when the show started you were sure you would get evil edited. you weren’t any type of asian and so you stuck out like a sour thumb. so you thought your best hope was to just be the best all-rounder ever. that before you found out you were the youngest on the show. being fourteen.

after you danced to ‘im jelly baby’ by aoa cream the judges cooed. you titled you head and one of the laughed.

“ahh what’s wrong?”

“did I do bad..?”. you heard oohs and aahs.

“no no you just looked really cute”. you still looked worried prompting chanelle to translate to you. you nodded.

“I would hope I’m only fourteen”. you heard a loud gasp and when you turned to the judges there eyes were wide. as you went to sit down you were being pulled in all sorts of directions. you sat down next to chanelle and moka though since you were going to need the translating help. as you sat down moka pinched your cheek.

“your going to be what..? fifteen when you debut?”. you nodded as your legs rocked back and forth. in the episode subtitles immediately appeared.

as people went on you yawned and slowly dozed of. ‘ahh look..!’ ‘so cute..!’. moka put her hand around your waist for the rest of the auditions and as you woke up towards the end suddenly the cameras were back on you.

as you watched the first episode in your dorm you smiled. you felt eyes on you and looked up to see a blushing iroha.

“you’re a great singer !”

“I loved your dance”. iroha beamed at you as she sat next to you on your bed.

“us maknaes have to stick together”. you laughed as the girl shock your hand. that night you had your own little sleepover without the rest of the girls knowing.

“chanelle?”. chanelle brushing her teeth tilted her head at yunah.

“hmm?”

“do you know where iroha is..? she’s my dorm mate..”. the girl shock her head prompting yunah to run into each dorm asking for iroha.

“I- aww..”. as yunah walked into yours and youngseo’s dorm she saw youngseo shushing her and you two cuddled together on the queen bed. the next morning you got ready for your first perfomance. you fell into a group with wonhee and were scared you wouldn’t be able to connect with anyone because of the language barrier.

as practice went on you always felt wonhee’s eyes in you, as you all sat down she ran over to you.

“are you having fun”. you only nodded.

“do you think you need any help?”. you nodded and wonhee urged you to show her. in the end product of episode two you got a lot of screen time because of the girl and yours interactions. as you performed you made a slight mistake. you slipped and then just decided to fuck it and go into a middle spilt.

the judges nodded along and the girls oohed. as you lined up your head was down.

“y/n-ah are you ok..?”. you shakes your head.

“I messed up in the middle I’m sorry”. you bowed and yunah rubbed your back as chanelle held your hand. the judge gasped.

“the spilt wasn’t in the choero”. you nodded and she clapped.

“it was good don’t worry”. you smiled as you sat down and yunah made sure everything was fine. as you sat in the locker room you tapped your feet waiting for someone to enter. when minju did you smiled. you loved her voice. minju gasped as your ran up and hugged her. you heard a scuff in the background.

“so I get no hug..”. you laughed as you ran to hug youngseo too. you tried to hold in your tears as the members got announced.

and your third member…

you crossed your fingers and closed your eyes shut.

you gasped as chanelle hugged you. you were stunned leading chanelle to walk you over and give you one last big hug. iroha side hugged you as minju ruffled your hair. the other two members were announced and as the cameras turned of you were happy to meet your new family..

(1) i started out watching only tbz performances- i don’t stan anyone else aside from listening to a bit of pentagon but i was told to watch golcha and i did and thought they were amazing! i didn’t like onf’s everybody stage at all, nor do i like the original song either but i don’t get the same vibe as the shinee ver and it just felt... forced?

putting our convo undercut since it’ll get long!

(2) and pentagon are pushing the rough bad boy image but they’re so good at the cuter concept!! shine and naughty boy are their most popular songs for a reason... they own that concept! i wish they did it more and i enjoyed seeing them own the cuter side in their shine&spring snow performance.

(3/3) the boyz are so deserving of their wins, not even from a stan point of view, but it’s so clear- their performances have been on a different level to the rest and no hate to the other groups for that, i just think tbz really do know and play on their strengths rather than trying a concept that’s just not them

1. i knew each of the groups (except too - i mean if you count me knowing woonggi then i knew them all) and a couple songs from each! for golcha i did know them predebut when people were wondering what woollim trainees were going to debut in infinite’s brother group! and so i mean...imo infinite are one of the best of their gen of groups and they basically invented knife-like dance and i was really anticipating their (golcha) stages since they have such respectable and talented seniors! 

i mean imo from what we’ve seen.. no one even comes close to tbz’s level of performance, vocals and visuals but golcha were definitely the second best out of all the groups in that show! their concepts were refreshing and they were definitely my second favorite for all rounds of the show! (also wannabe orchestra version was stunning to see!!!! joochan’s violin performance was 10/10 and it broke my heart to see him think that it was his fault the boys were eliminated 😓)

although everybody isn’t shinee’s best song.. it’s still Iconic because it’s shinee! but they took the shinee color out of their stage and just made the whole thing weird? same with verivery’s mansae stage ... wtf was up with that sailor concept ??? 

2. exactly! idk how long you’ve liked kpop but yknow how sistar were known as the queens of summer? they could become the kings of summer if they just stuck to the cute concepts 😔shine and pretty pretty were my fave concepts they did and with dr bebe it just seemed like they tried to do a dark concept like vixx or bap but fell short (the song is still good don’t get me wrong!)

