Hatsune Miku being on the Coachella lineup for this year is amazing and great and so very silly but it’s so bad that tech bros are trying to spin it in favour of their “virtual AI influencers”
No. Like actually shut up?? Do you not know anything about Miku?? She is an art tool. She is a musical instrument. She isn’t being paraded around like she’s some sort of Metaverse influencer.
Stuff like that really grinds my gears. Do your research next time, hm? (looking at you specifically, Wendy Lee from the LA Times.)
#doctorsiren#not art#siren speaks#hatsune miku#this is just one of the many reasons on why I hate tech bros and their use of ‘AI’#their ‘ai influencers’ aren’t even ai#that’s just a buzzword that’s thrown around so much#the article pissed me off dude#I could only think of Jarvis Johnson’s videos about virtual influencers as I read it#DONT DO MY GIRL MIKU DIRTY LIKE THAT

Im not just saying this bc I'm a youtube person who does it.
MAN I wish it was more common for youtuber video essayist to upload their videos as text essays.
I understand it might be born from some idea of limiting views/profits if people just read your vids on a blog rather than watch. But there's so many essays I don't want to watch but would read.
There's a lot of book reviewers too who only operate on YT and not a blog. I get it. But I often can't watch a 2 hour vid but can read 15k words, y'know?
#Yewchube#Yes there's plenty of essayist who do vids which do not translate purely as text or reviewers who go more off the cuff#This is fine! But there's plenty where I just wish I could read it.#But obviously I guess it does in theory affect views. I kinda doubt it? Maybe if you were a HUGE YTber but#I get a few thousand views on my blog a month max mostly on older stuff like lightlark#I can't pay someone for subtitles so having a text version means i can offer that for reading along or as an alternative#And I think many people simply wouldn't watch a vid on a topic but would read an article so it isn't likely taking away from main audience#I would guess most people who read my blog are not actually actively choosing it over my videos. Not a big enough proportion it affects me#Also let's be real: you can skim text to see if the essay is something you vibe with and can't with videos

Imagine being Clodius and this twink poet who is insanely hung up over your sister writes a poem calling you a pretty boy (derogatory), bringing up the incest rumours with said sister, implying the prostitution rumours, throwing shade on your real estate practices, calling you an oral sex enjoyer, and then also somehow saying you have no bitches.
In less than 30 words.
Where do you even go from there. Like the appian way I guess
#I have read so many articles on Catullus 79 and every one of them interprets it as something else so I’ve just listed everything :)#mags babs#category 7 pcp moment

Sometimes I think about how Nightow said something like (and I'm paraphrasing here) Vash only stays "Vash the Stampede" at the end of Trimax and continues to play that role simply because he doesn't know what to do
#Trigun#Trimax#Trimax Spoilers#TrigunBookclub#This man has no fucking idea how to live or how to want to live#Which#Such a fucking big mood my dude#I probably won't be able to finish reading bookclub#But that last chapter makes me SO sad man#I was hoping this reread would reframe it#So many folks that I've shared theories and thoughts with have the opposite view I had at the end of my first reading#But alas#I probably won't have the time#So it shall stay sad in my head#Btw I do NOT have this article source on hand#But I think it's the same one I mentioned on the post I reblogged a bit ago#Hence me chewing on it#Pls correct me if I'm not remembering the gist right

Do you pray for the hostages too?
Yes. I pray for the 110 or so israeli and immgrant hostages assumed to still be alive. And I also pray for the hundreds of Palestianian hostages arrested without charge in Israeli prisons assumed to be alive.
I pray for a ceasefire so that the Israeli hostages are released. I also pray for the end of Israeli apartheid government, so that Palestianians are liberated.
#i recommend reading some articles on the israeli hostages that were released#they each have individual perspectives but i notice online that people are refusing to hear many of their critiques of the israeli state#oftentimes dismissing the hostages of being ''irrationally traumatized'' or ''coerced'' into saying things#now i don't agree with all of them. especially since a lot are reformers. but i think it is important to hear their perspectives#also in general#the sheer number of palestians suffering compared to the israeli hostages is the reason why i think this ''whataboutism'' is ridiculous#you have 2 million people suffering and i am supposed to direct my primary attention to what like 100 of them specifically?#especially considering that there is one side that can end this whole thing: israel#hamas has already offered to release the hostages#in exchange for a ceasefire#and any attempt that the israeli military tried to ''liberate'' the hostages ended up in their deaths#what so far at least 3 israeli hostages were killed by israel (and there was probably more unconfirmed)

