ESFJs are.. interesting. when they're in love, every little thing their partners do, affect the way they judge their relationship. here, leehan would definitely be the one who's into physical affection a lot. for him, a day without your hugs and kisses, or cuddles right after waking up, is enough for him to jump into conclusions that maybe your day was bad, or that you had a nightmare. he'd do everything, in his favors to make your day better. leaving you in bed, with a forehead kiss, and going out of his way to bring you breakfast in bed is something i definitely think he'll do a lot! the type to be totally into pda because he desperately needs people to know that he has the most prettiest, cutest, sexiest, smartest and loving girlfriend on this entire planet!

I’m sure I’ll forget a lot of things and smack my own forehead in shame afterwards, but this is what comes to mind right away:

Literature:

Anything ever written by Victor Hugo is a masterpiece. This dude was a terrible human being, but he sure knew how to write, and he contributed to major changes in the social conscience of his contemporaries on many important topics (including but not limited to the death penalty and child labour). To give you a taste, here is my favourite poem ever, which he wrote, because of course he did.

My favourite piece of literature across all categories, though, is and forever will be Cyrano de Bergerac by Edmond Rostand — the story of a man who convinced himself his unusually long nose makes him monstruous. The concept sounds so silly, I know, but this play is a masterpiece and a wonderful love letter to the French language.

Which brings me to my favourite comic series: De Cape et de Crocs by Alain Ayroles and Jean-Luc Masbou! Basically a twelve-volume-long fix-it fic, disguised as a tribute to French literature. Also, a beautiful bromance.

Visual arts:

Basically everyone in France can quote at least one line from Kaamelott, a comedic (?) series derived from the Arthurian legend. It is so well researched and hilarious — until it isn’t.

I’m sure there’s like, a very obvious movie choice that will come back to me in a minute, but I was raised on Disney and Scooby-Doo, so these are clogging my brain at the moment. Just give it time.

When I was very young, I would watch TV at my grandparents’ and enjoy Les Hydronautes, an animated series about an extraterrestrial explorer documenting the Earth’s marine wildlife in an effort to learn how to better protect her own planet (Aka There Are Many Benefits To Being A Marine Biologist: The Series), as well as C’est pas sorcier, a series of very fun documentaries on a plethora of subjects, from lavender farming to volcanic eruptions.

Obviously, Miraculous gets a place on the list too! 🐞🐈‍⬛

EDIT BECAUSE I FORGOT: Fantomette the animated series! This show is single-handedly responsible for my taste for smart women with amazing hair who ride motorbikes and kick ass. It even had Egytpology as a key part of the plot.

Music:

For me Formidable by Charles Aznavour is a classic, a very cute song, and a great place to start if you want to learn French!

A few other favourites include Fanny Ardant et moi by Vincent Delerm, Le Dîner by Bénabar (extremely funny to listen to while thinking about the Diamonds’ Dance) and J’ai cherché by Amir (This one is… Borderline when it comes to grammar, but cute enough that I grin and bear it. Also, it got us an honourable ranking at the Eurovision a while back, which is rare enough to be celebrated).

ALSO. I complain too much about bad translations and poor writing (see previous bullet point) not to show you kids how it’s done with Je vole from Aladdin (a genius play on words which delves into the two significations of the verb “voler”: to fly or to steal).

Video games:

Long ago, before I discovered the wonderful world of Nintendo, I would wait patiently every month for the new issue of Toboclic. This game had everything: cute animal mascots, stories, mini-games, arts-and-crafts suggestions, catchy songs, interactive documentaries… I’m sure my parents still have the CDs somewhere, but they probably don’t run anymore, which is a shame. I miss my friends.

Games I Played In 2024 And Whether Or Not I Thought They Were Good (Part 2/?)

This time we're gonna open up with like, three different Ace Attorney fancases, because it turns out there's a lot of really good ones out there.

A Turnabout to El Dorado

DWaM doesn't miss. Years after a failed expedition to find the lost city of gold, one of the participants is murdered in a remote cabin in the woods. The accused is absolutely determined not to give Phoenix a single useful piece of information, largely because what actually happened has so many different layers of twist going on you would not believe it.

Also, you can get a piggyback ride from Dick Gumshoe, and that's only like the fourth or fifth greatest thing that happens in it. Very polished, edge-of-your-seat stuff.

The Torrential Turnabout

The tone and framing device of this one is really bizarre at first- it opens with this Zero Escape-ass deathgame situation, then pivots to Mia Fey solving a seemingly unrelated murder at a hospice, and everyone's being weirdly meta and out of character...