3. yes i agree! and for having so many members they really utilize each the best way possible! like in reveal (catching fire) stage they gave members like solo sections with dancers and everything and it looked so amazing! (i esp liked chanhee’s part!) i just think when they commit to a song they really make that song theirs. it’s like they make it a part of them!

My two cents on the whole AOA situation.

This is going to be long, I’m sorry.

I’ve seen lots of people sharing their thoughts and opinions on this matter so I thought I would do the same...I think I actually needed to do this.

I, for the time being, cannot listen to their songs, I don’t want to...and yeah it kind of hurts, I know I’ll be able to later and i think I will still like the songs because they are good.

I was so interested in AOA even before their debut, I saw all the teasers, and I’ve kept track of them as a fan since then, they even were my favourite group for a while.

Learning that this whole situation began ten years ago was heartbreaking because it was even when they were trainees and nobody knew them, they still chose to debut like that (all of them). It really shows how the mindset of any person who wishes to debut can be, and gives a new light into how devious and dark the kpop world can, sometimes, be.

In any situation, bullying is horrible and we should not stand by it. But us regular people have it easier. That’s why I think that taking care of yourself and your dreams or goals by not participating is valid and, specially in the kpop industry, is probably more common that we think. Even outside, I cannot judge people who don’t intervene or defend other because, while I’ve had the chance to help others being bullied and even stopped it, I’ve also lived situations where helping was not an option and even where I chose not to. I think it’s part of society and human nature to have this duality and it’s even more intelligent to think how can you help the victim, instead of attacking the bully.

On the other side,bullying (in early stages) takes two roles (bully and victim) Most people get to choose who they are and wether they are going to let it happen or not, whatever you choose, you should accept the consequences. 

I’ve been picked on (never physically fortunately) for different resons since my childhood, sometimes I defended myself, sometimes I didn’t, sometimes I chose to ignore and sometimes I chose to respond. Some memories hurt still, but I’m ok, I was back then and now I can see how processing them made me stronger now. That is not the case for lots of people.

That being said, and sorry for rambling, I’m really glad Mina spoke about it, she needed to release it, I do believe everything she said and I actually find it not surprising 8which is even more heartbreaking). However I definitely don’t think it was the right, clean way to do or even healthy for her. 

I think this bullying situation should be solved between Mina, Jimin and the real professional authorities (doctors, lawyers, police) even mabye the company since they let the situation happen (which is sad how not surpising it is). If Jimin bullied anybody else, then it’s a problem between them specifically.

Just a few days back she posted a picture of her wound, made believe that it had just happened and then cleared out that it was from months back, was it necessary? To me, that post and what she said in it didn’t help her situation, not did it affect Jimin anymore...Honestly I don’t blame her for doing that but then again, to some, she ends up looking unstable and chaotic, and with the experiences she lived she probably is.

As for us (the fans) and regular people and netizens and whoever followed her shouldn’t  have a say in the matter, we weren’t there and we’ll never be...we really don’t know.  I honestly think we should limit ourselves to support Mina or whoever you want to support or believe without involving the other parties and doing justice for them, we’re not saviors nor we should try to be. We are fans, our job, if we even have one, is to support and thats all.

Something that really makes me mad is that I’ve seen videos incriminating others and clickbaiting to sound dramating...I know that’s how it works and thats why I hate it, it really makes us biased and suddenly we’ve lost the ability to think and reason, we’ve become sheep to a title,a perspective and even more so the person that wrote it.

There’s a reality but the perspective depends on the person who is living it, they are ALL VALID so...

As for Jimin...I’m glad she left, it was the healthiest option for her. I don’t see her promoting ever again and maybe it’s for the best, an example for others to think better before bullying.

I just cant empathize with bullying in general, but even more so with someone who shares your goals, dreams, and is even an important part of the team that was given to you in order to achieve success.  I don’t understand what made her do something like that, specially as the leader of the group and a person who is talented, why waste all of yourself on something that is so obviously wrong.

I still don’t think she is a monster who needs to be vanished from existence though so I hope she reflects a lot, gets the treatment she needs, pays her due and comes out a better person, for her and the people that will surround her in the future.

As for the other members... IMO they are not the same or worse that a bully.

They made decisions that now have consequences but I don’t think badly of any of them, I hope they continue to be great, grow up as a person, can be happy and succeed in whatever they choose to do from now on. I completely disagree when people say that they are worse for not helping...we don’t get to choose how someone should have acted, we don’r know how the other members lived the situation.

Mina. I hope she feels liberated and better, I’m gald she is now receiving treatment and I hope she never has to experience something like that again and maybe uses her experience to help others and become a better person herself. I believe her, but no more than limit myself to believe that that is how SHE lived and felt it, it’s her truth and it’s valid. I hope she gains strength to defend herself better in any situation needed and get the happy life she deserves.

I’m now glad Choa and Youkyoung left when they did, let’s remember they knew about this cause of the time frame, but they left. If they were bullied, just unconfortable, had their dreams change, tired, left out, wanted to or they chose to leave as we “officially know” thats what they chose and it was the best option for them, I applaud them and hope they are happier and successful now. IMO, to end bullying sometimes it’s better to remove yourself from the situation before trying to change the bully. Maybe unfair, yes; but I think it’s healthier, brave, strong and maybe even mature as (I believe), you get to take the bully’s streght from them while you can get better and use it to do something else, or the same somewhere else.

