under the cut
Okay perfume talk, I wouldn’t consider myself to be a serious fraghead but I’ve been in this for a couple of years maybe 3 or 4 so I’m not a novice either atp,, Every holiday season Sephora and ulta release a perfume/cologne set of tester samples that you can also use to redeem a full or travel size of perfume which is a pretty good deal because getting perf samples is a pain in the ass esp if you’re looking for more elusive perfume, usually goes around $4-6 on average so getting this collection of say (for this year, it varies per year I believe the average is around 7-8 samples for the travel pack and usually something similar for the full/mid size set) 8 samples for a value of 34 is really good plus you get a travel size on top of that for free because again, if each of those samples you’re eyeing are even just 4 bucks a piece, that’s still 32 and you’re out a travel size so these are really good value deals.
Now here’s the issue. Every single year without fail, there are the sample fucking scents EVERY SINGLE TIME yeah yeah cult classics or whatever but it’s fucking boring and it lowers the value of the set because we already tried them the previous year and if you just want to try like say three scents, it’s better to just go in store try them and buy a normal travel size, which are typically from $28-34 depending on the brand but this is a typical average for travel sizes. It’s always the most BORING scents they choose to re-use because we’re stuck in like 2015 or something idk but usually you can see D&G’s light blue, herrera’s good girl, Valentino bright crystal, ysl black opium AND libre, Viktor & Rolf either flower bomb or good fortune. Here’s the other issue with these sets, 90% of these scents are strong vanilla or heavy sweet floral which is fine EXCEPT that’s most the set. It’s just not very versatile usually, and caters to a specific group of people who enjoy more overpowering scents because, again, that’s what perfume is known as typically. Kinda strong vanilla (specifically vanilla base) and usually a floral like rose or peony.
ALSO my other issue with these sets is that I KNOW the other perfume in them are ass because I’ve smelt them before. The other ones they add in are not ‘indie’ perfumes per say but they’re not super popular such as Juliette has a gun which HAS GOOD SCENTS BUT they ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS put in not a gun which is a layering scent and is lame and is not for the average normal people consumer because most people don’t think to layer their perfume when they’re testing out new scents so I think it’s not great in these kinds of sample sets because people want to take each scent in as an individual.
Regardless, they always choose some of the most popular scents and some mid scents from other brands which are ‘trendy or people have their eyes on’ but typically smell mediocre if I haven’t mentioned that. That brings me to this year where they’ve really stepped it up. This year, they changed the typical line up to the ‘one off’ scents where a lot of big frag brands will create a ‘twist’ on their scents and sometimes it does make a difference, but sometimes not.
For example, black opium from ysl has like three iterations where there’s the classic, there’s one called over red, and there’s one called like illicit green or something WHCIH is not to be confused with edp, edc, and edt that’s different <- this is the strength of the fragrance concentration (side tangent, perfume is comprised of two main elements, the alc which diffuses the perfume and is the reason why when you first spray something it smells like alc and the actual fragrance oils, each of those have varying quantities of each, the strongest smell and amount of fragrance oil to alc concentration goes eau de parfum, followed by eau de cologne, then eau de toilette <- the toilette is a reference to the bathroom aka toilet, meaning you’re supposed to refresh this perfume when you go to the bathroom so it’s intentionally a perfume that doesn’t last).
Anyways. This year, the sample set from Sephora has more ‘new’ scents that step away from the cookie cutter cult classics and also have favored the new ‘twist’ perfumes on the actual classics, typically as a means of promotion for the new version of the scent which usually isn’t as well loved/recieved aka Herrera’s new version of good girl which is good girl blush. They also have included perfume oils which is really new and fresh because those have been increasing in trend recently and I really appreciate it. Anyways, there’s a new massive set for 95? That has 15 samples and includes a free MID sized perfume, it says full size but it’s actually the size in between full and travel, it’s usually around a two oz or so less which comes out to around 30-50 mL usually (depends on the brand, some do both 30 and 50 if they’re more expensive) compared to a full which is usually around 98sih mL. The line up was pretty good!! I was happy about the mix of older and newer scents that they chose, though I’m not happy about the appearance of Charlotte tilbury into the perfume world, I haven’t tried any but just looking at them they look cheap and gross in terms of scent. While the trend to cater towards sweet and floral hasn’t changed, I’m glad they started branching out of the usual mainstream scents and I really do think that even the smaller full and travel sets they came out this year are a lot more unique than usual.
In terms of ulta, they’re lacking a bit as per usual when it comes to these things, but they also included a new like diversity set so there’s one with all the cult classics and there’s a different one where most are relatively newer scents which I like, also the price point is crazy it’s like 17 and 14 scents (the sets have different # of scents, the classics is 17 the new one is 14) for 20 plus a 15 gift card so the ‘essentials’ they have is good for people getting into perfume and those that want the normal popular scents and the newer one are more relevant scents to 2022ish and while it’s still a sweet vanilla and floral set, I’m happier about the ones they chose to include. Though the thing with these sets is that there’s always a chance they’ll give you perfumes that are empty/half full just because this is something third parties put together. There’s less of a risk with regular sample sets that the brands put out because it’s from the brand, but Sephora and ulta have a history of having crappy sets with less than full bottles, however if you’re just wanting to sincerely try out a scent like once or twice, it’s whatever. Honestly I don’t need most of my samples past one use because I can tell when I like or hate something pretty easy. Anyways, that’s my thing about perfume LMFAO sorry this was long
do you guys want to see my literal essay i just sent to my coworker about perfume
#chatterye#tldr: sample sets came out and are not completely ass for once but still mostly vanilla and floral#also long tags under here be warned#also i was really proud of myself for correctly putting peony for florals because that's so popular#like i just fragrantica-ed it and i was so right it's in everything#also yeah i pulled most of this from memory i did fact check some of the thigns though#like the number of samples the price and the average mL size for this year#otherwise names and stuff? all from my head unfortunately#i don't really understand the ulta deal but whatever#i might get their 14 sample set i'm curious about some of them#i liked some of sephora's BUT in those same sets i know i hate like half of them#or i can tell i will hate them#i need the perfume world to walk away from coconut scents and beach scents#they always suck and smell like sunscreen#also i just hate coconut#also honorable mentions for overused scents include anything from the replica series#which i like one scent from but people need to lay off them#and jo malone <- ass brand btw we don't like them#but their scents are in everything also recent up and coming indie brands that are everywhere#dedcool which i don't love their stuff by rosie jane <- hated everything i tried#henry rose is better but i don't love them milk commodity <- i'm just biased against layering scents/skin scents don't love them#kayali which i literally have perfume from but they always choose her vanilla one which is okay but also basic and boring#7 virtues which i like more of their scents so i'm fine with this#they throw nest in there pretty frequently and i like some of their scents but there's a lot of misses for me#also i am begging them to stop putting not a perfume everywhere#pear inc from jhag is so much more exciting and fun and good but seriously why not a perfume#literally jhag has good other scents stop putting not a perfume PLEASE#'but it's popular' IDGAF i am TIRED of it#i could actually go on more about this but i won't#i'll stop here....

Vacation on Isle Esme
Tumblr media
Word count 6,363. Demetri x OC  Part One
A few months after the confrontation with the Volturi Carlisle decided that the family should take a vacation to Isle Esme and he would invite Aro, Marcus, and Caius as an olive branch to try and resolve current tensions between the two covens. He also knew they would bring Demetri, Felix and the twins. He sent an invitation with the details and that’s when things got interesting. The moment they accepted the invite Alice had a vision that would change everything for Alyssa Swan, Bella’s younger sister. After her vision she spoke to Carlisle who decided that Aro needed to know about what Alice saw and to get his permission to tell Alyssa about the vampire world. Aro agreed on the condition that Alyssa joined them on the two week vacation so with that Esme invited Alyssa to vacation with them.
Aro decided not to tell anyone about what Alice saw as he knew her visions were subjective and he wanted to see for himself first hand and have Marcus confirm it. Aro had told his brothers and the four elite guards that Carlisle was bringing a human and that noone was to touch or harm her. Caius wasn’t pleased to have a human around especially if she knew the Cullens. “I thought Carlisle wanted to build bridges, so why is he bringing a human with him?” Caius said sounding displeased “Because I gave him permission brother and she isn’t just any human, she’s family” Aro responded grinning at Caius. “Family? Who’s family?” Caius demanded “Bella’s but hopefully she will bring us closer to the Cullens” Aro replied still grinning “What are you up to Aro?” Marcus asks “Nothing brother. I’m just looking forward to our vacation” Marcus was suspicious as Aro seemed far too happy to meet this human. Demetri and Jane had heard this exchange as they were the only guards in the throne room as Aro had dismissed the others. Jane was intrigued to find out if Bella’s relative would be immune to her gift whilst Demetri was curious as why Aro was allowing the Cullens to bring a human on vacation with them.
