Skate Canada's pushing of Piper and Paul was penny smart and dollar stupid. At least I think they woke up towards the end of the season and we'll see more investment in Marjo and Zak moving forward.

I think C/B will def retire, P2 could go either way (they will if they're smart, their criminal overscoring gave them the wrong impression and Canada needs a young team to be able to move up), FB/S will stay if they're able, and I'm pretty sure the Italians will continue. The only thing that could throw a wrench into things is if Russia is allowed back in - they'll be aggressive and they'll push for a podium finish to secure spots (otherwise why would they be making StepBuk contintue?). So the only medal I can see F/G potentially squeezing out is a bronze this upcoming season. If the situation continues like this, I can easily see P/C try to come back because these teams are truly holding the door open for them.

As for the Finnish team, we have to look at it from the perspective of how Finland has stepped in to host events and these medals have sort of been their repayment for it. The best thing about it is that Pirihara get to go to Europeans and Worlds next year. We also have to look at how the different feds are trying to court Italy because it's hosting the upcoming Olympics. The Finns are with an Italian coach, a lot of teams/skaters are training in Italy, so on and so forth. What's interesting is that it looks like the Russians are trying to adopt the Montreal model and moving all the teams to Zhulin to concentrate power (I'm 98% certain that's where Khuda/Bazin are going). There are too many unknowns atm to say anything for sure, but in terms of who will cement themselves within the next 2 years as the team to beat, my money is on LaLa - they have the talent and the tenure.

Yoooo I was right! Khuda/Bazin to Zhulin! Lmfaoooo if he can't get skaters from multiple other countries to come train there, his dream of being Russia's response to Marie-France is dead. Not doubt Finland stepped up in a big way, and I also do think T/V are a good team, but their scores and especially the GOE does not match what is being shown of the ice and that's my main criticism. Like they have great lifts but was their combo lift the best of the season? Hell no, their twizzles are often horrible, some of their moves are basic, and the themes they use are repetitive. That should be reflected in the scores.

Also agree about the Russians, I legit fear their return, men is tolerable but the rest of the disciplines are legit suffering tremendously from their presence as much as it's unfortunate to admit as I don't like generalizing about skaters from the same federation this way. But no way in hell should they return, not while they are still state-funded and institutionally doped.

The russian federation is 100% trying to make Zhulin as a copy of I.AM, it's basically I.AM if they were racist, abusive, and sucked at choreography and packaging. They are now sending most teams to him and I won't be surprised if Krylova's team will be convinced to move to him as well. And once he will have top 5 Russian teams and Russian is allowed back in, they will push for teams from Italy, Georgia, Spain, and so on to go to him as well until he will become a dance hub like I.AM is and increase his political force. And this might be the worst development of them all (maybe tied with having Eteri and her minions ruin women skating again, and having Russian pairs doing shitty programs with sbs 3Lz and quad throws and winning stuff). You dragged your best friend Kim Ye Jin through the crowds to the kitchen of the big mansion. It was Byun Baek Hyun‘s famous Halloween party and everyone with a popular image or friend received an invitation. Luckily your boyfriend Min Gi was good friends with the notorious Byun so he received an invitation nevertheless.

After finishing some shots with Ye Jin and some strangers you soon found yourself tipsy in the livingroom on a couch watching people grind into eachother on the selfmade dancefloor.

„Oh, baby. What lucky man I am.“

Min Gi appeared behind the couch peppering a kiss on your exposed shoulder. First you wanted to flinch back at the sudden intrusion but as soon as you heard his voice you relaxed and leaned into his touch.

„Cheesy. But I am pleased you like it. You don’t look so bad yourself by the way.“ You checked him out and he wore all black clothes and the mask from the movie ‚Scream‘.

Just the moment the tall boy was about to sit down next to you some of his friends called him to join in playing beer pong. Your boyfriend looked to you asking for permission although you just met at the party but you knew you had him for the whole night afterwards. Min Gi pecked you one last time, pulled down his mask and made his way over the already messy place to his boys.

Ye Jin handed you another intoxicating drink and you joined the other masked people onto the dancefloor. After drinking half of the cup she handed you before you became a laughing mess and your movements got sloppier the more you drowned down the liquid.

You were dragged by Ye Jin and some other guys into another room and you sat down into a big circle. Everybody was having a great time and your heart stopped for a second when you saw Min Gi sitting down in front of you on the other side of the circle.

Oh, you nearly forgot you were in a relationship but as Min Gi just gave you a little wave with his hand you thought it would be ok for him. And you always could decline and drink if something went over the edge.

So the game began and people made up the most ridiculous ideas for the group and you cringed a lot of times when things got more heated. And to your bad luck the bottle stopped at your form after some time.

One of Min Gi‘s friends named Park Chan Yeol spinned the bottle again and a mischievous smile appeared on his face when he saw it‘s next destination. It stopped at Min Gi. The boy eyed the bottle and after that your form. He tilted his head a little bit to the side and you had to suppress an ashamed smile.

Your gaze went back to Chan Yeol to wait for his decision and you wondered why he eyed Min Gi with a piercing look.

„I dare you to... go into the storage room for seven minutes in heaven!“

The group cheered and you laughed at his statement. It was not something too exciting since you two were in a relationship. Moreover you were happy you could get a taste of his sweet lips so you eagerly stood up and grabbed Min Gi to go and start your mission.

Up in the room someone locked the door from the outside and it was so fucking dark you couldn’t see your hand in front of your eyes. Right at this moment you managed to recognize you were actually drunk. So as your form wavered a little bit you reached out your arms and touched Min Gi for support.

„Ah, I am sorry. I don’t know what Ye Jin gave me back then.“ Min Gi supported you and grabbed you by your waist to decrease the space between your bodies. You dazzlingly smiled at that although he couldn’t see you.

