sam can control dean emotionally by pleading & using submissive puppy dog eyes while dean has physical control over sam. you understand
#might expand on this later#i partly agree that the power imbalance in their relationship goes both ways#i say PARTLY bc dean isn’t just an older brother but also a father for sam#and sam wants his trust & praise & approval#but i think it’s important to remember that the power they have over each other is not the same#dean craves physical control over sam bc it’s part of “taking care of and protecting sam” for him but also bc he’s extremely possessive#and his biggest fear is losing sam. so he always needs some kind of reminder that sam is his that he owns him#when sam acts like a brat and tries to get out of his control dean goes violent and insane#and yes he’s fully capable of hurting sam in the process (the panic room is my fave example)#sam’s power is more emotional & subtle & feminine#he knows exactly what effect his submissiveness & needy behavior have on dean and sometimes he uses it to get what he wants#anyway i have sm thoughts on this#also i talk a lot about how dean being !physically! sub in their relationship is extremely ooc in my opinion#so i wanted to explain a bit#wincest#samdean#spn

Thinking about Kayo's fear in Umi Bozu again and what it means for her character
How the fear of missing out she rattled off was an idealized version of the general life path that's open to her as a young peasant woman of her time, and that she is probably scared of missing out on that ideal, but not in the sense of not getting married at all, but in the sense of doing that whole song and dance but ending up trapped in a marriage to a terrible man, or giving birth to children who are going to get caught up in the cycles of violence she was abruptly made aware of with the fall of the Sakai clan (either as the one doing the violence or the one suffering under it, or both, creating a monster regardless)
How, if Kayo's meant to be taken as a character with her eyes to the future, that the bakeneko incident shook her certainty in it in a way that she had never had a reason to question before, having her beliefs of being a fairly ordinary person rattled to see what atrocities the "ordinary people" around her helped to commit, atrocities that very well might never have come to light without the divine intervention that was the mononoke and the medicine vendor coming to slay it
Anyway, just contemplating Kayo tonight
#mononoke#mononoke 2007#mononoke kayo#ayakashi bakeneko#and only tangentially related it would've been nice to get a chance to get a follow-up with odajima after everything too#because he was just as in the shit as kayo was and he'd have equal and opposite baggage to unpack from it all i bet#but then since it would be a lot of the same but from a different angle i guess you really only need one of them or the other#but still#anyway kayo thoughts#i say i might expand on this later but who knows lol

What’s the biggest emotional gut punch you’ve ever gotten from a show?
AHH i wish i had a good answer for this but i havent watched a lot of shows lately and im wracking my brain to remember if i had a strong reaction like that to anything i've watched in the past... ive def watched sad stuff that hit me in the heart but not enough to feel like a gut punch......
BAHA ok this gonna sound predictable but fr when i got to the end of volume 10 of trigun maximum i stopped reading for a couple of days LMFAOO T_T maybe even a week. i just reread that same chapter over and over again for a while lol
#if i think of a better answer at some point later ill update this.... it would most likely be from a movie tho#i just dont have time to watch a ton of shows#OK QWAIT I JUST THOUGHT OF ONE. THIS IS GONNA SOUND SOOO DUMB THO LOLL#the end of kill la kill gets me every time just as it did the first time i watched it like 10 years ago#i know probably an insane pick for this kind of question lol#but the trope of knowing someone for a short amount of time -> them having a massive impact on your life -> and then parting ways forever#REALLY gets me#like intersecting lines.... to intersect only at one point and then diverge never to meet again....#powerful stuff to me. the overpass 🫢
the all encompassing emotion addy felt was terror, black and threatening as the tornado rushing towards them, beckoning them closer no matter how far and fast they ran. it wasn’t just terror for herself though .. it was terror for praveen who was gone so fast, terror for kate and jeb who were crawling towards the overpass, kate who was hurt and jeb who was trying so hard to protect all of them .. terror.
