hey, so I'm trying to figure out what places would be good to sell my own art at, and I'm wondering- what has been your experience with selling on etsy? I've heard mixed reviews from people, and I want to know your perspective as an etsy seller.

etsy is not perfect but i think it gets a little more shit than it deserves, i've thought about opening my own website but generally i'm actually pretty okay with the services i get on etsy compared to what it costs so i'm just gonna make a subjective pros/cons list for you under the cut (because its loooong)

oh and if anyone else has experience selling on etsy and would like to add their two cents in the replies/reblogs please do!

Pros

⭐ The search function - this is etsy's biggest selling point. it already has a dedicated userbase of millions of people and a search feature to help them find your shop, which takes a lot of the load of marketing off your shoulders, and marketing is a huge factor for pushing sales. i am not good at marketing and a lot of my sales just come from people searching my stuff up lol

⭐ Purchase protection program - if USPS loses or damages your package, you file a missing package report and they confirm they don't know where it is, Etsy will refund your buyers order out of their own pocket (under $250). this is my favorite etsy feature because USPS likes to eat packages every now and again. delicious keychains. if you had your own storefront, you'd just have to replace the order yourself.

⭐ Share & Save program - every time someone makes an order on your shop through a special Share & Save link, etsy will refund you 4% of the fees. it's a nice perk to doing some of your own marketing and it helps combat the moderately high etsy fees!

Trackable letter mail - selling stickers but think it's insane to charge $4 shipping? you can buy letter mail labels for about the rate of regular postage, which is like .65c. this tracking is done through etsy though so you can't track with usps, but it does give customers a little peace of mind. this only works in the 50 US states though.

Customs forms built into your shipping label - shipping internationally is a nightmare. etsy makes it easy though, generating everything you need to ship internationally on one label that you just have to sign and date and slap on your package like normal. for some countries they will actually just have your package sent to a domestic facility where they literally do all that for you. this is miles easier than having to do all that paperwork yourself.

buy shipping labels directly from etsy - related point, and just what it says on the tin. when you fulfill an order, you can buy your labels right there on Etsy so you don't have to mess around with a third party website. it comes out of your sale funds so you don't need to charge a card or a bank account or anything.

star seller program - some people say this is completely useless but i actually disagree! it's incredibly easy to earn this badge, and it lets buyers know you've got some of the best products, shipping, and customer service around. it helps you stand out from some of the more... questionable shops on the website.

sales tax - they remit sales tax for you. i don't think any of the other online platforms similar to etsy do this but i could be wrong. doing any kind of taxes sucks so i consider it a perk if they do it for you.

website promotions - every now and again etsy likes to host sales out of their own pocket. you get all the perks of having a sale without eating into ur profit margin. HUGE sale booster

generally the site is just very easy to learn and use and it's very beginner and dumbass friendly. i say this as a former beginner and current dumbass 👍

Cons

❌ the fees. oogh the fees. they claim it's just a 6.5% fee per sale, but on top of that you have to pay .20c automatically for every individual item you sell, plus there are processing fees (3% + .25c) that apply both to the item you sold AND the cost of shipping. i think it comes out to like 10% total in fees on average @ > @

❌ but wait, there's more fees! if you make more than $10k in sales a year (very easy number to hit actually) you are forced to participate in offsite ads, which i believe takes 15% of your total sale on top of the fees in the previous point. these kinds of sales are not as common as you'd think, but it's still annoying having a couple bucks shaved off your profits a few times a month because of them.

corporate bullshit - etsy is like renting a space in a mall. you don't own your lot, nor the mall itself, so if upper management decides to make any stupid ass decisions, you just have to deal with it or pick up and move. if they decide to raise fees again, you just gotta Deal. you are a little bit helpless on this website unfortunately

the push for discounts - etsy is constantly shoving it in your face that they want you to do discounts. they want you to have free shipping on orders over $35, they want you to do 25% off or more on sales, they want you to have returning customer discounts and abandoned cart discounts and 'you recently favorited this item' discounts - but you already have to compete with the steep fees, and when a customer gets free shipping, you still owe USPS that $4-ish bucks to send the package. you don't have to do any of this, but they do reward participating shops by favoring them in the algorithm and search results, so you can feel like you're missing out.

