Wally playing video games is something that increases my serotonin. It is time to make the ultimate semi crossover of funny, silly puppet man and the serious and (at points) sad Persona 5 Royal because I want to see Wally's reaction to those topics. Especially since he probably doesn't even know like... Half of what is going on.

So I guess spoilers for Persona 5 Royal. The game is explained so poorly in this that people will probably not understand anything (much like Wally), but there are still some spoilers.

Reader Playing Videogames with Wally Darling (mainly Persona 5 Royal, but others are mentioned):

🎮 So, it turns out Wally has a bit of trouble holding controllers. He only has three fingers and a thumb on both hands, as well as felt for skin. Most controllers just fall out of his hands, so he mostly just watches you play.

🎮 Wally CAN play games on a DS, Wii U, or other consoles that can be laid flat and controlled using a screen and stylist. Some of his favorite are any Pokemon games that let you play with the Pokemon (he hates making them fight, so he makes you go out and catch them for him. Also, he'll have you play through the story because of the fighting), Nintendogs (he always names his dogs Barnaby. He has Barnaby, Barnaby 2 and Barnaby 3...), and Super Mario 3D Land.

🎮 Mist of the times, he just watches you play the games. Ever since you got Persona 5 Royal, though, he has been on an emotional rollercoaster. He doesn't understand even HALF of what is happening. Like... WHY ARE PEOPLE BEING SO MEAN? He doesn't know what they are doing, but they know they are being mean because people in the game are reacting with like... Horror once they find out. At least you fix them in the end? And the art is good!

🎮 Your character is also cool! He doesn't understand why people don't like you? What is a "probation"? Wait, you committed a crime?! No, people just think you did? HUH? A politician accused you of it? What's a politician?

🎮 You make a lot of friends, though, and fight the bad guys! Even one of the people you fight becomes a friend! Her name is... Futaba Sakura? Her name sounds cool! Along with all the characters' names! She didn't seem so mean, though, so he doesn't understand why you fought her or why she wanted you to. She kinda reminds Wally of himself in a few ways, to be honest.

🎮 Then the ending and the second ending after that is really cool! When he saw that like... one bad guy you fought that was like... keeping the weird second versions of people in prison? He was kinda like "Woah! He looks so big and scary! Wow! I don't even know what is happening, still! Yippee! 😁" Then there was the guy who was your... uhh... counselor! Yeah, counselor! He seemed more like Futaba in that he didn't seem so bad. He still doesn't understand why making a world where everybody is happy forever is bad. Even if it is fake, everybody is happy! That's how all stories should end! Right? At least that counselor guy had a slightly happy ending, though!

— tooru is the flower giving type!! i think he’s the kind of person to read into flower language and symbolism cuz like, it’s tooru.. he never does anything haphazardly and always wants to provide the best, so he definitely looks into their meanings before choosing accordingly depending on the occasion or mood<3 red roses are a common ( given their symbolism for love and passion ), forget me nots are also some he frequently sends ( often as a reassurance to me, along with himself ), daisies ( he remembers how i used to really like them as a kid, and brings them as a reminder of those times ) and a combo between lily of the valley and larkspur ( they’re the flowers of our birth months<3 )

— i think he would show interest in what i read and i would beg him on my hands and knees to read my favs, specifically the folk of air series, to scream with him!! bonus if he decided to annotate and swap copies with me so we could read each other’s comments<3 furthermore, he serenades me to sleep by reading on stressy nights :’) and just cuz his voice is so<3

— we play a lot of wii and ds games together pre timeskip, specifically super mario bros, mario kart, mario party, wii sports, just dance — all that jazz, and i would have begged him to indulge me in my tekken addiction despite the amount of times he would get his ass handed to him BAHAHAHAHA ( he’s petty bc i use asuka since she counters attacks ) now post timeskip, we would definitely play ssbu because it’s just sm fun ( a-and um um sephiroth…. ) — now i would get my ass handed here instead.. and of course we cannot forget the hit game GENSHIN IMPACT!!! bro mains either tartaglia, ayato or alhaitham because i am not normal about them and he makes it a goal to tease me using them.. think he probably uses vaporize a lot to stick to my synergy or spread; as for couple things, we definitely take each other to pretty locations we found or help one another with grinding / quests. if there are also co-op games, those too!! for the rest, we’d probably take turns on ffvii since it’s single player and i have a tendency to throw a controller at someone when things get too heated.. prepare yourself tooru!! especially if sephi is the final boss..

I’d say it depends on what console/devices you have! Every Zelda game can be played as a stand alone which makes the series pretty easy to approach. If you want to really get the Zelda experience and understand what the core of the Zelda series is about, my only recommendation is start with any game except breath of the wild. BOTW is a great game but it really lets go of the vast majority of Zelda tropes in order to explore and test out new concepts. Which is cool, but not a great start if you’re looking into Zelda as a whole.

The defining Zelda game ever is ocarina of time, so if you have a 3ds I think it’s obligatory for me to say that’s a great starting place. A lot of the classic tunes are from this game, and a toonnnn of the bigger lore pieces come from Ocarina of Time. Song of storms comes from this game too so it’s immediately awesome. if you have a Wii I’d also recommend playing Twilight Princess. It gets a lot of hate I feel like in the community, but it was sort of a soft remake of ocarina of time, and it has objectively the best side kick in all the games. It’s a bit empty but the characters are really full of life. I feel like the dungeons are all really really fun too. I’m honestly really biased with this game because it was my first game though so take that with a grain of salt. On the same topic of Wii/Wii U if you have one absolutely look into playing Wind Waker it has some of the most fun visuals and in my opinion the most compelling ganondorf (main villain) in the whole series. Zelda also has a lot more personality in this game that most.