Later that night Aro called Felix and Alec to the throne room “Now the four of you are here I have some news to share. We have been invited to join the Cullens on a two week vacation, on Isle Esme. There will be a human relative of Bella’s joining us, therefore, there is a house rule in place that must not be broken; Noone is to touch or harm the human girl. Is that understood?” Aro said looking at the guards “Yes master.” Felix replied, the other three nodding in agreement.
One month later the Cullens and Alyssa arrived at Isle Esme; the Volturi were already inside the house waiting for them, Aro being excited to meet Alyssa. “Afternoon Aro, Marcus, Caius” Carlisle greeted. “Carlisle so nice to see you again” Aro said shaking his hand. “Esme my dear, thank you for inviting us to your lovely home” Marcus said smiling “You’re very welcome. We’re glad you could come” Esme replied. Demetri tuned out this conversation the second he saw Alyssa; her long brown hair, the blue denim shorts and pink strappy top she was wearing and the leopard print sunglasses covering her eyes. She was standing beside Bella and he was amazed at the self-control Bella had around her, even if she was family considering Bella was still a newborn.
“Aro this is Alyssa Swan, Bella’s sister” Carlisle says pointing to Alyssa; she lifts her sunglasses to rest on top of her head “Hello Aro, it’s nice to meet you” She holds out her hand to him. Demetri notices her chocolate brown eyes “She’s really pretty for a human” Jane whispers to Alec “Prettier than Bella was when she was human” He responds, Demetri smiling as he agrees with the twins ‘She’s beautiful. Shame about the ‘no touching the girl’ house rule’ He thinks to himself, a low growl came from Edward, causing Demetri to smirk in his direction ‘Don’t like my thoughts, stay out of my head’ He thought.
Meanwhile, “Amazing, I see nothing, much like your sister” Aro says smiling “Jane” Caius says raising a hand to call her forward “That won’t be necessary my dear” Aro interjects, and Jane steps back beside her brother. “Alyssa, these are my brothers Marcus and Caius” Aro says pointing to his brothers. “These are our elite guards; left to right we have Felix, Demetri, Jane and Alec” They all nod, Demetri smiling at her “It’s nice to meet you all” She responds smiling.
“What I don’t understand is why another human knows about us and why is she here on vacation with all of us?” Caius asks, clearly irritated “As I said before brother, Alyssa knows about us because I gave Carlisle permission to tell her on the condition that she comes on vacation with us” Aro replies smiling “That still doesn’t explain why she had to know about us” Caius says “All will be revealed in time dear brother” Aro replies whilst looking at Alyssa and smiling. “Alyssa come with me and I’ll show you to your room” Esme says smiling and placing her hand gently on Alyssa’s back as they leave the room, Demetri watching them leave. Marcus stayed quiet observing the interactions of everyone in the room.
That evening Felix, Demetri and the twins are playing cards in the dining area; Emmett and Edward are playing chess with Bella shielding Emmett and Rosalie watching them, Jasper and Alice were reading outside on the beach, whilst Carlisle and Esme were talking with Aro and Marcus. Caius was reading on the sofa but couldn’t help smirking when he noticed Alyssa reading ‘A Vampire for Christmas’, not that he had heard of or read the book, but the title amused him.
A little while later Alyssa got up to get a drink and on her way back to the front room she passed the guards seated at the dining table playing poker. She stood behind Demetri and observed them for a few minutes; it was clear he was losing to the others, and that Felix was clearly winning. “I see your $10 and raise $10” Felix says; Alec replies “Fold” Demetri just stares at his cards but before he can do anything Alyssa picks up two $5 chips and places them in the middle “Call” She says and smiles “Fold” Jane replies. “Ok, call” Felix says smirking at Demetri as he lays down his cards and reaches for the chips in the middle “Good, but not good enough” Alyssa smiles taking the cards from Demetri and laying them down. Felix looks shocked as she collects the chips, placing them in front of Demetri. “You’re welcome” She looks at Demetri and smiles before she starts to walk away; she then feels a cold hand grip her wrist “Please stay” She stops and looks at him surprised; he gently pulls her onto his lap so she’s facing the table “You’re my good luck charm” He says letting his left hand rest on her hip. “Yea Dem’s lost most of the night” Felix laughs, Demetri growling low in response “Did you just growl?” Alyssa asks Demetri over her shoulder, he just nods and she smiles “Ok then” Felix and the twins can’t help laughing. They continued playing poker although Demetri was more interested in the human seated on his lap than the game, but Alyssa had it covered, giving Felix and the twins a run for their money. “Full house” Alec said smiling thinking he’d won, Demetri looked at his cards “No good Alec” He responded as Alyssa laid down their cards showing they had four of a kind.
Demetri couldn’t help inhaling her scent ‘Coconut and Pineapple’ “You smell good” He whispers in her ear, but the others heard. “Thank you” She replied, Jane looked at her confused “I’m pretending he meant my perfume, even though I know he didn’t” Alyssa felt him rest his chin on her shoulder and Jane nodded. Alyssa still sitting on his lap turned to face him slightly “I’ll make you a deal” He raised an eyebrow “I’ll let you smell me, take in my scent whenever you want over the next two weeks if you promise to protect me and not eat me” “Deal” He replied quickly, smiling at her as he took in her scent again. “My own personal vampire bodyguard” She chuckled and Demetri shook his head a little still smiling “Strange little human” Alec added.
Felix dealt out new cards; Jane starting the new round said “$20” “I see your bet and raise you $30” Felix said confidently to the table; Alec matching the bet “All in” Alyssa states confidently “Fold” Comes the reply from Jane “Ok, I see your bet” Felix responds pushing his chips into the centre of the table. “Fold” Alec replies. “Ladies first” Alyssa says smirking at Felix, Demetri chuckles. Felix laid down his cards – straight flush “Good, but just not good enough” Alyssa lays down their cards – royal flush.  Demetri smiles as he and Alyssa pull the chips towards them “Thank you cara” He smiles at her “You’re welcome. Goodnight” She got up from Demetri’s lap “Goodnight” He responded watching her walk away to her room. Marcus smiled to himself seeing the start of a bond forming between the tracker and the human.
It was around 03.00am and Felix and Demetri were out on the beach looking out at the ocean “You ok? You seemed distracted tonight D. You don’t usually lose so much” Felix said “I don’t know I just couldn’t focus on the game, but I still won though” “With the help of a human” Felix replies nudging him “With the help of a beautiful human Fe” Demetri responds smiling, Felix nodding. “What had you so distracted D?” “I can’t help thinking about why Aro allowed Carlisle to tell Alyssa about our kind and why he insisted she come on vacation with us” “It is a bit strange, it’s as if he knows something we don’t and doesn’t feel like sharing the information” Felix responds “He’s definitely keeping something to himself Fe, that much was obvious when he first told Marcus and Caius about Alyssa and the vacation. Jane and I were the only guards in the throne room at the time as Aro had dismissed the others” “Whatever it is, Caius is not happy about her being here and I doubt that will change anytime soon” Felix added.
The following morning Alyssa walked into the kitchen wearing a pink bikini with a mid-thigh length black cover up that was slightly see through due to the crotchet pattern. “Morning” She greeted the room with a smile; grabbing a bottle of water from the fridge and preparing a quick fruit salad for breakfast. Demetri stopped reading the second he caught her scent and watched her walk into the kitchen “Good morning Alyssa” He said smiling from the other side of the kitchen island “Sleep well?” “Er kind of” She replied “I found it a little weird, hard even to sleep knowing there are 15 vampires in the house” She looked down starting to eating the fruit. “I’m sorry to hear that” He didn’t like hearing that she didn’t feel safe enough to sleep ‘I made a promise to protect her and I will keep that promise, ensuring she feels safe’ He thought to himself. “I’m going out to sunbathe” She made her way outside and found a nice spot on the beach and after laying down a beach towel she removed her cover up and got comfortable.
About five minutes later he made his way outside and sat beside her. “I know you guys probably don’t sunbathe but can you at least put some shorts on? You are way too overdressed to be outside” She said looking up at him, he nodded “I’ll be right back” He sped inside and changed into a pair of beach shorts and was back outside sitting beside her quicker than she thought possible “Better?” He asked “Much” She leant in towards him and whispered “Sparkles” He raised an eyebrow at her “Sparkles?” She smiles nodding at him; lying back down, Demetri laid down beside her his hand lightly brushing hers. “Favourite colour” She asked “Red, you?” He replied “Blue... Favourite animal?” “Cats, you?”  He replies “Tigers, I even asked for a tiger for my 6th birthday” She giggles at the memory. “Not sure they’d make great pets cara” He laughs “That’s what my mum said funnily enough” They continued to ask questions as a way to get to know each other. “Do you have any hobbies Demetri?” “I like reading and travelling. I’ve seen quite a bit of the world, but there are places I’d still like to see. What hobbies do you have?” “I also like reading, shopping and baking. I’d like to travel when I’m older, see the world” She replied ‘I could show her the world’ He thought looking at her.