Suddenly he took off his mask guessing by the sounds that came from the direction of where his face was located and started to pin you against a wall. His cold lips grazed over your heated collarbone and he placed feathery kisses here and there. Your body instantly reached to his touch and desperately leaned into him. He slightly licked your lips and parted your lips with his tongue to get entrance into your mouth. Of course you let him and lost yourself in a passionate and slow kiss.

You can’t exactly explain the feeling that came over you next but you knew something wasn’t right when he went back to your neck. The pain you endured was small in comparison to the sudden orgasm that shook your figure. How did he do that with just a biting kiss?

You decided to go to the bathroom and freshen up after what happened. You nearly freaked out when you washed your hands and observed your form in the mirror.

What the actual fuck.

Your neck was decorated with two points and blood tickled down from them. It actually looked like a vampire had leaved those marks. And of course no one questioned it because it was freaking halloween...

Your fingers gingerly ghosted over the wound and you flinched back when it hurt. So this was real. This really happened. Definitely no. You were going crazy. Ye Rin poured something into your drink. You were just too drunk. There had to be logical solution for this. Min Gi is a sadist and he didn’t told you.

Tissues cleared the two pointy wounds and you drank some water from the watertap to calm down and after some time you decided to go back to the party and find Min Gi to ask why he had literally bitten you.

Luckily you found him downstairs and called out his name but although the music was so loud he seemed to hear you because his gaze instantly shot into your direction. To you dismay he decided to ignore you and turned around to make his way to the exit. Was he running away from you?

A chase began and right before you were able to tuck on his sleeve someone pulled you back and Min Gi managed to leave the house.

„What the-“

„Baby, I searched for you everywhere! What did you do all the time? By the way, Ye Rin is looking for you, too.“

„Are you kidding me right now?!“

Your gaze went to him and back to the exit where ‚Min Gi‘ just managed to slip out. Was this even possible? Or was your mind playing games with you? Who was this other person you had just seen?

„Baby, what are you talking about?“

„But y-you just went outside. I saw you leaving through this door exactly one second ago!“

„Ehm, Y/N, I am standing in front of you exactly right now.“

He pulled down his mask and surprise it was indeed Min Gi. Was there another person dressed like him? But why would they have acted like your boyfriend back in the storage room? No, it had to be Min Gi.

„Stop messing with me. We were back in the storage room not even half an hour ago. Don’t you remember? Look at my neck, I really don’t know if I am the drunk one or you. And by the way, that shit really hurts now and how did you do that even? Some fake fangs or what? How sharp are those stupid things nowadays?“

You pointed at your neck and Min Gi inspected the still reddened place with a quizzically look and you could bet you saw some anger flashed in his eyes at the sight.

„Babe, I think you drank too much. We should go home now.“

„Can you please answer my questions first?!“

„Ok, of course it was me with you in the room. I just wanted to mess with you a little bit.“

Before you could say something else he just took a hold of your arm and dragged you outside and called a cab. You decided to stop your interrogation and wait until you were home.

„So, can you please talk with me now?“ He came back from the kitchen and placed an ice cube on your neck that made you flinch back.

„Shh, calm down first. Give me the chance to inspect that a little bit closer because I think it’s not that bad.“

He leaned in and suddenly placed his lips over the wounds and you shuddered at his cold kiss. The pain turned into a pleasing sensation and soon vanished after Min Gi pulled back to observe your eyes. You felt slight dizzy after whatever he has done to you.

„Hm, I don’t see anything baby and I really don’t know what you were talking about back at the party. Go look yourself!“

You rolled with your eyes.

„Min Gi, just because you’re kissing it doesn’t mean it simply goes away. Look, you could’ve just told me if you were into something like that...“

But as soon as you emerged the mirror you couldn’t believe your eyes. There was indeed nothing. No holes. No blood. And no pain when you touched the area.

I was browsing old threads in ASN (because I honestly have nothing better to do with my time atm) and I found out that, apparently, there was an ATLA book that was published before the series had ended and that pretty much spoiled all the events from the finale. Um... what the actual fuck? Whose stupid idea was it to publish a book like that before ATLA had even ended its run? Were you spoiled? Were the forums thrown in complete chaos? Thank god I didn't have internet connection back then.

Oh, wow, old ASN threads? I shudder to think what posts of mine you’re stumbling across. XD

But yeah, the Great Spoiler Season. Ah, those were wild times. Well, you know, as “wild” as online fandom gets for a kid cartoon. Lives were lost, heroes were forged, and Nickelodeon had its second stupidest moment in the history of the franchise.

Before I go into details, I just want to say that I think the ASN staff handled the whole thing very well. There were no good choices, but they made a choice, were decisive about it, and they all worked hard to make it the best choice. I’m about to describe a crazy situation, not try to throw shade at the people who had to deal with it.

So.

The craziest part of this is that the novelization of the finale was only PART of the situation. Just after I caught up and joined the fandom (right after DoBS aired), Nickelodeon stopped airing new episodes in the United States. But a Canadian affiliate went on to show two more episodes, The Western Air Temple and The Firebending Masters. And then Nick US proceeded to not show any new AtLA for SEVEN MONTHS. Of course, fans outside of Canada went ahead watching those episodes and wanted to discuss them. But then you had people who, for whatever reason, didn’t.

To protect the unspoiled, ASN created a separate Spoiler Board. So, for example, there were two shipping threads, one with spoilers and one without. The spoiler board was flooded with discussion, while the ‘outer’ board languished. People posted in both, but in the ‘clean’ one had to be careful to feign ignorance or just not talk about certain things. The mods edited posts as necessary, gave warnings, etc. It even got all grassroots, with a Spoiler Defense Force of spoiled users who would warn the others when spoilers slipped through and notify the mods as necessary.

This went on for FOUR MONTHS.

