Vintage Aesthetic tarot decks ~a list created by your personal shopper <3 ~

as a tarot reader i've noticed that there's a clashing interest between having new, modern style decks VS having vintage looking decks that uphold classic art styles of the past. Many people probably think of the basic rider Waite decks or Marseille decks when they hear the word vintage decks, but there's actually a wide variety of beautiful, timeless cards that don't necessarily fit neatly into those categories. if you love tarot cards and are looking to expand your collection then this is a comphrensive list of decks I've found and some background on them! the affiliate links are in the title of each deck, so if you chose to buy from that click it would be no extra charge for you but would give me a small percentage. the enchanted tarot: This is actually a deck that I own and even purchased for my sister for christmas as well. This deck is LARGE, it's vertically pretty long and the backs of the cards are this gold and white regal design. Sometimes with decks you LOVE the art on them but the backs of the cards just dont match the beauty of the rest of the deck. that is NOT the case with this deck, wvery single card and every single detail about this deck feels nostalgic and purposful. the deck itself feels expensive despite it being $25 dollars. I feel rich holding it and it was clear as soon as I got it out of the box that I had a very deep bond with it. Every reading I've had with it has been ACTUALLY divine and incredibly accurate.

2. Ancient Italian tarot: this is also another deck that I own. I cannot stress this enough, the art in this deck is everything a 1960's witch doing readings in the back of a party would want. The art style is very classic with italian titles for each major arcana card. This deck would be perfect for people familar with either marseille or rider waite in my opinion, but defintetly for more ''skilled'' readers. (if you're getting it for aesthetics it doesnt matter.)

3. cosmic tarot deck: my friend bought this in a shop the other day and I was blown away by how pretty it was in person. I love the blue tones of this deck, and the sureal, astral feel it gives

4. the medieval scapini deck: this deck looks older than it is, it originated in 1985 and the cards themselves have very recent images embedded into them. for example, the queen of swords represents an intelligent woman rising above a small scene of kkk members (yes the kkk) among other things too, this was the artist's was of depicting a person rising above ignorance and bigotry. The reversed meaning of the card is a person falling for ignorant or biased narratives. I feel like the art in this deck adds a whole new layer of meaning to each card and it can easily go above your head if you arent paying attention to them! I love this deck and have a very deep connection with it

5. a jane austen tarot deck: this deck isnt vintage in the literal sense, but it has that aesthetic and feel to it. even the cardstock is very thick and durable with a unique texture. this deck itsef can actually be used for cartomancy as it has 53 cards with a playing card design to them, with a corresponding scene from a jane austen book paired with each card. This deck is perfect for cartomancy, journaling, prompts etc.

He goes for easy things, if he's raiding your kitchen cabinet, he will absolutely take the instant hot cocoa powder

Not so much green tea.

Drinks coffee too, but it has to be made very specifically and needs sugar and creamer

There's a mix drink that was popular (where I live) a generation or two ago, and I feel like it'd be a big favourite of Thomas' too: its cola (or instant lemonade), coffee creamer and sugar mixed together :)

Lester Sinclair:

Keeps decently hydrated while on the road

His fave is bottled mineral water, no bubbles

When he's home and has the funds and time, he likes making smoothies. If you made some for him, he'd be over the moon

hey I love your edits and I was just wondering what you use/do to edit your photos? Not to copy, just in awe!

omggg thank you anon!!! the fact u want to know at all means so much 😭💓 especially when theres so many people posting edits that have a much better understanding of how to edit photos than me!!! (may i direct you to the amazing @yesloulou and her gifs..) ask me anything im happy to share and for u to copy my techniques (??) send me any other questions u have if i dont answer them i cud talk abt this all day .. 🫶🫶

so! i use the mobile version of lightroom when im editing photos quickly e.g. on race day, and tbf, its my main editing app. if that doesnt click with u, theres also snapseed which is a google editing app that i also used for a while until i realised lightroom was free (a blessing 😭). I also sometimes use photopea as a rip-off photoshop if i want to do more crazy stuff 🤪🤪🤪

first thing is crop the image if it needs it. i have a preference for portrait photos, just bc i prefer the way they look when posted. i use all sorts of ratios, but my favourites are 3:4 and 5:4 just bc i think they work best with driver portraits! (hot tip: the rule of thirds is soooo helpful!! find a metaphorical 'line' through the photo and line that up with one of the thirds) (lightroom produces the grid automatically when u crop xxx)

