HENRY WAS more-less aloof to william. or, at least when he's allowed to be. when they aren't doing things . . . well, like this. or if they're lucky, other such activities. those such as pressing his best friend into this very mattress, with curly head pressed to chest. he's enraptured. enraptured by william, by his attention. he always will be, perhaps. even now, as henry's young face is turned down towards their palms, watching whilst william traces the lines of his hand. blond hair is messy &. unkempt, &. they both seem to be avoiding each other's eyes.
henry might be even more in-denial when it comes to his infatuation with will.
yet, somehow he knows he's going to hurt him. that he already has. it swarms his stomach, makes him feel guilty. a phantom pressure on his windpipe. his head turns in as william presses against his shoulder, &. instinct brings henry's nose to will's hair. nuzzling there, as he tries to ward off the pit of anxiety growing inside of his gut. the questions were a lot. &. some he wasn't sure how to answer. so he just says: "i don't know." when you put it like that, them both knowing? it doesn't make much sense, suddenly, to deny it. pursing his lips as he turns his cheek to rest his head atop the other man's. the 'right' could have snapped his heart in two, alone. blinking rapidly while licking his lips. "but, do you really want me that much?" henry says out of the blue, narrowing his brows. for some reason he stupidly didn't expect so somber a showing from afton. "i mean, i'm not that great, you know." monotonous tone mumbles against will's scalp. "you could do better."
Tumblr media
@muutos asked: ❝ i don't want to ruin our friendship. that's the main issue i have. ok but what if college willry ❞ ( best friends who don't realize they're in love )
William was no romantic—or, well, that was what he preferred to believe about himself. His frequent trysts had been sparser, what with his fresh focus on wooing his closest friend. It was something he had initially framed as strictly sexual, all while taking Henry on pseudo-dates and savoring his mere presence. Even now he was sitting shoulder to shoulder with Henry against the headboard of his dorm room bed, finger lightly tracing over the palm of Henry's hand. ( Perhaps he was infatuated. )
Tumblr media
The words made his stomach sink, the skin between his brows pinching for a moment. "Right." His head tipped forward, cheek resting against Henry's shoulder. He had no real argument to make—what proof did he have to the contrary? William Afton who cut out anyone at the first sign of romantic interest, who had no real experience with romance? At least Henry wasn't denying that their attraction was mutual—that was enough to keep William bold. "What do you want, then? For me to pretend I don't want you?" He highly doubted he could have managed that, even if the question hadn't been so clearly insincere. "Will you even be able to play pretend?"

Tornado Warning
Tumblr media
Title // Tornado Warning
Pairing // Evan Buckley x Reader
Warnings // Panic attacks, I guess? Also fear of tornados. This is a clean, wholesome little story.
Summary // There is a tornado warning and you are freaking out. Guess who you call for comfort.
Word Count // 1.5k
Tumblr media
Marshmallows, check. Rice Crispy cereal. Check. Stove ready. Check.
Your head went back and forth from the television to the spread of food on the kitchen counter. You were not much of a cook but decided to try your hand at something simple. Rice crispy treats were about as simple as it could get. Unfortunately, you didn’t realize just how messy such a simple treat would be to prepare.
You were watching a cooking show and following along, taking breaks during the commercials to assess your job so far. You used far more mixing bowls than you needed, bought three bags of marshmallows, and broke one wooden spoon. This was not turning out as well as you thought it would.
Suddenly, a loud noise. It was a shrill, piercing alarm. You jumped and the spoon you were using clattered to the floor. The noise was coming from the TV, interrupting the cooking show.
You walked over to the TV and stared at the words as they flashed across the screen. There was a tornado warning in effect. You felt the bile in your stomach rumble, threatening to come up. Your heart raced at the white words against the red banner, flashing brightly enough that it made your eyes hurt. It was getting harder and harder to breathe.
Panic rose inside and you abandoned your mess in the kitchen. Immediately, you started searching for your phone. Your hand patted every surface until you found it, hidden under a bag of unopened marshmallows. Your hands were shaking so bad as you tried to pull up his number. He was one the recent contacts you sent messages to, so he was easy to spot since he was near the top.
If it wasn’t for Evan Buckley, you wouldn’t even be in Los Angeles. He was one of your longest and bestest friends. The two of you went to college together and met through a couple of classes before taking separate career paths. However, that didn’t mean the two of you lost touch. It was the opposite, really.
And it helped that he was a first responder. He could calm your ass down in a heartbeat.
You texted him quickly, fumbling over the letters. In the end, you sent him a message that said town ado each goons crazy thanks to the beauty of autocorrect. Buck replied with a lovely wtf are you talking about before he decided to call you.
The phone buzzed in your hand, scaring you out of your mind. It took several seconds for you to calm down enough to answer the phone.
“Hello?” you asked in a whisper. You felt if you talked louder than that, the words wouldn’t make sense, like autocorrect of the brain or something.
“Are you having a stroke? Do I need to send Chim and Hen over to check on you?” Buck’s voice was light and sweet in your ear. How was he not freaking out about the impending tornado that might rip through the town and kill everything in sight?
It just then occurred to you that, again, he is a first responder and he’s seen worse things. Like that giant tidal wave, for instance. A tornado warning might actually be nothing to him.
“That’s not funny, I’m going to die.” You turned off the TV, no longer wanting to hear the shrill alarm playing in the background. What did people do in tornado warnings? Seek shelter or something, right? Kind of hard to do from the fourth floor. Does your building have a basement? What is the protocol here?
“Calm down, you are not going to die,” Buck said. You could tell he was trying not to laugh but you didn’t find any of it funny. If he wasn’t worth the phone call, you would’ve hung up on him, but you needed his voice as a source of comfort.
“How do you know? Are you a weatherman?” you shot back suddenly as you looked outside. The streets seemed quiet. No one was running around or looting for supplies. Maybe that was a good sign.
You heard him chuckle on the other end, and you heard the phone shuffling around before his voice came back as clear as day. “No, but I see emergencies all the time. Trust me, you’re fine.”
Trust him? Trust him? He didn’t know how the weather worked. A tornado can crash through at any given moment. He would be the one to fish your body out from the rubble, and here he is saying you are fine?
“Okay but this is a tornado warning, not a watch. There is a huge difference here,” you tried to argue for whatever reason. You didn’t want to be in the wrong and you felt your fears were justified. They were, right?
Buck sighed, and you could practically see his face right now. Sometimes you had to wonder how he put up with your ass.
“Look,” he said as reassuringly as possible, “I’m gonna come over. You’ll see there is nothing to worry about.”
“You are not driving through this weather.”
“What weather? It’s in the eighties and it’s sunny. Shut up, I’m coming over.”
He hung up on you without saying goodbye and you stared at your phone in frustration. That man certainly knew how to work your nerves, sometimes for the good, but right now, you were worried about your life and his. He would be solely responsible if you died of a heart attack right now. Should you pen a note in case you do?
You know what? That’s a good idea.
In the time that it took you to find some paper, a pen, think about what you wanted to say, and write it down, there was a knock on the door. Either he was in the area or he did a little bit of speeding because he arrived a lot quicker than you predicted.
You walked over to the door and opened it, revealing his sweet yet sassy smile. You rolled your eyes and shut the door on him, but he put a foot out and stopped you.
