KCON NY 2019 Recap

Wow I was actually in New York for four days and four nights. When I first saw the fromis_9 KCON NY announcement I knew there was no way I wasn't going to go. It looks like they made some great memories in NY/LA and I wanted a part of the fun too. Plus I wanted to avoid some of the regret I had last year in that I didn't go to KCON LA 2018. I already got super invested in them through June/July but I don't think I was emotionally ready/mature enough to go on a solo trip like this by myself.

Friday, July 5th

So to start out my trip, my flight to Newark was delayed for four hours. At least at the airport, I met the most beautiful family and got to play with their kids for a couple hours. The kids went boy girl boy where the youngest boy was causing trouble (literally me since I’m the third child), and the girl had no concept of stranger danger so she told me a wide assortment of TMIs about her family. The lady sitting next to me (Annie!) on the flight was also the sweetest soul imaginable, so we chatted for a couple hours before both watching Crazy Rich Asians (I admittedly cried at the ending).

I arrived after 9pm (no chance for early check-in or Klub KCON though I didn't want to dance with 16 year olds anyways), and I get anxious af when I'm in a foreign place without knowing exactly where I'm going, so I mass googled/kept asking for strangers for help to get to Manhattan. After I got settled into my hotel, Maya met me outside we went to Times Square! I'm so glad she came out and saw me that night because 1) I haven't seen her since summer of maybe 2016? so I missed her a ton 2) I literally had no idea how the NY subway worked before she told me 3) I wanted to go Times Square at night and 4) I wouldn't have wanted to go alone. We caught up on literally everything and I went to bed pretty late considering I wanted to check-in early to sell my A1 artist engagement pack.

Saturday, July 6th

I got up at 6am EDT (so 3am PDT aka rip), and rushed over to the Javits Convention Center to get in line. I brought like literally nothing because I was afraid you couldn't bring food in or they'd throw away my hydroflask. As it turns it, the staff didn't care at all, and there was hardly any line. After checking in, I got my A1 artist engagement pack ($150) which had an AB6IX high touch, a TXT audience pass, and an SF9 audience pass. 

I almost panicked because I didn't know how popular AB6IX was, and if I had gotten ATEEZ/TXT I literally would have made at least a $100 net profit. I sat in line with some new people before I summoned enough courage to go into the artist engagement mob. Almost immediately, a girl ran up to me and asked me if I wanted to sell my hi-touch. I wanted to gauge the "market price" a bit more because I was still early af, but since I was still kinda panicking, I sold it to her for $100 and her SF9 audience pass. I looked around and that's when I figured out all the girls were trying to trade their hi-touches for the groups they wanted and all the guys were trying to buy their IZ ONE/(G)-IDLE hi-touches (the only two girl groups doing an artist engagement since Everglow couldn't attend and fromis_9 wasn't doing one). For the eight groups there, I'm pretty sure the market price went something alone the lines of

where the ">" shows the relative difference between each group. I thought TXT would be up with ATEEZ but I was clearly wrong. That's why I was pretty happy to get the AB6IX hi-touch off my hands. VeriVery hi-touches were being sold for $20 and people were throwing away their audience passes. I heard someone bought an ATEEZ hi-touch for $550 lmao.

I sold my AB6IX hi-touch, sat back in line with my new friends, and traded my TXT audience pass for an ATEEZ audience pass based on my sense of how popular each group was. I made another lap around the mob and a girl bought my ATEEZ audience pass almost instantly for $40. I made another lap maybe ten minutes later and sold one of my SF9 audience passes for $30 (I'm pretty sure I ripped her off on this one really hard but oh well). I couldn't find a buyer for my other SF9 audience pass so I decided to hold onto it until tomorrow since that's when their artist engagement would be. At this point, I was already +$20 in profit and I still had an audience pass leftover.

All the trading chaos settled at around 8:45am, but the convention didn't start until 11am. I just talked with some 16/17 year olds that were ridiculously into ATEEZ and other boy groups (surprisingly not NUEST or Seventeen).

I was one of the first into the convention and I made a full lap to scout around before picking something to do. The Toyota booth snatched me first and when I told them I was legit gonna get a 2020 Camry they were !!! and made me play their game. You had to search the Corolla for four QR codes, and take selfies with the filter that's prompted after scanning it in 90 seconds. The iPad they gave me glitched the fuck out so I only got three done. They gave me a "The Boyz Meet and Greet" pass which would allow me to go to the front of the line when they made a "surprise visit" at the Toyota booth. I was being a nice guy and told some The Boyz fan about it nearby, so the girl did it, succeeded, and won a fucking IZ ONE hi-touch >.> (people were selling that for $150 minimum...) so yes I'm salty as hell.

At the official merchandise line, if you bought more than $100 of stuff, they'd give you a special merchandise voucher. If you took that voucher to the KCON Star Square, played the game they had every hour and won, you'd get a chance to meet a "surprise artist". There were some official fromis_9 slogan towels for sale for $25, but I decided not to buy it right then and there in case they wanted one big purchase totaling $100. But my dumbass was wrong and the slogan towels sold out 30 minutes later and to this day I still don't have one (they're beautiful). I was also too slow to pre-order it when I bought my convention pass because they closed the presale.

I did some social media sellout booths, wrote some fromis_9 support on the "message to your idols" board, and realized there was nothing to do after that.

I just stood at the Toyota booth where they'd play an entire song and anyone that knew the dance would go up and do it (note they played the ENTIRE song and not just the chorus so for songs that weren't super popular, the stage was empty for a solid two minutes each time). I was only there for maybe 20 minutes, but they played Love Bomb and to my surprise, 4 Walls (which I haven't heard in ages).

I walked around aimlessly for another hour before I realized I hadn't eaten anything for the whole day. I got some really overpriced convention food and sat with some girls I met in line because I was pretty lonely at that point. They were from Chicago and were also there just for ATEEZ. We talked for a bit before they went to line up at MSG for the concert, so I walked around aimlessly for another 45 minutes before I went to one of the panels.

The panel was "The difference between American and KPOP" and Andreas Oberg (wrote Young and Free by Xiumin and Mark, one of my favorite station tracks) and David Amber (wrote Love Bomb, Heart Shaker, Yes or Yes, and Love Bug) were there! The third guy on the panel was pretty annoying, but I'm super interested in how these guys come up with these songs and they shed a ton of insight about it. 

They talked about how most successful kpop songs now are actually a combination of multiple melodies put together, which supposedly make the song more interesting. For their particular styles, they try not to repeat the melody between choruses because that would bore the listener and try to have super catchy parts of the song or even the chorus start the track. Something else I found out which was super interesting is how they tailored certain songs for certain companies and groups. Andreas said SM gave him a ton of freedom, but when JYP asked for a song from David, he needed to make the verses long enough for each member to sing (aka Twice needs more lines since there are nine members) and add in rapping parts if the group had a rapper. They had a Q&A section at the end where two people kinda pissed me off since they went up to the mic and made shameless plugs saying how much they adored Andreas/David and were aspiring song writers like them. I actually summoned the courage myself and asked the panel a few questions:

Do you have a good sense of whether a song you wrote will become super popular?

How do you feel about songs that you are very proud of writing that don't become popular, maybe because it was given to a group that isn't that popular?

Do you think composers deserve more credit for making groups popular? The example I used is Blackpink is SUPER popular but their entire soud is almost exclusively produced by Teddy, which almost no one knows about.

I thought they gave me really insightful responses too:

A little bit, but once the song is produced, it's in the hands of the company to promote it with the artist and the choreography.

They're sometimes really sad about songs they create that don't make it big, and Andreas told me he was very fond of Young & Free

David said it's fine the way it is now. The example he used is with movies where the actors/actresses will get all the credit + make the movie famous, but a huge part of the production of the movie is because of the director, who rarely gets any attention.

I walked around aimlessly for another thirty minutes before standing at the KCON Dance Studio to watch the random play dance. I always saw the youtube videos of them so I wanted to see it in person myself. It turns out there was a cluster fuck of people there and we kept getting pushed back so far I couldn't see anything. Two guys in line next to me had Fun Factory albums and fromis_9 posters, so I decided to strike up a conversation with them. It turns out they were also huge flovers AND buddies, so we ditched the random play dance and talked for half an hour about our overall love for kpop. They were also New York locals, and they said they would take me under their wing for the rest of the weekend T_T. We met up with one of the guy's aunts and head to ktown since it was within walking distance, the convention closed at 6, and they wanted something to eat before the concert started at 8.

I took the 순두부 짬뽕 I ordered back to my hotel and ate it while watching the live stream since I only bought a Sunday ticket. On the way back, I also stopped by a store called Koryo Bookstore which sold kpop stuff. I couldn't find any GFriend/fromis_9 stuff I wanted, so I bought a Harry potter book in Korean to practice before going back. The concert livestream was okay, and it felt even shorter because IZ ONE got an extra stage, which I presume was supposed to fill in for Everglow. I lost my shit when NUEST performed Love Paint and Look though because those songs changed my life summer 2016 (they almost made me wish I went). I was still kinda disappointed in them because they had a ton of fans, but they gave off the vibe they only came to NY just to do the concert and leave. I tried sleeping early but as I crawled into bed, I got a fromis_9 vlive notification and I kinda had to watch it in case they spoiled the activities of tomorrow. I saw on twitter they actually arrived on SATURDAY and just toured New York, so obviously there was no way they could be at Saturday's convention. I spammed in chat if they'd have a pinky promise event for maybe 15 minutes but they never saw the comment. I didn't hear any spoilers so I just went to bed tired af since I got like no sleep in the past two days.

Sunday, July 7th

I woke up pretty late on Sunday and bought an expensive ass fancy bagel before getting to the convention center, though I could hardly eat it since I have literally zero appetite when I’m in a foreign place.