...but then, you realize what's going on, and it all makes sense, and everything is hilarious in hindsight. The case itself is incredible, too- apart from a slightly dodgy timed segment in part 6, the case logic all fits together elegantly and I didn't need a walkthrough too often. A great cast and clever writing bring it together into something incredible.

Turnabout in the Lighthouse of Lunacy

This one's nutty. The hook is that you're defending yourself against charges for a murder you totally do see yourself commit, on-screen, and you have to apply the classic Ace Attorney bullshitting and contradiction-seeking to get yourself off the hook when you are in fact guilty.

But that's not where it stops. In the course of picking at the contradictions you find, you uncover a truly insane web of additional bullshit hiding beneath the surface of a seemingly simple case that you saw happen. There is so much going on at this weirdass lighthouse auction, and it really lives up to the title. Extremely impressive case construction.

(I'd say it's... a little more disjointed than the other two? It's an original cast, with some character dynamics that seem to be either setting up a sequel or pulling from some other canon, and don't really go anywhere vis-a-vis the case, like the magic time-stop stuff or the history with the detective club. It's also one I had to go to the walkthrough well for a little more often than usual, as might be expected from the premise.)

Arzette: The Jewel of Faramore

Alright, getting away from AA fancases, here's my take on this one:

...Actually before the take: I'll tell you what it is. It is to the Zelda CD-i games what Bug Fables is to Paper Mario. A thorough style reproduction, featuring jankily-animated hand-drawn cutscenes, awkward voice acting, and uncomfortable comedy that stops just a hair shy of actually being funny (and that's what's funny about it.) They even got like, the original voice actors and stuff. It's a love letter to those games and seems designed from the ground up to be memed on. (In fact, there's a mod called Farcette that is a YTP'd version of the existing game, to complete the circle of life.)

Now the take: it's doing some weird stuff story-wise. It's really hard to tell when the awkwardness is on purpose, because that's like 90% of the art, but... it does feel like it kind of wants you to take Arzette seriously and think she's a cool heroine. And it does some things in service of that which are... strange choices?

The plot is that Arzette is the princess of a generic fantasy kingdom that gets menaced by an evil demon lord every [number with zeroes on the end] years and has to be sealed in a magic book using a magic jewel by the heir of the royal bloodline. Standard stuff. But then it... makes some weird, awkward stabs at subverting that standard stuff with clever plot twists? But they're... not. They kind of come out of nowhere and don't add anything.

First: Arzette's clever subversion of this cycle of demon lord stuff is "instead of sealing him in the magic book, just put the magic in a sword and kill the badguy!" And... like, it's really bending over backwards to frame "hero kills villain with a magic sword" as subversive. Like they made a fake Gordian Knot to make a show of cutting. The vibe is like, those "bad government? kill them" memes, just sort of espousing the idea that nonviolent solutions to problems are for naive libs who're just perpetuating the problem... but with a plot that's way too arch and goofy for that idea to stand up even if I agreed with it.

Second: Right at the very end, like in the last five seconds of the game, when Arzette is about to inherit the kingdom and become queen, she suddenly goes "actually no, we shouldn't have a monarchy. i declare we're a democracy now!" and everybody cheers and that's the end, fade to black. Which... would be perfectly fine, if that had been even slightly a theme beforehand. They didn't really depict the dinner king knockoff guy as bad in any way, and in fact tried to give him a genuinely emotional and bittersweet death scene. If it was trying to be anti-monarchist, it wasn't trying very hard!

That said, all of that is nitpicking. It's a perfectly fine game, doing what it set out to do with a ton of polish. It's fun, managed to get some big laughs out of me (the blacksmith quest is great), and it doesn't outstay its welcome, either- I 100%'d it in under four hours.

Slay the Princess

This one was fun! It's sort of... The Stanley Parable as a visual novel? You have a very simple quest: go into the basement and slay the princess chained up down there, or she'll destroy the world. But the variety of choices you have vis-a-vis the implementation of this straightforward quest gives rise to, like... I kind of don't want to spoil it, but it does some very spooky and effective meta stuff. Figuring out what the deal is with this princess and the narrator (played by the Magnus Archives guy) telling you to kill her is a good time.

I will say I was slightly disappointed by where it ended up? Just like, insofar as what the princess was thematically about seemed to be pushing in one direction, but then at the end it turned around and went in a different, slightly less interesting direction.

It's hard to say how much of that was an artifact of the choices I brought to the game, though- it's a thing that mutates and behaves very differently depending on how you play it. Worth a play!

