….you posted your tattoo (sick) and linked to house of dirk and i read it all and its unfinished. if you hadn’t posted i may have lived my life without getting fanfic blue balled for the first time since 2015. if you have any sympathy for my loss you would give me fanfic recs >:[ /lh
I feel your pain believe me 😭😭 I’m sorry I didn’t warn you at least. I’m low-key hoping the tattoo image gets to imarriedacherub and inspires them to continue the story - obviously not likely but it’s nice to dream!
I got recs for you though! I’ve got hundreds of bookmarks on my ao3 but here’s the HS stuff I love the most:
The epics:
Dayvhe’s Broken Diamond Club and everything by @unda-dsk: DBDC is my personal fave of theirs, and the best treatment of troll culture in any fic ever. If you know HS fic you are probably aware of MC Escher That’s My Favorite MC, and that one is absolutely excellent and completely deserves its status as one of the very best. And then there’s Alternate Universe, which is a perfect and beautiful magic school story. All of these are absolutely top-tier - I cannot stress this enough. They are epic and very long but some of the best stuff I’ve ever read—fanfic or otherwise—and they changed me when I read them. Despite the length, DBDC is very episodic so you can read each chapter as its own story and easily take breaks in between them without losing the flow, so you might want to start there. I promise it’s worth it!!
so we don’t kill the ones we love by @callmearcturus: I’ve never read anyone who can create an atmosphere like Arc can - this one is kind of a John Wick AU but in a really refreshing and elevated way. The characterization is so on point. Lots more I could rave about but I’ll just add that Arc’s Karkats are the hottest and most based out there. Again all his stuff is really good - this one is my favorite, but don’t miss this really cool magic artisan AU also.
The meteorstucks:
Aahhh there’s no way this is gonna be complete because I’ve read like hundreds and I get them confused but these are some that stand out. In case you haven’t notice already this list is gonna be very davekat centric!
Keep It Down by sburbanite - chef’s kiss concept and execution just read it
A Xenological Exploration of Music and Language by superbloom - super fun and well written with neat headcanon - and turned me on to some great music
I’m actually gonna just declare this section unfinished for now - I need to revisit these and remind myself what’s what - stay tuned!
Illustrated
Since you liked HoD you might be looking for more comic-y stuff with art. Definitely check out @chthonicarcher’s amazing davekats! Such as That’s All We Are
Dream a Little Dream of Me by koroke - this is just a little dream bubble comic but it’s simply the loveliest and I’m massively envious of the art style
Gonna Need Some Windex by the End of the Year by magniloquentChanteuse - more artistic storytelling just neat!
More
It’s About Time by @laurasauras - this is a sweet cute lovely little time travel davekat that I actually sent to a friend to read who knew nothing about HS and successfully led them into the fandom. (Followed by AU by Unda). Laurasauras is prolific and there are so many great fics written by them I can’t list them all here but they are one of my absolute favorite authors. Their understanding of the strider psyche is absolutely impeccable
The Worst Goddamn Movies Ever Fucking Made by writerbot - this fic brought me so much hilarity and joy I can’t even tell you. The Karkat voice is perfect and delightful and the social media interludes are so fucking funny and impressive. One of the first fics to show me how creative and funny this fandom can be.
I’m surely going to add to this - there are so many more meteorstucks and other authors I know I’ll think of after I post this - but I don’t want to spend too much longer on this now when you could be reading some of this great stuff! ENJOY!!

The “Easy” Way...
In the Super Fight, Sourface lets Saitama know that most heroes were looked down on by martial artists because they’re seen as taking the easy way out. While that’s a bit pretentious, I thought I’d try taking a more balanced look at that.
Looks can be deceiving
Edited to add: I need to mention that this anti-hero prejudice goes well beyond the contestants and organisers of the Super Fight. The Swordmasters describe heroes as pest controllers. Bomb thinks of Bang's hero work as trash collection. It's a widespread disdain in that field.