I bought the official fromis_9 jersey to match my two buddies just so everyone would know we were flovers at first sight. I also finally took out my Saerom sign and carried it around the convention center. We watched the Sunday opening ceremony and met up with a third guy (a Wiz One) while we waited for the fromis_9 fanclub meeting at 1:30.

I also found a lady willing to buy my SF9 audience pass for $15, which is ridiculous because I saw people giving it away for free at this point.

The fanclub meeting was really interesting. I instantly locked eyes with a girl that had a Saerom sign and we took a few pictures.

We played bingo with a lot of the squares consisting of fromis_9 memes, and two kahoot games where we had to guess which member it was (the pictures were ridiculous) and name the song after only hearing 1 second of it. At the very end, we did the Love Bomb and Fun! fanchants, but it was nearly impossible doing them without already knowing them if you could read romanized hanguel fast enough. I still screamed my heart out though (seriously).

There was nothing interesting left on the schedule, so we walked around before deciding to go to the (G)-IDLE fanclub meeting as well. I missed most of it because I met up with the girl that printed the banners, but there was a really entertaining random play dance at the end. On the way to get the banners, I met the girl that had the Saerom sign during the fromis_9 fan meeting, so we chatted a bit and exchanged numbers (she was here just for fromis_9 and she came from SWEDEN, so I thought we could bond over that). We closed out the day by going to the "2019 Year of Girl Groups" panel. 

The panel was really boring, one of the members kept swearing, and they just talked about which girl groups they thought were the most influential in the kpop scene. Personally, I thought the SNSD/f(x) answers were meaningful since Gee shook the world and f(x)'s weird sound + Amber broke down a lot of stereotypes at the time, but some of the Twice answers in the group were a huge stretch. Two fans kept talking about how much Twice meant to them and while that's great and all, I think the rest of the audience felt the same way as I did. At the end, they forgot to give away their prizes, so they basically asked us to walk up and convince the audience why we should get the prize. I walked up and told them I was disappointed I came all the way from California just to see fromis_9 but still didn’t get the chance to. That won me this:

It was like 5:30pm after the panel ended, so we (five of us total) went to ktown to get chicken and hype ourselves up for the concert. They were playing Chung Ha and so many other not as popular girl groups (Weki Meki, Gugudan, Cherry Bullet) that we ended up talking about that for the entire time.

We all split up after we got to Madison Square Garden (I had P1, the group of three had P2, one guy had P3) and had maybe five minutes before the concert started because we showed up so late. 

We were all super sad that they started with fromis_9 instead of one of the other boy groups, but I fanchanted and danced my heart out during all the songs.

The people in my section were huge mood killers though. I was sitting in the Chase preferred section, so I feel like the people in that section either a) had their parents use their credit card to buy their tickets or b) got the tickets handed out at some event and weren't even invested in kpop. The two girls to my life were there for seventeen and got on their feet at the end, but the two girls to the right of me sat down and were on their phones for the whole concert.

I got so lucky during the concert. VeriVery covered 24K magic, AB6IX covered Attention, and SF9 covered Love Shot, all songs which I know and love. And a word about Seventeen's stage. I was clearly at KCON for fromis_9, but I also LOVE Seventeen. I didn't pay much attention to their most recent comeback home though since it was a much slower song. However, EVERY SEVENTEEN SONG THEY PERFORMED I ACTUALLY KNEW. They started with 숨이차 which I knew but was indifferent to, but then we got Good To Me, Adore U, AND 아주 Nice. The stadium was freaking shaking during 아주 Nice and when they came back for the surprise encore I think the entire crowd and I died.

I met up with my friends after outside the venue, but three of them had to leave because they had work the next day (locals). I was ready to go back to my hotel content with the concert but disappointed overall, but Sweden girl texted me and told me to meet up with all the other flovers we were with. I met the moderators of the fan club meeting and like ten people that were huge fans and traveled as far as I did here for fromis_9. None of us were tired so we went to ktown to hang out. We talked for two hours over girl groups, fromis_9, guessing each other's biases, and learning our own backstories + age. Like where were these people during the actual convention. Apparently they all knew each other, but because I don't have a twitter, instagram, or am on discord, I was the reason I couldn't be found. I invited Sweden girl to do touristy crap with me on Monday/Tuesday because our flights on Tuesday were at like the same time, but one of the guys there tipped us off for the fromis_9 flash mob happening tomorrow at Washington Square Park at 2:30pm. I personally didn't give a shit about touristy stuff and I only felt obligated to do it because I was in New York, but I clearly only came this far for kpop. We decided to meet up for lunch at like 11am and we all went our separate ways.

Monday, July 8th

We all met up at Chipotle and sat around talking about more kpop stuff.

It was raining surprisingly hard in the morning, so we were all praying the event didn't get canceled. We walked over to Washington Square Park at 1pm and camped out there full of anxiety. I’ll type up what happened at the flash mob in a different post, but in summary, it was the best day of our lives. A ton of flovers had flights to catch, so Sweden girl and got milk tea and just held our hands crying over the event we saw. We rewatched the videos like 15 times (not kidding), took the subway to the Statue of Liberty, took the subway BACK to Washington Square Park because we missed some closure pictures, and then went to Central Park to take more pictures, all while lugging around my silly Saerom sign.

Our heads were in the clouds the entire day so we just sat on a rock and watched the sunset. She met up with a friend from Michigan while I got Halal guys and went back to my hotel room super emotional over the days events.

My dumbass put too much of the red sauce in it which was spicy as HELL so I couldn’t even eat much of it.

Tuesday, July 9th

I woke up late because I wanted to stretch out the best day of my life (yesterday) for as long as possible, and Sweden girl convinced me to go to the airport to say bye to fromis_9 before our flight. I was late as hell, but I booked my ass over to JFK and got to see (G)-IDLE and IZ ONE at the airport (I have videos, not pictures). At the end of the day, fromis_9 wasn't even leaving New York that day so apparently the twitter source was wrong. I wasn't too disappointed though given Monday's events, so I said my good-byes to my partner-in-crime from the weekend and booked my ass to Newark (I was almost late for my flight because New York rush hour, will never underestimate again).

All in all, I give KCON a solid 3/10, but my overall trip was a 12.4/10 because of what happened at Washington Square Park. KCON has much better, ethical ways to suck the money dry out of the fans that are willing to pay. They announce the artist engagement schedule AFTER selling the packs, which baited so many Nuest and Seventeen fans. The layout of the convention was absolutely fucking awful too. They put the Toyota booth dance stage, the KCON stage, the cover stage, and the KCON dance stage fairly close to each other so the music was playing over each other, and the other half of the room had empty booths full of cosmetic products and studying in Korea which has an appeal to like 10% of the people there. They also checked our wristbands when moving between rooms in the convention center, which makes no sense since we needed our wristband to enter the Javits Convention Center period. And in general, there was nothing to do "long term" so so many people were walking around bored like me. The lines for the stuff that could actually be done were ridiculously long (maybe 25-30 minute waits for the free food but that's long enough to miss an entire panel/engagement). The cherry on the cake is they announced the KCON LA lineup today without any teasers (no consistency?) and almost every single artist that went to KCON NY is going to KCON LA. I personally trust KCON LA a bit more to not fuck up everything as bad as KCON NY, but it still feels pretty unethical considering how many of us flew ridiculous distances to NY just for the same line up.

I'm not the biggest fan of New York either. The city is super crowded, smells awful, and I don't feel safe on the streets at all (and I'm a guy). One redeeming quality is that the people that I met were unbelievably nice. I probably asked for directions eight times and every time, I got the most helpful/friendly response. An old white man even saw how I confused I looked an approached me asking exactly how he could help me get to where I wanted to go.

At least now, I think I have the confidence to plan my own solo trip to a faraway place. This was a fun one.

Twelve Months to the Wedding

���We have a few dates available for the fall in the Great Hall and Conservatory,” the events coordinator says, flipping through his calendar book, “We have Friday, the 28th of September and Saturday, the 6th of October. There’s also,” he clicks his tongue, looking over the dates, “There’s also the following Friday and Saturday, the 12th and 13th respectively.”

“What do you think, love?” Jack asks Y/N, squeezing her hand.

“Well, October 13th is mum’s birthday, so let’s not take her day away. Do you have any preferences?”

“No, none.”

“In that case, I think we should go for the Saturday, so we’ll do October 6th.”

“Perfect,” he smiles, typing it into the computer, “And once you get a photographer, let us know so we can schedule engagement and save-the-date photos—those times all be easily available as I’m assuming you’d like to do them at night—if that’s what you’d like. Please call me”—he hands them a business card with his name on it—“if anything changes. We are so happy to host your ceremony for you here at Syon Park.”

“Thank you, thank you so much,” Y/N smiles, standing up and shaking his hand. Jack does the same, smiling widely at Y/N as they exit the office. Once they cross the threshold of the door, he immediately wraps his arms around her waist, lifting her off the ground and spinning her around as he blindly kisses whatever patches of skin his lips land on.

“I’m so happy,” he smiles, “we’re getting married.”

“So, since you’ve done the rather modern tradition of giving her an engagement ring, are there any traditions from your time we should fulfill?” Y/N’s dad asks with a smile on his face. Y/N and Jack had driven back to her hometown to recruit some members of the wedding party, specifically Adrian.

“Well, as dowry, usually the woman’s family would give the man their best sheep.” “Unfortunately, we don’t have any sheep,” her dad laughs. “That’s alright,” Jack smiles, putting his arm around Y/N, “got everything I need, anyway.”

“Adrian,” Y/N smiles as he plays with his toy trains, “Uncle Jack and I have something really important to ask you.” “Yes,” the child simply states.

Y/N and Jack look at each other, confused on how he knew what to answer.

“Adrian, love,” she laughs, “What did you think we were going to ask?” “Mummy said Uncle Jack wants to marry you. You’re asking me if I like Uncle Jack and want him to be apart of the family.”

The couple laughs to each other as Adrian pauses play time, smiling up at them.

“Not quite what we were asking,” Jack chuckles, “I did ask your Auntie Y/N to marry me. Our wedding will be next year.”

