thinks he would and also in whatever way plays to her advantage with Dean, so she has a primary interest in the nature of their relationship. She knows about Dean’s promise to John and to Sam about killing him, so she must have some access to his memories. She plays up Sam’s pleading eyes more than anything, which means she knows Sam’s memories that this has worked on Dean in the past.

- Dean reacts with deep skepticism to the gas station clerk telling him that Sam was drinking, smoking, and behaving violently.

Dean has also picked up on a couple of other specifics that aren’t like Sam: the name he gave at the motel is the name of a Bon Jovi band member, which Dean doesn’t think Sam likes and isn’t one of the names they would recognize for each other; and if Sam did smoke, Dean seems convinced he wouldn’t smoke menthols. He knows Sam so well.

- Dean says that smoking and throwing bottles at people sounds “more like me than you” which tells us that Dean is sometimes an angry drunk and sometimes a smoker, both of which make perfect sense for his character. There’s a lot we don’t directly see on the show.

-Sam moves differently, seems more feminine, and when Dean continues to insist he might not be a murderer he looks annoyed and almost rolls his eyes. Jared Padalecki is so good at being Sam possessed by Meg.

-Meg is basically begging Dean to feel horror that Sam killed someone- a hunter! with a family! caught on camera!- but Dean is like Ah fuck okay I’ll just run through the crime scene cleanup checklist quick and then we can take a nap together at home before we go okay babe? Babe u okay?

- Meg!Sam asks Dean to kill him, kinda using the puppy dog eyes but not quite selling it because it’s not needy enough, and Dean says “I’ve tried so hard to keep you safe…I can’t. I’d rather die.”

This is Dean admitting outright that his promise was bullshit and that he will either save Sam or die trying, and he’s faced so many trials to be completely sure and ready to say it. It doesn’t matter what Sam does. Dean had to understand more consciously his feelings for Sam before he could commit to this because it’s a fundamental part of who he is and his love for Sam. He feels guilty about his love, but he can’t doubt the strength of it and I think this is where he first accepts his role as Sam’s savior. The way he looks at Sam here is with such open love and desire. He’s like Wesley looking at Buttercup.

-Dean calls the phone company to get Sam’s location by pretending Sam is his son. He says “my son” and calls him Sammy and fuck if it isn’t the cutest. Dean is Sam’s dad now. Succession.

-Meg!Sam is so irritated that Jo is carrying a torch for Dean. She seems to be using Sam’s real memories and feelings to get what she wants, and in this case I think Sam is probably annoyed by Jo’s crush and wishes she understood she doesn’t have a chance with Dean, so Meg is using her weaknesses. She really enjoys using Sam’s characteristics and twisting them. For example, after tying Jo up she uses the puppy dog face again and says “c’mon it’s me, you can tell me anything” which echos Sam’s role as sympathetic ear to the victims and other characters. So when she talks about Jo wanting Dean and Dean not wanting Jo and then attacks her in a very sexually charged way, it feels like she’s playing with both their desire for Dean and Sam’s desire to be more like him. She seems to be telling the truth in these scenes, just truths that Jo wouldn’t want to know. So telling her You want him but he doesn’t want you and aren’t I the next best, when Sam in reality does not want Jo, makes Jo into a proxy to act out unrequited love for (and from) Dean.

-Meg!Sam shoots Dean and he falls into the water from the dock and Jo finds him soaked and bleeding and you have three guesses as to the first words out of his mouth (“where’s Sam?”).

-Bobby asks where Dean is so Meg!Sam tells him Dean’s with a girl somewhere. Bobby asks if she’s pretty and Meg’s eyes go black and she says “if you ask me he’s in way over his head.” The visual cue and emphasis make it clear Meg is talking as herself here, not as Sam, and it seems like she’s talking about Dean’s situation with Sam. It’s also a pun because she thinks he’s underwater, but regardless she’s connecting Dean being with some girl and Dean being in trouble because of Sam.

-she also smirks at Dean pretty wickedly and tells him “you wouldn’t wanna bruise this fine packaging” ie Sam’s body that she knows Dean thinks is mighty fine. What I wouldn’t give for her to taunt him more in this way.

