Tollense, an original serial romance by Dannye Chase, Chapter 1

A history professor falls in love with his best friend, a 3000-year-old vampire.

Chapter 1

1993

Professor Liam Beyer was born a decade after the deaths of the last soldiers to fight in the US Civil War. Thus, he was not expecting to meet a Union Army veteran in his 4 o’clock symposium on the Battle of Antietam.

Liam noticed the man as soon as he walked in, and not just because it was odd for a member of the public to show up for a faculty lecture at the university. No, the man caught Liam’s attention because he was distractingly handsome. Literally, Liam was distracted enough to drop his pen onto the overhead projector, causing a giant shadow to loom over the map of Maryland on the screen behind him, as if a third army had materialized there in a dense offensive line.

The man was of average height, with a slender build. He had dark hair in a short, modern cut and wore a pair of jeans and a white t-shirt with a faded label. He looked like he might be thirty, which was about the age Liam was, and so Liam did not immediately assume that the man had seen action in the Civil War. But there was something faintly strange about him, just in the way that he walked, light on his feet like a dancer, but stepping firmly, without a dancer’s well-practiced grace.

“General Lee,” Liam continued, in a slightly strangled voice, “of the Confederate Army, was, of course, outnumbered, but the battle was Union General McClellan’s to lose. Had he understood how superior his force was, had he taken more risks, he might have been able to deal a decisive blow to Lee’s army as it retreated. In fact, McClellan’s performance at Antietam was part of the reason that President Lincoln later removed him from duty.”

Liam put up a transparency of a white church with peeling paint, standing alone on a grassy rise. “On September 17, 1862, 7,650 soldiers died at Antietam, making it the bloodiest day for Americans in history. Two days later, a man named Alexander Gardner took some of the first widely-seen battlefield photographs of dead soldiers. Some were awaiting burial, and some were still lying where they fell. It was very difficult at the time to take photographs of battles themselves, as the technology involved careful treatment of glass negatives, and that was nearly impossible under battlefield conditions. But the dead do not move, and these photographs were so clear that when displayed in New York, family members recognized their fallen sons.”

Liam put up a transparency of one of Gardner’s photographs, young men lying on the ground in an oddly perfect line. The unknown man looked away.

Liam had grading to do after his symposium, but he walked to the campus union to grab a sandwich first. He was definitely not expecting Handsome Unknown Lecture Man to appear out of the crowd and drop into the seat opposite him. Liam was very proud that he did not choke on his bite of ham and swiss.

“I hope you don’t mind,” said the man. “I enjoyed your lecture. My name is Kurt.”

Liam put his hand out to shake. Kurt’s touch was faintly cold. “Liam,” he said.

Kurt cocked his head slightly to the side, as if assessing him. “I know. Liam Beyer, 27, assistant professor of history, specializing in battles. Is Antietam your favorite?”

“Um— one of them. I did my dissertation on it. On McClellan, specifically.” Liam felt slightly odd about the fact that this stranger knew who he was, but of course, it was all publicly accessible information. “Are you a Civil War buff?”

“Somewhat.” Kurt leaned back in his chair. “Antietam, god. I remember Bloody Lane— that’s what they called it after. The road was sunken in because so many wagons had gone by over the years. It was like trying to fight your way out of your own grave trench.” Kurt spoke with a faint accent that Liam could not place, something that seemed to shift from one place to another.

“You talk like you were there,” Liam said, smiling. “Are you a reenactor?”

Kurt gave a sharp laugh. “No. You?”

“I’ve been a technical advisor. It’s nice to meet other people who share my strange obsession.”

“Those pictures you showed,” Kurt said. “Photography is such a bewitching art. Those boys are long gone, but remain ever present in death.”

“You know, the war helped make Spiritualism popular,” Liam said. “It was so hard on the families back home to lose contact with their soldiers, not knowing what happened to them, or when, or where. They couldn’t bear it, and turned to mediums.”

Kurt smiled, and it made his bright green eyes sparkle with amusement. “Have you ever been to a seance?” he asked. Liam shook his head. “Most I’ve been to were quite boring,” Kurt said. “But every once in awhile—”

“That sounds like a good story.”