Adrian’s head snaps up, eyes excited and bright, “I want to be a groom-man!”

“Oh, that’d be a really big responsibility, lad,” Jack replies, ruffling the boy’s hair. “I can do it! I can do it! I can do it, Uncle Jack, I promise!”

Jack looks at Y/N, who only shrugs.

“Hm, that sounds like a grand idea, but we’ve still not got a page boy…” he sighs, feigning disappointment.

Adrian looks thoughtful before he scampers out of the room. Jack can faintly make out the whispering between Adrian and his father before the boy comes running back in.

“Daddy says a good groom-man al-always steps up when he’s needed. I’ll be page boy.” “Alright, Adrian! Already such a wonderful groomsman for me,” Jack grins, opening his arms wide. Adrian happily jumps into his embrace before turning to kiss Y/N on the cheek.

Y/N’s parents looked suspiciously amused as they walked through the door after talking to Adrian.

“Mum, Dad,” she said, “What’s going on?” “Well, we said we don’t have a sheep, so your mum and I went out and bought one.” “Oh, oh no, sir, you didn’t have to—“

Her dad disappears into the living room before returning with a large, fluffy stuffed animal sheep.

“Here’s our best sheep.” “Oh, that’s even better,” Jack laughs. “Maybe it can be our something new,” Y/N laughs, “And you can be the something old.” “Oi!”

Ten Months to the Wedding

“I’m so excited,” Y/N gushes as she, Jack, her bridesmaids and her mum file into the elevator after confirming their appointment with reception.

A sales associate, Jamie, greets them as the door open, directing them to the table of pastries and selections of coffee and tea to grab and help themselves to as Y/N shops for a dress. While the guests have their refreshments, they pull the couple aside to ask some questions.

“So, what’s the budget?”

Jack is quick to answer before Y/N can get a word in, “There is none.”

Jamie’s eyebrows raise quizzically at the bride, who looks at her fiancé in shock. “You’re mad,” she comments.

“Now, now, now,” they speak, waving away the cloud of disagreement that appears around them, “so, he says no budget, you say there should be one. Why don’t we agree on a range?”

“Fifteen to twenty,” Jack offers. “Hundred?” Y/N asks. “No, thousand.” “Absolutely not!”

Jamie’s face scrunches up in slight discomfort. “Okay, how about ten to fifteen?”

“No, still too high. Eight to ten,” Y/N states, “Too low!” Jack cries. “I don’t care, Jack, you’re not spending over ten thousand pounds on a dress I’m only wearing once!” “Eight to twelve. Nothing lower than eight. If it’s higher than twelve, it’s fine.” “I’m not looking higher than twelve.”

Jamie interjects quickly, “Is this budget including shoes and a veil?”

“I don’t want a veil.” “I want you to have a veil. And, no, this is just the budget for the dress. Add bridal jewelry as well, and shoes too. Pull out all the stops. Go ham, as you say.” “Jack—“ “Please,” he implores, “I promise whatever you settle on I’ll pay for it all. Glass slippers, a veil with crystals sewn into it, whatever. If you’re gonna indulge anywhere, indulge here, we’ll figure things out from there.” “You’ve turned into Groomzilla already,” Y/N laughs, “You’re insane.” “Maybe so,” Jack shrugs, kissing her temple.

“So, we’re in agreements, eight to twelve for the dress, then we’ll also browse shoes, veils and jewelry?” Jamie asks, hoping the couple will happily agree so that they can get started.

Y/N huffs through her nose, “If that’s what I have to agree to in order to get him outta here so I can start trying on dresses, then yes.” “No, wait,” Jack starts. “Jack, it’s tradition for the groom to not see his bride in the dress until the ceremony!” “But can I just see you in one dress?” he bargains.

Y/N huffs, glancing at the audience composed of her bridesmaids, her mum and Jamie. “Go and pick one you want to see me in,” she answers, much to the astonishment of her audience.

Jack looks over the moon as he browses through the racks while everyone takes a seat and Y/N stands with Jamie, waiting for him to make a selection. He pulls off dresses and replaces them before he settles on an A-line ball gown. It’s stark white with little embellishments on the bodice. It’s simple and a good start; he hopes she’ll like it.

He hands the hanger over to Jamie and they lead Y/N down the hall to the dressing rooms. Jack takes a seat on the couch next to Y/N’s mum, who pats his knee as it shakes in anticipation.

A few minutes tick by before he sees her reflection in the big mirror of the salon, head whipping around to watch her walk the rest of the way to them. She steps onto the stage, illuminated by the lights pointed at her to perfectly show all aspects of the dress and her. She smiles pointedly at him as he looks at her as if he was seeing the sun for the first time: in awe, in adoration.

“Well, Mr. Groom,” Jamie smiles, “what do we think?” “She’s…she’s a vision,” he chokes out, tears falling down his cheeks. He catches her rolling her eyes. “You are!” he exclaims, “You are. You’re absolutely radiant.”

He stands up to hug her, holding her tightly between his arms as he cries happily.

“Can’t wait to see the one you pick.” “Well, you’ll be waiting a long time, because you’ve gotta go now,” she laughs. “Wait, wait, give us a twirl,” he requests, taking her hand to keep her steady as she spins on the small stage, the gems on the bodice glinting as they catch the light. “Okay,” he sighs, leaning down to kiss her, “I’ll go now. I’ll be in the lobby.”

Jack waves from the elevator, keeping the image of her in the dress and filing it away into his happy memories.

“Oh thank God,” Jamie gushes, “I thought he’d never leave!”

Laughter erupts from the group of women before Jamie brings them back to business, asking Y/N what she thinks of the dress.

“I like it, actually, it’s not too far-fetched from what I wanted,” she says, turning to look at herself from the mirror, “but it is a bit simplistic, so I think I want something a bit…more.” “A bit more what?” they ask, looking very thoughtful and analytic. “Just…more,” she laughs, gesturing broadly, “But not too much,” she quickly tacks on. “Still don’t wanna go too over-budget.” “Alright,” they laugh, “But we like this silhouette, we like this neck line?” “Yeah, I do, or, I actually don’t know how the bridal entourage feels…”

They share their opinions and for the most part agree that the dress needs a bit more, but is in a good ballpark.

“I guess Mr. Groom knew what he was doing after all,” Jamie laughs, helping Y/N off the stage, “let’s get you out of this dress and I’ll do some browsing with your entourage to find something.”

Y/N had tried on five dresses that weren’t quite hitting the mark, each one more beautiful than the other, though all of them lacked the “wow” factor that screamed “This is her as a bride.”

“Maybe,” Isabel, one of Y/N’s childhood friends, began, “I know he pulled a white dress and we’ve been pulling white dresses, but maybe we should look for something with a pop of color. He always talks about how you bring color into his life.” “That wouldn’t be a bad idea,” Lily shrugged. “And it wouldn’t have to be all a different color. Just a belt or some colored beading.” “What do you think, mum? I know you wanted me in a white dress,” Y/N asks. “I’m not paying for it,” she shrugs, “I just want it to be the dress you want to wear.” “What are we thinking?” Jamie asks as Y/N looks at her reflection again. Her head tilts as she mulls over the idea, though it gives her a perfect angle to spy a dress on a mannequin, exactly what her bridal party is suggesting: white fabric with deep pink embellishments. “I think I should try that one,” Y/N says, craning her neck to point to it.

Jamie and Y/N walk back to the dressing room where they help her into it, zipping it up in the back and fastening all the buttons. When she sees herself in the mirror, bingo, is all she thinks.

“I think it’s this one.”

They return back to the show room, eyes already fogging up at the sight of her. There’s sighs and exclamations of joy and excitement, tears streaming down cheeks and squeals.

“That’s it, that’s the one!” appears to be the general consensus, making Y/N smile. First try and she got it right.

“I’d like to see it with a veil,” her mum says, “and shoes. And that necklace over there.”

Everyone pitches in to help dress her up, her mum pinning a golden headpiece and a veil into her hair and draping it over her shoulders as her bridesmaids help her into a pair pf dark red satin shoes, decorated with gold leaves at the heel. Y/N protests at the addition of another necklace, wanting to keep Jack’s locket around her neck for the ceremony, though she allows them to add bracelets on both her wrists.

When Y/N looks in the mirror, she gets the “wow” factor and more.

“How do we feel?” Jamie asks, smiling widely as they stand next to her entourage. “I feel like a bride. I wanna marry him, like, right now.” “Right now?” “Yes, right now,” she giggles almost deliriously, feeling so giddy and excited.

“Well, unfortunately your ceremony is in October so you’ll have to wait a bit. In the mean time, why don’t we get you out of this and down to Mr. Groom so he can pay for this?”

Since getting into gardening, Jack had grown quite the green thumb, becoming a proper expert on flowers and color schemes. He insisted they didn’t need a florist right away because he could come up with his own flower arrangements, and he did.

“Okay,” Jack says proudly, setting three vases on the dining table between the pieces of paper strewn about as Y/N works on seating arrangements and guest lists. He had been working on the flowers and ribbons all day and he’s excited to see her reaction.

She looks up, looking at the flowers with an unreadable expression. “What?”

Not the reaction I was expecting, his thinks.

“Well, what do you think?” he asks eagerly. “They’re nice,” she shrugs, her focus quickly going back to the papers in front of her.

Jack breathes in slowly, gathering his thoughts. “Thank you,” he manages (she did compliment them after all), “Which one do you like best?” “I don’t know,” she says. “You haven’t even looked—“ “Well, you know what, I can’t look right now, Jack. It’s not a good time if it wasn’t obvious, which apparently I guess it’s not because we’re here talking about this.”

For once, Jack feels small, her tone reminiscent of an angry mother scolding her child.

“My mum is asking me to invite some stranger and his family to our wedding and I have to rearrange the tables so that they’re not misplaced but I can’t do it without displacing a bunch of other people. And then we have to pay for them, which is ridiculous because I don’t even know him and you want me to think about flower arrangements?” “I’m sorry—“ “I haven’t got time to think about these right now so just take the stupid things away.”