Hello ranger’s apprentice fandom can we talk real quick about the stupidest thing Flanagan ever wrote
It’s about the bows. Yanno, the rangers’ Iconique™️ main weapon. That one. You know the one.
Flanagan. Flanagan why are your rangers using longbows.
“uh well recurve arrows drop faster” BUT DO THEY. FLANAGAN. DO THEY.
the answer is no they don’t. Compared to a MODERN, COMPOUND (aka cheating) bow, yes, but compared to a longbow? Y’know, what the rangers use in canon? Yeah no a recurve actually has a FLATTER trajectory. It drops LATER.
This from an article comparing the two:
“Both a longbow and a recurve bow, when equipped with the right arrow and broadhead combination, are capable of taking down big game animals. Afterall, hunters have been doing it for centuries with both types of bows.
However, generally speaking and all things equal, a recurve bow will offer more arrow speed, creating a flatter flight trajectory and retain more kinetic energy at impact.
The archers draw length, along with the weight of the arrow also affect speed and kinetic energy. However, the curved design of the limbs on a recurve adds to its output of force.”
It doesn’t actually mention ANY distance in range! And this is from a resource for bow hunting, which, presumably, WOULD CARE ABOUT THAT SORT OF THING!
Okay so that’s just. That’s just the first thing.
The MAIN thing is that even accounting for “hur dur recurves drop faster” LONGBOWS ARE STILL THE STUPID OPTION.
Longbows, particularly and especially ENGLISH longbows, are—as their name suggests—very long. English longbows in particular are often as tall or taller than their wielder even while strung, but especially when unstrung. An unstrung longbow is a very long and expensive stick, one that will GLADLY entangle itself in nearby trees, other people’s clothes, and any doorway you’re passing through.
And yes, there are shorter longbows, but at that point if you’re shortening your longbow, just get a goddamn recurve. And Flanagan makes a point to compare his rangers’ bows to the Very Long English Longbow.
Oh, do you know how the Very Long English Longbow was mostly historically militarily used? BY ON-FOOT ARCHER UNITS. Do you know what they’re TERRIBLE for? MOUNTED ARCHERY.
Trust me. Go look up right now “mounted archery longbow.” You’ll find MAYBE one or two pictures of some guy on a horse struggling with a big stick; mostly you will actually see either mounted archers with RECURVES, or comparisons of Roman longbow archers to Mongolian horse archers (which are neat, can’t lie, I love comparing archery styles like that).
Anyway. Why are longbows terrible for mounted archery? Because they’re so damn long. Think about it: imagine you’re on a horse. You’re straddling a beast that can think for itself and moves at your command, but ultimately independently of you; if you’re both well-trained enough, you’re barely paying attention to your horse except to give it commands. And you have a bow in your hands. If your target is close enough to you that you know, from years of shooting experience, you will need to actually angle your bow down to hit it because of your equine height advantage, guess what? If you have a longbow, YOU CAN’T! YOUR HORSE IS IN THE WAY BECAUSE YOUR BOW IS TOO LONG! Worse, it’s probably going to get in the general area of your horse’s shoulder or legs, aka moving parts, which WILL injure your horse AND your bow and leave you fresh out of both a getaway vehicle and a ranged weapon. It’s stupid. Don’t do it.
A recurve, on the other hand, is short. It was literally made for horse archers. You have SO much range of motion with a recurve on horseback; and if you’re REALLY good, you know how to give yourself even more, with techniques like Jamarkee, a Turkish technique where you LITERALLY CAN AIM BACKWARDS.
For your viewing enjoyment, Serena Lynn of Texas demonstrating Jamarkee:
Yes, that’s real! This type of draw style is INCREDIBLY versatile: you can shoot backwards on horseback, straight down from a parapet or sally port without exposing yourself as a target, or from low to the ground to keep stealthy without banging your bow against the ground. And, while I’m sure you could attempt it with a longbow, I wouldn’t recommend it: a recurve’s smaller size makes it far more maneuverable up and over your head to actually get it into position for a Jamarkee shot.
A recurve just makes so much more SENSE. It’s not a baby bow! It’s not the longbow’s lesser cousin! It’s a COMPLETELY different instrument made to be used in a completely different context! For the rangers of Araluen, who put soooo much stock in being stealthy and their strong bonds with their horses, a recurve is the perfect fit! It’s small and easily transportable, it’s more maneuverable in combat and especially on horseback, it offers more power than a longbow of the same draw weight—really, truly, the only advantage in this case that a longbow has over the recurve is that longbows are quicker and easier to make. But we KNOW the rangers don’t care about that, their KNIVES use a forging technique (folding) that takes several times as long as standard Araluen forging practices at the time!
Okay.
Okay I think I’m done. For now.
#to be VERY clear. I Am Not An Actual Expert.#i AM however drawing from my own experience and research#and literally i can find Zero literature about recurve arrow flights dropping faster than longbows#all i could find was that recurve range is worse compared to compound bows#which. OBVIOUSLY. compound bows CHEAT.#(said lovingly. ish. if you use a compound more power to you but also It’s Doing All The Work For You.)#this article was literally all i could find from a couple hours’ search comparing recurves and longbows#anyway recurves are cool. flanagan why did you do recurves so dirty.#for that matter why are all your women blonde.#(i’m not including brotherband here sorry)#(but also why did it take a spinoff series for him to create a named female character that wasn’t a blonde)#(flanagan explain)#god these books have so many problems. truly this is my ‘i could fix him’#thank you flanagan for getting me into this special interest. now Tell Me Why You Did It Wrong.#rangers apprentice#anyway if you REALLY want to read about some bangin historical horse archers#look up the parthians :)#specifically how they fucking Decimated an entire roman contingent :)#crassus getting absolutely demolished by mounted archer parthians is definitely my favorite bit of roman trivia

