💛Smoshblr December Asks Day 9💙
What are your current top 3 favourite songs? (like songs you’ve had on repeat a lot recently or maybe just 3 songs that you listened to today and enjoyed a lot! Whatever feels most accurate to you 🤗🎶)
Bonus: What are 3 songs you think everyone should listen to at least once in their life? 🎧
oh no you've hit me in the autism bone
music is one of my lifelong special interests so i'm biting and killing, losing my mind
current top three on my on repeat are: people watching by conan gray, red wine supernova by chappell roan, and brando by lucy dacus.
three songs that i think people should listen to not for their cultural significance but because i think they're cool: cold water swimming by quiet houses, dead girl walking by jensen mcrae, and ojitos lindos by bad bunny.

Scrapbook 2023 | Pt IV
NGL, a little heated that Tumblr's new editing bullshit has made it so I can't save more than a month at a time, so I guess I'll have monthly ones from now on.
For anyone that’s new to this, this is how I keep track of all of the things that I enjoy and/or create throughout the year. I have literally been doing this since I had a livejournal.
It’s a nice little snippet of my life and helps to organize my brain.
A reminder:
Normal font - Indifferent/Neutral Italicized font - Enjoyed bold font - Loved with an asterisk* - All time favorite (bracketed titles) - Re-watches/Re-reads strikethough - Disliked
Goals are: read 65 books, finish 4 video games, write more than 20 fics or something larger than 20k, and expand on your original novel outline to the point that you START WRITING.

infodump !!
i wanna infodump about my music but not give too much away about my plans!!!! aaaaaaaa!!!!!!!!! AAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!
there’s so much i want to do and so little i have financially available currently. like i need to replace a lot of my audio equipment, actually; first one being my bass amp because it buzzes like a motherfucker, and then my audio processor. also if i wanna start playing shows i need a couple more things for that too.
i also wanna start playing a lot more with the production of my songs but theres so fucking much to explore there and i have no idea where to start, like i really want to figure out synth without spending a whole lot of fucking money just so i can sit there and be bad at it for a long time until i’m kind of okay at it. i also really love the idea of getting real recorded string instruments and stuff for my song, but god my music DOES NOT pay for itself at this point in time, and i don’t currently have a job or any income for that matter.
i’m also finally FINALLY getting back into writing, and it feels so good this time because i don’t fall into a pit of self hatred anytime i write anything anymore. but at the same time i forgot how fucking intense it is, i have a few songs that are just basic skeletons that i have so much more to fill out and i forgot how to approach that. i also completely forgot how to write vocal melodies, and i need to figure that out REAL soon because i guess i got bad at it not writing for several years in a row and i want to have an album or ep written by the time my school reopens campus, thats my goal. and i do have one release planned but LITERALLY ALL IT’S MISSING IS VOCALS!!!
i also forgot how fuckin obsessed i was in high school with concept albums and how much i just wrote out super involved storylines and characters and extra things that would be included??? how was i that creative?? how do i do that again??? mcr made me fall in love with concept albums and i have like two vague concepts in mind currently for whatever i’m doing next but i’m still super clueless on how to approach it.
i’ve also been trying to take extra time recently to get better at my instruments. however i’m super confused about why getting more comfortable playing bass made me worse at guitar. like i started getting better at bass and suddenly my guitar skills are way worse. i want to be good at both dammit lol but i’m working on my rudiments and trying to get better at playing my own fucking songs and figuring out what the hell i’d even do playing a show all by myself onstage.
and i just wanna add on the end here that i had a vague amount of motivation for this summer going into quarantine but the other day cody actually suggested i try to be self-sufficient for a while because finding bandmates you really vibe with is super difficult. and i totally understand that about having bandmates, and i do like having something that’s my own baby, it’s just so fucking much haha as i’m typing all this out i’m like “damn i’m really doing this all by myself!” cody said he might be down to write with me once he’s done writing for sio’s new album and man i just love him so much haha i’m trying to get back on my feet again and i love that this time i’m letting people support me, it’s helping a lot. i really appreciate all the people who have lifted me up since i released my music, and i’m actually surprised at how my music has grown on spotify (even though it probably doesn’t really look like it to other people, but the fact that choke on a joke is on its way to 4k listens is a little crazy to me).