there aren't as many cons imo but they Are steeper cons. generally etsy is very beginner friendly and easy to get into and set up, and in spite of everything i do actually recommend everyone looking to get into online retail start on etsy and perhaps move to other platforms in the future. plus, you can combat all the fees by just... making your prices a dollar or two higher than you initially wanted to, and using your 'save and share' link as frequently as possible. the fees are a little bit much, but you have to think about what you get in exchange:

the search is invaluable, you could argue the fees are partially a marketing budget lmao. if you have a private website you alone have to push traffic to your website, and not as many people know about things like shopify and bigcartel so they might not be as trusting putting their card details into it. i miss out on a lot of REALLY COOL STUFF because artists only advertise on instagram and i don't hear about them, meanwhile if i want some cool owl house stuff i can literally just search that in etsy and find a lot of TOH stuff super easily. i cannot highlight enough how GOOD the search function is, especially in this day and age where social media like instagram and twitter will blacklist your posts if you say words like 'shop' or 'sale' and now nobody can find your stuff in that website's search either. its very hard to do your own marketing now a days :(

being able to refund customer's lost orders out of the company's pocket is such a nice thing to fall back on if you have to and worth its weight in fees. USPS lost like... four or five packages of mine in december. that's like $100 or more worth of stuff that Etsy Covered Completely, and a lot of the times the customer will take that refund to make their order again. don't abuse this system, make sure you check with usps that the package is actually Gone, but it's a godsend when you don't make billions of dollars and eating the cost of lost orders would otherwise sting a bit.

if etsy did not make international shipping easy i simply would not ship anywhere but the US to be honest. shipping to europe is still a headache though but that's because europe is stupid

that's everything i can think of, but tl;dr yes please open an etsy 👍 i recommend it completely in spite of everything

i have 113 works on ao3. one of them is a multichapter containing two separate-but-connected short stories, which brings the tally up to 114. this is what happens when you publish a series of standalone flash fiction pieces individually lmao

2. What's your total AO3 word count?

oogh let's see...68,128 words

3. What fandoms do you write for?

i've now written for both tes and bg3! getting attached to a customizable player character and wanting to develop their story is usually what moves me to start writing fanfic. if i stopped playing rpgs i'd probably stop writing fanfic

4. What are your top five fics by kudos?

a simple solution threescore and nine the way an esteemed and venerable office silly

5. Do you respond to comments?

on ao3, i try to respond to all of them! i don't respond to tags that people leave on my work here on tumblr, but i read them all and really appreciate them

6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?

i'm thinking that it's a tie between the stomach for it (which ends the story of shurri as a plucky orphan learning about the good in people and starts the story of shurri as a traumatized pawn of empire) and as of the world untwisting

7. What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

most of the pieces about ravi and little shurri (in vignettes: solitude) end on a deliberately sweet and hopeful note—i try to write them so that it's possible to read them as standalones, without prior context about the characters, so it's important to finish them up in a way that suggests the overall tenor of their dynamic but the form's a little restrictive sometimes! if i wanted to really delve into the ways that they made each other's lives difficult and frustrating (the ways in which they were an average family, in other words), i'd have to write a novel

8. Do you get hate on fics?

it's never happened, to my recollection

9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?

i've included sex scenes in original works that called for sex scenes...i haven't yet run into a narrative reason to write any fanfic with on-the-page sex in it, but i've hinted at the sex lives of my characters in a few pieces, when relevant. it's not usually relevant! the style of my tes stuff is fairly middle-grade. not that diana wynne jones didn't write about sex but you'd be surprised to find a sex scene in the middle of howl's moving castle the likeliest scenario for future work is that i'll write about a character in flagrante if it's funny. enthir's in the faculty lounge smugly hinting that he gets around more than anyone else in the college (he sometimes flirts with birna, who ignores him) (smash cut to urag and ravi smoking in bed)

10. Do you write crossovers? What's the craziest one you've written?

i've never written a crossover

not to my knowledge! i've occasionally read bits of things that felt inspired by my style or subject matter and i love that. it's very flattering. i think i remember someone quoting one of my posts in their fic summary once?