“Come on Y/N, don’t be like that.” He walked in and his eyes fell onto your kitchen. The sass moved from his smile to his face. “Looks like the tornado already stopped by. I’m so glad you made it out alive.”
You pushed him, but that didn’t faze him. Curse those stupid muscles and the in-shape body he has.
He walked into the kitchen and, having eyes like a hawk, he spotted the note you wrote earlier. He held it up and read it and ended up laughing as he looked over at you. You could see your messy handwriting on the white paper, smudged a bit from being around the kitchen.
Tumblr media
“You look good for a dead person,” Buck said as he placed the note back on the kitchen counter.
“Shut up, I’m really scared here,” you said softly.
He saw your face and instantly, his face melted into concern. Sure, he may have just been playing around but now that he saw how serious you were and how scared you actually turned out to be, it wasn’t all fun and games anymore.
He made his way toward you and reached for your hand. You surrendered it slowly as he gripped your fingers within his. “I’m sorry. You are really freaked out, aren’t you?”
He pulled you in and hugged you. Suddenly, you felt a thousand times better. This was all you really needed, a stable and solid hug. Just the feeling of being protected was enough because now, the thought of a tornado warning was so far away from your mind, it no longer seemed to matter or seemed at all important.
“Okay so we will get through this together. This is nothing, I’ve been through a lot of tornado warnings before. You could not be in safer hands,” Buck said gently.
His tone was relaxing. He led you over to the couch and the two of you sat down. Just for good measure, he kept an arm around you and held you close. You really liked the feeling of being pressed against him, especially turning times of terror, but you would never let him know that. People like you don’t really go out with people like him. It was best to keep your mouth shut.
And that was okay. You didn’t mind liking him from afar. At least, for now.
He held you and you gripped his shirt tightly, feeling that slight panicky feeling rise back up. Only this time, you were not afraid of the tornado warning. You were afraid of this moment ending when the world went back to normal.
There wasn’t much you could do. All good things must come to an end. For now, you just needed to sit back and enjoy being in the arms of a man you cannot have. No matter how much it hurt you inside.
Hopefully the tornado warning lasts as long as possible, perhaps even days, if it meant being comforted by him.
You could only hope.

Christmas Eve - At Peace
That holiday-themed story that I will totally blame @superherotiger for making me procrastinate with ;)
###
Just a couple of months after they defeated Thanos, Tony and Pepper throw a Christmas party. Instead of a partying kid, Tony finds his Spiderling outside in the snow at the grave he has been trying to ignore ever exists.
I'm using my own Fix-it to Endgame "Like You'd know how it works" as a basis for the timeline, though the prompt will work fine without having read that story. The important part is, that Tony's not dead.
Baseline: circa 5 months after Tony is brought back from the multiverse.
###
The sky above him was clear. No clouds. No moon. Above him only the stars. The stars, he still avoided looking at too much. It made the night a little colder, a little darker despite the white snowy blanket covering the hills and trees.
It wasn't that Tony minded the solitude, quite the opposite. That had been the idea behind moving out to the cabin after all. Peace and quiet. Less exposure. Privacy. But of all the places on their property, why did the kid have to go there?
In all fairness, there was nothing quiet or peaceful about what was going on at Tony's house right now. There were 13 people gathered in his living room and kitchen, one of them a black-eyed alien who didn't quite understand the concept of Christmas but had been positively eager to experience all the "merriment and joy" that the little Madame Secretary had been promising from afar. Leave it to Tony to have to explain a spaceship landing in his backyard on Christmas Eve and talk down an international response.
"Morgan said it's an important gathering that every family member is obligated to attend." Nebula's eyes were on Tony, unblinking. "You should have told me sooner. I could have been here last year and the year before but I didn't know."
"Not to worry, Smurfette." There was a sense of genuine joy at seeing her again, that let the smile on his lips come quite easily. "You're here now, so that's that."
It was a sight to be seen how willingly the blue meanie allowed Morgan to put a party hat on her before she was sent off to mingle with the rest of them, studying the mini hot dogs on her plate. That hadn't been the only surprising sight of the evening though. Tony's jaw had equally popped with stunned surprise as he opened the door to a paler and distinctly shorter human version of Bruce Banner. A face Tony hadn't seen on him in years, as he showed up on his doorstep accompanied by a certain master spy that Tony had frankly not been expecting either.
"Making things work then," Tony mused out loud as he hovered next to them while Pepper fetched a welcoming drink.
Bruce cleared his throat. "Just... you know... happy to... to have her back."
"Of course." His head bobbed a short nod with a sincere smile in Natasha's direction. There was no denying that Tony, too, was glad to have her back. Retired or not, he had no illusions that the Avengers would remain anything but a constant in his life one way or another and while Natasha might never be a definite number on his side, she was an ally. Of sorts.
"Well, it's good to see you guys. I know it's quite a drive out here and we had suspected things might be a little more entertaining at the Compound." His thoughts still trailing a little behind, the words had slipped off his tongue before his brain could catch up with what he was saying. He hadn't meant to just straight up mention the Compound, the rest of the team by extension who hadn't received an invite to this particular gathering.
Pepper had wanted to discuss the guest list more than once. Had asked him repeatedly if he wanted to extend an invitation to the others, the team... but Rogers... Steve... no. Christmas was for family and while Bruce and his plus one did count - because Tony wanted him to count - Steve... Steve was not family. When it came down to it, they were hardly even friends. Natasha's eyes were on him and Tony was painfully aware that he was spacing out. No glasses to hide his face, all of a sudden he felt almost too exposed in his own house.
"Oh, we're just splitting the time equally over the holidays." Natasha smiled brightly. "Christmas Eve with one side of the family and then Christmas Day with the other."
Bruce's face fell a little, looking back and forth between them. "It's not sides as much as... just..."
They were saved from more awkwardness as Pepper arrived with the drinks and ushered them further into the house. Bruce was happy to follow along but Natasha hung back, her eyes still on Tony.
"There don't have to be any sides in this." She linked their arms, pushing Tony along, as Bruce shot a glance back at them, just out of earshot. "You can just decide to let it go, Tony."
"I did." It wasn't all that easy to keep the tone light but he was determined not to let this get to him. "I told him, I moved on from all of this years ago."
"We both know that's not the same as solving the real problem." Her voice was low but not unkind. "We both know you never forgave or forget, that he has never earned back your trust."
It didn't matter. He didn't even want to think about how much of that was or wasn't true. Rogers had no place in his thoughts tonight. So the timing was perfect when his eyes came to rest on a brown-haired boy who was creeping closer and closer to the pot of mulled wine. With a lame excuse, he pulled away from Natasha, away from the world he had officially retired from towards the buffet.
"And what do you think you're doing?"
"Me?" The boy's eyes were wide, the cup in his hand already filled to the brim.
"Listen here, squirrel!" His finger poking against Harley's chest, Tony could at least pretend that this was a situation he could actually control. "You take your grabby hands off that mulled wine or so help me..." He snatched the hot drink out of the boy's hands.
"Oh, come on..." His long lashes were blinking at Tony with feigned innocence. "It's not for me."