The Scruffy Ones
The martial artists do have a point. They have refined their art from mere violence into something intrinsically precious. There's the discipline of practising kata until they are beautiful and the challenge of using them against opponents. And heroes are pretty slobbish fighters -- it's not just Genos who lacks in defence (Believe me, I’ve looked https://gofancyninjaworld.tumblr.com/post/174948317257/bullseye). As Tank Top Master puts it, monsters just come at you with power and not much else*, so there's no place for refinement. Hero work is about using whatever you have, however you can, as hard as you can. And hit first, or you’re going to be hurting. Some heroes have a refined fighting style but there's no advantage in it.
It’s painfully rare to see anyone, hero or monster, put up a decent guard
To a martial artist, a hero is like a scruffy mongrel. It’s made worse by the fact that some don’t use martial arts at all. Ironically, heroes tend to respect martial artists and the Hero Association is always happy to get someone with a sports or martial arts background as it at least gives candidates a good basis on which to build. When the Bearded Worker was debating whether or not to give Saitama directions to the shelter the DSK was at, the latter’s lack of a sporting or martial arts background was something that worried him. Nevertheless, from a working hero's perspective, a martial artist is like a highly inbred 'working' dog that couldn't actually do a decent day's work.
Both perspectives have a point. In general, competition is both easier and harder than the real life activity it's abstracted from. It's easier because the stakes are a whole heck of a lot lower, there is a lot of predictability and there are clear rules. It’s nice when you’ve got an agreed on time and place, a literal level playing field, and when there’s no bystanders to get hurt. It’s nice when you know your opponent isn’t going to suddenly sprout wings and claws and then disembowel you. And you can always tap out (whether or not you do is another question). It's harder because as a competition, it's necessary to score relatively minor things more harshly meaning that it encourages a fine discipline. The series is dodging the problem of showing good quality martial arts fights by making most bouts rapid knock outs, heh heh. Yeah, if you came to see good fights, I’m sorry.
Snek and Max have a good attitude to it: the Super Fight is a break from regular hero work and an opportunity to challenge themselves to keep their skills sharp. Although he’d still have lost, Max made a big mistake in trying out his anti-monster, guard-free moveset on Suiryu: that was like saying ‘kick me, I’m stupid.’
Don’t forget the basics
“And if a monster appeared in front of you, like this, what would you do?”
At this point, I’m sure anyone still reading must be thinking I totally hate heroes. Of course not. So let’s go into the differences and what makes heroes heroes.
The first and least important reason is that monsters are not human.
As Garou has found out, the trouble with martial arts is that it teaches you first and foremost to deal with opponents who are human-sized, human-shaped and who move and react like human beings. Monsters aren’t obliged to follow that convenient script, so there’s a steep learning curve to become a proficient monster-killer.
One might argue that Watchdogman is merely monstrous, but the object lesson still holds
The more important one is that heroes save lives. The Super Fight exists in large part to make the point that while the martial artists like to think of themselves as warriors, reality is very different. The manga sets up the framework by cutting back and forth between the urgent, difficult and unpredictable work that heroes are doing and the sterile charade of the tournament. Already in episode 5 (or 17), JC Staff missed a huge opportunity by failing to include the scene of Heavy Kong facing off against Marshal Gorilla. Two cheering crowds for two very different reasons.
Cheering for fun vs. cheering for your life
While others have bemoaned the loss of the parallel to be drawn between Genos going through the monsters in C City and the tournament bouts, I’ll add something to it. Where the parallel really becomes clear is in the physical copy of the manga, where facing pages show how tiny the tournament bouts are in relation to the hero work happening outside.**
When the layout is a meta-commentary in itself
The really painful part is that they appeared to start setting up the framing as with the manga (note all the black space as the tournament bout takes up less than half the screen, mirroring that in the manga), and then ran out of time, panicked and dumped things on the screen as fast as they could go.
I’d have liked to use Dave, but they couldn’t keep even that consistent
Damnit, I promised myself that I wouldn’t rant about the anime. We go on!
But by far the most important reason is that heroes put themselves second. If you had told Sourface and the rest of the martial artists that if a monster were to appear before them, they’d stand there paralysed and unable to do a thing to help others or themselves, they’d have denied its possibility hotly. If you had told Suiryu that he’d be reduced to the same state as soon as he took a few good hits, he’d never ever have wrapped his mind around it. The paralytic reaction isn’t out of stupidity or cowardice: it’s just normal humanity in the face of fear and overwhelming danger.
