okay this is kind of a weird one but hear me out. Caleb is a hardcore sweater - like, his internal body temp is just naturally very high, so when doing anything even remotely active (or when he gets nervous/excited/flustered) he sweats for it 😖 of course this is kind of great in the colder months as he's literally like a living furnace, able to (and very very happy to!!) warm you up quite quickly, but is an unfortunate thing in the warmer months 😞 Caleb is super touchy feely and clingy even when it's sweltering and sweaty, which leads to some... unfortunate mornings starting by being held hostage in bed by a huge, sweaty cuddlemonster (he knows what he's doing but he simply doesn't care)

it's Super inconvenient in the summer i agree BUT! i raise you the caleb short cold showers agenda 🙏🙏 being a military man and stuff, he probably takes showers within 2 minutes and he'll take them a Lot during the summer if it means he'll be refreshed & allowed to cuddle up even when it's insanely hot out!! i think he also likes to swim, so summers with him are like. beach days & watermelon slices and apple sodas.. the sweaty cuddling is inevitable tho but you just grow used to it eventually.. it's cute!!!

Some thoughts and guesses on the Dessendre kids and their relationships with their parents. [major spoilers for the entire game]

Random word vomit because this sad ass tragic family who should just go to therapy really lives rent free in my head, please feel free to add on or correct me!

Clea

According to Renoir, the one most alike to him, but from what little we know of Aline, I’m convinced that Clea’s perfectionist artistic streak and strong personality are inherited/learned from, or a response to growing up under, her mother. Will tell you she has absolutely grown out of the need for parental validation, but almost any oldest daughter can tell you that the need to prove yourself to your mother, especially an accomplished perfectionist controlling mother (see: being upset at a child wanting to choose music over painting), doesn’t go away easily.

In arguments with her mom she probably forced Renoir to vocally side with Aline out of husbandly loyalty, only for her father to approach her quietly later and tell her she was not all wrong but please can she use less harsh words with her mother.

Coping mechanism is also control, like Renoir, except hers is not directed at things and people she felt she couldn’t control (ie her mother and her sister), but rather she chooses in her own way to take direct action for a just cause (her War). Also similarly very protective and possessive (in the sense that a wrong done to them is a wrong done to her) over her family to want to avenge the wrong done to them, but unlike Renoir, she respects her family members’ agencies. Her protectiveness over Alicia is revealed through asking painted Verso to keep an eye on her, and also thinking that it would be safer for her to be in the Canvas as she would be out of the line of fire in her War (idk if this makes sense since Alicia’s body, like her parents’, are physically vulnerable in their house).

I think she also ironically took after her mother in her artistic inclination: it sounded like Aline delighted in enchanting and delighting people with her creations (ie Renoir’s Sirene metaphor for her), while judging from her sculptures of Nevrons, Clea probably wanted to evoke the reverse sense of awe/wonder through horror and the absurd (and she’d just say this is fun isn’t it! In modern times she might be the type to giggle at horror movies.).

Verso

Both Clea and Alicia felt he was his mother’s favourite. Probably grew up with his oldest sister and mother clashing often and adopted the people pleasing mask to keep the peace between them. I feel like part of Aline’s massive grief might be because of regret of the final moments she had with her son, maybe she had harsh words with him because of his life choices, idk.

If Renoir could find a sense of control by painting, Verso probably could find a sense of truth of himself through music, although it’s very likely that he also played to delight and enchant people.

Canonically could really make Renoir laugh and had inside jokes with him, and canonically Renoir tried to get him to be more authentic to himself. Painted Verso’s (and most likely real Verso’s) gentleness and quiet curiosity and introspection of other people is probably learned from his father.

Negative tendency of feeling like he knew best for other people (toxic mutation of people pleasing + self-sacrificing tendencies) also probably learned from his father (who, prior to trying to control people’s lives as grief response, seemed to enjoy giving life advice through metaphors). This became a twisted reflection in the Canvas after years of trauma into a moral justification for his actions and motivations (at first, that his mother would bring everyone he killed back, and finally, that it’d be better for the Canvas people’s suffering to end instead of being subject to the whims of arrogant, selfish, and careless gods).

As a side note, was probably beyond excited to be an older brother (with Clea being relieved that he was way more enthusiastic about it than her). Maybe one of his first compositions was “Lullaby for my sister” to help baby Alicia fall asleep.

He had his father's eyes, although I think so does Alicia (but with her red hair it might not have been as visually striking so it took me a while to guess that).