the next thing i do with a photo is correct the lighting and colouring. there are plenty of tutorials online and i can go more indepth if u want, but i tend to favour lower contrast with low highlights (bc i hate when u lose detail in highlights. the bane of my existence). its usually the first thing i try, but if it looks horrible i'll try different things. to correct colouring, i use the tint/temperature sliders (im still learning how to intuitively use these rather than messing around and going hm. too purple right before i post). since most of the photos i edit r taken by super talented F1 photographers i rarely have to use curves, but sometimes i do! so i do that as well before i get into the meat of it if needed 😌

then i adjust the tint/temperature & vibrance and saturation until i'm getting the vibe i want (e.g. i love making max photos cooler toned). then i use colour mix to change anything specific about colours in the image (i most commonly use this to make daniel/charles' skin less yellow and more red toned, to soften any redness or to make max's blush pink). then i colour grade!

after that i decide whether the image needs sharpening, extra texture or dehazing, and then i add grain! i prefer a rough, understated grain so that you dont lose loads of the detail from the photo. here's some examples of before and afters of some of my more complex edits:

-> this one was lighting correction and colour correction! i also used curves im pretty sure 😭

-> exposure and contrast changes and colour changes/grading (can we appreciate this photo.. wow)

-> made photo brighter (pretty sure i lowered the highlights..) n changed the temperature of the photo

YES!! unfortunately i got. very tired after making this so this is only one hair type :( was gonna go into all the different types of hair textures but. i will just have to do that later. also keep in mind i drew this in like. 7 minutes its just a simple guide to get out the basic steps

^i didn't put music in this so. listen to whatever u want while ur watching this (its 6 minutes 40 seconds). also its slightly sped up this isn't real speed

elaboration of each step under read more:

step 0: look at other hair tutorials/pictures of real hair to figure out how light reflects off of them. then completely disregard that and just make things up (this is the best artistic process trust me i do it every day)

step 1: just get out that basic shape. it doesnt have to be anything fancy,

step 2: just fill it in and adjust the shape as needed

step 3: figure out how the hair moves and flows, which parts go out more (highlights), which parts are closer to the head (shadows/base), etc. i highly recommend just looking at pictures of hair online, or taking pictures of your own hair. for coily/curly hair, you just kind of have to do this for each curl/coil. one thing to keep in mind the highlight is in the middle of the curl/coil and the shadows are on the edges (usually). i'll elaborate more on that once i have an actual video for it

step 4: just make it so the edges of the highlights transition a bit more smoothly into the base color. it just helps for later steps tbh. try not to over do it, don't want to completely get rid of the highlight, just soften it

step 5: add more highlights with thinner brush. this should be where the light would bounce off the hair the MOST. i think i forgot to say in the video uhhh add in some base value too. maybe a few shadows. mostly this step is for highlights tho.

step 6: idk what else to put here sorry. ngl just get silly with it

step 7: it is very important to do one stroke per area in this one. do not lift your pen off the screen/tablet/whatever until the little area youre working on is one smooth transparent shade, then move on to the next. idk if i'm explaining this right hopefully this makes sense.

step 8: complete opposite as step seven. make as many strokes as you feel it needs. not TOO many, just enough to get some texture and then some yk? i recommend making a copy of the layer youre working on before doing this so that if you mess something up you can always go back to square one.

also a lot of these steps apply to pretty much any hair type just. in a completely different shape with completely different rules. which is to say its exactly like this but it actually isn't like this at all. which is why i plan on making other videos some day (hopefully) also look up "hair texture chart" it will help you find the words you need to look up good refs

remember: always get silly with it. the only rule to to make things up and change your mind 400 times. bring a 'fuck it, we ball' mentality to your art program that the haters (your brain) really won't like. practice makes perfect and all that, do NOT expect to get something good first try, sometimes i still struggle with drawing hair in a way that i like and just scrap the whole thing. also i'm not kidding about those real hair reference pictures it helps so so much

Theres 3 types of artists in this world. No more, no less. There are painters, sculptors, and draftsmen (not drawers, you dont put a lego set inside someone who likes to use pencils).