In April, a new DVD was going to be released that would contain the episodes aired in Canada, as well as additional episodes that hadn’t aired anywhere: The Boiling Rock, parts 1 & 2. We figured that Nick USA would HAVE to air the episodes before the DVD hit, right? Not helping was the discovery of a “press sheet” (scanned here) that claimed the finale would be airing in May.

(And also claimed that we would get 3 one-hour animated movies that would air on TV! The Mike and the Bryan have mentioned in interviews that they pitched a Finding Ursa special and were denied, so what were those movies supposed to be? Were they ever really approved?)

April rolled around with no aired episodes. New York Comic Con had a panel with the Mike and the Bryan, and news came out that the finale wouldn’t air until July. JULY?! What happened to the May release date?! The DVD came out. An employee in a Blockbuster Video store watched it before its official release and put spoilers about TBR online. We all struggled to accept that Zuko actually says, “That’s rough, buddy.” We all rushed to either buy the DVD or watch pirated rips. I watched a rip, and wondered if the sound was weird because Mai sounded a bit off.

An now the spoiled people were even FURTHER ahead of the unspoiled. The Spoiler Board was on fire. We knew about Mai’s betrayal of Azula and sacrifice! And we couldn’t say anything about it outside! It’s a good thing there was nothing like Tumblr, back then. Can you imagine if this chaos weren’t confined to message boards and Livejournal?

Then May came around, and we got... THE BOOK.

The novelization of the finale.

The ending of the story was released to the world in the form of a poorly-written kiddie book that simplified a lot and made some leaps of logic. (It claimed that Aang thinks of Katara at the crucial moment in the fight against Ozai.) So we had the normal discussion forum, the Spoiler forum where we could discuss the unaired episodes, and the ultimate spoiler THREAD where the novelization could be discussed- and only in that one thread.

Unlike the unaired episodes, a lot of people avoided the novelization. Again, I have to express gratitude that Tumblr didn’t exist, and also praise the ASN staff. I was among the ones who didn’t want to get any details from the book, and I managed to stay unspoiled for two months until the finale (and the last of the regular episodes) hit TV. I might have seen a few small details (I think maybe I knew about Zuko telling the gAang about the war meeting and Ozai’s plan, and an appearance by the White Lotus), but I definitely recall being surprised by most of the finale, so I couldn’t have been spoiled about much if anything.

And then, finally, the fandom was reunited once again. We all watched the finale, freaked out, and gushed for a solid three months.

The Why of it all goes back to that press flyer I linked above. Note how the finale is listed as airing in May, the same month the novelization came out, just a month after the New York Comic Con panel meant to hype it all. I believe that the original intention was for episodes to air in March and April, so that The Boiling Rock would have aired just before the DVD came out, and then the finale would have aired before (or at the same time as) the book coming out.

When the episodes were pushed back, nothing could done about the book release because it was already in the pipeline with the publisher and stores, so it came out as originally planned despite the weirdness. The publisher was probably thrilled; spoiler-junkies who wouldn’t have normally cared were buying the book. I think scans also went up online fairly quick, but I might be wrong.

But why were the episodes pushed back? It couldn’t be that they all weren’t finished, because TBR was on the DVD. Was the finale itself not finished, and so TBR was held back so that there wouldn’t be a big gap after the lead-up? That’s my best guess, but it’s also possible that some Nick executive looked at the schedule and decided, after things were already in motion, that July looked like a better environment.

And that is the story of the Seven Month Schism.

And it still isn’t the dumbest thing Nickelodeon has done with this franchise. XD

Hi! I remember that trip you took to Europe all by yourself, and I have to tell you that's one of the most inspiring things I've ever seen. And I honestly mean that. I'm starting college this year and it's been a life long dream of mine to do the same (I live in Europe btw so it's a bit easier for me maybe). . So I wanted to ask, was it scary, how did you talk yourself into going, would you go again, do you have some advice on how to spend as little money as possible etc?

I would actually LOVE to do it again; it was the best vacation I’ve ever taken. 

I actually tried to talk myself OUT of going; I knew it was a bit nuts. I’d never been overseas before (I’d travelled a bit in the States at that point, but the only time I’d been out of the country was a day trip to Canada when I was 14 or so), and to just throw yourself headfirst into overseas travel by doing a solo three month trip is kind of batshit. But I’m kind of batshit, so it suited me.

I did a lot of research by reading blogs and articles written by backpackers who had done what I wanted to do, so I knew it was probably something I would enjoy. I also like doing things by myself, so I knew I probably wouldn’t have any major issues with loneliness, and I’m comfortable chatting up strangers, which is the name of the game when you’re a solo traveler. And I think those are really two of the most important things to consider when you’re backpacking by yourself: put yourself out there. You’ll meet some amazing people and when you do feel that pang of loneliness, you’ll always be able to find a companion to go sightseeing with. At the same time, don’t be afraid to do things by yourself; I did a lot of solo sightseeing, and it was amazing. You don’t have to get a consensus from a group on who wants to do what; no one argues; no one wants to do things their way. You just pick wherever the hell you want to go, and you go. Some of my favourite parts of my trip involved me just rambling alone around some city. I actually found a really amazing little archaeology museum in Croatia that way.

As for keeping costs down, Nomadic Matt  has a lot of really good general tips and also breaks down average costs and accommodations by region. I would definitely take a look through his site; I used it for some of my research. You have a huge advantage as a European; there are tons of budget airlines and bus lines you can take advantage of. Airfare was one of my biggest expenses; a roundtrip ticket from the west coast of the U.S. to Ireland (where I started) isn’t cheap. 