addy was breathless trying to climb the incline, soaked and blinking through the rain blinding her and her glasses, ground crumbling and sliding underneath her feet, kate’s hand .. kate’s hand .. kate’s hand .. brushing her fingertips against kate’s feeling warmth for just a second, feeling hope for just a second because kate had her, kate had her and if kate had her everything would be okay .. the irrational and childish thought that they would all be okay was torn away as quickly as she was from kate’s fingertips, kate’s hand covered in blood and staining hers.
she can remember jeb shouting her name, one hand outstretched to hold onto kate and one towards her, the way he always would reach out for them, the way he would’ve done no matter what because he loved them .. and addy loved them both too and maybe that’s what made it okay in the end ( only it hadn’t been the end ) that she knew she was loved, that two people she loved fought for her tooth and nail in the middle of an EF5 tornado .. maybe it was okay because they would be safe, that would be what she wished for before the shrapnel smashed into, breaking her glasses and knocking her unconscious .. kate would be okay, jeb would be okay, javi had to be okay .. a mournful cry for praveen had been silent, lost in the winds just like addy ..
.. @tornadotame
#tornadotame#answers .. as if you know all the anwers#main .. like it always was after a storm#/ ask to tag#i had a lot of thoughts over this#i really couldn't get them all clearly so i might make another post later#but i really wanted to expand on addy's feelings the terror the hope how even in the middle of a tornado that she knew she wouldnt survive#she wanted kate needed kate and jeb and javi to survive#and i will always think about the way kate desperately brushed her hand against addys holding her fingertips for just that hopeful moment#also don't think about kate pulling tyler to safety in the pool no matter what because she wasn't able to pull addy to safety ..

ANTI CHORAL SYMPHONY??? BLOCKED???
joking but omg I can't believe mahler 2 doesn't do anything for you it reshaped my bones
maybe if i heard it live or studied it i would change my tune but so far at least mahler 2 does very little for me. i tend not to be a huge fan of late romantic works in general, and the overwhelming length/size/expansiveness of these gargantuan symphonies from the likes of mahler tend to strike me as tedious more than majestic. and as for choral symphonies, i think in pretty much every one of them i've heard post-beethoven 9 i've not been terribly impressed by the addition of vocalists. (honestly, one of the things that frustrates me so much ABOUT beethoven 9 is that it really is the one that makes it work, and beethoven's legacy/impact was such that he made so many other composers think they can do the same things he did just as well if not better, which i think succeeds in very rare cases only...but i digress.) in its smallest form (ie a soloist or two added to a movement or two) it just feels like an unnecessary addition to me, and in its largest form (full choir in every movement that is the true focus of the work, a la vaughan williams' sea symphony) i kind of think these works cease to be symphonies at some point. like, apologies to vaughan williams, but that's just a cantata. you can just call it a cantata. it's okay. i know it follows traditional symphonic structure to some extent but it's vague enough and totally dominated by the singing to be a different genre to me. and returning to mahler for a second, a symphony like mahler 2 feels very much like the precursor to something like das lied von der erde, which is more of a song cycle with orchestra (or a "song-symphony" but you can probably guess by now my feelings on that name). mahler 2 of course isn't quite that voice-heavy but it bears strong resemblance to what would come later in his output, i think; i'm still comfortable enough calling it a symphony, but i'm not entirely convinced that the choir ultimately adds to the genre in mahler 2 or in any other late romantic-modern choral symphony. personally, i'm not convinced that we should even cling so fast to the genre label of symphony for all of these works; many of them i think can (and probably should) be classified with a different genre label, whether it's something extant like "cantata" or "song cycle" or something newly coined and retrofitted (it's not like musicians have never fiddled with the naming of past works without the blessing of the composer before). idk, maybe i'm biased as to accept a much narrower definition of "symphony" than most, but the distinction matters to me.
