And you know the ones I mean:

Shido, we can see right up your nose. But let's talk about the text on these. First, the really big bit on the left:

獅童正義 shidou masayoshi

Look at the kanji there. His given name is twice the size of his family name. Plus, his given name doesn't have the furigana (tiny text to tell you how to read it) that you can see against his family name—despite it being easily misread as a common noun.

Because, as eny fule kno, Shido's given name is spelled the same way as 正義 seigi, meaning "justice". This will be important later. The game lampshades this, by the way, in gossip chats around the election:

"Shido-san really lives up to what his name means. He's like justice personified." Okay, gossiping person, you do you.

At the bottom, in tinytext next to his spooky Illuminati-esque Whole World In His Hands logo that isn't megalomaniacal at all, we have the name of his new splinter party:

未来連合 mirai rengou United Future

未来 mirai means future; 連合 rengou means a bloc, a coalition, an alliance or union. 連合ヨーロッパ rengou yooroppa, "a federal Europe"; 連合国 rengoukoku, "the Allied powers". So we get "United Future", perhaps less catchily "The Alliance for the Future", which is very much the sort of name new Japanese political parties tend to have.

This is Shadow Shido's slogan. This sums up his mission, his motive, the whole reason he wants power. And what does it say?

私のために、民衆は尽くす watashi no tame ni, minshuu wa tsukusu The people will serve me.

What a nice thing to say! What an excellent sentiment, befitting of a public servant in a democracy! And what an unashamed piece of shit, eh? You can see why Japan is underwater in his head.

Constructions of the form X no tame ni tsukusu are quite common; my dictionary lists several. So this little phrase is a play on words in at least two ways:

First of all, it's an adaptation of a well-known phrase, 民衆のために尽くす minshuu no tame ni tsukusu, "to serve the people". Shido has taken this and inverted it: the people will serve him.

But second—remember how Shido's given name, Masayoshi, is written the same way as seigi, meaning "justice"? One of those common little example phrases in my dictionary, under tsukusu, is the following:

正義のために尽くす seigi no tame ni tsukusu to work for justice

This is why his given name is in massive letters on the poster: because this play on words is deliberate on his part: Shido is justice, as his name should tell you; he defines what is good and right and true—and what's good and right and true is what is in his interests. And so the people will serve him. The same way they'd serve the nation, or society, or the public good.

It's a really interesting line. And, of course, it calls to mind Akechi—supposedly a detective, in the service of justice, and yet in reality....

BTW, don't forget this is Shido's Shadow talking. How much does Shido himself, the guy walking about upstairs, delude himself about all this? That's an exercise for the reader.

is there anything you're dying to talk about that no one has asked you about yet

Here’s one! Allow me, for a moment, to complain ramble about Spock’s “dyslexia” as canonised in Discovery.

First, let me just say very quickly I LOVE Discovery! What a funky show! It’s great! I can’t want to do a rewatch at some point… everyone go watch it and say hi to Saru (my beloved) for me!

I love Kelpians btw, they are the greatest! So amazing. I need to rewatch the damn show and then yell specifically about them at some point!

But anyways,

Spock’s “Dyslexia”! It does have a different name in canon but allas as a dyslexic person I can’t be bothered to pronounce let alone spell that. The word dyslexia is bad enough already. But the way it works is basically Spock is dyslexic ONLY in Vulcan.

Which, I hope, I don’t have to reiterate, IS REALLY FUCKING STUPID! Like, how would that even work? The entire point of the disability is that your brain works differently and sees the words and letters differently! (I know only very surface level stuff but, you know, it was explained to me why on earth I can not read properly XD)

And like, they even use this alien dyslexia to explain why Spock’s brain didn’t melt when he was shown pictures of the future (plot point, doesn’t really matter for the purposes of this rant). The point is that THEY ALREADY SAY HIS BRAIN WORKS DIFFERENTLY WHICH IS WHY IT DIDN’T MELT! So, why is it language specific?? What is so special about Vulcan that one can have dyslexia only in that one language but be completely fine in every other one? Is this specific to vulcans? Or can a human learn Vulcan and then suddenly realise “oh shit I’m dyslexic in this one very specific language”?

Why give your character (a character mind you, that has been used throughout history of this franchise by so many people to feel seen and represented by) a disability with all the “perks” and none of the… you know…. Disabling aspects? We see him struggle with reading in one (1) flashback scene and that’s it!