Back with the 3ds PLEASE consider trying out minish cap. It’s my personal favorite from the 3ds i really love the character designs and the story. I wouldn’t recommend it as a first because it’s a bit more difficult than the ones above and it’s lore is a lot looser, but later on your journey it’s absolutely worth your time it’s so good and cute.

On the 3ds there’s also a link between worlds which I haven’t played personally but has some of my favorite lore and story beats. Definitely worth your time it’s game play is so unique and it’s got some of my favorite characters.

If I list every game I think I’d be here all day so I’m just gonna make a quick list of my recommended order!!

Ocarina of Tome (important lore)

Majoras Mask (this one is a bit difficult so feel free to skip and come back to. It’s a sequel to ocarina of time and has some tif the coolest game mechanics/story ever)

Skyward Sword (more important lore, basically the origin story for all the other games)

if you have a wii/wii u: Twilight princess and Wind Waker (two dramatic ends of what a Zelda game could be visually and story wise. Twilight Princess came out a little after wind waker. TP was super edgy and cool while WW was bright and fun. Both have some really heartfelt moments though and are sooo worth your time)

if you played WW, I feel like spirit tracks would be a fun follow up. It’s an indirect sequel with a similar art style made for the 3ds. The game play is really cool and it has one of the most developed Zelda’s, next to wind waker and ocarina of time Zelda’s)

at this point you should be well versed enough to approach basically any Zelda game! My favorites not already listed are Links Awakening, Minish Cap (MINISH CAP IS SO GOOD PLEASE OELASE PLEASE)and the oracle games!! A lot of people like four swords and tri heroes though!

take all this with a grain of salt though haha!! Zelda can be enjoyed in absolutely any way which is a lot of the appeal. I know it looks like a lot, but really playing any game at all, botw included, means you’re welcome! All you ever really need to know to be a Zelda fan is that the player character is Link and he wears green and he saves a cool princess named Zelda with the power of magic golden triangles!! unless you’re playing the upcoming game Echoes of Wisdom which is coming out in September!!!!! That one’s gonna be about Zelda where you save Link with the power of chairs im so excited

first of all: thank you for indulging me!!

second of all: obligatory LISTEN/READ MASHUP WEEK: MEGAMIX!! ill probably make a separate propaganda post anyway but plsss. mashup tournament that scott won three years ago that he now has to host and interview every1 and i like how he’s written better than most collabs (where hes not just. himself obviously.) write him. host says the tournament is a lot more like wii sports resort now and doesnt elaborate.

third of all: ooooooooookay so. This really got away from me im gonna put the rest under a readmore.

i’m gonna refer to them w/ they/them just for simplicity, but let the record show i don’t think they care that much either way/i switch up pronouns whenever i talk abt stw AHDHDJ (my main hc for a while was no pronouns scott just bc of how the descriptions are written hahahahahaha get itttttttttt)

i’ve Alwaysssss thought scott (the character obvi. do i have to keep clarifying that here too, im always gonna be referring to the character in this postSHDJDJ) was trans ever. since i joined the fandom in late 2021. Partly because borderline forever reminds me a lot of how i realized i was nonbinary (realizing somethings wrong and then course correcting by just… doing the opposite and wondering why that couldnt possibly be the solution.) but mostly because borderline forever is just Like That. . But more on that later

OUTSIDE OF THAT so much of how they act is sosososo deeply trans to me, or at the very least very egg-like and in denial deeply. THE THING that got me deep into stw initially was gifts of gaming because what the fuck man. scott’s very public breakdown because they feel extremely alienated from their peers and that this isn’t an isolated incident!!!!!! (finding other people unrelatable that is (and that’s probably also an autism and/or aroace thing but it can be all of those at once. Smile.) like so often is scott self deprecating abt how nobody cares abt them or their interests or how desperate they are for attention. dude.)

and like. okay so i made an entire nonbinary dysphoria comp already but there are so many. weird throwaway jokes. that aren’t… you know directly about them being trans/dysphoric but about how they hate facial hair or their voice or hated that they couldn’t have ‘girl toys’ growing up or that they shower fully clothed or that they’ll just. roleplay as a girl.

(and i was gonna have a whole bit about… i think you could make some kind of point about how scott ‘roleplays’ as a girl in specifically romantic/flirting contexts (tinder + speed dating) and how that could play jnto their dysphoria, but i also do just think they’re aroace. but there’s something there)

and no matter the intention of the jokes they’re still like. canon. (and i was gonna do a whole thing abt how scott the woz (the show) treats continuity basically being that. jokes + ‘throwaway lines’ establish canon things because they keep being brought back, and that lore is (with few exceptions) consistent. it’s fun. and meaning that these things are (assumedly) things scott thinks/does/how they act even off screen.)

and also i guess if im gonna talk abt trans scott i could At Least dedicate an entire paragraph to borderline forever because holy shit man. Before i rewatched a bunch of episodes this year, i of course had it in my head that borderline forever was totally trans coded but i sorta reasoned that that was my own headcanon clouding my perception and that it wouldnt be that blatant (<in quotes because im sure The Man Himself didnt intend for it to be read this way, but its fun to interpret it as such) but no it really is.

what do u mean theres been an unseen force in your life that’s always been there but you hadn’t noticed until you experienced internalized transphobia talked about something tangentially related, that’s now preventing you from living your life and doing the things you want to do. That isn’t directly harming you, and that other people can’t notice so they dismiss you. What do u mean.