#at any rate mendelssohn 2 should NOT be considered a symphony oh my gd. that one actually gets on my nerves lol#'cantata-symphony' 'choral symphony' THAT'S JUST A CANTATAAAAA JUST SAY CANTATA#MENDELSSOHN WROTE THOSE. IT'S FIIIIINE#okay anyway.#sasha speaks#recapitulation#hope you don't mind this. fucking essay of a response#most of this is personal taste so please don't think i'm like anti-mahler 2 (or its fans) in general#honestly calling myself anti-choral symphony is kind of tongue in cheek to begin with#dvorak is like my one exception to the 'no beloved late romantics' but he doesn't deviate very far from the established symphonic format#so much as he expands from within it like a lot of the earlier post-beethoven romantics did. and that's just more to my taste personally#(dvorak and tchaik actually even though i'm not as keen on some of tchaik's later symphonies)#anyway i'm not so opposed to mahler 2 as to write it off entirely maybe some day i'll hear it live and have my bones rearranged too#but i think if a single piece is Going to be that long it needs to be really truly spectacular from the first listen to be worthwhile#which it just isn't for me...#mvts ii and iii are good tho. mahler is great at inner movements in particular for some reason#sasha answers

i have so many thoughts about the little mermaid (2023) and it's like. oh my god who cares.
#like who gives a shit it's a nostalgia bait evil corporation remake but also that's part of my thoughts about it#btw halle bailey invented singing halle and jonah invented chemistry all of the great things about the original still hold up 30 yrs later#a lot of the expansions were actually really interesting and worked really well for me? like giving eric his own song and fleshing him out#the song itself was kinda mid as most of the original songs from these remakes are but i liked that they expanded him a bit#i think they might've missed an opportunity to explore the adoption aspect a little more but idk that might just be me#and otoh some of the added stuff was so unnecessary like#making her forget she needs to kiss him just so that idk ursula seems even more evil and sebastian has an 'excuse' to sing kiss the girl??#silly#the little mermaid figurine was adorable but they didn't repeat the words 'my little mermaid' so much#it's not a flaw of the original that they don't say the words 'the little mermaid' you don't have to say the title in the movie#a lot of these changes felt like they think the audience is dumb and don't trust them to understand that it's called the little mermaid#because she is the youngest sister and she is a mermaid. we get it okay we understand.#and also like. i get why they recruit these really talent and famous musical theatre composers to write new songs but#i think it's a better idea to get writers who can emulate menken and ashman's style a bit better bc the new songs really stuck out#lin manuel miranda is so talented but his style is so different to theirs idk#long story short halle bailer supremacy + trust your audience#or maybe don't bc my siblings always prefer the remakes to the originals and they're more representative of the general audience so.

How I learned to write smarter, not harder
(aka, how to write when you're hella ADHD lol)
A reader commented on my current long fic asking how I write so well. I replied with an essay of my honestly pretty non-standard writing advice (that they probably didn't actually want lol) Now I'm gonna share it with you guys and hopefully there's a few of you out there who will benefit from my past mistakes and find some useful advice in here. XD Since I started doing this stuff, which are all pretty easy changes to absorb into your process if you want to try them, I now almost never get writer's block.
The text of the original reply is indented, and I've added some additional commentary to expand upon and clarify some of the concepts.
