Since yall seem to like my other AUs/headcanons, I've decided to rant a bit about my 'main' one :3 (kept vague to avoid spoilers)

Small summary: (more indepth rant below)

it's a villan & hero hermitcraft / life series / empires au, focused on bad boys (at least during the first arc). Joel creates a bar as a cover for a fighting ring/information selling business, joined by pearl effo gem grian and jimmy. Grian refuses to participate in the criminal activities at first, but doesn't rat them out either. (inspired by his resisting the resistance thing in s9)

However, as u can probably guess, this doesn't last long and he slowly gets more n more involved, especially once random people mysteriously start getting "the red curse", which he recognizes from his past... (hehe watcher lore) Grian continues to pretend to stay uninvolved while trying to keep the Watchers at bay behind the scenes, even going as far as creating multiple alter egos / secret identities in order to hide his involvement.... (poultry man, cute guy, mother spore,...) Sadly, the Watchers think identity reveals are incredibly amusing and make it their mission to reveal Grians secrets... :)

Im not a very experienced writer, so I can't guarantee the fics would be any good- while i def prefer comics, it would take a long ass time and I'm not sure whether its a good idea since i tend to loose interest in projects p fast wkdhakdj

Still debating what to name it, I think ill call it "Web of lies", "Wolau" for short LMFAO. Im not very good at naming things 😭 suggestions are welcome!!!

Some more background info:

Joel is a fairly new villain who has decided to start a business focused on fighting rings, selling information and just generally doing criminal stuff. (inspired by his secret fighting club in s10). He hires Gem and jimmy, two ex-vigilantes who became a bit more... Villainous. Their cover is a normal bar, which ofc means they also need normal employees who won't snitch. Jimmy suggests Grian toJoel, since he's a retired informant. He basically started out as an investigative journalist in another city, but got more n more involved with both villains and heroes (which is how he knows jimmy) before joining a cult (watcher lore watcher lore watcher lore-) and suddenly dissappearing.

Although he went missing a few years ago, they manage to track him down. He joins, but tells them he's not involved in the world of villains anymore and that he wants to stay out of everything (so hes basically working in the bar that they use as a cover as a 'normal' employee and turns a blind eye to anything criminal going on)

That's kind of the start of the story? Afterwards, Pearl, a villain who used to be a vigilante that worked with Scott (<-number one hero), then got betrayed by him and is now plotting his murder, joins in. Later on etho joins, who is originally sent by the hermits as a spy (<- p big villain&vigilante alliance in the city) but ends up deciding to side w/ them. (BOAT BOYS BOAT BOYS BOAT BOYS-)

(pearl & Scott's conflict is ofc a double life ref and etho is a mycelium resistance ref, he also ends up finding out about some of grians secrets and helping him behind the scenes)

Although its focused on the members of the bar, later on it focuses more on other hermits (since they get more involved w/ the villain group "hermits" which most of the hermits are a part of) but there's also some side stories that focus on other ppl (there's a whole side story about Ren and Doc getting to know each other after Ren gets infected by the curse, or martyn whole listener thing & how it's connected to renchanting/ren getting cursed and the Watchers showing up in the first place... But i dont wanna spoil too much :3)

Oh also! Hermits r mainly criminals(vigilantes, villains, big salmom mafia,...) and Empires members r usually heroes! But there is some exceptions to this rule. (jimmy n martyn for example)

What is the Turtle's living situation like??? Is it still in the sewers? Do Casey and April visit them there? How different is their home in the AU compared to the modern depictions? I cant imagine sewers in the 20's were to much different than sewers now, but im still very curious :]

AS FOR THE SEWER QUESTION IM GLAD YOU ASKEDDD I made the entire turtle lair in the sims bc of this ask SO here we are,

The entrance to the sewers is pretty basic, shoot off to 6 open rooms,

Splinters room!! He's a pretty solitary guy so he has a place for meditation and a cozy lil chair he falls asleep in constantly.

Here's the rec room/kitchen, Lotta areas for food making and eating, and a piano Mikey plays every now and again for everyone! They also have a dinky little TV set donnie managed to snag. (Infront the couch)

The dojo!! Pretty basic, this is where the boys do their training!