"That routine might work on some indifferent cater waiter at those benefits but if you think I can't see past your ridiculously lazy—"
"Yeah, yeah..." Harley just waved him off. "Don't be such a killjoy!"
Tony narrowed his eyes at him. "I mean it!" For good measure, he took a healthy gulp from the cup, positively burning his throat in the process. But it wasn't until Harley threw his hands in the air and turned his back in defeat - for now - that Tony allowed his face to cringe at the sting. Those little trouble makers were not helping with his heart condition. Speaking of trouble... "Where is Peter?"
Harley crossed his arms in front of himself, his mind clearly brooding on a new strategy. "No clue."
Tony's next sip of the hot wine was a lot smoother than the first. "What do you mean, no clue?"
"It generally means that the person doesn't have any information about the subject that you are—"
"Alright, short stuff..." Tony's eyes were searching the room but the little spider was nowhere to be seen. "A bit less of the asshole routine please?"
"Listen, if you want me to babysit, same rules apply as they do for Morgan." Brazen in his brattiness, the little shit ladled a good helping of mulled wine into a new cup. "I'll need a heads-up and generous compensation that I'm happy to re-negoti— Hey!"
Harley tried to hold on to the cup that Tony once again just plucked from his hands. "You've had enough of this!"
"That one is for Rhodey," the boy scowled.
"Uh-huh. Sure. I'll get it to him and you can enjoy your night without any errands, hm?"
Tony made a point to stare at the kid until he huffed and finally skedaddled away from the wine pot, possibly in search of his sister, or maybe more likely trying to stay out of her and Morgan's way. Careful not to spill either of the two cups, Tony made his way across the room towards Rhodey who had brought a "friend", a development Tony had been mindful not to comment on all night.
The Colonel's eyes looked him up and down as he made a beeline towards them. "Because one is never enough with you, is it, Tones?"
"You..." he hissed, his lips pursed. "You better not try to quip with me, you enabler!" Tony pushed the second cup he was holding into Carol Danvers' hands instead of Rhodey's. "Are you seriously letting my boy use you as an exit strategy to score a buzz?"
Rhodey's eyes shifted to the cup in his "friend" Carol's hands before he nipped on what was left in his own cup and then gave a shrug. "Which one?"
"That's not funny!"
With a deep sigh, Rhodey exchanged his empty cup with Carol's hot one. "Tony, you need to lay off the mother-hen vibes. The boy is 21 years old, as for Peter—."
"No, he's not," Tony growled. "Not for another 6 days!"
"Geez, daddy, do I really have to remind you how old you were when I 'enabled'," Rhodey air-quoted, "your ass in college?"
He said it like he had a point when that was exactly what Tony was afraid of. "And how did that turn out?"
His eyebrows pulled up, Rhodey made a gesture like that would somehow prove something, but Tony was not in the mood for semantics. His eyes roamed across the room - pointedly ignoring Harley who tried to usher Nebula closer and closer to the pot of hot wine - in search of the other little trouble maker.
Where was the kid? He hadn't seen him since... since he had ducked away from awkwardly shuffling his feet back and forth between May and Happy. Without another word, Tony strode past his friend, checking the kitchen but there was no Peter in there either. Everyone else was happily chatting, eating, enjoying themselves exactly like they were supposed to. Not so the Spiderling.
For a few more minutes, Tony quietly, discreetly wandered around the house. He had a feeling, a feeling that something was up. It didn't take long for him to give up the pretense and outright mutter to FRIDAY, asking in which room Peter was hiding.
"He's not in the house, boss."
That was how Tony found himself outside, stalking up a snowy hill in the dark. The wind was icy, but it wasn't the cold that made the hair on the back of his neck stand tall. He had avoided this for months. Had avoided even thinking about that spot on the hill where his other-dimensional self had been buried before he ever made it to this timeline. With how loudly his brain was rattling, there was a part of him that couldn't deny that right about now, he appreciated the silence in the dark. They were so far away from what people would call the 'civilized' world out here. Surely, with Peter's senses constantly strained in the city, that was the basic appeal to him as well.
It was also how Peter had heard him coming before Tony even had the chance to call out to him.
"How did you find me?"
A little winded from the slippery ascend to the hilltop, Tony paused a couple of steps behind where the boy was sitting in the snow. "Oh, come on... It's me."
Peter pursed his lips, refusing to turn his head. "So, you questioned every single person at the house about when they had seen me last and then calculated the radius of how far I might have come?"
Tony only blew out a huff.
"Ah," Peter exclaimed and pulled his phone out of his pocket. "Tracking me after all, aren't you."
"Well, duh." Slowly, Tony came closer until he sank to the ground right next to the boy. "Not that I needed it. You're a Spiderling, not an Elf, kid."
"Right." Peter grimaced to himself. "Footprints."
"I keep telling you. Gotta learn how to fly."
The smile that tucked on Peter's lips seemed genuine this time. "You didn't have to come out here."
All of a sudden, Tony contemplated that the boy may have picked this particular spot not because of what it meant to him, but because he had been sure that of all the places, few of the people staying at the house that night would voluntarily wander up here. Tony least of all. There was no denying that the kid had picked up on how much this all freaked Tony out, the fact that there was a dead version of himself buried so close to where he still lived. Silence hung heavy between them before Tony's voice echoed a little quieter, a little hesitant.
"I wasn't sure if I should, but..." He swallowed hard. "I can leave if you want to be alone."
There was another pause. Wanting to give him room to speak if that was what he wanted, Tony waited but the kid didn't say a thing.
With a shaky exhale, Tony kept his eyes on him. "But then I thought, I'd rather have you send me back than not be here if... if you would need me."
The kid's eyes were still staring straight ahead at the headstone in front of them.
"I know, I'm not him—"
"Of course you are," Peter breathed quietly.
Tony lowered his gaze, faltering. Maybe. "Not really though."
The kid's lip was caught between his teeth, refusing to look over at him. "In... in every way that matters."
"If you want to talk about it—"
"I don't," Peter mumbled.
It had been weeks after he had come back when Tony's curiosity had won out against his anxiety. Late at night on his own in the basement, he had asked FRIDAY to play him the footage of what had happened that day. That day he had died. Pepper, the kid, Rhodey... seeing their agony in the face of what he had done to protect them... it was a memory he just couldn't shake.
"I know, me being here doesn't change what happened. Kid, I know you were there when he..." Tony glanced to the side, searching the kid's face for a reaction. "...when I died."
Peter's head moved in a mixture of a shake and a shrug. "It... it doesn't matter..." His voice shook, possibly trying to convince himself as much as Tony. "You're back. You're... here. It... it's fine..."
"You're sitting at my grave in the freezing cold in the middle of my Christmas Eve party, buddy."
It was as bluntly as he could put it. He could see no benefit in tiptoeing around the demons the kid was battling.
But Peter shook his head more distinctly this time, still denying him. "It was just because... so many people and my senses, they... I just needed a little quiet to... calm down."
"Right. We have about 60 hectares of land out here and still..." Tony blew out a breath and leaned a little closer to the kid. "Still, this is the spot you picked to go." There was no answer from the Spiderling. "It's okay, if it still hurts, buddy."
The humorless chuckle that bubbled out of the kid didn't make things better for either of them.
"Pete, can you look at me?"