She rolled onto her front and Demetri did the same “Can I ask how long you’ve been a vampire?” “Over 1000 years” He replied “Wow! How old were you when you were turned?” “I was 21” He answered and she smiled “You look good for your age” He chuckles at her response “Thank you. Can I ask how old you are?” “I’m 17. I was wondering do you have a gift? Is that why you are an elite guard with the Volturi?” He nodded “Yes, I have a gift. I am a tracker and yes that is why I am an Elite guard. Although there are other trackers out there I am the best at what I do” “Really? How does your gift work?” She asks curiously “I pick up on the essence of someone’s mind and can follow it like a scent over any distance. To be able to do this I have to either have met that person physically or anyone who has met the person in the past” “Oh my god that sounds so cool. It’s also good to know if I ever get lost I can just call you; the best tracker in the world and find out exactly where I am” She says smiling at him, he smiled back “I’m unsure if I can track you” Alyssa looked confused “I cannot track Bella because of her shield, even when she was human” “Are you able to track me? I mean I know Aro and Edward can’t read my mind” “I haven’t tried, but I will later when we are apart and will let you know” She nods in response.
Marcus had spent the day reading inside but every now and again he would look outside at Demetri and Alyssa and smile at how well they’re getting along. “Are the Cullens really expecting us to let Alyssa leave here alive?” Caius asks Marcus “I think so yes and I don’t think Aro is going to give the order to kill her either” “Are you going to give the order?” “No Caius I am not. I do not believe her to be a threat to us” Caius huffed but said nothing, still not happy that Alyssa knew their secret and was on vacation with them.
That night Alyssa sat on her bed reading her book A Vampire for Christmas when there was a knock on the door “Who is it?” “It’s me Demetri” He replied poking his head round the door, she smiled “Come in” Demetri came into her room and closed the door “Just wondered what you were up to?” “Just reading” She replies holding up her book “What about you?” “Nothing much. I was reading but it’s gotten a bit noisy in the other room” He chuckles softy “You’re welcome to stay in here and read with me” She replied, he smiled at her “I’d like that. Thank you Alyssa” He sat on the bed beside her reading; thinking about how they’d spent the day together on the beach. He noticed her heartbeat was slowing down and looked to his side to see she had fallen asleep sitting up reading but with her head down. He took the book from her and gently laid her down; laying down beside her and continuing to read. “Goodnight cara” He stroked her hair and felt relaxed knowing she was with him, her heartbeat slow and steady and her scent filling his nostrils. ‘I hope she sleeps better tonight’
Alyssa woke lying on her side and when she opened her eyes she saw Demetri “Morning” Her voice sounded sleepy "Morning cara” He replied smiling “You stayed?” “Yes, hope you don’t mind” “No, I don’t mind” She smiled at him. “You didn’t get bored whilst I slept then?” He shook his head “Nope. I spent most of the night reading. I’m used to spending my nights alone so it was nice to have some company, even if you were sleeping” He winked at her and she blushed slightly “So does that mean you don’t have a mate then?” “That’s correct, I have yet to meet her” She noticed that he looked and sounded a little sad “1000 years is a long time to be on your own” Alyssa said sympathetically resting her hand on his arm, Demetri felt a warm feeling run through him at her touch and he smiled at her before placing his cold lips to her forehead; both their eyes closing in the moment. “I hope you find her soon, you’re too nice to spend forever alone” She said quietly “Thank you. You are very sweet” He replied softly ‘I could spend forever with you’ He thought looking at her lying in front of him; he’d never thought that about anyone before. “I plan to look around the island a bit and maybe go swimming; did you want to come with me? I mean if you don’t have plans or anything” She was blushing again, he smiled at her “Sounds like a good day, I’m in. It’ll give me a chance to see if I can track you too”
Demetri showered and changed in a pair of grey shorts and a white t-shirt whilst Alyssa had breakfast; then waited for her in the front room whilst she got ready. “Fancy a game of chess?” Felix asked Demetri “One game as I’m waiting for Alyssa. We’re going out for the day” Felix raised an eyebrow “I think he’s traded you in for someone better Felix” Jane teased “And she’s human” Alec added laughing; Felix put a hand to his chest and feigned a hurt look “How could you D? After all these years” Marcus was smiling at the guards’ behaviour and was happy that Demetri was spending time with Alyssa, even if he hadn’t realised what she was to him yet. Alyssa stepped out of her room dressed in short blue denim shorts, a blue strapless top and her leopard print sunglasses, she had a black bikini on underneath. Felix smirked when he saw Demetri eyeing Alyssa as she walked towards them. “Ready?” Demetri asked her completely forgetting he was part way through a game of chess with Felix “Yes, I’ll just grab a bottle of water from the fridge. Have you finished your game?” She asked nodding towards the chess board “Alec can take over for me” He said getting up and taking her warm hand in his cold one and leading her out of the house.
“Master is she his…” Jane started but Marcus cut her off “I think we all know the answer to that, even if they haven’t figured it out” “How is it that he doesn’t know?” Alec asked “Not all mate pairings are ‘love at first sight’ sometimes the bond forms over time. He likes her and is clearly drawn to her as he has spent the last 24 hours with her and she likes him too. They’ll figure it out soon, don’t worry” Marcus replied smiling “I’m glad he’s finally found her. He deserves to be happy” Felix added. “Wonder how Bella and the Cullens will react when they realise Demetri and Alyssa are mates” Jane mused “It doesn’t matter what they think and anyway they are in no place to judge or object” Alec responded. The Cullens were all off doing their own thing; some had gone to the mainland to hunt.
Demetri and Alyssa walked hand in hand exploring the island until they came to cliff edge that was opposite a waterfall. “That’s an amazing view” Alyssa said smiling before looking up at Demetri, he smiled too looking down at her “Yes it is. Want to go for a swim?” He asked nodding down to the water below, before removing his t-shirt “Yes but how are we going to get down there?” She responded whilst removing her shorts and top “Do you trust me?” He asked holding out his hand “Yes” She placed her hand in his and he pulled her to him; wrapping an arm around her waist he lifted her up, her legs wrapping around his waist “Good girl” He smirked “Don’t let go” “I won’t” He felt her arms wrap around his neck before he jumped, landing in the water below. They came up to the surface Alyssa giggling “What’s funny cara?” “I just can’t believe we jumped off the cliff” She responds looking up “It was the only way down. Thank you for trusting me” “You’ve given me no reason not to Demi” He liked hearing the nickname she gave him and kissed her cheek causing her to blush. He put her down and she swam away from him going under the water; he watched her resurface and turn to face him “Come on Sparkles” She smiled and in a flash he was in front of her wrapping an arm around her and pulling her into his side whilst his other hand began tickling her. She started laughing and squirming in his hold “D-Dem…s-stop” “No” He continued to tickle her enjoying seeing her squirm in his hold “Pl-please…Spar-Sparkles” Sounding breathless from laughing “Sparkles. Really?” He replies smirking, continuing to tickle her and she nods resting her head on his shoulder trying to catch her breath; he pauses tickling her and starts stroking her hair whilst gently resting his head upon hers.
After spending a few hours in the water Demetri picks Alyssa up and jumps up on the cliff above “Thank you Dem” “You’re welcome” They both put their clothes back on and continue to explore some more of the island, walking hand in hand. “How are we going to find out if you can track me?” She asked “I’ll stay here whilst you go hide somewhere and I will try and track you to find you. I’ll give you 5 minutes and please be careful” “I will” Alyssa went and hid, waiting for Demetri to find her. Demetri closed his eyes and tried to reach out to pick up the tenor of her mind only to find he couldn’t find her tenor which meant he couldn’t track her; this made him feel uneasy, anxious even. He took an unneeded breath to calm himself before setting off find her by tracking her scent ‘This may take a while’ He thought. Ten minutes later he found her “I’m guessing you can’t track me?” “Correct cara mia. I had to find you by your scent which takes longer” “I’m sorry Dem” She looked down, his fingers lifted her head up “No need to apologise cara, if I ever have to ‘find’ you it’ll just take me longer than normal but I will always find you” She nodded and took his hand in hers “Thank you for coming with me today” She said smiling at him “Thank you for inviting me” He smiled backed at her.
That night Alyssa makes herself a pasta dish for dinner and Demetri offers to help “You know how to cook?” He shakes his head “No, not really, but I’d still like to help though” She smiles at him “Ok then, if you want to fill that pan with water till it’s half full that’ll be good. Thank you” Felix is watching them from the front room and can’t help laughing “What’s funny Felix?” Alec asks “Demetri trying to help Alyssa cook when he has absolutely no idea what he’s doing” Felix started laughing again, Alec joining in. “Oh leave him alone, he’s just trying to bond with his mate” Jane says quietly causing Felix and Alec to look at her confused “Since when did you start defending him sister?” “I’m just saying he’s making an effort so you shouldn’t laugh at him” “But sister it’s funny to watch” Alec chuckles and Jane shakes her head.