Closing in is literally a song about how they can’t believe they’ve been living their life like this and how they feel like they’re suffocating from the idea of continuing to live like this. They saw the border glow. If you will (sorry.)

The ending of borderline forever is pretty… its… well i guess for me to really have definitive thoughts on it i would have to decide on what i think the allegory is because scott taking the border back serves different purposes for different ones, good and bad. In terms of the trans allegory, I initially considered that it was like him. Accepting transness as part of themselves and learning to live with it and move on from that (effectively transitioning just not. Outwardly (?)). Until my boyfriend (forced to watch every scott the woz lore episode for (for the most part) the first time with me) pointed out n. No it kinda just seems like they can’t imagine themselves as any different/better and thinks This Is As Good As It Gets so they retreat back to their status quo. And like. Huh. Yeah. 100% it’s still affecting them negatively and they hate it but they’re ignoring it now they saved the world and they never have to succumb to the horror of being understood and perceived i mean no one else has to worry abt this ever again.

like… two years ago i wrote a fic about nonbinary scott called Abiura Di Me (it’s never getting finished, i was originally gonna do a little comic to end things off but it felt kind of ehh. the only way i’m finishing it is if i completely start over. which who knows.) and, despite not rlly having this interpretation at the time, i did want to kind of explore scott like that, thinking they’re ‘content’ with their life now and wondering why they still feel unhappy/unfulfilled.

In general scott feels like a character that’s so… rigid and strict with their identity/attributes of themselves in a way that, often, makes them miserable, or at the very least in a way that they’re self deprecating abt like i said b4. (i.e. their virginity, and how it oscillates something they take pride in vs. something that they’re ashamed of (b4 accepting it in barrel blast)(youtuber slash tumblr user prim m, in description of their barrel blast mashup did a rlly interesting lil. few sentences of analysis abt this in particular!!), but is, to them at least, a key part of who they are that they have to keep asserting + how they talk abt themselves liking video games and how, similarly it oscillates between smthn that brings them a lot of joy and again, smthn that they’re ashamed of thats another reason they feel isolated, but is nonetheless. Probably THE defining thing about scott.)

And while this^ feels like a general internalized transphobia thing, it’s probably THE reason i think they’re nonbinary specifically, although i fuck with transfem scott severely. I really like the idea of scott unburdening themselves from any kind of labels and kinda just being happy Existing, it’s essentially what they already want/think they already have just with less expectation put upon them to perform. You could say. Preventing themselves from being put into a box or. Or yknow… some kind of blue borde-[i am killed.]

But anyway to answer your question trans scott is my lifeblood i love them a lot. I like… half joke their egg has been fully cracked now bc of the bits they’re pulling now (mainly. Changing their name in same name, different game and. all of gamer products.) (and side note even though i can glean Transness from any1 of these jokes and that… in a lot of cases scott Is the butt of the joke in them they don’t rlly feel meanspirited most of the time. whether thats bc im in denial ro theres smthn to it thats any1s guess. Tee hee.) i think they’re figuring stuff out and how they want to be perceived and if this is really something they want for themselves (is, but going abt it weirdly/making a joke of it and not taking it seriously (again, goes w the whole self deprecating rigid identity thing!!)

I don’t think scott changes much upon transitioning. Even though i think in the stw universe hrt/gender affirming surgery does… pretty much whatever you want it to and none of what you don’t want (i’m going off the… one ama where he said smthn along the lines of the stw universe is a perfect bubble where nothing bad happens + being able to get treated for murder + how i think scott the real person would think that kinda stuff works AHDNDIJDDJ and also cus i think its funny) i dont think scott would Want to change much physically. But i really like the idea of them keeping dyed blue bits framing their face (get it.) + slightly longer hair. and boobs cause i think thats awesome. personality wise they’re exactly the same and still suck though. for context, I did have a lot of consoles throughout my life bc as I've said video games pretty much are my life but they were:

Mega Drive 3 or whatever its called yknow one of those TecToy things that comes with games already in it - older cousin didn't want it anymore

Polystation (famiclone) - 1980's console sold in the 2000's yeah this was probably like 10 dollars. we gave it away eventually. my parents barely remember that we had this but if there's something I don't forget it's video games

PlayStation 2 Slim - cheapest version of the PS2 you could get at the time when the PS3 was already out. I think my parents divided the cost with someone else in the family. we pirated all our games.

black Nintendo DSi - my mom asked a friend of hers who was visiting the US to get it there cheaper and she'd pay it back. I was disappointed to find that every other kid on the planet had a DSi XL instead which deeply insulted me because 90% of them stopped playing with the thing as soon as it wasn't cool anymore and my hands grew to be larger than average so I kind of needed that. normal white Nintendo Wii - I don't remember how many years after the console's release this was but it was a standard Wii. my uncle who doesn't live here happened to have bought this in fucking Syngapore and gave it to us. yes that means it used PAL games. in a region that only sold NTSC games. we pirated all our games except for the Wii Sports and Wii Play discs that came with the console and the second controller respectively

normal 8GB storage release year Wii U (as opposed to the 32GB black one that actually came with a game already) - my parents divided the cost with another family member and bought it for me on the christmas of the year that thing released because I really really really begged them so I could play Smash 4. I didn't know how to mod a Wii U, so this was my first console with original games. I had to wait a month or two after I got it to actually have something to play though, since they couldn't afford it. I don't regret wanting a Wii U, all things considered

release year Nintendo Switch with the red and blue joycons - I got this used from a colleague in late 2022 (nearly 6 years after it came out) because of how expensive this shit is. the joycons were brand new due to stick drift replacements. I got a few games since then and found out that I actually don't like this thing at all it feels so bad to play in any form possible and every game is like 300 bucks

besides that I would play stuff on old used laptops or whatever we could get emulators running on. always keep gaming and buy a ps vita for me if you can

Okay so hear me out -

This takes place at dreams face reveal.