The bathroom/storage! Very rustic and stolen and or built by Donatello. Lotta extra stuff splinter brought over from japan and misc living stuff for the family.

Now for the boys rooms!!!

Leo and Donatello share a room, leo keeps model trains and tons of books donnie can't house on his side, he's also got several Japanese tapestries to keep in touch with his heritage. He also has alot of art deco posters, he enjoys the colors and movement of them. He also keeps track of scout badges he's collected, because while be can't BE a boyscout, he loves the idea of scouting and following that code of values.

Donnies side is much more technical. He tinkers and builds things while listening to the radio, he'll turn it on for both him and Leo while they do respective activities. He also has Japanese tapestries, mostly because when the boys were small splinter got them each their own, and he never took it down. He's got tons of books and maps, and more physics leaning posters.

On the other side of the sewer, Raphel and Mikey share a room, in the middle they have a Foosball table they both enjoy from time to time, but on raphs side, he's got a punching bag (go figure) and a stereo radio phonograph, along with a chest of his things, his favorite stuffed toy, some art deco posters and a painting Mikey made him, along with a portrait of Casey, and a cow skull. He's taken the tapestry splinter gave him down. Says it clashes with the rest.

And last but not least! Mikey has the brightest part of the sewer, he enjoys plants, and taking care of them, he says they add life to the home. Along with several paintings he's done and art deco posters he enjoys! He's got a desk for Journaling and an easel for his portraits. He's also got his Japanese tapestry hung, it gives him inspiration.

All and all, not too different from their modern counterparts! I tried to make my little diorama art project as time period accurate as I could, for the sims yknow, but I think I did a pretty good job expressing my vision (although there was a sewer grate I COULD NOT find for the life of me so I just pretended don't look at it too hard)

April and casey visit on occasion, after all the portrait of Casey was painted by mikey!! Raph just felt... sentimental about keeping it. April visits less, due to grime, but she cares about her friends and can look past it after a good shower.

AND DONT YOU WORRY- I'll make a shredder tattoo masterpost, he's not covered head to toe, but he's pretty well inked up..

SO. setting i imagine is similar to typical vat7k BUT a little darker and more dystopian. think steampunk industrial stuff... which i know hugo's kingdom is already like lol but just imagine it like. in a lot more places. this is basically a "steampunk" au too

robots are VERY common. invented by a group of scientists with the main ones being donella and ulla

robots are used as service etc etc. theyre not sentient at all so this isnt like. some unethical practice

but ulla and donella are OBSESSED with making them more and more advanced, theyre besties and all that. but ulla is Particularly obsessed with making the Perfect Robot

we know that ulla is kind of messed up in the head. in this au she kind of messes way too much with robot sentience WHILE ALSO getting obsessed with the eternal library. same stuff happens eventually. donella and ulla fight about the eternal library etc etc

BUT ALSO... ulla is working on her Magnum Opus. a son for her and her husband, who she is making to be the perfect robot. quirin is unaware of the shit shes doing and fully trusts her and supports this passion project

and well! she does make the first Sentient Robot. with the use of science and Magical Knowledge she was able to basically give life force through magical means into the robot. The robot of course she named varian. and not only is he sentient, but he looks completely human

she did some messed up stuff tho! again! she's programmed him with fake memories so he thinks he has lived a life fully as a human. he's also programmed to not notice things like the small seams on his body and all that. like his code just immediately disregards all that

anywaysss. after ulla disappears, quirin is dedicated to taking care of varian. he figures it's best to follow with ulla's choice of making sure varian doesnt know hes a robot

MEANWHILE ! because of the schism between ulla and donella, there was some wack shit that happened. namely robots going completely crazy. now all robots are Murder Robots. so the world is pretty Dystopian at the moment

Varian decides he wants to go out and find the source of what made the robots go crazy. bc this sucks lol. like everyone is Just Miserable

so he meets his friends. nuru, yong, hugo!