She immediately goes back to working, scratching over someone’s name with the pen and then writing down another name. Jack’s eyes drift to the floor, feeling a little embarrassed before he takes another deep breath and gathers the vases into his arms again.

“I’m sorry.”

He sets them onto the coffee table and goes upstairs, bringing the cats along with him to give Y/N the space she needs.

“Jack?” Y/N asks as she knocks on the bedroom door.

She nudges the door open and is quickly greeted by the cats, mewling and rubbing against her legs. She’s more concerned with the man sitting on the bed looking at her over the screen of his laptop.

“I-I’m sorry,” she says, her voice barely above a whisper. “I’m so sorry, and I’m so ashamed that I treated you that way, it wasn’t fair. Mum’s just really frustrating me and I took it out on you but that wasn’t right. I love you, and the flowers are beautiful. I’m so sorry.”

Her pride crumbles at her feet, tears falling down her cheeks as she quickly wipes them away. Jack doesn’t say anything, focusing on the stone on her finger that catches the light as she wipes at her face. He closes his laptop and sets it on the bed, getting up and walking towards her to bring her into his chest.

“S’alright. I just ask you to talk to me next time this happens. I shouldn’t have pushed you and I should’ve gotten the message sooner.” “I was horrible to you.” “No one I’d rather have be horrible to me than you,” he jokes, trying to make light of the situation.

Y/N buries her face in his chest, holding him tightly as he presses kisses to her forehead.

She mumbles something into his shirt, the clothing muffling her words.

“What was that?” he asks, slightly leaning back to try to get a good look at her face.

She turns her face away from his chest, resting her cheek there.

“I like the white, yellow and pastel pink ones. With the dark red trim.”

Jack smiles as he places his hand under her jaw to tilt her face up so she can look at him. He gives her a sweet, chaste kiss, leaning his forehead against hers.

“Those are my favorite, too.”

Six Months to the Wedding

“Shall we go?” Y/N asks, looking out the window and finding the sun has set enough to end the Golden Hour, ushering in the Blue Hour. Some light still floods over the horizon, but not enough to hurt Jack.

“Yes, yes, I’ll just have them turn on the lights for us and we’ll head out,” the photographer, Helen, smiles.

Y/N glances into the mirror to make sure everything’s good, fluffing up her hair and checking to ensure her makeup still looks good. They had spent the better part of the late afternoon and early evening taking photos in the library of the house, lounging and doting on each other. Some photos she was sat in his lap as they read together, others she’d be sitting on an ottoman as Jack read over her shoulder.

For these sets of photos, they ventured outside to take photos on the lawn and by the fountain. Helen snapped pictures of Jack twirling his fiancee before pulling her in for a kiss, sitting on the edge of the fountain in front of the conservatory. There was also a set up of candelabras and lanterns around a picnic blanket where Y/N put her head in Jack’s lap or they laid next to each other, smiling sweetly like two teenagers in love.

Later, when they launched their wedding website, doing so while lazing together on the couch, it was filled with pictures of them: holding hands, Y/N twirling as Jack held her steady, smiling at each other as Jack carried her, reclined together on the picnic blanket in the buttery glow of the candelabras and lanterns.

“I’m so excited,” Jack hums, pressing a series of kisses onto her, “I’m never gonna get over it. We’re getting married.” “You’re probably going to say that in the middle of the ceremony,” she laughs, “I’ll look at you and you’ll just say that.” “It’ll never wear off.” “Talk to me when I’m older and we’re both bitter.” “No, no way. Fifty years will go by and I’ll still look at you like this.” “You’ll have to make that promise at our wedding in front of all our witnesses.” “I will. And I’ll keep it.”

Four Months to the Wedding

The couple sits across the desk from Nathan, the jeweler who made the engagement ring. It was time to pick their wedding bands, and Nathan pulled out all the stops, mostly to satisfy Jack’s request to do so.

“I think I’ll stick with the rose gold, so that it looks consistent,” she says as he nods. “Excellent choice. Now for you, Jack, may I suggest a yellow gold—“ “What, me?” Jack asks, “I get a wedding ring too?” “Well, yes,” Nathan replies, allowing a chuckle to escape, “it’s customary for the man and woman to both get a wedding band.” “Since when?”

Of course he’d ask that. He’s been around for almost two hundred years. Times have changed, and he’s tried to keep up as much as he could, but some things have slipped past his observations.

“I believe the early 1900s, sir.”

Jack’s completely elated at this news. When he was growing up, only the women got wedding rings. Now he gets to have one like Y/N.

“I want rose gold, too, then. Like my fiancée. My wife.”

She smiles at him with adoration, finding it so sweet he’d do that for her.

“Forgive me, sir, but rose gold isn’t very customary for the groom—“ “I want it. I want to match her,” he states, no ifs, ands or buts about it. He makes it clear that’s his final decision and nothing is going to change it.

Two Months to the Wedding

After opening presents and indulging in some cake, Y/N chatted amongst Jack’s great-great-great-great grandnieces and friends when she heard the door open and close.

“What are you all doing here? Women only!” “I miss her,” she hears him explain.

As much as she loves him, she rolls her eyes.

She straightens up from her relaxed position, resting the small of her back against the counter top. She adjusts the sash that said “Bride to Be” and walked into the hallway, finding her mum reprimanding her fiancé.

“It’s alright, mum,” she laughs. She waves to Ash and Garrett and greets her father before Jack sweeps her into his arms, pressing his lips to her cheek and keeping them there.

“You’re a sap,” she teases, scratching the short strands of hair on the back of his head.

Some of her guests look on and coo at the display of affection.

“Tonight you better stay out with them until 2. You’re not allowed in the house till then,” she says, poking into his chest. “I don’t know if I can go that long,” he pouts.

Ash and Garrett gag behind them and Y/N laughs. “Ash, there’s some cake in the kitchen, help yourself.” “YES!” he cheers, disappearing into the room. “I’ll go make sure he doesn’t inhale it,” Garrett laughs, following his boyfriend. “Come socialize,” she says, bringing him into the living room. “As long as your aunts don’t—“ “Jack!! How wonderful to see you darling!” “Ah, Aunt Sharon, how are you?”

He’s swept away from her, throwing a pained look over his shoulder as she giggles.

“I’ve got money saying he doesn’t last five minutes,” Y/N’s mum whispers.

Y/N laughs before quickly collecting herself so to not draw too much curiosity to the situation. “My money says he won’t last ten.”

They set the stakes as they giggle and Y/N spots Jack scowling at her. He heard the wager. She only shrugs and blows him a rather chastising kiss, which causes his resolve to crumble as he smiles sweetly at her.

“You’re lucky,” her mum whispers, “Not that many fiancés would crash a bridal shower just to see their love.” “Yeah, I am,” Y/N smiles at him.

I love you, she makes out the movement of his lips.

I love you, too, she replies, hand over her heart.

“2 AM,” she laughs, “That’s four hours. You can go that long.” “Do I have to?” “Yes,” the men chorus behind him. Thomas had flown out just for this and his great-great-great-great grandnephews (or his “cousins”) had driven down as well, all of them ready for a night out. “You’re one for tradition, aren’t you?” Y/N pinches his cheek, “This is a tradition.”

Jack groans before she silences him with a kiss.

“Be safe, okay?” she whispers. “I will.”

Thomas loudly clears his throat and Y/N takes that as her cue to let him go.

“Have fun, boys. Take care.”

Jack’s nose wrinkles at his cousins’ choice of venue for a bachelor party.

“A STRIP CLUB?” he shouts over the music, mortified. “Yeah, mate!” one of them cheers, “Tonight, you’re single!” “But I don’t wanna be single,” he mumbles. “At least drink,” Thomas laughs, “Come on. Haven’t bought you a drink in ages.”

Jack cringes in discomfort as the girls dance on stage, though his cousins are having the time of their lives. Ash and Garrett are rightfully disinterested and Thomas laughs at Jack’s scowl.

Jack drinks mostly to avoid getting kicked out of the club, which required a two drink minimum in order to watch.

“IT’S HIS BACHELOR PARTY!” his cousins yell, throwing a couple bills into his lap, piquing the interest of one dancer in particular. Jack gathers the bills quickly and throws them back to his cousins. He just wants to go home now.

He stumbles through the door, catching himself before he nose dives. The cats are startled, meowing and crying out as Jack shushes them. He hears his partner’s feet padding across the floor and down the stairs. The light switches on and he squints.

“Hey, darling,” she greets, kissing his cheek, “How was it?” “Oh, Y/N! They took me to a strip club! I promise I didn’t look!”

She laughs, easily seeing how drunk he is.

“Gosh, I let you go out for one night and this is what happens?” “I promise I’ll never go out without you again!” “Jack,” she laughs, “I’m only teasing. Did you at least have a good time with Thomas?” “I did! He”—hiccup—“He bought me drinks! And so did the other lads!” “I see,” she smiles, having had figured that out the minute he began speaking. “Shall we go to bed, hm?”

Jack nods enthusiastically, following her up the stairs as she switches off the light. Once in the bedroom, he strips and puts on a pair of pajama pants. When he jumps into bed, the force is enough to propel Y/N up a few inches, sending her into a fit of shocked giggles. They laugh together before falling into each others’ embrace, pressing kisses to the others’ face before Y/N dozes off and Jack looks on much like he did when he saw her in a wedding dress. He can’t wait to see the one she chose. October 6th just won’t come fast enough.

ClickFunnels is the most popular funnel building software on the market.

It was founded by Russell Brunson in 2014 and has since then grown a massive community of marketers, small business owners, and entrepreneurs.

Another similarity between GrooveFunnels and ClickFunnels is that they both come with ready-to-use funnel templates.

These templates are ready to use, you only have to plug-in your product and copy, then you’re good to go.