You are good friends with almost everyone on the dream smp and you are faceless like dream, techno, corpse and you have almost the same about amount of subs like dream so when you and dream hit 30mil , Dream decided to do face reveal to your friends group, let's just say that the most hype was on Dream and that was good you didn't said anything about you doing face reveal too you didn't plan on making it but you know dream inspired us doing is.

Little back story :Dream and I were childhood friend like him and sapnap but you showed up a year or two before sapnap so you both knew it's other, you started your channel the same time like Dream did but you don't really play or stream Minecraft you play mostly plate up! Horror games and small films like 50 something minutes (okay I admit this isn't small films but yeah ¯\_(ツ)_/¯) and Wii, I have like a decent schedule and it is stable like two times a week or three and the fanbase is happy. 1. so my RE pipeline was kinda wild. In 2020ish I watched my sibling play through RE4 on our wii, but didn't have any strong feelings, like nothing stuck with me. I literally forgot Luis existed, I had zero memory of what he was like in that game. Then last year they showed me this fantastic youtube video and I was hella interested in Leon/Luis so they replayed RE4R (they're insanely good and had already beaten it several times) and I became OBSESSED with Luis and Leon and RE generally. After RE4R they binged and replayed (with me watching ofc) some of REmake, RE2R, RE7, and Village. The games I've actually played myself are RE1 but only the DS port, Revelations, RE4R, both Chronicles games, and this obscure beauty that is incredibly noncanon but actually very dear to me:

This is insane of me, but honestly I fucking love Darkside Chronicles so much that I almost want to say it's my favorite, but I won't go that far and just say that RE4R is my favorite with an honorable mention to Darkside. 

2. My first real exposure to him was from that youtube video so like

yeah I was hooked immediately and then got deeper and deeper into RE lore and loved him even more 

3. Of course I love Winterserra. I just love that they're both what they need, that they save each other; Ethan needs saved from his infection/the corrupt part of the BSAA, Luis needs a malewife someone to save him from himself and his guilt, making him feel like he deserves to live and pulling him out of his depression. 

I'm also going to gush about a nonromantic pairing that I really love: Luis and Alfred Ashford.

It all goes back to Darkside Chronicles:

My brain worms honed in on "traitors to Umbrella" and went "ah yes so Luis Serra would have been in Rockfort if he'd tried to sabotage the Nemesis Project instead of quietly disappearing to Valdelobos. Interesting." That spawned a whole AU where Luis avoids execution by being charming as hell. Seeing as Alexia Ashford was a child prodigy, Alfred is 👀 when he finds out that a prisoner he received is also a child prodigy (I imagine Luis being the first and last child prodigy to end up in Rockfort, most would just be too brainwashed and manipulated to want to break away. I mean I guess technically Wesker and Birkin were child prodigies who broke away but Luis would still be the only one that ended up in Rockfort) and has Luis moved and treated better than other prisoners. Luis learns to roll with Alfred and stay on his good side, eventually managing to con him into believing that a) he did not betray Umbrella at all but got framed by his coworkers and b) an elaborate bullshit story about Luis actually being nobility.

... which Alfred REALLY likes and he gets to be the first non Ashford to enter the private residence, where he's supposed to be Alfred's companion until Alexia wakes up. I'm going to cut this ramble off here but being Alfred's BFF is actually hell on earth tbh (Alfred is genuinely very fond of Luis and tries to treat him well, but the problem is that Alfred Ashford is a mentally unstable absolute WEIRDO that has no idea what normal people enjoy and their basic needs so like. Yeah. It's better than being physically tortured/executed/a guinea pig, but still a very bad time!) but Luis hangs in there and eventually escapes back to Valdelobos, but as a very different person, a very bitter one who would really, really not want to help Leon and Ashley… but still would eventually.

My last Luis rare pair is Luis/Annette but there's not much to elaborate on really. Annette likes fucking him because she's trapped in a loveless marriage and William hasn't had sex with her in years and Luis is young and pretty, and a lot better in bed than William. Luis likes fucking her because he feels like a monster for his work and misses Leon (this is an AU where they knew each other as teenagers) and sneaking around with a blonde reminds him of sneaking around with Leon back in the day. There's nothing emotional, just two people using sex as a coping mechanism to distract themselves from how deeply unhappy they are. (i kinda lied it does get a bit more interesting with Annette entrusting Sherry to him when Everything Went Wrong, but up to that point the "relationship" is 100% physical, only sex, no feelings.)

Back with another "completed" old game:

This is one of two notoriously bad games within the same attempt to reimagine Sonic. Shattered Crystal being the 3DS version, not the much more heavily mocked Wii U version Rise of Lyric. RoL is incredibly glitchy, tanks in framerate, pissed off the Sonic fan base with the redesign, etc. Shattered Crystal kinda flew under the radar, aside from mostly being mentioned as a companion thing that unlocked stuff in RoL. There is also apparently a sequel(?) on 3DS that came out 2 years later (Sonic Boom: Fire & Ice), which is... brave.