gf and i have had one in the works forever. that it's not done yet is my fault. it takes me ten thousand years to write anything

i hate to say that the future of peace in any season ("the big wip") is in question but it's been in question since i started it...i chose to focus it on a series of events ten years out from the main storyline of tes v on purpose, so that readers wouldn't miss anything too crucial if i stalled out on it but i still have a lot of love for the project and work on it when i can. i'd really like to bring this one to you

what i often hear is that people like my dialogue. i'm glad...it's my favorite part of a story to write

very often i lose interest in a piece too quickly to finish writing it down. i have to set it aside until i get the urge to pick it up again. i'm working on a (currently) 1300-word piece right now that i started three years ago, and i wrote 900 of those words last week

ramblin about the Tf2 comics

Aww, that’s kinda sweet! From what I see in the comics, Spy is a man who could kill someone in seconds, who backstabs and betrays by blending in. But I love how he has his soft moments, like with Scout and that boy from the mall, and miss Pauling here and I absolutely adore that.

Also, this comic is a fucking gem. I love the facial expressions and the absurd humor lmaoo-

Another point I’m interested in is miss Pauling herself! She’s clearly not a good person, not being above murder and manipulating other people, all at the Administrator’s command. But I like how the comics show her struggles and how she’s slowly begin to question The Administrator.

From what I gather, miss Pauling may have both practical and sentimental reasons for staying loyal with the Administrator.

While The administrator sometimes tries to kill her (like that time she invited miss P for dinner but it turns out it was an ambush as a sort of employee review), she went as far as to apologize and told miss P that she’s proud of her. 

I’m not sure what their relationship is exactly outside of their boss-assistant relationship, but it’s close enough that I feel like miss Pauling is borderline desperate for validation and constantly justifies the Administrator’s actions. Also, the fact that miss P uses her true name when she’s questioning her motives makes it feel more... i dunno, intimate?

ALSO!! I like the fact that she’s kinda warmed up to the mercs! esp. Heavy and Pyro from her voicelines

Putting this last but I’m still overanalyzing this scene. While I think miss Pauling crying was more due to the disappointment of failing the Administrator (and maybe the fear of being tortured?), I think Spy’s words brought up the guilt of her failing the other mercs as well.

In Japan, there’s Buddhist tradition where the temple bell is rung 108 times on New Year’s Eve, with the last one being right as it goes into the new year.

On New Year’s Eve, it’s also a tradition to eat soba, which is supposed to bring long life and prosperity in the year ahead.

初詣 (hatsumoude) is the first shrine visit of the year specifically. Simply translated it as “shrine” due to the short line delivery.

(Sound of the temple bell being rung on New Year’s Ever)

The Maid of Light

Maid - active creating class, one who creates their aspect, or creates using their aspect.

Light - control of light, and luckiness.

The Maid of Light is one who creates Light, or creates using Light.

The opposite of a Maid of Light is a Bard of Void.

This is, hands down, a very very interesting Light classpect. The Maid of Light creates Light, luckiness, and knowledge.

This comes off to me as something that the Maid of Light would always be encouraging learning, and be eager to provide knowledge and sources. They might find themselves being the Light in someone else's lives.

In the beginning, Maids find themselves being a doormat, being unable to express themselves correctly, if at all. Their opinions on matters are simply brushed over when they try and put their two cents into something. And it's infuriating.

When the Maid does come into themselves, though, and they begin to speak up and out, they find themselves having a lot to say.

The Maid of Light is the type of friend to ask you about your interests and then spend hours researching and forming opinions and even dabbling in said media just so that they can ramble right back to you about something you hold near and dear in your heart.

The Maid of Light is full of random, sometimes even useless, information. You can walk up to them and ask them about something completely random and chances are they at least vaguely know what you're talking about.

The Maid of Light is someone who is kind, compassionate, caring, and most of all, generous.

They are always seeking to do better for the world, and they share their light and knowledge with as many people as they can. Whoever will listen, the Maid of Light will infodump to.

They love it best when people listen to them and are actively paying attention.

Something that they won't tell you, though, is that they LOVE it when other people give them the same treatment they give whenever their friends are interested in a particular topic.

Absolute adoration. They love it when someone tries to at least know a little about what the Maid likes. It makes them feel nice.