anyways i have just realized lately how much i have to do and i’ve become really motivated by it. and soon i’m gonna have a degree to back me up but i really just want to chase this, especially if i can figure out how to start playing shows by myself. when pipe dreams released people asked if i had plans for even more music and i had to be like “ahahaha i guess but probably not anytime soon! who knows when i’ll be able to force myself to write again!” i feel so much better than that right now and i’m super proud of myself :’)

Starting with the chillwave movement and French touch acts and artists in the late 2000′s, music with a decidedly 80′s influence has been in vogue for the better part of a decade now. Proto-synthwave acts like Anoraak, Justice, and M83 helped start and continued to stoke the fires of the 80′s revival. By the early 2010′s, acts like Com Truise and Mitch Murder began perfecting and popularizing 80′s influenced electronic sounds, and some offshoots of those movements followed with a deadset intention on perfectly emulating those neon 80′s vibes. Outrun differed from synthwave, chillwave, and vaporwave in that the intent seemed to be to recreate those specific sounds utilizing equipment and techniques from that bygone era. Acts like Betamaxx, Lazerhawk, and Miami Nights 1984 created landmark albums and EPs that led to a steady increase in the internet’s thirst for the sounds of yesteryear. Today, we have artists like Carpenter Brut, Gunship, and Power Glove doing things like releasing physical albums, playing at music festivals, and soundtracking apps and major video games. As a result, though, the outrun synthwave movement has also become saturated with people that want to emulate the sound of the 80′s, so it’s become a bit more difficult to find those diamonds. One such absolute precious stone in that rough is Jim Govoni’s project Botnit. Having been a huge fan of his intricate melodies and incredibly punchy and polished work for quite some time, I felt like Jim’s work was a best kept secret that is severely underrated. Having truly considered his work among the best that the entire genre has to offer, I was elated when he agreed to an interview. The resultant conversations that followed were way too long to post, so I’ll stick with just the highlights of my interview with Jim Govoni (Botnit).
Tumblr media
1. What is the story behind the moniker "Botnit"?
It doesn't mean anything as a matter of fact. When I first started making tunes, it was under the name "Bill vs. the World", which was really cheesy electronic tunes with secretly-recorded audio of my friend Bill yelling at video games played over it, honestly: https://billvstheworld.bandcamp.com/ When I started making serious music, this didn't really work out, so I needed a better name. My friend (who later put out synthwave tunes under the name Roburai) and I were regulars at a gym at the time, and developed a fairly strong micro-language. I worked in a few from my past playing video games with my younger sister. The video game Tekken 2 had a fighter named Baek Doo San, this somehow transformed into Nit San Face for short, and when it transferred to Roburai chats, the 'nit' part became a suffix to other words, like Beentnit, Fartnit, and Botnit was just one of those. When it was time to pick a name, he recommended to just take Botnit, so I did.
2. How would you describe your own music?
Tough question, I think emotion is a big part of music, when it lacks it, I sort of sit there and wonder what the hell the point is. I can remember back in 2012 when I started making serious synthwave, that I wanted to be able to make tunes with feelings, to allow a person feel a certain way about a song, without having to force-feed them vocals as instructions on how they should feel. My only real goal was to have a nice little package of 10 songs, or 8 in the case of State of the Art, and have it all sound like it was made by the same guy at the same time, which was difficult as the albums ranged from 6 months to a year and a half in completion time. Obviously you change a little bit over time, so it's tricky. I think all it takes to make evocative music is to let the synths do the talking for you, so that's what I do. I don't crush you with heavily compressed Drumulator kicks and bass arps and upside down crosses, because it's been done already by many copycats and phonies, quite frankly. At the time I started, Mitch Murder was one of the few artists to put lots of old samples in their tunes, and I took a cue from him, speaking of copycats.
3. What are your greatest influences (artists, experiences, weather, etc.)?
Musically Mitch's "Current Events" and Betamaxx's "Interface" were giant influences, as well as MPM Soundtracks, who made some synthwave that has yet to be surpassed in my own opinion (Summer of '84, original, NOT the Flashworx remix). Like a lot of people back then, the movie "Drive" definitely set something in motion for me, but I think it was more about an aesthetic than the two big tunes that came from that film. Almost more important, I used to work at a video arcade in the late 90's, and those experiences shaped a good number of tunes ('Hi-Score', 'Arcade Cowboy', 'I'm Somebody Tonight')
