I don't want to bother you but I was wondering if you wouldn't mind talking to me about your experience of figuring out you weren't straight. I believed I was completely straight my entire life until the last two years and now... Im confused. I'm almost 38 and it feels like this is something I'm either too old for or should have known all along.
Oh darling, you are never a bother. I’m not sure I’ve tagged my posts about me all that well and there are too many things in here. But if you really wanted to look you can actually see my whole damn journey on my blog. But I’ll do my best to tell the story succinctly. I’m putting it under a read more because shit did that get longer than I intended.
First, I am 38 years old. I married a man at 33 (2014), found the 1D fandom at 34, figured out I wasn’t straight by the end of 2015, got divorced in 2016, realized I was a lesbian in 2017 and came out at 35 to my super-conservative family. My ex-husband is one of my best friends and if we lived in the same city he’d be my wingman.
Second, compulsory heterosexuality is SO SO real. I am not a person that knew she was queer. I didn’t have crushes (that I intellectualized that way) on girls in my youth. I just thought I was broken. I thought I was a bad (straight) girl. I didn’t like boys that much (although I’ll always have a soft spot for RDJ, Christ Evans, and Hugh Jackman). I didn’t like sex with dudes that much. Again, I just thought there was something wrong with me.
I also grew up in the 80s and 90s (as you did) without the MOTHERFUCKING INTERNET. I was limited by the people around me who were (seemingly) straight and conservative. There was no discussion of heteronormativity or compulsory heterosexuality for me. I VIVIDLY remember being an adolescent in 93/94 and my conservative relatives saying that AIDS was what people deserved for being homosexual. I also remember buying a bracelet at the Body Shop with an AIDS ribbon that funded AIDS research. I remember hearing stories of Melissa Etheridge and her partner splitting up but keeping houses next door to one another so their kids didn’t have to suffer unnecessarily. As a child of a nasty divorce, that stuck with me forever. I was always here for gay rights long before I knew that included me.
So, when I tripped and fell into the 1D fandom in January of 2015 I was reading about things that I hadn’t studied before. I went to college from 2000-2004. At that moment you either did Queer Studies or Race Studies, not both. And I did a lot of Critical Race Theory. Intersectionality was REALLY new. I think we forget that information wasn’t always as available as it is now.
As I was reading about queerness and what it felt like to other people. I started to question a lot of what I thought I knew. And I made friends here who didn’t know me outside of this space. I know fandom is a mixed bag for many (and has been for me sometimes) but without my fandom friends I’m not sure I would be where I am. When people have no attachment to who you’ve been, you can be free to be who you are. At least that’s how it was for me. I was able to see that my marriage wasn’t what I wanted. That I’d been steeped in so much misogyny I couldn’t see straight.
Lord I don’t know if this is helpful. Looking back I wonder how I didn’t know. And sometimes my physical space friends who’ve only known me as out make fun of me for not knowing (in good spirits). I played FIELD HOCKEY. My favorite artist at 13 was MELISSA ETHERIDGE. But I really didn’t know. And I’m ok with that. Because I know now. And now, I live my best life. I’m lucky that I live in Los Angeles. I have a beautiful chosen family. I’m closer to some of my siblings because when I came out to them they looked at me and said, us too :) But they’re not out to our family.
The rest of my family didn’t turn me out but they’re also not supportive. And I get life from every story of queer love being accepted. Every story of parents being supportive.
Feel free to come chat any time. Or stay on anon if it feels better. But you’re never too old! And I’m not shocked you didn’t know.

All the numbers that end in 5 and 0!!!
oh hot damn! alright lets do this
5: What were you doing at 11PM last night? Sitting on my couch watching the office
10: What are you listening to? my nanny kid tell me a story about the balloons she wants to get on her birthday mixed with radio commercials
15: Can you text as quickly with one hand as you do both? No probably not as quickly, but pretty close.
20: What was your last thought before you went to bed last night? “oh fuck I forgot to meditate” haha
25: In the past week, have you cried? yes. Im a fairly weepy person, so a good commercial can make me cry.
30: Would it be hard seeing someone else kiss the last person you kissed? umm no cause it was a creeper guy from an online date haha. I totally dodged his first attempt with a hug but then he snuck a bird peck in as we pulled away. ugh!
35: How many more days until your birthday? a lot. I just had my birthday at the beginning of last month so I’ve got another 11 months till the next one.
40: Have you ever regretted kissing someone? oh yes. many stupid nights in college. but I don't really dwell on it at all.
45: Do you believe exes can be friends? I think depending on the terms of the breakup, sure. but I don't think thats realistic for a lot of relationships.
50: Why aren’t you pursuing the person you like? I am trying to enjoy the single life for a while and not worry about that so much. whatever will be will be.
55: Where are you going on your next vacation? no plans for vacation currently since the name of the game is saving money right now. but hoping to take a trip back to Europe soon. Thinking Amsterdam or France but my sister and mom want to do Thailand so we may do that. We shall see!
60: Have you ever played Spin the Bottle? Yup. Fun fact : my first kiss was because of spin the bottle. I was like 10 and at an all girls slumber party. I don't think we really understood the point of the game haha
65: How many boyfriends/girlfriends did you have in 2011? Ummmm I think just 1? I spent most of my early 20s single so I don't really remember.
70: Are you a monogamous person or do you believe in open-ended relationships? I personally am a monogamous person. I am fully supportive of anyone who does it differently, but just not for me.
75: What part of a person’s body do you find most attractive? Smile for sure. I love a good smile that can light up a room
80: Would you get involved with someone if they had a child already? Im not completely against it if it was the right person, but I would prefer if they didn't.
85: Have you ever ‘dated’ someone you’ve never met? Nope.
90: Have you ever gotten back in touch with an old flame after a time of more than 3 months of no communication? Ummmm not that I can think of. Maybe a hookup but I've never gotten back together with an old boyfriend.
95: Are you a player? Nope. I tend to get played.
100: Anybody on Tumblr that you’d go on a date with? Plenty. Y'all live too far away!
105: If a sexy person was pursuing you, but you knew he/she was in relationship, would you go for it? Hell no. That makes me so skeezed out.
110: If you could kiss anyone who would it be? Hugh Jackman. You just know he knows how to treat a lady right.
115: Ever made out with just a friend? Yup.
Hot damn!!! Hope you guys learned something today! Thanks for the ask boo!