“It’ll never happen to me”
Heroes do the incredibly tough job of breaking out of that strong desire to preserve oneself to face even crazy danger if anyone can benefit from it.***
Whether or not they’d do the same for us is irrelevant
Most critically, heroes continue to face enemies even when they know they have no chance of victory whatsoever. As long as it matters to someone, even a little.
No illusions
This then, is the true difference between the contestants of the Super Fight, their ilk and heroes. Not all heroes use martial arts of any sort. In OPM, hero fights are often quite ugly (spectacular but rarely pretty or strategic). But heroes are all about the impact their work has, however they achieve it. For that, they’re willing to stake their lives.
The moment Suiryu understood that difference was the moment he had a Damascene conversion. Fortunately, Saitama was around to ensure he survived to hopefully make something of this new understanding.
<20: Far from being the ‘easy’ way, hero work is incredibly tough. It’s just not pretty.
Asides
* That said, we do see a few monsters who do possess fighting strategy: Deep Sea King, Face Ripper, Awakened Cockroach... Hmm... funny that, they seem to disproportionately target Genos. Ah well, growth opportunities! :D
** I’m sure I’m not alone in enjoying the fact that a guy famous for refusing to train in a dojo is both mirroring and overshadowing the hard-won techniques of people who call themselves artists. There’s nothing mystical about the principles of martial arts -- it’s the study of what works in fights at the end of the day.
*** I know I said I wouldn’t rant, but I’m really irritated at how poorly JC Staff handled Lightning Genji’s predicament. Then again, neither in the manga nor in the anime was any bystander depending on Genji to hold fast.
#meta#anime#manga#Super Fight#heroes#martial arts#the difference between reality and theory#still annoyed at how badly JC Staff has missed the point of the tournament arc#OPM#One Punch Man

In case one hasn't seen the comment for my Final Fantasy XII Esper Battle Remix: The core-idea behind this 'mashup' is the fact, that I handle my OC / character in FFXIV as a child of the Esper Zodiac alias Zodiarche. And as VI's Terra Brandford demonstrates, even a Half-Esper has access to another form than just the humane shape.
My fanmade track here mostly fixates on the way how XII's Esper Battle functions, but has the iconic first tunes of XIV's Ishgard-theme as well as a part of the Great Wyrm battle-song (Primogenitor) due to the connection this character of mine has to these 'pangolins' in the Fanfic I write. (That text is named after the dragon's theme.)
Also, I could not ignore the temptation to tinker an opening for my piece of music – I hope it's acceptable despite that weird choir. ^_^” :really have a weakness for choirs: --- Apart from that, another aspect bothers me; namely the similarity to the way how Pokémon-battle-themes are arranged. It's not like that would be completely off-key since I handle my OC Cecilia as the reincarnation of an OC from my personal Pokémon-universe, yet I had not aimed for that impression while creating the theme.

-Full view of my character's optional form: https://melodycrystel.deviantart.com/art/Concept-Final-Fantasy-Fanmade-Esper-Primal-704395150
----
However, I'm not yet decided if and how I would use my character's optional form in the fanfic.
She might appear to be a primal via the necessity of being summoned as one, but she doesn't consume for that purpose aether like the real eikons do. Granting her this form costs MP – just a much larger amount than an ordinary Carbuncle would need – and can't be triggered by everybody as they please.
->In fact, this form requires a prayer which must come from the hearts of those who think of her – who want to keep her safe and would even throw their lives away in order to save her. Thanks to that, she also doesn't lose her personality and outdoes in aspects of stamina- plus power-handling even Lady Iceheart alias Ysayle.
As Zodiac's child, she is tied to the darkness, but as an reincarnation of somebody who you could describe as an personification of 'black light', her element would not directly be the same type her father controls. Also, her mortal mother was a being of light, which is reflected in Cecilia's traits and thoughts. Therefore, she as an Esper is a symbol for gloam/twilight/eclipse or whatever name would fit at the most.
In an alternate story-line – to give you an idea how her powers do work – she would bravely fight against Nidhogg in order to save Estinien.