Both platforms have templates for all different kinds of funnels, although it does look like ClickFunnels has a few more. This is to be expected, as ClickFunnels has been in development for a lot longer, meaning they have built more templates.

GrooveMail, the autoresponder feature inside of GrooveFunnels is ready to use, but it is not fully developed yet. However, it’s worth noting that Mike Filsaime and John Cornetta are planning to make GrooveMail as advanced as ActiveCampaign and GetResponse once it’s fully developed.

ClickFunnels’ follow-up funnels are fully developed but don’t quite have as many automation triggers (or rules, they are called in ClickFunnels) as for example ActiveCampaign.

That being said, the follow-up funnels are still more than enough to build effective email marketing campaigns.

You can also integrate ClickFunnels and GrooveFunnels with any other email marketing software if you needed to.

Learning Curve

Despite both GrooveFunnels and ClickFunnels being easy to use, they also have a learning curve.

This is because it will naturally take you some time until you fully understand the platform’s features and how they work. It’s not like a massive learning curve like you may know from other SaaS tools, it’s more just getting used to the platforms.

Share Funnels

Something that is also quite cool about both of these platforms is the ability to create share funnels.

Using a unique link (or code for GrooveFunnels) you can share your entire funnel with another user in minutes.

It doesn’t matter whether it’s a membership site, a squeeze page, or your sales page, it can easily be shared with another user of the platform.

Drag & Drop Page Builder

GrooveFunnels and ClickFunnels also have an easy-to-use drag and drop page builder.

Both page builders work similarly by letting you drag and drop your sections and elements to build your landing pages and funnels.

Combined with the beautiful templates that we spoke about earlier, GrooveFunnels and ClickFunnels make it easy to build high-converting funnels.

Shopping Cart Feature

Another feature that is similar inside of ClickFunnels and GrooveFunnels is the shopping cart feature.

Both platforms easily let you build high-converting checkouts that you can use for your sales pages.

ClickFunnels and GrooveFunnels also let you add order bumps onto your cart to help you make more sales.

Upsell & Downsell Pages

Upsell and downsell pages are essential if you want to make the most out of every sale.

GrooveFunnels clearly aims to set a new standard in terms of features in the funnel-building category. Below, you can see all the things it has which ClickFunnels doesn’t.

If you need most of them, then that’s definitely a reason to consider GrooveFunnels over ClickFunnels.

A Free-Forever Plan

First of all, it has a free forever plan.

If you join GrooveFunnels now, you can get the core features (GroovePages + GrooveSell) for completely free. You can connect custom domains, build pages, and sell your products.

ClickFunnels on the other hand doesn’t have a free plan, so that is something only available in GrooveFunnels.

GrooveVideo

Another quite big feature only available in GrooveFunnels is video hosting.

Videos that you use in your membership sites or on your sales pages will need to be hosted somewhere other than YouTube.

This means, if you use ClickFunnels you will need to use an external service that can often cost $99 per month.

GrooveCalendar

GrooveCalendar is a calendar feature as the name suggests.

This feature helps you book appointments and manage your time. If you’re a service-based business or offer consultations, then you might use something like Calendly already.

But, GrooveFunnels has it built it, meaning you would save additional subscription costs.

If you do need a calendar app, then this could be another reason why GrooveFunnels might be a better fit for you.

GrooveDesk

GrooveDesk is a helpdesk feature which is also directly built into GrooveFunnels.

ClickFunnels doesn’t have anything like this, meaning you’ll have to get another external tool for this purpose as well.

GrooveBlog 

GrooveBlog is the blogging feature inside of GrooveFunnels.

Although, it’s still in development as of right now, the plans they have for this feature are pretty big.

In 2021, there will be a plugin store/marketplace where 3rd party developers can contribute new plugins making it an open-source platform similar to WordPress.

This is one of the GrooveFunnels features that I am extremely excited for, as I enjoy both blogging and building sales funnels.

And, up until now, there hasn’t been a funnel builder which has managed to combine the two, so I’ve always had to continue using WordPress when creating blogs.

Faster Load Times 

The pages you build inside of GrooveFunnels will also load much quicker than anything built in ClickFunnels.

If your pages load faster, they will also convert better and therefore make you more money. Plus, they will also rank better in Google and other search engines.

Quiz Builder 

GrooveQuiz is a feature that lets you quiz your audience. This can be a great way to engage your audience and it’s only available inside of GrooveFunnels.

That being said, you can build basic quizzes in ClickFunnels too by interlinking the buttons and pages, however, this is rather limited compared to what Groove has to offer.

Hosted Webinars

Another feature that isn’t available in ClickFunnels is the ability to host webinars.

GrooveWebinar lets you host both your regular webinars and your auto-webinars (or evergreen), while ClickFunnels doesn’t.

If you decide to use ClickFunnels you will also need an external hosting service to host your webinars which is quite annoying, as it’s another additional cost.

GrooveSurvey

GrooveSurvey is the survey builder inside of GrooveFunnels.

You can use this feature to get detailed information about your customers allowing you to make tweaks in your marketing or business in general to increase your sales.

ClickFunnels Drawbacks

Despite its popularity, ClickFunnels does have some drawbacks compared to GrooveFunnels. You may find that these limitations don’t really impact you, but that depends on your business.

If they are problems that affect your business, then you should consider using something like GrooveFunnels instead.

Limited Basic Plan

The first ClickFunnels drawback is how limited their basic plan is.

In their basic plan, you don’t get access to:

Priority support

Affiliate management

Follow-up funnels

Plus, it also has some annoying limits on the number of pages, funnels, and domains.

Despite these limitations, this plan does cost $97 per month which probably isn’t the best value for the money.

No Video Hosting

ClickFunnels also has no video hosting functionality meaning you will need something external like Vimeo or Wistia which will cost you at least $49 per month.

If you are hosting videos for an entire membership site, this will usually cost you at least $99 per month.

Pages Do Not Rank Well In Google

The pages built inside of ClickFunnels are quite slow and you have limited control over them.

If you’re looking to get traffic from search engines, then using ClickFunnels will not be your best bet. GrooveFunnels on the other hand has fast-loading pages meaning it’s better for SEO.

No blog feature

If you want to have a blog, there is no way of having it inside of ClickFunnels.

As mentioned earlier, this means you will need a separate blog on something like WordPress. And, it can also be quite tricky to get your ClickFunnels pages on the same domain as your WordPress pages.

You can integrate the two, but then ClickFunnels pages often load even slower. Or, you can use a subdomain that isn’t as good for your SEO and can also cause a feeling of disconnect between your blog and funnels.

Affiliate Management Tracking Is Not Great

Another ClickFunnels drawback is the affiliate management tool. While the options you have managing your affiliates are alright, the tracking is limited.

More importantly, the tracking doesn’t seem very accurate.

ClickFunnels uses their own affiliate management software (BackPack) for their affiliate program. As a ClickFunnels affiliate myself, I have noticed that sometimes the tracking is off.

There is also quite a bit of talk in the ClickFunnels affiliate community that people have not been credited for some referrals, or they have noticed that they have been credited for a referral that has someone else’s tracking ID.

Fortunately, this doesn’t seem to happen often, but it does happen.

This is a shame, and I hope that ClickFunnels will fix this soon, because it is honestly a good product, and they have one of the best affiliate programs in the industry.

However, because of this, I would have concerns about using BackPack myself to promote my own products at the moment.

When it comes to using BackPack and tracking your affiliates, the information you get for each affiliate is:

Trials signed up

Earnings (Daily, weekly, monthly)

When they joined

Payment email

GrooveFunnels on the other hand gives you detailed analytics for every single affiliate.

For example, you can see how much traffic each affiliate is referring to you. Now, if one affiliate is sending thousands of visitors and none are converting, you can check the traffic quality.

If the affiliate is sending spammy or non-targeted traffic, you’ll probably want to remove them or at least warn them, as it can mess up your advertising pixels.

With ClickFunnels, you wouldn’t know if this is the case as you can’t see how many visitors are coming from each affiliate.

No free plan

Unlike GrooveFunnels, ClickFunnels doesn’t have a free plan.

This means if you want to use it, you’ll have to go straight onto the $97 per month plan. Of course, there is a free trial, but it’s not quite the same as a free-forever plan.

GrooveFunnels Drawbacks

Although GrooveFunnels has a much smaller quantity of drawbacks, no software is perfect. It also has its disadvantages and the main reason for them is that it’s still in the early stages.

If this is something that you can’t tolerate, then consider using the ClickFunnels trial to see whether that is the best option for you.

Still in Beta

The first and probably biggest drawback is that it’s still in beta. A lot of the features inside of this software are still being developed, meaning you don’t have a finished product.

Additionally, you might not be sure that it even does what it promises to. However, given that it’s already a killer platform and has founders with a successful track record of creating SaaS tools, I think it’s almost certain that it will hold its promise.

The main part of this drawback is only in the short term, which is that it’s not fully developed yet.

Smaller Community (but, it’s still in the early stages)

GrooveFunnels has a smaller community than ClickFunnels. That is to be expected though, as it’s still in early stages.

Given that GrooveFunnels is in such early stages, you can probably expect the size of their community to catch up in the following years.

Setting up custom domains is slightly more tricky

Another small drawback of GrooveFunnels is that setting up custom domains is slightly more tricky.

This isn’t a biggie and after setting them up once, you’ll get used to it. But, it can be annoying the first time setting up, as you have to go into the DNS settings of your domain.

GrooveFunnels vs ClickFunnels: Pricing

GrooveFunnels Pricing

GrooveFunnels has a free plan as I did mention throughout this article. But the paid plans are just as good value for money.

For example, the silver plan gives you almost an identical set of features as ClickFunnels’ $297 per month plan. The difference being you get video hosting instead of webinars.

At $199 per month, GrooveFunnels Gold is a pretty good deal too, as you also get access to GrooveBlog, GrooveDesk, and GrooveCalendar.