Personal history/experiences, a rundown of my thoughts about SC and why I put completed in quotations under the cut

First off, I am not a Sonic fan. Never have been, and I've tried pretty much all the recommended games. I bought Sonic Mania on release, I played the first two games on multiple occasions, I have played the Sonic Adventure games through at least twice, as well as having Sonic Heroes and Sonic'06 under my belt. I have seen most facettes of the core Sonic experience and it's just not my cup of tea. I understand what people like and I'm glad they find things to enjoy. This is mostly so my position is more understandable I guess.

Now, for my time with Shattered Crystal:

It's a level based adventure platformer/collectathon, with the main gimmick that you can switch between 4 characters (Sonic, Tails, Knuckles and... Sticks) at any time. Each of them has unique traits that mostly aid exploration. Sonic has a dash that can open new path ways, Tails can ride on air streams, Knuckles can burrow and Sticks can throw a boomerang that can it switches. Each of the characters can also fight enemies. Sonic and Sticks with their ability, Knuckles and Tails with an additional attack. Tails can also glide, as well as play a tiny U-Boat minigame for collectables.

There are up to five goals of interest per level. The ones that always appear are having completed a level, having beaten it under a certain amount of time and finishing with a minimum amount of rings. Most levels also add the two big collectables: Blueprints and Crystal Shards. The former unlocks new abilities (like seeing collectables on your mini map) and the latter is a story McGuffin. Finishing a level, finding all blueprints and crystal shards each give you one emblem, which lets you unlock other levels. Speed and ring goals only giving you tokens to redeem for a pretty rubbish gacha system.

Sadly, to actually finish the game, you need 30/34 emblems. Which means you need to find most blueprints and crystal shards anyways. I was already going to do that (because I'm that kind of player), but it didn't feel great having to repeat a level I didn't want to play again at that time.

The game has a few different types of levels: The most common are exploration based levels, temple run type levels and racing levels.

Going from least interesting to most:

Racing levels are most like traditional Sonic levels, where you try to reach the goal as fast as possible. You race against another character which is effectively the minimum time to beat. When you're head to head, you generally overtake them as they move slightly slower than you, which is good design imo.

Temple Run levels are pretty simple. You automatically run along a track, this time into the screen instead of left to right. You have to dodge obstacles, collect coins and break some things with your boost. I found those very chill for the most part. The lack of major collectibles, the simplicity of the levels and self selecting the level of difficulty was a good change of pace. The levels would only be challenging when you tried to go as fast as possible by constantly boosting wheny you can. So when you just want to collect all the rings, that's easy enough to do. Unless sometimes. The game sometimes has a problem with understanding when you want to switch tracks. You cannot change while boosting, but you also have a short window after boosting where that is the case as well. Which means, if you are a real maverick trying to boost until the very last opportunity and then change lane like the sick skate boarder you always wanted to be, you can die from mushy controls. I have tested those levels with 2 3DS', that is not a hardware problem. All in all, they are quite nice though.

Exploration levels make up the bulk of the content. They are mostly small branching levels, where you move between two compact environments. They are interspersed with enemies, major collectables and Sonic Level Parts™, i.e. the times where you it a booster and see your character zoom off to the other side of the level without you able to intervene. These are fine, the branching noticably drops off toward the later levels and the abilities aren't always integrated well. That is mostly true for Sticks, who just feels rough to play. I generally played those levels with Tails as much as possible, since his glide could get me out of a jam most of the time. Sonic's unique dash was helpful a few times, but too clunky for me to actually use him a lot. Knuckles was there too :)

I think, all in all, Shattered Crystal was a decent game. It's definitely not enough interesting content for the original price and it feels rushed towards the end. The high bar of completion to even access the last level feels like them trying to make it last longer than it normally would and there is a general tendency to padding going through the entire game. That being said, I do like the idea of a smaller adventure title. I think this would've been a good foundation for a more retro style level based platformer. Maybe with a metroidvania twist, as the different abilities kinda were (but without the progression). If I view it as the low budget, lower end development title that it is, it's okay and I enjoyed it in places more than I thought I would. Viewing it as a title of the Sonic franchise, however, makes it understandable why most people didn't like it. There is little emphasis on speed, the exploration levels are really unsuited for fast play with their branching and if you aren't a speedrunner who has practiced the levels a ton, you likely need 3 or more goes on any given level to fully complete it.

Which is a good segue to my use of "completed". I found all Crystal Shards, all Blueprints and finished all stages, getting tokens for ring amount in most of them. I did not really finish any speed challenges, which means that I'm missing a lot of the gacha items. That means I'm currently at 87% completion. That's where it's gonna stay, as I'm really not interested in getting it to 100% through the speed challenges. Luckily, it seems that the missing percentage is counted through gacha, not through level completion. There is a mechanic where you can get a token a day for next to no effort. The problem is that you can't just reset your date, so I would have to check in daily for a month to lazily 100% it. I don't think there will be anything special to get by getting it there, so that's fine.

I am a HUGE Zelda fanatic. In fact, it's one of those special interests of mine that has never left me since childhood. The same goes for Monster High and Mario related things, but Zelda is on top. Horses are also a part of my special interests.

I have two horses. Two horses (3 years old and 18 years old). They are my whole life and world. I love them too much to let them go.

Another thing I'm really into is The Legend of Zelda (also Linked Universe). Yes, I was one of those fans whose first game was Breath of the Wild, but that led me to trying past games, and now I've grown to love most of the Zelda games that have come out. (My favorite Legend of Zelda game is A Link to the Past.) I've also gotten into Linked Universe, and my favorite character has got to be Legend. (It's no surprise that my favorite LoZ game is A Link to the Past.)