4.  What is your opinion on the ever-changing structure of independent music?
This could go on forever, but all I will say as a main point is that I like how social media helps people get exposure. Bandcamp helped me incredibly, as did soundcloud. But a big problem is that whoever promotes themselves the most wins, they get the most plays, they get the most attention, because they self-promote. I don't self-promote really unless like, I'm trying to raise 100 buyers for a vinyl release for it to be manufactured, and I'll post twice about it. There's a few synthwavers, including one I have met in person, who I feel makes supremely inferior music to me, if I'm to be honest. The guy's very nice, but I think his synthwave is objectively bad - though he has 20 times the followers because he promotes the shit out of himself, nonstop each day, so you can either have 100,000 people come across your music and 2,000 like it, or 1500 people come across you music and 900 people like it, I think I'd take the latter. But it just sort of seems like connections, pay to play (promote), and "what's hot" will always be king. At least in independent music also, you can be successful and not have to look like a model also. It's not a coincidence that somehow the most popular singers all don't look like weathered clock tower keepers, but that is another topic for another time. :-)
5. Does making music pay the bills? Is it more of a dedicated hobby?
Definitely a hobby at this point, I never really had aspirations of it becoming a career, as I started making music when I was 33 years old, and already had a career. I put out albums in 2013, 2014 and 2017, and I haven't actually made any new music since August 2017, and don't really have any plans to make more right now. (I think retiring in 2015 really hurt me). Every now and then I think about breaking the keyboard back out, but I haven't yet, as I don't have such a desire to anymore. I like making the tunes, but it's so unbelievably time-consuming. You could work for 3 hours on tunes and come away with nothing. I simply can't afford that at this point in my life. As for paying the bills, I lucked out this year as a very well-known Twitch streamer started playing my tunes on his streams, and they were added to some Spotify playlist based on him. Revenue from that allowed me to buy a new computer this year after about 9 months of saving botnit money. So I can't stress enough if you're an artist, get your tunes on Spotify/General Digital Distribution if you want anyone to really hear it. Bandcamp is dead, they just don't know it yet.
6. What do you do for a living, and do you like it?
Some of my coworkers know my artist name and look it up from time to time, so I will be careful here. I work as a network engineer a major New England university. Do I like it? I like it when the internet works, less so when it does not. There's a pretty good work/life balance in higher education, a workplace not driven by profits and corporate greed is a great thing, but it's tough - Early in my career we were rolling out wireless internet to buildings that never had it before, like dormitories, or adding it all over a building instead of centrally locating it in a student lounge or something. We were like white knights bringing freedom of wireless computing to people. Fast forward 10 years, and people are upset when they can't watch 4K netflix on their 3 wireless devices simultaneously, and only pulling down moderately awesome speeds that beat anything they could get at home. Wireless went from a privilege to a commodity, like water and electricity, your sewer bill, and some of that shine will never really come back. Some days I wish I ran a taco truck, or was a winemaker or something, but that's no cake life either. Most people don't love their jobs, but you find something you're good at, and you just try to do good work.
7. What are some other things you enjoy about life besides art?
Video games, definitely a part of my DNA, retrogames specifically, Genesis, PlayStation 1, Dreamcast. 90's arcade games (it's somewhat of a secret that I'm actually much more of a fan of the 90's than the 80's). I spend a lot of my time around video games, though it's waned in the last few years as I move on with my life and there's other things that need to be done instead. Sometimes I think I'm less of a video game fan and more of a nostalgia fan. I like dining out, when a new restaurant in my city opens up, I like checking it out, having a fancy cocktail. I like wine a lot, going to Napa Valley on my honeymoon was a great experience, and someplace I can see retiring someday (I'm 38 years old, Jesus). I used to like running, 5k's mostly, but have done a 10k and a half marathon, though I don't run anywhere near what I used to these days. We cook a lot, and go to the Boston Ballet about 3 or 4 times a year, which is a wholly expensive experience overall, but my wife enjoys it very much, and I dig it too, it's a fun night out. I think sometimes I don't enjoy enough about life than I should. I'm approaching middle age now and I've never been out of North America, not that I've had a real desire to, but I need to spend more time enjoying little things that might not register as a real event if a day were to be summed up, just something to be happy about.
8. As a known music fan, what are some of best musical experiences you have had with other people's music?
I don't think I ever told this story, but I used to be a focus group game tester for Harmonix here in Boston. I was a fan of their first music video game FreQuency for the PlayStation 2, and before Amplitude came out, I was Harmonix's forums moderator, so they would occasionally bring me in to test new games. I playtested Amplitude, 2 Karaoke Revolution games, an Eye Toy game also for PS2, and Rock Band 1, all before they were released to the public. I went to the Guitar Hero and Rock Band release parties in Boston, that was a hell of a time. I applied to be a game tester when Guitar Hero 1 was in production, but didn't get the job (the pay was terrible anyway, sour grapes). A lot of the bonus songs in those games were Harmonix employees, so meeting them was really cool, and going to all their concerts in the mid-2000's was a unique thing, special slice of life, something that you can really only do in your early 20's. I even helped a bit with Guitar Hero II forum moderation (I'm listed in the Thank You's in the game credits). Synthwave wise, I can remember being on the third date with my future wife, and playing her Mitch Murder's "In the News" to demonstrate what kind of music I liked. And before that, riding the train to Boston listening to Betamaxx's "Senior Year '84" and "Contra", wondering how the hell me made such cool tunes, and not thinking I would ever make anything like that.