“Have you seen Bella?” Alyssa asks Marcus “She went with Edward to hunt on the mainland earlier today and have yet to return. In fact all the Cullens have yet to return from their activities” “Oh, ok. Thank you for letting me know” She sounded a little disappointed, something that didn’t go unnoticed by Demetri “I’m going to read outside” She went into her room grabbed her book and sat outside on the veranda attached to her room. Demetri followed her grabbing the blanket from the sofa as he passed; he sat down beside her placing the blanket over them “Here let me” He said taking the book from her and began reading to her; she moved a little closer to him and rested her head on his arm. She fell asleep whilst he read to her feeling comfortable with him. He picked her up gently and laid her in the bed, covering her with the duvet before changing into a pair lounge pants and climbing in beside her “Good night cara mia” He placed a kiss to her hair and spent the night reading whilst she slept.
The following afternoon the Cullens and the Volturi were split between the beach and the front room all doing various things “Hey Bells, what are you up to later? Want to do something?” Alyssa asks “I’m sorry Ally, Edward and I are going out tonight. Actually we’re going out with Jasper, Alice, Emmett and Rosalie” Bella replies “It’s a date night” Emmett added “The six of us are going over to the mainland” “Oh ok. No worries. Have fun” Alyssa responded trying to hide her disappointment and got up deciding to go for a walk on the beach. Demetri put down the book he was reading; got up from the chair and ran after Alyssa “Hey, wait up” He called out and she stopped “Hey Dem. What’s up?” “Are you ok?” “Yea, I’m fine. Why?” “You seemed a little disappointed when Bella said she had plans for tonight” He replied “Well it’s just… they invited me to come here with them and yet they don’t want to spend time with me” She wasn’t smiling and he didn’t like it “Well their loss is my gain” He smiled at her “I like spending time with you Ally; so much so I wondered if you wanted to go out with me tonight?” He asked “What? Like a date?” “Yes Ally. I’d like to take you out on a date” “I’d love to” She replied smiling and gave him a quick hug, he felt happy knowing he had made her smile. “What did you have in mind?” She asked “I was thinking dinner and dancing” “Sounds fun. Dinner, wait… you can’t eat anything?” “Don’t worry about me, I have that covered” He took her hand in his and they continued walking along the beach.
Later that night Alyssa got ready in her room; having decided on a black mid-thigh length dress with spaghetti straps and black stilettos; natural looking make-up with her hair curled and in a half up/half down style. Demetri had decided on black jeans, a grey shirt and smart black shoes. “How come you’re all dressed up Demetri?” Emmett asked curious “I’m taking Ally out for dinner and dancing” He replied “You’re taking my sister out on a date?” Bella questioned “Yes, Bella, I am. Your sister is a lovely girl and I enjoy her company” He replied; Marcus smiling at the tracker as he could see the mate bond was getting stronger between him and Alyssa. “I don’t think I like the idea of that. Edward…” Bella started but trailed off when Alyssa entered the front room; Demetri gasped “Wow! You look amazing Ally” She blushed looking down and taking her bottom lip between her teeth she looked up at Demetri through her lashes “Thank you” “Ready?” He asked looking her up and down ‘Beautiful, absolutely stunning’ He thought to himself smiling and placing a hand on the small of her back they made their way to the dock where the boat was waiting for them.
“Edward I don’t like the fact that he has taken her out, I mean if she had ended up on one of their ‘tours’ he would have killed her without a second thought” Bella said loudly “Bella, calm down. He isn’t going to hurt her, trust me. I’ve read his thoughts and they are…” “His thoughts are what Edward?” Rose asked joining the conversation “His thoughts are private!” Jane shouted entering the room “He would not appreciate you reading them let alone sharing them Edward” She continued. “She’s my sister and I have a right to know” “No Bella! You don’t. None of you have a right to know his thoughts just as none of you have the right to object them going on a date” Alec added “I mean they have spent the last few days together, not to mention he has stayed in her room the last two nights” Felix said smirking. “How did I not know she has spent so time with him” Bella said the last word with disgust “Probably because you have been too busy to talk to Ally, let alone spend time with her” Jane replied “You heard Demetri Bella, he likes spending time with your sister” She added smirking “You make it sound she’s his mate” Emmett responded; the twins and Felix didn’t answer, they just turned around and left the room. “Don’t worry about Demetri and Ally, let’s get ready for our own date” Edward said holding out his hand to Bella.
Once on the mainland Demetri and Alyssa made their way to a restaurant for dinner. Once seated their waiter came and took their order; Alyssa ordered Mango and Lime Chicken with Rice and a glass of water, Demetri ordered the same. “I didn’t think you could eat food” Alyssa said quietly “We can eat food, it just doesn’t taste very nice and we have to…deal with it later” “Oh Dem. Don’t make yourself uncomfortable just for me” “You are the only person I would eat food for and anyway it’s a date; you can’t eat alone” She smiled “Thank you Demi, you’re very sweet.”
After dinner Demetri and Alyssa made their way to a club; he ordered them some drinks and then took her hand and led her onto the dancefloor. They spent a few hours dancing and drinking before making their way back to the house. “Thank you for tonight Dem, I had fun” “You’re very welcome. I had fun too and thank you for coming out with me” “Anytime Dem” She responded “Will you stay with me again tonight?” She smiled at him “Yes Ally I will” He wrapped an arm around her waist and pulled her into his side burying his nose into her hair and breathing in her scent.
They both got ready for bed and climbed beneath the duvet and Demetri began reading to her “I’m getting sleepy” She said quietly “I can tell” “Goodnight Demi” “Sweet dreams Ally” He kissed her forehead and she fell back against the bed and tried to ignore the pleasant warmth spreading through her.
The following morning Demetri woke Alyssa up with breakfast in bed “Ally wake up” He shook her arm gently and she opened her eyes and gave him a sleepy smile “Good morning cara, I’ve made you breakfast” “Good morning Dem” She sat up in bed and he placed the tray on her lap and climbed back into bed beside her “Thank you for breakfast” He had made her pancakes with strawberries. Once she finished eating he took the tray and placed it on the floor; he then put his arm around her gently pulling her closer and began to reading aloud. That afternoon they played a game of Chess before Felix, Demetri and the twins left to go hunting. “I’ll see you soon Ally” Demetri said before placing a kiss to her forehead. “Ok and don’t rush, I’ll be fine here with Marcus and Caius”
Once they left Ally got up and sat in the chair near Caius “Can I ask you about what you do?” Caius looked up from his book “Sorry, did the Cullens not tell you about us?” She shook her head “I kind of got a crash course in Vampires, if you get what I mean” “I’m not sure we do understand my dear” Marcus replies “They told me that Vampires existed; that they are vegetarian and that the Volturi rule the Vampire world and that you are not vegetarian, They also said Humans are not allowed to know of your world unless they are to become one of you” Ally replies “What?” Caius asks confused “I thought Aro told Carlisle to tell you about us” “He did, just a quick version. I don’t think he wanted to overwhelm me. After all I thought Vampires only existed in books and movies. He was also a bit vague when it came to telling me about the Volturi and what you do” “When you come and visit us at the castle I will give you a history lesson all about us Ally” Caius replied “You mean I’m welcome to come to the castle for a visit?” “Yes Ally and you will be the only human to leave the castle still human, apart from Bella, of course” Caius said with a little smile. “Thank you” She replied smiling “I think you’re starting to like her brother” Marcus said too quiet for Ally to hear “I’m able to tolerate her that is all Marcus” He replied quietly “It’s a start Caius”
A few days later Demetri and Alyssa were back at the cliff edge ready to go to swimming; he wrapped his arm around her lifting her up and she wrapped her legs around him, arms going round his neck. They landed in the water below with her still in his arms and he leant his head down; nose resting against her neck as he breathed in her scent. Her fingers playing with the hair at the base of his neck; he purred and placed a chaste kiss to her pulse point, she smiled and kissed his neck in return. “I should put you down so we can go swimming again, but I really don’t want to… Not yet anyway” He said low in her ear, arms tightening around her “Then don’t. We can swim later, we have all day” She replied running one hand down from his neck to rest on his chest; the other hand still playing with his hair, she gave it a gentle tug. He growled moving one hand to the back of her head threading his fingers into her hair; gently he pulled her head back exposing her neck to him. He ran his nose up and down her neck then left a trail of open mouthed kisses against her neck; she gasped and a soft “Mmm” left her lips, he purred again and felt her fingers brush through his hair, nails gently scratch his scalp. “Mine” He whispered into her ear before placing a kiss just below it. “What?” She breathed “Am I…?” She looked into his eyes “Yes Ally, I’ve never felt like this about anyone before” He looked unsure of himself and took an unneeded breath “Will you be my mate… and… accept me… as your mate in return?” Hope shone in his eyes although his face said he was scared of her answer. She nods and smiles “Yes” She kisses his cheek and wraps her arms around his neck; he sighs in relief tightening his hold on her before kissing her temple “Thank you amore. Thank you” “You don’t need to thank me Dem” She chuckles “I’m happy that I’m yours because it means that you are mine… as long as you accept me… as your mate” She winks at him and he smiles “Of course I accept you as my mate, 110% cara. I’m looking forward to spending forever with you” He kissed her lips and continued to hold her in his arms happy that he finally found his other half.