“I’ll tell you sometime.” Liam’s brain was already far too occupied with how attractive he found this poor man, and that was probably why the sentence sounded more like a salacious promise than it really was.

“So what do you do?” Liam asked faintly, crumpling his empty sandwich wrapper. “Are you a student?”

“Not at the moment. Just a fan of history. Of battles, actually.” Kurt leaned forward a little. “Liam, would you mind if I came to your office tomorrow to talk more? I have some questions and I think you might be the one to help me answer them.”

“I— of course.” Liam told himself that he agreed solely because he liked to talk about history with people, and that it didn’t matter whether or not said people were ridiculously attractive.

Kurt smiled at him again. “Until tomorrow then.”

On his way out of the dining hall, Liam was stopped by a student with a question about an assignment on Gettysburg. “I didn’t want to interrupt your dinner,” she said.

“Oh, it would have been fine,” Liam told her. “We were talking about the Civil War ourselves.”

The student gave him a confused look. “Dr. Beyer— weren’t you eating alone?”

In the end, Liam decided that as he’d never dreamed up a handsome man in quite so much detail before, that the student had been mistaken and simply had not noticed Kurt’s presence at Liam’s table.

And yet. There really was something very strange about the man. Liam couldn’t quite pin it down, just that there was a disconnect between what Liam was seeing and what he was feeling about him. For example, Kurt appeared to be thirty, but Liam would swear he was older. Kurt had looked perfectly natural at dinner, but it had also seemed like he didn’t quite fit in with his surroundings. Like if you’d taken a photograph of him at the table, he would have been slightly too bright, out of focus, or without a shadow.

Kurt’s knock on Liam’s office door finally came around eleven, and Liam was, he realized, far too happy to see him again. At first, nothing about the visit seemed terribly odd. They discussed Antietam again, then traveled forward to the Somme, and then much farther back, Megiddo and Kadesh. Kurt seemed to know less about those battles, Liam noted, but he was quite familiar with things taking place after Thermopylae in the 5th century BC.

It was easy to talk to Kurt, especially about interests they had in common, and as the conversation went on, Kurt seemed to relax a bit, which made Liam do the same. The day before, Liam had thought Kurt moved without grace, but that wasn’t exactly right. Kurt had a different kind of grace, a fluidity of small movements instead of large ones, an artistry shown in the fluttering of fingers while the rest of the man kept entirely still. The emphasis on such small motions seemed to draw Liam in, narrowing his focus away from his surroundings and onto his visitor. But at the same time, Kurt had such an air of other about him, that it was almost like Liam was looking at him through beveled glass, never quite getting the whole image at once.

However, Liam’s sense of ease around Kurt vanished entirely when another student knocked on Liam’s door with a question about an assignment. That in itself was perfectly normal, but during the whole time that the student was in Liam’s office, she didn’t speak to Kurt or apologize for interrupting their conversation. She didn’t give a single look to the chair that Kurt occupied beside Liam’s desk.

When the student had left, Liam leaned back in his chair, trying to fake the calmness that he no longer felt. “All right,” he said, watching his visitor carefully. “You want to tell me why I’m the only person who can see you?”

Robin’s Nest Cafe (part 1)

So, here goes nothing! This will probably have more than one part, but will likely be non-chronological.

Pairings: JayTim, maybe future JayDickTim

Rating: Mature for Language [for now]

Part 1 - Part 2

(1) Hot Chocolate

The first thing to know about Gothamites, is that they are objectively, irrevocably rude as fuck.

It’s not like New York City, where people bustle past without so much as a nod of acknowledgement because they have somewhere to be and don’t have time for pleasantries, or the aggressive shoving on the metro in Tokyo, or God forbid, like Metropolis, where people born past 1930 still tip their hats at passerby.

No, the average Gothamite would see you, without an umbrella, soaking wet, and shake their umbrella off on you on the way inside. If you gave up your seat to an elderly Gothamite on the train, they would sooner say fuck you than thank you. If you tried to mug a Gothamite, they would probably punch you in the face and steal your wallet, because, hell, you’d be the fifth person to try it this week.