Mina said that Seolhyun never once joined Jimin in the bullying, she didn't stop her and was a bystander for that, while still (generally) wrong I think she chose that to be safe, and in that industry I can't blame her for that. I actually think it’s possible that Seolhyun chose to be Jimin’s friend to avoid that scenario with her, or maybe she saw another side of her, she knows her truth and will grow from this scenario. I wish only good thing for her too.

As for Chanmi, she’s always been my favourite. Mina said that she did nothing even when she herself was being scolded cause she's/ was too young and she’s also believed to have been bullied as well, I believe this as well and it was her defense mechanisim, not only Jimin but probably the managers, antis and company staff. She worked hard and will definetly grow from this, I hope she succeeds and gets to be happy and safe.

Yuna is, not surprisingly either, probably the member who is been talked about the least, Mina said she cherised her well but was to afraid to act which makes sense. I don’t see Yuna as a problematic person and I hope she succeeds, gains strength and confidence to become better, as well as the others.

Lastly, it was said by Mina that only Hyejeong said something to Jimin sometimes and that all the others were either too afraid or not participating at all. I really admire Hyejeong for that and hope she continues being strong and making her dreams and goals come true.

Them I like, I still do. I know I say not to judge but I can’t dislike them not even blame them. With that little information I have on the matter and the context of behind the scenes of kpop I’ve learned, I understand why everyone acted the way they did.

The real truth, only the girls know (each their own) and it should be something they (all of them) sort out with professionals, individually and between themselves.

I wish they were taken care of better, that they were treated better so that this never had to happen. This I blame on the peson that chose and for some reason needed to bully her members but MORE IMPORTANTLY I blame it on the companies who treat their trainees and artists badly or just see the money they can get. They forget (and sometimes we followers do too) that they are people, humans chasing their dreams and sacrificing a lot to do it, even their lifes.

The kpop world is awesome sometimes but it can really suck and be so toxic.

Thinking about this, most groups, probably, have cases like this, I think real friendships in groups are rare TBH and thats fine, they are a team, coleagues and that´s all that matters...If they happen to become friends all the better, but thats not necessary to me anymore. 

Today I choose to believe that for every group I follow. And really, I choose to just limit myself to support and enjoy their personas (as in who they are on screen) from afar. What happens behind is only theirs to bare.

Being in the same company as the one, who rejected your feelings was relatively awkward.

You would constantly run into each other in the halls, shoot each other uneasy looks, smile briefly before hastily coming up with an excuse to leave.

No biggie, right? It was something many had to go through, whether they were students in the same class or random strangers, who lived close to each other, crossing paths every now and then. Who had become friends and got closer and closer until one of them caught feelings, confessed and they drifted further and further apart after the ultimate, most dreaded response.

Those encounters would be uncomfortable at most.

But being in the same company as the one, who rejected your feelings and being close-knit friends with his group since trainee days…made this all ten thousand times harder.

You watched from across the dance room as the boys of Sf9 and the girls in your group were scattered around, munching on the take out your managers had brought over. You watched him chuckle at something Rowoon was showing him on his phone, his usually solemn expression brightening with that one cheerful emotion. You couldn’t tell when it started making your heart race but now you couldn’t tell whether you would ever be able to stop feeling like this.

His eyes suddenly met yours despite the distance and you almost dropped your chopsticks in your hand at the rush of emotions that coursed through your veins, the butterflies flying amok in your stomach.

“You what?” he breathed out, almost whispering.

“I…I like you,” you said, slowly starting to regret your outburst upon seeing his petrified expression.

“…Oh,” was all he said and that’s when your heart dropped. Whatever Mina or Youngbin or Inseong had seen…it was false. Because he was sure as hell not looking at you the way you were looking at him.

“Listen Y/N,” Chani started, swallowing nervously, “I-I’m really sorry, I don’t...”

“No, no. I get it,” you said quickly, biting your lip harshly. Right now, you just wanted to get away as fast as possible, “It’s all good...um, I think I forgot to buy something. You can go ahead.”

He nodded slowly, quickly accepting your lame excuse and you could see him sigh slightly in relief. “Yeah...alright. See you then.”

You turned around without answering, scrunching your eyes shut at the burning feeling of rejection in your chest.

He quickly snapped his head back down, his dark brown eyes flicking around and you felt your chest clench painfully. That was probably the first eye contact you two shared after two weeks when you parted ways that day.

These encounters weren’t uncomfortable at most. They were hella awkward.

“I’m sorry, Y/N,” Mina had said after you retold what had happened with your head buried in your pillow. “I really thought he likes you. We all did.”

“Well, you were wrong,” you sighed, “And now it’s going to be so embarrassing to see him.”

“Hey now. This will all blow over in a few weeks and you will get over it and find your ultimate soulmate,” Yuna tried to console you from your other side, rubbing your back, “You just need some time.”

“Yeah, I guess...,” you replied, sniffling slightly.

“Aigoo, don’t cry now, sweetie,” your unnies cooed, squishing you between their arms, “A boy is not worth your tears.”