That evening they took a walk along the beach enjoying the warm night air; stopping to look out at the calm sea as the sun sets. “I feel safe with you Demi” She wraps her arms around him “I’m happy to hear that” He kissed her hair “I will always look out for you Ally, no matter what” He sat in the sand and gently pulled her down with him so she was sitting in front of him, his arms wrapping around her from behind.
Marcus smiles as Demetri and Alyssa walk back into the house hand in hand; seeing the mate bond in effect “Good evening you two, had a good day?” “Good evening Master, we’ve had a great day” He smiles down at Ally lovingly, a look that doesn’t go unnoticed by Aro and Carlisle. “Brother?” Aro asks looking to Marcus; who just nods in response, causing Aro to smile widely. “Demetri, may I?”  Aro asks holding his hand out and Demetri steps forward and places his hand in Aro’s letting him see the moment Ally learnt she was his mate and accepted him.

Will Someone Turn the Heat On Please
Tumblr media
I’ve got a prepared post to finish off my Great Spotted Woodpecker family - the juveniles. It’s in preparation for our new babies which must be coming out soon or soonish. But I thought a break and mixing it up would be better for a blog, so I took some photos out and about yesterday and then in the garden too.
You really wouldn’t think we’re heading towards mid-May would you. There’s a real chill in the air and you need to wrap up. I feel so sorry for all the pubs, bars and restaurants who’ve been told they can finally re-open for business, but only outdoors. I just read a post from a family-run place near Bodiam Castle, they’ve put marquees out in their garden, but one blew away in the storms a couple of nights ago - what bad luck.
Tumblr media
Anyway, our out and about was in the Ashdown Forest where we’d intended to go for a good walk. Well, talk about blowing the cobwebs away! and despite the fabulous far-ranging views, it just wasn’t all that pleasant to be out. There were some hardy souls drinking and dining al fresco, but rather them than me.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I wanted to get amongst the Gorse and test out this idea that it smells of coconut. I’d never noticed it over all the years, but I wrote about it last year and it’s intrigued me ever since. I love the smell of coconut, it’s very evocative of sun kissed beaches and tropical vistas (anyone remember those?) and it’s one of the few ‘fruit and veg’ fragrances that I like in toiletries - I can take cucumber for facial stuff and mint for toothpaste but no, thank you, I don’t want my hair to smell of strawberries or orange.  I digress...
Tumblr media
From the Woodland Trust:
Common gorse can be seen in all kinds of habitats, from heaths and coastal grasslands to towns and gardens. It generally flowers from January to June (although it may flower sporadically throughout the year), while its close relatives - Western gorse and dwarf gorse - flower from July to November. Common gorse is a large shrub and a member of the pea family.
A large, evergreen shrub, covered in needle-like leaves, it has distinctive, coconut-perfumed, yellow flowers during the spring and summer.
It provides shelter and food for many insects and birds, such as Dartford warblers, stonechats and yellowhammers.
Three observations. Yes, its leaves are absolutely like needles, ouch! Yes, you can see that the flowers are of the pea family but No, it’s not that easy (at the moment) to detect the coconut fragrance. I think it is there, very faintly, but suspect we need some lovely warm sunshine to bring it out properly.
Tumblr media
I should’ve taken this photo yesterday before the flowers started to dry out
Tumblr media
It was too cold to linger so I persuaded Crow to stop at a garden centre. Goodness me, prices have shot up. I invested in two Thyme plants to replace what I have in pots outside. It’s been there for years and is rather woody now, although still thriving, so perhaps supplement rather than replace: I’m awful at getting rid of stuff. I think the ones I have are a basic common Thyme, it’s a greyish green and cream leaf and a Lemon Thyme, which is green and gold.
Tumblr media
My recent purchases: two types of Thyme, Basil and a Pasque Flower
RHS site info below
Thymus are evergreen woody-based perennials, shrub or sub-shrubs with small aromatic leaves and terminal whorls of small, 2-lipped, tubular, purple, pink or white flowers in late spring or summer
Tumblr media
Silver Posie'  (above) is a dwarf, erect, bushy, variegated shrub to 30cm tall with narrowly ovate, lemon-scented, dark green leaves with white margins. Pale lilac-pink flowers are produced in whorls in summer
'Aureus' is a bushy evergreen shrublet to 20cm in height, becoming spreading and more open with age, with small, bright yellow, lemon-scented leaves and erect, interrupted spikes of tiny pale lilac flowers
Tumblr media
When we got home I looked on line at the garden centre’s site and was amazed to see that the one plant I had picked out - not being familiar with it at all - is actually featured in their news as Plant of the Moment...never let it be said I don’t have my finger on the pulse!
You can see it Here on their website.
I’d love to make a true Cottage Garden flower bed, but alas fear it would just be haute cuisine for the resident Rabbit population. Speaking of which

Did someone call?

Tipping the seed tray for every last bit
We didn’t have many Rabbits last year and the Squirrels have given us a bit of a break only to return with all the guile and cheek of old. The Bulrush fat ball feeder is now missing one of its leaves and I need to attempt a repair job. That didn’t last long did it. Thugs!

RANDOM BITS FROM THE GARDEN:
Tumblr media
A little bit of early evening sunshine and the Silver Birch taken from the house (so on a long zoom)
Tumblr media
Silver birch has both male and female flowers (catkins) on the same tree.
The male catkins are formed in the autumn and will remain on the tree all winter – only opening in April or May. The female catkins appear in spring with the new shoots.
Tumblr media
A very puffed up Blue Tit at the bird bath
Tumblr media
The Magpie came with a mate yesterday but of course, as soon as I picked up the camera, there was only one in shot
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And the one lonely female Pheasant visiting us at the moment has as much space as she desires. Not sure why I feel a bit sorry for her, she’s getting the pick of everything.
Tumblr media
WHAT DID I LEARN TODAY?
There are over 300 thyme varieties in the mint family of Lamiaceae, of which thyme is a member. I really didn’t know that.
If you want to know more about varieties of Thyme, here’s a Link to Gardeners’ World - one day I might even attempt a carpet planting like Sissinghurst has And if that’s not enough for you, take a look at something special on my other page HERE.
PS Late News
I forgot to post photos of tadpoles that I took at Bateman’s last week. I forgot to say that on the way home yesterday afternoon we saw a large Tawny Owl in a tree overhanging our lane and also that I saw the Goldcrest in the Christmas tree earlier today...it’s not often you can say you were watching two Coal Tits and all of a sudden they dwarfed another bird!!
EDIT:
Tadpole and other photos can be seen on my other page HERE

MERIDA: A KITCHY KITCHEN GUIDE
Want Claire’s entire guide to Merida? Check out her PDF!
WHY MERIDA?
The Landscape:
Mérida lies about 20 miles from the Gulf of Mexico on the Yucatán, and about 100 miles from numerous Mayan ruins. Cenotes, primal sink holes that act as oases in the sweltering jungle, dot the map to the south and east through the peninsula. Proximity to wilderness and proximity to history gives Mérida the qualities of uno pueblo magico – a place where the modern, colonial and indigenes intersect in a pouring out of creativity and yes, magic. Our driver Daniel explains as we buzz through the parched bush of the Yucatán, that uno pueblo magico also has excellent food and artisans, touched by the Mayan equivalent to the muses. This sounds perfect to me, who’s coming to Mérida for a weekend of relaxation, and perhaps a little magico.
THE STAY
The michelin guide has a famous criterion for three stars, “Exceptional cuisine, worth a special journey.” To me, Coqui Coqui is an exceptional experience, worth a special journey to the heart of the Yucatán. Nestled on the bathroom counter of models, celebrities, and hip urbanites, the perfumery’s products are distinct in their jungle meets old world elegance aesthetic. Their scents conjure up images of colonial haciendas, overrun with the flora and fauna of the Yucatán, Coqui Coqui’s base of operations and source for inspiration and ingredients. The line of thirteen scents extends from candles and perfumes to bath oils, linen sprays and custom amenities for each of their four residences, each of which has a personalized fragrance. Tulum is dewy coconut, Coba is lush and green mint, Vallodolid is roses dried with tobacco, and Mérida is the scent of cigar box, inspired by the surrounding tobacco plantations.