Secretly, they find themselves minorly annoyed when people don't do this.

ok a proper response to this might be 'mae you like characters that are messy and this is the only reason this bugs you so much' and FAIR. VERY FAIR. but. oh boy does the babyfication of ast_rion make me. argh. oogh. eugh.

not that everyone does it but I keep getting recc'd these character posts that equate 'man dealing with trauma and learning his coping mechanisms are bad' to 'man who is secretly the sweetest kindest guy in the world who never really meant any of the bad stuff he did or mean things he said'

it's just this sort of REMOVAL of his personality and personal agency that just completely flattens the depth of his character and it gets WORSE when people use it to just write off his more unsavory decisions as 'he didnt know any better.' which. augh. aaaaaaaughghhghghhfddgf man who are you even TALKING about. that's a 300+ year old man. how did you miss the point so badly

there's prob an incredibly messy essay to be had here about the concept of the perfect victim and ppls inability to come to terms with Sometimes Someone You Like Is Just Being An Asshole but like. it's 3 am and I am not writing that essay.

but it does make me think abt that text post re: ppl modding ast to have w_lls romance scenes says so much about the state of fandom for Both of them. which is probably a way more succinct way of saying what I'm trying to say but. yeah. it sure as hell does. I'm saying this as someone who likes both of them and goes sicko mode over my ast-romancing t_v like once a week my dude.

Thinking about things being implied in subtext via camera zoom, it was definitely intentional. I've just watched a reaction of s3ep2 when Logan sent those donuts after the sibs got together in Ken's (well Rava's) place. When they talked about the donuts in the car, the camera zoomed in on Tom. Implying he was the one who spilled the secret to Logan. Which makes sense considering the timing (Gerri did threaten Roman but it was immediately after the phone calls that they got the donuts, so), but the zoom in made me convinced. I didn't notice it on my first watch but dissecting succession on rewatch (un)surprisingly makes you discover so many new angles

So, anyways, those shots of Bridget in the background while Tom and Logan were talking about his divorce with Shiv and Shiv turning away after Greg came in after Tom in the wake, that even on my first watch immediately made me go hmmm 🧐, were definitely there for a reason.

See, I know many people say that s4 lack subtlety/subtext. But I feel like mayhaps it just went undiscovered or people are unwilling to take that leap of faith. Especially regarding tomgreg. Like they're just okay with accepting what people around the characters are saying about the disgusting brothers scheme and Greg's being a playboy at face value. Even though we then found out it had not even been happening yet. In fact, Greg actually implied it hadn't happened when he talked about Bridget to Tom in ep 1 using the word "finally", but it's literally just a handjob initiated by Bridget who was high where he wasn't even able to finish.

Like, there're so many things being implied there even with that one scene. (What was Greg doing on those many dates then? Dinner and kissing? And then dump them after? What did he get out of that? Except the reputation. What did the reputation of being a playboy give him despite not actually being a playboy or enjoying it? Safety in an environment where toxic masculinity is highly regarded, and something to bond with Tom) But the implications go in the direction of things that make those people uncomfortable (Greg being gay doing comphet/being into Tom) so they just call people who saw it, who applied their logic like what succession has always demanded from the audience in the previous seasons, delusional. As if we are taking a joke too seriously and going too far.

And I feel like seeing how the fandom works, the zoom in shot of Tom in the donut scene in the car (or other shots like that who are more in line with the Logan/company takeover plan, or the Roy siblings' struggle) would be seen as more worthy of discussion and taken seriously in the general fandom than the Bridget zoom shot or the Shiv at the wake zoom shot or Greg acting comphet, like I just know if these get brought up there they'd just dismiss it as tomgreg being desperate and not the camera director/writers literally guiding the audience's eyes and trying to make us think

Sorry for the rant it's so frustrating how much the general fandom vibe is like "you're seeing things that weren't there" now even though they probably joined and laughed at those 'tomgreg is probably into each other' jokes in the past

OOGH that’s super interesting omg. and yeah when it comes to tomgreg especially, any kind of examination of scenes or talking about shots or possibilities of why certain directions were taken are automatically dismissed as reading too much into it or misogynistic or a reach or not focusing on the “correct” part of the media, which is super sad bc then you miss out on things like thiiis! which you are saying!

when it comes to s4, i have a lot of beef with it but it definitely does have its merits and cinematography is absolutely one of them.