LETS TALK ABOUT HUGO

hugo works for donella. hugo also absolutely HATES robots. the robots have been messing shit up since he was a kiddo

he's kind of like a robot hunter. harvesting them for parts as well as getting rid of them bc theyre dangerous. usually donella directs him to different missions. and now shes telling him to join this guy (varian) bc she wants the secrets that ulla had hidden and varian is sure as hell after them

sooooo at one point. varian gets hurt maybe, or interacts with something that breaks the code in him or whatever. the code that stops him from noticing his robotic qualities. i think he probably would get super injured and like. he and all his friends stare in shock and horror as some sort of gash or sparks or whatever show a metallic inside

they all find out he's a robot together weeeee. no one is having a good time

so he's living with existential crisis. he's away from his dad so he cant travel all the way back to be like hey What The Fuck. AND he's still dedicated to his goal. but now he's just. confused, scared, and unsure if he's worthy of his humanity that he thought he had

they all try to work with this new discovery (which i think would happen earlier on rather than way later). hugo especially is like. having a crisis. bc he's always hated robots and for good reason. but varian... varian is SO human. he thinks, he feels, he cares, etc. he's more Human than a lot of the Flesh and Blood people he's been around

so you know, hugo starts to fall in love with him anyway. lots of excellent scenes of him helping varian with his mechanics, etc

and of course varian starts falling in love with him too, but is dealing with a lot of confusion as well. like is he even real, doesnt hugo deserve to be loved by a Human and not a Robot, etc etc

after i noticed the enchanted demo release i did a whole ass lap around the house and when i tell you im so close to biting my table every time the scenes change... THE ATMOSPHERE?? THE ART??? THE ENTIRE THINGYS?!?! i wanna bundle this all up and like,. absorb it, eat it even. I played through it straight, no pause no nothin'. im REPLAYING IT even and trying not to run laps around the rooms here. my brain chemistry has been altered. i saw the divine. i am not the same person i was like 2 hours ago. the love, the skill, the gui, the art, the writing the all of it, it's amazing, divine even. like, i want this painted on my ceiling. like im not joking i want this entire game painted on my ceiling.. i remember playing the very first demo and being FLOORED bc hello??? banger plot banger characters whats not to love (the #gayforkayn from like 2 years ago has a whole section in my heart LMAO). and now the enchanted demo is release, and im still so in love no even more in love with the game. seeing the work being done on alaris has been the one of the highlights throughout the time ive been around, and im so happy for you! so a big congrats to this milestone and all the work that has been done to get here! im writing this in a like half awake moment so dunno how much makes sense and also im sorry if this got long i swear it wasnt like this when i started. i be remembering and writing but the enchanted demo gives me the best shakes someone could get. but seriously, i can feel the love that went into this. my heart and soul are happy, and once again a massive congrats to this milestone and every bit of work done to reach it. the entire demo has so much love poured into it and every little piece of the game just makes me get those good shakes in my heart (if that makes sense). (I also did not mean for this to get a little bit long but, im just so proud and happy for you)

revamping everything has honestly been a crazy and Extremely Tiring experience. i never would’ve imagined two years ago i would’ve been able to replace everything i have. the different vfx (snowblossom my beloved), text effects, assets, and just everything took up so much time to replace. a lot of times i wondered if it was even worth it since the changes felt small. but i rly do feel like seeing the end product now, it feels so different from the og and in a way the demo is a reminder of how far i’ve come on my dev journey compared to the og release 😭

so thankful as always for the ppl (new and old) who have watched over alaris’s development. it means a lot to know the ppl who have played the new demo can see how much work has been put into it and like it 💖 i sometimes get self conscious comparing alaris to intertwine since a lot of new ppl came here bc of intertwine. but its def moments like this that remind me how special alaris is to me just by virtue of it being my OG project. like this is literally my child

i have a couple ideas about this!!! its more in the direction of fluctuating sexual desire though if that's okay? more so than gender just because im not sure i can properly verbalise that part of this eddie, not the way it would deserve <3

but i rly love this ask bc while im very into many iterations of eddie - dom, sub, top, bottom, virgin whatever - i also really love eddie who just kind of doesn't care about that stuff. like, he has so many other things hes doing and focusing on, which means those aspects of like, life or those relationships, whatever, that seem so important in highschool, he just doesn't really care about. or doesn’t most of the time. so maybe late bloomer but ace flux is a really nice term too.