The residence in Mérida is why I’m here. The last time I was in Tulum, I enjoyed a few meals at Coqui Coqui and was immediately charmed. The style was effortless and worn in, the tiny perfumery was an unexpected gem on that stretch of beach, and the chicken mole sandwiches were enough to sell me on their own. My trip to Tulum overall was not the quiet journey I was hoping for, but it introduced me to the Yucatán – it’s food, history, and culture – and that was something I wanted to explore further. Coqui Coqui had residences dotted across the peninsula, and I had heard of Mérida, the capital of the Yucatán state, as a pastel oasis in the jungle. Trusting that planning a trip around a Coqui Coqui residence would be worth it, I booked the trip. The hotel was full for almost every night of my window, but I was able to secure a spot. I booked the rest of my trip at the other premier boutique hotel and spa in Mérida, Rosas y Xocolate.
Arriving at Coqui Coqui, near Parque de Santa Lucia in the heart of Mérida, my husband and I enter through the L’Epicerie, a small boutique shimmering with Coqui Coqui’s bottles of perfume and glass candles. Beatrice, the manager, welcomes us. An Italian expat living in Mérida, she’s effortlessly chic but matter-of-fact in tone. Throughout my stay I pepper her with questions, running my itinerary past her to make sure it passes muster. Fortunately there are only a few adjustments she suggests. We’ve arrived early, so we take a seat in the spa courtyard, a cement tiled space shaded by lofty plastered walls and vines. The cook brings out a little cake and a selection of signature teas for us to try, offering some local honey to go with it. The space is small but maximized. Sitting on a 4000 square foot lot (and this is just me eyeballing it), the residence is indeed a home. Completely private with 15 foot walls, every inch serves a purpose. The marble kitchen opens onto the patio for easy access, the fountain echoes off of the tile near the outdoor bathtub and one room spa; stairs curls up to an outdoor breakfast patio, and further still to a wading pool. When we get to our room, it occurs to me that this is all for just us.
The residence is a one room hotel, where the guest gets the entire upstairs floor and patio to themselves. The room itself is gorgeously appointed in a stripped down, colonial style. High ceilings with rich drapes accenting the cement tile floor and minimalist decor, I got practically giddy as I bounced around the easily thousand square foot space. The canopy bed was large with soft, thin sheets; there were two gigantic bath tubs side by side, and then there was the amenities bag. I’m not above lusting over the free soap at a hotel, and I hoarded the contents of this bag like dragon’s gold. A mini bath oil and perfume in both Tabaco and Flor de Naranjo, hand soaps in both scents, custom shampoo and conditioner, and even chic little toothbrushes in tortoise and black were squirreled away into my suitcase immediately. We then walked out to the pool patio and lingered there for the afternoon.
The next morning were our spa treatments – deep tissue massages in the downstairs space. Every scent is laid out as a massage oil, including scents that are rare or hard to find back in the states. I chose Rosas Secas, which smells like an earthy fresh rose with a hint of tobacco. It’s almost impossible to find a perfect rose scent that doesn’t go powdery, soapy, or grandma’s purse, but Rosas Secas was minimalist and modern. Before the massage, you can soak in the large bath by the fountain (it’s in a very private back corner of the property) to loosen and warm up your muscles. The massage itself is deep and effective, while still being relaxing. It’s presented in an a la carte manner – no hot stones or add ons, which feels appropriate for the simplicity of the space. The other options on the spa menu include a one hour Swedish massage ($90) and a one hour organic facial made with oatmeal, honey and avocado (also $90). Loose, relaxed, and smelling wonderful, we left Coqui Coqui for a day in town.
SAFETY & TRANSPORTATION
Walking southward on the thronging Calle 58 in search of hamacas, jumping off the side walk into the street to avoid bumping abuelas exiting the bus or panaderas selling their wares, I paused at Calle 73. In two blocks I had gone from hot, noisy, and crowded to breezy silent emptiness, excluding the dozens of ladies of the night hovering on the sidewalks. That’s how quickly Mérida can change. One block is Easter Egg colonial mansions and the next is empty tiendas with “for rent” signs. It’s a technicolor checkerboard. As a rule, the farther norther you go, especially via the major avenues, the tonier (and honestly, more boring) you get. All of a sudden the panaderas are replaced by Starbucks (I counted three in a ten minute cab ride), and the high-end restaurants are in curated strip malls. The farther south you go, the less developed, commercial, and safe it gets. The happy balance is in el centro, near the Casa Montejo, where the plazas, shops, and snacks, coalesce into the perfect hour long walk. Mérida is on a convenient grid system, with odd numbered streets running east/west and even numbered streets running north/ south. It’s almost impossible to find street numbers, so most places are described by the cross streets. The city is quite safe north of Calle 65, but during the evening it’s best to take a taxi if you have to walk more than a few minutes.
WHAT TO PACK
The best time to visit Mérida, or the Yucatán in general, is from the late fall through the spring. That’s when the tropical weather is its least humid and most yielding. No rain and temperatures in the mid 80s welcomed me as the plane touched down twenty minutes from the center of Mérida. The locals kept mentioning how cold it got at night, but I never noticed more than a 15 degree difference – compared to the frigid evening air of Mexico City (dropping from 70 in the day to 40 at night). The tone is quite casual in the day, and just barely less so in the evening, though I didn’t notice any requirements beyond a shirt on your back and shoes on your feet.
Packing List:
1 pair comfortable, chic sandals 1 pair close toed shoes – or climbing down to the cenotes or exploring ancient ruins, my snakeskin slip ons were fine for this, as would be desert boots.
2 light weight shirts – cotton is best.
1 pair shorts
1 pair light pants – linen or silk is ideal.
2 dresses, one light day dress and one slightly more formal one
1 bathing suit
1 light jacket – I had a white Jenni Kayne silk blazer I wore at night.
1 light sweater or shawl – I had a traditional rebozo scarf by Carla Fernandez to throw on when the nights got cold.
A giant hat – The sun can pound on your skin, so a big, light straw hat is best)
Sunglasses – Shield yourself from the sunlight bouncing off the pale colonial buildings.
Sunscreen – I prefer Aesop’s 50 spf sunscreen; great protection with none of the usual additives found in generic sunscreens.
Dry Shampoo – the weather leans toward humid, so expect to use a bunch of this to give your hair texture. Bug Spray – If you’re visiting during the wet season,or immediately after it, make sure to spray yourself before venturing out to areas like the cenotes or ruins.
SHOPPING
Other than camping out inside Coqui Coqui’s L’Espicerie, the shopping in Mérida is varied in quality and style, but not category. The area is best known for its astonishing weavings, and you need to pick up una hamaca (a hammock), una guayabera (men’s linen shirt), una huipil (a women’s embroidered tunic, or any number of baskets, blankets, and rugs.
Note about haggling: Some shops expect haggling, others recoil at it, and it’s pretty easy to tell the difference. Curated shops with hangers and a specifically styled aesthetic tend to have the prices locked in, and if you attempt to haggle you will look awkward and boorish. Shops near the plaza with stack and stacks of rugs next to exploding shelves of pottery expect and encourage a good haggle. The best I managed was 40% off the price tag.
Hammocks: The best hammocks I found (and I went in dozens of shops) were in Guayaberas Tita (Calle 59 between 60 and 62), but Hamacas Maya gets an honorable mention. Not only was there a ton of variety, but Juan, the owner, also does custom orders. I placed my order on the first day of my trip and picked it up on my way to the airport. There are hammocks woven specifically for tourists that are only woven with one line of thread. The result is a rather flimsy contraption that can unspool the second there is a cut or tear anywhere. Locals use the five threaded hammocks, woven with very thin twine for the most comfortable experience. Practically every home in the area has one hanging in its porch, usually occupied during siesta. I longed for a hammock with fringe or tassels, but those typically have pieces of wood forcing the hammock to lie flat. I ended up ordering two hammocks, both with the higher quality five thread weave, in a natural cotton, without madera (wood) and with orilla (tassles), but not macrame, and haggled Juan down to $75 each. The cheaper, single thread hammocks cost closer to $30 each, and the gorgeous sisal ones (an agave fiber) at Coqui Coqui are about $300 each, to give you a comparison.
Guayaberas y Huipil
The guayabera is the iconic Cuban button down, worn untucked, usually paired with a cigar and straw hat, worn by heavies of the early 20th century. After the Cuban revolution, Yucatecans started weaving the popular shirt themselves. For the best ones, try Guayaberas Jack in the center of town (Calle 59 between 60 and 62), but skip on the cheap poly blends. Find the pure linen ones for the most authentic look, and comfort. Huipil are easily found all over the city, but my favorite were at Color Amor (Calle 55 between Calle 56 and Calle 58)
Other artisanal goods:
Coqui Coqui L’Espicerie // Calle 55 between Calle 64 and Calle 66
This is a must stop if spending the day in Mérida. Not only can you pick up a hard to find scent or bath product (I bought both Rosas Secas and Naranjo Negro perfume), you can also find locally created jewelry, and rebozo dresses – made of fabric woven on a waist loom – designed by Francesca Bonato, the co owner of Coqui Coqui. Honestly, I could’ve come to Mérida with the clothes on my back, shopped there, and would have been ready for the rest of my trip.