The platinum plan at $299 per month, gives you access to everything offering inside of Groove including the E-commerce platform GrooveKart.

Depending on when you are seeing this, there may still be a lifetime deal available for GroovePlatinum.

If the deal is available, you can get lifetime access to everything inside of GrooveFunnels for $1397. Considering this normally costs $299 per month, that is a crazy deal.

Final Thoughts – ClickFunnels Vs GrooveFunnels – Which Is Best?

As you have seen throughout this comparison, both pieces of software offer a solid funnel-building platform.

One of the key takeaways is that GrooveFunnels offers a free plan that has ClickFunnels’ core features which are the sales funnel builder, and the cart/sales platform. It also has a much larger quantity of features, so you might argue you get more value for your money with Groove.

However, ClickFunnels’ core offering is their funnel builder, and that’s where most of their development goes.

Because of this, and that GrooveFunnels is still in early stages, I would say that ClickFunnels wins in the funnel-building aspect.

Another aspect in which ClickFunnels wins is the educational material that they provide.

The selection of training inside of FunnelFlix is much larger than the material in GrooveFunnels’ GrooveDigital Academy. However, Mike Filsaime has said that this is also an area that will be under constant improvement, with more training courses added regularly.

Overall, I think it’s hard to pick out a winner, as they are both great for their own purposes.

ClickFunnels could be a good option for you if you’re looking for an easy-to-use funnel builder, you want to get access to their FunnelFlix training course library, and you want to plug into their large community.

GrooveFunnels could be a good option for you if you are looking for an all-in-one suite of online business tools with more features, as it can help you save thousands in annual subscription fees.

Once a year, the Oikawa family and the Iwaizumi family went out for a meal together.

‘A meal’.

More like a restaurant crawl. They started at one end of the market street, and then zig-zagged across the street to each and every eatery the families agreed on, eating little bits and pieces from each place before moving on.

Currently, they were at the 6th restaurant. Oikawa was demolishing a full plate of Yakitori, and Iwaizumi was ordering another serving. It would be his third. He’d had about three helpings in each place so far, and their parents laughed and blamed it on them being teenagers after an intense practice session.

Little did they know their sons ate this much on a regular basis. Oikawa because he was unfairly able to eat what he wanted and never gain weight, Iwaizumi because he worked off just as much as he gained. He had a little bit more pudge than Oikawa, but nothing too noticeable unless he wore skintight clothes.

Cheekily, Oikawa leans over and pokes that little bit of pudge.

“Iwa-chan, you’re going to have to do laps tomorrow~.” Iwaizumi smacks his hand away, and gestures to the yakitori sticks that have been licked clean.

“I’m dragging you with me.”

“Wha-!? No way! I haven’t eaten nearly as much as you!”

“Not yet, you haven’t, but we still have three restaurants to go and you always go crazy at the last stop.”

“That’s because it’s a dessert restaurant, Iwa-chan! A dessert restaurant!” Iwaizumi snorts with a laugh and subtly leans against Oikawa.

“Yeah, I heard you the first time.”

“I’m going to get the bubblegum sundae. And the smarties cookie. And the strawberry waffles. And-”

“Easy on there! Finish what you’re eating now first!” Oikawa smirks as he looks at Iwaizumi with a suspiciously soft yet sly expression.

“I know you’ll get the sicilian lemon crepe.”

“… I like crepes, okay.” Oikawa bursts out laughing and shakes his head before turning back to the last of his skewers. Iwaizumi’s nose scrunches up with adoration as he notices the sauce spread all up Oikawa’s cheek. Honestly, he’s such a messy eater.

He’s momentarily distracted by his own food arriving, and starts to eat as fast as possible. They’ll be moving to the next restaurant soon, and he really wants to finish this Okonomiyaki. Takeru helps, Iwaizumi letting the child try some and ending up giving him about a quarter because he likes it.

Unbeknownst to Iwaizumi, Oikawa is watching him with the sappiest expression anyone could imagine. Watching Iwaizumi with children is adorable. No, it’s captivating Endearing, attractive, and charming, Iwaizumi caring for children is an experience. Oikawa is glad that this view is exclusive to him, and the girls at school aren’t here to witness.

As much as Oikawa agrees Iwaizumi deserves a fanclub, he knows that constantly being fawned over would make Iwaizumi self-conscious and grumpy. He was surprisingly shy when it came to being admired.

“Alright, let’s get a move on!” Oikawa’s mother leads the group out of the restaurant and onwards, until they reach their final destination.

Dezāto.

A restaurant entirely for desserts. The Holy Grail of their annual food trail.

Oikawa’s mouth waters, and he can see how Iwaizumi flexes his hands impatiently, waiting for one of their parents to give the go-ahead.

“You brats ready?” There’s a challenging glint in Iwaizumi’s mother’s eyes, and all Oikawa can think is “Like mother, like son.”. This is the exact reason why he misses his mother giving the signal to go, Iwaizumi, Takeru, his big sister, and their parents, all racing to be the first one in the door. Oikawa squawks at his missed opportunity and sprints forwards. They all know one of the Iwaizumi’s will be first, but it’s still fun to race.

As the prophecy foretold, Iwaizumi Hajime is the first to reach the doors, throwing Oikawa a cocky smirk as he skids to a halt just before crashing into the wall.

“You had a head start.”

“Did not.”

“You did.”

“Well maybe if you’d been listening for once, you would have heard auntie shout go.” Oikawa scoffs, not wanting to tell Iwaizumi the reason he had missed the signal was because he was too busy thinking about Iwaizumi.

“Let’s just get food. I want one of everything.”

“No.”

“Not actually one of everything! You know what I mean!” Iwaizumi chuckles, a warm and - dare Oikawa say - cute sound that sends heat to the tips of his ears as their hands brush together affectionately.

“I bet I can eat more than you.”

“Oh yeah?”

“Totally.”

“Iwaizumi Hajime, I am going to eat more than you even if it kills me.”

“I’ll miss you, but my eardrums sure won’t~.”

“Uh, rude!” Oikawa sticks his tongue out and Iwaizumi teasingly pinches it. He’s in good humour - relaxed and comfortable. The family is seated at a group table and giving menu’s, not that Oikawa needs one. He has the whole menu memorised.

“I’m going up first, does anyone want me to order drinks with my food?” A cacophony of drink orders follow, but Oikawa picks out every individual one. He slips away from the table and Takeru follows after him, since he always picks out the same one item.

“It’s noisy here, Uncle Tooru.”

“Well, it is a popular place.”

“You’re noisy too.”

“… You’re such a brat when Nee-san isn’t around.” Takeru grins and flashes Oikawa a peace sign, a taste of his own medicine.

“Oi, cheeky, I saw that.” Takeru is picked up from behind and squeals with a giggle as Iwaizumi scoops the kid onto his shoulders. Oikawa laughs, although it softens into a gooey smile as the corners of his eyes crease.

“Iwa-chan, did you decide what to order?”

“Yeah.”

“… Well?”

“Uh..” Iwaizumi blushes slightly, and with the hand that isn’t holding onto Takeru, scratches his cheek sheepishly.

“The birthday platter…”

“The what?!

“The birthday platter…” Oikawa’s eyes widen and he’s taken aback for a moment.

“The birthday platter?! Hajime, that serves 15 people!”

“I- I wasn’t going to eat it on my own! I thought we could share!”

“… Okay, fair enough.” Takeru snickers slyly.

“So you’re gonna both eat enough for seven people with one left over?”

“Well, someone is getting better at maths.”

“Oikawa, don’t sneer. And Takeru, don’t be snarky. We’ll eat as much as we can and let the rest of you take what you want.” Oikawa rolls his eyes, but then it’s his turn to order and he reels off a list of desserts and drinks, at the perfect speed for the staff member to follow. Maybe he’s been here too often.

“- and an American Cream Soda.” He pays via card, stepping aside for Iwaizumi to do the same, although Iwaizumi’s order is… Slightly… Shorter.

“Birthday platter, hot fudge sundae, sicilian lemon crepe, and a strawberry milkshake, please.”

“And a White Choc Waffle, please!” Takeru waves his pocket money in Iwaizumi’s face as the highschooler laughs and nods at the staff as permission to add it on. He doesn’t take the money from Takeru though, so Oikawa will be sure to sneak him repayment later. Once they’ve both paid, they return to their table.

“So they bring it to us?”

“Yup. That’s why we gave them our table number.” Takeru’s eyes sparkle.

“That’s so cool, I wanna come here all the time!” Before he gets too excited, Oikawa’s older sister draws his attention away with a colouring book and some crayons. He might be ‘too old’ for them, but nobody’s going to judge since Oikawa and Iwaizumi take one too. The table falls quiet, until…

“Birthday platter?” Iwaizumi raises his hand to indicate the platter is his, and it’s slid onto the table in front of him. It’s huge, and he definitely feels embarrassed with his family - and Oikawa’s family by extension - looking at him in various levels of amazement and bewilderment.

“… Do you really think you can eat all that?”

“I’m sharing with Oika- with Tooru.” Oikawa’s mother and father nod in unison as if that explains everything, even as more food is brought out to the table. Oikawa, of course, has half his bubblegum sundae around his mouth, but Iwaizumi rubs it off with a handkerchief. Both of them are oblivious to the way their parents look at each other, like they’re already planning a wedding.

Half an hour and 4 squabbles later, every dish is clean. Anything an individual couldn’t finish alone went straight to Oikawa or Iwaizumi, who were eating right up until the very end. Iwaizumi stopped with a groan when Takeru offered the last few mouthfuls of his waffle, full to the brim. Thanks to a certain uncle, however, Takeru didn’t have to worry about leaving anything uneaten.

Nothing was left. Barely a crumb on the table. Nothing short of devoured. Oikawa went as far as to sweep his finger around the edge of his crepe plate, making sure he had all the chocolate sauce. As if that wasn’t enough, he looked longingly at the desserts the table next to them had just received.