“I know. I will just have to avoid him until then,” you muttered, snuggling deeper into the comforts of your bed as if it could swallow you and your embarrassment.

“It’s gonna be alright, don’t worry too much.” Easy to say, but you couldn’t help but cringe every single time you bumped into him or even his members. At first, you thought he would tell them all what had occurred that day and you were mentally preparing yourself for their pitiful stares or teasing - mainly from Dawon - but nothing of that sort happened. He hadn’t told anyone for your sake and you were grateful for that for the most part even though it just made you crush even harder on him. However, they did stop trying to push you two together, scared shitless of his death glares. You were glad about that as well, you couldn’t imagine being anywhere alone with him again.

If you did happen to end up in the vicinity of the other the atmosphere would turn tense up to borderline unbearable and you couldn’t do anything about it. Each time you saw him you got reminded of that god awful moment of rejection as if it had just freshly happened. And it was like he remembered too because he would always robotically greet you and then clam up…well, clam up more than usual. It was no wonder no one else realized, he was a naturally quiet person, but you being hyperaware of his every move due to your stupid feelings just had to notice those slight changes.

At first at least. After a week he simply started to ignore your presence, seeing that this was the easiest approach to this particular situation. You felt hurt when he would brush off your greetings with a silent nod, not even turning his head in your direction, or when he would always turn his back on you when you were approaching but you figured it was a good way to get rid of your feelings.

You were walking down the hallway where all the practice rooms were located, having finished your rapping lessons for the day. Glancing down at your watch, you sighed as you read 11PM. You should be used to it by now, but you felt exhausted when you thought back on how you woke up at 6AM. And how you were going to have to wake up at that time again tomorrow. You heard roars of laughter ahead and looked up to see some of the boys standing in the middle of the hallway with your unnies from AOA.

Of course, your eyes immediately zoomed in on Chani’s figure, your heart leaping awake after having slept the entire day deprived of his existence near you and you cursed it for betraying you. ‘We’re over him, remember that!’ you scolded yourself, slowing down as you contemplated whether there was another route for you to get out from. As you kept thinking you kept observing their interaction, noticing how Chani stared at his noona’s, hanging onto their every word and smiling down shyly ever time he made eye contact with them. The burning ache that had dulled down over time resurfaced and you involuntarily scrunched your face at the pain. You should be used to it by now.

Seolhyun pinched his cheek, giving some kind of compliment that you couldn’t quite make out but your eyes were sharp enough to detect the blush on his cheeks and the tiniest tilt of his lips as they turned up. Fortunately or unfortunately, Hwiyoung got aware of your presence.

“Yah, Y/N-ah!” he called you over cheerily and you plastered up a fake smile, approaching them. Your heart sank when you noticed Chani’s lips turn down into the frown as he caught sight of you before he turned his head away in indifference.

“Hey peeps,” you greeted them, bowing slightly to your unnies.

“Yah, haven’t we told you not to do that?” Seolhyun complained playfully, “It makes us feel old.”

“Well, you kinda are,” you responded cheekily to which she slapped your arm as the boys and you laughed (minus Chani). “Rude!”

“At least you don’t look older than you are,” Hwiyoung grumbled and you giggled at his sour expression. People always assumed he was 25-something because of his features when in reality he had just turned 19. You locked your arm through his, pulling him to you. “Don’t worry, Hwiyoungie. We all know what a baby you are.”

“A baby?? Just because you are a few months older!”

“Half a year, hellooo?”

“And you act more like a baby then I do!”

“Oh really? When did I ever act like one, hm?”

“Remember that time in the haunted house?”

“You were the one, who screamed like a dolphin!”

“No, that was you!”

“We both know I can’t hit high notes like that. Didn’t we have a competition a few months ago?”

“…that was still you in the haunted house…”

“Yeah, sure. Keep telling yourself that.”

The others were in tears at this point except for Chani, who for some reason seemed rather annoyed. “They’re fighting over who’s a baby when they both act like one,” he said dryly, 'tch'ing and you immediately shut up.

“Yah, our maknae is so rude. We gotta teach him a lesson,” Taeyang, who had been laughing his head off, spoke up now, putting his dongsaeng in a headlock. You watched the two wrestling quietly as you fiddled with Hwiyoung’s sleeve.

“Why are you suddenly so quiet?” he inquired, moving his head closer to talk quietly as if he knew you didn’t want others to hear. You smiled at him gratefully, being reminded once again why he was your best friend.

“It’s nothing. I just realized how tired I am.”

“Sure. And I don’t look like 25,” he sassed and you had to chuckle at that.

“You can’t really blame people when they hear you talk with your deep ass voice,” you commented and he cleared his throat, attempting a higher pitch.

“How about now?” he asked, his voice close to a dolphin and you giggled.

“Way better,” you encouraged with a faux thumbs up and he just grinned.

“I know you are not serious but at least you are laughing,” he said and you laid your head on his shoulder, touched by his sweet and simple nature. He would always try to cheer you up no matter if he knew why you were upset or not. “Thanks, Hwiyoungie,” you said quietly, yawning to yourself.