And it would be so damn easy as well! Just have Spock in Discovery or SNW casually mention that he is proofreading something to make sure he understands it correctly? Or have him misread a word every once in a while.

This character is already dyslexic, that’s already canon, so just PLEASE extend it to the other languages as well.

And I mean, even if that doesn’t happen, that’s fine, we can imagine. Or, well, we COULD, if Spock’s magical dyslexia didn’t hinder him SPECIFICALLY in the one language we basically never see him use!

I’m rambling, I know, but… it’s just… sad kinda. Just, Paramount, please, give my dyslexic Spock! Please!

It continues on from a very long series of exchanges beginning here and continuing here.

It starts off with interactions on a message board before spewing over into PM discussions.

Also below is well...what I would’ve responded to some of RDMacQ’s comments but chose not to so as to hopefully not drag the interaction out yet longer.

I post these so there partially out of catharsis but also so that there is a clear record of what happened and you need not merely trust my word on the discussion, his word, and indeed can cite it if I do make erroneous claims in reference to it. We can then look at it and discuss.

That’s rich coming from you. I apologized multiple times, you didn’t acknowledge this and instead either deliberately or because you are just that stupid decided to take it that I didn’t apologize and instead said it was actually your fault.

And you demanded I not interact with you in your last PM so who’s making up the rules in their head again?

I misinterpreted but you make it out that I’m schizophrenic.

a)      I also told you afterwards to stop interacting with me and you didn’t

b)      I wasn’t going to stop interacting with you after you told me to stop because you’d lied and slandered. Why on Earth should I allow you to lie and insult me?

c)       It’s rather rich arguing I responded to you with essay after essay when on multiple occasions you yourself responded with essay length posts. Including this one I am responding to now.

d)      You talk about narratives in MY head. YOU are the one claiming I was saying you were the bad guy. I wasn’t. I never ever said that. That’s all inside your own head.

e)      I also never said I wasn’t to blame, hence I apologized waaaaaaaaaay back in a PM literally entitled apology

f)       Putting aside how I owned up to a mistake in the first PM of this exchange, the stuff I was at fault for was the things the mods got on my case for. Which I owned up to. All the other stuff YOU claim I am at fault for is only YOUR assessment. And we’ve established you aren’t that great at seeing the plain and the obvious. Hence you utterly misread that I was apologizing and wasn’t saying I was faultless and you were to blame for everything. I stated  I was at fault and out of line in a big way then outlined where my anger regarding you comes from and elaborated that essentially there had been fault on both our sides, not fault only on yours

“YOU were the one who said I'd never hear from you again. ”

And I kept to that.

You however responded to a comment I didn’t address to you or indeed anyone specifically, which was an innocent question.

Then I responded to you by accident as I’d misread something you wrote as something Lockdown wrote, which I explained and apologized for.

That was a mistake but by that point you’d already interacted with me, you’d already broke what I’d taken to be an agreement of non-interaction.

My consequent interactions with you were to address this as I’d thought we had an agreement but 2 days in a row you’d talked directly to me.

 “And- again- given your track record and how I have absolutely zero trust in you anymore, I'd no reason to believe that you'd stick by that word.”

You know...except for the fact I did.

 “So when you made that post bitching about the multiple threads, it seemed like there was a very good chance that was a veiled shot at me, given how you've operated in the past, digging up old posts or just deciding you're going to be pissed off at something for no good reason. ”

I wasn’t bitching, it was an innocent question. I didn’t swear (which you accuse me of and just did btw). I wasn’t insulting anyone. I was just asking a question.

 My God you talk about a narrative in my head but you are the one seeing an innocent question not directed at you or anyone else as a ‘veiled shot’ at you.

 Also I already explained my ‘past operations’ were due to extreme extenuating circumstances. You are talking like I’ve been doing this for years on end when I haven’t. You are again demonizing and slandering me.

 “And since I was the one who started these threads and keep them going, that it was probably going to lead to another instance of you sending me a private message telling me what an asshole I am or how wrong I am because I have a different point of view than you do, or have somehow done something to "Offend" you, and you decided that somehow THIS time it would have been "Different" and therefore "Justified" to do this in your mind. ”

 This is some conspiracy level stuff. I asked a question. You take this as a veiled shot that going to lead to me attacking you in PMS.