Fire Emblem Engage

I did a whole big review of this one earlier this year, so here's that. The upshot is: it's mechanically probably the best FE I've played (besides the annoying monastery Somniel stuff), but the story is like, hilariously stupid. But it's stupid in a "wow, this isn't even trying, this is saturday morning cartoon shit" way, and not in an infuriating Fire Emblem Fates "please take us so so seriously as our idiot characters use tropes instead of brains to act out the dumbest tragedy we could think of" way. It's all impossible to take seriously, but it also doesn't care if you're taking it seriously, so it's not offensively bad.

Home Safety Hotline

This one I played primarily because the Game Grumps were so, so egregiously bad at it and I had to prove I could do better.

The premise is: you're a new hire for a help line, and take calls from homeowners having problems with minor pests. You listen to their issues, look up what the causes of those issues are in a database of common home safety risks, and send them dossiers of information. You win by accurately diagnosing their issues.

Also, it's a horror game and the "common home safety risks" include more and more SCP shit as you do well and unlock higher clearance.

It's... fine! It's fun. It works. What they should've done is spook the player with some weird stuff in their room or in the interface, and then later explain what kind of danger you've been in the whole time by unlocking an entry. That could've been scary and interesting! Instead it's only kind of scary and interesting. There's a few solidly fucked-up horrors in that database, and some chills when you identify a caller's problem and it becomes immediately apparently that it's too late for them, but largely you the player are insulated from all this.

(There's a metaplot about the safety corporation you're working for itself being a scary horror monster, but it doesn't really do anything interesting. It just goes "oooooh, your job is a spooky magic cult, aren't you scared of that??" and like. No not really.)

Murders on the Yangtze River

This is a very competently-executed murder mystery game! It has all the standard murder mystery game mechanics. But more interestingly, it's set in turn-of-the-century Qing Dynasty China, which isn't a setting I'd really read anything in before. It's very effective as a period piece, and I learned a lot! Die Drei Fragezeichen (the three questionmarks) is a series of German books based on a much much shorter series of U.S American books aimed at like 13 year olds? But it's really of an all ages situation because the really old ones have been around for more than fifty years

(And yes I do have a bookshelf full of them. I was a real fan when I was little. My mum used to buy me the new one every now and again and I still have all of them. Some of them are from when she was little, I swear it's true. )

The only reason it isn't two bookshelfs is because the real star of the show were the ✨audio plays✨

(They were first on cassette and then on CD and we got most of those from the library. Many long car journeys were spent that way)

The only CD on my bookshelf is a somewhat experimental box set that has three stories with three mysteries set in alternate versions of the same day? And I remember them creeping me the fuck out, all three of them. Although the one with the stalker was the worst one. And the one with the movie projector was also fuckin hair raising. Anyways.

They made another movie last year! The ones before that were more "miss" than "hit" but this one was perfect omg.

I wanted to go see it at the movies but then I had grown up stuff to do so I watched it on Netflix in the end.

Anyways. The stories are about these three boys (age varies between 12 and 16-ish depending on the story) from California who own and operate a detective agency, solve mysteries and get themselves into hair-raising trouble on a regular basis.

Their base of operations is in a scrapyard owned by one of their families which I remember was just the coolest thing to little me. (It still is, honestly. I make art out of junk and scrap. That would be living the dream)

There's still new books coming out but I don't read them much anymore. The folks who voice the characters still do liveshows that fill stadiums (I know two folks who have been, @excelsian and @praezisia and it must've been pretty awesome from what they said)

Oh and me and Exce also watched a recording of one of those liveshows together and like. That shit was wild. 8/10

I saw one of the episodes on vinyl last summer. I had to restrain myself because I don't own a record player.

So for a month or two, I took a break from looking at eBay for Powerpuff Girls merchandise (as I’m want to do) and wouldn’t you know it, I missed out on something that I desperately would’ve wanted to buy. 😩

STYLE GUIDES!!! Uggghhhhh!!! 😭

I’m incredibly bummed about missing out because I’m so intrigued by these! So, if you don't know, these aren't guides for anything to do with animation: these are guides on how to use assets for stuff such as advertising and merchandising. It seems that the one on the left is a style guide created after the movie, and it looks like the middle one must have been from the beginning of the series’ run. I’m placing the one on the right in the middle of the two… but like, when? Why did they make another one? Was that one made before the movie (actually, I think the other one might have been supplemental art for the middle one or something… but I’m not 100% sure)?