My thoughts on Pikmin

I think after a while of replaying these games and getting to know them, I feel like I can that this is a really fun and unique series, but it isn’t necessarily a perfect series and has its large amount of flaws.

This is a series I hold very close and dear to my heart as it has so many unique environments, characters, creatures, and ideas that its crazy this is from Nintendo of all people. It can genuinely be so fun just talking about the series with friends and such just discussing the weird characters and enemies and how all the games play.

Even though I love this series and how its been able to get a second chance with 4, I do think the series is flawed, but thats not really me trying to say its a bad series (if it was this thread would be completely different,)) I’m just saying this as to really love a certain thing, you have to at some point acknowledge the flaws and issues present throughout the whole experience.

In general I think each game has its series of flaws that while annoying or strange, kind of add to the whole game and its experience for me.

Pikmin 1 is generally fun, but short and somewhat janky and sluggish game to really go back to after playing games like 3 & 4. The general gameplay of needing to have a Pikmin be right by you to throw consistently is inherently somewhat annoying, and having to constantly babysit them to make sure they don’t fall off a bridge or do something you don’t want them to do is very obviously a little irritable. Some of these issues were made somewhat worse in the Wii version with the screwy SFX and that infamous crushing glitch, but seem to have been alleviated to an extent in the Switch ports. All that aside though the game still is fun and short, and it makes for a really good afternoon type game to play when you have nothing to do.

Pikmin 2 is a good improvement over 1 in a lot of areas, particularly with the gameplay and Pikmin AI being slightly improved for things like bridges or throwing, and in general I feel like its a much stronger looking game in terms of visuals compared to Pikmin 1 (few more years of development does that for a series.)) But the general gameplay of the caves can get a little repetitive after how much time you have to dedicate spending in them compared to the overworlds in the game. I do find caves fun despite that! There are aspects that are cool and I do like with how it feels like entering a creature’s den or a really strange and dreamlike areas with the toybox or metallic floors. But the amount of time you have to spend in them is what kills it for me, it can be a bit tiring having to do multiple back to back. I should also mention the difficulty is really not well maintained for things like Purple Pikmin, Bitter Sprays, and numerous other little things that kind of play into it. I still like the game regardless though, and I think how unreasonably mean the game is to you is kind of funny to an extent, and honestly it kind of adds to everything lol.

Pikmin 3 is a really nice step into the HD era for this series, as it works really well for these games and I really think 3 and 4 especially benefit for that realism and cartoonish look for the environments and enemies. Gameplay has taken a real good step up with the throwing feeling much nicer and AI just feeling a little more reliable (although I’ve still had numerous stupid Pikmin moments in 3 so I guess it just runs in the series lol.)) The new captains are also pretty fun and unique, I feel like a lot of people do gloss over them which is fair since it doesn’t really feel like the game really highlights too many aspects about them (and it sucked that the Piklopedia wasn’t originally present in 3 for Wii U, really a shame since that couldn’t really highlight their character as much as DX did.)) Also I just feel the game is pretty fun to play, I like just booting it up and messing around. The juice system is a little bit too lenient for what it wanted to do for the day system in Pikmin 1. The idea is really cool as its basically a time extender based on how well you can play on obtain fruit, but its an incredibly forgiving system as you can very easily grind out fruit and juice, and by basically all my playthroughs I’ve had 30+ juice rations, so its a little bit half baked honestly. Enemies have also taken a bit of a hit in terms of player leniency, as they feel way more frail compared to Pikmin 1 or even 2. Makes new enemies feel a bit underwhelming with how easily Pikmin can rip through their health and how the combat is significantly easier. The bosses are also pretty cool too! I think trying out the more traditional boss fight as opposed to what previous games did is a unique idea, but I feel like they reaaaallly tried to draw them out a bit much, as bosses in 3 have caps to how much damage you can do to them at a time, which can be more annoying than anything since bosses are unfortunately also much more frail and can sort of feel like trying to make them feel “tough” or “imposing” when in reality it just makes me want to finish them since time still progresses when they’re just standing around and winding up for an attack. Even if a lot of aspects of this game can feel a bit too scaled back or oddly designed, I still think its a quality experience, and it really is just a delight to walk through and play.

Pikmin 4 is just bizarre to even think about since it felt like a mystery for the longest time, but it’s finally here! The game is honestly just so fun to cruise around in and fiddle around with since the Piklodpedia from 2 finally returns in its original form, but the game is much more lenient with just doing things in your own order rather than being a much more linear adventure compared to 3. It also has Oatchi (bless his heart)) which is a really cool extension of the Pikmin franchise as instead of just adding another captain (which if thats what they did for 4 then I would’ve been a little let down honestly)) they added a character who can jump and act like an independent Pikmin. Honestly a really fun idea and it’s cool just multitasking and getting stuff done with Oatchi that would normally need the help of the Pikmin. Plus the little intervals with Dandori Battles and Challenges are fun as they’re just a cute little distraction from doing the usual cave and above ground exploration like in 2 or 3. 4 is also just one of the biggest games of the bunch, which is cool since its nice having a game to sink your teeth into after the wait from 3 to 4. The environments are super pretty and stunning for the Switch, the enemies are pretty cool, and overall a lot of aspects of this game are just really cool, but it obviously isn’t perfect (unfortunately 😔.)) Oatchi, while being a really good addition, can really be a bit much in terms of the whole combat stuff of 4. Oatchi can really make fights and such much easier with how stupidly strong he gets by the end of the game, which is unfortunate with how this seemingly was made a bit worse from 3 since enemies can still prove to be somewhat frail. I don’t really feel like I have to dwell on the auto-lock aiming as it’s been an incredibly odd choice to make for this game. I think the game really could’ve benefited from just not including this or having it as an option, but it really feels like it sort of bogged down an otherwise great game for a lot of people. I still got around it and really didn’t mind it too much, but it’s still somewhat disappointing that this is a mandatory thing and not optional. Caves are actually pretty neat as the forgo the random generation aspects in favor for the more naturally designed areas which I think was a cool choice, I do think they could’ve stretched the concepts of them further as I do think aspects were lost in translation from 2-4, but I still think they did a decent job with caves being absent for 20 odd years. Overall, 4 is a really cool but somewhat flawed game, and I really like it for that despite these issues.