9. Also, what are some of the most memorable moments for you in your own musical journey?
Too many to list, but I'll try: Being a fan of New Retro Wave and them picking my album for album of the week twice, back when they actually answered my emails (though it was 2013, so it might have been the only synthwave release that week :-)) There was a little synthwave meetup in 2015 with Marko Maric, Protector 101 and myself, hell of a fun time. I've seen Com Truise and Toro y Moi live in the last couple years, both big influences, DJ Tiesto and Paul Oakenfold in 2000 and 2001 respectively, though I don't fancy live music so much. Seeing Maniac Synth's music video for Hi-Score was mindblowing to me, and super awesome. Related strictly to my music, I'm pretty selective about a song making it to an album - there's no more than 10 tunes per album, and I want there to be no fillers. For this to happen, there has to be a point in making a tunes where it just clicks, you get an idea to try something, and either by mistake or on purpose, you play it back, hearing this tune for the first time, and you're just smiling stupidly because you realize you just made a new album track. It's an intoxicating high actually. Oddly enough I'm far enough removed from my early pre-Vivid Memories tunes from early 2013 that I'm already nostalgic about it when I listen back. I remember time alone in my apartment when I could bang out 1 song a week, music production was all new, and how somehow synthwave was just more relevant back then.
10. Ever have anything particularly weird happen while touring or playing shows (if applicable)?
I've never played live, I don't really have the setup. I could just get up there and play mp3's and push buttons and bob around like an idiot, I guess. There's a guy in San Francisco who runs a club that's asked me to come out and play so many times I feel bad, but it's 3,000 miles away and maybe I should try it in Boston first. :-)

If you enjoyed getting to know Jim better or already enjoy his work, click HERE to be one of the final 13 people (at the time of this post) to reserve your vinyl copy of a limited pressing of only 100 copies of his 2013 full-length “Vivid Memories”. It’s only $15.99, which is a steal for a wonderful piece of visual art and arguably one of outrun synthwave’s most polished and melodic releases to date. Check out my favorite deep cut from the album, “Innovation“, if you need convincing.

January Releases - I
Tumblr media
As we begin February, let’s look back at all the new music released in January. Here's a recap of the first two weeks.
Beginning the year with new music is a tough job. You need to set the tone, you need to set the bar high, and some of these artists have. Check it out.

At the start of the year - literally, the second day of the year - Michael Millions released his third studio LP. Serving as the follow up to his 2015 Beautiful, Hard to Be King comes in at 19 tracks and features the likes of Francoise Hamilton, Anakin, Angie Doe, Brionya James, Nickelus F, and Melodic. On the production tip, he recruited NameBrand, Nickelus F, JL Hodges, Mitchy Luv, EPTheOutkast, Melodic and Sycho Sid. It’s a solid project with intricate and deep lyrics waxed over smooth and hypnotic beats. It’s a must listen, and officially part of my rotation.
4 - Mila J, January 2018
Tumblr media
Apple | TIDAL | Spotify
Mila J released a project, January 2018, dubbing it the soundtrack of the month. It begins with her looking back at the past year, being part of a relationship that concludes along with 2017. She continues on missing him, trying to move on and then seeing him with another woman. Tables turn, and we see his side in “Missed Call.” That’s a voicemail far too many of us are familiar with. As men feel the heartbreak a little later on, her ex reaches out after they ran into each other in the song before. We hear this mystery man crooning on about missing her and admitting to all his faults. At only 6 tracks, it’s a good project from the songstress. Mila J’s vocals flow beautifully with the acoustic mellow R&B sound. And while it’s a short project that tells a story, could we be seeing a follow up soon? Mila J is always hard at work and is consistent with her music, so it’s not impossible.
5 - Various Artists, One Week Notice
Tumblr media
Apple | TIDAL | Spotify
A compilation project perfectly titled One Week Notice, it features the likes of seven artists who put this project together in a matter of seven days. The 13-track project is brought to you by Jarren Benton, Dizzy Wright, Audio Push, Demrick, Emilio Rojas, Reezy, DJ Hoppa, and Kato. Producer Kato had this to say:
"Where else would you put seven really dope artists and four really dope producers together in the same studio at the same time, and challenge them with creating as much music as possible in a week. That’s something that doesn’t just happen. So, to give fans something new and fresh that would come out of that experience, I think it’s important for hip-hop, period.”