“Let’s head home, shall we?” Hwiyoung suggested and the others nodded, Taeyang and Chani finishing their playfight. You startled when you saw he had his eyes on you and didn’t even look away when yours connected with his this time. An unreadable expression was set on his face and his brown orbs flickered slightly between you and Hwiyoung before he turned away like usual, leaving you in the shadow of his attention. The AOA unnies parted ways with you, each of them having their own apartments unlike you after so many years of debuting. You knew when you reached their level, you and your members would get their own places as well as a reward and you already felt excited about it.

“I wonder if we can choose where to live,” you spoke out loud as you headed to the complex with the Sf9’s maknae line.

“I’m sure we can tell our preferences as long as it’s reasonable,” Taeyang voiced out his thoughts from the other side of Hwiyoung. You still had your arm locked around his with your head on his shoulder, putting dead weight on him in your tiredness. And you kind of wanted to assess Chani’s weird behavior and whether it would happen again or not. So far, he showed no signs but his face was still set in that unreadable expression as he looked off in the distance.

“So, no Gangnam for us,” Hwiyoung said and you pouted.

“But they have the best restaurants there,” you whined slightly.

“Just take a flat nearby,” Taeyang suggested.

“Or maybe I will just share a flat,” you mused, “Will you share with me, Hwiyoung?”

“Pff as if,” Chani scoffed, speaking up all of a sudden, “You really think anyone wants to share a flat after years of being stuck in a dorm with each other?”

“I wasn’t stuck in a dorm with Hwiyoungie,” you mumbled half-heartedly, feeling like a kicked puppy. Why was he being like this? You didn't ask for his opinion, yet he insisted on hurting you anyways.

Taeyang noticed your disheartenment and slapped his dongsaeng on the back of his head. “Aish, you are so harsh sometimes.”

“Wae? I was just telling the truth,” he complained, rubbing the sore spot, “I can’t wait to move out of that dorm. You guys are too messy.”

“Says the one, who leaves everything around,” Hwiyoung shot.

“Says the one, who is so cheap he won’t even share his shampoo,” Chani shot back, causing the other to scoff.

“What does that have to do with you being messy?”

“Nothing, but I wanted to point that out,” he said with a shrug, glancing at you, “You don’t want to live with a cheap guy, do you? Y/N?”

“At least he is not uselessly throwing his money away,” you pondered out loud with a shrug and he looked away with his lips pressed together.

“See? I’m amazing,” Hwiyoung complimented himself, puffing his chest.

“Now, I never said that- oof,” you whined as he elbowed you lightly, “That hurt!”

“Serves you right. We gotta be on the same side if we move in together.”

Your eyes lit up. “Does that mean you would?”

“Sure thing. I don’t like living alone,” he said with a shrug and you cheered, jumping a bit.

“You mean you are too scared to live alone,” Chani grumbled with Taeyang snickering in agreement.

“Am not!”

“You are!”

“You kinda really are,” you admitted, grinning cheekily at your best friend, who glared at you in betrayal.

“That’s it! I’m going to look for someone else to live with!” he declared, going ahead and you gasped dramatically, playing along. “No, Hwiyoung-nim. Please do not deprive me of your presence!”

“Too late! This man is gone!”

“Too bad. Anyone else wanna move in with me?” you asked, turning to the other two with a nonchalant shrug. You grinned when you heard a dramatic gasp from behind you.

“How dare you give up on me so easily?” your best friend exclaimed and promptly picking you up and running the rest of the way to the apartment, yelling like Tarzan. You tried to shout over him but your laughter wouldn’t let you, “Hwiyoung! Let me down!”

“Never! I’m not losing my flatmate to them losers!”

“WHaT?!” Taeyang and Chani yelled from behind.

“Nothing!”

Times like these were the greatest. They reminded you of why you were doing this, how you managed to keep going after so many hardships. Without the mental support of the others, without the teamwork and cheering ups at your downs, you didn’t think you would have come anywhere close to reaching your goals. Of course, you need a certain amount of hard work and talent to become an idol, but 50% of the chances also depended on luck. And you were damn lucky for your unnies and Sf9.

But when you glanced back towards the youngest of the boy group your happiness dimmed and you saw his smile falter slightly as well when he met your eyes. You were glad that he didn’t tell anyone about your confession but you also regretted trying in the first place. Now you felt like you took a bit of that luck away because, despite these beautiful times, you would always remember that awkward moment between you.

Even now, when Hwiyoung placed you down right in front of his younger to ring the doorbell, you both stiffened in surprise at the sudden proximity and shuffled away from each other, you bumping slightly into your best friend’s back.

You thought that time that you would never be able to get over him. Until you overheard a very interesting conversation between him and his hyungs one late evening.

The girls and boys had been spending the late afternoon together, your elders joyfully drinking whilst you weren’t allowed to yet (officially). Today they were intent on not letting you drink a single drop despite the fact that you needed it now more than ever after being seated right next to Chani.

It was safe to say that your tensed posture didn’t relax over the entire evening and you finally sagged in relief when you waved goodbye to the boys and went towards the elevator to get up to your dorm.

“Damn, where is my phone?” you muttered to yourself when you had tried to reach for it in your pocket only to come up empty-handed.

“Maybe it slipped out at the boy’s place,” Mina pondered and you guessed she was right, stopping the elevator before the doors fully closed.  “Be right back, you go on,” you yelled over your back, already jogging back towards the boy’s dorm. You would have knocked and maybe avoided listening in on their conversation but knowing them, they forgot to lock the door again and simply turned the handle. ‘They’re such easy targets for thievery,’ you thought to yourself as you silently walked in, thinking of a way to scare them.