because to me that doesn't mean he doesn't want to be close to people, he does, and that’s where the angst comes in. because he doesn't always know how, how to do it the way he wants, in a way that feels right. he knows what happens in films when guys and girls get close. and he knows he shouldn’t want to get close to guys romantically but sometimes he scares himself because he thinks he does. think he wants that, wants to hold a guys hand.

he doesn't fantasise about sex in class, he doesn't imagine anyone naked, doesn’t really join in when his friends talk about crushes, stating something about conformity and ‘no one for him in a small town like this’, if anyone asks him.

but secretly, he just wants to feel close. feel loved. he doesn’t get crushes but he knows he wants that.

mostly he just thinks about his music, his friends, his campaigns and he’s content with that. he focuses on that.

but there have been people, to draw him out. a girl in elementary school, who was so smart and funny and he loved being her friend. but then in the corner of the playground she kissed him one day, suddenly, to eddie. and he could taste the juice she had a lunch but he hates grape so he wiped his mouth and made a face. she got mad, and didn’t talk to him again.

and the boy who lived at the trailer park one summer, visiting his grandma. they saw each other basically every day, listened to tapes and exploring the woods. eddie’s hair was just starting to really grow out and he’d been living with wayne for a while. the boy said he likes it, his hair, reminded him of a girl. and eddie liked the boy too, liked that he said that, even though it scared him. but then he moved too quick, tongue and teeth and a spitty hand on them both. and then he left, didn’t come see eddie the couple days before he was gone. and eddie was reeling, he didn’t know what he liked, what he didn’t. he was confused, felt wrong.

maybe there was one guy, once he got older, when he knew that he should want to do all this stuff, should feel the need to get off and want to get off with people. some comment making him self conscious, about him not caring about it, thinking it wasn’t normal, he should want it. so he followed this guy into the hideout bathroom. but the moment they were close he didn’t want it anymore, didn’t feel right. but the guy didn’t listen, happy not to touch eddie too much but got off still with eddie there, when he’d rather be anywhere else.

just eddie having a sort of trauma, over the years, from how people have touched him, have talked to him. have seemed to want him around but then gone cold and distant. hadn’t asked what he wanted and just took, just used, just needed and wanted and didn’t give him a chance to think, to breath.

and then the bats nearly eat him alive.

but he survives, some how. stuck in hospital, wayne by his side when he can. steve by his side even more, just because, he’s not sure why. but it’s nice. steve’s nice. steve lets eddie think and breath before he talks, before he moves, lets eddie take his time.

and then maybe he does want to kiss steve, sometimes when they touch something stirrs in his belly, his fingertips tingle. but, its not all the time, not always.

and on the occasion he does feel like sticking his hand into his boxers, the rare times that feels right. it’s almost easy to think about steve’s hand and steve’s lips and steve’s kind words.

and then they do kiss. one night, on steve couch. and eddie feels something light up in him, something new and special. a warm ember.

but the second time they kiss its not like that, he loves the closeness, but, he doest want to do anything more. he just wants to hug. but will that be enough for steve? can eddie be enough?

what do you mean by ""reylo dynamic""??

okay. first thing to understand is when i say "reylo dynamic" in a ship or pairing or style of writing romance it isnt unique to reylo. a lot of popular fandoms have some variation of "the reylo dynamic" its just reylo has popularized and kind of mass marketed what used to be a niche fandom ship dynamic so its what i call it as shorthand

The Reylo Dynamic™ usually has specific traits (note: it does not need to have all of these, just a significant amount). canon characterization does not matter either, all it comes down to is the fandom portrayal of the ship by and large (think dramoine and kacchako). the only hardline one is this:

>spunky female character (usually protag of the story) who is at least a little combative with the male lead, and a male lead who is otherwise grumpy/brooding/mysterious

for the common traits:

>female lead is usually brown haired, shorter, with emphasis on being petite and small. idk why even reylo stories they do this even tho daisy ridley isnt that short???