The project is pretty good, offering different flows and content that helps highlight each artist. And the combination of artists is perfect, they mesh well as working together and not overshadowing each other. Everyone involved with One Week Notice has the same goal and know how to work together in order to get to that goal: make some damn good music.
8 - Maxo Kream, Punken
Tumblr media
Apple | TIDAL | Spotify
Maxo Kream finally releases his long-awaited debut album, Punken. The 14-track project features the likes of D. Flowers, Trippie Redd, and 03 Greedo, while produced by Sonny Digital, Ethereal, Tommy Kruise, Teddy Walton and more. Last year, Kream warned XXL his debut:
“I’m about to go full throttle into it, It’s more emotion, it’s more feeling telling the story of Maxo that niggas don’t always get to see. Not just the guns and this and that but really pain the picture. I want to take all my fans on a walk with Maxo.”
And that’s exactly how it plays. A hustler at heart, if that trap life isn’t for you there are many special moments amongst the fuckery. He indeed gives more emotion as he takes moments throughout the album to reflect, and in these moments you see how much his writing has excelled.
“Grannies” for one has a lot of replay value. With just the second track, Maxo flexes his storytelling skills as he tells this story of all of these colorful characters It’s hilarious and real - this is really how “Grannie’s” be. It’s a story of when he was younger and living at his Grandmother’s, and how his relatives were always in and out of the house. There’s always that relative who steals money, you still love them just hide your shit. There’s the uncle that got you high for your first time, and the auntie that won’t snitch on you to cops but sure as hell will tell Grandma. That same auntie who will smoke all your shit, but of course you can’t tell on her. He must have just been sitting around, observing and writing. However harsh or funny (or crazy as hell), those are the times that define you. As he shares it with the world, these are the times that defined Maxo Kream: “Grinding with your family through the struggle / Hold them down regardless.” Take a listen for yourself, and see what the Texan has to tell you.
12 - Sylvan LaCue, Apologies In Advance
Tumblr media
Apple | TIDAL | Spotify
Luckily, I built castles around these wild emotions
I’m always a sucker for concept albums. Rising lyricist, Sylvan LaCue, drops his new album, Apologies in Advance. Conceptualized around the idea of an AA meeting, “but for emotions,” as LaCue explained via Instagram.
“Each song on the album represents an emotion to confront. My goal for this album is to get as many of us to start opening up and talking about some of the issues that we deal with on a day to day basis in an effort to heal.”
The album is brilliantly put together. It’s full of raw emotion, with moments that hit close to home. In an interview with Billboard, LaCue talks about drawing inspiration from Jay-Z’s 4:44 and Lauryn Hill’s Miseducation of Lauryn Hill. It was Jay-Z’s taking accountability for his actions and telling others to take accountability for theirs is what led LaCue to feel like he should take matters into his own hands. Track 20, “5:55,” is actually a response to 4:44. He also discusses how he wanted to make a Miseducation for millennial and focus on emotions rather than love. I definitely see the connection with the group therapy sessions, which as Miseducation it aids in the connection to his audience.
"I’m writing records that are therapeutic for me but I wanted to include other people in the album so that whoever listens realizes that it’s not just about me, it’s about all of us. We’re all going through these things and that’s the overall message. Let’s take accountability. Let’s face ourselves so we can heal ourselves and we can heal other people as well."
Oh, and I see Kanye was an influence as well. As the album is modeled as an AA meeting but for emotions, it makes sense to model "Perfect Imperfections" as Kanye West's "Addiction" - like wait, I know that back and forth.
Apologies in Advance is a well-constructed concept album that takes you through all the feels. Truth weaves in and out of smooth and methodical beats. With his strategic and tangled up bars, it’s so hard not to get lost in the album. Even the interludes are on point! Not will you find who Sylvan LaCue is in Apologies in Advance, but you will find yourself. Best believe that. Take a listen to the 20-track, 9 of which are interludes that signify the 12-step program. I’ve been looking a long time for something like this, two words: heavy rotation.
12 - Bandhunta Izzy, Code Blue
Tumblr media
Apple | TIDAL | Spotify | SoundCloud
The West Baltimore rapper made his debut with Code Blue this month. The tape features the likes of Key Glock, Peewee Longway, Young Crazy, and even his brother, Bandhunta Jugg. Coming in at 13-tracks, the project supplies some heavy hitting beats that are laced with some heavy lyrics. Izzy uses his debut to really branch out and Code Blue is his growth compared to past singles and collab projects he’s been part of. The 21-year old lyricist does have a long way to go, but it’s a pretty good debut.
