I finished a chapter rough draft the other day, which is dangerous because my brain hasn’t swapped to the next project yet.
*gently nudges Nightsisters, Star2, the Star supplemental, the speed hump thing, and Concordance under the bed*
I clearly need an adulter adult, because the idle, long standing notion of an RvB fic is poking my brain.
I shouldn’t. I mean, there’s GOT to already be what is essentially ‘Allison time travels to the future and gets to be traumatized by encounter PFL/Blood Gulch/Chorus’ stories out there. (Not to be confused with @sroloc--elbisivni’s Unit Cohesion and Universe Collision, which are highly recommended, btw.)
I really shouldn’t. Besides, then there’s the question of what era it should play with, and then we get messy comparisons and musings (and SPOILERS) under the cut.
‘Cause I’m totally not doing this, right?
The setup is the same regardless, and easy enough to do (and summarize). Allison is a POW, stuck in cryo storage For Reasons, then woken up For Other Reasons aka ‘because the fic will be most fun then.’ But WHEN?
Blood Gulch era
Pros: Classic Tex, getting to meet Allison. Gets in most my favs. It doesn’t HAVE to focus on the Blood Gulch crew, which means post-PFL folks, which could wander into a Sim Trooper area and heey, whatta ya know, meetin’ all the people.
Cons: In. Utterable. CHAOS. Dunno if I’d have the chops or the patience to write that much stupid. This is also the era in which Wash is running around killing all sorts of people, which isn’t fun. This is also the era when Carolina is off soldiering by herself, and that doesn’t feel like something I’d want to interrupt and meanwhile let the poor girl find herself. This is before the Reds and Blues really become family, so...meh.
Result: Nah. Not really interesting, in a lot of ways.
Chorus era
Pros: Tight-knit group. Tired-dorky-but-still-TERRIFYING Wash. Carolina is older than Allison (at least in my head. Not even gonna TRY to figure out canon math and dates). Lots of chaos and DRAMA. Chorus is all about the fallout and longer term consequences of PFL, and this sure as hell fits.
Cons: I’d have to write Felix and Locus, which I’m not sure I have the chops to do. Also, INSANE FIGHTS SCENES would probably be required. Erm. Chorus is more the Blood Gulch crew’s story, not Carolina and Wash’s: tonally, it really doesn’t fit. The director is already dead. EVERYONE’S already dead, and therefore it loses a lot of impact or potential to play.
Result: Nope.
Early Project Freelancer
Pros: Alpha...probably hasn’t been wildly tortured yet? Beta presumably came along with him as a package deal, so that’s a thing. Basically everyone hasn’t been traumatized to hell and back (yet). Bit less complicated juggling required. No AIs, which means I don’t have to decide if I’m going the benign-but-broken route or the subtly-malicious one.
Cons: No AIs. Allison gets to see SOME of the scope of Shit Leonard Will Pull, but not the whole nightmare. Wildly blank canvas to work with.
Result: Maybe, but I seem to be talking myself out of it.
Later Project Freelancer
Pros: In theory, things can be salvaged BEFORE everything goes to shit. AIs. Allison gets to meet Tex, a CT that’s dealing with the enemy, and the body count that is Freelancers Gone Wild. Agewise, Carolina and Allison are peers, so there’s a kinder power balance there.
Cons: I have to decide if I’m going the benign-but-broken route or the subtly-malicious one for the AIs. This is PFL at its most broken and fucked up without actively trying to kill each other. I’ll have to figure out what to do with Sigma and the Meta. This sounds like it might be a Long Thing, instead of quick wacky hijinks.
Results: ….shiiiiiit.