Now here’s where it gets interesting: you can be a sculptor, but never pick up a chisel. This is the part thats hardest for people to understand: the only difference between artists is how they use their tools to solve the problem, the problem being their artwork. You can be someone who hates oil paint and loves pen and ink, but still be a painter, it’s completely possible and natural.

What’s the difference, you might ask, ok I’ll explain. A sculptor is someone who creates volume, that is to say, they make stuff that’s three dimensional. Now if you are only using 2-D space, paper, how can you be a sculptor? By using line and shape and color and light to emphasize the form you’re trying to create. “But don’t all artists do that?” Yes! But a sculptor finds that making forms is more important than other things, and would emphasize it more than a painter would.

A painter layers light and color and texture, and creates harmony through this. If you find yourself thinking in layers? You might just be a painter. It’s very much the most common way of making art, and very easy to explain to the layperson. Start with white, add all the red, add all the green, eventually you have a christmas tree, see? Meanwhile a sculptor would see the strength of the tree and the shadow is casts first, and the color and contrast would come after. Where does your mind go when you have to solve this problem? That’s what we’re trying to answer here.

The final type is the rarest, and also the hardest to describe, but I’ll try. Draftsmen care about contrast, the difference between two planes, the difference between shadow and light. You see a bottle and want to draw the bottle, you make an outline to show where the bottle is, and where it’s not. It’s not just making the bottle come towards the viewer, it’s about showing that the bottle is NOT part of the table it sits on. This line cannot be confused with this other line, it is very clear what you are putting there.

Now perhaps you think, after reading this, that maybe you don’t fit in. Or maybe multiple descriptions suited you, and you’re not sure how you’d define yourself. Well the good news is that ultimately it doesnt matter, its just a fun way to describe your process when you make your artwork, and can help you point to other artists who share your disposition. If you want to be all three, I say dare to think different! However if you truly want to key into what makes you strong in art, or what makes your favorite artists strong, this can be a good first step to figuring that out. Good luck and happy arting :)

Hi! I was wondering what size yall were planning to make the voxels in relation to the player?

players will be 2 blocks tall, as akin with minecraft, however our work in progress player model has a bit more shape and detail to it such as proper jointed limbs. the character is 32 pixels tall, however some hairstyle options push it up to about 34 pixels (at most, but it doesnt effect collision). we talked about a 3 block tall character initially, similar to Terraria, but we felt it'd feel too off for players coming over to our game with intial experience from ones like Vintage Story or Minecraft. (still want to add 2 & 3 block tall doors though!) as for the textures, they work similar to minecraft ones when flattened out, making new types and styles easy using different template shapes for both us and if others want to mod new ones in. starting out we currently have 9 different models and with them we plan to have a good 30 or so types, not including the different hair colors. we may consider differing heights, but for now the idea of making even more variants of cosmetic items and armor and movement animations makes me shudder. as for now, we also have several gender/appearance options such as if they want their character to have a larger chest or deeper/higher voice for damage effects and whatnot as well. there's no voice acting, so think similar to the way voices worked in Ocarina of Time. Vil may not handle it well at first. you may need to explain to him that, no you can't just put more foundation on to cover the redness in your skin, thats only going to hurt and make it worse. and you very much do not just have a dry skin type, this goes far beyond that.

once he understands it is a skin disease, he will pause. you may even get an apology from him. Vil is likely to have you sit down with him and fully explain your experience with eczema. what makes it better, what makes it worse, so on.

being the expert he is not only in skincare but potions making he will probably make you some kind of cream for you to use. its soothing on the skin and anti inflammatory. something to take the edge off when you get a flare.

Rook

he thinks you're beautiful. the redness in your skin cuts like veins of marble. the scarring like patches of flowers. he could stare at you all day and every intricacy your skin shows. the cracks of dry skin to him look like a renaissance oil painting. the texture only adds to the tragic beauty of the piece.

Rook is always gentle when he touches you. he doesnt want to cause you any pain from pressing on a raw patch of skin or a healing wound. he touches and holds you like fine art. something beautiful he cannot let himself damage.

if you ever say you are insecure of any scarring, Rook will ask you if you can keep a secret. if you agree you'll get the chance to see why he always wears long sleeves. why the other students haven't seen him shirtless before. you can trace the scars along his arms and back, the ones over his chest as well if you like. he remembers each one fondly, perhaps he can teach you to do the same.