12 - K. Forest, When It’s All Said and Done
Tumblr media
Apple | TIDAL | Spotify
With all these artists nowadays trying to gain more streams with drawn out projects, my appreciation for the EP has grown. K. Forest released his 5-track When It’s All Said and Done this month and damn. With his first project since his 2016 EP Eyes of Taiga, the Canadian singer switches up his R&B flow from dark and brooding to a much lighter and smooth sound. A bit reminiscent of the 90’s Golden Era. This is no surprise as he has said before, “I just go with what sounds great,” as long as it connects with him spiritually. Well, amen! This new sound definitely works for him.

A few months back, a picture of 2 Chainz and Eminem in the studio flooded social media. However, when the tracklist for Eminem Revival came out, 2 Chainz’s name was missing and had everybody confused - not to mention people already felt some type of way about the features that did make the cut. While the original track featured Phresher, Eminem dropped the remix of “Chloraseptic” now including 2 Chainz as well as new verses from Phresher and Eminem. Amongst all the criticism Revival faced, Eminem used his verse to close out the song and lash back to all those who doubted him.
Not as raw as I was, ‘Walk on Water’ sucks
B*tch suck my d*ck!
Y’all saw the tracklist and had a fit ‘fore you heard it
So you formed a verdict
Eminem continues to go on, but I’ll be covering this track in my upcoming Revival review. Yes, I still will be reviewing the album. I need time to sit down with and really listen, so stay plugged.
This past week has been a big one for joint tracks from Larry June x Jazz Cartier, Robb Bank$ x Kid Trunks, Omari Hardwick x 50 Cent x David Rush - yes, Ghost from “Power” - and Scotty ATL x Zaytoven. Fresh off his critically acclaimed No Dope on Sundays, CyHi The Prynce starts 2018 with a joint track with Jonathan Hay.
Um, Craig David? Hell yeah! After announcing some big news (below), Craig David recruits rising-star GoldLink for his newest release “Live In The Moment.”
Let’s not forget Thelonious Martin’s take on Kendrick Lamar’s on “YAH” and, in a different type of remix, Wale’s take on SZA’s “The Weekend.”
While Rob Markman is living out his dreams as the lyricist, and Hip Hop journalist ,premieres a new single “Believe Me,” Jay-Z released a new segment of his TIDAL exclusive series, “Footnotes: Kids.”
After dropping the sixth installment of his Dedication series on Christmas, Lil Wayne jumps on two tracks with Hotboy Turk and Kodak Black on “F*ck How It Turn Out,” and Zoey Dollaz on “Mula.”
We’ve also gotten new music from Elley Duhé, Nef The Pharaoh, Jon Connor, Tink, and Dave East. Tut tells us to “Keep It Cool while Lloyd Banks keeps it pushing with his At Your Rest series, with his new freestyle “Mighty Healthy.” Speaking of freestyles, catch a preview of Young M.A’s declared "4 minute" freestyle of Gucci Mane’s “I Got The Bag."
After dropping “4everybody,” Lucki recruits 100BandXan to produce his new single “Fools Gold.” Oh and then, he released the Marcus Basquiat-produced “Sports Mode” just two days later. Well, damn. Excuse me, I see you Lucki. We also got joint tracks from Jorja Smith x Stormzy, YFN Lucci x Meek Mill, Omen x Ari Lennox, Nyck Caution x Aaron Rose, and Ryan Hemsworth x NewAgeMuzik.
Jay Rock teams up with Kendrick Lamar, James Blake and Future for his new single “King’s Dead.” The single is slated to appear on the Black Panther soundtrack, alongside “All The Stars” and the untitled Kendrick and Vince Staples joint you can find below in visuals.
With his album right around the corner, D. Lynch releases a new joint where he teams up with Royce Da 5’9 on his latest single “Speak On It.” Listen as the two trade punchlines over a playful beat.
Kali Uchis joined forces once again with Tyler, The Creator, but this time for her very own single. With added helped from the legendary Bootsy Collins, Kali dropped her first single of the year, “After The Storm."

I thought I was hyped when finding out that TDE was would be executive producing the soundtrack for Black Panther, along with its leading single “All The Stars” by Kendrick Lamar and SZA. Now, a new trailer has dropped for the action-packed Ryan Cooler-directed movie. It features a new single from Kendrick Lamar and Vince Staples that will most likely appear on the soundtrack, which drops February 9th. The movie hits theaters the following Friday, February 16th. It was reported this past week that the movie has already broken a record. It holds the No. 1 spot for selling the most presale tickets in the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Jeez. On the TDE note, check out Kendrick’s latest live performance at the College Football Playoffs Halftime Show in Atlanta.