But one of the dark-wyrm's subordinates would take a hand in their duel despite his master's orders. That dragon killed Cecilia and caused with that action a wave of desperation in all humans on the battlefield who held her dear. These people would silently cry in their paralysis – and their unspoken prayers made her corpse glow in discreet light.
Yet, the most significant prayers would come from Midgardsormr as he cherished this single mortal more than any other in the world – and one single tear running over Nidhogg's cheek in spite of Estinien's huge grief would be the sign for strong sympathy which the dark-wyrm himself had developed. This should turn out to be the last drop for activating her origin as an Esper.
In other words, the humane hopes would heal her body's damages and awaken her optional form, while the two dragon-prayers were the force to restore her life. Even if Eorzea's dragons are different, the kind itself is heavily related to Cecilia since her father is in fact a winged serpent-dragon – so the wish of both Midgardsormr and Nidhogg can in her case even outmatch death.
Yet, this power can be destructive when it's uncontrolled / unsupervised by her.
In another alternate, the character would lose hope while fighting against Nidhogg. Not because of her fear to being unable to safe Estinien, but because she held affection for the wyrm in her heart.
The vanishing hope wouldn't prevent her from shielding the weakened dragon when a Machinist fired at him, but the desperation to feel her life drifting away caused her to give up all good on the planet. While her altruistic gesture benumbed Nidhogg, Cecilia's lost faith would trigger her soul to be responding to the darkness existing in the whole world – and turning it into some kind of Black Dwarf which Hydaelyns counterpart Zodiark took advantage on.
He altered the soul, so that it became a huge White Hole in the sky under Zodiark's will and emitted from its dark core yellow twilight over Coerthas while it's gravity pushed everything more and more away. Seeing this, Midgardsormr would switch from the tiny shape to his mount-high form; keeping the amok-running horde-dragons in check and warning Aymeric to bring all mortals away from this place. When the old dragon would mourn aloud the Au Ra, whereby Estinien's feelings were strengthened, Nidhogg would finally snap out of his paralysis.
As the mortals fled, the wyrm would finally recognize their pain with an opened heart, because Cecilia's wish to keep him safe had touched his core deeply. Through that push of emotions, he would brave the agony to fly to the White Hole and put his wings around the congealed soul; telling Cecilia to calm down as the only thing he could sense from her was pure terror. The dragon prayed for a miracle; a way to save her – and his father shared the wish entirely.
Their hope was enough to break Zodiark's chains on her soul, but apart from restoring her life, without a prayer of the humans she wouldn't take her Esper-shape and stay unconscious for a while. That is, because the two dragons would still be just two beings – and share above all no connection with her that would give them the possibility to trigger the optional form.
The clue about Cecilia's power is in fact the emotion another person feels for her. But that's just one side of the medal – the other side are her feelings for the person summoning the Esper-force. In theory, a single person can grant her the Esper-status if a strong, conscious bond connects them. This has indeed been proven by her father, yet his action was rather lending powers to his beloved child than praying for her – therefore, it doesn't count.

Welcome to Art of Us
A year-old idea recently came into fruition. This idea revolved around giving the children of Project PEARLS a positive “outlet” from their harsh environments. Project PEARLS is an NGO that aims to alleviate children from slum communities out of poverty through education and health. Its main community is Helping Land of Tondo, Manila in which the children not only live in a garbage dumpsite but also depend on garbage for food.
Over dinner in summer 2016, Bernie Bernacer of the Company and I discussed how a positive outlet for PEARLS could be art– or, more specifically– dance. What if we could show kids that dance has the power to help one cope through everyday hardships? We strongly believed that by providing tools to develop this positive outlet, it would divert these children from choosing rougher paths.
Also, mainstream dance in Manila isn’t always age-appropriate. Kids copy what they see, including our Project PEARLS kids who already super duper love to dance. One of our goals was to show them that dance can be more– it can be an extension of who they are, what they feel, and what they strive for.
This idea grew as the Art of Us team did. Soon enough, Russell Benzon of The Company chimed in as well as Chris@Empire, Aiko@Empire, and Ray@Empire. We further discussed how to stabilize the idea. We all agreed on the two goals, but how do we go about it? We then began planning a dance summit for Helping Land: The Company would pick three choreographers who would 1) host workshops for the PEARLS kids and 2) prepare them to perform for the Project PEARLS seventh anniversary celebration.