“Oikawa, no.” He pouted, but listened to Iwaizumi as their parents discussed going to a bar for drinks whilst they digested. Probably not the best idea, but it was only a once-yearly thing.

Takeru’s mother - Oikawa’s older sister - looked devastated at having to miss another year. She loved her son, yes, but she never got to have a night out anymore. Not being old enough to drink by Japanese law, Iwaizumi interjected with a soft cough.

“We’ll take Takeru home, if you want to go with them Nee-san.”

“Oh Hajime, you’re a blessing!” He blushed at the praise, turning to hide his face bashfully in Oikawa’s shoulder as the adults cooed over his reaction. Oikawa raised his hand to hold Iwaizumi’s head to his shoulder, ruffling his thick, black hair affectionately.

“Come on, Iwa-chan! I want to get home and catch the last of the marathon on TV!”

“What kind of marathon?”

“Cooking shows.” Iwaizumi groaned at the thought of more food, but it was always amusing to watch the failures of top chefs in the country, especially when they were being lectured by THE top chef of the country.

The walk home was brisk, Takeru holding one of each of their hands to keep him from falling behind as he kept yawning. A full belly always made him sleepy. By the time they got to the house, Takeru was rubbing at his eyes to try and stay awake. Oikawa gently steered him towards the stairs.

“Go and take a nap, you can borrow my bed. We’ll wake you up when Nee-san comes home.”

“Promise?”

“Pinky promise.” They hooked their little fingers together and then Takeru crawled up the stairs to go sleep in his uncle’s room. Iwaizumi wore a crooked, warm smile when Oikawa looked back at him.

“…What?”

“You’re gonna be a good dad, one day.” It was Oikawa’s turn to blush, and he nervously chuckled as he came over to Iwaizumi’s side and sat next to him on the sofa, turning the TV on.

“You will too. I’ll be the fun one though! You can be the stern one!” Iwaizumi softly glares at him, dropping his head onto Oikawa’s shoulder as if he was going to headbutt him but decided to be soft instead.

Ten minutes. Ten minutes is all it takes for Oikawa to break the silence, as they watch the chef cook up some Poulet de Provencal.

“Let’s go shopping.”

“Wh-what?”

“Shopping. Let’s go! The little corner shop has everything I need, let’s go!”

“What about-?”

“Takeru’ll be fine, we’re only gonna be 5 minutes, tops!” Iwaizumi sighs and sits up to let Oikawa jump to his feet, dragging Iwaizumi towards the door as he groans in protest, though does nothing really to stop it. Shoes on feet and jacket wrapped around them, they venture out into the sunset.

“So why are we going to the shop?”

“Because I want to buy something.” Iwaizumi sighs, taking that as an excuse and falls into step next to Oikawa, their shoulders brushing. They get to the little corner shop, and Iwaizumi wanders off towards the magazines. He’s browsing through the latest Your Puppy issue when Oikawa approaches him with a basket full of food. He reaches for the sweets on the stand next to the magazines.

“I’m so hungry, I could eat a- Stop looking at me like that in public.” Iwaizumi’s jaw drops low, head tilted downwards so his chin touches his chest, eyes wide and eyebrows almost joining his hairline.

“You- You’re hungry?”

“… Yeah?”

“Hungry?!”

“Yes, Iwa-chan, we have established this.” Iwaizumi stumbles over his words as Oikawa coolly raises an eyebrow as if to question his manner. When Iwaizumi does get his words out, it’s about three octaves too high.

“How?!”

“Well, the digestive system is quite simple. Once the food gets through-”

“No, I mean! How are you still hungry after everything we’ve eaten?! We had a seven portion dessert not even an hour ago! You had more on top of that! And that was only dessert!”

“When you put it that way…” Oikawa think for a moment then shrugs. He grabs another packet of sweets and flits around to the counter, leaving Iwaizumi gaping at his back. He shakes his head, and pinches the bridge of his nose.

“Tapeworms. The idiot has to have tapeworms. How- Just how-?” His rambling continues until Oikawa loops their arms together, shopping bags split between them, and they walk back to watch the rest of the cooking show.

Oikawa, somehow, polishes off a whole can of pineapple.

Week Seven

5th June Similarly to last week, we had a slightly fragmented day today as we did a bake sale at lunch time in order to fundraise for the performance.

Tom started by leading a warm up, whilst I was responsive and engaged in the warm up, however others seemed to lack commitment, this is something that needs to be addressed as it is not fair upon Tom who is putting in the effort to construct the daily warm ups.

In the rehearsals, we looked at incorporating the dog into the piece more so and giving more of a reason for his appearance. We worked on some text Tom had written, we divided the lines up to suit each character and figured out spacing of the scene and how to texture the words and build the text. We looked at all saying words together, repeating words after one another and varying pace. I feel that layering the speech is a great idea as we want to make the dialogue as interesting as possible and the dog sections of text are the most serious and it is because of this I think we need to make an extra effort to make the text as interesting as it can be.

The text itself focused upon the back story of our first encounter with the dog and it helped me to get an understanding of our relationship with the dog, allowing me to interweave this factor into my character’s backstory. I think that the differing opinions which surround the dog are interesting and well explored within the text. I have decided that my character would be reluctant to take care of the dog because it required all of the friends to share the housing of the dog. My reasoning for wanting to let go of the dog has therefore become apparent, as I have decided that my character would not be allowed to house the dog in her family home. This idea sparked from one of the lines which states ‘I’ve never really liked dogs’ as well as a previous text which stated that my characters mother did not like them either. In previous rehearsals, whilst I have been willing to go along with it, I had felt that my character wanting to kill a dog seemed slightly radical, especially seen as we were moving from the idea of this being a dare. However, the text that we now have provides more reasoning for my characters desires to be rid of the animal. Therefore, I feel that we made progress within this rehearsal.

6th June Today when I arrived I walked into a very hostile environment as members of the group were arguing about the class warm-up and not treating each other with respect. Lacking commitment to warm-ups which are often prepared by Tom is a reoccurring theme. I don't understand this as he puts effort into tailoring the warm-up to benefit each individual based upon feedback we are given. I feel that everybody should engage in these warm-ups to the best of their ability, I do however understand that several of my peers have concerns which they regularly self-manage. To try and defuse the argument I made sure that I was present within the space so that I could engage in Tom’s warm-up. I started individually warming up and then myself Tom and Beth reconvened to look at warming the voice.

We later had a discussion with Hayden as a group in order to leave all of the negativity out of the rehearsal room. This was needed and I'm glad that he spoke to us because the energy of the room previously was not good to work in. In future I will continue to do what I can personally to defuse situations. There was tension throughout the day but it was nothing too disruptive, this should however have to be the case.

We then took a look at a duologue written for myself and Megan by Beth. The text as very literal in looking at killing the dog and therefore after discussion with Hayden and Beth, Megan and myself came up with some text. Initially we wrote something which was too wordy and not concise however I then went on to jot a couple of things down that I felt were appropriate and Hayden liked what I had drafted so we have added and edited the text. Although I struggled to get started at first with rewriting something appropriate for this section, once I more of an idea of the aim of the piece I managed to produce text.

Both Beth and Tom had written pieces of text for the dog appearances so we all looked over these and divided the lines between ourselves. And as with the previous rehearsal we played around with layering the text by using our voices. Later in the day we looked at creating a command/dare song which we wanted the audience to engage in. I had the idea of using a structure like that of the children’s song ‘Superman!’. We worked out a tune and then started to write commands for the song and then decided to move on and utilise the time we had left meaning that we would write the rest of the commands in our own time. We then went on to listen to and learn the anthem which Gabi had written, we were all given harmonies. And finally we finished off the day by looking at Angela’s song and adding lyrics to it.

I feel that a lot was covered in this rehearsal and I believe that we utilised the time we had.

7th June We started the morning by looking over individual tasks that needed work, if we were not required by Hayden. I decided to look over all of the texts I had written edit them to make sure that they were at a good standard and I made any necessary changes. I then went on to edit mine and Megan’s duologue slightly which I asked to read to Hayden. The duologue does not have any dialogue between the characters, I didn’t feel that I needed any when writing it as a lot of what is said explains the thoughts and feelings of the character’s towards each other as it is. However Hayden is unsure whether it needs interaction between the two character, this is something that is still being toyed around with.

During lunch time Megan painted me as a goldfish this was for the projection that we will be using. Beth then took several pictures of my painted face so that they could be added to the slideshow which was being created to run alongside the performance, these pictures being specifically for Beth’s fish-eating dare. Originally, we had planned to have video footage running with the performance, however this was not sorted and with a week until the show it was decided that we would have purely still images accompanying the performance. It is disappointing that we will not be meeting our original intentions due to a lack of organisation, however still images will still add to the piece.

In the afternoon, we ran through all of the musical numbers and then did a full run through with a running order that Hayden had formatted. The run through was disjointed as we were all adjusting the order, however it was good to do a run though as it gave an indication of how well we know the piece and our sections, as well as giving us the chance to rehearse things that we hadn’t been over in a couple of weeks.

We had production meeting after the rehearsal where we discussed the most pressing issue- a technician. I had much interest at first which then turned into no response from CDC Productions when contacting them within the initial few weeks of this process. Therefore we turned to technicians from the Institute who had later let us down. The next step from the production meeting was to contact Matt and ask if he know anybody who would be able to help. Due to its urgency I saw fit to take charge of this.

8th June This rehearsal started by looking over individual sections with Hayden, I got to go through my projectile vomit sketch. I found that it really helped to go through it one on one because I have started to find the fun in it more. I had also been particularly worried about the audience interaction aspect of the sketch as it relies quite heavily upon this, yet after running through it with Hayden I found that I was becoming more comfortable and confident with it. I feel that it has been a difficulty in rehearsal because you can never plan on what the audience member is going to do or say therefore there is no one way that you can rehearse the piece. Practicing the sketch and envisaging a variety of different responses from the audience member is the only way I am able to be well equipped for the show, therefore this is what I will continue to do.