 I never even called you an asshole in any PMs to my recollection and if I did I apologize for that but I honestly don’t remember ever saying anything like that. Saying you were wrong sure, but never personally insulting you the way calling you an asshole would constitute.

 I don’t even know what you are talking about with ‘different’ and ‘justified’. You just sound crazy.

 You are acting like every single time ever I’ve disagreed with you or stood my ground in opposition to your view I’ve harassed you.

 I crossed the line in a big way by digging up one thread and sending you like 3 PMs across a year attacking your points. That was wrong I’ll admit, but you are acting like EVERy instance ever has resulted in something like that and it hasn’t.

 It’s especially nuts in this instance because I just asked a question.

 You are indeed being way too harsh (and utterly unsympathetic); friendly reminder by the way I expressed sympathy for your own issues in our last long PM exchange. You are also being...crazy. I asked. A. Question. That was it. I didn’t criticise. I just asked why we do it one way instead of another. I didn’t respond to your answer. It made sense, it addressed my enquiry. That was it.

 Also none of the things I dug up were from years in the past.

 The only times I ever ‘insulted’ you on the forums were by calling you belligerent; no mod has ever called me on this so you know....either they agree or it’s not an insult in their eyes.

 Not only is this entirely true (remember I’ve explained I wasn’t saying i was guiltless you were actually at fault, you just keep insisting that to be the case), but you yourself have insulted, accused and judged me publicly on the forums. I’ve not been the only person you’ve done that to either.

 Yeah I decided you were the target but I explained and apologized for that in my very first PM in this saga of ours.

 I don’t refuse to consider it, hence I apologized at the very start which you ignorantly keep ignoring. Notice I’ve not called you an asshole once whilst you’ve done it multiple times across all these PMs.

 I kept to that. You broke it. then i broke it by mistake and broke it again out of reflex and anger, which i owned up to.

 I can’t interact with you but you can interact with me.

 I might’ve misinterpreted but my interpretation at least included a mutual understanding. You are just dictating i can’t talk to you but you can talk to me.

Unfortunately I lost the screen shot of my next PM. But it essentially read that I didn’t read his above comment (which is true at first I didn’t my above response is merely something I wrote a while after the fact for catharis) and that I’m spelling out clearly if he’ll agree to just not interacting in the future.

A reminder. This is the guy who takes major umbridge with me swearing. Here he is swearing and insulting me. 

I didn’t say this to him but i have to ask why exactly he gets to dictate the terms of what meeting him half way means when what it seems to mean is I admit I’m wrong, that he’s right and change my allegedly bad ways the way he wants me to. 

Doesn’t seem half way since he’s not owned up to doing anything wrong himself.

You are not a mind reader RD. I was indeed interested in meeting you half way. You burnt that bridge yourself.

I didn’t want you to abide by anything, I wanted us to talk and come to an understanding, some boundaries with one another we could respect.

You weren’t interested and claiming I demanded you abide by everything is hypocritical seeing as you won’t even agree to mutually break off all contact and yourself demand I conform to your prescribed change in behaviour, which involves owning up to negative traits according to YOU. 

You are not a moral arbiter an if you were you wouldn’t be a very good one.

Furthermore you have a humungeous problem seeing the woods for the trees.

You’ve dredged up the idea of meeting half way when I in the above comment made it clear I’m no longer interesting in that. It’s not a topic worth even talking about as it is irrelevent to moving forward.

Nickname: My dad calls me Sares sometimes which is ironic given that my mum hates names being shortened and chose Sarah partly because it was already so short that people would…not do that (which is annoying, because if she didn’t mind names being shortened she might have put my middle name first, and I like Elizabeth SO much better than Sarah). My stepdad calls me Squidgit (pronounced Squidge it, btw, I don’t know when I decided to spell it squid git, but apparently I did and I’ve only just noticed how it could potentially be misread)

2. Zodiac: Gemini

3. Height: idk and I don’t have a tape measure handy. Over five foot though.

4. Last movie I saw: er��� I can’t remember. The last thing I watched on Netflix was two episodes of How To Train Your Dragon: Race to the Edge.  I love that franchise.

5. Last thing I googled: The cinema times for HTTYD 3 this Thursday, my dad also loves it so we’re  going together

6. Favorite Musicians: Handel, Queen, Keane, Murray Gold.

7. Song stuck in my head: Nothing right now, which is unusual. I had Merlin Buries Lancelot stuck in my head for a bit at work earlier though.