>male lead is usually dark haired and typically described as "unconventionally attractive" exactly

>female lead usually has to prove herself or feels like she has to prove herself. like. as a big thing. it can be one big moment or her constantly feeling like shes being condescended to for some perceived weakness (like: being a woman, being small, not knowing how to control magic powers, whatever). important thing to note is she will often not get over this until like the very end of the story if ever

>usually bc this dynamic can be hard to accommodate for and write around (bc the two romantic leads DONT WANT TO BE AROUND EACH OTHER) there is usually some kind of plot contrivance keeping them together. fated lovers, soul mates, class project, you name it. i feel this is usually a cop out bc i spend most of the plots feeling like they should just fuck and get it over with

>there is almost always miscommunication. and the annoying kind. every time i have tried to suffer thru a story with The Reylo Dynamic™ in novel format i find myself annoyed. bc i dont believe most of the time this is a real, normal, very human break down of communication. i constantly feel like one of them is being an unreasonable or frankly stupid brat in the situation purely for the sake of plot convenience. do you know how dumb it is to see a woman who has lost her job, her only friend, her boyfriend, and her mom get told by some hot guy "hey due to circumstances outside of ur control that i dont blame u for we have to get married also im rich and will take care of ur every need and im not asking for romance i just need magic powers back of mine that u technically have and if u dont marry me they'll also go out of control and kill you" and the woman. is mad and pissy abt it and deliberately makes problems for him. bitch u were at rock bottom and this guy is offering u free rent and food and answers to all the questions you had since chapter 1. and ur mad abt it. theres no moral objections she has to him she's just annoyed bc????????????? i guess she is being asked to do something????????? bc she doesnt wanna look weak?????????? bc shes cranky??????????????? i dont know. id cut her some slack to start with but she just keeps deliberately antagonizing him until they fuck. i gave up reading it was a slog

>lots of bickering and jabs at the other. depending on the rating of the story this will only be resolved with hatefucking. even then it usually wont fully be resolved. while i am a fan of hatefucking there is smth abt how much of a slog it is to watch it in the reylo dynamic bc of the next point:

>usually the author never commits to them having a real, genuine, non-imagined reason to being combative with each other or hating each other, NOR having a real, genuine, non-imagined reason to be together and make it work and be happy. they live in this limbo between dislike. a constant "will they wont they" but instead of the will they or wont they in question being hooking up its instead if they will break up or not. it's like watching a very incompatible couple refuse to work things out by talking and sorting through their own issues AND refusing to just break up and see other ppl more compatible. id rather there be genuine dislike or even hatred they have to sort thru and actually make progress in. dont half ass making a guy horrible. give me a reason why the mc hates him. or if it is imagined by the mc, show the mc processing it properly and working thru it and having proper character growth. but they dont bc the bickering is part of the appeal and making one or both of them genuinely bad ppl breaks the fantasy. or smth.

do you have any advice for artists struggling to get into the splatoon zine scene? I've applied to dozens but always get beat out by the same artists who get into every zine and just have better art and portfolios, and it's extremely discouraging as a small artist without that portfolio and experience going up against them.

i rly think im the worst person to ask this bc im only toe-dipping in the splatoon fandom (i also barely drew anything splatoon-related so far) and ive hosted more zines than i applied for. ive only applied for one zine in the past year and got rejected despite my best efforts.

something ppl need to understand is that every single mod team has preferences (whether it's fair or not is up to everyone, that's just how it is). i definitely understand how stressful it is to be unsure of what the mods are looking for, but sadly everyone is entitled to handle their project however they wish. its also impossible for mods to remember every single person who already got accepted somewhere and it would truly be unfair to block out 100% of artists who already got experience, BUT imho every mod team should be welcoming of unexperienced applicants bc they absolutely deserve a spot too.

now what rly irks me personally is that some mods will be very open about their preferences, but others might come off as dishonest bc they claim they're not looking for one specific style or specifically big/small account and yet the final product is full of the same type of works. and dont get me started about the whole clique mentality that makes some mods prioritize their friends and moots over other applicants.

but it's also important to stay humble and know your level as an artist. it sucks but some people are really too early in their journey to make works that zines would want to accept regardless of the scale. practice and patience is the only fix to this, art is a skill and some ppl are gonna be more advanced than you no matter your level. i just wanna point out that you being rejected does not automatically mean your art is lesser in any way.