And Tim, for all of his “good breeding” and “respectable upbringing” is, at his very core, a Gothamite.

His smile is so wide that he’s baring teeth, and while it doesn’t match the snarl on the face across from him, it’s no less able to convey the sheer amounts of fuck you very much, have a fucktastic day!!

“I ain’t sayin’ it again -” the man bellows, spit hitting Tim’s face and, ew, probably his lips too, “- give me the money inna register ‘afore things get ugly!”

His eyes glimmer with the sharpness of the icicles hanging outside along the shop window, barely sparing the knife shaking under his chin a second glance.

It’s 11 pm on Friday night, and the cafe is still open because Gotham never really sleeps and Tim lives above the shop, anyway. Behind Knife Guy, there’s a few people in line, displaying varying degrees of concern.

(1- was born in a Gotham alleyway, please if you’re going to stab the cashier just do it I’ll pour the coffee myself, 5 - been in Gotham for awhile, kinda worried but Killer Croc smashed my car last week and I just really need a coffee, 10 - visiting Gotham for the first time this weekend-- and the last time.)

Tim looks skyward, praying for strength. There are cobwebs up there he’s never noticed.

“Sorry, the money in the register is a seasonal flavor. But hey, bright side, we’ve just got peppermint mocha back in, so I can ring you up for that instead?”

Knife Guy gapes for a second, squinting at Tim like he expects him to start tap dancing any second now. Tim raises a brow, patient. With a frustrated snarl, the knife jolts forward enough that it clicks against Tim’s nametag, chipping at the edge of the black and yellow batman sticker beside his name, which is his favorite sticker so excuse you.

“Look, I’ll make you a deal. Either you put away the knife and order a peppermint mocha with christmas tree sprinkles, and we pretend this never happened, or we do it the less fun way, with the GCPD. Who are a total buzzkill, by the way, believe me. Your choice.”

There’s an eye-twitch, and a change in the man’s expression that makes Tim’s finely-honed Gotham instincts go “oh damn, here we go”, when someone opens up the front door with far too much strength, the glass rattling with the force of its inward swing. The freezing night wind billows in, the scent of oil and snow filtering through the warmer scents of the cafe. There’s an unceremonious tinkle of the bell dangling on the doorframe, and beneath it stands another man.

Tim stares. Knife Guy stares. One of the customers looks up from her phone, groans long and loud, grabs her triple-espresso hazelnut latte with caramel drizzle, and walks out into the late-November chill.

The Red Hood holds the door open for her, because he’s a fucking gentleman.

The door swinging shut with another tinkle, and there’s a pause filled only with catchy holiday jingles that have been playing over the radio since September. Hood surveys the scene before strolling toward the counter.

“Damn, lemme tell ya, it’s cold as fuckin’ balls out there,” Hood laments, with absolutely zero prompting, rubbing his hands together as though he’d gain any friction through the gauntlets. He stops just short of where Tim and Knife Guy are facing off, the blade hovering threateningly in the air just under Tim’s chin. Hood cocks his head.

“Am I interrupting somethin’?”

Tim takes a quick second to make sure that, if he opens his mouth, his jaw won’t hit the floor, before he replies, “Just regular customer service in Gotham. Hope you’re not here for the money in the register too - We’re fresh out of stock. Moving onto the Winter Menu, you know?”

Hood nods, making what sounds like an understanding hum through the voice synthesizers, “Some people just never check the website. Read you’ve got a mean gingerbread latte on special.”

Tim would respond, except now the knife is shaking to a worrying degree– Knife Guy is scared shitless, because the Red Hood is nearly shoulder-to-shoulder– or, well, shoulder-to-bicep with him, because the man is huge and smells very distinctly of cigarette smoke and blood. Tim would sympathize if he wasn’t having an internal fangasm to end all fangasms at this moment.

In a display of panic-borne, truly ballsy stupidity (unfortunately, also a common trait amongst Gothamites, particularly the ones that rob cafes at knife-point at just the hour the Bats tend to come out), Knife Guy whips the knife to the side to turn on the vigilante.