But who would those three choreographers be? After weeks of deliberation, The Company director Pat Cruz selected Jolo Cabrera, KJ Estudillo, and Melissa Batesting.
It is clear to see why the three are perfect candidates. In the video above, each one of them expressed how dance impacted their lives for the better and that they want to give the PEARLS kids an opportunity to experience that. Melissa said:
Dance is my refuge
and it could be the refuge that these kids need.
Just like that, Art of Us grew even more. We had our goals, we had our plan, and we had a set team. All we needed was the funding to make all the above happen.
That’s how you– our supporters– became part of our Art of Us journey.
First, we at Empire in the Air hosted the “Art of Us” showcase this past February to fundraise (click here for recap) and it was a full house!
Then, in a course of months, generosity fueled Art of Us through GoFundMe and post-shares. As I said in the beginning, this year-old idea recently came into fruition. We owe a lot of that to you.
by Ray@Empire
On August 11, the three Company members and three Empire members arrived in Manila to unfold Art of Us from an idea into reality. And, from that day forward, strong relationships flourished between the Art of Us team and the Project PEARLS community.
Feeding Hungry Bellies
Regardless of photos and stories, the environment in Helping Land is difficult to fathom. It was the first time in the Philippines for Aiko and Mel, the first time staying in Manila for Jolo and KJ, and the first time going to the Philippines without family for Ray. As my mom founded Project PEARLS, I find myself in Manila often, however, walking through Helping Land to reach the PEARLS learning center never gets easier.
Jolo admitted that walking through Helping Land put him in a state of shock and sadness. But, as we approached the PEARLS center, hope rose once the children’s laughter and smiles surrounded us. It was as if we were entering a “sanctuary,” he said.
Every time we entered the PEARLS center, each of us gained a role for this “sanctuary.” The first role was to feed our community by participating in the PEARLS Daily Soup Kitchen:
For children living in extreme poverty, breakfast can be their one and only meal. A meal that can define if they will survive or not. This is a heartbreaking reality that Project PEARLS aims to change. Through our Feeding Programs, we want to provide a delicious and nutritious meal to children to help decrease the incidence of malnourishment.
Daily Soup Kitchen (Monday-Friday) in partnership with Feeding Metro Manila. This is done everyday in Helping Land, a slum community in Tondo, Manila. Helping Land sits on an active dumpsite and is home to hundreds of families whose main source of livelihood is scavenging from garbage. Most of them fill their hunger by relying on “pagpag” – leftover food from restaurants scavenged from trash. In Filipino, “pagpag” literally means “to shake-off”, and this refers to shaking the dirt, maggots, and flies off the edible portion of the leftovers. Not only the children do not get the nutritional requirements they need, but they are also very prone to food-borne diseases which, often, can be fatal. (projectpearls.org)
KJ and Aiko distributing food alongside Cassie– a longtime advocate for Project PEARLS as well as a dancer for the Company’s junior division APT
Jolo and Mel passing out meals as well with Cassie’s mom, Tita Mailou.
My role during the trip was the acting liaison between PEARLS and Art of Us team. Thus, during the feeding, I was organizing our dance workshops with the PEARLS team, photographing this project unfolding, and… in all honesty, playing with the kids.

Ray, on the other hand, kicked off documenting Art of Us 2017 in video format. Be on the look out for the end product! *video coming soon*
The dancing hasn’t started yet but the fun already began!

Feeding Hungry Creative Spirits
After DSK, we would clear the learning center to transform it into a dance studio. The children were seamlessly drawn to Jolo, Mel and KJ as their dance teachers and their eagerness to learn kept our energies. Also, upon seeing how our nanay volunteers were excited for the dancing-dancing too, Aiko became their impromptu dance instructor.

To further recap the Art of Us dance workshops, I’ll let the photos and our dance teachers speak for themselves. As you go through the photos, I want you to keep in mind that our dance teachers’ Tagalog skills are limited. But, as I’m sure you could tell through the photos, the language barrier did not stop the power of dance and fun from connecting the dance teachers to their students:
Team Jolo
Feeling super fulfilled and grateful to be able to make a different in these kids lives even if I’m only able to take them out of their daily troubles for a couple of hours a day. Definitely puts life in perspective for me.
