Halfway up the stairs, however, he was accosted by a small, scrawny-limbed boy in a too-large tunic and baggy red trousers. He thrust out a hand, shoving an envelope at him. “Message for you, Bhahan.” There was nothing written on the front, and it had an odd bulge in the middle. Vren took it, expecting the boy to leave; he didn’t, scurrying along at Vren’s heels as he ascended to his room on the uppermost floor. “Tell Zahin Zhira it’s a marriage token,” he said. The boy’s eyes went wide. He began to stammer an excuse, but Vren slammed the door in his face and waited until his footsteps vanished, then tiptoed back before vanishing again with much greater stealth. The lie would give Zhira something to laugh about, at least. He’d find out about Vren’s latest private client eventually, of course, but the longer he could keep the Zhirasea patriarch out of his business, the better.