We later went over Beth’s fish dare and we looked at the way in which we could integrate our raps. Hayden placed me at the back of the room for Beth’s rap so that, I could run forwards and enter with a fish hat on to start my rap. I need to print and cut out a goldfish to stick onto the front of the cap that we have sourced and I will be putting this on whilst I’m at the back of the stage. We incorporated Beth into my rap so that she now joins in at the end of some of my lines which adds more unity to the piece. I also rap and gesture to Beth at times, for example when I speak of ‘slithering down her windpipe into a big black hole’. There were only minor changes made to this rap section however I am feeling more confident with it and I feel that it looks more unified and clean.

I had to take a short time out of this rehearsal to sort a technician for lour performance. This did not hinder the company however as we were still working individually at this point. I managed to contact Matt and it turns out that CDC Productions had been in contact with him, because of this I sourced a phone number and agreed a price of £100 with the company, which was a reduction on the usual the of £150. Whilst expensive, we had the budget for it and the company would fulfil all of our technical needs, therefore I made the decision to confirm them.

9th June We spent our rehearsal polishing the material and eventually running it in an order which allowed us to see how much more work is needed over the weekend. Hayden was content with the work in this rehearsal which meant that rather than having to create more material over the weekend, we would use the time to learn lines so thagt we would be completely off script for the coming week.

Lunch time we started flyering in Colchester town for 30 minutes, splitting into sub teams to cover the area. It was difficult, especially as we faced regular rejection, however I managed to hand out nearly all of my flyers. Whilst I was well prepared in the sense that I had plans as to where I wanted everybody to spread out and cover, I felt that some people were not within their comfort zone and therefore didn’t try as hard as they could have. This seemed unfair for those of us who tried hard, if I was to do this again, it is an issue which needs to be addressed.

I had put out posters within my spare time also, and I know that everybody put posters out, yet I’m not sure all of the allocated posters were rid of. To progress, we all need to be putting in as much effort as each other, otherwise the performance will not be a success, this applies to the most simple tasks- publicity included.

Read-through

I had only experienced the work of John Godber through ‘Bouncers’ which I had performed several years ago as a BTEC student. I had no idea of the radical and far reaching impact his work has had on modern British theatre, placing him alongside figures such as Ayckbourn and possibly even Pinter as one of its foremost exponents.For me understanding the theatrical climate in the UK at the time the play was written was essential as it allows you as an actor to understand why the play was written. The play was written in the late 80′s with unemployment high in the UK, under the rule of Margaret Thatcher. Inequality was a huge factor of the society at the time and I feel this inspired Godber when writing Teechers -“Margaret Thatcher’s most important long term legacy is likely to be the huge rise in equality that she caused, the widening of income differences between rich and poor that took place during the 1980s is the most rapid ever recorded” (Guardian, 2013). Godber tended to write about real life situations involving ‘real’ type characters and I think this results in his popularity. When asked by the ‘The state of the Arts’ why his plays such as Bouncers are still relevant he replied “ I guess because they are the truth” (thestateofthearts.co.uk, 2015)

I was amazed at how fluid the language was once we began reading the script. Our director had told us that the author has written into the play the concept of updating and localising the language. This gave us a far clearer run at establishing meaning and subtext from the outset. We quickly recognised that the piece was a ‘play within a play’ so multi rolling would be involved. The director quickly pointed out that one of the main aims was to ensure that each character we would be playing needed to be clear and show contrast. As an actor this challenge was exciting.

Casting

Outlining of concept

We were called for our first ‘production meeting’ with the Director Alex Norton. The directors role within a production ranges from casting, directing and assisting the actors- “ You will work with actors, casting them for the parts, advising them on characterisation and generally preparing them for the public performance” (Mccaffery, 1988. Pg 7). The director makes it clear that he wants us to fully understand the concept of the piece and asks us to all make individual notes about our own initial thoughts about the play. He then gives out the parts and again, asks us to make notes on our feelings and ideas about the characters we have been given. This was hugely beneficial as we could then have a discussion between the cast and talk about our different ideas for set design, costumes and music. I am cast as Mrs Parry and Kelly Marshall, I understand that I am going to have to make decisions on the characteristics to ensure they are completely contrasting and fit in with the context of the play. 

Week 3

1st / 2nd Feb

Production Roles assigned

The director decides to give out production roles to each cast member, these include; Assistant Director, Head of Props, Head of music, Head of Costume and Script Editor. This ensures that all roles are done properly and nothing is missed. We decide there will be a production meeting once a week so we can update each other on where we are up to and make decisions on any changes that need making.

Week 4

8th / 9th Feb

Initial blocking

We begin to block the first couple of scenes, the director tells us he would like us to enter the stage through the audience as this will give the audience the feeling of involvement and set the ‘school hall’ type scene. The director reminds us that the piece is a play within a play, so keep in mind that the different characters we are playing need to be clearly different. Improvisation exercises and ‘hot seating’ which involves the actor being asked questions as their character, helps us build up the character and add layers to the performance.

Week 5

15th / 16th Feb

Scene Blocking/ Direction given

We begin with the first scene and start to block it. Different members of the cast are able to give their own ideas and the director talks us through his decisions. The director speaks to us about how a more experienced actor should be more aware of the space they are working in and others around them. “Good actors are aware of the space and time within which they are working and just how strong an impression they need to make on it” (Harrop, 1992. Pg 46)

Week 6

1st / 2nd March

Scene blocking

We continue with blocking the scenes, the cast are becoming more comfortable with their characters and start to understand the main ideas of the piece. Often ideas are put forward by members of the cast, we discuss them and try them out. It is much more effective to get up and try ideas out rather than just discuss, things may not always work but at least we’ve given things a go - “One can read all one wants, and spend eternity in front of a blackboard with a tutor but one is not going to learn to swim until one gets in the water just so with acting” (Mamet,1997. Pg80). I always keep in mind my relationships with the other characters in the piece and how I should be interacting with them on stage. The director asks us to use our character names out of rehearsals so we get used to ‘thinking’ like our character.

Week 7

8th / 9th March

Set Discussion

We discuss what type of set we would like, what we think will work and what is needed to make sure each scene is clear for the audience. The stage manager notes down any changes we make and asks if anyone has new ideas. With discussions always being so open, we are constantly coming up with new and creative ideas. We decide in this meeting that we want to include a ‘prop box’ that will hold simple pieces of costume and props such as a laptop bag for Mr Nixon and a floral blazer for Mrs Parry. Each time we change character we go to the box and use the relevant piece of clothing or prop. This is done in full view of the audience to enhance that ‘school play’ feel.

Week 8

15th / 16th March

Improvisation exercises/ Character recap

The director introduces a improvisation game which allows the cast to think on the spot in character. This helps build each character and make them more believable. I think doing these exercises throughout the rehearsal process is absolutely vital in ensuring that the characters are as detailed and believable as possible. The director encourages us to have group talks in complete character, this helps us to think like the character and really understand their behaviour. I know that as an actor having an ‘objective’ is vital as it gives you something to focus on and helps you think like the character as stated in the book written by David Mamet- “We know what we want, and, therefore we know weather we’re getting closer to it or not, and we alter our plans accordingly. This is what makes a person with an objective alive, they have to take the attention of themselves and put it onto someone else” (Mamet, 1998. Pg 74).

Week 9

22nd / 23rd March

Further scene blocking

We work our way through the piece, blocking each scene. We are constantly discussing between ourselves and the director what we think works and what will have the biggest impact on the audience. With the piece being a play within a play, multi rolling is involved. One of the main aims to is to ensure that all character changes on stage are clear for the audience. At first I struggled with my physicality so decided to choose two very different ‘looks’ for my roles. With my first character, Kelly marshall I have a hunched over, closed type body language. She is a shy girl so this physical appearance adds to that. With my second character Mrs Parry she is loud and confident so body is always very open, big arm movements and a lot of contact with other characters. The director speaks often of ‘actions’ which basically means understanding your characters goals and relationships within the play. I think it is best to keep the aims simple and most importantly achievable. “ The action has always got to be simple, it can't be accomplished” (Mamet, 1997. Pg 73).

Week 10

29th / 30th March

Production meeting

We have a production meeting discussing where everybody is up to with their production roles. The director is absent from this meeting so as Assistant Director I step into lead the meeting. I go through each role such as head of props and costume and ask if things are all up to date, talk about any problems and ask when they think everything will be completed. I also ask if their are any scenes that people would like to recap on. We decide to go over the opening scene as it is a while since we have rehearsed it, the run of the scene goes really well and decide to add music. We feel this adds to the impact on the opening of the play.

Week 11

5th / 6th April

Meeting with Costume Department

We try on our costumes, ensuring everything fits correctly and everybody is comfortable enough and able to move properly. We make sure that any extra costume that will be kept in the prop box is also ready and fits.

Week 12

26th 27th April

Finish blocking/ Recap

Finish blocking scenes, we tidy and recap any sections that feel needed. After each scene we recap and ensure that everybody is fully comfortable with the scene.

Week 13

3rd / 4th May

Repeated Full runs

The director has instructed us to perform two full runs this week. This allows us to get a feel for the real thing and if their are any problems we can deal with them and make sure they don't not happen on the final performance. The full runs go really well and make the cast feel ready to perform, no lines are missed and it is full of energy.

Week 14

10th / 11th May

Final Dress runs

Everything is complete and ready. Costumes are finished, music and lighting are set and rehearsed and everybody is feeling completely prepared. 

Week 15

PERFORMANCE AT ST. GEORGE’S HALL

Overall the show went absolutely brilliantly. There were no errors with the technical side and the performance itself went without problems. We received amazing feedback from audience members. I am told by an audience member that the comedy elements of the piece were excellent and that my two characters were always extremely clear and easy to understand. They say the contrast between my two characters was brilliant and showed outstanding technical acting skills. I was also commented upon my accent and physicality.