To really answer why I made this thread, it was to really get a lot of thoughts about these games out of my head.

This series is not perfect by any means, and sometimes I think these flaws can be really apparent and make the experience feel a bit too much at times or like they tried too hard to do this thing in comparison to that thing. But I don’t think that deters me from not liking this series as much as I do.

This is a genuinely great series and I think each game is really deserving of a playthrough despite how different and somewhat estranged each one can be from one another. I’m just glad that this series has gotten a second chance after how it basically was just in limbo for a long while. I made this as a thread to essentially show that you can still love something even if it has a large amount of issues in each entry, and it can be ok to like something flawed.

I hope you enjoyed this read, this wasn’t meant to be some critical look at the games, but more of a fun look back at what I think about them now.

What Fire Emblem Fates Loses Without Online Functionality

As many know by now, Nintendo announced that they will be shutting down the online functionality for the Wii U and 3DS in April 2024. Among these affect will be the Fire Emblem games for the 3DS, all of which I love dearly.

So out of curiosity about what we are going to be losing, I decided to turn off my 3DS's internet and see how Awakening, Fates, and Echoes: Shadows of Valentia reacted. As it turns out, the My Castle feature in Fates was heavily designed with online in mind. Without online, out of battle prep is going to be harder for the average player, and worryingly so.

The first thing is rather obvious: players will lose the ability to visit any other castles (outside of potentially via Streetpass, but I have no easy way to test that). This of course means no more buying player skills for your units (including the fun yet illegal ones like Aptitude) from quick castle battles. You will also lose the ability to recruit any other players' units or form Bond Units between those you visit and visit you frequently. While sad, I would say these features are mostly not needed for Fates' overall gameplay loop.

However, quick castle visits are also used to obtain other resources like ore and food, as players randomly start with different ones. Ore can be traded in at the Smithy for other ore types (at the steep price of 5 for 1). Since ore is needed to forge weapons, you will need to grind for the required amounts. As for food, you're going to have to hope that someone in your army finds some to give to you while wandering the castle. If you have at least one of any ore or food, you can use it at the Arena in an attempt to gain more of it.

Very unlikely players will have 99 of each item in post-online files without the long grind (or hacking).

Players will also lose access to the other paths' shops and vendors from other castles. Unless you're playing Revelation, you will be forced to primarily stick to weapons of the country you've sided with at Chapter 6. This includes weapons like the Dual Kanata that flips the weapon triangle or the Armorslayer that is effective against armored units. Players with the Museum Melee DLC will be able to farm for out-of-path weapons, but it will be a luck-based grind.

Quick castle visits are a great source of Dragon Vein Points, or DVP, as well. DVP is used to build and upgrade facilities around My Castle. Outside of castle visits, you can still obtain DVP through chapter battles, skirmishes, invasions, DLC battles... This is actually a major blow to Conquest in particular because, unless the player has previously downloaded DLC before the shop went offline, they might have no infinite source of DVP! This also makes thing like support grinding difficult, especially if you want second generation units. Birthright and Revelation will still have the infinite skirmishes at the very least, but it will certainly take longer.

Unfortunately for Fates, losing access to online features might end up harming the game's Streetpass functions as well. I hope I am wrong about this, but it appears that you can only update your castle if you are connected to the internet. In other words, once the 3DS online is taken down, you might not be able to update your Streetpass castle, and any future new players might not be able to send out a Streetpass castle at all!

Losing online also comes at the cost of losing your Visitor Points (VP) and Battle Points (BP). Along with showing off how popular your castle is, VP and BP are used to unlock rewards. Many of these rewards are harder to obtained weapons and permanent stat boosters. Without being able to update your points, any future files you start will not be able to access and use these rewards.

Visiting other castles has always be fun!

In short, while none of the online features are absolutely necessary to complete any path in Fates, it does hamper one's abilities to obtain many valuable resources. Forging will be much harder, building up My Castle will take much longer, and it will be trickier to build supports. Conquest players in particular will have to care much more about resource management in general (unless they have DLC).

But what about Awakening and Echoes: Shadows of Valentia? Do they lose anything?

I checked these two as well, and fortunately for them, losing online is basically a non-issue! (Unless you want the DLC, in which case you are already out of luck.)

Unlike Fates, both Awakening and SoV can continue to update their Streetpass (even though it's just a player card for the latter). In fact, as far as I can tell, all SoV really loses is the ability to see how the player ranks in the Global Rankings, which is inconsequential for the gameplay.