Hood’s got the knife out of the guy’s hand in an instant– Tim has just enough reflexes to grab the steaming cup of caffeine goodness that’s sitting innocently in harm’s way– and in the next second he’s grabbing the guy by the hair and slamming his head backwards onto the counter, spine bent at an angle that makes the onlookers flinch. A few more scurry out the door. There are other places to get a caffeine fix.

“Look here,” Hood growls, No-Knife Guy going cross-eyed as the knife points straight at his nose, “I ain’t lookin for a side of stitches with my candy cane hot chocolate with heavy cream, ya feel me?”

Mr. No Knife squeals.

“P-Please– I’m sorry, I’ll go! Promise! Just– fuck, l-lemme go!”

Hood’s head makes a minute motion, somehow conveying sheer exasperation despite the helmet (Though Tim can just feel the eye-roll going on). He drags the wannabe-robber up to his feet, though it’s pretty useless seeing as the guy’s knees give out they’re shaking so hard– and, oh dude, gross, that’s definitely a wet spot in the front of his jeans there. Tim’s nose wrinkles. He better not have to mop that up.

Hood pays the fact that he’s basically holding up all the man’s weight one-armed no mind, dragging him to the front of the shop. The bell chimes merrily as he gives the guy a literal kick in the ass out the door. The guy lands face-first in dirty, oily, Gothamy snow. An eight year old kicks him as she walks past, hand-in-hand with her father to the nearest bus stop. That Uptown Gotham charm, amiright?

“You’re just lucky I’m feeling the holiday fucking spirit right now– Plus, no offense,” a quick appraisal, “you’re kinda pathetic.”

And then Hood closes the door.

But he’s still here.

Tim looks around the shop. Apparently, at some point in the last 2 minutes, the rest of the customers have decided that they really don’t have time for the typical Bat-dramatics today and fucked off to another cafe. Tim should be more upset about the loss in business than he is, but that’s the furthest thing from his mind.

Because the Red Hood (It’s him, it’s really him) is still standing there. In the cafe.

With Tim.

He glances down at his chest to make sure the knife isn’t actually buried there, because the possibility that he’s died makes more sense than the Red Hood standing in his cafe, surrounded by a horrific mash-up of dollar-store Hannukah and Christmas (because his family is technically Jewish even if they didn’t celebrate jack shit, and Steph took the shitty plastic menorah on top of the espresso machine as a challenge).

“Um,” Tim remarks, scrambling for the words he wants to say to one of his childhood heros, “So, can I get you something? I feel like I should get you something. Cause I mean. This is an establishment that supports vigilantism, okay? Robin’s Nest cafe, at your service. At least a 10% discount, just like military. Just putting it out there.”

Right. So where is that knife again? Can’t speak if he doesn’t have vocal chords.

The vigilante makes a sound through the synths in his helmet that must be a chuckle, shaking his head in amusement. He moves back up to the counter with movements far too fluid for someone of his size, and Tim swallows a bit as he’s forced to look up (and up) at close proximity. Wow, the helmet is something else– he’s itching to get his hands on it, take it apart and see all its functions and how it was made.

“Gotta first aid kit?” is almost lost to Tim, he’s so mesmerized – he thinks distantly that he’s probably looking a little manic, cause he’s running on caffeine and spite, and people have always told him that his tendency to hyperfocus is unnerving on a good day – but then the words click. He frowns.

“Yes, we do? He didn’t get you with the knife, did he?” he questions, eyes raking up and down Hood’s leather jacket for any telling rips or tears.

Hood tuts, reaching up to tap at his neck, “Nah, not me, but you’re ‘bout to need a new white shirt.”

Tim mimics the movement on autopilot, clapping his hand to the side of his neck and feeling the stickiness there. His heart jumps for a second as he pulls back his hand and sees enough blood there to wonder how he’d missed it.

“Oh. Damn.”

And that’s how, five minutes later, Tim’s got the doors to the cafe locked and finds himself sitting in the break room with the Red Hood dabbing at his neck with a cotton swab.

If he finally manages to overdose on caffeine tonight, he thinks he could go happily.