He didn't though. His eyes didn't stray from the inscription on the stone. 'A.E.S. - At peace.' A shudder went through Tony at the thought of how his wife had decided on that particular inscription.
"You're here." Peter's eyes dropped further, away from the stone, down to the snowy ground. "You're okay. It... it shouldn't matter..."
Tony grit his teeth then threw caution to the wind. "It's been 5 years and a little more than 8 months since you dusted in my arms, Pete."
The kid visibly shook next, his hands braced against the cold ground as he finally turned to look at Tony.
"5 years, 8 months, and some odd days." Tony's lower lip was caught between his teeth, his cheeks flushed. The images in his mind were as vivid as they had been on that fateful day on Titan. "You're here now. You're back. You have been back for 6 months and I can still hear your voice in my head pleading how you don't—"
"I'm sorry..." the kid whispered.
Tony huffed out a low chuckle. "Yeah. You said that too."
"I'm sorry that... that you felt responsible," the kid started and Tony had just wanted to protest when the boy stopped him with a wave of his hand. "I am, but it's not the same."
For a brief moment, Tony closed his eyes, trying his best to calm himself and keep the dry bite from his tone. "No. It really isn't the same."
The breath Peter blew out was harsher, angrier. "It's not, because I didn't choose to get dusted," he growled, refusing to look away from Tony now. "I didn't want to die!"
"I know, Pete. I remember." The beat of his heart hurt in his chest. "You think I would have wanted to die?"
Peter shook his head, tearing his gaze away again. "It doesn't matter."
"Kid—"
"Can we just... I don't want to argue about this."
Peter pulled his knees close to his chest and the way his hands were shaking made Tony want to drag him back inside so he could focus on giving him a proper lecture without having to worry about the cold the kid might catch out here.
Instead, he filed that back for later, deep breaths keeping his own frustration in check. "Maybe we do need to argue about this."
"I just want to move on!"
"And I..." Tony couldn't stop his voice from shaking. "...would really appreciate a chance to argue my side here."
"You don't need to argue your side," the kid hissed at him. "It's not you, I'm mad at, okay?"
Tony studied his boy. He was becoming painfully aware, how strung up the kid really was, how agitated. "It's not a choice anyone wants to make, kid. Sometimes, there is just no other way to —"
"There were like 10 people close by who could have done it." Peter shot him an angry glance. "It didn't have to be you! What about Morgan and Pepper, huh? What about—" He shook his head, eyes back on the snow-covered grave. "Captain Danvers. Thor. King T'Challa. The lady with the flying horse. Strange. Rogers. Barnes. Wanda Maximoff. Me." His head spun back towards Tony. "I could have tried."
Tony's stomach turned at the mere thought of that. "Yeah, there's no way in hell, Pete."
"Why not?" Peter's eyes burned with tears. "Why not! I could have taken it!"
"You have no idea if that's true." His heart was racing, his throat dry. "You might have died."
"So it's fine for you to sacrifice yourself on a whim but for me it—"
"Stop!" The way his hand hit the ground didn't have the grand effect he wanted. "That's not how this will work, kid. Ever. I will always try to keep you safe."
"And what about what I want?" Peter spat at him.
Tony shook his head, his eyebrows knitted close, desperately grasping for control. "I'm here now, am I not?"
"Yeah, for now..."
Any frustrated retort that might have been building up on his tongue died instantly as he watched the boy rub a hand across his face, the way his lower lip was quivering.
"Kid... come here..." His agitation evaporated and without another beat of hesitation, Tony pulled him close, his arms tightly wrapped around the boy's small frame. "Shh, it'll... it'll be alright."
There was nothing he could say, nothing he could do that would take away the pain of the days when he had seemed lost forever to the people who loved him most. Just like Tony would never be able to quite shake the deep sense of loss he had carried for years when the kid had been dead and gone.
Peter's hands were clasping the thick fabric of Tony's coat, his face pressed against his chest.
There was nothing he could say, no promises he would make, not the ones the kid wanted to hear right now cause he could never keep any of them. When it came to the kid's safety, his life, he would always put it above his own. No matter how much it might hurt him again, at least the kid would be breathing, would get to live.
"I'm sorry, buddy."
"But... but you're not," he mumbled against Tony's jacket.
He had a hand on the back of the kid's head, holding him tight. "I hate that I hurt you, Pete. I do." He pressed his eyes close, ignoring how the cold was creeping up from underneath him. "But I'll never apologize for trying to keep you safe." The boy shook in his arms, but Tony didn't let him pull away. "I sure as hell won't apologize for succeeding." There was a low tremor in the kid's body that was definitely more than emotions. "You're shaking, buddy. Let's get you back inside."
"I'm not c-cold," Peter hiccoughed.
"Alright, then..." Tony ruffled a hand through the boy's hair, his own digits frozen stiff. "Well, I'm going to get pneumonia and you seem to be very invested in—" He groaned as Peter slapped a hand against his chest.
"It's not f-funny!"
"No, at my age it really isn't something—"
This time, he caught the kid's hand just in time to soften the blow. In the process, Peter sat up straight enough for Tony to squint at his red-rimmed eyes.
"In there, you could watch me bust Harley for sneaking around the mulled wine?" There was a sparkle in the kid's eyes at that. A real sparkle he couldn't quite hide. "Ha! Knew I'd get you with that one."
Peter moved back a bit, shaky fingers rubbing his face. Squinting at the boy, Tony was weighing his words, wondering how many hornet's nest he should be poking at.
"You should get over this, buddy." Tony cringed at the look of utter discomfort on his boy's face. "I mean it. That little power struggle the two of you are going through..?"
"There's no power struggle."
Tony crocked his head at him. "You know what I mean... Kid, I know you want to keep your secrets but Harley can be a great ally to you."
"Right," Peter mumbled. "Can we just like... do this another time?"
He nodded before the kid had even finished the sentence. "Course, buddy." For a moment, Tony held in, his focus never anywhere else but Peter, as he tried to control the tremor in his voice. "So, we should get back inside, right?"
"Yeah. Right." The kid leaned back against him, his voice muffled. "Just... just a couple more minutes?"
Tony swallowed hard, nodding soundlessly. He'd never refuse the kid. Never. How could he ever?

Name Changing (3)
FANDOM - MARVEL MCU, X-MEN, DEADPOOL
PAIRING - BUCKY X READER (female reader, no physical descriptions)
WARNINGS - ALL OF THEM, SMUT, VIOLENCE ANGST
DESCRIPTION -  Sequel to Name Calling
After merging with your bloodthirsty alternate personality things start getting a little dicey. You’ve got two decades worth of anger to sort through, a feral mutation to figure out how to live with, a biological father who you hate trying to teach you control and if your wedding planner suggests teal for the bridesmaids again you might just eat her liver.
Luckily you have Bucky Barnes by your side, helping you figure things out. What Bucky doesn’t know is that you have found an outlet for the uncontrollable rage, one that absolutely nobody can know about. If your friends and family knew that you were out slaughtering people in the dead of night while they slept, they might be a little annoyed. Wade Wilson is happy to keep your secret though, so long as you keep bribing him with Mexican food.
For as long as you could remember, all you had wanted was to be good. Now you’re seeing the temptation in the darkness.
Chapter Three - The Firing Line
“Do you want to bite down on this for me?”