As for writing well, I usually attribute it to the fact that I spent roughly four years in my late teens/early 20s writing text roleplay with a friend for hours every single day. Aside from the constant practice that provided, having a live audience immediately reacting to everything I wrote made me think a lot about how to make as many sentences as possible have maximum impact so that I could get that kind of fun reaction. (Which is another reason why comments like yours are so valuable to fanfic writers! <3) The other factors that have improved my writing are thus: 1. Writing nonlinearly. I used to write a whole story in order, from the first sentence onward. If there was a part I was excited to write, I slogged through everything to get there, thinking that it would be my reward once I finished everything that led up to that. It never worked. XD It was miserable. By the time I got to the part I wanted to write, I had beaten the scene to death in my head imagining all the ways I could write it, and it a) no longer interested me and b) could not live up to my expectations because I couldn't remember all my ideas I'd had for writing it. The scene came out mediocre and so did everything leading up to it. Since then, I learned through working on VN writing (I co-own a game studio and we have some visual novels that I write for) that I don't have to write linearly. If I'm inspired to write a scene, I just write it immediately. It usually comes out pretty good even in a first draft! But then I also have it for if I get more ideas for that scene later, and I can just edit them in. The scenes come out MUCH stronger because of this. And you know what else I discovered? Those scenes I slogged through before weren't scenes I had no inspiration for, I just didn't have any inspiration for them in that moment! I can't tell you how many times there was a scene I had no interest in writing, and then a week later I'd get struck by the perfect inspiration for it! Those are scenes I would have done a very mediocre job on, and now they can be some of the most powerful scenes because I gave them time to marinate. Inspiration isn't always linear, so writing doesn't have to be either!
Some people are the type that joyfully write linearly. I have a friend like this--she picks up the characters and just continues playing out the next scene. Her story progresses through the entire day-by-day lives of the characters; it never timeskips more than a few hours. She started writing and posting just eight months ago, she's about an eighth of the way through her planned fic timeline, and the content she has so far posted to AO3 for it is already 450,000 words long. But most of us are normal humans. We're not, for the most part, wired to create linearly. We consume linearly, we experience linearly, so we assume we must also create linearly. But actually, a lot of us really suffer from trying to force ourselves to create this way, and we might not even realize it. If you're the kind of person who thinks you need to carrot-on-a-stick yourself into writing by saving the fun part for when you finally write everything that happens before it: Stop. You're probably not a linear writer. You're making yourself suffer for no reason and your writing is probably suffering for it. At least give nonlinear writing a try before you assume you can't write if you're not baiting or forcing yourself into it!! Remember: Writing is fun. You do this because it's fun, because it's your hobby. If you're miserable 80% of the time you're doing it, you're probably doing it wrong!
2. Rereading my own work. I used to hate reading my own work. I wouldn't even edit it usually. I would write it and slap it online and try not to look at it again. XD Writing nonlinearly forced me to start rereading because I needed to make sure scenes connected together naturally and it also made it easier to get into the headspace of the story to keep writing and fill in the blanks and get new inspiration. Doing this built the editing process into my writing process--I would read a scene to get back in the headspace, dislike what I had written, and just clean it up on the fly. I still never ever sit down to 'edit' my work. I just reread it to prep for writing and it ends up editing itself. Many many scenes in this fic I have read probably a dozen times or more! (And now, I can actually reread my own work for enjoyment!) Another thing I found from doing this that it became easy to see patterns and themes in my work and strengthen them. Foreshadowing became easy. Setting up for jokes or plot points became easy. I didn't have to plan out my story in advance or write an outline, because the scenes themselves because a sort of living outline on their own. (Yes, despite all the foreshadowing and recurring thematic elements and secret hidden meanings sprinkled throughout this story, it actually never had an outline or a plan for any of that. It's all a natural byproduct of writing nonlinearly and rereading.)
Unpopular writing opinion time: You don't need to make a detailed outline.
Some people thrive on having an outline and planning out every detail before they sit down to write. But I know for a lot of us, we don't know how to write an outline or how to use it once we've written it. The idea of making one is daunting, and the advice that it's the only way to write or beat writer's block is demoralizing. So let me explain how I approach "outlining" which isn't really outlining at all.
I write in a Notion table, where every scene is a separate table entry and the scene is written in the page inside that entry. I do this because it makes writing nonlinearly VASTLY more intuitive and straightforward than writing in a single document. (If you're familiar with Notion, this probably makes perfect sense to you. If you're not, imagine something a little like a more contained Google Sheets, but every row has a title cell that opens into a unique Google Doc when you click on it. And it's not as slow and clunky as the Google suite lol) (Edit from the future: I answered an ask with more explanation on how I use Notion for non-linear writing here.) When I sit down to begin a new fic idea, I make a quick entry in the table for every scene I already know I'll want or need, with the entries titled with a couple words or a sentence that describes what will be in that scene so I'll remember it later. Basically, it's the most absolute bare-bones skeleton of what I vaguely know will probably happen in the story.