In the past week, we’ve received new visuals from Cozz, Stalley, Nino Man x Jadakiss, and Majid Jordan.
The Black Eyed Peas are getting ready to make a big comeback with their newest release “Street Livin’.”
While Daz Dillinger linked up with Krupt and Snoop Dogg for “Sorry B*tch,” Uncle Snoop released his own visual, “Motivation.”
We’ve also gotten new videos from Cassie, TYGA, SHIRT and Lil West. Like I said, this is the week of joint tracks - and joint visuals it seems like with releases from Future and Young Thug, Carnage, Mac Miller and MadeinTYO, A$AP Ant x Soduh
Quavo and Takeoff hit the stage with Travis Scott at Jimmy Kimmel Live show to perform “Eye 2 Eye.” And while two-thirds of Migos were busy with Travis Scott, Offset dropped a visual for his “Violation Freestyle.” Cool, just keep dropping music and videos while we wait for the releaseCulture II.

A force to be reckoned with for sure, Lil Skies releases his latest effort Life Of A Dark Rose - pick your poison: SoundCloud, Apple Music or TIDAL.
As they have collaborated in the past before, Mari and Jimmy Lit come together again in their first full offering of a five-track EP, Mari Lit: Spotify + Apple Music.
After breaking ties with Fifth Harmony, Camila Cabello has finally made her solo debut with Camila. The self-titled album only includes one feature from Young Thug. She seems ready to be on her own, and flourish in a solo career. Go ahead, pick your vice: Spotify, Apple.
We’ve also seen debuts from Maxo Kream, 4K Tay, Bandhunta Izzy this past week.
K. Forest switches up his sound in his newest EP, When It’s All Said and Done. The Canadian singer shies away from his usual dark menacing style to a much lighter and soft tone. Worth a listen so pick your poison: Apple or Spotify.
Coming Soon...
A post shared by Top Dawg Entertainment (@topdawgent) on Jan 12, 2018 at 2:34pm PST
At the close of 2017, it was announced that TDE’s newest signee would be releasing an album soon, now a title among other details have been revealed via TDE’s Instagram. We have yet to receive an official tracklist, we have received two trailers and the album’s artwork. In an interview HNHH quoted, SiR spoke about his decision to sign with TDE:
"TDE is the first group of artists to really shift things where people have to look at Cali different. I’ve been listening to those cats for a long time. If I were ever to pull influence from anything, I would definitely pull from those cats. Their work ethic and their sound is just so unique. I felt like if I were to go anywhere that would be the best place for me to be able to expand creatively. So I wanted to be around artists who would motivate me to try harder. That’s my biggest thing -- motivation.”
Perhaps we’ll hear the influence of his label mates while still remaining true to himself. Cleverly titled November, the album is slated to release January 19th. Yup, this Friday. Check out the trailers for November, one and two, and stay plugged for more.
And when you think you’re too old for fairytales. While Detox seemed like it was nothing but fairy dust and folklore, it seems that perhaps it’s a bit of nonfiction too. In an interview with ESPN report Chris Haynes, Dre was asked about the mythical album and he had this to say: “I’m working on a couple songs rights now. We’ll see.” Well, while the quote is not exactly concrete evidence, he’s been revisiting this album since he first announced in 2002. There was a rollout, but no output. Several artists have “worked” on music, contributing the album that Must-Not-Be-Named but we’ve only ever seen his 2010 “Kush” with Akon and Snoop Dogg and his 2011 “I Need a Doctor” with Eminem and Skylar Grey. He officially shelved Detox in 2015, announcing that he would be focusing on the soundtrack to Straight Outta Compton. We know he’s always in the studio, but now that we know he’s working on tracks for himself…well, “we’ll see."
Another release next week comes from D. Lynch, who just dropped a new single with Royce Da 5’9 (above). His new album that is set to release this week on Friday, January 19th.
Tinashe is jumping back into music, about damn time. With a couple of teases on Instagram and Twitter, it looks like Tinashe is gearing up for the release of her long-awaited Joyride. Let the rollout begin!
Not sure how I missed this. Craig David recently announced that his seventh studio album The Time Is Now will released on January 26th. I am here for it! While you wait, check out the album’s leading single “Live In The Moment.”