Thank you!! I'm glad someone asked because I am always in the mood to infodump about my ocs. Fair warning, this may get long as I have a tendency to ramble when I'm passionate about something-

You were correct about their names. Namiko and Tamsin are both what I call "cave elves" which are essentially elves who have adapted over time to life in a dark environment, hence why they look like toothpaste incarnates. I intend to actually flesh out the species more later on as it's a little hard to explain when I don't know myself what the species consists of.

Namiko (she/her) is my main oc (hence the pfp) and I initially created her because my teacher assigned a character design projects for my art foundations class in 2022. This was my first drawing of her, actually:

Namiko doesn't have as much substance as other characters of mine but I do enjoy drawing her often because I imagine she has a very snarky personality and is a bit of a prank-fanatic. She's also the closest I have to a persona since I draw her so frequently, so she shares a couple traits of mine (and is most often featured in the obscure meme art I draw.) Small Namiko art dump:

Tamsin (she/xir) is more fleshed out than Namiko is. I created her on a whim because a friend of mine asked me what Namiko was and I found myself so tongue-tied that I decided to draw another character of her species in an attempt to find an answer. I made her 7 months after Namiko and she started out a little rough, and I removed eye number 7 later on.

Tamsin is basically a mom friend. Very considerate and often worries about her friends, albeit being a little basic (she would definitely frequent Starbucks, just look at her). She's got a lot of siblings so I envision xir to unintentionally baby her friends around or take time to explain things thoroughly like she would to a child. She definitely also advocates for being yourself, I can imagine her being reminiscent of a kind old woman who doesn't quite understand peoples' struggles but supports them nonetheless.

As for Namiko and Tamsin's relationship, I'd say they're probably more of the childhood friend type, kind of like a sisterly relationship. They tolerate one another, but they aren't super enthused to hang out as much since they grew apart as they got older. When they do hang out, most of their interactions include Tamsin being extremely anxious and reluctant because Namiko is about to do something stupid without any thought about the consequences. You didn't ask, but these fools also have two more friends that make up their friend group, Harlow and Vesper.

Harlow (they/them) is often viewed by others as childish due to their whopping height of 4'9", but they are actually decently mature and well-mannered. They adore reptiles, and have a still-unnamed pet snake who means the world to them (despite the fact that Tamsin, their best friend, is a little hesitant to befriend their pet). I have been working on a little project regarding Harlow and a friend of theirs, but I shan't spoil it for now so here's a tiny Harlow-sized dump:

Vesper (she/they) is probably the least-drawn and also the least fleshed out of the group, even compared to Namiko. Speaking of Namiko, the two are best friends and share a love for getting on peoples' nerves. Vesper doesn't have much of a filter, though. Namiko is the type to TP your house for the funnies, Vesper is the type to place a thumbtack on your seat for the funnies.

Some dynamics and side details about the group are all written out in a discord channel so I'll copy paste them:

Vesper and Tamsin are the type to get in arguments. Not very intense arguments, just Tamsin pulling the "Hey, stop that" card whenever Vesper tries something stupid, which is a lot. Tamsin has a few younger siblings, so she has a bit of the mom-friend personality. She's a very sarcastic type when it comes to Vesper.

Vesper and Harlow are basically that "he asked for no pickles" meme. She sees Harlow as a bit of the baby of the group, which causes them a little frustration, but I feel they'd be pretty open to each other. I could see them ranting to one another.

I always imagined Vesper would have a very honest way of speaking. She'd blurt something out and be brutally honest, which doesn't always work to her favor. Also, she definitely put way too much effort into learning how to solve Rubix cubes. I can imagine her being a speed cuber in her free time, but she keeps it to herself mostly. Tamsin would act like the teacher that makes kids say bye to inanimate objects and it pisses everyone off.