You obliged him, biting down on the leather strap.
“Are you sure about this?” Bruce asked, yet again.
He did this every time, checked you weren’t going to change your mind. You wanted the chaotic disease gone, you’d endure whatever you had to. Even this. You nodded confidently to Banner.
“We’re taking tissue samples from the liver today, Dr. McCoy has a theory about the proteins...”
“gerf onwis hit.” You mumbled.
“Alright, making the first incision now.” He said and carefully sliced your abdomen open with the scalpel.
Ever since you merged with Vernichtung you had finally gained full access to your mutant abilities, including your accelerated healing. That allowed Bruce and Hank to have unlimited access to fresh samples. Bruce would word it a bit nicer but essentially he was loping bits off of you to study and experiment on.
You bit down on the leather strap and tried not to scream or be sick. Accelerated healing from the mutation and the super soldier serum meant knocking you out for the procedures was out of the question but at least he hadn’t decided to cut your heart out today. That had been a ridiculously unpleasant experience. Growing a new one had been worse.
The pain was easy to deal with, pain wasn’t a new experience for you, it was the strange tugging sensation that was making you nauseated. You closed your eyes and went to your happy place in your mind to get through it.
“Do you, James Buchanan Barnes take this woman to be your lawfully wedded wife?”
“I do.”
“And do you,...
“I’m finished.” Bruce interrupted your daydream and unstrapped your arms and legs from the table.
Your curiosity got the better of you like it did every time and you peered at the samples he’d taken.
“Wade would lose his mind if he saw this.” You groaned.

Steve stood in the middle of the room, the most horrified expression on his face. You looked up at him innocently.
“We didn't have any plates big enough.” You told him.
“So you used my shield?”
“He can’t eat off of the floor Steve!”
“So you used my shield?”
“I’ll clean it afterward, besides it’s basically a big metal bowl.” You said, shrugging.
Steve couldn’t stop watching in horror as Erlo tore at the raw beef you’d served him in the upturned shield.
“Cap I once saw you use that to bash a mans skull in, quit bitching.” Sam told him.
After the initial fear, Sam had decided that a pet lion was pretty cool and while he still wouldn’t get too close he was being supportive of Erlo’s presence.
“Is that good? Do you want some more?” You asked Erlo.
A wave of satisfaction washed over you from him and you patted him on the head before heading over to get your own breakfast off of Sam.
Sam shoved a piled plate of bacon and pancakes (there were at least 15 pancakes) at you and started the inquisition.
“So he understands English, he responds when you talk to him. But he doesn’t talk back?”
“No, he just sort of lets me feel how he feels.” You explained.
“How did that even happen? What did they do to him?” Sam said with a frown as Steve eventually dragged himself away from the horror show and sat next to you, helping you eat the mountain of food mama Sam had given you.
“Friday’s decrypting the files as we speak, hopefully we’ll find out something useful.” You said.
“Alright. Well on to better subjects... As your best man, I have made a decision.” Sam informed you.
You paused with a forkful of bacon halfway to your mouth and looked at him. He was grinning proudly and Steve squeezed your elbow comfortingly.
“I conferred with your maid of honor and she agreed that she would take the day before the wedding to throw you some sort of girly spa day and I get the hen do!” Sam announced happily.
“Don’t say it.” You warned.
“He’s going to say it.” Steve sighed.
“VEGAS BABY!”

“Miss Stark? The quarterly reports for you.”
“Thanks, put them in that little box over there.” You said dismissively.
“Miss? That’s the paper shredder.”
“Yup.”
The assistant looked utterly perplexed and torn. You took pity on him.
“Alternatively leave them on the desk and go get yourself a coffee, if anyone asks tell them it’s for me.” You told him.
He looked instantly relieved.
“Thanks Miss Stark!” He gushed, dropping the papers on your desk and rushing out before you could change your mind.
You sighed and text Peter.
You: Quarterly reports are a finance thing right?
You: Actually I don’t care, look over them for me?
You: Or alternatively lets blow this popsicle stand and go get a milkshake?
NOT Spiderman: I’m at school???
You: Ok.
You: I’ll pick you up.
NOT Spiderman: NO! I’ll come get a milkshake with you after school. Scan the reports and have Friday check them.
You: I’d be lost without you. You get an extra large milkshake.
NOT Spiderman: Ned’s making me ask if you’ll go to prom with him.
You: Sorry, bad signal. Can’t hear you.
You took Peters advice and scanned the reports.
“Friday, look these over for me?”
“Sure thing, and what exactly am I looking for?” She responded.
You narrowed your eyes at the ceiling.
“I don’t know.” You growled unhappily.
“I’ll check over and discrepancies with past reports and compare them to track the company’s growth and draw up a projection for future reports.” She told you with what you were 100% sure was a sigh.
“Have I told you lately I love you?” You asked.
“Not nearly as often as I deserve.” She deadpanned.
“Set up a daily reminder for me to tell you. Is Erlo doing ok?”
“He is currently in your bedroom eating Sargent Barnes’s shoes.”
“Aww, that’s my passive aggressive boy.” You cooed.
“Your father is asking if you would like to go get pizza for lunch with him.” She passed along.
You looked around at the pile of paperwork you had to get through.
“Absolutely.”
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
“So how’s work?” Tony asked as you bit into your third pizza.
“I’m learning a lot, like for example did you know that flying a quinjet to Chicago to get pizza is increasing our carbon footprint?” You said.
Tony snapped his fingers at you like you’d just come up with a genius idea.
“You are absolutely right, we should invent a cleaner way to power the quinjets.”
“Not what I meant but ok.” You said, laughing at him.
“That’s exactly what you meant. If someone thinks you said something smart, never correct them.” He told you seriously.
“Can I ask you something?” You prodded.
“You just did.”
“Alright, enough with the dad jokes.” You said, chucking a scrunched up napkin at him which he batted away.
“Alright, ask away.” He said.
“Are you trying to groom me to take over the company?”
You’d overheard some people gossiping about it in the office earlier that day and it was weighing on your mind.
“Would it be a bad thing is I was?” He asked.
“I don’t know that I’m a businesswoman, dad. Even if I wanted it, I don’t think I’d be any good at it.” You admitted.
“I’m not trying to get you to take over, no. If I thought you wanted that, that it would make you happy then I would but I can tell it’s not your calling. But you need something. All you do is save people. You don’t even have any hobbies really.”
“That’s not true.” You insisted.
“Your fiancée is a fellow Avenger, your friends are all hero’s or vigilante’s or connected to that life in some way. You need a life Kit Kat, you need something else. You can’t let being an Avenger consume you.” He told you.
You tried to think of something in your life that didn’t come back to the Avengers but you couldn’t. Even your secret hobby of killing people with Wade was about killing bad guys, with a vigilante.
“I don’t know if I can ever do something normal.” You said sadly.
“You can’t. Nothing you do could ever be anything less than extraordinary. But it has to be yours, and just yours. Go traveling, take up painting, go to college, open a book shop. Whatever you want sweetheart, but try and find something. Please?”
“Wait... Is this your way of firing me?”
“I love you but you are literally the worst intern we have ever had. Yes, you’re fired.”
You made a strangled noise of offense.