It’s all in the details. As 50 Cent goes on about his Sunday regimen in a new New York Times profile, he reveals that he is currently working Street King Immortal. No release date, just a nonchalant mention: " "On most Sundays, I go into the studio to record my music and meet my producers there. There are no windows so it’s very easy to lose track of time. I could be there six hours and not even feel it. Right now I’m in the middle of recording my sixth album, but it’s as thrilling as my first.” He also unveils other details such as the possible signing of a new G-Unit member, Leonard Grant.
After a successful debut last year with his mixtape My Moment - which made my “Recapping 2017: Standout Debuts,” Tee Grizzley reveals that he has two projects on the way. In an interview with XXL, he revealed that he has a mixtape on the way, Still My Moment, and his debut album will be titled Activated. No exact release dates announced so stay plugged for more details.
Over the weekend, Wiz Khalifa took to Twitter to affirm that his new album is on the way: “Constantly in the studio … Albums never done till it comes out.” He then continues to confirm for a fan that the title is remaining Khalifa Kush rather than its previous title Rolling Papers 2 that was originally announced in 2015.
After last year's Pretty Girls Like Trap Music, 2 Chainz begins his 2018 with talks of a new album on the way. No significant information other than the mention of a "new album.” It might just be on the way sometime this year, maybe bite off its predecessor’s summer release date. We shall see.

In 2014, Nas and the National Symphony Orchestra to reform his ’94 debut (classic) album Illmatic. At the time, the performance was not available to view by the general public. Yeah, I was one of those that scoured the internet for just a glimpse. Now almost 4 years later, that same concert will now be aired on PBS. PBS and Mass Appeal have teamed up to make it possible through Great Performances - Nas Live From the Kennedy Center: Classical Hip Hop. The film will not only cover the 2014 performance but also focus on the rapper’s highly critically acclaimed and certified classic album. Voiceovers by Nas will also shed light on what happened that night as well as talk about the album’s impact in general.  Airing February 2nd at 9 p.m. ET, check out the trailer above.
After Coachella, Governors Ball, and the Boston Calling all announced their lineups, Bonnaroo and Firefly jumps in the mix and reveal their lineups.
Post Malone and 21 Savage broke records with their “Rockstar” joint, which serves as both their No.1 record. After replacing DJ Khaled’s “I’m The One,” for first week streaming record over at Apple, now “Rockstar” holds the longest run at No.1 on Spotify’s Global Charts for 108 days straight. And it doesn’t look like it’s getting knocked out anytime soon. It has been reported that the song has over 650 million streams across the globe. Ayyy, give it up for Posty and 21!!
Last week rumors flew around that mogul Jimmy Iovine was preparing to leave Apple Music. Then just a few days later, he spoke with Variety and shut down those rumors right away.
“I am almost 65, have been with Apple for four years and in 2 1/2 years the [Apple Music] service has gotten to well over 30 million subscribers and Beats has continued its successful run. But there’s still a lot more we’d like to do. I am committed to doing whatever Eddy [Cue], Tim [Cook] and Apple need me to do, to help wherever and however I can, to take this all the way. I am in the band.”
Iovine has no intention of leaving Apple Music anytime soon, "We need Donald Trump here to call it ‘fake news’."
A$AP Mob announced the lineup for Yams Day 2018, which takes place this Thursday, January 18th. Rumors are flying that ASAP Rocky could possibly release his long-awaited album, so stay plugged for more details.
Tech N9ne announced that he will be hitting the road this spring for his Tech N9ne Planet Tour 2018. Starting in Iowa on April 17th, the tour will finish in Colorado on June 23rd. The tour will feature the likes of Krizz Kaliko, Just Juice, King Iso and Joey Cool. Tech will be hitting 60 cities in his nationwide tour, so check the Strange Music site if he’ll be in a city near you. Also, stay plugged for more updates, the tour will kickoff after the release of his 20th - yes, 20th - studio album, Planet.
Justin Timberlake is already having one hell of a 2018. He’s just announced The Man of the Woods Tour, that will commence a month after his Super Bowl Halftime show.
It was previously reported that Donald Glover’s show Atlanta would be returning for a second season. Now, FX released a quick teaser for the upcoming show, which features Sonder’s “Too Fast.” I was very excited because I just love Sonder! And I featured them on my “Recapping 2017: Standout Debuts.” I digress, sorry. Anyway,  the short video gives you a glimpse of the show without telling you too much, which just builds up the most angst for the highly anticipated show. Good thing we don’t have to wait too long, the second season of Atlanta is set to premiere March 1st. For now, check out the trailer.

That sums up this past week in Hip Hop. Come back next week for more.