Some hostels will occasionally do free dinners for their guests, so you might want to keep an eye out for that sort of thing (they’ll usually advertise on their website). There was a hostel in Budapest that did a free dinner for the backpackers on Tuesdays and Thursdays, if I remember correctly. They would make traditional Hungarian dishes for us to try, and everyone would sit around a big table and eat and chat. There was also a hostel in Scotland (Inverness, I think?) that did a haggis dinner for the guests. Some of them also have restaurants attached that are decently priced for budget travelers. Mostly, however, I would just look up the nearest grocery store and stock up on a few essentials. I’d usually buy some rolls, maybe a bit of cheese, some stuff for a few days’ worth of breakfast, etc. I usually would get a bunch of greens and some vegetables too so I could make up some cheap, easy salads. The vast majority of hostels will have a kitchen so you can store your food and also have a place to prep it if necessary. It’s worth popping into little cafes sometimes, too. There was one right round the corner from my hostel in Belfast where you could get a huge bowl of oatmeal for £3; it filled me up till lunch when I would snack on whatever I got at the grocery store. I stayed three days and ate there every morning. 

Some countries and cities are just going to be more expensive than others. London was a lot of fun, but it was also fucking hell on the wallet. Once you start getting into eastern Europe, everything starts getting a lot cheaper, so that’s something to keep in mind. The hostel I stayed at in Croatia cost me $10 a night. Also, if you want to see a lot of popular tourist attractions, look into whether or not there’s a city pass; lots of cities have them. Buying a city pass will get you into a bunch of the major attractions at a heavily discounted price. Remember that paying to see certain attractions is worth it, but you can honestly wander across some really amazing stuff just by heading out on foot and getting to know a city in a way that riding a tram or bus will never allow you to become acquainted with it. 

Was it scary?

Yes. You’re striking out, completely alone, for a country full of strangers speaking a language you might not even know. If you’re not a little bit nervous about that, you’re probably a little bit stupid. It’s ok to be scared. Honestly? When I was boarding my flight to Dublin, there was a moment when I didn’t know if I could get on the plane. That was partly because I have a pretty severe phobia of flying; but it was also partly because I stopped and said to myself, what in the holy MOTHERFUCK am I doing?? It was insane. Probably someone was going to rob me and then later I would be murdered and my mother would get to say, “I told you so” over my grave while in hell I cursed and gnashed my teeth at the murderer who enabled my mother to get to be smug about my disastrous failure as a traveler and human being in general. It’s scary; for those few moments before you internally slap yourself as you’re frantically calculating all the things that can go terribly wrong when you step foot outside familiar soil, it’s paralyzing.

It was also, hands-down, one of the most amazing experiences of my life and I don’t regret a second of it. You will be frustrated. Unless you have a far better sense of direction than I do, you will get lost. A lot. (Just keep walking until something looks familiar; you’ll find your way back eventually. And if all else fails, find the nearest shop or tourist booth and make a self-deprecating sad face and pull out your map. A roommate and I once had a Hungarian man who really didn’t even speak English help us try to read a map while we were wandering, completely lost, around Budapest at like one in the morning. People will help you.) Sometimes your card won’t work on a tram ticket machine in the Netherlands because you didn’t know those fuckers only take Dutch bank cards and you don’t have any proper currency on you because you just took a bus in from London and all your money is still in pounds and you’re stranded in the middle of  RANDOM PARKING LOT WHERE THE BUS JUST DROPPED YOU OFF WHICH YOU THOUGHT WAS GOING TO BE AN ACTUAL BUS STATION BUT IT’S NOT (thx) AND YOU WILL WONDER HOW THE FUCK ALL AM I GOING TO GET TO AMSTERDAM FROM HERE. Take a deep breath; you will have moments like that. You will figure out how the fuck all you’re going to get to Amsterdam from there (plead your case to a kindly tram driver and they will give you a free ride into the city; it helps if you first make friends with an English/German woman who will also plead your case + point you to the nearest ATM once you reach the city). 

It will make you a better problem solver; you will come away with an immense satisfaction. To rely so completely on yourself, and to succeed, even imperfectly, is so ridiculously gratifying. 

All you need is a little common sense and enough guts to push yourself into actually doing it. I promise you, it’s much easier than it looks.

MIKE HANLON - KIDCOT STATION AT THE CANADA PAVILION, EPCOT CENTER THURSDAY, OCTOBER 8TH 6:55 P.M.

There were two hours and five minutes until the Epcot fireworks show began, signalling the imminent close of the park, which meant there were three hours and five minutes until Mike Hanlon could finally clock out.

Not that he was counting, of course.

Sighing, he shifted in his seat at the Canada KidCot station. He’d been scheduled for an afternoon 8 hour shift, 11 to 7, but they’d asked for someone to extend because they were short-staffed and he apparently couldn’t help himself. He agreed to work until close, which was an extra three hours. Normally, he wouldn’t be phased by that, but he was bone tired today. He’d been up late with his Imagineer roommate, poring over plans and ideas for Star Wars.

He should have known better. No amount of arguing for Lando Calrissian or Finn was going to make Bob Iger, the CEO of the company, less racist, which meant that there was little to no hope for representation in the new Star Wars World. His roommate Ben had tried to warn him, but he’d pushed the issue anyway, feeling restless and irritated that he worked for a company that didn’t value people like him.

Now, he was paying the price. He stifled a yawn as a mother with two children hustled them by his table - he would kill for someone to actually talk to, but he wasn’t the type to hustle people over to him Gaston-style. (The Magic Kingdom Gaston was notorious for cat-calling girls, which Mike supposed was in character...but it was deeply unsettling to watch.)

Sighing, Mike picked up a marker and began to color one of the Duffy* drawings at his station. As bored as he was, he wouldn’t want to be anywhere else. Disney, for all its flaws, was more of a home for him than Canada had ever been, and KidCot was his favorite rotation. He loved telling stories and teaching kids about his home country - he loved teaching.

He loved Canada, too...it was his home, after all, but it had never been freeing for him like Florida had. Home came with expectations - from his peers, from his teachers, and most of all, from his parents.

Mike loved his parents, but he was definitely not the son they needed. He had no interest in hanging around and taking over the farm. His dreams were bigger than that.

His parents, for their part, had totally supported his move...at their own expense. He felt guilty about that sometimes, but he had a feeling that all three of them knew, in their hearts, that it was the right choice for Mike to go.