Epel

he doesnt really know what to make of it. you'll need to explain it to him, but he listens closely. hes gentle with any questions, but ernist in his desire for understanding.

poor boy doesnt know how to help, but hes quick to jump to your defense. if someone were to point it out or make an unwanted comment he'll be up in arms quickly, ready to defend you. looks do not define a person, and you probably put more effort into your skin then they do anyway.

Epel never looked at you strangely or thought of you differently. scarring, redness, or scaling, he never looks on you with pity either. for him it simply, is.

Wanna redo my old Bleach autism post as it’s pretty much gone anyways due to my remaking and I’m older but I’d like to do it with multiple characters this time. HOWEVER, I’m already so far into my reread I’ll go fucking insane if I do it right away as I’d have to GO BACK and reread again. Anyways, the focus was gonna be Ichigo, Orihime, Chad, Kisuke, Byakuya, Mashiro, Kensei, and Riruka. I tried to branch it out a bit so there’s main characters and then random ones but a few more is fine. I have more headcanons than this I just don’t wanna overdo it by including TOO many characters. This could be a fun project if I do it with someone else that feels the same way! Maybe get a person per character? Ichigo will be...a LOT, I’m sure. I don’t wanna forget that I wanna do this so I’m typing this out. I am VERY focused on Digimon right now and my one track mind shows but I do actually intend to do this. It won’t be an edit or anything like that. A long post more like? I can talk a lot but I’m not writer, y’know? Ectomorph - Meaning he is extremely lean with little muscle mass. He could eat as much as he wants but his body struggles keeping the wait. It doesn’t help that he simply doesn’t eat that much, to the point of sometimes only eating once a day (Much to everyone’s dismay)

Small chest, slightly larger hips and butt, little muscle, and sickly skinny

Can‘t catch a tan to save his life, but also doesn’t sunburn very easily. He might get some freckles though! They just fade when he’s not outside constantly.

Has asthma, though it’s not as bad as it could be because he took immunotherapy as a kid which helped with allergies. He forgets his inhaler a lot.

Autistic- He stims with his hands a lot, and rubs his patches (different textures). He also verbally stims, but he masks that most. In my opinion, most of his existing personality already aligns with someone with autism, but I won’t go into detail. (Also yes I am projecting with this diagnosis a tad bit but I do not care)

He’s the same height, just wears platform boots on top of that so he’s taller now.

Dry, fluffy, curly hair- He might have ringlets if it wasn’t so dry and sick. It gets bleached by the sun on top of the sickness so it’s extra pale. He probably bleached it at some point just for the heck of it. Point is, he has hair damage

Peircings- Right eyebrow, multiple on ears, used to have nose and bellybutton piercings

Eyes- there‘s no definite pupil how I drew them. This doesnt mean he has eye problems, though I wouldn’t be surprised. It’s to show he has a carefree look most of the time. He also has pale eyes too, which means they are sensitive to light and he would wear sunglasses if he cared about his eye health. Also he wears eyeliner, though it’s nothing special, just a wing or outline. He has under eye bags, whether they’re from his allergies (asthma) or lack of sleep is a mystery.

Injuries- he hurts himself often, so he has a lot of bandages. Usually he has bandages on his fingers, even though he might only have scabs. He doesn’t want to pick the scabs, and he thinks they look cute. The bandage on his neck is from a burn and the one on his nose is a cut. He also has messed up cuticles from biting his nails when younger a lot (another reason for bandaging them).

Hands- bandages from injuries, nail polish (he likes to paint them different colors, and when he starts biting his nails again he puts the bad tasting one on to stop himself, also his nails are very chipped), rings, usually up and in motion to emphasize his speech (he talks with his hands). He also writes reminders on his hands or arm sometimes. He’s ambidextrous.

Jewlery- various necklaces, bracelets, and rings from his travels. He has a belt chain and collects cute charms too. He also has a dog tag with his name on it, though a small corner broke off. He has clover and skull charms, some cuter ribbons and animal shapes (notably a dog one that he doesn’t take out too often) and an intersex charm for pride. He collects bangles, pearls, beads, kandi, and any type of chain or bracelet he can get his hands on. He also has rings on his fingers when they don’t have bandages, usually simpler bands and no stones. He has a ring from his parents on the same chain as his dog tag, but that’s one of the only ones he owns with stones. He wears a choker, and has a belt chain instead of a wallet chain.