Alicia

Clea and Verso would immediately say she’s Renoir’s favourite. Probably felt she didn’t live up to her mother’s expectations because her interest didn’t seem to be in Painting and she felt like she wasn’t as naturally gifted as Clea. Might have felt fear (of being a disappointment) and even intimidation around her mother, which her father and the rest of her siblings tried to ameliorate to no avail. Probably felt small and insignificant growing up in such an illustrious family with two talented Painter parents, a musical prodigy, and Clea.

(Renoir and Verso doting on her may have made Clea just a little bit jealous of her—idk how else to describe this but oldest kids who fought hard with their parents who in turn treat younger siblings with softer gloves probably know how this feels?)

(Renoir's interest in observing people--extrapolating from his tendency to read his kids--could maybe have inspired Alicia's interest in reading, especially because reading feels like a more intimate observation of people and their characters and motivations?)

As she grew up she probably didn’t appreciate being treated as the baby of the family (Renoir calling her “little one” and “child”, Clea calling her “little shadow” and remarking that she might have thought she’d grown up but not really). Tried to assert herself with respect to writing like how Verso asserted himself with respect to music despite their parents’ (probably mostly Aline’s) wishes. The most tragic thing is how this backfired since it sounded like it led to the whole “being used” by the Writers. Probably why Clea is just glad for Alicia/Maelle to be able to have fun and do things and make choices for herself again after the trauma of the fire and having her assertion at agency (in her, Alicia’s view) backfired at her.

How Aline treated her after the fire is cruel and unfair—yes she was grieving and hurt, but hurting her own daughter (real AND painted Alicia) to that extent? holy fucking shit. I have no idea how they will even begin to repair that relationship after their exit from the Canvas—Verso’s ending is really a beginning for the family to rebuild themselves after gravely hurting each other (FOR 67 YEARS IN RENOIR'S AND ALINE'S CASE) and idk if they will succeed (is there therapy in 19th century France…)

Side note but at the end of Alicia's ending she looks so much more like her mother after the presumed time skip which I guess is a metaphor for how she's walking in her mother's footsteps of being lost in the Canvas...

Monoco and Noco

Idk but my head canon is that even the earliest versions of the Canvas was also a grief response, maybe by little Verso trying to make sense of losing the family dog and therefore making the Gestrals their version of immortal.

Extra: Renoir

The guy literally summoned a family portrait to enter into and get major buffs… oh my fucking god…

Probably the more approachable of the two, willing to do almost anything for his loved ones. It’s why Alicia/Maelle was so confident her father would help her at the beginning of Act 3, and why, despite her seeming misgivings about her family, Clea wanted to enlist Renoir in her War (as if it was a foregone conclusion he would agree once all family members are out of the Canvas). Painted Renoir is a dark reflection of him, twisted by the sheer hopelessness and trauma of the Fracture and the years since, but both Renoir’s desperate need to control their kids to keep them safe might at first come as a little surprise to all versions of the kids who might have been used to the idea of him being the more “chill” parent (Clea would be like “nah, I’d known all along tho”).

If the kids’ idea of love was based on Renoir’s, it really explains why they did what they did, including Alicia/Maelle fighting so hard for the people of the Canvas that she loved (but also not to flatten the complexity of her motivation which also included selfish escapist reasons, some of which are incredibly relatable and sympathetic).

Wish we know more about Aline, but at the very least we know that she must have been an incredible partner to have helped Renoir with his own addiction to a previous Canvas. She probably was a good mom too--her kids clearly loved her and respected her (even if Clea might not outwardly say this aloud). I guess that's the really horrible thing about grief and addiction--we really only tend to remember the worst and most hurtful things people do in the throes of those things.

Some ask why would Singed turn Vander into a werewolf. What purpose does it serve? In my very sinco biased perspective, I'd say not much, it's just poetic irony.

Singed has known Silco for years working together to advance shimmer for very different reasons, and still built something stable and successful. Singed probably took care of Silco's eye and overall health for just as many years and in all that time isn't it likely he looked at the infection's further encroaching damage to Silco's and just thought, "What an animal"?

I don't think there was any rage to it though, I think Singed saw this as an objective assessment of who Vander was. How else can you describe a person that brutalized a person they considered family to Singed? A man that was willing to cross every boundary to save his daughter, the last of his family? A man that took extreme measures to prevent Silco from witnessing his own daughter in pain.

Maybe to Singed, Hound of the Underground seemed like an apt nickname, because only a beast of a man could turn on their family like that. Maybe Warwick's been conditioned to go into a frenzy of violence against those around him when blood is exposed because that's what happened between Vander, Silco, and Felicia. Why give Warwick knives for hands, because Vander's fists cut Silco's eye in the drowning scene.

This is almost exclusively for Singed btw. It's a toss up if Silco ever knew any of this was happening (he'd probably have a breakdown if he did).