Tamsin tries to make baked goods like a kind grandma but none of xir friends have the heart to tell xir that they taste like dirt. Tamsin is also constantly on the verge of rage and hates taking care of kids but puts on a front because little kids love xir for some reason.

That's all, and I'm so so sorry that this post is a behemoth. I went on a tangent and honestly I don't think I even described the characters well, but I'm super honored that you like my art and here's a little doodle to end this ask!

Hi! I want to finally try my hand at knitting and was wondering if you had any recs in terms of tools, material, beginner patterns to try etc. I really like some of the knit work you do so thanks for unknowingly being a push towards this interest!

(this will be a read more bc I started ranting sorry 😭😭 i can’t be changed)

anyway, a lot of what i’d recommend looking back at when i started compared to now and what i wish i’d done differently, is definitely, before you start buying anything, look at a bunch and bunch of knitted items, pintrest is great for this, but also check out individual creators on instagram, they make for great inspiration and are a great source for finding patterns if you’re willing to pay (which unfortunately… i would also recommend, but I’ll get onto that), and figure out what you’re favourite style of knitting is. what kind of items do you want to make?? what kind look do you like, chunky knits, fine knits, interesting stitches, lace designs, cables etc?? what kind of yarns do you like the look and feel of, soft cottons or fuzzy alpaca or warm wool??? gauging these things will really help inform what you invest money on early bc it’s what you’ll be doing most before you invest on branching out. for example, I went with very normal staples bc i gravitate towards things that are very classic, not too fine knit or chunky, and usually medium weight wool, so my first purchases were three different lengths of circular 5mm needles, some worsted superwash wool yarn, and some stitch markers.

so getting into that, it’s pretty simple. you prefer fine looking knits?? buy smaller needles. you prefer chunky knits?? buy bigger needles. it might look like chunky knits are easier than fine knits, but I find that difficulty depends on the stitches and pattern, not the yarn. thinner yarn just means garments take longer to make, but it’s worth it if you prefer the look. but if you do find it hard to work on small things and think manipulating smaller loops and needles would be difficult, I’d say the best standard to start with would be 4mm or 5mm, that’s what I use to make most of my stuff. and above all, buy circular needles. whether you like working flat pieces and sewing them together or working into the round seemlessly is something you have to figure out as you go, but you can do both with circular needles while you can’t work in the round with straight needles, plus circular needles hold more stitches for bigger projects, the only downside is you have to buy needles with various length cords attaching them to use on different circumferences ie the body vs the sleeves.

as for yarn, again it’s preference for feel and style. if you want to make warm winter jumpers, get wool, and if you like making light summer tops, get cotton. there’s lots of other choices out there, i just think these are the two staples. you can also hold wool with a strand of alpaca but I wouldn’t suggest that for a first project. of course, there is also acrylic, but I prefer to use this in crochet and for things that aren’t garments, mostly bc it doesn’t have a lot of drape and is kind of rigid for clothes, and I also don’t like the feel, but of course it’s cheaper, so depending on how much you’re willing to spend, there are some good quality acrylics out there. but there’s also some good cheap wools, look for drops yarn, they have great size and colour range.

and for other bits to have, i’d suggest some circular stitch markers (if you’re working in the round), a pair of scissors, and a darning needle for sewing in ends.

as for patterns, i would really suggest using patterns you have to buy. it seems silly when there’s some free patterns, but I find they’re generally better written and come with a lot of good instruction for first timers, especially videos showing steps (petitknit and darlingjadore are very good in this respect). and bought patterns are very versatile once you get used to knitting. one of my favourite things to do and the best way to branch out in knitting is to adapt patterns you’ve already used, for example adding colour changes or intarsia patterns or changing the sleeve length or the ribbing style, there’s endless things you can do to make the same pattern into different garments entirely, so it’s a worthwhile investment.