Kukul Boutik // Calle 55 between Calle 56 and Calle 58
This curated boutique is definitely more put together than the average artisan shop in the area. They carry the usual mix of woven and embroidered pieces, but their woven sisal (agave) pillowcases are especially beautiful.
Casa de las ArtesanaIas // Calle 63 between Calle 64 and Calle 66
This is a definite tourist spot, so don’t expect quality here. However, there is a large selection here and everything is quite inexpensive.
Ki Xocolatl // Calle 53 between Calle 60 and Calle 62 (inside the Parque de Santa Lucia) A belgian chocolatier in the Yucatán started this little chocolate boutique. You can purchase a cup of velvety hot chocolate, but I opted for bars of their pink peppercorn studded chocolate bars instead.
El Estudio // Paseo de Montejo between Calle 41 and Calle 43 (further north, near the Palacio Canton) This boutique has a fun, funky vibe of a 90s Urban Outfitters. Glitter crusted matchbooks emblazoned with a portrait of Frida Kahlo, vibrant skulls, and hand painted glassware fill the shelves.
FOOD & DRINK
: I might be biased by my pseudo-hipster ways, but the most flavorful, most delicious, and best food was from the local spots rather than the white tablecloth restaurants.
Street Food Tips: Stick to the places with the longest lines. If they’re popular, then they aren’t getting people sick regularly. Also look for older, professional types. Doctors, lawyers, and cops can’t afford to get sick from street meat, so they’ll be conservative with where they get their street food. Teenagers, on the other hand, play more fast and loose.
Look around: Does it look clean? Is food left sitting around? Use your eyes and nose to tell you if the food looks good to you. If you’re apprehensive, just walk to the next cart. Better safe than sorry!
Water/Ice: Potable water is an issue in Mexico, so if you’re buying a respado (shaved ice) or an icy drink, make sure it’s from a place that uses filtered water.
Have a plan: I’m a research nut, so I looked up street food spots in Tulum that my favorite food writers and publications recommended. It makes the hunt so much easier!
Marlin Azul // Calle 62 between Calle 57 and Calle 59
This tiny restaurant is possibly the best seafood in Mérida. There are a few different options on the menu, but honestly, when a giant platter of ceviche is in front of you, how can you think of anything else? The habanero salsa is especially good here as well.
El Cangrejito // Calle 57 between Calle 64 and Calle 66
Fish tacos for breakfast? Yes indeed, but a far departure from the Ensenada style. These are fresh, served with different sauces and garnishes. You walk up to the front and just point at whatever fillings you like. We got one of everything: bacalao with capers, fried white fish, camarones ceviche, and my favorite, the langostino.
La Michoacana // Multiple locations
Paletas are a must, and La Michoacana is an easy choice. There’s a rainbow of flavors, but mamey is my favorite. If you’re not familiar, it’s a tropical fruit that’s fuzzy and brown on the outside (not unlike a kiwi) and with a rich red flesh that tastes like sweet potato pie. But hey, I won’t blame you if you go with mango con chile.
El Colón Sorbetes y Dulces Finos // Two locations, up on Paseo de Montejo and in the Zocalo
Situated right across the zócalo (main square), El Colón has been serving freshly made sorbet (without extra sugar and preservatives) for one hundred year. The tables on the sidewalk are perfect for people watching and cooling off on a sweltering Meridian afternoon. I ordered my favorite, mamay, but try the guava or tamarindo for a bright kick.
Apaola // Calle 53 between Calle 60 and Calle 62 (inside the Parque de Santa Lucia)
Combining Mexican, Oaxacan, and Yucatecan influences, Apaola is a favorite restaurant amongst travelers. Located inside Parque de Santa Lucia, the restaurant spills out onto a lovely courtyard. The menu is filled with modern fusion dishes (the appetizers were best, so I’d recommend ordering more of those), so don’t expect to find cochinita pibil on the menu. The mezcal and tequila selection is excellent, and the restaurant is very popular, so make sure to make reservations.
Tacos at Wayané, Mérida, Mexico // The corner of Calle 20 and Calle 15 just north of the Parque de Itzimná
Pronounced “why-en-AY,” the name is Mayan for, “here we are.” That’s the perfect name for this taco stand, a favorite amongst locals. This is an almuerzo spot. It’s not breakfast or lunch, but mid morning snack time. The Loría family have run the Wayan’e street stand for 20 years. They serve savory tacos and tortas throughout the morning, scooping flavorful fillings like smoky chicken fajitas and scrambled eggs with Swiss chard out of clay pots that customers point to. All dishes are from 8 to 12 pesos. Everything is cooked fresh every morning and when the food is gone, the place closes down for the day, usually by 2:00 pm. It’s a drive from the center of town, so expect to taxi.
Néctar // Av. Andrés García Lavín, between Calle 41 and Calle 43
Mérida’s newest haute cuisine restaurant is Nectar, where the ambitious chef Roberto Solis, having done time in the kitchens of Noma, Per Se, and the Fat Duck, plays with indigenous flavors and French techniques. My favorite dish was actually the dessert, which played with texture of coconut and was dusted with charred rosemary.
K’u’uk // Paseo de Montejo and Calle 27A (on the round about)
Taking haute cuisine a step further, K’u’uk presents symbolic and metaphoric dishes, relating to Mayan culture. Chef Pedro Evia utilizes locally sourced ingredients and inventive modern gastronomy to create a palette bending experience. If you’re going to do one “big meal” on your trip to Mérida, go here.
Chaya Maya // On the corner of Calle 57 and Calle 62
I’m usually leery of restaurants where servers dress up in traditional costumes, seeing it as a ploy for tourists, but Chaya Maya is actually enjoyed by the local population as well. This place is all about the Yucatán, so go for Los Tres Mosqueteros, or The Three Musketeers, for a nice overview of three classic Yucatecan dishes: relleno negro (a black sauce made from burnt chiles and spices) over pork; papadzul (egg enchiladas); and pipián (a sauce with a pumpkin seed base) over turkey. There are several other locations, but I like this one’s low key energy
Kii Wik // Avenida Garcia Lavin and Calle 37-B
From the team behind K’u’uk, Kii Wik is a small cafe in the tonier part of town. It’s pretty busy, but has excellent coffee and chilequiles, along with a cute bakery and gourmet shop.
Oliva Enoteca & Kitchen // On the corner of Calle 47 & Calle 54
If you don’t feel like Mexican, Oliva is a beautiful choice. With wine personally selected by the Chef to complement the cuisine, and modern rustic dishes that include an array of burrata, lemon scented ricotta with shrimp, daily fish, and simple antipasti, it’s a beautiful bit of Europe in the heart of the Yucatán.
Poxeria // Paseo de Montejo between Calle 41 and Calle 43 (further north, near the Palacio Canton)
Located next door to El Estudio (the boutique I mentioned above), we stumbled across this coffee and pox (pronounced posh) shop quite unexpectedly. The coffee is from Chiapas and honestly, the best we had in Mérida. Pox is an interesting choice when you’re over mezcal – it’s corn based and tastes quite a bit like moonshine, which isn’t surprising considering that it’s 53% ABV.
Hacienda Teya // Mérida-Cancún Highway, Kilometer 12.5 (about 20 minutes outside of Mérida)
Inside this 17th-century plantation that switched from cattle to henequen, used for making rope, at the end of the 19th century, is a boisterous family restaurant. Large tables are packed with families enjoying a post-misas (we were there on Sunday) meal. Surprisingly, there were no tourists, just locals. Try the classics like sopa de lima, or the sample platter that includes cochinita pibil, Puntas de filete al xcatic, and poc chuc.
SIGHTS
Catedral de Mérida // Calle 60 between Calle 61 and Calle 63
This almost 500 year old Cathedral hovers over the city center, with a constant flow of observants moving in and out of its imposing doors. Finished in 1598, the cathedral is a combination of late renaissance and early baroque styles, with obvious influence from the Roman and Moorish tinged Andalusia.
Casa de Montejo // Calle 63 between Calle 60 and Calle 62
A bank is now housed behind the brilliant façade of this extremely rare example of 16th century civil architecture, but take a step in, and you’ll find a small free museum featuring seasonal exhibits and a preserved dining room from the original house. The ceiling frescoes are gorgeous and the gift shop is actually a lovely mix of artisanal products that aren’t seen anywhere else in the city.