Clothing- it’s the same, but the jacket and pants are more ripped up. His sleeves aren’t ripped either, but he has patches on his jacket and pants now. He especially likes the clover one on his right knee. He has patches from his travels as souvenirs, like locations, concerts, or shapes that symbolize something to him.

Shoes- They’re calf-high platforms with chunky bottoms. Lace-ups with scuff marks, but Special because he doodles on them when he gets bored (a lot of things about talents and hope on them, but also daily reminders for himself).

My approach to flat colors + limited palette drawings

This is a follow up to this post  i made about how i go about figuring out a color palette for my limited palette drawings. an anon asked me about my actual technique of finishing them so this is gonna be an explanation of how I work in a limited palette with flat colors. I ended up with these thumbnails for a sketch last time so we’re gonna work from here and I’m gonna sort of walk through how i got to the finished version

first things first: every part of this process is just developed as a result of me messing around. take my advice with a grain of salt and if you think you know a way to do something better/that makes you more comfortable. go with that over what I say.

I’m honestly a little surprised when people express confusion about how i draw like this because it’s SUPER simple - literally all you’re doing is just stacking solid color blocks of shape. its very imprecise despite how sharp everything ends up looking. 

First things first is that you want to decide how you will be handling your edges throughout the duration. Do you want your shapes to be ultra-sharp and precise, or do you want a little bit of a wobblier, grainier edge? Both can look good but it’s VERY much a matter of situational basis. i’ve been favoring looser and grainier shapes so that’s how i’m going to be working on this. 

on the left here, you can see the shapes made with precise rectangular selections and an untextured pen, on the right, freehand drawn shapes and a grittier pen. There’s something immediately pretty different feeling about them. So play around with that first - its not something that’s fun to change halfway through! But lets step back a minute. It helps to work large to small. The two biggest shapes here are these orange chunks and everything gets stacked on top of them so i’m gonna do that first. 

Now, a key feature of what i do: clipping masks. almost all digital art programs have them. What a clipping mask does is it constrains the pixels of a layer to the transparency of the layer below it. Here I have the light orange layer, and then on top of it the buildings and billboard are clipped to the orange. Most of you probably already know this and I’m overexplaining a bit, but there was a time when i didnt know how clipping layers worked and someone had to explain it to me.

now you’ll notice the shapes of the buildings are rough, and sloppy. here’s the fun part: since this is all about stacking shapes, only your exterior edges matter. this all gets filled in. be as sloppy as you want when you’re making your shapes. in fact, the outside edges get trimmed out a bunch to when i do this - i go in and erase them clean. Don’t be too finnicky about drawing perfect and precise! its a waste of time. As long as the silhouette is what you want, the interior can be a nightmare.

Working this way, it’s important to keep your layers stacked in a way you can make sense of. Right now there are four layers here: the background dark orange, the two main orange rectangle shapes, and then the buildings on one layer and a billboard on the other. I rack up a LOT of layers doing this and it makes it annoying in some aspects, but being able to freely recolor any one chunk without losing my detail is a key aspect of this.

So, I block those out

Next, I do the same for the smaller chunks that are still main shapes. There are once again, a lot of layers here. The top layer is the hair - you can see the head showing through it. The head and arm underneath the hair, same layer. Then the cup. Then the light green pieces of paper. Then the dark green ones.

The cup is technically farther forward than the head and arm so you would think it’d go on top, but the point isnt to recreate the foreground and background hierarchy with layers so much as it is to group things in a way i can work with. The cup goes underneath so it can be grouped with all the other objects on the table. 

now, i just go and fill in all the shapes. i forgot to do the blinds but i get them later. you might notice a lot of these shapes are pretty rough, which was harder to notice before they were filled in. Now that I can see better, I go in with an eraser and clean up the edges until they’re the shape I want 

sometimes erasing leaves little bits of ‘noise’ around objects like on this napkin here. i like to keep a little bit of this noise for texture, but if you dont like it make sure to get rid of it! if you’re working very crisp this will stand out a LOT