- she tells Dean he’s worthless, he can’t save Sam, and the people he loves would be better off without him. Which means his worst beliefs about himself (as far as Sam knows) are that he isn’t good enough and that he’s actually bad for Sam. Why? Why would Sam know that Dean fears he would be better off without him? He’s protected and cared for Sam his whole life, both Sam and John have explicitly told him that they’re grateful, and even Dean can’t blame himself for the way he and Sam grew up. It’s possible this is about the fact that Sam is in danger hunting with Dean, but he would’ve been in danger in law school too. It fits better with Dean’s guilt over his feelings for Sam and his knowledge that Sam is in love with him. Sam knows that Dean blames himself.

-Dean refuses to hurt Sam when Meg!Sam is punching him, and she punches him four or five times. Then when Sam is back unpossessed, Dean punches him in the face. When it was about saving Sam Dean refused to hurt him, but now that Sam is safe it’s like his anger at Sam comes pouring out. He needed some form of resolution for the fact that his little brother scared the shit out of him for a week straight going missing, murdered someone and didn’t even help clean up the crime scene, pistol whipped him, shot him in the shoulder, punched him, named his worst fears, threatened to bite his own tongue off, and pressed his finger into his wound and laughed. Obviously Sam did none of those things and it was all Meg, but I think it’s completely understandable that Dean reacted this way after not only keeping his shit together for Sam all that time but also actively protecting him. It’s a reasonable trauma response for him to have fought back. I’m not saying it’s ethical or anything just that it’s exactly what Dean would do and it gives his episode arc some catharsis.

-for his part, Sam isn’t upset with Dean for punching him. He never is. As evidenced by Sam’s little smirk when Dean makes joke about Bobby’s charms for keeping the demon from “getting back up in there.”

-Dean checks in with Sam in the sweetest way, gently prompting him to answer if he’s okay. Sam explains that what’s troubling him isn’t the memory of his own hands killing a man, it’s the knowledge that even then Dean wouldn’t kill him. They both know for sure now.

-Dean teases Sam about having a girl inside him and Sam grins. It’s just one of many references to Sam having someone inside him and otherwise sexually being referred to as the girl.

-Dean’s “if it’s the last thing I do I’m gonna save you” hits different when you’re on tumblr and you know the show ends 13 seasons later with Dean dying and Sam living out some kind of a life.

Once Upon A Time Rewatch: 6x09 Changelings

Okay, another episode I have hardly any memory of. Oh! Is it a Rumbelle flashback? I feel like Gideon is in this one. It’s so weird not having memorised or deeply analysed s6. I’ve rewatched and analysed other seasons so many times but I’ve probably seen this season twice at most. I hate not remembering things. I must know everything!!

Are the fairies still nuns, as Whale asked in s2? You would have thought Christianity and magic wouldn’t mix but maybe they found a way.

Okay! I’m getting a strong sense my girl Belle is about to do something batsh*t! I love it when she does things completely bananas! 

Belle: “He’s trying to scare me so I’ll go back to him.” Yep. Generally, not a good technique for getting someone back.

Okay, but how on earth does Belle know the baby is a boy???

There’s a manual on defeating the Dark One? Gideon must have somehow placed that there. 

Ugggh. Finding it really difficult to concentrate here because here I am watching a show about magic, which is completely fiction while my mum is on the phone with my Nanna talking about fantastical witchcraft and how everyone is casting curses on them as though its real. I am going to scream. 

It’s giddy up Gideon!

It must be weird seeing your child all grown up before it’s born. 

I forget, is this a genuine vision of Gideon who’s trying to help or are the Black Fairy or Gideon manipulating Belle?

Why doesn’t Zelena even fight Split Queen?! Maybe she thinks she’ll just absorb her magic like Hyde did, which I’m not entirely sure if she possesses that power. But Zelena could have taken her! I don’t know why they didn’t show Zelena’s true magic potential this season.

Oh! He knew she was going to translate it so used that to his advantage by tricking her into it! Clever!

Zelena: “you’ve been forgiven. You’ve grown. You’ve changed.” Regina: “You’re not me.” No, you’re much worse, Regina! I can’t with this hypocrisy, again. You’ve slaughtered villages upon villages with children. What makes you so special that you’re worthy of forgiveness but someone who hasn’t even committed half the murders you have isn’t?? And worthy of your forgiveness no less?! You’d think Regina would be more forgiving given the heinous crimes she’s committed but I guess not if her revenge on a ten-year-old is anything to go by. I’m not saying any of them are worthy of forgiveness or not but if we’re gonna forgive a child mass murderer we might as well forgive everyone else. 