Team KJ
These kids… in just three days, we were able to put a small dance together but to be in their community and to be part of what they endure daily was an experience itself…
… you think we are giving back to them by giving our time and presence to these children but they are the ones giving back to me tenfold. It’s amazing to see how a simple art form can enlighten these kids who experienced a small distraction from their normal lives.
Team Mel
Whenever I find myself in a position to give back, especially to the younger generation, I feel completely in my element. I’ve found so much joy and purpose in teachingover the years and to be able to travel and work alongside the amazing Project PEARLS and Empire in the Air has been such a life changing experience so far.
Team AIKO
My experience with the tita squad was fulfilling and exciting. I have a soft spot when it comes to mothers, especially lolas. Growing up I saw how hard work it is to be a mother. Seeing them enjoying themselves and just having FUN is definitely the most rewarding part of this trip.
Team Bonding
Each practice concluded with simply hanging out. On top of developing relationships with their students, our dance teachers also grew attachments to them.

The night before the dance students big performance at the Project PEARLS Anniversary celebration, KJ, Jolo, Mel and Aiko went back to work. They decorated each and every one of their dance team members a t-shirt to wear for their performance.
#gallery-0-39 { margin: auto; } #gallery-0-39 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 25%; } #gallery-0-39 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-0-39 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */
The Project PEARLS Anniversary Celebration
Out of all of our days in Helping Land, the Project PEARLS Anniversary Celebration was the biggest. It had more volunteers, more children, more nanays, more smiles, and even more energy for dancing.
The Feeding
As always, we begun the PEARLS day with feeding. This time around our Art of Us team joined their beginning prayer to wish them all a brighter future.
As happy as Jolo was to distribute the food
The kids were even more excited to eat!
The Performances
And soon after our special feeding, performances kicked off for the Project PEARLS family of volunteers and community members. Up first were KJ, Mel, and Jolo:
Following the teachers’ dances were the students’:
Team KJ
If you ever think you have it worse, I encourage you to take a step back and think about what you already have. Don’t ever take a day for granted. And, if you have the energy and the life to show it, be compassionate because you never know how many lives you can touch around you.
Team Jolo
Team Mel
On our first day at Helping Land, we walked through and experienced first hand the harsh condition this community lives in. Project PEARLS, along with their many volunteers, provide a safe haven for these children and I feel so honored to have been a part of it all these past few days, and all the while build relationships with the children.
Team Maganda
Just like the end of our workshops, we ended the celebration by hanging out with the kids and playing games.

The Last Day of Art of Us aka the Last Day in Helping Land
We came back to Helping Land for the last time a week later. KJ, Mel and Jolo’s flight were scheduled that day but they wanted to make sure they could see their kids one last time. We had our usual fun with the kids but our morning was doused with an emotional goodbye.

The best part of our last moments with Helping Land was seeing the kids perform once again. Within our week away from Helping Land, the kids taught each other the dances that Mel, Kj, and Jolo taught them. Their hunger to learn and dance allowed them to work together for the best performance yet. If you ask me, the three groups dancing together validated the success of Art of Us.
Art of Us Unfolded
A year of planning and two weeks with Project PEARLS became an experience of a lifetime.
We arrived in Manila with two goals in mind: 1)provide the PEARLS children a positive outlet from their harsh realities and 2) show the PEARLS kids that dance has the power to be an extension of themselves. We may have met the these goals but we are coming back home with a lot more. To quote KJ once again, you think we are giving back to them by giving our time and presence to these children but they are the ones giving back to me us tenfold.
On behalf of Ray, Aiko, Jolo, KJ, and Mel, I would like to thank all of you who have supported our Art of Us Journey. Again, without you, none of this would have been possible.
Thank you to our teams back home– The Company and Empire in the Air– as well as to our Manila family, Project PEARLS. Special shout-outs to Karen, Jay-r, Tito Nonoy, Monica, MaeMae, and Christine for the hospitality. Also, extra special shout-out to my mother Melissa Villa for entrusting us in creating this program.
To our loves of Helping Land in Tondo, Manila We all hope to see you again soon ❤