Next up is to add some detail onto the objects

I flipped the canvas here because the head shape was wrong - the ears were uneven and i wanted to fix it. I want to go about adding detail onto the billboard and buildings. i do all detail with clipping masks - but the objects are clipped to another layer and so nothing can be clipped to them. instead, i unclip them and just erase by selection for the same effect

all of the text on the papers is clipped to the papers below it. the buttons are clipped to the phone. the yellow photos and card are actually another independent layer on top, in case i want to recolor them separately. im indecisive and end up recoloring things a lot. For the most part these objects are starting to become recognizable as more than just shapes

i go in an add the details on the background and character now. theres some more stuff on the table. the lines of the face and ears are on one layer, and the flats of the eyes below that. Here’s what each group of layers is, and what they look like on their own

The background/bottom chunk. Just the table, window, and shirt.

The middle bit. All the stuff on the table and the blinds.

Finally, the top, which is just his head and arm. 

now this stage is the bare bones of the drawing. you can more or less tell everything that’s happening. it reads. but its very much lacking in something - it doesnt have a ton of depth or interest. and adding that additional detailing, the dept and interest, is where stuff starts getting REALLY tricky and subjective. 

im gonna take you to a much simpler scenario to show the sort of options i go through at this stage

ahh its our dear friend, sphere casting shadow. this is, more or less, the kind of image we have. you can tell whats happening but it’s lackluster. there are TONSSS of ways frm here that you can go add interior detail to a shape once it has been established. here are some quick and SUPER rough examples

from top left to bottom right: flat cel shading, softer airbrushed/gradient shading, halftone, and a textured brush. Each of these has their strengths and weaknesses. They can also be combined.

for example, here’s the solid cel shading being used to contain a gradient/airbrushed detail. This image - probably the single oldest piece of my art i still willingly show people - is entirely colored with gradients being contained in cel-shaded chunks. It has a sort of soft, luminous quality but without losing its crispness.

here’s a super quick bust with some variations of stuff going on. obviously this is no masterpiece but you see how different types of detailing can interact with each other and be used to distinguish materials too. 

With the mob psycho comic I did, the detailing that wasnt line was done using a variety of halftones of different shapes layered on top of each other

by contrast parts of my ace attorney comic use a textured brush and have a sort of blended, papery feel

any of them can work for pretty much anything as long as you are using it with intent. practice around. mix styles of finishing together. find a comfort zone. the more you do it the more intuitive it becomes and at the heart of it this process is a very intuitive way of drawing because of how far removed it is from realism.

Now here is the trick - light and shadow.

Everything up to this point has been very flat and adding detail helps but there’s only so much that can accomplish. To get HEAVY light and shadow you need to think about things differently. I think if there’s any part of this process that’s complicated, its this one. 

To truly get the most out of your palette, you need to pick chunks of an image to be in higher/lower light and then either ‘step up’ or ‘step down’ the colors in that chunk. here’s what I mean.

Here’s our ball with a beam of light on it. Everything Within the beam of light is one step in our limited palette lighter than anything outside of it. Here’s how I go about doing this: the shape of the beam of light is below everything else. Then, once I have the shape blocked out, i select it. With that selection in place, i go to EVERY SINGLE LAYER that’s effected, lock the opacity, and recolor that chunk. So what’s going on here is that there is only one more layer - the beam of light, below everything but the background, and the rest of this effect is just caused by every layer above it now being two-toned following the exact same silhouette. THIS is why it’s so important to keep your layers separate - if the shadow and highlight had been painted onto the base directly, i would not be able to do this without significant effort. 

This works with all of the finishing techniques I talked about above

A combination of cel shading and half toning, all stepped up to give the appearance of heavier light on one area.This is also how I go about rendering transparency in this style. All of my layers are fully opaque and I allow the colors to do the work of conveying transparent material

Here’s our ball with the patterned/textured brush  shading, being viewed partially through a window

it’s obviously not a very representational way of working, but as long as your audience UNDERSTANDS what you’re trying to convey, then you’re executing it successfully.

So with that, now we’re gonna go and finish this drawing.

For this one, I decide a big central shadow is necessary. In the original thumbnail, he was backlit, which I still plan on doing, and that wouldn’t make sense without casting a shadow.