“What’s the matter between you and Y/N lately?” you froze as you heard Dawon say your name, wondering why they were talking about you.

Your heart skipped a beat when Chani answered, “What do you mean?” They were asking him about you?

“Well, things are weird-ish between you. Like all awkward and tense.”

“Yeah, before that she would at least be friendly to you,” Rowoon agreed, “Did you finally confess and she rejected you?” The others laughed out loud as you raised your eyebrows. That’s what they were thinking? That Chani was the one with the unrequited feelings?

You chuckled soundlessly to yourself. If only they knew.

“No, hell no!” Chani immediately declined, “I never confessed to her.”

“But you do you like her?”

“No! Jeez, you guys. I thought you let it go.”

“Nope, never.”

“We are drunk now, your scary glares are not scary to us anymore.”

You heard Chani sigh loudly, “For the thousands time. I don’t feel a single thing for her.”

“Hmm, what do you think, Jae?” Dawon said thoughtfully. “Isn’t our little Chani behaving strangely lately?”

“Totally,” Jaeyoon answered in that same thoughtful tone, “And he is being more defensive than usual. I bet he confessed and got rejected.”

The others ‘Ooh’ed loudly as if hit by the revelation and you rolled your eyes, wishing they would let it go. You felt warm at the fact that Chani was basically protecting you from humiliation by not saying anything, but you also wondered how long he would be able to take this teasing.

“I did not!” he protested. “Stop it already.”

“Oh you did not, you say?”

“But something must have happened for little Y/N to be so cold towards little Chani nowadays.”

“Who says she is being cold to me?”

“Puh-lease,” Jaeyoon scoffed, “We can tell. I bet if you confessed to her now, she would definitely reject you.”

“Yeah,” Inseong laughed, jumping into the conversation for the first time, “Before that you might have had the slightest chance, but now…”

“What the hell?” Chani cursed and you could tell he was getting frustrated, “Of course she would accept my confession.”

Would you? Yeah, you would, definitely.

“Oh, you are that sure?”

“Yes.”

“Well, do it then,” Dawon dared, causing your heartbeat to stop.

“W-what?”

“Confess to her and if you don’t get rejected you have one wish from each of us.”

“WhAt?!”

"NO!"

"Why all of us?!" the others immediately complained, speaking over one another. Now you knew Dawon was drunk and out of his mind (more than usual) and you were happy to see the others had still kept their sanity in check.

“And if you do get rejected,” Dawon spoke out loudly, “Each of us has a wish on you!” Your jaw dropped when the complaints immediately turned into approving hums.

“You guys are crazy,” Chani said, thankfully not drunk, “But if I really get a wish from each of you…” Your jaw dropped.

“We have a deal!” Dawon cheered, drunkenly.

13. Your overall favorite concept?

That’s......really tough tbh. I typically like darker concepts, and I feel like a lot of different concepts can be subcategories of darker concepts.....for example, I love VIXX’s “Voodoo Doll” for the horror elements, plus the fact that they took such a chance with that concept (and honestly I love almost all of VIXX’s concepts). I love “Shoot Out” by Monsta X as well, so if you know both concepts, you can see the diversity within dark concepts. I guess that’s why I like darker concepts so much! Along with that, any concepts that have a deeper meaning/have MVs with storylines, like “Skydive” or “One Shot” by B.A.P, or “All in” or “Dramarama” by Monsta X

15. Your opinion on aegyo?

Personally, I love it. Honestly just seeing idols cringe while doing it is the best part..........like Hyungwon has an internal battle with himself every time he has to do it and screams and hits himself. Kibum literally runs out of a fucking studio cuz he doesn’t want to do it. But then there are those who are legends at aegyo, such as Jooheon. With Jooheon, I actually laugh and just.....love it so much. 

21. Your three favorite Kpop songs by male artists? 

Fuck......that’s hard lol. Anyone who knows me knows how much I love “Lost in the Dream” by MX......truly their best song. I really love “Ribbon in the Sky” by B.A.P as well. SHINee of course puts out high quality music as well, but I don’t think one song in particular sticks out to me as my favorite song from them. The best Kpop song ever in my opinion though is “The Chaser” by Infinite. Just.....listen to it if you ever get the chance.

22. Your three favorite Kpop songs by female artists?

Oooooof.........well “Décalcomanie” by Mamamoo is my favorite girl group song ever. And since I listened to these songs today, I’m listing three more that I’ve been into lately: “You and I” by Dreamcatcher, “Home” by Ailee, and “Eung Eung” by Apink. I have other songs like “Heart Attack” by AOA but I’ll end it here lol. I’m not sure which songs are among my favorites though besides “Décalcomanie.”

38. Your favorite inter-group moment?

Tbh I adore MonTeen interactions....Literally any moment where Monsta X and Seventeen interact I just get so happy because they’re so CLOSE. My most recent favorite story is when Monsta X got their first public broadcast win with “Shoot Out” and according to Minhyuk and/or Kihyun (forgot who sorry), Seventeen were on tour or somewhere else at the time and yet they called Monsta X and all 13 of them were like “CONGRATULATIONS!!” Plus, Carats and Monbebe being cute and sweet with each other just makes it all even better. But a little side note, when Hyuk and Hongbin from VIXX played Overwatch against Minhyuk, Kihyun, and Changkyun from MX......my heart was singing.