and for what to make, again it entirely depends on what you gravitate towards. im a true believer that there is no definitive beginner project, bc knitting is very much about learning as you go, so what you want to start with is more about how much you wanna learn in one go, do you want to take it one step at a time or throw yourself in. my first project was a jumper, a raglan style knit seemlessly in the round with some extra bits thrown on top like a folded collar and German short rows for shaping, which sounds like a lot, but throwing myself at the deep end meant i familiarised myself with a lot very fast, which set me on a good path. yes, i did make mistakes, and ended up undoing the entire thing later to reuse the wool to make something else I’d wear more, but again that’s the beauty of knitting, you’re never wasting anything by trying bc you can just undo it all and start from scratch again. but saying that, real beginner projects are usually scarfs bc it’s just a rectangle and you don’t need to know any fancy techniques, just cast on, knit a bunch in stockinette, cast off, boom scarf. but i also think a vest or even a jumper is a good beginner pattern, depending on its design. vests are good bc it uses less yarn so it’s a smaller investment, plus you don’t have to content with sleeves and bc of that they’re worked up quicker. you will have to probably learn some stitches for shaping like german short rows and m1l and m1r increases, but again there’s a bunch of videos out there and it’s better to learn it and have it in your tool belt then. I also think raglan jumpers are a great starting point, especially that start with a seamless collar bc you don’t have any parts that require picking up stitches, it’s all seamless and at the end of it you get a great garment. that’s another thing i’ll say, don’t just do a project bc it’s for beginners if you don’t actually like it. it’s much better to try and make something you actually like instead of something easy that you’ll never wear or use. of the things I’ve made, petitknit is always my go to, and both the novice slip-over and the stockholm slip-over v-neck are great vests depending on whether you prefer a round or v-neck. my beginner jumper pattern was the weekend sweater by darlingjadore, but also check out easyasknit who have a whole slew of patterns designed to be easy, simple basics.

1. why do you not bother for a concrete personal pronouns and an alias? - two things; i've both grown to be unbothered by people mischaracterizing me and me not spending a lot of time to invest into either! i have some semblance of my own identity in mind, but its used only for humor's sake as comparison to other peoples' perception of me HAH

2. what's with the old aliases? why mention them at all? - i've grown attached! i cant get over any of my old aliases that i gave just the tiniest portion of purpose, even for a little bit. plus, its something for people to fall back on if they wanna get back to talking to me like normal instead of referring to me like. idk, thistle or smth as a joke (please do this btw, itd honestly make my day)

zooming session! — molang lamp

so i really like talking ab myself and stuff im interested in so i wanna use this blog to do just that hehe

this will be the inaugural “zooming session” and by zooming im referring to when you enlarge something and you get to see the details or the stuff you zoom into! so this zooming session is just me talking ab all the small details in my writing bc i. just want to.

so it took me like 10 minutes to write this bc this was, like almost all the other pieces i posted, an assignment! i was supposed to make a monologue by a mystery character. we were free to choose who or what our mystery character would be and i decided im using an inanimate object bc its just fun that way

but whats not fun was the fact that i fucking forgot my creative writing class was on tuesday not wednesday so 10 minutes before class i was sitting in front of my laptop w an empty google docs page just taunting me through my mf screen!!! the class started and i was like oh naw i gotta think fast so i looked around my desk like whos gonna be my star whos gonnq be my star AND MY EYES LANDED ON…

and the words just started flowing!!

so what does the story even mean..

ok id like for everyone to keep in mind that i (emphasis) kept HUENINGKAI in mind (insert random pic of him)

the overall “plot” is that the molang lamp watches me sit on my desk while im in class or doing homework or whatever whatever. and molangs just an observer right but you can see that its capable of feeling or understanding something at an emotional level. idk wtf im saying btw but molangs main thing is that it knows that i dont like it for what/who it is—the reason why i “like” this molang lamp is not bc i like molang but bc i like hueningkai and hueningkai loves molang. can we just dive into the details and i jisy tell you what they mean ok lets go

so what i have is a molang lamp. but i dont treat it like a lamp. especially since jts meant to be a night light(?) and i hate night lights lol im that guy who prefers sleeping in total darkness. anyways thats what i meant by “do you find comfort in the absence of my virtue” bc the molang is supposed to light up but i prefer just keeping it in off mode all the time

thats also why i only ever stare at my molang lamp (bc i never turn it on) hence glances and stares blablabla