Hood’s so close that Tim’s 100% sure the vigilante can feel his heart trying to burst all his arteries by its sheer pumping force. He’s getting light-headed because he’s trying not to be creepy and do something like smell the the tall, buff guy with gentle hands (Cause, God, somehow the scent of cigarettes, leather, and gunmetal just work for him) and has thus forgone taking any deep breaths.

“Lucky you, s’not deep,” are the only words either of them has said since he plopped down on the table. Tim hesitates for a second, watching Hood close the first aid kit and step away, before he clears his throat.

Courage, Tim. Come on, you’re from Gotham.

“So. Thanks. For all that, I mean.”

Hood shrugs.

“Eh, there are worse ways to start the night. Plus, it’s way warmer in here than out there. Wasn’t kidding when I walked in– was gettin fucking blue balls out there, and not even from anything fun this time.”

Tim lets out a surprised laugh.

“Oh? Well, I think I have a way to warm you up.”

There’s amusement in every line of Hood’s shoulders as he tilts his head, becoming increasingly intrigued by this particularly bold civilian. When he speaks, there’s a definite purr there, mechanized though it is. Something prickly hot shoots down Tim’s spine, and he has to fight down a flush.

“Yeah? You got something in mind?”

Tim can’t help but grin. “Oh, I’ve got just the thing.”

“Let me guess. Hot chocolate with heavy cream?”

“Shut your shittin’ mouth, Dick.”

“…. It’s got candy cane flavor in it”

PSA About Blog and Life (You can ignore the life part.)

Okay hey ya guys! It’s me! Cinbunli or more known as Mod Lea, and it’s been awhile. A month technically in not posting, but then again I didn’t really do that in the month before as well, excluding the drawing request I did, which is something I will talk about within this PSA, which I should point out the main thing about this PSA is to tell you that I am refreshing this blog for myself, as in redecorating the way my blog looks and resetting my requests to have a fresh start, though everything I have posted beforehand will still be up.

The reason why I am doing that is because I need a new refresh on this blog, as I haven’t been up to date with it, since the moment I had got this and I only really did actual requests once in a blue moon, whether it be because of my course or my own dyslexia and other reasons, and this blog now gives me anxiety at times when I look at the requests given to me, and even though looks actually quite little, I can look and see that some of them mostly the scenarios have been there for almost a whole year since I started and haven’t got around to them, and I didn't want to feel that way anymore and start fresh. I want to reset so I can focus more on actually fulfilling the requests given to me instead of not worrying about ones I haven’t done yet, which holds me back. While I say that though if there was a request you were looking forward to or still want please request it again, as one of the reasons I am doing it is because seeing as some of them are requested about a year ago, I don’t know if the person requesting it is still around or still want it. Also, I say this refresh includes all requests, even the 100 followers drawing request (which I didn’t get much response off and I am planning to re-post it for next month instead, starting from the first of September.) and match-ups, not just scenarios and headcanons.

That was my main point and I hope you understood what I wrote above, but it is something that I need to do for myself, the reason it caused me anxiety and for other reasons. My life has been quite eventful recently since Canada, and I decided to become a hermit for the past month because of it, just listening to music or wanting to sleep, not really leaving my house unless I had to, and if you don’t want to know then you can ignore the next paragraph about it, but it is something that has affected me and I have kept in for a long time, and I need to let it out and it seems this is how I am doing it, and I know many will not care or if a bunch of strangers see it, but I’ll put it under a cut.