He’d come to Disney World because he hadn’t known where else to go. Disney had a work program for international students that promised to give him opportunities to connect with people around the world, and that promise had really appealed to 21 year-old Mike Hanlon. It had been the right choice, definitely - his first three months at Star Tours had been like a dream. He got to talk Star Wars all day, he got to choose Rebel Spies**, the ride wasn’t that complicated, and he hadn’t had to slog all the way around the perimeter of Hollywood Studios to get to his attraction like the Tower of Terror bellhops did. (There had to be a more efficient way of moving around backstage, and someday, Mike imagined they’d invent it, but for the time being, it was long walks and bikes over at Studios.) All in all, it had been a perfect fit for him.

Then, he had three months doing outdoor vending (ODV) at Studios, and that was...less exciting, to say the least. ODV was hot, sweaty work, and the guests that wanted popcorn or pretzels or light-up Mickey ears were usually tired, hungry, and cranky (and sometimes racist). Still, that was manageable, especially when he got into the groove of Fantasmic shifts. In fact, he still picked up Fantasmic shifts from time to time, for nostalgia’s sake.

After that, his program was over, but he didn’t feel ready to do something else, so he went to Casting to see about applying for a more regular job (and what he would have to do to renew his US work visa). The only full-time position they had to offer him was in the Canada Pavilion, so that’s where he was for the time being. It wasn’t ideal (he was putting in to transfer back to attractions as soon as he was able), but he’d gotten that temporary worker visa for it, so he had no choice but to make it work. So far, the only thing that had been completely ruined for him was Martin Short movies, because after watching the Martin Short ‘O Canada’ film a thousand and twelve times per work shift, he’d sooner die than watch Three Amigos ever again in his life. (He considered himself extremely lucky to have found the roommate that he did via the CM Housing Facebook page, but if Ben put on Father of the Bride one more time, Mike was going to kick him out immediately and permanently.)

Mike finished coloring his Duffy and looked around. There were no kids anywhere in sight. It was around dinner time, and the Canada pavilion wasn’t a highly popular family destination to begin with, so Mike was going to be alone for a long while, people-watching as young hipster couples walked by with Disney shopping bags full of maple syrup and plaid clothes.

He was so zoned out, he almost missed the two attractive men that were walking out of a shop and towards him.

Now, Mike had spent quite a bit of time coming to terms with his sexual identity. His father extremely traditional - which was not to say close-minded, but there was just no opportunity for exploration on the farm. It wouldn’t have made sense.

Disney was on the extreme opposite end of that spectrum. A huge percentage of male Cast Members were gay, and for the first time, Mike had the opportunity to consider his own feelings.

As it turned out, he was pretty equally interested in men and women. He’d had a couple of short relationships during his time in the States with people of both genders, and they’d all been pretty nice...just, not lasting, and none of the people he had dated had been as compelling as the two men - a redhead and a boy with light brown curls, he could see now - that were walking his way.

It was a bit disconcerting, actually. Mike usually wasn’t attracted to white people (they were so entitled and pasty), but there was something almost cosmic about these two. It felt like the universe calling.

Before they got close enough to see him, Light Brown Curls stopped and turned to the redhead, holding up a Disney bag and smirking. The redhead blushed and grabbed for the bag, but Curls swiftly moved it behind his back. They began to engage in a game of keep-away. Mike was mesmerized.

“You trying to stamp their passports?” Mike jumped at the sound of a leering female voice, and almost fell out of his chair. “If you know what I mean?”

“Ma’am, I---” he began, turning to look at the perpetrator and stopping short when he saw her pretty green eyes. “Huh?”

She laughed prettily. “The ginger making an idiot of himself is named Bill. He works Guest Relations over at MK, and he’s been super hung up on these two guys he saw in passing in the Boardwalk slash Epcot area recently. Classic pining gay.”

Mike looked back over at the two men. The ginger (Bill) had retrieved his bag, and was waving it in front of Curls’ face. Curls seemed unimpressed.

“Is the skinny brunette boy one of the guys Bill was pining over?” Mike guessed, watching the bounce of the haughty man’s curls.

“Yep,” said the girl, joining Mike in looking over. “His name’s Stan, apparently. He’s a front desk coordinator over at Yacht, because of course he is. Everyone at Yacht is so fucking put together. Pardon my French.”

“It’s a relief to hear cursing every once in a while,” Mike admitted. “It can’t be princesses and rainbows all the time.”

The girl nodded appreciatively. “I like your style. I’m Beverly. I work in costuming over at MK.”

“Oh, word.” Mike stuck out a hand for her to shake. She took it, and he was immediately impressed by the subtle strength in her grip. “I’m Mike. You wanna learn about Canada?”

“At some point,” Beverly said, smiling amusedly. “Right now, though, I’m trying to play matchmaker.”

Mike squinted at her, confused. “Aren’t your friends already together, though? I thought you were just third-wheeling.”

“Fourth-wheeling, if all goes to plan.” Beverly waggled her eyebrows. “Weren’t you wondering who else Bill has a crush on around here? I did say that he was pining over two guys.”

Mike’s stomach lurched. Pretty boys weren’t generally in the business of looking Mike Hanlon’s way...unless he was reading the whole thing wrong?

“No, but there’s already...they’re already….” Mike protested weakly, hoping his assumptions were correct. “I couldn’t intrude.”

Beverly shrugged her freckled shoulders, looking down nonchalantly. “Two’s an arbitrary number, bud. You can do whatever you want.”

The boys’ eyes were on Mike, now - they must have noticed him talking to their friend. The redhead was smiling, and Mike suddenly felt hot.

Being with more than one person at a time had never occurred to Mike, but now that the idea had been planted, it was taking root in a really fast and embarrassing way.

“Bill, Stan,” Beverly called, beaming, “meet my new friend Mike. He’s from Canada.”