“Well since I am jobless, I guess lunch is on you.” You said, sulking.
“Leech.”  Tony rolled his eyes at you.
“Hurry up, I have to pick Peter up from school.” You told, getting up and rubbing your full stomach.
“Bossy leech.”
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
“How did your history paper go?” You asked Peter as he slid into the passenger seat.
“I got an A! Thanks for getting Mr Bucky to help me out.” He said, showing you the paper with the big red A on it proudly.
“He just talked your ear off for a few hours, you actually made it into a coherent paper. You earned that A.” You told him seriously.
He looked embarrassed but proud as you pulled out of the school parking lot.
“So I got fired.” You told him casually.
“What? They can’t do that, you’re a Stark. Did you tell your dad? Do you want me to tell him?” Peter asked in a rash, incensed that someone would dare fire you.
“He knows, he was the one who did it. Took me out for a nice lunch, like a last meal.” You sniggered.
Peter looked outraged on your behalf.
“It’s alright Spiderboy, I didn’t fit in there and he knew it. He wants me to go and figure out what I want to do with my life.” You said, sighing.
“Oh. Well, what do you want to do with your life?” Peter asked.
“I’m not sure. I sort of accidentally stumbled into having one at all and I’m not sure what I want to do except save people.”
“There are other ways to save people that don’t involve punching Nazi’s. There are nurses, firefighters, police officers, caretakers, therapists. Even people like musicians or authors can help people. If you wanna help others you can find ways to do it.” Peter told you.
“Huh.” You hadn’t thought of it like that.
“Just figure out what you’re good at, what you can do well and enjoy.” He said wisely.
You smiled gratefully at him for his advice. He had given you a lot to think about and you mulled it over as you pulled up and parked outside the diner and got out of the car.
“Come on oh wise one, I’ll even get you some fries with your milkshake.” You said, ruffling his hair as he joined you on the sidewalk.
He playfully shoved you and you stumbled and glared at him. He choked back a snort of laughter at your expression.
“Oh you better run.” You snarled.
He took your advice and bolted, laughing loudly as he sprinted down the sidewalk. You grinned and gave him a head start before stalking after your prey.
How hard could it be to catch a spider?
You were too low down on the street to catch sight of the man stood on the roof upwind, watching you with narrowed eyes. He was always careful to make sure you never noticed him, you would never see him coming until he decided it was time and by then it would be far too late. He would stick to the shadows until it was time to rip your life apart.

Peter Parker is one of the characters who gets more of a spotlight in the sequel. What do you think about Tony and Peter's advice?
Weirdish question, remember when Baby Stark was interviewed for a magazine last chapter? What questions would you like to ask her? She might just answer and you could get a mention in the chapter.

ATTENTION KASTLE NETWORK WRITER PEEPS.
@thesandwich-savedme & myself have decided to host a Kastle College fanfic group effort AU!
What does this mean?
It means, that we’ll be offering college events for a ‘verse’ type of situation for ya’ll to claim and write. We’ll give you character specifics for this universe (which I’ll have typed up here.) that you can reference. (We’ll be including most everyone from the Marvel Netflix series so you can write them!)
What are the rules?
It’s simple, message me @nxtyourfirstrodeo if you’d like a specific event/fic you want to write & I’ll add you to that. Just write it! It’s first come first serve though, if you’d like to attempt to do a joint effort with the person who got first dibs, you’re welcome to do that. Otherwise, pick something else! You can write smut or fluff. It’s up to you. You’re also welcome to do something angsty, but we figured Kastle is angsty in canon so fluff would be more fun in an AU setting. ;-)
Where do I post updates of it?
You can post it both here & on A03. The special tag we’re going to give it is: U Never Lie To Me. Get it? U as in.... University? We’re so clever. ;-) So you can post anything on the series to that tag. Hell, make fanart or something if you’re inspired. I’m sure we’d all love it!
@thesandwich-savedme will update more/new events you can claim as she comes up with them so keep an eye on this post, I’ll reblog it as often as I remember! There might be more added depending on the interest of this! :-)
Setting: Columbia University
The Characters:
Karen Page: Sophomore. Journalism major. Works for the school paper, Overachiever. Matt Murdock’s ex. Jessica Jones’ roommate. Probably in too many clubs on campus.
Frank Castle: Junior. ROTC. Tight End for the Columbia University football team. (Nickname is The Punisher) Undecided major. Loves dogs and coffee.  Has a dog named Max. (Who may or may not have been swiped from & been a rival teams mascot...) Plays guitar and sings but literally no one knows about that.
Matt Murdock: Junior. Pre-law. Karen’s ex. Elektra’s new boyfriend. Foggy’s best friend. Doesn’t like Frank Castle. Has ‘spidey senses’, according to Foggy, despite being blind. Is in (or founded, it’s unclear) the Parkour club on campus.
Foggy Nelson: Junior. Pre-law. Matt’s best friend. Karen’s friend. Marci’s boyfriend. Kills it on the dance floor. National Honor Society. Obsessed with the Drama department.
Elektra Natchios: Junior. International Affairs major. Diplomats daughter. Filthy Rich. Member of Kappa Alpha Theta sorority. Bitchy and ambitious. #HeadBitchInCharge.
Marci Stahl: Junior. Pre-law. Not super rich, but well off family. Member of Alpha Chi Omega sorority. Foggy’s girlfriend since Freshman year. Takes sorority rivalry with KAT seriously. (Aka nemesis to Elektra) Also in the National Honor Society.
Claire Temple: Senior. Pre-med. #SoDone with these kids and their shit. Mother Hen. Patches up too many people when she should be sleeping or studying. Science tutor for extra cash. Pretends she’s not into Luke Cage. (But totally is)
Luke Cage: Junior. Humanities major. Defensive end for the Columbia University football team. Close friends with Frank. Super into Claire and hits on her a lot.
Jessica Jones: Sophomore. Photography major. Karen’s roommate. Pretends she hates her, but secretly cares about her. Best friend to Trish Walker. Goes to all the campus parties for the free booze. Life motto: ‘Messy hair. Don’t care’ and owns a coffee mug with that on it unironically. Baggy sweatshirt connoisseur.
Trish Walker: Sophomore. Mass Communications major. Best friend to Jessica Jones. Works at the University radio station. Member of Alpha Chi Omega sorority. (Much to Elektra’s dismay) Is on Elektra’s ‘shit list’ because of that.
Danny Rand: Junior. Business major. Richer than Elektra. It’s debatable if he ever even attends classes. Is that weird kid who does meditation and yoga on the lawn a lot. Everyone mocks him until they need his help getting their stress levels down during finals. Dresses like a hippie a lot. Hacky sack enthusiast. Voice of zen and calmness.