Okay so if you read the posts that I made in Canada (Excluding my Amino app I was planning on creating, which I did, but found I can’t do anything with, which is not the point.) I have made post about being homesick or being sad, and it is nothing to do with Canada, Canada was lovely and amazing and I was so happy to see my friends over there, but during that trip I was sad and there were a couple of reasons for it, such as my mental illness, but there was one that made a bigger impact on me. Now some may not believe it or think I am crazy for believing this way for what I am going to write about it, but it is what I believe. First things first I am a Christian, I have always been and I officially chose myself to be Christened, due to an event that happened, which people make fun off and don’t believe, which is in there right to, but it was one of the deciding factor of my life, which in fact got me closer to my dad, as something spiritual happened to him as well, but I won’t get into that, but religion and in fact supernatural stuff (though not directly at me, so I can’t really say.) has happened to our lives. For example my family had a fire, the moment my father decided to try and take a religious course to become a priest, and it was in the space where my dad had all his bibles, which ended up burning in the fire and a cross was etched into a wall, which we believed was attack from the devil, and the only reason it didn’t go further was because was because of God setting it up for it to happen on the day all of us was at home, so we could stop it from burning our house down and killing our dog, but anyway… I am a religious and superstitious person and while I was in Canada (And I was in Canada for 20 days) whenever I went to sleep, almost and I mean almost every night I dreamed I dreamt of my dad dying and not be there for my return. Now before Canada and during my the last two months of my BA Honours course, my mum had been trying to get my Dad to go and see a Doctor, but seeing as he was afraid of them, he mostly always refused, and it got to the point that actually once I was in Canada. Mum finally forced him to go, but I didn’t know till until after a couple of nights, when I began having these dream, and that I found out that while I was gone they had diagnosed him with Cancer, he wasn’t producing any blood, and his heart had gotten weak, but my mother said that everything would be fine, until three days before I left, and I got a skype call saying that my dad might die that night, luckily in the end it wasn’t the case, but during my dreams I felt like it was God trying to tell me that this was going to happen, and I quickly got a flight back to see him. (Doing so finding out more about my family that I never knew about before, which made me write the post that my family now seemed like the family tree of once upon a time, because now it has, but to simply put it I thought I was the youngest of four children, only to find out it’s now seven and it could of been ten if three didn’t die.) He’s at home now, but we’ve found out he has months to a year to live, which is better seeing that he could have died on that day and I could not have been there, but because of that it caused me to become a hermit and hide away from the rest of the world for a while, but I am slowly coming back, and it’s one of the reasons I want to do a refresh on this blog, so I have somewhere I can go to and occupy myself, but not feeling the anxiety of the requests I believed I failed in doing, while I try and look for a job, while also taking care of my father. Anyway sorry for me venting in this part, but thank you to anyone who reads this, I just needed to get it out. I don’t know if any of this is readable, so yeah. Anyway I am know gonna finish talking.

How to Save Your Favourite Outdoor Plants: Bring Them Inside!

Many of the flowers and plants we grow in Alberta are annuals here. But many of those plants are technically perennials, in other parts of the world. They just really can’t hack those 10-14 days of -30ºC to -40ºC that we get in February. It's only a few days in Central Alberta anyway. They get many more -40 days up north.

We buy these gorgeous flowers in the spring, tuck them into our pots and hanging baskets and flower beds, and then sadly send them to the compost bin come September or October. But we don’t have to. Many of the flowers we mourn when the frost hits (like it has the last couple of days here) are tender perennials. So they would survive through the winter just fine in warmer regions of the continent. Heck, even warmer parts of Canada, like the west coast (best coast). With its growing zones of 7-8-9. It's Canada’s gardening mecca.

I’m not bitter or envious at all over here in chilly zone 3. Definitely not. Why do you ask?

Many of these tender perennials are plants that we could overwinter indoors and set them back outside next spring, bigger and better than ever.

First, it's essential to know which plants are tender perennials and which are annuals. Annuals are designed to grow hard and flower profusely for only one season. They are not going to reward you next year if you bring them in for the winter. Plants like petunias, calibrachoa, and pansies won’t bloom as beautifully next year, so there’s no point in overwintering them.

Plants to Overwinter Indoors

There are a surprising amount of plants you can overwinter indoors. Here is a list of plants that I know you can bring inside for the winter: geraniums, coleus, begonias, impatiens, fuchsias, dracaena, hibiscus, hot peppers, herbs, and most succulents.

I’m sure there are plenty more that you can bring in, but those are the ones I’m most familiar with. A quick google search about your plant should tell you whether it's perennial or annual. If it's a perennial, you should be good to bring it in. This year, I’ve brought my Lemongrass indoors because I rooted them from the grocery store pieces, so I don’t want to let them die. We’ll see how it goes.

Taking Cuttings vs. Overwintering the Whole Plant

There are two main ways to overwinter your tender perennials. You can bring the whole plant indoors, or you can take cuttings to start new clone plants. It depends on the amount of space and how many bright sunny windows you have.