Feeling a little stupid, Mike gestured to his nametag. “Saskatchewan.”

“Mike from Saskatchewan.” Stan stepped forward, confident and smooth. “Very, very nice to meet you.”

Bill smiled knowingly. “Told you, didn’t I?”

“You were right,” Stan said, eyes never leaving Mike.

Mike looked between the two, hoping for an explanation, and Bill promptly provided him with one. “I saw you here the other day, talking to kids. You’ve got incredible charisma.”

Mike was painfully cognizant of the blood rushing to his cheeks. “Thanks. Uh. Bev says you guys are CMs, too?”

“Yep!” Bill tapped his chest where his name tag would be if he were in costume. “I’m in the Magic Kingdom, and Stan’s your neighbor over at the Yacht Club.”

“It’s a shame you don’t have any guests,” said Stan, examining the Duffy coloring pages at Mike’s table. “I don’t know why people aren’t flocking to you, honestly. You seem like the kind of person that I’d actually enjoy learning about Canada from.”

“Do you wanna hear some facts?” Mike asked, and then immediately cringed. Why couldn’t he say something compelling for once?

Fortunately, Bill and Stan seemed to find it endearing rather than weird. Stan opened his mouth to speak again…

...and was immediately interrupted by a freckly, frizzy-haired tornado of a human being, who swept in and slung his absurdly long arms over Bill and Stan’s shoulders. Mike blinked rapidly, trying to take stock of the situation, but before he could get his bearings, the new person adjusted his glasses and started speaking in a thick Russian accent.

“Eet eez veddy hahd, Comrade, for me to trahhck you eef you do not answer calls, da?” He was talking to Stan, but Bill seemed to recognize him, too, if his eye roll was any indication.

“Why the fuck did you need to find me at all?” Stan groaned. It was obvious that he was fond of this weird, lanky guy, but he was playing at irritation. “I turned off my phone for a reason, you nerd. Take a hint.”

“Eh, I was bored. Also kinda sad, thanks to Big Bill here.” The guy abruptly stopped with the accent, turned to Bill, and tutted loudly. “Can you believe that Bill stood in the way of true love today? Also, how the hell do you know Bill, Stanny?”

“We’ve literally just met,” Stan said, “and preventing you from feeling love is only serving to make him more attractive to me, so by all means, Bill, continue.”

“It’s not up to me,” Bill said sadly, “and tragically, Eddie does think he’s hot.”

The third guy inhaled sharply. “Hold on, say that last bit again.”

“Mike, this is Richie.” Bill ignored Richie’s request and turned to Mike. “He’s bad, sorry.”

Richie’s eyes flicked up to Mike for the first time. Mike sat awkwardly as Richie took him in, smiled, and said, “A fucking pleasure. Has anyone ever told you that red’s your color?”

“Just you,” Mike replied honestly.

“Glad I could be your first.” Richie winked, and Mike felt charmed in spite of himself.

“Okay, so how do we all know each other again?” Bev asked, frowning. “I know Rich because he’s a giant pain in my ass when he comes through costuming, I know Bill because I know Bill, and now I know Stan and Mike through Bill…”

“Richie’s my roommate,” Stan said flatly. “Unfortunately.”

Bill whipped around to stare accusingly at Richie. “You’ve been keeping that from me?”

“Hey, I didn’t know you were into stuck-up assholes,” Richie shrugged. “Besides, that’s justice in action for not giving Cute Character Attendant Eddie my number.”

“He was working,” Bill said defensively.

“He was working,” Richie parroted mockingly. “That’s never stopped me from hitting on him before, and it won’t stop me again.”

“I wouldn't,” Bill warned. “Eddie’s no joke.”

“Didn’t say he was,” Richie agreed, bouncing excitedly. “Did he actually say I was hot, though, because--”

“Where do you work, Richie?” Mike asked, trying to save Bill from the conversation.

Richie’s smile was huge and sweet. “The World Famous Jungle Cruise, of course! Why, you itchin’ to ride my bote?” His expression turned suggestive. “Because I’d let you. It’d be worth the long, painful death Stan and Bill would put me through--”

“Beep beep, Richie,” Bill said loudly, elbowing Richie hard in the gut. Richie doubled over on to the damp wood of the pavilion floor.

Stan quirked an eyebrow, obviously impressed. “Beep beep, huh? I’ll have to remember that for next time.” He brushed Bill’s arm with his hand as he said it, and the corner of Bill’s mouth twitched up. Mike was enamoured by the interaction, and wanted more than anything to be on the other side of the table, included in whatever it was they had going on…

...fuck, he was so fucking fucked.

“Richie, if you’re not here for any real reason, then you should come with me,” said Beverly, looking like she was already regretting her offer. “I was gonna ditch these three in a couple of minutes, anyway. Let ‘em have a Food and Wine date, or something.”

“You’re sweet, Bevvy.” Richie gave her a sappy look as he peeled himself off of the floor. “Askin’ me out. Adorable. Unfortunately, I’m gonna have to pass, because Bill, I’m not going anywhere until you promise to get me Cute Eddie’s number.”

“You’re really dedicated to that, huh?” Bill asked, tone halfway between ‘impressed’ and ‘alarmed’. “What the hell happened between you two to make you so frigging obsessed, Rich? Normally you’re all jokes and no follow-through.”

Richie tried to be nonchalant, but Mike could see a bit of red creeping up his neck under the collar of his shitty Toy Story t-shirt. He was silent for a moment, and then when he spoke, his voice was soft. “He’s just...I don’t….he’s all the stuff I like, you know?”

Mike looked at Bill, whose forehead was scrunched up in obvious concern at Richie’s words, and then at Stan, who had his hands delicately on his hips and was trying and failing to not seem affected, and understood that he, Mike Hanlon, knew exactly what Richie was talking about.

“Let’s talk more about this later,” Bill finally suggested after a long moment. “Okay?”