Aladdin! If Ouat in Wonderland is anything to go by, becoming a genie is a huge sacrifice!

Blue! You got big for no reason! Why does she keep doing that this season? It goes against her abhorrence at Tinker Bell doing that.

Blue: “no one knows exactly (why the Black Fairy turned evil).” Another lie! Blue was literally there when it happened!

This must have been one of the only times Belle got out of the castle during her stay of a few months there.

Emma is so checked out this season and the last. Girl needs some coca cola or something.

Who sped up Belle’s pregnancy?!

Okay, but I am so attracted to the black fairy.

Also, she gives me Bellatrix Lestrange vibes.

You can tell she cares for Rumple by the way she looks at him. I’m not sure why she’s pretending that she doesn’t. Maybe I’ve forgotten something.

I remember those few episodes where I thought Rumple was half-fairy and Henry was an eighth fairy lmao!

Well, at least Emma was kind enough to be there for Belle. God knows not a damn soul else looks out for her.

“Can you push me on the swing, mummy?” What? Loooool!

Did Belle just freaking black out during childbirth in order to see Gideon? She must have. When I have kids, I bet I’ll just straight up blackout during the first 5 minutes of labour. So many times I’ve had stomachache I’ve ended up unconscious on the bathroom floor lmao. I just can’t handle it! 

Gideon: “You know what you must do.” Belle: “Go into complete batsh*t insane mode again?” Gideon: “You know it!”

Belle, why are you listening to a vision that is probably the product of being blackout-drugged up to your eyeballs on painkillers??!

Belle, honey, this is a little extreme. I get you wanna keep him safe from Rumple but it’s not worth sending him to live in the freaking clouds! Whatever Rumple is going to do, which likely isn’t to hurt his son, is not worth leaving your baby to the fairies!

And you’re trusting him with Blue of all people?! She probably wanted this to happen!

Gideon means destroyer. I knew he was going to be a villain from the moment she named him that.

Jesus, she is obsessed with that book. I mean, her mum died trying to save some books so I guess I shouldn’t be surprised. It’s like everything she does is to be like the characters in that book but, like, to a detrimental effect!

“Okay, Giddy Up, look after Mummy’s book and don’t damage it or get food marks on it! Byeeeeee!”

That was absolutely bananas, Belle!

I do feel for Rumple here. Lost another son.

These parents are supposed to be Jack and Jill. Aren’t Jack and Jill meant to be brother and sister?!

Emma, are you okay? You seem tired to the point of being a different character who has possessed Emma’s body since season 5!! I miss s1-4 Emma so bad.

OUAT Episode Analysis- Ill-Boding Patterns

Probably not a very good idea to expect this to be a very long analysis.  But this episode actually made Nasty Habits and The Bear and the Bow look good by comparison.  For the record, if any die-hard Rumple fans want to read this, please proceed with caution.  While I don’t necessarily bash him in this one, I do seriously question his logic/reasoning in some places.

So let’s talk about the flashback portion first.  Its right after Rumple became the Dark One, and he pops up in the middle of an Ogre War battle to pretty much disintegrate the ogres.  Although, I do question his claim that he killed ‘all of them.’  If he killed ‘all’ of the ogres, wouldn’t that mean they would have been extinct, and they wouldn’t have been around during the age of Regina, Snow, Charming, Belle, etc? But maybe he just meant all the ogres on the battlefield.  Either way, we’re also introduced to Beowulf in this scene, as he’s among the men who were on the battlefield.  We also see him wielding the fated sword; the one with the red pommel stone.   It apparently was forged with Light Magic, and that the person wielding it was sure to become a hero.  Anyway, sometime later, everyone is at the tavern, singing praises to DO Rumple for having saved them from the ogres.  But then Beowulf comes in, announcing to everyone that DO Rumple killed the ogres with Dark Magic, exposing him as the Dark One.  The weird thing is, the people in the tavern seem genuinely surprised by this reveal.  Why?  I mean, these people have been living alongside Spinner Rumpelstiltskin for years now.  They must have noticed his self-imposed limp is gone, and that he’s now a walking disco ball, right?  What did they think caused the obvious changes?  Really, why was this such a big shock to everyone in the tavern?  