Palacio Cantón // Paseo de Montejo between Calle 41 and Calle 43
Nestled in the center of Paseo de Montejo, an avendue lined with henequen funded Beaux Arts-style mansions, lies the Palacio Cantón. Built in the first decade of the twentieth century as a family residence for General Canton (one of the most prominent figures of his time), it now houses the Mayan Anthropological Museum. Since 1980, its permanent exhibition about the pre-Hispanic Mayan society is presented on the main floor, with exhibitions, educational workshops and cultural events offered upstairs.
Chichén Itzá
An hour and a bit away from Mérida The stepped pyramids, temples, columned arcades, and other stone structures of Chichén Itzá were sacred to the Maya, and the center of their spiritual life from A.D. 750 to 1200. Go in the afternoon, when the Temple of Kukulkan, also known as El Castillo, reveals itself in the light. This impressive step pyramid demonstrates the accuracy and importance of Maya astronomy, which is specifically oriented to catch the light, creating the illusion of an undulating feathered snake going down the steps. This even happens in the afternoon, and is easier to see the closer you are to the spring solstice. The previous structure was 17 degrees off, so the Mayans made an adjustment, and 52 years later (as dictated by their calendar to be a full period cycle) corrected it with the structure that now stands. The whole complex is awe inspiring in scope, especially when you realize they built it without the use of wheels. We wandered over to the ball court, the largest in the Americas measuring 554 feet long and 231 feet wide. These ritual games were a spiritual rite, with two teams of seven trying to hit a rubber ball through an impossible looking small, high hoop. The winner was put to death, a fact that a German couple on the tour with us refused to believe. It was considered an honor to die, as the games were for the gods’ glory, and not the players.
Cenotes
There are cenotes all of the region, but the one we stopped by on our way back from Chichén Itzá, near Yokdzonot. A cenote is a natural pit, or sinkhole, that exposes groundwater underneath, sometimes used by the ancient Maya for sacrificial offerings (usually women who would jump in as an sacrifice to the water god, Chaac). Now they’re open as little oases in the jungle heat. There are three different types of cenotes: jug cenotes, with a small hole at the top; cave cenotes, where you enter through a cave; and my favorite, cylinder cenotes which have vertical walls. The reason why those are my favorite is a bit vain, but I like how beautifully cylinder cenotes photograph. The light bounces on the light, adventurous swimmers can dive in from high up the side, and tree roots dangle overhead. Skip Progresso Beach, which is very privatized and a bit of a challenge to navigate if you’re unfamiliar with the area, and jump into a cenote instead.

Packing Essentials for Traveling
Tumblr media
Packing properly for a trip is more important than some people would think. While I used to be one of those last minute packers who would laugh at other who overly planned out what they were bringing, I learned quickly that karma is real. Nothing is more annoying than being in a different country with the wrong kind of clothing and having to buy basic things that I could have easily brought. I still have vivid memories of being in France, freezing to death because I assumed March in Normandy would be summer temperatures. After that experience, I vowed to never be the reason for my own pain and suffering due to my poor packing skills.
Now before trips I force myself to sit down and actually think about what I would practically need to bring. I read about the climate of my destination, the types of activities I want to participate in and pick a suitable sized bag for my trip. For the last number of long-term trips I have taken, I have only taken a backpack and a Tommy Hilfiger cloth bag. Everyone thought I was crazy for bring so little, but the truth is, it is not necessary to pack a lot on a trip as long as you are smart about what you bring. Packing for a vacation of 2 weeks or 2 months should be very similar as long as you do laundry frequently.
Over the years of travelling in North America, Europe, Africa, South America, and the Caribbean, this is a list of the things I’ve noticed that I must bring on a trip with me. Note that I usually am packing for solo trips that are at least one month long, and I pack very lightly. The things that I recommend are because of my travelling style. If I were to visit a resort for a week, I would have a completely different list of essentials.
Packing Essentials
Facial/Baby Wipes
These are really important for people who will go on long flights or who spend a long time travelling in general. I always feel disgusting when I can’t wash my face, and it gets super oily. Having wipes allows me to feel somewhat clean during long periods when I can’t shower. My face always breaks out whenever I don’t clean it frequently, thanks to facial wipes I no longer have this problem. I also hate going to bed with dirty feet and baby wipes are great for that because usually hostel showers are really gross.
Microfiber Towel
This is the second most important packing essential because it saves so much space. Regular towels are massive and heavy, they do not dry quickly and are annoying to travel with. Getting a microfiber towel allows you to pack lightly and bring two towels- one for the shower and one for the beach. I can’t leave the country without my microfiber towel.
Coconut Oil
Everyone seems to be obsessed with coconut oil these days, but that is probably because it is the most useful product. It works as a make up remover, hair mask, cooking oil, moisturizer, and cleaner. I like to bring a small amount to use as a facial cleanser and as a hair mask before I shower.
Dry Shampoo/Baby Powder
If you haven’t noticed my packing list is modeled after how to stay clean while not showering. Showering everyday, especially while travelling is unnecessary. Using either dry shampoo or baby powder is an easy beauty hack. Baby powder also works well for women to use to prevent their thighs rubbing together when they walk.
Body Spray
Perfume is a waste of space and it has such a strong scent that most people will find unpleasant. Bringing a small bottle of body spray however is a great alternative to keeping your scent fresh. I prefer coconut body sprays because they are not overly strong and it usually mixes well with other scents.
Adapters and a Portable Charger
Different areas of the world have different outlets; not bringing an outlet adapter could be a hassle to try to find one abroad. Save yourself the frustration and buy one at home, and research what kind of an adapter you need. A portable charger is really important because if you phone battery is terrible, as most are, you could find yourself in irritating situations. If you rely on your phone a lot while travelling, having a dead phone with no way to access directions back to the hotel could be a nightmare for some travelers.
A Rain Jacket
This is a very obvious item, but I will draw attention to it because umbrellas are really heavy. Do not waste space bringing one. Everyone always assumes that the weather will be good while travelling, but that isn’t true. It will always rain. During my time in The Dominican Republic, during November it poured viciously for almost the entire month. I didn’t bring a good rain jacket and regretted this every single time I left the hostel. So please, learn from my mistakes get a lightweight rain jacket, with a hood that is waterproof. Do not buy the more fashionable ‘water resistant’ jacket, you will regret that deeply.
A Water Bottle
In many places in the world tap water is not safe to drink and carrying a water bottle around is essential to not being constantly dehydrated. Even in places that you would expect the water to be clean like Paris, it is advised to not drink from the tap. Buy big bottles of water from the super market and use the water bottle that you brought to take water with you on your daily excursions. Staying hydrated is important; so many times I’ve almost fainted because I thought bringing my water bottle with me would make my backpack too heavy. I have done a lot of foolish things while travelling.
Snacks
Yes, these can be purchased abroad and are not necessarily an ‘essential’ but for me they are because airport food is so expensive and I get really hungry. When I land in a new country, the first thing I want to do is get to my hostel and I do not want to go searching for food with all of my stuff. It is easier to bring a few protein bars to make sure the hungriness goes away.
Travel Sized Laundry Detergent
Usually it is really easy to buy detergent in a different country, but I have come across difficulties finding this before. I like to bring a little bit with me just so if my clothes get dirty I am able to clean them right away.
Good Shoes/Shoes for All Occasions
Wear shoes that are fashionable but also pair nicely with different outfits. I like to wear vans because I find them very comfortable to walk in, but athletic shoes are in style making it easy to create somewhat fashionable looks. Also bring more than one pair of shoes; if you get blisters, you will be suffering until it heals. In warmer areas, I would advise bringing a stylish pair of sandals that are good for walking in because they go well with skirts and dresses, and will give you the flexibility to dress up or dress down.
Athletic Clothing
Sporty clothes are a good combination between still maintaining style while being able to do all of the activities that travel requires. They are breathable, comfortable, and are versatile when it comes to different weathers.
Underwear
This also seems like an obvious thing to pack, however bring a lot of it. Nothing is more irritating then not having clean underwear. At least pack enough for a two week cycle, but I always bring more because I have a constant fear of running out of clean underwear.
Peanut Butter
This seems like a strange thing to bring, but in Europe and other countries peanut butter isn’t really popular. Serving as a great source of protein, I really enjoy my daily serving of peanut butter and sometimes pack it.
A Notebook
This comes in handy on so many occasions, to write down directions, suggestions of things to do, peoples contact information. Especially when my phone dies, my notebook comes in handy to take down notes. When I flew into Colombia a few months ago, a Colombian sitting beside me started speaking to me in Spanish. After realizing that I was flying into a country with no plans, he started giving me so many suggestions of the best places to visit in the country. If I didn’t have my notebook with me, I would have missed some of the amazing recommendations that he shared.
A Sweater
Even in super hot places, like Cuba and The Dominican Republic, I have been happy that I brought a sweater. Especially if you are travelling for a long period of time, you will acclimatize to your destination and will have a changed sense of hot and cold. Just be prepared for all possible weather conditions.