Richie nodded quietly. Something had happened in the last few minutes...it was like someone had toggled the Richie off-switch. Mike hoped it wasn’t something he had said. “Roger that, Billiam.”

“Hey,” Mike said, feeling suddenly bold in the wake of Richie’s vulnerability. “Listen. I can’t hang with you all now, because I won’t be off of work until 22:00. If you guys are free and still awake at that point, though, y’all can come to my place after I’m done. I can write down an address. I bet my roommate won’t mind.”

Bill’s responding smile could have lit up the whole park. “I’d love that.”

“Me too,” Stan said immediately, looking between Bill and Mike with a soft expression (well, soft for Stan the consummate professional, anyway).

“You want us there, too?” Richie asked cautiously.

Mike nodded, and was relieved to note that Stan and Bill were nodding too. “Dude, I could really use some friends. I’m fresh out of those.”

With that, the tension was broken. Richie let out a great howling laugh, and moved over to clap Mike on the back. “Oh, Mikey! You just hit the friend jackpot, my man. Just ask Stanley Uris! Richie Tozier’s a top notch amigo.”

Stan shrugged listlessly. “I mean, if you like people that try to give you sloppy handies every time they’re intoxicated.”

Richie’s expression twisted up, and for a split second, Mike thought he was gonna lose it, but then instead of yelling, Richie groaned. “They’re not sloppy, Stanley, Jesus Christ.”

“Jesus who?” Stan asked, reaching out to yank on Richie’s sleeve, which presumably was meant to signal that he was kidding. “Anyways, yes, the three of us will be there, Mike. Bev?”

“That depends,” she said slyly. “Is your roomie hot, Mikey?”

Mike couldn’t help but laugh at that. Ben was an objectively handsome man, but he was less sexy than he was warm and comforting. “He’s a beautiful, wonderful guy, Beverly.”

“Then of course,” she agreed, laughing her little laugh again. “Write your address on the back of one of these Duffys, yeah?”

Mike obliged her, and when he was done, Stan took the paper and folded it up neatly, ultimately placing it in the breast pocket of his shirt.

“All right,” Richie announced. “Parting is such sweet sorrow, Micycle, but we must go purchase overpriced cocktails now. Adieu.”

“Bye!” Bev called, and almost immediately, the two of them were off, merrily making their way to the main World Showcase walkway.

Stan and Bill lingered for another moment. They were both looking at Mike with expressions that made Mike feel like his stomach was going to explode with butterflies. He didn’t know what it was about these two that made him feel all of 17 again, but he wasn’t complaining. He hadn’t been this excited about romance since middle school.

Degenerate’s guide to college football tv watch ‘em ups for week 10, 2018 season

Somehow there are a couple of HUUUUUUGGGGGEEE! matchups this week and the overall effect is still a complete waste of time trash set of games.

I love it and hate it all at this point. Rooting for a repeat national title for UCF. Of course, this Bama team is one of the best talent collections in football history but I still don’t want them to win anything.

Now they’re a 38.5-point underdog against the same Clemson program, which somehow seems too low, and Bobby Petrino is probably going to get fired even with a $14 million buyout.

Very obvious game of the week choice, might be the game of the year. Might be a platform for the Tide hype to kick into a ridiculous gear. Night games in Baton Rouge are often a bad time for the visitors but Bama’s whole thing this year is bombing the shit out of their opponents in the early going so if Tua is who we  want him to be and it’s 35-3 at the half then where do we go? Alabama has a tiny little bit of apparent vulnerability at this point but I’m not sure if LSU has what’s needed to exploit the defense. Ultimately I view this game as a way to gauge how sure I am that Clemson-Bama IV is going to happen in the CFP first round or in the championship game.

You’ve probably seen by now that this is a replay of the Most Big XII Game Of All Time. I watched the end of that game. I fucking hated it. Getaway III

The next day was our last day. We had to check out of the flat at 10:00 a.m. so we had to wake up at 9:00 am. Obviously we didn’t want to wake up. Actually her phone never rang. Since I am becoming an old lady and I had serious stomach problems that weekend (Fucking Big King!!!) I woke up earlier than that and then woke her up. We were cuddling and fooling around until we couldn’t anymore. Actually she decided to count up to 5 for us to actually get up from the bed (we are SO disgusting sometimes lol).

Since my hair was being a mess already (fucking oil), I HAD to wash it. But she suggested me to just rinse it with water, nothing else. I told her that I was going to have really messy curly hair after it dries but she didn’t care. She WANTED me to have that hair so I just did it, I washed my hair without shampoo and waited for the best.

We waited for the guy to come. Apparently we were not supposed to wait for him but we did it anyways. I wonder what he thought about us. I think he knew we were not just friends coming to Budapest for the Museum but I couldn’t care less. That flat was like our own little heaven in this fucked up place. In the way to our train station, she wanted me to kiss her and I kinda rejected her. I felt so bad afterwards because she was like “You are not gonna kiss me right? And I was like no, I’m sorry”. After that day we talked about it (Open and Honest Conversations!) so I will get back to it later. Now, after checking out we left our things in a locker in Keleti and headed to our final day in Buda.

We decided to go for a walk close to this Uni I could change my master to. She was really excited to know the building. But before it, we walked close the river, kissed a bit and then stopped at this café close to the river for some coffee (boy, we did everything I have wanted to do since I saw this city for the first time, I love it so much). We had a nice conversation there holding hands and all. I tried to take a picture of her but it’s really hard to hold the girl still for a freaking picture (to be honest, pictures don’t make her justice at all). Then we headed to this Uni and she liked it of course. I remember that she told me, I SO imagined being here, picking you up after school, to have a nice day together (fuck why is she doing me this?? Making me imagine how perfect life next to her would be, it’s fucked up!!).