I doubt whoever purchased them is going to scan them and put them online (so sad!), but maybe I’m wrong. These are so cool, and I really wish I could take a peek and see how these were all written, and what all the differences are between the different design styles and branding guidelines. And I want those CDs! I need those .eps files! 😩😩😩

Nowadays, with the newer Powerpuff Girls stuff, I’m sure people are just getting a PDF and some kind of file cloud link sent to them with all of this information. You don’t get cool physical books like this anymore. Maybe one day they’ll pop up on eBay again and I can snag one of them, but it would’ve been so awesome to get all three at once. See, these are a LOT better than rancid cereal!

EDIT: I deliberately queued this to post before I tried bidding on a style guide I found that was still up for grabs for the PPG movie (not that I don’t love you all but I really, really wanted it and I was 100% prepared to share it here anyway)… and I lost the bid today. I’m even more bummed out! Ugh! 😭

Hey Mr. Radguy, do you know where this Daisuke art was originally used/what it was used for? I've never seen it before until seeing this image. This is a wallpaper from the Guilty Gear Desktop Accessories Vol. 1 CD-ROM. Identifying the exact stock image used for the background would be cool too.

This illustration haunts me because I genuinely have no idea what it was used for. The style is 100% from the Missing Link era, which is confirmed by this photo of what looks like a telephone card that's copyright dated 1998. This was from Volcanic Fighter's images archive that he shared with me. I don't know where he found it:

This is the only other instance I know of this illustration being used. It isn't in any of the art books and wasn't printed on any of the Broccoli trading cards. I don't think it ever had an official art print version either, but those seem to have been pretty uncommon in the ML era. With how refined the style is compared to a lot of the other ML art, I wonder if it wasn't drawn sometime after Missing Link's release. Unfortunately, we'll probably never know. It seems like a lot of Arc System Works' art records from before about GGXX got destroyed or lost somehow.

Something fun/interesting about this, though, is that it's one of only two illustrations I know of were Daisuke Ishiwatari actually signed it. The other one is the illustration used for the GG Comic Anthology (1998) cover, which was also reprinted on a Broccoli card, but it's a bit harder to see the detail there. Bottom right, under the G.GEAR bit.

This one's been reprinted in some books too. I don't know why the Sol and Ky one wasn't ever reprinted though...

Anyway. To answer your question: I genuinely have no idea but it's highly possible it was done for a promotional telephone card and that's all it was ever used for until the wallpaper in the accessories pack. It wouldn't be the first time Daisuke did art for a promotional card that was never used again...

i just uncovered some of my stepsis' dusty japanese CDs from around 2010-2013 and i really miss CDs as a mainstream art. they came with little drawings on paper or even mini manga books or promotion drawings and some of the CDs were made to look like the moon and stuff.

what a shame that modern PCs don't even have HDMI slots let alone CD or DVD ones. what is the world coming to? how am i supposed to enjoy my perfume/capsule/kyary pamyu pamyu/soutaiseiriron 1200yen CDs?

so anyway, there's this band out of the city of Milwaukee called Hero of a Hundred Fights. they dropped a couple CDs in the early 2000s and seem to have broken up, though all their members have been in bands since. that'll be important a little later. for now, Hero of a Hundred Fights are important to me on 2 levels:

I'm a Wisconsinite who has a tiny bit of an obsession with local history and art and really fuck with their weird mathy little corner of the 2000s hardcore scene

I'm a Faction Paradox fan and their 2001 EP The Remote, The Cold contains numerous references to the series! if you've heard of this EP before, it was probably in the context of some "music that references Faction Paradox" list or another

about #2... see, everyone already knows that track 2 is called Faction Paradox and track 3 is called The Celestis. we've all long since put together that the title is a reference to Lawrence Miles' Interference. but what about the lyrics? unfortunately, we don't know. they're not online, and the vocals are good, mind, but rather incoherent.

well, we didn't know. until I ordered a CD copy for like $8 lol. that's all it took! so here you go, the lyrics booklet plus some of the other artwork featured on the CD. artist Nick Slough did a great job on this art and it's a shame only the cover is widely available online (though that's hardly a problem unique to the physical version of this one album). turns out, this is some kinda concept album based on the Miles novel Interference. cool! really love the lyrics on Rope especially. "I need your blood to get this vessel running" and "my life was in your hands, I cut them off and now they're mine" are both raw as hell.

the cover art is pretty interesting. this album was recorded in 2000, released in 2001. the entire creative process occurred before the first standalone Faction Paradox release, The Book of the War. this means the album is entirely Doctor Who-based, not based on the FP series itself. it also means, if we assume the humanoid characters on the art are supposed to be the Remote, that this is the first-ever professional art depicting them!