I've seen some people bring up the possibility of losing Spotpass in Awakening, which contains bonus content like extra paralogue chapters, bonus units, and unique, harder to obtain weapons. As it turns out, as long as you have previously downloaded Spotpass at least once before, all content related to it will continue to be available for all current and future playthroughs! So only future new players will be losing out on it once the online functionality is gone.

Will Fates still be playable overall?

Oh, absolutely! Just because players will lose many of the wonderful features My Castle has to offer doesn't mean it's all gone. You should still get enough weapons and resources to reach the end of the game regardless of the path chosen. I suspect several players have already done so, either for not caring about My Castle or just not having their 3DS connected to the internet in the first place.

My hope is that Intelligent Systems will put out an update to alleviate the loss of online functionality. Perhaps it could be a resource pack, containing 10 of each ore and food and some weapons. Sadly, I believe this to be very unlikely, especially this late in the 3DS's life...

While more a replacement, a port or remake of Fates would be nice as well! It could contain the three paths (à la Three Houses) along with all of the DLC (including the two festival maps that never left Japan). I for one would absolutely be down for it, as Fates is unironically one of my favorite games.

In the end, this is all merely speculation on my part. We won't know for certain how much will truly be lost until the day Nintendo shuts down the 3DS and Wii U online services for good.

TLDR; Fates will likely lose easy access to obtaining resources and weapons once the Nintendo shuts down the online service for 3DS and Wii U, primarily related to My Castle. Overall this will make items much harder to obtain or, in a few cases, outright unobtainable. The game will still be completely playable however, just a bit harder.

Something I never quite understood is what it is with people and Daisy from the Mario games. Why is there always so much talk about wanting her in the games and hype when she actually is? What exactly is so special about her that gets people like this? I don't think this is a bad thing or anything like that, It is just something that confuses me.

Are you a fan of Dragon Ball? If so, you've surely noticed that the power creep has rendered a majority of the cast irrelevant, with Goku and Vegeta being tantamount to the only ones that really matter in most scenarios, with characters like Yamcha literally not being allowed to participate in fate-deciding battles anymore

You may also have noticed that Dragon Ball Super has more recently been trying to remedy this. Super Hero hardly had Goku or Vegeta in it at all, focusing on how to bring Gohan and Piccolo up to speed, while there was a mini-arc in the manga tying into Super Hero establishing Goten and Trunks as more relevant characters

Fans love that. They love seeing characters who either exist entirely on or who have been pushed to the fringe being brought to the centerstage. There are all kinds of reasons for this, but in the case of Dragon Ball, I think it's a matter of variety vs. stagnation. "Looks like Goku got another power-up that'll serve to elevate him above the rest of the cast and render them useless again"

Daisy is in a pretty similar boat. She's appeared in dozens of Mario titles, but how many of them are the Kart, Party or Sports titles? How many times has Daisy appeared in an actual Mario game?

Daisy first appeared in Super Mario Land for the GameBoy, a spinoff not even made by Shigeru Miyamoto, and even there she was the damsel in distress who didn't actually appear until the end of the game. A very common event for video game characters, especially at the time, but the point is that her involvement in the main Mario franchise is as minimal as it gets

Since then, though, her appearances in the non-platformers have given her a lot of opportunity to flesh out her personality, most notably with how energetic and tomboyish she is in Mario Strikers compared to the more bubbly and girlish Peach

With their differences highlighted, it was natural that some fans would gravitate more to one side than the other, but Peach is still the main heroine of the franchise. She appears in most if not all mainline Mario games in some capacity, either as the damsel or a playable character, and now has two games to call her own

Aside from Mario and Peach, who else has gotten to be playable alongside Mario? Obviously Luigi as the original player 2, three colors of Toad across Mario 2, New Super Mario Bros Wii and U, Captain Toad in the 3D World minigames, Yoshi and Wario in 64 DS, Toadette and Nabbit in U Deluxe, Rosalina in 3D World, and most recently Bowser Jr. in Bowser's Fury

That's 13 playable characters (9 if you count all of the Toads together and don't count Captain Toad since he's in a minigame), with Daisy notably absent despite being a fan favorite. Toadette being playable was especially egregious because they gave her a power-up that effectively just turned her into Peach with a different outfit. Rosalina was also "just another Princess" same as Daisy, but introduced much more recently, so it felt like they were acknowledging they could bring in any character they wanted, but who would want boring old Daisy when there's a shiny new Princess right here? Not knocking on Rosalina, I love her too, but I've wanted to see more Daisy content since I was a child

Do you remember how excited people were about Pauline showing up in Odyssey? Sure she'd shown up in the Mario vs. Donkey Kong games, but again, those were spinoffs that most people didn't play. This was direct acknowledgment of her character in the main story, and now she's showing up in the Sports titles! Further awareness of the character means more opportunities for something new!

Even if Wonder just took place in Sarasaland and Daisy was a background character, that would have been shocking because it would have been her first time back in 34 years! But no! They skipped straight to her being playable!! This means that she has a much greater chance of coming back to be playable in future mainline games or even spinoffs like the new Peach game or the more story-driven RPGs

Even better, though? This sets a precedent. Who knows who could be playable next?? We could see Pauline be playable for the first time in a mainline game! We could see Wario come back as a Wario Land crossover! We could even see Waluigi actually be acknowledged by the canon for once!!!

Daisy is beloved because of her personality and was wanted as a playable character because of her absence. Her inclusion is a huge deal because it means that Nintendo has actually been listening to us and knows how to give us what we want. It shows growth on Nintendo's part, and serves as a sign that they will continue to give us more of it going forward