Colleen Wing: Junior. Business major. Too nice. Probably helps everyone else before doing anything for herself. Danny’s high school sweetheart. Founded and runs the Women’s Self-Defense club on campus. Don’t hurt any of her friends or she’ll hunt you down. Is nice till you piss her off. Lacrosse team. (Postion Defender)

My song roots
Of the 600+ hymns in the 1991 Baptist Hymnal, the following list comprises the hymns that I remember singing with regularity prior to the 1991 publication.  All of the hymns listed here, to the best of my knowledge, were also in the 1977 New Broadman Hymnal (which was bound, organized, and typeset almost identically to the 1975 Baptist Hymnal.) Both the 1975 Baptist and 1977 New Broadman Hymnals were the hymnals I grew up with. The reason I opened with my statement about the 1991 Baptist Hymnal is that while there were many “new” hymns and songs included at that time of publication, I did not begin using it regularly in worship until between 1995 - 2006.  There are also many hymns that I became more familiar with in my later years that were included in all 3 of the hymnals mentioned above, however, they were not a regular part of my pre-college years. There are also other hymns, (i.e. A Mighty Fortress is Our God) which are absent from this list only because they were not a regular part of my youth even though I was familiar with them.
The main reason for this list is to identify a canon of song that was foundational to my spiritual development. In doing so, I was able to use the contents of the 1991 Baptist Hymnal in order to get some data that interested me. Out of approximately 662 hymns, the only ones that were sung with regularity are listed below – 149 out of 662. What is also interesting is that out of the 149 hymns below, only 131 were non-seasonal hymns. Of the 149, there are 10 Christmas, 3 Easter, and 5 Patriotic hymns/songs. So for most of the church year, the canon of song I grew up with consisted of 131 hymns. How do I know they were done regularly?  First, at 45 years old, I can still sing many of these, to some degree, from memory, and I haven’t used a hymnal or programed all but about 10 of these hymns regularly in worship for over a decade.  Second, I grew up in a very small congregation, and for a period my Father was the song leader and my Mother was the pianist.  I also served as song leader for 2 years before going off to college. Music was what we did.
Now here is the really interesting part. The order of service was usually: Song, Invocation, Song, Song, Welcome/Announcements, Song, Song, Offertory Prayer, Offertory (Choir or Instrumental), Sermon, Invitational Song, Dismissal Prayer. We did on average 6 hymns a week. But wait, we also had a different Sunday night service! Although we sang one less hymn on Sunday night, that still brings the total to 11 different hymns each Sunday chosen from the 131 non-seasonal hymns. And of course, we always omitted the 3rd verse of every 4 verse hymn. What I have realized through this little research exercise is that the reason why these hymns are so embedded into my memory is because with 11 different hymns each week out of 149 to choose from, there was a fair amount of repetition! Even if we did not repeat a hymn until the list had been exhausted, that would have only lasted 13.5 weeks into the year. At minimum, each hymn would have to be selected 3.8 times a year. But I know that is unrealistic because several hymns were more popular than others. At any rate, repetition was part of reason why these songs have been ingrained in me.
All this is to say that this exercise has given me a personal understanding of the importance of establishing a canon of song in my current ministry so that future generations will be able to pull from a rich history of song, albeit, not necessarily from a specific hymnal.  In my next post, I will look at the hymns and songs that have formed me from 2006 to the present.
Here is my list:

In China’s Xinjiang, surveillance is all pervasive |
There are few tougher locations for a international journalist to report from China than Xinjiang.
Particularly now.
Safety has been bolstered amid a brand new marketing campaign, which the federal government says is geared toward eradicating “Islamic extremism” in a province the place greater than half the inhabitants is Muslim.
Two weeks in the past state TV aired footage of what have been described as vocational colleges displaying Muslim women and men being taught language and job expertise. Most have been Uighur, a Turkic-language people who find themselves ethnically distinct from the Han Chinese language.
China’s leaders argue harsh measures are wanted to forestall violence related to Uighur separatism; violence that, they are saying, has claimed the lives of a whole lot of Chinese language individuals up to now decade.
Uighur safety personnel patrol close to the Id Gah Mosque in Kashgar in Xinjiang on this 2017 photograph [Ng Han Guan/AP]
Human rights teams say the faculties are, in truth, an unlimited community of re-education camps the place detainees are held indefinitely with out cost and compelled to denounce their religion and recite Communist Celebration propaganda.
The Economist journal lately described Xinjiang as “the proper police state”.
Throughout a short go to there two weeks in the past I noticed nothing to dispel that view.
‘Kill, kill, kill’
The surveillance is all pervasive. Streets bristle with CCTV cameras. In some cities there at the moment are police posts each 30 metres.
Since I used to be final there three years in the past, there is a new addition to the huge safety community of police and elite particular forces; a motley assortment of shopkeepers armed with wood sticks who’ve been skilled in safety measures. Twice a day exterior their premises they rehearse their defensive drills, generally shouting, “Kill, kill, kill.”
In 2015, it was nonetheless attainable to speak to native individuals, albeit discreetly. Not now.
For a Uighur to speak to a international journalist is to danger arrest. By coincidence, one of many Public Safety Bureau officers assigned to tail us – Michael – had been my minder throughout my earlier go to. And this time he wasn’t going to let the Al Jazeera crew out of his sight.
He was there to welcome us again as we have been making an attempt to examine right into a lodge, the place I had stayed on earlier visits.
Xinjiang: The story Beijing would not need reported | The Listening Put up
The sheepish workers at reception instructed me my reserving had been cancelled on the orders of the native authorities. A resigned shrug of the shoulders. There was nothing they might do.
As an alternative we have been supplied rooms in a government-owned lodge, the place uniformed and plain-clothed police lounge within the sprawling foyer.
Sinister, surreal, absurd
Xinjiang in the present day is each sinister and surreal, however sometimes the absurd makes an look. The ringtone on Michael’s telephone performs George Michael’s I am By no means Gonna Dance Once more. George Michael grew to become the soundtrack of our temporary keep in Kashgar, as a result of his telephone by no means stopped ringing.
Filming and reporting in Xinjiang has at all times been tightly managed. Nevertheless it’s in overdrive now.
I used to be compelled to delete numerous footage surreptitiously recorded on my iPhone. One confirmed a safety checkpoint, one other a padlocked Uighur store.
In a near-deserted market a giddy trio from native TV turned up. The reporter – like Michael – was additionally a Uighur. She needed to interview me about my impressions of Kashgar. I declined.
If I had instructed the reality our go to may need come to an excellent swifter finish than it did. Undeterred, the TV crew tagged alongside, that means our group had now grown to 10, lowering nonetheless additional any hopes of speaking to somebody – anybody.
One query hangs within the crisp autumn air: the place are all of the younger males? China’s authorities is eventually offering a few of the solutions. After denying the existence of internment camps, state-controlled media now proudly defend the coverage; a coverage that by many accounts is now being expanded.
China defends internment camps for Uighur Muslims
Kashgar, nearer to Baghdad than it’s to Beijing, is the biggest Uighur metropolis and is claimed to have 4 camps holding 120,000 individuals. The most important is reportedly in Quantity 5 Center Faculty, however I might not get to glimpse even the surface of that college. Based on Michael, such camps do not exist in Kashgar.
‘Love the Celebration’
As an alternative of a re-education camp we have been proven the surface of the Id Gah mosque, the largest in China. There’s been a mosque on this web site for greater than 600 years. A part of its facade is now peeling.
For the principally Chinese language guests, the mosque is simply one other vacationer attraction. Within the recessed entrance armed safety guards sit beneath a pink banner exhorting worshippers to, “Love the Celebration, love the nation.”
On a wall reverse the mosque, looped photos of President Xi Jinping, taken throughout his journey to Xinjiang in 2014, are projected onto an enormous display screen. One reveals him surrounded by a gaggle of smiling Uighur youngsters.