Regardless, time goes on, but now Boy Baelfire is being bullied because his father is the Dark One.   Which is rather idiotic, if you ask me. I mean, they KNOW his father is the Dark One.  It’s like picking on the offspring of a crime lord, or someone in the Mafia.  It’s just something you don’t do.  Because it’s gonna get you killed.  Obviously, Rumple’s not happy about his kid getting picked on, and decides to have a ‘talk’ with the parents of the boys who are bullying him, despite Boy Baelfire begging him not to make it worse.  Out of nowhere, some villages arrive, saying this creature called the Grundel attacked and abducted some of the men in the village. They say Beowolf went off after the monster, but he hasn’t returned, leaving them worried.  Remembering how DO Rumple vanquished the ogres, they want him to go and stop the Grundel as well.  

So they go off to find the Grundel, but DO Rumple’s going on about how he’s not going to use magic because he promised Boy Baelfire he wouldn’t use it anymore.  Which begs the question of how he planned to deal with the Grundel, as DO Rumple didn’t really have any manner of weapon other than his magic. But the even bigger question is why he had Boy Baelfire come with him.  Considering how much he claimed he wanted his son safe from the ogres, why would he bring him along on this dangerous monster hunt?  In any event, on the way, Boy Baelfire finds out that DO Rumple brought his dagger with him, because he didn’t want to risk anyone finding it.  After brief exchange in which Boy Baelfire compares the dagger to his father’s old crutch, DO Rumple entrusts the dagger to his son.  They eventually find the cave where the Grundel lives.  But then it turns out the whole thing was all just a trick set up by Beowulf to frame DO Rumple for the deaths of the men taken from the village.  Because Beowulf wants everyone to see DO Rumple as a monster.  He even manages to wrestle the dagger away from Boy Baelfire in order to Dagger Command DO Rumple to remain with the bodies of his ‘victims,’ so the villagers could see the ‘proof’ with their own eyes.  But when Beowulf starts to go back to the village, Boy Baelfire manages to get the dagger back from him.  And, after some stuff happens, he realizes that no one in the village will believe DO Rumple was framed for the deaths of those men.  So, he ends up Dagger Commanding Rumple to kill Beowulf before he could reach the village.

Okay, so at first, I was all ‘what is this?’  Now, I am not a fan of Neal by any stretch of the imagination, but I did always like Boy Baelfire.  And….wasn’t he always completely against Rumple using his magic?  So I was wondering how they were going to explain away his sudden hypocritical attitude.  But then DO Rumple, seeing his son was planning to continue using the dagger to keep the other kids from bullying him, slips a memory potion into Boy Baelfire’s tea, making him forget everything that happened after they left the cave.  So now, Boy Baelfire believes his father killed Beowulf of his own accord and reacts poorly.  So, fine, that little inconsistency is dealt with.  But now it’s like they’re trying to paint Rumple as a good father who willingly let Boy Baelfire have the wrong idea in order to keep his son from being consumed by darkness.  I don’t know.  That just feels like ‘too little, too late’ to me. Besides, if DO Rumpelstiltskin was this against seeing his son’s heart become corrupted, you’d think he’d have been able to actually go with him through the bean portal instead of displaying a reluctance to give up his power.  So there’s a little part of me that wonders if DO Rumple wiped Boy Baelfire’s memory because he just didn’t like the idea of someone, even his kid, controlling him via the dagger, and that it wasn’t solely out of concern for his son’s soul. Then again, I could be wrong.

On the other hand, the fact that Boy Baelfire was capable of actually wanting to use his father’s status as the Dark One to his advantage does kinda make it easier to connect him with Neal. All this time, I was stumped how such a likable, noble kid like Baelfire grew up to be a colossal d-bag like Neal. But, according to this flashback, the trait of being willing to use unsavory methods to get what he wants was a part of his character all along.  The memory potion DO Rumple spiked his tea with just threw a metaphorical rug over it.

Come to think of it, however, this does bring up a tiny issue.  WAAAAYYY back in S1, when August was trying to masquerade as an Adult Baelfire, Gold decides that August can’t possibly be his son because his son would never try to control him with the dagger.  But again, as this episode shows, Baelfire/Neal was capable of such a thing.  But I can understand how A&E would have forgotten that bit.  After all, that episode aired about 6 years ago.  It’s highly doubtful they go back over 6 seasons worth of material when writing episodes.  The confusing OUAT timeline is proof of that.