I’ve had to change the colors of some objects entirely in order to get this to work right. This is what I mean when I call this an intuitive process - some stuff felt weird, so I changed it. This also involves a bit of problem solving. The newspaper is now unable to be separated from his hand. Sometimes changing the color of an object makes that object look better, but ruins its relationship with the objects around it. It’s up to you to learn how to adjust and finagle things until you get it where you want.The paper he has and the napkin underneath it also all blend together now.

The next few parts of this process are REALLY just trial and error, where I toss a bunch of spaghetti at it until it works. It’s hard to decide what to screenshot, because I don’t know what will or will not be part of the finished drawing. To that end, you can watch the recording of this drawing here. This video isn’t edited at all so it contains a couple of minutes of really shitty sketching, and then all of the color thumbnailing work i did in the last post. Actually getting started on these final colors begins around the two minute mark. It is also sideways, I am sorry I don’t know why. 

Now, here you can see where I’ve more or less worked things out. His hand’s not on the cup anymore because my friend pointed out it didnt have an arm attached to it. I added some halftoning to make a gradiating effect in the sky and on the table to give the impression of a sunrise. His eyes are different but as of posting this, I don’t like them and am probably about to go back and change them again. The Cup now has a shadow and some rim lighting. His hand is in shadow. The stain on the napkin is big enough to define the edge of the paper on top of it.

Little things like that. 

The more you draw like this the more the way you need to think about your space becomes natural. I hope this helps and I wish you all the best of luck!

tips from a broke artist

I know there's dozens posts like this but I'm just thinkin about stuff i wish i knew when i started so

Paper:

Depends on what media you're using! Sketch paper is fine for dry media like charcoal/chalk/pencil/pen.

If you do washes or heavy ink or watercolor, get mixed-media or watercolor paper

Alcohol-based markers will usually bleed if you use them on sketch paper or watercolor paper, try looking for smooth/untextured marker paper if you wanna avoid that

If you need watercolor board, buy a sketchbook full of it! This always always a good deal, and you can usually find paper thick enough to even use gouache and acrylics on

If you're using thick/mixed media paper, usually one side is more textured and one isn't. Took me a while to figure that out lol.

Theres a difference between hot press paper and cold press. I think cold press tends to have a smoother texture, it could make a world of a difference depending on your feelings about texture!

The weight of the paper tells you how thick it is, which tells you how well it will hold its shape when wet/painted on! I try to get at LEAST 120 lb. for my own watercolor paintings, its thick enough for guoache and thinner acrylics too!

If you have REALLY heavy paper that still buckles/doesnt hold its shape when painted on, try taping it down! It's tedious but it makes it a lot easier in the long run

Some people even do a plain water-wash on the back of the paper, and then blow dry it flat, that also helps with buckling. Just make sure you do this BEFORE you paint the other side and let it fully dry fully flat

Ink:

Copics! Do yourself a favor and don't worry about buying name brand! There are plenty of smaller online brands selling them in bulk instead of 2-3 USD per marker

If you are buying name brand, like prismacolor or windsor newton, make sure you at least get the refill cartridges. **But seriously if youre not doing like, huge poster sized stuff youre probably not gonna need to buy name brand or worry about refills!

Cheap waterbased markers like crayola are great for thinning down with water for ink washes! A lot of times you get brighter colors than actual watercolor paint

India ink, like acrylic paint, can be diluted with water for washes AND are both waterproof when dry! This is why india ink is great for inking watercolor pieces with

Canvas:

you absolutely dont need big expensive glossy canvases if youre using acrylics. there are a TON of dollar stores that sell like, four canvases for a dollar, in varying sizes. look around and see what kind of deals you can get, dont get suckered out of like $5 for one 8*10 canvas

If youre using watercolors on canvas you might want to gesso it first, you might not. gesso just helps it hold the paint more like paper would and dry faster! canvas is definitely more expensive than watercolor board though

everyone says you NEED to start out with the biggest canvases possible so you get used to it: don't! if you have problems with starting projects a huge empty space is hard to approach. Its better to have a bunch of smaller pieces DONE than just never starting a big one bc youre intimidated!

that being said, dont limit yourself to just one size either! do mini pieces, square pieces, round pieces, hexagons whatever!! feel free to experiment with the shape of the space you fill go crazy aaa go stupid

