I feel like Lucy Gray’s fashion sense had an influence on the Capitol. It’s mentioned in the book that she’s wearing makeup, which is notable to Coriolanus and he wonders where she got it from since it was barely becoming accessible again in the Capitol. In the movie one of his classmates mocks what she is wearing, asking if she thinks she’s a clown. It isn’t common to dress like her, but she owns her own style and the Capitol LOVES her. Coriolanus, as he tries to get sponsors for her, makes the case that since she is Covey perhaps she isn’t really district at all, in fact she’s really more Capitol than anything… and perhaps it rubbed off. Perhaps her sense of extra-ness, her fun makeup even at the reaping, her colorful dress at a dark occasion….perhaps that’s one part of her legacy that never truly goes away, even when the name of Lucy Gray Baird is erased from the memories of the people of Panem.

i think my favorite not-explored-enough detail from Mockingjay is how after Katniss breaks down when she is reunited with Buttercup, she falls asleep on her sitting room floor but later wakes up in her bed.
i just imagine Peeta tagging along with Greasy Sae and her granddaughter to eat with Katniss for dinner, and they walk inside and see her laying on the floor, unconscious, her features red and puffy from crying. they see Buttercup curled up near her (but not next to her, since he’s still a little weary from the thrown pillows). the two of them exchange a brief look, and with no words said, Greasy Sae offers Peeta a nod and walks herself and her granddaughter home.
Peeta steps closer to her, noticing that she washed herself and changed her clothes from when he saw her earlier in the day. he silently studied her features. then, as gently as he can, he scoops her up into his arms and carries her upstairs to her room with Buttercup, awoken from the movement, trodding at his feet. he tucks her into bed, wanting to stay but knowing he shouldn’t. he gives her hand a gentle squeeze and goes home.
the next morning, he and Sae show up for breakfast. they don’t mention how her face looks puffy from fresh tears. they know this means she’s finally trying to heal.

I think people miss out on so much of Everlark with the modern way we see romance, ngl.
The softness, the gentleness, the peace they have around one another IS the passion. That is the excitement! And it remains even with the feelings change and morph as all feelings and emotions do. There should be something so thoroughly thrilling finding someone who even when they don't make you happy (because no human being on earth is gonna make you happy all the time), their happyness makes brings you joy. And what that builds is the bond between you is such an adventure.
That is why Katniss is never board or lacking in excitement with Peeta around. He brings out her creative side, her fun and soft side- ya know. The side of her that exsists when she isn't having to fight for her life or work to bring in the next meal day to day. The side of her she WANTS the freedom to explore.
It beats out this hyper emotional, volatile all consuming passion based on nothing other than feelings and emotions ANYDAY. At least in my eyes.

Well, i am basically using my tumblr to post one (1) fanart every decade. Fun. But yeah, recently i've got a big fixation on the hunger games and i just had to get this image for this particular moment out of my head into the world Surpised, how this exact (admittedly absolutely heart-wrenching) part of the whole book series stuck with me - and i have a theory. For starters, yes, Peeta's character is literally my favourite, the bread boy is THE boy ever. So obviously it was quite hard (in a good way) to read the books after his dramatic turn... But omfg that's actually such a genius and gut-punching narrative move!!! Seeing his character in this state really makes you miss pre-brainwashing Peeta and better feel what really MADE his character - and not only his!! Katniss starts to understand it too. She recognizes that she is missing the perspective that Peeta had of her, that she took it for granted at a certain point. Katniss feels, that with this loss of Peeta's idea of her, she doesn't have that "loved" part of herself anymore, that she is indeed just a selfish, pragmatic and cruel person focused only on survival. Even if it's not objectively true - for her it's true at the moment because of how dramatic the loss and how drastic the turn Peeta's character took. AND THEY ARE ALL STILL 17 y.o. CHILDREN OMG THAT'S SO SAD IT'S UNREAL. And genius. I was emotionally destroyed and I wanted to keep reading

