I still fundamentally believe that indie companies are not prepared to be running official discord servers with thousands of people in them.
Servers take a lot of work to moderate and communities like that can become full of bad actors that toe the line of what is and isn't in the rules. Communities with these large spaces need to be moderated properly, while at the same time moderation itself is a huge task that easily causes burn out.
To top it all off, I have yet to hear a situation where said moderators were anything but a volunteer position. So the people dealing with the blunt of the behaviour and aren't compensated for it. This is understandable in fanrun communities where none of it involves money, but 'official' discord servers are active promotion of said company. And anything that goes badly in that server is a reflection on that company.
I've heard multiple horror stories from various servers of the ways all discord servers can go wrong. And i dont think the indie companies behind this have any malice, but there is a lot of incompotence and a lack of knowledge for what to do in this modern form of communication. I understand its probably a much needed facet of advertisment for small companies.
If they are making these spaces they need to be prepared to dealing with harrasment, stalking, bigotry, sexual comments, trauma dumping/suicide threats etc. Conflict resolution skills are a big deal. When you create a community space, you are responsible for said community space.