It was shortly after this journey that greater than 40 individuals have been killed throughout a bombing and knife assault within the provincial capital, Urumqi. The federal government blamed Uighur separatists, and the crackdown started.
The traditional a part of Kashgar stays closed. It was apparently being rebuilt, simply because it was the final time I used to be right here in October 2015. As an alternative we have been taken to a pretend model of the Previous Metropolis, full with cultural performances reflecting distant – versus latest – Uighur historical past.
It was simply after my colleague had taken the traditional metaphorical picture of a caged hen that the temper of our hosts began to vary.
‘Whose facet are you on?’
They suspected – rightly – that we weren’t shopping for into the sanitised narrative. In a small native cafe, the place we had stopped for a break, a very hostile feminine official from the native propaganda division demanded to take a look at every little thing we had thus far filmed.
Al Jazeera World – The Uighurs: Exterior Exile
She turned her ire on my Chinese language colleague. “Whose facet are you on?” she yelled.
At first we refused her demand. By now there have been 15 uniformed and plain-clothed policemen crammed into the tiny cafe. Taking part in to the gallery, Ms Yang introduced loudly: “We have to preserve them in Kashgar for additional investigation.”
The implication was clear. We’d not be allowed to go away until our materials was vetted. At instances like this my speedy concern is for my Chinese language colleagues. I’ve a international passport. They do not and don’t have any safety.
We have been held for 2 hours, throughout which era they inspected each body we had shot. They managed to make sure our deleted recordsdata couldn’t be recovered. It had been day for Kashgar’s propaganda division.
The surveillance began even earlier than I had left Beijing.
As an accredited journalist, my title had been flagged the second I checked in for the flight to Urumqi. 4-and-a-half hours later plain-clothed police have been ready for me within the arrivals corridor. Given I gave the impression to be the one non-Asian face I would not have been exhausting to identify.
An hour later the identical males appeared within the foyer of my lodge. One even took the room subsequent to mine, presumably to see if I tried to interview anybody there.
At first they stopped us filming innocuous avenue scenes. They later relented, however solely permitted filming of their presence. “Don’t discuss to anybody,” we have been repeatedly warned.
Safety officers favour informal avenue fashion with ironic thrives. My favorite: “Depart Me Alone.”
There was no likelihood of the Al Jazeera crew being left alone in Xinjiang. Within the Kashgar lodge there have been not less than 20 officers within the foyer, there for only one purpose: us.
Surveillance state
Official figures present China’s surveillance funds now outstrips the quantity spent on defence. I puzzled what the associated fee to Chinese language taxpayers had been of the operation to watch three journalists.
Strange Uighurs spend a lot of their life queuing. Outdoors Urumqi’s worldwide bazaar, Uighurs and Han Chinese language lined up at separate safety checkpoints. Uighurs are searched extra completely. Naturally, we weren’t allowed to movie any of that.
China seeks to revive ‘Silk Street’ challenge
Not like my earlier go to, we additionally weren’t allowed to movie inside a Uighur house. In that case, I may need seen if it was true that every one knives now should be chained to partitions.
Xinjiang is on the coronary heart of certainly one of President Xi Jinping’s signature financial insurance policies; the One Belt, One Street initiative. The plan envisages revitalising the fabled Silk Street buying and selling routes to hyperlink China to Europe and the Center East by means of huge infrastructure tasks.
However for that formidable plan to work, Xinjiang has to work.
China’s leaders say Uighurs are benefiting from poverty eradication programmes. On October 24, the Individuals’s Every day reported greater than $6bn had been spent on enhancing the lives of virtually two million Uighurs.
However that’s nonetheless a drop within the ocean in comparison with what the federal government is spending on safety and surveillance in Xinjiang.
And one thing else is clearly obvious.
Xinjiang has turn into one other space that’s now all however off limits to international journalists.

FloGymnastics: What’s your favorite occasion to perform on and why? Taylor Houchin: I might say vault because it’s an event where I can be as powerful as I want. I do not must virtually manipulate it a whole lot so that’s high-quality. Quite a few [the other] events, you need to really use your mind and clearly cognizance on it. [Vault] is one of the ones where you may permit your self go and simply move it.
What’s the maximum challenging talent you’ve found out and what made it tough for you? The most difficult would Likely be my vault because it’s an honestly lengthy procedure that took me from level nine thus far to fully get the talent. It takes the time to accumulate the inspiration of that vault.
What changed into the biggest element you took away from regionals that you’ll use heading into nationals? I would say how effective it is to work as a team and to paintings for something apart from ourselves. We attempted to awareness on placing all of our accept as true within a person. So we did the allow Your Mild Shine venture, so I permit my Mild shine for my grandpa. Some humans did it for the crew, Some humans did it for other own family members or friends. I suppose what was vital became to no longer get egocentric inside the competition. If something goes wrong, to recall why we’re doing it and placed our faith back into the one’s human beings or our teammates [instead of] making all of it approximately ourselves.
How has the adversity that your team has confronted in the course of this season helped put together you for the postseason? I suppose it’s helped us in A lot of methods now not just with gymnastics but with lifestyles itself, due to the fact matters aren’t continually going to go flawlessly and it is essential to learn how to cope with the one’s matters earlier than they get thrown at you. We’ve got found out about a way to manage those troubles earlier than they come alongside so that way if we get to nationals and perhaps we don’t begin the manner we need to. Rather than giving up, we can push thru that and dig deeper.
What has the transition been like going from club to college? it’s been very specific. The toughest component could Possibly be the back-to-back weekends. That element’s been problematic and tough on our body and stuff like that. it’s been very rewarding for the equal time and it’s first-class to have 14 other girls who are going via the same component that I’m and a coaching team of workers that has been doing this for a while and knows the problem that incorporates it and the hassle and the way this occurs nearly on every occasion. [They] supply us a little bit of slack with the transition period and no longer being too difficult on us or making it any more difficult than it has to be.
Has there been something which you’ve accomplished to put together for that regular grind of competition week in and week out? What is a quality about the university is that you have a steady personnel on the obligation for assisting you with accidents and stuff like that? so that component when it comes to doing remedy and ice tube and taping, it all just allows with regards to the grind. You just have to alternate your mindset. I do not want to say push your frame to the factor wherein it’s now not safe, as it’s obviously nonetheless secure, but finding that extra push deep down in you which you did not recognize you had.
How do you get better from a fall? In my view, I simply try to put it behind me and cognizance on whoever’s up. I recognize that my teammates have my again and I understand that each woman is capable of hitting that ordinary the manner that they exercise. I suppose the biggest issue for me For my part is setting it in my past and simply seeking to overlook approximately it and not reflect consideration on what I may want to have completed in another way. I just attempt to push that at the back of me. Inside our group, I suppose the most important aspect is simply believed. When you have to move up after someone falls, you recognize there may be a glaringly greater strain on you to hit. So As opposed to focusing on that pressure, I think we strive to surely assist that character earlier than they go and clearly inspire them, (announcing) “You have got this. We exercise this every day. That is you.” I simply try to remind that individual up until that they have this and attempt not to let them get off their head an excessive amount of approximately the strain that comes with it.