Correct me if I’m wrong but through the entire hunger games trilogy, the only person to literally say the words “I love you” is Gale.
Katniss and Peeta don’t ever say these words to each other or to anyone else (like Prim, Mrs Everdeen, Haymitch etc.). I think Katniss at one point in book 1 says she’s sure that Prim is possibly the only person she loves. Peeta says he knew when he was a goner for her in the first book and because they’re “playing” at love, Katniss from then on talks about how Peeta loves her. There’s a bit towards the end of the first book, right as Katniss is thinking of the poison berries, where she talks about Peeta talking about how much he loves her but we don’t actually hear him say it, she just recounts it in her sort of daze. But neither of them say the words “I love you” to each other (or others).
But yet, we know at every turn that Peeta and Katniss love each other and care so deeply about each other. They don’t need to say the words because it’s understood, often through actions and also Katniss’s internal thoughts. We also can tell that they love the people around them, their families, Haymitch, Gale, Finnick etc. We don’t need to hear them say they words “I love you” to know that they love these people and each other. And at the end of Mockingjay, the “You love me. Real or not real?” moment let’s us know that Peeta is not asking her to say those words to him. He’s asking her to confirm something he already knows to be true.

i know this conversation comes up every now and then, but i am again thinking about the lack of organized religion and other preexisting culture in panem outside of the mentioned traditions in each district.
this is really in my mind today because at the start of chapter 5 in catching fire when haymitch brings katniss and peeta through the hallways in the justice building in district 11, she mentions the room prepared for their use has “double doors,” “the ceiling must be twenty feet high,” there are “designs of fruit and flowers cut into the molding, and small, fat children with wings look down at [them] from every angle.”
this passage is strongly reminiscent of a church with cathedral ceilings that are adorned with cherubs, and it also implies that katniss does not know what cherubs are (or really the idea of angels at all for that matter).
considering district 11 is placed in the bible belt, i think this is a really interesting detail, and given katniss’s earlier details about how the justice building is worn and smells of mildew, it highlights how panem is likely using structures that existed before the country itself and how little they know about the world that existed before their country did.
it also shows how heavily united states ideals still influence panem, since though it is said to have “separation of church and state,” our country is very influenced by christian ideals, and these ideals are still somewhat looming over the people of panem.

why is it that 90% of criticism of the song of achilles just boils down to not accepting the conventions of romance as a genre and wanting it to simply be a different book than what it is? because seriously if you can’t get with the fact that the song of achilles is a queer romance story first and a retelling of the iliad second you’re never gonna make a criticism of it that’s interesting to me. if i wanted to read a book that was accurate to the source material then i would just read the iliad. if i wanted to read a queer romance unfolding on the backdrop of a mythical war i would read the song of achilles. if you dont understand the difference between those two things then your beef with that book is just a waste of time to me

We should talk and appreciate more how the Hanging Tree song is forever tied to Sejanus as well.
Written and sung by Lucy Gray for Coriolanus, about the place where Sejanus died. Suzanne Collins successfully tied all three Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes protagonists to what is the most important song in the entire saga, without it feeling forced

There is an endless amount I love the last chapter of Mockingjay and the Epilouge. Genuinely sometimes I feel like I could write a whole novel sized thesis about it and still not quite be satisfied I got to talk about everything.
But I think on this list of my favorite details (which is a mile long) is that Katniss describes her daughter as dancing and playing. And her son as haveing 'chubby toddler legs' that he uses to follow after his older sis.
There could be no clearer way to show to me how happy and loved these children are. How loved and wanted and surrounded by safety and peace. Unloved children don't dance and play like this, children didn't have chubby toddler legs when Katniss grew up. To see these little details paints such a picture of how these children live, and prove their whole point of existence in the narrative from a writing perspective. It shows what the scars were for, what the pain that still lingers paid for. It assures us, even if it's vague, Katniss got to get out of this confusion.
She ended up being able to find and create what she wanted in the freedom she and others paid so high a price for. And while the loss it took will never go away and will always sting, that she got what she had coming to her, the peace and freedom she so craved and spends the rest of her life enjoying along with healing from the cost.

When I did my drawing of Katniss as the Mockingjay, I thought how much there’s a disconnect between Katniss the character and Katniss as the symbol of rebellion - not only in the books but in the way she’s portrayed in the media. So I wanted to draw something where’s she’s overwhelmed by her Mockingjay persona, the pressure that comes with it and the way she’s constantly monitored by cameras. And since it’s Halloween, it now has some horror vibe to it.

Continuing the pattern of drawing Lucy Gray's dresses from the book! The one she wears when Snow first sees her performing at the Hob is described as "acid green," so this is what I came up with