12. Amount of sleep: it depends, but if you want me to be anything approaching functional in the morning, I need to have had around 7 or 8. I mean, I’ve survived over twenty four hours without sleep before (there was a thing, involving my house keys, and losing them, it sucked majorly) but sleep is good.

13. Lucky number: I don’t have a lucky number. My favourite is thirty three…

14. What am I wearing: My green skinny jeans with six fully functional pockets, blue t-shirt with a badge from Canterbury Cathedral pinned to it, my purple fluffy dressing gown.

15. Dream job: Realistically, working in a bookshop and getting to do fun things with displays and activities for children because children deserve all the book-related fun they can possibly get. Unrealistically, I’m a published author raking in the millions (or at least enough to live on) popular enough to go do book signings in Europe and/or the US (or, y’know, popular enough to warrant doing book signings somewhere.)

16. Dream trip: My biggest motivation for learning to drive* is so I can go to Pontefract Castle. My dream trip would be going from castle to castle in England and Wales, drinking in the Plantagenet/Tudor feels and basking in history and sunshine.

*I am not, currently, learning to drive, I’ve got enough going on without having to figure out that as well. But I’m going to learn at some point. 

17. Favorite food: I’m not sure, for me food just sort of tends to…be there. Eating is a thing we have to do so I do it, but I don’t really care enough to have a favourite. Unless drinks count, in which case my favourite food is tea.

18. Play any instruments?: I can. I don’t. I’ve had piano lessons and violin lessons, but I haven’t touched a violin in six years, and the only interest I really have in playing the piano is messing around picking songs out by ear for five, ten minuets till I’m bored and go do other things. I do sing, well enough to sing the alto solo for “O thou that tellest good tiding to Zion” and the soprano solo for “The Heavens are Telling”, and a handful of other fun things with my church choir (granted, the rest of the choir were all in their seventies so I was pretty much the only option, but the choirmaster/organist wouldn’t’ve agreed to do the pieces  in the first place if he hadn’t thought I was good enough to pull it off)

19. Favorite song: I don’t have a favourite, as such, there’s lots of different ones I absolutely adore. Father and Son from Guardians of the Galaxy 2 always gives me feels, and is now stuck in my head, so I’ll put that.

20. Random fact about me: I hate phonecalls so much that deciding I was prepared to ring up and ask about buying a drawing was all the proof I needed to know that I really, really, really wanted it.

21. Describe yourself as aesthetic things: The smell of old books. The smell of new books. Daffodils, conkers. Blossom on the trees as spring kicks in and the skies get warmer; walled gardens when the roses are in bloom. Berries in bramble bushes and red and orange leaves crunching underfoot. Excitable Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, grass after rain, ruins, and castles and churches and towns that are so, so old but still standing. That stretch of the River Avon between the  theatres and the Church where Shakespeare’s buried. Nice hot tea, thinly ruled notebooks and ink-stained fingers. “You look so pretty without your glasses!” is a trope that can bite me- my glasses are fine thanks, albeit perpetually smudged.

JG - omg we actually got redemption for isle of skye? i am sooo happy and like privileged that i got the opportunity to talk to you and work with you! you have such a bright and bubbly and happy personality and i really hope we continue talking after this game so i can hear more mcdonalds horror stories and learn more about the exciting things that are coming up in your life! ooh and so i can watch u n raffy mess around in fortnite.

Richie - omg you are actually sooo funny and i’m like mad at myself that i didn’t try to get to know you better. i think i was a bit intimidated by you because i heard from others that you weren’t my biggest fan eek! but the few conversations we did have were my fave. we need to start up that face mask company, me n blake came up w an amazing marketing scheme but we need our model!  my fave nicole gif btw:

Tim - i’m rly bummed that we didn’t work as closely as we did in isle of skye bcos that was so much fun. your final memes that you sent me were so funny and gave me heaps of nostalgia. i hope everything goes well for prom and you n your friends have heaps of fun!!

Blake - i keep reading funny things or spot a hot guy or something n go to message you but realise i can’t. i rly made my life a lot less interesting huh!! becoming friends with you was probably the best experience for me of this game. i really hope that voting you out doesn’t change our relationship and we can still be friends and talk heaps, and watch horror movies, and be mean to people. HAHHAHA. i love you lots!!!