Finally, there was that one final detail about this flashback.  At one point (I think it was during the final confrontation with Beowulf, when DO Rumple and Boy Baelfire were realizing no one would doubt Beowulf’s claims against Rumpelstiltskin), Rumple is all ‘it’s okay, because we can just move somewhere else!’  Oh, really, Rumpy-Rumps?  NOW you’re willing to move to another village?  After refusing to even consider moving when Milah was miserable and practically begging for a fresh start somewhere else, you’re able to agree to the prospect, now?  You hear that?  That’s the sound of me throwing a random object across the room in aggravated frustration.

Moving on to the present day, Gideon is still plotting to kill Emma, thinking that doing so will enable him to absorb her Savior powers or something.  Again, I fail to understand how he got that idea, but hopefully they’ll explain in a future episode.  Maybe when he finally figures out that he’s way off base.  But Gold finds him stealing the broken sword hilt from the Sheriff’s Station and magically knocks him out.  He takes Gideon to the clock tower (which seems to have been fixed off camera) and they go on for a bit about Gideon’s dumb plan.  At one point, I did feel bad for him.  He explains how, while growing up in the Dark Realm, the copy of Her Handsome Hero that Belle gave him as a baby had been a huge comfort to him.  Until the Black Fairy caught him reading it and did this whole twisted scheme to break his spirit.  Essentially, she gave him a chance to stop her from beating some other kid, but Young Gideon found he couldn’t bring himself to do anything.  Gideon now feels he acted like a coward, and now he needs to become a hero to redeem himself.  But I say he’s being too hard on himself.  When this incident occurred, Gideon was still a little boy.  Even if he decided to step out of his cell, there was nothing he could have done to stop the Black Fairy from hurting that other kid.  To label him a coward for that is nothing short of victim blaming.  For crying out loud, people.  Young Gideon was a little boy growing up in an abusive environment. He should not be blamed for being unable to fight back against his abuser.  Anyone who says otherwise is a depraved jerk.  Regardless, Gideon’s got it in his head that the only way he can become a hero and defeat the Black Fairy is by killing Emma.  Because he’s somehow convinced that doing so will enable him to absorb her Savior Powers.  Gold, instead of doing the logical thing by pointing out that Gideon could simply ask Emma to help train him in the ways of Light Magic so he’d become strong enough to defeat the Black Fairy on his own, decides to help Gideon repair the Fated Sword. Apparently, it can only be repaired with Shady Blue’s blood.  Because she was the one who forged it?  I didn’t quite follow that part.  Regardless, because Gideon taking Blue’s blood to repair the sword would cause his heart to become darkened, Gold volunteers to take Blue’s blood himself so Gideon wouldn’t have to soil his hands or whatever.  Which is stupid.  It’s like hiring a hit man to kill someone.  Even though it’s not your hand that pulled the trigger, the dead person’s death is still on you.  How is this any different?  I am asking.  And again, it doesn’t explain how Gideon thinks he’ll achieve instant hero status by killing Emma.  But Gold doesn’t seem to be thinking that far ahead.  Not that he’d give a bat’s behind if Emma died, of course.  He’s already proven that he wouldn’t hesitate to trick Emma into suicide in order to regain the power of the Dark One.  So he’s probably not going to really care if Gideon kills Emma.  The weird thing is that Belle seems to be going along with all of this, or at least buys the warped logic that Gideon will be unscathed by the darkness if Gold performs his dirty work for him.  I just don’t know with Belle anymore.  I get that this is her son and all, but he’s planning to kill someone who isn’t supposed to be an enemy because his mind is off on some bizarre tangent.  Not to mention the person Gideon plans to kill is the True Love of one of Belle’s friends.  (Are Belle and Killian still friends?  It’s unclear.)  I really don’t know what to think of Belle right now.

Meanwhile, we get a subplot with Robin Clone.  It turns out the fancy box he swiped from Regina’s vault contains potions he plans to use at the town line in order to get out of Storybrooke.  If you remember back to the start of the season, Evil Queenie put a barrier wall around the whole town to stop Snow and Charming from escaping when the heart-controlled Count of Monte Crisco was on the loose.