i love everything i've seen from zatanna bring the house down so far but i have the worst paranoia that john's going to be DC's Part Time Justice Leaguer John Constantine who's critical of zatanna's career/choices and somehow stronger and smarter than her about all magic or even in general, especially considering what the plot is. i'm not saying he can't be better than her at anything but i'm specifically referring to when he's depicted as being zatara's equal who zatanna has much to learn from.
#(zatara meaning giovanni zatara)#i don't think i worded this well at all#I'm not wholly against this magician who isn't using magic thing dc black label is doing#maybe he'll be there for two panels in issue four i don't know#BEFORE ANYONE SAYS ANYTHING I HAVENT READ MANY ARTICLES SO I DONT SPOIL MYSELF ON (((ANYTHING)))#zatanna bring down the house#zatanna zatara#john constantine#hellblazer#dc comics#dc vertigo#dcu

Also, always a bit amused when 4K misses a spot while blanking things like this lol
#arc v#yugioh arc v#arcv#yugioh#project rambling#this is for my 'dub-uncut' edit for ep 1 lol#worked off the 4K blanking edit and touched it up some then threw on the text#looking at it more i'm leaning towards 3 myself [i usually like to try and adapt the reading to an ENG audience but sometimes#i'll leave vertical text vertical like this (see my GX 'Just After This! The Best Card...' bits)#also was kinda clever of 4K to cover up the You Show Juku kanji with Action Cards#...even if that's the literal name of the You Show School but anyway#i feel like i wanted to take a crack at this when I thought I'd be subbing ARC-V but think i ultimately worked only on the Ishjima poster#that Nico brings out--which i just revamped thanks to having posted my english edit here so i didn't lose it with my '22 drive crash#but thought 'hey i'm working on this 'what if faithful localization' why not give it a try'#like I did with the 5D's dub-uncut project and that article Angela wrote on Yusei in the DS arc#[i waaanted to be a full madman and take a full crack at translating the duel school ads in the beginning but#not too many shots of some of the ones off in the distance throughout the Standard arc to really make them out lol#might still translate location names like the bank young Yuya cries in front of or their middle school name in a later ep]

Etruscan mirrors are so bloody interesting like... What do you mean Hermes carried the egg with Helen in it from the underworld to Castor/Pollux/Leda/Tyndareus/all of them??
What do you mean sometimes they're pointing down to the ground and sometimes the ground is actually depicted as the ocean??? You're saying that the egg was LAID in the underworld and not up here???? The implication being yet again that Nemesis is the mother in these scenarios.
Carpino, Alexandra (1996) "The Delivery of Helen's Egg: An Examination of an Etruscan Relief Mirror," Etruscan Studies: Vol. 3 , Article 2.
Literally knowing of death before her life has begun.
#helen of sparta#nemesis#leda#tyndareus#hermes#dioscuri#etruscan#ancient mythology#this raises SO many questions. how long does the egg stay down there for? Immediately after being laid or just before it's going to hatch??#what counts as her birth 'home'? where she was laid? or where she was hatched? why are the answers to both of these questions 'yes'?#helen daughter of an underworld goddess and olympian god strikes once again. she's got so much range darling.#highly recommend reading the whole article btw. It's very interesting stuff. I feel like I haven't done it the justice it deserves here >_>