Brushes:

If youre not using your brushes for inking, probably any type of brushes will work, like canvas you can find packs of varied size brushes for a good price

If you ARE using them for inking, you might want to spring for any type of natural-fiber brushes. Natural fibers just tend to hold ink better, which makes for longer lines so you dont have to break them/dip as often

If you use brush pens, like any other type of markers, they dont work as well on textured paper and might bleed

If you use water brush pens, those are great for watercolors but if you use them to water down acrylic paint youll have to clean them more often as acrylic paint dries waterproof and is more difficult to wash out

If you do full wet-on-wet washes, id recommend getting a small house paintbrush, its clunky but much easier to wet the entire paper with

im sorry i haven't answered this!!! i got some new stuff to add to my routine and i wanted to actually use it before i told ppl it was good or not!

but i GOT U OK my skin is super dry too, even when i was using a heavy moisturizer in the morning (usually around 5-6 am) i would be super super dry and flaky by my work break which is usually around 11!

***this is if i’m not wearing makeup! if i am, the makeup remover cleaners i use are Lush’s 9-5 cleansing balm, or if i’m feeling especially dry/during the winter, i use Lush’s Ultrabland, bc its a little more oil based and moisturizing! after these, the routine is the same!***

1. Lush’s Kalamazoo Cleanser: so this is pretty much the only face wash ive used this long and genuinely think has benefitted my skin! its actually a beard cleanser, but you can use it as a normal face wash too, and its exfoliating bc of the pineapple juice, it doesnt have any texture or beads or anything, so it’s pretty gentle!

2: The Ordinary Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1%: this one im not going to outright recommend yet, ive only used it for a couple days, but its supposed to help w blemishes and breakouts! i dont have acne prone skin, but i am disabled + have chronic fatigue, so sometimes it’s hard for me to do all of this consistently (and by all of this i mean literally any of it tbh) and i tend to get a bit of acne in my T zone when i dont for a bit!

3. The Ordinary Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5: this brand is SO amazing and SO affordable!! this is a thin water-based formula, so i use it first! it makes my skin super soft, and i’ve been using it for about a week and have nothing bad to say about it! the very first time i sued this, i could immediately feel how soft and smooth my skin was after i finished my routine, it was shocking (i did in fact make my gf pet my face afterwards)

4: The Ordinary 100% Plant-Derived Squalane: ok remember everything i said about how soft my face was after using step 3? multiply that times 20 and you’ve got this product. it’s an oil based formula, so it’s the last serum-like thing i use, and it is honestly unbelievable, like i said these products are so affordable to begin with, this one is roughly $7 i think? and you only use a few drops, so they last a long time!!!! this one helps w maintaining surface hydration without clogging ur pores n all that, and i absolutely love it even though i’ve only been using it since monday! so much so that when my cat spilled the majority of my bottle, i immediately went out today after work and bought another!

5: Lush’s Celestial Moisturizer: ok this one im not gonna say absolutely 100% go get this. it’s really nice, soaks in well, but is VERY expensive. i got a small sample size in a set from Lush, and ive been using it very very sparingly in only the dries parts of my face, but i wanted to mention it nonetheless. 

6: The Ordinary Natural Moisturizing Factors + HA: ok THIS. MOISTURIZER. again, super affordable, about $7 for a decent sized tube, about the size of a face wash tube, and it is AMAZING. it keeps my skin so soft and so moisturized, no more being dry again after 4 hours! its a little heavy, but to be fair i do use a good amount, and it soaks in pretty quickly, probably about 10 minutes or so? and it doesnt make u feel greasy or clog ur pores!!!

so thats it for my daily stuff, but i do use one more product. 

so i have pretty dry skin, but it also gets kinda dull and textured weirdly? like foundation doesnt rly sit right on my forehead and stuff, and one a week or so ive been using The Ordinary AHA 30% + BHA 2% Peeling Solution, which is a mild, at-home chemical peel type situation? it went semi viral on tiktok awhile back, its like a blood red color haha. it doesnt feel great, bc its acid, but it kinda feels like when u get hair bleach on ur skin for a minute or so and then it stops, and it just helps my skin look brighter, and also fades acne scars (which is great, bc i have a skin picking issue so i make things worse than they should be) but if u have sensitive skin this is probably a no-go