Then we stopped in front of it and had ANOTHER open and honest conversation. I told her that I was having doubts because the goal is not this fucking master (it has never been that shit to be honest with myself). That I would change if that would help me keep the job at this company and obviously live in Europe after it. I think she understood this perfectly, she now sees the real goal here and will support any decision I would make.

Then I really wanted to take selfies with her. We took a couple of selfies with the green bridge behind us. My hair was being a bitch but she was like happy to finally see my “Colombian hair” (I swear to god that woman is going to be the death of me). So, I told her “Ok since I have messy hair, you have to have messy hair too!” and she took her ponytail out and messed her hair a bit (Her hair is perfect, I really don’t know why she wants to cut it but I am trying really hard not to say anything and let her decide by herself).

We took the selfies with the messy hair (I sent one to my “BFF” just to show someone how fucking happy I was at that moment), and then we decided to walk through Buda and head for the museum. When we got to the museum we found out that there was a small market up there. We loved it. She made me try vegan ice cream, and look at all the stuff they were selling up there. She loved a pair of earrings she saw but since we didn’t have cash with us she couldn’t buy it. After wandering a bit, we took a couple of selfies together and then decided to hit the museum.

I was extremely tired by then. I mean, I only had a cup of coffee and some lemonade she bought for me but I needed actual food. I didn’t tell her anything because she seemed excited to finally go to this museum with me. We went to the toilet, I bought the tickets and the audio guide (I mean I HAD to buy something and I really REALLY wanted to invite her to this museum because I felt it was my thing to do). And I think she felt like that, she felt that I wanted to give her this, so she didn’t comment anything on me paying for both of us and we just went for it.

Like I said I was really really tired but I tried my hardest for her (I always do). We wander through the museum, I explained some paintings to her (the bullshit I always come up with when I am with her in a museum and she seemed to love). We were a bit carefree and started to hold hands, she hug me from the back, I don’t remember kissing (at least not properly) but we clearly were doing coupley stuff. I think she withhold it a bit because in each room we found this old ladies watching the paintings and I think they were a bit scandalized by our behavior (like I even cared), but yeah it was a nice experience like all the experiences we have had so far.

We went out of the museum and decided to look for an ATM. Something fucked up happened to me, one girl approached us when I was just withdrawing money and she said that I should not take money out of it, that she was being told by someone that the ATM was scamming people. Obviously that freaked me out. I had transfer the money for the flat rent in case I needed it so I could have been robbed about 300 EUR or so. I didn’t let her withdraw money from it so we looked for another ATM. I asked one lady from a coffee shop close to the other ATM about the scaming shit and she told me that she hadn’t heard anything about it so I calmed a bit.

I think that ruined our mood, so she said that we had to go back to the train station so we didn’t miss our trains. We walked down the castle, crossed the bridge and then found a coffee shop so I could check my bank account with her phone (mine already died). We sat in that coffee shop in front of the Basilica and I checked that thankfully everything was ok with my account. She insisted that I should try to contact my bank just to be safe but I really couldn’t do it. Coincidentially, a Colombian family was sitting behind us and I decided to ask them if they knew how to contact my bank from here. They were not living in Colombia, but in Canada, so they couldn’t help me much. At least the man said I should not worry if everything was ok after checking my account, that maybe us Colombians were a bit too paranoid.

Anyway, after it we HAD to head to the train station. We got there to get our things in the lockers, and say goodbye. The moment was heavy, was difficult, it was really too much. She almost started to cry and I told her “No, don’t cry” and she was like “why don’t you want me to cry” I could not answer to that. What I wanted to say was that I didn’t want her to cry because that made me feel like I was hurting her and that was the least thing I wanted to do to her. Actually, in that moment I gathered some courage and told her “You know, I am going to say something spontaneous without over thinking it too much, so why don’t you stay one more night with me in Buda?, I know you have to work tomorrow but maybe you can catch a train tomorrow? But yeah you have to go to work tomorrow I am stupid forget about it”. She thanked me for saying that, like thank you for saying what you really wanted to say in that moment, how you really felt in that moment.

But at the end, she didn’t stay and I had to hurry up to my train station to catch the last quick train back to this hellhole of a “city”. We said goodbye in the door of the metro station and it was a bit rushed because I told her that if I didn’t do it in that moment I was not going to go anywhere. But we had so many things left unsaid, so many things that I wanted to tell her and to ask her (about her calling me her girlfriend several times over the weekend), but I couldn’t. I live in this stupid town 6 hours away from her so we had to say goodbye and go our ways.

On the train back home something weird and special and interesting happened to me. The train was virtually empty and I was not sure if it was the right one. So I asked this guy who was the only one there and to my own surprise he was not Hungarian but from Croatia. He offered to stay with me in the same sleeping compartment so I was not alone at least until he got off the train. And so we started talking. Clearly, the guy came from a fun weekend from Buda and was heading back to his town. As expected, he tried to flirt with me initially (who says “if you ask a Croatian what is the definition of a beautiful girl he would tell you Colombian girls LMFAO”). But I knew I could get him eventually, and oh boy I did it.

At some point in the conversation he said something like (“Oh but I really love Vienna, I have been there 10 times already, have you been in Vienna?”) LOL Why did he do this to himself? Obviously, the only come back I could say was (“Of course, I know Vienna pretty much, actually my girlfriend is from Vienna”) I swear to God the guy was shocked!! I almost laugh right there in front of his face. It was really funny for me. But at the end we ended up having a nice conversation, he asked a lot of personal questions and I am proud that I could answer all of them with a strange calm and ease (I have to lie in one or two but who cares). And I felt so liberated by telling this to a complete stranger on a train that I was dating a girl, that I HAVE a girlfriend (and it feels SO good to say this).

Although, I’m not 100% sure if that last part is true or not (and I already told her this and she say “Well, next time you see her, ask her”). And I really cannot even talk about how I feel everytime we talk about this, and even Skype conversations are getting harder for me to write them here.