disclaimer: the booklet lyrics don't 100% match up with what's said in the songs! it's mostly accurate but unfortunately there are some sections missing, some repeated bits that are only written once et al. that's all par for the course but I figured I'd mention it - especially in the case anybody wants to use this to transcribe the lyrics on Genius or some other site like that.

and while we're here, Hero 100 member William Zientara has been in a billion different bands, and I think he's probably the most responsible for the Doctor Who theme on this album. See, he was also in a short-lived band called Managara - named after a Doctor Who tie-in novel so obscure even I, owner of a complete set of Virgin New Adventures who spends my work breaks combing through digital copies of old fanzines, have only ever heard it discussed a handful of times. one of their songs is called Happiness Patrol. more recently, in 2021, he was in the band Fuiguirnet, who have a song called What Grows From the Seeds of Doom! which means Zientara has been randomly tossing Doctor Who references into songs from at least three different bands for twenty years!

HARIN KIM HEADCANONS

One of the oldest and wisest members of the greaser clique, I feel like all the advice she gives is pretty sage, despite her outwardly delinquent personality.

Very family oriented, even if its found family, she seems to be pretty likely to play den mother for the greasers. She knows what they’re capable of but she also knows their limits, that’s a good friend to have. The clinginess pays off, especially if her friends are feeling a little down on their luck, it’s nice to know that there’s always someone in their corner.

Puts the least possible effort into her hair and it looks absolutely flawless every time, even if someone tries to mess it up it just seems to fall back into an even better hairstyle, this is genuinely frustrating to other students who put a LOT more effort into keeping their hair nice. Harin is just immune to school air.

Uses a CD Walkman in the shop when she’s working on her bike, she illegally makes mixtapes and burns them onto cds with little doodles on the front. She has literally hundreds, including full torrented albums. Are you having a party? Harin is your girl for illegal party CDs

Absolutely DOMINATES in art class, not that its a competition, but if it was... She’d definitely win.Harin probably gets a lot of shit from other teachers for her incessant margin doodles but Miss Philips absolutely loves her creative spirit and genuine talent for drawing, its nice to see a student treating art class seriously instead of just a blowoff to draw dicks or make out in the supply closet.

Watches the sunset every single night, she will literally make her plans around the sunset so she doesnt miss it. It was a little tradition she started to make herself smile when she was a scared little freshman but she kept the tradition going up until her senior year. Norton quite likes the sunset too so sometimes they’ll share a smoke and sit on the roof to watch the sun go down over bullworth.

Does pretty well on her own if she’s not got any other greasers lingering around, the only clique that really give her any trouble is the preps and they’re pretty easy to take down. A leg swing can get them on the floor in no time… even then the preps dont go as hard on her as they could, Bif tries to keep them in line. That poor, poor lovesick puppy. Another huge help is the fact that she’s in Russell’s good books. No one in their right mind would even dream of starting something with Russell… well apart from Jimmy but he’s always gonna be a bit of a loose cannon.

Harin seems like a pretty amicable person, she’s got one of those faces that just makes you feel so safe. She’s like, genetically friendly looking if that makes sense. She’s so beautiful it makes you feel bad for even bumping her in the hallway. Not that she can’t handle herself, quite the opposite as i mentioned above but it just…. Feels wrong to whale on someone so beautiful, even if she’s trying to start something.

I have no plans on writing it no, so I'm happy to share my original notes! It was gonna surround the Low Water Party! Forgive me, it's messy.

(sequel to deepest of metros. Fluff/Daily Life based. Ahato wants to get back into music again after so long. Callie wants to do the same but her mixed feelings about her career is a bit difficult with the things she likes now vs the things shes known for. They plan the Low Water Party from the art book. They talk about this over:

-Building feelings towards each other.

-Ahato being soft towards Paul as a like, surrogate little sibling. 

-Learning that Ahato’s music somehow having been traveled above ground during Mako and Ahato’s original escape (Mako made her give CDS to random people they passed he was so embarrassing, she misses him)

-Physical therapy stuff.

-And discussing family and just Ahato in general getting used to living more while dealing with the past.

They spread the low water party via gossip. At the low water party Ahato decides not to go out, she’s not ready yet. But they let her music play and she’s happy to see people happy. Callie yanking out Octavio for a song. And it just getting crazy. Callie and Ahato eventually sneak off to talk again. And they kiss. They’re awkward about it but its cute)