Got lots of south-facing windows and lots of space? Maybe you want to bring the whole pot in.

What are the benefits of overwintering the whole plant? Your plant will keep getting bigger and bigger every year. We used to do this with dracaenas. I don’t know what variety, we never paid attention. But, we’d bring them inside in their pot every fall. Eventually, they got so big that they wouldn’t fit in our house anymore.

We ended up donating them to a local college, and they lived in their science building for many more years. I’m sure they were nearly 15 feet tall by the time they finally died. I assume they died from lack of nutrients, as I don’t think they ever got repotted after leaving our house.

So, if you’ve got the space, and you’d love to have some large statement plants on your patio in years to come, this is a fun way to grow the biggest version of a plant in your neighbourhood. You do have to take a little more care to get them ready for coming inside. I’ll cover that later.

If you have significantly less space, the other common way is to take cuttings from your plants. Most plants can be propagated by cuttings. Propagating involves cutting a little slip of a plant, 4-5 inches of stem from a healthy young branch of the plant, and rooting it for next year. Check the underside of leaves and the stems for pests and remove them if you find them.

Taking cuttings is the best bet if you have a smaller place or less window space. I have done this with geraniums and silver nickel vine this year. I took 2-4 slips from each geranium, trimmed off most of the leaves and have placed them in pots of soil, near a sunny window. The other benefit of this method is that you’re less likely to bring unwanted pests indoors. Which I’m about to get too.

Dealing with Pests

Outdoor potted plants are likely to have some critters living with them. We don’t notice pests on outdoor plants as quickly as we do on indoor plants. Things like aphids and gnats and mealybugs and scale may have established themselves in your outdoor plants.

You may also have ants building a cozy home in the bottom of your pots, entering through the drainage holes, and slugs hiding out under the cool, damp base of containers. There’s probably spiders building safe, dry homes under the rim of your pots, too.

Here’s the thing to keep in mind, PESTS AREN’T BAD.

Bugs are critical to our environment. Yes, they can potentially cause damage to your plants, but we don’t want to rid the world of them, or we’ll rid the world of us too. BUT, you’ll want to deal with them as best you can before you bring your whole potted plants inside.

How to Address Pest Infestations on Outside Plants

First, give all the pots a thorough cleaning. Wipe down all the sides, under the rim, and the bottom of the pot. If it's a bigger pot, you may even want to give it a spray off with the hose before you wipe down with a cloth, brush, or sponge. Check under the rim and the bottom of the pot for pests. Then clean the drip tray too.

Was your plant in a huge pot with a bunch of other plants for the summer? You may want to consider repotting it into a smaller pot for the winter. This will also allow you to give it some fresh soil.

Once your pots are clean, check the plant itself for pests, look at the underside of every leaf.

Yes, every single leaf.

Check the stems, particularly where smaller limbs branch out from the main stem.

Start dealing with any pest infestation you find, however you prefer. If it's small, you may be able just to use rubbing alcohol and q-tips to kill the bugs. If it's big, you might want to try the dish soap method or Safers insecticidal spray (I assume there are other brands, but Safers is what I’m familiar with).

How to Bring Your Whole Plant Indoors for Winter

There’s a big difference between outdoor growing conditions and indoor growing conditions. What follows is the recommendation that all the big gardening sites and books make.

This process should take about 5 days before your plants are fully acclimatized to indoor living. And then, ideally, you’ll want to keep them quarantined indoors for another 2 weeks, away from all your houseplants, to make sure all pests are dealt with and don’t spread to your other plants.

Day 1: Get Shady & Clean

Move the plants you want to bring indoors to a shady spot in your yard. They need to adjust from bright light to lower light levels, so group them all together somewhere that they’ll be in the shade all day.

Start your cleaning, repotting, and inspect pests. Prune back any plants that need it, quite a bit. You can safely take off up to 1/3rd of the total volume. Cut off any browning or dying leave, trim brown tips off of things like dracaena.

Prep a place indoors that you can quarantine your outdoor buddies away from your houseplants. Ideally, it should be easy access to the door, so you can bring them outside.

Got a garage? Perfect!