47. Your favorite makeup look?

Tbh I don’t really cling onto makeup looks, but the only thing I can think of is how unique and awesome SHINee’s makeup was for “Married to the Music.” I’ll post a picture of Onew as an example, but honestly I loved all of the members’ makeup looks:

I wrote a whole paragraph and deleted cuz I thought of one specific song with lyrics that I love: “One Shot” by B.A.P. Here is a verse that really resonates with me:

“Shake your head and say no to being a slave to laziness. All those who don’t try, wake up right now. You want a high position by just sitting in your room? This isn’t a game -- why can’t you separate it from reality?” 

Honestly I’d recommend looking at all the lyrics from that song just because it’s the most motivational Kpop song I’ve ever seen. Those lyrics are more of an “attack” I guess but the other lyrics are like “even if you fall every time, keep fighting” and things like that.

-success for wjsn: my girls got a win and their best-selling album yet so we’re on a roll now. but im somewhat worried because a lot of it comes from the new fame of c-line and between you and me i...dont think theyre ever coming back. prove me wrong yuehua.

-success for loona- is a debut mini selling over 50,000 copies success? ya know there are people that will say that based on how expensive and long their debut project was that everything was a flop and loona’s doomed but i dont really think that way. when lookin at it strictly as an actual debut they did great. i love my girls.

-success for clc- we’ll never know if anything could have come from a comeback after black dress because CUUUUUBBBBEEEEEE but im not salty or anything nooooo

-success for dreamcatcher: happyface and i think the girls themselves realize that their concept will never be mainstream but ya know what? my girls had a good year! they’re working hard and building a fanbase and theres nothing more i can ask for really

-same for gugudan this is depressing: i dont know how their last comeback did but it seems like they kind of staying the same which is sad because gugudan probably ranks the highest of post ioi groups in terms of raw talent and consistently good music. stan my girl nayoung.

alright out of approximately 30 wishes (i cant count) about half of them (i cant count) were at least partially fulfilled. this year was great for a lot of groups i like but not really for my 2nd gen and post-ioi faves. all of my absolute fave stuff came from groups that didnt even exist last year- fromis, idle, and izone.

what kind of student are you: I have always been a good student, but I talked a lot in class... but now that I think about it I had to teach myself everything because I couldn’t concentrate enough, but I was always an overachiever and the teacher’s favorite, but never the best student (I made a conscious effort to not be the best - second is always better than first as it’s be the second in command in any group, never the leader... you’re good enough to be heard but the attention is not on you... I can’t handle attention).... I was always the one to assemble the power points and group’s essays, because that way I would know that it would be done(I’m always freaking out so I couldn’t handle not know if the others weren’t doing their part or if it wasn’t going to be finished) and I would always research everyone’s part so I knew that it wouldn’t lack one part if that person didn’t do its part, but I would always include the information they researched in the essay, but in that way I at least would know that I wasn’t writing nonsense on the essay when they gave me their part and it would be a tool to help the ones that had a hard time finding their part (I liked to be prepared and I liked to be able to help who needed and I liked to know all the subject being researched, normally a lot more profoundly than needed to do the essay ... as I said overachiever)

If there’s something that I have to thank Produce 101 for, is that it finally opened my eyes to Nu’est. I regret not paying any attention to them earlier, and even looking back I realise that I liked all their songs, but never really had any interest in the group itself.

Since their debut, Nu’est have been doing stuff that was basically avantgarde in terms of k-pop; now that electronic/EDM inspired pop has reached Korea, they can keep doing what they’ve always done and still sound better than everyone else.

Their title track Where You At is completely faithful to what their style has been so far; it’s EDM, but it somehow feels more refined than a lot of stuff that’s been put out recently. There’s a very trendy drop, but it’s announced by Dongho’s explosive vocals. There is a rap break, but it isn’t completely disjointed from the song.

While I wasn’t expecting that most of the album tracks would be solo songs, I do think that this is the best time for them to experiment: they were on the brink of disbanding, so anything that happens between now and contract renewal (and Minhyun’s return, hopefully) is a chance to test themselves and prepare for what they will do when they are back as 5. It’s also true that each of them can absolutely hold his own as a solo singer, which is not true of every group.

7 for 7 – GOT7

I’m going to quote my March 2017 self:

I never felt like GOT7 had a clear identity, but listening to their singles up to Fly, there is a faint thread that was completely cut with Hard Carry (the wooooorst) and hasn’t been picked up with Never Ever.

As of October 2017, I think GOT7 are back on track: with 7 for 7 and lead single You Are, I feel like they’ve finally gone back to their “romantic universe” concept, which is what has suited them best right from the beginning.

I was hoping this would happen ever since JYP’s new boy group, temporarily called Stray Kids, was announced. They seem to have been assigned the iKON/BTS image, leaving GOT7 free to shed their Never Ever grimy concept and go back to what they do best.

While previous songs relied heavily on GOT7’s not-so-amazing rappers, You Are features their super talented singers – not a complete surprise, after JJ Project had done so well this summer. The EDM elements of their previous releases are still there, but the vocalists really make the song special; I never stop being surprised by how lovely Youngjae’s part in the chorus is.