Then I start writing, wherever I want in the list. As I write, ideas for new scenes and new connections and themes will emerge over time, and I'll just slot them in between the original entries wherever they naturally fit, rearranging as necessary, so that I won't forget about them later when I'm ready to write them. As an example, my current long fic started with a list of roughly 35 scenes that I knew I wanted or needed, for a fic that will probably be around 100k words (which I didn't know at the time haha). As of this writing, it has expanded to 129 scenes. And since I write them directly in the page entries for the table, the fic is actually its own outline, without any additional effort on my part. As I said in the comment reply--a living outline!
This also made it easier to let go of the notion that I had to write something exactly right the first time. (People always say you should do this, but how many of us do? It's harder than it sounds! I didn't want to commit to editing later! I didn't want to reread my work! XD) I know I'm going to edit it naturally anyway, so I can feel okay giving myself permission to just write it approximately right and I can fix it later. And what I found from that was that sometimes what I believed was kind of meh when I wrote it was actually totally fine when I read it later! Sometimes the internal critic is actually wrong. 3. Marinating in the headspace of the story. For the first two months I worked on [fic], I did not consume any media other than [fandom the fic is in]. I didn't watch, read, or play anything else. Not even mobile games. (And there wasn't really much fan content for [fandom] to consume either. Still isn't, really. XD) This basically forced me to treat writing my story as my only source of entertainment, and kept me from getting distracted or inspired to write other ideas and abandon this one.
As an aside, I don't think this is a necessary step for writing, but if you really want to be productive in a short burst, I do highly recommend going on a media consumption hiatus. Not forever, obviously! Consuming media is a valuable tool for new inspiration, and reading other's work (both good and bad, as long as you think critically to identify the differences!) is an invaluable resource for improving your writing.
When I write, I usually lay down, close my eyes, and play the scene I'm interested in writing in my head. I even take a ten-minute nap now and then during this process. (I find being in a state of partial drowsiness, but not outright sleepiness, makes writing easier and better. Sleep helps the brain process and make connections!) Then I roll over to the laptop next to me and type up whatever I felt like worked for the scene. This may mean I write half a sentence at a time between intervals of closed-eye-time XD
People always say if you're stuck, you need to outline.
What they actually mean by that (whether they realize it or not) is that if you're stuck, you need to brainstorm. You need to marinate. You don't need to plan what you're doing, you just need to give yourself time to think about it!
What's another framing for brainstorming for your fic? Fantasizing about it! Planning is work, but fantasizing isn't.
You're already fantasizing about it, right? That's why you're writing it. Just direct that effort toward the scenes you're trying to write next! Close your eyes, lay back, and fantasize what the characters do and how they react.
And then quickly note down your inspirations so you don't forget, haha.
And if a scene is so boring to you that even fantasizing about it sucks--it's probably a bad scene.
If it's boring to write, it's going to be boring to read. Ask yourself why you wanted that scene. Is it even necessary? Can you cut it? Can you replace it with a different scene that serves the same purpose but approaches the problem from a different angle? If you can't remove the troublesome scene, what can you change about it that would make it interesting or exciting for you to write?
And I can't write sitting up to save my damn life. It's like my brain just stops working if I have to sit in a chair and stare at a computer screen. I need to be able to lie down, even if I don't use it! Talking walks and swinging in a hammock are also fantastic places to get scene ideas worked out, because the rhythmic motion also helps our brain process. It's just a little harder to work on a laptop in those scenarios. XD
In conclusion: Writing nonlinearly is an amazing tool for kicking writer's block to the curb. There's almost always some scene you'll want to write. If there isn't, you need to re-read or marinate.