But, you’ll want to do indoor quarantine somewhere else, because your garage likely doesn’t have enough light to keep your plants happy for 2 weeks, unless you’ve got large windows in it.

Day 2: Garage Sleepover

Bring all your plants indoors for the night. If you have a garage, and some garden carts, or steal your kid’s wagon, set your plants on the cart, pull them in at night.

Day 3: Back Outside in the Shade

Take your plants back out in the morning, to the shady spot, put them back inside in the evening, just before dark.

Days 4-7: Lather, Rinse, Repeat

Repeat this process. Put them back in the garage or house in the evening just before the sun goes down. Repeat this process every day for 3-4 more days. Shorten their outside time by an hour or two every day, until they’re not going out at all anymore.

Now you’re safe to bring your outdoor plants inside to your quarantine space.

Days 7-14: Daily Inspections for Stowaways

Check your plants daily and keep your eyes peeled for pests. Treat as needed. Once your plants have been quarantined for 14 days, and you don’t see any new signs of pests, you can move them to a more permanent winter location, ideally near a south window.

Full Disclosure: I do not do this whole process... I still have successful plants, but they’d probably be even better off, and I’d have fewer pest infestations than if I did this.

Tips For Keeping Your Plants Happy Over Winter

Don’t fertilize

Don’t water too often (check the soil with your finger, but don’t water until it feels dry to a depth of an inch or to your first knuckle.

How to Taking Cuttings for Propagation

If you decided to take cuttings instead, you can root cuttings in two ways:

You can put the stem cuttings in water, and let them grow roots, then plant them into pots.

You can put your cuttings straight into fresh potting soil.

I used 4-inch square nursery pots for my geraniums, and I put a cutting in each corner of the pot. The thing about taking cuttings and putting them directly in the soil is that you need to make sure the soil stays damp until they root. So don’t let the soil dry out, but don’t make it saturated wet either, because that will just cause rot.

I’m rooting my silver nickel vine cuttings both ways. I have 3 cuttings in a pot with soil, and I have a few rooting just in water. I don’t know how the roots are doing in the soil ones. I haven’t checked yet. The ones in water are starting to grow tiny roots.

If you’re doing the water propagation method, be prepared for it to take awhile. Like, a few weeks. Change the water for fresh stuff every few days.

I took the geranium cuttings on October 7. I brought my lemongrass indoors, too, a few days before that. The lemongrass was all in individual pots around the yard, so I dug out all 4 plants and stuffed them all in one pot together. This is probably not ideal, because it means it’ll be nearly impossible to separate them next year, but I’m ok with that.

Anyway, if you haven’t done this yet and in Central Alberta, I’d recommend getting at it ASAP. We had -4 last night, and it started snowing today. So if you want to save them, get started on it today if you can.

If you’ve gotten frost and the leaves on your plant are all brown and wilty already, it might be too late. But, you could try cutting back the dead foliage and moving the pot it inside anyway. The roots may still be viable, and they may come back if you bring them inside.

I've just passed my test. But, the next thing is a car, but the main problem is the insurance... I've looked at companies that offer a smart box which supposedly lowers the insurance, but i'm going to have to be the main driver on the policy and with a box through co-op I was quoted 5000! And as i'm under 18 they wanted it all in one lump sum!! The reason it was so high was because I have absolutely 0 years claims and i'm the main driver. I've spoken to my mum and dad about them being the main driver and me the named, but they both have a car each and are being very stubborn and keep saying they won't be the main driver as they wouldn't be the person driving it the most (I would be). They keep saying this is illegal and called fronting and if anything happened the insurance companies would look for anyway to not pay up. Everyone one at college that I know does exactly what i'm proposing to my parents... They keep saying if something was to happen then they would be the ones not able to get insurance again and therefore would loose their job as they need their car for their job. If I crashed, or the police pulled me for some reason then I would be insured, so what could they do? Do you think my parents are being awkward about it, and what can I say to make them think otherwise? (Someone I know has a dad as a taxi driver and he is the main driver on his car, as well as his own!) If anything unfortunate happens whilst i'm driving, like a crash, how will the insurance company know who's been driving it the most? What would they do?