Today I want to share the joy that Reading A Newspaper has brought me recently (yesterday).
Because you see, it's not very often that I can read a several pages long good quality feature on a band that I'm something of a fan of, considering that until last year at best, all and any musical favourites I had were next to unheard of in the, let's call it, professional music business. And said feature also gave a few mentions to the one and only fav band of all time which I'm also still not used to being able to read about in my language (because it only happened like 5 times in total so far anyway, but still). And I can buy the newspaper in my local store in this minuscule town and find Sparks inside, like wow, it really is My Sparks, in this real life physical newspaper that I just got. This was like a belated but very epic christmas gift for me and I'm not kidding.
But well yeah getting to the point now, Franz Ferdinand are starting their tour soon promoting their upcoming new album and they're stopping in Poland too, so there was this whole 14-pages long overview of their whole career, and while I was obviously interested in the whole thing I was most hyped about the fact that there would have to be something about FFS and Sparks there and this brings me to my delighful observation that wow, all of this is so, connected in a way. Like how there are these connections in inspiration and collaborations between many of my favourites that I didn't even think about probably being a thing before, but when I think about it it just makes so much sense. Like how in this interview with Alex Kapranos, the interviewer brings up Talking Heads and specifically Fear of Music, because the new Franz Ferdinand album also has this sort of overarching theme of fear. And it's funny because that's the first Talking Heads album I've ever listened to and still my favourite from them to this day and overall one of my all-time favourite albums. And I guess it shouldn't be that shocking that it'd come up here because Talking Heads were super influential and inspired thousands, but also until now I didn't think about how both these bands share the general direction of creating dance-able type of rock with lyrics that are often on the more reflective and "intellectual" side. And also that album has been recommended to me as the most TMBG-like of theirs so. Wow I wonder why I like it.
Ok there were also all these other things that I want to mention too, so, other miscellaneous points of interest:
In the debut album review, the reviewer said that during Tell Her Tonight Alex sings a lot like Russell Mael, who likes to sing in falsetto. And well I know there's also the Sparks connection in the form of FFS to come later but still, this was such a great SPARKS MENTION!!!! moment for me anyway. But also they got one thing wrong, because it's not that Russell likes singing in falsetto, Ron forced him to sing in falsetto by writing all of his songs in this crazy uper range of notes, and that's a very important detail !!!!!!
And ok I had no idea that Piss Off already existed in some form as far back as 2004!! Or I knew about this and then I forgor. Either way, fascinating piece of information
I need to know more about how these star-based ranking systems work because why would you call FFS an "excellent album" and then rate it 4 stars. Instead of, I don't know, 4 and a half or 5 maybe?? Especially since it apparently has only 2 "weak songs". And I have some major objections when it comes to this too, because we're calling Things I Won't Get a weak track now?? It's just underrated as heck, and that's a hill that I will die on
Also I could never be a music reviewer because these people can fit their whole commentary on one song within one sentence and I feel like I would have to write at least 3 paragraphs on even the least exceptional of songs on a given album before I can feel like I did it justice. I mean, this whole post itself shows how much of a problem this is for me, lol
Also guys were we all aware that FFS turns 10 next yeah. Oh god. Well I need to remember to keep my tradition and preapre a cool piece of fanart for that occasion then. Maybe they should give us FFS 2 to celebrate, I'm pretty sure there'd be lots of interest among the fandom in something like that. Anyway
Well also this wasn't the only article in this whole thing of course and CAN YOU BELIEVE IT, there was a little bit on the Harrison & Belew Remain In Light Tour, which I will also be attending!!! Lots of great stuff is cooking for the first half of 2025 for me musically I can't lie
And also CAN YOU BELIEVE IT, that a year and a half since it was supposed to be released "worldwide" and long after I already lost hope that I'd ever see it in a cinema, they're releasing Stop Making Sense in cinemas over here too. Fucking finally!!! By gods and heavens, that rare moment when you learn about something crucial through a goddamn instagram ad of all places. And then they also reminded me about this in an actual article so well wow. Can you believe this. I can't. So stocked for next saturday when i'm seeing this movie the way it was always supposed to be seen hehehe
Ok I think that's it. Thank you for reading and maybe I should really make that personal website for my rambles in the new year. I'd definitely put that thing to use.
#god this post got away from me and grew in scope very fast. i mostly just wanted to say that it made my evening#to read and learn something very interesting about bands i like and realize that there are connections between them that i didn't see befor#and how all of that might have influenced me and my musical preferences without me having any idea about it?#and ok does this go under my long posts tag? well it definitely should#goose monologues#but well yeah some obligatory sidenotes in the tags now#all in all i must say that i'm REALLY hyped for the show now. i mean both of them. (franz & remain in light)#and i've been thinking about how the new album comes out on january 10th so. very soon. and the show is next month after that#and maybe it'd be a good idea to listen to the other albums before that. because i've only listened to 3 of them in full so far ooops#i mean it's not like they have that many albums anyway it's fine.#but also i confess that i didn't know any of the other band members names besides alex until i read this article#i mean i didn't even know who else is in the band at all so.#please forgive me for my ignorance. but well what better way is there to ring in the new year#than by blasting franz ferdinand? just like that one post said#wait i should be able to find that post actually just give me one moment