Blake: You are such a great guy and an awesome player! From being the only two from Sima that stuck together at the first tribe swap, to getting back together on Thueban. You were a great ally and I was to have to cut ties.

Tim: Tim! You’re a really great guy and I still really loved the flag you made for the merged tribe challenge all on your phone, especially the beret and mustache :P Have fun at prom when the time comes and hopefully you found a nice tux!

Richie: You played hard right up to the end and I respect that! You played a great game. Keep dropping your Survivor/BBCan/BBUS knowledge and you’re bound to get a job on the spot! I guarantee it!! Haha Remember, you’re a survivor of grad school, no matter how long you were in it

Dani: You played an awesome game but I guess the odds just weren’t on your side in the end. I wish you the best of luck with your goal of getting on Survivor! :) I’m sure you’ll get on it, just got to keep on trying. I can’t wait to see you on my TV screen.

JG: We often kept our chats to game talk and I felt like we had a really good bond and shared a similar mindset in terms of threats and allies. I was sad to see you get voted out and wish we could have played together for longer. Keep on killing it at Overwatch for me and I’ll keep on killing on Mario Kart for you :)

Raffy: Raffy! You were definitely a character from the moment we interacted right until the very end. Causing tribe drama by forfeiting that challenge was something I’ll never forget. Good luck with the rest of high school and keep enjoying those video games.

AnnMarie: Look at you causing drama with a MedEvac! Haha I’m glad to hear that you were okay. Best of luck with school and make sure to take the time to destress once in a while. You honestly won me over when I saw that you chose Michaela as your picture haha

Andreas: I’m sorry to hear about the frustration you had during the early portion of the game. It was nice to connect with another non-american player! Hopefully your job search went well and your fun interview turned out for the best!!!

Elliot: You were so great! I’m glad we shared a lot of same opinions and it was always great to get my frustration out and screaming into the void with you when needed. You were somebody I saw myself aligning with before you got voted out and that tribal really sucked.

Bryan: We never got to chat much sadly simply because we were never on the same tribe, except for the One World twist. You’re obviously a huge presence in these games which is something to be respected. It would have been cool to play alongside you and learn a bit of your skills. Hopefully see you in the next one!

Akito: We never really talked much, and I blame my busy work schedule for that, but I remember suffering through the duolingo challenge with you from beginning to end. Talking about our progress and how much we didn’t want to do it anymore. Sorry for accidentally congratulating you for getting the highest score only to immediately realize I misread the results haha

Eric A: All the way back to the original Sima tribe. I had a great time shit talking about people who spell their name as Erik over the more superior Eric. But I’m sure we weren’t bias or anything haha We never went far together but I enjoyed the time we had early on in the game,

Matt J: I’m sad that I never actually met in the game. As a first time player myself, I was excited to chat with you. I hope your early elimination won’t stop you from playing again in the future!

Becca: It was sad to see you go home first :( I hope you had a good time throughout your time in the game and hopefully we’ll actually cross paths one of these days.

Blake- ohhhhhh my god. i love you so much and everyone knows who already really won this game (you) even without the actual title! can’t believe you were done like that and if you play other survivor games (or real survivor) you’re gonna win! Tim- we didn’t talk much but i really  like how you never gave up even when you had like 0 hope. Richie- we didn’t talk much like at all but you’re obviously vvv smart and was always on the top for challenges. Dani- you really were the queen of surviving tribal council and i fully respect your gameplay and you turned into the threat pretty quick! JG- we’ve had our differences but now i really appreciate and respect you!! so glad we got these chances to talk lol! i’ll be rooting for you your next game lol!

Raffy- it was nice talking to you for the short period we did. sorry it ended so shortly but threats can’t stay threats!!!

Annmarie- idk what to say like you flipped on me and after bryan was out you were basically nonexistent Andreas- so you voted for me and that’s completely cool i feel for your awful timezone situation and how you played even with the struggle!

Elliot- i don’t think we were ever on a tribe together but i heard enough about you from blake to feel like we were tbh Bryan- …… i mean the first time didn’t work but the second time was a charm?? Akito- idk you just really tried to throw me under the bus which is kind of an awful thing to do but look who’s here now taquito Eric A- ya know this was my first attempt at trying something and it didn’t work out agdbd but rip to you i really tried