Or you need to use the bathroom, eat something, or sleep. XD Seriously, if you're that stuck, assess your current physical condition. You might just be unable to focus because you're uncomfortable and you haven't realized it yet.
Anyway! I hope that was helpful, or at least interesting! XD Sorry again for the text wall. (I think this is the longest comment reply I've ever written!)
And same to you guys on tumblr--I hope this was helpful or at least interesting. XD Reblogs appreciated if so! (Maybe it'll help someone else!)

your most hated internet horror series list 🙏
THANK you for asking, sorry i missed it
im currently playing a fun game with my sister where we're just watching everything on this list that said 'rate analog horrors' (which is my least favourite genre) it is so tedious and horrible. highly recommend. as you can see, the mandela catalog received its own little section because while it is better made than a lot of these, it ruined the genre so entirely through its popularity that i cannot forgive it (its also gauche as shit so i don't feel that bad). this list is also funny because it only contains stuff made in the past 4 years so i dont get to put my old favies on it.
if you want 'so bad its funny to watch it' the classics of the genre like mandela and walten are always a go to. a couple of extras i would include for you are grub and snitch and the boiled one phenomenon (not listed). love it its so cute
if you do a watch party make an 'analog horror' bingo sheet. put shit like 'blue VHS' 'same VHS filter every time' 'spooky murderer' 'weird text to voice' 'police tape censoring stuff that it makes no sense to censor' 'stupid fucking code i am not going to open a second tab for' 'child made this' 'one person is voice acting the whole thing' 'i think tech was more advanced than this in 2004'
tell me some of ur faves i'd love to hear
#currently swamped will make a proper beloathed list and post it laters#ones that i enjoyed are above this#the majority are not listed#most of them are DNF because they were going nowhere interesting#did watch all of grub and snitch. iconic#the ok tier means it has some stuff in it that i enjoyed.#or like i was impressed by how it was made#ik a lot of people like broadside beach and it was impressive in its making but its story was so fucking cliche and the codes were so annoy#ng#dont get me wrong i like an ARG. i like an ARG when the codes fit into the story telling. and its a story worth telling#felt like a HUGE waste of my time#what else on here do i need to defend my opinion on#the monument mythos? i feel thats self explanatory. loved the start then it got stupid#the stupid lacey one. its so clearly made by a child i dont need to expand on that#oh blorngo horn is nothing its just up there because it was funny#and i think chezz only got a boost for being early to the punch. i dont remember much about it i watched it like 2 years ago#birdhouse got a push because it was so clearly some kids passion project and they put so much love into it it was sweet#fnaf vhs is high because i dont know. i let my sister put that one on i do not know jack abt fnaf#the 'nice drawing' genre should be above :/ but its niche so i didnt want it in the way of our sorting

I know I'm working on so many goddamn things but! I've been thinking about Steam Train and it's gonna get a bit of an overhaul~ ✨
#nyssa rambles#not sure if I've really talked about ST much on here#But!!#basically it was going to be a regular novel with a female protag and her sidekick#but it wasn't going well#so later on#I wrote a steampunk fairytale roughly in the same setting as that OG novel#and I really loved the world I built and wanted to expand on it#so I decided to merge the two ideas#and make a short story anthology featuring different characters#well#that idea went a lot further but#I ended up running into the issue that like#the initial premise for these stories actually taking place is still far too interesting to ignore#so I'm...remerging the ideas I guess?#it'll still more or less be a short story anthology#but it will ALSO follow a titular character who will be a major or minor addition to the story just depending on which one it is#but the stories themselves will all push that character's narrative forward#so it'll kinda like...give me some direction on what the fuck to even write about#while still satisfying that need to explain the backround stuff#and also the need to write about my old protag who is now a different character actually#idk when I'll ever work on this one but#I might ramble about it a bit more when I get more details done ✨#I still need to work on CFR which I'm...stuck™ on#I need someone to talk to about my writing so I can ramble my way out of my mental blocks... ;w;