Of course I’m happy that the singers get to shine because that’s my personal taste, but it’s worth noting that this completes the shift of Jackson and Bambam from the most prominent members of the group to background figures. The difference between their presence in the Fly and the You Are performances is stark.

This bizarre dynamic – the members who caused trouble shoved in the back and the popular members thrown at the front – in the context of an album that is literally called 7 for 7, and the rhetoric of them being a 7-member group being very much reinforced.

I’m quite wary of this language being used at a time where the group is quite fragmented – there was a point a few months ago in which the members were spread over four countries when they were supposedly preparing two comebacks. Instead of feeling reassuring, it suggests that the situation is not quite as stable as it should be.

As far as I’m concerned, GOT7 have found their sound (again) and I would be more than happy for them to continue on this path. I’m curious to see if they will manage to stick to it for two comebacks in a row, and if it’s really true that #OT7 is forever.

Move – Taemin

If I had more time and more of a willingness to be disappointed by SM Entertainment, I would look into what was cut from the subpar video for Move, the title track of an otherwise perfect comeback. There isn’t a single bad song in this album. The aesthetics and styling are wonderful. The choreography for Move is the sexiest thing to have been performed by a man on a k-pop show this year.

K-pop either does big bangers or big ballads, but Taemin needs neither. The 80’s synth works perfectly with his breathy, sexy vocals. Move doesn’t exist in a completely different universe to last year’s Press Your Number, which had different 80’s elements, but it’s still something new and unique in the k-pop panorama.

While every single song on this album would be worth mentioning, I’m always struck by how much emotion he manages to put in his ballads. He could be talking about socks, and Rise would still make me cry for three hours.

I will be endlessly impressed with Taemin, who could have had nothing at this point if it was for SM (not the greatest at growing talents, sorry not sorry), and instead has managed to find an image for himself and to grow as a true artist. I hope he keeps it up for a long time.

Twicetagram – TWICE

It turns out that I’d rather hate Twice’s songs: at least I can pretend they don’t exist. When I find them catchy, which is the case for Likey, I am destined to suffer because of the absolutely revolting lyrics.

“I’m holding in my breath so I can zip up / Pulling it over my waist once more” “There are so many / Pretty clothes in this world”

I know that pop songs aren't that deep, and that this is not their first song with terrible lyrics, but it's shameful that a group as loved by young girls as Twice would push the idea that it's women's duty to look attractive to others (men, that is). This is one of the cases in which I’m kind of happy that my Korean is not that good, because I can just pretend that they’re not being absolutely idiotic and enjoy the song on my commute.

This is one of their better comebacks as far as I’m concerned: they all get to properly dance after Momo’s break, they aren’t dressed like schoolchildren, there is some actual singing from members that never made a sound before.

On the upside, while they still have zero production credits, many of the members got to write lyrics for the album tracks, which is more than many other girl groups ever get to do. Even the Wonder Girls members only had a handful of lyrics credits until the group was on the verge of disbandment and had to write their own songs. I love 24/7, Rollin’ and Don’t Give Up.

RAPID FIRE ROUND

Max & Match – LOONA Odd Eye Circle

I don’t know why it’s been so exhausting to follow Odd Eye Circle. I found Girl Front a bit too cute for what I was expecting, but on the other hand the choreography for repackage single Sweet Crazy Love is a bit too sexy for Choerry (who is only 16). While I love the song this time around, and I do think they look incredible in the video, I’m just looking forward to moving onto the next batch of girls and not have to question the concept of OEC anymore.

Fantasy – JBJ

With JBJ, basically all my Produce 101 favourites who didn’t make it into Wanna One have debuted in one form or the other. The song and the costuming have a very old school k-pop flavour, which is an interesting choice in a context where the trendiest post-Produce group wins (hi and bye, Rainz). I’m especially glad to see model-turned-idol Hyunbin onstage, because now YG will be forced to put him in the next boy group (muhahahahhah). I also live for Taehyun’s dancing and Sanggyun’s face rapping, so following them has been an absolute delight.

Knights of the Sun – SF9

I low key wanted to hate SF9’s O Sole Mio because Italy has nothing to do with the Latin sounds and “te quiero”, but my brain has been mushed by Despacito and anything by CNCO, so I was totally endeared by SF9 using their shirts as muletas and those random guitar interludes. I’m also not sure if someone thought that “Latin sounds” referred to actual Latin, because the phrase “ego dormio” is repeated several times in the song and friends, that’s the dead language, not the Enrique Iglesias genre.

It has to be said that all their albums have been excellent so far (I was obsessed with Breaking Sensation earlier in the year) and Knights of the Sun, despite not really sticking to the Latin theme, has some really good songs in it, like falsetto extravaganza Just On My Way.  

Hallelujah – Jimin (AOA)

I don’t even know how to justify this. Jimin’s voice is as grating as ever, and I love it as much as I always do. There is nothing that should bring together her squeaking, the pseudo-reggaeton, the signature “HEY HEY HEY HEY”, and the Christian hook that has nothing to do with the rest of the lyrics. This song makes no sense, but I’ve been listening to it constantly. What the hell are you, babe, hallelujah.
